Alltrade Printers invests in second Renz Inline 500 Alltrade Printers, Birmingham, has invested £185,000 in a second Renz Inline 500, high-speed, fully-automatic punching and wire binding line 12 years after its first. The investment will support the company’s broadening services and help it remain competitive in today’s highly pressurised marketplace. “The Renz Inline 500 enables us to say yes,” states Managing Director Dilu Mukadam. “We never want to say no. In this sector of the market, if you do, the customer will look elsewhere and you may never get the opportunity to win that work back.” The second Renz Inline 500, high-speed, fully-automatic punching and wire binding line for books, calendars and skip binding was chosen to support an increasingly flexible work mix and support peak production ensuring fast turnaround times even at the busiest periods. It features simple and fast set up via touch screen assisted setup. The versatile calendar production line capable of producing a wide range of formats includes QSA (Quick Size Adjustment) for high flexibility of different paper formats. There is job memory storage capacity of up to 50 jobs. Alltrade’s system also incorporates the KAS calendar hanger system. It takes straight wire and pre-forms the hanger into a standard or euro hanger profile. Dilu continues: “The calendar season is getting later which results in a bigger workload spike. We needed a system that would support that demand for greater capacity. It is also so flexible that we can use if for the increasing amount of book work we handle outside of the calendar season. That
allows us to better manage the workflow. 60% of our work will now go on both Renz lines.” Since the first system was installed the company has invested in two other solutions from other suppliers but returned to Renz for numerous reasons. “The Renz systems are built to last,” explains Dilu. “They are very robust. It is only when you go to other suppliers you realise how good Renz is. The service from Renz was superb as well. They really looked after us. “We are heading to the crazy 24/7 calendar season where we will be looking to achieve a 72 hour turnaround. The new Renz will allow us to do that. It is also quicker to make-ready which supports highly efficient operation. We expect to
achieve ROI in two a half to three years.” Ease of use it also important: “Our team are familiar with it which makes setting it up easy. They are happy and happy staff are productive staff. Now with both Renz systems we have the capacity to produce 30,000 calendars in a 24hour period.” Iain Bullock, Renz UK Managing Director added: “We have worked with Alltrade for more than 12 years. Their first Renz Inline 500 has produced 20 million calendars to date. It will continue to support the new machine as the business adjusts production capabilities to more flexibly meet the changing needs of the market.” www.renz.co.uk
Strong industry support for apprenticeships The Trailblazer Consortium continues to press its case for an appropriate approach to the new Print Apprenticeship Standards, which will replace the existing Frameworks. The Consortium, which includes the BPIF, Unite the Union, Ryedale Group, Oxuniprint, BCQ Group, CDi Yorkshire, Multi Packaging Solutions, Westferry Printers, Page Bros, De La Rue and The Printing Charity were disappointed with the SFA response in December 2016 that, rather than offering a ‘core plus options’ approach, the standard should be simplified to a ‘one size fits all’ approach. In the Consortium’s view this would have
led to a reduction in the quality of an apprenticeship as an individual would be required to become a generalist across pre-press, press and bindery, rather than their preferred approach, which was to develop a specialism in one area while at the same time having a general understanding of the other areas. A call to the industry for views resulted in a strong response (over
50 entities), all strongly supporting the employer-led consortium’s approach. This industry feedback, strongly indicating the need for high quality employer-led apprenticeships, has been taken into account by the Institute for Apprenticeships (IFA) in reviewing the sector’s needs. The IFA has now given initial feedback that it has listened after meeting with the Consortium’s Chair, James Buffoni of Ryedale Group, and Vice Chair, Ian Wilton of Oxuniprint, and will support the ‘core plus options’ approach. Ursula Daly, Coordinator for the Consortium, commented, “we were really impressed with the
way that the industry and the trade press understood the debate and then provided strong and clear feedback supporting the Trailblazer Consortium. The level of responses went way beyond anything we dared hope for, and it’s helped us communicate a really robust message about the sector’s needs. I can’t overstate how appreciative we are, and the consortium members — who are all dedicating a great deal of time and effort to this — are greatly reassured by the level of support across the industry.” To follow the efforts of the Print Trailblazer Consortium, visit www.britishprint.com/trailblazer

4-Print invests in new digital and litho 4-Print in West Molesey will make its debut in digital printing with the delivery of a Versafire CP press from Heidelberg. At the same time, it is adding a new Suprasetter A75 CtP to feed its two litho presses, a Speedmaster SM74-6 and an SM52-5. “We have been analysing the benefits of an investment in digital for a while, having enjoyed great success with litho. It didn’t take long to establish that there is more work available to us from our existing client base if we can offer this short run service and so we have undertaken extensive research, looking at all the main players,” says Nigel Fountain. “We have come down in favour of Heidelberg because it fits with our Prinect workflow and the 330mm x 700mm banner format is fantastic and will allow us to handle 6pp A4 or landscape A4 work.” He anticipates the breakpoint between litho and digital jobs being around the 500 run point and he believes the Versafire will handle a broad range of the commercial work it handles, from business cards to brochures. Nigel joined the company in 1984, originally as a driver, but it is his extensive experience as a minder which makes him thorough and inciteful when it comes to choosing new technology. He led a management buyout in 2011 and says that the company’s 11 staff have between them 200+ years of service and that they remain a very close and effective team.
The CtP investment is a straight Suprasetter for Suprasetter swap; the one going out is ten years old. There are advantages with the latest version. It has a smaller footprint which leaves space for the Versafire CP and it has both B2 and B3 plate cassettes integrated into the machine where previously the trays were manually changed. 4-print’s client base is extremely broad
across many sectors, primarily in London and the Home Counties. With 50-60 loyal clients it has a safe spread of business and it works long, flexible days and up to seven days a week to meet their needs. It bases its success on “excellent customer service, hard work, knowledge and honesty” as well as regular and well planned investment. www.heidelberg.co.uk
Vivid partner with Color-Logic for foiling software Vivid Laminating Technologies, a designer and manufacturer of digital foiling and laminating systems, has confirmed an exclusive partnership with US-based Color-Logic™. The Color-Logic suite of colour communication systems and software tool sets work in conjunction with Adobe’s Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign applications. They allow designers to work with an exclusive pallet of 250 unique metallic foil colours, all achievable using a digital printer and Vivid’s award-winning Matrix digital foiling and laminating system and its Aqua Aura silver or rainbow holographic foils. Vivid’s Product Manager Lewis Evans explains more “Our new Aqua Aura range of luxury foils are available in over 20 colours. By using the Color-Logic tools, you can now achieve 250 different metallic colours, all from one single roll of foil and with just a click of a button” Color-Logic plug-ins and palettes for the Adobe suite are very easy to work with and
save huge amounts of time. For example, the Photoshop plug-in intelligently analyses the levels of colour within a photo to create an image ready to be foiled, including shadows and lighter areas. The finished effect jumps out of the page and dramatically enhances print. “Color-Logic is a disruptive technology that adds value to print, whilst
differentiating a client’s branding” states Mark Geeves, Color-Logic’s Director of Sales and Marketing. “Vivid’s expertise in foiling, combined with our innovative colour system, creates exciting new opportunities for printers to grow their high-value print production business, whilst reducing overall stock inventory.” Vivid’s exclusive alliance with Color-Logic offers the user two levels of software integration. The standard package includes the full design suite and FX viewer for one user, whereas the premium package allows up to five simultaneous users of the design suite and FX viewer, combined with five Pattern-FX which adds dimensions to the print. “We’re able to offer both packages on either a three or five year lease,” continued Evans. “Combining the lease cost, printers can have access to our award-winning Matrix digital foiling system and ColorLogic’s incredible metallic print effects for around £70 per week”. www.vivid-online.com

Neopost help on the road to postage discounts All businesses are conscious about expenditure. Everyday costs add up and firms soon start seeing that revenue doesn’t quite stretch as far as it used to. With their limited budgets, mounting costs are a real challenge for small businesses; one that can force them into drastic actions, such as reducing staff or moving. However, one everyday activity that is often left unmanaged is postage. Organisations would traditionally stamp individual letters and parcels, before then waiting at the Post Office for them to be processed. This method is a drain on resources and time, but it’s one that many small businesses continue to rely on. Modernising the postage process will reap rewards — Franking machines can help firms unlock big savings from their postage costs, and ones that are Royal Mail Mailmark enabled deliver even greater savings. In fact, users are
able to save as much as 16 percent over the cost of traditional stamps. Folder inserters can also help to reduce costs. Ensuring that outgoing communication is always folded into the most cost-effective dimension, it prevents businesses from sending items in oversized envelopes. When sending high volumes of post, Royal Mail has certain specifications that must be met. One of the criteria is accurate addresses, with items with incorrect information returned and then reissued at an extra cost. This means having up-to-date information is vital. Addressing software ensures data accuracy and assures businesses that their communications are always reaching the intended targets. Try Neopost’s free postage audit — When managed with the right tools, small businesses can greatly reduce the amount they spend
on postage. Mailmark franking machines, folder inserters and addressing software all combine to create an automated and fluid mailing process that delivers big savings over traditional methods. Why not try out the free audit and download Neopost’s “Road to Postage Discounts” guide to discover how your business can unlock postage savings? www.neopost.co.uk/road2017
Second PUR Plus for Belfast’s Northside Graphics Northern Ireland’s digital print business, Northside Graphics Ltd of Belfast, has added further Morgana finishing equipment in order to maintain its speed of delivery of digitally printed work. This latest investment consists of a Morgana DigiBook 200 PUR perfect binding machine — the second such machine for the Roundtower Industrial Estate premises — and a Morgana AutoCreaser Pro 385 creasing machine, the first of the new high-capacity units to be installed in Northern Ireland. The new equipment has been purchased through and installed by Reprocentre NI, the Morgana dealer for Northern Ireland. Commenting on the purchase decision, Richard Campbell, Operations Director at Northside in Belfast, said: “The recent purchase of a second Morgana DigiBook binder and high-capacity AutoCreaser has been made necessary by the huge growth in demand for PUR books from both Northside clients in Northern Ireland and from Northside’ s online business at the www. digitalprinting.co.uk web site. “After working with the first DigiBook 200 for over a year, the purchase of a second machine was, for us, an easy decision and allowed us to keep up with the large growth in our customers’ demand for PUR bound books. We are able to produce any size and page content of book with quantities from 1 to 500 or more. “The second Morgana DigiBook 200 has been purchased to replace an older PUR
binder that had simply not been able to keep up with the quality, speed, and efficient production of the Morgana machine.” Northside already has a number of Morgana AutoCreasers and were about to purchase an additional machine to work alongside the new binder when the local dealer introduced the new Pro 385. “The main benefit of the 385 is that we can crease covers for our PUR books in one pass rather than two thanks to its dual creasing capability, as well as produce other creased products faster than was previously possible. The new AutoCreaser Pro 385 sits with our two PUR binders so that we can quickly and easily crease all the covers for PUR bound books as we need them. The 385 is the first piece of equipment that we have bought without a live demo simply on the strength of our relationship with both
Reprocentre and Morgana. We know and trust their products.” Northside produce a wide range of digital print including leaflets, flyers, folders, labels, invites and booklets. The company currently employ 47 staff at the Belfast plant, providing a recently introduced 24hour production capability. Commenting on the installation, Bill Forde of Reprocentre NI, said: “We are delighted to have been able to assist Northside once again with the post-press equipment needs of the company. Having installed Northern Ireland’s first DigiBook 200 there almost a year ago, the need for a second such unit shows the growth of the customer, as well as their confidence in the equipment provided by Morgana. They now have the first AutoCreaser Pro 385 in Northern Ireland.” www.morgana.co.uk

University of Surrey to revolutionise paper The University of Surrey’s Professor David Frohlich has won £1.17m funding from the Digital Economy programme, to research and develop paper materials that would allow readers to “interact” with printed materials like Harry Potter portraits. The project is called “Next generation paper” and will develop a new form of paper with hyperlinks to the web. Readers will be able to obtain related information on nearby digital devices, just by turning a page or touching the surface of paper documents, photographs, posters or books. This could lead to documents “interacting” with their readers as they impart information — like the fictitious portraits in Harry Potter which are magically able to react to their viewers. These interactive documents, which are a hybrid of “print-and-digital” information, could have links to video clips, animations, sound recordings or music which play at the touch of a printed button. These would appear on TVs, music players, smartphones, tablets and computers, with documents effectively paired with a device using the project technology. People currently scan printed QR codes with a smartphone as an early method of linking paper and digital information. But the project will go beyond this into full document recognition and even instrumentation of the paper itself with electronic sensors and chips. Professor Frohlich, from the Digital World Research Centre, said: “We plan to give physical paper a whole new lease of digital life. Elements of interactive paper have been around in prototype form for some time, but we hope our research will help create a mass market next generation
paper for the 21st century. “The project will create new business opportunities for the digital economy that we will research in parallel with the technology. For example, publishers will be able to add value to print products and services by connecting them to digital material, while web companies will be able to use paper as a tangible interface to online information.” The project will assist in travel and tourism technology where people already read a combination of printed and digital information, by using travel brochures, guide books and leaflets alongside smartphone apps, e-books and TV programmes. However, interactive paper would link up these sources, making it easier to move between them in the reading process. People will also be able to “write” interactive paper materials, like photobooks with associated video clips or sound recordings. These could be assembled as interactive e-books online, and then played back from the printed version. Optical or other sensors would be needed to recognise which page is open and where someone is pointing in order to play the associated media. Many other applications are also possible wherever paper continues to be used alongside digital information. These include printed textbooks linked to online teaching materials, patient records linked to test results, and office documents linked to their electronic versions and associated reference material — all making it easier and faster to get the extra information. www.surrey.ac.uk

Canon expands monochrome print portfolio Canon Europe has launched its new varioPRINT 140 series of production printers, demonstrating a continued commitment to investment and innovation in the monochrome digital print market, and delivering substantial productivity gains compared with previous devices. Building on the product heritage of its predecessor, the varioPRINT 135 series, the new varioPRINT 140 series offers unrivalled uptime and productivity, outstanding monochrome print quality, extended finishing options, all optimised by the introduction of the new Océ PRISMAsync 5 controller. The varioPRINT 140 produces no ozone, underlining its sustainable positioning in the market. The new varioPRINT 140 is capable of printing 143 images per minute in both simplex and duplex modes, making it the fastest printer in the light and mid volume production segments. The printer can deliver monthly print volumes of up to 800,000 copies, more than doubling productivity compared with the varioPRINT 135. Together with the varioPRINT 140, new varioPRINT 130 and varioPRINT 115 models are also being introduced, offering speeds of 133 and 117 A4 images per minute respectively. The introduction of Océ PRISMAsync 5 technology further boosts productivity, using remote printer driver technologies to enable production planning and job scheduling up to eight hours in advance. The remote app is downloadable to a smartphone or personal tablet, and allows operators to focus on other tasks while receiving real-time notifications of upcoming operator actions, such as loading media or adding consumables, or alerts of immediate actions needed. One or multiple PRISMAsync Print Server-driven digital presses can be monitored at a glance, helping expedite manual interventions to increase device uptime and productivity. PRISMAsync 5 offers new impositioning possibilities, such as layout, trim and cover, alongside an embedded JDF/JMF interface. The new controller also enables PSPs and in-house print departments to work more securely, thanks to a configurable user interface which allows for audit logging and back-up and restore capabilities. New features such as page numbering, special book copy functionality and an intuitive copier interface improve usability, particularly in ‘walk-up’ environments. Building on its increased output capabilities to automate the manufacture of most print products, the varioPRINT 140 series offers a full range of in-line finishing options, including stapling, saddle stitching, folding, die punching, inserting, ring binding and high-capacity stacking. The new W1 booklet finisher offers a new saddle stitch option for
flat finished booklets, while the updated F1 booklet trimmer expands customers’ trimming capabilities. A new professional punch is available, offering A4+, A3 and A4 SEF punching in one model, and with the capability to handle heavier media up to 300 gsm. The open Document Finishing Device (DFD) Interface also enables in-line connectivity to specialist, third-party finishing devices. For back-up or walk-up environments, the new printer features a simplified catch tray enabling a simple ‘no finishing’ configuration. The varioPRINT 140 gives users a comfortable work environment, producing no ozone and virtually no waste toner. Energy consumption is reduced using HeatXchange technology, which recycles the heat used to fuse toner onto paper. The low fusing temperature also allows printing on a wide range of media. The varioPRINT 140 builds on the strong product heritage of the varioPRINT 135, which achieved a ‘Five Star’ image quality rating from Buyers Lab (BLI), the global document imaging industry’s resource for unbiased, independent research and data. The new product incorporates the same defining varioPRINT series base technologies, including: Canon DirectPress, which converts digital data into a toner image in a single step, providing a uniform and stable image; Canon ScreenPoint, which automatically converts colour images into grayscale images with excellent resolution; and Canon EnergyLogic, which helps increase productivity by heating up for heavy media or cooling down for light media, providing non-stop production for mixed media jobs. The varioPRINT 140 series is available from early Summer 2017. To book a demonstration contact QPP preferred supplier for Canon www.alternative.uk.com

Swanline Cygnus Gecko New Self-Adhesive A new ‘permanently re-positionable’ self-adhesive vinyl solution has been launched by Swanline Paper & Board (SPB) to offer enhanced flexibility to the display and signage markets. SPB, part of the Swanline Group, says Cygnus Gecko is set to revolutionise the industry’s perception of self-adhesive solutions thanks to the high quality polymeric vinyl that has been specially designed to be easily removed and re-applied multiple times, with no effect on adhesive performance. Ross Griffin, Managing Director at SPB, said: “Unlike other ‘removable’ vinyls, Cygnus Gecko never gains strength and can be removed time and again, leaving no damage to surfaces or any adhesive residue. “This cost-effective solution offers our customers in the sign and display market great flexibility by enabling them to regularly adjust their displays to reflect current promotions and maintain customer engagement. Additionally, the vinyl is available in a choice of matt white or chalkboard finishes to suit the surrounding environment and enhance the overall appearance.” Cygnus Gecko matt white can be used outdoors and is durable for up to two years. The chalkboard finish is intended for indoor use, for restaurant menus for example, and can be written on with traditional
or liquid chalk. The substrate is printable by solvent, eco solvent, UV and HP Latex technologies and has a class 0 fire rating making it ideal for applications in public areas. It can also be over-laminated with a polymeric laminate for further protection or enhancement. To find out more about SPB please visit www.swanline-pb.co.uk

THE PRINT SHOW
NEW WEBSITE AND REGISTRATION OPEN Ahead of the 2017 edition of the event this October, The Print Show has launched a brand-new website and officially opened visitor registration on the backdrop of a rapidly expanding floorplan filled with the biggest names in print.
[D]
ue to take place at the International Centre in Telford from October 11th to 13th, The Print Show 2017 is shaping up to be a record edition of the event, after a host of both new and exhibitors signed up to attend. In recent weeks, organisers have secured the signatures of AMS, Atlantic Tech Services, Quality Print Services, Newtown Tapes, Where The Trade Buys and Precision Printing. The latest sign-ups once again demonstrate how The Print Show is aiming to address all key areas of the UK print market. Quality Print Services specialises in wide-format print solutions including print kit and consumables such as ink, while tapes and packaging expert Newtown Tapes is returning to the show for a third consecutive year. Precision Printing is widely regarded as one of the top print service providers in the UK market, while sister operation Where The Trade Buys offers both digital and litho print services to the market, with a 24-hour turnaround option. Atlantic Tech Services also focuses on the wide-format print area of the market, offering warranty contracts on many of the leading brands, while AMS is one of the UK’s leading suppliers of packaging and mailing equipment. These recent sign-ups now join major brands such as HP, Epson, Xeretec (Xerox), Duplo, Morgana Systems, Grafityp, KBA, B&R Moll, Inktec Europe, Intec and Vivid Laminating Technologies on the floorplan for this year. In further preparation for the forecast record show, organisers have now opted to roll out a brand new website. Developed in partnership with Nettl, the new site features a fresh design, complete with live action videos that help grab visitors’ attention on the home page. The new platform includes all of the previous drop-down menus to help visitors navigate their way around the site and easily access key information such as the expanding exhibitor list, an up-to-date floorplan, the latest news from the show, information about exhibiting, and the extensive programme of special education and entertainment features offered by the exhibition. Chris Davies, event director comments: “We all know that having a strong web presence is critical for businesses of any kind. “Our brand-new website demonstrates our commitment to professionalism and efficiency and we are absolutely delighted with the work done by the Nettl team. “The new site features all the key information you need to know about the show and we will be adding fresh content to the platform on a regular basis, so be sure to keep checking back to see the latest from The Print Show. “One of my favourite features on the new website are the fantastic CGI animations clips on the home page. This is something we haven’t done before but we think they will be a hit.”
The CJI images were designed by Justin Dowling of JD3D – Computer Generated Imagery, and feature the famous CMYK colours of print transforming into famous British icons, including the bulldog, lion and Britannia herself. Nettl, the main driving force behind the new site, will also exhibit at The Print Show this year for the second time, and the company serves as an example of how traditional sign and print firms can diversify outside of their usual remit into areas such as web design. Peter Gunning, chief executive officer of Grafenia plc, the people behind the Nettl network explains: “We’re really pleased to welcome so many new businesses to the Nettl family. We’re proud to bring so many talented and interesting characters together and to grow our businesses together.” Nettl is a bolt-on for graphics businesses. It’s designed for printers, signmakers, and designers who want to do more web for their clients. Gunning continues: “We speak to potential partners all the time. We see the same common problems. Some have tried to do web in the past and got their fingers burnt. Some have hired a web developer, only to see them leave and take the knowledge with them. Others have built successful businesses, but are turning down entry-level web work because they can’t do it costeffectively. And some have got really far on their own, but lack the skills to tackle things that clients want like inventory management, Epos integrations, or e-commerce. “Some people still say to us, ‘you’re a franchise aren’t you?”, the answer is no. No we’re not. We don’t use the ‘f’ word any more. Nettl takes the best bits about being part of a branded network, without having the restrictions. Our partners can keep their identity. They get geographic exclusivity. They use our marketing to sell more web, print and display. They use our software and systems to deliver web projects more quickly. And they use our training to teach them how to do it all, with their existing team. It’s entirely up to them how much they adopt.” Operating under the innovative Grafenia umbrella, website design is one of many online-related services on offer from Nettl, alongside web development, mobile applications and online booking, but the firm is still able to offer more traditional printing services. The company has grown to the point where there are 100 Nettl studios in the UK and plans are in place to add more to this portfolio. www.theprintshow.com

DUPLOFEST
DUPLO PIONEERS PRINT REVOLUTION! Astounding. A print revolution. That was the feedback to Duplo’s Summer Festival, which was music to the ears of organisers who’ve pledged it will be even bigger and better next year.
[A]
fun-filled atmosphere for this unique event, titled a “Celebration of Creativity in Print”, in a real festival-like setting complete with artificial ‘green grass’ brought out 350 people over the two days. But there was also a serious side with real business done. Andy Bird, Bristol Managing Director of Folio Print Finishing, was so impressed by the capabilities of the Duplo 600i Booklet System that he signed on the day with Duplo salesman Jason Davies for a Twin Tower model to complement existing equipment. It will run at speeds of up to 5,200 booklets an hour. “I was blown away by the quality and the speed,” said Andy. “We’ve been looking for additional options and this helps meet the changing demands of customer requirements. I’m delighted to be going for the Duplo 600i Booklet System rather than heavy duty traditional finishing kit. This will really help us.” Duplo’s Addlestone, Surrey-based head office and warehouse was transformed into a festival
field, with a stage, comedy tent, bar and festivalstyle food concessions. Home grown talent from the print industry took to stage over two days with performances by the great and the good from the industry. Duplo’s print finishing systems were decked out in festival colours. Starring was Duplo’s DuSense, a sensory coater that is designed for embellishing short-run digital print with highly creative and intricate special effects, at a fraction of the cost of alternative analogue technologies – that was officially launched at
the festival. “It’s been awesome,” said Peter Jolly — Duplo’s M.D. “This is a print revolution. My vision to create a uniquely different event for our industry went better than even we expected. We were blessed by perfect weather too for this perfect opportunity to celebrate print in the sun while enjoying music from some of the industry’s best talent. And doing real business was the icing on the cake. “Typical comments we got back were along the lines of, ‘amazing event with a surreal atmosphere’, ‘thoroughly creative day’ and a ‘really great gig’.” In the weeks preceding the event, Peter ran 172 kilometres — the distance from Duplo HQ to Glastonbury — to raise money for Addlestone-based Shooting Star Chase, a children’s hospice charity. He is set to hit his four-figure charity sum. www.duplouk.com

PIXEL PROPHET
MAKING A POINT After Martin Christie writing last month’s column, and in the days taken to print the magazine and distribute it, we had the disastrous collapse of British Airways computer system, leaving passengers, baggage and planes grounded all over the world.
[T]
hat my column was about the fragile safety margins offered by a reliance on electronic networks, vulnerable to intentional attack or unforeseen accident, may have seemed like the wisdom of hindsight. But it was entirely coincidental. My main concern centred around outdated software, in a world where anything over a decade old is considered virtually antique, and the bugs and failures to which it might be exposed. Of course, the BA disaster was not caused by a deliberate virus or a software problem as such. In the immediate rush to judgement, there was inevitable speculation about what caused the crisis with much concentration on recent job cuts in the IT departments in this country and the outsourcing of such work to India. A familiar tale when the bean counters are put in charge of something they only understand by its price ticket. The company vehemently denied that this had anything to do with it and later explained, rather limply, that it had simply been a matter of an inexperienced or unauthorised member of staff shutting down a system, followed by a failure to follow correct procedure on restart. Really? Surely that amounts to the same cause — not having staff trained sufficiently to perform essential tasks. Those who know us here at Foulkes Towers will be aware that alongside publishing QPP we run a small, but successful city centre print shop, and have done through the painful transition between analogue and digital over the last decades. So we are well aware of all the potential problems, having faced them in one form or another, at various times. We don’t have anything like the complications of a major international enterprise, but enough to be aware of possible issues. The first person in and the last person out knows the importance of switching all the various devices on and off correctly, and checking for anything out of order. Perhaps in a large corporation, it is easy for that simple accountability to be overlooked — the I didn’t do it syndrome. But that is even more worrying for the potential security of some of our major institutions. When a crisis does arrive, and so called experts come out of the woodwork to try and explain what has happened, it is sobering to hear how little the average pundit understands
about the technology that surrounds us all. The technology that controls us rather than the other way around. They seem genuinely shocked to realise that something like this could happen when any of us that work with computers on a daily basis are more surprised that it doesn’t happen more often. One of the contributing factors to the software problem is the redundancy of older systems, and the inability to update efficient and secure solutions to issues in their basic operating procedure. Processing power and the sheer volume of electronic information has simply overtaken them, and the gap is too large to be easily bridged. While the exponential increase in processing power was predicted decades ago, the implications of that power spreading into every possible device and machine could not have been so easily anticipated. Remember we were talking about a decade when a ‘mobile’ phone was the size and weight of a house brick and the range not much further than you could throw it. Such is progress; battery life seems to have stayed the same though! There is, however, a niggling impression that the software giants do seem to be able to walk
away from their historic liabilities in a way that other manufacturers — like car makers for example — cannot. No chance of Microsoft recalling all the PCs installed with XP as original equipment for new. They just simply cancelled support. Yes, they did offer a free upgrade to Windows 10 for a limited period, and eventually, come up with an emergency patch to block XP’s open wounds. But getting everyone running on the comprehensive control system that is Windows 10 is as much in Microsoft’s interest as that of the user. And one is left with the impression that the software giants are just too big and powerful to be taken to task. A much smaller, but perhaps equally significant spat has occurred within that other internet behemoth Google and has mostly gone unnoticed except in a fairly select bunch of photographers like myself. Nik was a small software company based in San Diego which began to specialise on filters for digital images, specifically plug-in for Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, as well as Apple’s Aperture, which extended the potential of those programs. An offshoot of this was a simple but very successful filter selection for phone images called Snapseed which was very popular and was probably what drew Google’s
Quick Print Pro • Digital Imaging
July-August 2017
attention to Nik. Google bought out Nik in September 2012 and made the photography plug-ins available at a much-reduced price. Existing users, like myself, got a very nice email from Google explaining that as a valued customer already using some of the tools, I could have all of the collection for free, an offer they eventually extended to everyone. I have to say that during this period, back-up support from Google was excellent, including prompt help re-installing the collection after a computer upgrade. In May of this year, however, the bean counters moved in and announced that they had no plans to update the software, meaning that although the filters will continue to work, there is no guarantee they will be compatible with future versions of Photoshop for example, which is of course continually developing as part of the Creative Cloud subscription. Despite a campaign on social media from its many fans, the fear is the writing is on the wall, or rather the monitor, for Nik. One of Nik’s secrets was the development of so-called U-point technology, analysing and comparing individual pixels in an image with control points, to make a more accurate adjustment to colour, texture and exposure than was possible with previous brushes in Photoshop alone. Things move on, and Adobe has reacted by adopting similar features to their controls, or have possibly simply head-hunted Nik talent. It’s not the end of the story though, as several
former Nik development engineers appear to have moved to rival software firm Macphun, originally formed in 2008, and mostly providing service for Mac customers. It was probably no coincidence then that a release of their photo editing package for Windows was announced around the same time Google was closing the hatch down on Nik. Watch this space as we hope to get our hands on a Beta version to evaluate shortly. Despite its all too frequent frustrations, this is an exciting time for digital photography, as we can delve into the very mathematics of an image and make quite subtle changes to its composition. This is important for several reasons. Although digital cameras have improved in quality and performance quite dramatically over recent years, as charted in these columns, they have equally raised just as many issues as the technology has been pushed up to and beyond its limitations. While the cameras, lenses and processors have improved, the standard of photography overall has not, and there is an inverse relationship between the number of people taking pictures, and the quality of output produced. Squeezing lots of tiny sensors into a small device with a miniature lens to give an impressive sounding, but illusory, pixel count, may sell phones but doesn’t create great images for enlarging and printing. And somewhat ironically, at the high end of DSLR cameras, pushing the megapixel quota has revealed other issues including electronic interference, known as noise,
23
and often a failure to establish the expected sharpness or clarity that you would expect from such a large pixel rich file. This is where the development software comes in, and its ability to correct or improve the problems the hardware, for various reasons, cannot solve. It will become possible to save some poor images and perfect better ones. Understanding that, and working with the tools will become an increasing asset for the print shop, as fewer customers, including many photographers, have much understanding of what happens before or after the button has been pressed. Specialist tools like those developed by Nik are really for expert use and often dismissed by those with less knowledge and experience as mere toys. Knowing how to use them is the skill. Fortunately, it looks like all of that development will not be lost, and rather will continue in a different guise. No doubt future Photoshop updates will see similar features creeping into the toolbox. Certainly, the future of digital imaging will see no shortage of issues, so it’s good to see there are likely to be no shortage of cures. As we say, miracles just take a little longer… Incidentally, Nik software is still available from Google free of charge, so can continue to be used until it reaches its sell-by date. Until then, it’s worth the effort of exploring its features as they are likely to become standard parts of future programs in one form or another. www.google.com/nikcollection/
About Nik software
The Nik software bundle comes with several useful filter galleries. Installed as a plug-in for Photoshop or Lightroom they open a separate image window, which has a before and after option allowing you to compare changes to the overall image, and to a particular section of if. The software is non-destructive in that it does not alter the original file but creates, in Photoshop, an additional layer on top of it containing the adjustments. This adjusted filter layer can be further tuned by then using Photoshop’s controls. In Lightroom, an additional copy is created. The most comprehensive filter is Color Efx Pro, which has a large selection of preset actions, all of which can be finely tuned as seen in the control box on the right, and saved as an action to repeat to other similar files. Dfine and Sharpener Pro are useful, as the former can dramatically reduce noise in images taken in low light, and the latter can increase the apparent sharpness of a picture not entirely in focus.

The other filters are for more specific black and white photographic tasks, or for applying dynamic range and high contrast for dramatic effect.

Step on it! New SpotOn Floor 200 printable film Drytac, a manufacturer of self-adhesive materials for the print, label and industrial markets, has announced SpotOn® Floor 200, a new film for floor advertising graphics. The latest introduction to Drytac’s product line is 8mm (200µ) embossed printable white matte monomeric PVC film for shortterm, indoor floor graphics applications. Thanks to a unique dot pattern printed pressure-sensitive polyacrylate adhesive, the new film can be applied to multiple flooring surfaces including floor or ceramic tiles, sealed wood or concrete, waxed vinyl, marble, terrazzo surfaces, and more. It also boasts a post-printed anti-slip rating of R10 (according to DIN 51130:2010), which allows for vibrant, slip-resistant floor graphics without the need for over-lamination. Steve Broad, Sales Director for Drytac Europe, comments: “SpotOn® Floor 200 has been specifically developed for ease of use and is perfect for short-term indoor applications. It is cost effective, simple to print and apply, and can be quickly and cleanly removed. “Crucially, thanks to its impressive, post-printed R10 slip-rating, SpotOn® Floor 200 doesn’t need to be over laminated, which really helps to keep down the cost of production. Some anti-scuff laminates on the market can’t even achieve this rating, so we are extremely pleased with how the film performs. With SpotOn adhesive on the back, I personally think we have a winning combination for all short-term printed indoor graphics applications.” Drytac’s entire range of films and adhesives is exclusively distributed throughout the UK by Antalis. For the most up-to-date pricing and availability, please visit www.antalis.co.uk. For further information on Drytac and its leading range of films and adhesives, please visit www.drytac.co.uk

Vivid multi-layered gluing system
Our thanks to Steve White and his magnificent team at One Digital for making room and time to test the new Vivid multi-layered Easycoat gluing system with the easyguide media alignment tray. Yes, this is proving to stack up new profit for us quick print pros. Cut out the traditional hand rolling, as this solution makes multi-coloured layered thick media easy to layer up. Print, Pouch, Profit Do you look at others peoples’ work and wonder how the customer can be satisfied? We have just this week seen A3 posters and menus that were so creased you had to squint to read them. OK we are guilty of being print anoraks and yes Maureen does check out the printing in a restaurant before reading a menu, but how do some people get away with such poor presentation. Maybe they are home made or produced too fast to stick or too hot to be smooth. Another practice to avoid is interrupting your LFP laminating with small sheet sized print you then have to cut to size. What we need is a quality, speedy pouch machine to make size ready protected print products. With the reliability of Renz for everything we punch and bind in our own shop, the new range of Renz Lamigo Professional pouch laminators is booked into our busy print environment for a summer test drive, reporting back to you shortly…

SOMETHING TO SHARE…? Marriage joke
Wife: “Why don’t you tell your friend that the girl he is getting married to is not apt for him?” Husband: “Leave it. I am not going to say anything.” Wife: “Why not? After all, he is your friend!” Husband: “He didn’t tell me anything when I was getting married.”
Sorry, can you say that again?
A wife complained, “You never listen to me. You only hear what you want to hear...” The husband replied, “Sure honey, I’ll have a beer.”
In tents
John went with a bunch of friends on a camping trip for the weekend. “How was the camping trip?” asked a co-worker a few days later. John replied, “It was intense!”
This could be love
I met a Russian dentist and his name was Anesthesia. I thought this could be love. Sadly, I felt nothing.
Call it a night
My wife and I have very different body clocks. At sundown she is practically ready for bed. I, meanwhile, am a night owl. Recently, after a long, hard workday, I announced around 8pm that I was exhausted and ready to hit the sack. Suddenly my wife nearly leapt into my arms. “Oh, honey,” she purred into my ear, “I just love it when you talk early to me.”
Doing nothing
Wife: What are you doing doing? Me: Nothing. Wife: You did that yesterday. Me: I wasn’t finished.
A bite on my neck
Patient: Doctor, I think I’ve been bitten by a vampire. Doctor: Drink this water. Patient: Will this make me feel better? Doctor: No, but I’ll be able to see the leaks and know where the vampire bit you.
Please advise
School teacher sends home a note with student. The note reads, ”Your son is an obedient and bright student, but spends too much time talking to girls.” Mother sends a note back the following day, ”Please advise a solution. Father has the same problem.”
What a dog
A guy walks into a restaurant with a small dog. The waiter says, “Sir, I’m very sorry, but we don’t allow dogs in here.” The guy replies, “But this isn’t just any dog... this dog can play the piano!” The waiter responds, “Well, if he can play that piano, you both can stay and have a meal on the house!” So the guy sits the dog on the piano stool, and the dog starts playing. Ragtime, Mozart... and the waiter and patrons are enjoying the music. Suddenly a bigger dog runs in, grabs the small dog by the scruff of the neck, and drags him out. The waiter asks the guy, “What was that all about?” The guy says, “Oh, that was his mother. She wanted him to be a doctor.”
Grandmother approved
Even with a thousand games, dolls and crafts to choose from, my customer at the toy shop still couldn’t find a thing for her grandson. “Maybe a video or something educational?” I asked. “No, that’s not it,” she said. We wandered the aisles until something caught her eye, a laser gun with flashing lights and 15 different high-pitched sounds. “This is perfect,” she said, beaming. “My daughter-in-law will hate it.”
Quite a Crowd
I’m always here for you
Complete vs Finish
Good sense
Feared meeting
I was on my way out of the house to meet with a cantankerous client, and I was dreading it. The look on my face must have given me away because my four-year-old daughter asked what was wrong. “I’m going to meet a woman who always yells at Daddy,” I told her. “Oh,” she said. “Say hi to Mummy for me.”
Top ten reasons why dogs are better pets than cats
Before my daughter went on her first date, I gave her “the talk.” “Sometimes, it’s easy to get carried away when you’re with a boy,” I said. “Remember, a short moment of indiscretion could ruin your life.” “Don’t worry,” she said. “I don’t plan on ruining my life until I get married.”
What’s a Tupperware party?
What do you call a country where everyone has to drive a pink car? A Pink Car-nation! Wife: What is the difference between complete and finish? Husband: When you met me, you were complete. When I met you, I was finished.”
A Frenchman walks into a bar with a parrot on his shoulder. The bird is wearing a baseball cap. The bartender says, “Hey, that’s neat. Where did you get that?” The parrot says, “France, they’ve got millions of them there.”
1. Dogs will tilt their heads and try to understand every word you say. Cats will ignore you and take a nap. 2. Cats look silly on a leash. 3. When you come home from work, your dog will be happy and lick your face. Cats will still be mad at you for leaving in the first place. 4. Dogs will give you unconditional love until the day they die. Cats will make you pay for every mistake you’ve ever made since the day you were born. 5. A dog knows when you’re sad. And he’ll try to comfort you. Cats don’t care how you feel, as long as you remember where the can opener is. 6. Dogs will bring you your slippers. Cats will drop a dead mouse in your slippers. 7. When you take them for a ride, dogs will sit on the seat next to you. Cats have to have their own private basket, or they won’t go at all. 8. Dogs will come when you call them. And they’ll be happy. Cats will have someone take a message and get back to you. 9. Dogs will play fetch with you all day long. The only thing cats will play with all day long are small rodents or bugs, preferably ones that look like they’re in pain. 10. Dogs will wake you up if the house is on fire. Cats will quietly sneak out the back door.
One evening after dinner, my fiveyear-old son Brian noticed that his mother had gone out. In answer to his questions, I told him, “Mummy is at a Tupperware party.” This explanation satisfied him for only a moment. Puzzled, he asked, “What’s a Tupperware party, Dad?” I’ve always given my son honest answers, so I figured a simple explanation would be the best approach. “Well, Brian,” I said, “at a Tupperware party, a bunch of ladies sit around and sell plastic bowls to each other.” Brian nodded, indicating that he understood. Then he burst into laughter. “Come on, Dad,” he said. “What is it really?”
Country of pink cars
A Frenchman and his parrot
Two nuns, a penguin, a salesman with a parrot on his shoulder, and a giraffe walk into a bar. The bartender says, “What is this? Some kind of joke?”
A homeowner phones a plumber, “Can you come over and fix my kitchen sink again?” The plumber replied, “You know I’m always at your disposal.”

Scary undertaker tale
A man was walking home alone late one night when he hears a BUMP... BUMP... BUMP behind him. Walking faster he looks back, and makes out the image of an upright casket banging its way down the middle of the street towards him... BUMP... BUMP... BUMP. Terrified, the man begins to run towards his home, the casket bouncing quickly behind… faster... faster... BUMP... BUMP... BUMP. He runs up to his door, fumbles with his keys, opens the door, rushes in, slams and locks the door behind him. However, the casket crashes through his door, with its lid clapping... clappity-BUMP... clappityBUMP... clappity-BUMP on the heels of the terrified man. Rushing upstairs to the bathroom, the man locks himself in. His heart is pounding, his head is reeling, his breath is coming in sobbing gasps. With a loud CRASH the casket breaks down the door, bumping and clapping towards him. The man screams and reaches for something, anything, but all he can find is a box of cough drops!! Desperate, he throws the cough drops at the casket... and of course... the coffin stops.
Wi-Fi Password
Johnny’s Father asked for the password to our Wi-Fi. “It’s taped under the modem,” I told him. After three failed attempts to log on, he asked, “Am I spelling this right? T-A-P-E-D-U-N-D-E-R-T-HE-M-O-D-E-M

The password is
I was in a couple’s home trying to fix their Internet connection. The husband called out to his wife in the other room for the computer password. “Start with a capital S, then 123,” she shouted back. We tried S123 several times, but it didn’t work. So we called the wife in. As she input the password, she muttered, “I really don’t know what’s so difficult about typing Start123.”
Who is that?
A young boy was looking through some old family photos and asked his mother, “Who is the guy on the beach with you, with all the muscles and curly hair?” “That’s your father.” “Then who’s that man who lives with us now?”
