Morgana adds AeroCut Quatro Morgana Systems has announced the addition of the AeroCut Quatro to its range of multi-function finishing devices. The machine, manufactured by Uchida in Japan, provides for variable cutting, slitting and creasing of products, and includes a perforation module as standard. Capable of handling sheet sizes of up to 365 x 520mm in standard mode and 900mm in flexible mode, the AeroCut Quatro is able to produce a wide range of finished products from its pre-programmed templates or from bespoke templates for specific non-standard jobs. Ray Hillhouse, UK Sales Manager for Morgana, commenting on the addition of the AeroCut Quatro to the Morgana product range, said: “This machine sits alongside the already successful CardXtra and CardXtra Plus automated finishing solutions. With a larger sheet size and a higher throughput speed, the AeroCut Quatro is suited to the most demanding of fast turnaround print operations. The variable cutters
also give us the optimum flexibility in finished sizes to cover just about every common job” With a simple touch screen set up users can access one of over 260 pre-programmed job formats, or add their own unique customised settings, which can be stored in one of 90 extra memory slots for future instant recall. Cutting accuracy is ensured through the use
finger print ticks all the boxes
Innovative print and packaging specialist, Fingerprint FO+, wanted a proofing, prototyping and short run production solution that could match its versatile offset technology, and found it in Roland’s multi-talented VersaUV LEC-540. Using its new Roland UV-curable wide format print and cut solution, the Welwyn Garden City based company can now create accurate packaging prototypes and short run applications straight from its desktop computers onto exactly the same challenging and diverse range of media it puts through its two Heidelberg Speedmasters. Constantly working with new materials to push the boundaries of what is possible in high end packaging is a pillar of Fingerprint FO+’s innovative culture. The company regularly prints on a broad range of substrates from polypropylene, PVCs, foils and boards to more specialist substrates like Mirri reflective media It also produces applications using clings and lenticular effects. As such, it’s critical that Fingerprint FO+ is able to produce cost effective proofs and prototypes on demand, as well as short runs and specials, using the actual materials used for the main print run. In this respect the Roland VersaUV LEC-540, provided by Atech, a Roland Authorised Dealer, was the natural choice. It ticked every box on Fingerprint FO+’s criteria for generating mock-ups and experimenting with different materials. The highly flexible integrated print and cut machine, with its
of a register mark detection system. This system reads the image position on the sheet ensuring a perfect cut every time, whilst the creasing mechanism is fully adjustable to accommodate different thicknesses of stock. An optional side/ stop perforating attachment can be added to allow perforation in both directions on the sheet. At the recent drupa show the AeroCut Quatro was demonstrated using a unique plug-in to Adobe Illustrator, whereby the machine cutting and creasing parameters can be sent directly from the desktop t o the device ensuring accurate set up relative to the printed job. Hillhouse added “We’ve already installed two machines in the UK and we received several leads from drupa which has given us a great start with the Quatro. It sits nicely above our CardXtra products and gives us a very productive multifunction device in the range.” www.morgana.co.uk
maximum width of 1370mm, high quality UV-curable ink with additional white and clear options, has eliminated costly wet proofing and makes it a simple job to create concepts for customers and designers. “Since we’ve taken ownership of the machine, we’ve gone far beyond just proofing and increasingly use it to trial new materials. Previously we were working with an aqueous based wide format unit for proofing but, whilst it could produce accurate colour, it didn’t offer the high levels of flexibility we get from this UV-curable system,” explained Doug McBride, Sales Director at Fingerprint FO+. “The VersaUV LEC-540 integrated seamlessly with our existing abilities to output to a comprehensive range of plastics, corrugated and carton board. But now we have the freedom to explore new materials, textures, contours and finishes.” The Roland VersaUV LEC-540 is unique in the way it combines printing and cutting in a single unit for packaging and point of sale work and mock ups. The print and cut functionality has allowed Fingerprint FO+ to operate at the boundaries of creativity and technology when it comes to complex and eye catching packaging concepts. “For a company that specialises in producing innovative packaging and point of sale applications, the Roland VersaUV LEC-540 can open new doors to even greater creativity in the future. At Fingerprint FO+, it’s quickly proved to be the ideal solution for prototyping and experimenting with new materials and finishes,” comments Steve Chappell, Roland DG’s Business Manager — Proofing, Packaging and Industrial Labelling. “Additionally, this integrated print and cut system with its durable, flexible UV-curable inks is the only machine of its kind which can produce design concepts and short-run applications in a single unit. This technology is proving to be increasingly successful amongst the commercial print and packaging sectors.” Roland’s VersaUV LEC print and cut series is becoming increasingly attractive to companies in the commercial print, packaging and label sectors that want an efficient, colour accurate proofing system. Its compact footprint is complemented by the fact it only needs a standard 13 amp power supply, thus making it a very cost effective unit both in purchase and usage terms. Available in two sizes of 762mm and 1370mm which both fit perfectly into a typical B1 (720 x 1020mm) workflow, the Roland VersaUV LEC-540 chosen by Fingerprint FO+ is the larger option. It incorporates low energy LED-curing with long life lamps that are able to work with a broad of range of traditionally tricky and sensitive materials without damaging the surface or buckling the media. www.fingerprint.uk.com or www.rolanddg.co.uk

FOOTPRINT ADD ESKO and DUPLO Short-run specialist printers, Footprint has invested in an ESKO Kongsberg iXE-10 digital die less cutting table to add an extra dimension to their product offering. Following the installation of the Duplo DC-645IFS and Duetto hybrid bookletmaker, trade finishing became a significant revenue stream for the business making the addition of digital die cutting a safe investment. The Sussex based printer who started life as a small litho house has evolved to become one of Sussex’s most innovative digital print and trade finishing specialists. Until recent years, finishing at Footprint was very manual and extremely labour intensive. In 2010 the business reached such a level that investment was required. Husband and wife, Matt and Amber Mitchell made the decision to not increase staffing levels, but instead invest in machinery, opting for the Duplo DC-645 automated cutter creaser with Integrated Folding System and a Duetto hybrid digital and offset bookletmaking system. Despite only printing digitally in-house, the decision to purchase the hybrid solution enabled the firm to significantly increase the volume of trade finishing work from local printers. With the volume of trade work increasing, Footprint’s customer base also increased significantly. With more and more printers coming to Footprint with weird and wonderful finishing requests, Partner Matt Mitchell saw the ESKO Kongsberg iXE-10 as an opportunity too good to miss. “As a printer, saying no to a job is a painful reality if you cannot finish the job. With this in mind we previously outsourced a lot of die cutting at a great cost. In recent years, we have seen an increase in demand for die cutting, however run lengths have fallen dramatically. With the high cost and long turnaround times having complex dies made, traditional die cutting is just not a cost effective solution for us.” “Being a commercial printer, we were not fully aware of the ESKO range. All I can say is that when we saw it at Duplo, we had to have one. Initially, we were unsure if we would be able to generate enough work to pay for the table, however, five months in and it has not stopped!” “Initially, we spoke to our customers who we had previously done die cut work for and the response was great. We have had some weird and wonderful requests for runs as few as one. Having already built a large
customer base of trade finishing work with our Duetto bookletmaking line, once word got out about our new machine, the work went through the roof. People would often bring their work to us themselves to watch the ESKO in action.” The machine was installed at the beginning of the year and to date, Footprint have relied solely on word of mouth to market their new product. Amber Mitchell said: “We had planned a number of promotional direct mail pieces, but the table has been so busy, we have just not had the time.” “The work we are now receiving is really interesting and it is extremely satisfying to not only be able to finish everything that is asked of us, but to demontrate how it works to the customer. The quality of the product as well as the service we provide is key to our success.” Duplo UK Managing Director, Tony Lock commented: “When we talk about ‘Automated Precision’, Footprint are the perfect example. A company of just two people who not only run the pre-press and press, but operate as many as five finishing systems simultaneously is quite something. With digital print making every day different, Footprint’s latest acquisition means that whatever is thrown at them, they can more than likely finish it in-house.” www.duplouk.co.uk
Kodak nexpress prevents colour Obsolescence
Kodak’s strategy with the NEXPRESS Platform is to eliminate obsolescence risk. As a result, its systems are both scalable and upgradeable,” concludes J. Zarwan Partners founder John Zarwan in a new whitepaper commissioned by Kodak. “The idea is a simple one. Buy only what you need or can afford today and add additional features and capabilities later, without having to install a new machine.” The whitepaper explores the clear benefits of digital press upgradability and includes research conducted by Zarwan about the NEXPRESS Digital Press Platform and competitive digital presses. Zarwan found that Kodak’s upgradability strategy was compelling when compared to competitors. Zarwan observed, “The only way an HP INDIGO 5500 Digital Press customer could take advantage of the higher speed of the INDIGO 7000 or 7500 is to buy a new press.” Specific to Xerox, he noted, “Some new options are field upgradeable, such as the Xerox iGen4 Digital Press Matte Finish, but the Xerox iGen4 Digital Press Matte Finish is not easily reversible. So, to take advantage of the new option without limiting your work, you essentially need a second machine. Not only is that costly, but you now have additional capacity to fill.”
Also included in the whitepaper are endorsements from NEXPRESS Press customers. “The NEXPRESS Press we have today is the same one we started with five years ago,” said Theo Pettaras, founder of Digitalpress. “We have the ability to have the machine upgraded in the field. This allows us to have new inks and faster speeds. It also has the intelligent calibration system.” Updating existing systems, rather than buying new ones, is a compelling benefit for many customers. “With Kodak you do not need to buy new equipment every couple of years. You can just add new technology to existing equipment, which is very cost effective for a small company like ours,” said Wayne Said, Owner/Partner, Indie Printing. In closing, Zarwan observed, “Not all business situations are alike, and many factors enter into the decision to acquire any capital equipment. The selection of an appropriate digital press is particularly challenging, as technology changes rapidly, new features and functions are constantly being introduced, and the danger of being behind the curve soon after making a major purchase can put a printer at a competitive disadvantage. In today’s environment, it is particularly important to choose a press that can not only grow with your business but accommodate new features, functions, and capabilities as they are introduced. Most suppliers will provide attractive trade-in allowances to businesses that purchase new equipment. It is clearly preferable to be able to upgrade your existing equipment to bring it completely up to date.” www.graphics.kodak.com.

ASBO Graphics wowed by Roland’s BN-20
“A good product at a good price in good time” — that’s the philosophy behind ASBO Graphics remarkable success as a one stop shop for design and display work. It is also a philosophy that ASBO sees reflected in its latest investment - the VersaSTUDIO BN-20 desktop printer/cutter from Roland DG. A cost effective, compact and productive machine, the VersaSTUDIO BN-20 is helping Jordan Watret, owner of Loughborough based ASBO Graphics, turn the highly creative design work he produces for customers into high value finished articles. The versatile Roland VersaSTUDIO BN-20 is a complete desktop production studio that combines high quality, vivid and durable print with integrated precision cutting, and comes bundled with all the necessary software. Its ability to print metallic ink enables Jordan to produce graphics and displays with added “WOW!” factor — quickly and easily while ensuring at the same time that he maintains full control over the production - and the profit-margin - on almost every job he wins. In fact, the VersaSTUDIO BN-20 has been so successful it has helped make the desktop in Jordan’s home office the most profitable space per square inch in the entire business. “The integrated print and cut functionality of the VersaSTUDIO BN-20 is just one of the features that helps us achieve a bigger bang for our customers’ buck. It’s a highly efficient way of working, which keeps our service competitive, and it is more cost effective than investing in separate printing and cutting devices - not to mention the amount of space it saves.” “I often get asked for custom labels using the metallic ink which I can charge a premium for but don’t require any costly set up. Take, for example, my entry in the Roland Creative Awards — a 30th birthday bespoke bottle label using metallic ink. My customers love this sort of thing. It’s not the core of my business but it’s nice to be able to offer your customers something that your competitors can’t and make a decent margin on it” he said. Jordan started his career in print typesetting, before moving in to design and taking an in-house graphic designer position at a traditional litho printer. This combination of manufacturing experience and design expertise means ASBO can add real value by engineering solutions that make clients budgets go as far as possible, this is all the more achievable with innovative production hardware like the VersaSTUDIO BN-20. ASBO Graphics’ VersaSTUDIO BN-20 was supplied by Revolution Transfers, a Roland Authorised Dealer. It is his first Roland machine and he is already reaping the benefits of the improved print quality and reliability that comes with using Roland’s specially formulated Eco-Sol Max inks. “You should never have to repeat a job, it should be right first time. That’s why in the long term Eco-Sol Max inks are the most cost effective solution. I value my customers too much to risk giving them print work that is anything less than perfect,” he said. “It’s a competitive market place, but giving them stunning prints time and time again is everything I can do to ensure they keep coming back.” ASBO Graphics provides a wide range of graphic design and display services, including, flyers, booklets, brochures, posters, banners, vehicle graphics, logo designs, bespoke labels and branding solutions. Today Jordan feels confident that ASBO Graphics can handle any job that comes its way — nothing is too big or too small. Business cards, vinyl graphics, workwear, stickers, window graphics — with a Roland VersaSTUDIO BN-20, ASBO Graphics can do it. The Roland machine runs for 10 hours solidly nearly every day and “never misses a beat”. Jordan will soon be looking for a faster and wider Roland machine and is considering the VersaCAMM VS-540 as his business goes from strength to strength. “The demand is already there,” says Jordan. “It’s just a case of finding the space!” Further information about ASBO Graphics can be found at www.asbographics.co.uk or by calling 07870 343475. ArtSystems pass ISO9001 on first inspection Large format print and imaging distributor ArtSystems passed another milestone in their on-going programme of quality management accreditations. Having been ISO 9001:2008 accredited since the 1990s for its sales and delivery processes, ArtSystems took a decision to review and if possible, extend the range of the quality accreditation to include the challenging Technical Services operations. The new processes were implemented by the Quality Management Team lead by Operations Director Simon Cooksey, who commented; “We knew that extending the ISO 9001 quality processes to our Technical Services would be challenging. They involve perhaps the most complex set of customer and supplier interactions we engage in. As the service provider for example of all HP latex printer warranties we have a complex set of communications and SLAs to meet. We deal with the end user customer as HP’s warranty provider, whilst also working with the reseller who supplied the printer and also deal with HP for spares and any further technical questions. Add to this the logistics of parts, engineers and meeting the time constraints of the user it was evident that creating a manageable set of processes was not going to be easy!”
The new process passed on first inspection and now forms part of the full scope of the ISO 9001 accreditation for ArtSystems. This will not only help ensure the highest standards of services for Technical Operations, but help to build toward further improvements planned for 2012, such as new technical support services for resellers looking to offer higher quality levels of cover to their customers. Simon added “Quality management is more important than ever in industry today. ArtSystems is committed to expanding both its quality processes and chain of supply accreditations to create real value for all its customers and prove that the customer is at the centre of what we do in all our operations. This is significant step forward towards that goal.” www.artsystems.co.uk
Telford Repro cut guilloting times in half
Telford Repro have experienced dramatic productivity increases since investing in a new top of the range IDEAL 7228-06-LT guillotine. Established in 1994, Telford Repro started as a plan printer but has developed and expanded over the years to meet the ever changing needs of its customers. The company first evolved into a copy bureau before becoming the digital design and print specialist it is today. Six years ago the company moved to a brand new purpose built facility and began offering design services as well. Managing Director, Peter Llewellyn, sees the combined design and print service as a key driver in the company’s success; “Today, 50% of what we print we have also designed. We hold all the original artwork on our own servers so we can reprint or make amendments very quickly. It’s a key differentiator for us” Llewellyn continued, “The biggest change over the years has been the requirement for work to be completed in less and less time and we’ve done our best to embrace that change.” The shift towards faster turnarounds was a major factor in the company’s recent guillotine investment. As Llewellyn explained, “Guillotining was a major bottleneck. We handle 50-60 jobs a day and virtually all of that needs to be cut. We couldn’t afford to let the guillotine hold up the workflow.”
Mr Llewellyn contacted Stuart Granger of finishing specialists Docu-Finish Solutions and charged him with finding an appropriate solution. Stuart recommended the German made IDEAL 7228-06-LT. He said, “Telford Repro had clearly outgrown their guillotine and needed something that could cope with the volume of work they are producing. IDEAL guillotines are designed for digital printers; they are compact, reliable, accurate and great value for money. The 7228 comes with many of the features normally associated with the bigger, offset-focused, guillotine brands. It was a perfect fit for Telford Repro.” Peter Llewellyn has been delighted with the new machine, “The cutting zone is wider, it has a higher stack capacity and the back fence is much quicker. Overall, jobs are completed in half the time.” he said. Telford Repro has kept their old guillotine as a back up. The company makes a point of being able to finish everything in-house and having back ups means they never have to send work out. As Peter pointed out, “We have four Konica Minolta colour Bizhubs. If one goes down we can use the others to maintain production. We aim to achieve the same security of production with our finishing kit.” Keeping all their finishing in-house has helped Telford Repro achieve fast turnarounds but a more unusual innovation is the introduction of 24-hour working. The company’s nine staff work flexible shifts, including nights, to enable the business to maximise manpower and productivity at the times the work is most needed. Effectively, the company has been able to double its capacity and schedule urgent work or longer runs to be completed overnight. “It is a great formula for the business, our staff and our customers. Our staff have all the advantages of flexible working whilst our customers can place orders at 5pm and still get them the very next morning. It’s been very successful.” Llewellyn concluded, “In our experience, customer service is paramount, even more important than price. We work hard to develop relationships with our customers because we want repeat business not just one off orders. Changing the way we work or investing in new equipment is all about keeping one step ahead and giving customers the service they want.” For more information regarding Telford Repro, please contact Peter Llewellyn, 01952 670211, peter@telfordrepro.co.uk or www.duplointernational.com

Greenshires hits the right note for Iron Maiden Leicester based print services provider, Greenshires, has proved to be a headline act for heavy metal icons, Iron Maiden, with vibrant drum wraps printed on the company’s HP Scitex FB7500 Industrial Press. Greenshires — producers of sophisticated marketing materials and solutions, has added the quirky application to the arsenal of print jobs it undertakes, which has become a big hit with a leading maker of high end drum sets, Premier Music International Limited. This saw Greenshires selected to print special edition Iron Maiden “Ed Til I’m Dead” drum wraps for Premier, which the company produced on the HP Scitex FB7500 Industrial Press using POP34 mode for close view applications. In total, 500 sets of 11 drum wraps, totalling approximately 1000m2(10,800 ft2) of printing was produced in about five working days. Premier was so happy with the results it has since been ordering other drum wraps from Greenshires on a regular basis. “We were most impressed with the level of consistency in the finished result,” comments Colin Tennant, marketing manager at Premier. “The turnaround time is exceptionally fast but the quality does not suffer for it. And, the fact Premier can order wraps based upon actual orders rather than forecasting is also a benefit in itself.” Another fan of Greenshires drum wraps is Nicko McBrain, the Iron Maiden drummer. The wraps are exactly the same as used on Nicko’s tour kit for
the four Iron Maiden world tours. According to Greenshires sales manager, Marc Wolfe, the company’s earlier upgrade of the HP Scitex FB7500 to use HP FB225 Scitex Inks, proved instrumental to the company’s ability to take on the new creative drum wrap application. “When printing drum wraps, the challenge is ensuring the ink adheres without cracking on
the PETG substrate,” explains Wolfe. “With our previous machine, we could not get the ink to adhere; but with the HP Scitex FB7500 and the new inks, we had the confidence to try again. Through R&D we came up with the idea of ‘reverse printing’ on the back of the media. This prevents the drum wraps from getting scratched with extensive or rough use.” The six colour UV-curable HP FB225 Scitex Ink set also provides excellent dot gain and an impressive colour gamut up to 600dpi resolution. “We wouldn’t have been in the market for the drum wraps job without the HP Scitex FB7500 Industrial Press,” adds Wolfe. “The ink adherence and advanced digital printing capabilities made it possible for us to innovate and solve the challenges.” In addition to PETG for drum wraps, the HP Scitex FB7500 Industrial Press enables Greenshires to print digitally on a wide range of media up to 25mm (1in) thick, including EB Flute corrugated cardboard for free standing display units (FSDUs); as well as PVC for pop-up banners, foamex for exhibition graphics, and fabric for seat covers at exhibitions. “The HP Scitex FB7500 Industrial Press opens doors for us,” continues Wolfe. “We can now print on almost any media while confidently offering better quality, quicker turnaround and more competitive prices, even with the most challenging of projects.” www.hp.com. www.greenshires.com.

Your Print Solution invest in HP L26500
The team at Your Print Solution in High Wycombe were searching for a way to provide their clients with an enhanced customer experience. Your Printing Solution specialises in the production of large format prints, and they wanted to ensure that they were using the best available equipment for the job. Steven Brown, director of Your Print Solution reached out to Graham De Kock at CWE Solutions after receiving a promising recommendation. CWE Solutions are an esteemed reseller of large format printing equipment, they are a HP UK Partner and they were previously named HP Reseller of The Year. “Graham at CWE Solutions has been very helpful throughout the whole process.” said Brown, “we asked quite a lot of general questions, and he consistently gave us incredibly detailed answers.” Steven wanted to utilise the best technology available to achieve shorter turnaround times and outstanding results. Your Print Solution offer a wide range of large format printing services, including pull up banners and backlit graphics; and with high profile clients such as restaurant chain Wimpy, they are constantly searching for ways to provide a more effectual service. CWE Solutions were keen to support Steven in giving his business every advantage obtainable, and after considering the needs of the business CWE Solutions recommended the HP Designjet L26500. The HP L26500 offers increased efficiency and versatility, allowing users to print onto a wide variety of materials. Additionally, the HP Latex Ink technology means that the prints leave the printer completely dry; and in an industry where clients value speed just as much as quality, this feature is indispensable.
They also purchased the GMG Production Suite from CWE Solutions, who are the sole UK reseller of the software. The GMG Production Suite will allow Your Print Solution to maintain consistency between projects created using different systems. For Your Print Solution, the HP Designjet L26500 will be primarily used to create the backlit graphics for Wimpy, and the GMG Rip Software will allow the team to colour match these with smaller material such as the menus which are
produced using a HP Indigo Digital Press. CWE Solutions also recommended the GBC Arctic Titan 1064 Laminator which handles pressure-sensitive film up to 61” wide. The laminator also features a cold lamination setting which is ideal for materials such as PVC, which are incompatible with the traditional hot lamination process. “CWE Solutions provided us with a full solution to our large format printing requirements.” said Brown, “The whole process is so much easier now, and our turnaround times have been slashed dramatically. We have received constant support and I couldn’t fault the service.” If you would like to contact CWE Solutions to discuss the needs of your business, contact Graham De Kock on 08444 829895 or visit the website for more information: www.cwesolutions.co.uk. Intec launch desktop digital label printer Mayor of Poole Cllr Mrs Carol Evans unveiled the Edge 850 at an event in Poole attended by Under Sheriff of Dorset Katharine Jones and guests from as far away as Zimbabwe, Slovakia, Turkey, Italy and France. A partnership agreement was signed between iSys Label, the Canada based manufacturer of the Edge 850 and Intec Printing Solutions Limited. This makes Intec the sole distributor for the label printer in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and India. “This new short run roll to roll label printer is ideal for those wishing to print smaller quantities of their own labels and compliments the existing range of Intec on demand printers,” said Ian Melville, Managing Director of Intec Printing Solutions Limited, adding: “It will handle small on demand jobs as well as considerably larger ones, too, making it ideal for those who don’t want to invest in a very expensive system. The Edge 850 prints 2,000 labels in just 19 minutes.” Mark Hopkins, President of iSys, said: “Traditionally if you wanted 1,000 labels you’d have to commit to a much larger number to make it
worthwhile for the printer to do the job. Plus you’d typically have to wait two weeks before you could have them. This isn’t acceptable and this is where the new Edge 850 is so valuable. Now customers can print their own labels quickly and efficiently. It will handle both die cut and non die cut stock. The Edge also has change out toner, easy to use software and sets up in just 15 minutes.” Newly elected Mayor of Poole Cllr Carol Evans said: “I am proud to unveil this really innovative piece of equipment. I am so pleased to have been invited here to unveil this product at this, my seventh official engagement.” Recently appointed Under Sheriff of Dorset Katharine Jones added: “What a good news story for Poole. We all tend to think of the borough as a holiday destination but it has strong international trade links. Intec Printing Solutions and Sunseeker, to name but a few, both export their products around the world and really put Poole on the map.” www.intecprinters.com

Colortrac new SmartLF SC 42 wide format scanner
Allied Images, UK & Ireland distributor for Colortrac, announces availability of the recently revealed Colortrac SmartLF SC 42 scanners, the latest addition to Colortrac’s range of wide format scanners. The all new SmartLF SC 42 scanner is a robust, reliable high volume production scanner for SuperSpeed technical imaging and graphics. The 42” image width is ideally suited to the demanding and difficult volume scanning needs of AEC, CAD, mapping, GIS and service bureau professionals. Using Colortrac’s new full width SingleSensor with true 1200dpi optical resolution SmartLF SC 42 provides outstanding image capture with more than enough resolving power for any large format scanning job with virtually stitch free maintenance. Also, SuperSpeed USB3 interface gives the new scanner a very high speed data transfer rate of up to 5Gb/sec, about 10x USB2 rate, making everyday batch scanning tasks now even more efficient and productive. Commenting on the new scanning technology, Peter Brown, Colortrac Executive Director, said “The new SingleSensor digital imaging technology for the SmartLF SC 42 wide format scanners is a patented Colortrac invention. The SingleSensor is a single full width 42 inch array of Contact Imaging Sensors (CIS) that are housed in a robust structure and pre-aligned, giving higher optical quality and improved match between sensors. The full width SingleSensor has 50,400 pixels giving it an optical resolution of 1200dpi and a maximum scanning resolution of 9600dpi. It also uses a bi-directional white LED lighting system that optimises the illumination of the scan object and eliminates the effects of shaded areas caused by creases or folds in the original documents. The lighting system has an “instant-on” response which lowers power consumption as the lights are only on whilst scanning” SmartLF SC 42 is capable of scanning monochrome documents at 13 inches/sec and colour at 6 inches/sec. To improve the document feeding capabilities at these increased scanning speeds, it incorporates a new single roller document feed mechanism that holds the document firmly up against the SingleSensor lens. This allows the scanner to handle a variety of document types including creased, fragile or even thin media such as newspaper.
Also, SmartLF SC 42 is the first large format scanner to utilise the new SuperSpeed USB 3.0 serial PC interface that provides for data transfer at up to 5Gb/sec – about 10x the data transfer speed of the current USB2 interface. This reduces the time taken to transfer the image data from the scanner to the host PC which has always been a restriction on productivity. Tests indicate a realistic throughput of 273 Arch-E (36” x 48”) sized colour pages per hour at 200dpi resolution – or 171 documents at 400dpi – making SmartLF SC 42 large format scanner ideal for large archival jobs. SmartLF SC 42 is supplied with new SmartWorks EZ Touch software which is very simple to use and designed for operation by non-specialist users. Choose your preferred method of controlling the SmartLF scanner with keyboard, mouse or touch screen modes, while providing the entire basic scan to file and scan to copy functionality you need. SmartWorks EZ Touch software saves your scanned documents as PDF, TIFF or JPG files individually or as a batch, and makes document copies to any printer through standard Windows printer drivers. Steve Morin, Allied Images Managing Director, said “SmartLF SC 42 is the latest in a long line of innovative products from Colortrac. SmartLF SC 42 is an all new product whose wider colour gamut – better than most competitive scanners – higher scanning speed and SuperSpeed data transfer will make it the most productive scanner available. It’s a significant addition to the Colortrac SmartLF large format scanner range and reinforces Colortrac’s position as the leading innovator in the field of wide format scanning technology.” www.allied-images.com www.colortrac.com

Wide choice from a compact machine
Mimaki enjoys major success at drupa 2012
F
Offering a wider material choice (thanks to the option of SS21 or ES3 inks), white and metallic ink combination, die cutting capability and with sufficient width to print A1 posters, the Mimaki opens up myriad new product lines for print shops’ customers to choose from. The only solution in its class to simultaneously enable full colour, white and metallic inks thanks to its eight cartridge slots, the Mimaki CJV30-60 also sports multiple heaters for improved drying, a high build quality and latest generation, variable dot print heads. Mimaki’s RasterLink Pro RIP software (worth over £1,500) comes bundled free and is a professional 16 bit application, which is quick to learn and easy to use. The printer/cutter also sports a sturdy stand, powered take up unit and Mimaki’s Uninterrupted Ink Supply System which combine
Mimaki reported a successful conclusion to its presence at drupa 2012, the world’s leading print exhibition, where the company launched a number of new products. Attendees provided very positive feedback about the Mimaki’s new JFX500 series, a next generation high speed UV-LED flatbed inkjet printer, the new JV400-LX, a wide format printer that uses low curing latex inks, and the new JV400SUV, an inkjet printer equipped with solvent UV ink. Visitors to the Mimaki stand were especially impressed by the quality, speed and low curing temperature of these innovative systems. Another highlight for Mimaki was the impressive amount of sales generated, reinforcing the value of Mimaki solutions in today’s highly competitive sign and display graphics and textile printing markets.
JFX500 impresses on its debut
The unveiling of the new JFX500-2131, a next generation UV-LED flatbed inkjet printer, was a major attraction at the Mimaki stand. A high speed, high quality printing system, the JFX500-2131 offers excellent output — up to 60m2/h in four colour mode, and up to 50m2/h with white ink — and faithfully reproduces fine details including crisp print as small as two points. Its large flatbed — 2,100mm x 3,100mm — enables direct printing on a wide range of materials up to a 100mm thick, and its UV-LED curing unit ensures significantly improved curingefficiency — high speed printing is now possible without leaving behind uncured ink. In addition, the low curing temperatures associated with LED curing mean that the printer can handle a wider variety of heat sensitive substrates than printers with normal UV curing.
Versatile JV400 series a winner with visitors One of Mimaki’s aims is to empower its customers by offering them a choice of systems, enabling them to choose the one best suited to their needs. It is an approach that proved popular with drupa attendees, who were especially impressed by the versatility of the JV400 series. The JV400-130/160LX is a high speed, high quality latex printer that uses environmentally friendly latex ink, and enables users to print on a wide range of substrates, including uncoated materials. Mimaki’s latex products pave the way for commercial printers to produce cleaner and greener prints. With curing temperatures of 40 — 60°C, the printer not only is more energy efficient, but it enables commercial printers to use a wider variety of substrates. Mimaki’s JV400-130/160SUV, a revolutionary inkjet printer that blends the flexibility of solvent printing with the durability of UV-cured inks, also drew a significant amount of attention at the show. This unique system won plaudits from sign and display graphics companies, who recognised that the JV400-130/160SUV brings to market a new standard for sign manufacturers — solvent UV, blending the best of both ink technologies into one powerhouse printer. Keeping up appearances
There used to be an advert for phones that began “ashamed of your old mobile?” as if being seen without something that wasn’t state of the art would result in social exclusion or public stoning. It irritated me at the time with its presumption that everything that was new was great and everything that was old was obsolete. Martin Christie writes…
B
eing nearer to the latter state I am probably more sensitive to the suggestion, but I am still content with my ‘old’ dependable, solidly built, easy to use, Nokia. It has survived near drowning, numerous falls, and general abuse and still does what it needs to do. Apart from when someone sends me a text in the form of an essay, the small screen suits me fine and I have yet to see the advantage of having something that is more fragile, power hungry, and complicated to use, even if it will tell me the time of sunrise in Ulan Bator. I will need to upgrade to something more sophisticated at some stage, not to keep up appearances, but just to keep abreast of professional practise. But I will do so when I am ready, not when some marketing whiz kid thinks I am. For the moment I am happy to be on email only for a large part of the day, and not just all of it. The issue of upgrades in both hardware and software has been a current theme in this column, with the leading industry players, Microsoft and Adobe, both having major launches in recent and forthcoming months. Adobe launched Creative Suite 6 in May, and to coincide with the arrival of Windows 8 later in the year, Microsoft debuted a new tablet PC, Surface, in June. In this the two are almost at opposite ends of the customer market — the one bringing an even more sophisticated design and image manipulation collection to the professional user, and the other aimed to make the process more simple and accessible to an increasing market of non-professionals. The dilemma for the digital print shop is that we generally have to cater for both ends of the market, and need to be abreast of developments in all areas that may affect the service we can provide. So we need to keep pace with professional products from Adobe and others, as well as cover consumer trends in more popular areas. We need to cover all bases in effect, but this means a considerable, and ongoing investment in hardware and software. Previously a customer doing design or creating digital images probably had at least a desktop printer as a reference, so had some understanding of the reality of hard copy. The mobile computing generation has no such connection, literally not even a usb socket to link up in some cases. So the gap between create and print widens and has implications not just for accurate production but also basic housekeeping like proofing, and colour checking. If more print production is to be done at a distance, the greater the possibilities for error and wastage, especially as customers empowered by the new technology will be that much further removed from the practical issues of printing let alone the potential pitfalls. This will be an ongoing issue so watch this space. More immediately the challenge of keeping up to speed with Adobe means not only software upgrades but beefing up or replacing computers to cope with hard drive demanding and memory hungry programmes. Hanging on to old kit or dated software is not really an option as you will be rapidly overtaken not just by novelty but by your customers, and as mentioned last month there will be no updates or service patches for earlier versions of Creative Suite. We have to talk Adobe, as although other
software is available, it is by far the industry standard and universally accepted. Having started some years ago with basic Photoshop Five, I have grown up along with the series and have now spent my first learning month with CS5. I’ve looked at the advantages of CS6 but can’t see any major reasons to jump any higher. Going up from CS4, however, is certainly a massive improvement. It runs quicker and seems to be bug free — so far. One of the benefits of Adobe’s pick an’ mix system is that you don’t need to get the whole Creative Suite. There are way too many toys in the box for anyone who has a life to lead outside of cyberspace. The new Photoshop does a lot of things, like 3D modelling, that could previously only be done in a vector programme like Illustrator. Vector shapes have long been available in Photoshop it’s just that now they can be manipulated better. The new Photoshop is a more comprehensive design programme so that you may not need Illustrator or InDesign at all unless you have a dedicated designer on the staff. Often Photoshop is overlooked in basic layout of flyers or postcards — the bread and butter of the traditional copy shop. But timesaving page layouts can be saved in automated tools, and printing direct from Photoshop sorts any colour profile issues raised by transfer of files into other software. Multi-page PDFs can be created from files opened in Bridge, and CS6 has also seen the return of the Contact Sheet, not seen since CS2, one of the most useful things for sampling many photo files. Since the beginning of the Creative Suite series there have been a series of useful tools for retouching or removing unwanted items from images — from the old cloning/rubber stamp device, to the healing brush and patch tool. Originally these were simple copy and paste actions, now they are able to use the patterns generated in algorithms to reconstruct whole sections of a picture and match it seamlessly with the original. Content Aware, as it is titled, transforms the chore of restoration or revision and will vastly speed up the process. Another aid in the refining of images is in HDR or High Dynamic Range. I’ve mentioned it before as it is much used in advertising to ad punch and impact, from car adverts to the cover of Radio Times. The trick is to push vibrant colour into both the lightest and the darkest parts of an image without losing quality, and actually enhancing clarity. Previously this was achieved photographically by taking several images at different exposures and blending them together to use the best bits of each. From CS5, Photoshop can now perform the same trick with most suitable images. I’m only just touching the sides of CS5 as anything more comprehensive would need more than the pages of this magazine,

and a number of guides are available. Over the next few issues I will try and cover some functions that are most useful in the daily life of the print shop, as well as filling you in on anything I find of interest in the new toy cupboard. Plenty of toys this month as Fuji gave us a new camera to play with. If you spotted the two pictures of the ginger cat in the yard posted as a taster last month, I can tell you that they were not only taken with the same camera — the Fuji X-S1 — but from the same position using the exceptional optical zoom, as well as using all the fully automatic focus and metering functions of the camera. I like to do a new camera review from time to time to keep up with current developments, not least because customers often ask advice on what is a good one to buy, or about problems they have with one they have purchased and may be struggling to get good results. I know what I would choose and I would do, but sometimes putting yourself inside the customer’s head is a useful exercise. No apologies for another Fuji review, as we have had a good relationship with them over many digital years, and are happy to lend us their kit for review. Bizarrely some other manufacturers don’t seem to see any value in cooperating with a digital print trade magazine, preferring perhaps a small thumbnail in a lifestyle magazine to any useful professional feedback. So if you think I may be biased, you are quite right. However that bias doesn’t prevent me telling it as it is, and if it was a rubbish camera I would let you know, if not in so few words ! No this is a cracker, and I dropped it in the hands of several photographer friends during its stay with me and they were all favourably impressed. This camera looks and feels like a Digital SLR, but it isn’t. It’s a top of the range bridge camera with a super zoom, macro, and video facility, easy to handle, fast shooting, high quality image taker. Price wise it comes in around £500-£600 on web prices in the UK, so it competes with entry level DSLRs and may lose out to customers who have to have that cuedos. But entry level DSLRs often come with inferior optics, or at the very least a limited choice of lens, so the cost of a real equivalent package will be much greater. The XS-1 is a complete deal. The optics are comparable with lenses costing several hundreds, and the image quality that of any basic DSLR. The beauty of it is that it is bundled into one complete package to allow a versatile shooting range without needing to carry a bag full of bodies and lenses. It has all the expected manual options of settings, and also pre-sets that can be saved for particular conditions, but it also has a couple of great optimising settings that immediately assess the best settings as you take a picture. That’s how you can take a picture of a ginger cat hiding in a yard long before he thinks you’ve spotted him. If you had to go near or fumble about with another lens, like Macavity, he’s not there. What is remarkable, given the rushed nature of the snap, is the quality of the zoomed image, helped by image stabilisation at full stretch. Faster processing means quality digital cameras no longer suffer from the buffering time lag earlier models suffered from. The 26x zoom lens covers a 35mm equivalent focal range of 24-624mm and has a maximum aperture of f/2.8. The lens also features twist-barrel manual zoom and focusing controls, and a minimum focusing distance of 1cm in

super macro mode. Other highlights of the X-S1 include a large 2/3-inch 12-megapixel EXR CMOS sensor, a 3-inch tilting LCD monitor, electronic viewfinder with 1.44 million pixels and eye-sensor for automatic switching, full 1080p HD movie recording with stereo sound.More on shooting with the XS-1 next month along with some photography tips as requested by regular readers. Finally some big boys toys. I’m normally a little reluctant to accept trade invitations to yet another hotel foyer and the familiar presentation routine, but an invite from Repropoint to visit them at Mercedes Benz World didn’t need a second thought. For those of you who are not petrol heads, Mercedes Benz World is one part of a mostly automotive technology based complex at the old Brooklands racetrack, near Weybridge, Surrey, where dashing Bentley boys of the roaring twenties would have rubbed hub caps with debutantes and Hercule Poirot. Now it hosts a lot of twenty first century technology, including some of Mercedes recent world championship winning F1 hardware, as well as more sedate if still expensive consumer cars. And for one day only, a garage full of HP printers and consumables including the latest Latex, together with a vehicle wrapping demo on something bigger than a scooter. The opportunity to be driven round the skid pan in a top of the range merc, or the 4x4 course, or the race track simulator, may have helped the attendance but full marks to Repropoint for coming up with an original day out!

EcoPrint urges discussion over print sustainability Europe’s printers are concerned that confusion over standards for sustainable printing is preventing print’s eco-message from getting through to buyers, according to a white paper published by sustainable print exhibition, EcoPrint 2012. The Print Sustainability Standards and Communication white paper, produced by Print and Media Certification Ltd (PMC), is based on a survey of European printers where just 7.3% of respondents said they believed print is effectively communicating its message about sustainability. The paper also found that smaller printers are being discouraged from taking the first steps to sustainability because of the perceived cost of adopting standards, and the difficulty in determining why and how to make that first leap towards, for them at least, a very high bar. According to the paper, print needs to start work now on developing simple and effective ways to communicate the sustainability of the whole print process to buyers. Accessible
standards focussing on the entire printing process and recognising the value of those taking the first steps as well as those with the highest standards is the natural place to begin. Marcus Timson, Director, EcoPrint said: “It’s obvious that a lack of clarity when it comes to sustainability is holding us back. If the industry is to ensure its enduring relevance for the future then it must open up an accessible and frank debate on print’s current strengths and admit where there’s room for improvement – if we clarify the discussion internally, together, then it will be easier to communicate to external audiences.” Print Sustainability Standards and Communication is available to download free for those who register to attend EcoPrint 2012 in Berlin on 26/27 September. It also features three exclusive case studies from a certified printer (Erler+Pless, Hamburg), the designer and owner of the POPAI UK & Ireland standard and a specialist green printer (Addison Design). The white paper is sponsored by INX Digital, whose president
Ken Kisner said: “The research reveals some interesting insights and goes some way to confirming our feeling that confusion over the definition of sustainable print is in part responsible for the industry’s general inertia. Perhaps EcoPrint’s biggest contribution will be as a platform for enabling this discussion between the industry’s leaders to take place. In that respect, it’s a discussion that almost no-one can afford to be left out of.” The full paper analyses the results of the survey in detail, uncovering revealing insights such as: • The top three standards which were most quoted as useful for printers seeking to be more environmentally sustainable were ISO 14001, FSC/PEFC and carbon footprints. 56% indicated ISO14001 as useful, 49.2% FSC/PEFC, and 32.6% carbon footprinting. When asked if a new standard focussed on providing print buyers with information regarding sustainable innovation would be a positive thing 45.2% agreed, 36.3% said maybe and only 18.5% didn’t agree.
• 50.4% were certified to an environmental standard, and a variety of reasons were cited for not being certified: 40.5% thought it too costly and time consuming, 31% didn’t see it as necessary as customers did not require it, and a further 27% saw no need at all. The paper’s author, Jon Stack, Director and founder of PMC said: “The results of the survey undertaken make it clear that print is not getting its sustainable message across to print buyers and consumers of printed and other media. This is partly due to the wide range and nature of the standards adopted, but also that many small companies in the sector, which make up a large proportion of the industry, believe that it is costly and difficult to reach the standards set, and so are deterred from changing their business practices. The challenge for the owners and developers of standards, those who implement them, and the industry in general, is to communicate the good news about print’s sustainability to buyers and consumers in a simple and effective way that focuses on the whole printed product”. Konica Minolta in FTSE4Good Global Index Konica Minolta has announced that the company has been included in the FTSE4Good Global Index by FTSE International Limited (FTSE) in the U.K, one of the best known indices in the world for socially responsible investment (SRI) communities. This is the ninth year in a row that Konica Minolta has earned this recognition. Corporations around the world are evaluated by FTSE on criteria such as environment and social and corporate governance. Only those which meet strict standards are included in the index to be supplied as selection reference for investors and SRI funds with extensive interest in corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability performance. That will help investors choose to invest in companies that meet a series of globally recognised social responsibility standards. In the most recent evaluation, Konica Minolta has been awarded a full score in the environmental aspect, as well as receiving high marks in the governance aspect. Under the
Communication Message “Giving Shape to Ideas,” the Konica Minolta Group strives to meet the expectations of society by delivering products and services with smaller environmental impact through its proprietary new technologies, along with maintaining a highly transparent management for enhanced corporate governance. Aggressively developing the Group’s advantages into social values, Konica Minolta continues to drive its global management with CSR on a firm business footing. Besides the FTSE4Good Global Index, Konica Minolta has been included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Asia Pacific Index by Dow Jones and Switzerland-based SAM (Sustainable Asset Management) Group and the Japan based Morningstar Socially Responsible Investment Index. In Europe the company was honoured with the world’s first Blue Angel certification in the field of photo copy machines in 1992 and continues to receive this certification for a wide range
of products. As the world’s first environmental labelling system, the Blue Angel certifies products and services that are particularly environmentfriendly. Furthermore, several of Konica Minolta’s devices are also registered for the Energy Star, an international energy saving programme for office equipment. Beyond that, the company has also been awarded Prime Status by Germany based oekom research AG after having been found to be among the best companies worldwide for CSR in its industry segment. Green technologies such as Konica Minolta’s Simitri HD polymerised toner, which contains biomass to reduce CO2, underline the company’s CSR strategy. *SRI (Socially Responsible Investment): Investors and shareholders choose investment destination not only with financial aspects but also with corporate responsibilities in environmental, social and ethical aspects. www.konicaminolta.co.uk/environment

Prismaflex goes greener with 100% recyclable banner Large format printing specialist Prismaflex has launched a new production line at its Newhaven UK factory that enables the production of 100 per cent recyclable banner posters, made from 70 per cent recycled materials. The new 90gsm high definition banners are made from Prismaflex’s patented Graph’It material, a one face polythylene and one face polysther hybrid that can be disposed of as non-hazardous waste or incinerated to provide energy in line with European directives. Plastic eyelets are used rather than traditional brass or chrome, allowing the whole installation to be recycled after use. The recyclable banners can be printed on any of Prismaflex UK’s eight large format machines. The development highlights Prismaflex’s commitment to reducing its own and its clients carbon footprints and creating the environmentally friendly products leading advertisers and media owners now require.
“Despite all the justified excitement over digital, banners remain the mainstay of the out of home market and it’s absolutely vital that we incorporate the latest technology and build on our already high level of commitment to environmental standards in the way we service this market, not just in the UK but also internationally,” says Tom Weaver, managing director of Prismaflex UK. Prismaflex UK, based in a huge 25,000 sq ft factory at Newhaven in East Sussex, has recently purchased new welding, sewing and eyelet machines to expand the output from its eight superwide printers allowing it to produce large format posters, banners and building wraps on one site. Mr Huhtaniemi, who is based at the Finnish Embassy in London, is keen to promote the collaboration. Speaking during his visit to the paper mill in Irvine he said: “UPM Caledonian is a great example of Finnish business investing in Scotland. For nearly 25 years the mill has invested in the local community creating jobs both at the facility and in the wider community. “ He added: “I am equally impressed with the sound investment into sustainable manufacturing here with the integrated combined heat power plant. Our visit to Scotland is providing much opportunity and future discussion.” Mr Gordon Mitchell, General Manager at UPM Caledonian commented: “UPM has invested significantly into this site in Ayrshire, most recently with a £68M investment into a renewable energy power plant. This investment alone reduced our CO2 emissions by 75,000 tonnes per year and is a true contribution to the Scottish Government’s 2020 carbon reduction vision.” During the visit the delegation visited the operations at the site on Meadowhead Road as well as seeing the CHP facility. Totalpost school driving seats at Silverstone
A group of Cumbrian schoolchildren put their racing skills to the test at the world famous Silverstone circuit as they competed in the 2012 Greenpower Corporate Challenge. Pupils from Samuel King’s School in Alston joined forces with mailroom solutions specialist Totalpost Services Plc, also based in Alston, to take part in the challenge which requires teams to design and build a battery powered car to race around the track. Each team is allocated the same amount of batteries and the winner is determined by the car which covers the most distance in the allocated time. The Samuel King’s team faced difficult weather conditions on the day but managed to finish the race in 27th position amongst a field made up of 49 other schools from across the UK. David Hymers, Managing Director of Totalpost and a former pupil of Samuel King’s, said: “It’s not every day you get to race a car at one of the world’s most famous circuits and I thought the children from Samuel King’s were an absolute credit to the school and the region as a whole. “This is the second time we have supported the school in the Greenpower Corporate Challenge and it was a fantastic day from start to finish. The children conducted themselves with great maturity throughout the whole event and I think challenges like these really help them develop essential skills for when they join the working world, such as the value of teamwork, determination and effort.” As the school’s official corporate sponsor, Totalpost were also able to race the car in a longer endurance race later the same day. A number of other sponsors took up the chance to get behind the wheel and the Totalpost team mirrored the finish of their younger teammates, crossing the line in 27th position. NEW FROM INNOVA ART New, easy to use In 2006, when Innova Art announced the launch of FibaPrint white gloss 300 gsm (F-type gloss) IFA 09 – the first inkjet paper to emulate the unique quality of traditional bromide prints – digital printing took a quantum leap. The following year, the Technical Image Press Association, representing photography and imaging magazines from 12 European countries and eight million readers, awarded the paper Best Independent Inkjet Paper at the TIPA Awards Since then the Fibaprint range has grown, with matt, semi-matte, ultra smooth and semi-glazed versions having been introduced. When urban photographer Josh Cole, whose clients include Nokia, Nike, and Levi, turned to FibaPrint, the results were easily on a par with traditional darkroom prints, he said – “they may even be better”. Acclaimed US photographer Douglas Menuez described FibaPrint ultra smooth gloss as “The miracle I’ve been waiting for. With deeper blacks than any silver paper left on the market, for me this paper represents a rebirth of the darkroom.” Professional photographer David Osborn put it most succinctly. “If I could sit down and design a paper FibaPrint Gloss would be it.” The latest addition to the Fibaprint range, given its official launch at the WPPI tradeshow and convention, Las Vegas, in February, is IFA 45 FibaPrint warm cotton gloss 335gsm. It brings another quality to the range as the first to be made on a 100% cotton base. The ultra smooth gloss surface of the paper is produced by Innova Art’s unique crystal layer technology, which creates a barrier layer between the fibre base and the microporous glossy coating. This quality allows the paper to retain the finest detail, an exceptional tonal range and a d-max rating up to 2.7. FibaPrint warm cotton gloss was the brainchild of Innova’s North American Marketing Manager, Dave Williams, who introduced the first fine art cotton photo paper in this category a few years prior to joining Innova. “I really like the surface we’ve created on this product,” Williams commented. “The FibaPrint warm cotton gloss pushes things to a new level, with a uniform lustrous finish without a sparkly distraction. The generous 335gsm weight combined with the velvety rag base produces a sturdy print with an exceptional tactile sensation in your hands.” For more information on this latest addition to the Fibaprint range, contact Sarah Punt at sarahp@innovaart.com 01992 563355 or Laura Townsend at laurat@ innovaart.com 01992 571775.

Winning Large Contracts and Tenders
How having a Business Continuity Plan can make you money.
W
hether a business is large or small, complex or simple it would be advisable to give some consideration as to how it would overcome certain issues or events were they to happen.
What is Business Continuity? It is quite common for people to assume that Business Continuity is all about the backing up of data. Much as this is a very good starting point there are likely to be many more threats to the smooth running of a business that should be identified and addressed. For example how disruptive would it be for a business and its customers if any of the following were to occur • Flood • Fire • Loss of key people • Denial of access to your premises • Transport disruption • Loss of IT /Telecommunications • Loss of electricity or gas • Health & Safety incident • Supply Chain disruption • And more…..
SME Advisor can help you and your business!
Ensuring Business Survival Having identified potential threats a Business Continuity Plan (BCP) is then drafted with an action plan for each eventuality, the result being that should one or more threats occur that disruption is minimised or in extreme cases the survival of the business is secured.
Top Tips
Tenders & Large Contracts To win most large Private Sector contracts and all Public Sector contracts over a £100,000 in value a business will be asked to demonstrate its compliance in key areas and resilience in the face of potential seen or unseen eventualities. Such requirements when tendering for these prestigious and often very lucrative contracts will be contained within the Pre-Qualification Questionnaire (PQQ) and as such a pre-requisite to a tender application. Using the Public Sector as a benchmark for any such PQQ requirements then the following must be suitably compliant and in practice, 1. Health & Safety. Suitable policies, procedures and method statements must be in place to ensure that workers are operating within a safe working environment with potential hazards highlighted and working practices in place to reduce such risks. 2. Equal Opportunities. Normally within a Company Handbook it demonstrates the fair and non-discriminatory manner in which employees are recruited and allowed to
progress within the business. It is also likely that other company HR policies and procedures will be examined depending upon the nature of the contract available. 3. Business Continuity. Quite simply a strategy to overcome any number of events that may occur, thus minimising disruption to the supply of products or services and giving the business the best chance of survival. The complexity of a BCP will vary depending upon the strategic nature of any product or service that is to be supplied.
Look at it from the Buyer’s perspectiv e. Would you grant a contract to someone who migh t not be able to deliver the goods as specified and on time? The Buyer wants an easy life! Demonstr ate that you tick all the boxes for complianc e or else you won’t get past “first base” no matt er how good your product is or how keen your price s are! It makes good business sense. The comp liance requirements aren’t just there for tenders they make good sense so that your business doesn’t fall foul of Employment and Health & Safet y legislation. Good risk management could also save you money on your business insurance and on bank borrowing.
Stay ahead when tendering for new clients and it doesn’t get much simpler or cost-effective than working with SME Advisor!

Careless Talk Joe was a single guy living at home with his father and working in the family business. When he found out he was going to inherit a fortune when his sick father died, he decided he needed a wife with whom to share his fortune. One evening at an investment seminar he spotted the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Her beauty took his breath away. “I may look like just an ordinary man,” he said to her, “but in just a few years, my father will pass, and I’ll inherit his large fortune.” Impressed, the woman took his business card and three months later, she became Joe’s stepmother. Women are so much better at estate planning than men!!
Did you hear the one about the strangers on a train? A man and a woman, strangers to each other, booked the last two places on an overnight sleeper train. This obviously meant that they had to share a cabin but, having talked about it, they decided that they were both adult enough for that not to be a problem. Anyway, as night fell, it was decided that the woman would take the top bunk and that the man would get the lower one. After a short while they both fell fast asleep. At about two o’clock, the woman awoke feeling cold. She leant over the edge of her bunk and said; ‘Excuse me. I’m very sorry to disturb you at this time of the night but I’m cold. Would you, please, reach over and get me another blanket. The man replied; ‘I have a better idea. Let’s pretend that we’re married!’ The woman giggled and said; ‘Yes, OK, why not?’ To which, the man replied; ‘Well, then, get out of bed and get your own damned blanket!
Car Trouble Wife: “There’s trouble with the car. It has water in the carburettor.” Husband: “Water in the carburettor? That’s ridiculous.” Wife: “I tell you the car has water in the carburettor.” Husband: “You don’t even know what a carburettor is. Where’s the car?” Wife: “In the swimming pool.”
Horny homecoming A famous Viking explorer returned home from a voyage and found his name missing from the town register. His wife insisted on complaining to the local civic official who apologised profusely saying, ‘I must have taken Leif off my census.’
A word in your shell like Deep in the forest, a little turtle began to climb a tree. After hours of effort he reached the top, jumped into the air and, waving his front legs, plummeted to the ground and crashed. After recovering he did the same all over again. A couple of birds sitting on a nearby branch were watching his efforts. Finally the female bird turned to her mate and chirped, ‘Dear, I think it’s time to tell him he’s adopted.
Class sport When Blue Collar workers go out together on a weekend they talk about football. When middle management are together, they talk about tennis. Top management discusses golf. Conclusion: The higher up you are in management, the smaller your balls.
Say it with flowers A new business was opening, and one of the owner’s friends sent flowers for the occasion. But when the owner read the card with the flowers, it said. “Rest in Peace” The owner was a little upset and called the florist to complain. After he had told the florist about the obvious mistake, the florist said, “Sir, I’m really sorry for the mistake, but rather than getting angry, you should imagine this: Somewhere there is a funeral taking place today, and they have flowers with a note saying, “Congratulations on you new location.”

IT Survey One day, a Mechanical Engineer, Electrical Engineer, Chemical Engineer and Computer Engineer were driving down the street in the same car. All of a sudden, the car broke down. The Mechanical Engineer said, “I think a rod broke.” The Chemical Engineer said, “The way it sputtered at the end, I don’t think it’s getting gas.” The Electrical Engineer said, “I think there was a spark and something is wrong with the electrical system.” All three turned to the computer engineer and said, “What do you think?” The Computer Engineer said, “I think we should all get out and get back in.”
Elementary Camp Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson went on a camping trip. After a good meal and a bottle of wine, they lay down for the night and went to sleep. Some hours later, Holmes awoke and nudged his faithful friend. ‘Watson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see.’ ‘I see millions and millions of stars,’ Watson replied.
A thief broke into the local police station…
‘What does that tell you?’ Holmes inquired. Watson pondered for a minute. ‘Astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo. Horologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three. Theologically, I can see that God is all powerful and that we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What does it tell you?’ Holmes was silent for a minute, then spoke. ‘Watson, you idiot. Some bastard has stolen our tent.
Hear today Maurice an 82 year-old salesman went to the doctor for his physical. A few days later the doctor saw Maurice walking down the street with a gorgeous young lady on his arm. A couple of days later the doctor spoke to Maurice and said, “You’re really doing great, aren’t you?” Maurice replied, “Just doing what you said, Doc: “Get a hot mamma and be cheerful.” The doctor said, “I did not say that. I said, “You got a heart murmur. Be careful.”
He quickly pulled his wallet from his pocket and slowly counted out five €20 notes, which he pressed into the young woman’s hand. He looked into her eyes and slowly, meaningfully said... ‘Buy a copier’.
Quote to go A sceptical anthropologist was cataloguing South American folk remedies with the assistance of a tribal brujo who indicated that the leaves of a particular fern were a sure cure for any case of constipation. When the anthropologist expressed his doubts, the brujo looked him in the eye and said, ‘Let me tell you, with fronds like these, who needs enemas?’
Yanks tell it like it is
A digital press salesman was sitting at a bar enjoying a post exhibition drink when an exceptionally gorgeous and sexy young woman entered. She was so striking that the salesman could not take his eyes off her. The young woman noticed his overly attentive stare and walked directly toward him. Before he could offer his apologies for being so rude, the young woman said to him, ‘I’ll do anything, absolutely anything, that you want me to do, no matter how kinky, for €100 on one condition.’ Flabbergasted, the man asked what the condition was. The young woman replied, ‘You have to tell me what you want me to do in just three words.’
HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHOM TO MARRY? ‘You’ve got to find somebody who likes the same stuff. Like if you like sports, she should like it that you like sports, and she should keep the chips and dip coming.’ Alan, age 10. ‘No person really decides before they grow up who they’re going to marry. God decides it all way before, and you get to find out later who you’re stuck with.’ Kirsten, age 10 WHAT IS THE RIGHT AGE TO GET MARRIED? ‘Twenty-three is the best age, because you’ll have known the person FOREVER by then.’ Camille, age 10. ‘No age is good to get married at. You’ve got to be a fool to get married.’ Freddie, age 6. HOW CAN A STRANGER TELL IF TWO PEOPLE ARE MARRIED? ‘Married people usually look happy to talk to other people.’ Eddie, age 6 ‘You might have to guess, based on whether they seem to be yelling at the same kids.’ Derrick, age 8. WHAT DO YOU THINK YOUR MOM AND DAD HAVE IN COMMON? ‘Both don’t want no more kids.’ Lori, age 8.
and stole all the lavatory equipment.
A spokesperson was quoted as saying…

WHAT DO MOST PEOPLE DO ON A DATE? ‘Dates are for having fun, and people should use them to get to know each other. Even boys have something to say if you listen long enough.’ Lynnette, age 8. ‘On the first date, they just tell each other lies, and that usually gets them interested enough to go for a second date.’ Martin, age 10. WHEN IS IT OK TO KISS SOMEONE? ‘When they’re rich.’ Pam, age 7. ‘The law says you have to be eighteen, so I wouldn’t want to mess with that.’ Curt, age 7 ‘The rule goes like this: if you kiss someone, then you should marry them and have kids with them. It’s the right thing to do.’ Howard, age 8 IS IT BETTER TO BE SINGLE OR MARRIED? ‘I don’t know which is better, but I’ll tell you one thing. I’m never going to have sex with my wife. I don’t want to be all grossed out.’ Theodore, age 8 ‘It’s better for girls to be single but not for boys. Boys need someone to clean up after them.’ Anita, age 9. ‘Single is better, for the simple reason that I wouldn’t want to change no diapers. Of course, if I did get married, I’d just phone my mother and have her come over for some coffee and diaper changing.’ Kirsten, age 10 HOW WOULD THE WORLD BE DIFFERENT IF PEOPLE DIDN’T GET MARRIED? ‘There sure would be a lot of kids to explain, wouldn’t there?’ Kevin, age 8. ‘You can be sure of one thing - the boys would come chasing after us just the same as they do now.’ Roberta, age 7. HOW WOULD YOU MAKE A MARRIAGE WORK? ‘If you want to last with your man, you should wear a lot of sexy clothes, especially underwear that is red and maybe has a few diamonds on it.’ Lori, age 8 ‘Tell your wife that she looks pretty even if she looks like a truck.’ Ricky, age 9.
‘We have absolutely nothing to go on.’
