Limpio Office Solutions doubles revenues with Xerox
LIMPIO Office Solutions has grown organically by simplifying business processes for its customers and providing exceptional service. In the last year it doubled turnover through its partnership with Xerox. Limpio became a Xerox Authorised Reseller three years ago and has expanded into new sources of profitable revenue. “Partnering with a global brand such as Xerox, with such a wide range of products, had obvious appeal, enabling us to bring value-added services to our customers,” said David Sheppard, managing director, Limpio. As a Xerox Authorised Service Provider Limpio delivers comprehensive technical support to its Xerox customers. Limpio now leads with Xerox’s ConnectKey technology platform, leveraging Xerox multifunction printers and software solutions to solve customers’ business challenges. The advanced software embedded in these devices enables cloud sharing, mobile printing and customised apps that make daily work processes faster. Managed print services (MPS) is also a key part of Limpio’s success. By adopting Xerox Partner Print Services, Xerox’s channel managed print service offering, and working closely with Xerox on systems integration, Limpio has further enhanced its services-led capability.
Xerox support has also contributed to Limpio’s sales success by simplifying their sales process. For example, taking prospects to the Xerox Innovation Centre, where the full range of technology and MPS offerings can be demonstrated. Another key resource that has made an impact on sales is the Xerox SMART Centre, a web-based sales enablement portal that can generate indepth sales proposals and give direct access to the latest product information, competitive analysis and other sales support tools. With this strategy, Limpio has achieved impressive sales results leading to its Xerox revenues more than doubling in 2013. In February 2014 Limpio was named the 2013 Xerox Authorised Reseller of the year. “Limpio’s success is about the quality delivery of services and the aftercare that comes with that. Xerox has been a great support throughout our journey from selling hardware through to delivering MPS,” concluded Sheppard. Since its founding in 2003, Limpio Office Solutions has provided its clients a wide range of offerings, from office printing devices to service and repair, to managed print services and print room installation. www.limpio-os.co.uk

Prestige makes its digital debut with Heidelberg PRESTIGE Sheldon in Birmingham has made its debut in digital printing with the installation of a Linoprint C751 press from Heidelberg. “The digital market is increasing and we are missing out,” says Paul Massam, owner. “There are not many digital presses that are able to produce quality like this and it gives us the opportunity to provide short run and personalised work to businesses in the West Midlands.” The company has specified the personalisation software and an envelope feeder on the Linoprint C751, a press that was selected only after a wider look at the supplier market. “We liked the quality of work the Linoprint could produce, its flexibility and we had confidence in Heidelberg as our supplier. It is a strong brand,” says Mr Massam. The company already runs two Heidelberg offset presses, a Speedmaster SM 52-5, a Printmaster PM52-5, as well as using a Suprasetter A 75 CtP device, a Polar 92 and a Stahlfolder Ti52. It has in-house booklet-making, stitching and cutting and creasing which means comprehensive offline
finishing for the digital as well as the litho work. The breakpoint between offset and digital runs will depend on the specific job but Mr Massam says that quality is of paramount importance and the C751 gives us litho quality at digital pricing
and turnaround. “Offset still has a strong future. This investment is additional capacity and not replacement for our existing technology,” says Mr Massam. www.uk.heidelberg.com

Xeretec Acquires Bytes Document Solutions XERETEC, one of the most established suppliers and integrators of digital print hardware, software, solutions and service in the UK and Ireland, has acquired Xerox reseller, Bytes Document Solutions (BDS), part of the Bytes Technology Group (BTG). The acquisition unites two highly successful Xerox suppliers and positions Xeretec as Xerox’s largest reseller in Western Europe in terms of scale, managed print services and large production equipment sales. The company’s £57m annual turnover will be driven by a combined team of 220 employees based in 11 offices across the UK and Ireland. While the company continues to be headed by the management team behind Xeretec’s growth and success to date, it will now be strengthened by the expertise of the individuals who helped make BDS such an attractive acquisition prospect. Commenting on the acquisition, Steve Hawkins, Xeretec’s Group Managing Director said: “Acquiring Bytes Document Solutions is a significant move, helping to accelerate the pace at which Xeretec will achieve its goal of becoming a £100m turnover organisation by September 1, 2019. It has significant advantages for our customers, staff and of course Xerox, all of whom are set to enjoy the many benefits that will come from this best of breed approach. The values of Bytes Document Solutions’ are an ideal complement to Xeretec’s, making this is a win-win development for all, while starting a new chapter in the Xeretec success story.” The sale of BDS by BTG will enable Bytes in the UK to continue its focus on software and software services, where it has enjoyed considerable success as a partner with software publishers such as Microsoft, Checkpoint, Symantec, VM Ware, Citrix and Oracle. In a statement Neil Murphy, Group MD at Bytes, said: “The Bytes Group intends to invest further in its software and software services capabilities.
Importantly, we will work in close partnership with Xeretec moving forward to ensure customer satisfaction is our number one priority. ” Meanwhile, Xeretec Group will now focus on its objective of becoming a privately owned, £100m turnover organisation by September 2019, through specialising and leading the market in the provision of print devices and managed print services, while retaining, adding and growing its customer base. The landscape-changing acquisition benefits new and existing customers by combining each company’s close ties with Xerox, their print industry contacts, technical knowledge and market expertise. Furthermore, the companies’ shared core values of exceptional customer care, outstanding service delivery and commitment to long-term customer relationships, means customers can be assured of a solid reinforcement of the values they admired and respected in both companies before the acquisition. Critically, with the economy gradually improving and its customers’ businesses growing ever more successful, Xeretec is now even better positioned to effectively meet the evolving print needs of its
customers - wherever they are located in the UK including those in the public sector, legal, oil and gas, insurance, aerospace, manufacturing, retail, finance, marketing, packaging and commercial and high street print shops. At the same time, the united force provides Xerox with a partner that’s even better placed to successfully drive its products, services and solutions to the market. To ensure continuity for customers, all current customer relationships, service and support will continue to be served uninterrupted by existing offices. Following the acquisition, customers will immediately benefit from an unmatched knowledge of and experience in print technology and print-related software services. In addition to boosting the local economy, the acquisition also creates an even more secure environment for new and future Xeretec staff, while opening up fresh career path opportunities for them. There is greater scope for them to develop their skills across different lines of business and hone their career further within a secure, established, successful and dynamic organisation. www.xeretec.co.uk

Got the Mug, Notebook and T-shirt!
THEMAGICTOUCH introduce new and innovative transfer solutions adding to the vast range of marketing opportunities currently available. Having pioneered and introduced the ultimate in affordable dark garment decoration with the WoW image transfer process, the company now introduce some real “game changing” applications using the same white toner-based printer technology. To date individual personalisation and short-run production of ceramic mugs has been dominated by “white” coated mugs decorated using traditional sublimation transfer process. However, things are about to change. Together with Europe’s leading ceramics coater and decorator Listawood based in the UK, TheMagicTouch has formed a global partnership to promote and market this new opportunity. This milestone in mug decoration combines the patent protected SatinMug developed and
engineered by Listawood and the CPM transfer paper from TheMagicTouch with the new white toner technology. The matt-satin finish offers a contemporary look and smooth tactile feel plus detail and colour matching as never seen before. The initial eight colour range includes black, red, blue, yellow, green, cyan and pink with a white version also being suitable for either toner or sublimation decoration. One advantage of the compliant and dishwasher safe SatinMug is Listawood’s ability to produce mugs to a specific Pantone colour with a minimum production requirement of only 1000 mugs. Matching specific colour requests will be of great interest to promotions companies, charities, B2B market, universities and sports clubs amongst many potential markets. TheMagicTouch also introduce printable mug boxes which will assist in promoting this
personalised concept and add value to what is already regarded as a higher value product. The CPM tonerbased transfers produced on the white toner TMT/Oki 711 printer can be applied using traditional mug presses with the finished mug costing approx. £2 each. Jim Nicol, Managing Director confirms “our own experience and research has confirmed the market for white mugs into the B2B market has become very competitive. This new opportunity will give everyone a good chance of making some money and creating new business opportunities” The decorated mug remains a very popular promotional product and has now been awarded a new lease of life.
And finally, the same CPM transfer paper used for the mug decoration is also suitable for the full colour decoration of notebooks, diaries, iPad cases, folders and many other B2B hard surface products. For further details, to arrange a demonstration or for information on any of the other transfer papers or products contact the TheMagicTouch at, sales@themagictouch.co.uk, 01582 671444, www.themagictouch.co.uk
EFI new Digital Front End Fiery FS150 Pro EFI has launched its newest Fiery platform for cut-sheet digital production systems. The EFI Fiery FS150 Pro digital front end (DFE) offers faster processing, unsurpassed image quality, seamless MIS/ERP integration and even easier to use automated workflows. Higher Performance Fiery HyperRIP pushes performance to the limit by simultaneously processing a print job on four processor cores. As a result, users can get their full-colour digital print jobs processed up to 55% faster than Fiery Driven presses without HyperRIP. “With the new FS150 Pro technology, we dramatically improve the already industry-leading processing time of Fiery DFEs,” said John Henze, vice president, Fiery marketing, EFI. “That best-in-class Fiery performance, combined with easy-to-use automated workflows, gives in-plant print departments and commercial printers the power
to complete work faster with outstanding accuracy, even on complex jobs.” Unsurpassed Image Quality The Fiery FS150 Pro DFE has all the advanced imaging features that made its predecessor the first DFE platform to carry a 100% perfect pass label from VIGC’s PDF RIP Audit. Users can have more confidence than ever before that their output matches the designer’s intent on the first print -- including a new unique
greyscale composite overprint feature that ensures correct monochrome printing of overprints, drop shadows and transparencies. Fiery ImageViewer, an application that allows users to view full resolution raster data in real time and adjust the final raster output before printing, now includes the ability to save last-minute colour adjustments so future jobs that require the same type of colour correction can be produced faster.
More Job Automation The latest version of Fiery Command WorkStation software included with the Fiery FS150 Pro DFE puts automated production controls at users’ fingertips. Server-based automated workflows are easy for system administrators to set up and deploy, allowing operators to produce jobs in fewer clicks and with reduced errors. The Fiery FS150 Pro DFE integrates seamlessly with EFI’s market-leading MIS/ERP software, eCommerce/Web-to-Print products and scheduling tools. As a result, customers can easily optimise their print load and track both expenses and profits in a complete, connected business operations workflow. The first DFEs based on the Fiery FS150 Pro system platform will be available starting next month. For more information about Fiery DFEs, visit www.efi.com

The new HP Designjet Z6800 Printer increases productivity with print speeds up to 50 per cent faster than previous HP devices. Additionally, this printer is uniquely designed to deliver high-value indoor applications and gallery-quality prints, with durable output that last up to 200 years. The HP Designjet Z6800 Printer produces top-quality prints with advanced colour management features, including an embedded spectrophotometer, as well as HP Chromatic Red Ink for a wider colour gamut and uniform gloss. As demand for shorter runs and faster turnaround times increases, the HP Scitex FB10000 Industrial Press has been crucial in enabling PSPs to profitably produce applications for the point of purchase (POP) graphics and corrugated display markets. Also shown on the stand, the HP Scitex FB10000 Industrial Press delivers unmatched media versatility, including acrylics, folding carton, corrugated, wood and polypropylene as well as flexible and rigid media. The press has a print capacity up to 600m2/hour (6,456ft2/hour) and direct-to-board printing. HP Scitex High Dynamic Range (HDR) Printing Technology provides precision control over colour and tone for clarity of image detail, producing prints with the highest dynamic range. The HP Scitex 15000 Corrugated Press, announced earlier in May 2014, simplifies and streamlines corrugated printing on an industrial scale. With the new large-format digital press – expected to be available 1st November – converters and display makers can print direct to corrugated media as well as add short-run and versioning capabilities to their existing flexographic or lithographic-lamination operations. The press features HP HDR240 Scitex Inks, which are GREENGUARD GOLDSM Certified and meet AgBB criteria, making them ideal for indoor point-of-purchase displays, bulk bins and freestanding display units. Samples showing what can be achieved with the HP FB225 Scitex Varnish Ink, as well as the Light Black, Orange and White inks, were displayed at the show. The HP FB225 varnish ink allows HP Scitex FB7500/FB7600 Industrial Press owners to add spot or full varnish, create embossed text and images as well as expand the colour gamut. New Mimaki JV300 MIMAKI has announced the availability of the JV300-130/160 family of eco-solvent inkjet wide format printers. The Mimaki JV300130/160 is compatible with solvent and water-based sublimation inks, and provides a wide range of applications including outdoor signage, posters, interior décor and vehicle wrapping. Shown for the first time at FESPA Digital 2014, these printers produce stunning quality output in 1.3 and 1.6m widths, at speeds of up to 105m2 per hour, using brand-new inks and print heads. The Mimaki JV300-130/160 will begin shipping in June 2014. Mimaki Europe is located on Stand A1-110 at the show. “Mimaki was the first company to bring solvent inkjet to wide format printing,” said Mike Horsten, General Manager Marketing EMEA for Mimaki Europe, “Since that time, we have continued to bring innovation to this space, including increased quality, flexibility and environmental sustainability. In addition to the amazing eco-solvent inkjet printing quality that can be achieved with this new family of printers, these printers are also extremely flexible as they can be used for both eco-solvent and water-based sublimation printing. This makes return on investment and the profitable development of new applications faster and easier than ever before for sign and display graphics businesses of all sizes.” The range of new printers features brand new print heads that can easily manage both solvent and water-based inks for a broad range of wide format printing applications. The printers will run with two different ink types that support a wide range of materials and applications, including SS21 ecosolvent ink in CMYK, light cyan, light magenta and white. Newly-developed
inks are also available in orange and light black to extend the colour gamut and improve gradation performance. Highdensity printing and fast drying time enable more throughput and shorter production cycles without blocking or bleeding. Alternatively, the Mimaki JV300 can run Sb53 water-based sublimation inks for printing on textiles, producing bright colours and enabling highdensity printing. The ideal print material is polyester, which is used for apparel fabric, sports uniforms, swimsuits and soft signage. When using SS21 inks, the printer features the ability to lay down a denser layer of solvent white ink, which produces excellent opacity and brilliant colours on either transparent or dark/opaque materials. The newly developed SS21 orange ink can be used as a process colour to closely match 92% of the PANTONE colour chart. Thanks to a wider colour gamut with orange ink, corporate colours can be faithfully represented along with accurate replications of food and other natural products. Mimaki’s new light black inks and superior grey-balance control produces accurate greyscale printing without unexpected colour shifts. Smooth, non-grainy skin tones and greyscale gradation are highlights of this new printing capability. “The JV300 is a significant new printer for Mimaki,” says John de la Roche – national sales manager for Hybrid’s UK and Irish distributor, Hybrid Services Ltd. “Yet again; Mimaki has delivered a class leading product. The JV300 is confirmation of Mimaki’s innovative approach to producing perfect solutions for this very important market sector.” www.hybridservices.co.uk
Epson launches new SureColor range EPSON has announced the launch of a new range of high speed, four colour large format SureColor SC-T printers designed for a variety of graphics, CAD and GIS applications within design, commercial print, copy shop, retail and education environments. The new roll-fed SureColor SC-T range features nine models offering a choice of widths, productivity and scanning capability. Building on the success of the SureColor SC-T printers launched in 2012, the new high speed 44 inch SureColor SC-T7200, 36 inch SC-T5200 and 24 inch SC-T3200 printers introduce a range of enhancements designed to maximise performance within busy print production environments. Recognising the market’s need for maximum productivity and the flexibility to switch quickly between different media if required, the new SureColor SC-T7200D and SC-T5200D models feature double paper rolls with auto paper loading and auto switching between rolls. Epson has further increased the versatility of the printers by integrating a 36 inch wide colour scanner with the new multi-function 44 inch and 36 inch SureColor SC-T7200MFP and SC-T5200MFP models. These are the first Epson large-format printers with a scanner that gives users the flexibility to digitise large-format hard copies and
scan to file, scan to email or scan to share with other SC-T printers. An A1 original can be scanned and printed in about 39 seconds. These multifunction printers are also available in either single or double-roll configurations. To further maximise performance, the new SureColor SC-T range features ultra-fast image processing, optional 320GB hard drive for significant print spooling functionality and secure networking. To ensure the printers fit seamlessly into design and print environments, PostScript support with dual 1.6Ghz CPUs is available as an option on all the new SureColor SC-T printers which enables users to print multiple file formats, including large data-rich files, quickly and directly from leading design and CAD programs.
High quality prints are assured by the combination of Epson’s four colour UltraChrome XD pigment ink with permanent PrecisionCore TFP printheads to deliver precise, repeatable and long life performance. Supplied in a choice of 110, 350 and 700 ml cartridges, the ink has been developed to deliver the deep blacks and crisp, dense lines needed for detailed technical graphics, and the vibrant colours necessary for high quality prints and posters. Plus, this water-resistant and smudge-proof ink produces prints that are suitable for short-term outdoor use as well as any indoor application. The SureColor SC-T printers are designed to fit easily into your environment, with sleek styling, small footprint, and front operation. Helping to reduce impact on the environment, the SureColor SC-T printers use water-based inks and are ENERGY STAR certified for their excellent power efficiency. “The new generation of easy to use SureColor SC-T printers have been designed to deliver the ultimate in flexibility and production performance into busy design and print environments,” says Duncan Ferguson, Director C&I, Pro-Graphics, Epson Europe. “The ability to print onto paper and board up to 1.5mm thick makes them ideal for a wide variety of graphics applications.” www.epson.co.uk

Diversify and prosper
Mail and fulfilment services are an obvious next step for print providers, and one that anyone can make with the help of Neopost. The print industry is highly competitive and becoming more so, as customers introduce paperless processes and switch print volume to digital channels.
N
EOPOST AND THE BPIF recently carried out a survey of UK printing industry professionals for the UK Printing Industry – Future Focus report. Almost half of respondents (44%) expect turnover to fall over the next three years, as the industry grapples with three major challenges – overcapacity, cited by 54%; competition from other media (53%); and technological changes (41%). Print service providers (PSPs) undoubtedly face major challenges, but what the survey also makes clear is that they are determined to develop new skills to overcome them. Three quarters of respondents have recently diversified, or are in the process of diversifying, and two-thirds are currently in discussion with clients about widening their product offering. Diversification has multiple benefits: it opens up new revenue streams; it increases customer retention; and it helps differentiate yourself from the competition. So what are the best areas for printers and copy shops to expand into? Perhaps the most obvious is mailing and fulfilment. Offering a one-stop shop where mail can be printed, inserted into envelopes and posted provides clear benefits to the customer; gives scope to develop additional services in the future, such as multi-channel marketing and communications; and, crucially, enables print providers to see off the growing commercial threat from mailing houses that have started to offer print services, as they too diversify. KEY BENEFITS Access to a large market: Transactional and marketing mail is still a huge market. In 2012-13, Royal Mail handled 58 million items of addressed mail every day. EVOLUTION NOT REVOLUTION: Supplementing printing with mailing services is a natural extension of your business that can easily be assimilated by employees and customers. It is also an important first step on the road to multi-channel marketing services encompassing digital and paper-based communications. CUSTOMER BENEFITS: Economies of scale from more productive equipment and greater purchasing power will enable you to offer savings on print and stationery; postal discounts through Royal Mail or alternative postal providers; shorter lead times; and more sophisticated mailings with personalisation and one-to-one marketing. EXPERT ASSISTANCE: Attractive as it is, mailing and fulfilment is a completely new world for many print companies. According to the Future Focus report, currently fewer than four in 10 (39%) PSPs offer both mailing and fulfilment services, and the figure is likely to be even lower for copy shops and smaller PSPs. One of the main barriers to wider adoption, cited by more than half of survey respondents, is lack of knowledge about the mailing industry. This is where Neopost can help. As a leading provider of mailroom technology, Neopost is the perfect partner to help you exploit this potentially
lucrative new source of revenue. Their consultants can provide expert advice and supply you with all the equipment you need to become a one stop shop for mail printing, insertion and despatch. Three product categories that really stand out are envelope printers, folder-inserters and output management software. Together, or on their own, they can speed up mail processing, eliminate errors and provide the personalisation that customers crave. ENVELOPE PRINTERS: Neopost envelope and address printers enable you to print addresses, logos, colour graphics and PPI codes onto blank or pre-printed envelopes (and postcards and other media) at high speed. With variable data printing, you can personalise the outside of each envelope to achieve higher response rates. FOLDER-INSERTERS: Neopost folder-inserters fold letters, insert them into envelopes, along with other items such as business reply envelopes, leaflets and postcards, and seal the envelopes ready for despatch. Insertions can be varied on-the-fly, enabling you to customise the content of mailings for individual customers. OUTPUT MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE: Neopost Output Management Software streamlines mailing production, sorting and despatch. From presorting to maximise Royal Mail discounts to the application of optical marks that tell a folder-inserter what inserts to include, it automates the whole mailing process. The software even supports multi-channel communications by automatically sending messages by email or post depending on an individual customer’s preference. Diversification into a new business area can seem daunting, especially for smaller firms. But it needn’t be so. With a supplier like Neopost at your side, you can face the future with confidence. To find out more about how Neopost can help you deliver mailing and fulfilment services, please call 0800 731 1334 or visit www.neopost.co.uk/QPP5

Sign & Digital UK Show Report Sign & Digital UK has confirmed its status as the UK’s leading exhibition for the sign making, display solutions and digital printing industry following a bumper show with more than 6,113 visitors (awaiting audit), an 8 per cent increase on 2013.
T
HE THREE-DAY EVENT took place at the NEC, Birmingham and featured a host of exclusive national and international product launches, kit demonstrations, new show features and more than 30 daily seminars and workshops. Following the success of the show, exhibitors moved quickly to secure their stand space for the 2015 event, resulting in a 33 per cent increase in re-bookings compared to last time. With a third of the floor space already booked for next year, the show organisers have confirmed that in 2015 Sign & Digital UK will move into Halls 17 and 18 at the NEC to accommodate the show’s growing demand. The event will take place on 24 to 26 March. Rudi Blackett, event director, said: “This year’s Sign & Digital UK has surpassed everyone’s expectations, with an exciting range of product launches and a wealth of sales across every day of the show. There certainly was that great ‘buzz’ in the hall that you get with a very successful event, and we are delighted that the show delivered for our visitors, exhibitors and show supporters.” Show visitor Soyeb Ravar director, Ravar Printing, said: “I come to Sign & Digital UK to get new ideas to improve my business, like seeing new
suppliers and products, and getting ideas for new revenue streams. Last year I came to the show to buy a new laminator, this year I’ve come to buy an even better laminator! There’s always something to be excited about. Based on the work I do I think I’ll come back every year as I know it will always be useful. Sign & Digital UK is definitely the best show for what I need.”
EXHIBITOR PRODUCT LAUNCHES Sign & Digital UK also confirmed its reputation as the launching pad for the latest technology and equipment, with exclusive product launches from the industry’s biggest names. These included the new Jetrix KX7-D by InkTec Europe, the latest Mutoh ValueJet 1638X premiered by Colourgen, Ricoh’s unveiling of the new Ricoh Pro L4100 Series large-format roll-to-roll printer and Roland DG UK’s first ever dedicated flatbed printer, the VersaUV LEJ-640F. HP also hosted the first European showing of the new Latex 300 printer series, while Atlantic Tech Services showcased the AEG Voyager Pro 2050 UV printer. QPS also launched a brand new digital ink, the Nazdar 202 Series and Epson introduced its new range of high-speed, four-colour large-format SureColor SC-T printers. Shaun Holdom, business development director for Colorific said: “This has been the best Sign & Digital UK to date! We’ve found customers are educated in what they need and ready to buy, consequently we

A SELLING SHOW Sales were strong across the three days of the show, with i-Sub making a sale in less than 15 minutes on day one. Perfect Colours sold 20 HP Latex 300 series printers, eight HP Designjet Z6200 printers, two Omega 2s and one Durst Rho P10 160. Other high performers included Canon, with the sale of Oce ColorWave 900 to Online Reprographics and Standing Stone who sold 14 machines on the first day. Matthew Perkins, director of Stanford Marsh Group Graphics (SMGG), said: “Our stand was really busy throughout the show and there was a real buzz around a number of the newly launched machines from Mimaki and HP that we had on display. The interest in the 3D printer we exhibited for the second year running at Sign & Digital UK 2014 also garnered significant interest. “Overall, we were delighted with the footfall at the event. We made a significant number of sales on-stand and believe that Sign & Digital UK 2014 was well worth attending. We have already booked space at next year’s show.” Andy Spreag, director, i-Sub Digital, said: “We took our largest ever stand at this year’s Sign & Digital UK in order to launch several industry firsts and we were very successful. Just minutes after the doors opened on day one we sold Europe’s first Mimaki JFX200-2513 LED UV printer – signing the deal with Graphic Station at 10.15am. “Our exclusive Digi-Foil hot foiling system, the Dgen Teleios Black dye sublimation printer and the CadCam Technology Contour Cut laser-cutting system for textile finishing all made their Sign & Digital UK debut on our stand, also attracting plenty of interest. We were rushed off our feet and are certainly planning to exhibit in 2015.” Sign & Digital UK will return on 24-26 March 2015 in halls 17 and 18 at the NEC Birmingham. To enquire about exhibiting in 2015, please contact the show team on 01342 332000, or email signanddigitaluk@fav-house.com www.signanddigitaluk.com
exceeded out targets on the first day. We’ve sold 25 machines already with one exhibition day left. The support we received from organisers before the show this year has also been fantastic. We will be back exhibiting in 2015 without a doubt.” Derek Bower, area sales manager for Leeds Laser Cutting added: “This is the first show we have ever exhibited at and yesterday we had 30 qualified inquiries and today we have approximately the same. We have already had two orders out of that and the possibility of at least four more. It’s been absolutely successful and if tomorrow’s as good as the past two days it has been phenomenal. We will most definitely be back in 2015.”

people we spoke to run their own presses and shops and did not have the time to be checking emails for digital proofs. The new system has reduced the time it takes to place an order and get it to print to about five minutes, whereas before customers would have to wait up to 1 hour for a digital proof to be sent through for approval.’ said Mr Wilmott. The new website also offers live order tracking to help print brokers keep on top of the work they have outsourced but Mr Wilmott believes this is just the beginning for Route One Print. “We took the decision to develop a new website in-house because we wanted more control over what we could do with the site. There are a lot of trade printers out there that are reliable and cheap, but we think more can be done to add value for print resellers through additional features. Now we have the foundations in place, we’ll be looking to constantly build these features in hoping to make it as easy and profitable as possible to outsource print.” All enquiries please contact Jack Wilmott, Channel Manager Tel: 0114 294 5026, email: jack@route1print.co.uk or visit their website: www.route1print.co.uk

INCE ESTABLISHING ITSELF in 2012, Route One Print has come a long way from its humble beginnings as an eBay store. The online trade printer, which specialises in supplying digital, litho and wide format print to a range of resellers, recently launched its new website with an innovative approach to handling customer artwork. The process is simple. Once an order is placed, users can upload their files in the account area, the website will then generate a number of different proofs for customers to sign off. Customers will also be alerted to any size, resolution or colour issues that may exist. The system is something that Jack Wilmott, Manager of Route One Print believes provides a win/win scenario for everyone, speeding up the process of getting files to the press, while reducing overheads to keep prices competitive for trade buyers. ‘Many of the

Persistence pays. Most businesses, are not the stuff of “dragons” legends, but of hard work, consistent approaches, tenacity and high attention to customer service.
M
ARCO RIGALI LEFT school at 16 years of age, by his own admission not the best scholar and far from replete with qualifications. His interest in printing was stimulated by a youth opportunities programme (the old YOP scheme) at a Peterlee printing company as far back as 1979. After five years, he had learnt the trade and started Regal Print on the 9th January 1984 from a small rented shop in Hordon, near Peterlee. Like all new companies, he started small with a single printing press and old guillotine. “What we lacked in equipment, we made up for in knowledge, determination and preparedness to work long hours to build the business” muses Marco. From an initial customer list of a few local companies and the NHS, the company moved twice in a five year period to accommodate a growing customer base and the need for larger, ever more sophisticated equipment to accommodate the needs of business and the wider community alike. The company bought its premises outright and in 2003, with the retirement of Marco`s business partner he owned the business outright and continued to build the order book with his staff. The good times and the recessional times have

not phased Marco. His belief in hard work, honesty of approach and customer service has never diminished since those early days. “What is essential, is that we react to a modern, evolving market space making sure the customer gets what they need”. He adds, “Even in the electronic age, top quality printing is vital to a company`s corporate image, it needs to be high quality, durable and delivered in the right place at the right time”. Marco is not afraid of tight deadlines and flexible working to meet the needs of customers. “The printing gets more high tech, the finish is more sophisticated the graphics more detailed, but the printing business stands or falls on solid customer services, good relationships with one’s customers, understanding the specific needs of individual customers and an overall “can do” attitude”.
Regal Print’s shop front in the early days
This persistence has earned Marco the affectionate title of the “NCR king” NCR, or, No Carbon Required remains the documentation of choice for many organisations that need to rapidly generate multiple copies of documentation that is hand written on the spot. “Many companies simply don’t understand that this simple yet valuable tool massively streamlines their processes, even in a world of tablets and smart phones” says Marco. “Whatever the client needs, the ‘client journey’ starts with a telephone call, preferably a meeting where we can discuss face to face exactly what is required and make sure we get things right for the customer first time, on time and every time after that!” asserts Marco. With this business ethic, we can look forward to the next 30 years of Regal Print`s service to business and the public. Check out the Regal insert in this months magazine.

Beach trip with butterflies
ENVIRONMENTAL Photo Festival Horizonte Zingst showcased “Butterfly” large format prints directly on the beach of the Baltic Sea coast Everyone enjoying butterflies, beach walks and impressive fine art prints should have put a mark in their calendars for the Environmental Photo Festival “Horizonte Zingst”. As a long time partner Neschen AG once again joined in the exhibition: This year the coating specialist from Bückeburg delivered digital print media and protective laminates for the open air installation. In addition, Neschen experts supported the exhibition with their specialist know how in photography and digital printing. Among other impressive outdoor installations the XXL-picture show “Butterfly”, was of particular interest and one of the main attractions of the event. Butterfly images from Jan Michael Hosan align themselves to the overall theme “be careful”. It was the leading theme of the exhibition that with huge and great fine art prints, each three by three metres, awareness was raised among the visitors for nature and environmental protection. The central message: ‘Dealing responsibly with nature’. “Horizonte Zingst focuses on photography for 10 days. The spectrum ranges from moving nature photos right up to international photo art”, Klaus Tiedge, curator, said. “The scope for encounters is a conceptually integral part of this festival. The whole place and magnificent landscape that surrounds it, is all about photography.” The open air installations, directly by the water, always attract special attention. Since the exhibits at these places are exposed to extreme weather conditions, the digital prints must meet very high quality standards. Therefore they are protected by the Neschen laminate “filmolux performance matt”. This premium quality high performance media provides strong UV protection and has an outdoor life of up to two years (even without edge sealing). Due to lamination with Neschen protection foil the exhibits receive a satin surface finish and mechanical protection. As the foil diffuses reflections, visitors are not dazzled when looking at the exhibits, even in strong sunshine. The superior quality and long durability of the large format prints prompted Sylt, last year, to borrow and install the large format photos from Zingst on their island, too. For all fine art prints Neschen digital print substrate “solvoprint performance 80” is used by the organisers. The self-adhesive white glossy PVC media provides high colour brilliance and photorealistic print quality. Building new profits in print THE sleek and often complex profiles of modern buildings offer limited decorative possibilities, both on exterior facades and in interiors. Today, however, there is a practical way to overcome the ‘sameness’ of today’s architecture: patented Numericoat technology from professional coating innovators and image management company VisioTechnic. Visio-Technic Numericoat is an innovative synthesis of digital print and industrial surface coatings, and it delivers an advanced professional solution for the creation of customised, durable, architectural graphics, signs, displays, images, and colours on a variety of today’s building construction materials. ‘Starting with a standard plain substrate – metal, glass, or composite’, explains Visio-Technic’s Commercial and Marketing Director, Martin Saunier-Plumaz, ‘our in-house production team take a digitallygenerated image of the customer’s choice, and capture it on the substrate within Numericoat’s two special layers of spray-applied thermo-hardening primers. The Numericoat base layer provides the anchorage for the flatbed inkjet-printed image, and the top overlamination coat gives it perfect protection. Not only is it fire- and UV-resistant, it also has anti-graffiti functionality.’ ‘Perhaps most important of all for the construction industry, Numericoat panels come with a ten-year durability guarantee – true confirmation that this is genuinely a highlydurable solution’, says Mr. Saunier-Plumaz. The versatility of the flatbed inkjet’s movable printhead makes it practical to print on to very large panels – up to 6.5 metres long and 2 metres wide – using UV-cured acrylic inks to deliver a high-definition four-colour CMYK printed image. UV inks deliver benefits at various levels, as Mr. SaunierPlumaz explains. ‘They dry very quickly at ambient pressure – in seconds, rather than the 30 minutes it takes at 200ºC for traditional solvent-based inks, lowering the production costs. UV inks also offer good flexibility and good adhesion to the substrate. That makes shipping the panels easier, and makes it possible for our clients to cut and bend (if necessary) the coated panels at the application site. And of course UV inks’ environmental credentials are excellent – low odour, no solvents, reduced energy usage. That’s important.’ In fact, Numericoat’s creative use of UV inks gained VisioTechnic the prestigious Innovation Award in the 2013 RadTech Europe Awards, presented biennially by the European Association for UV/EB Curing Technology.
‘Numericoat is not an experimental technique’, says Mr. Saunier-Plumaz. ‘We worked on its development at Visio-Technic for many years, and commercialised it eight years ago. Since then, the system has proved itself in an enormous variety of applications, from corporate company headquarters to theme parks, sports arenas, factories, and outdoor and indoor frescos.’ Formally partnered since 2011 by steel giant ArcelorMittal, who now market Numericoat products under their Viso brand, across their global network, Numericoat is Qualicoat licensed for homogeneity with aluminium varnishes and coatings, and certified to the ISO9001 quality standard and to the EOTA ETAG 002 agreement for adhesive exterior window systems. It is RATP M1 fireresistant. UV and EB radiation curing are today well known processing technologies in many industrial segments such as wood and metal product finishing, packaging, and automotive components, as well as in graphic imaging applications. David Helsby, President of RadTech Europe, says that this wide acceptance is ‘testimony to the robust nature of the cure that can be achieved, as well as the elimination of VOC emissions, significant reductions in energy consumption, and of course time and cost savings.’ In printing and graphic arts applications, he adds, ‘UV curing’s faster on-press turn-around coupled with excellent ink adhesion to the print substrate are high-profile field of continuing innovation today, with traditional high-energy lamps beginning to be replaced with “cold” UV LED lamp arrays on leading-edge high-speed printing presses. Visio-Technic’s Innovation Award for Numericoat highlights another new step on the ladder for radiation curing.’ For more information: www.visio-technic.com and www.radtech-europe.com

SEA LEGS STORY Once upon a time there was a famous sea captain. This captain was very successful at what he did; for years he guided merchant ships all over the world. Never did stormy seas or pirates get the best of him. He was admired by his crew and fellow captains. However, there was one thing different about this captain. Every morning he went through a strange ritual. He would lock himself in his quarters and open a small safe. In the safe was an envelope with a piece of paper inside. He would stare at the paper for a minute, and then lock it back up. Afterwards, he would go about his daily duties. For years this went on, and his crew became very curious. Was it a treasure map? Was it a letter from a long lost love? Everyone speculated about the contents of the strange envelope. One day the captain died at sea. After laying the captain’s body to rest, the first mate led the entire crew into the captain’s quarters. He opened the safe, got the envelope, and opened it and... The first mate turned pale and showed the paper to the others. Four words were on the paper; two lines with two words each: Port Left, Starboard Right

OH, TO BE TEN AGAIN A man asked his wife, ‘What would you most like for your birthday?’ She said, ‘I’d love to be ten again.’ On the morning of her birthday, he got her up bright and early and off they went to a theme park. He put her on every ride in the park--the Death Slide, The Screaming Loop, the Wall of Fear. Everything there was, she had a go. She staggered out of the theme park five hours later, her head reeling and her stomach upside down. Into McDonalds they went, where she was given a Double Big Mac with extra fries and a strawberry shake. Then off to a theater to see Star Wars, more burgers, popcorn, coke and sweets. At last she staggered home with her husband and collapsed into bed. Her husband leaned over and asked, ‘Well, dear, what was it like being ten again?’ One eye opened and she groaned, ‘Actually, I meant my dress size.’
AMERICAN BIRD STORY This farmer has about 200 hens, but no rooster and he wants chicks. So, he goes down the road to the next farmer and asks if he has a rooster which he would sell. The other farmer says, ‘Yeah, I’ve got this great rooster named Chuck. He’ll service every chicken you got, no problem’. Well, Chuck the rooster costs a lot of money, but the farmer decides he’d be worth it, so, he buys Chuck. The farmer takes Chuck home and sets him down in the barnyard, first, giving rooster a pep talk, ‘Chuck, I want you to pace yourself now. You’ve got a lot of chickens to service here, and you cost me a lot of money. So, take your time and have some fun’ the farmer said, with a chuckle. The farmer is distraught -worried that his expensive rooster won’t even last 24 hours. Sure enough, the farmer goes to bed and wakes up the next day, to find Chuck dead as a doorknob - stone cold in the middle of the yard with buzzards circling overhead. The farmer, saddened by the loss of such a colourful and expensive animal, shakes his head and says, ‘Oh Chuck, I told you to pace yourself. I tried to get you to slow down, now look what you’ve done to yourself.’ Chuck opens one eye, nods toward the buzzards circling in the sky and says: ‘Go away, they’re getting closer...’
