Pantone reveals Colour of the Year for 2014
PANTONE has announced PANTONE 18-3224 Radiant Orchid, a captivating, magical, enigmatic purple, as the colour of the year for 2014. “While the 2013 colour of the year, PANTONE 17-5641 Emerald, served as a symbol of growth, renewal and prosperity, Radiant Orchid reaches across the colour wheel to intrigue the eye and spark the imagination,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute. “An invitation to innovation, Radiant Orchid encourages expanded creativity and originality, which is increasingly valued in today’s society.” “An enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health. It is a captivating purple, one that draws you in with its beguiling charm.” Radiant Orchid for Fashion — Radiant Orchid’s rosy undertones radiate on the skin, producing a healthy glow when worn by both men and women. A dazzling attention getter, Radiant Orchid permeated the runways during the
spring 2014 fashion shows and is already making its way onto the red carpet. Fashion designers featured in the PANTONE Fashion Colour Report Spring 2014, including Emerson by Jackie FraserSwan, Juicy Couture and Yoana Baraschi, are incorporating Radiant Orchid into their spring collections and variations of this hue will carry into men’s and women’s clothing and accessories throughout next year. Radiant Orchid for Beauty — A modern and surprisingly versatile shade, Radiant Orchid enlivens the skin, making all who wear it feel more healthy and energetic. Blending both cool and warm undertones, purple is an appealing hue for distinctive combinations and flattering to many hair, eye and skin tones. This multifaceted hue is seductive when combined with red and pairs well with its sister shades of lavender, purple and pink, which provides an assortment of lipstick and blush options. Radiant Orchid’s exuberance also acts as a brilliant finishing touch to nails. Radiant Orchid for Interiors — Spruce up interior spaces by incorporating this eye-catching hue in paint, accent pieces and accessories. As adaptable as it is beautiful, Radiant Orchid complements olive and deeper hunter greens, and offers a gorgeous combination when paired with turquoise, teal and even light yellows. Likewise, the vibrant colour is sure to liven up neutrals including grey, beige and taupe. Uplifting and bold without being overpowering, Radiant Orchid re-energises almost any colour palette and provides a unifying element for diverse spaces. Cross-Referencing to Other PANTONE Libraries PANTONE 18-3224 Radiant Orchid can also be cross-referenced to all other PANTONE Libraries including PANTONE PLUS for graphic design. Konica Minolta sponsor Bride Foundation
KONICA Minolta has formed a new partnership agreement with the St Bride Foundation to open up new initiatives that will inspire future generations about the value of print as a key part of the communications mix. At a reception attended by almost 100 people at St Bride Foundation, off Fleet Street in the City of London, Konica Minolta announced it had become the ‘Platinum Print Heritage Partner’, as another example of its ongoing commitment to the print industry and lead-up to next year’s Ipex, where it is the single largest exhibitor. St Bride Foundation is a registered charity that provides a unique educational resource at the site in the City of London, which is steeped in the history of the printing industry. There is a library containing world class
exhibits, a workshop full of historic live running printing systems and regular performances are held in the Bridewell Theatre. The sponsorship from Konica Minolta will enable the St Bride Foundation – originally the home of the Printing School to build on its work to preserve the heritage and inspire the future. Glyn Farrow, Chief Executive at St Bride Foundation, said: “Konica Minolta is not only enabling us to preserve the heritage of one of the world’s foremost collections of printing artefacts, but it will inspire future generations to witness at first hand this incredible inspiration and understand future print technologies. We would encourage other companies to take Konica Minolta’s lead, which will mean we can provide even more educational initiatives such as guided tours and other events at what is the ‘home of print’.” Neil Dingley, Managing Director of Konica Minolta UK, said: “We are proud and delighted to become the first Platinum Print Heritage partner, which will enable St Bride Foundation to preserve the past and inspire the future. We understand the need to preserve the heritage of print, which today is an ever more important part of the wider communications mix. It will also give more opportunities for St Bride Foundation to inspire a younger generation to visit and be inspired.” He added: “This sponsorship also underpins our unwavering commitment to the printing industry, as well as the unveiling of another key initiative by Konica Minolta in the run-up to Ipex, where we are the single-largest exhibitor.” www.konicaminolta.co.uk

High street fast fashion with Epson
LIBERTY London and Topman Oxford Circus, in collaboration with all over print specialists Yr Store (www.yrsto.re/), have opened pop-ups within their flagship stores offering customers the chance to create and print their own bespoke t-shirts using Epson SureColor dye-sub printers — while they wait. Yr Store’s garment print installations feature interactive touch-pod design stations and live all over printing. Customers can create one off patterns
in-store from an archive of designs and images which are then printed and applied to t-shirts on-site and ready to go within a matter of minutes. The t-shirt designs are printed using Epson’s 44-inch SureColor SC-F6000 rollfed dye-sublimation printers. Supplied to Yr Store by specialist Epson re-seller RA Smart (www.rasmart.co.uk), these printers produce high-quality, vibrant images on all leading transfer papers. With output speeds from 16 to 57m2/ hr, depending upon application, the SC-F6000 is the ideal ‘on-demand’ print solution for the retail environment. The SureColor printers are easy to use and operate by just one person. The SureColor SC-F printers use Epson UltraChrome DS ink, a specially developed aqueous ink which produces outstanding images with vibrant colours, intense blacks, sharp contours and smooth gradations. Its excellent light and wash fastness, as well as resistance to abrasion and perspiration, makes it the ideal choice for t-shirt applications. “Yr believes the future of fashion is in carefully curated live garment creation,” says Yr Store’s Tim Williams. “Working with Epson technology means we can provide the highest quality product in super-fast time, offering customers a great retail experience and their own unique garment.” The Liberty concession is open till the end of December. Topman is a permanent installation and will be rolled out to other Top Shop stores throughout the country in 2014, with further printable garments being introduced such as sweatshirts, scarves and leggings. Martin Johns, ProGraphics, Epson UK, says: “Not only does the SureColor SC-F6000 deliver on performance, cost, reliability and flexibility, it also opens up new revenue streams for customers. Yr Store’s live garment print installations in Liberty and Topman are a perfect example of how Epson technology is assisting users to develop their creative ideas to expand their businesses further.” www.epson.co.uk

Heidelberg offers UK printers 2020 Vision HEIDELBERG will hold its Spring open house on Thursday 27 and Friday 28 March and is dubbing it 2020 Vision, an indication that it will bring greater clarity to some contentious issues but also look ahead to the shape of things to come as print competes in a multimedia environment. “The timing of the 2020 Vision Open House during Ipex will enable visitors to attend both events and maximise their visit to London. Heidelberg’s landmark event at our national showroom in March, will provide a forum where UK printers can look at some of the challenges and opportunities they will face as we head towards the next decade,” says Gerard Heanue, managing director. “We will be joined by paper, MIS, finance, print buyers and other suppliers to give a comprehensive range of insights and advice. This is an open house which will be relevant to both business and production management. The economy is improving but competition from alternative media is evolving so what will printing look like by 2020? Will it retain the same shape and
structure? How can printers make choices that improve efficiency and appeal to ensure they are part of that future? Printers can find out at the 2020 Vision event at Heidelberg UK.” Other companies involved in 2020 Vision include: Two Sides, HHS, IST, Morgana, Sappi, technotrans, Gallus, Tharstern, Santander, Print Financial Services, and Winters. In addition to demonstrations and exhibits there will also be a series of seminars to add value to the visit. A marquee adjacent to the national showroom will bring a touch of Heidelberg to Brentford providing German style fare which will be served from noon. But it is the issues-based agenda that will be the focus of the day. Heidelberg will outline its take on LE-UV, as well as developments in its Prinect workflow portfolio and there will be spotlight on the power of Polar PACE automation. This is just a taster at this stage. A full list of machines and more information on the demonstration and seminar agenda will be revealed in the next few weeks. 2020 Vision opening times: 10am-5pm on Thursday 27 March and 9am4pm on Friday 28 March. Visitors should register with Nicky Higgins by calling 020 8490 6030 or e-mail nicky.higgins@heidelberg.com
Mercury and the Beast MERCURY Signs & Designs, a full service graphic design and signage company based in Perth, Scotland has recently invested in a Roland SOLJET PRO4 XF-640 high performance wide format printer to boost capacity and enable it to meet the demands of a growing range of customers in the specialist commercial vehicle wrapping sector. Founded in 2000, the company has grown to become one of Scotland’s leading sign makers, offering a wide range of design and signage services. It has also built up an enviable reputation in the large-scale commercial vehicle wrapping sector, securing major contracts across Scotland to wrap fleets of buses, trucks, cranes and trams. The XF-640, purchased from Roland Authorised Dealer, Spandex, has joined a growing arsenal of production machines at the company, including a Roland VersaCAMM VP-300, a HP latex machine and a Grenadier wide format printer. Says Tracey Shanks, Partner, Mercury Signs & Designs: “We first saw the Roland SOLJET PRO4 XF-640, or ‘The Beast’ as it has been nicknamed, in action at Fespa 2013 in London earlier this year and were wholly impressed with its performance. We were at Fespa looking for a high production machine that would enhance our capabilities and give us the flexibility we need to grow our expertise and client base. “We have a number of contracts with large bus and tram operators and trucking firms and these are very demanding jobs – requiring speed, quality and precision. So, we needed a robust wide format machine we could completely rely on; one that would run from day one and keep running, regardless of what we threw at it. The Beast has
been an outstanding investment for us in this regard and we’ve been constantly impressed with its production ability. “In fact, since the installation, we have moved production of a lot of our large commercial contracts – wrapping buses and trams for example, from the HP latex machine to the XF-640, due to its phenomenal speed. When you’re faced with a tight turnaround, you still need as much time as possible for the wrapping of the vehicle itself – the finish has to be the best it can possibly be. The speed of The Beast means we have time to ensure that not only is the printing itself top quality, but we can also continue to deliver on our reputation for wrapping vehicles to the highest professional standard.” Designed for both outdoor and indoor applications and with a printing speed of up to
102m²/hr. with exceptional quality, the SOLJET PRO4 XF-640 is the ideal production tool for signs, banners, vehicle wraps, window graphics, POP displays, exhibition show graphics, posters and more. The Beast is compatible with Roland’s newest eco-solvent inks, ECO-SOL MAX2 for an expanded colour gamut and fast drying times and offers a dual mirrored CMYK ink configuration for consistent colour imaging. Tracey says the Mercury team has also been very impressed with Roland dealer, Spandex. A very smooth sales process, competitive pricing and comprehensive training and aftersales service were all cited as key factors in ensuring the Mercury had the confidence to once again invest in Roland technology. She concludes: “Put simply, The Beast just delivers on what it says it will, and in a high pressure production environment, the importance of this cannot be overstated. We wanted a powerful production machine that we could rely on; that could be trusted to keep producing high quality work at a great speed, with an easy learning curve and minimal maintenance. The Beast gives us all of this. It established itself very quickly as a shining light in the Mercury production family and we couldn’t be happier with its performance.” To find out more about Mercury Signs & Designs and its services please visit: http://www.mercurysigns.com/ To find out more about Roland DG and its SOLJET PRO4 XF-640 ‘beast’ please visit: www.rolanddg.co.uk/XF-640 or for further details about Roland Authorised Dealer Spandex please visit www.spandex.com/uk or call 0800 77 26 33.

New Ricoh Pro L4100 Large Format Printer Series
RICOH has announced the availability of its new Ricoh Pro L4100 latex large format printer series. The new roll-to-roll large format printer, officially available in the UK market from March 2014, comes in 130cm (53 inch) or 160cm (63 inch) widths and supports up to seven colours in various configurations. In addition to CMYK, orange, green and white inks are also available. The Ricoh Pro L4160 and L4130 deliver high print productivity and quality as a result of technological innovations which include the Ricoh piezo electric print heads. The series also meets the market need for products that reduce environmental impacts printing through its use of aqueous latex ink and ability to operate with low power consumption. Stephen Palmer, Director, Production Print, Ricoh UK & Ireland Ricoh UK says, “Following the early reveal, at drupa 2012, of our intention to grow our portfolio with the system, the Ricoh Pro L4100 series has been through Ricoh’s rigorous quality
assurance process, and we have been assimilating the positive customer feedback we received. As well as being ideally suited for the specialist signage market, we are particularly excited to be able to offer print services providers in the UK another solution to support their business growth and offer new services such as display and signage to their clients.” The Ricoh Pro L4100’s latex ink is an aqueous (water-based) ink which contains a low level of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). It has no odour and the low curing temperature of 60°C ink enables both quick drying, for a fast job turnaround, and the ability to print on many heatsensitive substrates without damaging them. The extensive array of media includes PVC, tarpaulin, synthetic paper, coated-paper, uncoated paper, film, textiles and more. In addition, it allows the use of lighter weight substrates, thus reducing overall costs, including shipping. Ricoh is expanding the range of compatible substrates
through its continuing media profiling and testing programme in partnership with Colour Concepts, an industry standard for media validation. “Ricoh latex inks offer outdoor durability of one to two years, or two to three years with lamination. With white ink,” says Palmer, “printers’ clients benefit from brilliant colour on all substrates including transparent and dark materials - for signage, branded materials and window displays. And the addition of orange and green extends the colour gamut to encompass a wider range of vibrant colours, ideal for both indoor and outdoor materials, and to reproduce corporate colours accurately.” Using Ricoh’s latest generation of high quality stainless steel multiple jetting piezo inkjet heads, three different drop sizes are produced at once, with drops as small as four picolitres. The result is smooth, lifelike images every time. The small drop size also enables production of smooth gradations and fine details, including fine lines and small fonts. The Ricoh Pro L4100’s Uninterrupted Ink Supply System (UISS) adds to the productivity of the printer. “When one CMYK ink cartridge runs out of ink, the system switches automatically to the second cartridge of the same colour for unattended printing,” says Palmer. “In a busy print production environment, this ensures that the operation runs as smoothly and productively as possible with minimal operator intervention.” The Ricoh Pro L4100 is available with the ColorGATE RIP. “We are providing ColorGATE as a bespoke menu-driven RIP that allows users to choose the exact feature set they need,” Palmer explains. “It is intuitive, reducing the learning curve and improving productivity. And it includes excellent colour management tools ideal for demanding commercial print environments.” For more information, visit www.ricoh.co.uk

Major 3D update to Adobe Photoshop ADOBE has unveiled new 3D printing capabilities in Adobe Photoshop CC. By radically simplifying the 3D print process, Photoshop CC will become the go-to tool for anyone who wants to print a 3D model. Available immediately, as part of a major update to Adobe Creative Cloud, the new 3D printing capabilities integrated in Photoshop CC enable Creative Cloud members to easily and reliably build, refine, preview, prepare and print 3D designs, setting the stage for explosive growth in the 3D printing market. The new 3D printing capabilities also help creatives to design in 3D from scratch or refine an existing 3D model and produce beautiful, printready 3D models using familiar Photoshop tools. Automated mesh repair and support structure generation ensure models will be produced
reliably, while accurate previews allow designers to submit print jobs with confidence. “The new 3D print capabilities in Photoshop CC take the guess work out of printing 3D models for everyone,” said Winston Hendrickson, vice president products, Creative Media Solutions, Adobe. “Before today there was a gap between the content produced by 3D modeling tools and what 3D printers need in order to deliver high quality results. Now, by simply clicking ‘Print’ in Photoshop CC, creatives can bring 3D designs to the physical world.” With this release of Photoshop CC, designs can be printed to a locally connected 3D printer or via built-in access to online 3D print services. Photoshop CC supports the most popular desktop 3D printers, such as the MakerBot Replicator, and also supports the full range of high quality

New products on show from Duplo at London Calling 5i included the following. 500i Duetto System: Duplo’s latest evolution of its “Duetto” system, featuring both collator towers and the recently launched DSF-2200 sheet feeder. The new DSC-10/60i collator towers enable users to perform custom applications and fulfill a variety of unique job requirements
by using the Intelligent Multi-Bin Feeding (IMBF) feature that comes standard with the PC Controller software. How big is yours? HERE at QPP we love road testing bargains to recommend to our 36,000 professional print readers and had been looking to upgrade our PC monitor viewing. The invitation to plug and play the new range of displays from BenQ who are launching A Full Range of Eye-Care Monitors Utilising Flicker-free Technology; Senseye® Reading Mode; Eye Protect Sensor www.benq.co.uk. Amazingly out test model, the BenQ 2411 LED is available at a target price of around £250. Brilliant for checking our QPP data base as we can search on postcodes and still see the name and ID number all to view without having to scroll from left to right. Widescreen has my vote and if used on your front desk in your print room looks bang up to date too. BenQ, the global LED monitor manufacturer, have announced the availability of fourteen Flicker Free, Eye-Care monitors in its product range. The BenQ Eye-Care series with models from 20” through to 27” inch screens enables computer users to improve their productivity by reducing eye strain and unwanted headaches from heavy screen usage often associated with flickering monitors. Now this revolutionary technology is available for all customers from entry level consumers, enthusiast gamers through to corporate customers at affordable prices.
WHY FLICKER FREE? Flicker, or a flashing effect, occurs as the LED backlight controller of a monitor adjusts to the changes in brightness level. A regular monitor backlight can cause fast backlight flickering at
200Hz per second when brightness is reduced from the maximum level. When this happens, the human eye, sensitive to the slightest signals, strains the ciliary muscle trying to adjust to the nearly invisible flickering on the screen. This might lead to eyestrain, eye fatigue or headaches. BenQ’s new Flicker-free monitors adopt a unique De-flickering Backlight Circuit Controller for a zero-flickering viewing experience and in turn help reduce the eye health concerns raised by a fastflickering display and/or prolonged usage of PCs and notebooks. The use of a Flicker-free monitor with a computer or a notebook offers a better view and a more comfortable viewing experience for all. Flicker Free Range: ensure optimal resolution for the screen certain models will include a digital cable in the box either HDMI or DVI depending on the relevant model. All this is part of BenQ’s commitment to Eye Care. There are fourteen models in the Eye-Care Series with Flicker Free Technology. “It’s fantastic to be able to offer customers a
complete range of monitors which include our Flicker Free technology. More and more people are spending long hours in front of their screens on a daily basis and our Eye-Care Series has been developed to deliver a healthier viewing experience. At BenQ we firmly believe that the use of a good monitor is crucial not for anyone working in front of a screen whether they are computer or notebook users,” said Bo Cramer, UK General Manager. “With fourteen models available from 20” through to 27” there really is a monitor for everyone. Our innovative technology which features in the Eye-Care Flicker Free monitors is backed by quality design at affordable prices making it a great choice for consumer or business customers.” (Incidentally Ed, we, at The Magazine Production Company, use BenQ as our first choice of monitor running 2 x 24” screens side-by-side to increase our workspace. We rate them highly for our magazine production work where colour accuracy is key.) www.BenQ.eu

SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST — CHANGE IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS
KEY REASONS TO VISIT IPEX 2014
WITH just several weeks to go, Ipex 2014 (24-29 March) is shaping up to be the definitive international print event in 2014. As print and its role in the multi-channel marcomms industry continues to evolve, Ipex arrives at the perfect time to provide printers of all sizes with the key tools, knowledge and inspiration to ensure a profitable business now and in the future. Here are the key reasons why Ipex 2014 should be pencilled into the diaries of anyone involved with print: • Ipex acts as a neutral platform for printers to compare the products and services of around 500 global manufacturers and suppliers in one place • Visitors will be able to see live demonstrations of some the latest cutting edge technologies that are driving the regenerating print industry • A comprehensive content programme will address the main issues that printers are facing today, with a plethora of insightful discussions and workshops to help attendees identify new business opportunities that will enable them to stand out from the crowd • The World Print Summit, senior level strategic thought leadership programme, will provide attendees with exclusive access to previously unheard content from industry experts on the trends and pitfalls revolutionising the industry • Work forces from SME printers will receive the support required to ensure their businesses have all the fundamental structures and processes in place to be a success. This is provided via the practical workshops at the Ipex 2014 Master Classes, overseen by Print Future’s Neil Falconer, helping delegates to improve profits and streamline production efficiencies • Once visitors have a blueprint to fine-tune their current print business, they have the opportunity to discover what the future of print holds. The Future Innovation zones showcase the printed products and technologies that
are set for rapid expansion over the next few years including photo products, digital print on packaging, 3D printing and printable electronics. Meanwhile leading futurologist and author Richard Watson, speaking at the World Print Summit, will explore the immediate future of print to help printers make the right strategic decisions before forecasting the print industry’s development over the next 25 years • Enhancing the Ipex experience, the event now hosts a range of additional exciting new features — including Inspiration Avenue, Eco Zone and the Make Ready Challenge — that will inspire and generate new ideas, while championing the art of print within the communications landscape • Networking is an essential component in making, developing and growing new business, and Ipex serves as the perfect forum for printers and suppliers from around the world to engage in mutually profitable discussions • The rapid rise of digital channels has created a new dawn for the marketing communications world and presents a number of new business opportunities for forward thinking printers. The co-located Cross Media Production event looks under the hood of cross media technologies and demonstrates how to implement a successful multi-channel marketing campaign with print at its heart
COMMENT by Trevor Crawford, Event Director of Ipex 2014: “The world is changing, and the key to survival is to change with it. The printing industry is no exception to this, having undergone seismic change over the past decade or so, which continues to present challenges to printers. From the research we have undertaken and the discussions I’ve had with industry representatives, the issues facing almost every printer, large or small, are generally the same around the world. These are well documented; declining volumes, overcapacity, commoditisation, pricing pressures, finance, as well as the on going competition and integration from the internet and other competitive communications channels. “Add to this the on going debate as to whether the global economy remains in recession or not and you might be forgiven for wanting to lie down in a darkened room. But, there are promising signs, especially in the economies of Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, and there are also areas of growth in many areas of print. Sectors such as direct marketing, packaging and label printing and print logistics, for example, are all looking strong. According to the latest ‘Printing Outlook’ published quarterly by the British Printing industries Federation (BPIF), printers in the UK are reporting improved confidence and renewed optimism. Likewise, the Printing Industries of
February 2014 | QUICK PRINT PRO | SHOWTIME | 19
America (PIA) which represents print businesses across North America, Canada and Mexico are reporting generally stable print volumes. As Dr Ronnie Davis, Chief Economist at the PIA told us: “We are experiencing modest growth here in the US, albeit at a low level of about 2.5%, but there are definitely green shoots in certain areas of the industry. “So, while there are undoubtedly challenges for all businesses to face up to, there is potential new business for companies willing to adapt. This coupled with a more optimistic economic outlook, and there are opportunities to be had for those willing to grasp them, a view firmly supported by Dr Davis. You can’t bring back the market, but you can adapt to the new challenges and manage that change.” “There are certainly many examples of companies that have successfully adapted to the new market conditions. These progressive companies have evolved their businesses to tackle issues head on. In the process, they’ve often identified cost efficiencies as well as developing new strategies, be that investment in the latest technology or entering into new markets which have enabled them to tap in to potential new revenue streams.”
INNOVATE TO DRIVE SUCCESS
INNOVATION is central to any successful business, and being able to invest in the latest technology solutions is essential to continue to raise the bar in terms of efficient, cost-effective production while delivering the very best quality print and customer service. Kathy Woodward, Chief Executive Officer at the BPIF believes driving efficiency is crucial. “It’s the primary investment focus for almost three-quarters of respondents to our latest Printing Outlook survey, which shows that there is continued investment in kit, training and product and process improvement in our industry.” Digital print and in particular, inkjet technology, is another key enabler for print businesses to respond to their customer’s increasing demands for shorter print runs, versioning and personalisation. Equally, the internet, once seen as the enemy of the printing industry, today has a vital part to play in a modern organisation. Every print business should be using the Internet to drive sales as well as market its services. In addition, web-to-print solutions are giving print businesses greater access to their customers as well as delivering a more efficient, streamlined and profitable business model. Financing this new technology in the current economic climate has often been a barrier to companies wanting to invest in the latest equipment, with traditional methods of raising capital putting huge strains on a business. However, by approaching this from a completely different angle, can pay dividends. Some companies are now looking at financing their investment on a pay-for-usage basis in partnership with their equipment suppliers. At the end of the day, this arrangement works well for all stakeholders being a win-win for everyone involved; printers can make use of the latest
technologies without a huge initial capital outlay; manufacturers can generate sales income that would otherwise not be possible; and customers get a much better range of services from their print provider. But it’s not just about the technology alone; an opinion shared by Neil Falconer, industry consultant and organiser of the Ipex 2014 Master classes. Neil, who has first-hand experience of working with printers across five continents, told us “The real issue for printers is how to maximise the technology they have, be that offset, digital, wide format or hybrid solutions, instil a culture of change throughout the entire organisation, and have the right business model in place to drive the company forward.” Kathy Woodward is also quick to recognise that it’s not just about investing in the latest equipment that holds the key to success, but strong leadership and responding to change. “Printing companies and the wider industry, are all working incredibly hard and creatively to develop the future of the printing industry. Chairman of the BAPC (British Association of Print & Communication) Sidney Bobb, believes it’s all about developing a USP. “It’s vital that printers today can differentiate themselves from their competitors, be that through investment in new technology, the latest software, or by introducing new value-added services.” This is a trend that is being adopted throughout the developed world, where companies are moving away from the more traditional, single print offering and in to areas such as database management and integrated media services. These new services complement its traditional print-based operation, enabling them to enter into the more lucrative sectors of integrated marketing services. This is a view also shared by Hagop Tchamkertenian, Economic Commentator and printing industry analyst based in Australia. According to Hagop, “The pivotal issue has been the failure of many print businesses to properly acknowledge their true role in the modern economy — that as an enabling communications solutions provider.” The concerted efforts of forward-thinking print businesses to develop new strategies and expand their reach, is paying off. In the US for example, the PIA has seen firsthand, that by adapting and evolving its offerings, members have successfully increased their businesses by anything from five to 20%. The feedback I’ve gained from the international print community is certainly pointing to strategic planning, a sound business model, differentiation as well as strong leadership to innovate and drive change as being the fundamental requirements for printer to not only survive, but to thrive.
IPEX 2014 — TO EDUCATE AND INSPIRE CHANGE
IF print businesses can recognise the growth areas, and have a strength and leadership to move forward, there is definitely the potential for growth. Ipex 2014, which itself has had to adapt to the new industry, is therefore well placed to inspire and educate printers for the future.
Not only as a showcase of the latest product enhancements and technology innovations, but also through a programme of seminars, workshops and master classes designed specifically to address current issues and equip printers with the tools needed to respond positively to the changing marketplace and ensure a long term, profitable future. For more information on Ipex 2014, which takes place from 24-29th March at the ExCeL London, UK, visit www.ipex.org

22 | DIGITAL IMAGING | QUICK PRINT PRO | February 2014
A focus on the future March sees a whole new start for a long established tradition. There has been an annual national photographic exhibition since the last century, and so there will be again in 2014 despite the closure of the traditional event by the original organisers.. Martin Christie looks a little closer at the picture…
S
QUEEZING ALMOST SEAMLESSLY into the dates at the NEC vacated by Focus on Imaging, the Photography Show is intended to be more than just the same event under a different name. True, many of the exhibitors will inevitably be the same, but the new management promises something more than new bottles, old medicine. Future Publishing has led modern consumer direct publishing in the UK and are likely to push for more widespread popular appeal, widening the range of exhibits and activities. It may not happen in the first year. An established exhibition carries its own momentum, and takes time to reflect changes. But it is likely to move with all the exciting developments, like 3D printing, that will make digital imaging so exciting over the next five to ten years. To be fair, Focus did a pretty good job over the last decade, of dragging the photographic industry into the twenty first century. Like most inherently conservative trades, it embraced the digital revolution reluctantly, almost as a novelty that would soon wear thin. But that reluctance was rapidly reflected by the many high profile casualties of big names like Kodak and Ilford who paid the consequent price. An industry slow to react to a digital future. Does that seem familiar? We still get press releases from people who seem to think they have invented digital overnight. Where have they been hibernating? Well the print industry has the excuse that it ultimately has to deal with paper and ink, real hard copy, not virtual images. But then it was thought that the use of computers would make paper redundant. Whatever happened to that idea? Although we communicate electronically twenty four seven, we still need to print things to see them properly, far from putting the newsagent out of business his shelves are full of publications about computers and the technology around them. Someone is buying them and absorbing the information or they wouldn’t justify the shelf space. The stark truth of the digital economy is that unless you are on the pace, you are falling behind. And even if you think you are on the pace, you may in fact be in the wrong race. That’s why it is vital to keep abreast of developments in related areas. As a company Future is a good example of a relatively new company, grasping new technology with both hands and taking full advantage of it.
Founded in the 1980s in Somerset, away from the established publishing houses in the south east, its magazine titles looked to modern pursuits like computers, games, and changing lifestyles and expectations, rather than just compete with the then popular shelf fillers. One novelty which soon became popular was the introduction of free software attached to the front cover of an appropriate publication. Much more useful than a sticker pack or a temporary tattoo. The forward looking policy paid off, reflecting the changes in products and customer demand, and moving with or ahead of it. By 2006, it was the sixthlargest media company in the United Kingdom. It currently publishes more than 150 magazines in fields such as video games, technology, automotive, cycling, films and photography. Future is also the official magazine company of all three major games console manufacturers, and any browser at the newsagents will find a good selection of its titles. Digital Camera is the UK’s best-selling monthly photography title in both print and digital form. Photography Week is the world’s best-selling digital weekly photography magazine. Practical Photoshop is the UK’s best-selling Photoshop magazine. N-Photo and PhotoPlus are the world’s best-selling Nikon and Canon magazines respectively. Future’s photography brands reach more than one million enthusiasts each month and our photography websites deliver more than 2.5 million page impressions as they like to say. So even without its other consumer titles, it has a pretty good marketing reach over the photography sector, both amateur and professional. Add on the other publications whose interests may overlap, and you have a gigantic promotional vehicle swinging into action to promote the event. Future promises that the Photography Show will be both a consumer and professional event and combine highly interactive features to entertain and engage consumers, with dedicated conferences and events for the trade and retailer attendees. It will be supported by a major six-figure marketing campaign, including targeting Future’s own leading technology brands T3 and TechRadar.com, which, as the UK’s biggest tech review site, reaches over four million tech enthusiasts every month. Future are promising a major advertising support package across their consumer magazines. Of course, you may think they can afford to if they publish them. But this is all to the good if it draws more people who had only the vaguest interest, and basic knowledge of digital imaging. I have been a regular visitor to Focus over the last ten years, and so rather than mourn its passing I am pleased another organiser has picked up the bouncing ball, and quite excited about the prospects under its new leadership. That’s why I am giving it a little page space, and why I am recommending that even if you can’t spend the time to go to the NEC in March, you send someone from your business just to have a look. They don’t have to be a keen photographer, in fact, it may even help to go with open eyes and no traditional prejudice. There can’t be many people now who don’t take some sort or photograph, whether a ‘selfie’ with a mobile phone, or a panorama sunset that could possible make a nice feature on the wall. Millions of photos are being taken every day now. It’s certainly a whole lot different from twenty years ago when the camera was dragged out twice a year for birthdays and Christmas. That reality is reflected in our customers, of course, with all the many varied images they may bring in to the counter, or enquire about in mail or phone call. But the digital democracy that has put photography in the hands of the masses had not taken technical education with it. The ability to point a device and press a button, doesn’t mean an understanding of what goes on after the button has been depressed. You don’t need to be an obsessive photography anorak, but a little more

knowledge than the average happy snapper can go a long way in explaining exactly why that lovely panorama won’t be possible at a metre wide on canvas. That’s why a visit to the Photography Show should be in the print room diary. You’ll come face to face with people who know, and are actually interested in helping you understand, not just sell you something you don’t need. Because of the broad nature of exhibitors and attendance, no one is expecting you to be an expert or assuming product knowledge and awareness which is often the case in many trade-only events. Focus was always a trade and retail event, but Future has moved the goalposts a little more in favour of the retail by making it a Saturday to Tuesday event rather than one that opened on Sunday and ran till the old traditional Wednesday trade day. Such traditions are no longer relevant, as the margins between the two audiences are not merely blurred but completely obscured. Far from being an issue, the mixture of the two I see as a major advantage, as those who make and market products come face to face with those who actually buy them. It’s a great reality check for those who would normally hide behind a public relations safety curtain. Further it’s a very direct forum to monitor face to face popular demand for product or otherwise. Just like facing random customers over the counter, you confront people who have a general expectation of what they want, but no specific idea of what they need or what it’s going to cost. Again, so unlike a dedicated trade show where both exhibitors and visitors have a pre-conceived idea of what they want to look at and what they want to spend. For that very reason, they may actually miss something they could really have needed. The fresh view with a new pair of eyes is often a worthwhile vista. The hardest thing Future will have been battling with is convincing long established Focus exhibitors not to have the same stand in the same place, and dragging them by the nose into a bit of a rethink on layout. First impressions are important, and if regular visitors walk into halls that look the way they always did, some will be disappointed. Inevitably a lot will look the same: the Nikon stand will still be yellow, Epson white and blue, Canon red. But a little bit of shuffling the pack will go a long way to expose more variety
in exhibition content. You’ll know that from visiting trade shows with the same kit in the same place with the same faces. Fine for stability, but not for innovation because often things that really are interesting may be overlooked by blinkered vision. I often find the more interesting things in the smaller stands tucked away down the sides, but you always have to explore to find them. So as a fresh visitor you need to make the best use of your shoe leather, but the leg work will have its rewards. Apart from the big flagship manufacturers and retailers, there will be a lot of varied items worth the attention of a print shop guest, and relevant to the daily menu of on demand digital output. Apart from capture and image and production of print, there’s all the finishing and presentation that are an essential part of modern after sales counter service, or if not, should be! Another part of drawing a wider audience is the whole concept of the long tail, I mentioned a column or two ago — reaching not a mass market with one product, but servicing a mass of customers with individual requirements. Probably thirty thousand people will pass through the halls at the NEC over the four days in March, with almost as many different requirements. But you can almost guarantee that sometime during the next twelve months, every one of them will want a print of something. That’s why it’s important to have an ear to the ground and an eye to the future. So much is happening at such a pace these days that no one in retail can afford to slip behind current and possible future trends. 3D printing, we know, is a coming thing. But even photobooks, which are almost old hat now, have still to approach the market saturation of other European countries, and part of that could be down to the conservative approach of many print shops. There is no reason a high street outlet can’t compete with web based competition because, regardless of price, the interaction with the customer is the essential equation, and one the counter service should exploit and promote. There will be plenty of that interaction going on at the NEC between 1st and 4th March. Make sure you don’t miss out on it. www.photographyshow.com

Arjowiggins Graphic recognised by WWF
ARJOWIGGINS Graphic, a leader in the development of environmental paper solutions, has been named as one of the 25 pulp and paper manufacturers which have followed WWF´s invitation to show leadership in transparency in the WWF Environmental Paper Company Index 2013. Through this index, WWF recognises Arjowiggins Graphic for promoting transparency on its ecological footprint for the production of pulp. WWF welcomes that by doing so, Arjowiggins Graphic demonstrates that it is taking environmental and social responsibility seriously. The EPCI is one of WWF’s key tools to promote transparency and to motivate continual improvement in the sector. The index identifies a company’s impact on forest ecosystems from fibre sourcing, its emissions from manufacturing
processes and corporate transparency. The results offer independent analysis of the paper industry that can help businesses to make an informed purchasing decision. Agnes Roger, Chief Executive, Arjowiggins Graphic, commented on the inclusion: “We are incredibly proud to be part of the WWF’s Environmental Paper Company Index as it is an extremely relevant and important part of measuring Arjowiggins Graphic’s environmental credentials. The EPCI has helped us to set ambitious goals and targets that have constantly pushed Arjowiggins Graphic to operate in a sustainable and transparent way.” Emmanuelle Neyroumande, Manager of WWF International’s pulp and paper work added: “We are pleased that has Arjowiggins taken this opportunity to disclose their sustainability performance and targets. The robust participation in this year´s Index shows a real interest by the companies in working towards reducing their ecological footprint.” www.arjowigginsgraphic.com
Tullis Russell Enviro Centre opens
SCHOOL children from Linlithgow swapped the classroom for a paper mill recently, as they visited employee owned papermaker Tullis Russell and the newly opened Tullis Russell Environmental Education Centre (T.R.E.E.) at Markinch. Twenty five primary 6 pupils and teachers from Linlithgow Bridge Primary, along with former paper mill workers from the Linlithgow area, spent a day at the T.R.E.E. Centre as part of their Papermaking Stories project. Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the project aims to educate the children on the rich paper making history their area once thrived on, and indeed how the industry has developed over the centuries. The group spent time using the newly launched interactive environmental displays at the T.R.E.E. Centre, whilst finding out more about the importance of sustainability and protection of the environment. This was followed by a visit to the Tullis Russell paper mill to get first-hand experience of a working mill and its own rich
history spanning some 204 years. Derek Guthrie, T.R.E.E. Centre Manager said: “Being the first educational visit by a school to our Centre, it was great to be able to link the visit with a project the kids were already involved with in the classroom and really bring the subject alive. The response from the children and staff was brilliant and we look forward to welcoming many more schools in future as we work to build the Centre into a valued educational and community resource.” Helena Gillis, co-ordinator of the Papermaking Stories Project added: “All the children thoroughly enjoyed the visit to The T.R.E.E. Centre and Tullis Russell as did the paper mill veterans who were able to reminisce about their own experiences working in Linlithgow mills. Paper making in Linlithgow dates from the seventeenth century and the Papermaking Stories project aims to educate and inspire the children about the economic and social impact it has made to the area they live in. “We are very grateful to The T.R.E.E. Centre and Tullis Russell for arranging the visit and look forward to working with them again in the future.” The T.R.E.E. Centre will be open by appointment for school classes and group visits as well community events throughout the year. It also has a meeting room, exhibition space and 59-seater auditorium available for business and community group hire. Full information and contact details at www.thetreecentre.org
Komori sponsors Eco Zone at Ipex 2014
INFORMA Exhibitions has announced that Komori Corporation will participate in Ipex 2014 as Sponsor of the Eco Zone. Part of the event’s rich educational content and features programme, the Eco Zone will educate visitors on the ecological and business related advantages of reducing their environmental impact. In addition to demonstrating the economic benefits and eco-friendly performance of its H-UV System on a five colour 40” press with coater and dryer, Komori will also host regular presentations on recent legislation that requires blue chip businesses to report their carbon footprint, and will look at how this will impact print service providers. Neil Sutton, Managing Director of Komori UK, comments: “We were approached by the Ipex 2014 management team to discuss our H-UV printing technology and showcasing it in the the Ipex Eco Zone, so Komori have taken the decision to sponsor this feature. This will be an excellent platform for Komori to continue to build on its market leading position for the supply of low emission, eco-friendly and innovative H-UV printing.” “We are delighted that Komori made the decision to participate in Ipex, and are confident that commercial printers from around the world will benefit significantly from their offset technology and eco-expertise,” comments Wayne Beckett, Sales Director of Ipex 2014. “As the role of print continues to evolve in the multi-channel marketing communications mix, it is important to dispel any misperceptions in the industry about its environmental impact. Komori has a brilliant green story to tell, and their participation in the Eco Zone will allow them to do this at Ipex 2014.” www.komori.eu

New DTG products at Printwear Live 2014 IN the past Your Embroidery Services Ltd (YES Ltd) has always used Printwear Live, as a launch pad for new products and 2014 is no exception. Visitors will be able to see, for the first time at any UK show, the new Viper 2 and MX Series direct to garment printers from world leaders DTG Digital. The Viper 2 from DTG Digital is a new ‘large print area’ ‘small footprint’ direct to garment printer that has super flexibility to print multiple pieces at the same time. Introduced to replace the Viper and the Kiosk 3 DTG Digital has brought together the best of hardware, software and firmware, whilst retaining the key features from earlier models. This culmination of technology will make the Viper 2 the number one machine of today; in short they have produced a machine that will simply outrun the competition. Using ‘Smart Engineering’ much of the development has been in reaction to the rapidly expanding internet sales and print-for-profit markets and has therefore resulted in a machine that is not only faster but also easier to use. They have produced a machine that is rugged, requires less maintenance and gives the user greater added value to their business. The ‘all-new’ platen system for instance (called the 4-2-1) allows single prints up to XXXL, two standard prints or four smaller ones whilst also allowing for the printing
of large non-garment items such as linen and towels. For this new model DTG Digital has included the new in-line One Pass Fast function which combines the printing of white and CMYK but with a greater ‘lay-down’ of ink. They have also included the patented WIMS (White Ink Management System) but for this machine it uses a shorter tube length which give a more direct flow of ink and is also constantly pressurised at the print-head – yet another industry first for DTG Digital. This constantly pressurised ink delivery system also delivers a new level of colour and print consistency. They have also made available a special cleaning cartridge ideal for extended holiday shutdowns for those customers who work hard and play hard! With less maintenance, increased print area, greater flexibility and colour and print consistency; the new Viper 2, is set to be one the most flexible direct to garment print machines on the market in 2014. DTG Digital is also proud to announce the arrival of the all new M-Series “X-generation”. The M Series was originally promoted as the machines to bridge the gap between the small and bulk order markets and this will still be the case for the
new MX Series with more new machines joining this particular stable later in the year. While we wait though we can safely say that the current models “M2 & M4” just got quicker and even more productive! With a print area up to 61cm wide x two metres long; you can now print whatever you want digitally whether that be in bulk or small quantities As if that wasn’t enough DTG Digital will also be launching another new PRODUCT that can best be described as a ‘Game Changer’ – ‘something that has never been seen in the industry before’ and this will make 2014 a year to remember for both customers and competitors alike. John-Paul Burton (Sales Director of YES Ltd) said, “We are really excited about 2014. We know what is coming and we know how it will affect the market. Printwear Live is the perfect launch platform for us coming as it does in the first quarter of the year. It also seems quite fitting to launch not one, not two but three new global products at the 25th anniversary show. To say we are looking forward to it would be something of an understatement”. In the meantime, if you cannot wait for the show and want to see if these machines in action, you can do so by contacting Your Embroidery Services Ltd on 01623 863343 or e-mail them at sales@yesltd.co.uk

New Web to Print system is industry first
THE evolution of a new Web to Print system looks set to revolutionise the promotional gift industry. No-Minimum (www.no-minimum.co.uk) enables business gift houses to place orders online for as little as one unit on an extensive range of promotional products to create personalised gifts and allow micro businesses, franchise owners and independent traders to run very small, targeted promotions. The innovative website also provides competition for internet based personalised gift suppliers such as Moonpig and Vistaprint which have increasingly expanded their offering to include promotional business gifts. Developed over 18 months by The Pen Warehouse and Snap Products using their specialist industry knowledge, the sophisticated Web to Print system ensures speed and efficiency as the entire order process is completed online. The fully automated ordering system swiftly allows distributors to place an order online and view a proof on screen, which when approved enables the artwork to be sent directly to the printers.
Once printed, the products are then despatched directly to customers under plain cover. By eliminating the traditional telephone sales and administrative process with the addition of a live 24 hour chat service to answer queries and instant artwork e-proofs, the unique online ordering system therefore offers a saving in origination fees as administration costs are reduced and the saving is passed on to distributors. To benefit from the cost saving, typically £15 rather than the standard origination cost of £30, distributors need to place and complete their entire order on-line. No-Minimum uses the latest full colour digital print technology and laser engravers to reproduce detailed logos and photographic quality images, enabling even the smallest of brands to make the biggest impression. Neil Cleere, Managing Director of The Pen Warehouse says: “The innovation of No-Minimum allows distributors to order promotional items in low volume at great prices at the click of a mouse button for the first time. It’s a ground breaking
Data Copy reseller opportunity
LAST issue we published a recommendation for us all to become paper resellers. Well why not? We buy it in volume and hide it away in stock. Far better to have it on show and put an end-user price on it. We sell printing and a natural progression is to sell the ingredients for a print out service to our customers, Far better than have them run round some stationers only to find they are now also selling printing. In our case study, Colourfast in Brighton is not only promoting a Data Copy take away paper supply service but also showing off their new Plex Display Aqua Base swing sign at the same time. What is the print world coming to when our quick print service has to be complimented by promoting paper sales and signage products? End user mailers and customer incentives are all part of the programme, so check out the profit margin and start buying one of your major raw materials at a better rate too. We buy Data Copy from Antalis at £3-62 per ream and sell at £4-87. At the time of going to press, this quality multipurpose paper is on sale at Viking for £5-99 inc vat plus delivery. Save a few lorry journeys in your immediate area by inviting your business neighbours to share in the economies of scale and enjoy a carbon free, hand delivery from whoever wants/needs a bit of exercise in your print room. advancement for the industry, as it opens up promotional merchandise as a marketing tool to new markets that would previously have been excluded because of minimum order quantities which are uneconomic for small businesses. Distributors also benefit from better margins through savings in origination costs and will be able to take advantage of a much larger slice of the personalised gifts market by offering a more extensive range of products at competitive prices.” Visit www.no-minimum.co.uk today to set up an account.

A SNIP OF A JOKE… A salesman with a stuttering problem tries everything he can to stop stuttering, but he doesn’t succeed. Finally, he goes to a world-renowned doctor for help. The doctor examines him and says, ‘I’ve found your problem. Your penis is 12 inches long. It weighs so much that it is pulling on your lungs, causing you to stutter.’ Wa-wa-wa-what’s the c-c-c-cure, d-dd-doctor?’ asks the man. ‘We have to cut off 6 inches,’ replies the doctor. The man thinks about it and, eager to cure his stuttering, agrees to the operation. The operation is a success, and the man stops stuttering. Two months later, he calls the doctor and tells him that since he had the 6 inches cut off, all of his girlfriends have dumped him, and his love life has gone down the tubes. He wants the doctor to operate to put the six inches back on. Not hearing anything on other end of the line, the man repeats himself, ‘Hey doc, didn’t you hear me? I want my 6 inches back!’ Finally, the doctor responds, S-s-sorry T-t-too late!’
PILLOW TALK Jay went to a psychiatrist. “Doc, he said, “I’ve got trouble. Every time I get into bed I think there is somebody under it. I get under the bed; I think there’s somebody on top of it. Top, under, under top. I’m going crazy!” “Just put yourself in my hands for two years,” said the shrink. “Come to me three times a week and I’ll cure you.” “How much do you charge?” “A hundred pounds per visit.” “I’ll think about it.” Jay never went back. Some time later he met the doctor on the street. “Why didn’t you ever come to see me again? Asked the psychiatrist. “For a hundred pounds a visit? A bartender cured me for 10 pounds.” “Is that so! How?” “He told me to cut the legs off the bed.”
SHORT AND SWEET, UNLIKE MYSELF… Mind you it’s not easy to be both big and clever! How do you make a blonde’s eyes sparkle? Shine a torch into her ear... Q: Did you hear about the person who forgot to pay their exorcist? A: They were repossessed.
THE BUNNY AND THE SNAKE Once upon a time, allegedly, in a nice little forest, there lived an orphaned bunny and an orphaned snake. By surprising coincidence both were blind from birth. One day, the bunny was hopping through the forest, and the snake was slithering through the forest, when the bunny tripped over the snake and fell down. This, of course, knocked the snake about quite a bit. “Oh, my,” said the bunny, “I’m terribly sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you. I’ve been blind since birth, so, I can’t see where I’m going. In fact, since I’m also an orphan, I don’t even know what I am.” “It’s quite okay,” replied the snake. “Actually, my story is much the same as yours. I, too, have been blind since birth, and also never knew my mother. Tell you what, maybe I could slither over you, and figure out what you are, so at least you’ll have that going for you.” “Oh, that would be wonderful,” replied the bunny. So the snake slithered all over the bunny, and said, “Well, you’re covered with soft fur; you have really long ears; your nose twitches; and you have a soft cottony tail. I’d say that you must be a bunny.” “Oh, thank you! Thank you,” cried the bunny in obvious excitement. The bunny suggested to the snake, “Maybe I could feel you with my paw, and help you the same way you’ve helped me.” So the bunny felt the snake all over, and remarked, “Well, you’re scaly and smooth, and you have a forked tongue, no backbone and no balls. I’d say you must be either be a copier salesman, or possibly someone in managed print services.”
BEER RULES Yesterday scientists revealed that beer contains small traces of female hormones. To prove their theory, the scientists fed 100 men 12 pints of beer and observed that 100% of them gained weight, talked excessively without making sense, became emotional, and couldn’t drive. No further testing is planned.
LIFE’S REFLECTIONS 1 Never raise your hands to your kids. It leaves your groin unprotected. 2 I’m not into working out. My philosophy is no pain, no pain. 3 I’m in shape. Round is a shape. 4 I’m desperately trying to figure out why Kamikaze pilots wore helmets. 5 Do illiterate people get the full effect of alphabet soup? 6 I’ve always wanted to be somebody, but I should have been more specific. 7 Ever notice when you blow in a dog’s face he gets mad at you, but when you take him in a car he sticks his head out the window? 8 Ever notice that anyone going slower than you is an idiot, but anyone going faster is a maniac? 9. You have to stay in shape. My mother started walking five miles a day when she was 60. She’s 97 now and we have no idea where she is. 10 I have six locks on my door, all in a row. When I go out, I lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three of them. 11 One out of every three printers is suffering from some form of mental illness. Think of two of your best friends. If they are OK, then it must be you. 12 They show you how detergents take out bloodstains. I think if you’ve got a T-shirt with bloodstains all over it, maybe your laundry isn’t your biggest problem. 13 Ask people why they have deer heads on their walls and they tell you it’s because they’re such handsome animals. I think my husband is handsome, but I only have photographs of him on the wall. Hmmmm. 14 A lady came up to me on the street, pointed at my suede jacket and said, Don’t you know a cow was murdered for that jacket?” I said “I didn’t know there were any witnesses. Now I’ll have to kill you too”. 15 Future historians will be able to study at the Jimmy Carter Library, the Gerald Ford Library, the Ronald Reagan Library, and the Bill Clinton Adult Bookstore.
A SALESMAN WALKS INTO A BAR… …with a pet alligator by his side. He puts the alligator up on the bar. He turns to the astonished patrons. ‘I’ll make you a deal. I’ll open this alligator’s mouth and place my
genitals inside. Then the gator will close his mouth for one minute. He’ll then open his mouth and I’ll remove my unit unscathed. In return for witnessing this spectacle, each of you will buy me a drink.’ The crowd murmured their approval. The salesman stood up on the bar, dropped his trousers, and placed his privates in the alligator’s open mouth. The gator closed his mouth as the crowd gasped. After a minute, the salesman grabbed a beer bottle and rapped the alligator hard on the top of its head. The gator opened his mouth and the salesman removed his genitals – unscathed as promised. The crowd cheered and the first of his free drinks was delivered. The man stood up again and made another offer. ‘I’ll pay anyone £100 who’s willing to give it a try.’ A hush fell over the crowd. After a while, a hand went up in the back of the bar. A buxom young blonde woman timidly spoke up. ‘I’ll try, but you have to promise not to hit me on the head with the beer bottle.’
TALKING OF WORMS… Four worms were placed into four separate jars. The first worm was put into a jar of alcohol; the second worm was put into a jar of cigarette smoke; the third worm was put into a jar of sperm; and the fourth worm was put into a jar of soil. After one day, these were the results: The first worm in alcohol… dead; second worm in cigarette smoke…dead; third worm in sperm…dead; fourth worm in soil… alive. Lesson: As long as you drink, smoke and have sex, you won’t get worms.
HIS AND HERS A Spanish teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine. “House” for instance, is feminine: “la casa.” “Pencil,” however, is masculine: “el lapiz.” A student asked, “What gender is ‘computer’?” Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether “computer” should be a masculine or a feminine noun. Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation. The men’s group decided that “computer” should definitely be of the feminine gender (“la computadora”) because: 1 No one but their creator understands their internal logic.

2 The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else. 3 Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval; and 4 As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your salary on accessories for it. (THIS GETS BETTER!) The women’s group, however, concluded that computers should be masculine (“el computador”) because: 1 In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on. 2 They have a lot of data but still can’t think for themselves. 3 They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time, they ARE the problem; and 4 As soon as you commit to one, you realise that if you had waited a little longer, you could have gotten a better model. Surpise… The women won.
THINGS ONLY A MOTHER CAN TEACH 1 My Mother taught me about ANTICIPATION... ‘Just wait until your father gets home.’ 2 My Mother taught me about RECEIVING.... ‘You are going to get it when we get home!’ 3 My Mother taught me to MEET A CHALLENGE... ‘What were you thinking? Answer me when I talk to you... Don’t talk back to me!’ 4. My Mother taught me LOGIC... ‘If you fall out of that swing and break your neck, you’re not going to the shops with me.’ 5 My Mother taught me MEDICAL SCIENCE... ‘If you don’t stop crossing your eyes, they are going to freeze that way.’ 6 My Mother taught me to THINK AHEAD... ‘If you don’t pass your spelling test, you’ll never get a good job.’ 7 My Mother taught me ESP... ‘Put your sweater on; don’t you think I know when you’re cold?’ 8 My Mother taught me HUMOUR... ‘When that lawn mower cuts off
One salesman said to the other,
your toes, don’t come running to me.’ 9 My Mother taught me how to BECOME AN ADULT... ‘If you don’t eat your vegetables, you’ll never grow up.’ 10 My Mother taught me about SEX.... ‘How do you think you got here?’ 11 My Mother taught me about GENETICS...‘You’re just like your father.’ 12 My Mother taught me about my ROOTS... ‘Do you think you were born in a barn?’ 13 My Mother taught me about WISDOM OF AGE... ‘When you get to be my age, you will understand.’ 14 And my all time favourite... JUSTICE... ‘One day you’ll have kids, and I hope they turn out just like you.... then you’ll see what it’s like’
GREAT QUESTION An eight-year-old girl went to her dad, who was working in the yard. She asked him, ‘Daddy, what is sex?’ The father was surprised that she would ask such a question, but decides that if she is old enough to ask the question, then she is old enough to get a straight answer. He proceeded to tell her all about the ‘birds and the bees’. When he finished explaining, the little girl was looking at him with her mouth hanging open. The father asked her, ‘Why did you ask this question?’ The little girl replied, ‘Mum told me to tell you that dinner would be ready in just a couple of secs.’
By the way I didn’t know you had such a nice house!’.
GIRL BRAIN POWER A family went to a hospital, where one of their relatives would be having a brain transplant. One of the relatives asked, “What will the cost of a new brain be?” The doctor replied, “A female brain costs £25,000 and a male brain costs £50,000.” The men smirked, but one of the females asked, “Why is that, doctor?” “Well,” the doctor replied,” the female brain is less because it has been used.”
PRINT SUPPLIERS WORK CONTROL A print service employee found an old brass lamp in a filing cabinet. When he dusted it off, a genie appeared and granted him three wishes. “I’d love an ice-cold beer right now,” he told the genie. Poof! A beer appeared. Next the man said, “I wish to be on an island, surrounded by beautiful and willing women.” Poof! He was on an island with gorgeous women falling all over him. Oh, man this is the life, the guy thought. “I wish I never had to work again.” And poof!... He was back at his desk in the print suppliers work control office!
TRUE STORY
Bob Hill and his new wife Betty were holidaying in Europe, as it happens, near Transylvania. They were driving BEST PRACTICE in a rental car along a rather deserted A sales manager arrives at his highway. It was late, and raining very department and sees an employee hard. Bob attempts to control the weeks and had myself pampered by car, but to no avail! The car swerves my wife. It was fantastic and it really and smashes into a tree. Moments helped, you should try it too!’. Two later, Bob shakes his head to clear weeks later when the sales manager the fog. The emails are piling up and Despite the rain and unfamiliar the computer is running at full speed. countryside, Bob knows he has to ‘I see you followed my advice?’. ‘I did’, carry her to the nearest phone. Bob carefully picks his wife up and answers the employee, ‘It was great!
“You know, there are really only three kinds of people in the world:
those who can count,
begins trudging down the road. After a short while, he sees a light. He heads towards the light, which is coming from an old, large house. He approaches the door and knocks. A minute passes. A small, hunched man opens the door. Bob immediately blurts, “Hello, my name is Bob Hill, and this is my wife Betty. We’ve been in a terrible accident, and my wife has been seriously hurt. Can I please use your phone?” “I’m sorry,” replied the hunchback, “but we don’t have a phone. My master is a doctor; come in and I will get him!” Bob brings his wife in. An elegant man comes down the stairs. “I’m afraid my assistant may have misled you. I am not a medical doctor; I am a scientist. However, it is many miles to the nearest clinic, and I have had a basic medical training. I will see what I can do. Igor, bring them down to the laboratory.” With that, Igor picks up Betty and carries her downstairs, with Bob following closely. Igor places Betty on a table in the lab. Bob collapses from exhaustion and his own injuries, so Igor places Bob on an adjoining table. After a brief examination, Igor’s master looks worried. “Things are serious, Igor. Prepare a transfusion.” Igor and his master work feverishly, but to no avail. Bob and Betty Hill are no more. The Hills’ deaths upset Igor’s master greatly. Wearily, he climbs the steps to his conservatory, which houses his grand piano. For it is here that he has always found solace. He begins to play, and a stirring, almost haunting, melody fills the house. Meanwhile, Igor is still in the lab tidying up. His eyes catch movement, and he notices the fingers on Betty’s hand twitch, keeping time to the haunting piano music. Stunned, he watches as Bob’s arm begins to rise, marking the beat! He is further amazed as Betty sits straight up! Unable to contain himself, he dashes up the stairs to the conservatory. He bursts in and shouts to his master: “Master, Master! The Hills are alive with the sound of music”
and those who can’t.”

New Royal Mail Mailmark™ is made simple with Neopost FOLLOWING a £70million investment, Royal Mail will soon be introducing the next generation of franked mail - Mailmark™. At Neopost we see Mailmark™ as an exciting initiative that will ultimately make franking an even more attractive option. Royal Mail’s Mailmark™ will be progressively introduced during the course of 2014.
So what is Royal Mail Mailmark™? Mailmark™ is a new generation of franking mark that replaces the traditional ‘town and crown’ die with a 2D barcode that carries machine readable information on the user and mailpiece. Mailmark™ offers the potential to track mail location and delivery, improve reporting and management of tariffs. Over time all business mail will carry this barcode. However Royal Mail will continue to process existing franking formats for a period after Mailmark™ becomes available, so for those that do not want to take up this new technology there is no immediate change.
Mailmark™ means smarter mail for your business Some of the benefits of new Mailmark™ for your business are: • Simplified access to Royal Mail products • Increased intelligence gives potential for new products and services • More professional and modern image helps to add customer value • Cessation of ‘posting out of area’ requirement
With Mailmark™ you always pay the right amount for postage With new Mailmark™ the correct postage is always applied so you benefit from: • No surcharges – avoid customer dissatisfaction and extra cost • Simple tariff update • Accurate product selection • Expected tariff differential • Mailmark™ will always be the best value tariff in the franking channel
Who will benefit from using Mailmark™? • Retail customers using low sort, unsorted or meter options for Letters and Large Letters
So what do franking machine users need to do? As the old franking service remains, there is no need to upgrade or replace machines as a result of Mailmark™. The business case for replacement will depend on the volume of mail sent and the tariff differences. At this stage the pricing of Mailmark™ versus other Royal Mail tariffs is unknown. Other factors to consider when making this decision are the productivity, convenience and cost benefits of a new machine. Depending on the current machine, these could include integrated scales, intuitive touch screens, print quality and the capability to reclaim VAT on eligible Royal Mail postal services. Over the coming months Royal Mail will be releasing more information and details on Mailmark™ – to keep up to speed with all these developments you can also register for regular e-mail bulletins from Neopost.
• Access customers sending machinable Letters and Large Letters • Business Mail Advanced and Response Services customers
