New Features Editor: Directions Please QPP are pleased to introduce Nick Hancock, our latest roving reporter who will lead the features team into places in print no man has been before. Nick is a hugely respected member of the print industry and has pioneered digital printing since its infancy of glorified photocopying, to today’s first choice in tactile communications. Nick is available to report on new products, print company news, and visit exhibitions and events on behalf of the QPP 36,000 quick print professional membership. Many of our favourite print partner suppliers will know Nick through his activities in the BPIF, BAPC, PICON, APCOM, The Printing Charity, IPIA, APME and the Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers. More recently, Nick has been studying with Beeches Consultancy into best practice for printers when planning for business continuity and disaster recovery.

QPP first met Nick with his Konica Minolta hat on in the early noughties where as their business development manager he helped build the KM professional print division. Before then you may remember him from Danka or Sharp in the nineties, or earlier still at Xerox or Kodak. So many years in customer care has resulted in an all round print minder who enjoys helping quick print professionals. No better place to put a shift in then, than sharing all with Quick Print Pro. Your help please in pointing our team towards all your new products and print discoveries. During the ten weeks after the summer double issue goes to bed next week, we will be working between the sheets as it were, and then it is back to our monthly magazine for September. Meanwhile the website news is updated daily and regular e-newsletters will be delivered directly to our members. Please get involved and keep Nick and our other roving reporters, Becky, Dan, Lara, Martin, Maureen, Peter and Vanessa, in the loop, so we can share with our 6,600 Quick Print Professional businesses. Creative Shop, Isle of Man, gets all ‘revved up’ INTEC’S partner GNP/Fastek in Yorkshire recently made a sale of a ColorSplash 4100 with a Fiery RIP to ‘Creative Shop’ in Douglas, Isle of Man. Intec’s service engineer, Roger Ginnaw, installed the kit and got it all ‘race-tuned’ and ready to go! Simon Brown the MD of ‘Creative Shop’, was looking for a versatile solution to add value to their current print portfolio of products, which includes a large format printer along with Ricoh production printer; the Intec machine hit the spot! Simon told Peter Swann of Intec, “The new printer has given me the opportunity to print banners in the future, along with posters for the

forthcoming Isle of Man TT race. I also want to print cards and other heavy media. The quality of printing is superb and it’s a great entry level unit for printers wanting to expand upon the media they can print on to.” The TT race started in early June, and the installation of the Intec was completed successfully in advance of the event! “Really looking forward to printing on heavy stocks and also personalising customers photos into memorable posters.” — Simon Brown — Creative Shop, Isle of Man. www.intecprinters.com

Students discover digital print at Hybrid Services MIMAKI’S distributor, Hybrid Services has played host for the second year running to graphic design students from its local educational institution, South Cheshire College. After a complete showroom rebrand from students in 2014, this year the 16-18 year olds were given an exclusive free run of Hybrid’s extensive showroom; and the complete Sign & Graphics and Industrial Products portfolio of Mimaki printers in order to create finished products from their own designs. Hybrid’s national sales manager for Sign & Graphics, John de la Roche welcomed the opportunity to host the students again; “We are proud to continue to be a learning partner to South Cheshire College and it is a great opportunity for us to give experience in wide format printing to the next generation of designers who may be coming into the industry over the next few years. It’s important to do our bit to preserve the future of print and show young people exactly what the current Mimaki technology is capable of and what this means for them in graphic design terms.” “This year the students each created a unique piece of design within the areas of surface pattern or digital imaging and the depth and range of the work achieved was outstanding,” continues de la Roche. “It was fantastic to witness the responses of the students as they got to see everything from

the newly released Mimaki CJV150-75 entry level printer-cutter up to the grand format JFX200 LED UV flatbed bring their designs to life. This ‘real’ life

experience is invaluable for them as they move on to further qualifications or out into the workplace.” The extensive Mimaki showroom at Hybrid is held within its headquarters in Crewe, Cheshire and is home to a raft of wide format printers and cutters, including solvent, UV, latex and SUV ranges with an abundance of possible applications achievable. The students brought their own designs along and, under the watchful eye of Hybrid’s print technicians and training team, worked through the entire printing process, from Mimaki’s Rasterlink RIP package through to printing and finishing. Assistant Director for the Arts and Media at South Cheshire College, Laura Sumner commented on the value of the project for the students; “It has been a great opportunity for the graphic design students to see their ideas through to an end product. They have gained tremendous perspective from the experience at Hybrid and it has given them confidence to think further about where design can take them, especially in relation to the printing industry.” www.hybridservices.co.uk or for further information about South Cheshire College visit www.scc.ac.uk.

‘Big Pete’ Colman full of praise for Vivid’s new vinyl MANSFIELD based Classic Print has been in business since 1984 and in that time they have seen many innovations and developments, especially in the materials that are available to the wide format printer. The most recent development came when Vivid’s product manager Lewis Evans approached Pete to try their new Boss range of printable medias, and with Pete already using Boss laminates, he was happy to do so. Pete first dealt with Vivid in 2007, buying the award-winning Easymount laminator, “It’s run constantly to this day with never a single issue” said Pete. He has found the results of the vinyl impressive and moved over to using the Boss range, benefiting from their great prices “The printing and mounting qualities are excellent” continued Pete “It lies flat and print quality is perfect”. The range is available in various widths and finishes; gloss, clear and matt. With permanent and removable adhesive, Vivid’s newest product is their Boss ‘Smooth Remove’ which has air release technology making the vinyl extremely easy to work with when applying. “This new vinyl is really versatile” continued Pete. “The profiles that Vivid offer for the vinyl are an industry standard for this type of media and the laminate that matches the vinyl is excellent. We print straight on to the vinyl with the Roland or HP and then laminate using the Easymount. The Easymount is a superior system in my opinion. It’s a heavy duty piece of kit and runs true and square

every time. You have full control on whatever you are laminating and mounting.” Vivid’s Lewis Evans said “We were given the guided tour by Big Pete and they have a fantastic set-up. Their custom-built showroom has a great range of products to view and it really gives their customers a hands-on experience of all the different prints they provide. We were really impressed with their engraved products, the finish is superb”. Classic Print has also recently purchased a 5m

wide Trimfast Board Cutter from Vivid. “We have a 3.6m wide cutter, but we are doing so many larger prints we knew we needed a 5m cutter. The Trimfast will be a huge help to us, as anything over 3.6m is currently being cut by hand and when we are completing large orders for trade and retail customers, accuracy and speed are important”. For more information on Boss Vinyl, visit www. vivid-online.com or call 0845 1 30 40 50. Classic Print can be contacted on 01623 661457 or by visiting www.classicprint.co.uk

Canon demand for imagePRESS C800 Series CANON has shipped over 1,400 units of the imagePRESS C800 series to customers across Europe in the ten months since it began taking orders for the production press in July last year. Thanks to this exceptional demand, Canon secured the leading share of the cut sheet colour production press market in Europe in the last quarter of 2014 Comprising two models – the 70ppm imagePRESS C700 and the 80ppm imagePRESS C800 – the C800 series incorporates a combination of proven technology from the flagship Canon imagePRESS C7011VP(S) with innovations, such as, Consistently Vivid (CV) toner, Compact Registration Technology (CRT), Auto Correct Colour Tone (ACCT) and a Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL). This has enabled the presses to deliver advanced levels of print quality, productivity and versatility in both commercial and in-house print environments. Feedback from satisfied customers across Europe indicates that the success of the devices is due to a number of factors — the quality of colour reproduction, flexibility and the high levels of productivity achievable. Rob Exton, the owner and managing director of UK commercial printer, Print by Design, added:

“Seven years ago, I was one of the first Canon imagePRESS owners in the UK. I’ve had a number of models since and for me the C700 is the best yet — the print quality is superb, the back-toback registration is stunning and consistently so, and because of its small footprint, I’ve saved a significant amount of money on rent and rates. The C700 is also very reliable – we’ve done a substantial volume of SRA3 in two months and only needed to call out a technician once.” Presenting an even more attractive proposition for print service providers, the series has now been certified a FograCert Validation Printing System by German research association, Fogra, in line with the requirements of ISO 12647-8:2012. Certified in four configurations (imagePRESS C800 with imagePRESS Server F200/PRISMAsync

controllers; imagePRESS C700 with imagePRESS Server F200/PRISMAsync controllers), users of any of these workflows can be confident of repeatedly producing output of the highest quality, colour accuracy and consistency. Commenting on the success of the imagePRESS C800 series, Mark Lawn, Director, Professional Print Solutions, Canon Europe said, “From the conversations we’d had with customers, we knew that the market was in need of a device offering the superior print quality, reliability and flexibility of the imagePRESS C800 series. The remarkable sales of the series to date and the subsequent wave of positive feedback we’ve received, confirm that Canon has again delivered on its promise to help customers to meet the changing demands of their own customers and to maintain a competitive advantage. “To add even greater value, we’ve also worked with Fogra to have the series certified as a FograCert Validation Printing System. Using any one of the four certified configurations, customers can be assured that their press will produce consistent and measurable quality and allow them more easily and profitably to meet the demand for high quality print.” www.canon.co.uk

New range of PVC card finishes EXAPRINT UK, an exclusive online print platform for print professionals and graphic designers has introduced a range of 12 new finishes to its PVC cards, which are ideal for use as business cards, loyalty cards or as tools in wider marketing campaigns. The firm, which provides white-labelled print solutions for resellers, has developed its product portfolio with the introduction of 12 new PVC finishes, including snakeskin effect, gloss pearlescent and scratch off capacity, all of which can be combined to provide a variety of finishes that help businesses and marketeers stand out from the competition. Simon Cooper, Managing Director of Exaprint UK, commented: “We’re really excited about the latest introduction to our project range. The level of variety afforded by the PVC finishes we’re able to offer means businesses and marketeers can be extremely creative with any prospective marketing material, be it business cards, loyalty cards or when creating something for specific marketing needs.” The twelve options introduced allow for gold and silver foiling, 3D spot UV varnishing, embossing and gloss pearlescent finishes. Alongside this, additions such as writable areas, magnetic strips and scratch off panels can be incorporated. The introduction of a snakeskin finish allows for a combination

of aesthetic and textural appeal, which provides excellent opportunity for standout design. The PVC card finishes can also incorporate variable data, meaning it’s possible to provide high runs of customised cards that display specific wording or numerals. For instance, when combined with embossing, personalised data can be presented on the cards in the manner of credit cards, allowing marketers to be even more creative in their approach. The cards can also be cut into any shape and include circle or oblong holes, as well as being produced using transparent PVC, which provides myriad design options for businesses and marketeers to employ.

Simon Cooper said: “Customers are looking for stand-out, that goes without saying. Business cards in particular are hugely important when looking to create the right perception of your brand. It’s often the first glimpse of what you’ve got to offer, so it’s essential that you get it right. The range of finishes available offers huge scope for differentiation, meaning you’re well equipped to make your own mark.” He added: “The same can be said for other marketing material options. Loyalty cards can be created distinct to your brand and even eyecatching hotel key cards are a possibility, whilst the inclusion of variable data allows for even greater diversity. We can cater for all sorts of needs and requirements thanks to the wide variety we’re able to offer. With unusual prospects such as the ability to include scratch panels, we can provide great opportunities for marketeers looking to display an innovative approach and create a distinctive style.” Simon concluded: “We’re constantly looking to update our product range to suit our customer’s requirements and this is yet another example of that. With businesses and marketeers aiming to appear cutting-edge, our products also need to reflect that level of forward-thinking. www.exaprint.co.uk

Kaymar leads the way with new Mimaki CJV150 PRESTON-BASED Kaymar Print has become one of the first print businesses in the country to install the innovative new Mimaki CJV150-107 integrated printer/cutter, as it seeks to diversify its already vast offering to customers. Everyone in the wide format sector appreciates the sheer versatility and opportunities offered up by digital print, but outside the sector there is perhaps less recognition of the benefits and certainly as far as the customer or the general public is concerned, much is taken for granted. One business that has adopted a rather more open-minded approach, in its determination not to let the ‘grass grow under its feet’ however is Kaymar Print in Preston. Originally established in 1946, Kaymar remains a privately owned printing service under the management of Mark Brindle, who has retained key personnel with many years of printing expertise. Boasting the ability to provide amongst other things, both litho and screen print services, Kaymar has pretty much every print requirement covered, but is equally keen to stay ahead of the game by employing state-of-the-art technology to complement these more traditional skills. Brindle is particularly proud of his latest investment, which sees the business steal a march on many of its competitors by becoming one of the very first to install a new Mimaki CJV150-107, as he explains; “With almost seven decades of experience in the print industry we’ve developed considerable levels of expertise in a wide range of different print processes, many of which have become a long forgotten skill set for other similar businesses. However, we’re always looking for new and exciting ways to diversify and to offer our customers more interesting and creative solutions to their requirements.”

This ethos had seen Kaymar take an early foray into digital print with a couple of Konica sheet fed machines running both mono and colour. However, the company always had an eye on the speed of development in the sector and was very keen to add to its print arsenal when the new Mimaki was first launched. As he continues; “The team at Granthams in Preston were particularly helpful in explaining the individual benefits of various different machines, but the CJV150-107 just stood out as the perfect tool for our needs. The ease with which it can produce banners and large format posters of the very highest quality is simply amazing. Its speed and accuracy makes this a brilliantly effective piece of kit which is both productive and highly profitable. Its versatility is quite awesome and its print and cut capability also enables us to produce PVC labelling and self adhesive stickers for our customers with real ease.” Kaymar has developed a very eclectic mix of different customers over the years from sole-traders right through to large corporate businesses and public sector organisations. The company’s development into high quality digital print has also opened up new revenue streams, by being able to produce items as diverse as large format signage and reflective road safety signage. He concluded; “As a commercial print supplier we need to continually raise our game, building on our wealth of traditional print expertise by taking our offering to new, more creative and productive levels. The CJV150-107’s combination of speed, quality, and multiple functionality, including print and cut, all in one neat package, has proved a real winner for Kaymar and we’re really proud to be one of the first businesses in the country to have taken delivery of one of these fantastic machines.” www.kaymarprint.com • www.hybridservices.co.uk

Epson launches commercial label printer EPSON is launching the ColorWorks C7500 compact colour label printer which has been developed to help quick print providers meet a wide variety of on-demand, customised labelling requirements. The new ColorWorks C7500 incorporates Epson’s new permanent PrecisionCore Micro TFP line printhead which has been specifically developed for use in the commercial-grade, industrial labelling market and which lasts for the lifetime of the printer. This printhead - Epson’s most advanced ensures excellent reliability alongside the ability to print 600 x 1200dpi quality labels on a wide variety of materials, including matte, gloss and synthetic media, in a wide range of formats and sizes up to four inches wide at a fast 300mm/sec. Sharp, high-quality results are achieved through the use of Variable Sized Droplet Technology (VSDT) which produces ink droplets in a range of precisely controlled sizes. In addition, Nozzle Verification Technology and dot substitution helps prevent misprints and dead pixels to ensure consistent printouts. The C7500 uses Epson DURABrite Ultra pigment ink in high-capacity 300ml cartridges to give fast-drying labels that are smudge, water and fade resistant. The printer is easy to use, integrates into most operating systems and features an auto-cutter as standard and an optional rewinder for roll-to-roll printing. “With the C7500 professional printers can now produce outstanding quality, individually-customised colour labels in-house, on-demand, at a low cost per label and without the costs associated with producing and stocking pre-printed labels for secondary overprinting,” says David Spratt, Head of Business Systems, Epson UK. “It is the ultimate in short-run colour printing for those for who want the flexibility in-house to reliably meet their label printing needs. It eliminates the costs associated with pre-printing, by producing short run, customised labels on demand for a variety of applications such as product packaging, food, beverages, EU Energy Labels and GHS labels.” The launch of the ColorWorks C7500 consolidates Epson’s position in the label industry as the company offering the broadest range of digital labelling printers for the widest range of applications. Epson offers a choice of label printers and presses including handheld label makers for the office, desktop colour inkjet

label printers for specialised ‘on-demand’ applications such as manufacturing and healthcare, wide-format SureColor printers for small-large format selfadhesive labels and decals and the SurePress shortmedium run digital label presses for commercial printing. Each printer and press is fully developed by Epson and every component – hardware, printhead, ink and software – is manufactured by Epson and optimised to deliver the best possible performance. The high-productivity SurePress L-6034V is Epson’s first single-pass digital label press and Epson’s first press to use UV ink. Commercially launched 18 months ago, this press is currently being commissioned by industrial label print firms around the world, including the first in Europe which was installed at Label G2 in France in May. There is significant market interest in the SurePress L-6034V and details about further installations will be announced over the next few months. The SurePress L-4033AW is a wide-gamut seven colour inkjet digital label press, including white, green and orange ink that makes high-quality, shortmedium run label printing easier and more efficient, even on clear and metallic substrates. Delivering exceptional print quality and accurate colour reproduction this press is the only aqueous inkjet label press on the market which has made it a popular choice with many companies. Today there are over 150 of these presses in production worldwide and many companies are so happy with them that over 20% have invested in their second machine. Duncan Ferguson, Director ProGraphics, Epson Europe, says: “We are committed to this industry for the long term. We currently invest over $1 million a day on R&D and have just invested over $200 million to build two new PrecisionCore production facilities which is driving continued innovation. We recognise that the label industry is extremely diverse which is why we offer such a wide range of production solutions with a choice of inks – all of which deliver high quality, superb reliability and the best all round return on investment. Epson excels at high-quality inkjet imaging and our strategy is to meet the industry’s needs now and anticipate and adapt to these needs as they change.” www.epson.co.uk

New POLAR Mohr laser cutter WITH Digicut, POLAR is offering a device for the creative processing of single sheets. The laser cutter can cut, perforate, crease and engrave in one pass - without the need for a tool change. The innovative laser technology opens up numerous possibilities for digital and commercial printers. The laser enables the most intricate contours to be not only cut, but also perforated, creased and engraved — all in a single pass and on a wide variety of materials. PRODUCTION OPTIONS — There are practically no limits when it comes to the contour. Because a laser is used, there are also no additional tool costs. As a result, batches from one single copy to several hundred can be produced very economically. A small selection of products that can be manufactured with the Digicut includes: cards, invitations, envelopes, folders, writing paper, samples, business cards, place cards, lanterns, jigsaws, bookmarks. DIGICUT DESCRIPTION — The tool in the Digicut is a laser beam. Laser technology is already used in many areas of day-to-day life: from a simple light pointer (e.g. a laser pointer in presentations) or

distance measuring devices through to CD players. Laser cutting is a thermal separating method for flat-lying material. The material is processed without any contact, and therefore does not need to be fixed. The material itself is vaporised on the surface in fractions of a second as a result of the laser energy. Morgana BM350 / BM500 Launch Event Success

MORGANA Systems has declared its three day PRO TOUR event a great success, with over 40 companies visiting and showing substantial interest in both the new BM350/500 bookletmakers and Valiani’s latest cutting machine. The new offline bookletmaker BM500 – a machine capable of producing booklets of up to 200 pages — was on show in the UK for the first time. The showroom event included a wide range of Morgana’s post-press products, along with a new addition to the range of cutting products on offer from the company – the Valiani Mat Pro Ultra V. Joining Morgana at the event were Konica Minolta, who exhibited a bizhub C1065 print engine.

Commenting on the success of the show, Paul Williams, Morgana’s UK Sales Manager, said: “It was a delight to welcome so many visitors to the event. Our sales team were kept busy throughout the three days. The new bookletmaker was very well received, with significant interest shown by a number of potential customers.” The other star of the show was the Valiani cutting machine — a combination of hardware and software designed to produce high-quality cut-outs for one-off or short-run production of uniquely shaped items. The large vacuum-table workspace provided by the machine makes it ideal for the production of packaging mock-ups,

point-of-purchase displays, and many other forms of shaped marketing materials. The product can handle materials up to 5mm thick, and is capable of scoring as well as cutting. Other popular elements of the Morgana range on display were the four PUR binders in the Morgana DigiBook collection, the Card Xtra and Card Xtra Plus small format finishing devices, and the ever popular AutoCreaser and AutoFold machines. “It was great to have so much of the range on show for visitors to see in action, and even test with their own work if necessary, we’ve really had a very successful week,” confirmed Paul Williams. www.morgana.co.uk

Vivid show new pneumatic laminator VIVID Laminating Technologies unveiled a new wide format laminator at FESPA. The Easymount Air is a revolutionary product in the wide format lamination arena and made its world debut at the recent event. The patented system has been developed in-house by Vivid’s design team. Vivid’s technical manager Gavin Ward said: “The new Easymount Air range is a breakthrough product in wide format lamination. The air pressure that controls the roller allows you to mount and laminate with incredible accuracy. Our patented technology allows the roller to ‘float’ and lock in place. No other pneumatic wide format lamination system can achieve this. “Other pneumatic wide format laminators lack any precision. Their rollers are either up or down, there’s nothing that controls how much actual pressure is being applied. Exact pressure is essential, as foam boards and Correx can be crushed and glass sheets cracked.” Vivid’s award-winning Easymount Wide Format Laminators are exported to over 50 countries throughout the world and are used by quick print

professionals, sign makers, vehicle graphics firms and wide format printers. www.vivid-online.com

Route One offer the full package

Route One Print ventures into new territory with the latest addition to their product range and Brand Manager, Jack Wilmott, believes it’s a game changer for the small to medium print reseller.

L

AST MONTH ROUTE One Print announced the arrival of its new packaging range, the latest in a long line of new products launched over the past 18 months by the online trade printer, and one that the company hopes can provide a boost to smaller print resellers looking to maximise the value of their print offering. Of the new range, which consists of five different models available in a range of different sizes to suit all needs, Jack Wilmott said “About a year ago we noticed a growing demand in the market for more cost-effective packaging solutions as well as a number of overseas printers beginning to offer such ranges.” As for the market forces at work behind this Jack added “More and more people are starting their own businesses each year with online sites such as eBay and Etsy as well as services like Wordpress and Magento lowering the entry barriers and making it even easier for people to go it alone. These businesses don’t always have the budgets to go all out with bespoke packaging so there is an emerging gap for standardised packaging that allows these smaller businesses to achieve that Blue Chip look and feel with their brand.” While the market for such a product is clearly there, it is the opportunity that the range presents for Route One Print’s customer base of small to medium print resellers from both print and design backgrounds that excites Jack most. “Packaging is a very tactile product that buyers are likely to

want to see in the flesh and properly examine, meaning there is likely to be resistance with buying online” he explained. “This gives freelance design professionals and copy shops a distinct advantage over the online sellers due to the face-to-face nature of their businesses. We’re confident that products like these can be something of a cash cow for these types of sellers while also providing a catalyst for long-term relationships with customers.” As for how much value packaging can add to Route One Print’s customers, Kate Mackenzie, Head of Client Services, believes a lot, adding “A few months ago the big debate was adding value through finishing, with suggestions the print sellers should be trying to increase value through pushing things like spot UV or laser cutting on to their clients, but we came to learn that not everybody wants all-singing, all-dancing flyers. Packaging doesn’t have to be dressed up or pushed on to clients, the demand is already there and if a local printer can establish a reputation and carve out their own niche within their community with products like this we can see them having a lot of success. Especially with the market for standardised packaging ranges being an emerging one, there’s also the first-mover advantage to be had.” Despite the optimism spread through Route One Print HQ, Jack Wilmott is quick to point out that this isn’t an ‘If you build it, they will come’ line of thinking and that’s why the company’s in-house creative team has been working hard behind the scenes on some packaging related reseller tools to complement their existing range. “We’ve always said that we want to do more for our customers than charge a good price, deliver a good product and do it on time. So we’ve developed a range of catalogues and white label sample packs to help our customers showcase the potential of print to their customers. For this range, we’ll be launching something akin to a display that we hope customers will proudly exhibit in their shop or office.” For more information please visit www.route1print.co.uk or call 0114 294 5026

Sign & Digital UK 2016 new show date and larger halls SIGN & Digital UK has confirmed that due to exceptional demand for stand space, the 2016 show will now take place on 19-21 April, a week earlier than originally announced. It will also return to Halls 17 & 18, the venue for the 2015 exhibition, which will allow the show to accommodate the expected growth. Rudi Blackett, Portfolio Director for Sign & Digital UK said, “By the end of the 2015 show, we had already sold over one third of the available floor space for 2016, and this along with demand following the show closing, meant that we needed to move halls in order to accommodate the growing demand. After negotiations with the NEC, Birmingham we are pleased to announce that Sign & Digital UK will now be held in halls 17 & 18 on 19-21 April 2016. We are looking forward to working with current and new exhibitors over the coming months to ensure that the next edition of the show is the best yet for all those working in the sign making, display solutions and digital printing industries.” The 2015 show on 24-26 March attracted 6,807 unique visitors, an 11.3%

After 2016 drupa will switch to three year cycle DRUPA will switch to a three-year cycle after 2016, when it runs from 31 May to 10 June. This decision was taken by the drupa committee meeting in Düsseldorf. “The entire print process chain has changed radically because of the Internet and digital technologies. New applications and solutions are developing and opening up new fields of business. At the same time, there is more focus on innovative technologies, such as 3D printing, printed electronics and functional printing,” explains Claus Bolza-Schünemann, Chairman of the drupa Advisory Board and President Koenig & Bauer Group. “It’s more important than ever before that our customers have an overview of the latest technology and are also inspired to use new business models and solutions. drupa is the only specialist trade fair in the world to offer this– and will do so every three years in the future.” One positive side-effect of this change is that drupa will no longer run in 2020, the same year as interpack, the world’s most important trade fair for the packaging industry and the closely related process industry. “The drupa exhibitors who specialise in packaging printing would have found 2020 an incredibly stressful year so the change will clearly benefit customers,” emphasises Werner Matthias Dornscheidt, President & CEO Messe Düsseldorf. The precise dates haven’t yet been finalised, but it’s clear that drupa will take place in the traditional drupa month of May in 2019, 2022 and 2025 in Düsseldorf. www.drupa.com

Key industry trade bodies commit to The Print Show ORGANISERS of The Print Show have confirmed that the inaugural edition of the event this year has secured the backing of all major print-focused trade bodies and charitable organisations in the industry. Taking place at Birmingham’s NEC from October 13th to 15th, the show has attracted plenty of interest from companies across the industry, with many major print brands having already committed to appearing at the show. This high level of support has now been given a further boost by the news that all major trade bodies from within the print industry have declared their support for the event, with several key organisations due to be in attendance at the show. One such body is Two Sides and Print Power, which is known throughout the industry not only for its backing of print as a sustainable media, but also for highlighting the many benefits such materials can offer to those brands that opt to use it. Jonathan Tame, UK country manager for Two Sides and Print Power, believes the way that The Print Show has been put together will allow the organisation to effectively communicate its message to visitor and exhibitors alike. “Print Power promotes the use and effectiveness of print media in a multi-channel market, to media and marketing professionals across Europe,” Tame said. He added: “We maintain that print media is one of the most powerful and sustainable forms of communication. “We believe events showcasing the value, dynamism and print innovation for marketing professionals and brands are really important. “We are confident that The Print Show will deliver a new and innovative, content-rich event, which really excites the print industry and we fully endorse the idea of running their new event alongside other relevant events from the marketing and business sectors, in our creative capital — London.”

ADDRESSING THE NEEDS OF THE INDUSTRY In addition to confirming the backing of all major trade bodies, which include the BPIF, BAPC, IPIA, St Brides Foundation, PICON, ProSkills, and The

Printing Charity, organisers have also confirmed the signing of a number of new key print industry players. One such company is OKI, which specialises in the manufacture and supply of digital print equipment, inks, and media. Andrew Hall, marketing manager at OKI, was heavily involved with the process surrounding its decision to sign up to the event and states that the show will not only help the firm get its message out to the UK market, but also help customers find the best solution for their various printing needs. “We believe that the Print Show will attract the right level of visitor and more importantly UKbased,” Hall says. He continues: “As we have a fantastic product for this market, the show will enable OKI to showcase our solutions for the print sector under one roof and attract large numbers of potential customers over the three days. This alone is one of the reasons we have chosen to exhibit. “The Print Show will address the needs of the print industry in that customers can see the latest in technology from key manufacturers and suppliers. Digital print is growing in this sector and the entry level products have shown huge innovations in the last few years.”

RA Smart showing at Newtech trade events MAGNUS Mighall, Partner at RA Smart (CAD & Machinery) has announced that RA Smart will be showing the Epson SC-F2000 Direct to Garment solution at three Newtech trade events throughout the country, at Bristol on 14-15 July, Wetherby 6-7 October and finally London 24-25 November 2015. ‘We are really looking forward to offering our customers the chance to see the virtues of the Epson SCF2000 DTG solution at a venue close to them and in a relaxed environment’ comments Mighall. Meanwhile, visitors at the show will also get the chance to take in the work from some of the best young print talent in the UK. PrintIT!, the popular education initiative run by Proskills, will be hosting a competition at the show that will give talented youngsters not only the chance to win a special prize, but also show off their work first-hand to exhibitors and visitors alike. Youngsters will be tasked with designing an A3 poster that showcases how print affects the world we live in. Entries that are considered creative and bold will be shortlisted for a chance to win a brand new laptop, while all finalists will be invited to attend The Print Show. The judging panel will be made up of a number of industry experts from various trade bodies, companies exhibiting at the show, as well as members of The Print Show team. Ledger, chief executive officer of Proskills UK, says: “We are delighted to be running this mini competition alongside our PrintIT! 2015/16 programme and can’t wait to see the images produced by our registered students. “We are very excited that The Print Show will be able to invite the finalists to their show, where we will be announcing the winner. Look out for some exceptional entries and I’m sure the judges will have a hard time picking a winner.” Reflecting on the latest developments from The Print Show, event director Chris Davies praises the commitment from trade bodies and exhibitors, stating that the show will provide, ‘an effective platform to promote products, services and the benefits of print’. He continues: “If you look at the number of trade bodies that have signed up, this just goes to show exactly how much the UK needs an event like this. “Not only do we have their blessing to launch the show, but they’ll be in attendance at the NEC to help spread our message about building for a successful future in the UK print market. “I’m also looking forward to seeing work from some of print’s brightest young minds with the PrintIT! and Proskills competition. This will also fit in with our ‘Blueprint for the Future’ tagline and how The Print Show can help UK printers ensure success moving forward.” www.theprintshow.co.uk

Heidelberg: Dedicated to Digital

QPP readers attended Heidelberg’s national showroom in Brentford for the launch of a dedicated Digital Front End. Reporting back to these pages for the first time is our very own Nick Hancock aided and abetted by our regular contributor Di Thompson.

D

I’S DIARY PROVED the day was both busy and informative; 10.00AM doors officially opened although some keen early birds had beaten us to it. In the following hour numbers rose, a mix of larger commercial groups (Headleys and Pensord among them) but also many from smaller commercial enterprises and the quickprinter fraternity. Performance and Value was the focus for this open house — the P and V in the Linoprint CP and Linoprint CV digital presses. The C stands for Commercial. But it was the launch of Heidelberg’s dedicated Digital Front End, the well named Smart Automation and the ability to link in web to print, MIS and production in a seamless whole that was going to be the main event. Inside the showroom Heidelberg’s partners were out in force, tucked in between litho machines and finishing kit. They were keen to speak to visitors. There was Polar (cutting equipment), ATS (binding machines), Morgana (inline finishing kit), Tharstern (MIS), ROI360 (web to print) and Magic Touch (personalisation products). ROI360’s managing director John Murphy had an interesting take on web to print in the sector: “The biggest challenge is not persuading printers of the need to invest in the technology but to help them harness web to print in an effective way, marketing it and helping to make it bespoke to their customers. We are expanding our team to do just that.” 11.30AM Heidelberg unveiled its Digital Front End. Fanfare please! John Murphy (yes really there were two John Murphy’s at this event, this one is the Heidelberg workflow and front end specialist) introduced the technology. “Heidelberg is investing significant sums in the development of new digital devices and workflows,” he says and this is one of the first significant steps. The DFE accurately controls print quality, colour and output consistency. The renderer gives colour control that makes the match with litho much closer and the latest Linoprint presses offer a 10% greater colour gamut, 4,800dpi resolution and use a finer four micron toner. This combines to offer a step change in colour quality and control. Variable data is included in the Digital Front End as standard and it is a true workflow product which is scalable so can build with a business. 12.30PM Networking time. The bar was open and “substantial canapés”, from mini burgers to goat’s cheese tarts, were distributed. Well, you were invited. 2PM A personalised notebook is thrust into my hands. This was digitally produced with a bespoke labelling system from Magic Touch. WOW this is impressive. 3PM Second demonstration. Each one consisted of two parts, the introduction of the DFE and workflow solutions, and the second inside the impressive glass panelled digital suite which focused on Heidelberg’s latest generation presses. 3.30PM Quick review and over to Nick… who was most impressed with the demonstrations. John Murphy and Neil Hathaway, took us through a live presentation showing its workflow with their partners ROI 360 (Web to Print Solution) and Tharstern MIS along with Heidelberg’s Product workflow. The first job they produced was a variable data job that goes directly into their own workflow. Heidelberg have been working with ROI for about three years and Tharstern for the past 10 years. Smart Automation is a software module that automates where appropriate. It identifies within your workflow all the touch points. It looks into the pre-setting data that has come from the MIS or the Print Solution and then it excludes the components that are not required. So they end up with only the points that are appropriate to that customer job or the output they are putting it on.

COLOUR AND CALIBRATION You no longer need to go to a third party to control the device as it can be dealt with by a UK colour support team and the colour management modules are fully integrated into the equipment itself. Variable data comes standard with the workflow. It is a true workflow product and the user interface is extremely easy to use. Chris Mathews took us downstairs for a live demonstration of the Digital Linoprint CP (Commercial Production) and CV (Commercial Value) Digital Presses. The CP version is available in 130pages per minute (that’s 3,900 SRA3 sheets per hour) or 110ppm (3,300sph) versions while the CV is either 80ppm (2,400sph) or 90ppm (2,700sph). Both handle SRA3 sheets of 330 x 488m with an image area of up to 320 x 480mm. However, a key feature and a standard in the UK is the 700mm banner feeder option. This allows printers to produce six page A4 or landscape A4 products. The other head turner is the fifth colour which allows printers to lay down a white or opaque finish (these are interchangeable, taking about 15 minutes to switch). Heidelberg re-entered the Digital Market Place just over four years ago (2011) where they partnered with RICOH when they both launched the C901 (90ppm) which was followed by the Linoprint C751. (70ppm) Since then they have been working on the Linoprint CP and CV Digital Presses. As standard the CV Press will take all stocks from 52-360gsm paper, boards and synthetic material. It will also duplex all these weights. Its life is 7.2 million sides over five years. It also has a 5th colour unit that is unique as it allows you to add white or clear toner. Heidelberg supply a whole set of operator replacement units which are included in the click price on both the CV and CP. There is no minimum volume. The unique toner on the CV and CP agitates from the belt down onto the paper by alternating the current. Toner is no longer pulverised carbon using silicon oil as it does not dry straight away. As a QPP preview Paul Smout (Smouty) from Morgana pointed me in the direction of the soon to be launched Valiani Mat Pro Ultra which is a flat bed plotter, cutter machine. Take a look at it on You Tube. Please contact either Wendy or Ray Hillhouse for more information.

Never stop learning Martin Christie says sometimes it’s easy to think the print industry is unique in the problems that it faces on a daily basis, but a wider perspective underlines that similar issues are faced all over the digital economy.

T

HE NEWS THAT the banks, of all people needing no further self-made disasters, are facing problems because of ageing IT infrastructure is disturbing, but not surprising. Certainly not surprising to regular readers who know that the importance of keeping up to date with current technology is a continuing theme and that is in both software and hardware. The banks, and their dusty computer systems, are apparently suffering from the growth of internet banking and an inability to cope with the volume of traffic and transactions on line. That’s a rather ironic own goal as it’s something they have been actively encouraging by cutting costs and staff at counter services. I sometimes wonder whether some of our more impatient customers, who start to tick if printing takes more than a minute, ever go into banks and stand behind interminable queues. The answer is of course probably not. They obviously do everything on their phone which is why coming into contact with people, and a service that requires intelligent physical action, comes as a shock to the system. What makes printing different from many other disciplines is that it involves actual production. There’s nothing stacked on the shelf in advance, no stock you can build up in quiet periods, and no way to anticipate demand to any certain degree. It’s unpredictable, but it’s still expected to be instant. And that immediacy is so often to be judged by the customer, not by the producer which really does stack up the odds against turning out a good job, in the right time, at the right price. The digital consumer has become so used to instant gratification at the click of a mouse or the touch of a screen that the concept of someone actually having to do something that involves effort is almost alien. Certainly there is little widespread understanding of the practical considerations in the production of print, which is where the tension between customer and counter begins. In older analogue days you could actually see the time taken to put an original on the copier and produce a copy, and you couldn’t make it any quicker. Nowadays there is no way you can tell how long a process will take unless you are sure the customer is providing you with print ready files, and even then there may be some further complication somewhere along the production line. It seems an inevitable connection that as the pace of life gets faster, it also gets more complicated, at least for those who try to understand it. So in the interests of throwing at least a little bit of light into this dark grey area, this month’s column is devoted to the very basics to

cover the vital things that people now just accept, without really knowing what they are dealing with. Apologies in advance if it seems a little simplistic, but it is aimed for everyone working in a present day print environment, particularly more recent employees, who may not have had the learning curve of more experienced staff, but still have to deal with the problems. I am also talking about digital image files, as although some artwork may be created in design programmes like Adobe Illustrator, they are now most likely to be presented for print as PDFs, JPGs or TIFFs, rather than as vector files, which many people may now be unfamiliar with as a result. Vector files, like EPS or Illustrator files, are not resolution dependent. Their mathematical make up means they can be enlarged to any size for output. Only when they are rasterised, which means turning the binary information contained into actual pixels, do they become a solid image. If you import an EPS into Photoshop, the software will give you the option of what resolution you wish to set it to determine the size of output, as is the case with some PDF files which have been saved but not flattened, and may contain layers and other buried treasure. Rasterising a file will supress any confusing or conflicting information before sending to the printer, which is why it is important to be familiar with the use of Adobe Photoshop, rather than simply using Adobe Acrobat. If you are using basic Acrobat, you are basically driving blind with unknown files and letting the printer deal with any problems at the other end. Similarly importing a file into an InDesign template may disguise underlying issues. It may seem the

quickest thing to do when you are under pressure, but if it snarls up the print queue, it won’t help workflow. It is important to be able to investigate files in order to ensure they are print ready, rather than rely on an act of faith, otherwise you can waste both time and paper, and generating unnecessary frustration. Photoshop is the most important and most powerful of all Adobe products, and as a result the most useful. It has been around a long time but is constantly being upgraded and updated, most notably now with the online subscription option, the development is ongoing. That is significant because the very nature of the digital format means that there is constant movement as the technology advances, and things that were state of the art over a decade ago are now consigned to the dustbin. The digital economy by its very nature, and quite deliberately, has empowered so many more people to take pictures, exchange information, and create documents without any need to consider the implications of producing print. Its rapid progress also means that someone who had a little knowledge a few years ago, may yet be hopelessly out of touch with current practice. Early versions of Photoshop were inevitably quite basic compared to the current offering, as much like comparing an old banger to a modern car. So just because a customer thinks they know Photoshop doesn’t mean they are not driving an antique. Even those people with up to date versions probably only know their way round a tiny portion of it. Essentially Photoshop, by its very title, is designed for picture files. Picture files include anything taken

with a digital camera, scanned from original, or downloaded from images on the internet. These files contain hundreds, thousands or millions of pixels which are the basic building blocks of the overall image. Think of them like so many coloured bricks, a bit like a gigantic Lego set that erects itself when you open it on the screen, but it has a limited number of pieces, determined by the original file. That’s why we call a pixel based file resolution dependant. Whatever it started with is what you’ve got to play with. You can make it bigger, but you are only juggling the same number of pixels, so quality will decline as a result. This may be an acceptable loss, depending upon the image, but it’s important to be aware of the possibilities to advise the customer and avoid disappointment. That’s why dropping a file into Photoshop and checking size and resolution is an essential action if there is any doubt, and also here the relationship between size and resolution can be resolved. The rule of thumb is that a print file needs to be a minimum of 300ppi for output at the chosen, but there is a bit of flexibility on this depending on the image, and how far out the file is from this ideal. All digital cameras, including phones, and most internet images are 72ppi (but usually four times the phyisical size of print resolution), which is also the resolution of computer screens, but a check of actual physical size will reveal the total number of pixels contained in the entire image. If it’s an image on the internet on a search engine, brushing the mouse over it usually reveals the pixel count. Numbers in the thousands are ideal for even small size printing, anything in the hundreds may be pushing it, and low hundreds are often little more than postage stamp thumbnails. They may look good on the phone screen but they are not going to make a wall poster! Good quality digital cameras are capable of capturing very large files, at least 6,000 x 4,000 pixels which is almost a full size A2 at print resolution, but the danger is that all these pixels will be lost when the file is edited or incorrectly saved, which is why a good knowledge of functions in Photoshop is important. If pixels are discarded, they cannot be put back again, and some software will automatically reduce size so a decent original can easily become trash in the hands of the unwary. In Photoshop the dialogue box that tells you the size and resolution also enables you to resize the file, keeping it in proportion and/or resampling it. It’s important to keep the image in proportion to avoid distortion by stretching or squashing so the link needs to be on. It’s also important not to resample unless you actually want to remove pixels, so that box needs to be unchecked. This simple action is one of the commonest causes of problems, and usually what goes wrong when customers edit and save original files thinking they know what they are doing. But it is also an easy mistake to make if you are resizing an image in the bureau unless you take a little moment to check all the boxes. The other important thing about picture files, whether from camera, scan or web, is that they are all in RGB colour, or even sRGB, as their native state, which are also the colours displayed on the screen, and what we see with our eyes. This state has about four times the colour variables available in basic CMYK printing, and is one of the most regular causes of issues in matching print output. It’s never

vivid-online.com

going to be an exact match of what is on the screen or what you see with your eyes, not only because it’s printed on paper and not backlit, but because four colour inks or toner can only be mixed to so many limited combinations and not compete with the colours of the rainbow. It’s just a matter of how close you can get, or what is acceptable. Even if you convert the file to CMYK in Photoshop before sending to print, you are still only viewing a simulation, albeit a much closer one. If you send to print in RGB you are letting the printer make the conversion. Modern inkjet printers, with up to ten or eleven inks are able to print much closer to the RGB colour range, and are vastly more accurate and consistent in colour on a daily basis than toner digital presses that can vary considerably even if they are regularly maintained and calibrated. It has to be said that they are so much better than colour printing used to be, it’s just that people’s expectations have been raised so much by what they can see on the screen. The easiest way to understand the dark matter that is the difference between RGB and CMYK is to display the two side by side and see the effect of removing the colour channels as shown. In RGB you can remove any of the three individual colours without affecting the others. In CMYK, however, any deletion affects the immediate colours of the other. That’s why colour correction for CMYK printing is so much more complicated before you even get into Pantone colours and coated paper stock, and best left to the professionals. At least a visual reference will give you better idea of exactly why it is difficult and may make it easier to explain to customers why you can’t instantly reproduce exactly what they think they want. At least by using Photoshop correctly you have a chance of getting closer to the customer’s expectations, and producing print faster as the end result.

Fresh or recycled fibre? The answer is both! HAVE you ever wondered if it is more sustainable to use paper products made from fresh or recycled fiber? It is a fair question to ask, but a question that cannot be answered with either-or. With their latest Facts & Trends report, the WBCSD Forest Solutions Group demonstrates the complementarity of fresh and recycled fibre for the sustainable supply of renewable raw material and products, outlining the environmental tradeoffs between choosing between fresh and recycled fibre and emphasising how to maximise the value of each harvested tree.

WHY IS FRESH AND RECYCLED FIBRE COMPLEMENTARY? Fresh and recycled fibre are part of single-integrated wood fibre system – without fresh fibre, we would have no recycled fibre available. Furthermore, fibres cannot be recycled forever: there are limits to the amounts of used paper and paperboard that can be recovered, fibre is lost during the recovery and recycling process, and the fibre eventually degrades with multiple uses. With over 50% of papermaking fibre coming from recycled fibre, quite simply market demands for paper and paperboard products cannot be met without both fresh and recycled fibre. In developed countries, for instance, the recovery of paper and paperboard is approaching the maximum that can be practically achieved.

ENSURING SUSTAINABILITY

BLUE & TAKO

PRO-GRAPHIC

With the need for fresh fibre set to continue, the report highlights the significant benefit of certification of this material, providing information about the forests from which the fibre originated. By purchasing raw materials certified to a credible certification system, such as PEFC’s, companies can be assured that the environmental and social attributes of the fibre used in the end product have been independently assessed and verified.

FINAL THOUGHTS

We offer the most extensive range of products for digital printing, available from stock. For more information or samples contact your local sales office or email marketing@paper.co.uk

www.paper.co.uk

Demand for wood and fibre is expected to increase for the foreseeable future. Using natural resources responsibly and transparently is vital to help meet this demand. Recovery and recycling is an integral part of using resources efficiently, reducing consumption footprints, providing sustainable products and thereby contributing to creating more sustainable lifestyles. Forests provide us with a renewable and highly recyclable raw material – wood. Fibre obtained from wood is used to make paper and other products. Given resource constraints, the recovery and recycling of wood and paper products are essential to make a resource-efficient, quasi-circular economy a reality. Developed by the WBCSD Forest Solutions Group with extensive technical support from the National Council for Air and Stream Improvement (NCASI), it supports the ongoing dialogue with major users of forest-based products, particularly consumer-goods manufacturers, WBCSD members and other forest-focused stakeholders in government, civil society and business. It complements the WRI & WBCSD Sustainable Procurement Guide for Woodand Paper-Based Products. www.pefc.co.uk • www.wbcsd.org

International Paper Launches ‘Little Green Kit’

INTERNATIONAL Paper has announced the launch of its ‘Little Green Kit Online’. Part of a straight talking initiative developed by International Paper to make it easier for people to understand some of the key facts about how sustainable the pulp and paper industry really is, the ‘Little Green Kit’ Online tells the International Paper EMEA Sustainability Story so far. At www.little-green-kit.com it brings together for the first time electronic versions of the company’s print publications ‘The Little Green Book’, ‘The Little Book of Commonsense’ and ‘A Matter of Credentials’. ‘The Little Green Book’ dispels the common myths and misconceptions about the pulp and paper industry in relation to sustainability while ‘The Little Book of Commonsense’ reminds every one why paper is as good, as relevant and as right today as ever. ‘A Matter of Credentials’ finally brings together our combined sustainability track record and future goals at International Paper. “Sustainability has been at the core of everything International Paper represents for over a century and the kit has helped to tell that story,” said David Higgins, Director Government Relations, Communications & Sustainability at International Paper EMEA. “Over the years it has proven so popular that now we have produced an electronic version.” www.internationalpaper.com

ANTALIS UK has launched an innovative, easy to understand environmental classification system to help customers quickly identify eco-responsible papers. The Antalis Green Star System (GSS) is based on the universally-recognised star ranking reference to indicate levels of eco-responsibility and incorporates fundamental information on the origin of the fibre and the manufacturing process. This new simple star-based system attributes a number of green stars, from zero to five, to each paper product according to its environmental credentials, allowing customers to make informed, responsible choices. Commenting on the launch of Antalis’ new Green Star System, Matthew Botfield, Environment Manager at Antalis UK says, “Paper sourcing and usage is an integral part of a comprehensive Corporate and Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy. But choosing the right paper and navigating your way around all the different environmental credentials can be a minefield. However, even those unfamiliar with the growing number of ecological certifications, can easily understand our new simple green star-based system and identify the most environmentally-friendly products to suit their specific requirements.” While the GSS is designed to be accessible to everyone and simplify the intelligent choice of products with a lower environmental impact, its definition is based on exhaustive information and stringent requirements regarding the origin of the wood fibres and the paper manufacturing process. • Origin of the fibre: For a product to be eco-responsible the wood fibres must either be FSC/PEFC certified or at least 50% recycled from postconsumer waste with the remaining in line with FSC or PEFC standards. • Manufacturing process: For a product to be defined as eco-responsible, the mills that produce the paper must carry either ISO 14001 certification (based on a framework for the development of an environmental management system – EMS - and the supporting audit programme) or the EU Ecolabel (lifecycle based approach). (See the full GSS graph at the end of the release). www.antalis.co.uk

Print on bugs

Road test bander

GET to know the stickable promotional friend that never gets thrown away, available from our friends at Billbo. So many choices for your customers to bug, well their customers! Print on bugs are personalised in full colour on their feet or on the ribbon. Easy ordering options: Pick your Bug colour then your feet colour and send with your artwork and order, this is really catching! Check out the website for end user matching colour options. www.billbo.co.uk

IN the June issue we just had time for a sneak preview into the world of banding. Now released from its embargo we have started an exclusive QPP road test on the soon to be launched Umex Autoband. Initially this new desktop strapper was installed in the QPP beta test centre, which annoyed our own shop team as having received the simple demonstration they had a long list of real jobs requiring strapping. We therefore had to move the Umex Autoband to its new point of need, next to our print shop guillotine. Apparently we have been serving our customers printed goods loose, in bags and copier box lids, rubber bands and the like. Even when boxed compactly the products, mostly flyers and leaflets, are not secure and can get damaged en route. We had noticed a difficulty in stacking ‘bunches’ of print in boxes both packing and un-packing, let alone in transit. In 31 years of print we have failed to present and pack the finished job in a professional manner. Yes we have got away it. However, having seen the massive improvement and the fact our customers are so pleased, our own shop Colourfast will be the first customer for this impressive kit. There is no going back once our production team, and now our end user customers have seen the benefits of treating print with the respect it deserves. The use of a Umex automatic bander has improved the presentation of our printed products. At under two pence per metre to securely strap a bundle of flyers, brochures or business cards, the investment is an easy decision. We can’t imagine a customer going back to how we used to handle finished print jobs. It isn’t worth charging more money for the new service, just be happy that you can guarantee customer continuity and satisfaction by being better. Last month we envisaged many a QPP print room banding together to make a case for this undeniably useful bit of kit available on rent for less than two pounds a week. Having now road tested this ourselves we can only lead by example and invest in one. The positive test drive proved:

Print on frisbys

JUST right for the beach this one! Our thanks to Celia Graham at High Profile Plastic Products for July special pricing for the QPP readership. All orders, even for quantities of just 100, 250 or 500 placed by the end of July will be at the 5000 rate, hoorah, catch that. We are ordering some large 220mm yellow Frisbys in a gloss finished plastic with a smiley face and our website on; just to throw about really because at only 42 pence each including printing in one colour, plus origination and carriage, they are a bargain. We can speculate a little free gift marketing, especially when aimed at someone likely to catch the offer and bung us an order. To see the whole high profile product range at www.high-profile.co.uk or email celia@high-profile.co.uk or speak to one of her team: 01295 267966

Print on water

AS reported last month the brother tape creator research has gone from tape to ribbon and now we spring into water. Top this up with a really special QPP readers offer of a free printer when purchasing a qualifying level of consumables. We are presently re-working the water label artwork and yes it is available to any readers wishing to make a short cut. The printer has a list price of around £1500 and the first few lucky readers will be building a new business division for just £500 investment in consumables with the printer free. This offer is on a first come first served basis, which we are sharing direct, from Brother. Contact me first for the trade introduction and special pricing invitation editor@QuickPrintPro.co.uk The selling price is returning around 75% gross profit. We have kept it simple by selling all colour combinations and widths at the same price of £1 per metre. Cost is around 25 pence and orders can have a minimum order of five metres with no maximum length. Try selling personalised water to your local pubs, clubs and restaurants. Of course all water will need to be passed by the management! This printer is great for labels and re-labelling products. Be aware that in the case of water certain information must be included so just copy wherever you buy your water from.

EASE OF USE 5/5 JJJJJ

After simply loading a roll of paper or tri-laminate film tape in under 30 seconds the machine is ready to run. In automatic mode just place the print requiring banding in position and the job is done in about two seconds or in manual mode, just push the manual pedal with hand or foot as soon as your job is in the exact position you would like. Simple operation.

IMPACT ON PRESENTATION JJJJJ

Top marks for promoting the presentation of print.

RUNNING COSTS JJJJJ

With paper tapes costing less than 2p per metre and with the system only requiring a tiny lap over, it is impossible to charge. Just win more business by having the best presentation.

MACHINE AFFORDABILITY JJJJJ

Although prices have not yet been released to us officially, its quite clear the Umex AutoBander/AutoBander Pro will be available to the digital print industry at a price point previously not thought possible as an outright purchase. With rental options starting at around two pounds per week, you can justify this out of your advertising budget, as each job will demand repeat business and referrals. Having talked to a few sister trade magazines around the globe it appears we are playing catch up on this one, as many other countries print distribution already comes in bands. Enquiries pre-launch to QPP before distributors are trained. There are three early models available at an extra special rate before final livery is signed off. Royal Mail makes international mailing easier ROYAL Mail’s new International Large Letter format for franking machines is packed with new features and makes it easier for companies to send deliveries overseas. The cost of sending correspondence internationally, whether it’s marketing materials, prospectuses or contracts, is a common constraint on businesses. Indeed, in order to keep within size and weight allowances, firms have often needed to be selective of what they’re sending, which can potentially affect customer satisfaction and new

business generation. However, Royal Mail has now removed this limitation by introducing its new International Large Letter format, which empowers firms to bring global mailing in-house. The dimension allowance has been increased to 353mm x 250mm x 25mm; much fairer dimensions for users as it is ideal for sending brochures or new customer packs. The number of tracking destinations has also been expanded so you can ensure secure delivery, and with 200+ assessable countries and

territories, you’ve got more of the world available from your post room. To download Royal Mail’s latest information about how your franking machine can remove the shackles of national and international mailing, visit… www.neopost.co.uk/RM-international-formats

A limbo champion walks into a bar... and loses his title. I broke my finger today... But on the other hand I am completely fine. Why did Dorothy get lost in Oz? She had three men giving her directions. Guidance Counselor: “ Where do you see yourself in ten years?” Student: “ In a mirror...doh.” At a traffic court, the judge asked the salesman, Tell me, why did you park your car here? The man said: “Well, there was a sign that said “fine for parking.” Marriage is a relationship in which one person is always right, and the other is a husband.

DIRECTIONS?

A tourist stopped a local in a village he was visiting and asked; “What is the quickest way to the lake? The local thought for a while. “Are you walking or driving?” he asked the tourist. “I’m driving.” “That is the quickest way!” the local said.

SELL, SALE, SAIL. An inexperienced estate agent salesman asked his boss if he could refund the deposit to an angry customer who had discovered that the lot he had bought was under water. “What kind of salesman are you?” the boss scolded. “Get out there and sell him a boat.”

PARTY ANIMALS One day a snake, a turtle and a centipede are having a party. After two cases of beer are gone, they needed more beer. So they discuss who’s going to go get the beer. The turtle says, “I will go, you both just wait here.” Two hours later, the turtle wasn’t back yet, so the centipede says, “I will go.” So they open the door and see the turtle is still walking out of the door. Because turtles walk too slow the centipede says, “You both wait for me to come back, I’ve got a lot of legs, so I can walk fast.” The snake and the turtle wait for another two hours. Finally the snake says, “What is taking the centipede so long? So they open the door and check, the centipede is still at the front of the door still trying to put on all his shoes. Finally the snake says, “let me go, I can walk fast, and I don’t have feet to put shoes on.” So the snake leaves. After three hours, the snake wasn’t back yet. Both of them went to the store to find the snake. And they saw snake standing there. The snake says, “ Don’t give me those dirty looks, it only took me five minutes to get to the store, but I am still figuring out how to bring the beer back.”

BIG DEAL A teacher asked little Johnny if he knows his “1 to 10” well. “Yes! Of course! My dad taught me... even more than 10” “Good. What comes after three?” “Four,” answers the boy. “What comes after six?” “Seven.” “Very good,” says the teacher. “Your erm... dad did a good job. Now... so what comes after... lets say ten?” “A jack!”

SALES TRIP A salesman called the airport for flight information. “How long is your flight from Heathrow to Malaga?” he asked. “Just a minute,” the pleasant agent replied. “Thank You” he said and hung up.

BEST ADVICE A printer asked the print press salesman for some free advice. “that second hand printer you sold me works normally sometimes, and mostly it just doesn’t want to know. What shall I do?” The salesman replied, “The next time it works normally, sell it.”

ONE FAT CAT A couple are dressed and ready to go out for the evening. They phone for a cab, turn on a night light, cover their pet parakeet and put the cat out in the back garden. The taxi arrives, and they open the front door to leave. Suddenly the cat they put out shoots back into the house. They don’t want the cat shut in there because she always tries to eat the bird. The wife goes out to the taxi while the husband goes back in. The cat runs upstairs, with the man in hot pursuit. The wife doesn’t want the driver to know the house will be empty. She explains to the taxi driver that her husband will be out soon. “He’s just going upstairs to say goodbye to my mother.” A few minutes later the husband gets into the cab. “Sorry I took so long,” he says, as they drive away. “Stupid hag was hiding under the bed. Had to poke her with a coat hanger to get her to come out! Then I had to wrap her in a blanket to keep her from scratching me. But it worked. I hauled her fat arse and kicked her through the cat flap. The cab driver hit a parked car.

OUR MAN IN THE FIELD A man is driving down a country road when he spots a salesman standing in the middle of a huge field of grass. He pulls the car over to the side of the road and notices that the salesman is just standing there, doing nothing, looking at nothing. The man gets out of the car, walks all the way out to the salesman and asks him, “Ah excuse me mister, but what are you doing?” The salesman replies, “I’m trying to win a Nobel Prize.” “How?” asks the man, puzzled. “Well I heard they give the Nobel Prize to people who are out standing in their field.”

SALES TRAINER After the sales training a young salesman told the tutor, ‘When I pass, I’m going to give you some money.’ ‘Well, thank you,’ the tutor replied, ‘but why?’ ‘Because my sales manager says you’re one of the poorest trainers we’ve ever had.’

VOCABULARY CONFUSION A very intelligent boy was fortunate enough to be receiving a far better education than his parents had enjoyed, and his vocabulary far outstripped theirs. One day he came home from school and said “Mummy, may I relate to you a narrative?” “What’s a narrative, Gerald?” she asked. “A narrative, Mummy, is a tale.” “Oh, I see,” said his mother nodding, and Gerald told her his story. At bedtime as he was about to go upstairs he said, “Shall I extinguish the light Mummy?” “What’s extinguish?” she asked. “Extinguish means to put out, Mummy,” said brainy Gerald “Oh, I see. Yes, certainly.” The next day the clergyman came to tea and the family dog began to make a nuisance of himself, as a dog will, by begging for goodies from the table. “Gerald,” said his mother, trying to impress “Take that dog by the narrative and extinguish him!”

PUPPET ACROSS THE POND A ventriloquist stops to entertain some people in a small town. He’s going through his usual stupid George W. jokes, when George W. himself walks up. “I’ve heard just about enough of your denigrating George W. jokes!” He says. “What makes you think you can stereotype me that way? What does a person’s knowledge of geography and world politics have to do with their worth as a human being? It’s guys like you who keep people like me from being respected at work and in my community. I’m as smart as anyone else and...” The ventriloquist begins to apologise, when George W. stops him. “You stay out of this, Mister. I’m talking to that little smart alec on your knee!”

Why was the fly…

SALESMEN JOKES A few nights ago a few friends and I were in a bar, telling all the salesmen jokes we knew; boy what a feast! Anyway, I ducked into the toilet to sprinkle the old porcelain. While I was in there, this big guy came in and said to me, ‘Hey pal, I’m a salesman and I don’t like you telling all those salesman jokes!’ So I said, ‘Well, they’re not against you, pal, just against anyone in sales.’ ‘My whole family are in sales!’ He screams, and pulls out a razor. Boy was I scared! I was sure he would have killed me if he had found a place to plug it in.

The salesman responds, “I got some dodgy toner in all the colours.” The younger man asks, “If I guess how many toners you got in the case, can I keep one?” The salesman replies, “If you can guess how many toners I’ve got in this case, I’ll give you all four of ‘em!”

THE NEED TO KNOW

A man is driving down the road and breaks down near a monastery. He goes to the monastery, knocks on the door, and says, “My car broke down. Do you think I could stay the night?” The monks graciously accept him, feed him dinner, even fix his car. As the man tries to fall asleep, he hears a very strange sound. The next SALES SCHOOL morning, he asks the monks what Two salesmen were taking an the sound was, but they say, “We important final exam. If they failed, can’t tell you. You’re not a monk.” they would be on sales probation The man is disappointed but thanks and not allowed to go on patch them anyway and goes about his the following week. The exam was merry way. says, “The sound is right behind that door.” The man reaches for the knob, but the door is locked. He says, “Real funny. May I have the key?” The monks give him the key, and he opens the door. Behind the wooden door is another door made of stone. The man requests the key to the stone door. The monks give him the key, and he opens it, only to find a door made of ruby. He demands another key from the monks, who provide it. Behind that door is another door, this one made of sapphire, And so it went until the man had gone through doors of emerald, silver, topaz, and amethyst. Finally, the monks say, “This is the last key to the last door.” The man is relieved to know that he has finally reached to the end. He unlocks the door, turns the knob, and behind that door he is amazed to find the source of that strange sound. But he can’t tell you what it is because you’re not a monk.

ADVICE OUTSIDE OF WORK At a party of professionals, a graphics designer was having difficulty socialising. Everyone wanted to describe their design wishes, and get a free tutorial on Photoshop or InDesign. The designer turned to a solicitor acquaintance, and asked, “How do you handle people who want advice outside of the office?” “Simple,” answered the solicitor, “I send them an invoice. That stops it.” The next day, the designer, still feeling a bit reserved about invoicing for his professional expertise, opened his morning post to a bill from the solicitor.

TIGHT REIN One day some salesmen from a nearby copier firm saw a boy leading a donkey. They thought they would have some fun with him. ‘Say, boy,’ called out one of the salesmen. ‘You sure are keeping a tight rein on your brother, aren’t you?’ ‘Sure am,’ said the boy. ‘If I didn’t he would probably become a copier rep.’

it said, “Twist to open.”
