Fife Print & Sign Centre Adds PUR Binding Fife Print & Sign Centre, Burntisland, has invested in its first PUR binding system — a DigiBook 150 — purchased from Morgana Systems. Commenting on the reasons for the purchase, Natalie Magee, Managing Director of Fife Print & Sign Centre, said: “Orders involving perfect binding have been increasing year on year. We now have a sufficient volume of work to justify the investment for our own machine, thus saving on the cost of outwork whilst gaining control. “We have a long and trusted relationship with Morgana, and we knew that they produced a range of PUR binders. We didn’t need to look elsewhere. The DigiBook 150 was within our budget and provides the productivity that we need. “The entry level version of the DigiBook is just fine for the quantities we need to produce right now, but if that increases significantly in the future we will look to trade this model back for a faster machine.” PUR is the strongest, most flexible binding adhesive available and offers several additional advantages over other binding adhesives. When inks, coatings or digital print toners are present in the spine area these can compromise the strength of typical hot-melt perfect binding. PUR is resistant to this and will form a superstrong bond with all weights and finishes of paper stocks. In addition PUR works well with synthetic and recycled-content stock.

The DigiBook 150 is an entry level PUR binder (perfect binding machine) and is ideally suited to traditional and digital printers who require short runs of PUR perfect bound books to a professional standard. The DigiBook 150 is equipped with a patented closed gluing system where the spine and side gluing is applied by a slot applicator for the utmost binding quality and accuracy, and is capable of binding up to 150 books per hour.

Ray Hillhouse, vice-president offline business at Morgana, commenting on this latest DigiBook binder order said: “Our friends at Fife Print & Sign Centre have been users of Morgana equipment for some time, and it is a delight to see them continually expanding their product offering. Our comprehensive DigiBook range of PUR equipment has a machine to suit almost any perfect binding requirement.” www.morgana.co.uk

Clays’ Bindery Evolution with Petratto Cordoba Clays, a UK book printer, has chosen a Petratto Cordoba heavy duty folder gluer from Intelligent Finishing Systems to support its bindery evolution. The 200-year-old company was recently bought by Italian firm Elcograf for £23.8m and it wanted to introduce two-up book production to make operations more cost effective, efficient and streamlined. It prints around 150m books a year and also offers a distribution service. Paul Bullen, general manager, explains: “We needed a system that could fold and glue two-up. We were outsourcing the work but our suppliers could only produce one-up. Two-up is much more efficient and we wanted to start completing more jobs that way.” The operation first considered the Petratto Cordoba in 2013 but for a number of operational reasons the project was put on hold and picked up again 12 months ago. The Cordoba range uses a matrix system to crease substrates prior to folding. It incorporates a traditional folding section with a knife and matrix creasing unit. The folder has a modified roller configuration and fold plate angle, which eliminates cracking and curls when folding heavy stocks. It can crease a wide range of substrates from 80gsm to 600 gsm, including heavy boards or plastics, lamination, cross grain and digital print, and fold from 140gsm to 600gsm.

From left: Paul Bullen, general manager Clays with Diego Casagrande, Sales & Product Manager Petratto

Bullen continues “We liked the fact that it easily manages short runs too — from 100 to 100,000. The best thing about it is its fast change over. Other systems glue and plough fold and that can take up to an hour to change jobs on. This is much faster.” www.ifsl.uk.com paul.bullen@clays.co.uk

Surrey-based printers, 4-Print, recently invested in two Vivid print finishing systems to complement their new digital press. Established in 1982, 4-Print, with a long-standing reputation for high quality litho work and outstanding customer service, decided to expand into the growing digital market. Having invested in a state of the art digital press it immediately became apparent that the next day laminating service and cylinder cutting and creasing, currently used for litho, just wouldn’t be adequate for the faster production expectations of a digital print buyer. A faster and more efficient alternative needed to be sourced. Following significant research 4-Print selected Vivid Laminating Technologies to supply two systems: A Matrix 530 Duplex Laminator with Omniflow deep pile feeder to cope with banner sheets of 700mm and a Magnum MC-35A for creasing and perforating. Nigel Fountain, Managing Director of 4-Print commented “Whilst researching a suitable supplier Vivid was a name that kept coming up, they seemed to be well-respected with positive feedback from current users. Certainly, in our dealings with them I can say that they are a pleasure to deal with. The installation was seamless with Vivid technicians on hand for questions in the early days. It is a joy to work with Sophie Evans who has the answer to any question and a huge passion for the products.” When asked what specifically they liked about the Vivid systems Nigel added “We were attracted to both pieces of equipment because of the fast set-up times and ease of use. Both items made an instant impact on production. Same day laminating enabled us to meet deadlines never achievable before. The perforating and creasing for short run work perfectly and complemented our existing set up. Our short run production has gone up significantly, everything from business cards to folders and multi-page brochures.” www.vivid-online.com

Rotherham Printer: Business of the Year Rotherham-based print manufacturer, Bluetree Group has been awarded Large Business of the Year 2018 as part of the Sheffield Business Awards. After a recent £3.25 million investment and creating over 60 new local jobs in the last year, Bluetree Group is proud to share their successful win as Large Business of the Year at the Sheffield Business Awards. James Kinsella, eCommerce Director of Bluetree Group said; “Bluetree are thrilled to be recognised for our achievements in the region and the award is testament to the hard work that everyone in the team has put in. Over the last three years, the business has grown significantly and we’ve invested over £3m into our production facilities, enabling us to create 60 new jobs.” In the last five years alone, Bluetree Group has invested more than £20 million into their South Yorkshire print production facility, ensuring their place at the forefront of print industry innovation. As a direct result, Bluetree has seen over 30% increase in sales since its inception and has generated over 200 jobs in just two years.

Mark Young, Head of Route 1 Print, puts the group’s success down to a company-wide drive to find the best solution for its customers, from innovative production methods to a responsive client services team; “Our customers are at the heart of everything we do here. We’re constantly working to ensure that we have the best people, equipment and processes in place, which allows us to deliver an exceptional service. Our product offering is shaped by our clients’ needs, be it new stock choices or entirely new products like our new unfinished sheet range. We want our customers to know that they can come to us for all their print needs.” The Sheffield Business Awards provides an

opportunity for businesses to promote their achievements during the year, raise their profile and, ultimately, gain the recognition they deserve. Every year, businesses of all sizes and sectors are considered and now, in its 17th year, the prestigious event is firmly established as the leading awards ceremony for Sheffield businesses. This year’s ceremony was held in the International Hall at Ponds Forge, Sheffield. Bluetree Group is a market leader in online print, made up of two customer facing brands; instantprint and Route 1 Print. Bluetree has a customer centric approach, segmenting the print market into trade customers who are serviced via Route 1 Print and end users who are serviced by instantprint. Since their inception in 2009, Bluetree has gone from strength to strength, achieving many accolades. These include honours in the European Business Awards and two consecutive features in the annual London Stock Exchange Group’s 1000 Companies to Inspire Britain. www.bluetreegroup.co.uk www.route1print.co.uk

Intec introduce two new Colorflare models Unveiled at The Print Show UK and Print ’18 USA, the ColorFlare CF350 and CF750 join the CF1200 flagship model, creating a highly creative print finishing range – which will be shipping in volume from this month! The ColoFlares are compact dual laminator and foil flaring solutions designed to offer commercial printers, marketers and designers in-house decorative effects. Primarily designed for short run, ondemand digital applications as well as lamination for traditional litho output, the ColorFlares open up new opportunities for the production of greetings cards, vouchers, security print, packaging, book jackets and labels etc. Intec’s CF350 enters the market at an incredibly competitive price, offering the flexibility of laminating and foiling and with its softer feed rollers, great for foiling trickier items such as envelopes without any detrimental effects from the pressure required to achieve a fantastic foil finish. Emulating its bigger brother, the CF750 offers three different set up options; as a desktop solution, with a stand and with the new dual feed roller assembly so lamination and foil rolls can be loaded together for exact material alignment and quicker production set. The two new additions to the range also help by giving users access to the widest range of media at the best possible prices compared to typical desktop entry level or mid-range foiling or laminating solutions that employ one or two inch core rolls of foil or laminate, that are more expensive and harder to source. Intec’s ColorFlare range, is unique as it utilises an industry standard

three inch core for both laminate and foils across its entire range making it easier and more cost effective for users to stock just one range of laminates and foils. Coupled with the ColorSplash colour digital printer, the ColorFlare can foil flare directly onto printed toner and also onto lamination films creating extra special effects without expensive set up charges. Not limiting themselves to promoting this with the ColorSplash units only, Intec offers the ColorFlare to anyone who has a digital printer from any one of today’s major printer manufacturers. “We were very encouraged by the incredible sales received from the launch of the flagship CF1200 and after extensive market research, discovered that there was a gap in the market for entry level solutions that utilised the more cost effective three inch core materials in the market, so we developed the smaller and more robust ColorFlare units” states Ian Melville, managing director at Intec Printing Solutions. “And with the production enhancing features such as the dual feed assembly, unique to Intec ColorFlares, we are offering some key advantages to their laminating and foiling facilities.” ColorFlare is all about adding decorative effects to printed sheets — and adding extra value to print. By combining a ColorFlare with ColorSplash digital printer the results are limitless! www.intecprinters.com

InkTec launch three new JETRIX printers The New Year looks bright for InkTec as they launch not one, but three new JETRIX printers. These newcomers will add to their already extensive range of roll-to-roll LED-UV flatbed printers. Building on all the tried and tested technology of the popular KX6 and KX7, InkTec are releasing the eight-channel LXi6 and LXi7 LED-UV flatbed printers. These high performance printers have been designed and developed to deliver high efficiency and will come equipped with even more advanced systems than their previous counterparts including a smarter GUI. The stronger vacuum combined with functional and vibrant ink make them extremely easy and convenient to use. The smaller LXi6 takes media up to 2.5 x 1.28m and the LXi7 extends the media size up to 2.5 x 3.06m with both offering an optional enhanced roll-to-roll option. Capable of top speeds of 78sqm/hr with a maximum resolution of 1,080 dpi and with prices at circa £100k and £130k respectively; both are being pitched as the perfect mid-range LED-UV flatbed printer for print providers looking to enter the wideformat or upgrade current equipment. Their launch will be closely followed by the 1.9m wide LXiR190. This machine builds on the success of the larger LXiR320, but as its name suggests is a narrower version. InkTec has consciously taken the decision

to adopt this more unusual width so that the printer can easily use two 914mm rolls at once, which will result in a doubling in the production speed of jobs. It prints at a maximum resolution of 720 x 1,440 dpi and up to speeds of 45sqm/ hr, which means the printer will be perfect for many roll based applications including banners, graphics, wall coverings and textiles. The JETRIX LXiR190 is also deliberately economically priced at around £45k to again encourage demand from solvent printers wanting to move to UV. Ben Woodruff, Head of JETRIX Sales says: “These newest machines encompass everything that is great about the introduction of LED technology. They are more environmentally friendly, more efficient to run, eliminate the need for frequent lamp replacement and more importantly create cost savings. They will be officially launched at Sign & Digital UK, however while these printers do see InkTec venturing into new areas, initial conversations have been extremely positive. We are therefore predicting that with the introduction of these new machines, that 2019 will see a lot more JETRIX printers in the UK.” The printers will be officially launched at Sign and Digital UK, NEC Birmingham. www.inktec-europe.com

New Ricoh ProTM VC70000 The Ricoh Pro VC70000 is the latest addition to Ricoh’s continuous feed family. It joins the Ricoh Pro™ VC60000, Ricoh Pro™ VC40000, Ricoh Pro™ VC20000, Ricoh Pro™ V20000 and InfoPrint 5000 in their high speed production inkjet portfolio developed to support operations in their conversion from offset to digital production. The Pro VC70000 prints at speeds up to 150 metres per minute, producing nearly 12,000 duplex B2 sheets per hour. It is capable of running multiple millions of impressions per month which is perfect for clients who have high peak volumes in a month or seasonally. The latest state of the art piezo drop on demand print heads print at a resolution up to 1200x1200 dpi on uncoated, offset coated, inkjet treated or inkjet coated papers. They run the new Ricohdeveloped inks that rival the output of offset inks with their media versatility and compatibility with gloss, silk and matt coated stocks. The Pro VC70000 features multiple elements that contribute to its exceptional performance including the new entrance and exit modules and a unique dryer unit. Unique Dryer Unit Supports Broad Applications — The dryer unit, patent pending, supports a wide range of media and high coverage applications in the commercial market. The objective of the new dryer is to produce flat sheets on all media but in particular with offset

coated media. New external and internal dryer units — The small footprint module comprises a heat drum with small heat rollers (sHR) that support up to 120mpm printing on offset coated papers ranging from 40gsm to 250gsm and up to 150 m/m from 64gsm to 157gsm. The dryer can be operated through the Ricoh Digital Front End (DFE) and each of the front and rear engines (Printer 1 and Printer 2) have their own settings. Predefined dryer temperature settings can be preset and stored. Eliminating Cockling — With its unique design the dryer significantly reduces cockling on all media. Cockling occurs when paper becomes distorted by ripples or wrinkles in areas of high ink coverage. The Pro VC70000 can eliminate cockling on lighter weight coated papers with a two-stage correction process: 1 The paper is evenly dried on the large heat drum. 2 The dryers in the two engines use the small heat rollers to dry and condition the paper.

They are tuned to ensure the correct drying on side one and side two with the aim of eliminating cockling of the paper. This is achieved by new dryer technologies that include the: 1 Reduction in the diameter of the heat roller to stretch any paper wrinkles. 2 Removal of cockling by heating at wrapping position. 3 Prevention of re-cockling during the heating process with repeated “Wrapping on small Heat Roller and Release”. 4 Increased heating capacity before the first contact with the printed face. Both the Pro VC70000 and the Pro VC60000 run newly developed inks and the Pro VC70000’s dryer supports a faster print speed with greater ink coverage. It also allows the use of higher ink limits. The system boasts a typically lower running cost with lesser coverage applications and is highly efficient at switching jobs through its ability to handle dynamic variable data. www.ricoh-europe.com

Heidelberg expands eShop consumables orders Heidelberg continues to enjoy growth in the consumables market and to enhance conversion to its eShop portal. New and potential customers are being sent welcome packs which include instructions on how easy it is to buy online, consumables product information and a special introductory offer. Andrew Hall, head of consumables for Heidelberg UK, says, “We already have a number of customers using eShop. About 30% of our total consumable orders and sales are generated using this online facility. We believe that more existing and new customers would benefit from this ordering method because it offers 24/7 access and personalised shopping lists . We would like to have 40% of orders being placed through the eShop by the end of 2019 and more than half by 2020 and that is achievable. Not only is it easy to use, but the consumables purchased earn loyalty points which can be used to pay towards service work, training requirements, demonstrator visits, service contracts or ISO 12647-2 colour certification. “Heidelberg has had enormous success in the consumables area which includes plates, inks, coatings, press chemistry, press supplies, blankets, proofing and rollers. In part that is down to the way Heidelberg trials and tests every product it supplies to ensure it performs effectively and the ability to offer finance bundle deal options on equipment or service contracts has also proved popular. “Equally it is the expert advice the consumables team and technical manager Claire Ashby can offer that gives us a stand out advantage. For instance, recently some LED-UV and LE-UV photo initiators were banned but Heidelberg will guide its customers to EuPIA compliant alternatives.

Knowing that Heidelberg is monitoring legislation as well as product developments means peace of mind. We have seen substantial growth in our ink sales over the last 12 months, both conventional and the various UV options.” www.heidelberg.co.uk

New DERPROSA Sandy Original Film On rare occasions, a company launches a product on the market making a substantial difference with existing products and leading to new sensations. DERPROSA ™ launches SANDY ORIGINAL, a new matte film, granular to the touch, unique in its kind. DERPROSA™ SANDY ORIGINAL is an innovative haptic matt film that evokes pleasant feelings of homogeneous roughness to the touch, providing a perfect contrast with the already widely acclaimed DLSOFT TOUCH®. Both products produce a unique and unmistakable feeling, inciting consumers to make purchases or choose a product to the detriment of any other non-laminated or traditionally-finished product. Many Neuromarketing studies have demonstrated the direct and positive connection between the choice of new film textures and the income statement of brands requiring films such as SANDY or DLSOFT TOUCH® in packaging lamination processes. DERPROSA™ SANDY ORIGINAL is applied just as any other conventional lamination film used in the graphic arts and may be used in any project seeking to achieve a matt finish and an impressive feeling to the touch. Currently, to achieve a similar quality, one has to resort to serigraphic varnishes, which are far from providing the same level of homogeneity and consistency. www.derprosa.com

Fluxaxis uses large format 3D printing for blood cancer awareness

UK-based digital manufacturing service provider, Fluxaxis, has 3D printed two life-size master figures that were integral to arecent ‘Make Blood Cancer Visible’ campaign for pharmaceutical company, Janssen. The figures were used by Fluxaxis’ customer, Windsor Workshop, to create moulds for a series of ten life-size human bodies designed to convey the invisible nature of blood cancer. Fluxaxis produced the models on its Massivit 1800 3D Printer in less than eight hours each.

This drastically reduced both the time and costs involved in creating the display compared to traditional production methods. Designed to give blood cancer well deserved priority and recognition within the UK, real life recordings of people with the disease were emitted from the human figures to enhance the sensory impact. The campaign travelled to key locations across London, Cardiff, Manchester and Edinburgh and received widespread pickup across social media platforms.

Massivit 3D opens its doors to European Demo Centre Massivit 3D Printing Technologies, the provider of large format 3D printing solutions for visual communication, is addressing a rise in sales driven by an EMEA-wide surge in interest in 3D printing, with the opening of a new demo centre in Belgium. In partnership with the company’s successful local dealer, Digital Dot, Massivit 3D is opening the new 160 sqm centre, next to Brussels’ main airport, to showcase its innovative, large format 3D printing solutions. Located in the cradle of Belgium’s large format 2D printing sector, it is easily accessible with close transport links. The new demo centre will provide a central location for Massivit 3D’s extensive European dealer network to host potential customers who are keen to test out the creative possibilities that large format 3D printing technology delivers. They will be able to investigate the synergistic services that can be developed and added to their existing offering. The inspirational layout of the demo centre, featuring a reception area, showroom, demo space for exploring applications, and a machine demo area, have all been designed to stimulate visitors’ imagination. Onsite, visitors can

experience live 3D printing sessions on both a Massivit 1800 Flagship 3D Printer and a Massivit 1500 Exploration 3D Printer and witness the unrivalled print speed of up to 35cm/ 13.7’’ on the Z axis per hour. Massivit 3D CEO, Avner Israeli, commented: “Being closer to our customers and prospects is a priority for us. With this EMEA demo centre, PSPs will now be able to gain more immediate access to the technology making it easier for them to grasp the prospective growth opportunities available with Massivit 3D large format 3D printing.” Digital Dot’s COO, Sofie Demeyer added: “We have a longstanding relationship with Massivit 3D and it is an honour for us to have the opportunity to host their EMEA demo centre at our premises. It will help to inspire distributors and customers who are keen to further explore

the potential of 3D printing in expanding their existing services or diving into exciting, new markets.” About Massivit 3D: Massivit 3D Printing Technologies Ltd. is a leading provider of large format 3D printing solutions for visual communication. The company’s solutions enable the creation of super-size advertising, promotional and other marketing-oriented 3D printed sign and display projects for a growing range of sectors — including retail, events and exhibitions, entertainment and architecture. Massivit 3D’s proprietary Gel Dispensing Printing (GDP) technology leverages the company’s unique, instantly-curing printing gel, Dimengel, to quickly and cost-effectively produce lightweight, hollow 3D printed models up to 1.8m / 6ft high. PIXEL PROPHET

WAKING UP TO REALITY I never have a problem waking up, even if actually getting out of bed on a cold winter morning is more of an effort. I have my radio ready tuned to BBC Radio 4 so I wake to calm, level voices, not some unbearably perky jockey telling me what a wonderful day it’s going to be when I can hear the rain splattering on the window already. Martin Christie logs his next installment…

[T]

he early menu starts with the shipping forecast, a daily ritual recitation of coastal zones with bizarre names, and a variety of climatic conditions. Although listening to it over many years I still have no idea where Forties and Cromarty are, it is reassuring to know all is well in the big world outside even if it is a little choppy on the Dogger Bank. The schedule follows with a short news briefing and a farmer’s programme but somewhere in between a little reflection slips in about what happened on this particular day years before. This list can be quite brief or quite extensive probably depending on who has been given the thankless task of doing the historical research, and rarely is a cause of interest. But on this particular Monday in January something did make me take notice. It was ten years since the banking crisis of 2009 when the Royal Bank of Scotland announced the biggest corporate losses in British history, and shares in all the other banks fell through a big hole in the floor. The global crisis had actually started in the USA some months earlier, but the knock on effects spread around the world like falling dominoes as the new year progressed. Propping up the banks with tax payers money may have prevented the terrible social consequences of deep recession which followed the Wall Street crash of 1929, but it did begin a period of uncertainty in the economy, and perhaps even in politics, that we are having to live with to this day. What struck me was that while those of us who remember clearly the events have lived through this period, a whole new generation has grown up with virtually no knowledge of the history and an inevitable acceptance that what we live with now is just the norm. They won’t remember a time when the high street was full of shops that sold things. Not that the banks and the governments are entirely to blame, as along with austerity measures caused by spending all our money, other factors have conspired to bring us where we are today. The popularity of internet shopping

is obviously a major culprit, and again those who haven’t watched it develop would scarcely believe there was a time when people were quite reluctant to share their bank details with an anonymous source in an unknown territory, and it wasn’t so long ago, such is the pace of change. When the first ATMs appeared many people, and not just the elderly, were reluctant to use them and still insisted on going into the premises to see a human being they could trust. These days, most of the banks have gone and only the cash points remain in the wall. The financial circumstances, and changes in retail behaviour have produced a perfect storm for the economy in which we float with some apprehension for the future, especially as within weeks of reading this, we will face another major change in circumstance with consequences apparently unknown even to those who demanded it. It’s the uncertainty that hangs over the next few months that is so worrying, whichever side you take on the “B” issue, but then perhaps we are all adjusting to a time when the unknown is the new normal. After all, when I was at school, admittedly in the last century, my career’s master would have said a job at the bank was a job for life! The New Year is traditionally a time for predictions and resolutions, but I have never known one with so little reason to be confident in making either, but then business has to go on regardless. January’s dark days did bring some highlights. As previewed in our December issue we were looking to get one of Epson’s new large format technical printers on trial and true as their

promise, early one morning a big brown box arrived in the yard. The SC-T5400 is part of a new generation of a long line of printers which will be familiar to those using inkjet printers, and retains many Epson key features, but with significant improvements. I will concentrate on those this time and leave a more in depth review of the printer performance in action to another column. Most significantly, along with its stable mates, it’s designed to be adaptable and very user friendly, particularly in an office or studio environment where such a machine may be a novelty, and operators need as much help as practical. It’s very obvious that Epson have learnt from experience of all things that could possibly go wrong — and there are many and varied — and tried to remove the risks as much as possible. The printer comes pretty well ready to rock straight out of the box, apart from removing protective tape and clear plastic from parts that could be scratched in handling. There are no fittings to be attended to apart from the self assembly stand. Even that is pretty well idiot proof in construction and just needs one Allen

key, supplied with the kit to secure the structure. This is a 36-inch model, enabling A0 plus printing, so it needs a proper stand, small versions can sit on a table top. On the stand it is easily wheeled around as it is not that heavy, although it needs two people to lift it out of the box. Firing the printer up is pretty straightforward with the instructions provided, there’s even a little cupboard to store the paperwork, manuals and driver disc as that’s the sort of documentation that easily gets lost when separated from the machine. The printer comes with the usual startup cartridges containing just enough to run a few test prints so you need to have full sized ones on order. It takes 350 or 700ml ones, four of them, just the standard cyan, magenta, yellow and black. This is not intended to be a top quality fine art or photographic printer, but it does use the latest Ultrachrome XD2 inks, so they are water based pigment and archival on suitable coated paper. While it may not match eight or twelve colour inkjets or precise colour tones, it is massively faster is all print modes, while still capable of pretty good results in solid colour coverage. And that’s what it is built for. The SC-T5400 is a compromise in many respects, but that’s not a criticism, merely a necessary result of getting it priced in the marketplace competitively alongside HP and Canon. There’s perhaps a little more plastic on the superstructure than other Epson models, and we have the simple cost effective paper spindle with 3in removable collars, rather than the more sophisticated, and therefore more expensive, adjustable bobbins on other models. But there have been no shortcuts on design and several features are a step forward from previous models. First, and most obvious, the whole device has a fully enclosed shell so when all the hatches are down, there is nothing that can get inside to spoil the printing or even damage the head. In a busy workspace, it’s not just dust and uncut paper that can fowl up the system. It’s all too easy to leave a pen or a paper clip to fall effortlessly into any exposed cavity when you least expect it! On the basis that anything that can go wrong will go wrong, it’s a good idea to cover all options. If you do happen to leave anything exposed, a gentle beep will remind you of the error of your ways and an orange warning light will come on that’s visible across a crowded room. If you are not used to printers, you can spend a lot of time without noticing something is wrong

vivid-online.com

unless you can hear, or see a very obvious alert, and small alarms on other models are not visible unless you are virtually standing over them. Similarly the big 4.3in touch screen, is not only bright and easily read, but folds upright from its normal flush docking place so it can be seen from a reasonable distance instead of having to run over to see what is going on. The screen displays all the necessary information, and can alter the functions at your fingertips. One of those is paper feeding for either roll or sheet paper and this is very impressive for anyone who has battled with automated loading before. While the printer retains Epson’s normal layout with roll paper on top feeding downwards, the hood has been extended with an extra flap to support all sizes or sheet paper, including as small as A4. This is really useful as it means in an office the printer can also print letters and attachments as well as plans, but where heavy paper is used, any off cuts can be recycled to save wastage so it becomes very efficient. It can print almost all

12 incredible print effects using the

QPP Matrix Strip Ad - 12 Print Effects Matrix Video.indd 1

19

media available apart from Epson’s heavy board as the print path is not straight down like other models. Both papers feed onto a flat plate along which the printhead moves before exiting out of the front, and sheet paper is held until you manually release it. Even the catch tray for larger roll paper has been given some thought. Most printers have a cloth cradle strung out below to capture large format output, but solid material collects dust and other rubbish that can stick to the print. The Epson’s catch cradle is made of fine netting so at least small stuff will fall through and anything bigger will be spotted. Print can be sent by Wifi, plug-in USB, network or local cable so it can be shared to suit workflow, though I tend to go with the latter to avoid anyone also printing emails in A0 by mistake. Given our wide and colourful customer base here in Brighton we will have a good opportunity to test the Epson on all sorts of media, with all sorts of quality and speed, and see how cost effective large modern inkjet printing can be overall. Epson’s print monitoring system will tell us not only the bottom line in paper and ink of what we produce to sell, but also what got printed and went in the bin. That’s when the real profit and loss can be calculated. That will be in the next episode.

PEOPLE IN PRINT Lionel Barber second term at The Printing Charity

Soyang Europe expands sales team

The Printing Charity announced at its 191st Annual Luncheon that Lionel Barber, Editor of the Financial Times, has kindly accepted its invitation to serve a second term as the charity’s President. As the event’s guest speaker and the charity’s 2018 President, Lionel Barber spoke engagingly about his four decades in the news business, starting as a cub reporter at The Scotsman where he valued the skills learnt as an apprentice, before moving to The Sunday Times, followed by his appointment as editor of the Financial Times in 2005. He went on to talk about the evolution of the printed word in the digital world, saying: “Our world has been turned upside down by the digital revolution. It has led to an explosion of creativity and new forms of storytelling. Opportunities for pursuing our craft have never been greater. Working on multiple platforms, we code, compose, and collaborate in ways unimaginable a decade ago. The FT has navigated the transition from print to digital by being bold, not complacent; global, not parochial; evolutionary rather than revolutionary. “In an age of information overload, there is still plenty of mileage in print. I believe the printed newspaper is a great marketing tool. It offers a deeper reading experience, a snapshot of a moment in time of the stories of the day. “The press should have the freedom to get it right and to get it wrong. As editor, I am deeply aware of journalists’ responsibility to get it right and from time to time we will get it wrong. Long live print and long live the printed word.” Jon Wright, the charity’s Chairman, paid tribute to the late Baroness Dean, who passed away in March 2018. She was the charity’s 2017 President and guest speaker at the 2017 Annual Luncheon. He described her as an inspiration to everyone in the industry and will be remembered for her tremendous support, great humour, and energy. Baroness Dean’s husband, Keith McDowall CBE, was guest of honour at this year’s event. www.theprintingcharity.org.uk follow @printingcharity

Gerard Heanue steps down from Heidelberg

Compass accredited EFG programme

After almost 25 years with Heidelberg in a variety of roles around the globe, Gerard Heanue is stepping down from the managing directorship of Heidelberg UK, Sweden, Denmark and South Africa. Gerard will have been Managing Director of this region for eight years. He leaves the role in March 2019 but will still be on call until the summer. Gerard is not completely leaving the print sector. He will continue to be involved with trade body Picon, where he is currently Chairman until June, and with the Stationers’ Company where he is Treasurer of the Foundation, the charitable arm of the Livery, and serves on the Court. He has already been approached regarding possible non-executive roles and is currently reviewing his options. “I am 57 and always planned to retire early and I think this is the right time,” he says. “My wife Elaine and I plan to have a mini gap year, starting with a month in New Zealand at the end of 2019 and then visiting our favourite countries in the Far East. I also plan to start to playing tennis and golf again.” Gerard’s career with Heidelberg began in 1995 when he was appointed Finance Director of Heidelberg UK. Four years later he moved to Singapore to become chief financial officer of Heidelberg Asia Pacific. Between two more stints as Finance Director of Heidelberg UK (20042006 and 2008-2011) Gerard also worked as chief financial officer of Heidelberg Europe, Middle East and Africa, based in Germany where he learnt about the intricacies and challenges of doing sales in the ex-Soviet region. His three wishes for the printing industry as he leaves are that the sector gains the recognition it deserves, that it promotes itself better to the public and that both printers and suppliers invest more in young people and training. Asked how his wife Elaine and daughter Ellie had reacted to his impending retirement, Gerard replies: “They are looking forward to seeing more of me… honestly! My wife is hoping I can make a start on the ‘to do’ list that she’s compiled.” www.heidelberg.co.uk

Compass Business Finance has become an accredited lender under the British Business Bank’s Enterprise Finance Guarantee (EFG) programme. EFG accreditation will enable Compass to increase its supply of asset finance to smaller businesses, primarily in the print, packaging and engineering sectors. The EFG programme provides lenders with a Government-backed guarantee for up to 75% of the outstanding balance of eligible facilities, potentially enabling a ‘no’ credit decision from a lender to become a ‘yes’. It supports facilities of between £1,000 and £1.2m to smaller businesses that are viable but unable to obtain finance from their lender due to having inadequate security to meet the lender’s normal credit requirements. Bernie Skivington, Director, Guarantee and Wholesale Solutions at British Business Bank said: “The British Business Bank is committed to helping smaller UK businesses access the finance they need to realise their potential. “Accrediting Compass under the EFG programme will enable them to support more smaller businesses that are working successfully, but which might otherwise struggle to acquire business critical equipment or machinery that can boost their growth. Mark Nelson, Director of Compass Business Finance, said: “When EFG extended to asset finance, we saw an opportunity to use the programme to increase our provision to businesses in the print, packaging and engineering sectors. Through the accreditation, we’re now able to further extend our range of competitive and flexible solutions to those industries.” Since its launch in 2009, the Enterprise Finance Guarantee has supported smaller businesses with the provision of over 29,950 loans and other facilities totalling more than £3.2bn. www.compassbusinessfinance.co.uk

Mimaki at Heimtextil

Mimaki Europe collaborated with over 10 inspirational world-leading designers at Heimtextil under the theme of ‘The Fusion of Innovation and Design’ and celebrating digital print within all elements of art, interior design and fashion, Mimaki commissioned work from designers including Sigrid Calon and Claire Vos (Studio Roderick Vos), which were showcased on the Mimaki stand and used to demonstrate the power of digital print to increase the creative process. Seeing printed applications on a diverse range of textiles, fabrics and interior materials, visitors learnt how they too can use advanced Mimaki technology to drive design innovation and profitability. From designers including Anousjka Röben displaying shoes; creative studio Deux d’Amsterdam showing a unique kimono designed specifically for Mimaki and Heimtextil, all designs were digitally printed by Textiles & More (T&M). The Mimaki stand showcased a printer for almost every type of textile application, with additional digitally printed textiles applied to design classics in the ‘Pode’ range from Leolux, and feature walls utilising photography from Arjan Benning also being displayed. “Heimtextil is always a really good show for us. For 2019, we’re excited to share the results of our collaboration with these amazing designers and to demonstrate what’s possible with our comprehensive range of printers,” said Mark Sollman, Mimaki Application Manager EMEA. “From entry-level printers to production workhorses, each Mimaki system delivers premium quality print and profit-enhancing productivity. What’s more, using our wide range of inks, a huge variety of substrate applications now becomes available too. So, whether you’re a designer seeking to push the creative boundaries of textile printing, or a brand looking to increase your productivity and lower your environmental footprint, a visit to the Mimaki stand is a must,” continued Sollman. Heimtextil visitors experienced Mimaki’s broad portfolio of printing solutions, split into three distinct areas including interior design, fashion and art. In the art section, the UCJV150-160 inkjet printer with environmentally-friendly UV-curable inks, was used to produce

wallpaper. Textiles were printed in both the interior design and fashion areas, with the ultra-productive TS551800 sublimation transfer inkjet printer focusing on upholstery. Using a belt-conveying solution, the TX300P-1800B entry-level directto-textile system also printed onto stretchable fabrics used in fashion. Claire Vos, introduced by Textiles & More (T&M) and a graduate of Design Academy Eindhoven, studied her craft in Italy, Switzerland and Indonesia before settling in the Netherlands. With a contemporary graphical industrial flavour to her work, many of Vos’s products are produced using Mimaki printers for Textiles & More. Her work, shown under the theme of ‘The Dressing Room’, was shown at Heimtextil through Mimaki-printed upholstery including chairs and cushions. Bringing vivid colour and fine graphical elements into her work, Sigrid Calon is a visual artist. At Heimtextil, the detail and vibrancy of Calon’s art was brought to life by a 2x2 metre artwork utilising Mimaki’s latest printhead technology delivering smooth gradations and sharp and precise details. Examples of Calon’s work were also be shown in various materials, produced by Mimaki advanced print technologies including UV and 3D printing. www.hybridservices.co.uk

SHOWTIME

CANON FUTURE BOOK FORUM Canon hosted the annual Future Book Forum at its Customer Experience Centre in Poing, Germany. The event welcomed over 400 international publishers, book printers, book distributors and quick print industry influencers.

[B]

ringing together the publishing community, the event focused on the industry’s potential to leverage data to transform the future of publishing and open up new revenue streams. Over two days of presentations and workshops, attendees discussed the power of data, the value in building direct relationships with readers and why establishing a community is a publisher’s most important asset. They also explored how to sustain a continuous omni-channel experience, using industry examples to show how businesses have used data to enhance content to drive growth. A key discussion point was how book producers can implement a printon-demand business model using the latest digital print solutions, to optimise stock management and streamline automated workflows for further production efficiencies. “Future Book Forum is an exciting collaborative event that drives innovation across the whole publishing industry. Creating new relationships between businesses in our community helps to deliver better omni-channel content experiences for consumers. When publishers work together in new ways, our partnerships become just as powerful as our innovations,” says event chair Peter Fisk. “Intelligent growth in publishing relies on us looking more holistically at individuals, not just as readers, but as consumers. It’s about putting the customer first and creating valuable consumer experiences that enhance the value of the physical book. Big data and artificial intelligence can help to deliver better digitally-enabled content experiences. What we’ve learnt from this year’s Future Book Forum is that now is the time to take the leap and access the new opportunities that arise from using insight and data. It’s not how you collect the data that leads to success but how you intelligently use it. ” Nick Morris, Founding Partner at Canvas8, explored how publishers can use consumer insights and behaviours to their advantage. He explained, “Today’s publishers do not face competition with other publishers — the competition is for people’s time. A recent survey among publishers showed that product and data were their top priorities. Understanding audiences is the master key to unlocking their potential. Publishers need to do more to deliver considered products and reader experiences, but they will only be able to do so by first understanding their audience through consumer insights. Mark Allin, former CEO of global publishing company John Wiley, discussed why publishers need to be more radical with their strategies and business models, saying, “Publishers need to have the confidence to try new ideas and get rid of old ways of working. But this requires a cultural change within the industry and dedicated resources to successfully innovate. Publishers must use the tools and technology available to them to get closer to their reader community to foster

innovation and drive growth. Niche communities drive content, but building a strong network is just as important as providing relevant content.” Tom Betts, Chief Data Officer at the Financial Times, used the example of the Financial Times to show how a data-driven approach can turn customer insight into profitable growth, saying: “Data should play a central role in any business strategy. There’s lots of data to be gathered on consumers outside of their reading interests and it’s not only about how it’s gathered, but how it is used. Data can help publishers develop a deep understanding of their customers - to make recommendations or predict consumers’ next steps and to better understand their future content journey so as to be able to create a more tailored, richer and more valuable experience. Sven Fund, Founder & Managing Director of Fullstop and the popular keynote speaker at the 2017 event, returned to discuss the need for systematic innovation management in established publishing houses. Fund explained, “Some areas of publishing are becoming more data driven. For example, analytics and algorithms can now be used to examine reader behaviour, such as when and how quickly a book was read, and evaluate whether it will be a bestseller. As a result, one of the trends we are noticing is how the reader is being rediscovered as a partner in the publishing process. Authors can now use data to craft their content based on understanding consumer behaviours. For publishers, it’s not about producing more titles, it’s about targeting readers in a more precise way.” Peter Wolff, Senior Director, Customer Group Commercial Print and Production CRD, Canon Europe comments: “Future Book Forum provides an opportunity for the whole publishing community to come together, sharing their experiences on how the market is changing, inspiring other delegates with real-world examples, and demonstrating how to embrace change with digital technologies. Over the past six years, participation has grown year on year, proving that the event has become an effective platform for exploring innovations and how these drive new business opportunities. As in other business sectors, leveraging customer data will help publishers to turn a new page, driving customer-orientated innovation that will stimulate commercial growth.” www.canon.co.uk

Linx enables reuse of glass bottles

Coding and marking specialist Linx Printing Technologies has launched its new returnable Linx Black bottling ink 1068 to enable the reuse of glass bottles used in the drinks industry. The ability to reuse glass bottles has significant environmental benefits. When glass bottles can be collected and reused, as already happens in the UK with milk bottles, far fewer bottles need to be manufactured. This saves significant amounts of energy and resources — over and above even the benefits of recycling. Once the Linx Black bottling ink 1068 has been used for printing batch and date codes, the bottles are returned after use. The ink is then removed in the bottle-washing process, enabling new codes to be printed onto them ahead of reuse. The demand for a solution that enables the widespread reuse of glass drinks bottles is emphatically underlined by Linx’s recent consumer research. The survey found that 89% of those questioned were concerned about the impact of soft drink packaging on the environment

Baker Labels contributes at Colchester Zoo During the manufacture of self-adhesive labels, dozens of heavy duty cardboard cores are removed from material master reels every week and disposed of. Baker’s are unable to use them for their reels of printed labels as they are the wrong weight for the finished products. The disposal of large quantities of the cardboard tubes hasn’t sat too well with the company, so in an age when we all want to do our best for the environment by recycling they looked for options. They heard about Colchester Zoo’s environmental enrichment programme where they provide a mentally and physically enriching environment specific to each species in their care so Baker’s contacted them to see if the cores could be of any use. When the assistant curator, Liz Butcher, confirmed they would definitely be able to find a use for them Baker’s shipped two pallets off to Colchester Zoo straight away. “In captivity, food and water is supplied, territory is already delineated, social groupings are usually fairly stable and structured, there are no predators to avoid, and quite often mates are selected for them. With all the extra free time, the animals have a need for new and entertaining or

— and that 91% would welcome a scheme to enable the reuse of glass drinks bottles. This strongly underlines the need for a coding ink that will enable such a scheme. The quality of Linx Black bottling ink 1068 is shown by its ability to print clearly onto glass in cold-fill bottling and in humid environments. The ink has also been designed to cope with the challenges of providing clear, legible codes for bottled drinks — for example, by resisting removal when subjected to pasteurisation, immersed in ice water, stored in a warehouse for long periods, or refrigerated. This reduces the likelihood of drinks companies facing product recalls. There is no compromise on the quality of the code — the ink delivers high-quality, durable coding so that customers can meet the regulations and protect their brands. John Tierney, Marketing Director at Linx, comments: “Consumers are looking for solutions that minimise the impact of drinks packaging on the environment. The opportunity exists for brands to introduce effective solutions for the reuse of bottles — and by ensuring the latest coding inks can be removed as part of the process, we are helping to enable the creation of these schemes.” As well as launching the new ink, Linx has upgraded its 8900 series of Continuous Ink Jet (CIJ) printers with new software that is opening it up to more applications and delivering new competitive advantages for beverage customers. These enhancements mean the Linx 8900 series is now capable of producing faster print speeds — by as much as 33% for one-line, seven drop-high print, now up to 440 metres per minute — to enable higher production output in high-speed bottling applications. A further benefit of the upgrades is the series’ new ‘prompted dates’ feature, which facilitates faster, mistake-proof message changes. When a message is selected or updated, the operator simply chooses from a predefined range of dates that are suitable for the product being coded. This means there is no need to edit dates manually, making editing quick and easy, and is especially beneficial where date accuracy is critical. www.linxglobal.com

Cloud adoption and artificial intelligence in the print industry, predicts Y Soft 2018 was the year of digital transformation; with organisations of all sizes either implementing or planning projects in every area from customer service operations to workforce management. Every business process is being assessed and within this, print management has also experienced a shift, according to enterprise office solution provider, Y Soft Corporation, which believes that 2019 will see digital transformation projects disrupt print management even further. “In 2019, businesses will increasingly focus on technology and processes that allow them to be more productive and secure,” says James Turner, Regional Sales Manager at Y Soft, who notes the following key predictions for the year ahead:

CLOUD ADOPTION: “As businesses increasingly focus on technology and processes that allow them to be more efficient, productive and secure, failure to implement cloud printing as part of this philosophy, risks organisations unable to use IT resources for more productive projects. Managing print services in the cloud is essential if organisations want to take advantage of cloud services to run their business efficiently.” RESELLER AGILITY: “As the industry faces challenges ahead in addressing the inevitable digital disruption, resellers need to demonstrate the agility and vision to be at the forefront of meeting customer’s needs. Customers are looking for solutions that help them in their digital transformation and this can include business processes beyond the traditional print and capture areas. Resellers should look to expand their offerings and partner with solution providers who can offer attractive, new revenue opportunities.” ONE INTEGRATED SUPPLIER: “As digital transformation initiatives continue to develop, and businesses look for ways of ensuring an efficient, smooth-running office of the future, organisations will want to use one supplier for multiple document management solutions — as this provides a simpler support model. To do so, companies will start to look at ‘one-stop shops’ that offer comprehensive solutions - both print management and document capture with software and hardware support - through one OEM vendor.” ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: “The potential disruption that AI brings to the print industry is significant. AI is often currently used in predictive maintenance as well as paper to digital workflows; however, there is a scope to develop these further by enhancing existing

products and services. One of the benefits and drivers towards the adoption of AI is the enhanced security measures of defence against security threats. By using AI to enhance security measures, the decision making process will become streamlined and improved as the automated system can detect and stop attacks quickly, while learning and adapting by using data.” HEIGHTENED SECURITY: “This year it seemed we were hearing of a new data breach every day and as such, businesses have become more conscious of the various touch points throughout the organisation, such as printers that require both external firewalls and strong internal authentication. As enterprise workflow solutions are typically embedded as part of the MFD’s set of features and communicate to thirdparty systems, the security of the entire system must be considered. Therefore, it is important for close collaboration between an enterprise solution provider, the MFD service provider and an organisation’s IT department. www.ysoft.com

now available at retailers in Denmark, combine design elements such as snowflakes, reindeer, and candy canes to create 100,000 unique labels for two berry flavours of Aqua d’Or Sparkles water. HP SmartStream Collage uses algorithms to create random combinations of specified design elements, thereby creating one-of-a-kind artwork for unlimited impact for packaging, commercial, and speciality printing. The variable design creates movement in the appearance of the bottles across the shelves. “Aqua d’Or is spreading some holiday magic with playful designs on its flavoured water bottles for celebrations using the new HP Collage design capability with HP digital printing,” said Line Giessing Jørgensen, Brand Manager at Danone. “This new software technology provides brands with the opportunity to amplify the seasonality of their products in creative ways.” HP SmartStream Collage is the next generation of HP Indigo hyper-customisation software, introduced to the market with HP SmartStream Mosaic. Danone used Mosaic and Kozak’s designs for its “Flow Your Way” summer mineral water bottle campaign. The brand decided to try the new HP Collage at Folienprint Rako to create a new twist in variable design printing on its Sparkles flavoured water product line, which uses plastic from 50% recycled materials. “Brands can now bring a new experience using variable design element printing, including seasonal products and flavours, and attract attention to their products. The HP SmartStream Collage design software for HP Indigo digital printing offers big new packaging marketing potential,” said Michel Koch, head of pre-press digital at All4Labels. The Sparkles labels were printed on the 76 cm-wide HP Indigo 20000 Digital Press, delivering high-volume, mid-web format label printing on a wide range of materials, and converted into print-ready PDF files with the cloud-based HP PrintOS Composer. www.hp.com

Labels are so well hidden in plain sight that many people are not aware of their omnipresence. Would you be able to guess how many labels you see on any given day, and how essential they are to help you make the right brand choices? The professionals who dedicate their talents to develop labels on a daily basis are equally discrete. They work silently in the background to create labels, to add value to their customers’ branded products, or to add value through process improvements. Consequently, the label industry is not well known to the generation of talents who are currently making career choices, while at the same time, it innovates at a fast pace and needs to attract ambitious talents with fresh ideas. In this context, FINAT, the European association for the self-adhesive label and adjacent narrow-web converting industry, has launched the #LABELicious talent competition on the occasion of its 60th anniversary. The competition’s objective is to increase the visibility of the label industry, of its exciting professional challenges, and of its excellent career perspectives to students and early career professionals aged between 18 and 25. Entrants are invited to submit their ideas and concepts for labels in three categories: • Smart / Intelligent / Multifunctional Labels — #LABELicious calls for truly fresh and feasible ideas about how integrating technologies in brand/functional labels will enhance the label’s experience and value in an end-customer’s business case for the year 2025. The entry should demonstrate how label converting technology adds value to a label through new functionality, production methods, or technical innovation. • Brand Design — #LABELicious calls for next-generation label design, both visually

33

and from a constructive and functional perspective. The entry should demonstrate how in 2025, a branded label will create an outstanding experience, with a competitive advantage and added value for a brand in its own product category. • Sustainability — #LABELicious calls for new approaches to improve sustainability in the field of product labelling. The entry should demonstrate how in 2025, a new approach to label design, production and application can contribute to a positive sustainability performance. Competition participants will be able to submit their entries on the website www. Labelicious.eu before 15 May 2019. The early launch enables interested young professionals to prepare their ideas in due time, either individually or in the context of their professional education. During the entire competition, #LABELicious will publish educational and inspirational material from the industry to show its diversity in craftsmanship, its combination of creativity and technology, and its continuous focus on sustainability to improve the environmental performance of product labelling. The relevance of reaching out to the next generation workforce is illustrated by the industry-wide cross-European support for the project. “The findings of our annual industry survey, the FINAT RADAR, demonstrate the sector’s growing challenge to attract young talents over the past few years,” says Jules Lejeune, Managing Director of FINAT. “This project currently gets support from some 25 international and national trade media companies, industry partners of all sizes across the value chain, and virtually all national label associations in Europe, proving that #LABELicious is addressing a top priority challenge.” With the support of the competition’s partners, the international winner in each category will receive a week of industry experience, a complimentary visit to Labelexpo 2019 in Brussels where the awards’ ceremony will take place, and an additional financial reward. “The biggest benefit of the #LABELicious project, however is to create connections between this innovative and fast evolving hightech industry and the next generation talent force,” continues Lejeune. “We aim to reach the audience both directly through our media efforts, and indirectly through our relationships with the educational institutions in packaging technology and design. The European label industry challenges next generation talents, and as an industry, we are ready to be likewise challenged by the fresh ideas of the next generation.” www.Labelicious.eu

HP helps brands print personalisation HP has unveiled its framework, The Personalisation Pinwheel, to help brand owners tap into the growing personalisation market. Informed by insights from more than 45 million online conversations across the globe, the framework hones in on what motivates consumers to personalise — from photo books to magazine covers to consumer packaged goods — and how brands can capitalise on those motivations. “Personalisation is a powerful tool to create meaningful experiences with consumers. It increases brand loyalty and engagement and at the same time accelerates business growth and speed to market,” said Nancy Janes, global head of brand innovation, HP Inc. “HP’s digital printing capabilities are transforming how consumers connect to brands through personalised packaging and products.” “In our eyes, personalisation encompasses far more than just customised or stylised products,” said Charles Ohiaeri, chief fulfillment officer, Zazzle. “It’s about how we can intelligently curate and contour the whole experience for those in our community — makers, designers and consumers alike. HP’s digital printing solutions allow us to serve our customers in ways we would not have considered previously.” HP’s research uncovered the digital print advantages of the Personalisation Pinwheel: • Fingerprinting: drive share of market through collectability of unique items • Flying Your Flag: drive engagement by personalising products according to heritage/ codes • Letting It All Hang Out: increase connection with Millennials and Gen Z by celebrating consumer stories individually • Permission to Indulgence: allow consumers to tailor their experience of the world to their own unique preferences • Bringing Bonds to Life: grow penetration by expanding into gifting and e-commerce through fully customised products • Mindful Materialism: build value and differentiate through purpose by enabling consumers to express their own voice in solving social or environmental issues www.hp.com

Print on paper straws Hole-in-the-wall cash Close Brothers Asset Finance has provided start-up funding for Transcend Packaging, a Wales-based packaging firm focused on sustainable paper-based packaging — including straws — digital printing and biodegradable paper cups. The firm has already seen impressive growth in only a short space of time, with deals signed to supply paper straws to some of the UK’s leading fast food and coffee chains, including McDonald’s, along with major distribution companies servicing the hospitality sector. They are now seeing extensive demand across Europe and North America and are in the process of growing to a target of 200 employees by the end of 2021. “We are delighted to once again have supported an ambitious start-up firm that will generate new employment in the Caerphilly region of Wales,” said Paul Philbrick, Sales Director at Close Brothers Asset Finance’s print division. “Environmental-based products, like paper straws, is an exciting market for the packaging sector, which we are fully committed to. “We have a long history in the printing and packaging industry and understand that many business owners are cautious about investing, but by being creative and innovative in the way we fund assets, we have helped many businesses limit their risks yet still have access to the capital needed to grow sustainably.” Close Brothers Asset Finance has committed to a number of Hire Purchase agreements for multiple assets over a time period up to 84 months, including a KBA printing press that enables printing onto various substrates, and the paper straw manufacturing machines. Lorenzo Angelucci, Managing Director, Transcend Packaging: “There has been an increasing demand for sustainability across the packaging industry, mainly because of customer pressure and an increase in regulatory and government waste strategy policies. “Paper is taking on an ever-growing and important role in the government’s waste solution strategy and we saw a gap in the market to produce eco-friendly products for the UK and European markets. “Partnering with Close Brothers Asset Finance was a logical choice because of their long history in the print and packaging sector; they were extremely easy to deal with and they understood from the off-set what my requirements were, advising and actively helping find solutions.” www.transcendpackaging.com www.closebrothers.com

Andesign up to the Tusk Birmingham based large format print business, Andesign, has deployed its Massivit 1800 3D Printing Solution to produce a jaw-dropping 3.5m-high x 2m-long (11.5ft x 6.56ft) African elephant. Once 3D printed, the impressive mammal was given a coat of paint to ensure added realism. It can now be seen smashing through the wall of the company’s Sutton-Coldfield premises. This will serve as a permanent fixture to underscore Andesign’s ability to get its customers noticed with high-impact creative projects. www.andesignuk.com

Innotech Digital client Specialist Signs recently created a ‘killer’ wall display that’s a real feast for the eyes, thanks to General Formulations Wallmark Canvas. The Bournebased Specialist Signs company was approached by Jimmy’s Killer Prawns, a South African business, to create bespoke wall coverings for its new restaurant in Leicester. The installation needed to cover both plasterboard and a wooden frame around a doorway, so they needed a media that would give a consistent finish. Bob Southwell from Specialist Signs said: “It’s long term installation in a new store for them, so the finish had to be top quality and to match their previous installations. We took advice from Innotech on the vinyls in their range to decide on the best one for the job. While price is always a factor, we needed to make sure that the media we chose was suitable for a long term installation, taking into account the make up of the walls. “We chose the General Formulations Wallmark Canvas as a trial for this job and we were really pleased with the results using our HP Latex 560 printer as the colours are really nice. It was easy to line up and tended to hold on its own — some vinyls can stretch in all directions when they get hot while printing, but this lined up well with no distortion, and it wasn’t overly tacky “Installation was a one man job and it took just 2-3 hours, so it was a good result. We’ll definitely use the Wallmark Canvas again — in fact we’ve already bought some into stock. It’s value for money, the clients were happy, especially with the embossed finish, and it gives as good a result as some of the more expensive films.” General Formulations Wallmark Canvas is removable and can be reapplied a number of times due to its microsphere beaded adhesive, making it fast and easy to install. All the General Formulations range are polymeric five year products, meaning there is very little shrinkage compared to normal monomeric products. “There’s a growing trend for unique wall displays in all kinds of industries including hospitality, retail, and entertainment,” added Bob, “especially for one off events or where people are in rented space, making permanent displays difficult. While it may be possible to paint on walls, that can leave layers that will show through when papered over. “By using vinyls we can create stunning displays that can be easily removed — we even did a job recently for an event that ran over just one weekend, proving that vinyl is the perfect solution for seasonal promotions, sales and so on — whenever you want to make an impact without having a permanent effect.” Marketing manager for Innotech Digital, Kieran Dallow commented: “General Formulations produce a huge range of quality medias for Solvent, Eco-Solvent, Latex and UV Curable printers. Their specialist medias can be used on carpets, warehouses, floors, walls, motorbikes, cars and commercial vehicles and installed in restaurants, classrooms, offices, homes and retail outlets, amongst others. We hold stock of all their most popular ranges, allowing our printing and signmaking customers to create brilliant new products for a greater variety of markets than before.” www.innotechdigital.com • www.specialistsigns.com

SOMETHING TO SHARE…? Girl from South America A girl in our office, from South America, is always in a hurry... We call her URGENT-TINA.

You’re Late

A clever sales estimator wanders back home at 3 a.m. and proceeds to get an earful from his wife. “You’re late!” she yells. “You said you’d be home by 11:45!” “Actually,” the salesman replies coolly, “I said I’d be home by a quarter of 12.”

May I Say A Word?

A woman sitting at her deceased husband’s funeral. A man leans in to her and ask, “Do you mind if I say a word?” “No, go right ahead,” the woman replies. The man stands and clears his throat, then says “Plethora” and sits back down. “Thanks,” the woman says, “that means a lot.”

Just the Past

Wife goes to an astrologer to learn more about her husband. The astrologer asks her, “Do you want to know about your husband’s future?” Without hesitation, the wife responds. “I will decide his future, you just tell me about his past.”

Valentines Selection Box

What did one flame say to the other on Valentine’s Day? We’re a perfect match. Two antennae met on a roof, fell in love and got married. Their wedding ceremony wasn’t fancy. The reception, however, was excellent. If you step on a purple mushroom, you’ll be forced to marry the ugliest person in the world,” warned the old gnome, so the man continued carefully through the woods. He didn’t step on any purple mushrooms. Suddenly a beautiful woman walked up and said: “We have to marry.” “Why?” asked the man, smiling. “I just stepped on one of those pesky purple mushrooms!” she replied. A book never written: “Avoiding Valentine’s Day” by I.M.N. Love. Tom Swiftie: “Let’s make our own

Valentines,” Tom said craftily. Tom Swiftie: “She tore my Valentine in half!” said Tom halfheartedly. A woman was taking a nap on Valentine’s Day afternoon. After she awoke, she told her husband, “I just dreamed that you gave me a gorgeous and expensive diamond necklace for Valentine’s Day! What do you think it means?” “You’ll know tonight,” he said. That evening, her husband came home with a small package for her. Thrilled, she opened it and found a book titled “The Meaning of Dreams. A Cub Scout found a frog that said, “Kiss me and I will become a beautiful princess.” The boy studied the frog, then put it in his pocket. “Hey,” the frog croaked, “how come you didn’t kiss me?” “I’d rather have a talking frog than a princess any day!” Craig: Why do melons have to get married in churches? Joe: Why? Craig: Because they cantaloupe! Justin: What did the boy sweetie say to the girl sweetie? John: I haven’t a clue. Justin: “It’s Valentine’s Day and we’re mint for each other.” Dawson: What do pigs give on Feb. 14? Brad: I don’t know. Dawson: Valen-swines! Tobin: What happened to your leg? Matt: I went to a seafood dance on Valentine’s Day. Tobin: And? Matt: I pulled a mussel! Ben: What did one magnet say to the other magnet on Valentine’s Day? Finn: I have no idea. What? Ben: “I find you very attractive!”

More post from the heart

I asked my friend if he’d bought his wife a gift for Valentine’s Day. He’s a bit of a chauvinist pig so he surprised me when he replied, “Yeah, I’ve got her a belt and a bag.” I said, “That’s very thoughtful of you. I hope she appreciates it.” He said, “So do I. And hopefully the vacuum cleaner will work much better now.

Are you game?

My wife just sent me a text saying, “I’ve just got you the best Valentine’s Day present ever! xox” I really hope she misspelt “Xbox”.

Say it with...

My wife rang me at work on Valentine’s Day. She said, “Three of the girls in the office have just received bunches of flowers. They’re absolutely gorgeous.” I said, “That’s probably why they’ve been sent flowers then.”

Don’t open until the 14th...

What do single people call Valentine’s Day? Happy Independence Day. My wife told me she doesn’t want much this Valentine’s Day. She said, “Just some chocolates and a few little surprises will be fine.” Kinder Eggs it is then. What do you call a very small Valentine? A Valen-tiny. It’s always exciting to get a Valentine’s Day card pushed through your door, with no stamp on it - just your name on the envelope…except when you’re in prison! Yet again, this Valentine’s Day I’ll be in my house all alone, watching a film on TV and eating a takeaway. I really can’t see a downside. Last Valentine’s Day, my fiancée of four years bought me a lottery ticket and I won £5 million. I wonder what’s she doing nowadays? My wife just called me lazy and said I’d better have something planned for Valentine’s Day. I said, “Yes, I was thinking of taking the Christmas decorations down.” For the last twenty years, I’ve received a Valentine’s Day card from the same secret admirer. So I was upset when I didn’t get one this year. First my gran dies, now this? I’ve just booked a table for my girlfriend and me on Valentine’s Day. I hope she knows how to play snooker. My girlfriend told me she hoped I had something special planned for Valentine’s Day. I said, “I’m working on it.” and she smiled. Which was weird; I thought she’d be upset that I’m having to work on

Valentine’s Day. I gave blood today. It may not be the best Valentine’s Day present but at least it came from the heart. What do squirrels give for Valentine’s Day? Forget-me-nuts. This year I’ve got my wife a Valentine’s Day present that will really take her breath away. A treadmill. I got my wife a new iron for Valentine’s Day. She was so overcome with emotion that she ran out of the house crying. I think she must be still out telling her friends how wonderful I am, because she’s not come back yet. I can’t wait for Valentine’s Day because I get to make cupcakes for a special someone and that special someone is me. Dear Alcohol ... will you be my Valentine? What do farmers give their wives on Valentine’s Day? Hogs and kisses. Valentine’s Day is the one-day of the year when you get anonymous mail from strangers basically saying they want to sleep with you, and you go, “Awww...” Valentine’s Day is a day when a lot of people are reminded just what a bad shot Cupid was. As a waiter, on Valentine’s Day I would put a fake engagement ring into a lot of meals. If it’s not Valentine’s Day and you see a man in a flower shop, you can probably start up a conversation by asking, “What did you do?” I think Cupid must need glasses. The last time I dated a girl, he missed my heart but hit my wallet.

Not My Dog

I had a knock at my door earlier, it was a policeman… “Mr Cook?” “Yes,” I replied. “I’m afraid your dog has just been reported to have chased someone on a bike.” I said, “That’s not possible, my dog doesn’t have a bike.”

5280 Feet Long

I found a rock that is 5280 feet long. It must be a MILESTONE!

Perfect Partner

A very successful businessman had a meeting with his new sonin-law. “I welcome you into the family!” said the man. “To show you how much we care for you, I am making you a 50-50 partner in my business. All you have to do is go to the factory everyday and learn the operation.” The son-in-law interrupted. “I hate factories. I can’t stand the noise.” “I see,” replied the father-in-law. “Well, then you’ll work in the office and take charge of some of the operations.” “I hate office work,” said the sonin-law. “I can’t stand being stuck behind a desk.” “Wait a minute,” said the father-inlaw. “I just made you half owner of a money-making industry, but you don’t like factories, and won’t work in an office. What am I going to do with you?” “Easy,” said the son-in-law. “Buy me out.”

The Typewriter

They had been up in the attic together doing some cleaning. The kids uncovered an old manual typewriter and asked, “Hey Mum, what’s this?” “Oh, that’s an old typewriter,” she answered, thinking that would satisfy their curiosity. “Well what does it do?” they asked. “I’ll show you,” she said and returned with a blank piece of paper. She rolled the paper into the typewriter and began striking the keys, leaving black letters of print on the page. “WOW!” they exclaimed, “That’s

really cool! But how does it work like that? Where do you plug it in?” “There is no plug,” she answered. “It doesn’t need a plug.” “Then where do you put the batteries?” they persisted. “It doesn’t need batteries either.,” she continued. “Wow! This is so cool!” they exclaimed. “Someone should have invented this a long time ago!”

Married Man’s Confession

I always read my wife’s horoscope... to see what kind of day I am going to have.

Sales Pedalling

Two sales guys on a tandem bike where pedalling up a hill. It took forever to get to the top. When they finally got to the top the first sales guy said in a pant, “Whew, that was so hard.” The second replied, “Yeah, good thing I was pushing the brakes the whole time or we would have rolled down backwards.”

Lead Astray

Knock! Knock! Who’s there? A broken pencil. A broken pencil who? Never mind, this joke is pointless.

Norwegian Navy

Why does the Norway Navy have bar codes on the side of their ships? So when they come back to port they can SCANDINAVIAN.

Happy Dog

A man running a little behind schedule arrives at the cinema, goes in to watch the movie that has already started, and as his eyes adjust to the darkness, he

When the phone rang she asked her five-year-old daughter to answer it.

is surprised to see a dog sitting beside its master in the row ahead, intently watching the movie. It even seemed to be enjoying the movie: wagging its tail in the happy bits, drooping its ears at the sad bits, and hiding its eyes with its paws at the scary bits. After the movie, the man approaches the dog’s owner, “Wow, your dog really seemed to enjoy the movie. I’m amazed!” “Yes, I can’t believe it myself,” came the reply. “He hated the book.”

Good Guesser

Our pre-natal class included a tour of the paediatric wing of the hospital. When a new baby was brought into the nursery, all the women tried to guess its weight, but the guy standing next to me was the only male to venture a number. “Looks like 9 pounds,” he offered confidently. “This must not be your first,” I said. “Oh, yes,” he said, “it’s my first.” “Then how would you know the weight of a baby?” I asked.

Modest Income

“Darling,” said the young man to his new bride. “Now that we are married, do you think you will be able to live on my modest income?” “Of course, dearest, no trouble,” she answered. “But what will you live on?”

I Remembered

Not to brag, but I just went into another room and actually remembered why I went in there...

The Slowest in the Herd

As the herd of cows were traveling, one of them was falling behind.

“Mummy can’t come to the phone to talk to you right now…

39

She shouted out to the others that she could not run any faster. She shouted, “Slow down, my calves are killing me!”

Top Dog

A dog walks into a butcher shop and the butcher asks, “What do you want?” The dog points to steak in a glass case. “How many pounds?” The dog barks twice. “Anything else?” The dog points to some pork chops and barks four times. So the butcher wraps up a twopound steak and four pork chops, and places the bag in the dog’s mouth. He then takes money from a purse tied around the dog’s neck, and sees him out. A customer, who has been watching in amazement, follows the dog to a house several blocks away, where it rings the doorbell to be let in. As the owner appears at the door, the customer says, “What a remarkable dog!” “Remarkable?” snorts the owner. “This is the second time this week he’s forgotten his keys.”

What’s for Dinner?

Last night I was relaxing on the sofa watching TV when I heard my wife’s voice from the kitchen: “Oh sweetheart, what would you like for dinner, my love? Chicken, beef or lamb?” I said, “Thank you, darling. I think I’ll have chicken.” She replied, “You’re havin’ a peanut butter sandwich. I was talkin’ to the dog!”

Little Sister.

My little sister broke my new torch. I won’t be able to see her in the same light ever again.

…she’s hitting the bottle.”
