We think this print game is tough

FEATURES Peter Foulkes

Not the easiest of professions, print is rewarding in so many ways, often in helping others. Having talked a lot to frontline printers recently I know we have all been doing our bit for those that have it a lot harder than us here at home. Not easy to charge the going rate for charitable work for people set on making a difference. Well done to all of you that choose not to make out of others misfortune. Good times are coming your way, print volumes are rising, get ready to ride that summer wave! Peter ‘beach-ready’ Foulkes

TYPECRAFT INCREASES SPEED WITH AGFA ANAPURNA i-Sub Digital, a specialist supplier of wide format digital printing systems and consumables, has successfully installed an Agfa Anapurna H2500i LED at Cheltenham based Typecraft. The new machine has replaced a previous Agfa model which Typecraft inherited following its takeover of fellow Cheltenham business Mark Latchford Screenprint back in 2017. The company made the decision to upgrade after recognising that the new technology in the Agfa Anapurna H2500i LED would allow it to offer a wider range of applications to its customers. Sales and Production Director Matt Magovern explains: “We also knew we wanted to increase our speed and productivity and the new LED version has allowed us to do that.” Beyond its speed — Typecraft’s new machine is able to print at speeds of up to 115sqm/hr in ‘Draft Mode’ — the hybrid UV LED-curable inkjet printer boasts a printing width of 2.5m and can produce both indoor and outdoor applications. Its six colour plus white ink set combines high quality with high productivity for rigid and flexible wide format jobs and its white ink function also creates possibilities for printing on transparent material for backlit applications or for printing white as a spot colour. Typecraft made the decision to invest after taking a trip to Agfa’s HQ in Belgium to see the technology in action. “It was extremely beneficial and interesting to see the substance behind the Agfa brand. The Agfa HQ is a large operation and as a customer it is important to know and understand what the manufacturer is about. To see the scale and detail of the company first hand during the visit was invaluable,” says Matt.

Typecraft’s Matt Magovern alongside new Agfa Anapurna H2500i LED from i-Sub.

“We were shown all of their different systems in the range as well as their inks and the processes behind them. There was plenty of printing taking place, so we got a chance to examine the sort of work the H2500i LED could produce.” The machine itself was installed just before Christmas 2021 and has been up and running ever since. Matt says that he is delighted with how things are going. “Day to day we use it to print onto Foamex, vinyl, paper, acrylic and various other different materials. It was key for us to make the move to the LED machine; we don’t have to wait for the lamps to warm up as LED lamps are ready instantly. The speed really is the key difference for us; the quality is undoubtedly superior to what we were working with before, but the speed alone is gaining us two hours of production time per day.” www.i-subdigital.com

MIMAKI FEATURE AT THE CMYUK CIRL INITIATIVE A number of products digitally printed using Mimaki printing technology have been featured at the CMYUK Creatives in Residence Live (CIRL) showcase that took place in Shrewsbury recently. The event marked the end of this unique industry initiative that gave four graduates a six month placement at CMYUK. Three surface designers – Keely Russell, Evie Venables and Sarah Willcocks had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of digital textiles, using the finest digital production technology in the world and exposed to the most advanced digitally prepared textiles. Their experiences were documented by graduate videographer Taylor Doggett. Sponsored by Mimaki, EFI, Kongsberg, Klieverik, Epson and Canon, the programme included a number of design luminaries and technical experts who mentored the CMYUK graduates. “As a sponsor of the CIRL project, we were delighted to support the graduates with both access to Mimaki hardware and expert insight from the team at Hybrid,” said Duncan Jefferies, Head of Marketing & Business Development at Mimaki’s exclusive distributor, Hybrid Services Ltd. Throughout the initiative Hybrid welcomed the graduates to its headquarters in Crewe, Cheshire, to experience a wide range of Mimaki’s latest textile, UV, 3D and solvent technology. It was able to help inspire the designers with new ways of bringing their creative ideas to life and present them on a broad range of products and substrates. A great example of how well this worked was the metal bottles that were 360 degree printed with designs originally conceived for printing furnishings fabrics, adding a new dimension to their collections and providing insights as to how a product line can be extended with wide ranging applications and uses. Hybrid’s showroom manager, Richard Williams and applications specialist, Ashley Carr were directly involved, working with the designers at both Shrewsbury and Crewe, mentoring, inspiring and helping bring their creativity to life. “Echoing our initial thoughts when we were involved at the launch of the project: Creatives in Residence Live has been a fantastic opportunity for three talented surface designers to gain a foothold in the print industry, and it was important for us, as Mimaki’s distributor for the UK and Ireland to be involved. Through our support of this unique initiative, we’ve relished helping CMYUK mentor and develop some great creative talent, whilst providing the designers with unique access to Mimaki’s latest print technology. Young people are the print industry’s future and the importance in helping them flourish is not lost on us. We’ve been blown away with their creativity and enthusiasm,” said Duncan. Mimaki hardware is widely specified at colleges and universities across the UK and Ireland – it affords students the opportunity to work with ‘industry standard’ technology, easing the journey from education to the workplace.

Hybrid has also previously supported initiatives at local colleges where design students have been given access to Mimaki technology, providing them with a unique understanding of how print can be a powerful tool for designers. Commenting on the CIRL final showcase Duncan said, “We’ve been very impressed by the enthusiasm of the CIRL graduates and their readiness to explore new printing techniques, expand their designs onto different substrates and quite simply absorb all the many opportunities they’ve been presented with. This unique initiative from CMYUK has provided four graduates with an incredible opportunity, which we’ve been proud to be a part of. “We’d encourage them to continue to embrace the opportunities that digital printing and cutting provides! We’ve seen them bring some beautiful creative work to life in so many different ways, and it’s been a fantastic showcase for Mimaki technology. I’d like to think we’ve got some great advocates for not just what can be achieved on Mimaki systems, but by using digital printing and cutting in general, and for this message to be taken into industry would be a fitting ‘next step’ for their journey too.” www.hybridservices.co.uk

KELLMATT MOVES UP TO MORGANA DIGIFOLD PRO XL Borehamwood based digital print company Kellmatt Limited has upgraded its Morgana DigiFold Pro to the latest DigiFold Pro XL. Matt Weir, Director, said: “It was a straightforward decision for us to upgrade to the latest version. We have been a Morgana user for 20 years plus, and most of our postpress equipment comes from them, so there was no need to look elsewhere. Morgana equipment is solidly built and has served us very well over that time. “The cross perforation capability was the major attraction. We had been sending that kind of work out, so this machine will put control back in our hands, save production time, and save us money. “The ability of the machine to handle long sheets came a close second as far as features. We run a Xerox iGen and an Iridesse, so the fact that we can handle 660mm long sheets is important, or up to 1,200mm for special products. It’s another feature for us to sell and for our in-house design team to promote.” The wholly digital business was formed some 30-years ago, and includes large format production as well as the Xerox digital presses, some monochrome printers for variable data printing, and a graphic design studio. The company started life in the print world by producing self-adhesive labels,

then morphed into a reprographics company, producing Cromalin proofs for high-end graphic customers, and then became early adopters of digital print. The Morgana DigiFold Pro XL is built with a unique, open design, and a suction feeder that handles stock sizes from 210mm to 1,300mm in length. This heavy duty automatic creasing and folding system is designed to complement mid to high volume digital and offset production presses. This top of the range model folds up to 6,000 A4 per hour, or in “crease only” mode 7,500 per hour. It has a maximum loading capacity 200mm, and a stock range of 80 to 400gsm. The top fed vacuum feeder, ensures stable production for long runs. Full cross perforation is also available, along with the ability to add up to five inline perforation/scoring wheels. The machine is able to create up to 30 creases per sheet. The Morgana DigiFold Pro XL is designed to also complement the long sheet capabilities enabled in the today’s production printers. It features a standard pull-out extension that enables sheet sizes up to 1,300mm to be handled with ease. www.morgana.co.uk

THE IPIA STRENGTHENS LEADERSHIP TEAM Three talented, experienced professionals were recently voted on to the Independent Print Industry Association (IPIA) Council to help steer the organisation and enable it to meet its objectives. Tim Carter, a Director at Ricoh, Matthew Ruff, Sales and Marketing Director at Reliance Worldwide, and John Morley, a Director at eProductivity Software (EPS) all help swell the IPIA Council ranks to 17. In welcoming the three print advocates, IPIA Chairman Graeme Smith says: “2022 marks an incredible year of growth for the IPIA and we’re excited by the energy, insight and diverse knowledge that Tim, Matthew and John bring. We’ve set ourselves some ambitious objectives and their input will be especially invaluable moving forward apace in areas like prioritising ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance), promoting the value of print as part of a channel mix and encouraging a younger and more diverse workforce into the sector.” John has worked in the print industry for many years, enabling partner businesses to acquire new revenue streams, so he sees part of his role within the IPIA as helping members be more successful at promoting print, especially to newer generations where digital is so prevalent. “Using data to personalise the message is a real priority

for print. Digital assets are valuable but the stats prove that the virtual and physical coming together adds greater value and response, so we need to keep pushing that message further upstream with brands, and I can help do that,” says John. He will additionally sit on the IPIA Membership committee and Events committee to help increase membership numbers and ensure business value continues to be derived from IPIA events. Matthew may not be from a print background, but his experience from British Standards Institution (BSI) and of modernising the international mail, ecommerce and courier industry make him a natural collaborator with it. He understands the challenges of logistics, nationally and internationally, and can support members with implementing relevant technology, transparency, collaboration and account management. He was chuffed to be voted onto the IPIA Council and pledges to help grow membership, and bring more diversity from sectors such as process management. He’s also keen to support quality management: “I’m not going audit heavy, just looking at ways to implement and improve, especially in areas like leaving more positive carbon footprints,” he suggests. Tim brings with him decades of OEM technological

know how and a strong international network of people and companies. He feels the print industry has shown massive resilience over the years and supports the IPIA’s focus on maintaining that resilience and empowering members to make behavioural and cultural changes in the face of technological advances and other competing digital content channels. “I’m also pretty passionate about the legacy that we, the print industry, leave. I feel we all have a responsibility to promote our sector as dynamic, enjoyable and fruitful in order to attract and entice younger talent to want to invest their lives in it and make it successful too,” says Tim. Graeme says the IPIA Council is excited about embedding the changes necessary to create a positive national dialogue for print. This is specifically around achieving positive business outcomes as part of overall communications strategies. “The print sector has always faced challenges, but it survives through adaption, knowledge sharing, peer collaboration and finding solutions. With Tim, John and Matthew’s strong networks, I see all three proving a real asset in convincing others that we’re stronger together and of the value that being part of an association like the IPIA can bring,” he says. www.ipia.org.uk

KORNIT DIGITAL AND FASHIONENTER OPEN TEXTILE CENTRE Kornit Digital Ltd a leader in sustainable, on-demand digital fashion and textile production technologies, and Fashion-Enter — a social enterprise, which strives to be a centre of excellence for sampling, grading, production, and for learning and development of skills within the fashion and textiles industry – have announced a first of its kind Fashtech Innovation Centre in London. Aimed at bringing on-demand fashion and textile mass customisation back to the UK, and unveiled recently at Fashion-Enter’s state of the art training and manufacturing site, the Centre is fully supported by Kornit Digital’s revolutionary, direct to fabric and direct to garment digital production solutions. According to Kornit Digital’s Impact and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) report, 30 percent of textile production is overproduction, while 95 percent of water waste is created as companies globally look towards more sustainable futures with customised, creative, and real time offerings. Using proprietary streamlined, eco-friendly digital production technologies, Kornit Digital is transforming the fashion industry with more efficient and sustainable processes. According to the same report, by 2026, the Company’s systems will use up to 95 percent less water, 94 percent less energy and produce 83 percent less greenhouse gas emissions. In addition to highlighting production capabilities that minimise carbon footprint, the Fashtech Innovation Centre serves as a prototype for brands and fulfillers seeking to mitigate logistical complexities, time to market, and supply chain risks by bringing production nearer to the end consumer. Eliminating overproduction and producing on demand, this near shoring model drives profitability even in highly regulated and high cost markets while contributing to local economies and removing transport related waste. “As our partner ecosystem continues to grow globally by aligning with such leaders as Fashion-Enter, companies are realisng just how powerful

6

sustainable, on-demand digital production can be and the countless inherent benefits it provides,” said Chris Govier, President Europe, Middle East, and Africa, Kornit Digital. “We are pleased to put these technologies on full display in our new joint Fashtech Innovation Centre and bring on-demand manufacturing back home to the UK. Whether you’re a brand, apparel provider, custom fabric fulfiller, or creative designer wondering how to handle the next major market disruption, grow product lines, create a more eco-responsible and accountable production floor – or just want to waste less – the Innovation Centre will help you achieve these goals.” Serving as a fulfilment site and academy for training production, the Centre includes both Kornit Presto direct to fabric and Kornit Atlas MAX direct to garment systems, as well as numerous graphic design and workflow tools and systems to enable cut and sew operations for a comprehensive “pixel to parcel to doorstep” cycle. Consolidating the process into a single location helps maintain full visibility and control of operations and products. Taking this one step further for creators and brands, visitors can experience the KornitX Global Fulfilment Network, enabling customers to create both new sales channels and accessibility to enable production on demand. Attendees can see how Kornit’s single step digital production technology empowers unlimited graphic expression using less floor space, resources, waste, and time — all at higher margins. “This Innovation Centre makes it possible to capture the full, end to end production process in one, single location,” said Jenny Holloway, Chief Executive Officer, Fashion-Enter. “The beauty of having print on demand means there are no minimums, so we can make one garment, or we can make up to 30,000 garments a week from all locations at the same fixed cost. Here, we can also train future generations on the right way of producing garments for today, responsive to demand, with minimal waste — ethical and sustainable. This is the future of fashion and textiles.” www.kornit.com • education@fashioncapital.co.uk

NEW PRODUCTS

COMPACT DIE-CUTTING WITH MORGANA’S AERODIECUT The very latest addition to the Morgana Systems range of post press equipment is a unique new die-cutting product – the AeroDieCut from Uchida. Best described as traditional meets digital, this product uses regular cutting and creasing forms, combined with a patented system of “moving press rollers” that provide the pressure necessary to cut through and score the substrate, all housed in a really compact unit. The product represents the platen style die-cutter re-designed for the 21st Century. The AeroDieCut is ideal for short to medium run work, and can process complex cuts, creases, embossing or debossing, and perforations on printed materials in a single pass. Using traditional die-cutting formes means plenty of external suppliers are available to create the cutting element itself – and, as this a mature technology, a competitive price can be almost guaranteed. Add to this the AeroDieCut’s ability produce step and repeat work, where just one cutting forme can be employed to step across a printed sheet up to five times, and the economies become swiftly apparent. AeroDieCut is also a much safer machine to use than the traditional platen style of product – a good number of which are still hand fed devices. Another key feature offered with the AeroDieCut is the ability to produce both embossing and debossing work. These features allow the printer to offer customers something slightly different and classy to embellish their printed work, and something that definitely stands out from the everyday, run of the mill printing. The embossing capability means the unit is also suitable for the production of Braille work – a legal requirement for pharmaceutical packaging, but also a solution for blind and partially sighted people that is being employed on an ever increasing range of printed product. AeroDieCut was designed to be used by anyone, and its compact design is ideal for the smaller print room of today. The AeroDieCut can turn your printed materials into a variety of finished product,

including invitations, cards, boxes, swing tags, and shelf talkers. It’s patented “Tri-suction Feeder” ensures consistent paper feeding. The feeding unit is equipped with an ultrasonic sensor for double feed detection, and a cut mark sensor to compensate for any image shift. Feeding is carefully controlled when the stepand-repeat mode is employed. The four inch coloured touch screen makes job settings and operation easy, with 100 job memories stored in the machine for regular work and often repeated job settings. For the longer run there is an optional separator unit for deflecting cut waste into a bin as the die-cut stock is delivered. The optional conveyor delivery table also makes the collecting process more efficient. Commenting on the introduction, Ray Hillhouse, vice-president offline business at Morgana, said: “This unique new product offers print shops an ideal entry point to the highly lucrative die-cutting

process. Work that was previously sent to a third party supplier can now be produced in-house cost effectively. However, the AeroDieCut offers more to users than just straightforward cutting and creasing. Adding such capabilities as embossing can help a printer to offer something that little bit extra – making an invitation, or even a business card, really stand out and get noticed. The price advantage provided by using a one up forme in a step and repeat mode gives the printer additional margin that could otherwise be lost to the die maker.” The AeroDieCut can accommodate cutting formes of up to 350 x 550mm, with a die board thickness of up to 18mm, and a cutting rule height of 23.323.8mm. Power consumption is 400-watt single phase. The unit can accommodate paper sizes up to 365 x 515mm with a maximum finished size of 310 x 485mm. All of this in a unit measuring just 270cm [w] x 107cm [h] x 110cm [d] and weighing in at 410kg. Running speed is a maximum of 1,000 sheets per hour. Full details of Morgana’s product line-up can be found at: www.morgana.co.uk

NEW MIMAKI 330 SERIES

Mimaki has announced the 330 Series — a brand new, large format inkjet printer range, that includes the JV330-160, CJV330-160 and TS3301600, as well as a new range of CG-AR cutting plotters. Launched during the company’s Global Innovation Days event, the 330 Series leverages Mimaki’s cross platform strategy, to offer a high end yet cost effective printing solution across several sectors. Similarly, the CG-AR Series offers users new workflow enhancing, entry level cutting plotter technologies available in three sizes. Both launches align with Mimaki’s objective to grow both its high end and entry level product range, to further encourage and support customers expanding and improving upon their printing services and product offering.

INTRODUCING MIMAKI’S LATEST PRINTERS – THE 330 SERIES

Following on from the success of the 100 and 300 Plus Series, the 330 Series has been developed to offer mid to high end printing models, focusing on high image quality and productivity. As a company renowned for its high colour range, Mimaki’s newest printers can achieve high resolution, durable prints for both the Sign Graphic and Textile industries. The JV330-160 and CJV330-160 eco-solvent inkjet printers deliver the high standard of colour required for indoor and outdoor sign graphics through the new “Deep Color Natural” input profile, offering eye catching and vivid solid colours, natural skin tones as well as deep reds and neutral greys. In-built cleaning mechanisms and monitoring features ensure an efficient workflow and allow for longer running times. Both models feature a newly designed unwinding system that allows three rolls of media to be loaded simultaneously, greatly reducing the time and labour required to change print media. One operator can bring the desired media into position simply by turning the media changer. Another standard feature is an “XY slitter” — a highly precise cutting technology, which provides in-line X-axis and Y-axis sheet fed cutting. This eliminates the unwinding and manual cutting from the workflow, helping printers to significantly speed up and streamline the post-

10

All products in the series are fitted with ‘Mimaki Weaving Dot Technology’ (MWDT), a technology that changes the order of ink droplet placement depending on the printing conditions. ‘Mimaki Remote Access’ (MRA) is also available across the series, improving ease of operation by allowing users to remotely access the machine and check the printer’s status.

process, with less interference needed. Hybrid Services is Mimaki’s distributor for the UK and Ireland, and the company exclusively presented the new CJV330-160 at the Sign & Digital UK exhibition last month. Hybrid’s reseller account manager, Martin Southworth, reported a strong uptake for the new technology. “Mimaki have once again pushed forwards with intuitive, cost effective and high quality solutions.” The JV330-160 print only model as well as the CJV330-160 integrated printer/cutter will be available globally from this April. In addition to the Sign Graphics solutions, Mimaki has also released the TS330-1600, a sublimation transfer inkjet printer, for the textile industry. Enabling both high production and high image quality, and equipped with new functions to improve stable operation, the TS330-1600 can achieve a printing speed of 69sq m/h in draft mode with a for colour ink set, with the fastest mode reaching up to 135sq m/h. The TS330-1600 has optional add ons to further increase efficiency, including a 10kg ink tank supply unit which reduces ink cost when compared to the standard 2L ink pack, and allows for longer continuous printing. A mini jumbo roll unit can also be added to load large rolls of transfer paper and further reduce running costs. An improved take up system featuring dual motors equipped on both sides of the printer distributes the load and strengthens the winding power, allowing stable winding of printed paper even for long runs. TxLink4, Mimaki’s RIP software dedicated to the textile market is included with every TS330-1600.

INCREASING EFFICIENCY WITH ENTRYLEVEL CG-AR PLOTTING CUTTER SERIES

Alongside the 330 Series, Mimaki has also launched the CG-AR Series cutting plotters. Available in three different sizes (CG-60AR, CG-100AR and CG-130AR), these plotters go above and beyond currently available entry level options. Recognising customer demand for shorter delivery times, the new models provide increased speed and accuracy, all with user friendly operability. In addition, the cutters have the ability to handle a diverse range of materials, such as PVC, fluorescent and reflective sheets. The Mimaki CG-AR Series is also equipped with Mimaki Remote Access, and features Mimaki’s ID Cut function, which allows integrated print and cut operations when used in combination with a Mimaki printer, by automatically retrieving cutting data via a barcode. The product range will be released worldwide in April 2022, and Hybrid will again provide visitors to Sign & Digital UK with an exclusive look at models from the range. “Following the positive reception of the 100 Series among our customer base, we saw, from Sign Graphics to Textile, that there is a significant market demand for more cost effective, mid to high end technologies,” says Arjen Evertse, General Manager Sales EMEA. “This is the drive behind our newest cross platform technology, the 330 Series. Adhering to our strategy of enhancing production efficiencies and streamlining workflows, the new capabilities of this series cater to customers across various sectors, who are looking to improve on quality and delivery time. We look forward to demonstrating these products to customers and prospects alike at FESPA 2022 in Berlin.” www.hybridservices.co.uk

NO HIDING PLACE IN PRINT!

Customers never fail to surprise, which is just as well as it gives Martin Christie a rich resource for this column. But it does mean that you can never take anything for granted, especially if you are fooled into thinking they know what they are doing.

Taking a series of bracket shots to get correct exposure — although we know the tree is the subject of interest, the camera doesn’t!

T

he ones who freely admit they haven’t a clue are much easier, as you are forewarned, and you can take them in hand and guide them through all the possibilities. But then there are those with whom you spend a lot of time on the phone but are never quite sure if they listen to the important bits. So a customer would like a large print to fit in a frame but is not sure of the size of the frame — just that it’s big. So they have a frame but not the photograph and want to know the best way to get a photo suitable to fit it. Well, the best advice starts with using the best possible camera available, assuming they are not employing a professional to do it for them. And it sounds promising. A Canon DSLR with a reasonable pixel count and a half-decent lens should be up to the task. Enlarging an image up to any size is all about how good the original file is, much more than any magic with computer software. That’s one of the hardest things to explain to anyone who doesn’t actually work with pixels and assumes they can just be duplicated and stretched to infinity and beyond like they do in the movies. Even beginning with a good camera, it’s still preferable to give it as much help as possible for the best results — making sure the subject is well lit, not moving too fast for the shutter speed, and the camera is held steady when shooting. All fundamental techniques, even for an amateur photographer, but so basic they wouldn’t be mentioned in the glossy sales blurb that boasts complex technical specifications and promises performance rarely matched in the real world. Printing is always the harsh reality in 14

photography — it always has been. No matter how it looks on a small digital screen, committed to paper, all the mistakes and shortcomings are exposed and often magnified. And it’s got nothing to do with the number of pixels and everything to do with their individual qualities. And so this job’s files arrive, and they don’t even get as far as ink and paper, and duly sent straight back to the customer as unsuitable. So a couple more follow — nope, sorry, these are no better. How have they managed to get things so wrong after all this build-up? A little investigation into Adobe Lightroom and Bridge’s hidden data reveals some answers. The files, in fact, come from three different devices, none of which has managed to come up with a decent image. One from the proper camera has the most pixels but is just badly exposed and totally out of focus. Another from a Sony compact is not bad but way too small for more than A4, and the third, from an iPhone, which doesn’t look too bad on-screen but totally breaks up as soon as you pull it up to any sort of size. So, where did it all go wrong? Well, using automatic settings basically, relying on the camera to do all the clever stuff. For example, it’s all very well using autofocus, but you need to give the camera a clue what you want to focus on, especially as sophisticated DSLRs may have a dozen or more different focus functions. Similarly with exposure, unless you give it some guidance, the camera will take an average of all the light entering the lens and react accordingly. In theory, shooting in decent daylight is always a good idea, but better if clouds slightly obscure the sun to avoid harsh shadows and highlights. Winter sun is

especially harsh as it is low in the sky, and if you then put your subject in trees where the light is randomly scattered. Our eyes quickly adjust to these conditions to decide what is important - the camera doesn’t have that option left to its own decision making, and the result will always be an unhappy compromise between darkness and light. Back in the days of film, we learnt to bracket — shooting several shots with slightly different exposures. Cameras had a very basic light meter, and we would look at what that advised and then shoot a series of photos with settings either side to be sure of getting close to what we wanted. But that was last century stuff. Now, there’s no excuse as any of the higher range cameras will do even those basic actions for you and do a burst of alternatives that can then be blended together on the computer to produce the best possible result. But beyond that, and especially if the images have been shot using the camera’s RAW format, you can cheat and simulate bracketing in Adobe Lightroom by making virtual copies with different develop settings. This is a more complicated way of editing a single image but may be more appropriate when you have those massive differences between highlights and shadows. Winter sun not only has those contrasts but is also very cold in colour terms; it does not have the yellow warmth of high midsummer, so you need to explain that to the digital brain of the camera, which expects by default the sky to be blue, roses to be red and grass to be green. Our brains adjust to that from thousands of years of evolution, whereas digital technology has had only a few decades to learn and evolve. And it’s still learning. APRIL 2022 • QUICK PRINT PRO

PIXEL PROPHET The problem of the digital capture of that colour is then magnified when taken to print because the machines that translate the electronic data into hard copy are making their own decisions on what the result will be. Another step further from the original is when even that ‘original’ is just a mathematical spectre. As you will know, most customers are under the illusion that what they have is something real and have difficulty getting their heads around the fact that it is simply a sequence of numbers that can be rearranged as they are moved from one device to another. However, once you understand that there is nothing ‘strange’ in the digital transfer of images and information — it’s only a matter of possibilities, not certainties. Mistakes may be unexpected, but they are not unpredictable. Digital photography is all about reducing the possibility of errors — the technology does not eliminate them itself. It may sound very cold and calculating compared to the more inspirational nature of traditional film, which is probably why many purists still cling to celluloid. But until so-called smartphones and the like are smart enough to go out and be creative on their own, that is the reality. Printing digital images have massively helped me understand what I do with the camera, much as working in the darkroom did with film. But as so few photographers print these days, I can see why they struggle to come to terms with the necessary skills and why the average user has even less chance of comprehending. Mistakes are easily disguised in small images shared online. But there is no hiding place in print. One of the most common misconceptions is the ‘something you can do on the computer’ syndrome. From the earliest days, there have been claims of magic bullet software that would enhance digital images fuelled today by popular fantasy dramas. But as with our friend with the ‘very good camera’ what you can do is only as good as what you’ve been given. Recognising that is as much down to experience as science, and most of that experience is going to be trial and error. One little trick that had slipped under my radar is an aid in sharpening Lightroom images. Adobe has a habit of failing to flag up really useful things and major on things that are more of a gimmick. Somewhere along the line of recent updates, they introduced a very practical visual display of real-time adjustment of sharpness and the granular interference, which we call noise. This is always an issue for printing as when things get bigger, the contrast between one pixel and another is clearly defined — or not as the case may be. QUICK PRINT PRO • APRIL 2022

Never underestimate useful features in Adobe’s Lightroom

For years I’ve used the very excellent Nik software for input and output sharpening as it recognises the difference in adjusting for display or print and even viewing distance. But this little Lightroom trick is really fast and very friendly. In the Develop module, you have an option called Detail which contains sliders for Sharpening with various strength options, as well as a complimentary set for Noise reduction. Now, on their own, moving these sliders may look a bit haphazard and hard to judge the exact results. However, if you hold the Alt key down in Windows, or Option on a Mac (it’s third key bottom left whatever), you will see that the image is desaturated of confusing colour and as you move any one of the sliders — only the pixels affected by the action are shown. How useful is that? The peril for printing is often that you can sharpen too much, and while it may look ok on screen, the printed result is less acceptable. But then, by using Lightroom’s Virtual Copy option, you can do a series of tests and print a contact sheet to see which works best. Even better, if you have a series of images that will need the same adjustment, you can apply the same settings to any number of them by synchronising them. Creating a contact sheet in Lightroom is much easier than using Photoshop once you get used to the different workspace layout. You can create personal templates for regular jobs or modify any of the options

already installed by Adobe. The difference between the LR print module and Photoshop is that as well as the page size, you also select the printer and then arrange your layout and image quantities accordingly. You move the rows and columns around by adjusting the corresponding margins, which also determines the size of each image. This makes it very flexible if you change your mind on the layout. In Photoshop, you have to start again or manually move the individual bits around, which is timeconsuming. Lots of useful information can also be printed on the contact sheet, not just the title and size. It can be really useful as a reference guide and saved as a future print. One thing to check though is that Lightroom controls the print output, so be sure to select whether you want the printer or the program to provide colour management and select the appropriate profile. I do not recommend using any print sharpening or brightness/contrast options available in the LR print module, as that may undo any good work you have already done in Develop. Lightroom is much underused in the print on demand industry. Still, it is much more than a photographic program — the more you get to know it, the more valuable it will become in that critical issue of spotting a possible problem and knowing how quickly you can solve it! 15

P

rintwear & Promotion LIVE! 2022 opens its doors on Sunday, April 24, the garment decoration industry is readying itself for the unmissable reunion. After a hiatus in 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic, the exhibition returns in full force to Hall 12. As the industry’s annual meeting place and launch pad for new equipment, accessories and clothing lines, the show will provide an excellent opportunity for high street digital printers to discover how garment decoration and personalisation could be a beneficial and profitable addition to their business. Event director, Tony Gardner, says: “Once again the show will feature equipment launches in abundance, new clothing lines, and plenty of other products and services to be explored! The usual vibrant and interactive environment that Printwear & Promotion LIVE! provides will be enhanced this year by around 20 new exhibitors joining us for the first time! “As well as the opportunity to meet all of the major suppliers and if you’re relatively new to garment decoration to learn from the host of industry experts present.” Many print service providers have already made the move into this exciting market and reaped the rewards. Come along to the show to find out just how quick, easy and cost-effective it can be for your business to get your add-on up and running. This year’s talking point is sure to be the introduction of direct to film printing systems. A process that uses a specific kind of water-based ink to print a film transfer, which is then transferred directly onto garments and other substrates. The process is seen as an alternative to direct to garment printing, which first entered the scene 15 years ago. Discover options perfect for those already immersed in garment decoration and beginners alike, including: • The R-Jet PRO DTF — a standalone wide format printer. The transfers produce vibrant images with no requirement for pre-treatment. The printer is a joint venture between TheMagicTouch and Resolute DTG, with both stocking and supplying the associated films and inks required. • The new Mutoh/STS VJ-628D printer. The 630mm wide compact desktop printer, manufactured by Mutoh in Japan, is based 18

on Mutoh’s proven Valuejet 628 8-channel printer chassis and Epson industrial print head. This is also being demoed on TheMagicTouch’s stand. • Dye Sublimation Supplies will be unveiling its exciting range of direct to film printers and consumables. Three models will be on stand; a large format 60cm system, a mid-range 30cm version and a desktop A3 set-up. • Another stand to visit to see DTF printing in action is R A Smart. The machinery supplier will be showcasing a full DTF solution on stand. R A Smart has partnered with a pioneering producer of the entire DTF package, with patented

ink and application technology developed over the past four years. • New exhibitor Indie Ink will be launching its showstopping IndieJet Pro DTF printer at an unbeatable price. This printer is the perfect entry level printer to get you started on your DTF journey. DTF printing is also made possible through the adaptation of direct to garment printers. Current users of the Epson SureColor SCF2100 and SureColor SC-F2000, the Polyprint Texjet or Brother GTX direct to garment printers should visit J&B Sewing Machine Co, Amaya Sales UK and MHM Direct GB’s stands respectively to find out how to adapt these printers for DTF printing.

SHOWTIME: SIGN & DIGITAL

SHOWTIME

SIGN & DIGITAL FIRST CUTS As we go to print the QPP roving reporting team are taking turns at the show in Birmingham. This initial report will be followed up daily on the web live and in the next hard copy magazine. As a true sign of the times this reporting lark is proving perpetual. NESCHEN PARTNERS WITH PREMIER

Distributed in the UK by Art Systems, Neschen product highlights included Easy Dot PET Matt, a polyester film with a matt white surface for photorealistic prints with UV and latex inks, suitable for indoor applications such as trade show graphics, special sales promotions and point of sale advertising. Visitors also saw examples of Neschen PP Wall-Grip L-UV Smooth, a PVC-free adhesive film that offers a green alternative for use in a wide variety of creative wall decors. The film, which can be printed using latex and UV-curable inks, is available in sizes of 137.2cm x 50cm and 160cm x 50cm. Also showcased was Solvoprint Easy Dot Matt, a high quality solution for latex and UV gel inks. Dot shaped glue on the film allows easy and bubble free positioning, making it an ideal choice for short to midterm applications such as trade show graphics, seasonal sales and, when used in combination with a slip resistant protection film, floor graphics. Also on show was Solvoprint Performance Wall-Grip on Premier’s stand. This new, high performance, high tack adhesive film is suitable for a variety of difficult substrates. Supplied in sizes of 137.2cm x 50cm and 160cm x 50cm, the film can be applied on flat and slightly curved surfaces, as well as special surfaces like plastic containers or surfaces that are exposed to higher mechanical wear. www.artsystems.co.uk

RICOH AND JOSERO STAND TOGETHER

Ricoh showed its Ricoh Pro L5160e large format printer on Josero’s stand. The option of orange and green inks extends the colour gamut and allows the accurate reproduction of a wider range of Pantone and brand colours. Incorporating three staggered Ricoh print heads, the L5160e can achieve print speeds of 46.7 sqm/hour on outdoor high speed four colour mode and 25 sqm/ hour on indoor standard four colour mode. The machine was running in the double CMYK mode to showcase the incredible productivity of the technology. As well as this high productivity mode — and the orange and green inks for extended colour gamut — the L5160e printer can also be set up with CMYK plus white for transfer materials, metallics and 20

dark substrates. Stewart Cobby, Inkjet Sales Manager at Ricoh UK, said: “There has been an ever increasing demand for our popular large format printer range; we will have key representatives from our team on Josero’s stand throughout the event to answer any queries. “We’re very much looking forward to meeting with current and potential customers and industry peers at the upcoming event and demonstrating the latest advances in our latex technology.” Sarah Winterbottom, Managing Director at Josero, adds: “We are very happy to have Ricoh supporting us on the stand this year and having the opportunity to showcase the Ricoh L5160e. www.ricoh.co.uk

HYBRID LAUNCH NEW MIMAKI

Hybrid Services debuted the new Mimaki JFX600-2513 LED-UV. Designed to address the high volume UV market, the JFX600 was among a raft of new Mimaki solutions shown for the first time. Engineered for high speeds and high productivity, the new flatbed offers print service providers a broader variety of applications thanks to a wider range of ink types and increased media flexibility.

Hybrid’s Reseller Account Manager, Martin Southworth anticipates strong uptake of the new model. “Mimaki’s on-going response to market demand for increased productivity, quality and innovation has shaped the development of this new flatbed. Providing a hugely capable solution for companies looking to boost their capacity and introduce new levels of creativity, we foresee significant opportunities with the JFX600.” The JFX600-2513 is an 8’ x 4’ flatbed and builds on the success of Mimaki’s significant heritage in the sector. With the aim of tackling the high end UV flatbed market, the new model incorporates 16 print heads, resulting in significant speed increases over models that currently sit within the Mimaki line-up. The printer’s wide variety of ink sets facilitates vibrant, intense colours perfect for producing striking indoor and outdoor signage and display graphics, and the incorporation of white, clear and primer broaden the printer’s creative opportunities even further. Thanks to Mimaki’s seventh generation UV print technology, the range of media this new model supports opens the door for a myriad of applications including grand format signage, interior décor and display graphics. With a maximum printing area of 2.5m x 1.3m and a thickness of 6cm, the JFX600-2513 is compatible with standard size signboards, and its direct to substrate capabilities also allows for printing on resin, wood, glass, and metal. The JFX600 is also capable of ‘2.5D’ multi-layered printing, creating raised texture effects for high value, tactile applications. www.hybridservices.co.uk

PREMIER BOOST SERVICE TO DISPLAY GRAPHICS CUSTOMERS Premier’s Dartford facility has undergone a series of developments to help ensure that the merchant meets the ever growing demand of the sign and display industry. In 2019 Premier, one of the UK’s suppliers of paper, packaging and print media, opened the doors to their new 48,000 square feet facility in Dartford. Since then, the merchant has invested in a series of technology and equipment to help meet the needs of their display graphics customers. Steve Jones, Premier’s Director for Display Sheets and Thermoplastic, explains “Customer expectations are shifting. Increasingly, customers have different requirements that need alternative solutions with a rapid response and turnaround. Realistically, this can only be delivered when offered from under one roof.” Premier has invested significantly in state of the art conversion machinery to ensure that every customer requirement can be delivered from the same location, helping to speed up and improve the conversion service offered to customers of thermoplastic products. One such machine is the Schelling FK6, a plastic and composite panel saw, that cuts with speed and precision, on sheets up to 120mm thick. Premier also added the Cauhe GH 366, a high performance, heavy duty guillotine with the ability to cut up to 3,660mm wide sheets. Both machines join a semi-automated, wall mounted Streibig Saw, giving Premier increased capabilities to cut products including Plexiglas, Foamalux, Etalbond, Marlon FSX and many more. Jones continues, “We have grown our depot in line with our customer demand. By listening to our customers’ needs, we have developed a

22

conversion hub that strengthens our capabilities, giving them ease of access to all of our services.” Premier operate their own dedicated delivery fleet and nationwide stock holding branches throughout the UK. Recent additions to Premier’s fleet include a series of 18 tonne delivery vehicles that have been designed specifically to Premier’s specifications. Featuring some of the latest innovations in clean emissions and road safety, the vehicles also have a unique twin floor trailer which is fitted with cameras, a bungee cord strapping system and reinforced side curtains. The trailers are comprised of a 400mm high lower level compartment as well as a seven foot high upper compartment, allowing for the protected and stabilised transportation of wide format media. “There are so many benefits to Premier, in having our own fleet,” explained Steve, “But by far the biggest beneficiaries are our customers, as orders can often require an urgent response and our teams are permanently on hand waiting to provide just that.” These investments further highlight Premier’s commitment to the future and to improving the overall levels of service provided to their customers. SHOWTIME: THE PRINT SHOW

MORGANA HAILS THE PRINT SHOW ‘PERFECT TIMING’ Print finishing technology leader Morgana Systems has become the latest leading name to sign up to exhibit at The Print Show 2022, revealing it will use the event to showcase a range of brand new products. A long term and dedicated supporter of The Print Show, Morgana has enjoyed tremendous success at previous editions of the show and will once again use the event to demonstrate its portfolio of leading print finishing solutions. Ray Hillhouse, Vice President of sales and marketing for the Plockmatic Group Offline Business Unit, parent company of Morgana, said as the exhibition is the only national industry event on the calendar, The Print Show offers the manufacturer the perfect opportunity to connect with existing and potential customers. “We will hope to meet as many of our existing customers and industry prospects as we can during the event,” Hillhouse said. “It will be a delight to see so many industry friends in one place — and haven’t we missed such occasions! It will be exciting to see what new developments and enhancements will be exhibited. “Morgana has enjoyed success at all the previous Print Show events, so we had no hesitation in signing up for what will be the only national industry event this calendar year. We look forward to welcoming even more print companies along to the

NEC and being part of another successful show.” As to what product Morgana will be displaying at The Print Show this year, Hillhouse said visitors can look forward to a wide ranging showcase of its leading technology, including a host of new solutions. This will include the new DigiFold Pro XL, which launched last year and will be given its exhibition debut at The Print Show in September. “We’ve been delighted at the reception already given to the long sheet development of this popular creasing, folding and perforating unit,” Hillhouse said. “The cross-perforation capability has also been

welcomed by a great many. “At this early stage I would anticipate automation will be a key word for many exhibits at the show. As companies have had to muddle their way through the various lockdowns, many have sadly had to shed staff members, so any finishing functions that can be further automated will be welcomed I am quite sure. “The Print Show will once again be the place for the UK industry to gather — it will be a delight to once again meet with both old friends and make new ones.” www.theprintshow.co.uk • www.morgana.co.uk

PREMIER CUSTOMERS CREATE NEW HEDGEROWS Premier has teamed up with some of their customers and the Woodland Trust, to create new hedgerows in West Yorkshire. It is said that when the skies are clear and sun is shining there is no better place to be than out in the countryside. That couldn’t be truer when talking about the picturesque town of Keighley, nestled between the Airedale countryside and the Haworth Moorland in West Yorkshire; the location of Premier’s most recent tree planting day. With clear blue skies the weather could not have been more perfect as staff from Premier’s Leeds branch teamed up with their Carbon Capture® customers and, with shovels in hand, took part in a special tree planting project to support the Woodland Trust’s MOREhedges scheme. As part of the Woodland Trust’s woodland creation initiative, MOREhedges provides saplings, advice and funding for new hedging projects of 100-1000 metres, at sites around the UK. Hedgerows are important features of the countryside as they create new wildlife corridors that connect trees with the surrounding landscape. Throughout the day, Premier and their customers successfully helped to plant over 500 saplings, including species of tree such as field maple, hawthorn, hazel and crab apple. These saplings will form part of a planned 600m of hedgerow

for the area and will help to provide landscape corridors with the adjacent woodland areas as well as beneficial habitats that support small mammals, birds and insects. Hussein Ismail, Premier’s Sustainable Business Director comments “This was not only Premier’s first tree planting event of the year but it was also the first one that we’ve been able to host in Yorkshire. The weather was on our side and we’re thankful to everybody who attended, planted trees and helped to create a fantastic day.” Premier’s work with the Woodland Trust began over ten years ago. The programme has grown to become the industry’s leading environmental

initiative with well over 600 customers fully signed up and committed to the cause. To date Premier and their customers have raised in excess of £1.37m for the Woodland Trust, planting over 354,000 trees and capturing over 82,000 tonnes of CO₂; and the best part is 100% of all money raised through the Carbon Capture® programme, goes directly to the Woodland trust to help create and maintain native woodland around the UK. EMERALD HOUSE PAINTS A GREEN PICTURE WITH HP Corby-based point-of-sale specialist Emerald House Associates has revealed its purchase of an HP Latex R2000 printer from approved HP distributor Papergraphics has helped to enhance its environmental credentials and satisfy an increasing demand from customers for more planet friendly work. Founded 25 years ago, Emerald House is one of the leading providers of point of sale displays to airports across the UK and Ireland. The company also carries out a wide range of shop fitting work, partnering with leading brands such as Chanel, Selfridges and Harrods. Recent years have seen client demand for more environmentally friendly work sharply increase as more customers seek to shine a light on the sustainability of their own operations. Emerald House responded with the purchase of its new HP Latex R2000, which, thanks to its use of water based inks, offers a significantly more sustainable option than UV or solvent-based technology. The HP Latex R2000 was installed at Emerald House’s Corby facility in May 2021 and has since been used to produce a wide range of planet friendly printed work for the company’s expansive customer base. “We have a number of customers that are

HP HIGHLIGHTS THREE KEY LFP TRENDS

Print business leaders are looking to grow and adapt to meet urgent customer demands, as well as develop new offerings to help clients enter new markets. While all print companies know they need to become more efficient, focus on costs and improve workflow with the use of technology, they must also look at how they can apply this to address wider trends. In response to this demand, HP has recently identified three core trends currently being embraced by the print industry and has released a free to download article aimed at helping print businesses set themselves up for future success. The first trend identified by HP relates to how content and creativity are driving transformation across the entire industry. Customers are requesting unique

ideas and more creative solutions and it is up to print businesses to step up and shape the future. The second trend focuses on automation; while business leaders must pay close attention to sales growth, they must also look at customer service and profitability by ensuring their operations run effectively. Finally, an overarching trend impacting business in print – and elsewhere – is that of sustainability. A recent HP study found 85% of print service providers say their customers are demanding both sustainable products and practices, and it is up to the printer to respond. www.hp.com

NEW PROFIT CENTRE

DIGITAL 23 INVESTS IN A MIMAKI UJV55-320 Wiltshire-based Digital 23 has purchased a Mimaki UJV55-320 from CMYUK. The 3.2m-wide UV LED roll to roll printer investment has enabled the business to now print all its textile work in-house, and provides a versatile platform from which it can expand into new markets. “The Mimaki UJV55-320 is a gamechanger for us due to its size, speed and versatility. What its allowed us to do is increase our product range and our production throughput time. We were previously outsourcing our fabric printing, with a four day turnaround time. Now we can print as soon as a job is approved and the job is completed on the same day, saving us three days of production time. It’s a win/win for sales and production,” says Calvin Hedley, joint owner of Digital 23.

NEW START-UP IN THE FACE OF COVID

Digital 23 was set-up by Calvin and his business partner, David Pape in 2019. Both have extensive experience in the exhibitions industry, and decided that rather than working for anyone else, they would go it alone. A full service large format digital printing business, Digital 23 specialises in exhibition graphics and services a diverse client base. Silicon edge tension graphics, wall wraps, fabric prints and frames boards account for the majority of its printed output. We have built up a loyal base of clients who have followed us through a progression of several different companies, so when we set up on our own we had an established customer base from day one,” says Calvin. Digital 23 started out with HP technology but during lockdown added a Mimaki solvent printer, the CJV30–130, which gave it the much needed ability to print and cut. The move to investing in a 3.2m wide UV printer was a natural progression. “We were looking at 3.2m wide machines as we were basically farming out our fabric print work and then finishing the prints in house as required. We had a really busy few months from August to November last year that just highlighted that fact that it made sense to bring the production of fabrics back in house,” says Calvin, adding, “The Mimaki UJV55-320 fulfilled our primary goals but also because of the UV technology, we could add the versatility to produce a much wider range of printed substrates. We have also switched all our Foamex board production over to it. It’s given us the opportunity to expand into other markets like interior décor because we now have full control and can offer competitive pricing and improved service.”

CMYUK

From its launch, Calvin had been in touch with CMYUK, and thanks to a lead from hardware sales director, Sue Hayward, sourced a Mimaki solvent printer at an excellent price. Therefore, when it came to investing in a 3.2m wide machine, CMYUK was the first port of call. “We had a really good relationship with CMYUK so it was the obvious go to place. Sales Director, Sue Hayward is really knowledgeable and expertly guided us through the whole process,” says Calvin.

ONWARDS AND UPWARDS

This side of Covid, Digital 23 intends to consolidate its position, touch base with its existing clients and then begin to widen its fabric and board services to new customers. Asking about forward plans, Calvin says, “Eighteen months ago, our future plans wouldn’t have included lockdown, so it’s been tricky to plan ahead. That said, the exhibition industry has begun to bounce back well after the past 18 month of Covid restrictions with strong activity at the end of 2021. Moving into 2022 after a slow start due to uncertainty at Christmas over renewed restrictions the end of the first quarter is looking very strong and we’ve got everything we need to ensure we can meet and exceed our customers’ needs.” www.cmyuk.com

THE JOKE’S ON YOU

READERS’ SCRIBES

SOMETHING TO SHARE? APRIL FOOLS’ ROUND-UP

Did you hear about the guy who swapped the labels on the pumps at the gas station? It was an April Fuels’ joke. Why was the donkey annoying his friend? It was April Mules’ Day. Why was everyone so tired on April 1st? Because they just finished a long 31-day March. What’s a stepladder’s favourite holiday? April Stools’ Day. What did April Fools’ Day say after it won an award? Prank you. What do you call a hammer bought on April 1st? An April tool. What do you say when it’s raining chickens and ducks on April Fools’ Day? It’s fowl spring weather. Why do eggs like April Fools’ Day? They love practical yolks.

HANDS ON YOUR HEAD

As a group of robbers entered the bank, their leader went to the manager and asked him to open the vault. He threatened the manager by saying, “If you try to do anything smart, you’re fiction.” The manager was confused and asked him, “Don’t you mean ‘You are history’?” The robber angrily replied back, “Do not change the subject, OKAY?”

SSHHHH

I was in the library once when a man walked in asking for some ham and cheese. The librarian politely told him that he was in a library. The man first apologised and then whispered to the librarian, “Can I please have some ham and cheese?”

TOILET HUMOUR

A couple of pranksters broke into the local police station and stole all the lavatory equipment. A spokesperson was quoted as saying, “We have absolutely nothing to go on.”

THE DISHES

My wife asked me why I was doing the dishes while sitting down. Told her it’s because I can’t stand doing it.

I found a vinyl record called “Sounds of the Wasps.”

SHORTS! IN THIS WEATHER?

Last night, I dreamed I was swimming in an ocean of orange soda. But it was just a Fanta sea. I quit my job as a postman when they gave me my first letter to deliver, I thought this isn’t for me! Will glass coffins be a success? Remains to be seen. I was wondering why the ball was getting bigger. Then it hit me. What monster plays the most April Fools’ jokes? Prankenstein. I have a new job, telling people about the benefits of dried grapes... I am raisin awareness! Why couldn’t the man 3D printing his face control his excitement? He was getting a head of himself. What kind of liquid does a pig’s printer use? Oink. My HP printer died today. It was like a Brother to me. Imagine having a money printer. That would be mint. Did you hear about the solitary T shirt printer? He’s going to dye-sub alone. Why did the printer go to the gym? To get toner. Came up with the perfect name for my printer earlier; the Device Formerly Known as Prints.

3D PRINTERS

A guy walks into a bar and orders a beer. “I’m pretty excited,” the guy tells the bartender. “I just got one of those 3D printers. They say I can even make a gun on it.” “Ha, I’m not impressed,” the bartender scoffs. “I’ve had a canon printer for years.”

NOT VERY PC

A guy is rolling down the pavement in an office chair. He has a laptop under one arm, a phone under the other. A portable printer on his lap. He has a small wastepaper basket on his head. A swingline stapler in his shirt pocket. The local Policeman spots him and says, “what do you think you are doing?” “Impersonating an office, sir.”

SINKING SHIP

I Renamed my iPod The Titanic, so when I plug it in, it says “The Titanic is syncing.”

When I played it, I said to myself…

SHORT ORBIT

A man asks a widow if he can say a word at the funeral. He goes up to the podium and says “plethora”. He leaves the podium as she says gratefully, “thank you. That means a lot.”

PUNS YOU CAN PRINT

I’m reading a book about anti-gravity. It’s impossible to put down! Did you hear about the restaurant on the moon? I heard the food was good, but it had no atmosphere. How did the picture end up in jail? It was framed! Need an ark to save two of every animal? I Noah guy. My friend drove his expensive car into a tree and found out how his Mercedes bends. Did you hear about the guy whose whole left side was cut off? He’s all right now. What do you call a bee that can’t make up its mind? A may-bee. You really shouldn’t be intimidated by advanced maths. It’s easy as pi! My new girlfriend works at the zoo. I think she’s a keeper. To the man who invented zero — thanks for nothing. I couldn’t remember how to throw a boomerang, but then it came back to me. I asked a French man if he played video games. He said Wii! What should a lawyer always wear to a court? A good lawsuit! Don’t interrupt someone working intently on a puzzle. Chances are, you’ll hear some crosswords. What was the one thing the cross-eyed teacher couldn’t control? His pupils. Coffee has a rough time in our household. It gets mugged every single morning! What did one blade of grass say to another about the lack of rain? “I guess we’ll just have to make dew.” Somebody stole all my lamps. I couldn’t be more de-lighted! The past, present, and future walk into a bar. It was tense! What do you call someone who can’t stick with a diet? A desserter.

“This doesn’t sound like wasps.”

I was right. I was playing the B-side.
