PrintIT! 2012 – judged
PrintIT! a well established schools programme for the print and paper industries has just completed the 2011/12 competition in preparation for its 2012 Awards. The PrintIT! competition for 2011/2012, which is backed by the industry and sponsored by many organisations including; HP, Fujifilm and DS Smith , saw hundreds of entries come in from schools and students across England and Scotland providing a difficult task for this year’s judges. Last week 10 key people from the print and paper industries came together at Duplo’s international offices in Surry along with Fairtrade, who support the programme, to offer their expertise and help to decide the best entries per category for the 2011/12 PrintIT! competition. Sidney Bobb, Chairman at BAPC who helped judge the entries said “I was particularly impressed by the number of entries submitted this year for the PrintIT awards. It seems that the competition is becoming more and more popular and it is comforting to see that so many young people are interested in the creative side of the graphic communications industry” Andrew Pearce, CEO of the IPIA commented, ‘It was a real pleasure and an honour to be asked to judge the PrintIT! entries this year. The effort that the students had put in was phenomenal and I was delighted with the standard. It was a hard job but we chose the winners and I am looking forward to celebrating their success with them at the Awards presentation’.
As part of the competition students were asked to complete a survey and give their feedback on the programme. Students commented that they enjoyed learning about the programme and the Print and Paper industries, designing and making models and visiting companies. One student said “I enjoyed the creativity and learning opportunities. It gave me more of an insight into print industries and helped me to increase skills in different areas I will need in projects in the future. Another added “I enjoyed learning lots about the Printing Industry (as I knew nothing before!) and using that knowledge to come up with a new product.” For more information about PrintIT! or other schools programmes please visit www.theits.org.uk or call 01235 833 844
73 years on and 4th Generation Director appointed
There are family businesses throughout the UK but only a few can claim a 4th generation of the founding family being appointed as a Director. Hertfordshire based Phillips Plastics have just appointed Heather Phillips as a Director of the Company. Heather, who has worked for the Company for five years, is the great granddaughter of founder Walter Phillips and daughter of Managing Director, Peter. It was in 1939 that Walter Phillips established Walter Phillips (Perivale) Ltd in Perivale, Middlesex, as a manufacturer of “Mounts and Albums of distinction and good taste”. Under the Unicorn brand name came high quality photo albums and presentation products. As the company grew, so too did the reputation. During their 73 year history, the company has been involved with the production of presentation and commemorative albums for the Royal family and supplying the famous “This is Your Life” red books. Surviving recessions and coping with a host of technological advancements, the company, now based in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, has grown to become the innovative packaging, promotion and presentation specialists they are today. “The business has always been based on designing and manufacturing custom made solutions,” said Peter Phillips, Managing Director, “and to see another generation of the Phillips family ready to carry on that tradition is fantastic.” During her time so far with Phillips Plastics, Heather has gained experience in many different aspects of the business including importing, purchasing, production control, sales and account management. “It is wonderful to be appointed as a Director and to have the opportunity of keeping the Phillips Plastics business moving forward in the future” said Heather. “One of the most challenging areas for me has been familiarising myself with the sheer diversity of products we can produce, especially when so many of the items are designed in house to do a particular job for an individual customer.” Phillips leads the field in providing inspirational corporate branding solutions to the packaging, presentation and promotion problems encountered by its customers and also manufactures a stock range of products available to order online via their phillipsdirect.co.uk website, including their unique (POD) Print On Demand range. “We have been in business for the last 73 years, because of our ability to meet the changing needs of our clients, using our in house design and manufacturing facilities. I have every confidence that Heather’s appointment will ensure that continues far into the future,” Peter added. More details of the packaging, presentation and promotion products supplied by Phillips Plastics can be found at www.phillipsplastics. co.uk or by telephoning 0845 4567 007.

Prontaprint Gloucester Duplo Investment
Prontaprint Gloucester has reported a significant improvement in productivity since installing a new Duplo mini suction bookletmaking solution. Despite its small footprint, the system is rich with automatic features that have reduced setup time and put the system on target to produce 250,000 booklets in the first year. The business was started over 30 years ago and moved to its current industrial location just outside central Gloucester eight years ago. It focuses entirely on the B2B market and includes Gloucestershire NHS amongst its list of high profile customers. The company has an impressive plant list that includes 3 Heidelberg two colour machines, a Konica Minolta colour digital press and a dedicated black and white production unit also from KM. Craig Wilson, General Manager at Prontaprint Gloucester noted this was an important investment consideration, “Our digital-litho split is about 50-50 so we needed a system that would be comfortable handling both outputs.” Prontaprint purchased the machine from local finishing specialist Docu-Finish Solutions (DFS). Stuart Granger, Managing Director of DFS was instrumental in the selection process. He commented, “Prontaprint needed something that could stand up to their annual production volumes, fit in the space available and crucially be within budget. The only system that could do everything they needed was the Duplo.” The finishing team at Prontaprint have been particularly impressed with their new machine. The level of automation was a particular point of praise, “I can change between sizes electronically so it is much quicker to set up than our old system” commented Anja Schott, Finishing Specialist. The Duplo DSC-10/20 collator features 10 bins, or two towers can be connected to create a 20-bin system. In addition to feeding into a bookletmaker the tower is offered with an optional integral stacker for collate-only jobs. Craig concluded, “Had this Duplo system not existed we would have been forced to buy secondhand. It fills a space in the market, offering a good range of features and productivity at the right price. It has been a great addition to our business.” For more information regarding Duplo UK, please contact Marc Legge, 01932 263 905, marc.legge@duplouk.com For more information regarding Prontaprint Gloucester, please contact Craig Wilson, 01452 522411, craig@gloucester.prontaprint.com

Zund plays key part in British Airways Olympics Zund UK is proud that one of its machines, a Zund PN M1200 owned and operated by British Airways has played a key role in the creation of a special fleet of “Dove” aircraft as part of the BA Great Britons programme, celebrating the best in British talent in the run up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The special “Dove” aircraft design is all encompassing of the livery, using the cockpit for its beak, fuselage and wings for its main body and wings, and the tailfin as its tail. The aircrafts are white with gold strokes of paint to represent the feathers. Ensuring that the unique design could be successfully applied to the BA fleet of aircraft was a complex task that was expertly managed by Phil Purbrick, BA Graphics Engineer who works in the BA Graphics Department. Phil is British Airway’s Zund expert. He has worked with Zund machines for 18 years and his skill with the Zund PN M1200 and knowledge of the BA fleet ensured that the design could be successfully converted into the stencils that were laid on to the aeroplane prior to spray painting. Understandably, Phil is very proud to have been involved with the Great Britons programme to celebrate the London 2012 Olympics. “The BA Doves aircraft is definitely one of the most intricate projects that I

have been involved with. Knowing that I could rely on the Zund PN M1200 to perform was really important. It’s never let me down in all these years,” said Phil. Xerox and EFI new Konica Minolta launches its level of productivity social media platforms and image quality EFI has announced the new Xerox EX Print Server, powered by Fiery, for the new Xerox iGen 150 Press, a break through combination in commercial print. Using Fiery System 10, the Fiery Driven Xerox iGen 150 provides customers with advanced capabilities to produce high margin print jobs including personalised communications and packaging. This powerful Fiery technology was showcased on the Xerox and EFI stands at drupe. “In addition to the image quality and reliability the market has come to expect from both EFI and Xerox, the Fiery EX Print Server adds new levels of image quality with the introduction of Dynamic High Definition Text and Graphics,” said John Henze, vice president of Fiery marketing, EFI. This exclusive EFI capability provides unsurpassed text and line sharpness and smoothness, creating output that will ‘wow’ customers.” The EX Print Server’s blazing RIP speeds allow operators to process more jobs at faster speeds, critical when most shops are facing the challenge of managing a growing number of smaller jobs with faster turnarounds. In addition, the EX Print Server’s variable data printing (VDP) capabilities offer open, scalable workflow tools from entry level to advanced, making operators more productive as they grow their VDP volumes. The EX Print Server supports common VDP protocols, including PPML PDF/VT, VPS and VIPP, enabling a single, streamlined print production workflow for all job types.
The EX Print Server offers exciting new features that surpass even the toughest customer demands. *Dynamic HD Text and Graphics — This new capability, available only in the EX Print Server, gives operators the ability to print with superior edge and text quality for all colour and saturation levels. This ability to produce text and graphics in high definition and deliver the industry’s best text and graphics quality helps differentiate printing operations in a highly competitive marketplace. *Image Enhance Visual Editor (IEVE) — A new version of this fully integrated plug-in application offers quick, on the fly correction for individual images including the ability to enhance the tone, colour and sharpness of any photo in a document. Not only does this allow exceptional image adjustment capability at the point of print, but it also saves significant time and eliminates production delays as operators do not need access to the original design files. Print providers need more workflow automation and seamless integration with MIS/ERP systems to increase efficiency and reduce cost. The open Fiery platform is part of EFI’s integrated portfolio, offering the only submission to production workflow that allows printing operations to increase productivity and achieve higher profits. Fiery technology is a great fit with EFI’s market leading portfolio of productivity software, including PrintSmith, Pace, Radius and Monarch management systems and the EFI Digital StoreFront web to print platform. The EX Print Server conforms to industry standards and serves as a gateway to third party technologies such as Xerox FreeFlow Workflow, Agfa Apogee and Kodak Prinergy. www.efi.com

The advanced ink formula means that prints are lightfast for up to three years outdoors without lamination.* Richard Barrow, senior product manager at Epson Europe, comments: “The SC-S70600 allows users with demanding high quality applications to reliably and cost effectively print vivid colours, solid whites and a range of special metallic effects on clear film, vinyl, canvas, photographic paper and other popular substrates. It dramatically expands the user’s creative options and therefore market appeal, without compromising productivity.” The SC-S70600 can produce everything from exhibition displays, posters,
banners, textiles, backlit panels and POS materials to vehicle wraps, wallpaper and labels. Its productivity is further boosted by its ergonomic design, which minimises both downtime and materials wastage. A jack system at the rear of the printer makes loading a new media roll a one person job, while the media loading lever can be reached from either the front or the back of the printer for greater convenience. Users can make feed adjustments during printing without stopping and re-starting the printer. UltraChrome GSX ink is odourless and nickel free, making the SC-S70600 kinder to the environment and suitable for use in an office environment. The printer’s running costs and environmental impact are reduced further through its ENERGY STAR qualified power efficiency. The Epson SureColor 64-inch range now features the: four colour 29m2/hour SureColor SC-S30600, the 4/5-colour 53.2m2/hour SureColor SC-S50600 and the 8/10-colour 27m2/hour SureColor SC-S70600. Key Features: High-quality, 10-colour printer supporting both white and metallic ink simultaneously; 8-colour model without white and metallic ink also available; Epson UltraChrome GSX Ink offers widest colour gamut of Epson’s SureColor printer range; Light inks provide smooth tonal gradations and transitions, including light black ink for enhanced neutral greyscales; Epson’s proven Thin Film Piezo printhead for precise droplet formation and long production life; Long-lasting prints — lightfast for three years outdoors without lamination*; Print resolutions up to 1440 x 1440dpi; Prints on a wide range of coated and non-coated media up to 64 inches (162.6cm) wide; Single-operator roll media loading; Media loading lever can be accessed from both front and rear of printer; Automatic substrate tensioning; Easy substrate set-up with automatic print optimisation for various media; Speeds of up to 27.3m2/hr (high-speed mode) and 18.4m2/hr (production mode) when printing with banner materials; Enhanced UltraChrome GSX Ink requires no ventilation and is suitable for use in an office environment; ENERGY STAR-qualified power efficiency for economic running and minimised environmental impact; Optional supply system for heavy rolls up to 80kg; and an Optional heater to dry prints faster in high-throughput applications www.epson.eu
Expanded Pantone matching system Pantone has announced the addition of 336 new colours to its PANTONE PLUS SERIES, bringing the total to 1,677 colours. Introduced in 2010, the PANTONE PLUS SERIES is the next generation of the PANTONE MATCHING SYSTEM — the defacto standard for colour communication in the graphic arts market. The PLUS SERIES provides an accurate way for designers to communicate and control colour throughout the entire design process — from inspiration to final output. The 336 new colours offer designers more options and flexibility in the creative pro PLUS SERIES Colour Library. The 336 New Colours enrich the current PLUS SERIES palette, providing a more comprehensive selection. All colour families are extended to include a wider variety of values, saturation and undertones — from subtle pastels and reliable mid-tones to the intensity of deep tones, vivid brights and vital, nuanced neutrals. “Pantone is committed to continually deliver essential colour inspiration and innovation to creatives and colour professionals,” said Giovanni Marra, director of corporate marketing at Pantone. “We created the 336 new colours with this in mind, expanding all colour ranges to offer designers greater creative freedom.” The new colours were inspired by the PANTONE Goe System and add depth and breadth to the PLUS SERIES Colour Library with fresh hues that did not previously exist. The Goe System represents important technical improvements in the area of ink film consistency and coatability, and these benefits have migrated to the 336 new colours. Formulated using
consistent ink-film thicknesses, the 366 new colours can be easily reproduced by printers worldwide. All 336 new colours will be available in coated and uncoated formats and are printed on text-weight paper to match popular print specifications. The 336 new colours, coated and uncoated, are available immediately and can be purchased from the Pantone website at www. pantone.com/plus and through PANTONE Resellers worldwide. The additional colours will be available as supplements for a limited time so owners of previous publications can easily update their Guides. COLOUR BRIDGE supplements featuring the 336 new colours will be available in June. All new orders for core publications (PANTONE FORMULA GUIDE, COLOUR BRIDGE, etc.) will ship with the 336 New Colours supplements. The 336 new colours will also be available in CAPSURE™ and the myPANTONE™ mobile app (for iPhone and Android smartphones) by early June. XAAR EXCELLENCE AT SCIENCE MUSEUM Xaar, the developer and manufacturer of inkjet technology and manufacturer of industrial inkjet printheads, has beaten competition from hundreds of other UK companies to win a place in the Government’s ‘Make it in Great Britain’ exhibition this summer. Xaar joins over 40 British businesses at the event, including such iconic brands as Airbus, McLaren and BAE Systems. The exhibition of cutting edge British manufacturing takes place at the Science Museum from 24th July to 9th September to coincide with the Olympic and Paralympic games. It is the culmination of the ‘Make it in Great Britain’ campaign launched last year by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills to challenge outdated opinions of modern manufacturing and dispel the myth that Britain ‘doesn’t make anything anymore’. Xaar will showcase some of its leading technology to demonstrate to exhibition visitors the value of manufacturing to UK business. Headquartered on Cambridge’s Science Park, Xaar has been at the forefront of industrial inkjet printhead development since its foundation in 1990. Its piezoelectric printheads are used to jet a variety of fluids onto a range of materials and Xaar’s technology has changed the face of industrial printing processes in the global print, packaging and ceramics industries. The company is currently achieving record growth. Over the last seven years alone, Xaar has grown from 180 to almost 500 employees, and year on year sales in 2011 grew by 26 per cent to £68.7 million. Xaar has recently invested £22 million to expand its printhead manufacturing at its state-of-the-art facilities in Huntingdon, UK. “We are delighted to be part of such a great platform for British innovation,”
said Ted Wiggans, Operations Director at Xaar. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to showcase our innovative printhead technology that was invented in the UK. Our flagship Xaar 1001 printhead is manufactured in the UK and 86 per cent of our printheads are exported, sold and used all over the world, making an important contribution to the UK economy. We invest around 8 per cent of turnover in R&D and are always looking for highly skilled and motivated individuals to help us grow the business further.” Business Minister Mark Prisk said: “Manufacturing accounts for eight per cent of total UK employment and well over half of export goods, yet current perceptions of the industry are out of date and do not reflect that reality. We have selected a really exciting mix of exhibits, and I hope that as many people as possible visit the exhibition and see all of the great examples of British design and manufacturing — it will be spectacular.” Ian Blatchford, Director of the Science Museum commented: “We’re incredibly excited to be hosting the Make it in Great Britain exhibition this summer. The Science Museum and its world leading collections demonstrate some of the greatest engineering achievements of the last 200 years. We hope that as many people as possible visit the exhibition, and see at first hand how innovation in British manufacturing is still thriving today.” The exhibition will be open from 24th July to 9th September, and is free to visit. sharpfanlabs.com wins QPP SOTM
In the run up to the UEFA Euro 2012™, Sharp are switching their attention from the pitch to the terraces — and beyond — with a Europe-wide study of football fans. Sharp FanLabs will combine extensive research with hardcore science to bring a new level of understanding to the game.
The FanLabs website www.sharpfanlabs.com offers football fans around the world the chance to get actively involved in the fan experiment, creating their own fan profile. Fans can find out their own personal passion score with the help of just a few questions and then share their results with friends before using surveys on the website or mobile applications for smartphones to further refine their score. Together with the knowledge gained from the biometric analysis, the surveys offer unprecedented opportunities and never seen before insights to compare European football fans.
Football labs on wheels for fans to tour across Europe The project’s centrepiece is the FanLab truck, a mobile laboratory that will offer a unique way to gauge fans’ emotions. Inside, a total of 16 places are available for the use of experts deploying biometric analysis to obtain insights into the range of emotions fans are experiencing while watching a match. Paul Molyneux, CEO Sharp Electronics Europe explains, “We’re investigating fans’ passions with the help of neuroscientific technologies and biometry, along with playful surveys in an experiment we’re describing as the ‘fan passion score’. The experiment is made up of several components and delivers completely new impressions of and information about the dedication and the differing mentalities of European fans.”

16 | DUPLO AT DRUPA | QUICK PRINT PRO | June 2012
Duplo’s delight at drupa success Duplo International notched up their 25th DBMi saddle-stitcher sale in what the company is labelling a hugely successful Drupa exhibition. In all, the company took sales worth €3m and more than 2,200 enquiries from 110 countries.
T
he Düssedorf fairground provided the launch pad for several new products from Duplo including a new KB4000 PUR perfect binder and entry-level sheet feeder and bookletmaker. The products add to Duplo’s already burgeoning digital product portfolio that has helped the company position itself as a market leader in this field. Duplo’s UK Digital Finishing and Office Division Manager, Angela Osborne commented, “I’ve lost count of the number of companies I’ve spoken to who have made the litho to digital transition but have neglected to upgrade their finishing at the same time. They’ve come here to put that right and invest in finishing kit designed to handle the very different requirements of digital print.” As well as the new machines, Duplo also gave some clues as to future developments including a technology demonstration of an embossing module for their DC-745 multifunctional finishing system. Osborne continued, “Our DC-series of finishing machines are capable of cutting, slitting, creasing, folding and perforating already. By adding extra modules we continue to increase the flexibility of these quick-changeover finishing devices adding to their appeal to the digital colour market.” Duplo had three DBMi saddle-stitchers on the stand, each in a different configuration. For the litho user it was online to a DC-10/60i collator; for digital users it was online to a DSF-2200 sheet feeder and for printers with both digital and litho engines, there was a hybrid system with both a sheet feeder and collator. According to Angela, it is this kind of progressive, modular solution that is clearly helping Duplo take an increasing slice of the market. She explained, “Despite the overall decline in visitor numbers to the show, we took so many enquiries on the stand because our products are the most relevant to the modern print business. drupa has given us an excellent pipe-line to work on for the next six to nine months.” Duplo is also the UK distributor for Swiss manufacturer Multigraf and German guillotine specialists IDEAL. Multigraf unveiled a new perforating machine which can go online to the recently launched Touchline crease-fold system whilst IDEAL debuted a new entry-level SRA3 guillotine with IR light guards to enable higher productivity. Duplo have confirmed they will be bringing both these machines to the UK market during the latter half of 2012. For more information regarding Duplo UK, please contact Marc Legge, 01932 263 905, marc.legge@duplointernational.com
Noel Tatt Group chooses Duplo DC-745 from Fujifilm at drupa 2012 The Noel Tatt Group, based in Canterbury, used drupa 2012 to place an order for a Duplo DC-745 cutter/creaser from Fujifilm. This order follows a history of successful purchases from Fujifilm in the last four years, including two Xerox 700 digital presses. The company has recently undergone rapid expansion, and drupa offered the perfect opportunity to discuss its next investment, as it looks to raise production levels to meet growing customer demand. Noel Tatt Group offers a comprehensive service in the production and supply of greetings cards to independent retailers and distributors, whilst its sister company, Impress Publishing, supplies greeting cards, leaflets and catalogue fulfilment to charities. John Cox, Studio Design Manager at Noel Tatt, comments, “In the last four years we had invested in two machines from Fujifilm, and growing demand from our customers meant we needed to look at adding further products to our portfolio. Since its launch, we’ve had the Duplo DC-745 in our sights, but as it was so important to ensure that the new machine met our needs, we carefully monitored its progress before making a decision to purchase.” John continues: “Fujifilm and Duplo work closely
together in partnership, and their combined expertise is second to none. When we met with them at drupa it soon became clear that this product and partnership was the right choice and we placed an order for the DC-745. This new machine will allow us, at least, to double our output and consequently we see this investment as a means of increasing our capacity and opening up new business opportunities.” The Duplo DC-745 supersedes the Duplo DC645 and boasts significant upgrades including increased accuracy and speed, perforator (stop perforator) and a faster barcode reader, successfully eliminating any of the issues there may have been with its predecessor, the DC-645. A key feature of the DC-745 is what Duplo refers to as ‘Automated Precision’; delivered through the combination of PC control, integrated image recognition and motorised tooling. Fujifilm Graphic Systems UK and Duplo have been working together for the last two years to provide customers with integrated digital systems to streamline their production processes. Noel Tatt Group is just one example of where the two companies can offer their customers the best of both worlds with advice on both digital presses and finishing solutions. www.fujifilm.co.uk, www.duplouk.co.uk, www.noeltatt.co.uk

drupa – show report in print Hard copy still rules…when it comes to the reporters sprint, QPP managed the 100 metre dash bolting through the most important exhibitors pigeon holed press releases in record time.
A
lthough we were to spend days in the show halls it is refreshing to experience why hard copy beats on-line written content. Selecting what our readers really want from the mass of emails received last month is impossible on screen. Real print is much easier to make a ‘must see hit list’ from and file in priority to go visit. A bit like the best wines on offer at the supermarket, the most popular news had more shelves of which some where running very low. Long live real print and on with the show. drupa 2012 sent out key impulses for the worldwide print and media industry. The most important signal — print has potential and the sector is investing heavily in its future. This trend was already visible at the event’s half-way point and exhibitors reported the conclusion of numerous deals all over the world. This willingness to invest continued unabated in the second half of the trade fair. Add to this the fact that experts specifically highlight the wealth of innovations and market oriented solutions for the entire print spectrum. “drupa was a resounding success for the sector. Numerous business ideas and innovations were showcased that all led to high investment. What the 1,850 exhibitors presented over the two weeks will strengthen the development potential of the print and media industry long term,” says Bernhard Schreier, President of drupa 2012 314,500 visitors from more than 130 countries attended drupa “drupa sent out key impulses in this difficult climate for our sector. This gives us optimism that the backlog in investment on many markets around the world is now gradually being overcome,” says Dr Markus Heering, Managing Director of the Print and Paper Technology Association within the German Engineering Federation VDMA. “Numerous orders were placed during the fair. Both large printing machinery manufacturers and their suppliers posted orders. The number of enquiries also rose continually over the course of the trade fair which is why many exhibitors are now also looking forward to good post-fair business”. The dominating themes at drupa 2012 were automation, packaging printing, digital printing, hybrid technologies, web to print applications and environmentally sound printing. For instance, 40% of visitors said they were interested in digital printing machinery and digital printing systems.
Landa dancers wow with Mimaki printed textiles
Anyone attending drupa 2012 certainly saw the return of Benny Landa and the buzz he created even before the show started with the introduction of nanography. But Landa’s nanographic printing was not the only draw bringing visitors into the auditorium to see the exciting Landa show. Israeli dancers ‘Maria Kong’ created a buzz with their beautiful, colourfully dressed dancers performing ‘The Dance for the Digital Age’.
The dance performance illustrated various historical milestones in printing, from water to the actual nanography being introduced at drupa. All costumes were designed for the show by famous costume designer Miki Avni and printed on Mimaki textile printers. Avni is known for designing artistic clothing using wild and colourful imagination and found that the Mimaki textile printers, known for their quality and colour fidelity, gave expression to all of her artistic desires.
High quality textile print Zohar Eshel–Acco, CEO of Maria Kong, founded in 2008, praised the quality of the textile print produced on the Mimaki systems, saying, “Beautiful vibrant colours can be produced that don’t fade when washed. The fabrics are more durable, a definite requirement for our dancing costumes, especially in this performance where it is important to bring lively designs that complement our dancing act as well as the message Benny Landa is bringing to the market with the introduction of nanographic printing. Mimaki textile printers can print on various kinds of fabrics, giving Miki the freedom to create colourful and vibrant costumes that really add value to our artistic performance.” Mike Horsten from Mimaki adds, “We are extremely proud to have been able to support the Landa show with optimally printed fabrics and are happy that we can make a contribution to this wonderful show.” The dance performance was initially designed to be a warm-up for the audience while they were entering the auditorium for the Landa show. However, news about these exquisite dancers travelled fast around drupa, and many attendees arrived early to see the dance performance. Horsten comments, “It’s been a big hit at drupa, and many are comparing their performance with a Cirque du Soleil act. We like to think the vibrancy of the fabrics used in their costumes contributed at least a small part to the overall success of both the dance act and the draw to the Landa show.”
Mimaki textile printers Mimaki’s textile printer range includes the world’s fastest dye sublimation printer, capable of printing at 150 square metres per hour on transfer paper and direct to pre-treated polyester fabrics without the need for an interim transfer paper step with no compromise in quality. Mimaki’s unique sublimation ink delivers brilliant colours, whether printing on transfer paper or direct to textile, broadening the range of possibilities for both textile printers and their designer clients. In addition to polyester printing, Mimaki’s range of textile solutions includes printers and inks capable of printing to natural fabrics such as silk and cotton The full range can be found by visiting Mimaki’s exclusive UK & Irish distributors’ website www.hybridservices.co.uk/textile
UCHIDA
Tony Hills of UMG reports on Uchida success: “Having recently returned from a very exciting drupa, I thought I would update you on some of the news and results from the Uchida Stand. Sharing a Hall with Xerox, Konica, Fuji, Esko and Morgana meant visitor figures were heavy. There was a particularly strong presence from India and America and dealer and distributor visits were very strong and in fact Uchida took some massive orders for some of the new products including the Quatro, AeroCut and U-Coater. The U-Coater was one of the biggest stars averaging around 60-80 demonstrations a day with the new Plug-in to the Quatro following up not far behind. So here is a look at some of the new products…a fuller report will follow later.” 17

Konica Minolta’s customercentric approach
Generating new business by changing the way we do business is the approach adopted by Konica Minolta Business Solutions. Embracing this customer-centric approach, Konica Minolta launched Digital 1234 at drupa 2012. This comprehensive concept focuses on the customers’ business needs. New applications and services, like the cloud based system Printgroove JT Web 5 GO, have been specially created to meet customers’ needs. Quality, price and service are no longer a guarantee of good business in the printing market. But what are today’s new business growth strategies? Faced by the challenges of commercial printers and printing service providers in the market, Konica Minolta Business Solutions sees the customer-centric approach as key. In this regard, the company provides support with
consultancy concepts and services. In keeping with this strategy, Konica Minolta has created Digital 1234, a business building programme designed for simplicity. The four step process encourages businesses to take an opportunity based approach to start driving business. Using four practical steps, the customer is guided and coached on how to identify, assess, justify and implement new business opportunities. “The key question is ‘How can we aid your business today?’ Besides consultancy concepts, applications like Web2Print software are the perfect business enabler. Up to 34 per cent of customers intend to buy these kinds of solutions,” says Mark Hinder Production Print Market Development Manager for Konica Minolta Business Solutions (UK). Due to this demand, Konica Minolta will present the fifth edition of Printgroove JT Web Suite. Consisting of two flexible software modules — Printgroove JT Web 5 and Printgroove JT Man 5 — the new version provides customers with comprehensive make ready, web-2-print and powerful print management functionalities. Furthermore, a new, cloud based system will be introduced, Printgroove JT Web 5 GO. The enhanced version is more user friendly, increases flexibility and efficiency for administrators by allowing the print process to be analysed in detail and improving production planning. New product features and additional modules, such as a function that carries out a pre-flight check of documents, improved price calculation, a variable VAT indication, a multi-shop system and an online payment connector for Ogone, offer further support for printing service providers. Due to the software as a service business model, Printgroove JT Web 5 GO is the perfect business enabler for the Web2Print market. As a hosted application, a print provider who is interested in Printgroove JT Web 5 GO does not require server hardware, IT knowledge or additional personnel to use the solution. Printgroove JT Web 5 GO comes with the same features as Printgroove JT Web 5 and affords printing providers usability through its user interface and flexibility through customisation. Its simple, fast and low cost setup as well as the attractive pay per month model makes Printgroove JT Web 5 GO a great choice, especially for small companies. Konica Minolta will also be presenting their first ink jet press KM1, developed for the commercial printer sector. A preview will be given of a further three digital printing systems with outstanding performance for economical print production and superb quality colour and black and white printing, with the goal to increase business for customers. In a technology showcase, Konica Minolta offers a first look at its pioneering inkjet development “KM1”. Targeting commercial printing environments KM1 supports commercial printers in producing high quality print jobs that are not suitable for offset printing, e.g. due to size, short print runs, extremely tight deadlines, and of course, variable data processing. “KM1 is a joint development of Komori and Konica Minolta. By combining the proprietary technologies of both companies, we are able to create a high value added product that meets the demands of our customers and can appeal to next generation printing industry”, comments Mark Hinder, Production Print Market Development Manager, Konica Minolta Business Solutions (UK). The high speed colour inkjet press processes formats up to size B2 and a speed of 3300 sph (sheets per hour). Thanks to a high resolution of 1200 x 1200 dpi, an outstanding print quality is given. Beyond that, Konica Minolta gave a preview of the bizhub PRESS 1052 and 1250, a black and white print production system, as well as bizhub C1100, a new colour flagship among the Konica Minolta digital presses. Commercial printers, as well as external and internal print providers, benefit from the bizhub PRESS 1052/1250’s impressive performance, superb black and white print quality, and absolute reliability, even for the production of peak volumes — factors that translate into enhanced overall productivity and boost customer satisfaction. Both digital presses are ideal for commercial printers to make a start in digital black and white print production, and pave the way for new business opportunities. Keywords are ‘printing on demand’ and ‘variable data printing’: flexible digital printing facilitates the production of exact required quantities and individualised print products. This saves time, manpower and overall costs by reducing storage space as well as waste from outdated printed information. The presses will be launched in July 2012.
June 2012 | QUICK PRINT PRO | drupa | 19

Since its introduction at drupa 2008, the iGen4 Press has been used by more than 1,000 customers to produce millions of profitable pages per month. The iGen4 Press has been recognised to be the most productive system in its class, among those independently tested by the SpencerLab Digital Color Laboratory. Gilmore Doculink – a commercial/digital print shop in Ottawa – has tested the iGen 150 and reports the device is going to be a real win for their operation. “The quality is indistinguishable, so our clients can have a short-run custom digital job produced on the iGen 150 and have it look the same as a longer offset run of 20,000,” said Brian Wright, executive vice president of Operations, Gilmore Doculink. “The iGen 150 provides the colour, quality and consistency we demand.”
Automation = Productivity = More Jobs With increased print speed of up to 25 percent, the 150 pages per minute press delivers 3,000 26 inch oversized sheets per hour – a productivity boost that lets printers get more jobs through their shop. Each page is created with patented image on image technology and matte dry ink for vivid colour digital prints. The iGen 150 Press reduces the time and effort needed to achieve consistent high quality output with the following features: • A new 2,400 x 2,400 dpi imaging system – the most precise resolution available on an iGen system to date. New line screen delivers refined shape, sharp detail and text quality. • An Auto Density Control System detects and corrects streaks before they occur. • Automated Colour Maintenance replaces and eliminates manual steps by analysing colour and notifying the operator when the press is ready for production. The press can handle a range of paper stocks such as textured, translucent and
heavy cover weight papers. Print providers can easily create mixed paper jobs such as direct mail campaigns with tear out reply postcards or wedding albums.
Availability The Xerox iGen 150 Press will be available for order taking in July and installation from later in quarter three 2012. For more information, visit www.xerox.com.
Duplo builds on more success
The four years since drupa 2008 has seen the launch of many new ranges from Duplo, with their kit appearing in such places as Moonpig.com, so it was no surprise that they had a larger stand than in previous years. Drupa saw the introduction of the automated saddle stitching system, the DBMi which will be sold in three different configurations all capable of producing books as small as 75x90mm and up to A4 landscape, with an automatic size change in less than 60 seconds. Duplo also showcased their DC-745 with its integrated folding system, and the third product launch was the KB-4000PUR perfect binder. This model combines the strength of PUR binding with the benefit of hot melt side gluing to enable instant handling. To quote Andy Pike, Duplo’s UK marketing manager “drupa is the Olympic Games of the print industry and we are going for gold!”
Renz at drupa
Renz showcased their new innovative punching and binding solutions for both the offset and digital markets. Renz focus is on automated systems for the production of wire bound calendars and books for all run lengths. They unveilled the new generation of Renz machines, Punch 360 A and Mobi 360, which are designed with flexibility in mind for variable product type and differing run lengths. Renz inline solutions allow fully automated production for both the calendar and book markets, and at drupa visitors were shown how to achieve the maximum productivity and efficiency with Renz solutions. The company also announced that they have added the GMP Protopic II-540 Series Laminator and a new range of guillotines from the long established German manufacturer Mohr to compliment their range. These new machines are the perfect solution for digital print on demand. Please contact Dermot Callaghan 07740 433167 for more information on these exciting developments.

PCP Buy Xerox with Duplo
Precision Colour Printing (PCP), part of the Claverley Group, placed an order for a Xerox Colour 1000 digital press and Duplo booklet making equipment at drupa. This investment will allow the commercial print service provider, which boasts a turnover of £36 million per annum, to establish a digital department on its site in Telford, Shropshire, to compliment its offset magazine and catalogue printing business. Its clients comprise a range of the leading names in the publishing and print management industries, including Future, Haymarket, Ian Allen, Webmart and Bauer Publishing. “Our new digital department will give PCP the ability to take on more short run magazine printing work — something we are seeing more and more requirements for — and will also give us the ability to print any shortfalls in our production runs to the same high quality,” comments Alex Evans, managing director at PCP. “In addition, we will be able to offer a digital printing resource to the rest of the Claverley Group, and will later look to roll it out further to offer a digital printing service to local businesses.” The Colour 1000 Press, a 100 ppm device, utilises low melt, EA (Emulsion Aggregation) dry ink and fusing technology, and has the ability to lay down a fifth clear toner as part of its five printing units. It prints at 2400 x 2400 dpi, while its EA dry ink delivers an offset like finish. Designed with commercial print and in-plant print operations in mind, the clear dry ink allows for images and text to be highlighted for visual impact, or digital watermarks to be applied.
Who said what…
“drupa was my first show in the role of Managing Director for DirectSmile and what a show to start with! It has been a huge success for us. Presenting in the dip provided a great platform to communicate the power of personalised marketing campaigns to visitors and our booth was always busy with printers from around the world who were keen to watch us demonstrate the new features of DirectSmile Cross Media. It was fantastic to meet so many of our customers and hear about their latest, most creative campaigns, as well as speak to numerous people looking to explore the new business opportunities available to them by introducing cross media marketing services. I’d also like to express our gratitude to our worldwide partners and resellers for their support and cooperation during the show.” Harry Raaphorst, Managing Director, DirectSmile “It’s hard to believe drupa 2012 has come to an end already. At Mimaki we’re proud to have been part of this milestone drupa session. For us drupa represented the introduction of JFX500 series, a next generation high-speed UV-LED flatbed inkjet printer, the new JV400-LX, a wide format printer equipped with latex ink, and the new JV400-SUV, an inkjet printer equipped with solvent UV ink. We’ve also received great responses to the new Easy Direct Print System, an automatic misalignment adjustment system for the UJF304 series printers. The drupa revelation was the Landa nanographic printing system. Mimaki proudly contributed to the show’s success. The dancer’s colourful clothes were printed on Mimaki printers - hence the liveliness of the act!” Mike Horsten, Marketing Manager, Mimaki Europe
Roland
Showgoers at drupa saw Roland DG’s new, high-speed, VersaArt RS-640 The new model is aimed at sign shops and volume print providers. It is sixty four inches (163cm) wide and it uses Roland’s eco-solvent inks. It features Roland’s new print head technology, which prints accurately in eight channels for fine colour gradations. In fact the company promise a consistency of colour that is unrivalled in the industry, even in its fastest modes. The other aspect of this new printer that is noteworthy is that it is engineered for long, unattended production runs. The next drupa will be held from 2 to 15 June 2016… Die speisekarte,bitte.1

“drupa 2012 has been an incredible show for HP. We came with transformative innovations and customers responded very positively enabling us to exceed our sales target for the show very early on. We also enjoyed outstanding individual product successes, especially with the new B2 HP Indigo 10000 for which we doubled our sales target. The new HP Indigo 5600 and HP Indigo 7600 also sold in huge numbers, and our labels and packaging presses did very well too. What’s more, our HP Inkjet Web Press Series was very successful at the show, highlighting the continued transformation in publishing and transactional production. Our large format business did extremely well too, with strong sales across all continents for HP Latex products and the new HP Scitex FB7600. As such, drupa 2012 proved itself this year to be a show for all ‘print’ markets where visitors come to do business around commercially available solutions.“ Francois Martin, Worldwide Marketing Director, HP Graphic Solutions Business
“drupa has been an extraordinary show on many fronts - for our industry, our customers and for Kodak. I am very excited about how our customers are embracing change and adding new solutions to create higher value pages for their clients. They have shared with me many examples of how Kodak hybrid products and solutions are the catalyst for this change.” Antonio Perez, Chairman & CEO, Kodak “I imagined that we would have a big impact, but what really overwhelmed me is how customers have responded so amazingly to our message, technology and strategy of partnering with industry leaders. Their response to the opportunity that Landa Nanographic printing brings with its potential to transform mainstream commercial, packaging and publishing markets has been staggering. We have received unprecedented levels of interest and orders (Letters of Intent with deposit) for our family of sheetfed and web presses, with the Landa S10 Nanographic printing press, with its B1 format, the clear winner. Throughout the show, our stand has been packed with visitors and our theatre presentation entitled “Nano. Bigger than you think” has been fully booked days in advance.” Benny Landa, Founder, Chairman & CEO, Landa

Going with the (work)flow Keeping abreast of software developments is a specialist job in itself with potentially expensive consequences. Martin Christie writes…
A
s previewed in the last issue, there are major software launches this year that will have implications for the digital print shop. Adobe have just launched Creative Suite 6, with a whole new bunch of gadgets in the toolbox, and later in the year Microsoft will be trying to convince us that we cannot live without Windows 8. Is there any choice but to go with the flow and accept the costs involved in upgrading and updating. The dilemma for the professional purchaser — who already has plenty of other things he needs to spend money on — is trying to separate the practical value from the marketing hype, and the problem is that the potential benefits or otherwise may be a long time coming. We will be evaluating Adobe’s latest over previous versions in the next few months in order to give you some useful feedback and guidance. Ultimately the preference will depend on how individual print providers operate their bureau. In evolving from the traditional slap-it-on the glass copy shop, we have all had to adapt in various ways to the digital transformation of images and information. For some, the simple opening of files and printing what has been presented may be sufficient. For others the specialist services of image manipulation, colour correction, and all manner of design may now be an essential part of the bureau offering. And of course there are many layers of operation in between. The determining factor is the customer profile, and the consequent level of service expected. And in the average shop this will go from the digitally challenged who refuse to embrace anything electronic, to the expert demanding the highest level of professional performance. Again, the balance is likely to be somewhere in between the extremes, but all bases need to be covered in order to provide the essential service of something the customer can’t do at home. As a busy working print shop in the centre of Brighton, we certainly see both ends of the spectrum, and most of the colours in between. Along with old established users who have been using the basic copy shop for years, we have hi-tech creative design and production companies, and several thousand students within walking distance and carrying the latest laptops their loans can afford. In between we have the standard issue customers who have a computer but very little idea of how to use it properly. All require attention to one degree or another and the critical judgement is the time taken to service the individual job, and what can be charged for it. The latter point is crucial because the price list generally only covers the print production cost not the length of time taken to produce it, and produce it correctly. That is expected to be absorbed in the quoted cost unless there is an obvious exceptional issue. So the task of swiftly inspecting and handling a variety of files is a vital part of the process. In an ideal world digital files would arrive ready to print, just as hard copies did. But the ideal of a universally compatible formula got lost in the rush of competition between the software giants. The Portable Document Format (the PDF) is no longer a simple print file now that it can be produced by a variety of programmes, each with their own default settings for saving and
the possibilities of all manner of confusing and often conflicting information hidden in its body. In an ideal world we would only have needed to swop the platen glass for Acrobat Reader and everything would carry on seamlessly. Unfortunately that ideal is long gone, and the question is just how much software you need to perform daily tasks, and how up to date it needs to be. Once again, your customer base is an important part of the equation. If you are content with a basic studio service, you may not need all the whistles and bells of the very latest software, but there is a bottom line somewhere in the pitch below which it will become increasingly difficult to operate. Even if you are not running a top grade studio service with design capabilities and related talents, and kit, you have to progress with the technology or risk being overtaken by the abilities of your customers. You only have to see how quickly the move from desk based hardware to mobile applications has taken hold to understand how things can move on. Standing still is not an option. The recent mobile revolution has already widened the market for the transmission of images and information, and although most of that transmission is internet based, it also means that potential customers will be able to create some tasks that need printing in situations and at times that would never have been previously possible. And of course if they are mobile they are unlikely to be carrying a printer with them. Several of the inkjet manufacturers realised this quite quickly and added the option of fly-by-wire printing on their machines. But given that often printing to an inkjet when it is on the desk next to you can be quite a trauma – printing to one several miles away has got to be a real shot in the dark. Remote printing certainly is one of the vital futures, but I think most clients will want to have the assurance that there is a competent bureau at the other end of the line to sort the files out, report progress, and possibly deliver. People running their business on the move will be far too busy to pop into the print shop. As long as they have the time to pay the bill, it can all work smoothly. Windows 8 is directed at this new generation of information on the hoof. Its interface is just like a phone app, with touch screen and scroll through icons. It is possible to revert to a more traditional layout, but it defaults to the original view. I can see this being seriously irritating when customers start arriving with their laptops running W8 as many already have problems finding their way round their portable file system. I know improved sophistication is the essential part of progress, but there are times when it would be good to take a little step sideways in the name of common sense. What was so wrong with the old systems that we learned to love, or at least put up with? Well, say the software people, it becomes increasingly costly to maintain older software while at the same time developing new ones. Old programmes, it seems, have a natural electronic life span beyond which it does not become cost effective to maintain them and their life support systems are switched off like some digital euthanasia. The programmes will still run, but without updates or patches, they will become potentially unstable, slow and unsuitable for dealing with modern applications. You can understand the logic, but the time span for this early retirement seems a little brief, considering the cost of the software, and the fact that customers are, in effect, being obliged to upgrade. Car manufacturers, after all, are obliged to retain spares and service on vehicles long after their marketing sell-by date has expired. Perhaps that is just a reflection of how little influence the motor industry has now on those in power, and how powerful is the digital economy. We just accept it as one of those things. Programmes of course are not solid blocks of metal, they will perform differently in different circumstances, and are influenced by the continuous

input of information. They may not wear out like an old car engine, but they will behave erratically and prone to misfire. You have only to have a look at Adobe’s website to see bulletins from their Incident Response Team ( I can’t helping seeing a vision of flak-jacketed geeks rushing into a computer room) to see that even up to date software may have security issues with bugs and things. It was of course purely a coincidence that a security bulletin regarding CS5 and potentially unstable files was issued just days after the launch of CS6 but it gave the conspiracy theorists plenty of scope for jibes at Adobe’s expense. So the reality is whatever you are running now, you will have to upgrade to something at some stage. The trick is knowing what to go for, particularly as, unlike individual users and subsidised students, you may need to look at updating several computers. And that can mean not just the software, but all the associated hardware. All the upgrades that do more things will be hungry on memory and performance, so hard drive space, processors and available RAM are all parts of the equation. So it is worth a good long look at all the implications before making a potentially expensive choice. Here the internet search engines are an invaluable ally as you will always find advice and experience, even if sometimes contradictory, to balance the plush advertising claims of the manufacturers. At least all the facts can be weighed and balanced. Just like shopping in the supermarket it is worth having a good look at all the shelves, not just the products the owner is trying to push on you. There are bargains to be had if you shop around, or pick and mix. We are inevitably considering Adobe products in the main. Corel Draw X5, as previously reviewed here, is an extremely comprehensive package that does most of the things the whole Creative Suite does, and at a cheaper package price. It is well worth a trial and a little perseverance on the part of anyone too familiar with Photoshop and its functions. The workspace may be a little disorientating, but it is compatible with all current Adobe files in both opening
v i v i d.
and saving, and most significantly can identify potential issues in PDFs Inside the Adobe stable, Acrobat Pro is the most useful least promoted piece of software. Once you have worked your way round the tool bar you will find it will do things you thought you could only do in Photoshop or InDesign, particularly in editing text, cropping and inserting files and basic layout. Definitely worth having a look at for general use, leaving the fancy footwork for the creatives. Photoshop is obviously the premium image editing tool, but you don’t necessarily have to have the very latest incarnation. Many photographers can get by with Elements which was a pruned down version, originally supplied free with many cameras and scanners to introduce people to the Adobe family. It’s still a current software option. For photographic editing, particularly handling multiple files, Adobe Lightroom takes a lot of beating. A standalone programme, it only handles RGB files, and doesn’t support layers or open PDFs, but can manage any image including RAW files. Version 1 was a bit basic but 2, 3 and now 4 are all really excellent for sorting colour and crop issues, and can batch process, downsizing files for the internet for example, or upsizing for printing, very rapidly. It can also store print formats and settings, like a contact sheet, which Photoshop abandoned for several seasons and has now brought back for CS6. At the moment CS6 is all very new and it remains to be seen whether it is worth the upgrade from CS5 so we will be monitoring feedback. Certainly CS5 was an improvement in many ways on CS4, generally regarded as having been rushed on the market before some of the bugs were sorted. If you are running early versions of Creative Suite, then the time will come for an upgrade at some stage. The question is not only when but with what. We will try and shed some light in the coming months. Also next month I get a chance to do some more photography and show you how I managed to get a cracking shot of the cat in the yard without it running away....

POLYLINE Pro Range launches in UK
Pyramid Display Materials are launching a unique and exclusive range of environmentally friendly100% recyclable polypropylene products to the UK display market. The POLYLINEPro range includes new products never before seen in the UK developed exclusively in partnership with leading polypropylene manufacturer Mapal. Neil McCarthy, Pyramid’s Head of Sales & Marketing explains the product development programme: “The launch of our POLYLINEPro range is the culmination of over 18 months product development with Mapal. We have been watching the market carefully and felt there was a shift coming from the retail chains away from some of the traditional PVC POS products to materials that could offer a simpler recycling stream with the end game being products actually being made with recycled content. When we stared developing the POLYLINEPro range as well as the environmental drivers we also wanted to create some brand new products to give our customers new applications to sell to the market. Within the range we have the traditional PP products the market currently purchase but we have also developed a range of new products to include: total opaque, large format flat sheet and roll, recycled content up to 100%, a banner and eyelet PP solution as well as a roll up banner PP substrate. We have extensively tested all POLYLINEPro products via large format litho, screen and UV inkjet technologies with excellent results, indeed some of our customers who helped test the products gave us orders immediately after testing which I suppose is the best recommendation we can get!” POLYLINEPro is stocked at Pyramids 3 sales and distribution centres in Manchester, Birmingham and Gateshead. WIN for Kyocera at Green IT Awards
KYOCERA Document Solutions (KYOCERA) was a winner for the third consecutive year at the Green IT Awards ceremony in April. Nominated in five categories, KYOCERA won ‘Environmental Project of the Year over 100 Employees’ for its Managed Document Services activity with insurance giant RSA and was runner-up in the categories for Manufacturer of the Year and Green IT Magazine’s Company of the Year. Tracey Rawling Church, Director of Brand & Reputation, KYOCERA Document Solutions said: “We’re delighted to have won a Green IT Award for the third year running. Only one other company has achieved three consecutive wins, so we consider it a significant achievement. The awards mean a great deal to us as the results are a combination of the judges’ deliberations and votes from Green IT Magazine’s readership. It’s great to be involved with such an inspiring event and we were gratified to have our work in sustainability recognised with three separate awards on the evening.”
KYOCERA Document Solutions partnered with RSA’s chosen Technology Project Management Partner Accenture who was selected to manage the end to end project from Business Case through to Service Transition. Accenture’s methodology aimed to create an agile infrastructure that is manageable, cost effective and minimally disruptive to on-going business operations and Accenture expected its partners to do the same. This ensured that the client benefited from a measurably more cost effective, secure and responsive infrastructure that scaled and adapted to their business and environmental needs. Sivaraja Sivanesan of Accenture said: “The quality of project services at KYOCERA was very high from the engineers, logistics team and project management. We went through an extensive tendering exercise with RSA and KYOCERA came out near top in most aspects, but the key differentiators were the people and product.” Called Simplifying Print through Enhancement and Consolidation (SPEC), KYOCERA’s project rationalised the insurance giant’s print estate, improving productivity by efficiently deploying hardware, reducing consumables waste, lowering energy consumption by 55% and delivering estimated cost savings of GBP 400,000 within 12 months. Based on KYOCERA’s Managed Document Solutions (MDS), the company’s Project SPEC activity optimised RSA’s entire document output process — from capturing to archiving, workflows to security and environmental impact. Kyocera’s entry for the award documented the actual reductions achieved in energy use and paper consumption using data drawn from the management intelligence software that forms the basis for the managed service. James De Watteville, CIO at RSA said: “The cost, productivity and environmental benefits have met or exceeded all of our expectations. We are now at the stage where we can look beyond the initial deployment to identify other print related efficiency opportunities, such as expanding the deployment to include home based workers and mainframe printing. Our spend on printing over the next five years will shrink from GBP7.5million to GBP2.5million and our focus now is to work with KYOCERA to continue optimising the system to ensure that cost savings and efficiency gains continue. The Green IT Awards 2013 will be launched in May. For more details please visit: www.greenitawards.com. For more details on KYOCERA Document Solutions please visit www.kyoceradocumentsolutions.co.uk
WWF LISTS ARJOWIGGINS GRAPHIC PAPER
Arjowiggins Graphic has topped the table for fine papers in the second WWF Environmental Paper Company Index. This year, the index rated 19 global paper manufacturers on their ecological footprint, covering the fine paper, tissue and packaging sectors. Arjowiggins Graphic recorded the best results in the fine paper sector with a score of 73.86%, and was also included in the tissue results. Jean Charles Monange, Sales and Marketing Director at Arjowiggins Graphic, says: “It is excellent to see that Arjowiggins Graphic has achieved class leading score. This confirms the importance of leadership in the usage of recycled fibre for graphic papers as part of an economically successful sustainability strategy.” The index identifies a company’s impact on forest ecosystems from fibre sourcing, its emissions from manufacturing processes and corporate transparency. The results offer independent analysis of the paper industry that can help businesses to make an informed purchasing decision. Paper is a renewable, recyclable material, with a potentially lower footprint than substitute materials, if managed responsibly. However, as the sector expands its impacts become more serious and could leave an unacceptably large ecological footprint on the planet. That is unless the industry makes significant improvements. The index helps to galvanise the efforts of companies that are actively reducing these impacts — setting the standards for other companies to strive towards. Rod Taylor, Director of WWF’s Global Forest Programme, said: “WWF encourages buyers of paper, shareholders and investors to minimise their environmental risks by responding positively to the transparency and examples of improved performance shown by producers participating in the WWF Environmental Paper Company Index.” www.recycled-papers.co.uk

Opus Pocus – INSTANT PROFIT
Thesis bookbinding is big business and I can’t believe how much our own shop has been missing out on. OK we do have waves of students wanting four years of study printed and bound to be handed in one hour ago. This end of term rush could be lucrative if you could do the work while the normal jobs are running but in practice your attention has to be undivided as even the design students files don’t print without a lot of rejigging. Now revenge can be sweet, and still in line with our student friendly manner. We can all offer more of a choice in the presentation of the final piece of work. Normal binding will suffice for the headless chicken dissertation days where apart from the pressure, all work gets completed and the queues do die down eventually. The new service of a bespoke gold foil cover and maybe spine too can be very lucrative as the quality is so high. A personalised cover is so important as a prestigious front will set you up for the chapters of study within. Many students, maybe using Daddy’s charge card, are asking these days for a memorial record of their 3/4 years hard graft. Depending on the number of contributors who have sponsored their ordeal will determine the print run. The one off charge needs to cover your costs and some, but when multiple copies are required and the set up already costed the run on two or three volumes is where the icing is put on your cake. The going rate, which all should adhere to is £3 per line for setting and printing gold foil on the book covers. Younger pupils yearbooks are also a great market worth going back to school for. Don’t advertise this at £35 per bind even though with personalisation this often will add up to that, times a run of on average of four. Yes souvenirs of an important chapter of a student’s life is more than an hour in a gown and throwing your mortarboard in the air. SAS FROM AMARI
Self Adhesive Supplies (SAS), part of the Amari Plastics family has announced an extension to the product offering it carries in its portfolio. SAS has traditionally offered the market leading brand of 3M adhesives and adhesive tapes and has become one of the most significant distributors of these ranges in the UK today. A key component in the success of SAS has been the sales of double sided self adhesives such as 3M‘s 467MP and 468MP, acrylic based adhesives tapes, sold in sheets and used extensively in conjunction with Polycarbonate films for membrane switches and the nameplate industry. To compliment this SAS are delighted to add the Polylite range of Polycarbonate films to their stock offering. Manufactured in Asia on state of the art machinery by a division of the former leading distributor of Lexan Polycarbonate films in South East Asia, Polylite is now established with many of the leading manufacturing brands and is a development partner of 3M in Asia. Polylite is manufactured to the tightest specifications and controls and as a result the sheets are consistently of the highest possible quality making them easy to both screen or digitally print. The product is available in sheet sizes 610 x 915mm or 915 x 1220mm or on 1220mm wide reels from 125 micron to 1mm. It is stocked in 2 grades – Velvet /Matt or Gloss/ Gloss, however other grades such as Matt/Gloss or Gloss/Velvet are also available along with speciality grades such as flame retardant or black flame. Fiona Hughes, Manager of SAS, commented “Polylite Polycarbonate sheets have been extensively trialled both by our staff in the UK and at our sister company in the USA. The results have been hugely encouraging and customer feedback has reported that the sheets have performed better than other sheets that have been available in the market for a long time. Once we had established the quality and consistency of the product we had no hesitation in putting the sheets in to stock and offering them to our customer base”. Phil Cradock, Quality Manager for SAS said, “SAS has always sold quality products and worked with world leading, brand manufacturers and the Polylite product continues with that trend. The sales team are highly motivated to make a success of the new range and this is aided by our parent company, Amari Plastics, as we are able to draw on their stock ranges of complimentary, quality branded products such as Staufen Rigid PVC, ViPrint Graphic Polypropylene sheets and MACtac self adhesive vinyl sheets to offer a complete range of products required by the screen printer and digital printer alike”. Doro Tape’s Digital Wallpaper does the Business for Pendle Signs
Pendle Signs and Plastics Limited were nominated by Lend Lease as the signage contractor for the ‘Building Schools for the Future’ projects in the Burnley and Pendle Area. Over the last three years they have proposed, designed and produced internal and external signage schemes to suit several individual sites. These sites included several of the newly built and prestigious ‘Super Schools’ including Pendle Vale, Sir John Thursby, and Hameldon Community College. As Michael Meachin of Pendle Signs recalls, ‘On numerous projects we were given the task of recommending to the school an ingenious way of displaying their students own artwork in the most dramatic, eye catching and durable way possible. We proposed the textured wallpaper from Doro Tapes Dorodigital range. One of the key reasons for choosing this product was the brightness of the media, as it enhanced the vivid colours we were printing. It gave an excellent representation of certain elements of the student’s artwork, which was scanned and manipulated. The wallpaper could be simply applied like normal wallpaper; was hard wearing and gave the longevity that the client required’. The Super Schools wallpaper projects have proved very successful for Pendle Signs and has since generated more work of a similar nature through recommendations, referrals and by seeing first hand the huge visual impact it emits. www.dorotape.co.uk
QPP Exclusive: New trade service You too can start selling wallpaper. Thanks to Michael at Pendle Signs we can all now offer bespoke wall coverings at very attractive pricing. Good for end users and very nice profit margin covered for us to sell at £39-£95per sq. mtr. To the QPP trade £25. This is based on print ready artwork, and accurate sizes of area to cover, plus P + P to the shop. An instruction sheet would be included giving overlap details and the trim dimensions etc. Some of the photos also show large format digi-print on vinyl, laminated onto 3mm foam board, as some customers have a requirement to cover rough walls, price on application, but would be below the £40/sq. mtr +vat. Why not invest in a sample showpiece for one of your shop walls. No need for any new service introduction as your customers will want one. Goin’ Large? Time to tender
At last, an accreditation scheme making it easier for you to tender for additional work without the need to jump through uneccesary hoops and government red tape. Peter Foulkes airs his frustration and offers a solution.
H
ave you ever tried to complete a government or large corporate tender to enable you to quote for the supply of printing? We found this a very frustrating process and over complicated to the extreme. There are just too many boxes to tick and hurdles to jump. Fair enough to check if we are insured and have business ethics worthy of becoming a supplier. But, when it comes to certification in the most obvious of processes do we really have to conform to another body of examiners just adding to our production costs and ultimately the esteemed clients invoice. Not having the time, patience, resources or even the will power to take a few years out to get accreditation, I am sure the print farmer/print management company that can tender in their sleep will win the business anyway. Of course then the real quoting starts, as these experts in winning contracts often don’t actually print themselves. No. It is far better to get us lot in a Dutch auction fighting over some work to keep our staff and machinery employed. The profit in print is being drained by those that do the industry no good at all. They don’t employ anyone and don’t buy any kit. So how can we compete on a level playing field, what are our unique strengths? When it comes to most application forms the request for compliance with certain acronymic agencies, ISO, BS etc. there is often a glimmer of common sense in the form of a similar recognised industry standard accreditation. Brilliant we can all sign up to some sensible standards and put some real value into dealing with an actual local real life printer. One thing we can all help each other with is our ‘Disaster Recovery Process. Working together our back up service of a national network of 6000+ quick printers means we can deliver on time anywhere in the UK. Come storm, theft, fire, flood even combined with machine and people breakdown, we can email your customers files and keep those presses running. Another box to tick is our green credentials and we can all sign up to a joint declaration of carbon conscious practice. Sharing best practice here will get us to a statement to publish fastest. So don’t be shy and get your ideas into the melting pot. Have a quick surf around to capture the best bits of someone else’s bragging rights, not necessarily from this industry as real high standards can be over and above specifics. Cruel cover story A couple is dressed and ready to go out for the evening. They phone for a cab, turn on a night light, cover their pet parakeet and put the cat out in the back yard. The taxi arrives, and they open the front door to leave. Suddenly the cat they put out scoots back into the house. They don’t want the cat shut in there because she always tries to eat the bird. The wife goes out to the taxi while the husband goes back in. The cat runs upstairs, with the man in hot pursuit. The wife doesn’t want the driver to know the house will be empty. She explains to the taxi driver that her husband will be out soon. “He’s just going upstairs to say goodbye to my mother.” A few minutes later the husband gets into the cab. “Sorry I took so long,” he says, as they drive away. “Stupid hag was hiding under the bed. Had to poke her with a coat hanger to get her to come out! Then I had to wrap her in a blanket to keep her from scratching me. But it worked. I hauled her fat butt downstairs and threw her out into the back yard! The cab driver hit a parked car.
Giving out stick Two Musicians’ in a major symphonic orchestra were discussing who they thought the LEAST talented musician in the band was. One of them said; that’s easy. See that guy standing in the back? Well, we just put two sticks in his hands and we call him a Drummer. The other responded; well, if we take one stick away, we call him a Conductor!
Quick Print Joker I changed my iPod’s name to Titanic. It’s syncing now. I know a guy who’s addicted to brake fluid. He says he can stop any time. How does Moses make his tea? Hebrews it. I did a theatrical performance about puns. It was a play on words. They told me I had type-A blood, but it was a Type-O. Why were the Indians here first? They had reservations. We are going on a class trip to the Coca-Cola factory. I hope there’s no pop quiz. I didn’t like my beard at first. Then it grew on me. I tried to catch some fog, but I mist. What do you call a dinosaur with an extensive vocabulary? A thesaurus. I used to be a banker, but then I lost interest.
I dropped out of communism class because of lousy Marx. Haunted French pancakes give me the crepes. A cartoonist was found dead in his home. Details are sketchy Venison for dinner again? Oh deer! The earthquake in Washington obviously was the government’s fault.
Doh… Directory Enquiries 1. Caller: ‘I’d like the number of the Argoed Fish Bar in Cardiff, please’. Operator: ‘I’m sorry; there’s no listing. Is the spelling correct?’ Caller: ‘Well, it used to be called the Bargoed Fish Bar but the ‘B’ fell off’!! 2. Then there was the caller who asked for a knitwear company in Woven. Operator: ‘Woven? Are you sure?’ Caller: ‘Yes. That’s what it says on the label - Woven in Scotland’. 3. Caller: ‘I’d like the RSPCA please’. Operator: ‘Where are you calling from?’ Caller: ‘The living room’. 4. On another occasion, a man making heavy breathing sounds from a phone box told a worried operator: ‘I haven’t got a pen, so I’m steaming up the window to write the number on’.
More Bunny Once upon a time, in a nice little forest, there lived an orphaned bunny and an orphaned snake. By a surprising coincidence, both were blind from birth. One day, the bunny was hopping through the forest, and the snake was slithering through the forest, when the bunny tripped over the snake and fell down. This, of course, knocked the snake about quite a bit. ‘Oh, my,’ said the bunny, ‘I’m terribly sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you. I’ve been blind since birth, so, I can’t see where I’m going. In fact, since I’m also an orphan, I don’t even know what I am.’ ‘It’s quite OK,’ replied the snake. ‘Actually, my story is much the same as yours. I, too, have been blind since birth, and also never knew my mother. Tell you what, maybe I could slither all over you, and work out what you are, so at least you’ll have that going for you…’ ‘Oh, that would be wonderful’ replied the bunny. So the snake slithered all over the bunny, and said, ‘Well, you’re covered with soft fur! you have really long ears; your nose twitches; and you have a soft cottony tail. I’d say that you must be a bunny rabbit.’ ‘Oh, thank you! Thank you,’ cried the bunny, in obvious excitement. The bunny suggested to the snake, ‘Maybe I could feel you all over with
my paw, and help you the same way that you’ve helped me.’ So the bunny felt the snake all over, and remarked, ‘Well, you’re smooth and slippery, and you have a forked tongue, no backbone and no balls. I’d say you must be a copier salesman or digital press equipment advisor.

Doormat director The boss was concerned that his employees weren’t giving him enough respect, so he tried an old fashioned method of persuasion: He brought in a sign that said, “I’m the Boss” and taped it to his door. After lunch, he noticed someone had taped another note under his. “Your wife called. She wants her sign back!”
Kids Rule A little girl came home from school and said to her mother, “Mommy, today in school I was punished for something that I didn’t do.” The mother exclaimed, “But that’s terrible! I’m going to have a talk with your teacher about this … by the way, what was it that you didn’t do?” The little girl replied, “My homework.”
High Jump Little Johnny was at football practice one day and the coach said “Who here thinks they can jump higher than the goal posts” Immediately little Johnny said, “Ooh me sir me” The coach then said, “But Johnny you are the worst in the team!” Then Johnny said, “I know, but goalposts can’t jump!”
Fare Game An elderly man and woman, both in their 70s, walk into a sex therapist’s office. The doctor asks, ‘What can I do for you?’ The man says, ‘Will you watch us have sexual intercourse?’ The doctor raises both eyebrows, but he is so amazed that such an elderly couple is asking for sexual advice, that he agrees. When the couple finishes, the doctor says, ‘There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the way you have intercourse.’ He thanks them for coming, wishes them good luck, charges them £50, and says goodbye. A week later the couple returns and asks the sex therapist to watch again. The sex therapist is a bit puzzled, but agrees. This happens several weeks in a row. The couple makes an appointment, has intercourse with no problems, pays the doctor, then leave. Finally, after 3 months of this routine, the doctor says, ‘I’m sorry, but I have to ask. Just what are you trying to find out?’ The man says, ‘We’re not trying to find out anything. She’s married and we can’t go to her house. I’m married and we can’t go to my house. The Holiday Inn charges £98. The Hilton charges £139. We do it here for £50, and I get £43 back from BUPA.
Partnership pointers For thousands of years, men have tried to understand the rules when dealing with women. Finally, this merit/demerit guide will help you to understand just how it works. Remember, in the world of romance, one single rule applies: Make the woman happy. Do something she likes, and you get points. Do something she dislikes and points are subtracted. You don’t get any points for doing something she expects. Here is a guide to the points system: SIMPLE DUTIES You make the bed … +1. You make the bed, but forget to add the decorative pillows…0. One day a boy asked his grandpa,
A man was walking along a California beach and was in deep prayer to the Lord. He said, ‘Lord, you have promised to give me the desires of my heart. That’s what I am asking you for right now. Please give me a confirmation that you will grant my wish.’
Suddenly the sky clouded up over his head and the Lord in a booming voice spoke to him. ‘I have searched your heart and determined it to be pure. The last time I issued a blank wish request it was to Solomon. He didn’t disappoint me with his request for wisdom. I think I can trust that you won’t disappoint me either. Because you have been faithful to me in all ways, I will grant you one wish you ask for.’ The man sat and thought about it for a while and said, ‘I’ve always wanted to go to Hawaii, but I’m deadly afraid of flying and I get very seasick on boats. Could you build a bridge to Hawaii, so I can drive over there to visit whenever I want?’ The Lord laughed and said, ‘That’s impossible! Think of the logistics of that! How would the supports ever reach the bottom of the Pacific? Think of how much concrete…how much steel!!! Your request is very materialistic, a little disappointing. I could do it, but it’s hard for me to justify you craving for worldly things. Take a little more time and think of another wish, a wish you think would honour and glorify Me as well.’ The man thought about it for a long while and tried to think of a really good wish. Finally, he said, ‘Here’s the deal, Lord. I’ve been married and divorced four times. My wives always said that I don’t care and that I’m insensitive. So I wish that I could understand women…I want to know how they feel inside and what they’re thinking when they give me the silent treatment… I want to know why they’re crying… I want to know what they really mean when they say ‘nothing’… I want to know how to make them truly happy… That’s the wish that I want, Lord.’ Then after a few minutes, God said, ‘you want two lanes or four on that bridge?

HOW SMART IS YOUR RIGHT FOOT? You have to try this please, it takes 2 seconds. We could not believe this! It is from an orthopaedic surgeon that uses our copy shop. This will confuse your mind and you will keep trying over and over again to see if you can outsmart your foot, but you can’t. It is pre-programmed in your brain! 1. While sitting at your desk in front of your computer, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles. 2. Now, while doing this, draw the number ‘6’ in the air with your right hand. Your foot will change direction. I told you so! And there’s nothing you can do about it! You and I both know how stupid it is, but before the day is done you are going to try it again, if you’ve not already done so. Tell your friends to frustrate them too.

The Ice Cream Man Carlos the ice-cream man’s van is parked at the side of the road, lights flashing, music playing, a big queue of excited kids stretches down the street. But there’s no sign of Carlos. A copper walking down the road wonders what is going on. ‘Where is Carlos? Why is he not dishing out the ice-cream?’ He goes over to the van and peers over the high counter. On the floor he spots Carlos. He’s lying very still covered in chocolate sauce, strawberry sauce, nuts, hundreds and thousands and those little jelly bits. ‘Get back kids,’ he shouts. Moving away so the bemused kids cannot overhear him he gets on the radio to the station. ‘Sarge get someone down here quick,’ he stutters, ‘It’s Carlos the ice-cream man…’ …’He’s topped himself.
UEFA Champions League Cup Final John received a free ticket to the final in Germany. Unfortunately John’s seat was in the last row in the corner of the stadium. He noticed an empty seat 10 rows up from the half way line. He decides to make his way to the empty seat. As he sits down he asks the man next to him if anyone is sitting there. The man told him no, it was empty. John is very excited to have a seat like this to see Chelsea at a European final and asks why in the world no one is using it? The man replied that it was his wife’s seat but she passed away. He said this was the first Chelsea cup final that they have not attended together since they were married in 1968. John said that it was really sad and asked if he couldn’t find someone, a relative or a close friend to take the seat? “No” replied the man, “They’re all at her funeral!”
