COMPASS BUSINESS FINANCE RECOVERY LOAN SCHEME

Compass Business Finance has been accredited by the British Business Bank to offer the Recovery Loan Scheme (RLS) enabling them to further support businesses as they recover and grow, following the effects of the pandemic. The scheme is designed to help businesses affected by Covid-19 access funding for managing cashflow, investment, and growth, as well as, to improve the funding terms on offer. However, if a commercial loan or funding on better terms is available, without requiring the guarantee provided by the RLS, that will be offered. Offering a number of similar features to the earlier Covid-19 schemes, the RLS also includes other

benefits, for example, the cap on borrowing has been extended from £5million to £10million per borrower with the amount per group increased to £30million. Whilst the lower limit for asset and invoice finance has been reduced to £1,000, and £25,001 for term loans. Businesses who have taken out a CBILS, CLBILS or BBLS facility are able to access the new scheme, subject to affordability. Jamie Nelson, director of Compass Business Finance, stated that, “Our accreditation under the Recovery Loan Scheme will enable us to provide more businesses with the funding they need to move forward, whether we’re helping them

restructure existing debts or providing the funding for much needed investments. “We are now better positioned to assist both larger groups of companies who previously only had access to CLBILS and those smaller companies who took Bounce Backs Loans but would benefit from further support.” Compass Business Finance has a long standing relationship with the British Business Bank, having previously worked with them to increase the availability of finance to smaller UK businesses, through Regional Growth Funds, the Enterprise Finance Guarantee, and the Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme. The Recovery Loan Scheme is scheduled to run until 31st December 2021; however, this will be subject to review. Visit www.compassbusinessfinance.co.uk/ recovery-loan-scheme

ROUTE 1 PRINT UNVEIL NEW ROUTE TO AUTOMATED PRINT South Yorkshire printers, Route 1 Print, launch new API for automated print buying opportunities, saving clients time and money through integration. The ethos at Route 1 Print has always been to make the lives of their clients as easy as possible. As a trade only supplier, they pride themselves on offering a service that is tailored to the unique needs of print buyers Route 1 Print are now excited to launch their latest innovation; an Application Programming Interface (API) designed to streamline the print buying process and help clients to save money at the same time. The API allows clients to link their website or order management system directly to the Route 1 Print factory. In other words, clients will no longer have to spend time transferring order details from their MIS to the Route 1 Print website — specifications will be transferred automatically and the production team can get to work immediately. Automated print buying brings many benefits to regular print buyers, not least being the time saved on duplicating job specifications. Clients will save money on transactional costs per order and can be sure that they will always get the best price thanks to the automatic pricing updates that come with the API. It also means print buyers can offer shorter turnaround times because their orders are entering the production workflow sooner. All these benefits mean that print buyers will spend less energy on administrational tasks, leaving more space to grow their business. “The API has been a huge help to our business growth,” says a High-Profile Print Procurement Business, one of Route 1 Print’s initial API clients. “We would not have been able to handle such large order numbers without automation and this means we still get the Route 1 Print service. Having worked with Route 1 Print for a couple of years now, we can trust that they will give us the quality we need.” Route 1 Print has been developing their API for some time now, creating bespoke solutions for select clients. Having successfully migrated a number of

clients to this system, they are proud to finally offer it to a wider audience. Clients can now access all the information they need from the Route 1 Print website. Sarah Kilcoyne-Guilliam, who has been at the centre of this development from the beginning, says, “We’re thrilled to bring more integration into our buying process. Automated solutions can give so much back to our clients and we anticipate a big shift towards this way of buying in the future. Our API will help clients to focus on what really matters to them.” www.route1print.co.uk

HOLLYWOOD MONSTER CHAIRMAN RECEIVES MBE Hollywood Monster Chairman Tim Andrews has been recognised by the Queen’s Birthday Honours list with an MBE. In a year of a pandemic when the third sector has needed to work harder than ever before to keep services running and funds coming in, the co-founder of LoveBrum has been recognised for ‘services to charity and the community in Birmingham’. The proud Brummie said, “This absolutely has been a great surprise and a huge honour and I’m bursting with pride at having been recognised by the Queen on this year’s Birthday Honours List.” ‘I am truly honoured to have been made an MBE and I share this special moment with my family and close friends. LoveBrum was founded on the basis of being a force for good for Birmingham so without the city’s incredible community our achievements wouldn’t be possible. Many individuals have personally helped me along the way and I’d like to dedicate this honour to the people of Birmingham who have shown incredible resilience and togetherness during unprecedented times. I am proud to be a Brummie.” Tim’s dedication and pride in the City inspired him to co-found and chair the local charity LoveBrum, with the sole aim to increase civic pride by unearthing local projects that make the city a better place. Tim has raised in excess of £750k for local causes by organising and hosting a number of charity events, and has picked up a number of accolades including a Points of Light award from the Prime Minister, CEO of the year at Downtown in Business, Local Hero of the Year from Birmingham Mail, CSR award from The Business Desk, Brummie of the Year at Birmingham Awards and West Midlands regional IOD Director of the Year. Tim says, “I would also like to dedicate this award to my late father John Andrews. We started Hollywood Monster together in our loft space and none of this would have happened without his support and confidence in me and it’s such a shame he is not here for him to share this.” Co-founded by Tim and PJ Ellis, LoveBrum supporters vote on live projects and everyone has a say in which projects are supported, meaning all funds

raised help to boost the local charitable economy and the best part is, every penny raised from individual memberships and fundraising goes straight to the causes. Tim has forged a successful career and business in Birmingham as Chairman of Hollywood Monster, a graphics firm that has become one of the largest in its sector, with 70 employees and a £10m turnover with min blue chip companies. Tim added, “The nightmare of the pandemic has seen the business, and our target sectors, deplete over the years but our team has remained dedicated to providing the best possible quality and service for each and every client.” Looking to the future, Tim hopes to continue supporting causes he loves – especially Brummie ones! www.hollywoodmonster.co.uk

ASL GROUP SUPPORTS SPECTRUM GRAPHICS ASL Group, one of Canon’s largest and fastest growing partners has helped its customer, Spectrum Graphics, strengthen its offering through the purchase of a Canon imagePRESS C9010VP. Spectrum Graphics, a family run design and printing service based in Erith, Kent, was established in 1998 and offers a wide variety of print products in almost every print sector. It approached ASL Group in early 2020 looking to purchase a new device that would allow it to broaden its product offering and strengthen its quality of output. The business had worked with multiple print providers in recent years; however, it was experiencing difficulties with its existing product range and the service it was receiving from suppliers. ASL Group worked with Spectrum Graphics to better understand its requirements, existing challenges, and future goals. Offering a consultative approach is a key part of ASL Group’s offering, and after exploring products from various manufacturers it was clear – for both businesses – that the Canon imagePRESS C9010VP was the perfect fit. Spectrum Graphics purchased the Canon imagePRESS C9010VP, which boasts impressive colour, performance, and consistency. The device is capable of printing on heavier stocks as

standard (up to 400gsm), as well as on a range of textured and creative media. Its functionality includes MULTI D.A.T. for ultimate image quality, and a Dual Fixing unit for full productivity on different media types. The purchase will help Spectrum Graphics grow into new markets, as it can now offer its customers a wider range of outstanding quality products with an extremely high level of consistency. Thanks to improved efficiencies, the device will also support Spectrum Graphics in making long term financial savings. David Norris, Partner, Spectrum Graphics, commented: “The service we’ve received from Canon and ASL Group has been outstanding, with any issues or questions being resolved quickly and professionally. We’ve also been incredibly impressed with the print quality of the imagePRESS C9010VP, and we can now offer our

customers quick and reliable turnaround times and the highest quality output.” Will Doherty, Commercial & Industrial Printing Systems Director, ASL Group, commented: “We’re delighted we’ve been able to support Spectrum Graphics on its journey, helping the business identify a Canon product that uniquely fits its business needs. We pride ourselves on our consultative approach and hope that the new device will open up exciting opportunities in the future.” ASL Group is a supplier to the production print market for graphic arts, corporate and public sector print rooms offering print, IT and communication infrastructure to over 7,000 customers across nine UK sites. 0345 304 3604 • will.doherty@asl-group.co.uk • www.asl-group.co.uk

FLEXPRESS INSTALLS HORIZON BQ-500 PERFECT BINDER Flexpress, Leicester, has chosen to manage an increase in book printing orders with one of the first Horizon BQ-500 perfect binders in the UK. Explains Steve Wenlock, Managing Director: “Book printing demand has been growing and we felt our existing equipment was struggling to cope, particularly at times of peak demand.” It was the reputation of Horizon systems that was instrumental in the decision to buy. States Steve: “The Horizon BQ-470 and Horizon BQ-480 PUR have always had excellent reputations so the opportunity to install the latest variation was too good to miss. Plus, our experience of Horizon equipment, such as our StitchLiner MK III, has always been very positive.” He continues: “Apart from the fact it’s considerably quicker than the machine it replaced, we liked the fact the BQ-500 has the ability to add extra functionality, such as end paper feeders for case bound books, as our need demands. “We didn’t look at any other alternatives because we are familiar with and have confidence in Horizon binders. We knew it would meet our needs, so didn’t feel we needed to consider anything else. As for the impact it is making Steve states: “Basically, we can get more production from the

6

same amount of time which enables us to take on jobs we’d have struggled with previously. We’re not chasing different markets. Our existing trade market has plenty of opportunity and relies on us to provide quality products reliably and cost effectively. This installation means we’ll simply be able to do this on a slightly bigger scale.” He adds: “The full return on investment won’t be fully known until our plans to expand capabilities in other areas of the business are realised. We are, though, anticipating it will be a significant component in a strategy that will see us double in size over the next few years. Also crucial was the relationship Flexpress has with IFS. Says Steve “We’ve worked with IFS for many years and can’t foresee this changing. We trust the team implicitly and having been lucky enough to visit the Horizon factory in Japan, know they have a strong partnership with one of the world’s most respected brands of finishing equipment. Why wouldn’t we love that?” The new Horizon BQ-500 four clamp perfect binder builds on the successful tried and trusted features of its BQ-470 and BQ-480 predecessors. Its enhanced functionality includes smoother faster more highly automated set up via a large 12.1 inch colour touchscreen, 21 automated sections

from cycle and milling speed to roller height and guide positioning, memory storage of up to 999 jobs, pre-installed variable software capability and variable thickness production of 5mm up to 800bph. It also incorporates a number of new design features that aid easy operation. They include a status light that indicates, at a distance, how the binder is running, and an ergonomic design where all the operator required actions are on the same side. It is pre-installed with Horizon’s cloud based iCE LiNK workflow that provides access to an intuitive easy to use dashboard that reports real time production analysis for improved efficiency and profitability, remote update capabilities and scheduled maintenance resulting in less downtime. The latest investment joins a Horizon StitchLiner MKIII, a Horizon BQ-280 PUR single clamp perfect binder, a Horizon HT-30C three sided trimmer, a Horizon CRF 362 creaser folder and a Horizon AFC-566 folder. www.ifsl.uk.com

MORGANA LAUNCH DIGIFOLD PRO XL The DigiFold Pro XL is the latest addition to the Morgana DigiFold family. The machine is developed from the well proven Morgana DigiFold Pro and is equipped with the latest version of the patented DynaCrease creasing system. The unit incorporates a suction feeder that handles stock sizes from 210mm to 1,300mm in length. The heavy duty automatic creasing and folding system is designed to complement mid to high volume digital and offset production presses. Morgana DigiFold Pro XL fits perfectly with the long sheet capabilities of today’s production printers by featuring a pull out extension that handles sheet sizes up to 1,300mm as standard. This opens the door to new applications, such as landscape booklet covers, book covers for oversized perfect bound books, multi-panel brochures, and the many other applications made possible by long sheet presses. The DigiFold Pro XL is equipped with the latest version of Morgana’s DynaCrease, where the creasing blades can now be easily changed without the use of tools. An additional Static Crease option can be installed to enable different crease profiles to be applied in one pass, commonly used in the production of “hinge and spine” creases in book covers. Changing the Static Crease blade for a perforation tool will provide the full range of crease and perforation options, such as tear out coupons and reply cards. Morgana’s DigiFold Pro XL can fold up to 6,000 A4 sheets per hour, and in crease only mode it can produce up to 7,500 sheets per hour. The unit has a maximum loading capacity of 200mm. The top fed vacuum feeder ensures stable production for long runs. Morgana’s user friendly operator panel allows for the simple input of sheet size, media type, and thickness. With this information the Pro XL can automatically set the speed, roller gap, and fan settings. A unique air knife system is used for sheet separation. Full cross perforation is available, plus up to five inline perforation/scoring wheels. The unit can produce up to 30 creases per sheet (Static Crease). It is equipped with both a belt stacker for folded sheets and a delivery tray for crease only jobs. The loading and unloading areas are an open design to make it easy to monitor performance and make changing from job to job fast and efficient. The

new open feeder design is capable of efficiently feeding a wide range of media types and weights. It is equipped with automated vacuum feed technology, specifically designed to handle the widest range of pre-printed media. Commenting on this latest addition to the Morgana range, Ray Hillhouse, VP Sales & Marketing said: “The Pro XL is an important addition because of its wide stock range. We work closely with the print engine manufacturers on several levels. All of them were pushing into longer sheet applications with their latest print engines. As well as opening up a new range of possibilities, we’ve made the DigiFold easier to operate and automated much of the feeder set-up with our new vacuum feeder.” The DigiFold XL is available in the UK and Europe now, with shipments to North America beginning in the summer. www.morgana.co.uk

The new versatile printer offers the same high productivity features, output quality and media versatility of its bigger brother, the Colorado 1650. Using Canon’s unique UVgel 460 inks that are used with the Colorado 1650, the 1630 produces razor sharp prints with a wide colour gamut. Extremely reliable and easy to use, this robust workhorse is built for maximum uptime and quick turnarounds. Operating costs are also minimised thanks to the efficiency of the printer, combined with reduced waste and a 40% lower ink consumption compared to other technologies, so customers can maximise their bottom line and, in turn, expand their business. Users can benefit from uninterrupted production with on the fly ink replenishment which, combined with unprecedented automation features such as nozzle monitoring, printhead maintenance and media feed winding, allows users to avoid unnecessary downtime. In addition, Canon’s Remote Control app is now available to monitor all Colorado printers. This will allow users to check the printer status remotely which helps to use this device unattended 24/7. The Remote Control app sends alerts to the users’ mobile devices with printer status updates, warnings and errors, offering the reassurance that the printer is running smoothly to meet deadlines. Colorado users can also benefit from Canon’s ProCare after sales service programme, which offers maximised uptime through access to spare parts, preventive maintenance and remote support for increased productivity and minimal downtime.

MODULAR OPTIONS FOR INDIVIDUAL NEEDS

The modular architecture of the Colorado 1630 allows customers to start with the base model and, depending on business needs, choose from a range of additional modules. For example, if

12

the printer is installed with one media roll but run lengths are increasing, a second media roll option can be easily added. Further enhancing its efficiency, the precise media handling of the Colorado 1630 ensures near perfect registration for double sided printing. A ‘print side in’ option also allows customers to print on both the inside and outside of the roll for maximum media versatility. All options can be enabled remotely and on demand, without the need for a service visit. Adding flexibility for a matte or gloss finish to each print, the optional FLXfinish module uses a unique LED curing technique designed to add visual impact to applications such as banners, wall coverings and point of sale materials without the need to change inks or media. This technology also supports printing on porous substrates, such as uncoated papers and soft signage materials, further expanding new market opportunities.

THE EXTENDED COLORADO FAMILY The introduction of the Colorado 1630 comes as an extension of the existing family of UVgel roll to roll printers. In addition to the 1630, the product portfolio includes the Colorado 1640/1650 for customers with higher volumes and the UVgel Wallpaper Factory which offers an end to end automated high volume wallpaper production solution. Michele Tuscano, Head of Global Partner Channel & Vice President EMEA - Large Format Graphics at Canon Production Printing, comments, “Since launching the Colorado series in 2017, the technology has truly disrupted the market and, with over 2,000 installations worldwide printing more than 25 million square metres to date, feedback has been extremely positive. Enabling our

Michele Tuscano

customers and partners to expand their application possibilities and grow their business is an essential driver for us at Canon Production Printing and increasingly we’ve seen a demand for a 1.6 m UVgel printer that can serve all PSPs. That’s why we’re introducing this new addition of the 1630 to the Colorado printer family, so customers can benefit from a highly automated, robust and stable printer with a modular architecture that offers a great deal of flexibility at an attractive investment level.” The Colorado 1630 is available immediately via accredited partners as well as Canon’s sales teams. PRINT IS THE PERFORMANCE

Martin Christie has always felt that, as a profession, printers get pretty poor coverage in popular media. After all, when television channels anxious to fill available viewing hours with content have made personalities of sewer workers and ticket collectors, and a blocked drain can be a major drama, it seems any daily event can be raised to be the subject of compulsive viewing.

O

ccupations that involve real drama involving life and death, like doctors, police and even vets, are understandable as high profile. Still, when baking cakes and sewing become headline features, you have to wonder where the list will end. I suppose food is an obvious candidate because we all consume it. However, there is a certain irony in the fascination of its preparation when so many people seemed to be obsessed with the delivery of fast, precooked cuisine, to the extent that thousands could probably survive without a kitchen at all. Of course, we all need print at some time or other in our lives, whether it’s the basics of birth, marriage and death. Despite the rise of digital technology, paper still plays a significant part in transmitting facts and figures. It will continue to do so as it is the only medium with proven longevity over centuries, apart from things literally carved in stone. The printed word has played a more decisive part in history than most battles, which is why those in power have often tried so hard to suppress it, but while books and pamphlets can burn, it’s a lot harder to track them all down than today — flick a switch to close down the internet. When photographs could be printed in more recent times, they have equally had an impact and a lifespan which flicking through transient images on a small screen can never challenge. For over a century now, those images have not only captured history but often changed it for good or ill. Surprising then it has taken so long for photography to join the list of TV challenges, as the BBC has recruited celebrity photographer Rankin (he does have a first name; it’s John) to host a series with a number of keen amateurhope-to be-professionals. I usually cringe at the portrayal of photographers on the screen, generally playing the expected cliches, clicking away randomly and full of crass remarks. So I was reluctant to rush to watch the series initially, but now, in the interest of balance, I’m catching up one by one online and so far favourably inclined. Through digital technology, photography has become something everybody does, and almost on a daily basis. Previously the camera would only be dragged out for the special occasion, 14

Christmas or a holiday, and the day-to-day snapping would be left to the professional and the enthusiast. Instead, they learned to do it properly through trial and error. If you only held a camera a couple of times a year, it was tough to learn because the device didn’t give you much help. You only got to see results when the prints came out, and even then, it would be hard to work out what you’d done wrong unless you’d obviously chopped someone’s head off! Now you can see what you are doing; it’s a lot easier to get it, if not exactly right, merely acceptable. But actually, because of that, it is much more likely to result in a whole series of very average images, none of which are perfect but are never given a really critical review, so they will do. And that is the theme of Rankin’s series so far as I have seen, taking photographers who are mostly self-taught and reasonably competent at some level and making them more critical of what they are doing in terms of subject and composition, as well as eventually more professional and commercial. Hopefully, a lot of the new generation of photographers, empowered by digital cameras and phones, will take note. It’s a lot easier to taste a poor dish than judge a bad photograph. I have often said that modern cameras are so good that it is very easy for anyone to take

a great photo — once. The difference is that a professional has to do it every time, in any circumstances, or go hungry; at least, that’s the general theory. I don’t know if Rankin will go on to feature printing in future episodes, but it is very much a part of the judgement of a truly great photograph. There’s no hiding imperfections in hard print. They may not show on the small screen, but when those pixels hit the paper, the truth is revealed for all to see. In browsing other photographers for research for this column, I came across an interesting quote from American landscape expert Ansel Adams which, to be honest, I had never heard before. “The negative is the score, and the print is the performance.” I had to do a double-take to get the sense, but he uses the word score in its musical sense rather than a football analogy. The notes on paper are simply symbols until the orchestra brings them to life. It struck me as particularly apt in present digital terms as despite what many people seem to believe, the displayed images are not strictly real but projections of mathematical numbers. You have to grasp that to understand why so many things can go wrong in the complicated digital daisy chain to make them real and why some things, particularly colours, are not always what they seem. It is the daily challenge at the counter with print on demand, explaining why some things JULY-AUGUST 2021• QUICK PRINT PRO

A hexadecimal color value is a six-digit code preceded by a # sign; it defines a color that is used in a website or a computer program.

that look perfect on screen just cannot be reproduced in print — at least not in the time scale and price range, the customer expects. In recent columns, I have compared the different characteristics of RGB and CMYK, between projected colour and printed reflective colour, and the problems encountered getting one as close to the other as possible. Interestingly, as customers are an endless source of inspiration for me, a new request came in recently. You get used to designers producing a Pantone reference to match the colours on their website, but this one produced a Hex number. If you haven’t spotted it before, it’s hiding in the bottom box of Photoshop’s colour picker below LAB and the other usual suspects. Hex is a sort of simplified code used mainly for web colours, and as such, it’s not a bad reference for matching the hue the customer expects. There are even handy online colour charts so they can choose and see the result slight variations can make. In this case, the Hex code turned out to be a nearperfect 100% magenta print, and the customer never needed to know the difference between additive and subtractive process. So you do learn something new every day.

GET READY FOR WINDOWS 11!

You may not be familiar with the eighties spoof rock documentary This is Spinal Tap, but one of the many epic heavy metal cameos is the guitarist boasting that his stage amp volume control ‘goes up to eleven’ instead of the normal ten, so it’s got to be better, right? It was a statement that in the technological world, numbers would count as much as quality. I couldn’t help remembering it when I heard about the release of Microsoft’s latest incarnation, Windows 11, coming soon to a computer need you. Microsoft has had a few issues with numbers in the past, missing out on a few in sequence to disguise a few embarrassing failures. Many of you reading this will be far too young to remember any of those, but suffice it to say that when this column started, we worked with Windows 98, relating to the year it was introduced, not the version. Subsequent versions of the operating system trialled various names to make them sound more modern and less dated, but it looks like they are sticking to numbers, at least for the next two. One of the reasons for software upgrades is QUICK PRINT PRO • JULY-AUGUST 2021

to sort out bugs and general glitches that only get uncovered in long term use and combat possible security threats from those who are also developing software. But it also enables Microsoft to introduce more features that are just as useful for them as they are intended to be for you. A brief review reveals more applications to keep you exclusively in the Windows family. Businesses are generally reluctant to update their software immediately, not wishing to be the guinea pigs that discover unexpected issues. That’s why Windows XP, which had a long and stable history, stuck around for so long. In fact, Windows 7 appears to be still running on at least 100 million machines, despite Microsoft ending support for the operating system a year ago. Apparently, one of the additional consequences of the pandemic, with workers and students struggling at home, has been the dusting down of old desktop PCs to tackle jobs that couldn’t be handled on a phone. No doubt there will be a few A4 inkjet printers, with hopelessly clogged heads, being thrown at walls as well! Certainly, any new PCs bought towards the end of this year are likely to come with Windows 11 already installed, and the update will be available free to the current ten users. So it’s well to be aware of its impending arrival. I may be an old cynic, but I am experienced enough to know that with every march forwards, there is likely to be at least one step

backwards, even if it is a small one. The one common fact about software “improvements” is that they require more computing power. More features mean the use of more memory, processing power and storage space. So increasingly, there will be pressure on business to upgrade their hardware as well as software simply to keep up — something they are often reluctant to do in good times, let alone hard ones. For anyone digging an old desktop out of the loft, they may be frustrated to find it will struggle to run a lot of modern software at peak performance anyway. Windows, for example, may give you a minimum specification to run, but that’s only the operating system functioning, not juggling all the other programs you’ve installed. And they all want to be updated too! The problem is that the software companies tend to work in their own isolation and assume that their product has priority. With the increasing use of machine learning — artificial intelligence running in the background to learn more about how you work and want to work — there is a real danger that in trying to be helpful, the machine can actually get in your way. As an industry, we rely so much on speed and efficiency to be profitable, so these considerations are important as wasted time is money, not just frustration. Hopefully, Windows 11 will be a step forward and not just another number. 15

PAPER ROUND

MADE IN FLENSBURG

325 YEARS OF PAPER

The Mitsubishi HiTec Paper mill in Flensburg is marking its 325th anniversary this year. Founded by Hinrich Gultzau in 1696 at “Mühlenstrom” outside the city gates.

I

n 1696, the Mecklenburg papermaker Hinrich Gultzau went to Flensburg. His ambitious plan was to build a paper mill. Back then, the city was still struggling to recover from the aftermath of the Thirty Years’ War. Papermaking also suffered severe setbacks during wartime, while demand continued to grow. This meant that towards the end of the 17th century paper was a scarce, valuable commodity. The most important condition for building a paper mill 325 years ago was a suitable watercourse with a corresponding natural gradient. At the gates of the city, on the “Mühlenstrom”, Gultzau found a suitable piece of land. After receiving official approval, he was allowed to set up a paper mill in front of the red gate in Hennings Lundt and to live there. The foundation stone for today’s paper mill in Flensburg was laid.

INDUSTRIALISATION…SPECIALISATION… FLEXIBILITY

In the 19th century, industrial paper production took off at a rapid pace. In the first half of the 19th century, all processes, which had up to that point been carried out by hand, were mechanised. In the second half, new raw materials began to be produced in special pulp factories. In 1848, the first paper machine was installed at the current location in Flensburg. In 1954, a paper machine for the production of hygiene papers was put into operation and in 1970 the production of giroform carbonless papers began. In the early 1990s, after the license agreement with Mitsubishi Paper Mills Ltd. for the production of 18

JULY-AUGUST 2021• QUICK PRINT PRO

PAPER ROUND thermal papers was signed, the production of thermoscript thermal papers started. The first application was paper for fax machines, which was the communication medium of choice at the time. In the 1990s and 2000s, investments were made in new high-tech coating processes for the finishing of speciality papers. Specialisation and increased flexibility of the modernised production facilities opened the

doors for new applications and new markets, for example, durable thermal paper with a topcoat for account statements, thermal paper with forgery proof security features for admission tickets and lottery tickets, or special thermal paper for the ever growing label sector. As a result of new technologies, a new product segment was created in Flensburg in 1998 – high quality coated jetscript inkjet papers.

Today the Flensburg mill stands for high flexibility, experienced papermakers and modern coating technologies. Team spirit is particularly important. The highly motivated, experienced and very well trained workforce works every day to fulfil special customer requests from all over the world, even in small quantities: innovative, individual and sustainable. www.mitsubishi-paper.com

Across 30 bold and vibrant colours, including four brand new shades and a new black, the range offers countless opportunities for creative transformation, from packaging and inserts, to book covers and art installations. The FSC® certified Sirio Color range of uncoated papers and boards is available in three finishes: smooth, rough and denim embossed. The collection presents 30 bright and intense colours for creatives to take in dynamic directions, including four brand new shades: Jasmine, Milkshake, Flamingo and Royal Green. Spanning from 80 to 700 g/m2, the collection is adaptable for a broad range of creative expressions, from lightweight leaflets to more robust packaging. Completely biodegradable and recyclable, the Sirio Color range offers creatives an environmentally friendly alternative, and its pulp coloured formation offers better light resistance. Fedrigoni’s new swatch book includes the Sirio Color Rough papers for the first time, whose textured surfaces inject a sense of tactility and craft into the collection. In the rough version there

are 11 colours available (including all four new shades), whereas the denim embossed range offers 21 shades, with all 30 colours present in the smooth format. The swatch book also features Sirio Black/White and Sirio White/White. Further Sirio options available include papers and boards for Digital for Dry Toner, Digital for HP Indigo, Stucco and Envelopes. Ian Braithwaite, Commercial Manager at

Fedrigoni UK, commented: “The new Sirio Color swatch book is Fedrigoni’s most universal yet. From our traditional smooth and embossed papers, to our latest rough range, there is a paper for every creative avenue. Each paper can be used with all major printing technologies (typesetting, offset, emboss, hot foil stamping, thermography and screen printing) as well as packaging processes (cutting, die-cutting, creasing, folding and gluing). The opportunities are limitless.” Justine Fox, Co-Founder of Calzada Fox, commented: “As a colour consultancy, we understand that colour is at the heart of our experience, acting as a stimulus for our emotions and a powerful tool for transformation. Fedrigoni’s new Sirio Color shades truly encapsulate the evocative power of colour. Where Jasmine’s delicate pink tint inspires a subtle sense of quietly confident craftsmanship, warmth radiates from the creamy yellow undertones in Milkshake, opening channels of positivity. Bursting with succulence and ripeness, Flamingo’s inclusive orange pink mix activates and energises the message, while Royal Green’s herbal depth connects this green to natural innovation and mindful products.” Quick Print Pros can get their hands on the Sirio Color swatch book by speaking to their local Paper Consultant via the Fedrigoni website or by emailing info.uk@fedrigoni.com www.fedrigoni.com

EVOCATIVE TONE SET FISH TOWN COLLECTION Evocative imagery of a man with his head in his hands in aguish, intense conversations over fresh stock and the completion of meticulous checking and packaging in laboratory like conditions.

T

he stunning body of work by photo journalist Steve Thornton documents the fortunes of Grimsby over 30 years. It records the working life of filleters and dock workers, the ice house at work, buying and selling, early morning auctions and more. The capture of these unique moments in time is made even more impactful by the use of monochrome to convey industrial starkness and an emotive, raw honesty. His reportage approach follows the local industry’s response to the introduction of EU Regulations in 1990 to Brexit in 2020. It shows how, according to Steve, its transformation from a ‘mephitic shanty town to a seafood science lab’ significantly impacted many small family owned businesses that could not afford to adapt to meet Europe’s regulations. Essential to the collection’s look and feel was the choice of paper and the way the images were produced. Explains Steve: “In 1990 I used Nikon F3 HP 35mm film cameras and Ilford Gallery paper. 30 years later I wanted to recreate the same results, with the same tonal range. I didn’t want to see a huge difference. The decision to use my Nikon D5 35mm digital cameras and similar focal length lenses was easy but I needed to find the right paper. I looked around and saw something on YouTube that talked about Epson fibre based exhibition paper. I tested some samples and found the finish was unbelievable. You can go from 100% black to 95% white to add richness and detail. Many of my images have people in silhouette but you can still see the highlights on the sleeves or the trousers. The level of detail is incredible.” The 10-colour Epson Sure-Color SCP900 created the prints using ultra-chrome archival 20

colour ink sets. Steve comments: “I always work in soft proofing and what you see on my 5k monitors is what is printed. I get 100% exactly what I want. If I want to make a certain tonal value 5% lighter, I can achieve just that.” The collection of 120 prints, featuring previously unpublished, digitally re-mastered images, is available to buy in the Signature series (hand signed and embossed onto A3+ stock), Studio series (same stock at a smaller size of A4) and Limited Edition series (larger size of A2 and only 10 per print). All three are printed on the Epson SCP900 on 325gsm stock soft gloss finish Epson Traditional Photo Paper, a fibre based exhibition paper. The easy to use Epson SCP900 photo printer

with customisable user interface has been developed with outstanding print quality as standard. Increased black density for better gradation, deeper blacks, and less graininess, is achieved through UltraChrome Pro 10 ink. Its F10 printhead and black enhance overcoat technology (BEO) for finer detail and texture in black areas. The blue colour gamut allows the user to more accurately reproduce the image seen on screen. The Fish Town Collection will be exhibited at a special inaugural venue in Grimsby before going on a UK gallery tour. THE QUEEN’S AWARDS FOR ENTERPRISE: INTERNATIONAL TRADE 2020

SIGN OF THE TIMES

SIGNS OF HISTORY

BEST OF GHOST SIGNS The people have spoken, and the ‘ghost’ sign for Peterkin Custard on St John’s Hill, Battersea, has been officially declared London’s best.

L

ondon claimed the title after six gruelling rounds of knockout competition on Twitter, narrowly beating Bloom’s Pianos on Kingsland Road, Shoreditch, in the final. Third place went to Meggezones on Noyna Road, Tooting, and over 5,000 votes were cast across the online event. The tournament was hosted by Sam Roberts, aka Mr Ghostsigns and co-author of Ghost Signs: A London Story, published by Isola Press in November. 64 entrants were shortlisted for the competition from the 250 fading painted wall signs whose stories are told in the 320-page book. Sam Roberts said, “It’s a worthy winner and I bet the signwriter that painted it in the 1920s would be proud to know it went on to great things. It advertised a range of products made at the Battersea Mills, and the company was once run by Joseph Arthur Rank, later of Rank Films fame. The sign is included on Wandsworth Council’s local heritage list, and so this charming Dutch boy in baggy trousers and clogs should keep on walking for years to come.” The Mayor of Wandsworth, Cllr Richard Field added, “These signs from yesteryear may be fading a little but they certainly add a colourful touch to many neighbourhoods. This book features some of the best surviving examples and gives an interesting insight into the shopping habits of our parents, grandparents and beyond. Hopefully it will encourage people to keep a lookout for these historical gems.” • Winner: Peterkin Custard, Corner of St John’s Hill and Sangora Road SW11 (Photo: Roy Reed)

THE BOOK

The Peterkin Custard sign will appear in Sam Roberts and Roy Reed’s new book Ghost Signs: A London Story. Published by Isola Press, it will be the most comprehensive and beautiful account of ghost signs ever produced, focusing on the hand-painted relics of London’s advertising past. Fully funded on Kickstarter in less than three days with backing continuing, Ghost Signs: A London Story has seen designer Wayne Hemingway brought on board to pen an introduction, as well as more pages added to the book. Isola Press makes award-winning combining image and text, including the most recent Rio Tape/Slide Archive: Radical Community Photography in Hackney in the 80s, about community reportage and resistance in 1980s Dalston. The book will be published before Christmas. Sam Roberts, Ghostsigns, 07989 409046

SHOWTIME

PRINT TRADE EXPO

DEMO: INTEC STAND

You are invited to the Intec stand at Print Trade Expo to view the winning combination of a print production flat sheet cutter with an automation enabled label cutter.

The newly launched Intec SC5000 is a brand-new cutter that will deliver new print products for frontline quick print pros. Visit: www.printtradeexpo.co.uk/detailed-stand-intec Todays’ commercial printers have been hitherto limited to a choice when considering finishing labels and POS in-house with devices based around basic vinyl cutters. Yes, good for labels but not card. Larger footprint flatbed tables that can cut card can lack any real automation unless budgets, space and workflow justify the new breed of larger automated flatbeds. However, Intec’s SC5000 is set to change all that by introducing a best of both worlds cross over product. Terri Winstanley, Intec product and marketing manager, told QPP that the SC5000, has been over two years in design and development and seeks to blend the advantages of multiple finishing devices into one simple, automated, small footprint device ideal for print service providers. The on-stand demonstration showed uniquely cut card items labels POS point of sale counter display stands, swing tickets, wedding stationery and prototype or short run light packaging. Many quick print pros are looking to get stuck into sheet label production. Book your own demonstration to make your print products reach further. Intec has been supplying cutters since 2016. Originally under an OEM development called the CC500 which was based on Graphtec’s F-mark solution, however since 2017 Intec has been developing their own cutting technology and building up their R&D teams and even in-house software development specifically cutters for the QPP audience. At Fespa 2019 Intec launched one of the first automated flatbed cutters providing the first affordable automated flatbed systems in Europe – since then Intec has widened its range with a full suite of cutters some reaching their third generation of evolution. The SC5000 combines features of vinyl or label-based cutters and incorporated technological advances that have been rewarded from Intec’s heavy investment in development of flatbed cutters. The result is a compact device with retractable exit trays and wheels that can be moved around a print shop and tucked away when not in use. Sorry, back to the demonstration, this SC5000 is an automated digital die-cutter with two different tool holders which can cut, and crease in one operation. The automation doesn’t stop with the feeding system as this next generation finisher also includes registration sensors using CCD camera technology that doubles as a job recognition system automating the entire process. Of course you or your operator will still have to load the sheets (even mixed jobs) before kick-off, then come back when finished. The Intec SC5000 employs a totally new style of feeding for this class using an articulating perforated rubber vacuum belt the width of the media. This ensures a much more reliable media pick up. It is coupled with no fewer than four different media separation techniques to deliver outstanding feeding and reliability including: Air Blade at front to pre-separate sheets; vacuum pick up from top only; catch fingers to prevent multiple sheets lifting; and flex and jog sheets before advance to drop any clinging/attached media. More innovation in the SC5000 digital cutter from Intec includes their new Vision3 CCD registration sensor, which detects registration marks to align the page which compensates

24

for scale, skew or rotation print errors. The SC5000 scans each sheet as it loads and will automatically retrieve cutting files for true fully unattended operation. Users can stack a mixed batch of jobs in the feeder and leave the cutter to work. The sheets will be automatically picked up, fed into the cutter, check the QR code, find the appropriate cutting file and cut the job before ejecting it and moving on to the next sheet. Set a specific number of sheets or simply tell the cutter to keep going until the feeder is empty. For larger runs refill the feeder on the fly while you are printing the rest of the job. Many thanks to Terri for the excellent demonstration and in recognition of the Intec product development we have bestowed a new PTE virtual Best in Show Award. www.printtradeexpo.co.uk/detailed-stand-intec sales@intecprinters.com • 01202 845960 www.IntecPrinters.com

EPSON COMMITS TO BECOME CARBON NEGATIVE AND UNDERGROUND RESOURCE FREE BY 2050 Global technology firm Epson has set out its sustainability focused vision for the future, which includes a commitment to reducing its carbon emissions in line with the 1.5ºC scenario by 2030. The company will join the RE100, a global collective of businesses committed to 100% renewable electricity and aims to achieve this milestone by 2023. Epson has also committed to become carbon negative and underground resource free by 2050 and will report regularly on its global progress towards this goal. Yoshiro Nagafusa, who was appointed President of Epson Europe on April 1 of this year, comments on this commitment: “At Epson, we aspire to operate and develop technologies in ways that can help to support society with the evolving issues it faces, and there are few more important matters than climate change. I am particularly proud to take on this leadership role for Epson Europe as we enter a new phase for

the company. I look forward to leading our European operations as we work to reduce the impact Epson products and services and supply chains have on the environment.” Prior to his appointment as president, Mr Nagafusa was Senior Vice President for Epson Europe with responsibility for optimising infrastructure and sales operations in the organisation’s CISMEA region. Mr Nagafusa has held a number of senior positions at Epson both in Europe and globally in more than 30 years with the company. Epson recently announced Epson 25 Renewed, a new corporate vision to drive the company towards its goals of achieving sustainability and enriching communities. Epson’s strong sustainability commitments and achievements already see it ranking in the top ten of all companies measured by industry intelligence provider IDC’s sustainability framework, rating higher than average across all indexes measured.

Yoshiro Nagafusa, President of Epson Europe

Epson’s revised Environmental Vision 2050 reinforces these goals, as the company seeks to become carbon negative and underground resource free by 2050 through a programme of decarbonisation, closing resource loops, customer environmental impact mitigation and the development of innovative environmental technologies. Daniel Quelch, Sustainability Manager at Epson UK, adds: “The new Environmental Vision 2050 and our new membership of the

RE100 are landmark moments for our company. This renewed vision is a testament to where we as a company have come so far, and where we still want to go by establishing ambitious and measurable goals. I am inspired by the commitment of Epson employees across Europe to delivering on this vision, and I have absolute confidence in our ability to achieve it together.” RE100 — Epson announced on April 15 that it will join the RE100, a global collective of large and influential businesses committed to 100% renewable energy. Epson is fast progressing towards this goal, announcing on March 26, 2021 that all sites in the Nagano Prefecture would transition to 100% renewable electricity by April 1, 2021. This news follows the March 16 announcement made by Epson that all of its worldwide group sites will meet their electricity needs from 100% renewable energy sources by 2023. www.epson.co.uk

WHAT IS THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY? Repro Sales and Repairs pave the way on a road map to a new circular economy for quick print pros. The RSR new economic model moves away from the current linear economy, where materials are mined, manufactured, used and thrown away, to a more circular economy where resources are kept in use and their value is retained. Moving away from the linear Take-Make-Waste economic model to one where the economic value of the resources is fully utilised becomes ever more essential. RSR strive to help print service suppliers to lead by example and improve their CSR statements and of course their carbon footprint. For many years Repro Sales and Repairs has been refurbishing used equipment within the graphic arts industry.

In many cases this is equipment that no longer meets the current user’s production requirements or becomes surplus to their ongoing needs as production changes.

At the RSR workshop all equipment is cleaned and serviceable parts replaced. Technical and engineering knowledge allow the connection of these machines to the latest software and modern operating systems. The final product is then ready to find a new owner and can look forward to many years of continued operation, thus completing the up-cycle circle. Equipment not making the grade is stripped down and used for spare parts to maintain and keep other machines in operation. Get to know the RSR ethics and explore their new flatbed UV digital print range including the Alpha-Jet Plus, Gibson Flatbed and iEcho cutting solution. www.Repro-Sales.co.uk 01268 784999 • sales@repro-Sales.co.uk

METSÄ BOARD NAMED ON THE FINANCIAL TIMES CLIMATE LEADERS 2021 LIST The Financial Times published its first listing of Europe’s Climate Leaders in May 2021. The European companies that had achieved the biggest reduction in their greenhouse gas emissions intensity between 2014-19 were accepted on the list of 300 best performing companies. Metsä Board was named as one of the businesses on the list. The report is a public acknowledgement of the company’s leadership in reducing their emissions intensity at a time when the fight against

26

global warming remains a primary issue. Metsä Board’s greenhouse gas emission reduction targets are approved by the Science Based Targets initiative, and they meet the most ambitious goals of the Paris Agreement, i.e. limiting global warming to 1.5°C. The aspiring target is that all mills will use 100% fossil free energy and raw materials by the end of 2030. “Metsä Board is a leader in sustainability and a position on the FT List is a welcome recognition to our continuous efforts. The position on this list

confirms the considerable work we have already done to reduce our emissions and reinforces our commitment of working towards our 2030 ambitious goal of 100% fossil free mills and raw materials,” says Anne Uusitalo, Sustainability Director at Metsä Board. INNOTECH LAUNCHES NEW PAVEMENT SIGNS Innotech Digital has launched a brand new series of pavement signs to add to its range of durable, practical and innovative display products. The seven new display products allow printers and sign-makers to provide a greater range of flexible outdoor signage solutions that allow customised printable signage using Innotech media products. The additional systems add variety to the company’s Consul Premium Pavement Signs and Herald A-Frames, providing many more applications with their unique designs. Kieran Dallow, Innotech Digital’s Marketing Manager, says, “Pavement signs provide a powerful and flexible means of displaying to consumers across a broad range of industries. They bring brand messaging and advertising outside for retailers, hospitality and service companies and allow them to add important visual communications to target potential customers. They can be moved to where they are most needed and can be used to inform of new products, special offers, directions or simply a ‘We are Here’ marketing message. Our new range of uniquely designed products allow print providers and sign-makers the opportunity to give their customers even more flexibility and innovation to their outdoor displays - whatever the weather!” The new products from Innotech include: The Consul Premium Black Outdoor Pavement Sign is a single or double sided display that is virtually indestructible for long lasting outdoor use through all kinds of weather. Graphics can be loaded quickly and easily into the dual snap frames, while anti-glare covers protect them from the weather. The black moulded plastic base can be filled with either sand or water and includes built in wheels for easy transportation. Combined with the spring mounted display, this sign delivers superior performance even in windy conditions. The Consul Giant Outdoor Pavement Sign offers similar display and wind resistance to the standard product above, but has a poster size of 40″ x 60″ and an overall height of 1960mm. This is ideal when you really need to grab attention, perhaps at an outdoor festival or large shopping area. The Consul Extra Tall Outdoor Pavement Sign is just under 2m tall, making it a real attention grabber, particularly on busy high streets and shopping centres. It can be filled with water or sand and can resist moderate winds. The Rhythm Flexible Forecourt Sign has a clean, modern looking design and a flexible base allowing for moderate wind. It has an innovative graphic cover that allows for quick and easy replacement of graphics. This product is ideal for busy retail environments or hospitality where the marketing message needs to be changed regularly. The Messenger Plastic A-Frame is a hard working twist on the traditional

A-board for when you need something that can survive more rugged conditions. It delivers a compact, targeted presence coupled with heavy duty performance. Messenger’s innovative moulded plastic frame is virtually indestructible and can be filled with water for added stability, weighing a whopping 8kg when full, this is an ideal choice for unforgiving environments such as pavements, forecourts, garages and fuel stations. Messenger can be used single or double sided and uses a simple but effective system of moulded traps to secure a rigid graphic, making it easy to install or change your message. It folds flat for compact storage and features an integral handle for convenient transportation. Graphic size 327x576mm. The Vanguard Outdoor Sign Holder is inspired by the traffic cone and can be used as such where additional signage is required. It features a 336mm x 387mm graphic zone, which is easy to assembly and can be filled with water or sand for additional weight. Its overall height is 1125mm. The Outrider Mobile Outdoor A-Frame is a robust A-frame, which can be wheeled outside for when a shop is open and back in again at closing time. Its clean modern design gives a strong statement to the discerning shopper and graphics can be replaced easily with its unique graphic cover system. Kieran Dallow concludes, “As more and more retail, hospitality and other services are focusing on outside areas, we are delighted to bring this innovative range of products to market. We are always keen to give printers and signmakers the best possible range of products to support their customers, particularly when it comes to creating eye catching displays in a range of environments.” www.innotechdigital.com

NEW FREE ONLINE TOOL CALCULATES MEDIA COSTS Innotech Digital has launched its free Printing Cost Calculator. This online tool provides instant, accurate information on the amount of media required for your print job and can help you optimise your purchasing to minimise waste and maximise cost savings. The tool is completely free and accessible by following the link to https:// innotechdigital.com/printing-cost-calculator/ Kieran Dallow, Innotech Digital’s Marketing Manager, says, “Our free Printing Cost Calculator is a comprehensive and accurate tool for measuring the amount of media required and how much this will cost. The tool allows you to enter the size of your print jobs and the cost of the media for different widths and roll lengths and then calculates the most cost effective combination of media options. This will help customers save time and money as well as minimise potential wastage.” It is traditionally difficult to accurately specify the best media size to use for print jobs and this often results in much more media wastage that would have been necessary if the correct widths and roll lengths were used. This wastage is not only bad for the environment, but adds significantly to the cost of most print jobs. The Innotech Printing Cost Calculator shows instantly how

28

much your print jobs will cost and allows you to look at ways of minimising this depending on size of rolls and types of media. Kieran Dallow concludes, “Our unique Print Cost Calculator is free to use for all printing jobs. As a company we know how important it is to reduce the amount of waste products in our industry and we also want people to get the most from their print investments. We believe this calculator will quickly become an essential tool in the planning and specification of printing jobs across the country.” www.innotechdigital.com • Kieran.dallow@innotechdigital.com

EPICPRINT IMPROVES RESPONSE WITH HORIZON RD-4055

PRINT NEW PRODUCTS FOR NEW CUSTOMERS

The Dorset printer of 30 years standing provides its wide ranging customer base with enhanced print. Epic’s clients are based in a broad range of key sectors: cosmetics, food, hospitality, manufacturing and professional services. Approximately 65% of their work is secondary packaging and the balance is marketing communications. Pictured: John Formon, Technical Director (left) and Jason Clients range from Lush Johnson, Lead Technician, with the Horizon RD-4055 Cosmetics, Charbonnel et Walker and Four Corners Advertising for Harrods Estates and Southampton Football Club. Recently Epic has gained significant wins in personalised products for the online gifting arena and the RD4055DM provides a significant edge in quick make ready with one sheet approval, as well as speed of throughput coupled with excellent die cutting quality. It produces litho print on a B2 Mitsubish, six colour, LED and digital print on an Indigo 7900. Its post press suite includes a Scodix digital print enhancement press and Kama hot foil stamping and die cutting with stripping and blanking system. Jon Formon, Technical Director, explains: “In our post press department, we were experiencing bottle necks with our existing machinery. We also wanted to improve our response times whilst maintaining quality.” The investment follows the addition of a Horizon AFC-566F Combination Cross Folder and a MKU-38 Mobile Knife Unit in December 2017. Says Jon: “We were impressed with the quality of the folder so we were comfortable buying a machine from the same stable. We were already familiar with the software. The robustness and footprint were also impressive. I looked at a number of machines but kept coming back to the Horizon.” As for what stood out on the Horizon RD-4055DM he states: “We liked the step and repeat feature meaning we use a 1 up die on a 3 up format sheet. This saves a considerable amount on the cost of dies.” He continues: “It will help us spreading the load. We perform a large amount of die-cutting and versioning and the quick make ready assists in maintaining efficiency. We have been very impressed with the machine - its kiss cutting is fantastic.” The Horizon RD-4055DM with dual magnetic cylinders is designed to simultaneously die-cut and crease/score short-run product from both sides of the sheet. Running at a speed of up to 6,000 cycles per hour, it can also perforate, slit, hole punch and round corner in one process for digital and offset printed sheets up to 0.5mm. Its repeat-register function enables the running of multiple up imposed applications with a smaller die to reduce die cost (Up to five repeats in a single pass). As for working with IFS Jon adds: “We have always found IFS to be professional and responsive.” www.ifsl.uk.com

STUDENTS IN STITCHES Northumbria University has paid a special tribute to the impact of its HP Stitch S300 dye sublimation printer, revealing that the device has played a key role in allowing students to continue learning and working during the pandemic. Installed by HP distributor RA Smart at Northumbria University’s Faculty of Art, Design and Social Science in the spring of 2020, the HP Stitch S300 was initially brought in to increase the textile offering to non-specialist students throughout the university.

30

The printer’s dye sublimation technology allows students to make use of modern man made and recycled fabrics that have traditionally been difficult to print onto. In addition, the device now plays a much wider role in the education of students on new MA (Masters) courses, specifically around performance/ sportswear and sustainable and ethical fashion. However, the remote management capability of the HP Stitch S300 printer was critical during the pandemic as it allowed students to continue to engage with the practical element of their studies from samples for soft furnishings, to fashion students looking to push the boundaries of print through fabrication. www.hp.com

THE JOKE’S ON YOU

READERS’ SCRIBES

SOMETHING TO SHARE? MYSTERY GARDEN

Someone keeps dumping soil all over my flower bed, and I don’t know who’s doing it? The plot thickens.

LFP LINGO

BOSS: “What should we call this giant advertising board?” PHIL: “A philboard!” BILL: “No, wait... I have a better idea!”

YES, ANOTHER MOTHER-IN-LAW JOKE

A woman calls her mother. “My husband and I have been fighting so much lately. I am going to come live with you again.” Her mother replies, “No dear, he should pay for his mistakes. I am coming to live with you.”

EX-SALESMAN QUITS AS TAXI DRIVER Why did the salesman give up being a taxi driver? There was too much talking behind his back.

SALES TRIP

A copier salesman went to New York on a business trip. When the trip was over, he took a cab to get to the airport. The cab driver decided to have a little fun at the salesman’s expense, so he asked, “My mother had three kids, one was my brother, one was my sister, who was the third?” The passenger had no idea. The driver replied, “The third one was ME!” The salesman went home to his wife and said to her, “Hey honey, here’s a riddle for you. My mother had three kids, one was my brother, one was my sister, who was the third one?” His wife was stumped and said, “I don’t know, who?” The man responded, “Believe it or not, some cab driver in New York.”

A SMALL VALUE JOKE

Did you hear about the mathematician who’s afraid of negative numbers? He will stop at nothing to avoid them.

I’m a multi-tasker.

NEW GARLIC DIET

Did you hear about the new garlic diet? You don’t actually lose weight, but you look thinner from a distance.

An aunt who taught positive thinking — Wayto Gogh. And his magician uncle — Wherediddy Gogh

ONLY THE BACKSTROKE

T-shirt is actually short for tyrannosaurus shirt. It’s because of the small arms.

Swimming Coach: “Hey! Why are you doing only the backstroke?” Swimmer: “Because I just ate, sir. I don’t want to swim on a full stomach.”

BEST TIME O’CLOCK

DOWN UNDER SALES

T-SHIRT IS SHORT FOR

6:30 is the best time on a clock. Hands down!

CLEAN JOKE

Why can’t towels tell jokes? Because they have a dry sense of humour.

NO ZOOM CHAT FUN

My boss always laughed at my jokes at work, but since the pandemic she never laughs at them in Zoom chats. I asked her why she doesn’t laugh at them anymore. She replied, “Because your jokes aren’t remotely funny.”

KIDS FOOTBALL

“Look, Ben,” the coach said, “you know the principles of good sportsmanship. You know the FA League doesn’t allow temper tantrums, shouting at the referee, or abusive language.” “Yes, Sir. I understand.” “Good, Ben. Now, would you explain that to your father?”

SALAD FOR DINNER

I came home from work this evening and said to my wife, “Are we having salad for dinner?” “Yes we are, how did you know?” she asked. I replied, “Because I can’t hear the smoke alarm.”

VAN GOGH FAMILY

Vincent Van Gogh had a really large family. Here’s a listing of some of the lesser known relatives: The really obnoxious brother — Please Gogh The brother who ate prunes — Gotta Gogh His dizzy aunt — Verti Gogh

I can listen,

Fun fact: Australia’s biggest export is boomerangs. It’s also their biggest import.

FIGHT!

A policeman breaks up a fight by two invisible men. As the crowd gathers, he shouts, “Move along, folks. There’s nothing to see here!”

SALES TRIP

A salesman and a printer were fishing in the sunny Caribbean. They were discussing their previous great holiday when the salesman said, “I’m here because my house burned down, and everything I owned was destroyed by the fire. The insurance company paid for everything.” That is quite a coincidence,” said the printer. “I’m here because my house and all my belongings were destroyed by a flood, and my insurance company also paid for everything.” The salesman, quite puzzled, asked, “How do YOU start a flood?”

TELESALES GAME

Our computers went down at work today, so we had to do everything manually. It took me twenty minutes to shuffle the cards for solitaire.

GOOD DECISION

I took my bike to the off licence the other day. I got a bottle of vodka and put it in the bike’s basket. As I was about to leave, I thought to myself that if I fell off the bottle would break. So, I drank all the vodka and then headed home. It turned out to be a really good decision, because I fell off nine times on my way home.
