PrintIT! launches PassIT!
THE PassIT! fundraising campaign, derived from London Calling 2014 is a collaboration between Duplo and its partners to run a 10 month fundraising campaign to raise awareness and money for Proskills’ Schools into Industry programme PrintIT! Optimus, Antalis, Balreed, Taopix, Vpress, LumeJet, Renz, Neopost, Vivid and Duplo have each been allocated a month in which to organise a fundraising activity. The PassIT! baton will be passed to each partner throughout the year ending with Duplo taking the last month of September before showcasing their results at London Calling 2015. PassIT! was as a result of a brainstorming session with the London Calling partners on how they could do more to promote and support PrintIT! through London Calling. Peter Jolly, Managing Director at Duplo UK says: “The concept of London Calling is a workflow between the seed of a printed job, right from the web order to the print to the finishing and through to the mailing. It is basically a “chain” of companies linking together. So the launch of the PassIT! campaign through London Calling just seemed a natural progression, to pass the baton up the chain! PrintIT! is an extremely important initiative, for
the future of print. We can either sit back and discuss “the good old days” and how tough times are now, or we can embrace change and innovations in modern communication and tell the youth of today how creative, fun and fulfilling the print industry is. PrintIT! bangs the drum for print on behalf of the industry; and that is why we support it. We are all very excited about the PassIT! campaign and we have lots of ideas for the year ahead. I’ve just recently competed in the Great South Run and have the running bug, so I’d love to get the Duplo Team running for PrintIT!” Kicking off the campaign in December is Optimus, a supplier of Management Information Systems to the Printing Industry based in Woking, Surrey. They are planning on cycling 296 miles which is the equivalent distance of the first Gutenberg press in Mainx Germany to Bruges in Belgium where Caxton printed the first English text book. Each team will be named after ‘C’ ‘M’ ‘Y’ ‘K’ (After the colour model CMYK) and will take it in turns to achieve this incredible feat. Steve Richardson, Sales Director at Optimus said: “The print and graphics industries are embedded in the UK’s heritage and economic landscape as one of the top contributors in manufacturing. We cannot afford to let young talent miss out and we must inspire them at the grassroots level to enter our industries. We need young, flexible and fresh skills to come in or we risk losing growth and innovation. PrintIT! is a fantastic initiative from which we will all benefit. By helping to inspire and teach young people about our industries we are ensuring a continuing stream of new skills, helping us to grow and remain a strong contributor to jobs in the UK and beyond. We are very proud to be part of the PassIT!
fundraising campaign for PrintIT! We can’t wait to kick off the activities this month with the cycle challenge. Let’s all get behind it and help inspire young people into our industries!” PrintIT! run by the charity Proskills UK, educates young people about the print, paper and packaging through a curriculum mapped design competition for the Fairtrade Foundation and learning activities. Not only do students get a hands-on opportunity to experience these industries they also gain an insight into the potential careers, apprenticeships and training they offer. Jonathan Ledger, Managing Director of Proskills UK added: “The PassIT! campaign is such a fantastic initiative and we are very grateful to Duplo and its London Calling partner print and paper companies for organising this wonderful charitable initiative to support the Proskills PrintIT! schools programme. PrintIT! aims to inspire and educate as many students as possible without any cost to schools. This work would not be possible without the generous support we receive from the print and paper industries. This is the first time that a long-term charitable fundraising campaign has been run for PrintIT! and so we are incredibly excited about it. This will not only raise awareness of the programme, it will help to deliver more workbooks and resources to students. It will also promote the print and paper industries to students, alerting them to the exciting and diverse array of career opportunities and demonstrate how committed the industry is in supporting their knowledge of the sector.” Follow Optimus and their activities and the campaign at #PassITUK or at www.printit.org.uk For more information please contact the PrintIT! team on 01235 432030 or printit@ proskills.co.uk. www.duplouk.com

Canon launches PSPs cross-media guide CANON has announced the publication of an inspirational guide for Print Service Providers (PSPs) who want to incorporate cross-media into their service offering. Developed using in-depth industry research, expert market knowledge and insight from independent Essential Business Builder Program (EBBP) consultants, this invaluable resource will help PSPs to better understand the opportunities presented by cross-media and how they can benefit from them. Following a detailed introduction to crossmedia, the guide explains, step-by-step, the journey that PSPs can take to become marketing service providers (MSPs). It also helps position professional quality print as a highly relevant and effective communication platform alongside digital channels. In addition to information and insight, the guide also provides inspiration in the form of case studies about businesses that have successfully incorporated cross-media into their service offerings, as well as showcasing examples of innovative and effective cross-media applications with measurable Marketing Return on
Investment (MROI). Completing the guide is an independent overview of the leading cross-media technologies, provided by industry analyst, Infotrends. Antony White, European & UK Product Business Developer (Solutions), Canon Europe says: “Crossmedia has long been seen as the next big opportunity for printers. However, our research shows that many PSPs have struggled to grasp exactly what it is, whether it’s right for their business and how they can get started. With this
guide, we’ve set out to help our customers grow their businesses by answering these very questions. “Combining inspiration with in-depth insight and drawing on our experience of working with successful cross-media marketing service providers, the guide serves as a conversation starter between PSPs and their customers. We hope that the guide will become a helpful reference tool for those who want to further leverage the value of print and their core competencies in a multichannel communications mix.” To learn more about the cross media guide and obtain a copy, please email cross-media_guide@cuk. canon.co.uk • www.canon.co.uk
Artist keeps the faith with Epson A stunning piece of contemporary art has been commissioned and installed in St Michael’s Church, Camden. Measuring more than 60 m2, the largescale artwork has been produced by artist Maciej Urbanek and printed using an Epson large format printer and media. The project has been a huge undertaking for the artist but an important one as St Michael’s is not just a place for worship but also acts as a meeting place and hub for the local community. Commissioned by Father Philip North, Team Rector of the Parish of Old St Pancras, and funded by John Booth Charitable Foundation, the piece titled ‘HS’ is made of sculpted bin bags that have been photographed and digitally reworked to create a focal point within the church. A graduate of Goldsmiths College and the Royal Academy of Arts, Maciej is currently photography tutor at the Royal Academy Schools, while still developing his art practice producing large-scale printed works. He has used Epson materials and equipment within the RA Schools’ Epson Digital Media Suite since he was a student so knows the technology well. “Once I had secured funding for the project I contacted Epson who readily agreed to help by offering me the use of their print facility at Hemel Hempstead,” says Maciej. But it wasn’t going to be a straightforward print job: “I didn’t want to print the work in strips because then I have long vertical cuts going through the work and the eye is really drawn to them. I wanted to print the work in elements that would be cut along the lines within the image. Not only does this keep the look of the original artwork but another advantage is that I can install the work easily, putting it together piece by piece – like a giant puzzle.”
Maciej divided the work into 27 large pieces which were then printed on Epson Ultrasmooth Fine Art paper using an Epson Stylus Pro 11880 printer. “Having used Epson technology for a few years I know exactly what to expect and the combination of printer, media and inks produces the highest quality finish – it’s fine art,” says Maciej. The 64-inch Stylus Pro 11880 is the perfect printer for fine art and photography - it’s exceptionally fast and produces superb, longlasting results. Using Epson UltraChrome K3 ink with Vivid Magenta it reproduces consistent stunning, photo-realistic images and is ideal for colour and black and white prints. The Micro Piezo
TFP print head technology features 360 micro-fine nozzles per colour, delivering sharp, grain-free images at ultra-high speed. It took 24 hours to print the 27 pieces and a further three days to install but the overall effect is stunning. “Epson were so helpful in providing their expertise, help and support, not to mention their time, in order to make the production of this artwork possible,” says Maciej. “I’m delighted with the finished piece. It creates a fantastic focal point as you enter the church and I hope that the whole community can come together and enjoy it for the next couple of years.” www.epson.co.uk

Goin’ Large: World’s Largest Flatbed Printer
SA International, has announced that its awardwinning PixelBlaster print-to-finish production software has been bundled with the world’s largest digital flatbed printer, the Dip-Tech AR18000 digital ceramic in-glass printer. Dip-Tech - provider of digital ceramic in-glass printing solutions, has set a new world record for printer size with the Dip-Tech AR18000 – an achievement officially recognised by Guinness World Records under the category of “largest digital flatbed printer”. The Dip-Tech printer stands at an impressive 18m (59ft) in length – more than double the length of Dip-Tech’s next-longest printer – and can print a single pane of glass with a total area of up to 64m2 (688.89ft2). Typical applications of digital ceramic printing include colour-printed architectural glass for exterior projects, as well interior usage and transportation glass. Covering pre-flight to production, SAi’s PDFbased PixelBlaster is a genuine end-to-end software that is designed to reduce bottlenecks, streamline workflows and increase profitability for
users. SAi and Dip-Tech already enjoy an established collaboration, which saw SAi develop the exclusive PixelBlaster Dip-Tech Edition software to specifically address certain unique characteristics and challenges of Dip-Tech’s in-glass printers. As Dip-Tech’s technology uses naturally pigmented ink and therefore doesn’t use the CMYK colour set (instead using orange, red, blue, green, black and white, as well as any required special spot color), PixelBlaster is used to match the designer or architect’s CMYK files into language the Dip-Tech printers understand. The SAi PixelBlaster Dip-Tech Edition software comprises a PixelBlaster RIP, colour management and full colour workflow support and is bundled with all of Dip-Tech’s in-glass printers, which offer six-colour plus spot colour capability to the architectural and transportation glass market. The special edition software was also developed to deliver the higher level of control needed for the opaque ceramic inks used on Dip-Tech in-glass printers. Printing on transparent glass and applying colours with varying levels of opacity demand a special level of control that SAi engineers incorporated into the software. Another challenge for SAi was to develop a way of controlling the application of white ink in the
way Dip-Tech needed it. White is important when it is used as the base colour onto which other colours are applied; it is a means of controlling opacity, but at the same time, designers need to be able to use a reliable white in their designs. The SAi PixelBlaster DipTech Edition software enables different levels of white to be applied so that this control exists. As well as fulfilling these specific requirements, the SAi PixelBlaster Dip-Tech Edition carries out the more standard jobs of SAi PixelBlaster software, including tiling, step-and-repeat, and colour library functions. “SAi congratulates Dip-Tech on the impressive achievement of being welcomed as a Guinness World Record title holder and we are proud that our PixelBlaster software should play such a pivotal role in contributing to the overall performance of this record-breaking printer,” says Sarit Tichon, Senior VP Worldwide Sales at SAi. “Dip-Tech’s expertise in glass application, together with SAi’s industry-leading image processing knowledge has generated a powerful graphic platform for glass processors that symbolises the strength of our ongoing collaboration,” adds Aliza Edry, Director of Applications at Dip-Tech. “Both Dip-Tech and SAi R&D teams continue to work closely to meet the unique imaging and workflow needs of our customers and fulfil their objectives in the field of printed architectural glass applications,” Edry concludes. www.ThinkSAi.com www.dip-tech.com
K+L Laminators new Polar production
K+L Laminators has expanded into a new 3,500 sq ft unit adjacent to its existing site in Hove and taken delivery of an additional Polar N115 guillotine with stacklift, jogger and pile turner. “We needed this additional cutting capacity to ease the work load on the existing Polar. We like the Polar build quality, reliability and ease of use and Heidelberg is a company you can trust, with the best machines and excellent back up. This technology is easy to use and is value for money. We have had other makes in the past but since owning a Polar we have never looked back,” says managing director Darren Miles. The company handles a huge range of work, from business cards to B1

The materials handling around the cutter will speed up operations, particularly with large sheet sized work, and it also takes the strain out of cutting, protecting the well-being of K +L’s staff. Perfect Colours takes on the HP Latex 3000 AT 3.2m wide with dual-roll capability and blistering throughput speeds, the HP Latex 3000 represents a major step up in productivity for sign and graphics companies. This high-volume workhorse takes pride of place in Perfect Colours ever-broadening portfolio of machinery after the reseller’s latest agreement with manufacturer HP. The HP Latex 3000 has received its due share of attention since its launch at FESPA, as much for its superb image definition as its racing output speed. Its six-colour ink-set, embedded spectrophotometer and latex optimiser combine with a 12pl droplet size to produce fine-quality graphics which stand up easily to the close inspection expected from indoor applications – including the high-margin interior décor and wallpaper work currently gaining traction in the industry. This sort of job can expect to print at 77sq m/ hour, while banner and other exterior work can attain 120sq m/hour, creating efficiency for businesses looking to satisfy large volumes, whether versioned or as a long run. The Latex 3000 can reach a maximum speed of 180sq m/ hour but, notably, can process two 1.6m rolls at once, providing efficiency and therefore profitability regardless of media width. Particularly important for British wide-format houses, the Latex 3000 scores at both ends of the viable production spectrum. Although lamination can be applied immediately after printing, many users skip this step thanks to its excellent scratch resistance, which compares like-for-like with hard
solvent on PVC banner or self-adhesive vinyl. However, it also performs superbly on heatsensitive materials and textiles, with an optional ink collector providing access to untapped markets via new substrates, such as unlined mesh, scrim, voile or flag. “It makes total sense for Perfect Colours to provide the Latex 3000, not only for our everexpanding base of HP Latex users in the UK
but also those hungry for a high-productivity alternative in roll-to-roll,” comments Jon Telling, sales director for the award-winning reseller. “In line with our other recent portfolio additions and our dedication to service, we’re confident that Perfect Colours now provides the most comprehensive range of graphics production options in the country.” www.perfectcolours.com

PSPs demand Canon imagePRESS C800 CANON report a remarkably high level of demand for its new colour production cutsheet imagePRESS C800 Series since its launch at the ‘Canon For Business 2014’ event in Germany. Orders in Europe, the Middle East and Africa for the imagePRESS C800 have exceeded 900 units in a variety of configurations, with interest coming from print service providers (PSPs) and in-house print departments throughout EMEA. Positioned between the imageRUNNER ADVANCE C9000 Series and the imagePRESS C6011(S) in Canon’s colour digital press portfolio, the imagePRESS C800 Series produces high quality output at a marketleading level of productivity. “This high level of interest and the significant number of orders we have already received for our new C800 series demonstrates that customers recognise the possibilities of such a versatile, productive and high quality device for their business,” comments Adrian Campomanes, European & UK Product Marketing Business Developer, Professional Print, at Canon Europe. Feedback from participants in Canon’s lead customer programme has highlighted the quality of colour reproduction, flexibility and the high levels of productivity achievable as some of the key benefits contributing to the popularity of the new C800 series. Peter Moes, business owner of two franchises of print and marketing services provider MultiCopy|The Communication Company located at Almere and Lelystad in The Netherlands, has been a participant in the lead customer programme and has already profited from the benefits the Canon imagePRESS C800 is bringing to his business. “We are very impressed with the excellence and consistency of colour output, even at high production speeds,” comments Moes. “In addition, thanks to the flexibility and ease with which the press handles a range of substrates, including label stock, we have been able to introduce extra services and applications for our customers, enabling us to take the business
into new markets.” Comprising two models - the 70ppm imagePRESS C700 and the 80ppm imagePRESS C800 - the new imagePRESS C800 Series incorporates cuttingedge technology combined with new and enhanced proven technology from the flagship Canon imagePRESS C7011VP(S). This has enabled the C800 Series to deliver advanced levels of print quality, productivity and versatility in both commercial and in-house print environments. Rocket Graphics shoots for the stars with Mimaki
FOLLOWING a positive year of growth and new staff in place to take the business forward in 2015, long-standing Mimaki customer; Rocket Graphics has added a third JV33-160 to its already extensive print capacity as it gears up for further expansion. Based in Watford, Rocket Graphics produces an extensive range of large format digital production of branding and signage for events, exhibitions and retail as production director, Phil Eames explains; “We work hard here at Rocket. We have many jobs with a 24 hour turnaround and we run our printers continuously, day and night. Our Mimaki JV33s are a real asset in this sense as they feature an Uninterrupted Ink Supply System (UISS) allowing switching between two cartridges of the same colour automatically, giving us long unattended print runs overnight. It doubles our productivity without doubling our staffing costs, which makes great business sense.” Rocket’s team has a fluid and flexible approach to how it operates and embraces the challenges of working with diverse customers, both at home and abroad. It was the acquisition of a high profile print contract in the USA that prompted Rocket’s investment in a third Mimaki JV33; “We added a third Mimaki to our portfolio in order for us to complete a large job in America, whereupon we printed graphics for a very large sector of the exhibition,” explains Eames. “We sent a team of installers out there to ensure a smooth transition from production to display and we even shipped
one of our Mimaki JV33’s along too in case there were any last-minute changes to be made. We like to go the extra mile for our customers, and the Mimaki certainly went the extra mile with us!” Mimaki reseller, Granthams Graphic Technology supplied and installed Rocket Graphics’ JV33 and provided support in shipping the printer to the USA and back as part of the campaign, as general manager, Kirsty Reader discusses; “We have supplied Rocket Graphics with several Mimaki printers and have been their consumables partner for some time, so it’s natural to want to assist them wherever we can. They have great vision and are attracting some big contracts and we wanted to share our knowledge and expertise of the printing industry – and Mimaki printers more specifically, to help them get the best out of their business.” www.rocketgraphicsltd.co.uk www.granthamsgt.co.uk. www.hybridservices.co.uk

Newtech Corby visitors double
In the latest of a series of printing and graphic shows saw it visiting Corby. Hosted at the Ultima Display’s Showroom the event was a huge success with registrations breaking records.
V
ISITORS AND EXHIBITORS alike were delighted with the event which features new products for the wide format, DTG, Screen and Display markets. ‘I enjoyed the way it’s set up. It’s friendly, you’re able to have 1-2-1s. Well organised with a good working environment where exhibitors are trying to help with solutions rather than trying to sell so that the visitor can learn more about the product and understand it.’ Rahet Shah (Slick Rhino) ‘A very good smaller show which offers excellent time with each exhibitor. The bigger shows are noisy and it is often difficult to hear what exhibitors are explaining if they have time to do so at all. This is far more intimate with not too many exhibitors. It is just right.’ Anne Warren (Bedford Borough Council) Newtech rolls on to Botleigh Grange in Southampton February 10-11. For further information or to register as a visitor: www.co-opevents.com
ROLAND DG ANNOUNCES WINNER FROM CORBY EVENT
Roland DG has confirmed it will be exhibiting at the next Wide Format, Screen, Digital & Displays Newtech Roadshow, which will be held at the Botleigh Grange Hotel in Southampton, 10th and 11th February. The company will be using the show – its fourth attendance at a Newtech event in just 12 months – to demonstrate the vast range of applications that can be produced on its high performance, production machines including VersaEXPRESS RF-640, the VersaUV LEF-20, the VersaSTUDIO BN-20, and the VersaCAMM VS-300i. Says Rob Goleniowski, Business Manager, Sign & Graphics, Roland DG: “The Newtech roadshows are becoming an increasingly important component of our annual events calendar here at Roland. The regional nature of them is giving us a real opportunity to get closer to many potential customers, who are able to take advantage of the manufacturers effectively coming to their own front door. We’re looking forward to meeting with customers and prospects from across the south of England, introducing them to Roland technology and showing them how they can use these machines to transform their business and increase profitability.” This is a view echoed by House of Flags’ Regional Manager, Stuart Riding, who visited the Roland stand at the Newtech - Wide Format, Screen, Digital & Displays roadshow in Corby in November last year and as a result was also the lucky winner of the show prize draw, walking away with a brand new mini iPad! Said Mr Riding: “The Newtech Corby show was a very interesting and useful show for us here at House of Flags. The fact the show was based in Corby just 30 minutes away enabled us to spend more time talking about key products with manufacturers, and taking the time to really understand the
benefits of each technology we were interested in. “I attended with our operations manager, Martin George, and our intention was to pop in so we could have a look at Roland’s new printers. We ended up spending most of the day chatting to potential new suppliers and discussing ways of moving the business forward. Everyone that we spoke to was extremely friendly and helpful. It was a great show, local, manageable and informative.” Roland’s impressive line-up at Southampton show - Impressive print speeds of up to 48.5m2/hr, outstanding print quality, advanced productivity features and the unmatched reliability of a Roland makes the VersaEXPRESS RF-640 four-colour printer the perfect choice for those printers and sign makers who consistently produce high quality graphics and prints, while keeping the cost of operation low. Roland’s pocket rocket, the desktop VersaSTUDIO BN-20 print and cut machine has firmly established itself in the industry. This 20” wide, ecosolvent integrated print and cut device fits into any signage, retail or commercial print environment and can output full colour and contour cut graphics on a broad spectrum of coated and uncoated media, producing an exhaustive range of durable and eye-catching outdoor and indoor graphics. It is designed to produce applications including stickers, decals, labels, t-shirt transfers, POS and POP, photo prints, signs, posters, small format signage and vehicle graphics – all from the desktop. The BN-20 uses Roland’s awardwinning ECO-SOL MAX ink and comes with a choice of three eco-solvent ink configurations: four colour CMYK (CMMYK), five colour CMYK plus metallic silver ink, or CMYK plus white ink. THE VERSACAMM VS-300I — a powerful, highly versatile and economical 30 inch wide print and cut machine. The VS-i Series, which also includes a 54” and 64” model comes with a choice of five different ECO-SOL MAX 2 ink configurations, including white, metallic and light black ink options. The VS-i series will deliver stunning results across a world of applications including signs, banners, posters, stickers, labels, decals, vehicle wraps, window graphics, exhibition displays, fine art posters, floor graphics, pointof-sale displays, packaging prototypes and heat transfers for garment decoration. Able to print directly onto any object and substrate up to 100mm deep, the VersaUV LEF-20 is an exciting new profit-making device for printing onto 3D objects. It can be used to create unique and highly desirable items, including personalised stationery, key rings, golf balls, mobile phone covers, awards, USB sticks and other giftware and promotional items on the broadest range of substrates including acrylic, wood, board, metal, plastic, PET, ABS, canvas and even soft materials like TPU, leather and fabric. The LEF-20 uses Roland’s ECO-UV inks in CMYK, white and clear formulations, resulting in highly ornate, decorative or innovative products that command a significant margin. In addition, Roland will also be offering free personalised 1-1 training sessions on its VersaWorks RIP software and mini-LEF-20 Business Bootcamp. And, it will once again be in good company at the show with exhibitors including Dorotape, Ultima Displays, Goccopro 100, The Magic Touch, Wicked Printing Stuff, Ralawise, AMS, Parkwood and Marketing Alchemy, all sharing the stage throughout the two days of the show. The Newtech Wide Format, Printing, Displays and Finishing Show is free to attend. For further information please visit www.rolanddg.co.uk/ southampton.

Whilst the recent success of our new grand format products has been hugely exciting and opened up all sorts of new opportunities for the business, we are committed to continuing support of our core markets with an ever-expanding range and exciting new developments to our media portfolio, which we’ll be showcasing at this years’ Sign & Digital UK” Soyang Europe will be showcasing a wide range of different media at the show, including their highly regarded ‘own brand’ range of SoFlex
banner materials, SoStick One-way vision media, the ever- popular SoFlat banner material for frontlit, backlit and blockout applications, as well as the much expanded range of SoMagic wallcoverings. Also featuring heavily at the show, will be Intercoat, a premium quality, German manufactured self-adhesive vinyl, perfect for a huge range of applications from stickers to product labelling, to signs, badges, window and vehicle graphics. Printable with any latex, ecosolvent, solvent or UV curable wide format printer, Intercoat also has great eco-credentials thanks to the lack of solvents used in any part of the production process and water-based adhesives. Soyang Europe’s more widely recognised product range will also complemented at the show by AlumiGraphics; a versatile, 100% recyclable, wide-format media made from pliable aluminium foil with a white finish that accepts a wide range of solvent, eco-solvent, latex and UV inks. This amazing media is durable, easy to use, printable direct to the surface with no over lamination required, moulds naturally, without heat, and can be applied to virtually any rough or smooth textured surface, offering interesting and profitable new opportunities for printers and marketers. Mashiter concludes; “About a year ago we adopted a new strapline as part of our corporate branding review; Every Surface Covered really does define our market aims and objectives. With the sheer diversity and quality of our product range we have media that will meet just about every application requirement you could imagine, on pretty much any surface. Our customers also have the reassurance of knowing that all our products are available on a nationwide, next working day delivery from our 70,000sq ft UK warehouse.” www.soyang.co.uk

Customers – the Next Generation
If you are reading this then obviously you survived Christmas and all that the feeding frenzy festival has become. Martin Christie previously speculated that we would suffer from an influx of customers who would normally use the internet for orders but who had realised they had run out of time for delivery of gifts and services, and this seemed to be the case. At least some realised that circumstance dictated they had to pay the list price as a result rather than the discounts possible if there was no time premium, but others felt unjustly aggrieved they had to pay for their own lack of planning.
T
HIS IS JUST part of a growing trend of customers now arriving at any print on demand outlet that has an open door to the public. A certain proportion seem to have no previous experience of print or any of the production services we can provide, and as a consequence have unrealistic expectations of both cost and timescale. This is frustrating and time consuming if you are having to explain not only the complications of what you do, but also why it costs so much and takes so long. In a demand led economy where consumers expect items to be on the shelf at all times required, the process of actual production is overlooked or completely ignored. This is only partly due to the so-called ‘click and collect’ culture generated by internet shopping. It may work for high street shops and supermarkets where you only have to pick size, colour and quantity. It even works for take away foods where a known product can be despatched. But print is nothing like standard products in that it cannot but cooked up without the right ingredients and specification provided by the customer. And as we know from experience, a lot of the time the customer doesn’t always know what they want, and needs advice. And even if they know what they want, they need to be guided on what
it will cost and how long it will take to do. The other significant difference with print is that it is customer specific so that once produced, it cannot be simply put back on the shelf for another consumer. So the consequences of misunderstanding and error have a direct cost. Years ago the pub restaurant chain Harvester had an advert which featured a friendly waitress greeting new guests with the phrase “Have you ever been to a Harvester before?”. They realised they were expecting to welcome a whole new generation of diners who might have little previous experience of eating out. The on demand print shop is rapidly needing a similar introduction to its services. I’ve come to the conclusion we are receiving a whole new generation of customers, not in age so much as experience and expectation. It’s the instant generation of the iPhone and the tablet that have put mobile communication in the hands of people who missed out on the learning curve of digital that was a right of passage previously.
THE GENERATION GAME The first generation was perhaps those with their hands on the limited number of business computers serving the industry. They had the knowledge and everyone had to bow to their
wisdom, much like in ancient times the people had to listen to the priests as all the books were written in Latin. The second generation had the home personal computer which put at least the basic skills on the desk top of a wider public. This had a similar historic impact as the invention of the medieval printing press which enabled the books to be printed in any public language. Despite concerns, the popularity of the PC did not wipe out the hard print industry, although it did force through some changes. What it did do was give a grounding in the creation of images and documents as well as basic production. Though everyone usually got an A4 inkjet printer with their desktop package, it didn’t take long to discover they were troublesome to operate for the average user, and ridiculously expensive in consumables. And although popular, to put it in perspective there were estimated to be desktops in only one in four of UK homes. In comparison, it was reported that last year over 60 per cent of the population had an iPhone of some sort, and that’s where the third generation of customers has been developed. Of course hand in hand with that was the improvement of internet service and mobile transmission which enabled transfer of much greater traffic and quantity of data. Anyone who only knows this digital democracy would never understand the limitations of previous technology. Nor do they appreciate the expertise still needed when apparently simple software can mimic jobs that would formerly need a designer or a photographer. It’s also worth remembering that the second mentioned generation, although they had a computer with at least some internet connection, were quite reluctant to purchase anything they couldn’t actually hold in their hands. Now online shopping is almost instinctive amongst consumers that connection has been largely lost. The dilemma for the print outlet is that just because something can be ordered instantly doesn’t mean it can be created in the same time frame. Instant has taken on a more literal meaning in the public mind, so it’s probably no longer a suitable adjective for promoting an on demand service. What you call something in promoting it to a customer is of course an important part of marketing. A name, or a description can create an expectation in the consumer that may or may not be fulfilled by reality.

WINDOW PAIN
Microsoft will be launching a new operating system towards the end of this year, aimed particularly at this new mobile generation, and without a single blush are going to title it Windows 10. If you are wondering what happened to Windows 9 apparently those in charge in Seattle wanted it to look like they were taking a big leap forward from the much disliked Windows 8. Whether it is or not we wait to see when features are previewed or leaked. But those of us from the previous generations will know that an apparent leap forward can easily be a slip backwards. It’s unlikely that many businesses will be embracing Windows 10 anytime soon, and many have only just made the transition to Windows 7, from the now abandoned XP. And remember, Windows 7 was brought in to replace the awful Vista. Going back further Microsoft has several other skeletons in the IT cupboard, so the next incarnation can be viewed with some apprehension. It can’t be ignored because it will be bound to be installed on many of the new devices that will be hitting the street in the coming year, so we will see if it has any implications for print production in the coming months. One thing it will be likely to produce is more customers new to technology with very little idea of how it is driven. As an encouragement to users, Windows 10 will be available as a free upgrade to Windows 7 for the first year, and only chargeable thereafter. But the offer also underlines that Microsoft itself is a little apprehensive about the launch, and the longer term implications for the firm whose share prices have been taking a few knocks. It would be ironic if one of the main drivers of the digital economy became one of its casualties.

You can open a PNG in the latest versions of Photoshop as well as Illustrator, and Corel Draw, but the safest advice it to ask a customer to save a suitable file format for printing if they is able to. A mega day of action saw more than 3,000 trees planted at a site which is set to become the UK’s biggest continuous new native woodland. Ethical-minded business The Premier Paper Group has a novel way of putting back what it takes out of the environment – planting thousands of trees. And at the Woodland Trust-owned Heartwood Forest in Hertfordshire it did just that with customers and staff getting their hands dirty and planting a whopping 3,000 trees in a day. Chris Stanyon, Director of environmental sales for Premier Paper Group said: “Premier’s Carbon Capture programme has been a phenomenal success. We offer customers the option of capturing the CO2 emissions from the production and distribution of the paper that they buy and use by planting trees with the Woodland Trust. This demonstrates a clear strategy of environmental responsibility that really can help win business. The attraction of the Carbon Capture programme is that it produces very clear and tangible results; new woodland creation right here in the UK that not only benefits wildlife and the environment but also creates green space for everyone to enjoy. And of course on the tree planting days such as this, the organisations that engage with the programme can join in and actually plant the trees providing much needed manpower for the Woodland Trust.” Clare Allen, Head of Partnerships at the Woodland Trust said: “Heartwood Forest is a really special site for the Woodland Trust. It is our largest site in England at 857 acres. It is our biggest woodland creation site and as well as this it is also has several areas of much treasured irreplaceable ancient woodland dating back hundreds of years. “We are delighted at Premier Paper’s remarkable day of tree planting. The business is clearly determined to help us create new woodland for people and wildlife as well as having an ethical mind-set to mitigate carbon emissions through our Woodland Carbon scheme.” The Premier Paper Group recognises that planting trees helps soak up unwanted carbon dioxide which pollutes the atmosphere, a process known as Carbon Capture. Tree Planting Day involved around 170 staff and customers from across the country. They were then taught about the importance of Britain’s native tree species which include oak, alder, willow, wild cherry, rowan, holly, beech, hazel and got to work in planting them. Heartwood Forest Heartwood Forest, located just north of St Albans in Hertfordshire, is an 857 acre site and is the largest of The Woodland Trust’s woods in England and also the largest continuous new native woodland in the country. It consists of ancient woodland dating back to at least 1600AD as well as newly planted woodland. The Woodland Trust The Woodland Trust works tirelessly to create a UK rich in woodlands which can benefit our environment and be enjoyed and valued by everyone. Woodland not only provides a rich, bio diverse environment for wildlife but also provides us all with green, open space for rest and recreation. More than 1,200 woodlands throughout the UK are owned or managed by the Woodland Trust, covering in excess of 60,000 acres throughout the UK, with free and easy year round access for us all to enjoy. Trees improve our quality of life, making our local communities and neighbourhoods greener and more pleasant places to live. www.paper.co.uk

PEFC proves consumers trust certification THE Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) has revealed that more than 80% of consumers globally want companies sourcing certified material from sustainable managed forests to use certification labels, according to the first PEFC Global Consumer Survey. The survey shows that certification labels, such as the PEFCs, are the most trusted means of giving confidence to consumers that wood-based products are sustainably sourced. Consumers globally believe that it is important to make ethical choices, with 60% of all those surveyed agreeing that their shopping choice for a labeled product can make a positive difference to the world’s forest. Only a small minority, 10%, felt that their choice for a sustainably sourced product would not make a difference Moreover, nearly 30% of all consumers responded that they actively look for forest certification labels when shopping. “As the leading forest certification organisation, we are encouraged that consumers recognise the benefits of forest certification, with the PEFC label enabling them to consume responsibly and to reward companies that label,” said Ben Gunneberg, Secretary General of PEFC International. “It shows that certification is being recognised on the shelves when consumers are making their choices whilst they are deciding upon which products to purchase,” Ben added. The research shows that over half of all consumers (54%) consider certification labels as the most reassuring proof that environmental and sustainable development considerations have been taken into account. Other means of proof include country of origin (30%), brand (24%) and recommendations by family/friends and media (17% and 16% respectively). The overwhelming majority of consumers globally - more than 80% - want companies to use labels on products to communicate their responsible sourcing practices to them. Only 4% disagreed that companies should use labels. “With labels being the most trusted source of information by consumers about whether a product is environmentally and socially responsible, the PEFC label demonstrates to consumers that a company is addressing their expectations,” emphasised Mr. Gunneberg. “In short, the PEFC label adds real value to a company’s brand.” The survey shows that PEFC is the most trusted global forest certification label, slightly ahead of FSC, the Forest Stewardship Council. Internationally, 40% of consumers know a global forest certification label; the label recognition of PEFC is at 21%. The first PEFC Global Consumer Survey was undertaken by German-based GfK on behalf of PEFC International with a sample of a total of 13,000 people in 13 countries, 1,000 men and women aged 16+ years per country, in Australia, Austria, Brazil, China, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Sweden, UK and USA. www.pefc.co.uk

Gold foiling: The facts and myths David Chill of Versatility in Print give us an insight
I
T IS A misnomer that foil printing is difficult to source and expensive to produce, but I will perhaps agree that many companies cannot find a local foil printer in their area. I know these are sweeping statements but as a foil printer for nearly 20 years I hear this all the time! What I would like to do is dispel a few myths and perhaps give a few explanations to the above statement, but also over the series of the next few articles talk about some of the trends that we have seen in foil printing over the last few years and go back and explain a little bit about the recent history of foil printing from a perspective of a small print /copy shop and their requirements. Let’s go back to the late 1970s and early 1980s when foil printing for the small user exploded in
this country. This was a time before the internet (who can remember that now – it really does seem like a distant memory) a time of recession and mass redundancies and a time when the print industry was yet again in transition and changing from older technologies to newer practices. Many typesetters and compositors were being laid off and with their redundancy money and knowledge of printing were buying small hand operated hot foil printing machines and setting up in business. Times and profit margins for these people were good . With their industry contacts business came to them. For a small set up fee you could purchase and run your own business from home or small premises – those were the days. Hot foil printing was popular with the small business owner as it
would give them access to good quality looking printing, in small quantities at an affordable price with a fairly quick turnaround – and it looked unique. Colour printing was mainly lithographic and expensive in comparison, Oh! howtimes have changed. Fast forward 30 years and all the people who bought hot foil printers have long since retired or passed away. Most processes are now digitally printed and automated; business print owners do not wish or want to print by hand. Printing is now not the craft it used to be. We rely on computerised programmes for everything we do, therefore foil printing has been left behind as it has not adapted, just stayed the same — but as I will come to later it is now attracting a whole new and different sector of individuals . It is still popular and going strong you just need to open your mind to the possibilities it offers. To give you an idea of its rise and fall and now rise again, I can give you some figures from the early 1990s as one of the founding members of Foilink and in later years the Chairman of The National Foil Printers Club – an organisation dedicated to the smaller foil printer. We had around 900 members at the summit of membership and just less than that number attending our annual exhibitions. When we closed in 2009 we had less than 100 members and very little new blood coming into the profession. Let’s not dwell on the past, but let’s move on to the future. Foil printing for the smaller organisation is still ‘Alive and Kicking’ in 2015, but still difficult to find, Why? To be brutally honest foil printers are just not good at marketing themselves, in fact they are lousy at it and letting people out there
FEBRUARY 2015 | QUICK PRINT PRO | NEW PROFIT CENTRE | 27
know who and where they are and what they can do, in fact I bet you every city and large town will have several beavering away in small back rooms and sheds — you just can’t find them, unless you know them! I have to say that the internet has at least helped with this in some way.
NOW PERHAPS A LITTLE ‘FANFAIR’ FOR FOIL PRINTING It can be great for small runs of items from 50 – 2000 pieces by hand (an average order size); It looks expensive, but is relatively cheap to produce; You cannot do it on your own small printer at home; It adds class and quality to whatever it goes on to; Turnaround can be fairly speedy (quicker than most people think – to dispel the myth); You can print not only on paper and card but also on to plastic, leather, wood and a variety of other substrates; Foil printing is not just gold and silver but so much more, not only matt and gloss colours, but metallic colours and holographic foils which lend themselves to create unique effects on printed matter; and it’s great for printing onto made up promotional items. Ideal for the latest trends which are double thick/ heavy duty boards that cannot go through digital printers such as 540g, 700g and 1050g GF Smith Board (duplex and triplex stock). Also for the current trend of debossing onto business cards (I shall come on to debossing and embossing at a later stage, everyone always mixes these two up) – this cannot be done by litho or digital machines. And because it can’t been done with ‘mass production’ is perhaps the appeal of the cards. It seems as the economy improves business people are looking for alternative ideas and ways for promoting their business. The trend seems to be to create a simple but elegant business card, with simple type faces . Popular colour combinations are often gloss black foil on matt black or just a debossed impression on a solid black or colour Because customers and in fact printers get it muddled up all the time here is the definition of
the various methods… Embossing is when an item is raised above the surface of the board or paper. Debossing is when you make an impression into the stock or board often by the application of extra pressure on your machine and this creates an indent. The more pressure the greater the deboss. Blind Embossing or Debossing is using these methods without a foil or ink colour and is becoming increasingly more popular with customers as it gives a very subtle and classic effect on stationery creating a high quality finish. The enquiry that ‘always gets me’ is when people ask for a card or an item to be embossed when they really mean foil printed. It always takes a time just to educate the customer a little but often you will find that it is worth it and in the long run I have found the customer will always be delighted with the outcome. The other bonus to you as a copy shop/digital print shop is that foil printing cannot really be achieved at home or by the budding graphic designer as it is a slightly specialist area and they will need to come back to you time and time again for reprints as you will hold the blocks/plates on their behalf and once they have paid for the initial plates to be made, which in most cases are relatively inexpensive, (these can be used for well in excess of 50,000 impressions) you have a good loyal retained customer. You can as I am sure you are aware foil print on to most types of stocks and media from serviettes to inch thick books and four inch high boxes – and so much more. So who are the new breed of foil printers and to which areas do we sell most of our machines. Over recent years there has been a massive trend towards the personalisation of products especially. IPad covers, notebooks, pen cases, leather tags and telephone covers. Also there seems to be a growing demand for personalised book covers for both private use and for dissertations and thesis. The wedding market as always stays strong and attracts many people to hot foil printing.
Like all things these days everything seems to follow fashion trends. If I go back 10 years perhaps a good 70% of items I printed regularly were printed in gold compared with 30% in silver. In the last couple of years that has almost exactly reversed with 30% being printed in gold and now a massive 70% in silver( or if you want you can call call it platinium). But the biggest trend in the last year has certainly been customers asking for rose gold (basically it’s a pink/gold colour mix as the name suggests ) and I have to say it looks absolutely stunning and is now the height of fashion. My tip for the future is also copper and bronze – you heard it here first. What a lot of people are often unaware of is that foils do not necessarily need to be metallic, we are all used to gold, silver and copper and all the other metallic shades, but a lot of people do not realise that foil also comes in matt and gloss colours with no metallic finish at all and it is one of the most effective ways of printing white onto a coloured solid background — also one of the best ways of printing white on black and other varieties of reverse out printing. Another trend which seems to have come over the water from our American friends is edge painted cards particularly popular on the thick GF Smith Board. Using specialist Japanese Inks you can now offer a range of cards with thick edges painted in your colour of choice to give a little bit of the ‘WOW’ factor. Choose a vibrant colour and really make your cards standout from the competition. The thicker the card the more dramatic the impression but it works particularly well on 540, 700 and 1050 gram boards. Edge painting I doubt will become mainstream because it really needs to be done by hand on small quantities, but it really does make a difference. These days in a difficult and competitive market you need to be able to offer your customer a product that is either unique or they cannot produce with a home printer. Print on Windows WHEN Melony Rocque-Hewitt took over her newly-built year three classroom at Handcross Primary School in West Sussex she faced the challenge of creating artwork for its many windows. She turned to Epson who helped her transform the room with stunning Egyptian window graphics. “My new classroom is part of a new several hundred thousand pound extension. Large and bright it has a wall that is basically all glass,” says Melony. “As I have a background in large-format graphics and printing, I knew that window graphics would not only make my classroom unusually striking, but the images would provide a perfect backdrop to the learning experience.” Luckily for Melony ancient Egypt was the topic for the autumn term. “I couldn’t have asked for a better project. The images from ancient Egypt are very arresting and powerful. I knew that the images I had chosen would not only add colour and depth to the classroom but would really inspire the children to want to learn about this fascinating subject.” She had thought of printing them out on A3 acetate and then placing these decoratively on the windows and glass door. “Although they would probably look OK for a while, it really felt like a massive compromise. I’ve seen what great window graphics can do to a space. I wanted to make the new classroom look very special and I wanted to create a real wow factor for my children and their parents. Also, as I have external windows it would only be a matter of time before the acetate came unstuck and the images faded due to temperature changes and UV light.” Before teaching Melony had been involved in the large format digital print industry, writing about it for 15 or so years. “I decided to approach Epson to ask them for help and they were fantastic. Epson not only created five largeformat window graphics for my classroom but also three extra images for the other junior classes so that they could have some great window art too.” The window graphics were printed onto high-performance self-adhesive vinyl using Epson’s 64-inch SureColor SC-S70600 wide-format printer. The combination of Epson’s UltraChrome GSX ink-set and proven Micro Piezo TFP printheads ensure that the vivid colours, solid whites and metallic effects were of the highest quality and clarity and long lasting. Besides featuring CMYK, light magenta, light cyan, light black and orange, the 10-colour SC-S70600 supports white and metallic ink simultaneously - perfect for the colourful, highly-detailed, eye-catching designs that Melony had selected. Additionally, the GSX inks are hard wearing, odourless and nickel-free perfectly suited to the application within the classroom. “The window graphics form a great backdrop to the children’s own mummified cats, scarab beetles and papyrus paper,” says Melony. “Our next topic is the Stone Age and I’ve already got an idea of what I want my glass display to look like. It’s just a case of making it happen!” www.epson.co.uk

IRISH born textile designer Berni Raeside has launched her debut collection which includes digitally printed textiles as well as her more traditional knitted items. Inspired by the windswept and craggy coastline of the west coast of Ireland, each knitted piece is hand-made on vintage knitting machines as heirloom pieces to be handed down - just like the Aran jumpers before them. She also introduced her unique collection of designs for knitted-look wallpaper and digitally printed cushions, tote bags, table cloths and napkins. Born and bred in Dublin, Berni has lived in the East Midlands for over 20 years and recently graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Textile Design. She was also confirmed as a full member of the Design and Crafts Council of Ireland just in time for the official launch of the Detta brand at Showcase Ireland in January. “It is such an honour to have my work recognised by the country I grew up in, and where I was first introduced to textile design – and what better place to launch my debut collection than my home town of Dublin at the start of a new year in 2015.” The blanket and cushion designs lend a nod to the traditional stitches of the Aran jumper but with a modern, fresh approach. Traditional knitting techniques are mixed with designs for digital textile printing and wall coverings to create unique designs for cosy, warm and inviting spaces. Her debut collection included a range of surface pattern designs, printed fabrics, wallpapers and knitted blankets and cushions for the home. The starting points of this collection are Berni’s creative sketchbooks and photographs of the landscape taken during a field trip to two of the islands; Aran Mor and Inis Meain. These include images of the miles of stone-walls that cover the islands, the crashing Atlantic sea and craggy rock formations. In addition to photography, ink and bleach drawings form the basis of the original artwork in the sketchbooks and mark-making represents the natural patterns of the landscape, capturing the movement of the sea. Strong brush strokes are combined with looser patterning and when the bleach is applied on top it creates a three dimensional effect. For this collection, Berni created a series of Aran-inspired knitted fabric samples that she then scanned in and worked on to create repeat patterns for digital printing onto surfaces such as fabrics and wallpapers. JOB DESCRIPTION A monastery decided to start a fish and chips store. When the store opened, a client comes in, and asks one of the clerics: are you the fish fryer? Oh, no, the cleric answers, I’m the chip monk!
THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA A seaman meets a pirate in a bar, and they take turns to tell their adventures on the seas. The seaman notes that the pirate has a peg leg, hook, and an eye patch. Curious, the seaman asks “So, how did you end up with the peg-leg?” The pirate replies “I was swept overboard into a school of sharks. Just as my men were pulling me out, a shark bit my leg off”. “Wow!” said the seaman. “What about the hook”? “Well...”, replied the pirate, “We were boarding an enemy ship and were battling the other sailors with swords. One of the enemy cut my hand clean off.” “Incredible!” remarked the seaman. “How did you get the eye patch”? “A seagull dropping fell into my eye”, replied the pirate. “You lost your eye to a seagull dropping?” the sailor asked. “Well...” said the pirate, “That was my first day with the hook.”
INSTANT PRESS A copier salesman and his wife were cleaning out their car one day when he came across a ticket from the local dry cleaning shop. The date stamped on the ticket showed it was over three years old. They both laughed and tried to remember which of them might have forgotten to pick up his suit so many years ago. ‘Do you think the suit will still be in the shop?’ the salesman asked. ‘Not very likely,’ his wife said. ‘It’s worth a try,’ he said, pocketing the ticket. He went downstairs, hopped into the car, and drove to the dry cleaning shop. With a straight face, he handed the ticket to the man behind the counter. With a face just as straight, the man said, ‘Just a minute. I’ll have to look for it.’ He disappeared into a dark corner at the back of the shop. Two minutes later, the man called out, ‘Here it is!’ ‘No kidding?’ he called back. ‘That’s terrific! Who would have thought it would still be here after all this time.’ The man came back to the counter, empty-handed. ‘Your suit will be ready next Thursday,’ he said calmly.
DANGEROUS BREED A woman was leaving a coffee shop with her morning coffee when she noticed a most unusual funeral procession approaching the nearby cemetery. A long black hearse was followed by a second long black hearse about 50 feet behind. Behind the second hearse was a solitary woman walking a pit bull on a leash. Behind her were 200 women walking single file. The woman couldn’t stand the curiosity. She respectfully approached the woman walking the dog and said, ‘I am so sorry for your loss, and I know now is a bad time to disturb you, but I’ve never seen a funeral like this. Whose funeral is it?’ The woman replied, ‘Well, that first hearse is for my husband.’ ‘What happened to him?’ The woman replied, ‘My dog attacked and killed him.’ She inquired further, ‘Well, who is in the second hearse?’ The woman answered, ‘My motherin-law. She was trying to help my husband when the dog turned on her’. A poignant and thoughtful moment of silence passed between the two women. ‘Can I borrow the dog?’ ‘Get in line!’ A salesman runs into the bar and says, “Quick, pour me five shots of your best scotch.” The bartender pours them and the man drinks them as fast as he can. “Wow that’s the fastest I’ve seen anyone drink,” says the bartender. “Well you’d drink that fast if you had what I had,” The salesman says “Oh really,” the bartender says, “What do you have?” The man replies “no money.”
A WOMAN’S RANDOM THOUGHTS If you love something, set it free. If it comes back, it will always be yours. If it doesn’t come back, it was never yours to begin with. But, if it just sits in your living room, messes up your stuff, eats your food, uses your telephone, takes your money, and doesn’t appear to realise that you had set it free... You either married it or gave birth to it.
SALE FROG IN A BANK... A frog goes into a bank and approaches the cashier. He can see from the teller’s nameplate that her name is ‘Mrs Patricia Wack’. Trying not to think about sniggering or to laugh out loud (the poor girl obviously married into the name), he says:’ Hello Mrs.Wack, I’d like to get a loan to buy a boat and go on a long holiday.’ Patti looks at the frog in disbelief and asks how much he wants to borrow. The frog says £30,000.The cashier asks his name. The frog frowns at this interrogation. He says that his name is Kermit Jagger and that it’s OK, he knows the bank manager. Patti has some doubts about the name ‘Kermit Jagger’, but keen to give good customer service she politely explains that £30,000 is a substantial amount of money and that he will need to secure some collateral against the loan. She asks if he has anything he can use as collateral. The frog says, ‘Yes, I have this,’ and produces a tiny pink porcelain elephant, about half an inch tall. Bright pink and perfectly formed. Very confused, Patti decides to talk to her boss, and she explains to the frog that she’ll have to consult with the manager and disappears into a back office. She finds the manager and says: You’re not going to believe this but there’s a frog out there who claims to be called Kermit Jagger, saying that he knows you, and that he wants to borrow £30,000. And he wants to use this as collateral.’ She holds up the tiny pink elephant saying. ‘I mean, its ridiculous: what on earth is going on? So the bank manager holds up the pink elephant and replies… It’s a knick knack, Patti Wack. Give the frog a loan. His old man’s a Rolling Stone.
DOCTORS ORDERS Maurice an 82 year-old man went to the doctor for his physical. A few days later the doctor saw Maurice walking down the street with a gorgeous young lady on his arm. A couple of days later the doctor spoke to Maurice and said, “You’re really dong great, aren’t you?” Maurice replied, “Just doing what you said, Doc: “Get a hot mamma and be cheerful.” The doctor said, “I did not say that. I said, “You got a heart murmur. Be careful.”
MAKE A WISH A married salesman left work early one Friday afternoon. Instead of going home, however, he spent the weekend (and his money) partying with the boys. When he finally returned home on Sunday night, his wife really got on his case and stayed on him. After a couple of hours of swearing and screaming, his wife paused and pointed at him and made him an offer,’ How would you like it if you didn’t see me for a couple of days?’ The salesman couldn’t believe his luck. So he looked up, smiled and said, That’ll suit me just fine!’ Monday went by, and the man didn’t see his wife. Tuesday and Wednesday went by and he still didn’t see her. Come Thursday, the swelling went down a bit and he could see her a little... just out of the corner of his left eye.
GIVE US A RING! A sales guy was standing at the bottom of the stairs listening to the bells. He decided to go up and meet the ringer. So he raced up the many stairs until finally he was standing not three meters away from Quazimodo. In a soft voice he said “can I ring the bells” as the hunchback pushed his head against the bell. “No, training is needed or you will be in danger” The sales guy replied to this “C’mon please, I’ll be careful” “OK, but be very careful” Minutes went by as he prepared himself and then pushed the bell with all his might. Alas on his first heave he lost balance and when the bell swung back it hit him on the head and knocked him clean out of out the window. He fell down the tower to his death. Quazimodo raced down the stairs with all possible speed, when he was at the bottom a small crowd had gathered with a policeman examining the body. He yelled to the crowd “Does anybody know this man?” Quazimodo then answered “No, but his face rings a bell”
SALES AGREEMENT An old salesman goes to the Wizard to ask him if he can remove a curse he has been living with for the last 50 years. The wizard says, “Maybe, but you will have to tell me the exact words that were used to put the curse on you.” The old man says without hesitation, “I now pronounce you man and wife.”

JOE’S HEADACHE Joe was a successful copier salesman, but as he got older he was increasingly hampered by incredible headaches. When his career and love life started to suffer, he sought medical help. After being referred from one specialist to another, he finally came across an old country doctor who solved the problem. ‘The good news is I can cure your headaches... The bad news is that it will require castration. You have a very rare condition, which causes your testicles to press up against the base of your spine, and the pressure creates one hell of a headache. The only way to relieve the pressure is to remove the testicles.’ Joe was shocked and depressed. He wondered if he had anything to live for. He couldn’t concentrate long enough to answer, but decided he had no choice but to go under the knife. When he left the hospital he was without a headache for the first time in 20 years, although he felt like he was missing an important part of himself. As he walked down the street, he realised that he felt like a different person. He could make a new beginning and live a new life. He saw a men’s clothing store and thought, ‘That’s what I need, a new suit.’ He entered the shop and told the assistant, ‘I’d like a new suit.’ The elderly tailor eyed him briefly and said, ‘Let’s see ... Size 44 long.’ Joe laughed, ‘That’s right, how did you know?’ ‘Been in the business 60 years!’ Joe tried on the suit. It fit perfectly. As Joe admired himself in the mirror, the shop assistant asked, ‘How about a new shirt?’ Joe thought for a moment and then said, ‘Sure.’ It was nice being sold to for a change. The assistant eyed Joe and said, ‘Let’s see... 34 sleeve and 16 and a half neck.’
Dolphins are so intelligent.
Joe was surprised, ‘That’s right, how did you know?’ ‘Been in the business 60 years!’ Joe tried on the shirt, and it fit perfectly. As Joe adjusted the collar in the mirror, the shop assistant asked, ‘How about new shoes?’ Joe was on a roll and said, ‘Sure.’ The shop worker eyed Joe’s feet and said, ‘Let’s see... 9-1/2.’ Joe was astonished, ‘That’s right, how did you know?’ ‘Been in the business 60 years!’ Joe tried on the shoes and they fit perfectly. Joe walked comfortably around the shop and the assistant asked, ‘How about some new underwear?’ Joe thought for a second and said, ‘Sure.’ The shop assistant stepped back, eyed Joe’s waist and said, ‘Let’s see... Size 36.’ Joe laughed, ‘Ah ha! I got you! I’ve worn size 34 since I was 18 years old.’ The shop assistant shook his head, ‘You can’t wear a size 34. A 34 underwear would press your testicles up against the base of your spine and give you one hell of a headache.’
FOOD FOR THOUGHT A Doctor was addressing a large diet conscious audience, ‘The material we put into our stomachs is enough to have killed most of us sitting here, years ago. Red meat is awful. Soft drinks corrode your stomach lining… Chinese food is loaded with MSG. High fat diets can be disastrous, and none of us realises the long-term harm caused by the germs in our drinking water. However, there is one thing that is the most dangerous of all and we all have eaten, or will eat it. Can anyone here tell me what food it is that causes the most grief and suffering for years after eating it?’ After several seconds of quiet, a 75-year-old man in the front row raised his hand, and softly said, ‘Wedding Cake.’

PLANE LOGIC Four people are in an airplane, the pilot, the smartest man in the world, the richest man in the world, and a teenage graphic designer. The airplane experiences some difficulties, and the pilot informs the three passengers that the plane is going to crash, and there are only three parachutes on the plane. The richest man in the world takes one, because he says that his lawyers will sue everyone else on the plane if he doesn’t survive. The smartest man in the world takes a parachute, because he thinks that the world would be a worse place without him. The pilot says to the graphic designer “There’s only one parachute left, I’ll fight you for it.” “That won’t be necessary,” said the young designer, “The smartest man in the world took my backpack.”
PASS THAT BOUNCER This guy wanted to get into a night club with a few friends. Unfortunately the dress code stated that without a tie he couldn’t get in. His friends didn’t have a spare necktie between them but one of them said, ‘Hey, I’ve got an idea. I have a set of jumper cables in the back of my car. Tie them round your neck, tuck in the ends and you should pass by the doormen. On re-entering the club, one bouncer was suspicious of his neckwear. On inspection, he relented as long as the guy behaved and didn’t start anything!
ALARM IN THE HIVE
A long time ago, there was a beehive in the middle of a forest. Every day, as worker bees do, they would go out into their fields, gather pollen from the flowers, and bring it back to DOCTOR, make honey. The bees had a problem, though, CHECK MY LEG because every so often an intruder A man walks into a doctor’s office would come around, such as a fox and asks the doctor to inspect his who wanted the honey, or kids who leg.
