HRH The Duke of York, KG at The Printing Charity HRH The Duke of York, KG, in his role as The Printing Charity’s President for 2015, attended the charity’s 188th Annual Luncheon at Stationers’ Hall, London on 5 November. The Duke of York said it had been an honour to be The Printing Charity’s President for 2015 and congratulated the charity on what it has done and continues to do to help people in difficulty, as well as young people coming into the printing industry to develop the skills they need. Speaking at the event, The Duke of York said: “Printing is part of life, but it requires skills. Thank you to everyone here today for the work you do to raise the printing industry’s profile and encourage young people to become skilled.” The Printing Charity’s Chairman, Jon Wright, announced that in 2015, the year the charity is marking the 150th anniversary of the granting of its first Royal Charter by Queen Victoria, it will help over 1,000 people. He outlined how the charity will achieve this through its financial grants programme, its two sheltered homes, initiatives such as the Print Futures Awards, and partnerships with other charities and organisations. Jon Wright said: “Our work is also focused on apprenticeships. This includes helping to fund a teacher’s resource pack promoting apprenticeships to 15-18 year olds. In 2016, as part of the print industry led apprenticeship trailblazer, the charity will be assisting apprentices with costs associated with their study.” At the event, The Duke of York presented Lord Black of Brentwood, Executive Director of the Telegraph Media Group and the charity’s Vice President, with a President Emeritus Award for his work on the charity’s behalf. www.theprintingcharity.org.uk

St Bride Foundation new fundraising campaign MANY of you will be aware St Bride Foundation is a charity, which housed the original print school and technical library and opened its doors on 23 February 1891 to serve the community of Fleet Street and the surrounding area. St Bride Library has one of the world’s most remarkable collections of books and artifacts celebrating the history of print in all its glory. It has been an incredible, irreplaceable resource for past generations and they now need to ensure it grows and develops for future generations of printers and designers. The Heritage Lottery Fund hopes to support the Foundation going forward with much-needed funds to bring the building back to its former glory. To begin restoration however, the Foundation needs to conduct surveys and produce plans. The new campaign calls for your support to help raise £125,000 to start this process. The campaign was launched on the 21 October 2015 — the Foundation started on the 23 February 1891and it will celebrate its 125th year anniversary in 2016. They are delighted that with the help of Splash Worldwide, who have designed the campaign, they are now up and running with the first two books fostered by Imprint MIS and Clicks Print. Glennys Bourne, Director, Imprint — “Anyone associated with print must be fascinated by both the historic building and the amazing collection of books and artifacts at St Bride — and the curators are still enthusiastically unveiling more! All of us at Imprint are proud and excited to be associated with the Foundation and to support the restoration of St Bride and its contents. It isn’t often that one gets a chance to personally influence the protection and development of such a valuable and relevant heritage. We hope that the St Bride Foundation will receive all the support it needs to raise the money for the campaign and become eligible for the Heritage

Lottery Fund, which will enable them to go forward with the restoration.” John Fairley, Creative Director, Splash Worldwide - “Being invited to help launch the St Bride fundraising challenge was, for me, the prospect not of work but of a labour of love. With a background in graphic design it’s not an exaggeration to say that I truly love type and print. I work in digital more and more these days, but nothing for me matches the visceral thrill of print — the paper, the inks and even, of course, the smell! The first time I set foot in St Bride I was smitten by the passion of the curators and the sight of so much incredible history of type and printing. I could spend a week in St Bride and not tire of discovering the treasures it holds. And, of course, these treasures should not be hidden; they should be accessible to all. This is why St Bride needs to be restored to its former glory and requires things like lifts to all the floors, not 16 staircases. It needs to serve the demands of the next generation of designers and printers, to have its repository of excellence and instruction on display and on hand to inspire, to be enjoyed and to educate. And like most things, that takes money. We hope The Heritage Lottery Fund will commit to supporting St Bride, but first £125,000 needs to be found to help unlock the funds. I’m sure that everyone who cares about craft will join with me in helping raise that money and so secure the future of St Bride.” Glyn Farrow, Chief Executive St Bride Foundation - “John’s comment above is just one of the myriad expressions of support that we receive with each new visitor to St Bride. Many of the rising stars of the print and design industries come back time and again and bring new friends who share their passion, often discovering something new and exciting that helps them in their careers. I feel very privileged to be at the helm of somewhere that has such an exciting future, sharing the best of our print heritage with the creative community of tomorrow.” To donate: https://mydonate.bt.com/events/125years/248972 St Bride Foundation: www.sbf.org.uk; Splash Worldwide: www.splashworldwide.com; Imprint MIS Business Solutions: www.imprint-mis.co.uk; Clicks Print: www.clicks.co.uk

Colour match is key to H&H Reeds Printers A Heidelberg Linoprint CP digital press has been installed at H&H Reeds Printers who are based in Penrith in the Lake District. “Colour calibration and connectivity was key to our decision,” says managing director Andy Jackson. “The new Heidelberg Digital Front End was convincing. It means our digital printing will be totally Prinect integrated and will match the litho side. Although there is no ISO colour standard for digital, Heidelberg will calibrate the new press to our own in-house standard and we believe the colour match will enable customers to switch work between technologies with confidence and with the knowledge that work is produced to give them the optimum value.” The company believes that A4 landscape will be popular formats. The eight staff currently using Prinect workflows welcome the opportunity to work with technology which has the same look and feel.

Although the business operates 24 hours a day, the new 110 pages per minute digital press will initially only run days. In the future there is the possibility that litho operators will be trained to run the Linoprint so that digital work can be handled overnight when necessary. The company runs a Speedmaster XL 74-4+L litho machine and it is a regular investor. Last year it upgraded to a Polar 78N to run alongside its remaining Polar 115. It was also an early adopter of Prinect Postpress Manager. H&H Reeds Printers serves a comprehensive market, from councils and local government through to large and small independent customers. Tourism is one important market locally and regional business accounts for 80% of the printers’ work, the remaining 20% from national accounts. It produces everything from business cards to 500,000 run colour leaflets and magazine work. www.heidelberg.com

Hybrid Services to distribute the MTEX Blue printer MTEX Solutions has announced the appointment of Hybrid Services Ltd as sole distributor for the new MTEX Blue dye-sublimation printer in the UK & Ireland. The MTEX Blue with disperse inks for dye-sublimation was launched earlier this year and, like all MTEX digital textile printers, has heat fixation in-built, so print and heat fixing (sublimation) is completed in one smooth process, eliminating the need for a separate calendar. As an all-in-one solution, the MTEX Blue with disperse inks and in-line fixation will print and finish at a speed of 55sqm/hour and will retail in the UK at £44,950 plus VAT. Hybrid Services Ltd is the exclusive Mimaki distributor in the UK & Ireland and their appointment is expected to have a big impact on the sign and display market bringing greater access of this affordable allin-one solution to the market. Eloi Ferreira, CEO of MTEX Solutions says, “Hybrid is the UK home of Mimaki, and MTEX is proud of our world OEM agreement with Mimaki Japan. Therefore it made perfect sense to appoint Hybrid with their range of professional resellers to continue to grow the MTEX install base in the sign and display, home furnishing and apparel markets.” With the growing demand in the market for digital textile printing, the

MTEX Blue offers superb quality at great speeds with punchy, vibrant colours and in-line fixation. The MTEX Blue is a direct-to-textile polyester fabric printer with four CMYK Panasonic heads with variable drop and adjustable head height to accommodate different thicknesses and types of fabrics and prints up to 1080dpi. The machine is perfect for printing applications for flag, front-lit and back-lit display, events and exhibitions and all soft signage applications as well as materials for interior soft furnishings and fireretardant polyester fabrics. Phil Thomas, director at Hybrid Services Ltd comments, “We’re very pleased to be able to offer the MTEX Blue printer through our specialist

textile resellers. With award-winning Mimaki technology at the heart of the system, the printer is an ideal option for companies looking for a turnkey textile solution.” Discussing the virtues of the new printer, Thomas highlights a key feature; “The MTEX Blue benefits from Mimaki’s latest state-of-the-art print engine technology which allows the head to be set at a greater height to cope with the varied nature of direct to textile printing. “Hybrid is perfectly placed to help companies looking at taking their next steps in textile printing to get the most from the MTEX Blue, thanks to its network of specialist textile resellers, decades of wide format textile printing experience

and substantial support and backup operation.” The Blue offers a true fabric printing solution with no compromise to the integrity of the material after continuous use. With disperse dyes the inks are essentially ‘bonded’ into the fibres through the heat fixation (sublimation) process and so you can wash the fabrics, fold, handle and re-wash if needed, with absolutely no degradation of the image. Bruising, marking, creasing and cracking are eliminated completely due to the image becoming part of the fabric compared to sitting on top of it, as with most other sign and display printers. Stewart Bell, MD of MTEX Technologies UK says, “We’re delighted to appoint Hybrid as distributor in the UK for the MTEX Blue product. This machine is the perfect all-in-one solution for numerous markets including sign and display, interiors and fashion and at a price: performance level never seen before. MTEX is leading the global digital textile print market. “We’re very happy that the Mimaki reseller channel is now able to offer the MTEX Blue to their customers via Hybrid, this can only mean that printers have better and more flexible solutions to offer their target markets, than ever before.” www.hybridservices.co.uk

SPS Group Now Colour Matching with iGen 5 THE SPS Group, a leading provider of intelligent retail marketing solutions, has installed the U.K.’s first Xerox iGen 5 Press, supplied by Xerox concessionaire and premier partner, Advanced Business Equipment, as part of its expansion in digital production printing. The SPS Group works for leading brands, including Wickes and Tesco, producing a wide range of printed collaterals and point of sale materials. “Our clients are some of the U.K.’s biggest brands which means it’s essential that we can produce work exactly to their guidelines,” said Toby Martin, director, The SPS Group. “The iGen 5 Press allows perfect colour matching meaning high quality, on brand work, every time. This will enable us to broaden our range of services and grow our business.” The iGen 5 is fully customisable to meet page volume, application type and colour needs — all while delivering market-leading press uptime. The new Xerox press will be used in conjunction with Mauve, SPS Group’s online repository and workflow solution, that enables clients to perform activities such as access digital asset libraries, control stock, make approvals and create artwork and ticketing. “The SPS Group is under pressure to consistently produce high quality materials in limited time without letting colour standards slip,” said Adele Cable, business consultant, Advanced Business Equipment. “The iGen 5’s

optional fifth colour unit increases the ability to match a larger gamut of Pantone colours or unknown spot colours without hindering productivity.” www.xerox.com

New TX300P-1800 Mimaki for direct-to-textile printing MIMAKI introduced the brand-new directto-textile inkjet printer at ITMA 2015 in Milan, Italy, last month. ITMA is the world’s most established textile and garment machinery exhibition, bringing together industry leaders for a discussion on emerging trends and innovative solutions. Mimaki debuted theMimaki TX300P-1800, an innovative 1.8m roll-to-roll direct-totextile inkjet printer in Hall 18, Stand C104. “The TX300P-1800 is designed to meet the market demand for smaller lot sizes, faster delivery times and the ability to quickly produce samples,” explains Mike Horsten, General Manager Marketing of Mimaki EMEA. “We are also mindful of the shift in textile production from both analogue to digital and from centralised to distributed production. We envision a day not too far in the future when consumers will be able to download or create their own patterns rather than being limited to commercially available designs. The TX300P-1800, which is available with a variety of ink types and produces very high quality, is ideal for this new distributed model of textile printing.” The TX300P-1800 eight colour inkjet printer features a new printhead that ejects ink droplets at high speed to ensure accurate ink placement with a high head gap. This makes the printer ideal for printing high quality images on all types of fabrics, including thicker and textured materials. Other features of the TX300P-1800 include print resolution of up to 1,080dpi with drop sizes ranging from 6 to 24pl. Small droplets create beautiful high-resolution printing, and

large droplets are useful for high-speed printing. Print speeds more than twice as fast as that of a conventional printer makes the TX300P capable of printing up to 68m²/hour and based on Mimaki’s unique and reliable techniques developed over years of textile inkjet printer research and development, the TX300P has stable textile transport that maintains optimum tension. Available in the UK and Ireland from December 2015 through exclusive Mimaki distributor, Hybrid Services Ltd; the TX300P-1800 is testament to Mimaki’s heritage in digital textile printing. The new machine’s predecessor, the Tx2-1600, has been used for textile printing worldwide for the last 14 years and Hybrid’s national sales manager, Textile and Apparel, Stephen Woodall explains; “Mimaki’s expertise in the digital textile market is undisputed and the release of the new model confirms its ongoing commitment to the sector.

The TX300P-1800 is set to be an exciting addition to Mimaki’s textile and apparel portfolio with such versatility of printing onto almost any type of natural or man-made fabric.” The TX300P is compatible for use with sublimation dye, disperse dye, pigment, reactive dye, and acid dye inks to meet a wide range of application needs. Sublimation dye inks are available at commercial launch with other inks following soon. These 2L ink packs enable uninterrupted printing on longer runs, which are assisted by automatic detection and cleaning of clogged nozzles. The Nozzle Recovery System ensures that good nozzles are used as substitutes when clogged nozzles are not recovered after cleaning. Mimaki offers the TX300P with a choice of powerful digital front ends; Mimaki RasterLink 6 or TxLink3 Lite. The latter offers simple RGB and CMYK colour replacement on raster and vector data to more accurately achieve corporate and other special colours, as well as the ability to produce different colour patterns. The production of large, seamless patterns from a single image, including repeat and mirror patterns is possible, along with the simple creation of multi-colour ICC profiles using Mimaki’s unique profile wizard. Horsten told QPP, “We think its quality, speed and affordability will generate ideas about many new opportunities for quick print professionals and we look forward to working with them to change the way textile printing is accomplished in the future.” www.hybridservices.co.uk

Xerox: Five New Ways to Print, Share and Protect XEROX has developed five new tools for mobile devices and multifunction printers (MFPs) that make it even easier for remote workers to recreate the same workflows they use in the office. Workers can securely send documents from their mobile device to colleagues or the cloud, as well as print to just about any printer or MFP. “Working on the go often brings unneeded complexity and workflow jams like when you can’t connect to a local printer or your company’s cloud repositories,” said Jim Rise, senior vice president, Office and Solutions Business Group, Xerox. “These five easy-to-use tools help break down the barriers of working remotely because employees shouldn’t see diminished productivity when they’re outside the four walls of their office.” Xerox Mobile Print Cloud v3.0 now includes “@PrintByXerox,” which enables secure mobile printing to any Xerox ConnectKey-enabled MFP. If you’re spending the day at headquarters and need to print a document, this lets you email it to a dedicated email address (i.e. companyname@printbyxerox.com) and securely release the job at the MFP nearest to where you’re working. Xerox Mobile Print Solution v3.6 now includes Apple AirPrint integration and several other enhancements. Xerox Wireless Print Solutions Adapter adds a wireless connection, enabling mobile printing capabilities such as Google Cloud Print and Apple AirPrint on any printers or MFPs that don’t have those capabilities built in. This pocket-sized adapter sits next to the device and integrates seamlessly. Xerox’s popular Mobile Link App now supports Android as well as iOS devices, and adds even more cloud capabilities. For example, a sales professional can scan or take a photo of invoices from their mobile device and automatically send it to the accounts receivable department’s SharePoint site, file a copy in their DropBox account and email it to their manager, simultaneously.

Mobile Print Cloud and Print Solutions adapter are just two of the five ways to print, share and protect with Xerox

Xerox’s new PrintSafe Software provides an authentication and pull printing security solution for most printers and MFPs. PrintSafe Software also works with most industry standard card readers. This affordable solution runs on both Xerox and non-Xerox devices allowing authenticated users to release their print jobs anywhere at any time regardless of location. Availability: The Xerox Mobile Print Cloud v3.0, Xerox Mobile Print Solution and Xerox PrintSafe Software are now available worldwide. FS Brabo is a four-weight, serif font that reinterprets early book typefaces and whose swashes and ligatures bring colour and character not just to editorial projects but also signage, advertising and identities. It makes its debut in a specially commissioned four page sampler, designed by traditional type specialists, The Counter Press, to celebrate FS Brabo’s literary leanings. Created by Fontsmith’s Fernando Mello, FS Brabo takes its inspiration from a class of book typeface that originated in the 16th century. ‘Garaldes’, which include Bembo, Garamond and Plantin, have rounded serifs and moderate contrast between strokes. FS Brabo’s serifs are chunkier and squarer than a Garalde, to give it crispness in text. Fernando was inspired by the extraordinary archive of early book typefaces at the worldrenowned Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp, which he first encountered while attending Frank Blokland’s Expert class Type Design course at the Plantin Institute of Typography. It was there that he became engrossed in the collection of early metal type, matrices, punches and type samples

it into the river Scheldt, unwittingly giving the town its name: the Dutch for ‘hand-throw’ is hand werpen. More on FS Brabo: FS Brabo is not a revival, but very much a contemporary, personal interpretation of a garalde. Brabo’s ‘ct’ and ‘st’ ligatures, uppercase italic swashes and contextual ending ligatures – ‘as’, ‘is’, ‘us’ – all preserve the beauty and character by figures such as Garamond and Granjon. So of traditional typefaces, but its serifs are thicker much so that he took on the mighty task of developing ‘a beautiful, functional, serifed text font’ than a garalde. Their sharp cuts and squared edges give them a crispness at text sizes. The contrast of his own. For the four page sampler, The Counter Press has in stroke width in Brabo, not as pronounced as in typical 16th century fonts, allied to the presence produced a typographic tour-de-force, displaying of generous counters, gives the family a strong, FS Brabo in all its variations and sizes. Taking its sturdy, affable character in body text. cue from the font’s literary lineage, the sampler OpenType features such as cap italic swashes, employs a number of different typographic contextual ending swashes – programmed only formats, including book title page, chapter openings and a play manuscript. The series of texts to appear at the end of words – and stylistic alternatives make FS Brabo a complete and re-tell the legend that inspired the name of the font, of the Roman hero, Silvius Brabo, and the evil well-equipped typeface. Comprehensive testing giant, Antigoon – the same tale that is said to have was carried out at text and display sizes, too, to prevent counters from filling in. All of which makes given Antwerp its name. it a very modern take on a traditional workhorse Antigoon had been charging ships’ captains serif typeface: colourful and versatile enough to extortionate tolls and chopping off the hands adorn editorial projects, signage, advertising and of those who refused to pay up. Brabo finally logotypes. downed Antigoon after a long and terrible duel, www.fontsmith.com cutting off the giant’s own hand and throwing

Polar Digicut stars at Amberley Labels adds Heidelberg’s open house HP Indigo to production THE new Polar Digicut entry level laser die-cutter has arrived in Brentford and made its UK debut at Heidelberg’s Rapid Response open house in November. Jim Todd, sales director of Heidelberg UK, says: “The main feature of this open house remains the application of Linoprint digital printing combined with LED-UV offset technology to produce dry sheets that can be immediately processed for rapid order delivery. But it is fantastic news that we were able to reveal a new product, one which can add value and broaden the portfolio of the “Rapid Response” printer. “The Polar Digicut is a manually fed laser die-cutter that will open up a range of opportunities for cutting, perforating, creasing and engraving to produce items like high quality bespoke stationery, greetings cards, menus, packaging, jigsaws and lanterns. It is now commercially available to buy.” The time taken to produce pieces on the Digicut will depend on the complexity of the design. At its simplest it could produce a personalised book mark in 18 seconds whereas a highly complex patterned folding box might take six minutes. There are no additional tool costs and set up time is minimal. It is ideal for the one to 500 run job which needs to stand out from the crowd. Paul Thompson, Polar product specialist at Heidelberg UK, says: “I think small and medium sized printers who want to offer something different with a modest capital outlay have come to view the Digicut. It might also appeal as a sample maker for carton producers. Its quality of cut and ability to handle fine detailed work is exceptional.” Heidelberg showed a range of Polar cutting technology and Stahlfolders. Other third parties represented at this Rapid Response open house were: Muller Martini; Tharstern; IST; Morgana; Swemko and ATS Banding. www.heidelberg.com

Working with HP, we are always guaranteed superb after-sales and technical support, and this has been an important part of ensuring a long-term partnership,” concluded Smith. www.hp.com

Great 007 show as ex-Spectre-d

London Calling once again proved to be a showcase for inspirational ideas with innovative applications for quick print professionals. We discovered more intelligent technology and integrated solutions, all designed to put more profit in print.

D

UPLO’S LONDON CALLING has been hailed yet another success, with deals signed at the show worth almost £750,000 and a pipeline of new sales prospects for the print finishing pioneer and its partners. Hundreds of visitors over the two days had reallive demonstrations of innovative workflows where show visitors could trail-blaze around the stalls and print their own personalised products ranging from fridge mats, Christmas cards and photobooks. First deal signed by Duplo involved Rapidity, which has embarked on a new wave of investment for its modern digital hub at its headquarters in central London. Central to its expansion is a raft of new systems from Duplo, of which the latest — a Duplo iSaddle Booklet System — was formally signed at the print finishing pioneer’s London Calling event on Tuesday. Manor Printing Services, of Wooton-under Edge, Gloucestershire, also took a Duplo iSaddle Booklet System. Other deals included Berkhamstedbased The Print Centre; a long-established Duplo customer that will ramp up capacity by becoming the UK’s first user of Duplo’s recently launched 600i Booklet System. MPC Printing Solutions at Enfield has also signed for the Duplo 600i Booklet System. Held at Sunbeam Studios, in Ladbroke Hall, North Kensington, Duplo’s partners at London Calling 7 — which had a James Bond theme — were Antalis, Apogee, BPIF, Fujifilm, Grafitec, Infigo, Neopost, Proskills, Renz and Vivid. Highlights of the show included seven product launches, the inaugural London meeting of the Duplo Owners’ Club, focusing on the Best Bond for perfect binding solutions, and a meeting of the HP Young Entrepreneurs’ Network and a BPIF Apprentices’ Forum. There was also a PrintIT! School visit for winners of their annual competition — all designed to promote and showcase young talent into the print industry — and the handover of a £4,340 cheque to the Proskills PrintIT! Schools into Industry programme. The money came through a yearlong fundraising campaign pioneered by Duplo and its partners. The students got the opportunity to speak with apprentices in Print from the BPIF’s Apprentice Council, who shared their personal experiences with the class and gave the students a great insight into what it is like to do an apprenticeship in the print industry. Sarah Crumpler, Duplo UK Marketing Manager, said: “It is great to be encouraging young people into print! We love seeing how excited the students are and getting hands-on with

the demonstrations, which we know they really appreciate as well. It also reminds us of our unique contribution to PrintIT!, of which we are so pleased to have supported for the last decade.” Now in its seventh year, London Calling has become an established event on the print industry calendar. Duplo once again brought together a group of key partners from pre- to post-press to share their latest innovations. The 2015 event was held at Sunbeam Studios, North Kensington, from 3-4 November. Previous venues include East Wintergarden, Hilton Docklands, Tate Modern, IMAX, British Music Experience at the O2 and Somerset House. www.duplouk.com

PASSIT! PARTNERS RAISE £4340 IN JOINT FUNDRAISING EFFORTS FOR PRINTIT! IT’S official… the PassIT! fundraising campaign set up in 2014 with Duplo UK’s London Calling partners has been a huge success! For the past year, Duplo’s London Calling partners have been passing the PassIT! baton in order to raise money for Proskills’ Schools into Industry Programme, PrintIT!. Over the past year, each company has taken it upon themselves to raise money and awareness for the programme during their allocated one month slots… and what a fantastic job they have done. We have seen cake sales, charity barbeques, long distance runs and cycles, training services for free in exchange for donations, charity fun days and much more, all in aid of helping PrintIT! reach more young people than ever before.

Proskills UK (reg. charity no: 1155635) was delighted to announce this good news at Duplo’s London Calling VIP evening celebration. CEO Jonathan Ledger collected a cheque for a whopping £4,340.00 in donations from Duplo UK and its London Calling partners: Optimus, Antalis, Apogee (formerly Balreed), Taopix, Vpress, LumeJet, Renz, Neopost, and Vivid. PrintIT! is a nationwide education initiative that has been teaching students about the Print, Paper and Packaging industries since 2005 and runs solely on the support of the Printing industry. That is why having the on going support from the industry itself is so vital to the programme. Jonathan Ledger, CEO of Proskills UK Group commented: “WOW! 10 companies over 10 months have smashed one goal! What a fantastic amount of money raised throughout the past year, that will go directly towards helping more young people be inspired and supported to enter the Print, Paper and Packaging industries. PassIT! has been a landmark fundraising campaign, as much of the money raised has been so generously donated by Duplo UK and its London Calling partners employee teams. Individuals have peddled, run, provided consultations and even cooked their way to raising these much needed funds. Many thanks to all who donated their time and effort to raise this brilliant sum. Proskills does not receive any other funding for PrintIT! so this donation is gratefully received.” If your organisation feels it could support the PrintIT! Schools into Industry programme in any way, please get in touch with the team: 01235 833 844 or email sii@proskills.co.uk

Friends in the print trade would share the most helpful and best priced suppliers that could source absolutely everything and anything. In recent years the 6600 UK quick printers have got together and referred their favourite suppliers to the QPP trade suppliers directory which is published in every issue of the print and posted magazine, and also on the regularly used search engine on the website front page. This search facility has directories for print shops and trade suppliers with a drop down tab for trade or retail, do please try it out and send in your recommendations. www.QuickPrintPro.co.uk

NOMINATIONS PLEASE QPP readers are requested to invite their favourite suppliers to appear in our directory, the ones that deliver on quality, price and on time. The recommended suppliers can complete the referral form for members to share best practice in our purchasing of print supplies and services. If your present supplier doesn’t measure up, trade up to one in the QPP Finda Supplier / Finda Product directory. The directory has a cross reference to products to match a supplier and flag up who markets what best to our group of 6600 UK quick print shops. Please download this form and complete your nomination for your preferred suppliers. Thanks for sharing

22 | DIGITAL IMAGING | QUICK PRINT PRO | DECEMBER 2015 – JANUARY 2016

Driven to Distraction

Although it says digital imaging at the top of the page regular readers will know this column usually starts with a little wander through other, though often related topics before returning to the main menu. Martin Christie hits ‘start’…

G

OOGLE OF COURSE has plenty to do with digital imaging as it provides the source content of millions of browsers worldwide regardless of quality or copyright. But also in its campaign to do good, as it sees it, Google has dabbled in other things including the so-called driverless car currently undergoing tests on the American West Coast. Of course the vehicle isn’t entirely driverless, but takes the role of an electronic chauffeur and consigns the former pilot to the position of passenger, while it determines speed, direction and all the many other actions required to navigate the varied hazards of the highway. A machine controlled by a computer: ‘what could possible go wrong?’ Google’s logic is impeccable. Most accidents are caused by human error. Remove the human and prevent the error. 23 vehicles have been employed in the testing, including an entirely electric prototype which looks like an overgrown child’s toy, and several modified but otherwise normal saloon cars. Between them they have clocked up over a million miles, and their progress has been heralded by many as the future for transport, saving not only road casualties but traffic congestion. There is no doubt that lessons learned and devices developed through these tests will start to be incorporated in future cars, along with other driver aids, but there is a serious consideration in how far these trends can go without risking more harm than they avoid. The test vehicles have been involved in 14

traffic accidents, all of them minor on public roads, 12 of which were, according to Google, the fault of the other vehicle — driven by a human being obviously. Mostly the cars were run into by another car whilst stopped: one of the most common accidents in any traffic situation, and generally considered to be the fault of the party doing the running in. However a contributory factor can be the other car stopping unexpectedly — which can be done deliberately to cause an injury claim — or failing to move when it is expected to, or in fact any manoeuvre which a human driver might not anticipate, but might be quite logical for a computer. A further look at the facts reveals that the cars have not been tested in difficult weather conditions — when human judgement is at a premium — and have difficulty reacting to unusual circumstances like rubbish in the road. Even temporary traffic lights can be ignored because they rely on preprogrammed route information. Everyone who relies on sat nav knows

how reliable that is. If it encounters something it cannot immediately compute, the car’s instinct is to slow down or stop. The fact that one vehicle was recently cautioned by the Highway Patrol for travelling too slow and impeding traffic says it all. I am reminded of the legend of the little old lady who has been driving fifty years and never had an accident — but she’s seen a load, usually in her rear view mirrors! Testing in California, of course, provides very good weather conditions most of the time, and like most of the United States, very straight roads. Apparently the Google cars panic when they encounter lots of tight bends. And one thing noticeably absent from North American roads is Britain’s favourite road obstruction the roundabout. Given its aversion to the unexpected, the Google car would probably find the task of feeding into flowing traffic on a roundabout way beyond it in terms of acceptable risk, and likely sit it out till the occupants of the car (no doubt locked in for safety reasons) had died of old age. Driving a car is one of those immensely complicated tasks which highlights the capabilities of the human race above other close relatives in evolution. You might be able to get an infinite number of monkeys to write Shakespeare, but you would need to go to infinity and beyond with Buzz Lightyear to safely put them at the wheel of a car. Driving requires not only basic hand eye co-ordination, which many primates can master, but a complex balance of anticipation, experience and judgement. Learning these skills is an expected right of passage for most young people in the western world, and mastering them safely an important lesson in life and responsibility. Surely anything that diminishes or removes these responsibilities is a dangerous thing. Most car drivers are not naturally reckless, but many accidents are caused because there are already too many distractions — mobile phones, loud music, the scenery etc. Removing any need to concentrate on the road in front will not make them any safer, or give them any chance of reacting when an incident occurs the autopilot cannot handle and the switches flip to manual. More technical driver aids may be inevitable, but the other side of anti-lock brakes, traction control and the like is that too many drivers rely on them and fail to anticipate and allow for situations the technology cannot cope with. When Sir Stirling Moss asked what it was like to race cars when they were so dangerous you were likely to die if you crashed, he said simply “well you tried not to crash!”

DECEMBER 2015 – JANUARY 2016 | QUICK PRINT PRO | DIGITAL IMAGING | 23

Driving a computer, of course, does not have the same risk element for the user or those around, but all actions have consequences, and you may begin to see where all this is leading. It’s easy to use the example of the Google car, because we all drive, and if still alive to read this, must have reached a certain level of competence at it. A total novice can be put in charge of a computer, or more likely a mobile device, not only without training, but without any chance of anticipating the hazards that may be in the digital road ahead. I have raised the point several times before in columns, where the proliferation of popular electronic devices has enabled a whole new generation of customers to pester the print shop with requests for product and services which may or may not be achievable. Because they have no prior experience, they have no real understanding of what is involved. The digital revolution put an end to many traditional skills, particularly in the print industry. It was not just the demise of hot metal type, letraset and galley proofs, but the knowledge of the specialists that worked with them that disappeared. Much of that skill was based upon experience, learning to work with tools and understanding the practical consequences of actions, and therefore anticipating possible problems. These skills had been passed on over decades, some even centuries, because the practicalities of print had changed very little over the years. Digital has made all of that redundant, but it hasn’t removed the need to apply the same understanding of the process to the tasks in hand. Just because you can do something at the press of a button, instead of painstakingly loading a tray of lead type, doesn’t mean you don’t need to understand at least some of what is happening when the button is pressed. Just like the driver aids in the aforementioned car, the technology can help, but only if you know what you are doing when you get behind the wheel. If you can’t anticipate the hazards you may not, unlike Sir Stirling, try and avoid the crash. My very real concern, and this is why I use the analogy of the driverless car as a dramatic illustration of the issue, is that the technology is making us all lazy, and that by degree, those that follow will only be more so. Just as the skills of the old school printers have been lost, the practical understanding of early digital days seems to be an age away in a time that is so fast moving. It is widely recognised that people in the digital age have so many more distractions their attention span has come down to a matter of seconds. When it is so much easier to tick like in a box on

vivid-online.com

social media than actually do something, it will not be a surprise if we spawn a generation that cannot tie a shoe lace without watching a video on YouTube. The problem for the print shop of the near future may not just be the customer, but the search for suitable staff who can do more than click and play, or like the Google car just sit and do nothing if they encounter something they don’t understand.

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT…

In complete contrast to the Google car, I had a chance to road test a machine that is an absolute challenge of human hand eye co-ordination, concentration and judgement. Finishing equipment may not be the most exciting thing in the studio but they are an essential, and often very profitable part of the job. Caslon lent us their 38 inch Rollataq Solo Mounting and laminating machine, probably the most basic of most of their range, but quite versatile for all that. As it says on the box, it can mount and laminate, two very simple tasks, but still needing a little bit of skill and a bit more of concentration. The only assistance it requires from technology is electricity to power its rollers, other than that everything else is in the hand, or the foot, of the operator. It has no flashing lights, beeps or toggle switches to confuse you. No sensors to tell you its malfunctioned even though you know it hasn’t. No drivers that need updating. No network capability, nor usb interface. It just does its job with a little crucial human input. The two main silicone coated rollers can be raised or lowered to cope with board up to half an inch thick, the pressure being adjusted by a hand lever.

The rollers then feed the board through at the operation of a pedal accelerator. It doesn’t apply any glue, so needs self adhesive board or other suitable media, the backing coating being peeled off as the mounting is fed to give an even finish. It’s very solidly built. No grey box here but a rugged device that looks more like a pre-production prototype. But that’s its good point — there’s nothing to go wrong unless the operator loses concentration or doesn’t feed the media properly. And if something does go wrong nothing that can’t be fixed with a screwdriver. As well as pressure mounting an additional top roller can apply a scratch resistant and UV proof single laminate coat to the top surface, so it’s a true laminator rather than an encapsulator, and as such nicely adaptable for the amount of space it takes up. It’s light enough to be wheeled around on castors should it get in the way, and is quiet in operation, unless the human device gets its fingers stuck in the rollers. Simplicity is indeed a selling point on the Solo model as we also have a double-sided heat activated laminator in the studio. And while it is very good and simple to use, when it comes to changing and aligning the rolls there is rush to volunteer from the rest of the staff. Naturally Clicquot 3 comes from a creative reuse of byproducts from Veuve Clicquot’s own champagne production process. By implementing their vision to continually reduce their environmental impact, now means that after being pressed, the residue of grape skins can be used in a new way. Thanks to Favini’s know-how in the creation of papers made of residues from agro-industrial productions, the skin is dried and then milled to become a raw material for the production of a unique ecological paper, saving 25% of virgin pulp. To obtain the innovative paper used in the Veuve Clicquot ecological packaging, Favini introduces the residues into the paper production cycle, mixing them with water and natural fibres, which in turn reduces the use of cellulose from trees. The new Naturally Clicquot 3 packaging is a unique product that gives a new life to the production residues from one of the most renowned champagnes, whilst replacing a quarter of virgin fibre use. Moreover, in perfect harmony with this ecological paper, the graphics are printed using solvent-free paints and labels adhered with a sugarcane-based compound. Thanks to hundreds of hours of research, improvement processes and a 25 five year long experience in the sector of alternative raw materials, Favini has proven itself to be the ideal partner for Veuve Clicquot in realising the first presentation box made of grape skin. In fact the French wine house has always been keen on innovation and constantly searches for new environmentally friendly solutions. Premier plants another 3,000 trees

Office Paper

The paper that plants trees THE Premier Paper Group have had another mega day of tree planting action this year which saw another 3,000 trees planted at a site in rural Hertfordshire on 19th November. Up until this year’s tree planting day customers who participated in Premier’s Carbon Capture scheme have helped plant over 54,000 trees through the Woodland Trust. Following a hugely successful day of action at the same location last year, where some 3,000 trees were planted in one morning, Premier looked to repeat the achievement again. The trees were planted by customers and the Premier Paper Group staff, who assembled from across the country at The Woodland Trust-owned Heartwood Forest in Hertfordshire which is an 857 acre site and is the largest of The Woodland Trust’s woods in England. The tree planting day of action took place on 19th November, and the native tree species that were planted included; common oak, silver birch, wild cherry, dog rose, blackthorn, aspen, field maple, rowan and hornbeam amongst others. The Premier Paper Group, which is the UK’s largest independent paper merchant, recognises that planting trees helps soak up unwanted carbon dioxide which pollutes the atmosphere, a process known as Carbon Capture.

Premier Paper is offering its customers the opportunity to capture the CO2 emissions from their paper purchases by planting and conserving native woodland right here in the UK. As a corporate partner of the Woodland Trust, Premier Paper signed up to its UK Woodland Carbon Code. This programme sets a new standard for Carbon Capture, removing it from the atmosphere through the creation of native woodland across the country. The scheme operates under the Government’s Woodland Carbon Code, a voluntary standard for woodland creation projects in the UK. The independent certification to this standard provides assurance and clarity about the carbon benefits of these sustainably managed woodlands. It is calculated that 25m² of native UK woodland will capture and store one tonne of CO2 and creating large areas of new native woodland, will, over time, remove hundreds of thousands of tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. www.paper.co.uk/environment/carbon-capture/

Christmas Combo HERE is a special QPP “Readers Only” offer to finish this year in style and improve your finished print presentation in 2016 and beyond. Have you ever bundled up your customers printed books and thought they looked a bit homemade, when you have to wrestle booklets into elastic bands before they jump out and end up on the floor? Some print jobs are just so springy they look a tad trashy. It’s a shame, as the design and print can be so good but let down by the final presentation of the job to the customer. Basically the whole print job could really do with an upgrade on the presentation front as well as take much less space for boxing and circulation. Historically we have tried pressing with weights and trying to hold batches of booklets together with elastic bands. Usually this just exaggerates the fact that the print is just not lying down ready for use. Just three or four eight page A5 folded booklets will not stack together flat without spreading over the counter. Not impressive to any customer. Time to put two pieces of new kit at the very top of your Christmas wish list, namely the Morgana 104 Squarefold and the UMEX Bander. Individually brilliant in their own right, but put together, a true print finish winning combination. As your booklets are made, trimmed if required, they just need a post-press press with the revolutionary Morgana Squarefold 104 to achieve the look and feel of perfect bound books from A4 –A6 . This adds a real increased value to your booklets by giving them a true professional look with the security of a stapled finish and produced at up to 1800 per hour.

Other benefits of Squarefolded books are the reduced packaging capacity to reduce carriage costs and the ability to print onto the spine of thicker booklets. Now that your print is looking far more professional, it is time to pack and present in a smart way too. Even a short run given to your customer in a copier paper box lid will look so much better when banded together in clear film, white or brown paper banded sets. You can even brand the banding with your business logo or your customer’s, charge for the service and ensure you get the repeat business as no-one else can do this. Your customer can now carry away the high class looking job and not have to curse you for dropping them all over his drive when he gets home. Now how much investment will it take to secure your existing customers and attract new ones? One thing for sure is once you have improved your print delivery there is no turning back, plus if you attract one off jobs as new customers have been let down elsewhere they will not want to

go back to juggling booklets after they have experienced a much more professional, flatter transportation of their print. The cost on each job is just pennies, so the return on investment is fast and maybe should be funded from your advertising budget as nothing can say more than a proper print finish. Sorry I promised the figures and have not been stalling on purpose as QPP has negotiated very special pricing for your eyes only. Morgana 104 Squarefold............................. £5,990 UMEX Bander with a few rolls.................... £4,695 Total list price.............................................. £10,685 QPP Special Combo Deal............................. £7,990 Lease this from £43.50 per week and keep your cash for Christmas. Another way to evaluate your investment may be in the saving reported by Royal Mail. Did you now that 1% of un-flattened print is wasted due to the bulbous envelopes being damaged en-route. Upgrading for your customers will deliver the loyalty you deserve. Visit: www.morgana.co.uk, email: sales@morgana.co.uk or call: 01908 608888

DOGS ARE BETTER THAN WOMEN… …and not just at Christmas

Dogs don’t cry. Dogs love it when your friends come over. Dogs don’t care if you use their shampoo. Dogs think you sing great. A dog’s time in the bathroom is confined to a quick drink. Dogs don’t expect you to call when you are running late. The later you are, the more excited dogs are to see you. Dogs will forgive you for playing with other dogs. Dogs don’t notice if you call them by another dog’s name. Dogs are excited by rough play. Dogs don’t mind if you give their offspring away. Dogs understand that farts are funny. Dogs can appreciate excessive body hair. Anyone can get a good-looking dog. If a dog is gorgeous, other dogs don’t hate it. Dogs don’t shop. Dogs like it when you leave lots of things on the floor. A dog’s disposition stays the same all month long. Dogs never need to examine the relationship. Dog’s parents never come for a visit. Dogs love long car trips. Dogs understand that instincts are better than asking for directions. Dogs like beer. Dogs don’t hate their bodies. No dog ever put on three stones after reaching adulthood. Dogs never criticise. Dogs agree that you have to raise your voice to get your point across. Dogs never expect gifts. It’s legal to keep a dog chained up at your house. Dogs don’t worry about germs. Dogs don’t want to know about every other dog you ever had. Dogs like to do their snooping

One day a man is walking down the road when he sees an old man with a nice looking dog.

outside as opposed to in your wallet, desk, and the back of your sock drawer. Dogs don’t let magazine articles guide their lives. You never have to wait for a dog. They’re ready to go 24 hours a day. Dogs have no use for flowers, cards, or jewellery. Dogs don’t borrow your shirts. Dogs enjoy heavy petting in public. Dogs find you amusing when you’re drunk. Dogs can’t talk. Dogs aren’t catty. Dogs seldom outlive you.

HOW DOGS AND WOMEN ARE ALIKE Both tend to have ‘hip’ problems. Neither understand football. Both are good at pretending that they’re listening to every word you say. You can never tell what either of them is thinking. Both put too much value on kissing.

SALES PRIORITY A salesman opened the door of his BMW, when suddenly a car came along and hit the door, ripping it off completely. When the police arrived at the scene, the salesman was complaining bitterly about the damage to his precious BMW. “Officer, look what they’ve done to my Beemer!” he whined. “You salesmen are so materialistic, you make me sick!” retorted the officer, “You’re so worried about your stupid BMW, that you didn’t even notice that your left arm was ripped off!” “Oh my god”, replied the salesman, finally noticing the bloody left shoulder where his arm once was, “Where’s my Rolex!”

TRUTH HURTS A man walks into a drug store with his eight-year old son. They happen to walk by the condom display, and the boy asks: ‘What are these, Dad?’ To which the man matter-of-factly replies: ‘Those are called condoms, son. Men

He goes over to the man and asks: ‘does your dog bite?’ the old man replies ‘No never’.

use them to have safe sex.’’ Oh I see.’, replied the boys pensively. ‘Yes, I’ve heard of that in health class at school.’ He looks over the display and picks up a package of three and asks, ‘Why are there three in this package?’. The dad replies: ‘Those are for highschool boys. One for Friday, one for Saturday, and one for Sunday.’ ‘Cool!’ says the boy. He notices a six-pack and asks ‘Then who are these for?’ ‘Those are for college men,’ the dad answers. ‘TWO for Friday, TWO for Saturday, and TWO for Sunday.’ ‘WOW!’ exclaimed the boy; ‘Then who uses THESE?’ he asks, picking up a 12-pack. With a sigh, the dad replied, ‘Those are for married men. One for January, one for February, one for...’.

DARTS NIGHT A middle aged man and his wife live in a poor part of town and decide to rent out their second bedroom. They advertise and a beautiful young lady enquires about the room. The wife explains that because it is such an old terraced house there is no bath in the house so instead they use a big zinc bath in front of the fire in the living room. The young lady says, “It would be nice to have a bath in front of the open fire at night, but what about your husband?” The wife replies, “If you have a bath on a Monday or a Friday evening it will be fine because he always goes out to a darts match from about 7 O’clock ‘till after 11pm.” “OK,” the girl says. The next night is a Monday so the husband goes out and the wife brings in the zinc bath for the young lady and puts it in front of the fire. When she undresses ready to get in the bath she notices the wife staring at her naked body. The wife realises what she is doing and exclaims, “Sorry but you have got no hair down below.” “I’m a model, so I have to shave it off otherwise it would show through skimpy underwear and so on.” Later that night when the wife goes to bed she tells her husband about

the young lady having no pubic hair. “It must look very strange and unnatural,” says the husband. “You must be making it up. No one would shave down there.” “I could leave the leave the curtains open just a little bit at the top so that you could peep through and see for yourself next time she has a bath,” says the wife. So the following Friday they get the bath out and the husband goes out to his darts match. The young lady gets undressed and the wife sees some eyes peering through the top of the window. The model is facing the window so the wife points and then lifts her skirt up and points at her own thick bushy pubic hair. Later that night in bed she is talking to her husband and he asks her, “Why did you lift your skirt up and show everything?” “Just so that you could compare, you must have seen me a thousand times naked, why are you bothered?” “I have, but the darts team hadn’t.”

TOP BBQ A man goes into B&Q and says, “I’d like to order 5,000 facing bricks.” “Certainly” says the salesman, “Are they for a garage?” “No” says the man; “They’re for a Bar-B-Q” “Why do you need so many?” asks the salesman “Well,” says the man “We live in a 3rd floor flat.”

SIX OR TWELVE? A printer salesman ordered a pizza and the waiter asked if he should cut it in six or twelve pieces. The salesman replies, “Six, please. I could never eat twelve pieces.”

A DOG FOR CHRISTMAS When you call a dog, they usually come to you. When you call a cat; they take a message.

The man says ‘I thought you said your dog did not bite! ‘I did’ replies the old man, but this isn’t my dog!’
