Hippoprint invests in Mimaki JV400-160SUV BUILDING a brand that stands out from the crowd is some achievement but with its signature pink hippopotamus, Wakefield based Hippoprint has an identity that’s as strong as its product. When that product is an absolute guarantee of next day delivery on its ever expanding range of printed materials, it’s important to keep to it, so company owner Anthony Wood is totally committed to investing in the right systems and technology. With products that encompass everything from traditional business stationery and leaflets, to stickers, pull up banners and t-shirts, Hippoprint’s wide format capabilities are understandably strong. Currently on a programme of replacing its printer arsenal with Mimaki solutions, Wood was party to an early look at the new JV400-160SUV on a recent visit to Mimaki’s UK and Irish distributor, Hybrid Services with reseller Granthams. The new machine had only just arrived in the showroom, but so impressed was Wood with the trials the Hybrid and Granthams technicians were running — and based on his positive experience with existing Mimaki equipment — he ordered one on the spot. “Being the first print company in the UK to install a 1.6m JV400-SUV means we stay at the forefront of the rapid turnaround sector,” says Wood. “We need the capability to instantly finish prints and get them to our customers the next day.” The Mimaki JV400-SUV features a substantial colour gamut, unique glossy print and a highly durable finish — perfect for work that Wood envisages Hippoprint producing. “We frequently supply high colour posters and pull up banners with large ink loads but it can be a real challenge to finish them the same day as they’re printed,” he says. “The SUV means we can print and send within a matter of minutes and with 95% of our orders coming late in the day, it takes a little bit of the pressure off.” Retaining customers can be a test for any online business, but Wood has created a real loyalty from customers who have bought into his ethos. “We’re here to provide the absolute best service for our customers so we’ll do crazy things to ensure it happens,” he says. Whether that’s meeting customer’s

trains with boxes of business cards as they travel through railway stations or swapping unused stocks of obsolete paper for homemade cake with local artists and schools, it’s a commitment that’s paying off. An order from Kensington Palace appeared in his inbox recently, proving that a combination of great customer reviews and a significant investment in marketing goes a long way to getting royal approval. “We take a pride in our niche,” concludes Wood. “Hippoprint is simply about being the best and fastest printers.” Hippoprint’s website, www.hippoprint.co.uk, provides a one-stop shop for business stationery and promotional products. The full range of Mimaki’s products can be found at www.hybridservices.co.uk and authorised Mimaki reseller, Granthams, can be contacted via www. granthams.co.uk.

HRH The Duke of York at The Printing Charity’s 186th luncheon THE Duke of York was the guest of honour at The Printing Charity’s 186th Annual Luncheon on 7 November at Stationers’ Hall, London, where he spoke about his efforts focused on education, skills and SMEs to support the UK’s economic success. His Royal Highness said: “Young people are our future. The UK’s prosperity depends on having the right skills for the future, increasing young people’s aspirations and encouraging businesses to take on apprentices… The Printing Charity has a long tradition of consistent work and its current efforts to encourage young people into the printing industry are commendable.” Jon Wright, Chairman of The Printing Charity, welcomed over 180 guests to the event, saying that 2012 was a fantastic year for the charity, with a 14 per cent increase in the number of people helped throughout the UK, and a record number of applicants and winners for the Print Futures Awards. He stressed the fact that the charity helps people of all ages, individuals and their families. Lord Black of Brentwood, Executive Director of the Telegraph Media Group, kindly accepted The Printing Charity’s invitation to serve a second term as its President. Lord Black said: “It’s a privilege to be involved with The Printing Charity. However complex the problems in our industry are, however bitter our disputes are, the one thing that unites us all is the responsibility to help the less fortunate. The Printing Charity aims to help 2,000 people by 2017 and to achieve that, we’re asking everyone in the industry to help us reach those people.” At the event, MC (Bill) Offer was also made a President Emeritus of The

Printing Charity for his exceptional work on the charity’s behalf as a Trustee for 15 years and three terms as its Chairman. HP new solution for large-format print providers HP has announced upgrades, certifications and workflow solutions for its large-format sign and display portfolio, helping print service providers (PSPs) grow their businesses and explore new markets. In recent years, many large format print shops have transformed their business models, offering new high value applications and seeking to avoid commoditisation. This transformation has been driven by technology advances that help PSPs move beyond sign and display to a diverse range of applications. No matter the market, clients increasingly demand high-quality output with faster turnaround times, requiring PSPs to embrace the flexibility and versatility of digital to remain successful. “Large-format PSPs are working in a changing marketplace, challenging them to step outside of their application comfort zone to meet client demand,” said Xavier Garcia, vice president and general manager, LargeFormat Sign and Display Division, HP. “HP is introducing a variety of new offerings to help our customers meet production demands, while also empowering them to confidently move into high-value markets, such as retail, interior décor and fleet graphics.” Helping PSPs create high value retail and corrugated applications to help boost their bottom line, the HP FB225 Scitex Varnish Ink is the latest ink option introduced for the HP Scitex FB7500/7600 Enhanced Color Pack The new ink allows HP Scitex FB7500/FB7600 Industrial Press owners to add spot or full varnish, create embossed text and images, as well as expand the colour gamut. Additionally, the integrated varnish ink helps protect against rubbing, scratches and water damage while creating cost and workflow efficiencies. The HP FB225 Varnish Scitex Ink is expected to be available worldwide on 1st November Helping PSPs capture a share of the growing custom wall décor market, the HP WallArt Solution now includes a feature to create canvas projects. This easy to use, cloud-based web service provides print ready files and step by step installation instructions, allowing PSPs to design themselves or work with customers through the cloud to produce customised interior décor applications, including mounted canvas prints and wallcoverings. The 3M™ MCS™ Warranty is now available for HP Latex 881 Inks and the HP Latex 3000 Printer when using approved 3M films. Combining the quality and flexibility of HP Latex Inks with the 3M MCS Warranty, which covers fading, cracking and peeling, the new offering helps PSPs secure business with discerning vehicle and fleet graphics customers without paying a premium for specialty inks. Additionally, HP is introducing two new canvas substrates, HP Premium

Satin Canvas and HP Everyday Satin Canvas, producing vivid colours, sharp details and broadening the colour gamut. Ideal for interior décor and fine art applications, both canvas substrates are easy to handle for fast post-production finishing. For retail signage and backlit displays, the new heavyweight HP Backlit Polyester Film achieves vibrant colours and denser blacks with better scratch resistance, as well as improved durability than previous backlit solutions. Designed for HP Latex printers, these expanded media options are now available worldwide through licensing partner Brand Management Group. Increasing production efficiencies, the HP SmartStream Production Analyzer 2.0 for HP Scitex Industrial Presses includes improvements to the job dashboard and job summary report, as well as the ability to set productivity targets. With a more detailed dashboard interface, operators can record notes, giving production managers a complete picture of job production. Additionally, the job report summary groups all related projects together to be viewed and exported to management information systems software for further analysis. Compatible with HP Latex and Scitex printers and presses, the HP Scitex Caldera GrandRIP+ Software solution now includes EasyMedia Module, Caldera’s integrated International Color Consortium (ICC) profile builder based on Xrite i1Prism V2 technology. Caldera EasyMEDIA allows users to create ICC profiles, creating a smoother workflow with enhanced colour consistency across output. Adverset moves into commerical digital TO give its customers an even wider range of product and cost options as well as the potential for personalisation, Adverset Media Solutions in Scarborough is making its debut in digital printing with a Linoprint C 751. The company offers a branding, design and total production service and is already well equipped with Speedmaster technology for commercial offset jobs and wide format machines for point of sale, banners, pop up stands, display panels, window graphics and personalised wallpaper. The wide format operation has grown substantially due to new sales generated from a successful stand-alone ecommerce website. This factor, coupled with the need to manage the finishing of extra-large product size configurations, has influenced the decision to expand the facility into a part of the premises which was previously leased out. In turn, that will release an ideal expandable working space for the new digital press and the scope to add a second machine and more dedicated finishing in future. The new Linoprint C 751 will be delivered by Heidelberg and at the same time Morgana is supplying a Digifold Pro creaser/folder and a Matrix 74 laminator. “This move into digital will enable us to handle shorter run work more competitively. We are seeing people batch longer run work into shorter quantities,” says John Easby, managing director. “We can then look and see which technology (litho or digital) is the most cost effective and relevant for each particular job and it will also open up new opportunities for personalisation, variable data and for printing on nonpaper substrates. We believe this will take us into new sectors.” Heidelberg and Xerox were the two short-listed suppliers. Adverset preferred the more robust build of the Linoprint C 751 in addition to the superior quality output (especially on fine tint work). Another factor was the machine’s ability, with a 630mm sheet length, to produce a 6pp A4 related product. The company’s experience with Heidelberg equipment over many years has been very consistent and the investment offers the flexibility of a potential

consumables deal in future should the company wish to add to its inline digital finishing portfolio. “It is well documented that digital inks are more prone to cracking and affecting finishing issues than litho inks, so having a product like the Digifold Pro on-board that will crease as well as fold is almost a pre-requisite,” says John Easby, managing director. Initially offset operators will kick-start the operation by running the Linoprint C751, bringing their knowledge of print and colour quality to this new technology. Once confidence in the set up and the output quality is established, a dedicated digital printer will be recruited, which should coincide with increased volume through a ‘customer awareness strategy’. The Linoprint C 751 will operate a flexible day shift while the litho operation runs on double days. For more information contact John Easby, Adverset, 01723-363732.

Manchester Met Uni adds Morgana DigiBook 150 IT Print Services at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) has purchased and installed a DigiBook 150 PUR perfect binding machine from Morgana Systems Ltd. The DigiBook 150 is an entry level PUR perfect binding machine designed with digital print in mind. It is capable of approximately 150 cycles per hour. It can bind publications with spine thicknesses from 2mm through to 50mm, in book sizes up to 380 x 320mm. Commenting on the purchase decision, Paul Squires, IT Print Services Manager at MMU, said: “The DigiBook 150 is ideal for our busy University print service as the PUR technology produces the strength of bind that our staff and students need. It is also able to cope with a range of different substrates without weakening. Our most demanding task is binding students’ end of course books: these contain their project work, and will be reviewed by examiners and opened numerous times by both students and teachers. We found that hot-melt binding was not really meeting our high standards of production nor meeting our customers’ expectations. Our students have high expectations and we believe we have the skills and equipment to meet those challenges. They have every right to expect the course books that they assemble of their work to be produced with the best equipment, reflecting this investment.” MMU IT Print Services needs to meet these challenges with high standards and a focus to meet high expectations with the production demands for high volume and MFP print of more than 43 million pages per year. The service supports some 34,000 students and over 3,000 teaching and support staff. The MMU IT Print Service handles a wide range of work, as is typical of a University print

Commenting on the installation at MMU, Ray Hillhouse, Sales and Marketing Director of Morgana Systems, said: “This is the ideal unit for a University print unit that is handling such a wide range of work. There really is nothing else on the market with the type of glue system to compete with the DigiBook 150 product. The unit offers few fancy settings, but for the run lengths needed by a large percentage of digital printers these are simply not necessary. Where even more productive solutions are required, we have the DigiBook 300 and 450.” section. “Much of our work is focused on quality not quantity,” adds Paul Squires. “The Morgana DigiBook 150 helps us to maintain the quality aspect perfectly for our bound books, whether the run is a one-off or needs 2,000 copies.” The DigiBook 150 is the entry-level product of the Morgana PUR range. A key feature of the 150, and across the DigiBook range, is the patented glue application system. Spine and side glue is applied using an adjustable slot applicator allowing accurate control over both functions to give the best possible results. All the machines have an hermetically sealed glue and cleaning system which gives the quickest possible start-up and shutdown of the system with minimal glue wastage. PUR is the strongest, most flexible binding adhesive available, offering several additional advantages over other hot-melt adhesives. When inks, coatings or digital print toners are present in the spine area these can often compromise the strength of a typical hot-melt perfect binding. PUR is resistant to this and will form a super-strong bond with all weights and finishes of paper stocks. In addition PUR works well with synthetic and recycled-content stocks.

PUR RANGE The DigiBook range of machines are suited to both traditional and digital printers who require either short-run or production capacity PUR perfect bound books to a professional standard. The innovative DigiBook range of machines are equipped with a patented closed gluing system, where the spine and side gluing is applied by a slot applicator for the utmost binding quality and accuracy. DigiBook machines are innovative bookbinding products designed and built for the very latest market requirements. They are easy to use, even by non-specialised personnel, via a touch screen panel with icon graphics, suitable for the programming of all precision operations in just a few seconds. These include both start-up and shutdown and use a new, innovative system which is covered by a number of international patents. The applicator is direct, and is hermetically sealed, without odour or toxic fume emissions, meaning that no extractor fan is required. This solution allows for the use of polyurethane glue in cartridges of up to 3kg, all adding up to simple and waste-free binding. www.morgana.co.uk

New Develop high-performance colour multifunctionals

DSALES, the UK distributor for the Develop range of copier-printers, has launched the Develop ineo+ 654e/754e multifunctional systems designed to improve productivity throughput in demanding environments such as centralised print departments and also for the pay-for-print commercial sector. The systems deliver top-quality output of up to 60 A4 ppm in colour and 65 or 75 A4 ppm in black and white and feature a new user interface for intuitive operation. The smartphone, tablet like multi-touch operator display panel features pinch-in/ pinch-out functionality allowing users to zoom into documents to check content. Another feature enhancement is drag-and-drop so documents stored on the ineo+ 654e/754e hard drive can be easily moved to the required function for printing or sending to e-mail; FTP or SMP destinations; and even changing the page order or rotating individual pages (if they are the wrong way round) in a scanned document. Document productivity is also improved by customisation of the operating panel of the ineo+ 654e/754e allowing users to activate certain functions and hide unwanted ones. The most frequently used functions of the ineo+ 654e/754e can be easily arranged on the main panel for instant access. This provides easy management of installed applications or preset workflows. Because pop-up windows open for all function settings, the main panel always remains accessible. This advanced interface design means users no longer need worry about getting lost in a maze of many different functionrelated screens. The new ineo+ 654e/754e are adapted to developments in corporate

IT environments. For example, documents can be scanned to or printed from external sources such as Sharepoint, Google Apps and Evernote as appropriate connectors can be integrated. It is possible to scan originals to create searchable PDF, docx, pptx and xlsx documents, directly print e-mail attachments and receive incoming faxes as searchable PDF files – a step that would normally have to be carried out at the desktop PC after the document has been scanned. The two new systems can also be integrated into any Cortado ThinPrint environment. The ineo+ 654e/754e have been specifically designed to minimise power consumption and their typical weekly electricity consumption (TEC value) is very low. The issue of print media inefficiency has also been tackled through functions that automatically delete blank pages to avoid unnecessary printing or copying and thus wasting both toner and paper. A wide range of media can be used including paper formats from A6 to SRA3 or user-defined formats and banners of up to 1.2 metres in length. The numerous finishing options include booklets of up to 80 pages, letters folded in various ways, handouts stapled and invoices hole-punched. For DSales (UK) Jonathan Whitworth, Managing Director commented, “These two new high-volume colour systems provide improved document throughput because the intuitive ease of use, coupled with new IT options, simplifies workflow productivity. They are an excellent solution for demanding corporate print environments or for copy shop applications and we anticipate strong sales through our dealer channel.” www.dsales.eu

Mimaki Tx500-1800B delivers volume textile printing MIMAKI has announced a new addition to its family of digital textile inkjet printers. The Tx500-1800B delivers high speed, high quality digital printing on a wide range of textiles, including cotton, silk, hemp and rayon. The new printer joins highly successful machines such as the TS500-1800 and TS341800A to round out the company’s broad textile printing portfolio. “We continue to improve and expand our textile printing capabilities based on customer feedback,” said Mike Horsten, General Manager Marketing EMEA for Mimaki Europe. “With the Tx500-1800B, we have again raised the bar in terms of the cost, quality and flexibility metrics for high quality small lot printing of textiles, even when using stretchy fabrics.” Key features that differentiate the Mimaki Tx500-1800B include a specially designed conveyor belt that feeds fabric without tension, enabling high quality printing on elastic materials, even with unattended operation. Print speeds are 1.6 times greater than conventional Mimaki textile printing products at 60 square metres per hour and 600x450 dpi. Various ink types that support a wide range of materials to meet the diverse needs of the textile and apparel industries are available for the Mimaki Tx500-1800B. This includes reactive dye ink (Rc300), sublimation dye ink (Sb300), acid dye ink and pigment ink. Acid dye and pigment inks will be available in the near future and all the ink is available in 2-litre ink bottles for reduced ink costs. The combination of speed and print quality is key to the Tx500-1800B and a variable dot function that delivers rich gradation without banding and accurate printing of fine lines gives added value in the final product for fashion design. The new printer includes a number of features to aid ease of use in a production environment and an automatic process for cleaning and drying

the conveyor belt between or during projects ensures that media is protected from staining or dampness. “We believe that the Tx500-1800B will speed up the gradually growing transition to digital printing in the worlds of textiles and apparel,” Horsten adds. “Fashion designers and others in the industry will be able to produce vibrant small lot products on unique materials that were not readily available for digital printing in the past. This includes cotton, silk, hemp and rayon, all popular fabrics in the world of fashion design. Our dedication to eco-friendly printing is also demonstrated with this new textile printer, which uses less ink and water and results in less waste than other printing methods.” National sales manager for Mimaki’s exclusive distributor, Hybrid Services Ltd, John de la Roche sees the new printer fitting into the UK’s and Ireland’s growing manufacturing industry well. “We’re seeing substantial growth in the sportswear and fashion sectors,” he says. “Local manufacturing shortens the time to market and shipping costs are greatly reduced. Retailers are demanding this sort of service, so the new Mimaki production textile machine delivers a solution to enable such a process.” Full details of Mimaki’s complete product range can be found by visiting www.hybridservices.co.uk

New Roland VersaCAMM VS-i Print & Cut ROLAND DG has introduced the new VersaCAMM VS-i wide format print and cut series, including the 64-inch (1,625mm) VS640i, the 54-inch (1,371mm) VS-540i, and the 30-inch (762mm) VS-300i. “The VersaCAMM is recognised throughout the industry as the pioneer of print and cut technology and the new VS-i series continues to build the innovation that has made it a best selling printer in the durable graphics market,” says Rob Goleniowski, Business Manager – Sign and Graphics, Roland DG UK. “The new VS-i series combines the reliability and ease of use for which these machines are internationally renowned, with a host of powerful new features and usability enhancements. There is no doubt the new VS-i is one of the most versatile and affordable solutions on the market today and will remain the industry’s favourite printer/cutter for durable graphics.” The VS-i series incorporates Roland’s new high definition ECO-SOL MAX2 ink, available in nine colours including CMYKLcLm, white, metallic silver and light black. The new light black delivers accurate reproduction of greys and skin tones for flawless photographic reproductions and seamless gradients. The latest generation white and metallic inks offer higher density than ever before, plus approximately one and a half times faster production speed for white ink and up to twice the speed for metallic ink compared to the

previous model. All this enables the VS-i series to produce a versatile range of profitable applications including durable outdoor and indoor banners, signs, POP, print and cut labels, stickers, heat transfers for garment decoration, transparent window graphics, striking vehicle wraps and high quality fine art prints. In addition, the new VS-i series has a range of additional enhancements including front loading ink cartridges for easy user access, and the ability to adjust cut settings during operation to improve accuracy and flexibility on long or complex jobs and achieve flawless cutting results. The integrated contour cutting on the VS-i series can produce graphics of any shape in one seamless workflow. Backed by a comprehensive one year RolandCare Silver warranty, a free Digital Print course at the Roland Academy and the inspirational samples in the Roland DG Creative Centre, the VS-i is a complete print solution. TWO Sides commissioned a survey of 1000 UK consumers following The Bank of England’s proposal to replace paper bank notes with polymer. For the past three years the Bank of England has been conducting a research project looking at the materials on which banknotes are printed. In particular, the Bank has reviewed the relative merits of printing banknotes on polymer rather than the cotton paper as at present. Shortly after The Bank of England press release was distributed, Two Sides commissioned a quick survey, conducted by independent research company Toluna, surveying 1000 UK consumers on their attitude towards the proposed switch from paper bank notes to polymer bank notes. Traditional paper banknotes have a unique look and feel about them and paper currency is still preferred by the vast majority of nations. Two Sides does not stand in the way of progress and are glad that, before a definite move to plastic notes, the British public is being given a chance to give its opinion. They thought they would find out for themselves what the British public thinks about the proposed change. The following question was asked: ‘The Bank of England is proposing to replace paper banknotes with plastic banknotes. Do you support this change?’ Results of the Survey included these key conclusions: Consumers are overall supportive of the change but women are less willing to change with 51% saying no or being undecided; Younger age group, 18-34, less willing to change with 58% saying no or being undecided. The survey raises interesting questions which Two Sides recommends are considered during the Bank of England’s period of public consultation 1. Does the apparent reduced support for younger generations for the change indicate an increased awareness of the sustainability of paper and concerns over the use of plastic or synthetic materials?; 2. Do practical arguments outweigh environmental considerations for an older generation?; 3. Are woman more conservative to change or, for some reason, do they have an affinity for paper, a natural and renewable material, over plastic or synthetic materials? There appears to be a significant willingness to accept the change from older age groups. A higher percentage of younger ages are undecided. 58% of 18-34 year olds either do not support the change to polymer or are undecided. Out of the 55+ age range, 69% of respondents support the change, 16% do not and 16% do not have a preference. www.twosides.info

New Year’s Resolutions WHAT ARE YOU PLANNING FOR 2014?

MORE of the same, well let’s hope not. Apart from those few that have grown through recession, the majority of us have found it quite a slog. Never mentioning the R word and keeping up beat when all around was gloom and doom. Wakey Wakey! The upturn has finally turned up. So carry on marketing, like we have been, but this time it won’t land on stoney ground. Now is the time to get caught marketing, full on, blatant promotion of everything great in print. We need to lead by example and use all of our marketing weaponry and give it large. Yes posters, flyers, pop-ups, signage, leaflets, postcard mailshots. You name it, we should all now be doing it to best show off what others need to be doing to fuel the recovery. Print will once again set best practice in promoting to new and existing business. After each downturn comes a rapid growth of new businesses, be ready with your business card offers, attract them and nurture them. All business starts with an introduction and the 6600+ QPP frontline print businesses are in the right place to offer the very best advice in print. From little business cards, brochures and posters grow. A blossoming business needs more print and with promotion comes more growth. As for our wonderful eight million plus customer base, who using great management have traded through the last few years they will now reap the rewards as business increases. They too will need all your existing and new print products to promote to their existing and potential customers. Existing businesses will need to keep ahead of new competitors and we will be supplying both parties. It is our time to reap some benefits, but you have got to sow the seeds first.

Duplo New Lay-Flat Book Technology Partnership

DUPLO UK has announced it has entered into an exclusive agreement with Photobook Technology (PBT) to distribute its range of “Mita” hardcover book production solutions in the UK. The Mitafold is an automatic folding and creasing machine for photo book sections. The Mitamax is a gluing machine, which glues half-folded sheets together to build perfectly square and lay-flat book blocks. The Mitabook is a fully automatic, hardcover casing-in machine designed to economically produce short-run, hard cover books. The Mitacase is an automatic hard cover making machine. All systems are easy to operate, require little floor space and fill the gap between semi-automatic hard cover systems and higher production equipment. “The Mita range is a great fit to our product line and we are very excited to be able to offer a full line of products for hard cover applications, in particular lay-flat books,” says Peter Jolly, Managing Director of Duplo UK. “Our research shows us that there is a growing demand for higher quality hard-cover books required in relatively low volumes and we believe these products are the right fit for the market and fit with our ethos of Automated Precision. It will enable our customer-base to diversify their product offering, up-sell to existing clients and profit from specialised finishing.” “We are delighted to welcome such a large name as Duplo UK to the PBT family. They are relevant to so many print organisations, and have a great track record in developing third party distributorships. We are very excited” says Kurt Richter from PBT. Duplo UK showed the lay-flat book technology for the first time at their London Calling 5i event at Somerset House in November, providing visitors with an opportunity to see live demonstrations of the MitaMax product, as well as gaining a deeper insight into the rest of the new product line. www.duplouk.com

will be served by DTG Solutions, a company with a successful record in this sector.” The SureColor SC-F2000 printer is a complete design and textile printing solution. It uses Epson UltraChrome DG ink with white, a new garment ink formulated specifically for the new Epson PrecisionCore TFP printhead. As a result, the printer produces text and images with a wide colour gamut and smooth colour gradations. In its fastest print mode — dual CMYK – the SureColor SC-F2000 prints a t-shirt in just 27 seconds. The Epson SureColor SC-F2000 is available in two models: the Standard high-speed CMYK-only printer and the CMYK+White model which offers the added benefit of white ink for printing on dark or colour fabrics. The price is £14,795 (ex VAT) RRP for each model. www.dtgsolutions.co.uk

International Paper Elevates Jet-Set Paper Quality INTERNATIONAL Paper has announced the re-launch of two brands, JetSet and JetStar papers, specially developed for high speed inkjet printing. “The re-launch of these papers follows an investment we made earlier this year in our French Saillat mill to upgrade the quality of pigmentation”, says Gerald Demets, Commercial Director for Uncoated Freesheet at International Paper. “This upgrade significantly improves the final printing results of JetSet paper and enables us to meet the growing printability requirements of customers in this segment.” With high brightness, bulk and opacity, as well as high optical density and a wide colour gamut, JetSet paper delivers vivid colours for excellent image contrast when working with dye-based and pigmented inks. International Paper’s inkjet offering also includes JetStar surface treated paper designed for use with pigmented inks. JetStar quality allows colour stability, enhanced print performance and better fade and water resistance; it offers visibly better results over standard offset paper. JetStar paper is also available with ColorPRO technology. Both papers have proven records in the field of variable data printing. They offer superior performance in a wide range of applications, such as direct mail, financial printing, reports, catalogues and brochures. JetSet and JetStar papers have been tested and used with all leading high speed inkjet printing systems, including Kodak, Océ, Screen, HP and Impika. Both products are Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) and Ecolabel certified while the producing mill, the Saillat mill in France, is one of the world’s best-performing sites in terms of CO2 emissions, with an average wood procurement distance of 128km. 20 | SHOWTIME | QUICK PRINT PRO | December 2013-January 2014

Printwear & Promotion LIVE 2014 Printwear & Promotion LIVE 2014 takes place in Hall 12, NEC, Birmingham, from February 23rd to 25th 2014.

W

ITH JUST UNDER four months to go, P&P LIVE is looking like being a sell out. At the time of going to press, under 300 square metres of stand space remains on the floor plan that has already been extended by 600 square metres. Following the unprecedented success of this year’s show, exhibitor stands will top 130 for 2014 and the event will be more than worthy of next year’s 25th year anniversary!

NEW EQUIPMENT AND KIT Without providing too many details at this stage and spoiling the fanfare to come in the February issue, a number of the 50+ suppliers of decorating equipment and accessories committed to the show are either showing new kit or planning product launches at the show. It all means there will again be so much more to see at the 2014 show! As a taster, stands have recently been booked by RA Smart and I-Sub – both distributors of Epson’s new SureColor SC-F Series dye sublimation printers, among others.

CORPORATE WEAR Further to the announcement back in the September issue regarding the increasing focus on corporate wear at next year’s show, with the addition of Brook Taverner, Europe’s largest stock supplier of corporate image clothing, we have a superb selection of business/corporate wear suppliers at the 2014 show including Russell, Skopes, Henbury, N.M.Williams (Disley), Balmoral Knitwear, Rowlinson Knitwear, Premier Clothing and William Turner.

WORKWEAR Meanwhile, further additions to a strong workwear line-up at the 2014 show will give plenty for visitors to explore in this growing sector. 2014 exhibitors include: Dickies, Alexandra Workwear, Benchmark Trousers, Regatta Hardwear, Result Clothing, Denny’s and Premier Clothing.

20 PLUS NEW AND RETURNING EXHIBITORS A number of corporate wear and workwear exhibitors form part of the already 20-strong contingent of 20 new exhibitors confirmed for 2014. In addition to these there are further surprises in store with a more than strong rumour that ‘Onesies’ will be a on display in a glorious range of colours at next year’s show, plus new to the UK and P&P LIVE will be clothing brands from Germany, Spain and Italy. And for those who haven’t heard, outdoor brand Trespass will be at

the show in force to add to the usual strength in this sector provided by Result and Regatta. One day at the show may not be enough! Add into the above mix the presence of new lines and hospitality offered by a number of the major leisurewear brands and clothing distributors including Fruit of the Loom, Gildan, AWDis, American Apparel, Continental Clothing, Ralawise, BTC Activewear, PenCarrie and Prestige Leisure, plus a new seminar programme, more live product demonstrations – including an extended Bag Decoration Demo/Advice stand – a day at the show may not be enough for many visitors! Online registration for P&P LIVE 2014 will be available towards the end of November at www.printwearandpromotion.co.uk/visitor

SIGN & DIGITAL UK: A PROVEN FORMULA FOR BUSINESS SUCCESS

SIGN & Digital UK, the annual UK show for the Sign Making, Display Solutions and Digital Printing industries, has been serving the industry for over 25 years. Major wide format print and finishing manufacturers are widely represented alongside the leading sign making suppliers. The show has a well-earned reputation as the show to research, discover and purchase your next wide format print or finishing solution. Sign & Digital UK is a business event in the true sense where visitors can find real opportunities and the best advice to grow their businesses. There will be over 150 suppliers at the event, showing a wide range of products and services for this dynamic market sector. Rudi Blackett, Event Director comments: ‘’We have seen a significant increase in commercial printing companies visiting the show in recent times to fully understand the benefits of adding wide format digital printing to their businesses. Commercial printers are perfectly placed to take advantage of the opportunity that wide format offers, as they understand print and can easily add this service to their existing businesses to gain impressive returns. Entry into wide format print can be surprisingly cost effective and suppliers at the show are geared up to guide you through the process of adding Wide Format printing to your business, as well as advice on how to get up and running, understand the impressive array of applications, and sell the benefits.’’ The main wide format print and finishing manufacturers including Roland DG, Hybrid

Services/Mimaki, Epson, Hewlett-Packard, Agfa Graphics, Mutoh, Esko and many more will be showcasing their latest products at Sign & Digital UK 2014 Sign & Digital UK showcases the latest technological advances in the industry. It is essential to visit so you know what is current and what technology you need to have to be competitive in the near future. Put the dates in your diary now: 29th April to 1st May, 2014, Hall 2, at the NEC, Birmingham The show website has all the information on who is exhibiting, as well as the latest product launches and show features. www.signanddigitaluk.com

SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST – CHANGE IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS Comment by Trevor Crawford, Event Director of Ipex 2014; “The world is changing, and the key to survival is to change with it. The printing industry is no exception to this, having undergone seismic change over the past decade or so, which continues to present challenges to printers. From the research we have undertaken and the discussions I’ve had with industry representatives, the issues facing almost every printer, large or small, are generally the same around the world. These are well documented; declining volumes, overcapacity, commoditisation, pricing pressures, finance, as well as the ongoing competition and integration from the internet and other competitive communications channels.”

IPEX 2014 – TO EDUCATE AND INSPIRE CHANGE If print businesses can recognise the growth areas, and have a strength and leadership to move forward, there is definitely the potential for growth. Ipex 2014, which itself has had to adapt to the new industry, is therefore well placed to inspire and educate printers for the future. Not only as a showcase of the latest product enhancements and technology innovations, but also through a programme of seminars, workshops and master classes designed specifically to address current issues and equip printers with the tools needed to respond positively to the changing marketplace and ensure a long term, profitable future. For more information on Ipex 2014, which takes place from 24-29th March at the ExCeL London, UK, visit www.ipex.org.

22 | DIGITAL IMAGING | QUICK PRINT PRO | December 2013-January 2014

Another dimension in printing I mentioned 3D printing in last month’s column, in fact I first mentioned it three years ago when early models began to appear. This year the general media discovered it with all of the sensational over reaction you might expect of the popular press. Martin Christie writes from all angles…

I

T WOULD BE the end of manufacturing as we know it, as everyone would now be able to produce everything from a lampshade to a family car in their own back bedroom. Half scale replicas of the Taj Mahal would be appearing in suburban back gardens! But like most predictions of the potential of technology, such as intelligent machines that would do all the work for us and leave us with increasing leisure time, the projections are a little fanciful. However once the novelty and the hype has subsided, the machines themselves will prove a very useful and versatile addition to digital production. Where it slots into the print on demand station remains to be seen, but it is already proving a valuable tool in several areas, and no doubt many more will appear as people get their heads round the concept and explore alternatives. The important thing to grasp is that printing three dimensional objects is not rocket science. This is not a replicator from starship enterprise. Put simply, a 3D printer is an intelligent glue gun. A conventional inkjet printer sprays on command layers of colour to form a pattern or picture on flat paper that moves through the machine as the print head also passes over it. Essentially the 3D printer — there are several different types — performs a similar trick using not ink, but minute plastic beads to form a solid bonded object. Plastic has been the most common material so far, being the easiest to work with and form, but some are now working with lightweight metals, and even with food substances. Imagine a wedding cake that doesn’t have the bride and groom on top, but actually is the bride and groom and you begin to get the picture. The only limitation of this technology is going to be the imagination of the designer and manufacturer, as well as the practical size of the device and the object created. But in Holland they are already working on a 3D printer that will pre-fabricate buildings and which will need to be transported in a container truck. Mind it will take several months to stick all the bits together, so we are a long way from print while you wait! On a smaller and more practical scale, the possibility of producing individual

items to custom specifications is already in use in developing prototype parts, a process that would previously have involved costly and time-consuming tooling and testing. In the aerospace industry this is already bringing the lead time in some modifications from months to a matter of days. Designs can be tried, tested and modified rapidly. One brilliant application that will literally change some people’s lives is the manufacture of personalised prosthetic limbs, particularly a problem for children who are likely to grow out of them as quickly as shoes. They are currently extremely expensive, especially if they need regular replacement. This will not be the end of manufacturing as we know it. Anything that requires high volume and high tolerances, like a new piston for a car engine, will need accurate tooling and precision engineering. But a non-critical part, like a bulb holder, which might be ridiculously expensive as original equipment from your local dealer, becomes a possibility for a cheap copy. This raises issues of copyright of product which we are already familiar with over normal print, so nothing new there, but 3D printing is not going to compete with an automated production line, and economies of scale. Where it will fit into the world of print and production is a whole new adventure, but I am highlighting it because next year, 2014, a number of patents on existing 3D printers expire, so there is likely to be a major expansion of machines and options available, and there is bound to be something just perfect for the forward looking print shop. The suggestion that everyone will have their own 3D printer at home and be knocking out items for around the house, is way off the mark until the capture and design process is made convenient enough to be done on a mobile phone. Until then scanning or creating three dimensional digital files in Photoshop, Illustrator, or any other software package will be the preserve of the specialist. And even then, taking concept to actual print promises to be an interesting learning curve. Watch this space.

THE SCANNER — PART 2 3D printing may be one direction for the future, but conventional scanning in high resolution will continue to be in demand. Hard copy originals have been around for hundreds of years, and will continue to be produced

December 2013-January 2014 | QUICK PRINT PRO | DIGITAL IMAGING | 23

regardless of how much information and how many images are transferred entirely electronically. We are familiar with the often under-used scanners on top of most, but not all, digital printers, and they do a pretty good job given the speed they work at to produce colour accuracy. One of the limitations is the software installed to store the information initially captured. Most of the quality is instantly discarded to be saved as a compressed, and therefore reduced quality file, regardless of dpi settings chosen. Beyond A3, flatbed scanners are rare beasts more often found in museums and other places where valuable artwork needs to be archived. They are big, heavy and take up a lot of desk space. A more convenient solution is the slim roll-fed scanner, lightweight enough to be installed above a large format printer, or just moved around on wheels for convenience in the studio. We had a chance to spend some time with the Contex 42 inch scan station, and were very impressed with the results on a wide variety of jobs. The Danish manufacturer’s products are always robustly made and well thought out for working use, and mated with excellent soft wear, make an impressive package. Many copy shops will have a black and white plan printer with colour capable scanning. But a dedicated colour scanner is a much better option if you need to produce really top quality results. Even plan printing itself is no longer simple black and white lines. Often vital colout information, images or other fine details need to be captured, and as important originals also have a high value, a premium scanning service is an important and profitable part of the bureau. A 42 inch scanner enables you to scan originals of over a metre wide, and even if you are not able to print colour copies at that size, they can be saved, stored, downsized or printed in sections. Good quality digital capture is the key, then anything is possible for output. The important equation is a scanner that can cope with a decent variety of originals, and can be operated by any member of the studio staff with reasonable care, and a little attention to detail. The principle is simple. Several sets of rollers move the original over a light panel served by multiple lens. Well that’s true of most roll fed scanners. What makes the Contex series special is the 48bit CCd technology, a unique natural light source, and camera quality optics using Fujifilm lenses. It is therefore able to offer true wide gamut Adobe RGB, allowing the differences in very bright and saturated colours to be identified in the scan. This is a vital aid in accurate colour scanning, if the original is colour critical. Trying to correct colour inaccuracies afterwards from a poor scan is a

thankless and often hopeless task. Rubbish in, rubbish out as they say. Combined with the scanner’s capabilities is a comprehensive software package — Next Image. I have been using a previous version of this for some years with our own Copymate, and found it producing brilliant results. The latest version has a number of refinements, particularly the option of fine tuning the scan preview before saving. It’s almost like having a pre-Photoshop, so you can fix not only levels, white balance, sharpening etc, but also thresholds so that you can adjust in advance with images that are particular dense or alternatively highly reflective. It’s not a matter of just adjusting lightness or darkness. The software is as important as the scanner in real terms, and the update version has a number of new filters including a smart smoother that intelligently removes noise without blurring the originals, plus the opposing sharpening algorithm for really sharp edges. Any scan is the result of turning the original hard copy into individual pixels which have a definite resolution and clarity, and while the quality of the original determines the ultimate result, the performance of scanner and software combined makes an enormous difference. Obviously files scanned can be saved in any standard format at resolutions up to 9600 should you want to go that big! For convenience and speed of workflow, auto sizing of originals, batch naming and sequencing, are all part of the package, and Next Image can now also be operated by a touch screen control option. A monitor mounted on a folding bracket above the scanner makes it easy to utilise the software while handling the original scans. Original handling is of course a vital part of the operation, as most roll-fed scanners can be brutal and unforgiving with delicate pieces. By their very construction, they can only accept a limited depth of item through their jaws, and may misfeed or jam transporting slippery or uneven surfaces. Obviously dangerous goods like old maps stuck together with sellotape are one thing, but you also need to beware the tensile strength of plans that have become distressed and weakened through damp and decay. Too violent a transport can soon trash valuable originals. Contex allow for this with speed and sensitivity settings that can control the aggression often associated with roll scanners. The top roller rack can also be raised to accept board up to 15mm thick. It is adjusted electronically so it can move gently up and down to cradle the original without crushing it. Over the test period I was able to feed a wide variety of bits and bobs through the scan station — all part of the many varied products of our colourful customer base here in Brighton. Artists, photographers, librarians, architects and landscape gardeners all grace the shop counter, not to mention the odd local who has found something interesting in the attic. The key to a successful scanning service is that it actually generates at least four times more profitable work than the scans themselves, potentially a lot more. Once the files are digital, there will almost certainly be hard print output of one form or another, even if it’s only a nice watercolour of the pier committed to a Christmas card. That’s how a good scanner covers its cost as otherwise the overheads are minimal. Word also gets round very quickly if you offer an exceptional service. Is this the most sustainable book of its kind?

ARJOWIGGINS Graphic and Pureprint Group, the award winning print and marketing solutions provider, have joined forces to print renowned sustainability author Jonathon Porritt’s new book The World We Made; Alex McKay’s Story from 2050. The first edition of the book is written from the future in 2050, looking back to today. It tells the optimistic story of how humans, through a renewed sense of purpose, placed an imperative on sustainability to make a better world for all those who come after us. Commenting on the book, author Jonathon Porritt said: “Learning to live sustainably on this planet is not an optional extra: it’s a pressing imperative. And the stakes really couldn’t be higher. A brilliant, fairer and genuinely sustainable world is still available to all of us by 2050 – if we start making it happen right now. So it was particularly important for me to leave no sustainable stone uncovered when producing, creating and manufacturing this book. Working with Arjowiggins Graphic and Pureprint Group has made it possible to meet almost all of our ambitions in that regard.” The highly sought after book was printed on 100 percent recycled, FSCâ recycled certified paper leaving a carbon footprint of just 1.8kg CO2 emissions per book, compared to 4kg of CO2 emissions for an average book. The World We Made was printed on a combination of high quality 100

percent recycled papers - Cocoon Offset, Cocoon Silk, Cyclus Offset and Cyclus Print. By printing the book on these types of recycled papers the environmental impact was reduced by 17,120kg of landfill, 371,887 litres of water, 35,013kWh of electricity, 3,105kg of CO2 and greenhouse gases, and 27,817kg of wood, according to Arjowiggins Graphic’s free Environmental Benefit Statement (EBS), which shows savings made by using recycled papers compared to using virgin fibre papers. The World We Made was printed by Pureprint Group, the world’s first carbon neutral printer. For the printing process, the company used only inks that were made from vegetable based oils not mineral oils, and no isopropyl alcohol was applied to reduce ground level ozone. Angela De Vorchik, Operational Marketing Manager, Arjowiggins Graphic said: “It was important for the author of this book to reflect the highest sustainability standards. A simple way of incorporating sustainable practices into the fabric of the book was to choose recycled papers. The average CO2 emissions for a book is around 4kg of CO2, so we’re proud to have created a book that produces less than half than this amount.” “Not only does this reduce the company’s carbon emissions and divert waste paper from landfill, but it also provides a really simple way to communicate its commitment to the environment.” Richard Owers, Marketing Director, Pureprint Group commented: “Sustainability lies at the heart of our business so it was an honour to print The World We Made –which we find a dynamic and aspirational story with a view to encouraging people to think very differently about sustainability.” The World We Made, a book published by Phaidon Press, describes the key events, technological breakthroughs and lifestyle revolutions that will transform our planet over the next half century. Sustainable development guru Jonathon Porritt tells the story through the words of Alex McKay, a fifty year old teacher looking back from 2050, who explains how we got our world back from the brink of collapse. All royalties of the book will go to support the work of Forum for the Future, one of the world’s leading sustainable development charities which works globally with businesses and others to transform the systems critical to daily life, like food and energy. You can buy a copy of The World We Made at www.phaidon.com/ theworldwemade

Crystal clear message with new Cocoon campaign

ARJOWIGGINS Graphic has teamed up with Antalis to launch a new innovative campaign to showcase the unique quality of its Cocoon recycled paper. The campaign consisting of a mailer, game and dedicated website targets designers, businesses and printers in twenty three countries across Europe. The mailer features an image of a crystal that turns into a 3D diamond to reflect the cycle of Cocoon, which transforms recycled pulp into beautiful, clean white paper. Using Cocoon Silk 250gsm manufactured from 100% de-inked pulp this new mailer showcases the whiteness and finish that can be achieved from recycled waste paper. Cocoon is a range of 100% recycled FSC certified and 50% recycled FSC mix certified offset and coated papers with the qualities and appearance of virgin fibre papers but with far superior environmental credentials The campaign offers customers the chance to win one of many eco-friendly prizes, including two spa weekends, ten bicycles and three hundred bespoke boxes of fair trade chocolates. Prizes can be won by entering an online game, inspired by the ‘Four Images One Word’ puzzles, on the designated Cocoon website: www.white-and-recycled.co.uk

The game asks recipients to turn four images and a jumbled selection of letters into ten words, if they manage to find ten words they can then participate in the final draw to win one of the prizes. Both the mailer and envelope have also been printed sustainably on the new Komori Lithrone HUV G-40 press. This press uses less energy and reduces CO2 emissions during the printing process compared to a traditional four colour interdeck drying UV press. The print techniques used on the mailer are both innovative and environmentally friendly, as the mailer is printed using four colour offset with vegetable inks, laminated with ECOfilm (a gloss film lamination which is 100% biodegradable containing no toxic materials or heavy metals, which results in a virtually zero environmental footprint). The envelope has been printed with a HUV acrylic gloss varnish and a small addition of pantone tint. Angela DeVorchik, Operational Marketing Manager at Arjowiggins Graphic, comments: “Our range of Cocoon papers enable us to deliver the shade and finish businesses need for their printed communications, such as highend marketing brochures, mailers etc, whilst also conveying their green credentials. Marian Thomasson, Communications Manager at Antalis states “ Giving designers, businesses and printers a printed crystal shape enables them to visualise the journey Cocoon has made from waste to paper, just as crystals have developed from minerals and organic substances, and we hope these mailers will demonstrate to more people that recycled paper doesn’t have to compromise on whiteness or quality.” www.arjowigginsgraphic.com, www.antalis.co.uk

Caught in the act

GUILTY as charged, someone at Colourfast in Brighton is not only promoting a Data Copy take away paper supply service but showing off their new Plex Display Aqua Base swing sign at the same time. What is the print world coming to when our quick print service has to be complimented by promoting paper sales and signage products? When interviewed, these copy shop culprits did not want to be caught in the press so may have given false names, Simon and Garfunkel, apparently they were just trying to keep their customers satisfied. Swing by www.plexdisplay.com for all your customer pavement and signage requirements. For information about becoming a Data Copy stockist and joining the A4&more club email info@a4more.com or visit www.a4more.com Also check out their flyer in this month’s magazine, printed on the remarkable Xerox 570 which we don’t want to stop trialing, onto Data Copy 100 gsm plain paper, yes not special colour paper. The colour quality is brilliant and ideal for lots of your regular jobs, so stock some and see.

Aqua Base Swing on Trial THERE is something very tactile about a well engineered product and recording customer reaction is paramount to a proper QPP case study. QPP were invited to swing into some rather swish marketing and get noticed using our very own Aquabase Swing Sign. Firstly we were impressed with how easy the sign was to assemble, kids play, pack flat has never been so simple. The wheels on the base go round and round, I did say it was kids play, and easily manoeuvre the sign into position. Outside our shop the display is sturdy and certainly makes your message stand out. For extra stability just add water or sand although this will effect your driving home speed when bringing your sign in for the night. A guide is if it starts to swing so fast you think you could make electricity from it then it needs a bit of ballast. Best practice for getting your marketing in front of your oncoming pavement traffic is to turn it sideways to utilise both sides of the enormous 910mm x 640 mm graphic display areas. The sign hangs from stainless steel security brackets. Buy a demonstration model and sell the concept to your customers. After a couple of sales your advertising is for free. Don’t forget to update the posters as originality will make passers buy. Why not try something different? www.plexdisplay.com

Print Power

NOW using all this extra energy comes at a cost even when you use trade services so how can we save on power. Here is another way to affect the bottom line of your business. Increasing gross profit through new sales is fine but keep an eye on your overheads and try to buy better. I have already saved a few words on introducing David Cooper from www.FullPowerUtilities.com as he has kindly written the next bit for us all.

INSIDE STORY – HOW TO PLAY THE UTILITIES GAME

This article was written for Quick Print Pro by David Cooper, director of a UK-wide premier utilities brokerage. QPP readers may be interested to have a little insight into the commercial utility industry. As brokers we are frequently told that utility suppliers could do more to produce clear notice letters. Various things such as how the utility suppliers time their notice letters, the appearance of the letters (sometimes a bit like junk mail) plus each supplier has different timings from each other, can all mean that the customer can overlook the renewal letter. 22% of business customers overlook renewal notices and there are unpleasant financial consequences. Wrapped up in the renewal notice letter is the ‘Window of Termination’ during which the customer can give notice that they want the option to explore the market for competitive prices. Unfortunately, many months before the present contract ends, this window opens and closes. It is only about 30 days long anyway and each supplier times it differently in their own contracts. When you have a business to run this all gets complicated and confusing. The Notice of Termination must also be given by the customer or their broker to the supplier in a particular way. Once the Termination notice is given AND ACKNOWLEDGED by the supplier, the customer or broker has time and flexibility on their side to think about organising a new contract. However, here is the consequence to missing the Termination Window. The supplier will ‘auto-roll’ the customer from the current contract straight into a new 1 year contract. It’s perfectly legal, as the roll over facility is in the original contract the customer signed. The rates detailed in the renewal letter are the ‘auto-roll’ rates and they will be imposed if the customer does not terminate both correctly and within the window. Auto-roll unit rates are typically 30 – 100% more than normal rates and are completely avoidable. One further problem may come if the customer DOES correctly terminate but does NOT put a new contract in place. In this situation the current contract will stop at the end date, the current supplier will continue to supply, but only on OUT OF CONTRACT RATES (typically up to 30% higher than contracted rates). But why use a broker? When you have a business to run, all this can be expensive to get wrong. Getting these dates right is essential and can be aided by using a broker. The first function of a broker is logging these crucial dates for each meter’s contract. Full Power has direct access to our own account managers at every UK supplier and can get this information quickly and easily. We cannot stress strongly enough how important this first step is. Full Power will do this for you for no fee and give you a ‘heads up’ call one month before the window opens. We would simply like the opportunity to quote you when the time comes round. If you want help, find a Premier broker that doesn’t charge a fee and has whole market quoting, as part market may well miss out on the best prices. Most people think there are 8 or 9 commercial suppliers in the UK, but there are 24 and some very good niche offers come from among the smaller suppliers, some of which only work through brokers. Commercial prices change almost weekly, if not daily, so clients cannot possibly go to the whole market, produce a spread sheet of all the variations, make comparisons, select a contract and arrange the paperwork in time before prices change and you have to start all over again. Using a broker can help. The theory is that the broker should find you a deal cheaper than you would find yourself, will do all the work for you and monitor the contract dates later on too.

FOR QPP READERS Joey Kolirin is the Senior Broker at Full Power Utilities Ltd and personally deals with all QPP readers. FPU’s service is UK-wide and fee-free to customers, as the supplier pays FPU a flat commission, allowing FPU to be impartial. Their customers include BMW, Continental Tyres, Dominos Pizza and Costa Coffee to factories, warehouses, restaurants and of course printers and copy shops. NOT JUST FOR CHRISTMAS An old man goes to the Wizard to ask him if he can remove a curse he has been living with for the last 40 years. The Wizard says, ‘Maybe, but you will have to tell me the exact words that were used to put the curse on you.’ The old man says without hesitation, ‘I now pronounce you man and wife.’

CRACKER JOKES FOR THE WELL READ “All great battles are fought at the intersection of four maps.” The Duke of Wellington is supposed to have said this at Blenheim. “The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure, and the intelligent are full of doubt.” Bertrand Russell “Keep your old love letters. Throw away your old bank statements.” Mary Schmich “God gave us a penis and a brain, but only enough blood to run one at a time.” Robin Williams “When it’s a choice between two evils, I always pick the one I’ve never tried before.” Mae West “You’re never too old to become the person you might have been.” John Lennon “The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.” Thoreau “Men stumble over the truth from time to time, but most pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing happened.” Winston Churchill “I did not come across any of my discoveries through the process of rational thinking” Albert Einstein “A problem is a chance for you to do your best.” Duke Ellington “It is true hard work never killed anybody, but I figure, why take the chance?” Ronald Reagan “If all else fails, immortality can always be assured by spectacular error.” J.K. Galbraith

DESIGNER LOVE A graphics artworker was walking beside a pond when a frog jumped out and told him that she was really a beautiful princess and if he were to kiss her, she would make him VERY happy! He picked up the frog and put it into his pocket. A few minutes later, the frog poked her head out and said, “Didn’t you hear me?! I’m a beautiful princess and if you kiss me I will stay with you and do ANYTHING you want!” The guy took the frog out and said, “Look, I understand what you are saying, but I am a UK front line quick print designer and right now I don’t have time for a girlfriend… but a talking FROG is REALLY, REALLY COOL!”

THINGS TO DWELL ON INTO 2014 Why can’t women put on mascara with their mouth closed? Why doesn’t glue stick to the inside of the bottle? Why don’t you ever see the headline ‘Psychic Wins Lottery’? Why is it called lipstick if you can still move your lips? Why is it considered necessary to nail down the lid of a coffin? Why is it that doctors call what they do ‘practice’? Why is it that to stop Windows 98, you have to click on ‘Start’? Why is it that when you’re driving and looking for an address, you turn down the volume on the radio? Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavour, and dishwashing liquid made with real lemons? Why isn’t there a special name for the tops of your feet? Why isn’t there mouse-flavoured cat food? You know that little indestructible black box that is used on planes? Why can’t they make the whole plane out of the same substance?

I’VE STARTED SO I’LL…

No dictionary defines well the difference between “complete” and “finished”. IT’S NOT EASY However, and after some research, I BEING CHEESY think I have the answer… When you marry the right woman, My girlfriend is fed up of my constant you are “complete”. wordplay jokes. If you marry the wrong woman, I asked her; “What can I do to stop you are “finished”. my addiction?” If the right one catches you with She replied; “Whatever means the wrong one, you are “completely necessary.” “No it doesn’t,” I said. finished”.

CHRISTMAS SPIRIT Two drunks are walking along. One drunk says to the other, “What a beautiful night, look at the moon.” The other drunk stops and looks at his drunken friend, “You are wrong. That’s not the moon, that’s the sun.” Both started arguing for a while when they came upon another drunk walking, so they stopped him. “Sir, could you please help settle our argument? Tell us what that thing is up in the sky that’s shining. Is it the moon or the sun?” The third drunk looked at the sky and then looked at them and said, “Sorry, I don’t live around here.”

FELINE VS MAN I’ve never understood why women love cats. Cats are independent, they don’t listen, they don’t come in when you call, they like to stay out all night, and when they’re home they like to be left alone and sleep. In other words, every quality that women hate in a man, they love in a cat.

CUSTOMER SATISFACTION % A print shop owner said to a customer, ‘Thank you, Mr. Smith, for your patronage. I wish I had twenty customers like you.’ ‘Gosh, it’s nice to hear that, but I’m kind of surprised,’ admitted Smith. ‘You know that I argue every bill and always pay late.’ The printer said, ‘I’d still like twenty customers like you. The problem is, I have two hundred.’

TUNE IT IN A medical student was in the morgue one day after classes, getting a little practice in before the final exams. He went over to a table where a body was lying face down. He removed the sheet over the body and to his surprise he found a cork in the corpse’s rectum! Figuring this was fairly unusual, he pulled the cork out, and to his surprise, music began playing ‘On the road again... Just can’t wait to get on the road again...’ The student was amazed, and placed the cork back in the rectum. The music stopped. Totally freaked out, the student called the Medical Examiner over to the corpse. ‘Look at this. This is really something!’ the student told the examiner as he pulled the cork back out again. ‘On the road again... Just can’t wait to get on the road again...’ ‘So what?’, the Medical Examiner replied, obviously unimpressed with the student’s discovery. ‘But isn’t that the most amazing thing you’ve ever seen?’ asked the student. ‘Are you kidding?’ replied the Examiner, ‘Any asshole can sing country music!’

CARDS DOWN Four older ladies are sitting around playing bridge. The first lady says, “You know girls, I have known you all a long time and there is something I must get off my chest. I am a Kleptomaniac, But don’t worry, I have never stolen from you and I never will; we have been friends for too long.’” The second lady says, “Well, since we are having true confessions here, I must get something off my chest too. I am a Nymphomaniac but don’t worry, I have not hit on your husbands. They don’t interest me and never will; we have been friends for too long.” “Well,’” says the third lady, “I, too, must confess something. I am a Lesbian, but do not worry, I will not hit on you. You are not my type. We have been friends too long for me to ruin our friendship.”’ The fourth lady stands up, says, “I have a confession to make, also. I am an uncontrollable gossip and I have some phone calls to make.”

PERFECTION IN PRINT A man walked out to the street and caught a taxi just going by. He got into the taxi and the cabbie said, “Perfect timing. You’re just like Brian” “Who?” said the passenger “Brian Sullivan, he’s a guy who did everything right all the time. Like my coming along when you needed a cab, things happen like that to Brian every single time.” “But there’s always a few clouds for everybody” said the passenger. “Not Brian Sullivan. He was a terrific athlete. He could have won the Grand Slam at tennis. He could play golf with the pros. He sang like an opera baritone and danced like a Broadway star, and you should have heard him play the piano. He was an amazing guy.” “He sounds like he was something really special.” “There’s more. He had a memory like a computer. He remembered everybody’s birthday. He knew all about wine, which foods to order

“Excuse me, there’s a zebra crossing a bit further along the road.”

and which fork to eat them with. He could fix anything. Not like me. I change a fuse and the whole street blacks out. But Brian Sullivan, he could do everything right.” “He was some man then.” “He always knew the quickest way to go in traffic and avoid traffic jams” said the cabbie, “not like me, I always seem to get stuck in them. But Brian, he never made a mistake and he really knew how to treat a woman and make her feel good. He would never answer her back even if she was in the wrong; and his clothing was always immaculate, shoes polished too. He was the perfect man! He never made a mistake. No one could ever measure up to Brian Sullivan.” “What an amazing fellow” said the passenger. “How did you meet him?” “Well, I never actually met Brian. He died before I had the chance. I married his widow.”

PUT IT AWAY A man approached the window of a movie theatre with a chicken on his shoulder and asked for two tickets. ‘Who’s the other ticket for?’ the ticket girl asked. ‘For my pet chicken.’ He said, pointing to the bird. ‘I’m sorry,’ the girl tells him, ‘but we don’t allow animals in the theatre.’ The man walked around the corner of the building. He was wearing a short-sleeved T-shirt, so he stuffed the chicken into his pants. He returned to the ticket window and bought a ticket, entered the theatre, and sat down. The chicken started to get too hot, so the man, figuring it was okay because it was dark, unzipped his pants to let the chicken stick its head out. The woman seated next to him looked down in horror. She nudged her friend Amanda and whispered, ‘Amanda! This man next to me just unzipped his pants!’ Amanda replied, ‘Oh, don’t worry about it. Just ignore him. If you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all. ‘The woman whispered back, ‘I know, I know, but this one’s eating my popcorn!’

The reindeer said, “Well, I hope he’s having better luck than I am!
