OKI Sponsors County Cricket Ground Business Media Centre OKI Systems UK Ltd has announced it will give its name to the new £2 million media centre complex at Derbyshire Cricket Club’s 3aaa County Ground in Derby. The new centre, due to be completed this August, is the culmination of a major development at the club which began with 3aaa pavilion and the Elite Performance Centre last year. As part of the major sponsorship deal, the new four-storey media centre will be known as the OKI Business and Media Centre. Derbyshire Cricket Club has invested in the new centre as part of its plan to attract high profile players, bigger crowds and more media coverage. It has also helped it become one of the venues for the Women’s Cricket World Cup in 2017. For OKI it will be an opportunity to showcase the latest print and document management technology; as two floors of the centre are dedicated to office space, it will be able to establish a customer demonstration suite within the complex. “Derby has been described by George Osborne, Chancellor of the Exchequer as ‘a great example of what the British economy should be in the future’. It has been named as one of the top 25 European cities in which to invest and recognised by the Financial Times FDI awards as an outstanding location for business friendliness,” says Andrew Hall, OKI Systems UK marketing manager. “We’ve been impressed by the commitment of organisations such as Marketing Derbyshire to encouraging business growth in the area —

building on the presence of automotive giants such as Rolls Royce and Toyota — combined with the cricket club’s commercial approach. We are, therefore, delighted to give our name to such

an exciting new enterprise. We look forward to welcoming our clients to the centre and enjoying many years of good cricket in the future.” www.okieurope.com

How to stop good paper from turning bad NEW research by Canon Europe highlights one of the surprising aspects of the modern workplace, the enduring appeal of paper. In an international survey of 1,000 business people, 57% of office workers said they print more documents today than they did three years ago and more than three quarters (78%) of decision-makers described document printing as essential or very important to their business. That people still choose to print in an era of digitisation, mobility and anytime, anywhere access to documents is testament to the enduring appeal of paper. It also raises some important questions about the function of paper in the modern workplace. Print management consultants NewField IT says it is important to make a distinction between good and bad paper. The first category features activities where paper has an advantage over digital, such as for reading, annotating and sharing. The second includes ones where paper creates waste, additional expense, delays and inaccuracies, such as using it for information storage,

billing/invoicing or signatures. It is also important to recognise that ‘good’ paper can turn ‘bad’ if it is not managed properly, if printouts are allowed to accumulate on people’s desks or if paper-based information can’t easily be accessed and shared with others. To prevent this from happening, NewField IT advises organisations to manage paper use in offices through the implementation of clear desk policies and scanning and paper recycling once the paper is no longer needed. Such measures are good for controlling paper produced by third parties (i.e. employees, customers, suppliers). But what about documents produced for third parties, such as letters, bills, statements, proposals, brochures etc.? Even businesses committed to paper-less working may still need

to produce printed documents, because certain customers prefer to receive paper documents or because printed material is effective at generating business (e.g. direct mail). How can you prevent this ‘good’ paper from clogging up and delaying your business processes and compromising a digitisation strategy? The short answer is to speed up the time between printing and despatch, with a high level of automation so that offices don’t become clogged up with paper and employees don’t have to waste time collating mailings and filling envelopes. Output management software, high speed printers, intelligent franking machines will all help in this regard. So, too, will folder inserters which automate envelope filling. There are many good reasons to invest in a folder inserter, including reduced mailing costs, improved accuracy, a more professional appearance, personalised communications and more impactful, effective mailings. For businesses attempting to eliminate the inefficiencies of working with paper, a folder inserter also frees staff from having to waste

time collating documents and filling envelopes by hand. The slowest folder inserter can process mailings more than 13 times faster than by hand, with the quickest operating at speeds of up to 12,000 envelopes per hour. Some models can be linked with franking machines in a fully automated process, from insertion to postbag. It is safe to assume that folder inserters are rarely considered as part of a digitisation strategy. However, as long as paper continues to be produced by businesses to communicate with customers, suppliers and prospects they have an important role to play in negating the complications and inefficiencies associated with paper handling/ processing. By automating and streamlining the production of mailings within organisations, folder inserters minimise the amount of time printed communications are kept on site and can help prevent ‘good’ paper from turning ‘bad’. Kingsbury Press makes its debut in digital KINGSBURY Press is ‘putting a toe in the water’ with digital printing, installing a Linoprint CV from Heidelberg at its Doncaster plant. “We have been reluctant to move in this direction because we have never felt comfortable with the quality and reliability from digital presses. Our client base is equally as quality critical, but we feel with the Linoprint CV there is now an affordable digital solution that our customers will accept that we can build from,” says Ed Layton, managing director. “White and clear ink capability was also very much a factor which strengthened the decision for the CV along with the fact that the machine can link directly into the Prinect workflow software and Digital Front End RIP, giving greater control of the output options. In some cases we are hoping that we will be able to use the press to run proofs that Kingsbury uses the slogan “the art of print” and are currently run through the slower and more its web site talks of the “pursuit of perfection” and expensive Epson printers.” the quest “to be the best at what we do”. on quality, coupled with innovation and project management skills, are its unique selling points. www.heidellberg.com

Colourfast targets growth with Duplo FAST-EXPANDING Colourfast has signed a deal with Duplo at drupa for new print finishing equipment that will open up new business opportunities in the servicing of London financial clients. Colourfast signed the order at the show for a Duplo 350 Digital Booklet System, as well as other accessories. Managing Director Darren Bacon says the investments is vital for continuing growth at a company started nine years ago that employs 20 people and has a £2.2m turnover. It will work alongside Colourfast’s 14

Konica Minolta digital print systems. “I’m glad we’ve signed at drupa,” said Darren. “A lot of printers forget about the finishing, but it’s the most important process. In the financial markets, as in any other, it’s always a case of rush, rush rush. So we needed to find a system for larger stitched pagination. Our previous system only went up to 48 pages. “We did look at the competition but, in truth, we were always going to buy from Duplo, which has the most reliable print finishing equipment and great back-up

service, as well as extremely friendly and knowledgeable staff.” Robin Greenhalgh, Duplo International Chairman, said: “Colourfast understands the importance of print finishing in a

smarter, faster and better way. We’re delighted to have signed this deal for systems providing precision automation on our stand at drupa so early in the show.” www.duplouk.com

London’s City Printing installs PUR from Morgana LONDON-BASED City Printing Ltd has become the latest UK print business to equip itself with a PUR binder from Morgana Systems. The DigiBook 200 installation also included a Morgana AutoCreaser Pro 33 to further assist the post-press operation of the busy London print business. Whilst City Printing Managing Director Michael Peters has been a big Morgana fan for some 20 years, his first venture with PUR binding had been with another supplier: “We had used a competitors machine, but we were not able to produce the ultra short-runs as cost effectively as we had hoped. The DigiBook 200 is definitely a significant improvement – it requires minimal set-up, produces minimal waste, and because of the sealed glue tank, you can produce a single copy of a publication and not waste huge amounts of adhesive.” City Printing handles a wide range of digitally printed run-lengths from one through to several thousand. The DigiBook 200 has proved to be both cost efficient and highly productive whatever the quantity.

“We produced one job recently – a booklet with a run of 200 copies. We were able to print and bind the job in a single afternoon. We used to have to put PUR work out to a trade binder, so having this machine in-house effectively saved us over two days compared to the last time that we produced it!” The company also added a Morgana AutoCreaser Pro 33 to its range of finishing equipment in order to crease publication covers prior to binding. Commenting on Morgana as a supplier, Michael Peters said: “They are a great company to work with. The machines do exactly what Morgana say they will do, the machines are reliable, simple to operate, the technical back-up from the company is excellent, and, very importantly, they are really nice people!” Digital printing at City Printing is created via a mix of Xerox, Ricoh, and OKI engines, producing a wide range of commercial work. The company employs a team of ten people. Commenting on this latest Morgana equipment order, Ray Hillhouse, Vice President Offline

Business at Morgana Systems said: “The variety of production speeds offered by our DigiBook range provides machines to suit all print businesses. The 200 model is ideal for the needs of City Printing, where the fast turnaround of orders in a variety of quantities is the typical requirement. The quality of PUR bound books is fast becoming the standard that print buyers are expecting. Companies that are serious about providing quality bound products now know that a PUR investment is an essential.” www.cityprintingltd.co.uk www.morgana.co.uk

reduces the time needed to handle jobs, improves lead times, saves staff time and reduces machine set-up times. Alternatively, large capacity trolley stacking units are available for off-line finishing. As the ineo 1250e staples and punches at the full rated speed of 7,500 A4 impressions an hour there is no loss of speed for producing finished documents as against sheet production. Importantly for the public sector and corporate customers seeking to ensure minimal environmental impact, the ineo 1250e conforms to the guidelines of the international Energy Star Program for reduced energy consumption and improved efficiency.

For DSales (UK) Jonathan Whitworth, Managing Director stated, “The enhanced ineo 1250e offers a range of versatile finishing options for fast end-to-end job throughput. We know that mono production still accounts for the vast majority of printed output by CRDs, inplant print rooms, data centres and commercial printers. The ineo 1250e has been designed as a workhorse device for customer applications that require production of large volumes of black and white documentation. The versatility, speed and robust duty cycle of the ineo 1250e make it the ideal system for our customers’ mono production needs. www.dsales.eu

FT Solutions launches 3D printing with Canon CANON has announced that FT Solutions has extended its service offering to incorporate 3D printing, having installed its first ProJet 660Pro. The new division, named FT3D, will establish new 3D services, such as giving customers the opportunity to print photorealistic 3D printed figurines alongside their favourite sports or entertainment celebrity. Working with some of the world’s biggest brands, FT Solutions has provided communication solutions including print management, digital print and online media for more than 25 years. The company is a Royal Warrant Holder for ‘delivering excellent service and quality’ to the Household of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and prides itself on innovating and investing in the technology required to deliver such service. Cutting-edge hardware such as the ProJet 660Pro will allow the company to continue to meet the needs of its

customers. Tom Gurd, Managing Director at FT Solutions, has been considering 3D printing for some time and believes the new business unit could generate in excess of £500,000 revenue in the first year alone. “3D printing represents a huge opportunity, enabling us to expand our offering, provide a new type of service, and achieve a faster time to market for our clients. We already have an exciting pipeline made up of existing and new clients excited to see how the technology can add an extra dimension to their brand marketing and customer interaction proposition,” Gurd explains. FT Solutions has a close working relationship with Canon, having been a customer for nearly 20 years. Gurd continues, “The team at Canon has indepth knowledge of our business and technology needs – their consultation has been first class and confirmed that this is absolutely the right

partnership for us. We’re excited to be working with Canon as we look to expand our 3D printing proposition in the future.” The ProJet 660Pro creates full-colour parts in exceptional high quality. With some of the fastest print speeds available, businesses can transform ideas into reality in hours, at a very low cost per part. www.canon.co.uk

UK’s first HP PageWide XL 5000 at Go Cre8 STANFORD Marsh, an independent solutions provider for the wideformat and 3D print sectors — and one of only three UK vendors able to supply and service HP’s new PageWide XL Series of products — has installed the UK’s first HP PageWide XL5000 printer at Liverpool-based Go Cre8. Founded in 2003, Go Cre8 is a multidisciplinary design and print company and prides itself on providing professional services in design, print, display and new media at fair, affordable rates. Employing seven full-time staff, the company’s clients include small and medium sized businesses, local authorities, and agencies nationwide. The company initially heard about HP PageWide technology at the start of 2015 courtesy of HP’s marketing campaign and decided to visit Sign & Digital UK at NEC Birmingham last year to find out more. At the show, Go Cre8’s project manager Paul Lin met with Stanford Marsh’s Julian Mennell on the HP stand and discussed how the companies could work together. Paul Lin explains: “We wanted a fast, cost-effective poster printer and — from what we were reading — the HP PageWide XL technology seemed to fit the bill. We wanted to increase productivity, whilst freeing up our Océ Arizona flatbed printer for more profitable work. “We’re very happy with our Arizona printer as it’s cost-effective to run on the roll to roll setting. However, it was

slower when using the roll option — 17 square metres per hour compared to roughly 450 square metres per hour on the PageWide — and this meant we had to run poster jobs overnight which wasn’t ideal.” In contrast, the HP PageWide XL 5000 Printer provides fast, powerful and efficient monochrome and colour prints in a single device with up to 30 percent savings in total production costs. It provides companies such as Go Cre8 with the ability to costeffectively produce posters at speeds of up to 14 AO size posters a minute. The printer was seamlessly installed at the company’s Liverpool base in December 2015, and since that time Go Cre8 has been using the HP PageWide XL 5000 Printer to quickly and efficiently produce POS posters to deliver a rapid turnaround on jobs. It offers a huge jump in productivity, thus leaving the Arizona free to print to other more bespoke substrates and applications. Stanford Marsh’s Julian Mennell explains: “Having taken the time to understand Go Cre8’s requirements and the competitive market in which they operate, it was refreshing to be working with a company that had the vision to be early adopters in PageWide technology. Go Cre8 is well-versed on the technical side and knew what they wanted; it was down to us to facilitate supplying a solution that would meet these needs and also offer them a vessel to open up the business into new vertical markets.

“Paul Lin and his business partner Darryn Kennerly have a great vision for their business, and with PageWide we’ve helped them unlock the potential of their creativity with a device that excels the current business needs and gives them the potential to unlock new markets.” Stanford Marsh is working alongside Go Cre8 on an ongoing basis and continually developing new materials for use in the HP PageWide XL 5000 Printer. Go Cre8 recently required a blue back product which Stanford Marsh was able to source and convert for use in the PageWide machine. Julian Mennell adds: “Our media development for PageWide technology continues apace and we have recently successfully tested high volume canvas printing with outstanding results. The potential for HP PageWide technology is massive.” On working with Stanford Marsh, Paul Lin is very complimentary: “They’ve been great. Any minor

issues we’ve had have been resolved very quickly. If I put in a call to Julian Mennell, he will respond to me within the hour “When any minor issues have occurred, the information errors are fed back to HP in Barcelona, where they quickly develop a new firmware update to solve the problem. Matthew Perkins, Director at Stanford Marsh, concludes: “The HP PageWide marks a significant change in the wide-format graphics arena. As well as working with Go Cre8, we’ve been working with a client in the UK who has invested in four fully-configured HP PageWide XL 8000 Printers to meet an incredible estimated volume of four million printed square metres per annum! I’m convinced that early adoptees of this ground-breaking technology will see a quick return on investment and be able to compete in new markets.” www.stanfordmarsh.co.uk www.gocre8.co.uk

Duplo cites The Print Show as a ‘great opportunity’ FINISHING systems specialist Duplo has become the latest major brand to commit to The Print Show this year by signing up to exhibit at the event in October. Sarah Crumpler, Duplo UK marketing manager, finalised the show contract with event director Chris Davies at this year’s drupa, where both Duplo and The Print Show were in attendance to spread the word about their respective messages. Duplo will be able to build on the interest generated at drupa by focusing more on the UK at The Print Show, which is dedicated to the UK market. Taking place at the NEC in Birmingham from October 11th to 13th, this year’s event will welcome a wide range of companies, each of which will benefit from a heavy interest in the show, following the success of last year’s inaugural event. One of the highlights on Duplo’s stand at The Print Show will be the UK debut of its PFi Di-CUT 300, which, like all products and solutions from the manufacturer, has been designed to enable faster turnaround times with smart technology advances and better workflow integration. Speaking about the decision to exhibit at The Print Show, Sarah said: “drupa has been going exceptionally for well Duplo. Now we are looking forward to being part of a UK national show later where our prospects and customers of the Duplo family can visit to see our latest systems. “The Print Show will be another great opportunity to show live demonstrations of how our systems are smarter, faster and better.” Davies was also keen to air his views on the decision, stating that Duplo will be a ‘real asset’ for The Print Show this year, as the event looks to go from strength to strength, He added: “Having Duplo aboard will be a real asset. It is a company that has

an enviable reputation in the whole print industry, not only as in producing great products and delivering great service, but also as a company that supports wider education and business. This is going to be a great show. “Another important factor to Duplo joining our exhibitor ranks is that its brand identity and loyal customer base will also no doubt be even more of a motivating factor for more visitors to attend The Print Show 2016 as we look to smash the target of 6,000 visitors in our second year.” www.theprintshow.com

OKI Systems UK Plans a Dazzling Print Show FOLLOWING the success of last year’s inaugural Print Show, OKI Systems UK has signed up for a return visit this year — with an even larger stand (AO1 at NEC, Birmingham, 11th-13th October 2016). The show will be an ideal place for OKI to demonstrate its new range of commercial standard Pro Series printers featuring in-built digital graphic arts technology with vibrant four and five colour capability. Based on innovative technology that challenges traditional printing processes these printers combine outstanding print quality with low cost per page and, as a result, open up new opportunities and on-demand revenue streams for print houses and other creative businesses. OKI’s range includes the newly-launched Pro6410 Neon colour printer which offers high definition LED colour printing with ground-breaking neon toner technology for clothes decoration or for other design purposes such as POS or education. This enables businesses to offer glowing fluorescent effects on either dark or light T-shirts or other garments or for eye-catching POS promotional designs or educational materials. The neon white toner can also be used as a security mark revealed only when checked under black UV light or to provide a white background for transfer to dark substrates. Each printer in the Pro series is designed to offer outstanding quality colour print with money-saving features such as high-capacity consumables. The Pro9541 offers the option of printing the full range of process colours with the addition of a fifth spot colour in either white or clear gloss. The Pro9542 digital LED A3 colour printer delivers high density, white-under printing in a single pass for stand-out results on a wide range of materials including coloured and transparent media. Following OKI’s acquisition of Seiko I Infotech Inc, it will also be displaying its range of large format graphic printers – the ColorPainter range. These print on widths up to 104” for signs, vehicle graphics, banners, POP displays, awnings and other wide format uses. “We were very pleased at the success of last year’s show and have no hesitation in returning this year as we know that many professionals will be

interested in the opportunities these new OKI printers present. Achieving high resolution full colour plus white is an advantage to any print or graphics business, as is the ability to print on garments and other substrate. We believe this will help print shops diversify and increase their revenue while adding their own value and creative touch,” says Andrew Hall, marketing manager, OKI Systems UK. www.okieurope.com

drupa through and through

Yes this year drupa lived up to its four-year build up and no doubt the next one will achieve 2020 print vision too. We have filled these pages in recent months with most of what we expected to happen. So rather than repeat news on product launches etc. sit back and enjoy something new.

N

OT A LOT of British visitors, surprisingly few Dutch too. This drupa was truly global with hoards of visitors from Asia and Africa. Xerox built its usual wall to hide the competition behind, yet KM made the break through worthwhile. Our main digital print ‘press’ suppliers have once again used the exhibition to show off new technology but this time have kit to sell not just slow down others decisions. So all the cards are on the table and inkjet presses are looking good, will they always need special paper though? It will be interesting to follow some of the orders taken at the show in the coming months as pioneers are good to copy and prices become more affordable with the economies of scale, just look at 3D printer pricing. As the master race have often told us, it is not the size of the thing, it is what you do with it! Print applications are where we should focus and making customers documents work best for them. Starting with design to warrant attention, variable data to engage, quality to impress. Yes presentation is still where the prophet shines. Follow print gurus especially Kevin O’Donnell @ KODonnellX to keep you up to date and positive with print. Don’t forget to finish in fashion, keep in mind the choice of media, size up the best shape for scope and sizzle, take tactile feelings to a new level. Finally distribution, marketing messaging to the point of need, check out Neopost for fulfilment of all your customers print. If quoting is price sensitive, just aim to deliver value. You can’t be faster, cheaper (sorry, more cost-effective) and the best quality. Know your strengths and sell to those, a Dutch auction is no good for our industry. Being local for taking a brief, showing samples, discussions offering

best advice, proofing, contingency planning and of course delivery is your trump card. Check out your customers CSR corporate social responsibility statements, they should be using you. If you didn’t peep through the new wonderful world of neon colour on the OKI stand then don’t panic, back in good old blighty, we are already brightening up our stand out customers. Check out the QPP new profit centre feature.

this is our third helped make the final decision. We know and trust the reliability and consistency Horizon deliver.” Before the decision was made a thorough review of solutions on the market was undertaken. Says Dible: “We decided to come to drupa and test other options on the market. Some were more entry-level than we wanted and in the end it came down to two. We liked the Horizon’s ability to handle landscape A4. This is something we are currently sending out so now we can keep that cost in house and save time. “We also liked that fact that Horizon has obviously listened to some of the points raised by customers and updated the SPF-FC200L to reflect that. New blowers have been added to aid the feeding, the knife fold is now gear driven, deflectors prevent books from coming out at an angle and sensors have been fitted to ensure smoother running.” He adds: “With all these benefits and the increased capacity we expect ROI in around two years.” Capable of 4,500bph, the Horizon SPF/FC-200L combines all the highly automated features of the successful SPF/FC200A booklet maker with the ability to feed A4 landscape sheets up to 640mm in length. JDF-ready, the system offers instant set-ups via a large icon-based colour touchscreen for user-friendly operation. The screen can be used for on-the-run fine tune adjustments as well as the store and recall of up to 200 jobs. As for the longstanding partnership with IFS he states: “The good relationship we have with IFS was also important. We have never had any problems and the phone service has always been great. It is a good company to work with.” www.ifsl.uk.com

BUS RIDE IS TICKET TO CLICKS INVESTMENT WITH DUPLO

After a tour of five finishing solutions providers at drupa Salisbury Printing Company chose a Horizon SPF-FC/200L landscape feed bookletmaker, supplied by IFS. The deal was signed on Horizon’s stand. It will replace a single tower SPF-20 that was 12 to 15 years old. Explains Director Paul Dible: “This will be the third generation Horizon booklet making system that we have invested in. Our existing solution has been in operation for many years and it was time to upgrade. The fact that

Duplo has made its pitch for the fastest piece of business at drupa 2016, with the sale of a Multigraf Touchline CF375 creaser/folder that was agreed on the bus to the Messe Duesseldorf before the show had even opened! up for the system to replace an aging creaser/ folder, and will benefit from enhanced efficiency, ease of use and automation of job changeover. Duplo has been the UK distributor for innovative Swiss-made Multigraf creasing/folding technology for many years. The Touchline CF375 is noteable for its top-feeding capability, which means that an operator can concentrate on other tasks while creasing and folding takes place. Peter Jolly, Managing Director of Duplo UK, said: “In keeping with our ethos of Automated Precision, the Touchline CF375 takes the labour out of creasing and folding. It’s also highly versatile and very easy to use. “Clicks Print is an innovative company and it has been a pioneer in the UK market in taking our Layflat technology for photobooks. What it will gain from investing in the Multigraf Touchhline is workflow efficiency and far more effective use of labour“ Alan Rigglesford, Managing Director of Clicks Print, said: “This is a real upgrade for us and it will definitely reduce our bottlenecks. We started talking to Duplo about a month ago and had a demonstration of the Touchline at their UK showroom. I was delighted to inform Peter of our decision to invest this morning as we travelled to drupa.” www.duplointernational.com

CREWE CREW STOP BY TO ORDER NEW KIT FROM HEIDELBERG AT DRUPA

Joint managing directors of Crewe Colour Printers Phil Edwards and Simon Hughes signed an order at drupa for a Versafire CV digital press and an automated Stahlfolder CH 66. The folder, which will be delivered in August, has been chosen to supplement the work of three more manual Ti52s. The flat pile feeder and quick set up times on the CH 66 will allow the company to mop up all the section work and a diverse range of sheeted jobs. “It will make life much easier for the three folder operators who will run the machine round the clock over three eight hour shifts,” says Simon Hughes. “The speed of set up and the quality of fold across a range of work is the key to this investment.” It will process work from a Speedmaster CD 74-5 and the new Versafire CV which is replacing a Linoprint C901. Now Crewe Colour Printers will have the facility to handle the larger six page A4 format and provide coatings on its digital technology. “We believe these investments will help us to

keep our reputation for providing good quality and reliable service to our customers. We like the way Heidelberg looks after us; their service and support is second to none. We would not buy a digital press from any other supplier,” says Phil Edwards. Crewe Colour Printers, based at a 15,000sq ft factory in Sandbach, is over 40 years old and employs 22 staff. It offers a design to finishing service across a broad range of commercial work, primarily for a north-west customer base. www.heidelberg.co.uk

SLAM SIGNS INVESTS IN NEW SURECOLOR LARGE FORMAT PRINTER

Signage and printing company Slam Signs (www. slamsigns.com) has invested in a four colour SureColor SC-S40600 large format printer. It is the company’s third SureColor - it has owned a SCS30600 since its launch in 2012 and purchased its eight colour SC-S70600 in 2015. Based in St Albans, Hertfordshire, Slam Signs provides a complete design and print service to a wide range of customers - from small start-ups to well-known nationwide companies - and has been in business since 2007. It produces a variety of products including vehicle graphics/digital wraps, shop fascias and signage, window graphics, banners/roller banners, internal and external signage, POS and pop-up exhibition displays. Purchased from authorised Epson reseller Papergraphics (www.paper-graphics.com), the SC-S40600 is one of three new 64-inch SureColor professional signage printers launched earlier this year. Its new design and production features combine to offer market-leading quality at the fastest possible speeds — up to 58.4sqm/hr - with precise repeatability and long-term durability. The affordable, entry-level SC-S40600 features Epson’s PrecisionCore printhead and offers Slam Signs a precise and accurate way to create high-quality graphics on a range of substrates including clear film, vinyl, canvas and paper. Working in tandem with Epson’s new formulation UltraChrome GS3 inks, the printer produces a wide range of highly accurate colours. Slam Signs business partners David Jorge and Jodie Banfather say the new SureColor range is impressive: “You can tell Epson has thought carefully about the design and build. Installation and set-up is straightforward and simple - things like the addition of a large, clear LED-lit inspection panel for viewing the printing area once printing is in full flow make the printer easy to use. We know that we can rely on Epson’s engineering to give us high quality and productivity with full back-up and support should we need it.” Slam Signs is particularly impressed with the speed and the highly accurate and repeatable colour reproduction of the SureColor range: “The output speed is excellent and the wider colour gamut gives amazing quality and clarity. Whatever substrate is being printed, we can be confident that the colours will match consistently. I’m sure our customers are going to appreciate the results and I’m certain it’s going to open up whole

new opportunities for our display and specialist applications.” Phil McMullin, Sales Manager, ProGraphics, Epson UK, says: “Everything about the design of the new SureColor SC-S series is centred on improving the printing experience for the user and reducing cost of ownership. The printers lead the market in offering the very best combination of quality, speed and price and truly mark the pinnacle of Epson’s knowledge and expertise in one range.” www.epson.co.uk

DUPLO TURNS TABLES FOR SHOW STATS VALE PRESS IN SURPRISE As the 11-day trade fair drew to a close the 1,837 exhibitors from 54 countries unanimously reported DRUPA CALL

The three Stowe brothers walked past the Duplo stand at drupa. Nothing unusual until a call, ‘Hey, Tom, Oliver, Ed — come over here, you’ll love this new iSaddle System’. Less than two hours later they were drinking champagne with Duplo UK MD Peter Jolly and salesman Jason Davies, who’d just made one of the best calls of his life. In what turned out to be a total random, off-thecuff sale — nothing planned beforehand — Vale Press is now going to be the proud owner of a Duplo iSaddle System. Now the print finishing system, which has an industry-first capability of short-run A4 landscape work, will be installed in Vale Press’s premises in Willersey, Gloucestershire, in around six weeks’ time. “I still can’t believe we did that,” mused Tom Stowe, managing director of the company that specialises in trade print work and has been a Duplo customer for 10 years. “We’d already committed to a new Heidelberg press so our total investment at drupa is now virtually a million pounds. “Yes, our print finishing systems probably need a refresh even though they have been incredibly reliable. But if Jason hadn’t made that call, we’d definitely have walked on past and not done the deal. “We were persuaded to buy the Duplo iSaddle System because it has full automation, easy workflow systems and is the only system on the market that has short-run A4 landscape capability, which is increasingly being demanded by customers.” Peter Jolly said: “Neither could we believe the deal happened there and then, but the Duplo iSaddle System turned out to be exactly what they needed. They have been loyal customers and know we will exceed, not just meet their expectations.” www.duplouk.com

excellent business deals, extremely promising contacts and a positive spirit for the global print industry. Some 260,000 visitors from 188 countries and some 1,900 journalists from 74 countries travelled to Düsseldorf to learn about technology innovations, further developments and new business lines. Visitors’ decision-making competence is extremely high: approximately 75% of all visitors were executives and in a decisionmaking or co-decision-making capacity when it comes to capital expenditure in their companies. Various other indicators produced by the visitors’ survey also underscore very clearly that drupa is a flawless B2B trade fair and platform for business decisions: 54% of visitors came to drupa 2016 with concrete investment intentions; 29% placed orders during drupa; 30% are planning to place their orders after drupa; 60% found new suppliers at drupa. The development in visitor attendance (2012: 314,248) reflects the worldwide consolidation occurring in the industry. This is why visitors’ high decision-making competence produced a particularly positive effect, all the more as one in two visitors expected their companies’ business to develop very well over the next twelve months. “Customers — with very few exceptions — no longer come with large delegations or as part of a company outing to drupa. It is rather the top managers that travel to Düsseldorf today — and from 188 countries to this drupa,” explains Werner Matthias Dornscheidt, President & CEO of Messe Düsseldorf GmbH. drupa 2016: global No. 1 trade fair - Totalling 76%, the percentage of international visitors is up 16% from four years ago. This figure can be attributed to Asian visitors: 17% of international visitors came from this continent alone (2012: 13.6%). And here India accounted for the largest share with 5%, followed by China with 3%. The leading European countries were Italy, France, the Netherlands and the UK. “This means that drupa has enhanced its global market significance and its international rating even further. It is the unrivalled global No. 1 trade fair for the print and media industries,” says Werner Matthias Dornscheidt commenting on the results of drupa 2016. drupacity: an experience for all - And drupa

does not stop at the gates of the exhibition centre. Instead, Düsseldorf presented itself with a versatile programme as an attractive trade fair destination for all things drupa: be it an exhibition or 3D event, discussion forums or a “rolling lab”: drupacity allowed thousands of interested visitors to experience the trade fair themes — live and hands-on right in the city centre — providing both drupa visitors and exhibitors with tangible added value and a concept that is truly “one of a kind” worldwide. “Our concept of bringing the drupa themes to the city thereby making it possible for people to understand and experience technology has paid off 100%. Thanks to numerous city-centre activities Düsseldorf citizens and visitors were able relate to the trade fair themes. drupacity proved an experience for all,” reworked Boris Neisser, General Manager at the trade association Destination Düsseldorf, which organised the drupacity programme, who went on to say: “The many multipliers from all over the world felt welcome in Düsseldorf and will return to their home countries with these positive impressions. This is “city marketing live” representing a locational advantage not to be underestimated for our city.” As announced at the midpoint of drupa, the event will stick to its four-year cycle meaning he next drupa will be held from 23 June to 3 July 2020. www.drupa.de

Pressing the Right Buttons

A classic radio exchange between Lewis Hamilton and his engineer in the pits during the European Grand Prix will be familiar to anyone who has sat on the end of a phone listening to a computer “help” line. In his frustration over being stuck in the wrong engine mode, the Formula One World Champion is about to press all the buttons to see which one does the trick. Martin Christie writes…

I

’M SURE WE have all got close, at some time or other, to being tempted to re-programme an unresponsive computer with a large sledge hammer, but fortunately none of us, in our own working environment, is rushing between brick walls at 200mph. Lewis’ problem is that his helpline can’t give him the information he needs because of the sport’s rules on giving drivers assistance to their performance. For us, mere mortals, the problem is often just trying to understand the information, and take the appropriate action to sort the problem. At the sharp end of print on demand, we have to solve the problem, as all is always needed urgently regardless of the complications. The pace may not be as frantic as a grand prix, but the stress levels can reach into the danger zone. It is a regular subject of comment in this column, but I often like to draw a topical parallel to reassure new readers that they are not alone in the daily battle that is the confrontation between customer and technology, and the gap between expectation and practical reality. They may want to go racing, but provide you with a horse and cart. They may want a Ferrari but only want to pay for a Škoda. Finding a balance within a budget and a time frame is often the most challenging task, but often doing it the quickest and cheapest way isn’t the best. One common problem is sorting out customers product images to look presentable whether for print in a catalogue, or for any screen presentation. Having experience of both shooting, and editing customers items I was intrigued to received details of a dedicated product shooting studio that has definitely gone the root of the Ferrari. International technology pioneers StyleShoots have taken the art of the product to the highest level. To the layman, cutting an item out from its background probably seems a simple task, especially if they have an app in their phone that

appears to do that, what’s the problem? The problem, as anyone has tried to do it professionally will have learnt, is trying to do it cleanly and accurately, as well as consistently if you are handling a large number of similar images. As a photographer, I have considerable experience shooting product, back to the days of film. Then it was for print, when any issues could be sorted in the reproduction studio, before going to plate. Now, shooting for web, it is vital to get it right pretty well straight from camera to hard drive. That’s where the StyleShoots rigs — two of them in fact — come in. They take out almost all of the possibilities of error, and improve both workflow and output. The problem for any items that cannot be conveniently scanned, is that they have to be photographed. Digital technology has brought image capture into everybody’s palms, but with it has come a lack of expertise due to a lack of understanding of the equipment. This resulted in a vast difference in the quality of images uploaded to various websites, which might have been acceptable in the early primitive days of the internet, but not today when anyone who wants to make their site look professional needs to have images that meet that standard. This need is most critical in the clothing industry with a wide range of products of all shapes and sizes, and a fast turnover of styles, which also places a vital importance on exact colour matching if items bought on line are not to be returned. The conventional formula needs a photographic studio with flash or continuous lighting, and an experienced photographer who understands not only the importance of correct exposure to ensure vital detail, but can set correct colour balance to allow for different hues and reflective or matt surfaces. I have been along this learning curve with several clients previously, all of whom started with “it’s ok we know someone with a very good camera” and all of whom ended with “can you come over and see us please”. Of course it’s not all down to the photographer, you need a stylist, someone who understands the clothing and how to present it to its best depending on the material and the cut of the garment. And you also need a method of display, whether a mannequin or the humble coat hanger. Then there’s the

matter of efficiency, which is a trade off if there are a lot of items to be got through in a session. How to maximise the shoot to get the most done, at the best quality, in the shortest time. It’s always going to be a compromise between the competing priorities. And of course, it’s also a learning curve, as although digital photography has improved immensely, there is still no automatic mode that overrides the role of a competent person on the shutter. So when the press release from StyleShoots arrived, and the main unique sales proposition seemed to be that you could dispense with the photographer, I was naturally sceptical to say the least. But with a little further investigation I found that behind the sales brochure blurb they did have some very valid points, and a lot of hard work and clever thinking had gone into the results. So I invited myself up to their smart studio set-up in London’s Business Design Centre to find out more. The essential profile is that it’s a very sophisticated and well thought out system designed to be easy to use. And while it doesn’t make competent operators entirely redundant, it means they aren’t an absolute priority, because it takes a lot of possible errors out at source. There are in fact two rigs, one vertical and one horizontal — think flatbed — to cope with the different garments, and the preferred style of shooting. A t-shirt, for example, can be laid flat to show shape, or placed over a mannequin to show body form. Even the mannequin is high tech as it has adjustable parts to form different shapes, and it was interesting to compare notes with all of the little details and lessons learned from shooting experience. As well as the morphing mannequin, there are accessories like podiums and caddies for shoes, and handbags, everything you would possibly want to shoot in a brand range. At the heart of the system is a built in Canon EOS 5D Mk III camera and lens, award winning full-spectrum Rotolight LEDs, acid-etched glass paneling, proprietary software and electronics with an iPad to control it all. The continuous lights, and the camera are all fully adjustable from the touch screen of the ipad and this is the really tricky bit, you don’t have to touch the Canon at all to focus or fiddle about with settings — it’s built into the rig with only the lens poking out so it can’t be knocked or tampered with accidentally. You control what you save accurately and consistently directly on the iPad without needing to waste time downloading and converting files. It also does the cut out automatically, not by laboriously snipping round the pixels in a photo edit, but by taking two images, the second of which is backlit to separate the image in the foreground from the background, as well as cancelling out any shadows. The two are then compared and merged to form one. As the lighting is also fully adjustable, not only in intensity, but in direction, it can be altered to handle the different reflective nature of a garment’s material. This was perhaps what impressed me most as a photographer, because it’s one of the hardest things to explain to someone who isn’t. When you can

vivid-online.com

actually see the effects, and control them with your fingers on a screen, it becomes much easier to understand. You will have guessed by now that this is not a cheap bit of kit that your average high street shop is going to shell out on — let alone have room for. We are talking blue chip brands, Zalando, M&S etc, where the hardware cost will save them a fortunate in man hours, speed up process, and just as importantly provide them with brilliant web images which will be consistent in colour, and accurate in size and shape. It is however a possible bureau service for a progressive company with enough existing or potential customers for its unique potential. There is, after all, no alternative but the conventional photographic studio set up, and professional expertise, which does not come cheap. It’s still comparatively early days for StyleShoots in the UK, so they are interested in exploring all possible avenues, and it was certainly interesting for me to see a solution to a problem I know all about, coming from a different direction. As with everything digital it is, and will continue to be, a massive learning curve, and we can all help each other along the way. PERMAJET ART ROAD SHOW

Permajet has been running an Art and Framing Roadshow Expo since April and visited Brighton Racecourse in June drawing interest in the trade from Sussex and the south coast. A leading inkjet media supplier, they also hosted nearly twenty other exhibitors featuring everything to do with framing and mounting in the fine art field. As well as new products, there were demonstrations of hand framing and cutting, including an impressive computer driven rig, as well as ready made options and all manner of tools and accessories. The specialist services often get overlooked at large print trade exhibitions so the idea of the roadshow was not only to reach all parts of the country, but to provide a more informal and relaxed atmosphere for the exchange of information and advice. While more people search for products on line, there is still a need for specialist products to be seen and handled, and to meet experts face to face. This is the second year of the roadshow and exhibitors have increased over most of the 14 venues. The tour resumes in September, heading north to Doncaster and Kendal, then down to the Oval, in London, before Ipswich, Plymouth and finally Cardiff. For full details of dates and exhibitors, check the Permajet website. www.artandframingroadshow.com

THE Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) will be exhibiting at this year’s Packaging Innovations show to promote the benefits of responsibly-sourced packaging materials. The show will be held at London’s Olympia on September 16 & 17th. PEFC Chain of Custody certification helps packaging companies demonstrate that they are sourcing raw materials from well managed forests. This enables them to differentiate their products in the market place and gain recognition for their commitment to sustainable sourcing. One such company is Delta Packaging Ltd., the Belfast-based independent printed folding carton packaging manufacturer. Earlier this year, Delta won a Global Connectivity award at a KFC Supplier event, for successfully switching KFC restaurant packaging to PEFC certified board. Delta Packaging won the award in recognition of the company’s swift and effective transfer of KFC raw material to the PEFC process, in order to provide assurances that KFC’s packaging materials originate from sustainablymanaged forests. Using certified materials has enabled KFC to apply the PEFC logo onto their packaging since the turn of the year. The company was presented with the Global Connectivity awards at the KFC Annual Supplier Awards, held on 19th March 2015. Another packaging products producer that has recognised the benefits of Chain of Custody certification is Benders Paper Cups, who are one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of paper hot cups. It was recently approached by Connect Vending, one of the leading independent vending operators in England, who enlisted its help to facilitate the business’s transition to 100% paper hot cups for their range of hot drinks vending machines. Connect Vending approached Benders looking to invest in a paper cup solution for their customers, which would offer what it called the “specialty coffee shop experience” of a paper cup, complete with bespoke branding and a quality feel, from the convenience of a vending machine. Benders Paper Cups is committed to only using certified raw materials from responsible sources and has both PEFC and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain of Custody certification, providing full traceability for all paper cups manufactured from materials sourced from sustainably-managed forests. The company also endorses the Connect Vending strategy. Every cup can be traced back from Benders BRC, Grade-A production facility in North Wales to the raw material. Connect Vending has developed their own print with Benders to promote the ‘green story’ of their cup, right up to encouraging consumers to dispose of the cup so that it can be collected and 100% recycled. Commenting on how sustainable sourcing can be of benefit to packaging producers, Alun Watkins, who heads up PEFC in the UK said, “We are delighted that more and more companies are investing in Chain of Custody certification which entitles them to use the PEFC ‘Two Trees’ label on their packaging. A recent PEFC global survey showed that more than 80% of

consumers globally, want companies sourcing certified material from responsibly-managed forests to use certification labels. In addition the research showed that labels, such as PEFC’s are the most trusted means of providing consumers with confidence that wood-based products are sustainably-sourced.” PEFC is the world’s leading forest certification system, and has certified more than 260 million hectares of forests to PEFC’s internationally recognised Sustainability Benchmarks, supplying more than 16,000 Chain of Custody certified companies with responsibly sourced timber and wood products, such as those used in producing fibre-based paper products such as packaging. Today, more and more companies from SMEs to global brands are keen to demonstrate that the fibre they use in their packaging comes from a certified sustainable source. This is important as consumers are increasingly conscious of the impact of their purchasing decisions on the environment www.pefc.co.uk

Onlineprinters 125,000th carbon neutral production WITHIN three years, the international online print service providers, Onlineprinters GmbH, has processed 125,000 climate-neutral orders through its 15 online shops. “Climateneutral printing” allows users to offset the greenhouse gas emissions produced while processing their orders. The carbon emissions and additional offset costs are calculated automatically during the order process. With just the click of a button, customers can choose the climate protection project with which the resulting emissions are to be compensated. “Three years ago we decided to give our customers the opportunity to offset their carbon footprint when ordering printed materials. Ever since, the number of Onlineprinters customers willing to take environmental responsibility has steadily increased,” says Dr Michael Fries, CEO of Onlineprinters GmbH. In total, the amount of CO₂ offset by Onlineprinters customers since 1 January 2013 equals the CO2 emissions of 2,000 cars with a mileage of 10,000 km each. The average cost per order remains surprisingly low, at about 0.86 percent of the order value. Onlineprinters customers can choose to support three different projects: forest protection in Brazil, hydroelectric power in Indonesia and wind energy in Turkey. More details on the environmental projects offered can be seen at any time during the order process. Tracing the carbon footprint offset - Climate-neutral print products can be labelled on request. A logo and a QR code can be downloaded and subsequently integrated into the print data. This way, the offset amount of CO₂, as well as the supported project, can be traced and continuously monitored. Onlineprinters GmbH is supported by ClimatePartner GmbH, which provides worldwide IT solutions for CO₂ accounting and offsetting. “Since 2013, we have processed over 350,000 climate neutral orders for more than 700 printers in Europe. More than a third were Onlineprinters customers”, says Moritz Lehmkuhl, Managing Director of ClimatePartner. Onlineprinters operates all online shops and the shipment of goods with logistics partner DPD CO₂-neutral. Production is also eco-friendly: Gang-run printing, in which several clients share a printing plate, allows for maximum effectiveness of paper use, reducing paper waste to a minimum. Finally, the central ink supply avoids unnecessary waste from ink cans or cartridges, and ensures that 100 percent of the ink is used. LAST month we reported that our test team had more profit ideas engraved in their mind. The task set was to turn £500 of blank promotional stock into a fully paid for, circa £2500 using a Roland impact printer from Rayner’s. Early indications are this is going to be the fastest return on investment ever with Father’s Day presents quadrupling our stock value. Leading by example we are proving that by upgrading some of the souvenir, prize and present products we produce inhouse, to a personalised engraved gift, that our customers have shown more loyalty to our existing print. Ha, no one else is doing this locally so news travels fast and with the occasional free present from a counter demonstration, we are not only securing our customer base but attracting new business too. For example, personalising a screened photo onto a polished metal keyring delivers outstanding quality and secures a mark up from a blank £2 to a unique one off gift of £10. Yes as forecast last month, proper profit from minimum outlay in stock. As we go to press the trial is in full flight, albeit a little delayed with our team playing away in the drupa league last month. One task being to design a coat of arms for a Scottish dancing group to engrave onto a hip flask. All very classy including our toast to turning a wee £7 into £35. Do drop in when next in Brighton for a demonstration from our counter machine set to entertain our walk in customers. Much more on this next month, in the meantime please contact Louisa at Rayner’s for brochures pricing etc. and do ask for the very special QPP pricing that could secure you a ROI in a remarkably short time. Creative Addition’s Font Outlining service PROMOTIONAL merchandise and print industry design specialists Creative Addition has announced some new services to their current offering. After many requests from current clients a need has been identified to offer the industry a low cost and reliable Font Outlining service. Graham Arnold, MD at Creative Addition commented “We’d recently been receiving a number of calls where clients were unable to proceed with orders due to font issues.” “To print fonts without error they should be outlined so that the font file isn’t required to print the order. The part our clients were struggling with was obtaining the outlined artwork from the end user who often has no knowledge of how to supply the file in the required format.” “We felt that our industry needed a quick, low cost answer to these problems and we think that at £8.00 per file and possible turn around times of one hour we can remove the barrier to getting orders back on track.” In addition, the guys at Creative Addition have long been striving for quality where sub-standard has often been provided by competitors. Graham Arnold added “Our core service is Vector logo redraws (usually creating print ready artworks from

website logos or scanned business cards), which we hand draw in-house using Adobe Illustrator but we’ve been noticing more frequently that many competitors are taking shortcuts and ‘live tracing’ artwork.” “This method produces what looks to be hand drawn vector artwork, but on closer inspection is a poor quality reproduction of the original logo. Whilst this method may pass quality checks on small products such as business cards or pens, the artwork would stand out like a sore thumb on larger format print such as roller banners or signage.” Creative Addition’s commitment to quality has also reaped rewards for the small design studio, as they have become the preferred artwork and design partner for members of the British Promotional Merchandise Association (BPMA). Graham Arnold continued, “We’re delighted that our hard work has been recognised. By continually producing a high standard of work we ensure that our clients keep coming back and most of our work comes through referrals. And now that we’re the BPMA’s preferred partner our customers know that when they use us that they are a reputable artwork studio.”

XYZprinting and Memjet join forces to create 3D

MEMJET has announced that XYZprinting, a market leader in 3D printing, will use Memjet’s patented printhead technology to increase the speed and affordability of its 3D printing platform. This is the first time Memjet’s printheads have been used for 3D printing. XYZprinting will use Memjet’s patented technology to create fast, price-competitive solutions capable of expanding 3D printing opportunities into new markets. Previews of XYZprinting’s Memjet-based 3D printing platform were seen on the Memjet stand at drupa. XYZprinting is a market leader in 3D printing solutions. Incorporating Memjet’s printheads into its 3D printing platform enables the company to dramatically increase the speed of powder-based 3D object creation. With Memjet-powered 3D printers, objects can be created up to five times faster than with other 3D printing solutions in the same class. In addition to being faster, Memjet-powered 3D printers create a more affordable printing solution, giving businesses a cost-effective way to add 3D printing to their range of services. Simon Shen, CEO of XYZprinting and its parent company, New Kinpo Group, says, “The past year has been a time of growth both for 3D printing and for XYZprinting. We introduced several 3D printer models at the CES 2016 show, and will launch the new da Vinci Mini Series 3D printer and 3D pen this summer. Our partnership with Memjet enables us to build on this success, giving us the technology we need to dramatically enhance the speed and economy of our business-class solutions.” www.memjet.com or www.xyzprinting.com

Where next for Creative Addition? “We’re looking to add web design and animated videos to our offering over the next few months.” Graham continued, “We want to add some services that will help our clients generate leads and sales. Our Product Visual service is fast becoming popular and our ability to create stunning product visuals has been helping our clients win some big orders from some big brand clients. The more we can help our clients become successful then that in turn helps us become more successful, it’s a win win situation that we look to create.” For more information speak to Graham on 01253 963 253 or visit www.creativeaddition.com

UK’s first super-large scale 3D printer AFTER the official unveiling of the Massivit 1800 at drupa, Papergraphics has announced it has sold the UK’s first Massivit 3D printer to one of the country’s leading graphic production companies, Stylo. Standing at a height of 2.6m and width of 2.4m, the machine is the only 3D printer in the world that enables customers to create bespoke 3D sculptures up to 1.8m high, 1.5m wide, with a depth of up to 1.2m. Couple this with its capability to print up to one foot per hour and it is a technological innovation that will significantly evolve the visual communication market. With the ability to create super-large scale objects in a few hours, the system is expected to open up realms of new possibilities to a variety of industries including the entertainment, events, retail, and signage sectors. As of March this year, Papergraphics became the sole distributor of the Massivit 1800 large format 3D printer for UK and Ireland markets. Doug Gilbertson, Director at Papergraphics, comments: “The launch of the Massivit 1800 marks a big step forward for the print industry and we are delighted to be the sole distributor for the UK and Ireland markets. We are at the cusp of the 3D printing revolution as the capabilities of this printer opens up the market to a multitude of industries that previously had limited access. The first sale of the printer to Stylo showcases the agility of the printer and we’re excited to keep working closely with them as we continue to provide after-sale support. It’s an exciting period and we’re proud to be at the forefront alongside Massivit as the printer comes to the shores of the UK and Ireland.” www.massivit3d.com

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCE As a kid, parent-teacher conferences were embarrassing and awkward for my parents and me. My teacher made my parents write on the blackboard one hundred times, “We will not have any more children.”

MODERN DAY MEDICAL TERMS Two young girls were reading when one girl said to the other, “I’m never having kids.” “Why?” said the other. And the girl replied, “Because I heard they take nine months to download.” Complimentary Insult or Insulting Compliment Ever been told something, but you can’t decide if it’s a compliment or an insult? Recently, when I greeted my co-worker, she said, “You look so gorgeous, I didn’t recognise you!”

DING-DONG The hunchback of Notre dame dies so they need to find a new bell-ringer. This guy with no arms comes along and says he can do it. “but you’ve got no arms!” everyone explains. He says I’ll use my mouth. So he uses his mouth to ring the bell and goes flying out of the window because the bell is so heavy. He’s lying dead on the ground and a big crowd gathers. “who’s that guy?” one person says. “I don’t know, but his face rings a bell”

NEED SOME COLLATERAL I accompanied my husband when he went to get a haircut. Reading a magazine, I found a hairstyle I liked for myself. I asked the receptionist if I could take the magazine next door to make a copy of the photo. “Leave some ID, a driver’s licence or a credit card,” she said. “But my husband is here getting a haircut,” I explained. “Yes,” she replied. “But I need something you’ll come back for.”

THEY’RE BITING TODAY “Poor Old fool,” thought the gentleman as he watched an old man trying to fish in a puddle of water outside of the bar. He decided to invite the old man inside for a drink. As they sipped their whiskeys, the gentleman thought he’d humour the old man and asked, “So how many have you caught so far?” The old man replied, “You’re the eighth today.”

HOW FAR WE’VE COME IN EQUALITY Whenever I see a woman driving a bus I smile and think about how far we, as a society, have come in equality. And then I wait for the next bus.

HONESTY IS THE BEST… A man was standing in front of the bathroom mirror one evening admiring his reflection, when he posed the following question to his wife of 20 years, “Will you still love me when I’m old, fat, and balding?” She answered, “Of course I will. I’ve already been doing it for the past five years haven’t I?”

VISITING GRANDMA Grandma, who was becoming an ever more intimidating personality as the years went on, was giving directions to her grown grandson who was coming to visit with his wife: “You come to the front door of the apartment complex. I am in flat 14T. There is a big panel at the door. With your elbow push button 14T. I will buzz you in. Come inside, the elevator is on the right. Get in, and with your elbow hit 14. When you get out I am on the left. With your elbow, ring my doorbell.” “Grandma, that sounds easy, but why am I hitting all these buttons with my elbow?” the grandson asked. “Yes a bottle of sherry will be lovely, thank you dear.”

CAR TROUBLE A chemical engineer, electrical engineer, and a Microsoft engineer are on a road trip. The car breaks down. The electrical engineer looks under the bonnet and can’t find anything wrong. The chemical engineer checks the oil and fuel and can’t find anything wrong. The Microsoft engineer says, “Close all the windows, and try again.”

CLEAR COMMUNICATION In a print design meeting, we were using typical technical jargon to discuss a variable data exchange interface with a customer. One co-worker said the programming we had ordered was delayed because the vendor was suffering from a “severe non-linear waterfowl issue.” Curious, the team leader raised his eyebrows and asked, “What exactly is that?” The programmer replied, “They don’t have all their ducks in a row.”

ARE YOU READING THAT? I was on the subway, sitting on a newspaper when a guy comes over and asks, “Are you reading that?” I didn’t know what to say. So I said, “Yes.” I then stood up, turned the page, and sat down again.

SILENT BUT DEADLY A wife once gave her husband the silent treatment for an entire week. She didn’t say anything; she just put it into practice. She was hoping it would make him be more attentive to her and to their marriage. At the end of the week she decided to bring up subject. “You notice anything different about us this past week?” Without missing a beat, and without having a clue either, he replied. “Yeah, we’re getting along pretty great lately!” What Do You Mean? A bear walks into a cafe and says, “I want a toasted............... cheese sandwich please.” The waiter asks, “What’s with the pause?” The bear replies. “What do you mean, I’m a bear aren’t I?

TAKE TWO AND CALL ME IN THE MORNING A husband walks into the bedroom holding two aspirin and a glass of water. His wife asks, “What’s that for?” “It’s for your headache.” “I don’t have a headache.” He replies, “Gotcha!”

SMILE £££ One day a man walks into a dentist’s office and asks how much it will cost to extract wisdom teeth. “Eighty pounds,” the dentist says. “That’s a ridiculous amount,” the man says. “Isn’t there a cheaper way?” “Well,” the dentist says, “if you don’t use an anesthetic, I can knock it down to £60.” “That’s still too expensive,” the man, says. “Okay,” says the dentist. “If I save on anesthesia and simply rip the teeth out with a pair of pliers, I could get away with charging £20.” “Nope,” moans the man, “it’s still too much.” “Hmm,” says the dentist, scratching his head. “If I let one of my students do it for the experience, I suppose I could charge you just £10.” “Marvellous,” says the man, “book my wife for next Tuesday!”

DESIGNED FOR KIDS TODAY The young mother sceptically examined a new educational toy. “Isn’t it rather complicated for a small boy?” she asked the sales clerk. “It’s designed to adjust the child to live in today’s world, ma’am,” the shop assistant replied. “So basically, any way he tries to put it together is wrong.”

BABY TURTLE A baby turtle was standing at the bottom of a large tree and with a deep sigh, started to climb. About an hour later, he reached a very high branch and walked along to the end. He turned and spread all four flippers and launched himself off the branch. On landing at the bottom in a pile of soft, dead leaves, he shook himself off, walked back to the bottom of the tree and with a sigh started to climb. About an hour later, he again reached the very high branch, walked along, turned, spread his flippers and flung himself off the branch. Again, he landed on the bottom, shook himself off, went to the bottom of the tree, sighed and started climbing. Watching these proceedings from the end of the branch were two birds. The Mummy bird turned to Daddy bird and said, “Don’t you think it’s time we told him he was adopted?

MOTHERLY ADVICE One week before her wedding, a mother pulls aside her daughter (and bride-to-be). She says, “I will now give you the advice that has been passed down from generation to generation, from woman to woman.” The daughter listened attentively, curious as to what the advice would be. The mum continued, “Cook a man a fish and you feed him for a day. But teach a man to fish, and you get rid of him for the whole weekend.”

THE DOG AND THE VIOLIN Little Hope was practicing the violin in the living room while her father was trying to read in the study. The family dog was lying in the study, and as the screeching sounds of little Hope’s violin reached his ears, he began to howl loudly. The father listened to the dog and the violin as long as he could. Then he jumped up and yelled above the noise, “Can’t you play something the dog doesn’t know?”

YANKEE DOODLE ANIMALS Three animals were having a drink in a cafe, when the owner asked for the money. “I’m not paying,” said the duck. “I’ve only got one bill and I’m not breaking it.” “I’ve spent my last buck,” said the deer. “Then the duck will have to pay,” said the skunk. “Getting here cost me my last scent.”

WHAT A NAIL BITER Two older women were fussing about their husbands over tea one day. “I do wish my Dennis would stop biting his nails. That makes me terribly nervous,” the first one said. “Oh, my Brian used to do the same thing,” the other woman commented. “But I broke him of that habit real quick.” “What did you do?” “I hid his teeth.”

I FEEL SICK A man was in a terrible accident, and his “manhood” was mangled and torn from his body. His doctor assured him that modern medicine could give him back his manhood, but that his insurance wouldn’t cover the surgery, since it was considered cosmetic. The doctor said that the cost

would be £3500 for small, £6500 for medium, and £14,000 for large. The man was sure he wanted a large, but the doctor urged him to talk it over with his wife before he made any decision. The man called his wife on the phone and explained their options. The doctor came back into the room, and found the man looking quite dejected. “Well, what have the two of you decided?” asked the doctor. The man answered, “She’d rather have a new kitchen.”

KNITTING ON THE ROAD A police officer saw a woman knitting as she was driving. He could not believe his eyes. He yelled at her to pull over. She rolled down her window and yelled back, “No, it’s a scarf!”

FROM THE HORSE’S MOUTH A jogger running down a country road is startled as a horse yells at him, “Hey, come over here buddy!” The jogger is stunned but runs over to the fence where the horse is standing and asks, “Were you talking to me?” The horse replies, “Sure was, man I’ve got a problem. I won the Epsom Derby a few years ago and this farmer bought me and now all I do is pull a plough and I’m sick of it. Why don’t you run up to the house and offer him £5,000 to buy me. I’ll make you some money as I can still run.” The jogger thought to himself, “Boy, a talking horse!” Pound signs started appearing in his head. So he runs to the house and the old farmer is sitting on the porch. The jogger tells the farmer, “Hey man, I’ll give you £5,000 for that old broken down nag you’ve got in the field.” The farmer replies, “Son, you can’t believe anything that horse says. He’s never even been to Epsom.”

Giving up, he types, “One mongoose, and while you’re at it, send another one.”
