Neopost Save Money on Postage Since April 2008 the price of a First Class stamp has increased by 67% and a second class stamp by 85%. As a comparison over the same period the price of a litre of unleaded petrol has risen by 30%, from 108p in April 2008 to 139p in March 2013. Such a big increase in the cost of a stamp is a blow for small businesses already struggling to control costs and maintain profitability in a flat economy. Bison Print invest in new guillotine Bison Print has recently taken delivery of a brand new Ideal 5222 Digicut guillotine (supplied by Presco UK) at their HQ in the heart of Maidstone, Kent town centre. “We’re really impressed with the increase in productivity and improved quality that we have gained from the guillotine” says Mark Bidewell, Managing Director at Bison Print. “The previous guillotine was really good but we found that work was often getting bottle necked at the finishing stage which triggered this investment”. Mark claims that the guillotine has almost doubled their productivity Bison had originally ordered Ideal’s new released 4860 and were to be one of the first to own one. However, one of Bison’s stipulations was that the guillotine was modified so that it had side tables which would provide more space to work efficiently. Unfortunately it turned out that the 4860 could not be modified so at the eleventh hour Bison and Presco negotiated a deal on the bigger model. “Although the 5222 was a lot more money it turned out to be a blessing in disguise as we are already benefitting from the extra cutting space and foot clamping facility the 5222 has” This is the second Ideal guillotine Bison Print has had. The previous was an Ideal 4850-EP which they had owned from new and worked hard for

HP LFP Technologies on show at FESPA HP has announced its record breaking, long run production of personalised labels on HP Indigo WS6000 series digital presses for Coca-Cola’s biggest ever personalised brand campaign. The campaign, Share a Coca-Cola, was launched across Europe on 1st May. The campaign is designed to help Coca-Cola engage directly with its consumers in 32 countries. It substitutes the iconic Coca-Cola logo on bottles of Coca-Cola, CocaCola light and Coca-Cola Zero with 150 of the most popular first names, nicknames and terms of affection in each country. Supported by a fully integrated marketing programme to connect consumers online, the campaign reinforces Coca-Cola’s position as an innovator within the consumer retail space. The project combined conventional printing technology with HP Indigo Digital Printing to create 800 million high quality personalised labels. “Packaging plays a critical role in the Share a Coca-Cola campaign because it connects the physical bottle with online communication channels, including social media and user generated content sites,” said Marit Kroon, marketing manager, Europe, Coca-Cola. “The ability to personalise such a high volume of labels with HP Indigo Digital Presses, while achieving the quality and consistency that Coca-Cola requires, opens up new possibilities for creative campaigns moving forward.” The project was led by Peter Overbeek from ESHUIS, a label converter based in Dalfsen, Netherlands. It consisted of eight label converters across Europe who coordinated production of the personalised labels on 12 HP Indigo WS6000 series Digital Presses. The presses ran 24 hours per day for approximately three months to produce almost 800 million labels, the largest job on record for the HP Indigo WS6000 series Digital Presses. “During the months of continuous printing, the HP Indigo WS6000 series Digital Presses have proven to be exceptionally reliable, achieving record productivity and press uptime of 86 per cent,” said Peter Overbeek, managing director, ESHUIS. “With such a strong European network of PSPs using HP Indigo digital presses, the opportunities for brand owners like Coca-Cola are endless.” The static content on the labels for this project was first printed

conventionally on a 38-micron BOPP wraparound material and then personalised with the names using HP Indigo WS6000 series Digital Presses. All of the HP Indigo Digital Presses used for this project were set to the same configuration and settings for complete alignment and consistency during production. Additionally, to ensure the Coca-Cola brand colour was maintained across all machines, HP Indigo formulated the Coca-Cola Red Ink. This ink served as the benchmark for all of the conventional and digital printing for the Share a Coca-Cola campaign. It also will serve as the reference colour for Coca-Cola in the future. Along with the physical Coca-Cola packages, the portal www.shareacocacola.com provides a platform for consumers to experience the Share a Coca-Cola campaign virtually with friends and family across the world. Consumers can use the website to create and personalise virtual cans to send to Facebook friends. Hope Technology bolsters marketing with new Mimaki Hope Technology — the Barnoldswick based manufacturer of high end bicycle components — put its recent decision to invest in a wide format Mimaki inkjet printer/cutter down to a desire to replicate its production efficiencies within its print department. With around 100 staff employed across its highly focussed operation, the company has been a proud supplier to the cycling industry since the late 1980s. Marketing manager, Alan Weatherill has been with Hope since the very beginning and with ultimate responsibility of how his brand is portrayed in bike shops and at events around the country. The quality of output from his department’s new printer was a key factor in his decision to change brands with the new investment. “We need to show the Hope brand off at its best,” he says. “I’m responsible for producing prints that will be seen in thousands of cycle shops around the country so it’s important they’re an accurate reflection of the brand.” Alan is quick to point out where his company’s strength do (and don’t) lie. “We’re not a print company!” he asserts, “so ease of use was important too.” Referencing the minimal maintenance required on the Mimaki CJV30, he also recognises that a varied demand for output combined with the productivity of the printer/ cutter means they’re not running the machine all day, every day. “We needed a machine that was reliable, had low maintenance requirements and that we could use when we needed to.” Hope invested in its Mimaki CJV30 from Granthams Graphic Technology — a long standing supplier to the company, who,

according to Alan, easily convinced them it was the right move. “Our old printer/cutter couldn’t accurately produce long runs of decals, but the demo we had with Granthams ensured we were confident about making them ourselves.” So cost effective is the process that the company has now ceased to screen print its stickers, preferring to mirror its low product inventory with a minimum amount of marketing collateral held in stock too. “Our dealers — who are primarily independent bike shops — can request any form of marketing resource from us,” he says. “Hope’s premium ‘Tech Shop’ dealers get even more support and we’re now supplying personalised Hope collateral for them to use in their stores to promote our product ranges.” That customer list extends to some 1200 accounts in the UK alone and with export making up around 60% of the company’s business, it’s a considerable number of shops to look after, but it doesn’t stop there. The burgeoning cycle industry now includes many races and events and Hope’s consistent presence at these requires branding to be produced too. “We tailor our support for particular events, but the collateral is usually in the form of banners and signage that’s created in-house on the Mimaki,” Alan confirms. Even as a champion of communication for the company, Alan Weatherill has one admission to make; “Our dealers don’t realise how easy it is produce our own printed output!” The next task for his team is reprinting the many beautifully shot photographs that adorn the corridors and the enthralling museum that houses showcases

of its current and former products, memorabilia and on-loan race bikes from the many pro riders the company has sponsored over the years. “Window stickers for one of our dealers, personalised bike wash banners for Mountain Mayhem, perfectly cut out slat-wall branding for a Tech Shop or a shot of one of the Hope Factory Racing riders out in the hills — we’ll run it all on the Mimaki,” concludes Alan. Antalis set to inspire visitors at FESPA

The Printing Charity appoints Gesa Brinkmann

Gesa Brinkmann CPA, ACA has been elected as a Trustee by The Printing Charity with immediate effect. She has also been appointed as a member of the charity’s Investment Committee. She began her career at KPMG, with postings to Berlin, Moscow and London offices. She joined Pearson Plc’s Financial Reporting team in London in 2005 and in 2008 was appointed its International Controller EMEA based in London. She left Pearson in late 2012 to join Astra Zeneca as the EMEA Financial Controller for its Global

Commercial Organisation. A qualified accountant with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales, Gesa holds the equivalent of a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics (Honours) and Slavic Languages (Honours) and the equivalent of a Master’s Degree in Economics (Honours). New Ricoh Pro C5110S and C5100S

Ricoh is adding two new models — the Ricoh Pro C5110S and Ricoh Pro C5100S digital colour cut sheet production systems — to its market leading portfolio of production printing solutions. The light production models are a versatile choice for print rooms (CRDs) seeking high quality in-house print capability, or digital and quick printers. Reaching output speeds up to 80ppm (Ricoh Pro C5110S) and 65ppm (Ricoh Pro C5100S) they are ideal for the production of on demand prestigious marketing material, collateral or client mailings. Both models also feature a new toner formulation and broad media handling. In addition, the small footprint makes them ideal where space is limited. “The new additions join the Ricoh Pro C901 Graphic Arts +, Pro C751 and Pro C651 digital colour production systems, providing a new choice for those seeking a flexible, reliable and affordable solution to generate professional output every time,” says Graham Moore, Ricoh’s Director, Business Development, Production Printing Group, EMEA. With Ricoh’s newly developed toner formulation, it has increased its colour gamut by 10 per cent for the Pro C5110S and Pro C5100S. The toner has also been developed to fuse at a lower temperature, meeting Ricoh’s R&D focus to continually reduce the environmental impacts of its products wherever possible. This in turn also ensures a quicker warm up time for increased productivity. The Pro C5110S and Pro C5100S are also the first Ricoh digital production

printers to feature enhanced toner transfer technology which delivers high quality print results on heavily textured stock – ideal for direct mail and marketing applications. Media flexibility is a hallmark of the two new models, with a new fuser assembly which uses information from the media library to optimise the fuser temperature and pressure combination for each substrate. This technology is ideal for printing challenging applications such as envelopes, where the balance of pressure and heat is critical to maintain a flat and perfectly printed product. “The ability to print directly onto envelopes with a light production digital colour press in the price range of these systems is a significant customer advantage,” says Moore. Media flexibility is highlighted further by the ability to print banners up to 1260mm in length through the advanced settings, adding to the wide range of applications options. The Pro 5110S and Pro C5100S will seamlessly integrate with the Ricoh TotalFlow software portfolio. They also incorporate a number of leading technologies developed for the flagship Pro C901 Graphic Arts +. Among them is the new FS100 platform from EFI Fiery, which is used for the new E42B server. It delivers professional colour management and a fast ripping speed for improved productivity as well as an enhanced Media Library for the storage and recall of a wide range of substrates. Client flexibility is enhanced with a wide range of compatible finishing options such as folding, booklet making and punching. This includes the Ricoh SR4100 Booklet Finisher with a new square fold capability. Ricoh has also ensured the new systems are optimised for productivity and improved uptime. LED indicators and synchronised animated instructions act as a helpful guide for operators should they need to intervene during a print run. In addition there is a variety of status lights to keep the operator continually informed. These new systems also have a number of Operator Replaceable Units, enabling clients to make necessary replacements quickly in-house. SSE Worldwide to launch Eagle printers SSE Worldwide will launch the Eagle range of highly versatile, small format, UV LED flatbed inkjet printers onto the UK market at FESPA 2013 in London next month. Xeikon introduces unique Alpine fuser drum High quality digital carton printing on a wide range of materials is now within reach thanks to new technology from Xeikon. The innovator in digital color printing has developed a unique fuser drum called Alpine, which has a flexible outer layer to help to produce smooth and consistent print on uneven and textured media, especially recycled board stocks. The Alpine 516 fuser drum is part of the company’s Folding Carton Suite. From June 2013 it will be offered as an option for the two 508 mm wide printing presses in the Xeikon 3000 Series, the entry level Xeikon 3050 and high speed Xeikon 3500. These presses can print B2 and longer formats on board for folding carton. The Xeikon 3000 Series of continuous feed simplex presses are designed specifically for packaging and label work. The Alpine 516 fuser drum can be ordered with new machines or retrofitted to existing installations. Jeroen Van Bauwel, Director Product Management at Xeikon, explains the advantage of the new fuser drum: “The standard fuser drum has a hard surface, so if you have a structured substrate, there is a chance that it only contacts the raised areas, which may result in an uneven gloss level. The Alpine fuser drum has a softer, rubber like coating, which can adapt to the form of the surface and create a uniform look and feel on challenging substrates.” Print speeds are unchanged with the new drum, which can be used with conventional smooth surfaced card substrates and papers as well as with the rougher textured surfaces. Jeroen Van Bauwel adds: “The Alpine fuser drum really widens the range of carton materials that can be printed within the Xeikon Folding Carton Suite.

Deliveries of the first drums will start in June 2013. This follows a Beta test period with print sites, including C&M Packing SRL in Timisoara, Rumania, which specialises in printing labels and short run folding carton applications for food retailers and beauty industry.” Dorel Negru, General Manager of C&M Packing SRL, comments: “We have been testing the new Alpine 516 fuser drum for several months now. It has really enabled us to widen the application range of our Xeikon 3500 digital press, which will help us to grow our business. Mutoh presents expanded product portfolio At Fespa 2013 MUTOH will be presenting its expanded portfolio of wide format digital printing and computerised cutting solutions. The company will showcase three new wide format printers and a new cutting plotter series. The ValueJet Hybrid VJ-1617H is an affordable 64” (162.5 cm) wide roll to roll and rigid printer. It is Mutoh’s first printer equipped with white inks. The printer uses bio-based inks to create high quality prints for indoor and outdoor sign and display applications. The ValueJet 1624W is a 64” (162.5 cm) wide professional dye sublimation printer utilising the latest piezo drop on demand eight channel head technology and offering best in class speed and quality. Lightbar UV solution for graphics specialist A move to the latest low cost UV-curable print technology has quickly reaped financial and speed dividends for Complete Studio Graphics with its investment in a roll to roll wide format machine fitted with a Lightbar UV curing solution supplied by Colorific. Also available as a retro-fit, the installation of this new unit has instantly saved the London and Slough based graphics company significant man hours and production costs in a new system which costs a fraction of a conventional engine. Located on-site at London’s ExCel, a sizeable proportion of jobs produced by Complete Studio Graphics is in the events area, with exhibition participants relying on being able to get their display requirements turned round quickly and at a high quality. In addition, the company also produces a broad range of general graphics for conferences in other locations as well as for a diverse selection of clients from overseas as well as in the UK. Formerly, with jobs on flexible materials being produced using its solvent based units, Complete Studio Graphics was always faced with delays after printing and before laminating because of the risk of outgassing. With the addition of the Lightbar solution, finished jobs are now ready immediately, with no time needed for drying, outperforming solvent based production and providing the good durability available with UV-curable inks. “We needed a machine that would give us a faster way of working but at a low investment price, particularly as this is our first venture into UV-curable technology,” explains Alan Carter of Complete Studio Graphics. “But we didn’t want to sacrifice quality or our ability to maintain attractive prices for our clients who know that our sensible rates and fast turnaround don’t compromise the standard of the work we produce.” As well as producing banners and event graphics, many of the applications created by Complete Studio Graphics involve large, tiled panels with the emphasis often being on last minute orders which need to be supplied and fitted to demanding deadlines. The versatility and ease of use of the Lightbar unit now gives the company all the benefits and convenience of UV-curable production without the heavy investment cost. “With Lightbar, we can print work and use it straightaway, which is something that’s impossible with solvent based production,” Carter continues. “We’re now far more flexible and versatile, and the saving on lamination is a huge saving on time and money. UV-curable technology is the way to go.” Alan was originally looking at a proprietary flat-bed machine with roll to roll capabilities as his introduction to UV-curable print but, with the bulk of his company’s work being on flexible materials, it made even more sense to invest in a machine with the inexpensive Lightbar unit. Although it can be

retro-fitted for just £2,500 to an existing chassis that uses Epson DX4 or DX5 print-heads, he decided to buy the system as part of a new printer, thanks to the extremely low purchase price. The Lightbar unit has been developed to respond to the clear demand for printers which offer the convenience, familiarity and colour vibrance found in solvent based engines but with the fast drying and high gloss finish associated with UV-curable output. Currently there are large numbers of existing systems using solvent formulations but which have been rendered redundant because of the move away to other ink chemistries. Although latex has found popularity in some environments, in terms of durability and colour accuracy, UV-curable technologies continue to find favour even though initial investment costs are normally relatively high. However, owners of older machines can now modify their units quickly and effectively with the addition of Lightbar and its UV-Light next generation ink. Lightbar utilises Colorific’s next generation UV-Light inks which combine all the advantages of solvent based formulations with the benefits of UV-curable chemistry, giving good adhesion, very low odour and scuff and abrasion free results. Because the ink doesn’t dry in the nozzles, printhead life is extended, and low running costs are complemented by more environmentally-friendly output. As we prepare for the summer festival at Fespa 25th -29th June, here is a show round up from the QPP roving reporters, having visited Printwear and Promotions, Sign and Digital and North Print and Pack.

Buoyant Sign & Digital UK delivers all round

Sign & Digital UK has announced that 5,677 unique visitors (awaiting audit) attended the event. The show was a huge success with exhibitors reporting brisk sales across the three days. Onsite stand sales for the 2014 show increased by 44% as exhibitors rushed to secure the best positions for next year’s event. The exhibition was a platform for many new UK and European wide format print and imaging product launches from big names such as Roland DG, Hybrid Services/Mimaki, Epson, Mutoh, MTEX, DYSS and Zund. The free educational programme, both on-stand and show organised, was well received with sessions covering a huge range of topics including vehicle wrapping, dye-sub printing, routing, Adobe and Corel software and colour management. The New Business Theatre was also extremely well attended, with some sessions left with standing room only. Sessions covered included Marketing, PR, Business Development, Digital Signage, Direct to Garment printing and Social Media Being based in Halls 3 and 3A again this year meant that visitors to the NEC had a very agreeable travel experience, as the halls are only a short walk from both the train station and the car parks – and the beautiful weather certainly helped keep the buoyant mood afloat! For the second year running, there was a great twitter vibe at the show under the hashtag #SDUK. Visitors and exhibitors alike were tweeting about their experiences at the show. North Print & Pack 2013 packed a punch

North Print & Pack 2013, which this year included packaging for the first time, exhibitors have hailed a success. Visitor numbers to the Harrogate International Centre saw an 8% increase to the 2011 figures, with 2,421*over three days. The quality of delegates produced a resounding endorsement from exhibitors who confirmed that North Print & Pack continues to play a key role in the UK print and packaging calendar. Mary Buck, Sales Manager for North Print & Pack comments: “It was clear at North Print & Pack that the show was a key event for print service providers, label printers and packaging converters to attend in 2013 despite the print and packaging industry facing many challenges and changes. We are satisfied with the number of key decision makers it attracted – the hardware and software sales at the show are testimony to this. Konica Minolta UK sold seven production systems to just three key contracts that were secured on day two of the show. The eighth annual PrintIT! Awards, took place at North Print and Pack in Harrogate. Attracting a host of industry figures, print professionals and finalist schools, the event celebrated the hard work and achievements of the thousands of students who took part in this year’s PrintIT! competition.

D

uring the event Natasha Bates, a pupil from Wycombe High School in Buckinghamshire was announced as this year’s PrintIT! Overall Winner. Natasha was awarded the overall prize of a print related overseas trip, an iPad Mini and Rucksack, XF1 Camera and Memory Card, Pantone Capsure, Mug and Notebook and two printers, all courtesy of Xerox, Kodak, GUA, Fujifilm, Ricoh & Pantone. Tony Lock, outgoing Chairman of PrintIT!, congratulated all of the finalists of PrintIT! 2012/13 and commented on the importance of the nationwide competition for the future of the print industry, “The entire print and paper industry should be very proud that it has the largest Schools into Industry Programme in the UK. Encouraging talent, youth and energy into our industry is critical to the continued success of print and paper in this digital world. Eight years on the first students that were engaged in PrintIT! are now starting to leave university. This talent will be more likely to choose a career in print and paper. Education is an investment in the future - our future. Let’s all get behind the fantastic initiative and continue the great work that has already started. I have been proud to be a small part of the PrintIT! programme and good luck to Susan and the entire team in taking PrintIT! from strength to strength.” This year the overall winner of PrintIT! 20012/13 was selected by a panel of print, media and graphic arts experts that deliberated over who, out of the thousands of participating students, would win each of the competition’s 17 subject categories. Commenting on Natasha’s success, which included winning the prize for Best Wall Poster Richard Moore , The PrintIT! programme Director for Proskills, the standards setting body behind PrintIT!, said: “The entries this year were of a really high standard and all of the finalists were worthy of the overall prize so the judges thought long and hard before reaching their decision.” Mrs Hill, teacher of the Overall Winner and winner of the Best Teacher Award told us about the day:

“The girls had a great day and were talking to me non-stop about the size of the printers they saw and how fast they were, they were absolutely delighted with their awards and prizes!”. As part of PrintIT!, students are asked to look at the environmental issues facing print and paper as well as technical issues whilst designing a print based programme to promote Fairtrade products for a supermarket. This year the entrants designed a wide variety of end products, from leaflets and shelf wobblers through to posters, mobiles, floor decals and aisle and storefront banners. Kathy Woodward, Chief Executive of the BPIF, a major supporter of PrintIT! said “ The future of our industry depends upon attracting young people with the energy and creativity to allow us to experience our full potential in a multi-media world. Our member companies are fully supportive of this great initiative and will be backing it again in the coming year.” Richard Moore concludes, “What we have all seen today at North Print and Pack is a glimpse of some of the future talent available to the Print Industry. The whole event has been a great success and it has been an inspiration, not only to see the students enjoying the awards and North Print as a whole, but to see so many of print’s key figures in one place. Future outlook maybe cloudy? It would seem that, unlike the late Margaret Thatcher, the great technology giant Microsoft is not beyond taking a U-turn, though it will not describe the policy change as such officially. Martin Christie says the cause of this new direction is the miserable reception given to the much heralded Windows 8 operating system.

T

he company has put its best spin on the product, emphasising that initially sales have surpassed previous versions like Windows 7 and XP. But Windows 8 was expected to sweep the world and overwhelm the opposition including the rapidly dominating tablet market. But then there are more devices requiring operating systems than there were when 7 was launched, and considerably more than when XP was king a decade ago. Merely keeping pace with the trend was not enough. And in listing the Windows history it was interesting that the name Vista had apparently been dropped from the Mircosoft dictionary. That short-lived version had been conveniently swept under the mouse mat. So evidently, after a matter of months, will be Windows 8 which later this year will see an “upgrade” which will be called Windows Blue, and will include radical changes like bringing back the start bar! The general consensus is that Windows 8 was a step too far for the majority of users. In trying to take a giant leap into the touch screen future, it left the majority of its users way behind, and the new learning curve was just a tad too steep to be accepted by general customers. As I mentioned in a preview some months ago, many businesses relying on Microsoft products have only recently made the step up to Windows 7 from XP. Regardless of financial costs, the loss of continuity and potential disruption of service is just not an

option in a hard pressed working environment. The private consumer may be persuaded by novelty, and indeed have the time to learn new tricks. But free time for training and education is in short supply in a busy office environment these days. What also strikes me as short sighted is the apparent assumption that what suits the individual at home will also be appropriate at work in an entirely different situation. Henry Ford, when he launched the original mass produced car, pronounced that you could have any model you liked as long as it was black. You have only to see how many different variations of a single model a car manufacturer now produces to appreciate they now anticipate customer demand, not dictate it. It often strikes me that in the digital print shop there are many things not quite suited to the real task in hand — not just operating systems, but printer hardware, networks and controls. It’s partly because most businesses do not develop in any conveniently planned way, but react to circumstance, adding things when needed, not necessarily when appropriate. Even less reason to take advice and direction from people who have no experience at all of the working practices. You might make an impulse purchase in the high street if something attractive in a shop window catches your eye, but it’s not a smart policy in the office. Anything you need to work with, and rely on, needs to be properly evaluated, and tested in

the real world. That’s why the trusted and proven XP system had such a long life in the work place, no doubt to the frustration of Microsoft’s marketing department. It was not just popular on the desktop, but as the platform upon which other machine systems were based. Unfortunately operating systems, like old cars, can’t go on forever. They can be patched up from time to time, but eventually the old engine has had enough and becomes slow, unreliable and inefficient. Microsoft has already begun winding down any support and service for XP users and within a year this will cease altogether. Tha’ts why the question of what replaces it is of such significance to Windows users. Three years is generally regarded as a reasonable period to review the performance of a system in the real work place. Time to sort out the issues, iron out the bugs. That’s why Windows 7 is likely to be the considered option. Of course it isn’t a simple matter of updating the software, the slicker operating system needs a more powerful engine, so overall computer performance and processing power are important to gain any advantage from developments. What was adequate to launch a task in XP ten years ago, will barely keep the time and date ticking over today. And in another five years ? Everything moves at such an accelerated pace that it’s no longer a matter of keeping up with technology but trying to get ahead of it. If you are looking for an upgrade of kit it is well worth looking for specifications well over current needs in order to anticipate future demands that will quickly become the norm. Software developers, for example, will always quote the minimum specification requirements to run their programmes so they don’t discourage potential customers. It’s a bit like car manufacturers always quoting the absolute best fuel consumption figures, coasting downhill with no passengers and a healthy tail wind. Stop start slogging in heavy traffic on the M25 will come up with very different figures. The minimum spec. to run a particular programme will be just that. It will not allow for the fact that you are, in a working situation, likely to have several progammes open and functioning at the same time. This will make a considerable difference to performance and the consequent ability to complete tasks. That this is an essential consideration these days is a measure of how far we have come from just being a copy shop.

There is still a role for that glass top on the printer, but such is the input of purely digital files that at any time every computer in the shop may be called into duty, and not all may be able to rise to the challenge. Put into perspective that when Windows XP was introduced customers were still using floppy discs as a state of the art storage device. That’s 1.4 Mb — or about enough room for a word document with a small photo embedded. With the relentless mathematics of Moore’s law — that the progess of technical development in computing power doubles every two years — we will be as far away from current specifications in five years as we are now from the floppy disc of ten years ago. Customers expectations of what we can achieve, in time, quality and cost, are also likely to develop at a similar pace. As they are able to create documents on their convenient tablets and phones, they won’t accept that we can’t print them in the time it takes to email them. The more they are detached from the real world by communicating entirely in cyber space, the less they will understand any practical considerations of producing real hard copy print. Of course the mass-market internet printers have already embraced this potential market making it easy to get your business cards and personal stationery at the click of a mouse. There is no point tackling their challenge head on, although taking advantage of web features like making it easy for customers to upload files to templates, and calculating costings and turnaround will help work flow. But the essential and very human interface is that ability of the digital print shop to analyse and advise, correct mistakes and adjust colour, and therefore produce a better product. This is the key selling point, and also why keeping up to date with the technology is vital otherwise the customers themselves will overtake you. Which logic neatly takes me from Micorsoft to the other great software giant Adobe. Regardless of platform, it is Adobe products, and particularly the ubiquitous PDF, that dominate the printing environment and therefore it is essential to keep abreast of developments. I have previously chronicled the progression of Photoshop, In Design and Illustrator — the basic tools — and their incorporation with other applications into the Creative Suite. That would seem to have reached its pinnacle with CS6 as the next step is Creative Cloud. Users have already been able to purchase parts of the suite on line, effectively renting them short term rather than purchasing the complete package. Creative Cloud is a move to get away from selling individual packages altogether, and

replace it with a subscription system that will be on going and will service upgrades and updates automatically. It would be fair to say this has had a mixed reception among Adobe users, but it’s a development that was probably inevitable in a world that accepts permanent on line connectivity as the norm. It neatly solves any issues of pirate software which have traditionally dogged the product as all users will be logged in and monitored by the parent company. This obviously suits Adobe who will not only plug a loss of revenue, but also receive a more regular flow of cash from subs rather than peaks when customers upgrade. In some ways Adobe products have been the victim of their own success — so good that customers do not want to upgrade every two years when marketing demands. The useful life of a version of Photoshop and its stablemates can be stretched long after its sell-by date. It becomes an issue in the working place however when features in newer versions are not supported by older applications. Adobe has always been able to slip in a few novelties in upgrades that make previous versions potentially redundant. Now the argument is that it will be able to do it automatically, and that a continued subscription is virtually compulsory. In business terms, a one off payment is obviously easier to slip into calculations than a subscription that may fluctuate, but Adobe argue that regular

users will save money in the longer term. There’s certainly plenty of debate back and forth on the internet on the matter, along with projected costings, so it’s worth doing a big of research to see what the options are. Certainly if it offers the possibility of a more pick-and-mix selection of products it could be a benefit. A single application subscription would be less than £20 a month for example according to current projections. Although the move is part of the whole trend to take information into the clouds, and react to the tablet revolution, it does not mean you have to be connected to the internet to use the rented software. However if a subscription runs out, any working files saved that are not compatible with previous versions already on the system may not be useable or even accessible. Adobe’s basic photo editor Elements, still a very capable piece of software, will still be available as a boxed item as will Adobe Lightroom. Full details of the pricing structure and options are available on the Adobe website. Other software brands are of course available, and it is perhaps an opportunity to have a look at what you actually need when you have a fair number of computers in the shop. Competitors like Corel may be enjoying the debate at Adobe’s expense but it remains to be seen whether the policy change will seriously affect the position of the market leader. Watch this space.

Billboard produces 15,000 litres of drinking water out of thin air The first billboard ever to create drinking water from humidity in the air has produced 15,000 litres of water in six months. Launched at the end of 2012, the billboard is now a prominent feature of the skyline in Bujama, a small village community just south of Peru’s capital city, Lima. The climate is oppressive, with some residents of Bujama having no access to a clean water supply. Since the billboard’s arrival, residents of Bujama now have access to an average of 96 litres of drinking water a day. The unique billboard was co-produced by outdoor advertising owner Clear Channel Peru and researchers at UTEC, University of Engineering and Technology in Lima. Media agency Media Connection BPN and advertising agency, Mayo Draft FCB Perú, have also been full partners in the project. The billboard cost just US $32,600 to set-up and works by using a panel to trap humidity in the air, transforming it into water. Internally, the panel consists of five devices that extract water vapour from the air using a condenser and filters. The water is stored in tanks at the top of the structure,

Maria Arias is one of the dozens of local people to benefit from the billboard, collecting between 2 to 10 litres for her family every day. Maria describes the billboard as a ‘privilege’ for her community. Children from the local school (Colegio Franco Peruano Catolico) are another group to benefit on

a regular basis. One class has a running session three times per week; with students stopping to refresh and rehydrate at the billboard as part of every lesson. New PRO-DESIGN range from Premier Paper International Paper has announced that its PRO-DESIGN range, International Paper’s flagship colour laser paper from its Saillat Mill, is now being offered with Carbon Capture which is an initiative introduced by leading national paper merchant group, Premier Paper. The announcement provides a further environmental credential and endorsement of the product’s high sustainability standards and follows the recent announcement of the range’s switch from PEFC to FSC certification, and also the introduction of an FSC certified 350gsm heavy weight paper to its PRO-DESIGN range in August last year. The PRO-DESIGN range is already known for its high environmental performance, having recently received FSC accreditation the PRO-DESIGN range already carries the EU-Ecolabel and the carbon capture initiative is another significant addition to its environmental criteria. PRO-DESIGN is produced at International Paper’s Saillat mill in France, which is one of the world’s best performing sites in terms of CO2 emissions. Since 1990, Saillat has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 78%. The Saillat mill uses thinning from certified forests or those that are in the process of becoming certified, with its main forestry supplies located within just 128km of the mill, reducing any transport related environmental impacts such as CO2 emissions. Saillat also recovers by-products from the furniture and framing industries which represents 27% of its wood supply. In terms of energy efficiencies and performance, some 88% of Saillat’s energy requirements are met by the on-site production of green energy (biomass). The Carbon Capture initiative allows International Paper’s customers to effectively “capture” the CO2 emissions from their PRO-DESIGN paper purchases made through Premier Paper by planting native woodland in the UK, through The Woodland Trust and The Woodland Carbon Scheme. Customers who order papers from the PRO-DESIGN range can choose to capture the carbon used in the manufacture and distribution processes of the paper. The amount of CO2 that has been generated is then calculated. A certificate and a copy of the Woodland Carbon logo will then be issued, which customers can use on all print jobs produced using papers in the

PRO-DESIGN range that have been carbon captured. This will provide a further enhancement to their brand and their environmental messaging. Dave Jones, Group Marketing Director of Premier Paper Group, said, “Premier’s Carbon Capture scheme is unique as it works with the Woodland Trust and captures CO2 through creating woodland right here in the UK. Print Emporium now open 24/7 During this year the QPP reporters researched web2print solutions which resulted in us recommending the PrintShop offered by B2CPrint and available through Almabyte in the UK. You may have seen the articles and features in the last three magazines and be familiar with the trial shop we hope to fully launch soon at www.printshoponline.co.uk But don’t just take our word for it, in our opinion there is nothing better than a real case study to convince others that it can work for them and to see the benefits. It is fantastic when QPP readers pioneer new services and are prepared to share their best practice in print. After reading the March magazine Nick Brown at Print Emporium in Bournemouth contacted John Clark at Almabyte for more information. He then discussed this with his wife Jackie (as any sensible man would) but also as she’s his partner in the business, and they decided to proceed and order the system. The order was completed on March 27th and www. printshoplocal.co.uk was launched fully live on May 1st. As well as this his designer was soon in full swing adding templates and thinking how to utilise the local brand, including some very attractive Dorset business cards. Having struggled for a very long time to achieve something similar the benefits of a well thought out solution are very clear. Everything is accessed though a back-end control panel where you really do have full control over your printshop website. When we asked Nick about how it was going, the first thing he said was how delighted he was to get his first real order. “It was placed on May 7th less than a week after launch, by a completely new customer we have never dealt with before and best of all they ordered at 7:59PM when normally we’d be closed!” He also said “We don’t expect to compete in terms of exposure with the big players but we sure can beat them on service and quality to retain our local market and beyond” Nick has also started to benefit from joining the B2CPrint ‘club’ setup by QPP “We have already exchanged ideas on new products and discussed pooling

The changes will be introduced in stages starting with some as soon as 25th June this year, these are: Simplified Employment Tribunal Procedures & Costs which are likely to include: Legal officers, who may hear certain types of employment tribunal claims; Employment Appeal Tribunal will be heard by a judge sitting alone; and Tribunal award caps.

Whistle-Blowing Rights A disclosure will not be protected unless the employee reasonably believes that it is made in the public interest. Disclosures no longer need to be made “in good faith”. Implications of vicarious liability for employers where a worker is subjected to a detriment by another worker for making a protected disclosure. The employer has a defence where it took all reasonable steps to prevent the detriment.

Dismissal for Political Opinions No longer will the two-year qualifying period that an employee must satisfy to be eligible to bring an unfair dismissal claim where the reason for the dismissal is the employee’s political opinions or affiliation. AND there’s more, further changes that are likely to be implemented this October or April 2014.

Compromise agreements renamed settlement agreements Encouraging parties to settle employment disputes, compromise agreements are renamed “settlement agreements”. The statutory code of practice being introduced will set out how settlement agreements and procedures will be made.

Confidentiality of Negotiations before Termination of Employment This introduces the concept of confidentiality for pre-termination negotiations. Unfair dismissal claims at an Employment Tribunal hearing will be unable to take into account discussions between an employer and their employee or the terms of an offer made prior to the termination of employment.

Early Conciliation This introduces the need for potential claimants to give details of their employment tribunal claim to ACAS before commencing proceedings. ACAS will then try to engage both parties in conciliation talks with the assistance of a conciliation officer.

Shareholders given binding votes on pay policy Giving shareholders binding votes on directors’ pay.

Caste Discrimination Introducing a provision to add “caste” to the definition of “race” under the Equality Act.

As of today I possess: On the shelf under the medicine cabinet: 18 Camay in 4 stacks of 4 and 1 stack of 2. On the Kleenex dispenser: 11 Camay in 2 stacks of 4 and 1 stack of 3. On the bedroom dresser: 1 stack of 3 Cashmere Bouquet, 1 stack of 4 hotelsize Ivory, and 8 Camay in 2 stacks of 4. Inside the medicine cabinet: 14 Camay in 3 stacks of 4 and 1 stack of 2. In the shower soap dish: 6 Camay, very moist. On the northeast corner of the tub: 1 Cashmere Bouquet, slightly used. On the northwest corner of the tub: 6 Camays in 2 stacks of 3. Please ask Kathy when she services my room to make sure the stacks are neatly piled and dusted. Also, please advise her that stacks of more than 4 have a tendency to tip. May I suggest that my bedroom windowsill is not in use and will make an excellent spot for future soap deliveries. Naughty but nice The mother-in-law stopped unexpectedly by the recently married couple’s house. She rang the doorbell and stepped into the house.
