BMC installs two new Xerox iGen 150 presses BUSINESS communication specialist Banner Managed Communication (BMC) has announced the purchase and installation of two new Xerox iGen 150 digital cut sheet presses. The digital presses deliver high-quality colour print on both long and short runs, advanced levels of personalisation and rapid turnaround, using the latest workflow technology. The new iGens are at the heart of a £1.5m (2.5m USD) investment in new equipment at BMC’s Guildford site. The upgrade also includes document management and finishing technology and reflects the sharp increase the company is experiencing in the volume of business-critical correspondence being generated by clients, particularly in the financial services sector. BMC also reports strong take-up of its hybrid mail solutions where clients are enjoying huge process

efficiency gains. BMC stated that the biggest driver of all is clients’ increasing awareness of the cost and efficiency benefits of BMC’s fully-fledged multichannel communications offering. Catherine Burke, Managing Director of Banner Managed Communication, commented: “Our Guildford facility is now established as a highly

secure, market-leading multichannel and document management facility and this latest iGen investment underpins our already strong digital print firepower. Our multichannel offering extends across creative, print, data management, scanning, mobile, email, hybrid mail and a host of other services. In some of these areas it’s fair to say that we developed solutions ahead of time, in anticipation of where we believed the market was heading. The clear message from our run of recent contract wins is that client demand for fully integrated services has now reached a tipping point. We’re undoubtedly reaping the competitive benefit of being one of the few providers with a proven track record of providing genuinely end-to-end multichannel solutions.” www.banner-managedcommunication.com

Warren Board announces iPad Air winners WARREN Board Sales Ltd., a leading independent carton board and graphical board stockist, has announced the first prize winners of its IPad Air playing card style promotion, run in collaboration with Stora Enso. Customers have the chance of winning one of three 16GB iPad Air’s, over a three-month period. A record number of entries were received for the first two months of the campaign, which promoted the characteristics and qualities of Stora Enso’s packaging and graphical board grade, Ensocoat and Chromocard, with the first winner being confirmed as Dave Webster, Purchasing Director of B&D Print Services. Speaking about his fantastic prize win, he commented, “I have never entered one of Warren Board’s competitions before as I hardly ever enter competitions.” Dave added, “I was over the moon when I heard I had won. When I was asked if I was going to keep the prize for myself, or give it away; I didn’t have to think very hard!” B&D Print Services Ltd is a commercial lithographic and digital printer based in the North West with a trading history of over 30 years. The company also provide mailing, graphic design and web design services and operate a ‘real-time’ on-line system for access to job progress with the ability to upload artwork and check proofs online. The company holds ISO 9001 and 14001 accreditations. The second winner of the iPad Air was Paul Carden, Director and Joint Owner of KMD Company Ltd of Leicester. Responding to news of his win, he stated, “I don’t enter many competitions and this is the first time I have entered a Warren competition. I was really excited to hear I had won the Chromocard iPad Air and I have decided to give it to my wife. We’ve chosen the iPad with the smart black front and my wife is looking forward to seeing it.” Leicester based KMD has been producing high quality litho printed point of sale, packaging, presentation packs and children’s learning products for over 35 years. The company are producers of bespoke solid board, micro-flute and litho-laminated B and E flute fold flat cartons. Commenting on the announcement of the first winners of the prizewinning collaboration, and talking about the second competition board product, Robert Swallow, Sales Manager with Stora Enso Graphical Board, stated, “If you’re looking for a graphical board with optimal strength and

stiffness combined with a coated white reverse, Chromocard is a great option. Chromocard is suitable for almost any graphical end use, including brochures, calendars, greeting cards, covers, displays, folders, notepads and posters. Chromocard HB has high bulk and remarkable stiffness. Chromocard HB is suitable for all printing and finishing operations, offering excellent print quality and runnability at high speed.” Kieran Ferguson, Warren Board’s Managing Director added, “We had a record number of entries for our Ensocoat and Chromocard iPad competitions and with such a fabulous prize up for grabs, it was probably no surprise that a lot of our customers wanted to try to get their hands on a 16GB iPad Air.” The prize-winning campaign was launched to promote the characteristics and qualities of Stora Enso’s packaging and graphical board grades, Ensocoat, which was then closely followed by competitions promoting Chromocard HB (High-Bulk) and finally Tambrite H/S (hard-sized) with an iPad Air available to win in each of the respective months. As part of the unique promotion, customers received a deck of 19 playing cards, together with a loose A5 playing card in an envelope, both of which have been personalised. The carton holding the cards was printed on Ensocoat 275gsm, with six cards inside also printed bearing Warren Board’s colourful mascot Starsky to demonstrate the ink hold-out of each product. Three of the playing cards were also reverse printed to illustrate the printability on both sides of Ensocoat, Tambrite H/S and Chromocard HB. Stora Enso has been a long-term partner to Warren Board with the main focus being on their high-quality packaging grade, Tambrite. Following Warren Board’s successful development of the commercial and graphical print market, their relationship has been further strengthened by the addition of both Chromocard and Ensocoat to its ranges. New Print Quote Facility Software AN industry first! New Print Quote Facility Software launched in the UK for real-time quotes and an instant ordering system. Q-Quote is a new ‘real-time’ online quote and order system for digital and litho print businesses, offering an instant print quote facility on their website. Designed for SMB print businesses, Q-Quote aims to increase productivity, drive sales and boost revenue. How does it work? Its simple structure means that once signed up for, Q-Quote provides the printer with a web code that slots seamlessly into their website, creating a quote/order hub. You can either go with the baseline ‘out of the box’ prices or amend them to meet your own needs. Q-Quote knows when to go either litho or digital, based on the settings and print cut off points you enter. Wireframe IO Director Steve Pettitt explains, “Q-Quote means existing print companies don’t have to invest in the extensive cost of building a bespoke, ecommerce website, Q-Quote instantly brings their websites up to date with ecommerce opportunities.” Ordering online: The quoting system can be used with an annual licence which cost £199 + VAT pa, and with the initial purchase, includes 100 Q-Credits. Additional credits can then be

purchased ‘in app’ as required. Setting up is made as easy as possible, with a set of baseline prices already in place, ready for you to tweak. Q-Quote offers full, UK online help, online manual, and easy to follow steps throughout each section of the site. Finally the simple ordering process takes payment via PayPal and allows order tracking as it progresses — printers receive the payment directly from their customers. During the launch promotion, early adopters will receive an additional 50 Q-Credits. In addition, you only pay for orders that go through the system and Q-Credits have no expiry dates for greater flexibility. Other benefits? GoCompareThePrint.com - All print businesses that sign up for the Q-Quote System have the option of being added to a new print comparison website, an no extra cost. This opens up a whole new world of opportunities to SMB print businesses nationwide. Powered by the Q-Quote Technology, this site offers instant, real-time print quotes direct from the printers with no hassle. You can then choose the best deal, order, pay and upload any artwork all in one place. For more info or to see a working demo, visit: http://q-quote.gocomparetheprint.com/

Venture Signs Epson SureColor SC-S30600 LINCOLN based Venture Signs & Graphics Ltd recently installed an Epson SureColor SC-S30600 printer to expand its print capabilities and bring more of its wide format print work in-house. The company bought the printer from SMGG, the commercial graphics division of Stanford Marsh Group. The SureColor SC-S30600 Printer was selected for its efficiency and reliability, alongside its excellent reputation for printing on vinyl media. Venture Signs is primarily using the SureColor SC-S30600 for sign-making applications and vehicle graphics; the printer recently enabled Venture Signs to tackle a 50m hoarding print job with no difficulties whatsoever – something that would have been nigh-on impossible prior to the installation. Another eye-catching project is the company’s use of the SureColor SC-S30600 to print vinyls for wrapping eight support vehicles and two exhibition units for the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance. Venture Signs & Graphics was contracted to print and fit the required liveries and graphics to the various vehicles and units and was subsequently praised for the quality of its expert printing and application services; the fleet’s distinctive yellow livery with the charity’s branding is said to have helped the helicopter and supporting exhibition unit to attract a 30 per cent increase in visitors at the recent Waddington Air Show. Designed to offer efficient and environmentally-friendly production at the lowest total cost of ownership, the SureColor SC-S30600 enables print businesses such as Venture Signs to cost-effectively expand their service offerings. It can produce everything from posters, signs, banners, backlit panels and POS to vehicle wraps, interior decorations and exhibition displays.

With a wide range of roll media supported, users can reliably and cost-effectively print on vinyl, canvas, clear film, photographic paper and a range of popular banner substrates, at up to 64-inch (162.6cm) width. By enabling Venture Signs to bring previously outsourced work in-house, the Epson machine gives the company greater control over the quality of the output it delivers to its customers. On the selection of the SureColor SC-S30600, Keith Archer from Venture Signs explains, “We were looking for a printer to boost our production and the SureColor SC-S30600 was highly recommended by a number of people. The Epson print heads were singled out as being particularly impressive.” When purchasing the SureColor SC-S30600 wide format printer, Venture Signs also purchased an Easy Mount EM 1600 SH laminator and Wasatch RIP software. They also benefitted from a free-of-charge Epson SureColor Academy training day which ensures that end users can get the very best results from their new printers. The company selected SMGG as the supplier having seen a number of positive customer testimonials in the trade press, backed up by a number of personal recommendations. Keith continues, “Our experience of working with SMGG has been very positive. The company’s responsiveness made the purchase and installation a simple and hassle-free experience.” SMGG’s Steve Guest adds, “As an independent supplier of one of the widest ranges of leading printers in the UK, we are always able to recommend the right solution for the right application. Whilst our pricing is always competitive, it is never at the cost of good service and we pride ourselves in the unbiased consultancy services we are able to offer.” For more information on SMGG, please visit www.smgg.co.uk

Technique Print Adds Digital Print from Apex TECHNIQUE Print Group, Banbury, Oxfordshire, has announced the installation of a new Konica Minolta C6000 digital printing solution. The machine was sold, installed and will be supported by Apex Digital Graphics, Hemel Hempstead and Leeds, a UK distributor to printers for Konica Minolta and the official UK distributor of Ryobi offset printing presses. The company had held off taking the plunge into digital for quite a while. Technique Print Group has been known for its graphic design capabilities and quality litho printing for many years. Commenting on the decision to add its own digital solution, Karl Smith, Managing Director of Technique Print Group, said: “Whilst the company maintained its litho focus, a growing percentage of work handled has suited digital production – either due to run length or a personalisation requirement – that we were having to outsource. This purchase will bring all of that digital work in-house, giving us total control over the production process. “We looked at a whole host of the main digital equipment suppliers, including Konica Minolta, Ricoh, Xerox, and Canon – some of them more than once but from different distributors. Konica Minolta and Apex came out on top for us. The Konica Minolta equipment was, in our opinion, the most capable, but Apex made the real difference, because they understand print and have people who are able to look at a digital machine from a printer’s perspective. They also illustrate how serious they are about digital by having a machine in their own showroom, rather than using the manufacturer’s facilities, and by developing a full

technical support structure of their own. “This wasn’t the cheapest solution that we saw – but then the right equipment and the right supplier is more critical than just the price. Cost of the product is important, of course, but the purchase has to be right and the supplier has to be able to look after you as a customer. You need a supplier that understands your needs, and one that is going to be here tomorrow as well.” Konica Minolta’s C6000 creates extraordinary colour and monochrome printed images at up to 60 pages per minute. The product incorporates real-time image density and colour density control sensors for long-run stability, as well as high-speed

printMAX hat-trick for England’s World Cup FOLLOWING the overwhelming success of their two hardware offers during the world cup, printMAX has now opened up a 3rd offer for consumables customers. In addition to offering one lucky customer their money back on a Roland printer should England win the world cup, along with a free Roland ink for each England goal scored on Roland machine orders placed before June 30th, Roland’s most successful reseller will be opening up the offer to give any orders on ink or media 1% credit for every England goal scored. Any customers placing orders on ink and media up to the 13th July will receive 1% credit on their total bill during that time for every goal scored. A potential of 10% credit for

future purchases on a month’s worth of orders! Michael Bolton, MD “We have seen some real success on our ink for goals scheme and wanted to pass on this excitement and buzz to our consumables customers. We strongly believe in looking after our loyal customer base so hopefully if England get just a couple of goals in, we’ll be able to pass on some benefits to our customers, giving them another reason to cheer the team on during this World cup!” The offer is available to both new and existing customers on all ink and media orders, for more information or to take up printMAX’s offer, call 01420 511539 or visit www.printmax.co.uk.

scanning, digital colour printing, modular inline finishing capabilities and versatile Image Controller options to fit the demands of any production workflow. The device images at up to 1200 x 1200 dpi resolution with 8-bit processing for smoother, more realistic images. High-performance Image Control options from Konica Minolta and Fiery are combined with Apex’s own pre-press knowledge, colour know-how, and technical support. By bringing the work currently being outsourced back under its own roof the company will be close to covering the cost of the new equipment. “We have plenty of work to get the new kit off to a flying start, but we can now actively sell digital print as a service as well,” said Karl Smith. “We know that existing customers have work more suited to digital that we believe we can win. I have no doubts that this investment will pay for itself extremely quickly.” Commenting on the installation for Apex Digital Graphics, Neil Handforth, Sales and Marketing Director for the company, said: “Our focus on what printers need from a digital print solution has yet again helped to set us apart from the “box shifters” in this market. Print companies do need to be very wary of simply seeking out the cheapest digital kit, thinking that they will make it produce what they need. It really isn’t a simple or straightforward process. Our support team bring many years of pre-press and printing know-how to the market and are able to focus on digital production from a professional print perspective: both Apex and its customers believe that it makes a significant difference.” For more information: www.techniqueprint. co.uk or www.apexdigital.co.uk

Canon research highlights opportunities for quick print professionals CANON Europe has revealed the results of its fifth Insight Report – Building your future with print, an in-depth piece of research commissioned to compare the views of print service providers (PSPs) with print and media buyers and to revisit themes of earlier Insight Reports. Canon’s research reveals that there is much for PSPs to be positive about, but also highlights that, while the majority recognise that they need to change and that their biggest revenue growth over the next five years will be digital colour, they also struggle to identify other new areas of growth and to differentiate themselves. The survey, which was conducted by an independent market research agency, comprised telephone interviews of 552 senior decision-makers (275 at commercial printers and in-house print rooms and 277 print and media buyers) across a range of industry sectors in 25 countries across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. 80% of print service providers surveyed had an annual turnover of two million Euros or less. 20% had a turnover of more than two million Euros. The in-depth interviews confirmed that 84% of print buyers still feel that PSPs are meeting their ‘overall communication needs and that 78% believe they are receiving value for money from their PSPs. However, there is also still room for improvement in terms of offering proactive advice and bringing new developments and ideas to the table. While 46% of buyers foresee that their print requirements are unlikely to change over the next few years, those who do expect to use more printed materials highlight the value that print delivers as a reason to increase their use of printed applications. They believe that print communicates quality, that it is a way of differentiating their companies from their competitors and that it is the most effective way to reach specialist or older audiences. The report also identifies several areas of difference between PSPs and buyers, but which actually are potential opportunities for business growth for PSPs. For example, print buyers are more aware of digital print applications than they were two years ago, but 31% remain unaware of print-on-demand or short run publications. This is then a clear opportunity for the 62% of PSPs who expect strong growth from print-on-demand and short run business. Similarly, the use of web-to-print services by buyers has grown by over 50% since 2012, yet more than 66% of providers currently do not offer web-toprint services. Another area of difference highlighted is in multi-channel communications. Currently only 20% of PSPs offer their customers cross media or multichannel campaign coordination. However, the proportion of buyers now commissioning multi-channel or cross media campaigns has increased from

The Pen Warehouse wins Envoy Award

THE Pen Warehouse has been named Supplier of the Year in this year’s Envoy Awards. Neil Cleere, Managing Director of The Pen Warehouse said: “We’re delighted to win this prestigious industry award and would like to thank everyone who voted for us. We will endeavour to continue to support distributors through our ongoing commitment to new product development, innovative platforms and services and exceptional customer service.” Pictured is Becky Thorne, Sales and Marketing Executive at The Pen Warehouse (right) accepting the award from Hannah MacGregor from Trade Only. www.pens.co.uk

58% in 2012 to 68% in 2014, demonstrating a growing requirement for these services, especially in the design and delivery of such campaigns. So, even though 55% of print buyers ask their print provider for advice on multichannel communications, many PSPs have yet to extend their services to meet this demand. Change and the need for it is a topic also brought to light in the report. In Canon’s 2008 Insight Report, Digital Printing Directions, 72% of PSPs agreed that they could no longer do things as they always had and that they needed to change. Today, that figure has risen to 80%. Of those who agree that change is necessary, most trust their ability to change and adapt, but just need a further motivation to do so. However, despite the fact that print buyers are saying that they want their PSPs to capitalise on the latest technology and applications, offer a wider range of services and to communicate more effectively, the proportion of PSPs who consider themselves to be communications service providers has actually fallen from 54% in 2008 to 46% in 2014. Considering the number of PSPs who believe that they need to change, it is perhaps surprising that only 48% of commercial printers and 32% of in-house printrooms have a formal marketing or business development plan. Also surprising is that the proportion looking to suppliers for business development support has dropped significantly to 55% since 2008, when the figure was over 75%. Andrew Harris, European & UK Professional Print Marketing Manager, Canon Europe, comments: “From the feedback we’ve had from print buyers in our fifth Insight Report, it’s clear that many print service providers are doing the right thing to keep their customers satisfied and deliver value for money. It’s also the case though that there are certain areas, such as multi-channel communications, print-ondemand and web-to-print, where buyers’ level of awareness of applications or their usage does not match the estimates or offerings of service providers. These ‘disconnects’ are clear ‘calls to action’ for service providers and present opportunities for getting closer to their customers, while also developing their business. “However,” continues Harris, “while some things have moved on, this Insight Report also shows that there is a lot that hasn’t changed in the past two years. While print buyers indicated that they needed support in certain areas, service providers don’t appear to have taken this as a sufficient motivation to make the changes they needed to make. We are therefore hoping that, for our customers attending the Canon for Business 2014 event in Poing this week, they will find the inspiration and motivation to make the necessary changes that will help them to get closer to their customers.” www.canon-europe.com

HP’s New Large-format PageWide Technology HP has announced the scaling of its inkjet-based PageWide Technology for large-format printing, delivering high-quality prints at faster speeds and lower costs. This innovative technology, which consists of more than 200,000 nozzles on a stationary print bar and spans the width of the page, enables users to produce a variety of black and white and colour applications, such as drawings, maps and posters. HP PageWide Technology will disrupt the $1.3 billion production printing market currently dominated by monochrome light-emitting diode (LED) printers. HP also is expanding its existing large-format portfolio with new devices and software designed to meet specific business demands for highvolume, production printing. The new products include: The HP Designjet T3500 Production eMultifunction Printer (eMFP), the most productive large-format colour multifunction printer in its category; The HP Designjet T7200 Production Printer, a full-colour large-format printer built for central reprographic departments (CRDs) and reprographic houses with high-volume print demands; and HP Designjet SmartStream, a software programme that streamlines the complete printing workflow. These solutions can handle the volume and diverse print needs of; quick printers, CRDs, designers, and small to medium sized reprographic companies. “Our customers are continuously seeking costeffective and reliable printing technologies that improve the way they work,” said Stephen Nigro, senior vice president, Graphics and Inkjet Solutions Business, HP. “The new large-format HP PageWide Technology will disrupt the production printing market by offering customers an affordable option for high-volume quality prints, transforming an industry that typically prints in monochrome to now print in colour without compromising speed.” For more than 30 years, HP has led the inkjet printing market by investing in printhead and

ink research and development. Building on the success of its HP PageWide Technology from industrial production to small business printing, HP will offer customers dependable and economical operation for high-quality, large-format printing at high speeds. With inkjet technologies, the ink vehicle, which carries the colourant to the surface of the printer, is crucial to the stability of the ink, the drop ejection process and the overall print result. The HP PageWide printhead is built with thousands of identical drop generators that offer uniform volume, speed and trajectory for precise printing. The technology also regulates the speed and penetration of Original HP pigment ink to accelerate drying and to control dot size, feathering and colour-to-colour bleed for highquality prints. Together with HP Thermal Inkjet Technology and HP pigment inks, the new HP PageWide Technology for large-format printers reduces the cost per page and offers the flexibility to use low-cost photo papers for graphically rich applications. Additionally, the PageWide platform prints the full page in a single pass for decreased turnaround time. The compact 36-inch HP Designjet T3500 Production eMFP requires no warm-up time and features an ultra-fast processor and a high-productivity scanner with batch-scanning, multipage PDF creation and scan-to-email capabilities. The device also allows for unattended

and low-cost operation, producing monochrome prints at the same cost per page as LED MFPs. For printing jobs requiring high security, it is built with a self-encrypting hard drive, secure disk erase and controlled access printing. The 42-inch HP Designjet T7200 Production Printer is capable of handling three heavy media rolls. It can produce both colour and black and white prints on a wide range of media, from bond to glossy photo paper, with a low cost of operation comparable to monochrome LED printers. The HP Designjet SmartStream software makes print management more efficient by streamlining workflow for highly demanding print environments. It offers true PDF management, along with accurate and error-free prints with the HP Crystal Preview technology. It also can reduce job preparation time by up to 50 per cent on multipage print jobs. For IT managers, HP also introduced a new HP Designjet Universal Print Driver, which allows users to manage their entire HP Designjet fleet with a standardised single driver. This reduces the amount of time and cost in testing and deployment - and in keeping the software across all HP Designjet printers up to date. Customers also can increase efficiency with optional hardware accessories and software tools, such as the new HP Designjet HD Pro Scanner, stacker and online folder. Pricing and availability • Large-format HP PageWide printers will be available in the second half of 2015. • The HP Designjet T3500 Production eMFP is now available worldwide with an estimated starting list price of £9,995. • The HP Designjet T7200 Production Printer is currently available in the USA only. • The HP Designjet SmartStream Pre-Flight Manager and Controllers are expected to be available worldwide for an estimated starting list price of £840 and £420, respectively.. Canon launches wide format flatbed printer THE new Océ Arizona 6100 Series made its debut on the Canon stand at FESPA Digital in Munich. It is an entirely new Arizona series printer platform designed for sign and display print service providers who produce over 30,000m² of printed rigid media per year. Comprised of the six colour Océ Arizona 6160 XTS and the seven colour Océ Arizona 6170 XTS, the Océ Arizona 6100 Series extends the awardwinning technology of the Arizona range to a new level of productivity and, for the first time, gives the high volume rigid printing market access to Arizona print quality, application versatility and ease of use. With a focus on pure productivity, the Arizona 6100 Series has been optimised for the efficient and high speed production of rigid media applications. Designed as a dedicated flatbed system, the series features an extra large 2.5m x 3.05m vacuum table to keep media and objects stationary during printing for optimal print quality and rigid media application versatility. The true flatbed architecture supports the broadest range of rigid media applications, including printing on odd-shaped, heavy, smooth or pre-cut rigid media, the production of high value, multi-layer applications, double-sided prints in perfect register, large prints tiled over multiple boards with perfect geometry, and edge to edge printing without hassle or mess. The flatbed table has two independent printing zones, each with its own vacuum system, for simultaneous printing and media loading/unloading, so that one board can be always staged and ready, while the other is being printed, enabling non-stop production. Alternatively, the two zones can be combined into one to enable 2.5m x 3.05m prints. Pneumatic registration pins ensure a quick, repeatable, easy loading of rigid media in perfect register every time. Together with a high-flow vacuum system for effective pull-down of even warped rigid media, it means that the operator needs only seconds to load even the largest boards in perfect register. With media loading this easy, a single operator can service two printers simultaneously, producing

almost 50 boards per hour in production mode. With almost 27,000 piezoelectric nozzles in a seven row printing carriage, the Arizona 6100 Series rapidly and reliably produces inkjet print output at speeds up to 155m² per hour. A newly designed Automated Printhead Maintenance System provides completely automated, hands-free printhead cleaning in less than 25 seconds per colour, making the vast array of nozzles available and ready to print at any time. Employing the awardwinning Océ VariaDot printing technology as all other Arizona Series printers, the Océ Arizona 6100 Series also offers the same ‘near photographic’ print quality, while using light inks for reliable printing in even the fastest production modes. Finally, Active Pixel Placement Compensation, ensures that every pixel is adjusted to land exactly where intended for accurate, uniform print geometry over the entire flatbed. The Océ Arizona 6100 Series printers are easily expandable with two additional available ink channels for white ink application support and future use. A hardware/software interface allows for easy integration with thirdparty automation and workflow systems. “Delivering high speed without compromising on print quality, the Océ Arizona 6100 Series features new capabilities designed to ensure it is the most productive, most reliable and easiest to use Arizona printer ever,” said Duncan Smith, Director of Wide Format Group, Canon UK. “For a new group of customers who require high-volume rigid media printing capacity, it delivers award-winning print quality with the broad application range of a true flatbed architecture, enabling them to push the boundaries of their service offerings.” www.canon.co.uk

A Definitive Product Guide Launched by Pyramid IT’S hot off the press and available now. Pyramid Display Materials has created a monster 254 page product and pricing guide. It covers every sheet and roll product type used in the sign and display industry from rigid and flexible sheet, digital roll, MACtac self adhesives, through to print shop essentials. Containing over 500 application shots, 50 major industry leading brands and approaching 100 product ranges, Pyramid claim this product guide is the most comprehensive ever produced for the sign and display industry. The weighty volume also includes a guide to flatbed digital printing together with a unique pictorial application selector, an A-Z index containing both product types and brands through to an “At a Glance” double sided tape selector. Each product in the guide is also represented by graphical icons defining recyclability, recommended print and fabrication processes together with application recommendations. Neil McCarthy, Pyramid’s Head of Sales & Marketing explains the thinking and the hard work that has gone into producing this product guide. “The

guide has been 12 months in the making purely because we wanted to produce something unique that was really going to be useful to the market and our customers. We analysed our competitor’s offerings and it was obvious that we could improve on these but that it would take a lot of hard work. This encompassed many facets from application shots, colour swatches, technical recommendations and product links across the whole guide. The most work though was in the designing of the MACtac cad vinyl section of the guide as it shows every colour available in the complete MACtac range now stocked by Pyramid. We realised that just to list code numbers and colours in type doesn’t do justice to the full colour range available from MACtac hence, every actual colour has been printed on the page. We are more than pleased with the final result and I’m sure both our existing and potential customers will be” A printed copy of the new product guide can be ordered by e-mailing myproductguide@pyramid-display.co.uk or by contacting your local Pyramid sales office.

CSR CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Also referred to by our potential new business customers as corporate conscience, corporate citizenship, social performance, or sustainable responsible business ethics. We need to show proof of our responsibility as part of our customer’s own CSR credentials. It is all very contagious and although another hurdle before quoting is a serious commitment worth signing up to. The practice of corporate self-regulation integrated into a business model is right up our street. QPP policy models will confirm a firm’s implementation of CSR going beyond compliance and engaging in some social good, beyond the interests of the firm and that which is required by law. CSR is a process with the aim to embrace responsibility for the company’s actions and encourage a positive impact through its activities on the environment, consumers, employees, communities, stakeholders and all other members of the public who may also be considered stakeholders. Our initial draft has been blended from participating print businesses wishing to share for the common good. An editable copy will be sent to all new members of the print club during July.

22 | DIGITAL IMAGING | QUICK PRINT PRO | July-August 2014

Photographic Evidence

Digital imaging and digital printing has progressed so much more in the last decade and a half than the simple mathematical progression of years would suggest. In comparison it took conventional film nearly a century of development to achieve similar technical and universal dominance. Martin Christie scribes…

W

HEN THIS COLUMN started, around the turn of the century, film was still widely used as a medium for capturing images, and the print shop was still predominantly a copy shop. Copying was seen to be a fairly instant process, while film was understood to take time to process and reproduce. Everybody knew that. Pro labs in London and some major cities existed to service the press and other professionals who needed immediate results, but if you wanted your holiday snaps done you know you had to wait, at least a day, or pay a heavy premium for a same day service. The digital economy has done more than just make the capture and sharing of images an instant activity, it has changed people’s perceptions of time… and expectations of service. Because they can simply press a button on an App and make something happen in the virtual world, they come to assume the same speedy response is available for things in the real one. That and the expectation of a quality and consistency that is not always compatible with the time allowed to produce it. Working with the direct reproduction of originals made the issue very simple. What you saw was what you got, give or take a bit of tweaking with the colour and contrast buttons. And it was very easy to explain at the counter of the copy shop. Film was a bit more of a black art beyond the understanding of the general public. The reality was that there was no accurate consistency in colour, or at least a generous margin for variation. When I moved back here to Brighton I was still shooting film for brochure and general commercial work, and, as a test, I shot five rolls of print film of the same set, same settings, and dropped them off at five different processing outlets from a professional studio to a high street mini lab. All of them came back with different colours, as varied as the prices charged. In fact it was one of the cheaper, on-demand services that proved the most consistent. A little investigation found that the experienced member of staff in charge of the processing machine and printer was scrupulous in checking his settings and changing his chemicals regularly, rather than let them stew

long beyond their use by date to save money. These days the old chemical plants have largely been replaced by new dry lab technology, using inkjet or dye sublimation, so in theory there is less margin for error, unless of course you add in the human factor. In the years that have passed the machines available to us have improved in quality, speed etc, but the possibilities of pressing the wrong button or choosing the wrong option have developed along with them. Then there is still the inconsistency of quality through printers going out of calibration, and other maintenance or general usage issues. Even if everything is done correctly there is still the possibility that colours for example may not exactly match those produced previously because of updates in operating system, software or print drivers and paper profiles. Working with digital print on a daily basis, you are acutely aware of these possibilities, but are caught short when a customer is shocked that a particular print isn’t exactly the same shade of yellow as an identical file printed several years before. There is an assumption, in those that know no better, that a digital file is something solid, something real and inflexible rather than a jumble of digits that can be crunched when they collide with another series of digits. As one development engineer told me candidly in my early digital learning days, when you know what’s involved it’s amazing anything comes out at all, let alone be the right colour! As a photographer, the transition from film to digital was as painful as it was essential professionally. The instant nature of production meant previous lead-in times for work were unacceptable, but the culture shock of moving from a long developed understanding of how a 35mm camera saw the world, to guessing how a processor would interpret it was a real challenge. What helped the transition was working in printing, with both my own and customers files, much like working in the darkroom made a huge difference to the understanding of film and how it reacted to light and dark. What you learn is that you never stop learning, and the challenge is an almost daily

one, as there are so many possible variables, and almost certainly more still to be discovered. I do know a couple of photographers, much younger than me, who have refused to make this change, revelling in the excitement of real film. I can understand a certain dislike of electronic gadgets, and the pleasure of handling and loading a nice 35mm or a leisurely medium format. But what surprised me was learning that few of them actually process their own or any film. Fair enough to leave the difficult stuff to a pro lab, but there is no excuse not to dabble with basic black and white, and every reason to do so. Anyone who has watched an image emerge from a ghostly apparition into a crisp print in the developing tray will know there is a bit of magic there, as well as a fair bit of personal satisfaction. As much as I love my Epson 7890, I must admit it’s not the same watching a large format inkjet print come out, partly because you are expecting it to be right rather than hoping it’s not gone wrong. The problem with digital printing is that when it isn’t right, there are a lot more things that could be to blame, and a number of them not immediately obvious. In the darkroom it was usually a much more simple matter of altering the developing time under the lamp or in the bath. The basics of available light and exposure time were the only essentials of understanding film, and being involved in the whole process of production was a massive advantage to the conventional photographer. If you can understand potential issues, you should be able to avoid them, or compensate for them, at point of capture. This was important because a conventional film camera did not do your thinking for you. Even when, in the later years of 35mm, auto focus and preset exposure modes became standard issue, the photographer still had to exercise a fair amount of judgement to get consistently good results. Consistently is one of the key words. Now with digital technology, the device is able to take a much more decisive role in the whole photographic process, to the degree that the user may have little control or any essential knowledge of the results. So we have the simple fact that anyone can take a good picture once, and probably will unless they are very unlucky. The problem is that without the knowledge, they won’t know how. This isn’t a problem for the vast majority of images that are now sharing on mobile devices or social networks, and will stay there. It’s only a problem, as we know, when they want to be turned into hard copy print. This is where the cloud world comes crashing to the ground. This will be a familiar theme to regular readers, but I am going over old ground because I am conscious that print shops will have new members of staff for whom this little bit of history will be worth repeating. To understand where we are, you need to know a little about where we have come from. Even as I type this I can hear a conversation with a customer who has a photo that needs printing. To me, my first instinct would suggest that this would be a hard copy photo print, that might need scanning, but it could be anything from an image on their phone to a life sized print in an oak frame.

It might even be positive film that needs special attention. I’ve even had a customer bring in glass negatives made in Victorian times found in an old shoe box! How can you even quote without exploring all the possibilities? Until video phones become common in use, it’s impossible to judge what a customer actually wants at your end of the phone from what they think they are describing at their end. It’s this perception of what is or is not a photo that is at the centre of the matter. Traditionally, photo prints were left to the mini lab processors. But as they, along with high street photo chains like Jessups, have been disappearing, a big gap in the market has opened up which only a digital print shop can fill. Many will probably have a small photo printer already from Sony, or Mitsubishi for example. They mostly use the dye sublimation method which uses heat to fuse coloured toner sheet onto special photo paper. These come in sizes up to A4, and are very accurate and reliable, producing a high quality image with a glossy lamination, so they are instantly dry and scratch proof. The downside is that you are limited to the type of paper used, as it is produced uniquely for each model, and the media is relatively expensive. The upside is that they are very easy for anyone to operate, rarely go wrong, and have very little wastage. An A4 print out of one of these machines would cost about £1.50 and takes around a minute and a half to print. The smaller, 4x6in printers, are much faster. The point is that these are genuinely seen as actual photographic prints, and can be charged at a premium, compared to standard digital toner, at around £5, for example for the A4. Another option is to use an inkjet. This is much more flexible as a larger inkjet printer, A3 or larger still, can take a much wider range of media, including canvas and other specialist papers. The media, whether roll or sheet, is also proportionately cheaper, particularly as larger sheets can be cut down, and multiple images nested to make efficient use of the paper. Most mini dry labs now use inkjet printers as an integral part of their machinery. What has made the difference is that modern printer heads, inks and media have improved so much that they really can produce a finish that most people would regard as photographic. We recently did a large print run for a client that we had previously passed on to to a local photo lab because we couldn’t compete on price and quality, and worked out we could bring the actual cost of printing a high quality A4 print down to about 50p, using Innova 260gsm Glossy Photo paper roll. There’s no drying time with modern papers, so they can be handled immediately without scuffing or scratching, and using heavier weight means less chance of creasing. The heavier grade papers are actually easier to handle overall. The inkjet printer has tended to be reserved for particular jobs, whether a simple four colour plan printer, or a more sophisticated multi-colour fine art device, but it can be so much more adaptable, especially as the market place seems to have moved in its favour. You may already have one, and not thought of using it more for general printing. Next month I’ll take a broader look at the wide range of media available, as well as other options in the photographic mark

Is Greenwashing returning?

ARE Banks reneging on promises to move away from misleading environmental marketing? It was reported in the Daily Mail, that leading banks and utilities are continuing to charge consumers for paper bills and statements and drive people down a less expensive and, for many consumers, a less convenient digital alternative. Santander Bank is reported as claiming that online bills offer a… ‘more environmental approach’ and Royal Bank of Scotland, who has previously undertaken to remove such claims, are arguing that there is “an environmental cost to paper statements”. Organisations like NatWest, Lloyds TSB and American Express, despite assurances, have allowed environmental statements to reappear in their marketing campaigns. Two Sides responds to these developments. Two Sides, which represent The Graphic Communications Industries, is concerned that incorrect and damaging impressions are being given out by irresponsible environmental marketing claims. Whilst they clearly see the efficiency of electronic communications and encourage the reduction of waste in these initiatives, it is highly irresponsible to try to gain credibility by promoting digital communications as ‘green’. Switching to digital may, on the surface, appear less energy intensive but it has a significant and growing environmental footprint that must not be underestimated. The UK Committee of Advertising Practice states in rule 11.4: “Marketers must ensure claims that are based on only part of the advertised product’s life cycle do not mislead consumers about the product’s total environmental impact.” Claims cannot be made if they are misleading or cannot be substantiated by evidence coming from a trustworthy, credible or relevant source. ‘Going Paperless’ is also highly misleading. It is important to recognise that consumers often print copies of their online documents to create a permanent record. In a study conducted on behalf of Two Sides in 2013, which investigated printing habits of consumers in the UK, it was revealed that 38% of consumers are clearly ‘home printers’ with 26% printing up to 20% of their bills and 7% printing out between 80% and 100% of their bills. It must be realised that whilst distribution of bills and statements by e-mail decreases the amount and cost of paper used by the billing company, the amount and cost of paper used will pass to the consumer if they wish to print their document. If any organisation wishes to claim that moving to digital is more environmentally friendly than the paper version, it would be necessary to have fully investigated and researched the exact impact of the paper based communication compared to the electronic replacement. Such comparisons are notoriously difficult. Sometimes billers quote lifecycle analysis in comparing online with paper bills but it can be amply supported by research, that generic life-cycle assessment (LCA) calculators which rely on industry-wide data to draw broad conclusions about the environmental impacts of paper cannot be used for specific cases. For example, if Santander and Royal Bank of Scotland wish to switch to electronic bills and statements, each would have to provide a detailed and comparative lifecycle analysis taking account of their individual electronic and paper processes, user behaviour, and manufacturing and distribution impacts. It is increasingly clear that electronic communication, and in particular the energy requirements of the increasing worldwide network of servers which are necessary to store all the information needed for immediate access, has a significant and growing carbon footprint. Electronic document storage must be recognised as delivering efficiency but not sustainability. In the UK it has been suggested that PCs and servers may consume up to 50% of household energy requirements in the next 10 years. Two Sides continues to campaign that the environment is not used as an argument to persuade consumers to go digital. 80% of all the major UK banks, utilities and telecoms undertook to change their messages and removed referenced to the environment. It is disappointing that Santander and Bank of Scotland continue to use environmental messages to further a lower cost digital switch. It is clear that organisations using environmental marketing but without the necessary evidence are at risk of being reported to the Advertising Standards authority for what is commonly known as Greenwashing. www.twosides.info

FOGRA testing proves 82% energy savings with EFI’s VUTEk LED Printers

ENERGY assessments carried out by Fogra have confirmed that EFI’s VUTEk wide-format printers with LED curing show energy reductions of up to 82% when compared with devices that use conventional mercury arc lamps. Even in print ready mode, the company’s LX printers with “cool curing” LEDs are now shown to save up to 77% in electricity usage, simply because the LEDs are off, unlike mercury arc lamps which still consume power when the machine is idle between jobs. The calculations of Fogra’s Energy Efficiency Project (“Energy efficiency of large and small format printing systems”) have demonstrated that users can save around €16,000 every year on power consumption, an important factor for businesses pricing up jobs on both rigid and flexible materials. Fogra’s comparisons with digital printers using conventional curing lamps showed that the former used 1.18kW/m2 while EFI’s VUTEk GS3250LX Pro used only 0.22 kW/m2. This impressive scoring adds to the functional flexibility incorporated into EFI’s LED-curing printers, with their ability to work with thinner and more sensitive materials, as well as lower cost media. “EFI has pioneered the use of LEDs in its growing series of production class wide-format printers with ‘cool curing’, and Fogra’s analysis provides conclusive evidence of the additional savings and green benefits that can be attained by businesses investing in our technology,” states Scott Schinlever, senior vice president and general manager of EFI Inkjet Solutions. “Although we thoroughly tested and assessed the lower energy usage when we originally developed these printers, the results from Fogra now provide third-party and impartial confirmation of the significantly reduced power requirements. While others claim green benefits, their use of heat to cure and having thicker substrates runs counter to being green.” The evaluations carried out employed Fogra’s “Image Quality Test Suite” for printing, with typical production and stand-by/print ready modes being used. The conditions were configured to emulate both highest productivity and greatest quality, incorporating the relevant machine combinations for accurate results. “I would like to thank EFI for the great support during our research project. We found out that the used print mode heavily contributes to the final energy efficiency (m2/kWh). However when using agreed upon parameters, as in our developed guideline, the significant savings of LED based curing can be demonstrated,” says Andreas Kraushaar, head of Fogra’s Prepress Technology Department. “ The objective of Fogra Forschungsgesellschaft Druck e.V. (Fogra Graphic Technology Research Association) is to promote print engineering and its future-oriented technologies in the fields of research and development, and to enable the printing industry to utilise the results of this activity. To this end the association maintains its own institute, with about 60 staff members including engineers, chemists and physicists. www.fogra.org/EnergyEfficiency/Digital www.efi.com

Boost business with FREE Ecommerce tool NEOPOST has announced that it has joined the Keep Me Posted campaign. Keep Me Posted is a partnership of representatives from charities, interest groups and businesses who believe that it is every consumer’s right to choose, without disadvantage, how they are contacted by banks and other financial service companies, utilities and media companies and other service providers. Increasingly businesses are restricting access to paper bills and statements and denying their customers an informed choice. Independent research demonstrates that 81% of adults want to choose how they receive important information such as bills and statements. David Beirne, Postal Relationship Manager, Neopost commented “We at Neopost recognise the importance of choice in the way consumers

and businesses are communicated with, particularly in relation to statement and billing information. Customers should be given the choice of free regular paper bills and statements and not be forced into a situation where they are penalised financially or otherwise if they request billing/statement information in a paper format – or worse, not have the choice at all. While the advancement in digital communication has been good for business, it must be remembered that not all can take advantage of these advances. To this end Neopost are proud to support the aims of the Keep Me Posted campaign.”

Judith Donovan, chair, Keep Me Posted, said, “Many utility companies have already made a distinct shift away from monthly paper billing and towards a preference for online services. There is no doubt that many businesses, in their drive for greater efficiency and cost savings, have forgotten to take their customers with them on that journey. Not all consumers are currently ready, willing or even able to communicate with companies solely through digital means. “I’m delighted that Neopost has joined the Keep Me Posted campaign. Their support adds a strong voice to the growing number of charities, businesses and consumer groups supporting the campaign.” To find out more about the Keep Me Posted campaign visit www.keepmeposteduk.com, www.neopost.co.uk

KEEPERS! A man started a new job at a zoo. He was given his first job by the zoo owner – to clean out the large tropical fish tank, which contained many exotic species. While removing some gravel from the tank with his spade, he accidently hit one of the fish and killed it. Worried about losing his job for this mistake, he decided to hide the evidence. He took the fish and fed it to the lions because lions eat anything. The zoo owner did not notice the missing fish and gave the man a new job – to muck out the chimps. He was in the middle of mucking out when two of the chimps became a bit over familiar and, in an attempt to get them away the man lashed out with his spade, killing two chimps. In his panic he decided to hide the evidence and fed the unfortunate chimpanzees to the lions because lions eat anything. The zoo owner was pleased with the man’s work and as his final task for the day he asked him to collect honey from the zoo’s beehives. The

man tried hard to do this without upsetting the bees, but some got angry and stung him. He grabbed his spade and whirled it above his head, squashing and killing several dozen bees. Plagued with guilt, he fed these to the lions as well because lions eat anything. The next day, a new lion arrived at the zoo. He enquired of the existing residents “what’s the food like here?” One of the zoo’s resident lions said, “Oh, it’s great. Only yesterday we had fish, chimps and mushy bees.”

TWO STATUES There are these two statues in a park; one of a nude man and one of a nude woman. They had been facing each other across a pathway for a hundred years, when one day an angel comes down from the sky and, with a single gesture, brings the two to life. The angel tells them, ‘As a reward for being so patient through a hundred blazing summers and dismal winters, you have been given life for thirty minutes to do what you’ve wished to do the most.’ He looks at her, she looks at him, and they go running behind the shrubbery. The angel waits patiently as the bushes rustle and giggling ensues. After fifteen minutes, the two return, out of breath and laughing. The angel tells them, ‘Um, you have fifteen minutes left. Would you care to do it again?’ He asks her, ‘Shall we?’ She eagerly replies, ‘Oh, yes, let’s! But let’s change positions. This time: I hold the pigeon down and you crap on its head!’

CONFESSIONS OF A COPIER SALESMAN Never under any circumstances take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night. If you had to identify, in one word, the reason why the human race has not achieved, and never will achieve, its full potential, that word would be ‘meetings.’ You should not confuse your career with your life. No matter what happens, somebody will find a way to take it too seriously. When trouble arises and things look bad, there is always one individual who perceives a solution and is willing to take command. Very often, that individual is crazy. Nobody cares if you can’t dance well. Just get up and dance. You should never say anything to a woman that even remotely suggests that you think she’s pregnant unless you can see an actual baby emerging from her at that moment. There comes a time when you should stop expecting other people to make a big deal about your

birthday. That time is age 27. The one thing that unites all human beings, regardless of age, gender, religion, economic status or ethnic background, is that, deep down inside, we ALL believe that we are above average drivers. The main accomplishment of almost all organised ‘jollies’ is to annoy people who are not in them.

THE HONEYMOON A mother had three virgin daughters. They were all getting married within a short time period. Because Mum was a bit worried about how their sex life would get started, she made them all promise to send a postcard from the honeymoon with a few words on how marital sex felt. The first girl sent a card from Hawaii two days after the wedding. The card said nothing but ‘Maxwell House’. Mum was puzzled at first, but then went to the kitchen and got out the Maxwell House jar. It said: ‘Good till the last drop.’ Mum blushed, but was pleased for her daughter. The second girl sent the card from Vermont a week after the wedding, and the card read: ‘Benson and Hedges’. Mum now knew to go straight to her husband’s cigarettes, and she read from the Benson and Hedges pack: ‘Extra Long. King Size’. She was again slightly embarrassed, but still happy for her daughter. The third girl left for her honeymoon in the Caribbean. Mum waited for a week, nothing. Another week went by and still nothing. Then after a whole month, a card finally arrived. Written on it with shaky handwriting were the words ‘British Airways’. Mum took out her latest Sunday news magazines, flipped through the pages fearing the worst, and finally found the ad for BA. The ad said: ‘Three times a day, seven days a week, both ways.’

HR TRICKS HOW TO PROPERLY PLACE NEW EMPLOYEES… 1. Put 400 bricks in a closed room. 2. Put your new hires in the room and close the door. 3. Leave them alone and come back after six hours. 4. Then analyse the situation: a. If they are counting the bricks, put them in the Accounting Department. b. If they are recounting them, put them in Auditing. c. If they have messed up the whole place with the bricks, put them in Engineering.

d. If they are arranging the bricks in some strange order, put them in Planning. e. If they are throwing the bricks at each other, put them in Operations. f. If they are sleeping, put them in Security. g. If they have broken the bricks into pieces, put them in Information Technology. h. If they are sitting idle, put them in Human Resources. i. If they say they have tried different combinations, they are looking for more, yet not a brick has been moved, put them in Sales. j. If they have already left for the day, put them in Management. k. If they are staring out of the window, put them in Strategic Planning. l. If they are talking to each other, and not a single brick has been moved, congratulate them and put them in Top Management. m. Finally, if they have surrounded themselves with bricks in such a way that they can neither be seen nor heard from, put them in parliament.

IT’S A JUNGLE OUT THERE The animals were bored. Finally, the lion had an idea. “I know a really exciting game that the humans play called American football. I’ve seen it on T.V.” He proceeded to describe it to the rest of the animals and they all got excited about it so they decided to play. They went out to the field and chose up teams and were ready to begin. The lion’s team received. They were able to get two first downs and then had to punt. The mule punted and the rhino was back deep for the kick. He caught the ball, lowered his head and charged. First, he crushed a roadrunner, then two rabbits. He gored a wildebeest, knocked over two cows, and broke through to daylight, scoring six.

Roy Hodgson has set up a friendly match…

Unfortunately, they lacked a placekicker, and the score remained 6 - 0. Late in the first half the lion’s team scored a touchdown and the mule kicked the extra point. The lion’s team led at halftime 7 - 6. In the locker room, the lion gave a pep talk. “Look you guys. We can win this game. We’ve got the lead and they only have one real threat. We’ve got to keep the ball away from the rhino, he’s a killer. Mule, when you kick off be sure to keep it away from the rhino.” The second half began. Just as the mule was about to kick off, the rhino’s team changed formation and the ball went directly to the rhino. Once again, the rhino lowered his head and was off running. First, he stomped two gazelles. He skewered a zebra, and bulldozed an elephant out of the way. It looked like he was home free. Suddenly at the twentyyard line, he dropped over dead. There were no other animals in sight anywhere near him. The lion went over to see what had happened. Right next to the dead rhino he saw a small centipede. “Did you do this?” he asked the centipede. “Yeah, I did.” the centipede replied. The lion retorted, “Where were you during the first half?” “I was putting on my shoes.”

AN ACCIDENT REPORT I am writing in response to your request for “additional information.” In block number 30 of the accident report form, I put “poor planning” as the cause for my accident. You said in your last letter that I should explain more fully. I trust that the following detail will be sufficient. I am an amateur radio operator. On the day of the accident, I was working alone on the top section of my new 80-foot antenna tower. When I completed my work, I discovered that I had, over the course of several trips up the tower, brought about 300 lbs. of tools and spare hardware. Rather than carry the now unneeded tools and materials down by hand, I decided to lower the items

for the England team against Iceland.

in a small barrel by using a pulley, which fortunately was attached to the pole at the tip of the tower. Securing the rope at ground level, I went up to the top of the tower and loaded the tools and materials into the barrel. Then I went back to the ground and untied the rope, holding it tightly to insure a slow descent of the 300 lbs. of tools. You will note in block number 11 of the accident report form that I weigh 155 lbs. Due to my surprise at being jerked off the ground so suddenly, I lost my presence of mind and forgot to let go of the rope. Needless to say, I proceeded at a rapid rate up the side of the tower. In the vicinity of the 40-foot level, I met the barrel coming down. This explains my fractured skull and broken clavicle. Slowed only slightly, I continued my rapid ascent, not stopping until the fingers of my right hand were two knuckles deep into the pulley. Fortunately by this time I had regained my presence of mind and was able to hold tightly on the rope in spite of the pain. At about the same time however, the barrel hit the ground. The bottom fell out of the barrel. Devoid of the weight of the tools, the barrel now weighed 20 pounds. I refer you again to my weight in block number 11. As you might guess, I began a rapid descent down the side of the tower. In the vicinity of the 40-foot level, I met the barrel coming up. This accounts for the two fractured ankles and the lacerations or my legs and lower body. The encounter with the barrel slowed me enough to lessen my injuries when I fell into the pile of tools, and fortunately only three vertebras were cracked. I am sorry to report, however, that as I lay there on the tools in pain, unable to stand, and watching the empty barrel 80 feet above me, I again lost my presence of mind. I let go of the rope…

If they win that game, they’ll play Tesco next Saturday

LISTEN VERY CAREFULLY… A nursery pupil told his teacher he’d found a cat, but it was dead. “How do you know that the cat was dead?” she asked her pupil. “Because I pissed in its ear and it didn’t move,” answered the child innocently. “You did WHAT?!” the teacher exclaimed in surprise. “You know,” explained the boy, “I leaned over and went ‘Pssst!’ and it didn’t move.”

PEOPLE AND PETS What is a Cat? 1. Cats do what they want. 2. They rarely listen to you. 3. They’re totally unpredictable. 4. When you want to play, they want to be alone. 5. When you want to be alone, they want to play. 6. They expect you to cater to their every whim. 7. They’re moody. 8. They leave hair everywhere. Conclusion: They are tiny women in little fur coats. What is a Dog? 1. Dogs spend all day sprawled on the most comfortable piece of furniture in the house. 2. They can hear a package of food opening half a block away, but don’t hear you when you’re in the same room. 3. They can look dumb and lovable all at the same time. 4. They growl when they are not happy. 5. When you want to play, they want to play. 6. When you want to be alone, they want to play. 7. They leave their toys everywhere. 8. They do disgusting things with their mouths and then try to give you a kiss. 9. They go right to your crotch as soon as they meet you. Conclusion: They are tiny men in little fur coats.

…and then Asda on Wednesday!
