JETRIX KX3 is the hub for Robert Gordon Uni The digital fabrication facility instigated by Robert Gordon University, known as MAKE Aberdeen, recently saw the installation of a JETRIX KX3 to add to the extensive scanning, printing and prototyping technology already available. The project supported by Aberdeen City Council, Creative Scotland and the UK Government Super Connected Cities programme aims to create a studio that will become an incubator for people’s ideas. The objective is to make high end digital design accessible to anyone who wants to make their ideas a reality. Open to both students and members of the public, MAKE Aberdeen provides the latest cutting edge technology including 3D printing, 3D scanning, rapid prototyping, laser cutting and wide format digital printing equipment which means you can now get a production ready design in a fraction of the time and for a fraction of the cost. As Phil Chaplain, Chief Technological Officer at Robert Gordon University says, “rather than making this a facility for just students, we were keen to break down any community barriers and offer this environment to a far wider audience. MAKE Aberdeen offers us an opportunity to collaborate with private individuals, north-east businesses and organisations that have a great idea or small business they want to develop.” The JETRIX KX3 was carefully chosen to suit the environment and size of the space available in the city centre venue. It’s simple to use interface was an added benefit, while offering intelligent same time two and three layer printing and the ability to add a spot UV varnish. Assured quality from the six picolitre head nozzles means razor sharp edge-to-edge
prints are easily achieved, plus it can print on a wide diversity of media including glass, metal, plastic, wood, fabric, cardboard, ceramic and paper. The greatest difficulty was getting this robust 1,220 x 1,220mm stationary flatbed installed, as the city location meant there was the added complication of having to remove a two x thee metre m pane of glass in order to get it in. But the promise of what this community engaged printing project is hoping to achieve meant it was worth it. As Ben Woodruff, Head of National Sales at InkTec, highlights; “For JETRIX, we are particularly proud of this project. It has a local community spirit about encouraging innovation and being able to explore ideas, while also potentially encouraging more people into the printing sector. It is also one of our first printers to be installed in an educational establishment, which demonstrates the quality and versatility of what the JETRIX KX3 can produce and makes it a perfect piece of kit for this fantastic venture.” www.make-aberdeen.com www.inktec-europe.com

New Apprenticeship Funding Investment In Skills The government has set out how apprenticeships will be funded as part of the drive to help millions get the skills they need for a successful career and make Britain a country that works for everyone. Apprenticeships give people more control over their lives and can be the difference between just about managing and pursuing a skilled, long-term career. The government wants to give everyone this opportunity, regardless of their background or where they live, giving more support for 16 to 18 year-olds and those from disadvantaged areas. The funding policy will underpin the new apprenticeship levy, which will deliver muchneeded investment in skills The government will continue to work with employers and providers as it introduces the reforms.\
Main measures confirmed
More support for younger apprentices and disadvantaged people: Government will pay 100% of training costs for employers with fewer than 50 employees who take on apprentices aged 16 to 18 years old. This will also apply to smaller employers who take on 19 to 24 yearolds who were in care or 19 to 24 year-olds with an education and health care plan; £1,000 each from government to employers and training providers who take on 16 to 18 year-olds and 19 to 24 year-olds who were in care or who have an education and health care plan; Providers that train 16 to 18 year-olds on apprenticeship frameworks will be given an additional cash payment equal to 20% of the funding band maximum in order to help them to adapt to the
new, simpler funding model; Providers that train apprentices from the most deprived areas on apprenticeship frameworks will continue to receive additional funding from the government. More than £60 million will be invested in supporting the training of apprentices from the poorest areas in the country, equalling around one third of all apprentices. It is vital that we make sure that these funds are being invested in the right way, which is why we will conduct a fuller review into how to support individuals from all backgrounds into apprenticeships in future. This will look at the support employers should receive, as well as providers, and conclude next year.
More flexibility for employers
Longer for employers to spend funds in their digital account, now with 24 months before they expire, an increase from government’s original proposal of just 18 months; A commitment to introducing the ability for employers to transfer digital funds to other employers in their supply chains, sector or to apprenticeship training agencies in 2018, with a new employer group including the Confederation of British Industry, Federation of Small Businesses, British Chambers of Commerce, Charity Finance Group and EEF — the manufacturers’ organisation — to help government develop this system so that it works for employers; More funding for STEM apprenticeship frameworks and higher pricing of apprenticeship standards to support improved quality, and providing greater flexibility to train those with prior qualifications.
5
This will support the industrial strategy and provide wider opportunities for more individuals to develop new skills Skills Minister Robert Halfon said: “Apprenticeships work. The reforms we are rolling out will guarantee support from employers and government, so that millions of people can get the apprenticeships, skills and jobs for the future. “Our apprenticeship levy will boost our economic productivity, increase our skills base and give millions a leg up on the ladder of opportunity — over 90% of apprentices currently go into work or further training. Making Britain a world leader on apprenticeships is essential if we truly want a country that works for everyone.” To ensure higher-quality apprenticeships, the government has also introduced a new register of apprenticeship training providers, which is now open. All providers on the register will have to pass quality and financial tests. Those with an ‘inadequate’ Ofsted rating for apprenticeship provision will not be eligible to apply to the register. The new apprenticeship funding policy was outlined in August. It will underpin the levy which will be paid by employers with a pay bill of more than £3 million and put the funding of apprenticeships on a sustainable long-term footing so we can support opportunities for all. These measures are the first steps in upskilling the nation by giving millions a leg up on the ladder of opportunity to high-quality jobs, and giving employers the skills they desperately need.
Baroness Dean is The Printing Charity’s President The Printing Charity announced at its 189th Annual Luncheon on 3 November that The Rt Hon. the Baroness Dean of Thornton-leFylde has accepted its invitation to be the charity’s 2017 President. Baroness Dean said: “Once printing is in your blood, it never leaves you. I am looking forward to continuing my association with what is still a great industry as the charity’s 2017 President and supporting the annual Print Futures Awards.”
Baroness Dean started her working life in the Trade Union movement and was subsequently elected General Secretary of the Society of Graphical and Allied Trades (SOGAT), the printing, publishing and paper trades union. She was created a life Peer in 1993 and a member of the Privy Council in 1998. Lord Blunkett, this year’s engaging guest speaker and the charity’s 2016 President, said: “The industry has grown beyond recognition since the charity was set up in 1827, but its work is as important today as it was then. Its welfare support for people in the industry and focus on championing new talent in a sector that continues to innovate are vitally important.”
At the sell-out event, Jon Wright, The Printing Charity’s Chairman, described this year as one of positive change for the charity. New Chief Executive, Neil Lovell, has refocused the charity’s activities, concentrating on welfare and education. The charity has already helped over 1,230 people so far this year, more than the total for 2015. Looking to the future, the charity will be developing its welfare programme and supporting more initiatives to help people working in or wanting to join the industry. The Printing Charity’s Annual Luncheon next year will be on 9 November 2017 at Stationers’ Hall, Ave Maria Lane, London. www.theprintingcharity.org.uk

Xerox Unveils Conduent’s New Global Brand Xerox has announced the latest milestone in its plan to separate into two independent, publicly-traded companies — unveiling the global brand identity of Conduent Incorporated, the soon-to-be industry leading business process services company. “Our brand identity signifies core ideas behind our company and the value we create for our clients,” said Ashok Vemuri, CEO of Conduent following the company’s separation. “Both enterprises and governments are seeking ways to improve and modernise the way they interact with their constituents and clients. We are forming a company built around an unwavering focus on our client’s needs, delivery excellence and a set of core values — all in service of creating more consistent experiences and returns for our stakeholders.” The name Conduent is inspired by the company’s expertise in managing transactional relationships between their clients and their
constituents in areas like customer care, transportation solutions, healthcare, and digital payments. Like the name itself, the brand identity reflects the way Conduent will work as an extension of its clients, helping them drive loyalty, retention and customer satisfaction. A bold typeface conveys stability and complements the symbol while acknowledging a 30-year history supporting the critical operations of businesses and governments. A connection between the “N” and the “T” in the typeface of “Conduent” reinforces that the constituent is at the core of the company’s business model. The connected letters also draw the reader’s eye to this unique
pronunciation of the coined name. The three parallelograms that make up the symbol embody several ideas about the new company. Collectively, they represent movement and agility and represent the relationship between Conduent, its clients and their end users. Individually, they represent three of Conduent’s major stakeholders: clients, employees and investors. The arrow in the centre of the design signals that Conduent helps organisations advance, transform and improve their end-constituent relationships — whether these are shoppers, commuters, patients, customers, employees, or citizens. The orange colour scheme is unique in the global services sector and naturally conveys energy and frames the enclosed arrow. www.conduent.com www.xerox.com
BAPC awards to recognise print industry excellence Outstanding service by companies across Britain will be recognised once again by the British Association for Print and Communications (BAPC). The BAPC Awards will be sponsored by print finishing pioneer Duplo and will culminate in a special luncheon in London early next year. Free to enter, an independent panel will judge the entries that recognise outstanding achievement within the print and communication industry. All nominees will receive the artwork for a certificate so they can demonstrate to their customers that they were in the frame for an accolade. The awards resonate with the BAPC’s aim to cultivate a ‘community of spirit’ that acts as a forum for the graphic arts industry to work together for mutual benefit. The three categories in the awards are: • Business of the Year • Environmental Printer of the Year • Supplier of the Year Entries must be emailed to info@bapc.co.uk, providing contact details of either the person making the nomination or from the company being entered. The BAPC will do the rest. Sidney Bobb, BAPC Chairman, said: “As an association run by printers for printers that shares a wealth of knowledge and hands-on experience, we regularly meet companies that make a truly positive difference in the print and communications industry. Now it’s their chance to show outstanding achievements – we really do want to hear about them.” He added: “The awards will happen thanks to the generous support from Duplo, which has an enviable industry reputation and won last year. We’re most grateful for the support. The finalists will be chosen once the votes have been cast by our independent experts.” Peter Jolly, Duplo UK Managing Director, said: “As a company with an enviable reputation for supporting education and wider printing initiatives, we’re proud to be sponsoring these awards. We were
delighted to win one of the main awards last year and are constantly looking at new ways of demonstrating our unstinting support to wider initiatives, as well as our ability to listen, adapt and deliver on what we promise to our growing customer base.” At the last awards, Duplo took Supplier of the Year while Brilliant Media won Business of the Year and Formara took Environmental Printer of the Year. www.bapc.co.uk

Kall Kwik Leeds Celebrates 35 Years A Leeds graphics design and print centre in Burley Road run by George Gordan from Shipley is celebrating over three decades in business. Kall Kwik Leeds were recently honoured with a Long Service award by Kall Kwik MD Nigel Toplis. On receiving the award, George said: “I am immensely proud of the business that I have built here in Leeds. I have a brilliant team of people working here and many of our clients have been with us for a very long time. We’re in a very competitive market but clients stay loyal to us because we consistently deliver an exceptionally high level of service and do our utmost to find a cost effective solution to whatever printing challenge they may have.” The rise of digital printing has changed the face of the print industry in recent years, and as techniques have developed, customer demands have also evolved. However, George says that while many things have changed, core elements of a professional print business remain the same: “My ethos when I set up Kall Kwik was to help clients get more from their printing through outstanding service and good advice. That might involve finding ways to make print jobs more cost-effective, suggesting creative ideas for better standout or finishing touches that ensure the final product looks stunning. This approach is valued by our clients in 2016 just as much as it was in 1981.” Today the business operates from premises at Burley Road. It has a loyal team of four employees and has several longstanding customers who have used Kall Kwik Leeds services since its launch thirty-five years ago. Kall Kwik Leeds specialises in fast-turnaround digital and litho printing and offers customers a complete range of printing and copying services. Kall Kwik’s top selling services include posters, indoor and outdoor signage, vehicle graphics and the design and build of award-winning exhibition stands. “I am looking forward to my new responsibilities in the UK and helping to further build OKI’s reputation as an industry pioneer across the country. The recent expansion of the colour and smart printer portfolios show how the OKI brand continues to represent both quality and innovation and it’s exciting to be at the helm of marketing in the region at such a time of progress,” says Hargaard. Dylan Haworth is new to OKI, having previously been the general manager channel sales for Brother UK Ltd. His new role at OKI will be both channel and end-user faced
with responsibility for driving the transition from a product to solutions-focused operation. “The ongoing evolution of the printer industry makes this a time of renewed potential for both our customers and our channel network – and one of my major priorities will be the establishing of new relationships and partnerships,” says Haworth. “The fact that a printer can now sit at the heart of a digital workflow gives plenty of opportunities for resellers and systems analysts to add even further value for customers.” www.okieurope.com
Anton Group printing power with HP Indigo 12000
HP has announced that Anton Group, a UK print, mail and fulfilment provider, has invested in two HP Indigo 12000 digital presses to support its thriving direct mail business and the launch of its new marketing services division, Agility. Citing an advance in digital quality as the driver behind the move, Executive Chairman Malcolm Lane-Ley elaborates, “Anton Group has been following developments in digital printing very closely over the last two years. This is particularly true in its core market, direct mail, where there has been a return to growth through the intelligent use of multiple version, high quality, wisely targeted campaigns using variable print. “At the same time, Anton Group has been readying itself for the launch of its marketing services division, Agility. Engaging with clients on a consultative basis, Agility will produce campaigns that drive growth through the use of high quality, high impact, creative print and packaging, exploiting a range of substrates. We believe that only the HP Indigo 12000 could satisfy all of our needs in this respect.” Anton Group will install the two new HP Indigo 12000 Digital Presses at its Laindon base in December. Printing B2-sized sheets in colour at up to 4,600 per hour, the press is capable of producing over two million colour sheets per month, extending productivity even further at the 165,000 square foot facility. UK first for Atlantic and Vinyl Decals Direct DSales the UK distributor for Develop range of multifunctional document imaging systems, has launched the Develop ineo 958 for in-house print rooms and pay-for-print monochrome light production. With an output speed of 95 A4 mono prints per minute, the ineo 958 is not only 20 ppm faster than the predecessor model, it also offers a number of new features for even better performance. A new dual colour scanner has a capacity of 300 sheets and scans at speeds of up to 240 ipm in a single pass. The maximum paper capacity of 6,650 sheets allows even high-volume print jobs to be completed without paper refills. A 150-sheet bypass tray also brings greater media flexibility, by allowing 1200 by 297mm banners to be printed in house. The ineo 958’s media flexibility of up to 300 gsm weight (256 gsm via paper trays and auto duplex) and SRA3 size comes with mixplex/mixmedia and an intelligent paper catalogue functionality,
enabling this device to deliver on a wide range of print jobs, for increased productivity. However speed and media capacity have not been gained with excessive size. The small footprint of the ineo 958 means that this entrylevel production printing system fits easily into a confined in-house print room or commercial pay-for-print shop. Because job throughput requires more than raw speed, the ineo 958 is available with a wide choice of inline finishing options. These include a 100-sheet stapling function, booklet making, post insertion and an A3 Z-fold unit that is integrated into the finisher to save space. Operation is also easy and intuitive for non-skilled operatives using an innovative nine inch colour touch screen panel with pop-up windows open for all function settings, allowing seamless integration of document workflows. An upright operating panel option is also available to ensure good usability when standing in front of the device.
UK first for Atlantic and Vinyl Decals Direct Following their appointment as a Ricoh Partner, Atlantic Tech Services has announced a UK first with the installation of a Ricoh Pro L4130 latex printer in combination with Ricoh’s high performance, quick drying AR latex inks. Vinyl Decals Direct who moved to new larger premises with better access as part of a planned expansion of the business, asked Atlantic to supply a new print, cut and lamination package and specifically chose the Ricoh L4130 for the printer because of its ability to produce high quality prints, faster than most conventional solvent and latex printers. Steve Tanner MD of Vinyl Decals said “the installation of the Pro L4130 has opened up a number of new business opportunities for our business”. “The sharper images, vibrant colours with the ability to print quicker, without the need to de-gas is brilliant for our production deadlines” Vinyl Decals Direct is a leading UK design and print company, producing specialist vinyl labels and POS products as well as many other items. Their innovative ideas have won them several large customers, helping their business to grow. Keith Pratt of Atlantic said “the installation at Vinyl Decals Direct was an important development with our sales of the Pro L4100 Series latex printers. These printers offer those companies who are looking to install a latex printer a quality printer with Ricoh GEN5 high-speed print heads that last and last, with the added benefit that you don’t have to change print heads after just a few litres of ink as with most other latex printers”. “This added to the recent release of the new Ricoh AR fast drying latex inks gives the L4130 printer the ability of printing at speeds up to 50% faster than its nearest rivals” The AR inks reduce those ink smells you normally get from solvent inks and come supplied in 600ml bulk ink packs. The complete range of Ricoh Production printers inclusive of the C9100, C7100X, Latex L4100 are nationally available from Atlantic Tech Services, contact Tel. No: 01279 638 500 www.atlantic-ts.com

New Xerox Wi-Fi Colour Printers Most of the smaller printers and multifunction devices are serviceable, but with limited capabilities and reliability. They’re difficult to set up and don’t deliver what is needed today. But that is about to change. Xerox has introduced the Xerox Phaser® 6510 colour printer and Xerox WorkCentre® 6515 colour multifunction printer (MFP). Right out of the box, both offer easy setup and high-productivity tools such as two-sided, single-pass scanning. The MFP also features a five inch, app-based, tabletlike touchscreen user interface that offers scan preview, editing features, intuitive navigation and the ability to customise workflows. Ample paper capacity of up to 850-sheets and new Super-Fine EA toner deliver the type of performance typically seen with larger printers. The new Phaser 6510 colour printer and WorkCenter 6515 colour MFP provide connectivity from any device, enabling printing from a tablet or mobile phone if staff are working on-the-go. This feature eliminates the need to forward documents for printing. Results that attract attention — Advancements in Xerox’s new Super-Fine EA toner — debuting in the Phaser 6510 colour printer and WorkCentre 6515 colour MFP — create more accurate and detailed print jobs. OKI’s new printers portfolio OKI Systems UK has launched a new range of colour printers and multifunction printers (MFPs). The range is set to transform the way printers are used within businesses of every size — from small printers to large enterprises. “The new portfolio is designed to change perceptions of what a printer can do. We are encouraging customers to take a fresh look at the potential of these affordable devices to help them save time and money and enhance productivity. They can also help develop a streamlined and secure document workflow and management system,” says Andrew Hall, marketing manager, OKI Systems UK. “This launch marks a major renewal of our colour product range, opening up new market possibilities but also strengthening our core market provision,” says Hall. “It makes big business capability available to every size of organisation and adds even more functionality as standard across the range to improve connectivity, security and ease of use.” Set-up, use and maintenance of the printers is simplified and video guidance is available for installation and changing consumables. Printers that do it all – exceptional colour, smart functionality The new range begins with the affordable C332dn and MC363dn – which alongside outstanding ProQ2400 print quality; offer the fastest speeds for their class on the market. The MC363dn provides duplex copying, faxing, scanning and printing. Businesses looking for accelerated growth through should consider the new C542dn and the multifunction MC573 which open up the world of touch-screen technology and smart printing to this price range. Their customisable 7” screen and OKI’s smart extendable platform (sXP) enable connection to an existing pull printing fleet or access to document management software, at no extra cost. Both boast a powerful new engine resulting in speeds of 30/30 ppm and 1200 x 1200 dpi print quality. Solutions for every industry
OKI’s open platform sXP and integrated SENDYS Explorer software means its smart MFPs are ideal for enabling digital workflows. Small footprint MFPs enable quick and easy scanning of all types of documents, at the point of creation, for example in a clinical setting or at the point of sale within retail. HIGH VOLUME COLOUR FOR BUSY WORKGROUPS — The C612dn and C712dn in the upper end of the range combine fast production of high-level output with reliability and robust security and also a surprisingly low cost of ownership. The portfolio also includes A3 digital LED printers such as the C823/833/843 with the smallest footprint on the market. Thanks to OKI’s digital LED technology and HD Colour output, the C800 Series delivers outstanding print quality particularly saturated colours and finer details on an unrivalled range of media, perfect for creative businesses. www.oki.co.uk

The brand new A2 Mimaki UJF-6042 MkII offers a number of superior features over its highly successful predecessor, such as increased productivity with print speeds 20% faster than before and exceptional print quality, as Hybrid’s National Sales Manager for Industrial Products, Stuart Cole describes; “We’re delighted to announce the installation of this exciting new product in our showroom in South Cheshire and are really looking forward to providing demonstrations to all interested parties. The UJF series has been hugely popular since its launch in 2009 and now we can see that Mimaki, true to form, has looked at the expanding needs of both the sign and graphics and the manufacturing industries and produced a model that exceeds expectations.” The UJF-6042 MkII was launched in September along with the smaller UJF-3042
MkII, which replaces the UJF-3042HG, with both the new models printing thicknesses up to 153mm. Their compatibility with a range of Mimaki’s versatile UV inksets, including LUS-120 with flexibility up to 170% to deliver to a plethora of applications and LUS-150 with superior adhesion for outdoor purposes, makes them appealing to several different sectors. The new MkII printers will sit alongside
Mimaki’s other offerings in the UJF series; the affordable entry-level UJF-3042FX that has seen copious installations across the UK and Ireland over the last seven years, and the illustrious UJF-7151plus which gives ondemand printing of the very highest quality at industrial production level. “We want to provide people with the opportunity to have a holistic overview of Mimaki’s UJF Series and its capabilities all within the comfort of our showroom,” continues Cole. “Installation of the UJF-3042 MkII is expected shortly, meaning we will be able to demonstrate a wide selection of direct-to-object applications with a variety of ink types under one roof, giving print companies the ideal opportunity to get acquainted with this superb range of small format flatbed printers.” Customers can arrange a demonstration of the new UJF-6042 MkII, or any of Mimaki’s other products at Hybrid’s showroom by telephoning 01270 501900. Sign & Digital UK’s Promotions website
Sign & Digital UK, the trade exhibition for the sign making, display solutions and digital printing industry, launched a new online promotion in November, ahead of the 2017 show. The time-limited website brought together a range of special offers from industry suppliers and manufacturers, allowing visitors to select products they are interested in and submit their contact details directly to the host company. For industry suppliers and manufacturers this new initiative offered them a unique opportunity outside of the normal show marketing campaign to put their brand and products in front of a relevant and engaged audience of thousands of industry professionals. For visitors, it offers the opportunity to see some of the latest promotions on one easy to
navigate website and request further information about these products. Product categories on the website included exterior & interior signage, finishing equipment, inks, sublimation and sign fixings & tools. In addition, visitors could see promotions on textile printing equipment and wide format digital printers. Rudi Blackett, event director for Sign & Digital UK, said: “The idea for this new promotion came about from discussions on how to offer our visitors access to the best products and services from leading suppliers outside of the three-day exhibition each year. “We think this new website is pretty unique in our industry. It will be promoted extensively to our audience of show visitors and prospects. We see this autumn launch as just the beginning of something that we will build upon over time — giving buyers access to the huge range of innovative products and services that the industry has to offer and suppliers the opportunity to keep their brand at the front of the customer’s mind throughout the year.” View the Autumn Product Promotions website at http://productpromotions.signuk.com/ Visit Sign & Digital UK: www.signuk.com
Printwear & Promotion LIVE! 2017 is on the move Having smashed its 5,000 visitor target two years in a row, the 28th edition of the UK’s only dedicated event for the UK garment decoration industry will take place in Hall 20 at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham from Sunday 26th February to Tuesday 28th February. Event director, Tony Gardner, explains: “The printwear market is a very upbeat and optimistic place to be at the moment. The substantial growth of the show over the last four to five years now means that we need to move into a bigger hall, thus Hall 20 at the NEC in Birmingham will be our new home next year.” Exhibitors have already taken an extra 200sq m of space, which means that printers (screen, transfer and digital), embroiderers, promotional product distributors and retailers will have even more to see in 2017, from new decoration equipment to all the latest clothing lines. In addition to finding out what’s new from exhibitors, visitors will also have the opportunity to boost their skills, knowledge – and eventually their bottom line – by making the most of the many feature areas at the show, including: An all new line-up of speakers and topics in the Seminar Suite. THE SCREEN PRINT WORKSHOP: returning for a second year, the programme will cover a range of topics for beginners and experts alike. THE FASHION SHOWS, SPONSORED BY REGATTA: taking place three times daily, showcasing the latest in printwear styles. THE BAG & HEADWEAR DECORATION ADVICE STAND: providing advice on how to decorate those tricky items. Follow the P&P Show on Twitter @pandplive for updates. www.printwearandpromotionlive.co.uk

PIXEL PROPHET
NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS It must be over ten years ago Martin Christie based this column around the theme of joined-up thinking: the logic being that there was a direct link in digital workflow between image capture, manipulation and print. At the time, it was Epson who had joined up the dots, having a small range of digital cameras along with their scanners and printers. They even had the foresight to introduce an image storage device which was portable to fill the gap between memory card capacity at the time and download options. You could not only save images to the reader, but see what you had saved, enabling you to clear the camera card on-the-go.
[S]
ince then card capacity has increased dramatically, and the price of memory has dropped, making the once useful P-series of viewers redundant. But it was a good example of a manufacturer reading market demand, literally, and filling a short-term gap. Canon, with a much larger heritage of cameras and lenses, has had much more reason to combine digital photography with their wide range of printers, and yet have been noticeably slow to showcase their extensive expertise as a complete package. Perhaps the way large companies are structured accounts for this reluctance, and while their print machines have been much more in evidence at photographic shows, you would struggle to find a camera at a print show. All credit then to Digital Photo Solutions for pulling it all together in November in Canon’s own showroom in Holborn, London. Admittedly it was a more exclusive trade event than those previously hosted by Canon, and before them Nikon, at this time of year, but with informal seminars and one-to-one demonstrations it was an informative and friendly occasion, including input from lighting specialists Bowens, and graphics tablet specialist Wacom. The latter prompted me to dig out an old tablet I bought some years ago and haven’t used for a while, and though it doesn’t have all of the whistles
and bells of the latest models, it does make it easier working with images in Photoshop CC. As the possibilities of subtle editing of images has vastly improved with new tools and brushes, so the advantages of the tablet over the mouse become apparent. Apart from the flexibility of the device, getting away from the constraints of the mousemat, Wacom point out that it considerably reduces the chance of repetitive strain injury by being much more friendly to the operation of hand and wrist. Entry level tablets start at under a hundred pounds and the top of the range ones are over two thousand. You may not be familiar with the name Bowens, but if you were a studio photographer it would be as traditional as roast beef. Like many British institutions, it has had a few difficult transformations from analogue to digital, but looks to be on the right track with a sleek new range despite the strength of the opposition in the professional flash market. Accurate control of lighting is as vital with digital imaging as it ever was with film, and contrary to those who swear they can sort it out on the computer afterwards. If you can capture a good image then you can turn it into a great one with creative editing. A poor image will always be so whatever you try and do with it, which is why we struggle with so much of the customer content brought to the print shop counter. That’s also why a lighting company has a place, along with cameras, at an ostensibly digital print event. Another box ticked. The reason we introduced a digital imaging column in Copy Shop News (February 2000) was recognising the importance of understanding pixel-based files which would rapidly become the standard source of the printed image. Looking back at the archive, I see my first paragraph started with the question “what has digital photography to do with a copy shop, surely that’s for the high street specialist?” As we now know most of the high street outlets have gone, and we are faced with a mountain of digital
images produced by all manner of devices. The convenience of the instant images has meant that they can now be included in almost every file to be printed, and usually are, whether direct from camera or downloaded from another source. Regardless of where they come from, the issues are the same — resolving input resolution versus output size, colour and sharpness. With film it was clear cut — the negative was a set size, and whether the subject was in focus and clear, or exposed correctly and the right colour and density, was also perfectly obvious, not an object for debate. With a digital file it’s far more contentious. There is the simple guide of resolution which is the measure of the actual number of pixels in a picture. But this is purely a guide and takes no account of whether the subject is actually sharp, or whether there are sufficient numbers of pixels of different colours to make up the necessary tonal range required for printing. With conventional film there is a relatively seamless transition between one colour and another. With digital there is a very definite break between the pixels of one colour and another, and the fewer the pixels, the more definite that divide will be. The fewer the pixels the harder it will be to blend any particular colour, or manipulate the image in any way. The smarter portable devices get, the harder it is for the average user to know or understand the number of pixels in an image, or comprehend the difference in the quantity needed to project a picture on a high resolution screen and the dimensions to fill all the dots on a hard copy print. Strictly speaking, an A4 landscape image at 300ppi demands 3500x2500 pixels and so on proportionately on scale. This is about the best file size taken by a fairly good digital camera, or twice the best size of a very good phone camera. The actual megapixel count of a camera is very deceptive as the performance of the lens and the processor all contribute to the output, and that’s before even taking account of the clarity of the
Quick Print Pro • Digital Imaging
December 2016-January 2017
content, or its colour composition. Obviously if we stuck to the strict guidelines very few things submitted would ever get printed so it’s a compromise to get anything out at all. More often it’s a compromise between the customer’s expectations, and the hard reality on paper. As a general rule of thumb, a decent digital file will go up twice, and possibly four times the original, but that is dependent on the quality of the original, and the acceptable appearance of the printed image. An A4 therefore really needs about 1000pixels, shortest edge, to be in with a reasonable chance of success. To illustrate how important clarity is, compared to the basic statistics, I’m using a studio image I shot recently for a make-up artist and her model where the importance was in the detail as much as the overall impact of the headshot. This is achieved by the use of powerful studio flash lighting, diffused to reduce shadows on the face, but very close to the subject, and slightly to the side for dramatic effect. For the technical minded, the camera is a 30 megapixel DSLR with a high resolution F3.5 18-200mm lens, shot at F10 and 1/80 sec at ISO100. Shot originally in RAW it produces a digital file 4320 x 6480 which equates to an image 35x55cm at 300ppi. So that not only produces a pretty awesome print at same size, but would easily go to A0 and if we apply the rule of four, bigger still. But then you could have an inferior image with the same number of pixels that would still look rubbish at A4! Incidentally, I have done very little post processing on the image taken from camera, other than convert the original RAW into a JPG for print (Deano: then at magazine production, we converted the untouched image to CMYK and saved as binary coded EPS for good PDF data compression ahead of pre-press). Mostly, I have applied a little punch and contrast as large digital camera files tend to look a little flat on screen. This is partly why purists say they don’t have the depth of image of conventional film, but that is as much down to the method of printing rather than shooting. A digital inkjet print with pigment inks, as opposed to dyes, will always look a bit two dimensional as the pigments lie on the surface rather than be embedded within. As a photographer, printing for the general customer can be quite soul destroying at times, handling the regular diet of a day-to-day print shop. I often point out, when visiting exhibitions and launches, that the quality of the printers, inks and media is not in doubt. It’s the quality of the
input that introduces a reality check. Last time I went to Canon’s London showroom I met, and was encouraged by a talk by top photographer Clive Booth, who pointed out the obvious that a quality print was the ultimate test of the integrity of a digital image. Although Clive wasn’t there this time, I was pleased to see both Canon and Digital Photo Solutions singing from the same

songbook and urging other photographers to get out there and get printing. And as a print shop we should be reaching out to all those potential customers who are going to get a camera — any type of camera — for Christmas. If you need further inspiration have a look at Clive’s recent work with Aston Martin. http://clivebooth.com/aston-martin-by-hackett/

The Premier choice – Think Multicopy Available exclusively from The Premier Paper Group, the UK’s largest independent paper merchant, Multicopy is more than just a paper. Suitable for a wide a variety of print applications and available in a variety of sizes and weights, its adaptability and high performance levels all combine to make Multicopy something more than just a paper, it’s the Premier choice. PERFORMANCE — Almost any blank sheet of paper looks white, clean and inviting. Some qualities even have a smoother surface or offer a brighter white tone but at a glance they can all look quite similar. That is until you start printing. With MultiCopy it’s all about performance, with its smooth surface, high brightness and superb runnability, Multicopy produces perfect print results time after time. So there’s no thinking to be done. You simply just have to use Multicopy and print. MULTIFUNCTIONAL — MultiCopy is a multifunctional paper, with the adaptability to work equally well for both photocopying and litho printing applications. With its superb printability, excellent results can be produced in both colour and black and white print. MultiCopy is perfect for all types of print job, from presentations, newsletters and invoices, through to menus and brochures. Multicopy can handle both images and graphics with ease and is great for text. RELIABILITY — Many papers say that they are reliable, but with MultiCopy, as with its other qualities, it’s different. Multicopy never jams. With Multicopy every sheet of paper is vacuumed, so that there is no dust left in your printer. Dust can cause sheets of paper to slide and get stuck, but with Multicopy, there’s no dust – so no jams. In addition, every batch of Multicopy is tested for its print quality and runnability. By going this far in the production process, you can be sure of a reliable print, time after time. Runnability, as with reliability is important. MultiCopy flows through your machine without any problems or jams, saving you both time and money and providing a stress free end result. COLORLOK® — Every pack of MultiCopy carries the ColorLok Technology label, which tells you that Multicopy delivers on its promises. The ColorLok technology defines how the paper interacts with printing. The pigments in the ink are retained on the surface of the paper, while the body of the paper rapidly absorbs the fluid. This results in improved opacity for coloured and black print, together with a shorter drying time. This provides almost dry prints straight out of the printer, with no smears or blurs. To learn more about ColorLok®, please visit www.colorlok.com BLACK OR COLOUR — With its ColorLok technology guarantee, when colours land on the surface of each Multicopy sheet they are lifted to a new level, providing vivid images and powerful impressions; time after time, on every print. With a perfectly finished print surface, your black print stays powerful, whilst the surface ink adhesion creates an undiluted, dense and intense darkness. Graphics and images gain depth and clarity, and together with any printed text, they remain crisp and sharp, helping to increase the power of your printed message. PRE-PRINT — MultiCopy has been developed to give an outstanding performance on electronic printing processes and this makes it especially suitable for pre-print applications. With its even surface, high level of whiteness and excellent opacity, MultiCopy is one of the most reliable pre-print papers on the market. You can use MultiCopy for a variety of applications, from letterheads and invoices to forms and information sheets. When your customers put it into their printers and copiers, you can be confident that it will give first class, trouble free results, time after time.

ENVIRONMENTAL — All MultiCopy sheets are packaged in an attractive green wrapper for a particular reason. This is to show and underline Multicopy’s green commitment to the world. The array of ecolabels that adorn each pack are testament to MultiCopy’s environmental credentials – The Nordic Swan, the EU Flower, Totally Chlorine Free (TCF) and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). This, coupled with the mill’s own ISO 14001 and EMAS certification adds further to Multicopy’s environmental profile. Multicopy is produced at Stora Enso’s ground-breaking, environmentally friendly Nymolla integrated mill in Sweden, where pulp and paper is produced on the same site minimising the impact of distribution on the environment. In addition the surplus heat from the mill supplies the district heating network (around 3,000 homes). Thereby providing fresh air, cleaner water and sustainable energy, underlining the fact that Multicopy is so much more than just paper! As MultiCopy is TCF, a much cleaner process is used in its manufacturing to make MultiCopy white. Together with its environmental credentials of The Nordic Ecolabel, the EU Ecolabel and FSC certifications, Multicopy users can be ensured that the pulp used in its manufacture is sourced from sustainably managed forests. So by selecting Multicopy, you can be sure that your environmental footprint is not treading on anyone’s toes! Historically print shops, with a duty of care to customer artwork and not wanting to have print flow interrupted, have been reluctant to open up a Wi-Fi service from their existing router. Fortunately we have been recommended to Colin Howse and Konnectfi who can split your broadband in the easiest of manners. By adding another router to your single source broadband suppliers existing hub, you can effectively have two separate SSIDs. Your existing is secure and your new address for customer free Wi-Fi with guest internet access through a login panel is definitely a good customer retention step, let alone attracting new ones. Now add the really clever big brother stuff, rather than evict potential customers, glean some future marketing potential info on all your logins. These days everyone is used to social marketing and receiving vouchers and incentives. The system collects login data either email, or Facebook etc. Have you received vouchers from a coffee shop as you used their free Wi-Fi? Well now copy shops can do the same. We have trialled this as talk is easy and hands on much better; to this end we have secured a 21-day free trial for all QPP readers.

TheMagicTouch At the recent EuroTrophex in Amsterdam TheMagicTouch were proud recipients of the prestigious “Best Image Transfer Product of 2016” award based on an application using the latest in white-toner technology. The company introduced their new RST9.1 transfer paper which enables full colour imaging onto a wide range of non-fabric products and substrates with rough surfaces, including untreated wood, slate, cork, ceramics, plastics, MDF and lots more. The award winning entry consisted of a personalised Fender Telecaster Guitar decorated using the RST9.1 transfer paper which was printed using the TMT/ OKi white toner printer. The transfer was applied to the body of the guitar using a traditional swing head heat press and then finished with six layers of clear resin varnish to match the factory original finish. In addition a selection of guitar picks were also included decorated with unique personalised designs and again printed using TheMagicTouch image transfer process.
The original design is from a photograph featuring the view from “Dukes Bar” at the Outrigger Hotel in Hawaii where the guitar is to be auctioned in December helping to raise money towards local charities. The event will be hosted by Hawaii’s number one rock star Henry Kapono. For further information of the new RST9.1 or any of the other transfer applications contact sales@themagictouch.co.uk www.themagictouch.co.uk
Digital money can be made without print! Now that is something I thought I would never be saying, as we always prefer hard copy proper print. Keeping up with how our customers run, in this instance, their accounts department can be very beneficial. When answering our customers enquiries to e-invoicing it can be a buying signal for design and updating real tactile print too. Neopost offer a cloud based multi-channel invoicing solution that works with existing artwork or your re-vamped design. Netsend plugs into existing accounts packages for print and post invoices complimented by PDF email or EDI XML feeds. Distribution is by post, email by attachment or linked portal, FTP or yes if you can remember, Fax. None of this should create fear in us quick print pros as we keep the design and hard copy updates. Not forgetting that many a business still likes to pay with a paper statement and mark in red pen and file in a folder ready for the next vat visit. Some of our stand visitors at The Print Show were talking about the opportunities in design for e-stationery, apparently when re-designing for e-invoicing some of their customers had their whole printed stationery designs updated. Answering yes to customer digital media enquiries is key to keeping their print in our hands. Download the white paper at: http://bit.ly/e-invoice-white-paper

Nettl chicken and egg Research into selling a website design build and host service is proceeding at a good speed. I have discovered Nettl who have prompted me to update one of my favourite talking our industry up phrases. “Quick printers are first out of any down turn or business recession as we touch all new businesses as they all have to start with a business card”. I guess after 30 years this needs updating as now not entirely true. Consider what text we require to promote all these new start up businesses? There you have it; email to match website address and the website needs to be built, be live and functional. Yes they will all require print to promote the website, brochures, contact gathering but we are now in a chicken and egg scenario. I am convinced that our print industry needs to skill up to produce websites. The Nettl system allows this by utilising our existing experience in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop. No requirement to write code,

as this is a co-operative knowledge share opportunity to publish websites using our existing in-house skill set. Hoorah, I have been looking for this for some time so now am very excited to take the test drive, or rather my daughter Becky as she has the design skill set in place. QPP are road testing this project with specific goals in mind; Training new skills for our industry, winning new business for printers, making them more sustainable and importantly securing existing business. If our industry says no to building a website the website industry will attract all the following print too. The training and courses offered look very worthwhile to our part of the industry. Helping print businesses expand while helping every type of new business. The proof will be shared in our on going case study, “Where are you on your web journey so far and do you need help?” Watch this space. Nettl.com
First Class Quality at Economy Prices This is really helpful for us 36,000 quick print pros. Printing on board is rarely produced in house by our 6600 print shops and we have said no so often or produced a laminate image stuck to something that will ensure we have lost these enquiries forever... Wouldn’t it be better to lead by example and produce some samples with say end user prices on for us all to show off to our eight million end users? Correx £27/ m2, Foamex 3mm £27/m2, Foamex 5mm £29/m2, Dibond £41m2 Purchasing at trade at a discount of £11 per
square metre across the board, ha clever that, I always fancied making a living treading the boards! So how about this for a top QPP reader special price for a sample set example, like a Builders Board, event notice and a print shop price list. Three samples, set deal or go ‘a la carte.’ We suggest A2 Correx, A1 5mm Foamex and a A3 Dibond end user price list. There is a special offer for this POS point of sale, even better than the trade pricing in the image. Launching a new print division for under £50 is a no brainer. This is a top 2017 New Year’s Resolution. Our thanks to James at Tradeprint who has recently reduced trade print prices and ordered a new easy order interface web interface. End user artwork to cover prices and all the media and sizes, is available free to QPP readers. Requestyourstoday:GoinLarge@QuickPrintPro.co.uk

Weather advice
A man got lost in his car during a snow storm. He remembered something he had read earlier: “If you ever get stuck in a snow storm, wait for a snow plough and follow it.” Pretty soon a snow plough came by, and he followed it for about 45 minutes. Finally the driver of the truck got out and asked the man what he was doing. He explained that he had read somewhere that if he ever got stuck in the snow, to follow a plough. The driver nodded and said, “Well, I’m done with the supermarket car park now you can follow me over to B&Q.”
Happy Meal
A man and his wife are dining at a table in a plush restaurant, and the husband keeps staring at a drunken lady swigging her drink as she sits alone at a nearby table. The wife asks, “Do you know her?” “Yes,” sighs the husband, “she’s my ex-girlfriend. I understand she took to drinking right after we split up seven years ago, and I hear she hasn’t been sober since.”
“My Goodness” says the wife. “Who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?
Jobs worth
A salesman dropped in to see a business customer. Not a soul was in the office except a big dog emptying wastebaskets. The salesman stared at the animal, wondering if his imagination could be playing tricks on him. The dog looked up and said, “Don’t be surprised. This is just part of my job.” “Incredible!” exclaimed the man. “I can’t believe it! Does your boss know what a prize he has in you? An animal that can talk!” “No, no,” pleaded the dog. “Please don’t! If that man finds out I can talk, he’ll make me answer the phone as well!”
Feeling Nervous
Patient 1: “Why did you run away from the operation table?” Patient 2: “The nurse was repeatedly saying ‘don’t get nervous’, ‘don’t be afraid’, ‘be strong’, ‘this is a small operation only’, things like that.” Patient 1: “So what was wrong in that? Why were you so afraid?” Patient 2: “She was talking to the surgeon!”
The Cotton Allergy
I had an uncle who was allergic to cotton... He got some pills for the condition but couldn’t get them out of the bottle.
Nappies
After a young couple brought their new baby home, the wife suggested that her husband should try his hand at changing nappies. “I’m busy,” he said, “I’ll do the next one.” The next time came around and she asked again. The husband looked puzzled. “Oh! I didn’t mean the next nappy. I meant the next baby.”
Little Johnny and the Flies
Teacher: If there are seven flies and I hit one with a ruler, how many are left? Little Johnny: Just the squashed one.
Pedantic partner
A married couple were vacationing in Hawaii and disagreed on the correct pronunciation of the state name. He said it was Hawaii and his wife said it was Havaii. They stopped a man on the street to ask his opinion. He said the correct pronunciation was Havaii. The man’s wife was delighted and thanked the man. The man said, “You’re velcome.”
Well, He Wanted to Know
After years of wondering why he didn’t look like his younger sister or brother, a young man finally got up the nerve to ask his mother if he was adopted. “Yes, you were son,” his mother said as she started to cry softly. “But it didn’t work out and they brought you back.”
School report
A police officer arrives at the scene of an accident, in which a car smashed into a tree. The cop rushes over to the vehicle and asks the driver, “Are you seriously hurt?” “How should I know?” the man answers, “I’m not a lawyer!”
A high-school student came home from school seeming rather depressed. “What’s the matter son?” asked his mother. “Aw, gee,” said the boy, “it’s my marks. They’re all wet.” “What do you mean, ‘all wet’?” she asks. “I mean,” he replied, “well below C-level.”
Alligator Shoes
Miracle management
Both Sides Of The Law
A young blonde saleslady was on holiday in the depths of Louisiana. She wanted a pair of genuine alligator shoes in the worst way, but was very reluctant to pay the high prices the local vendors were asking. After becoming very frustrated with the “no haggle” attitude of one of the shopkeepers, the blonde shouted, “Maybe I’ll just go out and catch my own alligator so I can get a pair of shoes at a reasonable price!” The shopkeeper said, “By all means, be my guest. Maybe you’ll have luck and catch yourself a big one!” Determined, the blonde turned and headed for the swamps, set on catching herself an alligator. Later in the day, the shopkeeper is driving home, when he spots the young woman standing waist deep in the water, shotgun in hand. Just then, he sees a huge nine foot alligator swimming quickly toward her. She takes aim, kills the creature, and with a great deal of effort hauls it on to the swamp bank. Laying nearby were several more of the dead creatures. The shopkeeper watches in amazement. Just then the blonde flips the alligator on its back, and frustrated, shouts out, “Rats, this one isn’t wearing any shoes either!”
“Do you believe in life after death?” the boss asked one of his employees. “Yes, sir,” the clerk replied. “That’s good,” the boss said. “After you left early yesterday to go to your grandmother’s funeral, she stopped in to see you.”
Early politics
A young girl asked her father if all fairy tales begin with “Once Upon A Time?” “No,” he replied. “A whole lot of them begin with, If elected, I promise...”
Stranded
Ed finally decides to take a vacation. He books himself on a Caribbean cruise and proceeds to have the time of his life, until the boat sank. He found himself swept up on the shore of an island with no other people, no supplies... nothing. Only bananas and coconuts. After about four months, he is lying on the beach one day when the most gorgeous woman he has ever seen rows up to him. In disbelief, he asks her, “Where did you come from? How did you get here?” “I rowed from the other side of the island,” she says. “I landed here when my cruise ship sank.” “Amazing,” he says. “You were really lucky to have a rowboat wash up with you.”

“Oh, this?” replies the woman. “I made the rowboat out of raw material I found on the island; the oars were whittled from gum tree branches; I wove the bottom from palm branches; and the sides and stern came from a eucalyptus tree.” “But-but, that’s impossible,” stutters Ed. “You had no tools or hardware. How did you manage?” “Oh, that was no problem,” replies the woman. “On the south side of the island, there is a very unusual strata of alluvial rock exposed. I found if I fired it to a certain temperature in my kiln, it melted into forgeable ductile iron. I used that for tools and used the tools to make the hardware.” Ed is stunned. “Let’s row over to my place,” she says. After a few minutes of rowing, she docks the boat at a small wharf. As Ed looks onto shore, he nearly falls out of the boat. Before him is a stone walk leading to an exquisite bungalow painted in blue and white. While the woman ties up the rowboat with an expertly woven hemp rope, he could only stare ahead, dumbstruck. As they walk into the house, she says casually, “It’s not much, but I call it home. Sit down please; would you like to have a drink?” “No, no thank you,” he says, still dazed. “Can’t take any more coconut juice.” “It’s not coconut juice,” the woman replies. “I have a still. How about a Pina Colada?” Trying to hide his continued amazement, he accepts, and they sit down on her couch to talk.
A man in a cinema notices what looks like a baby giraffe sitting next to him.
After they have exchanged their stories, the woman announces, “I’m going to slip into something more comfortable. Would you like to take a shower and shave? There is a razor upstairs in the cabinet in the bathroom.” No longer questioning anything, Ed goes into the bathroom. There, in the cabinet, is a razor made from a bone handle. Two shells honed to a hollow ground edge are fastened on to its end inside of a swivel mechanism. “WOW! This woman is amazing,” he muses, “What next?” When he returns, she greets him wearing nothing but vines-strategically positioned-and smelling faintly of gardenias. She beckons for him to sit down next to her. “Tell me,” she begins suggestively, slithering closer to him, “We’ve been out here for a really long time. You’ve been lonely. There’s something I’m sure you really feel like doing right now, something you’ve been longing for all these months. You know...” She stares into his eyes. He can’t believe what he’s hearing: “You mean---”, he swallows excitedly, “I can check my e-mail from here...?”
The husband replies, “I don’t know. Some guy who wanted to know if the coast was clear.”
Time Out
A wealthy ninety year old tycoon is meeting with is financial advisor. The advisor is very excited and tells the old man. “ I just found out about an investment I can make for you which will double your money in just five years!” “Five years? Are you kidding?” exclaims the old man. “At my age, I don’t even buy green bananas!” Santa’s Flight Inspection A flight inspector goes to check out Santa. They meet, and Santa shows him the fully loaded sleigh. The inspector checks out the equipment, the load balance, etc. “Everything’s looking good, Mr. Claus, so it’s time we move on to the flight test.” They board the sleigh. “Why are you carrying a shotgun?” asks Santa. The inspector replies, “In this test, you’re going to lose an engine on take off.
Baby Bear
It was two o’clock in the morning and a husband and wife were asleep, when suddenly the phone rang. The husband picked up the phone and said, “Hello? (Pause as he listens.) How the heck do I know? What am I, the weather man?” and promptly slammed the phone down. His wife rolls over and asks, “Who was that?”
Mama bear, papa bear, and baby bear were having a great time chasing vacationers in a car as they were visiting Yellowstone National Park. “Daddy?” “Yes, Baby Bear?” “I think we could be doing a better job of scaring these vacationers.” “But Baby Bear,” Mama Bear injected. “What more can we do?” “Maybe we’d have more of an effect on them if we got out of this car and started chasing them on all fours!”
“Are you a baby giraffe?” asked the man.
He added,“What are you doing at the movies?”
