KALL KWIK HULL UPGRADES TO KAS BOOKLETMAKER Kall Kwik in Hull has upgraded its Kasfold booklet maker with a new Kasfold 5000HCS short run bookletmaker from Ashgate designed to meet the requirements of the digital print market. . “We bought our previous booklet maker in January 1996 and, as booklet making is central to our offering, it served us very well indeed for over 25 years,” said Joy Gledhill, Director. “One of the benefits of the new booklet maker is its 5000 staple cassette, which saves us time in changing over cassettes. It also improves our productivity. Another benefit is that it can corner as well as edge staple A4 sets, which our previous machine could not do.” The company did look at alternative machines before placing the order with Ashgate. “We know this machine so well. It’s a real work horse and good value too, so when they recommended this new model with the extra features, there was no contest,” Joy explained.

This compact, floor standing, KF5000HCS produces A4, A5 and A6 finished size booklets up to 25 sheets and a cover (100 pages). It takes A5 to SRA3 sheet sizes. Each collated set is fed into the booklet maker by hand, the machine takes over and the set is jogged from both sides, stapled and folded. The HCS staple heads produce a pro-

clench flat clenched staple finish. Optional front edge trimmer and also online squarefold units are available. The company is the last remaining quick printer located in the city’s old town “We have a wide range of customers including public services, schools, large and smaller local companies and the public. Our aim is to print on our Konica AccurioPress C3080 and Xerox Versant 80 digital printers and finish high quality booklets as fast as possible to meet the delivery requirements of our clients. One of our major clients requires a wide variety of booklets and we can easily adjust the sizes.” “Ashgate gave us on-site training and are always there if we require them. We can’t fault their service over the years. The new machine has settled in quickly and if it lasts another twenty plus years, we will be delighted.” www.ashgate.co.uk

EPSON PARTNERS WITH INDIRA FLACK Epson has announced it is the exclusive print and technology partner for photographer, Indira Flack’s new Great British Racing Drivers (GBRD) exhibition. The new photographic exhibition can be viewed at the recently opened Silverstone Experience — a new £20 million experiential and education centre focused on the British Motor Sports industry. GBRD features a unique collection of nearly 90 new portraits celebrating the lives and successes of the United Kingdom’s most inspirational and talented racing drivers from karting to F1 – past, present and future. Says Indira Flack: “I am incredibly proud to have finally launched this exciting new collection. It is the result of many years’ work, travelling up and down the UK — photographing some of our most iconic sporting heroes and stars of the future. Each portrait was shot in a setting and location that both link to their individual motorsport story or illustrates their personalities ‘away from the track’, to show a character that is proud of, but not solely defined by the sport they love.” Indira says all of these legends and rising stars of motorsport – from Stirling Moss to Lando Norris, Jenson Button to Jamie Chadwick and so on – have been photographed many times throughout their careers and many more times since, so the idea was to take a new, creative approach to their portraits. The key to this was to find new ways to accentuate their expressions and personality through the imaginative use of angles, lighting as well as dynamic colour management in the photographic print production process. Continues Indira: “I hope when you stand back and look at the prints on show at the exhibition,

4

they have all captured a genuinely unique aspect of some of the most celebrated sports people in the world. Epson’s technology and technical assistance in the photographic print production process was so very critical to achieving this, as I was able to seamlessly marry the purity of each captured shot and the final creative outcome I had for it my mind. We used an Epson SureColor P20000 to print the photographs for the exhibition. The result is a portfolio that I am very proud of and reflects some of the best and most ambitious work I have done.” The Epson SureColor P20000 combines new super fast printing speeds with the same superior

quality, the SC P10000 and SC P20000 are ideal for creating accurate, precise large format photos, point of sale items, signage and much more. Using the latest camera controlled paper stabiliser, in conjunction with a new MicroTFP printhead, the SC P20000 delivers precise, professional quality prints at high speeds. For outstanding colour reproduction, a new UltraChrome Pro 10 colour ink set consistently delivers fantastic looking prints. Blacks are also deeper and richer thanks to new high density photo and matte black inks. A new printhead structure also means fewer vibrations, and more accurate ink droplets and dot placement. To ensure consistency without the need for expensive add-ons, the Epson Colour Calibration utility means users can easily manage their colour reproduction. Says Nick White, Business Manager, Professional Graphics, Epson: “We are so very pleased to have been involved in a project of this calibre and commend Indira for such an ambitious undertaking. Indira has all the characteristics of a great Epson Ambassador and customer – someone who aims to ‘exceed their vision’ and is constantly pushing themselves to redefine their creativity without compromising on the quality of the end product in the process. Using the right photographic printing equipment is also critical to delivering this and as the market leader in the high end photographic and fine art reproduction market, we at Epson have both the knowledge and the technology to help these artists bring their creative concepts to life.” *The GBRD exhibition is supporting Race Against Dementia by donating 10% of all print sales to the charity. **Admission to the GBRD Exhibition is included in Silverstone Experience entry price. NORTHEND STREAMLINES FINISHING WITH HORIZON Sheffield full service print provider Northend is the second UK operation to install the Horizon StitchLiner MKIII with the new VAC-L600H tower collators. The investment was made to streamline production at the newly formed operation created by the merger of Northend Creative Print Solutions (CPS) and My Print Partners (MPP) in April last year. The merger was completed through De Lisle Holdings which is 50% owned by MPP production director Richard Green and sales director Ian McCloskey and 50% by Northend CPS managing director Nigel Stubley. There are 45 employees at the £5m turnover firm and it produces offset work on a quick drying Ryobi 920 LED UV five colour press and digital print on a Ricoh Pro C9100 and a Ricoh Pro C7100. “We took six months after the merger to review operations and see where investment needed to be made,” explains Richard Green. “Our Muller Martini binding line was getting old and taking longer to make ready. The StitchLiner MKIII was the perfect solution. It ran quicker, was faster to set up improving planning and also used a smaller sheet size on magazines resulting in 10% savings on some paper.” Northend’s 6,000 sheets per hour system includes the new high capacity VAC-L600H collators and their 130mm deep trays. They are more than double the depth of the 55mm trays on 10 station collators. This equates to 2.3 times less down time for loading and greater uptime. The new collators can handle a wider range of substrates enabling greater flexibility and their intelligent operation allows them to feed digital work that has been printed `in page order’. It also has the option of ultrasonic detection and a double length delivery stream. “When we did the first demos it completed five jobs in a couple of hours, previously one job took three hours on its own. The fact we no longer have to

Pictured: Daniel Littlewood, operator (left) and John Marples, production manager, with the new StitchLiner MKIII

fold sections saves us a lot of time freeing up capacity. It also helps us get the jobs out the door faster.” The decision to invest in the StitchLiner was based on previous experience with Horizon solutions and working with IFS. Green says: “We have had Horizon systems before. In fact a Horizon SPF-FC200a was one of the few systems we moved to the new business. We know they can complete high quality work reliably and consistently with maximum uptime. We also know and trust IFS. When it came to replacing the Muller Martini we wanted something to match that and the StitchLiner was ideal. “We have a monthly job that was taking 20 hours to finish. The new StitchLiner will take just five. That showed us just how much of an impact it would have on other jobs. It will give us some production space and allow us to reduce overtime.” www.ifsl.uk.com

PAPERGRAPHICS’ DIGIMURA HELPS THE ULSTER MUSEUM Papergraphics has supported its customer Minprint and its MAD Creative team to help The Ulster Museum in Northern Ireland tell a visual and eye-catching story to its visitors through its decorative wallcovering designs. Managed by National Museums Northern Ireland, The Ulster Museum takes guests on a tour of the history of Northern Ireland and beyond. With stunning portrait exhibitions, modern culture references as well as exhibits from across the globe, including Egyptian mummies and dinosaurs. It is a diverse space, with intriguing exhibits that needs to appeal to a broad spectrum of visitor. During the summer, the museum installed two new exhibitions. The first was titled, “The Art of Selling Songs” which told the story of modern music from the area. The second, “Vice Versa” a fashion exhibition highlighting how male and female dress trends have influenced each other through time. These new displays required new artwork that had to fit with the theme and be visually engaging and this is where Minprint and MAD Creative were able to help. Design, print and display expert, Minprint has been using Papergraphics print solutions for a number of years. When Minprint and the MAD

Creative team were approached for this project and started creating ideas, it became obvious that Papergraphics new Digimura-1 one piece wallcovering was the way to go. “We already supply the National Museums

of Northern Ireland with a range of print and installation services from vinyl, to prop/exhibit creation, light boxes and other bespoke items,” explains Jamie McMinnis, Managing Director at MAD Creative. “These two new exhibitions required a range of print and installation solutions including covering large areas with seamless high quality graphics and we chose to use Papergraphics Digimura-1 to cover these areas. The quality of the print and durability of the material gave us the right solution for an impactful and reliable display.” In the following months, The Ulster Museum asked MAD Creative to use the Digimura-1 in two other areas of the museum, one in their café area, covering a long wall with an historic image of the Museum; and the other in their Egyptian Mummy exhibition. The decision to use the Papergraphics Digimura-1 wallpaper was simple for Minprint. They were able to print the graphics in one seamless piece without joins but it was also a solution that visitors could not pick at or damage, ensuring it would last for a long period of time. It’s also a durable material so would withstand any knocks or scrapes. www.paper-graphics.com

ANTALIS TO OFFER UNIVERSAL CARBON OFFSETTING Antalis UK has announced that all material purchased from across its papers, packaging and visual communications ranges can now be carbon offset, with some paper ranges already supplied as fully carbon balanced. As public support to address climate change gathers, businesses are increasingly looking at what more they can do to operate sustainably. With this in mind, Antalis has taken steps to update its carbon offset schemes to ensure that it can serve the needs of interested customers and help them achieve their environmental ambitions. Working together with partners from Forest Carbon and World Land Trust, Antalis is able to calculate the kilograms of carbon emissions it takes to procure any material type including plastics, aluminium composite material and nylon. These carbon credits can be purchased by customers to support the creation of new UK woodlands (via Forest Carbon and the Antalis Woodlands) or to preserve global forests (via Forest Carbon in South America; or a World Land Trust project in Vietnam). Customers also have the choice to support a blend of all three options. Antalis’ partner Forest Carbon leads the way in voluntary carbon woodland creation in the UK and abroad. Since 2006 it has planted more than eight million trees in the UK, and a further 2.5 million overseas, equating to the removal of

over 2.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. In collaboration with World Land Trust, through their Carbon Balanced Paper scheme, Antalis is enabling its customers to balance the unavoidable carbon emissions of paper-based products. The money raised supports World Land Trust projects in Vietnam, one of the most biologically diverse countries on Earth. To date, 16,000 acres of standing forest at threat of clearance has been protected – the equivalent of 9,080 football pitches. World Land Trust has enabled approximately 169,000 tonnes of carbon emissions

SL GRAPHICS WINS IPA AWARD SL Graphics has won a prestigious award for an innovative project that combined HP Scitex UV-curable ink technology with HP Latex inks, using a recently installed HP Latex 1500. Large format print specialist SL Graphics was founded in Dublin 20 years ago, steadily expanding with new technology investments and, ten years ago, a move to new premises. Around eight years ago it installed an HP Scitex FB500 UV printer, shortly followed by an HP Scitex FB700. SL Graphics has always relied on HP printing technology — installed by HP supplier Diatec — to win valuable clients including nearby Dublin Airport, for whom SL Graphics produces a range of advertising and retail work such as backlit posters. At the start of 2019 Diatec recommended SL Graphics replace a solvent printer with a new HP Latex 1500 3.2m wide printer, an investment that paid off in the form of a win at the Irish Print Awards 2019.

6

The judges recognised the ingenuity of SL Graphics in an office refit project for blue chip client Deloitte, which combined HP Latex and Scitex UV inks on transparent vinyl and awarded the company the title of Bespoke Large Format Digital Printer of the Year. The black tie awards ceremony took place on November 29th, 2019. “Many of our competitors were large companies so it was nice for a smaller outfit to be recognised in the IPAs,” says Dave Savage, Director, SL Graphics. “We had a great night and even did a little dance on the stage when we collected our trophy.” www.slgraphics.ie

to be absorbed every year, whilst also protecting 41 threatened, endangered and critically endangered wildlife species. Matthew Botfield, CSR Manager at Antalis, stated: “Sustainability is at the heart of what we do. Every day, we are working towards reducing our own environmental footprint while also providing innovative solutions to our customers. Antalis is proud to support customers in offsetting their own carbon emissions and to give them clear choices in support of UK or global schemes. For example, here in the UK customers can choose to plant trees, maximising their own social media and marketing opportunities. “Both our schemes are backed up with relevant certificates and logos to help them reassure their customers that they are operating as sustainably as possible.” www.antalis.co.uk

LIQUID LENS COMPLETE DOMED LABEL PRODUCTION Liquid Lens, the UK leader for quality doming resin, doming technology and domed label production, has announced the availability of a broad range of end to end domed label production solutions. The solutions include complete full colour label production systems for either indoor or outdoor use with integrated cutting capabilities or separate cutter and the Liquid Lens Label System best suited to the required volumes. Liquid Lens Managing Director, Steve Hastie, comments, “The key to our production systems is the sheer quality of the mercury free resin we use for the domed labels. It is far superior to any other resin in the market and this means our customers are demanding more and more labels. We produce hundreds of thousands of labels each week from our own production centre and this continues to be a major part of our business. However, increasingly we are finding more and more customers are identifying the financial and operational benefits of taking their domed label production in-house and we are delighted to provide them a fantastic solution that is optimised to their specific requirements.” The Liquid Lens Label Systems range from an entry level solution designed for the daily production of 1 to 500 labels, through to the Label System 750 capable of producing many thousands of outdoor durable domed labels every day. Each solution includes a digital inkjet printer, a cutter (or integrated print and cut machine), from premium manufacturers such as Canon, Graphtec, Mimaki or Roland, together with a specialist doming machine.

Liquid lens will work with customers to determine the correct configuration to suit each company’s current and future requirements. Resin Quality — Liquid Lens is the only global supplier of its automotive production grade polyurethane resin in easy to use cartridge format. This resin is demonstrably superior to other products in the market. Hastie explains, “Our resin is very easy to use and apply, cures quickly and provides a consistent and reliable finish. Our resin always delivers a smooth, resilient surface, compared to many other resins, which are often rough or sticky to touch. This is because our

resin, which always fully closes, comes from one of the world’s largest and best manufacturers of polyurethane resin.” He concludes, “Don’t take our word for it! We invite anyone to compare the quality of our resin in a huge range of applications, including domed labels, number plate gel characters and advertising, digital mosaics and more. Ours is the only cartridge resin with a 12-month shelf life guarantee, which makes us the industry’s largest supplier of cartridge resin and the best source for reliable, high quality doming resin.” www.liquid-lens.com

ROLAND SF-200 FOR SENSITIVE APPLICATIONS Roland DG EMEA has launched the SF-200, the world’s first desktop eco-solvent printer developed for sensitive applications including toys, food containers and medical instruments. The SF-200 runs highly durable yet safe inks, that retain their vibrancy and image quality while meeting standards for safety. The desktop system can accommodate objects and media up to 538mm x 360mm and up to 100mm in height, with extensive material compatibility ranging from ABS, PVC, TPU, PET, PP and PPMA to wood, aluminium, glass and leather (1.) This makes the printer perfect for highly specific print requirements, whether the user wishes to print a unique full colour design or piece of text directly to a single object or several items at once. Compliance and safety — Thanks to compliance with the EN 71-3 toy safety standard and the Toy Safety Directive (2), SF-200 eco-solvent inks are compatible with children’s toys made from plastics, wood, leather and more — with designs able to withstand the roughest games. Similarly, the SF-200 is ideal for both manufacturers of food containers and retailers, who can use the system to offer personalised lunchboxes, drinking bottles and travel mugs to their customers. In the medical sector, the new Roland SF-200

(2) Certification of the printed product is not guaranteed. It is the responsibility of the user printing the product to gain any certifications required and to bear the cost of any certification process. BOXMART PROUD TO BE ‘MADE IN THE UK’ As the provenance of products becomes increasingly important to socially conscious consumers, leading gift box and packaging specialist BoxMart is proud to be ‘Made in the UK’. Concerns such as carbon emissions from manufacturing, the environmental impact of international shipping and unethical working conditions in some countries are all front of mind for today’s shoppers, which consequently makes the issue of product origin and provenance hugely important to retailers aiming to improve their social responsibility, and deliver products – and packaging – that taps into consumer trends and habits. “More consumers are turning to home grown retailers as they look to play their part in the on-going fight against climate change and ensure that the ethical standards of their chosen brands conform to their own principles,” said Jo Offord, Managing Director of BoxMart. “The knock on effect can immediately be recognised with start ups and online retailers in particular using their social responsibility credentials as a marketing tool. Putting these important messages front and centre gives companies a vital edge as they fight for space and attention in a fiercely competitive retail sector.” It is with that in mind that BoxMart supplies a range of recyclable gift boxes to businesses in an assortment of shapes, sizes, colours and finishes, all with the common thread that they are made in the United Kingdom. “We’re really proud that all of our gift boxes are made in the UK,” says Jo. “Obviously this supports the British manufacturing sector and our economy, but it also vastly reduces the number of ‘packaging miles’ and carbon emissions associated with transporting our boxes.” The BoxMart range of high quality off the shelf giftbox designs can be easily customised with ribbons, tissue and shred to create a unique opening experience, while meeting the consumer’s specific needs in terms of packaging provenance and environmental impact. This in turn means brands benefit not just from the initial sale but also from fostering loyalty and building

10

a trusting relationship with the consumer. “As well as our packaging solutions being made in the UK, BoxMart also specialises in flat-packed packaging,” said Jo. “In fact, most of our off the shelf boxes are designed this way. The ability to transport boxes to our customers like this means that we aren’t shipping fresh air around the country, which is a huge benefit of choosing us as an eco-friendly supplier.” BoxMart offers a high quality, instantly available range of boxes in small and large quantities. Available in a multitude of colours and sizes, the boxes are designed to add extra value to both retail and e-commerce purchases, while an extensive choice of tissue and shred filling options can ensure a great unboxing experience for customers without breaking the bank. www.boxmarttps.co.uk • www.boxmart.co.uk

SOLOPRESS EXPANDS ROLLER BANNER RANGE Southend based print firm Solopress has extended its roller banner range to include three new models, all aimed at the higher end of the market. Solopress already ships over 1000 units per week from their existing range of economical pull-up displays, but the firm has now launched three new lines of high performance roller banners. Their plan is to capture the imaginations of B2B customers, as Managing Director Simon Cooper explains: “While we’re proud to offer some of the most affordable roller banners on the market, we identified an appetite among our business customers for a more sophisticated product. We scoured the market for products that would express more aspirational design and performance values. The range our team has sourced fits those needs perfectly.” The product team at Solopress were keen that new lines should exceed their existing models in terms of looks, performance and durability. The three new additions are called the ‘Talent’, the ‘Trend’ and the ‘Style’. Product Category Owner Jake Booth had the task of searching through the base units on the market to discover which products would ultimately make the cut. “Once we got in a room with the units, it became clear which three were the winners. Just from the look and feel of the bases, the ease of use, even the smoothness of the cassette mechanisms, the ‘Talent’, ‘Trend’ and ‘Style’ models stood apart.” Solopress’ new flagship model, the ‘Style’ weighs in at a reassuring 7kg, so it’s certainly a substantial piece of kit. It’s ideal for a semi-permanent display, but if you do need to take it on the road, it comes with a heavy duty, structured carry case with handles and a strap. At the lighter end of the scale is the ‘Talent’. At 5.6kg it’s hefty enough not to get knocked around, but the unique selling point for this unit is the low banner feed opening. This feature means the printed area extends almost all the way down to floor-level. The result is a display that literally puts the message to the fore.

12

In between the two is the ‘Trend’, a good looking unit in understated black and chrome which, like the ‘Style’, has adjustable feet to cope with uneven surfaces. At 6kg it falls straight down the middle of the range in terms of weight as well as price point. And of course, the one element that all of these units can’t be without is the printed banner. Solopress run not one, but two Agfa Anapurna H2500i LED hybrid wide format presses running 24-hours a day, six days a week. That means there’s plenty of capacity for fast turnaround on all wide format print – including these all-new roller banners! www.solopress.com

PRINTOLOGY: THE APPLIANCE OF SCIENCE

Not a word Martin Christie has used before, but printology exists, and perhaps it should be used more often in our working environment. He doesn’t know who came up with it, or why, but it seems to be defined as the convergence of operational technology with sophisticated machines that produce and/or manage documents. For him that’s a bit more realistic than print facilitators as we were once characterised, making us sound like just some convenient go-between.

T

he trouble is that’s just what we have become in the eyes of many customers, empowered with their mobile phones and tablets, and failing to appreciate that turning their electronic creations into hard print requires a little more expertise than that of just pressing a button. Printology, as I understand it, implies the matching of some practical traditional skills with the technical knowledge of the new digital software and hardware; a knowledge that’s under continual development. A printologist needs to be both an IT specialist and a hands on mechanic to handle intelligent devices alongside nut and bolt working machines. Oh, and an ability to mindread and second-guess customers requirements also comes in handy. We know this because it is why it’s so difficult to find and train staff. I’ve said before that more needs to be made of the printing process to raise its public profile. So why not flag up printology? After all, if an ad for sofas can claim an ‘ology for simply designing something to recline on, and baking cakes can draw a television audience bigger than an Olympic sport, turning a series of mathematical equations into something magically real deserves a little more recognition. It is a modern irony that the popular media raises comparatively simple things into major operations, while more complex and creative ones are allegedly made more simple by buying the appropriate gadget. So you can reinvent the whole history and tradition of photography simply by buying the latest phone and it will do all the marvellous complicated stuff for you. In fact, when you have your own personal drone at your service you won’t even need to leave that comfy sofa, it will go out on its own and bring you back a full pictorial record of all the things you might have done with your life. And not just would-be photographers because we also have chefs and hairdressers who think they are designers with the help of a little app on their mobile, while we would never presume to cook a full course meal for a restaurant, or bleach someone’s blonde roots. No - it’s time for customers to be made 14

…it’s time for customers to be made aware that there is something more scientific in this application of technology than opening a file and pressing print. aware that there is something more scientific in this application of technology than opening a file and pressing print. That’s if they want anything more than a no frills, get-what-you-got service with no personal professional attention required. But there is barely a job these days that is that simple that doesn’t need some adjustment. Usually it’s a matter of printing being a shade or two darker than expected from being viewed on a bright screen, so it’s a matter of common practice to set the printer up to print ten per cent lighter by default. But anything more complicated does require a technician with at least some level of skills who understands that it’s a little more complicated than just taking a little red out as might have been in copy shop days. So, here is where the science comes in. We are printing with composite inks, whether toner or inkjet, so every hue is made up by variations of the mixture of those basic inks, not the solidly defined colours that appear to be displayed on the screen. So to make any changes in colour you need to alter the colour information in the file, or the colour profile you are sending to the printer. You can do both but there is a real danger that you will go round in circles chasing your tail and end up back where you started from. Better to keep one standard and alter the other. And while all printers have a good number of choices of colour profiles for different paper stock, it is better to keep with a consistent one and make alterations to the file because that it the thing you are looking at on the monitor. Current photo editing software is immensely powerful and that’s where the professional studio has the advantage over the phone app operator because you are able to access tools beyond the amateur budget or skill. I’m

referencing Adobe’s flagship products but all top edit suites will have very similar ways of manipulating the appearance of pixels because the basic adjustments are common to all digital files. The only qualification is that working with RAW camera files or TIFFs with 16-bit colour information will give you a lot more to play with than JPEGs, for example, that are only 8-bit and will have had some pre-processing already. Photoshop has come a long way in the last twenty years, and while it retains a lot of the familiar working tools in the workspace, for exposure, colour balance and the like, it now has a much more subtle and intelligent selection hidden in Filter>Camera RAW. These can be used on any RGB photofile not just those unprocessed ones. The disadvantage of Photoshop is that you are working on one file at a time, and that it is destructive to the original image unless you are careful to create a copy. So if you are working on a number of files, particularly if they are all similar, much better to use Lightroom where the workspace has been specifically pruned down for photographic purpose. If you are used to Photoshop, its working practice takes a little getting used to which is why a lot of people may shy away from it. But although it is designed primarily for digital photographers, it is not just for visual display, and the tools available for print adjustment are extremely comprehensive, so it is well worth making the effort to get to know it especially as, if you have the Creative Cloud subscription, you are paying for it anyway. It also comes together with Photoshop in the cheaper Photography option. Instead of opening just one file, you can import a whole load into an initial library to view, select and then move to Develop where FEBRUARY 2020 • QUICK PRINT PRO

you can begin the magic. When completed you can move on to Print when you can sort the layout including multiple options, or just export the finished item as a new file. In this way, Lightroom is non-destructive, because you are not affecting the original, and you can even make an additional Virtual Copy if you want to make additional edits to compare, or extra copies to print. Another useful feature is that the edit history is retained after closure of the program so when you open up you can start again or go back and start again. A dual display can show you the original file so you can compare and contrast any changes you have made. This feature is also available in Photoshop Camera Raw, but again you can only handle one image at a time. Lightroom enables you to romp through a pile of images even if each requires different edits and the ability to move back and forth with the different files available as thumbnails in addition to the main image makes for a very efficient workflow. If you are using two monitors, you can take advantage of a secondary display which can reproduce a number of the viewing options, including the full grid or the comparison one. Any number of on-line tutorials will help you with all of the functions available. Although inevitably most are directed towards web use rather than specifically for print, the adjustments are just as valid for hard copy as well as screen. In the Develop mode the tools column starts with the basic white balance which can adjust the overall temperature of the image, which may be needed depending on the time of day a photograph was taken for example. Most people will rely on an automatic camera setting, especially on a phone, so the odds are this will need some attention. Next comes the adjustment of basic exposure and contrast but as well as that you can dig deeper into the pixels to lift shadows, reduce highlight and tune both the white areas and the blacks. Then there are some recent additions in the block titled Presence, where texture and clarity can be added as well as dehaze to pull out detail in washed out areas, or even reduce it if it is too much. These toggles can be played with to achieve best results and again having a before and QUICK PRINT PRO • FEBRUARY 2020

after image to compare is very useful. In all of the sliders, a double click on the toggle returns them to their middle setting, or if you want to adjust in more subtle increments, placing your pointer on the slider will enable you to use the up and down keys on the keyboard. Vibrance and Saturation are fairly self explanatory. Digital images tend to print quite vibrantly anyway so to avoid exaggerating colours, especially skin tones, you may want to back off a notch or two. The Tone Curve is essentially the same as in Photoshop, with Red, Green and Blue channels but with the addition that you can adjust the curves by moving the pointer across the image, giving you a very precise option of correction. Sliders below the Curve histogram display also show how adjustment is affecting the light and dark areas of the image so you can trace exactly how a move will affect the overall appearance. Then we come to the HSL colour sliders, probably one of the least explored parts of the program, and yet one of the most useful in its function of adjusting each of the aspects of colour contained in the image. The letters stand for Hue, Saturation and Luminance. Photoshop users will be familiar with the basic adjustment tool, but Lightroom takes fine-tuning to a whole new level by being able to separate the three aspects in detail. Hue is the actual colour of any particular pixel or item in an image, Saturation is the intensity of that colour, and Luminance is the reflected brightness of it. That’s why these tools are really useful for print processing because it is reflected colour that we are ultimately dealing with rather than a backlit display. Of course any colour other than a spot colour is made up of proportions of different hues, and as we are printing with composite colours anyway, the interaction between them has a major effect on the output. In Lightroom, you can have all of the HSL sections open at the same time and each has a button in the top left of its box which will select an active pointer that can be rolled over any colour in the image to make adjustments. Hovering over a colour will select the hue for example and moving the pointer can increase or reduce its intensity and so on. That’s why manipulating all three can complement the resulting output, and hopefully help sort out those awkward colours long before it wastes paper printing. This is editing that needs a big screen, and quite a bit of practice and expertise to match the performance of the visual software with the production of hard copy print. It’s a specialist job so why not give it a special name. Printology sounds as good as any!

3D PRINTING

NOT JUST A SOLUTION, IT’S A TOOL… By Paul Heiden, Senior Vice President Product Management, Ultimaker

T

he manufacturing sector is used to the term additive manufacturing, or 3D printing — it’s not a new concept. What is new, is that 3D printing is no longer only a niche technology limited to the role of rapid prototyping; today, it has evolved into a practical tool that can be fully integrated into the broader production process to deliver a wider range of efficiency and efficacy benefits to assist the production lines of numerous manufacturing enterprises.

Erroneously, adopting and integrating 3D printing is often considered a challenge. Designers typically still begin creating product plans with a specific material and a specific production method in mind, without considering 3D printing. But rather than discounting the technique as it’s one many feel they have yet to master, it’s time that we actually look upon 3D technology and realise its potential as another strong ‘business as usual’ production method, alongside the traditional

injection moulding and milling methods commonly used today. In order to accelerate the world’s transition to digital distribution and local manufacturing, 3D printing needs to be easy, reliable and accessible. It now is. It has the potential for its users to take their designs and applications >>>

TOTAL SIGNS AND GRAPHICS INVEST WITH I-SUB Total Signs and Graphics has invested in an Agfa Anapurna H2500i LED UV printer and a Blackman & White Genesis V digital cutting system from expert wide format system supplier i-Sub Digital, in an investment made several years ahead of schedule owing to ‘a happy push’. James Cody, Operations Director at Total Signs and Graphics, explains that the Grimsby business had planned to expand production with a new Agfa Anapurna printer in around five years. But when additional floorspace became available at the same time as one of its major customers, a garden centre chain, expanded to become one of the largest in the UK, Total Signs stepped on the accelerator. “We’ve always had a strong relationship with the garden centre company and when it went national there was potential for us to grow with them,” he says. “However, there was no way we could do it without new a printer - it simply wasn’t possible to complete the work in the required time scale.” Total Signs took delivery of the Agfa Anapurna in August 2019, giving it the ability to print onto a wide range of uncoated rigid and roll media for indoor and outdoor applications at high speeds. The new Agfa is the first UV printer for the graphics and signage business, which had formerly used only solvent systems. In turn, however, the faster turnaround enabled by adding the Agfa Anapurna to the newly expanded premises created a bottleneck in the finishing department. Total Signs again contacted i-Sub to discuss its needs, and doubled its investment with the purchase of a Blackman & White Genesis-V digital cutting system soon after. Blackman & White is the UK’s only manufacturer of cutting machines, designing and building its exceptional quality systems at its factory in Essex. In late 2019 i-Sub became the UK exclusive dealer of the Blackman & White range, including the Genesis-V digital cutting system with its interchangeable router, laser and knife tools. Armed with its new equipment, Total Signs and Graphics could immediately take on more projects for its garden centre client. “From mid-July until late November we had a team of two installing internal and external signs and graphics, all printed on the Agfa, at branches all around the country,” says James Cody. “We then a won a further POS job ahead of Christmas: producing shelf strips for tens of thousands of products. There was no way we could have done that by hand - it was all done on the Blackman &

18

White Genesis-V.” Emma Plant, Sales Director at i-Sub, comments: “We were delighted that Total Signs and Graphics invited i-Sub to work with them and guide them to the best solution for their new printer and finishing requirements. They are a very forward-thinking business which was demonstrated by their decision to fast-forward their initial five-year investment plan into new technology to grow the business and ensure their client’s needs were met. whilst offering the best quality products and service available. “The Agfa Anapurna printer and Blackman & White cutter also offer peace of mind for future growth as both machines have the capacity for further production. In turn this ensures Total Signs not only have the confidence to take on more business and win new work but also that they have the security of knowing deadlines and expectations will be easily achieved using the latest technology available.” James adds: “Our customer’s growth gave us a happy push to bring our investment schedule forward five years. The Anapurna and Genesis-V have made a massive difference that means we can now enter new markets and employ two new members of staff. www.i-subdigital.com

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT >>to a new level of quality and consistency, with greater flexibility, efficiency and confidence. The key is to overcome the perceived barrier that the technique is complex and material options are limited: since its earliest conception, the technology has drastically evolved into an easy-to-use manufacturing process and today a wide range of materials are available for 3D printing through intense collaborations between manufacturers of 3D printing and leading material companies. The key is accessibility: a blend of hardware and software is essential and working with predefined printing profiles is fundamental in an efficient work environment. In the early days, it took for instance a lot of time to find the correct print settings, which include flow rate, print speeds, layer size, temperatures, etc. It took much experimentation, skill and patience to gradually identify the best settings through trial and error - and a lot of wasted filament. Today, things are so much easier. Rather than manually tweaking over 350 + printer settings, which could take material manufacturers up to six months to put together, today’s print

profile assistant software enables everybody to create base profiles for end users in only a few weeks. This process unlocks new applications, as end users are no longer limited by material availability and can readily adopt new materials and design formats. Moreover, this allows products to be produced close to home, rather than outsourced to or shipped from another country, and makes the designs digitally distributable — speeding up the supply chain process. The ability for more businesses to affordably disrupt markets with  rapidly developed, locally manufactured parts and models, makes 3D printing so desirable today. With the latest technology innovation, designed and tested for unattended use, engineers can design, test, and produce models and custom end-use parts with the widest range of materials for their manufacturing needs. They can reliably manufacture smaller parts and models as part of an organisation wide production process, while today’s price point has removed the barrier to entry for prototyping or production line innovators — as well as SMEs - to make

the initial business case for 3D printing. Now, anyone who wants to start leveraging a powerful 3D printing solution can do so and make full use of the wide array of materials  with  print profiles  available in the marketplace today.  3D printing has the potential to fully integrate in the modern day production line as a ‘business as usual’ tool, while also presenting huge opportunities in new and emerging markets. The ability for designers to be able to quickly and cost effectively print accurate, high quality prototypes is invaluable. But, to integrate such technology and encourage it to become a standard method of production is what is now so easily achievable. The potential of 3D technology and the ease of its production capabilities is set to revolutionise traditional manufacturing processes; as we move towards a close to home, just in time and digitally distributed model, it is those organisations who have adopted 3D printing at the core of their production facility that will gain the upper hand. www.ultimaker.com

PRINTED.COM DEVELOP WITH HP Printed.com says it is looking forward to expanding its product line and reaching new customers in 2020, following the installation of a third HP digital printer in 2019. A new HP Latex R2000 was installed at Printed.com’s Northumberland premises in July by HP supplier Papergraphics. The R2000 goes hand in hand with Printed.com’s fleet of digital presses, all of which are key to an ever expanding range of printed products, from business cards through to leaflets, bound and stapled brochures, posters and display boards, wedding stationery, and many more in between, all delivered for a diverse market. “We have a very broad range of customers from small home based businesses to established chains and much larger corporate organisations, across a range of sectors including creatives, wedding stationers, retailers, charities, education, manufacturers, hospitality and more,” says David Duncan, Production Director, Printed. com. Printed.com also has a growing selection of wide format products, for which it chose the HP Latex R2000, a hybrid printer ideal for direct printing onto a range of rigid and flexible materials. The team initially saw it in action at FESPA, then conducted extensive tests on a demonstration model in the UK before making the final investment decision.

QUICK PRINT PRO • FEBRUARY 2020

David Duncan comments: “Having spent a significant amount of time reviewing the equipment available we chose the R2000 because it delivered what we believed to be the best quality output available. Print speeds are impressive and fit the profile of our workflow, the colour consistency across the range of product and stocks we produce is excellent, and the press has an effective front end for job layout and management. The R2000 was also delivered at a very competitive price against comparable devices in the market.” He adds: “Printing white ink is always a challenge on any device but the R2000 is producing some exceptionally high quality results for us. That coupled with the sheer flexibility of the press makes it an ideal addition

to our business. It has improved efficiency and increased capacity in our large format department.” The HP Latex R2000 is used to manufacture all Printed.com’s large format rigid board work on Foamex, foam core, Corex, 2mm card, Dibond and acrylic. “But we don’t intend to stop there as we believe there are many more substrates that the press will allow us to add to our range,” says David. Printed.com’s tagline is ‘Your Print, Your Way’ - an approach it intends to continue into 2020 with new products and the re-platforming and deployment of its on-demand print API, which will allow businesses to connect directly with Printed. com to create a full end-to-end solution. www.printed.com

ESSENTIALS OF PRINT

Digital Printing Driving Innovation in Textile Printing. Rob Gilboa examines the latest textile industry trends and examines the dynamics that digital innovations have on this massive industry supply chain, innovations in design and digital print.

F

or decades, digital printing for the fashion, décor, industrial, and graphics industry was relegated to sampling and short run printing. With the advantages of innovative inkjet technology, the industry is now addressing the demand for environmentally responsible output, innovative designs, and the need to improve supply chain operation. The Textile Transformation — Like many industries, the textile printing market has been changing to adopt new innovative technologies aimed at addressing a new generation of

22

consumers, brands, as well as the supply chain. This massive industry, with over a trillion and a half dollars in annual business value in the apparel and accessories sector, is undergoing a transformation. Brands must adjust to appeal to a new generation of consumers who shop in both brick and mortar stores as well as through online retailers. With the digital age now an economic certainty, brands as well as textile mills must adapt. Many of these changes have evolved in the past decade as early high speed production digital textile solutions emerged (1).

The changes are impactful in several key areas. Productivity — One of the largest areas in textile printing that has improved dramatically is the ability to produce just in time any length of fabrics or garments. With no cylinder or screen make ready, and with the advent of sophisticated workflow automation tools, textile mills can now produce any design rapidly — meeting the needs of designers and brands trying to meet the quick changeover in the fashion industry. Additionally, innovations in colour matching and design are revving up the creative process, shrinking creation time from months down to weeks to even just mere days. Creativity — In the textile space, improvements in productivity and simplified design have also translated to greater creativity. With the ability to produce single item runs, there is no mass production risk associated with taking new designers on. Many brands are allowing budding designers to enter the fray and compete for mind share and recognition. FEBRUARY 2020 • QUICK PRINT PRO

SHOWTIME

It is common place today to be able and order quarter yard of fabric from traditional textile mills or a new generation of mass customisation on-demand producers. Environment — Lastly, environmental sustainability continues to rise to the forefront of service provider responsibility. Research has repeatedly shown that younger generations — particularly Generation Z — prioritise sustainability when it comes to product selection. In many cases, this age group is willing to pay more for products that were created with sustainability in mind. For the textile industry, this means a change. For generations, textile manufacturers have been considered a large polluter, with 20% of waste water produced by textile mills globally. Optimising the supply chain — Now that we have broadly outlined the textile transformation and the factors driving it, we can more fully discuss just how the textile market is changing as digital fabric printing print volume continues to grow at 19% CAGR (reaching about four billion square metres in 2022). With productivity and creativity trends urging companies to adapt a more flexible production schedule that prioritises product diversity, it is only natural that improvements would come to the supply chain. Integration into Product Life Cycle Management (PLM) — When brands plan their next season, they usually resort to the QUICK PRINT PRO • FEBRUARY 2020

use of a Product Life Cycle Management system (PLM). These tools are aggregators of all the components needed to usher in a new successful season. From managing resources (ERP), design components, collection and ensembles, to patterns and product photography, these collaborative platforms enable all the functions and processes in the creation of next season’s products — a coordinated effort from brands, designers, textile mills, and cut and sew operations to the logistics that move products to shelves or ship them out in packages. Just-in-time manufacturing — While justin-time (JIT) manufacturing has technically been a term that has existed since the 1960s, it has grown in applicability in recent decades. JIT manufacturing allows new businesses to get their product lines to market in days or weeks, rather than months. For larger organisations, it can mean rapid response to the fashion industry needs to meet seasonal demand. Seasonal variations can be on shelves on time, giving textile companies better ability to please their customers. Digital printing: Reduction in overstock and warehousing — The shift toward digital printing can also mean improved inventory planning, resulting in less overstock and warehousing needs. As textile service providers move away from longer runs and shift toward short, varied, targeted production — they have been better able to match product to client need. Clothing can now be made as needed rather than in bulk order, letting companies spend less on inventory that may or may not sell. These capabilities ushered in a new type of fabric suppliers — On Demand manufacturers. These companies use a Purchase Activated Manufacturing business model, whereby production commence only once an order was received and paid for in advance. There are no finished goods in the warehouse just blank raw materials.

Rise of On Demand fabric manufacturing (Mass customisation) — With the supply chain being shortened using innovative print technology and continued advancements in workflow, new players have been entering the space over the last several years, empowered by easy online tools that make it simple to start selling customised clothing commercially. These fit into the growing uses of e-commerce in the apparel industry at large, where continued growth will drive estimated revenues up to $145 Billion by 2023 according to Statista 2018 digital market Outlook. Several suppliers epitomise this trend, pointing out the need for customisation for a community of like-minded people and, on a larger scale, addressing the needs of the masses with diverse customised products. Amazon (Merch) — Another powerful new tool is Amazon Merch. One of the largest online retailers in the world, Amazon realised the potential in digital printing many years ago when it started printing books on demand. Today, Amazon is an investor in companies such as Kornit, which supplies the company with Direct to Garment printers that enable Amazon Merch’s “print per buy” operation. No inventory, no risk of unsold inventory. Amazon offers its front-end infrastructure to entrepreneurs with designs and ideas and then provides the ability to benefit from Amazon backend infrastructure to get those ideas fulfilled. Its services support both independent designers as well as large-scale brands such as Disney and Marvel. Users of Amazon Merch also get to take advantage of Prime shipping, one of the leading shipping services in the US, as it has free twoday (and one-day) shipping services. That said, sellers on Amazon Merch will have to split their profits with Amazon, only earning a royalty with each sale. PRINT SHOW: CELEBRITY SPEAKER Organisers of The Print Show have announced British boxing legend Frank Bruno MBE as the first of three celebrity speakers for the 2020 edition of the UK’s leading print industry event. Frank is one of the most famous names in the history of British boxing, winning 40 of his 45 professional fights, 38 of which were via knockout. He fought some of the biggest names in boxing during his career, facing off against the likes of Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis and Joe Bugner. Frank’s biggest achievement in boxing came when he clinched the WBC World Heavyweight Championship against Oliver McCall in front of a packed crowd at Wembley Stadium in September 1995. Frank held the title until the following March, when, in his final professional bout, he was beaten

24

by Mike Tyson at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Since retiring from boxing, Frank has been involved in a wide range of projects, including several acting roles, voiceover work and writing a number of books. Frank is also heavily involved with charity work and has opened up

about his own experiences with mental health in an effort to help others in need. This led to him establishing The Frank Bruno Foundation, which promotes using exercise to help build a healthy mind. Boxing icons Tyson Fury and Ricky Hatton, as well as MMA star Michael Bisping, are among the ambassadors for the charity. Chris Davies, event director for The Print Show and co-located The Sign Show, said: “We are absolutely delighted to confirm Frank as our first celebrity speaker for the 2020 show. He is an absolute icon of British sporting history and to have him appear at The Print Show and The Sign Show, as well as meet with visitors, will be an incredible experience. “We’re currently in the process of selecting our other two celebrity

speakers for 2020 and will be making further announcements in due course, so watch this space!” Meanwhile, The Print Show and The Sign Show have published the full floorplan for the 2020 event, showcasing how the two events will be located inside one hall at the NEC in September. A number of companies have already booked their stands for The Print Show, with the likes of Vivid Laminating Technologies, Premier Paper, D&K Europe, The Magic Touch and Axzyra confirmed for 2020. “As we head into the New Year, we’re looking forward to announcing further additions to the floorplan, as we work to make the 2020 event our best ever,” Davies said. SOYANG ECO MEDIA HELP CHESTER ZOO

S

igns Express Chester took the franchise to the roman built city of Chester in 2012. Covering the areas around Chester, including Deeside, Frodsham and Ellesmere Port, the award winning branch is responsible for a large amount of the signage visible in the area, winning contracts with prominent companies and organisations. One such project is with Chester Zoo, which is the most visited zoo in the UK, as well as a conservation and education charity committed to preventing extinction. Chester Zoo is home to 27,000 animals across 125 acres of zoological gardens and boasts a whopping 1.9 million visitors each year. And with that kind of footfall, wayfinding and signage plays a critical role in the smooth running of the zoo and visitor satisfaction, so Chester Zoo teamed up with Signs Express Chester in order to deliver a first class zoo experience. “We began partnering with Chester Zoo in 2013,” says Signs Express Chester’s production manager, Tom Lloyd. “It started off as one banner and has grown from there, with Signs Express now their largest signage supplier. We cover everything from educational print by the habitats, to catering signage, wayfinding and cosmetic print to improve the overall appearance of areas of the zoo, including inside some of the habitats.” A key material that has been used throughout the zoo is the Endutex manufactured Terra Banner, distributed across the UK by Soyang Europe. In 2018, Chester Zoo signed up to become part of a plastic reduction scheme which had a big impact on the way they wanted to move forward with their print requirement. “As a conservation education charity, we’re always looking for new ways to reduce our footprint on the planet by ensuring the zoo is as sustainable as possible,” comments Fred Howat, senior exhibitions and interpretation officer at Chester Zoo. “This includes the signage, exhibition and marketing material we provide for our visitors across site. We’d been using PVC banners for some time as they were long lived and also met our budget requirements, however environmentally they didn’t meet our needs, so we began searching for a recyclable option.” “Through some searches and previous contact with Soyang Europe, we discovered the Terra Banner product, which aligned well with our requirements,” continues Howat. “Our close working relationship with Signs Express Chester allowed us to request they order some in for us to test. For us, those initial test banners proved a hit both in price and durability. They’re 26

lightweight, have great colour and clarity and are simple to install. They’ve since become our standard product for any banner requirements we have around the zoo, with PVC-based signage being gradually phased out.” As any printer will know, durability is one of the biggest concerns when producing print for outdoor environments, especially where signage is likely to be touched a lot by the public. “I can’t fault the Terra Banner for durability. Its longevity in the outdoor environment has exceeded anything else we’ve used,” maintains Lloyd. “We not only use it for signage, but it is even used as a print substrate for the games the rangers use when they work with young people to educate them about the importance of animal conservation. Its tenacity makes it an option for many out of the box applications.” Installing print on a regular basis at the zoo makes for a rich and diverse working environment for the Signs Express Chester team. “We have a great relationship with Chester Zoo and it’s quite a privilege to be up

close with the animals too,” describes Lloyd. “The giraffes are my favourite and there’s one in particular that always comes over to say hello when I’m installing near its habitat.” “The team recently installed EcoStick to the inside of the tortoise habitat glass, which roused some curiosity in the inhabitants,” Lloyd explains. “Thankfully when working in the tortoise habitat the only thing we have to worry about is how well the printed window film will hold up to scratches from their feet, but EcoStick lasts very well and gives a great finish. It is so easy to apply, which has its benefits, not only in getting the job done in good time, but when you’re applying it to the glass exterior of the lion habitat and you’ve got a male lion just inches away from you on the other side of the glass, I’m grateful for the briskness with which I can apply it!” “It’s been a wonderful opportunity to see how our environmentally friendly materials have been used in such an extraordinary environment,” comments Soyang Europe’s sales and marketing manager, Kerrie-Anne Moore. “Signage is such an important part of the visitor experience and we’re delighted to see how effectively Terra Banner and our other green materials are being used at Chester Zoo.” www.soyang.co.uk www.signsexpress.co.uk/branch/chester www.chesterzoo.org

COALA HELPS TO CREATE AN INTERIOR SANCTUARY Antalis Interior Design Award entry ‘Sanctuary House’ is a great example of how Coala large format digital media is helping printers and signmakers venture into new markets. An exclusive, contemporary, new build house project, entered into the Antalis Interior Design Awards for 2019, beautifully showcases the versatility of Antalis’ Coala range of large format digital media and the uniqueness it can give interior designs. The owner of Sanctuary House in Devon – which has expansive views over an estuary and nature reserve – is a keen amateur photographer and art collector. He approached Rob Otton, Managing Director at Exeter based Ashley House Printing Company, to create three important elements of the home’s interior decoration that would reflect these passions. Using scans of original artwork, Ashley House Printing’s design team carefully adapted the images to create large wall graphics, which were applied to Linvisible doors and surrounding wall areas to create contemporary art features. For the majority of doors, Rob selected Coala 2D gloss laminate, printed four colours, which was then laminated with Coala 2D matt laminate. For another feature door, Rob chose Coala 2D gloss white vinyl, printed four colours, and also laminated with Coala 2D matt laminate. For the main entrance and stairwell of the house, inspiration came from the owner’s nature reserve

photographs, with elements from different photos used to create a large frieze that adds texture to the bright and open space. The unusual effect was achieved by digitally cutting Coala Silky Wallcover Textile to create a relief image. As well as the owner being delighted with the result, Rob says it was a project that gave the team at Ashley House the chance to be a little more creative and experimental: “This was a very special project in an astonishing property. It really gave us the chance to show what we are capable of, and to try some techniques with substrates that we hadn’t used before. Coala tends to be our go-to range for large format digital and it certainly

helped us to produce some outstanding work for the client.” “This was our first private interior design project and is something we would certainly be keen to do again. The building’s architect was also ‘blown away’ by the designs and they are now looking to work with us to create similar graphic installations for future projects,” added Rob. Besides being entered into the Antalis Interior Design Awards, Sanctuary House is also in the running for a number of architectural awards. Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at FESPA in Madrid on 24th March. www.antalisinteriordesignaward.com

WORDS & SPACES DEFINES NEW PRODUCTION LANDSCAPE Isle of Man printer Words & Spaces has added landscape book production and streamlined operations with a Horizon SPF-200L bookletmaker from Intelligent Finishing Systems (IFS). The operation that produces work for a wide range of customers including Santander, Friends Provident, Isle of Man Post and Isle of Man Government, has a unique problem when it comes to outsourcing work - a long wait for anything that is sent to mainland UK. As a result, any investment made is done so based on today’s work demand with an eye on what tomorrow’s could be. Mark Green, managing director, explains: “It was time to upgrade our bookletmaker and we wanted the ability to offer landscape book production in house. Before, when we were asked for the service, it made sense to get it printed and finished off the Island but we wanted to be able to manage that ourselves.” The business runs a number of Horizon systems – a BQ270 perfect binder, a CRF-362 creaser/folder, and an AFC-566F folder. Mr Green continues: “We have always exalted Horizon products. We did look at a leading competitor’s offering but we are pretty loyal to Horizon. We also liked the Horizon SPF-200L’s landscape capabilities. It is something we can now proactively promote as a service that can be completed fully in-house and meet increasingly short turnaround times. “We also chose a third tower collator, a Horizon VAC-1000, and a Horizon ST40 stacker to help produce book blocks to feed the perfect binder. We can also now more easily handle grey boards for NCR jobs.” The 4,500bph Horizon SPF-200L landscape feed bookletmaker combines

stitching and folding with the ability to handle sheets up to 640mm in length. JDF-ready, it offers instant set-ups via a large icon based colour touchscreen for user friendly operation. The screen can be used for on the run fine tune adjustments as well as the storage and recall of up to 200 jobs. Mr Green concludes: “We are looking forward to being able to proactively sell landscape booklet production as well as enjoy the streamlining and capacity improvements enabled by the collator and the stacker. The overall investment will expand our service offering and make us more efficient.” www.ifsl.uk.com

CARD BUSINESS POPS FROM ACROSS THE POND Lovepop, a US-based 3D card company, is growing its high value print business as it moves to disrupt the industry thanks to in-house printing with HP Indigo digital presses. Headquartered in Boston, Lovepop prints their cards on an HP Indigo 5600 and an HP Indigo 5500r Digital Press at its production facility in Da Nang, Vietnam, where the presses started operating earlier this year. Founded by naval architects John Wise and Wombi Rose, Lovepop creates beautiful, laser cut pop-up cards designed with ship building software and handcrafted in the ancient fine art of sliceform kirigami. Lovepop’s hundreds of 3D designs are available online internationally at lovepop.com, Amazon, and retailers across the US. Before moving to the HP Indigo, Lovepop was using more than 50 desktop inkjet printers to print its products. “Acquiring the HP Indigo presses is enabling us to scale our business while bringing back in-house print work we had previously outsourced,” said Dariush Nejad, Research & Development Engineer at Lovepop. “HP Indigo digital printing is also a more sustainable, scalable solution, reducing waste by performing accurately with fewer errors than previous solutions.”

Lovepop ideates, designs, and handcrafts each Lovepop card with teams in Boston and Vietnam. John and Wombi chose to plant roots in both Boston, where they attended business school at Harvard, and Da Nang, where they first discovered kirigami and were inspired. “Together, HP and Lovepop are creating beautiful, laser cut paper art that inspires people to give, connect, and share magical moments,” added Wise, Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer. “As a fast growing business, the variety of resources and opportunities provided by HP gives us the confidence and reassurance we need to maintain this promising trajectory.” The 13 x 19 inch HP Indigo 5600 and the newer

model the HP Indigo 5900 are highly versatile printing presses for producing high value speciality jobs on a wide range of papers and synthetics using One Shot Colour printing mode for the gift card and membership card market. The range of media includes uncoated and coated papers as well as on unique substrates such as transparent, metallic, and recycled media, and paperboard for folding cartons. www.hp.com

ELANDERS ADDRESSES BINDING DEMAND WITH HORIZON Elanders has streamlined digital production and smoothed out workflow bottlenecks with investment in a perfect binding line from Intelligent Finishing Systems. The Newcastle litho and digital print specialist has invested in a Horizon BQ-480 four clamp perfect binder and a Horizon HT-80 three knife trimmer. Working inline the systems will complete fast turnaround short run digital work produced by three HP Indigos and some overspill work from the firm’s four Heidelberg offset presses. Explains Elanders Production Manager David Lewis: “We were managing an increasing amount of short run jobs and needed to invest in more perfect binding capabilities to meet our customer demands. We had two Horizon BQ-270s single clamp perfect binders and decided to replace one with the BQ-480. “We know how the Horizon systems run so it was an ideal solution to introduce. We just needed something to help us increase our ability to match the rise in volume of work.” The highly automated four clamp 800bph perfect binder enables quick set-up and a fast production speed for variable production. It features customised automated setup accounting for paper type, signature vs loose sheet, sewn book blocks, notch binding and other key factors

30

ensuring effort free high quality production. A rigid clamping system holds the book block firmly in position and a unique book delivery mechanism delivers the book gently for high quality books up to 65 mm. The HT-80 automated three knife trimmer features tailor made software, that helps minimise downtime at makeready, reduce waste, increase staff flexibility and allows constant job information management. Both are operated via a user friendly icon based colour touch screen and can store up to 200 jobs

for faster makereadies. As for the impact the new line has made, Lewis says: “We can complete our digital jobs much faster which means they can be finished efficiently and go straight out the door to the client. There is no need to move work around the plant and that saves us time and money. There is also a reduced need for overtime, and it has given us breathing space in scheduling. It has even increased our production capacity which would not have been possible before.” www.ifsl.uk.com

THE JOKE’S ON YOU

READERS’ SCRIBES

SOMETHING TO SHARE? LIMOUSINE DRIVER

Just spent £300 on a limousine and discovered that the fee doesn’t include a driver... Can’t believe I’ve spent all that money and have nothing to chauffeur it!

BALANCING THE ACCOUNT

In the days before calculators, accountants were frequently unable to get their debits to balance with their credits. So, in order to overcome the discrepancy, they often created a bogus account titled “Taste” to store the unbalanced amount and allow the books to balance. Unfortunately, the government soon heard of this practice and declared a new law... there would, from this point on, be no accounting for Taste.

TIPPING

A blackjack dealer and a player with a thirteen count in his hand were debating whether or not it was appropriate to tip the dealer. The player said: “When I get bad cards, it’s not the dealer’s fault. Similarly when I get good cards, the dealer isn’t responsible. So why should I tip him?” The dealer countered: “When you eat out, do you tip the waiter?” “Er, yes.” “Well, he serves you food, and I’m serving you cards, so you should tip me.” “Fair enough,” said the player, “but the waiter gives me what I ask for. I’ll take an eight...”

BEST SUIT

Bob meets Bill at the bar after work and is looking down in the dumps. “What’s wrong now Bob,” asked Bill. Bob replies, “They called in a management team and gave everyone in the office an aptitude test to see what they were best suited for.” “Yeah, so what’s the problem with that,” asks Bill. Bob sighs, “Well, it seems I’m best suited for unemployment.”

I saw a police officer dressed as a pilot today.

PERFECT WOMAN

A friend asked a gentleman how it is that he never married. The gentleman replied, “Well, I guess I just never met the right woman ... I guess I’ve been looking for the perfect girl.” “Oh, come on now,” said the friend, “surely you have met at least one girl that you wanted to marry?” “Yes, there was one girl once. I guess she was the one perfect girl, the only perfect girl I really ever met. She was just the right everything. I really mean that she was the perfect girl for me.” “Well, why didn’t you marry her?” asked the friend. “She was looking for the perfect man,” he said.

MILKING THE COW

A farmer was milking his cow. He was just starting to get a good rhythm going when a bug flew into the barn and started circling his head. Suddenly, the bug flew into the cow’s ear. The farmer didn’t think much about it until the bug squirted out into his bucket. It went in one ear and out the udder.

HEALTH ISSUES IN SPAIN

While on vacation in Spain with my wife, I I started to feel funny. I had some pain in my chest and felt short of breath. I chalked it up to the long day we had just had, but I continued to feel worse. As we got out of the taxi and walked into the hotel, I collapsed. It became apparent to my wife and I that I was having a heart attack. I thought for sure I would die because the nearest hospital was 1/2 hour away. Suddenly from the back room came a woman wielding defibrillators. She shouted to the other staff to help and they ripped off my shirt and restarted my heart right there in the hotel. The ambulance arrived 20 minutes later, but thanks to this amazing woman my life had been saved. I spent the night in the hospital but I got out around noon the next day. I went back to the hotel to thank this woman.

I thought it was weird.

I said, “I’m amazed that a hotel this small has a full time doctor as skilled as yourself!” She replied, “No one expects the Spanish Inn physician.”

FRIENDS DOWN UNDER

An undertaker can be one of your best friends. He’ll be the last one to let you down.

SMART DOG

Two dog owners were boasting about the intelligence of their pets. “The smartest dog I ever had,” said one, “was an amazing Afghan hound that could play cards. He was amazing at poker, he could beat anyone, even professionals. But I had to have him put down.” “You had him put to sleep?” said the other. “You must be crazy. A bright dog like that could be worth a million dollars.” “I had no choice. I caught him using marked cards.”

TOP DOG

A guy spots a sign outside a house that reads, “Talking Dog for Sale.” Intrigued, he walks in. “So what have you done with your life?” he asks the dog. “I’ve led a very full life,” says the dog. “I lived in the Alps rescuing avalanche victims. Then I served my country in Iraq. And now I spend my days reading to the residents of a retirement home.” The guy is flabbergasted. He asks the dog’s owner, “Why on earth would you want to get rid of an incredible dog like that?” The owner says, “Because he’s a liar! He never did any of that!”

PERSPECTIVE

A woman walks in a store to return a pair of eyeglasses that she had purchased for her husband a week before. “What seems to be the problem, madam?” “I’m returning these glasses I bought for my husband. He’s still not seeing things my way.”

Then I realised he must be one of those...

…plane-clothed cops!
