It’s not just me; the whole team are revolting this time of year. I blame the time off. When we are busy as usual, there is not much time for planning change and improvements, but throw in a couple of bank holidays and a few bottles of prosecco and printers turn proactive. All in jest of course. Do get resolute and plan to do in 2020 what you didn’t quite manage this year. When I have carried forward all this in my diary, I really do feel primed and organised. Specialized Signs purchase HP Latex R1000 Specialized Signs has continued a period of investment with the purchase of an HP Latex R1000 — a highly versatile machine it predicts will help it double its business. Established in Edinburgh in 2009 by Managing Director Graham Sim, Specialized Signs has increased in size and scope from the outset. Each year it has employed two or three new team members to bring its current workforce to around 24, and at present runs twelve fleet vehicles to help service its customers from across the UK — from multinationals including hotel and gym chains, to independent restaurants and shops. It tripled its business in the past five years and plans to double it again in the next five, supported by recent appointments of its third project manager and first salesperson — and by cutting edge equipment. Around ten months ago Specialized Signs installed a CNC cutting machine to automate formerly manual finishing processes and needed a new printing system to accompany it. Graham Sim explains he had been researching flatbed printer options for four or five years, and this year discovered that the HP Latex R1000 was the ideal solution. “No other machine we looked at could justify the ROI compared to what the HP R1000 can produce, how quickly it can produce it, the quality, the price and the cost of inks,” he comments. “Previously, we had been printing onto vinyl and applying it manually to sign boards, so by printing directly to substrates we are making substantial cost savings on both vinyl and labour. The quality is also better; the appearance of vinyl application is nowhere near as good as direct printed work on the HP R1000.” Designed for growing businesses with investment and space constraints, the versatile HP R1000 printer offers a single set of inks for a wide range of flexible and rigid media including applications for retail, outdoor signage, window graphics, events and exhibitions, and decorations.

As an existing user of HP Latex 570, Specialized Signs saw other benefits of investing in the R1000. “The R1000 is a hybrid machine — you can print both direct to substrate and from roll media — which gives us a back-up in case of any downtime for the roll-fed 570,” says the Specialized Signs MD. “Both HP machines are latex which makes compatibility easier in terms of colour consistency, and the eco-friendly credentials of HP latex ink is also a major selling point.” The HP Latex R1000 was supplied by authorised HP reseller ADAPT. “The new HP R1000 is a beast of a machine and the service from ADAPT was very good,” comments Graham Sim. “The engineers are very knowledgeable and helpful in answering any questions.” He concludes: “We’ve seen fantastic results so far from the HP R1000 with a lot more to come in the next twelve months. Specialized Signs has a huge potential for growth.” www.specializedsigns.co.uk

Precision Printing expands services with Renz Precision Printing has enhanced its service offering following investment in an Argos F400 V5 UV High Definition Flood Coater supplied by Renz. Andy Skarpellis, Precision Printing’s Chief Operating Officer, explains: “We wanted to be able to deliver new offerings to clients, particularly our trade buyers. We had been looking at ways to provide protection to printed jobs as well as add value. We already had lamination capabilities, but flood UV offered a fast, affordable and more eco-friendly alternative.” As for choosing the Argos solution he states: “We had been looking at flood UV solutions for several years. We wanted something that was dynamic with green button technology and cold UV lamps. We wanted something that could be set up and left to run unmanned, so the operator is freed up to run other systems. We went to Belgium, saw one in action and were impressed.” He continues: “Also important was the cost effectiveness of the UV liquid. The application technology means a lot less liquid is used in the flood coating. As a result, we expect a 12 to 18 month return on investment. We are already seeing a real impact on our ability to complete fast turnaround short run work quickly. “We installed it just in time to help with our peak demand period of September to December. It will help us to handle workflow more smoothly. We are seeing clients moving to UV vanish from lamination and expect it to be running at a minimum of 80% capacity. This enables us to confidently manage the workload and have the ability to be flexible with last minute jobs.” The extraordinarily compact F400 UV coater provides a protective layer

which adds value to any printed document protecting it from scratching and fingerprints at speeds up to 65 metres per minute. The high speed curing system is ozone free with no need for extraction. It’s economic, environmentally friendly and delivers a 50% power saving versus traditional lamps. Also important to Andy in the purchasing decision was the working relationship Precision Printing has developed with Renz: “Our long term partnership has grown through our investment in wire binding equipment. It is more and more important to work with a supplier that you trust and that has the infrastructure to support you. Renz delivers on that and is a phenomenal company to work with.” www.renz.co.uk • skarpellis@gmail.com

Fast Fiery finishing from Morgana and EFI Morgana Systems, a wholly owned subsidiary of Plockmatic International, has collaborated with EFI to develop a time saving integration between Fiery driven print engines, Fiery workflow software, and Morgana finishing devices. Templates are now available for the most common jobs, such as business cards or postcards, to use in Fiery Impose. These match the finishing templates on the Morgana AutoCut Pro multi-function finishing device, saving up to 70% in set-up time. The finishing templates come pre-set with measurements for the margins and gutters as well as finished sizes. The templates use cut registration marks that let the Morgana AutoCut Pro compensate for image shift automatically without manual intervention during the production run. The templates are available in both metric and imperial measurements. Commenting on the introduction of this enhanced automated finishing solution, Ray Hillhouse, General Manager, UK Operations, Plockmatic Group, said: “Customers are continually seeking ways to cut production time on printed jobs whilst increasing profitability at the same time. This is our latest automated solution to assist users in finishing regular work — saving time, ensuring accuracy, speeding up production, and therefore increasing profit on the job.

“EFI’s Fiery RIP is used extensively across the industry. Users will now have access to the Morgana templates used on our AutoCut Pro product. The Fiery RIP’s Impose module can then impose jobs to match the needs of our finishing device.” The Morgana AutoCut Pro is a multi-function finishing device for cutting, slitting and creasing. The unit has been designed for busy digital print shops that have a need for high speed creasing and trimming for a wide range of products, including business cards and promotional products. The tri-suction feeding mechanism is able to handle paper weights from 120 to 350gsm, whilst sheet sizes can range from 210 x 210mm to 330 x 700mm in length. AutoCut Pro has a

double feed detection sensor to avoid wasting valuable printed stock, as well as a skew adjustment facility and a cut mark sensor capable of reading any image drift to ensure a consistent finish without the need for operator intervention. Running at speeds of up to 5,000 sheets per hour on standard creasing applications, a typical run of 250 business cards can be finished in less than two minutes. Morgana Systems is a wholly owned subsidiary of Plockmatic International, a part of the Plockmatic Group. The company supplies a wide range of innovative and market leading offline post-press equipment for customers involved in the many and varied activities of the printing industry throughout the world. Equipment is manufactured at a number of Plockmatic owned plants across the globe. www.morgana.co.uk

Horizon CRF-362 Eliminates bottleneck at Zenith Zenith Print & Packaging has invested in a Horizon CRF-362 creaser and folder and retrofittable Multi-functional Imprinting Unit for its Foliant laminator to support a number of fast turnaround short run services. The Pontypridd operation is part of the Zenith Group which was established in the 1980s and has grown organically and through acquisition. It not only supplies UK business but also buyers abroad and has won a Queen’s Award for Export. The group runs a variety of SpeedMaster presses, Suprasetter CtP technology and both commercial and packaging post press machines from Heidelberg. Kelli-Louise Johnson, Digital General Manager, explains the reason for the new additions: “With our turnover growing in the digital department, investment was needed to enable us to offer quality and speed on finishing leaflets, covers and brochures. I liked the Horizon CRF-362 because it is all in one and compact. It also saves time and money with its speed and set up. It will also ensure the high quality of finished products.” As for the business impact the system has

made so far, she says: “This machine has helped the finishing staff no end, with its speed and accuracy. Jobs are being turned around in minutes not hours.” The foiler was chosen to offer value added print on short runs: “With small quantities this was perfect, as we have foiling in our litho department, but this gave us the ability to foil one off certificates, covers, or prototypes for packaging — all with no die costs. It is quick and easy to use which is very important for short runs.” The Horizon CRF-362 creases and folds in one pass a wide range of light and heavy weight stocks, coated or uncoated. Capable

of up to ten crease lines on a sheet, it uses an impact scoring technology that eliminates or minimises cracking of the stock or printed image. Set-up and changeovers — including fold pattern, creasing number, and up/down crease selection — are completed on the high resolution intuitive colour touch screen. The retrofittable Multi-functional Imprinting Unit will affordably transform output from Zenith Print & Packaging’s Foliant Vega laminator. It makes foiling and spot varnish fast and affordable for short run and personalised print by applying foil or varnish to a pre-printed black toner. The sheet can then be reprinted mono or four colour. It runs a wide range of colours including gold, silver, red and green and a clear gloss for spot varnish. There are the options to add foil to unlaminated paper, or, for a more luxury feel and look, foil can be added to laminate film such as ‘Soft Touch’ or ‘Anti Scuff Matt’. The process transforms business cards, luxury packaging, letterheads, stationery, wedding stationery, high end print, book covers, greeting cards and security printing. www.ifsl.uk.com

Kyocera inkjet Taskalfa Pro 15000c Kyocera Document Solutions UK expands into new business domains. The organisation has launched its first production print device with the TASKalfa Pro 15000c. This development is the next step in Kyocera’s diversification, building on a wealth of experience in the creation of inkjet printhead technology. Kyocera uses its longstanding heritage and expertise in the printing industry, where their collection of MFPs and printers are among the most respected in the market, to move into the production printing domain with its latest product. The device offers low maintenance, high efficiency and low energy consumption and provides solutions in an economical way for printing in high quantities. “This marks a milestone for Kyocera! The TASKalfa Pro 15000c is the result of our decades of experience into the production print sector. We have an established pedigree in the manufacture of inkjet print technology with our print heads already being utilised across a number of Direct to Garment (DTG) and existing production print platforms. “The impressively productive machine is ideally suited for a wide range of production print environments including Central Reprographic Departments and transactional/ trans-promotional applications to name but a few,” explained Michele Mabilia, Head of Product Marketing at Kyocera Document Solutions UK. Whilst this product launch sees Kyocera move into a whole new area of business, it retains many of the key features that have made the brand so successful. One such aspect is the device’s ease of maintenance, thanks to the few moving parts that reduce the risk of breakdown and can even be easily replaced by users themselves in many cases without the need for a technician’s visit. This provides reliability for companies who require consistency from their printing services due to the high quantities of

print demanded from each production job. Additionally, TASKalfa Pro 15000c can enhance the productivity of any print job, with a warm-up time of less than 120 seconds and a time to first print of 5.5 seconds or less. This offers improved agility and flexibility to companies who cannot afford to wait for their print output. When combined with simple integration into existing workflows, the device can ensure that users always find a way to meet even the most the demanding of deadlines without compromising on quality, control or costs. All of this is achieved whilst also protecting environmental sustainability, which is at the heart of Kyocera’s philosophy, considering the device operates at 6.3 KwH/week for Typical Electricity Consumption (TEC), representing one of the best energy efficient products in this category on the market. Focused on optimising energy usage as much as possible, the TASKalfa Pro 15000c maintains Kyocera’s focus on reducing environmental impact at the same time as costs. “Our intrinsic values are what has helped Kyocera position ourselves at the forefront of innovation within the printing industry. It was essential for the TASKalfa Pro 15000c to be built on the same premise of essential foundations as a product that offers more than just quality, but also reliability and sustainability, and therefore represent

a comprehensive value package for our customers,” Mabilia added. “Companies are growing increasingly conscious of the need to improve security by internalising print services, particularly in sectors such as banking, healthcare, utilities and public services. They have also recognised the opportunity to add value through personalisation that is unique to this type of products. This made it clear to us at Kyocera that the time was right to bring our experience into a new domain with a specific product ready to lead the market,” he concluded. Technical highlights: Designed for all printing needs: Up to 1 million prints per month in A4; Scalability: Modular design allows for different scales, with storage for up to 14,310 sheets; Speed: 150 prints per minute on A4; Always ready to print: Just 5.5 seconds warm-up time from standby and time to first print; Versatility: Personalise your documents and finishing options on paper up to 360g/ m2; Optimised maintenance: Users are able to replace parts easily themselves, removing the need for regular technician visits; and Low environmental impact: Low average energy usage of just 1.5 KwH for the standard configuration with several environmental certifications, such as Energy Star, EPEAT, RoHS and EcoMark. www.kyoceradocumentsolutions.co.uk

Morgana SquareFold trim module Undoubtedly in these days of tight margins and ever more demanding customers, print needs to work harder and smarter than ever before. The all new Morgana SquareFold Trimmer (SFT) module is the perfect complement to any in-house print shop or High Street print business looking to add value to a finished booklet. The industry-first Morgana SFT delivers two functions in one: booklet square back creation and trimming. Simply insert a stapled and folded booklet into the feeder, and out comes a professionally finished document, with a sharp square folded spine and neatly trimmed front edge. Commenting on the introduction of this unique finishing solution, Ray Hillhouse, General Manager, UK Operations, Plockmatic Group, said: “Whilst we have now incorporated our patented SquareFold technology into all of our market leading booklet making systems, we felt that there was still a need in the market for a free standing solution. The SFT unit is ideal for those smaller print operations that don’t produce the larger quantities that we normally come across to offer their customers this high

quality finish that makes any booklet stand out from the crowd. “Short-run booklets can easily be handfed into the SFT for these final finishing stages that can turn any run of the mill booklet into a publication that will really get noticed.” Operator Assisted Three-Side Trimming — Not all customers have access to a guillotine, or the time to use one for short run jobs. The SFT module can also process booklets for bleed trimming book by book in an operator assisted process. Three side trimmed booklets

are now an option for the small print or office installations. The Look of a Perfect Bound book — The module is equipped with the heavy duty SquareFold module, similar to that found on the larger Morgana SquareFold booklet making systems. This enables booklets made from a wide variety of paper stocks and sizes to have a perfectly formed square spine, giving the booklet that perfect bound look — as well as making the booklets easier to stack, all at a fraction of the cost. Wide Application Range — The Morgana SFT has an impressive booklet range, taking product from A6 size through to A4 landscape books. Maximum booklet feed size is 320 x 310mm. The machine can process up to fifty sheets of 80gsm paper stock. Getting professional results from your existing staple-and-fold finisher has never been easier. The User Interface — The touch-screen interface helps operators of all skill levels get the most out of the system with plenty of graphics and a guided set-up to get things started. www.morgana.co.uk

DGSHAPE launch LD-300 Laser Decorator DGSHAPE Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Roland DG Corporation and a provider of digital fabrication tools, including 3D milling machines, 3D printers, and engraving machines, has announced the release of the LD-300 laser decorator. According to Hiroshi Oe, Global Product Manager for 3D Products at DGSHAPE, “the LD-300 is the next generation of DGSHAPE’s laser decorator technology. Its larger and more robust platform can produce all the previous applications of the revolutionary LD-80 laser decorator, while also adding the capability of foil decoration on large items. We are also very proud to announce that LD-300 can imprint directly on to natural leather!” The LD-300 Laser Decorator goes beyond foil decoration on soft plastics to include larger three dimensional items and direct imprinting on natural leather. The unique design of LD300 allows unique personalisation of small or large objects without sacrificing quality. The working area of LD-300 is approximately 305mm x 230mm and can accommodate objects up to 50mm in thickness. The bed can be removed for even larger items up to 200mm, such as handbags and product packaging. The LD-300 can produce stunning graphics and crisp text using bundled METAZAStudio

software. Oe continues. “The LD-300 is a Class 1 laser product. The shielded front cover and completely enclosed frame are perfect for retail environments where safety is a primary concern. Unlike laser engraving technologies that tend to burn the surface of leather during processing, the LD-300 requires no ventilation and leaves no debris during the decorating process. Setup is simple and intuitive, with easy to use software features for complete control of the decoration workflow.” Wide release is expected in Q2 of 2020. This summer Boylan Imaging was contacted by artist and graphic designer Hello It’s Matilda, who had recently moved from South Africa to Calgary and had received an order to turn one of her paintings into wallpaper. As a regular user of Drytac ReTac, Boylan Imaging chose this polymeric removable vinyl to deliver the project for Hello It’s Matilda, with impressive results. “We use the ReTac for a lot of projects,” comments John Boylan, Owner and Manager of Boylan Imaging. “Anyone can work with this product as it doesn’t have to be professionally installed, and the wallpaper project for Hello It’s Matilda went very smoothly. “In fact the artist really had no idea how easy it was to print her work large scale and had never done this in the past, so it has definitely sparked new creativity for her and her client.” Posting as @hello.itsmatilda, the artist took to Instagram to share photos of her original botanical work, the installation of the wall covering and the colourful finished project — attracting several glowing comments. She said: “Dream come true! My illustration converted to wallpaper for the first time …One of the first and very exciting projects here in Canada!

Hand painted illustration converted into a wallpaper design — printed by the amazing @boylanimaging. They print vinyl wallpaper that can be easily applied and removed without losing adhesion and leaving no residue when removed.” In business for 21 years, Boylan Imaging relies on several Drytac products for its work including Emerytex laminating film and Multitac adhesive for a number of mounting purposes and Printable Eclipse PET film for trade show displays. “Drytac is a great company that offers a variety of products. Their service is great as well,” says John Boylan. www.drytac.com

Drytac Woodgrain Adds Depth And Texture New ReTac® Textures Woodgrain has been designed to add depth and texture to static, flat graphics, giving them incredible visual appeal. The embossed woodgrain-effect finish really makes images stand out, making it perfect for eye-catching interior promotions, wall graphics, custom wall murals, interior décor, retail displays, trade show graphics and signage. It is also an ideal material for textured labels, decals and stickers. Like the other products in the popular ReTac range, ReTac Textures Woodgrain features the innovative ReTac ultra removable and repositionable adhesive, making it easy to apply and reposition multiple times without leaving residue behind or reducing its adhesion. It’s also simple and clean to remove without damaging the surface. ReTac Textures Woodgrain is also fire-rated making it ideal for public spaces. ReTac Textures Woodgrain is a 6 mil (150-micron) phthalate-free polymeric PVC film with an embossed wood textured matte finish. Available in widths up to 54 inches (1370mm), this white printable media is compatible with eco-solvent, solvent, latex and UV printing technologies and offers five years’ interior and exterior durability and two years’ removability outdoors. “Drytac is delighted to add the new Woodgrain finish to the ReTac Textures range globally,” says Shaun Holdom, Global Product Manager

at Drytac. “It’s embossed-effect surface adds a richness and depth to images, making it perfect for graphics displayed on flat surfaces like walls and exhibition boards. “Every product in the ReTac range is designed for ease of use so we expect to see some exciting applications for it across the globe.” www.drytac.com.

PIXEL PROPHET

DELIVERING DISASTER There can’t be many of us outside of the Oval office who don’t recognise something has to be done about the environment. We owe it to the planet we have used and abused for centuries since the beginning of the first industrial revolution to put something back if only because it’s the only one we have got. And while the first revolution of coal, iron and steel began the exploitation of resources on an industrial scale, the current digital one has enabled technology to reach into every corner of the earth with uncertain consequences. Martin Christie scribes…

[T]

he blast furnace for example, was really useful for smelting metal into tools, and then shapes and structures and on to rails that would carry trains around the world, but it was also very handy for making canons. Almost all revolutions tend to have good and bad consequences in equal or unequal measure, and the digital one is no different. The fact that we can exchange information, money and goods around the world is a convenience that has a dark side when the market place is not a level playing field, and the immediate purchase price does not reflect the actual cost to the overall economy, and the environment. All of us who retail direct to customers have had to contend with being undercut by online competition over the last decade. Many big brand names on the high street have gone out of business. And the smug financial advisors who say we just have to react to changing demand don’t factor in the real long term results of this self-serving trend. As long as there is same day, next day, and most important ‘free’ delivery, we are on a slippery slope. Like the fabled free lunch, it doesn’t exist, and someone or something, is picking up the eventual tab. I can’t actually put my finger on a time when people suddenly realised they needed a fridge freezer before lunchtime, but I rather suspect it was more marketing led than popular demand. Maybe it started when all shops started opening on a Sunday, rather than those allowed selling ‘essentials’. Then you had to plan your food shop for the weekend instead of saving up to do a massive raid on a hypermarket. Certainly around the same time the bean counters who had taken over the direction, much of British industry and business came up with the concept of just in time. No need to order stock in advance and have dead money sitting on the shelf, if you could order it and get in dispatched only when you needed it. Of course, that’s all very well but you

are dependent upon it actually being produced in time, let alone delivered. If something should interrupt that process then the whole system grinds to a halt. Today, it’s not only the finance managers who can demand such service, but every customer who has a mobile phone. It is this personal preference which no one really thought through which is really at the heart of the digital economy dilemma. I was penning some notes on this column in a bar as I often find the best place to reflect upon the world, when someone a few feet away who had been dabbing anxiously at his mobile phone announced “great that will be with me tomorrow morning!” This was 10pm and someone, somewhere was going to have to pick it, pack it, and push it on a truck that someone else was going to have to drive somewhere just to meet a probably artificial deadline. Was that really so great? This is the insanity of the situation we are all in, trying to do our little bit to be green and planet friendly by recycling our cardboard packaging, while at the same time everyone is creating more of it and moving it in ever increasing circles. Despite the sophistication of digital technology it seems the sheer scale of the problem is beyond

any practical solution to rationalise or co-ordinate all the thousands of individual deliveries. We are in the centre of Brighton, which, like most cities, has a major congestion problem due to just too many vehicles of all sizes being funnelled into roads designed in Victorian times for a relative handful of horse and carts. The council’s solution seems very simple: reduce the size of the roads, and the number that can be used, then the traffic won’t be so bad because no one will want to drive in. This simplistic approach to traffic management has one major flaw — when it was drawn up no account was made of the increasing amount of delivery vehicles from scooters delivering pizza to articulated lorries carrying avocados to so-called convenience stores. This entirely unregulated tide has become an unstoppable tsunami. What they didn’t know, or even bothered to find out, is that the average major delivery company, and there are dozens of them, makes around 150 drops in the city each day, and some of them are time sensitive so the lorry may traverse the central road system many times around a tortuous one-way system. And that’s just parcel deliveries. Add on the major supermarkets being serviced by their trucks and their customers being served by home delivery, plus all the little independent providers, suppliers, the brewers drays — you can make a list that would fill half of this column. This must be the same in every major town in the country, and we are going to have to get used to traffic regulation, congestion charges and the like, all of which are simply token gestures in real terms because discouraging people from driving cars isn’t doing anything to curb customer demand and purchasing habits. This isn’t a political rant as politicians of all colours have their hand in creating the mess, from closing most railway branch lines, pushing deliveries onto ever inadequate roads and generally letting the freight transport infrastructure strangle itself and then blaming

the users who have no other choice. But I would vote for someone who has the guts to stand up and tell voters they just can’t have what exactly they want, when they want it. But I can’t see that happening anytime soon. Anyway, soapbox packed away for another month, back to more practical digital issues.

Bridging the gap

This month Adobe snuck in some more updates for those of us subscribing to the Creative Cloud. The advance of subscription over stand-alone purchase is these updates, not only regular improvements, but sometimes patches for things that might not have worked as well as they should. As digital developments progress at such a pace, it’s very easy for established software to be overtaken by progress in hardware from other directions. Where a few years was once a shelf life, a month is now a lifetime! One of the downsides though is with automatic updates something may sneak in and make a few unannounced changes without you realising it. Such was November’s revision for Bridge. I use Bridge all the time for sorting folders, checking customer file profiles, cataloguing as well as performing certain tasks via Photoshop using the Tool bar, like merging photos, creating a multi-image contact sheet and the like. So I was surprised to find one day some of these options weren’t available. Surely Adobe couldn’t have downgraded Bridge to make it less useful. A quick trip to the Adobe website was helpful as it revealed there were some new features I didn’t have either. A temporary glitch between one version and another must have been the culprit. So as not to flush baby out with the bathwater, Adobe always installs the latest version of its software alongside the other so they can actually work in parallel, but this can cause some confusion and possible conflict. It’s worthwhile checking the actual current serial number (in the Help tab) to see which version you have because it won’t always be as obvious as 2018, 2019 etc. And also check that any shortcuts direct you to the latest version. A computer restart sorted all the toys back in the box with the exception that I had to reset all my file type recognition settings (through Preferences > File Type Associations) so things opened from Bridge in the appropriate working space. There are a number of new features in Adobe Bridge 2020 but probably the most significant is a new way to export files directly. Previously, using the output module, you could create a multipage PDF for print. Now using a new dialogue box you can create an export preset and drag and drop many assorted files into it. Presently it only supports JPEG conversion but undoubtedly this will be changed in forthcoming updates as it is too useful a feature to ignore. You still have the option of converting files via a Photoshop action, with batch conversion, or image processor, but this is a development unique to Bridge.

vivid-online.com

Batch renaming in the same, or moving to another folder is retained, as is the option to create a multiple image contact sheet with titles. All of these features are invaluable for sorting files in folders for printing, and selecting individual images out of a batch which can be moved or colour coded. The Contact Sheet was dropped by Adobe for a while until howls of protest from photographers demanded its return and it really is a feature more than useful. It retains its pre-digital name from darkroom days, which may be lost on modern folk, but in the days when we handled strips of film and an enlarger, we used to preview a whole film by placing the batch together on photographic paper pressed tight under a glass and exposing the lot briefly to light. Hence the direct contact with the paper produced a positive same size as the neg. Nice of Adobe to doff a cap at tradition. Dodge and Burn are other examples of the days when we were literally hands on! Always makes me smile when some people go on about the magic of film because I remember the hours I used to spend laboriously doing things that now take seconds. Bridge now also has a new search bar drop-down beside the quick search bar icon for improved accessibility. Also, within the drop-down, you now have an option called Advanced Search which leads you to the Find panel. In the Find panel, you can fill in the source details, the search criteria, and the result match options. It also now shows transparency in Photoshop documents. You can see checkerboard thumbnails and previews for transparent .PSD files that were earlier replaced with a matte white background. A small but useful improvement for checking file types when faced with lots of them. If you haven’t used Bridge much you really need to get into it to improve your workflow https://helpx.adobe.com/bridge/using/whats-new/2020.

Vivid Laminating new Technical Director

Jim Todd steps down as Heidelberg Director

Vivid Laminating Technologies Ltd, has announced the appointment of long-term team member, Gavin Ward, as Technical Director. The move comes as the company gears itself toward putting more emphasis on its research and development side of the business, with plans and aspirations to bring many more exciting new technologies to market in the coming months and years. On his recent appointment, Gavin said “I’m incredibly proud to take up the position of Technical Director. For a little over 10 years I have either been directly involved or managing the research and development side of this business and have overseen the development of systems and patented functionality such as; the award winning Matrix Pneumatic as well as it’s Duplex variants, the Matrix Metallic, Easymount Air and the integration of our Magnum range. It’s come to a point where we’re working on many cutting edge ideas, and we need to dedicate more time and resource to R&D. The team and I are very much looking forward to the challenge!”. Since his arrival at Vivid, over 22 years ago, Gavin has seen plenty of change and growth within the business and is very complimentary of the Vivid team and the core values of the company. “We’re a family run business, with many of the team being here for as long I have, in a few cases even longer! Our values have never changed and it’s why we continue to retain and attract new customers. First and foremost, we’re customer focussed, we work closely with our customers to hear their feedback and suggestions, we take on board and listen to their ideas, which enables us to ultimately design and build systems that really do make a difference”. www.vivid-online.com

Heidelberg UK has announced that Jim Todd has stepped down from his role as Sales Director, bringing the curtain down on a role he held for 19 years and a career with the manufacturer for 24 years. Jim Todd said: “I am grateful for the opportunity to work with Heidelberg, the Board of Directors, and our executive team. Nineteen years is a long time in one job! A lot has changed in our portfolio of products and services since 2000, and that combined with the profile of a continuously consolidating market, has driven the ongoing evolution in our sales strategy and kept the changes ringing. However, now is as good a time as any to try something new!” Ryan Miles, Managing Director of Heidelberg UK, said: “Jim has been a great ambassador for our brand, and we would like to thank him for his contribution to our business over the years. We wish him the best in all his future endeavours, Miles continues: “A benefit of good succession planning is that we have continuity in key customer facing positions and we are therefore able to ensure that our focus remains on delivering a best in class customer experience.” Regional Sales Managers Neil Fletcher and Phil Buttress, who have been mentored and developed by Jim over the years, have taken on greater sales leadership roles and will be directly supported by the Managing Director Ryan Miles, who says: “Neil and Phil are well experienced in our market and have both been well prepared and equipped to deliver our exciting strategy and new business models to customers. With their contribution our focus remains on shoring up Heidelberg’s industry leading position and on putting the customer at the centre of everything we do. www.heidelberg.co.uk

Launch event

THE ROYAL ACADEMY SCHOOLS CELEBRATE WITH EPSON Royal Academy Schools begins its 250th Anniversary celebrations with exclusive Epson-sponsored Private Viewing and Tour.

[T]

he Royal Academy Schools officially launched its 250th anniversary celebrations on 13th November by hosting an exclusive launch event for friends of the RA Schools, students, artists, patrons and the media – an event that included a tour and private viewing of its Burlington House teaching and production facilities and its purpose built state of the art Epson Digital Media Suite. A number of respected artists and current Royal Academy students were also on hand throughout the evening to share their experiences of digital printing and the role it increasingly plays in the development of their careers as professional artists. Says Mark Hampson, painter and print maker and Head of Fine Art Processes at the Royal Academy Schools: “In 2018, the Royal Academy itself celebrated its 250th anniversary through its RA250 UK campaign, and this year, we have begun celebrating the 250th anniversary of the RA Schools. On the 13th November, in conjunction with our partner, Epson, we hosted an exclusive private viewing of the Schools’ facilities, which was incredibly well received. It was a rare opportunity for artists, patrons and supporters of the schools to get a real ‘behind the scenes’ understanding of the way we work with our students. The RA is a charity and therefore relies on the generosity of its patrons to continue training some of the most up and coming artists, so the Epson relationship is a very important one for us. The launch event was a great chance to demonstrate the depth and strength of this relationship to a much wider audience than usual.” Says Nick White, Business Manager, Professional Graphics, Epson: “The Royal Academy School exemplifies the values we also hold true at Epson – the desire to continually push the boundaries of what is possible – to ‘exceed your vision’. The Epson Digital Media Suite is a fantastic example of what can happen when all the best in technology and creativity come together seamlessly. It provides the perfect environment for the Schools’ students to keep confidently pushing their artistic

boundaries. We congratulate the RA Schools on its first 250 years of artistic excellence and we are very excited to be working so closely with this respected institution as they begin the next 250 years in their evolution.” Concludes Mark Hampson: “The Royal Academy Schools is the longest established art school in the UK and opens its doors to up to 17 post graduate artists each year, each of who participate in an intense three year programme. We remain committed to providing a free and open, informed and critical environment for the personal and professional development of each artist and we are very proud of the heritage of the School and the solid foundation it has given so many artists who have gone on to great critical and commercial success. We are very much looking forward to celebrating this success with students past and present and all our supporters over the coming weeks and months.” www.epson.co.uk

For visitors that are keen to source bespoke headwear stand P62 will be a key destination, with the company showcasing a vast array of products from baseball caps to various styles of knitted hats, with different embellishment techniques from flat embroidery to the latest high frequency finishes. Company director Tony Marks notes that exhibiting at the show is the perfect way to explore a new market and meet new people: “Printwear & Promotion LIVE! is the industry’s main UK show with a huge range of exhibitors and attendees. We are impressed with the diversity of organisations and individuals attending and look forward to sharing our expertise.” As a previous exhibitor with another company, Kevin Borrett has decided to use the show as the launch pad for his new venture — Insignia 16. The company specialises in embroidered, woven and thermal transfer printed patches and will be showcasing samples on stand P60, where visitors can also find out about the

bespoke services and finishing options on offer. Also among the debutants at the 2020 show are B1 Bespoke (A58), Master Grave (H72), SDL Group (H52) and new brands, Work-Guard and Safe-Guard (C20). In addition to those making their first appearance at the event, a number of companies will be welcomed back into the Printwear & Promotion LIVE! fold after a period of absence including Atlantis — Master Italia (J50), Kingly (J3), P&P Clothing (A72), R.A. Smart (F52), Smartwear Solutions (A32), The Outdoors Company (F60), as well as Spall Sports and Banner. On stand F64, visitors will be able to see and feel for themselves the company’s newly launched APTUS Essentials entry level sportswear range as well as items from the APTUS Performance collection. Howard Wilder, sales director, notes: “We

are most looking forward to reacquainting ourselves with the visitors to P&P LIVE!.” Plus, so much more! As the event launches into a new decade, it will continue this tradition with a number of lively and informative feature areas offering invaluable information, tips and tricks for both established printwear companies and newcomers alike. The show will once again feature two seminar suites — The Decoration Advice Suite and The Knowledge Centre — both with an all new lineup of speakers and topics tailored for the market in 2020 and beyond. The Screen Print Workshop will also return, giving novice and expert screen printers alike an unique opportunity to witness live printing demos and seminars covering a range of interesting topics. Visitors will also have an opportunity to see the latest styles from leading suppliers in action in the show’s daily Fashion Shows, sponsored by Regatta Professional. [D]

elivered by new event director Jenny Matthew, working alongside Rudi Blackett as key account director and a new marketing team, SDUK 2020 promises visitors and exhibitors a fresh show with a new website, new layout, new features and new stand options. The show also has a new look for 2020. Completing the trilogy of its ‘building business face-to-face’ creative focus but with a fresh, contemporary design-led influence. The event organisers undertook a series of questionnaires and interviews with SDUK’s core audience to adapt the show’s features to reflect visitor and industry demand. Not only will the carefully curated new plan build upon SDUK’s existing markets, it will also expand the show’s appeal beyond its core audience to reach more visitors from textile production to end users in the creative, retail, lifestyle, education and local government sectors. One brand new feature for 2020 is TextileTech, a new learning zone focused on the expanding growth market of textile print and finishing. It will feature applications and demonstrations, skills workshops, industry speakers, marketing leading specialist exhibitors and a ‘textile trail’.

There will also be two brand new areas introduced at the 2020 show. First is Sign Making Essentials, a zone dedicated to showcasing the essential equipment and tools for signmaking, featuring specialist suppliers of fixings, fittings, tools, squeegees, cutters

and much more. Second is the Applications Gallery, where visitors can see a wide range of materials and substrates being used in a variety of creative application settings. Industry presentations, seminars and live demonstrations will grow further for 2020, to enable visitors to build their skills and knowledge and support innovation all year round, with many new features being revealed in the lead up to the show. Keep an eye on the new Sign & Digital UK website for news. Jenny Matthew, event director at SDUK commented: “We’re investing strongly in our long-standing and much loved Sign & Digital UK event, to help us deliver more for both visitors and exhibitors in 2020. With a new marketing and sales team to help grow the show, we’re also taking a fresh look at the show to help elevate it to the next level. Hull Signage minimising carbon footprint Designs Signage Solutions says it’s growing year on year, at the same time as reducing its carbon footprint owing to significant investment in the latest technological solutions from HP. Founded 26 years ago by Rob Daysley, the Hull based business is known for its sports stadium signage and branding, with work also spanning vehicle graphics, commercial, retail and education signage, and high end interior displays. Over the past decade it has developed its sustainability programme which includes sourcing its electricity from on-site solar panels, running three electric vehicles, recycling all its cardboard and plastic waste, and using eco-friendlier printing technology. Over nine years ago Designs invested in its first HP Latex printer and this year installed a new HP Latex R2000 Plus printer, a hybrid solution designed to offer high quality printing on an extensive range of rigid and flexible substrates. Designs also runs an HP Latex LX1500 3.2m-wide roll to roll system and two HP Latex 570 64” roll to roll machines alongside other printing

and finishing equipment. All the HP Latex printers were purchased from Designs Signage’s preferred supplier Papergraphics. Designs Signage Solutions’ Managing Director Rob Daysley explains that Designs initially chose HP Latex technology for its green credentials: “The water based inks used on HP Latex printers are better for the environment, better for people, and better for disposal, which are all big ticks for us.

“People are more interested in their impact on the planet and are looking for more sustainable products and services, so this is something we’ve driven in our industry. It gives our business the competitive edge while also benefiting the environment. We want our carbon footprint to be as small as possible.” Many of the environmental gains come from HP Latex waterbased odourless inks, which help businesses such as Designs

Signage run their operations in a sustainable way. This innovative ink technology addresses the full spectrum of environmental concerns; from ink chemistry and indoor air quality — both for print production and display - to lifecycle considerations. Rob Daysley adds that the ecological benefits of HP Latex ‘do not in any way compromise performance, quality or price’. www.designs.uk.net www.hp.com

The Weird and Wonderful World of 3D printing 3D printing has been touted as being a manufacturing cure all for a whole host of different applications. The reality is very different, but this doesn’t stop the onslaught of news articles proclaiming 3D printing to be the answer. Here’s a roundup of the weird and wonderful world of 3D printing in 2019. 3D printing: the cure for baldness? — US dermatologists in Columbia University have used 3D printing to try to find a solution for a common but often overlooked complaint: baldness. Finding a cure for this pervasive medical condition remains elusive, in part because of the difficulty encountered when researchers try to culture hair follicles in the lab to explore new treatments. Unlike mouse or rat cells taken from the base of hair follicles, human cells do not produce hair cells when cultured. As Angela Christiano, a professor of dermatology at Columbia’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, explains, “Cells from rats and mice grow beautiful hairs, but for reasons we don’t totally understand, human cells are resistant”. As one potential solution to baldness could be culturing hair in a lab before transplantation, overcoming human cells sluggishness could unlock the cure. Christiano and colleagues have enlisted the benefits of 3D printing to try to solve this challenge, as “previous fabrication techniques have been unable to create such thin projections so this work was greatly facilitated by innovations in 3D printing technology” explained Erbil Abachi, first author on the paper published in Nature Communications. Although this process requires optimisation, the team are confident that it could pave the way for new transplantation techniques — which are currently limited by the number of donor hairs — or provide a new laboratory environment for the testing and screening of drugs to treat the men and 30 million women in the United States currently affected by baldness. Affordable chocolate 3D printers — Another

application area that occasionally hits the headlines but generally stays under the radar of public consciousness is 3D printing of food, but a German startup, Print2Taste has launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring the mycusini, a chocolate 3D printer, into to homes globally. The mycusini 3D Choco has a price point of €198 and is expected to ship to backers by the end of the year. “With our many years of experience in the professional field of 3D food printing, we want to make the benefits of this amazing technology available to everybody”, said Print2Taste’s Eva Schlosser. “With mycusini, consumers will get access to the creative world of 3D Choco printing at a very attractive price.” How does the mycusini work? Like all 3D food printers, it extrudes small amounts of chocolate in a layerwise fashion. Because the required viscosity of the extruded chocolate is very specific, the material compatible with the mycusini comes in the form of “Choco refill” cartridges that are only available from Print2Taste. In addition, the formulation differs from most chocolate as instead of cocoa butter, other vegetable fats such as coconut fat are used so that curing takes place more quickly. Both of these features may pose a significant

barrier to adoption, however, Print2Taste are working on a “true” chocolate refill that uses cocoa butter. 3D printing vitamins — In a very similar vein, 3D printing can be used to create custom supplement formulations. This is the concept being developed by Remedy Health, who demonstrated their 3D printer nourish3D at the IDTechEx Show! in Berlin 2019. Remedy Health offer customers a bespoke tailor made seven layer gummy snack, with each layer containing a different nutritional supplement or vitamin to address any deficiencies in their diet. Customised 3D printed supplements delivered to your door on a subscription model appeals to a younger demographic who are increasingly conscious of their health, but want a solution that is tailored to their requirements, and flexible enough to change frequently as these needs evolve. 3D printing is the perfect technology to enable this, as cofounder and CEO Melissa Snover explains, “With Nourish3D, I think we have now found a very good use case for food 3D printing, which makes a better go to market option than what is currently readily available. The new concept actually gets people the exact nutritional supplements they want and need without any extras or wastage. It’s a sugar free, plastic free, vegan solution”. However, strangely enough, only buying what you need looks set to incur a significant price premium, with a rolling fee of £39.99 or annual monthly fee of £30, making this product only really suitable for the very health conscious with significant disposable income. Of course, 3D printing is more than the headline grabbing applications, and IDTechEx cover the full range of different printers, materials and various use cases in their range of market research reports. For more information about all aspects of 3D printing research, visit www.IDTechEx.com/ research/3D

USA & UK lead in 3D printing Ultimaker, a global leader in desktop 3D printing, has released its first annual 3D Printing Sentiment Index. Independent research conducted by Savanta, an international research firm, details a comprehensive view of the current and future potential for 3D printing in 12 countries worldwide, while covering the widest range of verticals and professions, including education. The quantified index reveals the USA, UK, and Germany have the highest overall index score and therefore the greatest expectations for implementing additive manufacturing and capitalising on its opportunities. The survey highlighted that, while the UK is largely on par with the rest of the leading countries in terms of awareness and adoption levels, British respondents demonstrated a measurably higher positive perception of the technology. 87% believe that 3D printing can offer extensive benefits in bringing new concepts and design ideas to life; 77% agree that 3D printing offers a much more effective way of making jigs, tools and fixtures than traditional methods; and 74% that 3D printing is the most efficient way to produce small batches of products and components. www.ultimaker.com

Protect Safety Signs Protect Safety Signs, a leading suppliers of temporary traffic management signs to the emergency services sector, has recently bought and installed two Océ Colorado 1640 printers. In operation for more than 20 years, Protect Safety Signs is always looking to improve each and every aspect of the business through investing in new technology to boost turnaround times. The company looked to Canon’s partner ADAPT (Amari Digital Printing Technologies) to upgrade its current print systems to improve productivity and service quality. After serious consideration, Protect Safety Signs opted to install two Canon printers through ADAPT to double the efficiency of its production process and increase its print capacity. Andy Roberts, General Manager of Protect Safety Signs, commented: “We are extremely happy with the installation of the two Colorado 1640s. Before working with Canon, we had never been able to reliably print and rewind a whole 50m roll of printed media. But, the Colorado 1640 has transformed our print capabilities and we can now print much faster — 114m² per minute — without the level of quality being compromised. This change has been such a positive step for the business and we are extremely impressed with the outcome.” With several contracts that require high volumes of print materials in a short time frame, the investment in flatbed printing and cutting edge machinery has enabled Protect Safety Signs to keep up with demand, while streamlining processes. Key benefits from the installation of the Océ Colorado 1640: The UVgel print technology increases productivity and speed while using less ink and still delivering an improved colour gamut Consistently fast output speeds and rapid job turnaround, delivering productivity only previously possible using multiple roll to roll engines or a larger flatbed print engine Combines quality, productivity and profitability: Produces instant dry highly durable and colourfast prints, with excellent aesthetics Can handle multiple jobs on one device: Duncan Smith, Canon UK’s Country Director for Production Printing Products said: “We are thrilled Protect Safety Signs has decided to install two Océ Colorado 1640 printers with our partner, ADAPT. To see the company’s print capacity increase, all while using less physical space is great. We are confident

Protect Safety Signs’ business will continue to soar following the installation of the printers, enabling them to deliver outstanding results.” www.canon.co.uk

GMG launches new proof media GMG ProofMedia studio line has recently been enriched by a new media: GMG ProofMedia studio OBA semiMatte 200 — a substrate perfectly suited for proofing of products printed on coated material containing optical brightening agents (OBAs), such as magazines, brochures, or packaging. As both job and publication printing depend on proofing with OBA media, GMG’s latest addition to its wide-ranged proof media portfolio is the ideal substrate for users in these fields. GMG ProofMedia studio OBA semiMatte 200 aligns smoothly with thickness and coating of typical production papers in publication printing due to its light grammage, flat-matte surface texture, and a slight gloss. Thanks to precise development and years of experience in the proofing market, GMG has produced a proof media qualified for all application fields within FOGRA 51. GMG ProofMedia studio OBA semiMatte 200 is the designated successor of semiMatte light, a proof media of former GMG ProofPaper

line. As industry trends had already indicated when GMG’s studio line first was launched in 2017, the use cases of previous semiMatte light were demanding for the introduction of optical brightening agents. With new GMG ProofMedia studio OBA semiMatte 200, the main areas of application of past GMG ProfPaper semiMatte light can now be covered by an improved substrate offering the well-known quality and consistency of GMG products. GMG ProofMedia studio OBA semiMatte 200 will be orderable starting December 1st, 2019. The media will be available in rolls of 35 metre length and the following widths: 17”, 24”, and 44”. Software support of GMG ProofMedia studio OBA semiMatte 200 starts with GMG ColorProof 5.11.2 and GMG OpenColor 2.3. www.gmgcolor.com/products/proofmedia

READERS’ SCRIBES

SOMETHING TO SHARE…? Covering the Bird We visited our newly married daughter, who was preparing her first Thanksgiving dinner. I noticed the turkey thawing in the kitchen sink with a dish drainer inverted over the bird. I asked why a drainer covered the turkey. Our daughter turned to my wife and said, “Mum, you always did it that way.” “Yes,” my wife replied, “but you don’t have a cat!”

Can’t Win Mother-In-Laws My mother-in-law sent me two sweaters for Christmas. When she came for a visit, I put on one of the sweaters. The first thing she said was, “What’s the matter? Didn’t you like the other one?”

Christmas Wish List The older sister asks her younger brother, “What are you giving Mum and Dad for Christmas?” Without missing a beat, the little brother replies, “A list of everything I want.”

Forever Friends On New Year’s Eve, Georgie stood up in the local bar and said that it was time to get ready. At the stroke of midnight, she wanted everyone to be standing next to the one person who made their life worth living. As the clock struck 12, chaos erupted as the barman was almost crushed to death.

According to the dog that walks the man in our house,

Santas Shorts

Knock Knock! Who’s There? Snow! Snow who? Snow laughing matter. Never catch snowflakes with your tongue until all the birds have gone south for the winter. What goes “oh oh oh”? Santa walking backwards Where does Santa keep his money? A snow bank. What did the little elves have to do when they got home from school? Gnome-work! What do you call a bunch of chess players bragging about their games in a hotel lobby? Chess nuts boasting in an open foyer Who delivers Christmas presents to dogs? Santa paws! What cars do elfs drive? A toy-ota. Who delivers Christmas presents to cats? Santa claws! Why does Santa have three gardens? So he can ho ho ho What do you call buying a piano for the holidays? Christmas Chopin. What do you learn at Santa’s Helpers school. The elf-a-bet What do you call a can that has the Christmas spirit? A Merry can. What did Santa say when he got stuck? Ho Ho Helllpppppp!. What did Santa sing when he went down the chimney? “Chestnuts roasting over an open fire... How do you help someone who has lost the Christmas spirit? Nurse them back to elf. Where does Santa and his reindeer go to get hot chocolate while flying in the sky? Star-bucks Why was the ornament addicted to Christmas? He was hooked on trees his whole life.

it’s a five-minute walk from our house to the pub.

What do you call a snowman that can walk? Snow-mobile. What does Miley Cyrus eat at Christmas? Twerk-ey! What does a Pirate Santa say...? “Row row row..” What do hip hop artists do on Christmas? Unwrap. What do you call an elf that sings? ELFIS Why wouldn’t Santa ride his sleigh? For elf and safety concerns. What did Santa Claus say to his wife? Its going to reindeer. Watching Miracle on 34th Street makes me so Santa-mental.

I’ve been Sleighed

How come you never hear anything about the 10th reindeer “Olive”? Olive? Yeah, you know, “Olive the other reindeer, used to laugh and call him names”

Milking The Cow

A farmer was milking his cow. He was just starting to get a good rhythm going when a bug flew into the barn and started circling his head. Suddenly, the bug flew into the cow’s ear. The farmer didn’t think much about it until the bug squirted out into his bucket. It went in one ear and out the udder.

Dear Santa

Dear Santa, for this year I’m requesting a BIG bank account and a SMALL body. P.S. Please don’t mix them up like you did last year.

It’s a 35-minute walk from the pub to my house.

Not Just For Christmas

A guy spots a sign outside a house that reads, “Talking Dog for Sale.” Intrigued, he walks in. “So what have you done with your life?” he asks the dog. “I’ve led a very full life,” says the dog. “I lived in the Alps rescuing avalanche victims. Then I served my country in Iraq. And now I spend my days reading to the residents of a retirement home.” The guy is flabbergasted. He asks the dog’s owner, “Why on earth would you want to get rid of an incredible dog like that?” The owner says, “Because he’s a liar! He never did any of that!”

The Member of Parliament At a restaurant one night, the man at the next table was pulling out all the stops to impress his underwhelmed date. He crowned a lengthy list of lifetime achievements by stating, “At least I can say I have been a member of Parliament. The woman nodded. “I’ll make a note of that: ‘has-been member of Parliament.’”

International Sarcasm

“Sarcasm will get you nowhere in life,” my boss told me. “Well it got me to the ‘International Sarcasm’ finals in Santiago, Chile in 2019,” I informed him. “Really?” he asked. “No,” I said.

The difference is staggering.
