Print Scotland seeks to plug the succession gap Scotland’s printing sector employs 6,000 people, and has been a powerhouse of Scottish industry, with participants ranging from small scale digital businesses, to whisky label printers, commercial colour printers and on to the country’s newspapers and thriving book printing industries. But experts say the industry will face a succession gap as soon as 2030. Print Scotland, the trade association and voice of Scotland’s graphic communication industry, is looking to plug that gap with the provision of modern apprenticeship opportunities for members — those in the manufacturing side of the print industry— and associate members – which supply the manufacturers. Garry Richmond, who was appointed Print Scotland Director last year, said: “With all the changes in technology, print has been seen as something of a sunset industry. But nothing could be further from the truth. Print is just another communication platform and a highly effective one, and we aim to help our members with apprentice recruitment, a cogent voice in the corridors of power, genuine cost saving benefits, professional guidance on compliance with legislation and much more.” Print Scotland has seen new members signing up in unprecedented numbers for recent times since Garry launched its recruitment campaign last year; from international giant Kodak, one of its largest associate members, to Glasgow-based PR Print, said to be the most environmentally astute business in the print industry, and which boasts that it delivers printing solutions without the carbon footprint. Other new members include Inchinnan-based ACA Print Finishing and Packaging Solutions, Scotland’s largest print finishing company,
which provides high end finishing processes to print products including foiling, varnishing and book binding, and last year underwent a change of ownership. Garry said: “We have arrested the fall in print-related business member numbers, and are looking forward now to enrolling more members, representing their interests at the highest levels of government decision-making, and placing greater numbers of Modern Apprentices with our members. “Our apprenticeship opportunity programmes are open to non-members, but we are encouraging everyone in Scotland’s graphic
Get into the festive spirit at Carols for Printers
Once again the festive season is upon us and it’s time to come together for the Christmas Carol Service for printers, hosted by the BPIF, The Printing Charity, Stationers and Newspaper Makers Company, St Bride Foundation and Trade Union Unite. The Carol Service will take place at 6pm on 12 December at St Brides Church, Fleet Street, in London. Designed by Sir Christopher Wren in 1672, the church has long been associated with journalists and newspapers, making it a fitting location for our annual carol service. The congregation and St Bride’s choir will sing both traditional and modern versions of Christmas carols. The choir has been established since 1957, the same year that the 4000-pipe organ was

This year, after the carol service you are invited to join the BPIF at St Bride Foundation for some festive drinks and nibbles from 7pm until 9pm. The event will be a great opportunity for networking with others in the industry and of course celebrating Christmas. Why not make an evening of it and bring along your loved ones to join in the festivities. It is set to be a fantastic evening and will no doubt get everyone into the Christmas spirit, the BPIF look forward to seeing all of you there! Kall Kwik Boss raises £7k in charity challenge Nigel Toplis, managing director of Kall Kwik, cycled 540k from Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) to Angkor Wat (Cambodia), raising £7,000 for charity WellChild. The trek was a true endurance challenge. Nigel cycled up to 100k per day in temperatures of 90 degrees at 90 percent humidity. He encountered many difficulties on the ride, such as a monsoon thunderstorm which struck when he was still 10k from the finishing point for that day. Nigel was part of a team of ten cyclists supported by an experienced ground crew. He believes their success was down to strong team dynamics, good communication and a positive attitude. “I’ve taken part in endurance challenges before, but this trek was really tough,” says Nigel. “Even though we’d all trained beforehand, nothing could prepare you for some of the challenges we faced. However, this was an adventure that I’d made a decision to take part in. The children and families supported by WellChild are facing huge challenges every day. Their courage and resilience is truly inspiring, and I’d like to thank every one of my sponsors for their kind donations.” WellChild helps seriously ill children and their families throughout the UK as they deal with the consequences of complex conditions and exceptional health needs. Many of these children spend months or years in hospital because there is no support enabling them to leave. WellChild’s vision is to give them the best chance to thrive, at home with their families. The Bardon Group has been supporting WellChild for over a decade and Nigel’s previous endurance challenges have raised more than £50,000. In addition to the Vietnam-Cambodia bike ride, he has cycled across Cuba, climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and trekked through the Sahara and the Sumatran jungle. You can make a donation to WellChild via Nigel’s Just Giving page: www.justgiving. com/fundraising/nigel-toplis
CMYUK gives local charity a UTACK makeover The Shrewsbury Food Hub recently acquired a brand-new depot, enabling the charity to double the amount of free surplus food it supplies to local community groups. Also being used as a training base to expand the model across Shropshire, the new Hub was perfect in size, but plain in décor. Local business, CMYUK – independent suppliers of wideformat printers, cutters and materials – stood up to the mark and offered to decorate it for them with custom-made wallpaper showing the journey that surplus food takes, and reflecting the charity’s core values. Set up in 2016, the Food Hub collects surplus food from supermarkets and shares it between 32 community groups. Fitted by another local firm, Shelley Signs, everything was rushed through, designed and installed in time for the launch in
early November. Robin East, Group Director at CMYUK, says of the project: “It’s been a pleasure helping Katy and the team at the Food Hub. They now have a much brighter environment for the volunteers to work in. I wish them all the best.” CMYUK’s own brand, UTACK, was used to decorate the walls.
The thin and woven self-adhesive polyester fabric is easy to print and install, and removes without damage or residue. Katy Anderson, co-founder of the Shrewsbury Food Hub said “It’s been so heartwarming to have CMYUK come forward and offer so much time and all of the materials for free. The
place has been completely transformed. It’s the first thing people mention when they come in and it gives our volunteers a really cheery environment to do their sorting in. We cannot thank them enough.“ For more information about CMYUK, please visit www.cmyuk.com.

Midshire Tree-Mendous support for Francis House Office technology provider Midshire has been getting festive for local children’s charity Francis House, by building a Christmas tree entirely from office photocopier paper. Constructed using over 300 intricately layered reams of A4 and A3 office paper, the 6.ft 4 ‘tree’ equates to an entire year’s supply of paper for a business. Now in its 11th year, the charity’s annual ‘Festival of Christmas Trees’ will showcase trees adorned with seasonal decorations and gifts from companies, social clubs, and supporters of Francis House at the Lowry Outlet in Salford Quays. Group Marketing Manager at Midshire, Adrienne Topping talks about the inspiration behind the idea: “In previous years we’ve decorated our tree with CMYK coloured origami, this time we wanted to do something even more creative that reflected our business, and would be really useful to the winner. “The idea of donating a year’s supply of office paper to compliment the photocopying and printing equipment we supply, seemed appropriate. “No Midshire tree would be complete without some techy gadgets, so we added wireless Bluetooth mini-speakers, and some photocopier stress balls. Adrienne concludes: “We encourage businesses to dig deep and get involved, we’ll even deliver the paper to the highest bidder.” Opened by the late Princess Diana in 1991, Francis House hospice provides support to children and families across the North West with life threatening or life limiting illnesses. Midshire has been supporting Francis House for a number of years since it broke the world record for the longest football match back in 2013, raising £45,000.
Other organisations supporting charity with festive fervour include Yankee, the Al-Fayed Charitable Foundation, Manchester City and Manchester United Football Clubs, Disney, Sky, and the cast of Coronation Street. The Festival of Christmas Trees is located on the second floor of the Lowry Outlet, right next to the cinema. Midshire’s tree will be on display until December 10th, where it will be auctioned to the highest bidder, and all proceeds will go to Francis House. For further information please contact Adrienne Topping, Group Marketing Manager on 0161 494 3376, email adrienne@ midshiremarketing.co.uk. www.midshire.co.uk
The Stationers’ Company opens new archive The official opening of the Stationers’ Company’s new archive room and reading room took place on 10th November 2017, and represented a milestone in improving access to its unique and priceless archive, both for members of the Company and the general public. Thanks to the generosity of Liverymen Duncan Spence and Amy McKee, and additional funds from the Company, there is now a magnificent new facility for all to use including an archive room and a reading room. The whole complex is called the Tokefield Centre in commemoration of the then Clerk, George Tokefield, who in 1666 transported the Company’s records in a wheelbarrow out beyond the reach of the Great Fire of London thus saving them. Liveryman Sarah Mahurter, Manager, University Archives and Special Collections Centre at University of the Arts London, undertook the project management to relocate the historic archive from an inaccessible upstairs room to the oldest book warehouse building in London which forms one end of the Company’s garden. Workstreams were identified to ensure a successful planning
application with support from Historic England, to build the archive room with a climate controlled environment and to develop a reading room which could be effectively used by a diverse range of users, in line with national standards. Ruth Frendo, the Stationers’ Company archivist, said “The Stationers’ Archive is already known as a key resource to historians of the book trade. However, it also holds a wealth of records whose potential is yet to be explored. As custodians of the records we have inherited through the care and dedication of our forebears, we have a serious responsibility to maintain these documents for future exploration. Through the development of this, purpose-built storage facility, and a reading room which will provide unprecedented access to its archive, the Stationers’ Company is demonstrating that it is whole-heartedly embracing this responsibility. William Alden, Clerk to the Company said “Widening access to Stationers’ Hall for educational purposes is a critical objective of the Stationers’ Company. The opening of the Tokefield Centre marks the completion of
the first phase of a broader Hall development programme, which we hope to complete by 2023, the 350th anniversary of the building of the Hall.” For further information please contact: William Alden on clerk@stationers.org or on 020 7246 0980 www.stationers.org

Datalase / Parc develop inkless Photonic printing
DataLase, a leader in inline digital printing of products and packaging, and PARC, a Xerox company, have entered into a new strategic partnership and signed a lease agreement. The companies will work together to develop cutting-edge photonic printing solutions based on the DataLase awardwinning laser-reactive colour-change pigment technologies The deal will accelerate the development of new laser-based hardware solutions that are optimised for use with DataLase colour-change pigment technology to digitally print variable data on a variety of products and packaging. DataLase will collaborate with PARC to specifically advance its inkless multi-colour Infinity technology platform, and has signed a lease agreement to establish a pioneering development office and innovation suite to operate from inside the PARC facility in Silicon Valley, California. Andy Wragg, CEO at DataLase, said: “Working at PARC will give DataLase and our parent company, SATO, access to cutting-edge
technology facilities to develop new and unique photonic printing solutions, based on our latest colour change pigment technologies. We will also have access to other pioneering and innovative companies and technological advances that will extend our capability to deliver unique solutions that connect brand owners with consumers around the world.” By leveraging world-class research and expertise across multiple technologies, PARC provides breakthrough capabilities that very few organisations can deliver. Working with strategic partners to help develop innovation solutions, PARC helps take the risk out of deploying technologies and strategies that could revolutionise entire industries. The new multi-colour Infinity platform will revolutionise the way that brand owners can connect with consumers through products and packaging. Digital printing of variable data and the personalisation of products is a rapidly growing trend as consumers demand more individual relevance from brand driven marketing campaigns. Integrating printing at the point in the supply chain where it creates most value for the brand is a key challenge faced by the industry, but inkless solutions based on DataLase technology can meet these increasing demands. Applications for the variable printing of text, graphics, and barcodes on labels, flexible film, and folding cartons can all benefit from this unique solution. “PARC’s open innovation business model is a perfect fit for the DataLase team,” said Antonio Williams, Manager, Printing Innovation Portfolio at PARC. “We’re excited to have their team here at PARC collaborating with our researchers to develop the inkless multi-colour photonic print technology. DataLase is bringing a unique solution to market and we are looking forward to working together.” www.datalase.com • www.parc.com
Ricoh launch compact high speed inkjet platform Print services providers can produce profitably a wide range of applications from transactional print such as bills, statements and policy documents to books, direct mail and pharmaceutical leaflets with the new Ricoh Pro™ V20000 series continuous feed inkjet platform. The compact, versatile and simple to use family of systems brings competitive mono and colour production to existing users of continuous feed printers as well as sheet fed users who are looking to consolidate the output of multiple devices to a single machine. With a footprint of just 4.3 square metres, it can fit in to almost any production environment. Users with different volume requirements can benefit from the three versions being announced: the 75 metres per minute, 600 x 600 dpi mono Ricoh Pro V20000, the 150mpm, 600 x 600 dpi mono Ricoh Pro™ V20100 and the 75mpm, 600 x 600 dpi CMYK Ricoh Pro™ VC20000. An additional user benefit is that this family of inkjet printers will work with a wide variety of papers including the lightweight materials required in the pharmaceutical industry. In
addition, they are optimised to combine with inline finishing solutions where the ability to change speed to match the capability of each device helps to maximise production and minimise paper waste. Tim Taylor, Head of Continuous Feed Market, Commercial and Industrial Printing Group says: “The Pro V20000 platform is a great addition to our portfolio. It joins the Ricoh Pro™ VC40000, which was announced earlier this year, and Ricoh Pro™ VC60000 continuous feed inkjet printers, meaning we have a system that suits the production requirements of almost any operation.” He continues: “The easy to run systems also offer an upgrade path for existing tonerbased operations. The improved operational efficiency, increased running speeds and significantly lower running costs often mean one inkjet device can replace several ageing toner machines. “We are also excited by the number of additional markets it can help our clients competitively service when used in combination with Ricoh software. For example, it enables intelligent and efficient book production when
combined with our TotalFlow BatchBuilder software and, with a combination of FusionPro and Ricoh Process Director, we can provide a complete and secure pharmaceutical solution. “As with Ricoh’s complete family of inkjet and toner devices Pro V20000 users will benefit from our knowledgeable and responsive service and support network. It will help ensure clients develop all possible revenue streams to maximise their investment.” The Pro V20100 will be shown for the first time at Ricoh’s The Art of The New event, November 21 to 23, Ricoh’s Customer Experience Centre, Telford, UK. All three models will be available from Q1 in 2018. www.ricoh.co.uk

Scodix Ultra2 Pro Digital Enhancement Press with Foil Station
Scodix, a provider of digital enhancement solutions for the graphic arts industry has announced the launch of the Scodix Ultra2 Pro Digital Enhancement Press with Foil Station, the ultimate multi material system. Previously, the Scodix Ultra Pro system was the only digital enhancement press capable of producing nine different applications, on the largest variety of substrates and with all printing processes. Now the Scodix Ultra2 builds on that foundation further boosting flexibility, quality and productivity for customers A pioneer of the digital enhancement market, Scodix first introduced the Scodix S system in 2012, followed by the Scodix Ultra. Today, close to 300 Scodix systems are installed worldwide, serving the most demanding customers. The Scodix Ultra2, the new addition to the Scodix family of digital enhancement presses, was designed as the ultimate multi
material platform, enabling enhanced support for applications, substrates, and print processes. Users of the Scodix Ultra Pro will be able to upgrade to the Scodix Ultra2, starting in 2018. The Scodix Ultra2’s state-of-the-art design allows for broader flexibility, enhanced quality and increased productivity. The entire print engine has been changed to provide extensive flexibility, high accuracy of print and cost effectiveness, supported by fast switching between polymers, with improved print quality and superior material flow. The Scodix Ultra2 includes five ink tanks, allowing a comprehensive choice of enhancements, in one platform. A new adaptive LED process controls the curing process with improved accuracy, while the unique Scodix PAS™ (Pin Activate Secure) technology delivers superior enhancement with ultra-fine detail. Scodix CEO, Roy Porat comments: “Our aim at
Scodix is to continually support our customers to ‘enhance their competitive edge’. There is no polymer in the world that is suitable for all substrates, no drop behaves the same on all substrates or all printed material. Consequently, we have developed the Scodix Ultra2 Pro, alongside our variety of innovative polymers designed for different purposes, as a system which can deliver the ultimate results. This is essentially a multi-material platform.” Porat continues: “Expanded substrate offerings, the unparalleled nine different enhancement effects, as well compatibility with the largest variety of CMYK processes, confirms Scodix’ position as the market leader in digital enhancement. The first of the new releases is SUBLIMIS— an innovative range of coated backlit textiles for direct and transfer sublimation printing, as Soyang Europe’s Sales Director, Andrew Simmons comments; “SUBLIMIS is a revolutionary product with a long list of features and benefits, most notably that it successfully reduces the issue of ink migration giving backlit applications really punchy graphics and colours and the best possible white point.” SUBLIMIS is a coated woven polyester, available in widths up to 5m so is of interest to print providers servicing the retail and exhibition industry where large, continuous backlit prints are popular. It is non-stick, lightweight (making it desirable from a transport cost perspective) and provides
excellent light diffusion to give the wow factor to light box displays. Soyang Europe is also pleased to introduce ALTERRA, an eco-friendly backlit fabric woven with recycled fibres that performs in the same way as SENFA’s popular Decoprint Pearl, but uses less non-renewable resources. “ALTERRA is a coated polyester suitable for indoor backlit displays,” confirms Simmons. “Not only does it incorporate 65% recycled fibres into the manufacturing process, but its green credentials continue with it being PVC-free and suitable for more eco-friendly ink types such as UV and latex.” “ALTERRA was the recent winner of the SGIA Product of the Year award,” continues Simmons. “The material provides superior print quality and light diffusion which makes it an attractive choice for specifiers in retail, for example, who are required to minimise environmental impact without losing any of the impact of POS light box displays.”
Both SUBLIMIS and ALTERRA will be available from stock on next day delivery from Soyang Europe’s distribution centre. For further information regarding Soyang’s product portfolio visit www.soyang.co.uk or telephone 0161 7653400.

TheMagicTouch exclusive distributor for Duraluxe TheMagicTouch, under its DyeSubMagic sublimation brand has confirmed their appointment as exclusive distributors for the UK and Ireland for Duraluxe™ HD metal. This unique HD powder coated aluminium product offers UV resistance together with anti-graffiti properties delivering innovation for full colour outdoor signage as never seen before. Traditionally, full colour transfer decoration of aluminium panels printed using any sublimation ink has not been suitable or acceptable for outdoor use due to poor durability against the effects of UV, graffiti and weathering. TheMagicTouch in partnership with the manufacturer, Decoral Inc.,- leaders in powder coating technology for the past 30 years, introduce for the first time Duraluxe™ a new “double” coating process to the aluminium sublimation panels. The blank panels are printed in full colour using sublimation ink transfers and a suitable professional transfer heat press. The finished product comes with a certified minimum five year guarantee for use outdoors. Printed aluminium panels have proved very
popular for indoor use and are commonly manufactured using various liquid coating technologies but the market for outdoor signage demands certified UV protection which with liquid coatings has not been possible. After extensive research and development at Decoral’s Lab facility in Florida, USA, combined with certified accelerated weather testing to the ISO 11664-4 standard, Duraluxe™ has secured an unrivalled position with a real five year outdoor minimum guarantee. The panels also offer superb anti-graffiti qualities against inks and sprays. The aluminium panels are 1.2mm thick, available in various standard sizes up to 2.4m with HD imaging quality together with outdoor, scratch and chemical resistance. The unique patented “double” powder coating process also enables the panels to be trimmed and shaped easily avoiding any flaking or sharp edges. The Duraluxe™ panels are compatible with most recognised sublimation ink brands including Sawgrass, Jtec, Kiian, Sensient, STS and Epson. Duraluxe™ takes aluminium sublimation
panels to the next level with high-definition colours specifically designed to withstand years of exposure to sunlight and severe weather. Only Duraluxe™ sublimation panels combine the scratch-resistance and durability of powder coating with the depth and colour vibrancy of multi-layer imaging. Add to that, the patented anti-graffiti formulations and you get the most “Powderful” outdoor sublimation panels available on the planet. For further information contact sales@ themagictouch.co.uk
New Mimaki UCJV launches with enticing trade-in Hybrid Services has announced that the recently released Mimaki UCJV Series LED UV printer/cutter range is to benefit from a special launch trade-in offer of up to £4,000. The revolutionary new 1.6m devices launched to great acclaim in early October with orders taken by Hybrid’s resellers during The Print Show as visitors flocked to the stand to get an early view. “Take up of the new Mimaki UCJV300 and UCJV150 printer/cutters has been excellent,” says Hybrid’s National Sales Manager, John de la Roche. “This offer is designed to make it even easier for owners of existing printers across a range of ink types to enjoy the benefits of the LED UV technology.” The trade-in is available for any 700mm or wider solvent, eco-solvent, latex or SUV printer, with £3,000 offered against the Mimaki UCJV150-160 and £4,000 against the range-topping UCJV300-160. With ultra-low running costs, the ability to print to a broad range of materials, instant finishing, thanks to the unique properties of the machine’s LED UV ink and integrated cutting just a few of the features that set the new printer/cutter apart, de la Roche is unsurprised at the uptake. “We’ve already received a number of orders for the UCJV and we can see the potential it has to benefit so many different
types of print customer,” he states. “With its strong eco-credentials and innovative, creative capabilities, the UCJV is already proving attractive to not only sign makers and graphics producers, but the retail, education and public sectors as well.” Priced from just £15,995, the Mimaki UCJV Series will ship during the autumn, with the launch trade-in offer available on orders placed before December 21st 2017. The UCJV300
features white ink and both machines deliver high quality prints to materials including vinyl, banner, paper, backlit, display fabrics, PET film and more. With GREENGUARD Gold ink certification and powerful, yet easy to use RIP and cutting software included as standard, the UCJV provides broad reaching capabilities for producing profitable and innovative graphics. PIXEL PROPHET
OTHER PROGRAMMES ARE AVAILABLE! Martin Christie explores other software alternatives…
[W]
e’ve had all the trade Expos which major on the big machines and all the latest hardware, which is a great showcase for the manufacturers, but at the print shop end the quality of product is not dictated by the performance of the printers as much as the content provided by the customer. There’s only a certain amount that can be done about that, as popular technology continues to separate the user from any practical understanding of the processes involved. The only useful additions to the bureau toolbox are the very latest software products which might be able to do something to even up the odds on the side of the printer. That’s why much of this column has been occupied lately by the latest developments of Microsoft and Adobe, and the fact that both major players have introduced significant upgrades to their entire systems underlines how fast things are moving and how quickly features can become redundant or at least obsolete. Nothing is ever simple, of course, and every step forward seems to tempt at least a small skip backwards if only because the whole complex relationship is fraught with potential banana skins. Windows 10, for all its benefits, seems to have stirred up a number of conflicting issues with compatible drivers with older hardware, which is probably inevitable as the programme can be updated much easier that the machinery. Adobe’s improvements across the whole suite seem to have been painless and beneficial overall, other than the strain put upon older operating systems by the demands of processing and memory. Both companies have been reacting to the widespread use of tablets and phones by consumers rather more than the needs of the desktop operator, although the latter may have also been encouraged by the signs that others are bust nibbling away at their photo editing empire. I mentioned Macphun two issues ago, and their standalone alternative to Photoshop, Luminar, now available for Windows, runs under a new company a new name — Skylum — underlining that it has spread its wings from an entire Apple based application. It also works as a plug-in with Adobe PS to cover all bases. Plug-ins are one of those marmite feasts that users seem to love or hate. A number of pros tend to dismiss them as gimmicks, as if they in some
way corrupt the essential purity of Photoshop. But they are more than fancy filters featured in phones to give portraits glamorous looks or funny ears and noses. True much of what they do can be done in PS, but will take time. The best of the plug-ins offer a short cut to a series of alternative edits which can be selected as presets or further tuned to improve the final image. And the fine tuning can itself be saved as a customer preset for future use. One such plug in, mentioned before in these pages, is Nik software an independent who pioneered the so-called U-point technology of interrogating individual or groups of pixel colour or texture, to enable the smooth transition of features and produce seamless edits rather than the more crude copying and cloning that had gone on before. That use of intelligent comparison is now also seen in Photoshop’s Content Aware, and healing brushes, as well as many other functions now almost taken for granted. Only those of us who have worked through the development years can appreciate how advanced these apparently simple applications are and how much they have improved image manipulation for print. On a small screen you would never notice the difference, but as ever the truth is in the print, as all of the shortcomings of the original are exposed to the real world. All image capture devices, whether camera, phone or scanner, select colour by comparing adjacent colours to determine which is which. It’s very accurate these days, but it’s not infallible, which is why even given the limitation of the actual printer, a “copy” completely faithful to the original is almost impossible. Not that it ever was possible, which is what people forget or fail to appreciate. The digital revolution has dramatically moved forward our ability to capture, manipulate and reproduce image and artwork. But by the same count the technology in the hands of the average consumer has massively increased their own expectations. Hence the instant capabilities of the mobile phone produce not only an impatience for results, but a failure of comprehension that simply applying an interesting filter to a small screen does not make the image suitable or ready for print. Nik was snapped up by Google, not for its contribution to photography but because it had also developed a much reduced option for mobile phones called Snapseed. Once safely acquired the golden egg was retained but the goose that laid it was dropped, as Goggle announced earlier this year that they would no longer be supporting Nik. Thankfully the rights to Nik have been bought by Dx0, a company based in Paris as well as San Fransisco, so future development is assured, and even better news, the current filter collection is available as a free download. DxO is another of these relatively small companies that can only survive by nurturing talent, and has been in the image business for over ten years. It

will be fascinating to see where they take Nik, and as a regular user I for one am excited by the project. To download the current Nik collection, which works with both Photoshop and Lightroom, PC and Mac, Contact nikcollection@dxo.com Then there’s also Affinity, launched last year to a big fanfare. This is part of a complete suite intended to meet Adobe head on, but at this time I’m not sure how much it has progressed since it appeared. www.affinity.serif.com Whilst always wanting to stress that other programmes are available, anyone aiming to progress within the industry really has to work with the market standard. There are of course a number of simple editing programmes available as free downloads and I often recommend them to customers who may find “proper” editing programmes a little too demanding, but will at least be better than pressing a couple of automatic actions on their phones. All of these options and much more will no doubt be part of the Photography Show at the NEC in March, and while that may seem a long way away, with the Christmas festivities in between, it will soon loom large when hostilities commence again in January. Worth a reminder to get your free registration in now. Yes I know you are probably expo-ed out if you attended all the recent print shows, but this one is a little different. It’s a chance to look at the digital image world outside of the print industry bubble, and take in things that will have real consequences for your business, as well as some that might well be a useful addition. And you won’t be pestered by salesmen trying to flog you large format finishing machines. The exhibition runs from Saturday 18th to Tuesday 21st of March, being both trade and public, and covers all aspects of photography: capture, editing, printing and storage, as well as all manner of accessory items and features. I’ve been to everyone, and a good many of its previously titled back to the days of film, and I always trip over something of interest. As often it’s not the headline features that are really worth attention but the little gems
vivid-online.com
that may grow into items of significance. Back in the days when digital was just beginning, and many in the business thought it would never catch on and be a serious alternative to film, I met up with Richard Bamford for the first time, introducing his company, Extensis, with just a small presence — not much more than a table and a laptop. His pitch was very simple; as digital media became more popular, and possibly universal, along with the storage of archives, the actual access to individual files and folders would become crucial. And because digital information encouraged duplication and triplication, the scale of the problem would only spiral out of control without some sort of logical cataloguing system. And if this was going to be an issue for photographers, it was equally going to be one for the print shop — even more so. Back in the day we were all used to saving hard copy artwork in drawers and filing cabinets under names and jobs, and you could instantly see what was what. Even in the darkroom you could hold a strip of negatives up to the light to identify the subject. But digital presented a quite different challenge — how to select a particular item, or even a specific version of it, amongst a whole mass of seemingly identical icons and folders. Now of course, we are aware that every digital file, and particularly every digital photograph, contains its own individual identity buried in metadata which enables search engines to find it. Back then Extensis was one of the first companies to recognise the problem and anticipate the solution. Simply knowing the name of a file wasn’t enough, you needed to know where you had put it. Working closely with psychologists of human behaviour they established something we all actually know instinctively — logic is not consistent. If it was we would never lose our car keys, or that piece of paper with important notes on it. Apparently for the average person, what may seem logical in the morning, may be completely different in late afternoon. Extensis realised that a more comprehensive system was needed to effectively scour the electronic labyrinths for the vital clues. In addition a visual aid was added to complete the archival process. The use of thumbnails was not new, but putting them all together with keywords and metadata, and making the process entirely automated was what joined up the dots and dashes. Many of the features are now familiar in other programmes, which will perform similar tasks, but good to see Extensis are still developing and refining their ground breaking software, Portfolio. Even after twenty years of progress there are still new territories to be explored. You can try the software for free for thirty days with no obligation so it’s worth a trial to see if it will improve your workflow: www.extensis.com To register for the Photography Show at the NEC go to: www.photographyshow.com/registration

It is now a legal requirement to have a written Health and Safety policy in place if you have more than five employees. At QPP we are aware that there are many quick printers, or copy shops as we are still widely known, who have just that number of staff and as such have slipped through the net. With the growing popularity of apprenticeships it is essential that you have a policy in place, as the organisation placing somebody with you is obliged to check the suitability of your workplace. Our aim is to produce a template that is easily adapted to your own individual circumstances and to that end we have invested many weeks research and now have a template to forward to members.

Quick Print Pro • Showtime
December 2017-January 2018
SHOW PREVIEW
PRINTWEAR & PROMOTION LIVE! SHOW PREVIEW Printwear & Promotion LIVE! 2018 will take place in the bigger Halls 17 & 18 at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC), Birmingham from Sunday 21st January to Tuesday 23rd January.
[T]
he exhibition offers those in the copy and print industry the opportunity to explore how to expand their business by taking the first step into the garment decoration industry. Garment decoration is an easy add-on for high street digital printers. With over 150 stands from market-leading companies in the industry, the show is the perfect environment in which to source the best equipment in the market at a low cost. Companies on the search for ways to branch out into this dynamic sector will be able to find all of the necessary products, tips and advice at the exhibition. All of the major suppliers will be showcasing the latest in cutting edge garment, textile and promotional product printing equipment at the three-day show, with many unveiling new equipment and technology for the first time. Peter Wright, managing director of Amaya Sales UK, a supplier of garment decoration equipment, explains why he exhibits: “We attend Printwear & Promotion LIVE! because it gives our customers the chance to see all our latest products, witness live demonstrations and talk to our experts about any subject relating to the industry. “The Printwear & Promotion LIVE! exhibition also gives us the chance to show our leading garment decoration equipment products to any new customers entering the industry.” Visitors will benefit from on-stand product demonstrations and there will be a wealth of advice available on topics such as DTG printing, transfer printing, screen printing, marketing and more.
Transfer printing
Transfer printing is a great way for those looking to get started in the garment decoration industry. Investing in a desktop printer, heat press and other basic supplies for as little as £1,500, it is a cost-effective way to get started. For example, the OKI PRO8432WT is perfect for beginners. It has removed the design barriers presented by traditional CMYK printing
processes. Printing solid white onto a variety of media, it can be used in a combination with transfer media to create vibrant print on dark backgrounds, dark coloured garments and other hard surfaces. This cost-effective printer can be found on Amaya Sales UK (E40), Grafityp (H40) and TheMagicTouch (G60) stands. Also of interest to those looking to branch into the garment decoration industry is the Print Wizard transfer system which will be demonstrated on YES Ltd’s stand (H30). This self-weeding transfer system prints onto light, pastel and dark textiles, such as cotton, synthetics, nylon and wool using a low processing temperature, as well as hard surfaces such as plastic, wood and metal. This is a fast, reliable and cost-effective way of offering printed items and garments for business startups, particularly where the order is for a small quantity. Used in conjunction with the Ghost (B60) white toner cartridge to replace the black toner cartridge visitors will be able to find the full package at Printwear & Promotion LIVE! 2018. After a low-key debut at last year’s show, the InnoPrinter will be demonstrated on stand K62. Utilising an innovative technology that combines the simplicity of transfer application with the efficiency and low print cost of traditional screen printing, the InnoPrinter presents an alternative to time consuming print methods. The pre-prepared roll transfers require no pre-treatment, no curing and no weeding, making it ideal for complete novices.
Heat presses
A start-up business wouldn’t be complete without a great quality heat press, a number of which will be launched at the show. TheMagicTouch (G60) will be showcasing the new Hobstar heat press. The Hobstar is an A4 heat transfer press offering entry-level status within a budget. It is compatible with all transfer papers from TheMagicTouch and is also suitable for most sublimation platen based print applications. On Dae Ha UK’s stand (P10), heat press demonstrations from Lotus Heat Transfer Solutions will take place. From small home presses to large format industrial presses, Lotus has any size business covered. Making decorating garments easier than ever before, a range of Stahls heat presses can be found on Grafityp UK (H40) and Target Transfers’ (C30) stands. Also on Grafityp’s stand will be heat presses from Siser.
Transfer films and papers
In order to create high quality branded garments that stand out from the crowd, a business looking to get started in this sector will need a range of transfer papers and films to complement their heat press and printer. Visitors will find a wide variety of such substrates at the show this year. Forever garment transfer papers for inkjet and laser printers allow users to create unique designs on shirts, bags and other textile products. These can be found on Amaya Sales

UK and Grafityp’s stands. Dae Ha UK will showcase superb examples from its complete range of garment films, including game changing films such as the world’s first Stretchable Glitter and Stretch Metallic films, plus its unrivalled array of 40 glitter colours. Brand new exhibitor Dye Sublimation Supplies (B62) will be showcasing the Reveal PrintPerfect 600s system. Reveal transfer films allow you to print on cotton using sublimation ink. The PrintPerfect System allows you to sublimate polyester as normal, and with the film you will be able to print full colour onto white/ light-coloured cotton and, coming soon, films for white onto dark cottons and ultimately fullcolour onto dark as well. Many exhibitors at the show will have discounts and package deals for visitors looking to get started to take advantage of.
DTG printing
For those looking for an alternative method of garment decoration, direct to garment printing is another avenue to explore. The new GTX DTG printer from Brother will be running on both the GS UK stand (B55) and the MHM Direct GB stand (H50). Designed to make life easier for those dipping their toe into garment decoration, this new DTG printer eliminates the need for regular maintenance. Also being launched at the show on Resolute DTG’s stand (B20) is the R-Jet5i. This uses the same tried and tested chassis as the R-Jet5, but benefits from a modern print engine with a full 17in print bar. It is capable of printing a 10x12in
colour image on a dark shirt in three minutes with just 35 seconds curing time. Other exhibitors of interest include: Heatseal ID, Jester Prints, Merlin Transfers, Nova Chrome, Pressmech, Start2Print, Vapor Apparel, Xpres and more.
First steps in Embroidery
Visitors to the AJS stand K20 can again expect to see new innovations and technology. The latest innovation this year is their super compact industrial embroidery machine the SAI (Japanese for colourful). The SAI is everything you would expect from a Tajima machine but in a compact and light body with the added benefit of six top quality on-board fonts making it the ideal machine for mobile or counter personalisation customers. Also premiering at the 2018 show from Pulse Microsystems will be the new colourising App which will proceed to eliminate the age old dilemma met by all customers of ‘which colours for which design’. What AJS like most about P&P Live is the opportunity to promote their products, new technology and give in depth demonstrations to a live audience. The show always gives the company great feedback from their visitors and the compliments received during and after the show are a great testimonial to their products and valued staff. For embroiderers in particular, AJS is always a must visit stand at P&P Live as AJS and Tajima are always at the forefront of design and technology from where you can
see developments such as the unique head grouping on AR machines, the likes of which are allowing the way in which embroiderers work enabling them to become ultimately more streamlined and profitable.

Sign & Digital UK to evolve in 2018
Sign & Digital UK will return to the NEC next April with a host of new features and a theme tailored to meet the changing needs of its visitor profile. Creativity Brought To Life – the 2018 theme – has come about in response to extensive Sign & Digital UK visitor research and its findings. The theme and show graphics, along with a host of new practical elements soon to be announced, are all part of the event’s evolution. Rudi Blackett, event director for Sign & Digital UK said: “We are delighted to announce our 2018 visitors will benefit from a wider range of learning and networking opportunities than ever before, with new practical demo areas and interactive visitor features. “In addition to focusing on our core sign, print and finishing and display markets, we will also be broadening the appeal of the show further with an emphasis on the design and creative, textile print, event build and interior décor markets. We will be introducing a programme of engaging show content to highlight the business opportunities in these growing market sectors.”
Sign & Digital UK will take place at the NEC, Birmingham from 24 to 26 April 2018 and is free to attend for visitors. To enquire about exhibiting please contact the show team on 01342 332 000, email signanddigitaluk@fav-house.com
The Print Show returns to NEC for 2018 After this year’s edition of The Print Show which has been hailed a success by organisers, exhibitors, and visitors alike, it has been confirmed that the event will return to the NEC in Birmingham from September 18th to 20th 2018. The 2017 event, which ran from October 11th to 13th at the International Centre in Telford, attracted a total of 5,335 visitors across the three days. Reflecting on this year’s show, event director, Chris Davies, comments: “Moving to a new venue was a challenge that we relished — selling both the merits of the show and a new venue. However, as the hold-up in figures show and the warm feedback we have had from exhibitors and visitors alike, The Print Show has now stamped its mark for the long-term, and is widely accepted as the UK’s must-attend national exhibition. “This achievement could not have been made possible without the support and backing of the UK print industry and I would like to thank all our exhibitors and partners for their contribution. Together we once again delivered an event to be truly proud of, and I for one am excited for the future.”
HP commits to 2018
Although plans for next year’s event are still being drawn up, on the final day of the 2017 show, organisers were handed a major boost when HP opted to sign up for next year’s event. Davies adds: “It’s fantastic to have such a huge company declare its support for next year’s show already. We had a similar situation in our first year when a number of exhibitors signed up for year two while exhibiting at the show, and this commitment from HP demonstrates just how highly prints biggest brands value our event.”
Charity to benefit from gala dinner raffle
While much of the action this year was on the show floor, the evening of the middle day also saw The Print Show stage a special gala dinner. Attendees were treated to a three-course meal with entertainment from a jazz band and an after-party that went on into the early hours. A charity raffle also took place and the top prize of a racing experience day at Silverstone, the UK’s most famous motorsport venue, went to Richard
Fyson, director of Smart Print. While Fyson can look forward to following in the footsteps of Lewis Hamilton when he takes to the track, the money collected from the raffle will go to a charity of Fyson’s choice. Fyson has selected Keech Hospice Choice as the recipient of the charity raffle funds, which totalled £1,560. Fyson says: “It is always difficult to select a particular charity as there are so many deserving causes. Keech Hospice is a project my wife has supported over the years, providing care for both young and old with terminal and life-limiting illnesses in our local area.” Speaking about Smart Print and its attendance as an exhibitor at The Print Show this year, Fyson adds: “From an exhibitor’s perspective, we met a high proportion of people looking to make business investments over the next 12 months. Nearly all of the people were engaged and enthused by print, which is refreshing. “It’s also nice to catch up with a broad diversity of exhibitors who service our industry, many of whom are long-term friends.” www.theprintshow.com

Sign the tree charter The Charter for trees, woods and people sets out the principles for a society in which people and trees can stand stronger together. The Tree Charter was launched in Lincoln Castle on 6 November 2017; the 800th anniversary of the 1217 Charter of the Forest. The Tree Charter is rooted in more than 60,000 ‘tree stories’ gathered from people of all backgrounds across the UK. The 10 Tree Charter Principles articulate the relationship between people and trees in the UK in the 21st Century. The final Charter will provide guidance and inspiration for policy, practice, innovation and enjoyment, redefining the everyday benefits that we all gain from woods and trees in our lives, for everyone, from Government to businesses, communities and individuals. A tree will be planted for every person who signs the Charter.
Principle Themes
1. NATURE: Each tree is a world within itself, teeming with life. A fallen branch is a feast for beetles, fungal-rich woodland soil is a wildflower bed. A hedgerow is a living network, where a host of creatures share their home. Forests are full of opportunities for people, but their natural wealth is the wildlife. Our future good means thinking in the round, adapting plans to what is on the ground. New urban and transport projects should make routes for our native wildlife to move forward too. Take heed of nature’s needs. 2. PLANTING: When we enjoy the company of a treasured tree or the beauty of a favourite wood we often owe thanks to those with the foresight and confidence to invest in the future. We must show that same generosity of spirit, that same sense of hope for the future, and plant more now. Line streets with living greenery, let trees allow shifting colour into every life. More orchards for communities, more hedges for wildlife, more forests for timber and jobs. Nurture people’s pride in their local trees and empower them to care for their future. Right tree, right place, bright future. 3. ARTS AND HERITAGE: Stories have always grown on trees. Artists are drawn to their intricacies. Woods are rooted in memories, but it’s the leaf mould of tales told that nourishes future growth. The poetry of trees is always living, for every older work sends out new shoots. We grow attached to trees in books and learn to look for them in life. We feel connected to trees we know and love to see them painted well. Celebrate Tree Charter Day each year to strengthen this cultural legacy and help our living traditions thrive.

4. UTILITY AND LIVELIHOODS: Peace grows quietly in tree-lined places, where bees, fresh scents and birdsong revive our jaded senses. Sprays of greenery ensure cleaner air and clearer minds, and fitter bodies, more inclined to take a walk or meet a friend. Spirits lift and stress recedes when we stroll through healing glades. Parks and woodlands keep us well and help to quell fears of illness, ageing, loss – we breathe more freely under trees. Healthcare and tree-care go hand in hand: harness the therapeutic power of trees. 5. PROTECTION : Ancient woods have been continuously wooded since before records started: they are living descendants from Britain’s prehistory. A tree may be a village’s oldest inhabitant, a founding figure in a region’s identity, a natural monument in the nation’s story. Thorn-bushes and hedgerows harbour our history. Old orchards are habitats for some of our rarest species and living museums of disappearing ways of life. A country that cares for its future cares for its past: we need laws and commitment to protect these irreplaceable natural treasures.

6. PLANNING : Forests, woods and trees all flourish under the stewardship of skilled professionals. Trees reward us with fuel for enterprise, craft and invention, green energy and fires. Consider the source of wooden products and choose the home-grown from wellmanaged forests. Teach the rising generation that with responsible management a wooded land is a thriving nation. 7. HEALTH AND WELLBEING: The trees that touch us most are those that live among us, along our street, in the local park, beside our school or place of work. Like us, they grow and change, need space to breathe and support to thrive. Trees give places their distinctive character. Local community networks have a vital role to play in caring for woods and trees. Trees provide long-lasting good, so well-informed planning reaps long-term rewards. Take guidance on planting, felling and replanting from skilled professionals. Good landscapes of the future depend on care for trees today. 8. PEOPLE AND ACCESS TO TREES: Trees offer shared experience to every age, religion and race. In woods people can work together, sharing experiences and learning from each other and their natural surroundings. Those who no longer move with ease can still find pleasure among the trees. Cheerful voices ring through leaves, from makeshift pitches and games of make-believe. There should be room for us all beneath spreading canopies. 9. COPING WITH THREATS: Pests, diseases and climate change pose serious threats to our precious trees. Enlightened management of woods will help ensure their future health: planting strong seeds and saplings, selecting species suited to the site, keeping forests mixed in age and kind, regular thinning, combatting invasive plants, and controlling infections and pests at the earliest sign. 10. ENVIRONMENT: The trees that touch us most are those that live among us, along our street, in the local park, beside our school or place of work. Good landscapes of the future depend on care for trees today. www.treecharter.uk

aar gave a series of product printing demonstrations and conference presentations, as well as showcasing a wide range of print samples. In addition, Xaar is made several exciting announcements at the show. InPrint 2017 will highlighted the significant achievements Xaar has made in expanding into a wider range of print applications as it works towards its “2020 goal” of £220m in annual global sales by 2020. This is being driven by a focus on customer needs, as shown by its launch of seven new products over the last 18 months— and the other announcements planned for the show are further evidence of Xaar’s progress. Visitors to the Xaar stand were able to see samples of their recently launched High Laydown (HL) Technology for producing a variety of attractive textured effects on labels, folding cartons and ceramic tiles, as well as industrial applications such as laminates. HL Technology is available in the Xaar 1003 and Xaar 2001+ printhead families.
Also on show was the Roto-JET from EPS, Xaar’s business in the US, with two daily demonstrations. The Roto-JET, the latest advancement in cylindrical object inkjet printing, is a multi-colour, UV-LED, highresolution printer that offers state-of-the-art digital printing technology, and promises excellent reliability delivered by Xaar 1003 printheads. The printheads incorporate Xaar’s unique TF Technology, whereby ink is recirculated within the printhead, directly past the back of the nozzle during drop ejection, at the highest flow rates in the industry. This ensures
bubbles and particles are carried away, even in the harshest environments. In addition, InPrint featured a number of expert talks by members of the Xaar team: on the opportunities for inkjet within 3D Printing by Chris Noble, 3D Engineer, on functional reactive fluid disposition using Xaar technology bySimon Kirk, Senior Product Manager, on inkjet technology for the packaging industry , Jason Remnant, Product Line Manager and on directto-container printing,Tim Scully, Vice President of Sales at EPS. www.xaar.com

In preparation for full commercial launch, Xaar used InPrint 2017 to showcase its four colour print capabilities as well as the numerous advantages of its Xaar 5601 new Thin Film Piezo Silicon MEMS printhead. In addition, Xaar’s Jason Remnant presented “Revolutionary inkjet technology to take on the Packaging industry,” covering how features and technologies, such as those in the Xaar 5601, will help drive further digital adoption in the packaging industry. Visitors to the Xaar stand watched full A4 CMYK colour print samples produced by eight Xaar 5601 printheads. “As we get ready for the full commercialisation of such a significant new printhead platform, there are a number of key milestones we have had to pass. The Mimaki 3DUJ-553 printer jets successive layers of ink, which are instantly cured by UV light until the object is fully formed. Fine layers accumulate on the build tray to create one or several precise 3D models or parts. Where overhangs or complex shapes require support, the 3D printer jets a removable support material. It uses LED curing for reduced energy usage and is differentiated from other 3D printers in a number of aspects, including: • The ability to print full colour objects with
more than 10 million colours. Colour profiles can be used to ensure accurate and consistent colour. This means no over-painting is required, saving time and labour. • White ink, as well as a clear ink overcoat that adds vibrancy to the printed product. Its clear ink can also be combined with colour ink to create half colour transparent models. • Materials can be removed with a simple water wash, eliminating the need to manually cut tags or other support structures. • Maximum build size of 50 x 50 x 30 cm, larger than comparable 3D printers. Mimaki is exclusively distributed in the UK and Ireland by Hybrid Services, and director, Phil
Thomas notes, “With the new 3DUJ-553, Mimaki is drawing upon its many years of UVcurable inkjet printing in the 2D world and has equipped the new printer with a number of its proprietary core technologies.”
Combining 3D printing with 2D printing
The Mimaki UJF-7151plus flatbed UV printer, geared to on-demand printing of the very highest quality at industrial production levels of output, the UJF-7151plus is ideal for decorative printing on 3D models as well as multi-layer printing on diverse materials, ranging from plastics and glass to metal and wood. The Mimaki 3DUJ-553 is based on the same proven technology that Mimaki has successfully deployed to the market with the UJF-7151plus flatbed UV printer. www.hybridservices.co.uk

SOMETHING TO SHARE…? Reindeer Lessons
Did you hear that Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer never went to school? That’s right—he was elf taught.
Good Lights
A customer walked into our store looking for Christmas lights. I showed her our top brand, but— wanting to make sure each bulb worked—she asked me to take them out of the box and plug them in. I did, and each one lit up. “Great,” she said. I carefully placed the string of lights back in the box. But as I handed them to her, she looked alarmed. “I don’t want this box,” she said abruptly. “It’s been opened.”
Wish list
December is the month when the kids begin to discuss what to get Dad for Christmas. Some insist on a shirt.Others insist on a pair of socks. The argument always ends in a tie.
Forever Friends
On New Year’s Eve, Patty stood up in the local bar and said that it was time to get ready. At the stroke of midnight, she wanted everyone to be standing next to the one person who made their life worth living. As the clock struck 12, chaos erupted as the bartender was almost crushed to death.
Christmas Wish List
Wallflower
Why couldn’t the butterfly go to the fancy New Year’s Eve dance? It was a mothball!
Fair Play
This Christmas, I told my girlfriend that all I wanted was an Xbox, nothing more. That’s it. Beginning and end of list, One Xbox. You know what she got me? A homemade frame with a picture of us from our first date together. Which was fine... because I bought her an Xbox.
The Headache Suit
A little girl was watching her parents dress for a party. As her dad donned his tuxedo she warned, “Daddy, you shouldn’t wear that suit.” “And why not, darling?” he asked. “You know that it always gives you a headache the next morning.”
The Tenth Reindeer?
Everyone’s heard of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer as the ninth reindeer, but many people don’t know that there is a tenth one whose name was Olive. “Olive the other reindeer, used to laugh and call him names...”
Gift Exchange
My friend reviewed her young son’s fill-in-the-blank homework. One line: “At Christmas, we exchange gifts with ___________.” His response: “Receipts.”
The older sister asks her younger brother, “What are you giving Mum and Dad for Christmas?” Without missing a beat, the little brother replies, “A list of everything I want.”
Hindsight
Short Marriage
A teenage boy with spiked hair, nose ring, and baggy clothes was overheard telling a friend, “I don’t really like to dress like this.” “Then why do you?” asked the friend. “It keeps my parents from dragging me everywhere with them.”
Two newlyweds quickly realised their marriage wasn’t working and filed for a divorce. The judge asked them what the problem was. The husband replied: “In the five weeks that we’ve been together, we haven’t been able to agree on a single thing.” The judge turned to the wife: “Have you anything to say?” She answered: “It’s been six weeks, your honour.
Relationships are a lot like algebra... Have you ever looked at your ‘X’ and wondered ‘Y’?
Dressing Like This
Jaws duel
How did the octopus defeat the shark? He was well armed!
Use your loaf
At the zoo I noticed a slice of toast in one of the enclosures. I asked the keeper, “How did that toast get into the cage?” “It was bread in captivity,” she replied.
Kids sale
How much does it cost a Pirate to get his ears pierced? A bucc-an-eer!
After a rough day spent looking after my rowdy kids, I’d had enough. “I think I’m going to sell them,” I hissed to my sister. “You’re crazy,” she said. “For thinking of selling them?” “For thinking someone would buy them.”
Little white lie
It’s All in the Name
Pirate Earrings
I am five feet, three inches tall and pleasingly plump. After I had a minor accident, my mother accompanied me to A and E. The triage nurse asked for my height and weight, and I blurted out, “Five-foot-eight and nine stone.” While the nurse pondered this information, my mother leaned over to me. “Sweetheart,” she gently chided, “this is not the Internet.”
Try Marriage
Because I had forgotten the dates for a number of my friends and relatives’ birthdays and anniversaries, I decided to compile a list on the computer and have the dates highlighted on screen when the machine was turned on. I went to a number of computer stores to find a software programme that would do the job, but had no luck at the first few. I finally found one where the clerk seemed experienced. “Can you recommend something that will remind me of birthdays and anniversaries?” I asked. “Have you tried a wife?” he replied.
It’s All About the Money
A couple was having a discussion about family finances. Finally the husband exploded, “If it weren’t for my money, the house wouldn’t be here!” The wife replied, “Honey, if it weren’t for your money, you wouldn’t be here!”
Christmas Phone Log
Boy to boy: 1 minute Boy to Dad: 30 seconds Boy to Mum: 2 minutes Boy to girl: 1 hour Girl to girl: 2 hours Girl to boy: 1 missed call Husband to wife: 15 seconds Wife to husband: 15 missed calls
If your name is on the building, you’re rich... If your name is on your desk, you’re middle-class... If your name is on your shirt, you’re neither of the first two!
Expensive Mistake
A husband and wife had a big argument. Frustrated and fed up, the wife called up her Mum and said, “We fought again, and I can’t do this anymore. I am coming to live with you.” Mum said, “No darling, he must pay for his mistake. I am coming to live with you.”
Bed Time Question
If you refuse to go to sleep... Does that mean you’re resisting a rest?
Parachute Problems
The topic of the day at Army Airborne School was what you should do if your parachute malfunctions. We had just gotten to the part about reserve parachutes when another student raised his hand. “If the main parachute malfunctions,” he asked, “how long do we have to deploy the reserve?” Looking the trooper square in the face, the instructor replied, “The rest of your life.”
Tune it in mate!
The doorbell rang and the lady of the house discovered a workman, complete with tool chest, on the front door. “Lady,” he announced, “I’m the piano tuner.” The lady exclaimed, “Why, I didn’t send for a piano tuner.” The man replied, “I know, but your neighbours did.”

One day at a local café, a woman suddenly called out, “My daughter’s choking! She swallowed a pound coin. Please, anyone, help!” Immediately a man at a nearby table rushed up to her and said he was experienced in these situations. He calmly stepped over to the girl, then with no look of concern, wrapped his arms around her and squeezed. Out popped the pound coin. The man returned to his table as if nothing had happened. “Thank you!” the mother cried. “Tell me, are you a doctor?” “No,” the man replied. “I work for the tax office.”
they were suddenly called away on another emergency. To the horror of my sister and her colleagues, the man was left alone in the unlocked room. After a few minutes, the door opened and he began to walk out. Summoning up her courage, one of the secretaries barked, “Get back in there and don’t you come out until you’re told!” The man scuttled back inside and slammed the door. When the security people returned, the women reported what had happened. Without a word, an officer walked into the room and released the very frightened copier repairman.
Four Legs
Professional Worrier
Pay Up
A wife comes home late one night and quietly opens the door to her bedroom. From under the blanket, she sees four legs instead of just her husband’s two. Suspecting the worse, she reaches for an extra pillow and starts hitting the blanket as hard as she can, letting her anger and frustration out. Once she’s done, she goes to the kitchen to have a drink. As she enters, she sees her husband there, reading a magazine. He says, “Hi darling, your parents have come to visit us, so I let them stay in our bedroom. Did you say hello?”
Undercover
Working as a secretary in an international airport, my sister had an office adjacent to the room where security temporarily holds suspects. One day, security officers were questioning a man when
A man in a cinema notices what looks like a cat sitting next to him.
Jack had been a compulsive worrier for years, to the point it was ruining his life. He saw a psychologist who recommended a specialist who could help him. His friend, Bob, noticed a dramatic change and asked, “What happened? Nothing seems to worry you anymore.” “I hired a professional worrier and I haven’t had a worry since,” replied Jack. “That must be expensive,” Bob replied. “He charges £5,000 a month,” Jack told him. “£5,000!!! How in the world can you afford to pay him?” exclaimed Bob. “I don’t know. That’s his problem.”
Adult Definition
What is the definition of adult? ADULT: A person who has stopped growing at both ends and is now growing in the middle.
“Are you a cat?” asked the man, surprised.
Wake up call
Tired of hearing her teenager complain about everything, the frustrated mother finally reached her boiling point. “Honey, let me give you some free life advice... Life IS as bad as you think, and yes, they ARE out to get you!”
Too Much Glistening
The girlfriend stands by door, not sure what to say. “Honey, why is your whole upper half covered in baby oil?” “Well, you’re always saying I never glisten,” replies the boyfriend. “Listen! I said you never LISTEN!”
Ineffective Pain Pills
“Evidently, my pain pills are not working.” “Why do you say that?” “Well, you’re still here.”
The Six-Foot Cockroach
A man comes to his doctor’s surgery all battered and bruised. The doctor sees him and asks him how he got injured. The man said there was a knock at his front door. When he opened the door there stood a six-foot cockroach. He said he tried to shut the door real quick but before he could react the cockroach knocked him back against the far wall. He said the cockroach threw him around from wall to wall, punched and kicked him and then just turned and left. The doctor said, “This is the flu season. I’ve been trying to contact all my patients and let them know there’s a real nasty bug going around this year.”
“Yes.” “What are you doing at the movies?”
39
Exhibitionist
Myra was going to the office party but needed a new party dress. In the clothing store she asked, “May I try on that dress in the window, please?” “Certainly not, madam,’” responded the salesgirl. “You’ll have to use the fitting room like everyone else.”
Salesman Jokes
All meant in good spirit. How do salesman’s brain cells die? Alone. How do you keep a salesman busy all day? Put her in a round room and tell her to sit in the corner. How does a sales lady kill a fish? She drowns it. A salesman is going to London on a plane, how can you steal his window seat? Tell him the seats that are going to London are all in the middle row . What do you do when a salesman throws a pin at you? Run like Hell.... he’s got a hand grenade in his mouth. How do you make a salesman laugh on Saturday? Tell him a joke on Wednesday. Why did the sales lady have blisters on her lips? From trying to blow out light bulbs. Why did the salesman climb up to the roof of the bar? He heard that the drinks were on the house. How do you get a one-armed salesman out of a tree? Wave at him. How do you keep a salesman busy? Write ‘Please turn over’ on both sides of a piece of paper.
The cat replied, “Well,I liked the book.”
