Healeys expands its digital operations Heidelberg has pulled out the stops to supply Healeys with a Polar D66 Plus guillotine in a hurry. Healeys’ digital operation is rapidly expanding and the company is both reorganising and building to increase this department by a third, giving it about a quarter of the factory space. Now instead of sharing the finishing capacity with the litho department it will have its own dedicated equipment and staff. “We have three toner-based digital presses and anticipate some upgrades in the coming months but it will not be inkjet for us for the time being,” says Philip Dodd, managing director. “At the same time our webto-print expert is developing another portal for some specialist products. These factors combine to mean we will be handling a much higher volume of digital jobs this year and so having a dedicated guillotine and finishing area makes sense.” Healeys already uses Polar kit (two of three guillotines currently installed) so although it did review the options it had faith in the brand. It likes Polar reliability and, because Heidelberg is its main litho supplier, it makes sense to have common back up services. The digital finishing department will also house a cutter-creaser, laminator and foiler and Mr Dodd predicts more will be added this year. Digital demand is increasing with new customers but also successful existing clients, including many needing to promote property in a speedy and responsive way. Healeys cites its values as “care, create and collaborate” and this appears to be good for business. www.heidelberg.co.uk
Century Studios Improves Production Efficiency After conducting a production review Century Studios chose to streamline throughput and expand capacity with a CCM Premier 92 guillotine, from Terry Cooper Services. The Nottingham creative operation that counts high street names such as DFS, Paul Smith and HSBC among its customer base, runs two HP Indigo presses. After reviewing how to optimise output, the ability to complete larger sheets more efficiently and cost effectively was identified as a clear way to maximise production. Director Wayne Salvin explains: “We could see that by finishing bigger sheets we would be able to manage more work and that in turn would help us expand capacity while still meeting tight turnaround times. When we looked at the numbers a bigger guillotine made absolute sense.” The CCM Premier 92 is two sizes larger than Century Studio’s previous guillotine. It includes central lubrication for wearfree bearings and longer intervals between servicing, large air side tables for easier paper handling, auto knife function for repeat cutting, and a larger diameter backguage spindle for faster backguage action. Its deep clamp opening accepts more paper to reduce overall cutting time and infra red
slimline light barriers. Safety is also enhanced with an optical cutting safety line. Enhanced features include programmability and memory storage. Century Studios has a long standing relationship with Terry Cooper Services and as such Wayne was aware of the CCM Premier
options before making the final choice. He says: “We knew and trusted Terry Cooper Services. We liked its ability to handle the sheet size plus its ease of set up and programmability.” He concludes: “It will pay for itself in the next few months.” www.terrycooperservices.co.uk

Epson UK predictions The technology is right, the brand expansion opportunities are there and greater political certainty will return in 2018, argues Phil McMullin “Expand the brand should be the print industry’s motto for the coming year,” says Phil McMullin, sales manager of Epson UK. “Printers can, and will, continue to diversify, expanding their product portfolio by using wide format technology in new markets. Increasingly the industry is expected to take on a more advisory or consultancy role and, as the keeper of a client’s brand, printers are in an exceptional position to help their customers add value to their name and reputation. “We will see a resurgence of eco-solvent technology as the ink set of choice for discerning printers who want to produce vibrant outdoor displays and vehicle graphics. There will be further expansion of dye sublimation technology for short runs of bespoke graphics, promotional products and textiles. Digital printing technology can now deliver outstanding quality across a wide array of applications without compromising productivity and printers need to take advantage or lose competitiveness to others. The investment level in this sector is very competitive.” Printers should regularly check their calendars for special opportunities like the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in May which will undoubtedly provide some interesting print opportunities. There are also regular events, from London Fashion Week through to the FIFA World Cup, which might inspire promotional material. Also, over the past year, Epson has introduced SurePress L-4533 aqueous series of label presses and the SureColor SC F-9300 dye sublimation printer. Epson invests 1.4m Euros a day in R&D globally (about 5.2% of annual revenue) so undoubtedly there will be developments in the next 12 months. “I am optimistic for the coming year,” says Mr McMullin. “I think some of the political uncertainty will evaporate and business confidence will build. Printing is holding strong, at least in the sectors we serve and with the future-minded technology that we offer.” www.epson.co.uk
General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into effect in just a few months and, once it does, print businesses need to be ready. That’s why South Yorkshire trade printers, Route One Print, have created a printer’s guide to GDPR. GDPR brings in new legislation about how companies can collect, store and use personal data. It affects all businesses and failing to meet the new requirements could result in large fines. Route One Print’s latest eBook helps print businesses prepare so that they don’t get caught out. “We always try to work with our customers so that their business can grow and thrive alongside our own” says Brand Manager, Jack Wilmott, “This eBook is designed to clarify the aspects of GDPR that are relevant to printers and to provide actionable objectives to help them get ready.” The eBook explores each element of GDPR; from how to collect personal data and gain true consent, to what rights the consumer has over their own data. Each explanation comes with a breakdown of what it means for printers and a checklist of actions that need to be taken as a result. Route One Print don’t just cover what needs to be done to comply with the new regulations, they also look at what GDPR can do for printers. As the rules for online marketing get stricter, new opportunities for printers are coming to the surface. Mr Wilmott adds, “We predict that printers are in for a boost as a consequence of GDPR. Companies looking for an alternative to email marketing will come to printers looking to produce more direct mail campaigns and other print marketing.” Route One Print’s eBook talks about how printers can take advantage of this and other oportunities in the face of GDPR. Epic’s new investment in Duplo Systems A strong relationship with Duplo over the last eight years has been cemented by Epic Print’s new investment in the print finishing pioneer’s saddle stitcher, that will achieve vast improvements in efficiency. Duplo will be supplying Epic with an iSaddle 2 system, that will slash traditional processes and provide full automation. An investment in full automation provides benefits to the business by freeing up senior technicians’ time, which enables the business to be able to handle the four-fold increase in the number of work orders. Epic, which employs 26 people and has a £2.5million turnover, operates across a broad spectrum of quality print for both their sectors: secondary packaging and marketing communications and the Duplo iSaddle 2 system will massively improve Epic’s output for its marketing services work. Managing Director Mark Downey said: “Epic has enjoyed a strong relationship with Duplo over the last eight years and has deep confidence in both its innovation and engineering reliability. “The decision to move from traditional saddle binders was not taken lightly. However, the drive for quicker make readies through the impressive automation available on the machine, made a compelling case for the investment. We expect to make a massive improvement in efficiency and the comprehensive tests that were carried out, indicated that the iSaddle out-performs the current in-house traditional approach to fold, gather and stitch, even in the longer run arena. “Typically, five years ago we’d be looking at print runs averaging 5,000, but this is now down to 2,000, sometimes even less. Whilst during this time, the number of orders has risen by around four-fold, so we needed to upgrade our finishing processes. We are confident that the iSaddle and its collating towers and inline scoring will provide us with ways in which we can enhance our performance in other areas of binding too, such as wiro,
perfect binding and short-run case binding. An additional benefit will be the much smaller footprint of the machine compared to our existing kit.” Mark added: “The Duplo sales team really helped in our choice because they really understand the environment and can understand the technical detail. Duplo is an extremely professional organisation and provides a fully flexible approach.” The Duplo iSaddle 2 system – with twin towers, four-head stitching and 3-knife trimmer – was installed in December 2017. Jason Davies, Regional Sales Manager for Duplo UK, said: “Shorter runs are a fact of life in today’s print industry, so companies like Epic are recognising the need to combine saddle technology with our intelligent automated precision feature, running from flat sheet, as opposed to folded sections. “Our Duplo products have the ability to turn around a large number of jobs, that are high in volume, as a total entity throughout the day.” www.duplointernational.com

Continued export growth at Gate 7 With the recently created “Mimaki Digital Suite” sitting at the heart of its operation, Gateshead-based automotive component manufacturing specialists Gate 7, continues to take great strides in delivering on its promise of providing innovative print solutions on a global scale. With two offices in North Carolina and Pennsylvania as well as its worldwide headquarters in Newcastle upon Tyne, the company lists major clients including JCB, Caterpillar, Kuhn and Volvo for whom it produces high quality decals and liveries for new vehicles that are subjected to harsh and unforgiving working environments. As such, Gate 7 has developed leading and innovative workflows that ensure the demands of its clients are consistently realised. “We take a unique approach to business,” says managing director, Kate Wickham. “We’ve worked hard to nurture our supply chain through product development, finding new ways of improving manufacturing and constantly innovating.” Gate 7 underwent a rebranding exercise five years ago, to coincide with the appointment of Wickham as managing director and soon realised the importance of building relationships with its supplier base, ensuring they shared the same passions and innovative philosophies. As the digital revolution gained momentum it galvanised Gate 7’s plans to source the right equipment, enlisting the services of Mimaki reseller, Your Print Specialists as the company purchased its first Mimaki JV33. Operations manager, George Heads explains, “When we look back at this decision it raises a wry smile on all our faces when we consider the Mimaki Digital Suite now boasts a further five state-of-the-art printers. These include the revolutionary Mimaki UJF-7151plus flatbed LED UV, the high speed, roll fed JV400 SUV and the flagship JV300 and CJV300 solvent printers.” The group policy is to mirror its capital equipment throughout, offering the same quality products on a global scale. US-based Gate 7 LLC hosts an equally impressive line-up of Mimaki digital solutions with three Mimaki UJF-7151plus printers and eight JV300s. The latest Mimaki purchases have enabled Gate 7 to widen the scope of printable substrates to include polypropylene and membrane switch panels. Heads explains some of the reasons behind why big brands opt for their solutions. “We rigorously test all of the components that go into manufacturing a decal or membrane switch panel,” he says. “We offer our own unique warranty system that ensures all the components meet and exceed an outdoor performance characteristic of not less than five years and all the Mimaki inks are tested using our own in-house UV weather, substance
and environmental testing equipment. Our challenge is to meet and exceed our customers’ specifications.” This ethos is echoed by Wickham, “Our customers have much higher expectations for decals,” she suggests. “Whilst screen printing still forms an important part of our business, our ongoing transition to digital is helping shape our customers and the way they present their products.” A recent global rebrand for agricultural supplier, Kuhn, has seen Gate 7 deliver revolutionary new liveries for the company’s machinery that far exceed its previous identity. “Customers are looking for a global standard of quality and a global supplier, yet one that thinks and responds locally,” Heads continues. “Our understanding of the technical capabilities of the Mimaki printers has ensured our products are superior to anything offered elsewhere. The addition of the orange and light black inks for the JV300 and CJV300 solvent printers is a case in point; it enables us to include finer detail, more sophisticated tonal work and powerful corporate colours in the designs and it’s this sort of supplier-led innovation that’s helping drive our plans for significant digital expansion in 2018.” A focus on delivering quality control and a desire from customers for reduced lead times is also influencing the company’s development. “We replicate our processes and pricing structures in the UK and the USA and our specialist approach makes us an obvious choice for global partnering,” states Wickham, who recently received an MBE for Services
to Exports and Outward Investments from Princess Anne at Buckingham Palace. “Export business currently makes up 60% of Gate 7’s revenue and the award adds another level of credibility to what we strive to do.” Garry Brown, managing director at Your Print Specialists, credits Gate 7 for its innovative methods. “It is refreshing to see how Gate 7 has approached the production of decals and branding solutions and something myself and the team at YPS are extremely proud to have been involved in. Their whole process is quality oriented and visionary — a philosophy which breeds success,” he remarks. “Seeing the operation in its entirety is inspiring — and being involved with the Mimaki Digital Suite installations has added a real sense of purpose.” Future plans for the company include new finishing lines to be installed in order to eliminate bottlenecks which develop as a result of the Mimaki expansion. “Innovative decal design helps brands stand out,” concludes Wickham, “Our graphics create visual impact for companies that compete in increasingly competitive markets and we’re therefore an increasingly important partner for them. Flexible systems, investment in R&D and strong supplier relationships ensure we’re unique in delivering this level of service and product.” Mimaki is exclusively distributed in the UK and Ireland by Hybrid Services and its full product portfolio can be found by visiting www. hybridservices.co.uk. Canon’s imagePRESS C850 anniversary upgrade Canon has unveiled sales details for its imagePRESS series of production colour presses on the anniversary of its launch. Across EMEA, more than 900 devices from the imagePRESS C850 series have been installed. Combined with the imagePRESS C650 model, an extension of the imagePRESS C850 series launched in March 2017, the installed base in EMEA exceeds 1,650 units. Since the launch of the imagePRESS C850 and C750 models in autumn 2016, feedback from commercial print service providers (PSPs) and in-house printing departments highlights the devices’ unique capabilities including auto-duplex banner printing, semi-automated page registration, the ability to print on a variety of different substrates and extended finishing capabilities – all of which are helping customers to explore new possibilities with digital print. Developed in line with market demand for high quality colour output, excellent productivity and extended media flexibility, the imagePRESS C850 series is helping PSPs and in-house print rooms to increase operational efficiencies, enabling them to focus on other value-added activities and open up new business opportunities. One of the customers is Solent Design Studio in Southampton, which installed the imagePRESS C750 and is driving new business as a result of the printer’s media versatility. Managing Director, Martin Reynolds, said: “The quality of the output from the imagePRESS, even on uncoated stocks, is very compelling for our customers. We can access new opportunities by taking on relatively small jobs for new clients and showcasing what we’re capable of. Our in-house design skills mean that we can offer customers creative suggestions for how to enhance their print, and the scope to work with such a broad range of substrates, gloss and matt finishes, including textured papers on the imagePRESS C750, enables us to bring these more ambitious concepts to life for clients at attractive costs.” The duplex banner printing option for the imagePRESS C750 has also
allowed Solent Design to expand into A4 landscape books, as well as producing smaller quantities of printed envelopes digitally. The new Canon equipment is driving sustained growth of the digital business, alongside its established litho print and design services. Duncan Smith, Director of Industrial and Production Solutions at Canon UK, said: “Customers looking to drive business growth with digital production need robust and versatile solutions that help them to say ‘yes’ to a wider variety of customer briefs. The reaction from the market in the UK for the imagePRESS C850 series over the last 12 months has been extremely positive. “The three presses are based on the same advanced technology as our flagship imagePRESS C10000VP production press and support our customers’ ambitions to extend their application capabilities. Our range of supporting software options from intuitive drivers to full end-toend workflow solutions also help to boost their operational efficiency. Customer feedback in the UK highlights that these products are already making a significant difference, helping them to evolve their businesses in line with changing customer needs. It’s great to see that technology innovation can play such an important role in inspiring businesses to realise new opportunities.” www.canon.co.uk

OKI Launches Pro9 Envelope Print System Making short-run envelope printing viable and profitable and offering unprecedented creative potential, OKI Europe Ltd’s new Pro9 Envelope Print System enables print shops and print houses to take advantage of evolving trends in direct marketing. It also opens up new opportunities in printing invitations and other high quality mailed products. The Envelope System provides users of OKI’s Pro9 series Graphic Arts printers with the scope to differentiate their business on two counts. First it enables short runs of variable data envelope printing in less time than it takes to produce printing plates and ink up a press and without any set-up costs. Secondly, the Pro9542 Envelope System offers brilliant white and striking colour on colour envelopes – with exceptional, eye-catching results. “Despite the great rise in direct marketing via email, consumers still see direct mail as more personal and trustworthy. Research by the Direct Marketing Association shows that in spite of the increasing number of online promotions direct mail still outperforms email; for example, its research showed that only 44% could recall a brand after an email campaign whereas 75% could do so after receiving direct mail,” says Shun Mochizuki, Senior Marketing Manager, Small Format Printers, OKI Europe Ltd. “However, because of the convenience of email 51% of businesses prefer to use a mixed campaign, hence the need for shorter but more
impactful, attention-seeking runs. The Pro9’s unparalleled ability to print CMKY + white and, in the case of the Pro9542, CMKY over white in one pass, will ensure print shops and print houses can offer something more striking and different than their competitors.” OKI’s Envelope Print System includes an envelope feeder and conveyer developed by OKI to help drive productivity. Easy to set up and with great media flexibility the Envelope System includes an Envelope Fuser to reduce wrinkle and ensure uniform print across a wide range of designs. Squid takes window covering to a whole new level Squid self-adhesive fabric, designed for covering glass of any type, shape or size, delivers a new innovation for aesthetic window screening with ergonomic values. The luxury finish can be digitally printed or applied as a natural fabric, with both effects offering one-way vision for privacy. The patented material is easy to install, with no fixtures or fittings needed. At the top of its game, Squid’s innovative fabric — the result of a new and advanced production technique – is moisture and heat resistant, and easy to tailor to exact specifications. Its minimalist style means it compliments all types of architecture and by keeping a lot of the sun’s heat out, withstanding extreme humidity and being breathable, it’s the ideal solution for windows exposed to strong sunshine. Squid is the future, available today, exclusively from CMYUK. Johan Bonner, Director at Squid, says: “At Fespa this year, more than once we heard professionals say that Squid was, for them, the most innovative print medium they had encountered in years. The look, feel and endless creative possibilities sets it into a new category of applications.” In a time when environmental issues gain attention in all boardrooms, having an attractive and versatile material that blocks heat from the sun ticks a very large box. Squid can be used on large glazed office interiors, flat skylights,
sliding windows, glass roofs or conservatories and glass partitions; and unlike plastic counterparts, you can use Squid on HR++(+) and high-performance glass, too. It comes as an unprinted solution securing privacy and solar protection for the B2C and B2B window decoration markets; installation can be DIY or done by a professional. The printability of this high-quality substrate presents substantial commercial and marketing possibilities – retailers are able to print designs onto the fabric, creating unique shop window displays. With a current trend of giving offices a more contemporary feel, Squid fits the bill perfectly, and while it sticks to windows indefinitely, it can be removed easily without leaving unsightly residue. Available in five colours (Chalk, Bone, Oak, Ash and Rock), Squid’s style, versatility and simplicity have made it a big hit in the interior
design and architectural markets, breathing new life into homes, offices and public facilities worldwide. CMYUK is delighted to have been appointed exclusive distributor of Squid in the UK and Ireland. “This is a totally unique material and provides a fantastic new look for the window, retail and décor markets, allowing digital printers to offer a brand-new concept to their clients.” says Michael Crook, Commercial Director at CMYUK. He continues: “Squid was primarily developed for window decoration, however during development, it was discovered that it applied perfectly to walls and other flat surfaces too, due to the very lightweight textile and innovative adhesive, opening up even more possibilities such as exhibition and conference graphics, retail displays and DIY décor projects.” www.cmyuk.com

Portsmouth Uni solves digital perfect binding puzzle with new Obeli’s EasiBinder 800 Phil Herridge the Printing & Reprographics Supervisor at the University of Portsmouth, approached Christopher O’Brien, Sales Director of The Finishing Point Ltd (a trusted print finishing equipment and consumables supplier to the University) to discuss his requirement for a perfect binding solution. Chris spoke with enthusiasm about the New Obeli EasiBinder Perfectback Binding Machine, as a potential solution. The in-depth conversation revealed a number of requirements that their current equipment did not offer. Phil advised that the University needed a greater degree of automation and refinements such as “side gluing and the ability to use a stronger glue such as Planamelt”. On Chris’s recommendation Phil reviewed
the Obeli Easibinder 800 and stated that he was unable to find any other machine available in the market at the same cost that used the new hot melt binding glue; Planamelt. He was confident that this machine offered the best features for the most competitive price. He concluded from his own research and the advice provided by Chris that the EasiBinder 800 was the perfect machine for their needs; allowing them to provide a professional finish at a high speed
of up to 300 perfectly bound books or pads per hour. An added bonus was that the machine also runs perfectly with the latest Planamelt PUR/EVA Glue. This latest glue gives the customer the advantages of PUR without any of the down sides; instant cure and ultra-strong bind when partnered with the “high speed milling” Obeli EasiBinders. The decision was made and Phil purchased the Obeli EasiBinder 800 (capable of binding up to an A3 sized books) through The Finishing Point Ltd. The machine was delivered and installed by The Finishing Point’s fully trained engineering team, who also offered Phil and his team on-site training on how to operate the machine to its full potential. Before long Phil and his department were up and running
and instantly saw the benefits and improvements of the EasiBinder 800 against their previous perfect binder. The Finishing Point caught up with Phil a couple of months after install to check the customer was fully satisfied with the EasiBinder and they were not surprised to hear that Phil and his department were very happy with their purchase. Phil stated that “The Obeli EasiBinder 800 is an excellent robust machine which is easy to operate and provides a high quality finished product” The Sales Director of The Finishing Point Ltd, Christopher adds “The brand new range of Print Finishing Equipment from Obeli International is innovative and is leading the way in the latest Print Finishing technologies.” www.thefinishingpoint.co.uk

PIXEL PROPHET
AN INFINITE NUMBER OF MONKEYS… Martin Christie measures the evolution of the customer
[T]
here was a time before computers, though it may be difficult for those born in the last couple of decades to believe or at least imagine what it was like to live in it. Those, whom we now call millennials, will surely believe it as part of the last dark age, in grim monotone hue, devoid of all the thrilling advantages of the digital age. And yet we did manage, not only to survive but communicate, do business and arrange appointments which we generally kept. Trains ran more or less on time, or at least better than Southern Rail manages in the present day, phones managed to work without batteries, and the mail was delivered promptly at breakfast time. Okay, I confess to a slightly rosy tint on my glasses as I write, but you get the point. Not everything in the electronically guided world is such a massive improvement on what has gone before. We were, after all, assured by the ‘experts’ that the biggest problem of the digital future would be how to spend our increasing amount of leisure time. Little did they realise that far from allowing us to relax, the machines would intrude into every minute of our life with alerts and messages, so that we are never actually free unless we happen to pass out of signal range. And then we panic because we aren’t able to pick them up, like losing a comfort blanket. Now what is curious is that despite all this instant communication is that for all the quantity and immediacy, there is not that much of an improvement in actual accuracy of information or understanding. It’s almost as though the virtual fog of words conceals the important facts, or the very
quantity just confuses the issue. People may reply to your question but not actually tell you what you need to know, usually because they haven’t read it properly, so you end up with a ping pong dialogue which wastes time and still fails to sort the issue. This is the digital equivalent of people in traditional office environments who used to wander around with pieces of paper pretending that they were actually doing something. Now they have an electronic excuse and don’t even need to stretch their legs. It is estimated that if the amount of data, text, photos, email etc., contained in the average person’s iPhone were to be printed out if would occupy 30,000 A4 sheets of paper, and while this seems an extraordinary figure, even an exaggeration illustrates the dilemma the user has separating essential facts from mountains or trivia. Computers may be able to generate this information overload, but they cannot sort it without some form of human intelligence. Back in the last century, when mathematicians still did most of the calculating, one theory of probability suggested that an infinite number of monkeys bashing away at a similar quota of typewriters would eventually create the script of a Shakespeare play. This is, of course, a theory that cannot be proved this side of the end of the universe, but it has been much debated and modified over the years, as well as being introduced into popular culture. In this century, several attempts have been made to simulate the task using computers as virtual monkeys, reproducing random sequences of

letters to produce patterns that conform to the bard’s verses. However, despite the awesome potential of computing power, five trillion attempts have failed to create even one line accurately. One attempt using real monkeys produced five pages of text, mainly composed of the letter S, but failed to type anything close to a word of English, broke the computer and used the keyboard as a lavatory. I’m sure I’ve received an email from one of those primates, or at least one of his relations, at some time. The point being that, rather like the monkeys, people tend to bash away at the keys as if they were skilled typists, regardless of what is being spewed out and dispatched. With automatic word prompts modern processors to anticipate the meaning of a message even before it’s completed. Does anyone read what they have written anymore? Those of us with experience in the print industry know to get another pair of eyes to check anything we have written, and not rely solely on a spell checker which can’t check sense. As a journalist, I was trained to re-read anything I had composed and imagine it being studied by a third party on the basis that I might know what I was talking about, but somebody else might not. Even after that I had a sub-editor who did nothing but scrutinise every word without the prejudice of familiarity. Miscommunication is not new to the digital age; history is strewn with misunderstandings. Wars have been fought over less, and famously the Light Brigade was sent galloping in the wrong direction by a hasty note. But the immediacy of modern communication, its impatience and the lack of supervision, makes the possibilities of error far more likely. Which is why I raise the theory of the monkeys who don’t care what they are writing, alongside those who don’t actually notice the content. The latter is, of course, the very relevance of this subject to those of us working in print on demand and increasingly bombarded by badly composed, barely thought through requests which are often cancelled by a further message or phone call asking to ignore the previous one. Given that all print jobs these days are inevitably urgent, how are you expected to react? Act upon the first message or await confirmation from the second or third? In that case, nothing will ever get done as you will have to put everything on hold until you are sure it is correct. There does seem to be an assumption amongst the general customer base that mind reading is a required qualification, not just for a printer, but probably anyone working in a service industry. The more people rely on machines to do their composing and thinking for them, the less they will work out for themselves. And despite the fact that we have such a sophisticated communication network, the volume alone means the generation of vast amounts of complete garbage is an inevitable by-product. What is true of words is even more so of digital images as people can press a shutter on a mobile phone quicker than they can text and with even less thought of composition. That’s not to dismiss the ubiquitous phone camera. It used to be certain that anything taken on older models was most likely to be useless for print, but the improved lens, sensor and processor have made it a potential practical, portable device. But the emphasis is on the word potential. Without intelligent human control over its settings, the phone will capture exactly what it wants regardless of what the user intends. That may look half reasonable on a small, high resolution backlit screen, but printed out on paper will look like so much digital soup. So we have an almost infinite number of human apes, empowered by
vivid-online.com
the new technology, generating an equally endless tsunami of pictures charting every second of current existence, regardless of relevance, quality or consequence when they are flashed around the globe. Maybe once in a million, they will come up with a gem of an image, but those are the probabilities, and the odds are that it will have been created more by chance than design. Nor is it limited to the mobile phone user. So many users have purchased a quite capable digital camera now they are available at very reasonable prices. Over the years writing this column I have regularly reviewed the evolution of digital photography from its humble single megapixel origins to the multi-megapixels of today. But while the performance of the camera has improved, what hasn’t always kept pace is the capabilities of the individual user. I do have some sympathy because even now after fifteen years with digital, I still sometimes have to scratch my head and resort to the manual or an online tutorial to work out which particular button I need to push to select an option. Modern DSLRs are extremely complex, as, like many present devices, so many functions are crammed into them by the manufacturers - dictated by marketing as much as practical use - controls can be confusing. It was so much simpler in the days of film when the control dials on my old 35mm barely moved from one week to the next. But then with film, with a maximum of only 36 images immediately available, you had to make things count. That meant being sure they were in focus, exposed correctly, and framed properly as there was limited post editing possibility in the darkroom. Now I can shoot hundreds or even thousands of snaps without changing a card or even a battery, but I still try and retain the discipline learnt from film, knowing that scores of similar images will take hours to sort through on the computer. I’m sure we will all have had the experience of the customer at the counter scrolling through a memory card trying to decide which is the best picture of a pet dog. Almost inevitably it’s a matter of picking, not the best, but the least worst! I’m not sure which is worse, a customer with a phone camera who doesn’t know what they are doing, or one with a half decent camera who thinks they do. Probably the latter. Either way, it’s no use complaining about them, that’s just the way the customer base has evolved these days, it’s the one we have to work with, faults and all. So when they come in waving their memory stick at you don’t expect to open the word document and discover a Shakespeare Sonnet. It’s more likely to be the digital equivalent of a monkey’s lunch. Incidentally, if you want to rub shoulders with lots of customers with cameras, there’s still time to get your free trade pass to the Photography Show, at the NEC, March 17th to 20th. Well worth a visit to catch a good look at current camera culture, and a lot more. Registration closes March 14th. www.photographyshow.com/registration

Sign & Digital launches online information initiative
The Sign & Digital UK team at Faversham House has announced the launch of ‘Sign & Digital Explains’, an area on the show website which hosts downloadable practical articles on topics of interest to visitors from across the sign and display sectors. www.signuk.com/sign-digital-explains
The first two articles to be made available cover “Dye Sublimation & Heat Transfer Printing: From start-up to specialisation” and “A guide to wide format digital textile printing” and set the standard for a series of scheduled reports and news throughout the year. In the run up to the show ‘Sign & Digital Explains’ will also look at ‘Getting into wide format’, ‘Wall Décor’ and ‘Vehicle Wrapping’. Rudi Blackett, event director, said “As the leading event for the sign and display sectors, we have access to a wide range of experts and leading companies whose knowledge and expertise will help visitors grow their businesses. The aim of this new initiative is to give our visitor audience a year round opportunity to find out about potential new revenue streams and development areas for their businesses.” The articles, both in-depth comment and some shorter blogs that we produce ahead of the show, will be translated into seminars, debates and panel sessions at the 2018 show. Live demonstration areas will also offer the chance to see these developing technologies in action.” For our visitors from the creative industries there is also a series of inspiring blogs with some great tips and ideas to help them stay at the top of their game. Again, a visit to the show in April will allow them to see this creativity brought to life.” Sign & Digital UK is free to attend for visitors. SHOW PREVIEW
THE PRINT SHOW 2018 Make a note of 18-20 September at the NEC, Birmingham.
[S]
hortly after announcing its move back to the NEC in Birmingham for 2018, organisers of The Print Show have revealed “significant” early interest in the event, with a number of companies joining HP in signing up to exhibit. The Print Show 2018 will take place from September 18th to 20th at the NEC, the site of the inaugural event back in 2015, as well as the 2016 show. This year, The Print Show was staged at the International Centre in Telford and attracted praise from all quarters. Such was the success of this year’s event that HP, which was exhibiting for the first time, opted to sign up for The Print Show 2018, while the 2017 event was still in progress. One of the leading names set to return to The Print Show in 2018 is Signmaster Systems, which provides a range of print solutions from some of the biggest brands in the industry to the market. Speaking about the decision, director Lucy Ratcliffe explains: “We are exhibiting simply because we believe 2018 is going to be a great year, we have new courses, new products and a brand new website all to come. “I think the show is building and building, year-on-year; the time of year is great and it is something I believe we will be a part of for years to come.” Among the other companies that have already signed up to exhibit in 2018 is Vivid Laminating Technologies, an ever-present at The Print Show since its launch in 2015. The finishing specialist had a successful time
at this year’s event, showcasing a number of technologies on its stand, including its new Matrix Omni-Flow feeder. The device has the ability to laminate and foil up to 1,000 sheets unattended and, according to Vivid, can be set up five times faster than traditional offset feeders and offers long-sheet feeding. Also attending in 2018 is Ribbon Writer, which, as its name may suggest, can supply products capable of printing onto ribbons. Based in Bromsgrove near Birmingham, the
company is the sole distributer of Ribbon Writers and their consumables. In addition, Jenton Group will look to capitalise on an increase on the number of print companies moving into the packaging market by showcasing products on its stand at The Print Show 2018. Jenton Group specialises in packaging, UV and converting technology, and plans to demonstrate various kit at the show next year. Meanwhile, Intec Printing Solutions also looks set to feature at The Print Show 2018 after managing director Ian Melville praised the company’s performance at the event this year. Intec is another long-term supporter of the show and after attracting a high level of interest in its new ColorFlare CF700 and ColorCut FB600 products in October, is likely to appear at the event again in 2018. “The Print Show was larger than we expected; there were lots of exhibitors,” Melville says, adding: “It seems that The Print Show is now recognised as the annual UK print event to attend. The Print Show was a great place to meet the industry all under one roof. “Intec was able to use the Print Show as a platform to announce and launch new products. We took some orders on the stand; this is always a positive.” www.theprintshow.com

SHOW REVIEW
Third InPrint in Germany The exhibition at the Munich Trade Fair Centre attracted some 3,000 high-profile industry professionals, including inventors, integrators, printing specialists and professionals.
[A]
comprehensive conference programme provided insight into the latest developments and market potential of this emerging industry sector. In an official awards ceremony, prizes for innovative product developments and outstanding partnerships were awarded to four exhibiting companies. The organisers, as well as the large majority of the 153 exhibitors, were highly satisfied with the outcome of the show. “With its specialist community coming together to drive emerging markets for innovative print technologies, InPrint has now firmly established itself as the seminal event for print applications in industrial production. While the exhibition is an important platform for the exchange of ideas and innovative thinking, this time a large number of concrete solutions have been demonstrated by exhibitors on their impressive stands. What we can see as a result of this year’s show, is that InPrint is clearly evolving from a developmental networking event into a networking and trade exhibition, with increasing sales activity on the show floor”, explains Nicola Hamann, Managing Director at the organisers, Mack Brooks Exhibitions. At InPrint 2017 in Munich, a total of 153 exhibitors from 19 countries showcased the latest technology in speciality, screen, digital and inkjet printing for printing on metal, plastics, textiles, glass, ceramics, wood and other surfaces. The applications demonstrated at the exhibition are designed to be integrated into production lines and thus allow mass customisation of a wide variety of industrial goods. “While individualisation of many products and materials was previously mainly possible for small individual batches or on a made-toorder basis, innovative printing applications now enable long-term mass customisation within the industrial production process. Many manufacturing sectors see huge market potential in these printing applications, as they allow companies to enhance their value chains and gain competitive advantage,” says Frazer Chesterman, Co-Founder of InPrint. The variety of industry sectors represented by visitors to InPrint 2017 ranged from the automotive industry, interior design, fashion, electronics production and white goods
to toys, sports, pharmaceuticals, food and drinks, ceramics and many more. The list of visitors at InPrint 2017 included delegates from renowned brands such as adidas, Audi, Boehringer Ingelheim, Continental, Daimler, EVONIK, Fischersports, LEGO System, Marc Cain, Mercedes-Benz, Nestlé, Procter & Gamble Manufacturing, Ravensburger Spieleverlag, Rodenstock, Swarovski, Swatch Group and uvex sports group. A total of 2,951 visitors from 63 countries went to Munich to discover the latest equipment, to exchange expertise or find business partners for developing marketready solutions. In addition to the highly specialised visitors from the industrial print community, InPrint attracted 1,834 visitors from productronica, the world’s leading trade fair for electronics development and production, which was, once again, co-located with this year’s InPrint. An initial analysis of the exhibition survey shows that half of the InPrint visitors came from outside Germany. Top visitor countries besides Germany were Italy, Great Britain, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, The Netherlands, France, Poland and Russia. While 60% of visitors were printing specialists, a third of visitors were from different sectors of the manufacturing industry and some 7% came from the packaging sector. According to the visitor survey, a great majority of all visitors to the show came from Executive Management, work in Research & Development, or are marketing professionals or production specialists. Visitors mainly operate in the digital
printing sector (38%), in inkjet (26%), screen printing (20%) or speciality printing (9%). The main areas of interest of all visitors to the show were machinery and printing systems, inks, fluids and chemicals, print heads, screens and other special parts, materials and substrates and hardware and software as well as integrated and customised parts. In addition to the activities on the exhibition stands, a supporting programme in two conference theatres within the exhibition hall offered visitors valuable insight into prevailing trends and the latest developments in functional, decorative and packaging printing. The sessions included keynote speeches and expert talks as well as a podium discussion and were well received by the attendees. The InPrint 2017 Innovation Awards, sponsored by Ricoh, acknowledged innovative products and partnerships between companies driving advancement in industrial printing and manufacturing. On the first exhibition day, InPrint Co-Founder Marcus Timson and Graham Kennedy, Head of Commercial Ink Jet Business at Ricoh, handed the prestigious prizes over to four winning companies. Winners in the category ‘Innovative partnerships’ were CEFLA, Italy, and Tonejet Ltd, UK. Prizes in the category ‘Extraordinary Products’ were awarded to Sioen Chemicals, Belgium, and Thallosjet, Italy. A special award acknowledged the lifetime achievement and outstanding contribution to the development of print technology made by InPrint ambassador Sophie Matthews-Paul. www.inprintshow.com

3,000 new trees planted at Heartwood Forest The Premier Paper Group teamed up with their customers, the Woodland Trust and TV’s Julia Bradbury to plant 3,000 trees at Heartwood Forest. It’s Thursday 27th November 2017, 9:30am and the temperature is just touching 3˚C; it’s the morning after an incredibly stormy night. For most people today is ‘business as usual’, but that’s not the case for 150 of Premier’s customers and guests as they journey from across the country to the jewel, that is Heartwood Forest, hidden in the Hertfordshire countryside. Located just north of St Albans, in the quaint and picturesque village of Sandridge lies Heartwood Forest; initially mixed farm land, Heartwood Forest was acquired by the Woodland Trust in 2008 and its vast 347 hectare (860 acre) estate is now home to pockets of existing ancient woodland and new plantations, combined with wild flower meadows and a serene community orchard. Arriving at this stunning Woodland Trust site, Premier’s guests were greeted with a choice of freshly brewed teas and coffees as well as hot sandwiches produced locally by Sandridge Stores , an excellent and friendly family run business who produce some of the finest pasties and soups you will ever taste. After breakfast introductory speeches were given by Premier Paper and TV’s Julia Bradbury before taking to the field with a shovel and a sapling for a special tree planting demonstration from Wilder Things’ Tim Kirwin.

Premier’s customers and their guests worked tirelessly alongside the Woodland Trust and Julia Bradbury to plant saplings of native trees such as cherry, hazel, oak and dog wood. The team of dedicated planters went above and beyond the Woodland Trust’s target of 2,000 trees to ensure 3,000 saplings in total were planted on the day. This planting day will be one of the last at Heartwood as the Woodland Trust’s planting project at the site comes to a close; Premier and their customers have come together to plant trees at Heartwood Forest for the last four years. As the trees mature the new woodland will provide not only a stunning landscape with obvious environmental benefits but also habitats to an array of wildlife; from buzzards to woodpeckers, foxes to deer and countless species of butterfly and other insects native to the area. Back at base, a lunch of homemade soup and pasties was being prepared signalling the end of a good morning’s work. Many of the guests were then treated to a guided walk through Heartwood Forest and all went away with Woodland Trust goody bags containing copies of Julia Bradbury’s latest book and DVD. Reflecting on the day, Hussein Ismail, marketing executive for the Premier Paper Group commented, “It’s been an excellent event, the weather has been on our side, perfect for planting trees although the flint filled ground proved to be challenging. Our tree planting days provide a great platform for our customers and their clients to showcase their dedication to the environment by actually coming out, planting trees and helping to make a real difference.” From its launch to beginning of 2017, Premier’s Carbon Capture programme has raised over £500,000 for the Woodland Trust. www.paper.co.uk To discover the latest news from the Woodland Trust visit www. woodlandtrust.org. MarketDirect’s customer engagement platform offers innovative features that ensure optimum productivity, including EFI SmartCampaign, a new HTML5 based cross-media design tool. Plus, with a new storyboards automated campaign creation feature, customers can build and visualise a campaign in a matter of minutes using simple drag-and-drop tools. Theme templates introduced with
Ricoh Process Director software combines core capabilities with optional add-on features to allow flexible control of critical communications output. It streamlines operations, improves process integrity, enhances operator productivity, reduces errors, and helps to lower costs. It is also the backbone software of Ricoh Automated Document Factory (ADF) solutions. The Pre-printed Forms Replacement feature makes white paper manufacturing a reality. PSPs can now print jobs on plain paper that previously required pre-printed forms. It dynamically redefines AFP and PDF files, allowing content that was printed on the pre-printed form to be added to the data in the print file. Tim Taylor, Head of Continuous Feed Marketing, Ricoh Europe, comments: “PSPs can now modify and eventually replace solutions that depend on inventories of pre-printed forms. For example, sheet fed applications running on pre-printed forms can be migrated easily to white paper on continuous feed, while maintaining production flexibility to produce short runs or reprints on sheet fed devices. Business logic within the workflow can dynamically select the most appropriate output method to help optimise device usage across the production floor. It can also help consolidate jobs into large print runs and reduce or eliminate inventories of pre-printed forms. Operator time and cost savings can be made too.” Another feature of ProcessDirector v3.6 is the ability to record the amount and type of ink used by a job printed on Ricoh Pro™ VC60000 and Ricoh Pro™ VC40000 high speed inkjet systems. It reports ink usage for each of the colours for every job. For any reprints, ink usage is added to the original number and stored in cumulative usage counters for each job. The User Interface has also been refreshed with the most common operator tasks added to the main page. It also includes new portlets that show system health, job status, and device status with easy to understand graphics. Taylor adds: “These updates are all about making the lives of PSPs easier. Streamlined production, a closer eye on ink usage and quick to assess figures all combine to make the production environment more efficient and effective.” www.ricoh.co.uk

OKI
Buy a box – grow your business You’ll be surprised by the opportunities says Rob Brown, Head of Graphic Arts & Industry Print, UK, Ireland & Nordics
[B]
usiness is challenging for many in the graphic arts sector. Customers are asking for shorter runs, quicker turnarounds and specialised processes — all chipping away at the bottom line. But suppose there was a way, for a relatively small investment, you could open up new opportunities, achieve a few quick wins and then establish new but sustainable revenue streams? The latest printers, from wide format through to light production, envelope printing and transfer media, address these challenges, offering businesses an excellent means of generating income quickly and driving a fast return on investment (ROI). But where do these opportunities lie? In a recent survey, Widthwise 2017, 43% said wide format profit margins were better than any other part of their business while 88% said that ten years from now they still expect to be in wide format printing. The potential for the transfer media printing market looks great also, with 70% of respondents to a recent FESPA global census saying they expected personalisation printing to increase. It’s not the printer specifications that are important here. Simply by using what’s in the box itself, you’ll be able to expand your range. If you are in the business of selling merchandise, for example, the latest white toner printers may be able to deliver enough free toner to print thousands of t-shirts. If you are a small sign company, the ability to create high-quality labels quickly and easily can help tap into new markets. In the large format print arena, there are now affordable entrylevel devices capable of generating high-quality indoor printing and
“Now graphics businesses can print in any colour, including white, on a range of media, simply and cost-effectively in-house”
Rob Brown, Head of Graphic Arts & Industry Print, UK, Ireland & Nordics
durable guaranteed long-life outdoor applications. The ability to enter into the outdoor sign market can be critically important in opening lucrative new market areas including retail signage, building hoarding and wraps and key growth areas like window graphics; exhibition display panels and vehicle signage and wraps. Of course, some businesses might be deterred from taking the plunge initially due to perceived high entry costs. But say they are selling banners at £30 each and they make a hardware finance
payment of £50 per week on their device, then they will only need to sell two banners a week to effectively pay for it. Transfer media printing can also be a lucrative area. This involves printing a high-resolution image on to quality transfer paper. The image on the transfer paper is then applied to the finished product or clothing using a heat press. Print shops no longer have to immerse themselves in set-up times and messiness of screen printing. Instead, hardware and ink costs are markedly lower than rival
direct-to-garment technology, take up less room and require no extra equipment for pre-treatment or drying. As a market leader in white toner digital printing, OKI plays a key role in this marketplace. Previously, printing in white was an expensive, time-consuming task often only handled by larger print houses. Now graphics businesses can print in any colour, including white, on a range of media, simply and cost-effectively in-house With a growth in demand for highly targeted, creative direct mail, OKI’s graphic arts solutions can create customised printed versions based on criteria such as geography, language and demographics, offering the flexibility to test promotions and produce pre- and post-print runs in an economic way. So, it’s not the box itself or ‘speeds and feeds’, that matters here, of course, it’s what comes out of the box; the opportunity to expand into new market areas and start generating incremental revenue streams. www.oki.com

Personalisation is alive and well
TheMagicTouch has reported that personalisation is indeed alive and kicking! During the Christmas period the 25 year old Dunstable based company recorded record sales across the board of all traditional transfer product applications but were astounded by the success of a selection of new applications. Earlier in the year the company perfected the image transfer process onto a new range of products that create great new non-textile personalisation opportunities. Using the “award winning” RST9.1 transfer paper full colour personalised designs and images were applied to a range of wooden stools, chairs and tables creating fantastic finishes to what is normally bland and uninteresting. The same RST transfer paper is suitable for the decoration of a vast range of non-textile products with rough surfaces including untreated wood, slate, cork, ceramics, plastics, MDF and lots more. However, the new personalised hip flask has surpassed all expectations. Printed using the latest in white-toner technology the personalised flasks have mass appeal and are confirmed perfect for both gift and corporate markets, especially when the minimum order is one and customers can request a printed sample for evaluation. Jim Nicol Managing Director explains, “TheMagicTouch process offers nine different transfer papers each with their own unique markets. Products such as personalised notebooks, diaries, cushions and mugs offer the perfect gift solution for many B2B markets”. The company look forward to introducing more innovation and creative ideas in 2018. For further information on the new RST9.1 or any of the other transfer applications contact sales@themagictouch.co.uk or visit www.themagictouch.co.uk
Fast Start Award for TMT Hip, Hip, Hooray — TheMagicTouch at Trophex 2018, the UK’s exhibition for the awards and recognition industry, hosted at the NEC Bir-mingham in January were awarded the accolade of “Best Image Trans-fer Product” for their latest image transfer innovation. Using the latest in white toner transfer technology the company have developed a new process to personalise Hip Flasks with full colour log-os and images. The traditional Hip Flask has for many years been popular within the traditional B2B markets with the personalisation part normally being taken care of with engraving or single colour pad printing both of which involve a set-up cost and not viable for full colour or photographic images and certainly not for individual designs. However, today the product is given a new lease of life and can be produced with full colour personalised images, logos and messages using a transfer that takes less than 2 minutes to complete is clean, easy and very durable with the cost per printed flask all-inclusive for £5 each plus VAT. Using the ProSeries Oki white-toner printers and the established CPM transfer paper full colour images and logos can be applied to almost any type PU/leatherette materials using a traditional heat transfer press. Jim Nicol, Managing Director, explained “The personalised flask and similar products decorated using this technology has been very well received by our customers and offers a great business opportunity across many markets including most outdoor sports, hen and stag events and of course the existing B2B market For further information on the new process or any of the other transfer applications contact sales@themagictouch.co.uk or visit www.themagictouch.co.uk

Graphicomm Digital wins International Design Award
Plymouth-based Graphicomm Digital has won the Office Award at the inaugural Antalis Interior Design Awards 2018 for its impressive display of artistic print in an extraordinary wrapping project. The highly anticipated awards ceremony, which took place in Paris at the Maison&Objet Exhibition, on Monday 22nd January, saw the de-sign, print and architectural community come together to celebrate creative design and reward the exceptional projects entered into the competition. The competition, which received a staggering 300-plus entries from across the world, was judged by a jury of seven industry experts who hand-picked the winners. Graphicomm Digital took home the top spot for the Office Award which made best use of Antalis’ pioneering Coala 2d Dynamic Polymeric Gloss White’s printing and wrapping capability. Described as a ‘meta-morphosis’, the unique wrapping job, which stood out to judges for its originality, saw an old shipping container be transformed to a stunning hillside art piece. Graphicomm Digital created a camouflage wrap using a number of high-resolution photographs of the surrounding landscape of the con-tainer, allowing it to be seamlessly integrated into the countryside sce-ne. This was finished with Coala 2D Matt Laminate over the top to pro-vide extra protection. John Hardaker, director at Graphicomm Digital, said: “We are absolute-ly thrilled to have been recognised for the creativeness of our work, especially in such a highly competitive category. We thoroughly en-joyed working on this creation and we look forward to taking on new design challenges this year.” Agnes Lafarge, jury member and Antalis’ Market Manager for Visual Communication, comments: “It was a unanimous decision amongst the judges for Graphicomm Digital to be our Office winner. The demon-strated ability to transform an industrial container into a work of art was truly inspiring. We at Antalis take great pride in seeing our products form part of such an impressive project that combines ingenuity and originality.” www.antalis.co.uk.

SOMETHING TO SHARE…? Furniture Magic
A funny magician accidentally turned his wife into a couch and his two kids into armchairs. He started to panic and thought to himself, “What on earth have I done?” He began to ponder, “How am I going to bring back my beloved family?” So, he thought for a while and decided a good idea was to take them to a hospital and see if the surgeon could operate and bring them back. He loaded them into his van and off he rushed to the local hospital. He walked up and down the hospital hall and after some serious surgery, he asks the doctor, “Doc, how are they?” The doctor replied, “Comfortable!”
Glass Half Full
A child psychologist had twin boys—one was an optimist; the other, a pessimist. Just to see what would happen, on Christmas Day he loaded the pessimist’s room with toys and games. In the optimist’s room, he dumped a pile of horse droppings. That night, the father found the pessimist surrounded by his gifts, crying. “What’s wrong?” the father asked. “I have a ton of game manuals to read… I need batteries… and my toys will all eventually get broken!” sobbed the pessimist. Passing the optimist’s room, the father found him dancing for joy around the pile of droppings. “Why are you so happy?” he asked. The optimist shouted, “There’s got to be a pony in here somewhere!”
Old Money
A 60 year old millionaire is getting married and throws a big wedding reception. His friends are quite jealous and in a quiet moment one of them asks him how did he land such a hot 23 year old beauty. “Simple,” grins the millionaire, “I lied about my age.” His friends are really amazed and ask him how much he said. “Well,” he replied, “I said I was 87!”
Educational Budget
Did you hear about the banker who was recently arrested for embezzling £100,000 to pay for his daughter’s university education? As the policeman, who also had a daughter in university, was leading him away in handcuffs, he said to the banker, “I have just one question for you. Where were you going to get the rest of the money?”
Sales Speak
A salesman walks into a shoe store and tries on a pair of shoes. “How do they feel?” asks the sales clerk. “Well they feel a bit tight,” replies the man. The assistant promptly bends down and has a look at the shoes and at the man’s feet. “Try pulling the tongue out,” the clerk says. “Well, theyth sthill feelth a bith tighth.”
Doctor, Doctor
The patient runs into his psychiatrist’s office and says, “Doc, I think I’m a tepee, no I think I’m a wigwam, no I think I’m a tepee, no I think I’m a wigwam, no I think I’m a tepee, no I think I’m a wigwam!” The psychiatrist looks at him and says, “Relax, you’re just too tents!”

The Real Meaning of Hotel slogans Old world charm: No bath Options galore: Nothing is included in the itinerary No extra fees: No extras Nominal fee: Outrageous charge Standard:Sub-standard Delux:Standard Superior: One free shower cap Cosy: Small All the amenities: Two free shower caps Plush:Top and bottom sheets
A Criminal Lawyer
“Excuse me,” a young fellow said to an older man, “I’ve just moved here and I wonder if this town has any criminal lawyers?” “Well,” replied the older man, “I have lived here all my life and all I can tell you is we are pretty sure we do, but no one has been able to prove it yet.”
Safe at Home
A husband comes in from the garage. His wife asks, “What’s wrong?” He replies, “I lost something. I thought I had put it somewhere safe in the garage.” “How many safe places are there in the garage?” she asks. “Clearly one more than I can remember.”
New Way to Play Shops
Two kids were deciding what game to play. One said, “Let’s play printers!” “Good idea,” said the other. “You be the printer who works in the shop, and I’ll be the customer that thinks he knows more.”
Never drink and drive
A man was well inebriated, but he got behind the wheel of his car anyway and began to drive home. Of course, he couldn’t exactly drive straight or stay below the speed limit. Two policemen pulled him over and demanded a sobriety test. They asked him to walk a straight line, and he failed. They began to take him with them, but suddenly they received a call on their walkie-talkies, asking them to go to another part of town. They asked the man to be patient while they called someone else to cover for them. But the man grew tired of waiting and, after a few minutes, drove home. He got in bed and said to his wife, who had been waiting for him, “If any policemen come looking for me, tell them I’m not home yet.” The wife agreed, somewhat confused and a little embarrassed. No sooner than her husband fell asleep did she hear a knock at the door. Sure enough, it was the two policemen. They asked about her husband, and she replied that he wasn’t home. Then they asked to check her garage. Puzzled, she agreed. She opened up the garage for them--and there sat the policemen’s squad car, lights still flashing.
A Lesson from Consultants
Last week, we took some friends to a restaurant, ‘Must Wine Bar’’ in Manchester, and I noticed that the waitress who took our order carried a spoon in her shirt pocket. It seemed a little strange. When the other waiter brought our water and utensils, I observed that he also had a spoon in his shirt pocket. Then I looked around and saw that all the staff had spoons in their pockets. When the waiter came back to serve our meal I enquired, ‘Why thespoon?’ ‘Well, ‘he explained,’ the restaurant’s owner hired a consulting firm to revamp all of our processes. After several months of analysis, they concluded that the spoon was the most frequently dropped utensil. It represents a drop frequency of approximately three spoons per table per hour. If our personnel are better prepared, we can reduce the number of trips back to the kitchen and save 15 man-hours per shift.’ As luck would have it, I dropped my spoon and he replaced it with his spare. ‘I’ll get another spoon next time I go to the kitchen instead of making an extra trip to get it right now.’ I was impressed. I also noticed that there was a string hanging out of the waiter’s fly. Looking around, I saw that all of the waiters had the same string hanging from their flies. So, before he walked off, I asked the waiter, ‘Excuse me, but can you tell me why you have that string right there?’ “Oh, certainly!’ Then he lowered his voice. ‘Not everyone is so observant. That consulting firm I mentioned also learned that we can save time in the toilet. By tying this string to the tip of our you-know-what, we can pull it out without touching it and eliminate the need to wash our hands, shortening the time spent in the restroom by 76.39%. I asked quietly, ‘After you get it out, how do you put it back?’ ‘Well,’ he whispered, ‘I don’t know about the others, but I use the spoon.’

NHS Cuts
A male patient was lying in bed in the hospital with an oxygen mask over his mouth and nose and still heavily sedated from a four hour operation. A young nurse appeared to sponge his hands and feet. “Nurse”, he mumbled from behind the mask, “Are my testicles black?” Embarrassed, the young nurse replied, “I don’t know, I’m only here to wash your hands and feet.” He struggles again to ask, “Nurse, Are my testicles black?” Finally, she pulled back the covers, raised his night gown, held his penis in one hand and his testicles in her other and took a close look and said, “I can’t see anything wrong with them!” The man pulled off his oxygen mask and said very slowly, “That was very nice but listen very, very closely - are... my... test... results... back?”
Hard Sun
A Russian, an American, and a blonde were talking one day. The Russian said, ‘We were the first in space!’ The American said, ‘We were the first on the moon!’ The blonde said, ‘So what, we’re going to be the first on the sun!’ The Russian and the American looked at each other and shook their heads. ‘You can’t land on the sun, you idiot! You’ll burn up!’ said the Russian. To which the blonde replied, ‘We’re not stupid, you know. We’re going at night!’
A man A police in a cinema officer said notices what to alooks motorist, like a “What cat sitting werenext youtodoing? him.
The birds and the bees
“Dad, where did I come from?” asks this 10 year old. The father was shocked that a 10 year old would be asking a question like that. He was hoping to wait a few more years before he would have to explain the facts of life, but he figured it was better a few years early than a few days too late, so, for the next two hours he explained every thing to his son. When he got finished, he asked his son what prompted his question to which his son replied, “I was talking to the new kid across the street and he said he came from Tunbridge Wells, so I was just wondering where I came from.”
Marital Bliss
A woman accompanied her husband to the doctor’s surgery. After his check up, the doctor called the wife into his office alone. He said, ‘Your husband is suffering from a very severe stress disorder. If you don’t do the following, your husband will surely die.’ ‘Each morning, fix him a healthy breakfast. Be pleasant at all times. For lunch make him a nutritious meal. For dinner prepare an especially nice meal for him. Don’t burden him with chores. Don’t discuss your problems with him; it will only make his stress worse. No nagging. And most importantly, make love with your husband several times a week. If you can do this for the next 10 months to a year, I think your husband will regain his health completely.’ On the way home, the husband asked his wife. ‘What did the doctor say?’ ‘He said you’re going to die,’ she replied.
“Your car was zigzagging “Are you a cat?” like crazy!”. The driver replied, asked the man, surprised. “I’m learning to drive.”
Overnight Train
A man and a woman who have never met before find themselves in the same sleeping carriage of a train. After the initial embarrassment, they both manage to get to sleep; the woman on the top bunk, the man on the lower. In the middle of the night the woman leans over and says, “I’m sorry to bother you, but I’m awfully cold and I was wondering if you could possibly pass me another blanket.” The man leans out and with a glint in his eye said “I’ve got a better idea ... let’s pretend we’re married.” “Why not,” giggles the woman. “Good,” he replies. “Get your own blanket.”
Killer Jigsaw Puzzle
A little silver-haired lady calls her neighbour and says: “Please come over here and help me. I have a killer jigsaw puzzle, and I can’t figure out how to get started.” Her neighbour asks, “What is it supposed to be when it’s finished?” The little silver haired lady says, “According to the picture on the box, it’s a chicken.” Her neighbour decides to go over and help with the puzzle. She lets him in and shows him where she has the puzzle spread all over the table. He studies the pieces for a moment, then looks at the box, then turns to her and says: “First of all, no matter what we do, we’re not going to be able to assemble these pieces into anything resembling a chicken.” He takes her hand and says, “Secondly, I want you to relax. Let’s

have a nice cup of tea, and then,” he said with a deep sigh... “Let’s put all the Corn Flakes back in the box.”
Brain over brawn
Little Johnny was at football practice one day and the coach said “Who here thinks they can jump higher than the goal posts” Immediately little Johnny said, “Ooh me sir me” The coach then said, “But Johnny you are the worst in the team!” Then Johnny said, “I know, but goalposts can’t jump!”
Happy Valentines
What did the Valentine’s Day card say to the stamp? Stick with me and you’ll go places What do farmers give their wives on Valentine’s Day? Hogs and kisses! What did the painter say to her boyfriend? “I love you with all my art!” What do single people call Valentine’s Day? Happy Independence Day Why did the pig give his girlfriend a box of sweets? It was Valenswine’s Day! Do skunks celebrate Valentine’s Day? Sure, they’re very scentimental!
Top Dog
Two women, who are dog owners, are arguing which dog is smarter. First woman: “My dog is so smart. Every morning he waits for the paperboy to come around and then he takes a newspaper and brings it to me.” Second woman: “you’re lucky.” First one: “How?” Second one: “My dog always reads it first.”
“Oh,The yes,”cat said replied, the driver. “Well, “It’s anI liked onlinethe course.” book.”
