Assembly Direct Mail Selects Xerox Again PRINT and direct mail specialist Assembly Direct Mail (ADM) has invested in a Xerox Colour C75 Pressand two Xerox Nuvera 144 EA Series Production Systems, as part of an ongoing investment in new digital print production technology. Over the past year ADM has undergone a complete hardware refresh, growing its business significantly and with Xerox equipment exclusively. ADM, which produces mail shots in large volumes down to short-run bespoke direct mail for a range of sectors, expects that the equipment refresh will result in a 50 per cent increase in the number of personalised letters it is able to produce. “Following an evaluation of the equipment available in the market, Xerox was our first choice yet again,” said Paul Hines, production manager at ADM. “With Xerox equipment already in place,

we knew this was a trusted solution that could be integrated seamlessly with existing technology. The additional capacity it enables will help us to produce an output in excess of a million personalised items a week.” The new Xerox print production technology will be installed alongside the addition of a new camera matching system for the firm’s enclosing lines. “Assembly Direct Mail has seen impressive success in recent years, now providing one of the largest hand fulfilment floors in the South East. This latest investment will ensure the firm has the technology it needs to continue its successful growth over the coming years, providing its customers with the highest quality products, while increasing its capacity and efficiency,” said Mike Holyoake, general manager, Graphic Communications Operations, Xerox U.K.

The Xerox Colour C75 Press can run up to 76 pages per minute on uncoated stocks and up to 51 ppm on coated. Morgana Join APME 2015 Conference MORGANA Systems, the manufacturer of equipment for digital finishing, exhibited at this years Association of Print Managers in Education (APME) conference, which took place from Sunday May 31 May through to Wednesday June 3 at Shrigley Hall, Macclesfield, Cheshire. The conference provided a full and topical programme to stimulate debate and to provide real developmental sessions that keep APME members informed of current trends across design and print amidst the culture of change that will never quite be “business as usual”. For its part, the post-press for digital print specialist showed a range of the latest finishing equipment suited to such customers, including BM60 compact bookletmaker, shown with the PL104 square back option, the recently introduced AeroCut Nano small format cutting device, and the Bindomatic 7000 thermal binder for fast and efficient finishing of documents.

CONFERENCE THEME REPORTED “A CULTURE OF CHANGE” As a vital cog in the wheel, university print and creative teams must adapt. They must provide new and creative solutions to standards that are higher than ever before, and be certain that they are are providing cost-effective services that equal value for money. Universities are dynamic, living breathing environments that push the frontiers of knowledge. They inspire. Universities also have to balance the books and generate surpluses to support world-changing research as well as the costs of teaching and learning. Many APME members have to manage far more than traditional print

or copying. Together they span photography, video, creative design, scanning, and distance learning for example, and are likely to want to branch out further if they can demonstrate value. From 2015, universities in England will be able to recruit as many students as they like. Competition between institutions nationally and globally is accelerating. Innovators will stand the best chances of recruiting the best students, attracting/retaining the best staff and offering the best experiences. The stakes are high. Printed marketing materials must stand out and be produced to higher standards that ever before. Commenting on the decision to show the company’s products at the APME event, Ray Hillhouse, Vice President Offline Business at Morgana Systems, said: “Along with the continued growth in digital print, demands on post-press production in the education sector have also increased. This event has given Morgana a tremendous opportunity to both show and discuss our latest products for this ever more sophisticated market. It was a delight to meet with both old friends and new from the APME membership.” Full details of the APME 2015 Conference can be found at: http://apme.org.uk/events-and-conferences/forthcoming-conference/ www.morgana.co.uk

Blake cheers St Margaret’s Atlantic Yacht Challenge AFTER seven months of navigating across the Atlantic Ocean, the St Margaret’s Hospice Atlantic Challenge Yacht finally docked in Portsmouth harbour to the cheers of Blake employees who watched the yacht sail in. The Atlantic Challenge of a Lifetime, launched by St Margaret’s Hospice on October 16 last year, saw adventure-seekers from across the UK covering 9,142 nautical miles. Sailors and non-sailors alike had the opportunity to take part in one or more of the eight legs setting off from Portsmouth last autumn. As a long standing supporter of St Margaret’s Hospice, Blake, the UK envelope supplier, was excited about supporting this incredible adventure. Tim Browning, Director at Blake, commented: “Blake has a strong corporate responsibility ethic and we support St Margaret’s Hospice because we want to give back to the local community. “Each year we ask our employees to nominate several charities for consideration and we tend to focus on those that support our local community. We recognise that our lives could be affected by the need for specialist hospice care and some of our staff have had a personal experience of St Margaret’s. “It was fantastic to see the St Margaret’s Yacht come into Portsmouth after seven months of following the journeys of the crew-members who took part in this amazing challenge. We are thrilled to have been a part of this epic adventure and to support such an amazing cause.” The exciting voyage supported the fantastic work of St Margaret’s Hospice, a charity committed to

providing specialist care to those with terminal or life-limiting illnesses, motor neurone disease and chronic lung disease. Interim CEO of St Margaret’s Hospice, Ann Lee comments, “To make this challenge possible we had to be inventive in the way we engaged with supporters to help raise the funds needed for those who come to St Margaret’s Hospice with their own challenges every day. One of the ways we do this is by helping supporters to discover new ways to experience life’s challenges in a

memorable way. “These ‘challenges’ are not holidays - they are real opportunities which add depth and experience to the lives of those taking part. Sometimes they can be tough and endurance is required! The people that undertake these challenges often find a new depth of understanding and value of life that helps them appreciate why our work is so very important and why we work hard to make every moment count. www.blake-envelopes.com

The Pen Warehouse raises £1200 for Nepal

EMPLOYEES at Aldershot based The Pen Warehouse have raised over £1200.00 to donate to a Nepalese charity. The workforce reflects the vibrant diversity of the local community and, as many colleagues are from Nepalese families, the tragedy in Nepal had a very personal resonance across the company. The money raised will be given to Maiti Nepal (http://www.maitinepal.org/, an established charity in Nepal which works exclusively with children and women. The charity is currently sheltering about 200 children, mostly victims of the earthquake, and they urgently need help to buy basic necessities such as tents, food, clothing and bottled water. The Pen Warehouse has also donated £500 to the Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC). Sunita Gurung, who helped to co-ordinate the collection at The Pen Warehouse says: “It’s very distressing to see the suffering in Nepal. We wanted to do something to help those who have been so badly affected by the earthquake. Colleagues and our MD, Neil Cleere, have been very generous and for that we will be forever grateful”. www.pens.co.uk

Baker Goodchild infographics show BIRMINGHAM based direct mail fulfilment and print management services providerBaker Goodchild, has produced a series of new animated infographics videos, illustrating how printers and print management companies can create the perfect printed mailshot, by combining the power of direct mail with new technology to create the ideal, bespoke mailing document. The direct mail fulfilment company is known for being at the forefront of technology developments in the use of direct mail, and hopes that by illustrating how new technologies, such as the use of Augmented Reality (AR) and QR codes, personalised URLs and Google AdWords within a printed marketing campaign or mailshot, can all help to improve the delivery and impact of the printed material and message therein. Other items such as NFCs (Near Field Codes) and USB web keys when embedded into a campaign can also be used to give the direct mail campaign or mailshot that definitive edge. This can create an improved interaction with customers, adding a wow factor and encouraging recipients to engage with through the delivered message(s). Baker Goodchild hopes that through the use of the new infographics videos it can show how easy and simple it can be to integrate any or all

of these technologies into a campaign’s material. This in turn will then help printers realise that the use of technology within print can help a mailshot or campaign to stand out from the pack, and make it a campaign to be remembered, and hopefully reach and impact upon more customers. So whether it is a flyer, postcard, document or brochure, by using new technology within the printed matter Baker Goodchild believes print and technology work hand in hand to deliver improved, impacting results. The integration of new technologies can also be used to monitor results of a campaign more closely, making real time monitoring possible, and creating improved response rates and return on investment. Commenting on the new animated technology infographics, Baker Goodchild Managing Director, Lorraine Burnell, stated, “We believe that by showing through our new infographics, how easy and simple it can be to create a more effective, enhanced, direct mail campaign, will help to generate more leads for our clients, and help their campaign and message create more of an impact when it lands in a customer’s hands.” Baker Goodchild currently provides print, fulfilment and postage services for a variety of national and international clients, mailing both

across the UK and overseas. Being an independent specialist provider of bulk mail fulfilment and postal services, Baker Goodchild has invested in specialist bespoke mailing solutions and software, which enable them to be at the forefront of using new technologies within print for direct mail marketing campaigns. Based in the heart of Birmingham, close to the city centre, Baker Goodchild is a privately-owned company with over 20 years extensive experience in providing print, mail and postage solutions, throughout the UK and Internationally. Morgana Release BM500, the 200-Page Bookletmaker MORGANA Systems Ltd, a leading manufacturer of equipment for digital finishing, has introduced a new addition to its leading bookletmaking range with the release of the BM500 – a machine capable of producing booklets of up to 200 pages. With the continued growth in digital print, demands on post-press production have also increased. This latest Morgana machine is an offline adaptation of a very successful in-line solution sold via Xerox and Ricoh to produce booklets with the mid-production digital print engines supplied by those companies. Commenting on this latest addition to Morgana’s already comprehensive range of bookletmakers, Ray Hillhouse, Sales & Marketing Director at Morgana Systems, said: “We have seen significant demand for the in-line version of this machine through our partnerships with the print engine manufacturers. There is a definite need for higher page count booklets and booklets created using much thicker paper stocks. This pushes the capabilities of our current set of bookletmakers, which are primarily focused at producing up to 30 sheets of 80gsm. “It therefore made sense for us to offer this as an off-line solution. We have linked it to our recently launched AF602 feeder, incorporating dual highcapacity bins, to provide the market with a unique solution to higher page count booklets at a very cost effective price.”

The BM500 can be supplied as a stand-alone hand-fed unit, or linked with either AF602 or other popular feeders in the Morgana range. There is also a BM350 available, which is built on a similar platform and can produce up to 35 sheets of 80gsm – giving booklets of up to 140 pages. The BM500 will be the first Morgana bookletmaker to incorporate the new full-colour touchscreen interface that gives very clear visible instructions to the operator on all machine functions. The bookletmaker can also be supplied with a lead edge trimmer and with the Morgana

Squarefold option for flat edged books. Commenting further Hillhouse added: “The Squarefold option is a great addition to the system when producing thicker booklets – it gives a really great, perfect bound look to the book and offers the facility to display print added to the spine. “The full-colour interface is yet another step forward in our attempts to offer the most operator friendly equipment. We anticipate that this design will be incorporated into all new machine releases.” Full details of Morgana’s product line-up can be found at: www.morgana.co.uk

Xerox and Fotoba Establish Speed Benchmark A new solution from Xerox and Fotoba provides the industry’s fastest production of full-bleed and multi-up posters, banners and signage, at speeds as fast as five seconds per page. The Fotoba FHS42 Cutter runs in-line with the Xerox Wide Format IJP 2000 to increase automation and accelerate delivery speeds. For printers, that means opportunities to improve their profitability and to become the go-to shop for quick turnarounds. The cutter has one horizontal and as many as four vertical trimming blades for 1, 2, or 3 up fullbleed finishing. The system reads embedded crop marks on each print to align and continuously adjust its cutting blocks to deliver cuts accurate to 0.04 inches (1 millimetre). Xerox partnered with Fotoba to customise the cutter to match key specifications of the IJP 2000, including synchronising speeds at 4,520 square feet (420 square metres) per hour and qualifying the same wide range of media. These include matt coated, photo gloss, satin, blueback and backlit/ stoplight films, enabling printers to offer their customers a wide range of applications. In addition to fast turnarounds of finished prints, the cutter’s flexible trimming options let shops produce any size job without having to stock

multiple roll sizes or make frequent roll changes, saving time and money. Its self-sharpening blades also minimise maintenance requirements. The IJP 2000 and Fotoba FHS42 Cutter will be on display at FESPA (Federation of European Screen

Printers Associations) 2015 in Cologne, May 18-21. The Fotoba FHS42 Cutter is available worldwide from Xerox wide format resellers as a retrofit or an optional add-on. www.xerox.co.uk

Mimaki printer/cutter delivers value and peace of mind HYBRID Services Ltd has announced that the new Mimaki CJV150-75 integrated solvent printer/cutter is to be offered at a promotional price of just £6,995 through its authorised reseller network. The state of the art 810mm wide machine will also benefit from a two year Gold warranty and a free starter pack comprising over 3.5 litres of ink as part of a promotion due to run until the end of July 2015. “The CJV150-75 is ‘entry level’ in size only,” says national sales manager, Sign & Graphics at Hybrid; John de la Roche. “A combination of unparalleled speed and print quality set it apart from alternative printer/cutters, delivering vastly greater productivity, with easier usability and powerful features.” “Companies looking to make their first step into wide format printing, or to upgrade their old eco-solvent machine will find the Mimaki a breath of fresh air. As equally geared to providing a versatile and inexpensive to run printer for the start-up company or a hugely capable workhorse for more experienced installations – the CJV150-75 takes it all in its stride.” Offering significant performance gains over its predecessor and other printer/cutters, the Mimaki is ideal for producing signage, vehicle graphics, banners and point of sale printers as well as stickers, decals and labels with its integrated – and unique – die cut feature. Additionally, the marginally greater media width sets it apart from other similarly sized units in its sector as it is able to accept material to deliver industry standard sized pull-up banners. “The ability to run 800mm wide material through the Mimaki means customers can add more revenue streams to their business,” says de la Roche. “A printer at this price that delivers so many different applications is an invaluable asset for any sign maker or print business. The two year warranty

ensures complete peace of mind, and the starter ink pack enables customers to effectively print hundreds of metres of jobs for the cost of the media alone.” Customers looking to take advantage of this offer can view the new Mimaki CJV150 range through their authorised reseller or by contacting Hybrid on 01270 501900. Spandex new ImagePerfect magnetic materials SPANDEX has launched a new collection of high quality ImagePerfect printable substrates for use in magnetic applications, enabling the costeffective production of highly versatile printed graphics for a wide range of retail point of sale, signage and display applications, as well as smaller promotional items. The new ImagePerfect range comprises three products: • IP 2922 Magnetic Film Premium • IP 2923 Magnetic Film Premium Heavy • IP 2924 Ferro Film Central to the appeal of this new ImagePerfect collection is the versatility of magnetic substrates to produce reusable and sustainable sign and display solutions that significantly reduce lifecycle cost compared with conventional signage products. Finished magnetic graphics can be transported to the client site in cardboard tubes, then simply rolled out and applied by instore personnel, removing the complexity, delays and cost of professional installation, and allowing for rapid changes to displays and promotional messaging. IP 2922 Magnetic Film Premium (300 micron) and IP 2923 Magnetic Film Premium Heavy (500 micron) give customers a choice of material thicknesses for standard or heavier duty requirements. Both products have a white matt surface enabling photo-quality printing, and are optimised for use on large-format digital inkjet printers with a range of solvent, eco-solvent and UV-cured inks. Both films can be applied to almost any steel-based surface, enabling graphics producers to create easy-to-apply graphics and visual merchandising materials that can be quickly and cost-effectively refreshed as promotions, campaigns or decorative themes change. IP 2924 Ferro Film is a white ferrous print media coated with micro-iron particles to create a strong magnetic attraction. A thin, smooth, flexible and printable option, IP 2924 is particularly suited for use in point of sale and point of purchase signage systems. M517 completes the new collection as a match-component, high quality, self-adhesive magnetic sheet for use with IP 2924 Ferro Film. With a brown

top layer and UV-hardened under-coating, the flexible sheets can be overlaid to almost any material to create a strong and effective magnetic surface. The entire collection of ImagePerfect magnetic products can be score cut or contour cut, either manually or with a CAD/CAM plotter. This enables users to create custom shapes, and makes the materials suitable for cut-to-size applications such as fridge magnets and shelf-edge markings and displays. “Signmakers and graphics producers are always looking for products that will give them new creative capabilities while also delivering cost-efficient solutions for their clients,” explains Steve Jacques, ImagePerfect Category Manager at Spandex. “The launch of our new magnetics collection allows Spandex customers to respond to the evolving demands of their clients for flexible, premium quality signage and visual merchandising that can be easily updated in the shortest possible timeframe.” For more information on the new collection of magnetic substrates, which are available from Spandex today, contact 0800 77 26 33. www.spandex.com.

Drytac easy to apply Spot On film DRYTAC Europe - manufacturer of self-adhesive materials for the print, label and industrial markets, has announced the immediate UK availability of its Spot On film which was launched at Sign & Digital UK 2015 on Antalis’s stand. Suitable for short-term indoor graphics applications, Spot On is 100µ (4 mil) high quality, ink receptive printable vinyl, developed specifically for the creation of vibrant graphics requiring quick and easy application and removal. No special tools are required when applying the vinyl – not even a squeegee. Spot On is ideal for short-term applications such as POP and retail signage, trade show and exhibition graphics as well as office interiors. Key to the simplicity of application is a ‘dot pattern’ printed pressure sensitive polyacrylate adhesive which allows the printable film to be easily applied – bubble free – on a wide variety of smooth interior surfaces including walls, windows, glass and more. Once installed, the film can be repositioned and – if stored correctly – reused. When removed, the film leaves virtually no residue on the mounting substrate. Available in clear matte, white matte and white gloss versions, Spot On is printable

by solvent, eco-solvent, HP Latex and UV inkjet techniques. Steve Broad, Sales Director for Drytac Europe, comments: “Spot On has been developed in direct response to our customers’ demands for a high quality printable vinyl that is easy to apply and remove. The layout of the adhesive virtually eliminates air bubbles and wrinkles in finished graphics and ensures that almost anyone can

apply the finished graphics. “The new vinyl further expands our comprehensive range of solutions making Drytac a great range for customers and distributors across the globe.” For further information on Drytac and the availability of its leading range of films and adhesives, please visit www.drytac.co.uk or email Steve Broad on SteveBroad@drytac.com.

Ricoh to stand out at The Print Show Digital manufacturing giant Ricoh has become the latest major name in print to sign up to exhibit at the inaugural edition of The Print Show this year.

D

UE TO TAKE place at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre (NEC) from October 13th to 15th, The Print Show will serve as an opportunity for companies in the UK and Ireland to not only view some of the latest technology in print, but also find out how they can become more profitable and efficient moving forward. Since its launch in November last year, the event has already attracted a number of high-profile exhibitors, with floor space at the show filling up fast. The likes of Manroland Sheetfed, Grafityp and Premier Paper have already signed up for the show, while organisers have confirmed the list will continue to grow during the build up to the event. Ricoh has become the latest major name in the print sector to commit to the show by confirming its attendance. Known throughout the print world as a key manufacturer of digital technologies, Ricoh will use The Print Show as a platform to showcase various equipment in the UK for the first time. Print innovations due to be on display include the Ricoh Pro C9100 series new generation of durable high volume digital presses, Ricoh Pro C7100 series of digital colour cut sheet presses, the Ricoh Pro C5100 digital production printer, and the Ricoh Pro L4100 series latex, roll-to-roll large-format printer. Gareth Parker, strategic marketing manager for production print at Ricoh UK and Ireland said “We’ve spent the last two or three years getting closer to our customers at small boutique events to make sure we understand them and they understand us. We’ve come to a moment in time where we will continue that motion of getting closer to our customers with smaller events, but The Print Show represents an opportunity that takes this message to an audience that may be captivated by other providers and technology providers. “It allows us to speak to similar and new customers about the stories that we’ve developed and engaged with over the past few years. This includes how they can become more efficient, more productive and make more use of their resources. It doesn’t just sit with our technology, but also how they

can bring technologies together with additional options to help make it profitable for their business.” He praised organisers of The Print Show for identifying a gap in the market for an event like this, stating that the show is a “well-timed” event for the UK industry. He added “When we talk about the impact of a print show, particularly combined with the rest of the marketing mix that manufacturers like us would probably consider, it is a good time. “People should consider coming along because it doesn’t represent a massive stake in their time as they can have a lot of information given to them in one place. The show is definitely well timed and should be on your agenda to put it in your diary. “Our general message from Ricoh is that no matter who you are, coming together to see how the industry is building post-recession in a digital economy is going to be a point in time that is worth looking at. It’s a good time to come and see how you can be more productive.” Chris Davies, event director of The Print Show, also spoke of his delight at securing the signature of Ricoh for the show. Davies said: “There’s no doubting that Ricoh is one of the biggest names in not only the UK industry, but the global print market. To have them on board for our first show is a massive boost for the whole team. In fact, since we first announced that they would be at the show, we’ve had a number of enquiries from other companies keen to secure their place at the show in October. “Having spoken to Gareth and the Ricoh team, there’s no doubt that they are completely behind our blueprint for the future theme. There’s no better time to come and see what technology is on offer to help you improve your business and take advantage of an improving economy.” Building for the future - In further support of the event’s commitment to the future of print, training and education organisation Proskills UK has signed up to exhibit at the show through its popular PrintIT! initiative. PrintIT! provides talented youngsters with a route into the industry through various learning initiatives and competitions. Having identified The Print Show as a platform at which it can promote its own commitment to the future of the industry, Proskills will not only have a major presence at the event, but also invite the hottest new talent in print to see some of the latest technology on offer to the market. Jonathan Ledger, chief executive officer of Proskills UK, said: “Proskills is very excited to be taking part in the very first Print Show. Our PrintIT! Schools Programme relies on the industry for support and these shows play an integral part for the programme to reach more employers. “It is important for Proskills to not only represent the industry, but to also bring more young people to industry, which is why we are thrilled to be running a mini competition in line with the show and are expecting exceptional entries from our thousands of registered students. “The UK’s printing industries are on the rise again and continue to be an exciting career choice for the next generation. This show will help employers to grow further and we’re very pleased to be part of it.” Event director Davies added: “We’ve always been big admirers of PrintIT! and it’s great that they will support the show by running a new competition to help youngsters get into print. The Print Show is all about building for the future and ensuring that our industry carries on performing for many years. “What better way to do this than by attracting some of the most talented youngsters in the country to our industry? I’m really looking forward to seeing what they can come up with ahead of the show.” Tel: 0117 980 5049, email: page@theprintshow.co .uk, visit: www.theprintshow.co.uk or find them on Twitter: @theprintshow

Heidelberg Open House Invite

D2D Dedicated To Digital is the theme of Heidelberg’s specialist open house that takes place at its National Showroom in Brentford from 10am to 4pm on Wednesday 17 June. Heidelberg will launch its Digital Front End (DFE) and all UK quick print professionals are invited.

D

RAWING ON 25 years of workflow experience Heidelberg has designed this simple and effective interface to the new Linoprint digital press products. The DFE accurately controls print quality, colour and ensures consistent output performance. All QPP readers interested in digital printing solutions are welcome to attend just book in first at http://www.heievents.co.uk “Our dedicated Heidelberg Digital Front End will be a key differentiator in the market. The renderer mirrors the dots laid down on a plate for litho applications which means the colour and quality match will be first rate,” says Jim Todd, sales director. “Prepress and digital workflows will be brought together into one common interface. Heidelberg will link the Linoprint CV and CP devices to a Management Information System (Tharstern) and Web2Print solution (ROI 360). The Heidelberg Prinect workflow will calculate the appropriate level of automation based on the value of order, customer relationship and quality of the supplied artwork. This combined and integrated Front End reduces errors, improves results, brings a noticeably faster job flow and builds in business sense and transparency to the digital process.” Heidelberg has already launched the Linoprint CP and CV models with great success and several of the new models have been delivered. Demand for demonstrations is running high, so Heidelberg was clear that a digital printing open house would be fully justified. The Linoprint CP (CP stands for Commercial Performance) and Linoprint CV (Commercial Value) supersede the C901 and C751 models. The presses

offer speed and versatility, the ability to handle a range of stocks and a diversity of formats including a six page A4 or A4 landscape as well as offering the option to add an opaque white, clear or spot varnish coating. The first company to purchase the Linoprint CP was Pensord Press and the first with the Linoprint CV was Diguru.

Three jobs will be produced during the two key demonstrations (scheduled for 11am and 2.30pm): a simple two page leaflet; a complex hybrid job with a digital cover and litho text; and a “bomb”, the term for orders which combine print and other products such as a box of golf balls. Heidelberg experts led by Chris Matthews (digital business manager) and John Murphy (Prinect products specialist) will be on hand to discuss general or specific enquires. Partners joining the D2D open house in June are ROI 360 (web to print), Tharstern (MIS), Polar (cutting solutions), Morgana (finishing) and the Magic Touch (combining print and other products to add sales value). Lunch will be available as well as light refreshments during the day. For further information please contact: Chris Matthews (07827937069) or John Murphy (07778749253) of Heidelberg UK.

Seeing is believing

At the beginning of this year Martin Christie noted social media was locked in controversy, but it wasn’t the election that was the centre of debate. It was the argument over the colour of a dress. And it was not like the difference of opinion on a shade of colour, it was a conflicting view of two completely different colour combinations.

I

T ALL BEGAN innocently enough when a mother sent her daughter and prospective sonin-law a picture of the dress she planned to wear at their wedding. They completely disagreed on the colour, and passed it on to friends to collect opinions. In the way of things on social networking, this investigation soon became viral and shortly more than two million people had expressed a judgement on the comparison. Now this wasn’t a simple matter of people seeing colour cast from viewing on different computer screens and tablets — that’s something we are familiar with on a daily basis. This challenge exposed something more fundamental in what people actually see, or what they believe they see. Something that touches both science and even philosophy. And if you’re wondering what relevance this has to digital imaging bear with me. Regular readers will know I often wander into territory that may at first appear a little obscure, but usually turns out to be a little nearer to home than you might expect. What caused such consternation over the dress controversy was people couldn’t believe how so many people could differ on what they were actually seeing, thinking it might be some sort of magic trick. The trick in fact is not magic but an optical illusion. The colour of the dress does not change, but the way that colour is translated person to person does. This is not just a matter of the illumination — the light falling upon a colour. We are familiar with that if you have ever had to send a customer out into daylight to check the actual colour of a print. This touches the very way individual brains work and how perception of colour can vary from one individual to another. Colour blindness is an obvious condition, but a colour bias is more subtle. The fact that this was such a stark example of the possible differences was what caused a sensation. The original dress is in fact black and blue, but half of the people who looked at it saw it as white and gold. How could such a dramatic contrast be possible? There were plenty of amateur opinions but it was down to the boffins to explain rather smugly that it was something they knew about all along, and even some philosophers got in on the act. The phenomenon is related to what is called colour consistency, that is a characteristic of the human brain to retain an impression of colour hue regardless of actual light level. This is an evolutionary trait based on the need to identify priorities like food and predators. So if you couldn’t

spot that the thing in the shadows with spots was a sabre toothed tiger you were unlikely to be passing your genes on to the next generation. Effectively the brain filters out things that aren’t important in favour of those that are. Many animals have enhanced colour consistency, like bees for example, because pretty well the only important thing in their world is to spot flowers. This colour consistency apparently varies from person to person, including, in extreme, actual colour blindness. Our eyes have colour receptors, called rods and cones, that filter red, green and blue light, and the brain decides which one of the three, or combination, will dominate the resulting vision. In a test the actual dress, rather than a digital representation was put in front of several large audiences, and they all observed a significant difference in what they saw, or what they thought they saw. Overall the public poll seem equally divided on whether it was black and blue or gold and cream. Puzzling but maybe not quite so startling for those of us who work in print and produce images from customers digital files and suffer the ongoing debate over what is the ‘correct’ colour. How do you know if a customer sees what you see, let alone distinguish any alterations. At this point, of course, the philosophers stick their nose in and say how do we know that the world is not all grey anyway and that any colour is the figment of our imagination. That really does open a can of worms, and the conundrum is compounded by introducing an electronic brain into the equation.

There is a certain irony in the fact that the eye to brain process is actually mimicked now by digital cameras and scanners which have RGB photocells and make decisions on the actual colour by way of the processor or software in use. So the possibilities for variance are multiplied. The visible spectrum, what we should see, contains billions of colours. A computer monitor or tablet can display millions, but even a high quality printer can only work in thousands so that puts it in perspective. The printing process involves adding minute pigments of colour, and the more colour is added, the denser the image tends to become. Then you have the matter of the light being reflected back from those very pigments which can vary depending open time of day and light source. Oh, and last but by no means least the colour and reflectivity of the paper on which it is printed. All are part of the issue. So the next time a customer starts to argue about the correct colour just try baffling them with science. Or philosophy.

FROM THE DARK ROOM TO LIGHTROOM

ASSUMING that there is such a thing as colour in the real world, one of the regular issues is sorting it for print, and one of the most useful tools for sorting it is Adobe Lightroom. As mentioned last month Adobe has released Version Six which is available as a standalone, or as part of the Creative Cloud. At just over a hundred pounds it’s good value compared to Photoshop itself, and a bargain combined as a photo package on subscription at just over eight pounds a month. Obviously it doesn’t have the design capabilities of Photoshop but what it does do, it does really well. A number of fans were disappointed that the new version didn’t have more toys in the box, and only appears to be a small upgrade. But to be fair to have added more tools would have risked competing with its bigger, more capable brother. Although there aren’t many obvious improvements on the new version over number five, which I’ve been using, there are always some hidden benefits in improving performance. You can now select to use your computer graphics processor (GPU) in the develop mode for more speed. There’s another filter brush and a further refined clone tool/healing brush, but other novelties like face recognition, and curing pet red eye and likely to be less useful at the print shop. It was designed primarily for photographers which is why the interface is more like a digital darkroom with camera-like controls rather than more familiar Adobe layouts. And it’s because it’s intended for users editing multiple image files that it proves so handy for dealing with customers who bring in media with loads of files. It only handles RGB pixel based files, so won’t see PDFs or any other vector based images in CMYK, although there is now CMYK support for soft proofing to print. Most importantly, it works without loss to the original file, so you can edit and prepare for print without altering the customer’s copies. Rather than opening files individually, as you would in Photoshop, you can import a batch or select only a portion of a folder. The images are then held in a library module where they can be further selected by colour coding for example, and arranged for attention or editing. You can go straight to print from there or if you can see they are going to need a bit of processing for the particular printer, move into Develop mode where you have much more control over all aspects of colour and density. Digital images, particularly if they are unedited from digital cameras, contain lots of information which modern software is able to interrogate, and alter. Lightroom has a whole batch of tools which can make subtle or substantial changes to all parts of an image from basic exposure and colour balance, throughout highlights and shadows, to absolute fine colour channel tuning. If a series of images all require the same adjustment, they can simply be selected and the settings synchronised either entirely or partially, and this is a really convenient way of batch processing without time consuming editing. A before and after display can show you the effects changes have made, and you can revert back through history if you have gone too far, or even create a virtual copy if you want to save a version somewhere in between. The alternative of wading through lots of images individually in Photoshop isn’t really an option if time and money is a concern, as it usually is. It’s also a facility which your average customer is unlikely to have or be able to use especially as they now collect so many images on phones and camera cards. From the develop mode the processed images are exported to the same or an alternative folder or drive where they can be renamed, and resized if necessary. That way the originals are kept intact and not accidently

vivid-online.com

overwritten. This is also useful if you want to quickly save several alternative versions of the same file, for example for print and for web use. Lightroom will retain all the library information even if you move the original files, so you can reapply them another time if you can locate the files. Only deleting the catalogue folders will remove this data. Lightroom has a couple of other modules, one that can save a layout for a photobook, and one that will sort a web page or pages, both of which functions are fully editable. The most useful for digital on demand will be the print dialogue one. Again, this is not quite so straight forward as some programmes, but bear with it, once you get the hang of it’s little idiosyncrasies, it’s a handy little tool certainly compared to handling multiple layout with files of different sizes. Unlike Photoshop, Lightroom print files are not pixel dependent, so you can lay up files of different size without them being affected by resolution. If you create a file in Photoshop and import images of different resolution, you will find the dimensions will be affected as the resolution of the base canvas will take preference. Lightroom comes with some basic templates, but you can create your own custom ones, and save print files, as well as printer information. The Develop module shows thumbnails of the individual files so they can be picked and laid up to suit, including margins and orientation. Sorting out the columns and margins is a bit of a juggling act which I still struggle with even after several years, but the trick is to get your page size sorted in the first dialogue box and work to that. A display that includes bleed, margins, and individual cell dimensions is really handy. If there are edits that can’t be done in Lightroom, like adding text or layers then you can move directly into Photoshop and back again. All in all Lightroom is one of the best value offers for image manipulation. I always point out that other photo imaging packages are available, but being part of the Adobe stable puts it in the premier division.

Arjowiggins supporting education in Madagascar ARJOWIGGINS Graphic has launched its 2015 Cyclus campaign. Launching globally in 34 countries, including France, Australia, South Africa and the UK, corporate end users, print managers, designers and printers will be able to request a free Cyclus 100% Recycled notebook to help fund the education of children in a less privileged part of the world. With a dedicated website — www.cycluspaper.com, web banners, eblasts and an innovative origami lemur mailer and video, customers are invited to reflect on their own days at pre-school and their first days of learning in an engaging and interactive way. Angela De Vorchik, Marketing Manager at Arjowiggins Graphic UK said: “For this year’s campaign we have taken inspiration from Nobel Peace Prize Winner Malala Yousafzai who said ‘we should learn everything and then choose which path to follow’. We wanted to provide these children with the opportunity to gain an education from the earliest age and forge their path in life as a result. Once we reach our target of 5,000 notepad requests, we will be able to set the 720 children in the four SOS Children’s Villages pre-schools of Madagascar on their journeys of learning. Following the success of last year’s campaign, we are delighted to continue this successful relationship with SOS Children’s Villages France as we launch our latest Cyclus campaign”. Using Arjowiggins Graphic’s leading paper solutions and showcasing their innovative potential, the origami lemur mailer has been manufactured using a combination of CyclusPrint 250gsm and CyclusOffset 140gsm whilst the notepad uses CyclusPrint 350gsm for the cover pages and CyclusOffset 90gsm for the internal text pages. CyclusPrint is a 100% recycled matt-coated natural white printing paper for use in both full colour and black and white printing and ideal for a variety of uses whilst Cyclus Offset is a 100% recycled uncoated natural white paper that accentuates the creative message, where touch and feel combine with and support – the visual image. Charline Bergeron, Head of Partnership at SOS Children’s Villages France said, “Following the success of last year’s Cyclus campaign, which contributed to the education of 500 children in Madagascar, we are pleased to continue our relationship with Arjowiggins Graphic. Education is vital to our work and the contribution Arjowiggins Graphic will make to the lives of these children is truly great.” The campaign is being rolled out in the UK by Antalis a distributor of Cyclus. Belinda Kelly, Marketing Manager Antalis UK comments: “The Cyclus paper range enables us to deliver the shade and finish businesses need for their printed communications, such as high end marketing brochures and mailers, whilst also conveying the green credentials. When compared to the manufacture of non-recycled papers the manufacturing process reduces energy consumption, uses less water, diverts waste from landfill and the CO2 emissions are substantially lower. It is a paper with an environmental story that contributes to a business’s message – superb quality, a beautiful texture and a unique subtle shade . The Ultimate Recycled!” Arjowiggins Graphic’s customers are also able to use the company’s online EcoCalculator to create a personal Environmental Benefit Statement (EBS). The EBS reveals the savings on landfill, greenhouse gases, water and energy used by choosing Cyclus 100% recycled papers for a specific project and is an excellent way to engage users with the benefits of choosing recycled papers. www.cycluspaper.com

THE special “Selezione Italiana” gift box by Academia Barilla (the Barilla brand that promotes Italian cuisine around the world), made using Favini’s CartaCrusca and designed with the help of DraegerGPP, one of the largest manufacturers of luxury paper products, has won the LUXE PACK IN GREEN SHANGHAI AWARD for 2015 at this year’s Luxe Pack exhibition. The LUXE PACK IN GREEN award is given each year to the company that presents the most innovative solution in environmental packaging. An expert panel of judges selects the winner based on the materials used, the processes developed, the efficiency of the technology, and other parameters of sustainability. At this year’s prestigious event, and for the second time in the last three years, Favini has earned major recognition with the CartaCrusca packaging created for Academia Barilla by DraegerGPP. Academia Barilla came up with “Selezione Italiana” in order to promote Italian culinary tradition through a selection of products that epitomise Italian excellence, including extra-virgin olive oil, pesto made using an ancient Liguria recipe and a pack of bronze-extruded Barilla pasta. The gift box is made of CartaCrusca, the paper that is made from bran that is no longer suitable for human consumption. CartaCrusca was borne out of a collaboration between Barilla and Favini working side by side to select the by-product that was compatible with the paper fibre and then to purify and mill it. The result is a natural-looking paper, the main ingredient of which is plainly visible. In this way, Favini has taken a sort of packaging from nature, i.e. the bran that protects the grain, to make a one-of-a-kind paper to protect that same product in another form, pasta, thereby bringing bran and grain together again in an ideal union. Luca Virginio, Communications Director for the Barilla Group, said: “The new ‘Selezione Italiana’ packaging is a blend of culture, culinary excellence and respect for the environment. Barilla has always focused on ways to achieve sustainability in everything we do, from the field to the table. The low environmental impact of this gourmet gift packaging, the result of a partnership with Favini’s research and development team, is another example of the group’s efforts to do business that is ‘Good for You, Good for the Planet’. From the beginning, Barilla has combined the achievement of financial goals with our social commitment in all areas in which we operate. We are happy to have received such a prestigious award”. Andrea Nappa, Managing Director at Favini, said: “On the back of our experience with Shiro Alga Carta and Crush, we were able to develop a new paper specifically for Barilla and directly from nature. For years, Favini’s ecological papers have achieved unparalleled levels of success around the world, and it is this know-how that has made us the ideal partner to Barilla in this project”. www.luxepack.com • www.favini.com

Print on garments TIME to meet Nick Kirby at MOOCH who will help us discover DST printing. This new print process is a mix between screen and digital print technologies, not that we need worry too much about that as he will make us ‘badges’ to heat press on for those longer and higher quality personalised garments jobs. There are different products depending on the application. Low melt is for polyester and normal for cotton etc. Just the pressing time scenario we are mostly used to with our home made toner transfers. For longer runs and more durable jobs this is a definite upgrade, washability is much improved too. When advising on a promotion with variable images to be used not much more than once a week for a few months then instant toner transfers are still very much the game. However when work wear is going to be worn hard, washed hot and is on more expensive textiles then trade up to DST. Our research is starting with our own A3 sheet of emblems, so we can show our end user customers the quality by making up a few samples. When we know more we will share our learning curve experiences here and on the web and email. You can register your interest and have personal feedback of our journey and join in too. COPY THIS There was a doctor who was the most respected man in town. Wanting to spend more time with his family, he decided to clone himself to cut down on his workload. He was very successful. No one could tell that they were being examined by a clone and not the real doctor. After a while, the clone became vulgar and would tell his patients dirty jokes. The doctor realised this and decided that he needed to kill the clone to save his reputation. He took the clone to a cliff outside of town and pushed him off. The next day, however, the police found out and arrested the doctor for making an obscene clone fall.

IS THERE A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE? Two cowboys from Texas walk into a roadhouse to wash the trail dust from their throats. They stand at the bar, drinking a beer and talking about current cattle prices. Suddenly, a woman at a nearby table, who is eating a sandwich, begins to cough. After a minute or so, it becomes apparent that she is in real distress. One of the cowboys looks at her and say, ‘kin ya swaller?’ The woman shakes her head, no. Kin ya breathe?’ The woman begins to turn blue and shakes her head. The cowboy walks over to the woman, lifts up the back of her dress, yanks down her panties, and slowly runs his tongue from the back of her thigh up to the small of her back. The woman is so shocked, that she has a violent spasm and the obstruction flies out of her mouth. As she begins to breathe again, the cowboy walks slowly back to the bar and takes a drink from his beer. His partner says, Ya know, I’d heard of that there Hind Lick manoeuvre, but ain’t never seen nobody do it.’

SPOOKY A man visits his psychiatrist and talks about being haunted by visions of his departed relatives. He says; these ghosts are perched on the tops of fence posts around my garden every night. They sit there and watch me and watch me. What can I do? The psychiatrist says; that’s easy… just sharpen the tops of the posts.

BEST 11 NAMED 1. I read recipes the same way I read science fiction. I get to the end and I think, “Well, that’s not going to happen.” 2. Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in hospital dying of nothing. 3. The other night I ate at a real family restaurant. Every table had an argument going. 4. Have you noticed since everyone has a camcorder these days no one talks about seeing UFOs like they use to. 5. According to a recent survey, men say the first thing they notice about a woman is their eyes, and woman say the first thing they notice about men is they’re a bunch of liars. 6. Whenever I feel blue, I start breathing again. 7. All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism. 8. Have you noticed that a slight tax increase costs you £200 and a substantial tax cut saves you 35 pence? Ha, you will do. 9. In the 60s people took acid to make the world weird. Now the world is weird and people take Prozac to make it normal. 10. Politics is supposed to be the second oldest profession. I have come to realise that it bears a very close resemblance to the first. 11. How is it one careless match can start a forest fire, but it takes a whole box to start a campfire? Sorry make that 12: “Conjunctivitis. com – that’s a site for sore eyes”

SOME CHANCE A little girl asked her mother, “Can I go outside and play with the boys?” Her mother replied, “No, you can’t play with the boys, they’re too rough.” The little girl thought about it for a few moments and asked, “If I can find a smooth one, can I play with him?”

A COUPLE OF SHORTS FOR THE ROAD A police recruit was asked during the exam, “What would you do if you had to arrest your own mother?” He said: “Call for backup.” A man walks into a pub, goes up to the bar ‘Pint of best’ he says to the barman, Whilst waiting for his drink he notices that Vincent Van Gogh is sitting at one of the tables He goes up to him and says ‘Are you Vincent Van Gogh?’ ‘Yes’ the old man replies ‘Do you want a pint?’ ‘No, ta. I’ve got one ‘ere.’

SAFE BET A woman in Atlantic City was losing at the roulette wheel. When she was down to her last 10 dollars, she asked the fellow next to her for a good number. “Why don’t you play your age?” he suggested. The woman agreed, and then put her money on the table. The next thing the guy with the advice knew, the woman had fainted and fallen to the floor. He rushed right over. “Did she win?” he asked. “No” replied the attendant. “She put 10 dollars on 33 and 46 came in.”

SHORT AND SWEET AND A TOUCH GHOULISH Q: What do you get when you cross Bambi with a ghost? A: Bamboo. Q: What’s a haunted chicken? A: Poultry-geist. Q: Why are most monsters covered in wrinkles? A: Have you ever tried to iron a monster? Q: What kind of mistakes do ghosts make? A: Boo boos. Q: Why couldn’t Dracula’s wife get to sleep? A: Because of his coffin. Q: Why do mummies make excellent spies? A: They’re good at keeping things under wraps.

WOULD YOU REMARRY? An elderly couple were in bed one night and the woman woke up from a bad dream. She was scared and panicking. Her husband awoke and turned the light on to calm her. He asked what was wrong. She said “I had a dream that I died and you got remarried.” She asked him, “If I died tomorrow, would you get remarried?” He said “Sure, I don’t want to spend the rest of my life lonely.” Then she asked, “Well would you two live in this house?” He replied “Sure, we just finished paying off our mortgage.” She asked again, angry now, “Well would she sleep in this bed?” He snickered and said “Yes, of course, this bed is brand new and expensive, there’s no reason to rid of it.” She asked irately, “Well would she use my golf clubs?!” He replied with a straight, serious face, “No. She’s left handed.”

TAKE YOUR MEDICINE A 75 year old woman went to the doctor for a check-up. The doctor told her she needed more activity and recommended sex three times a week. She said to the doctor, ‘Please, tell my husband.’ The doctor walked into the waiting room and told her husband that his wife needed to have sex three times a week. The 80 year old husband replied, ‘Which days?’ The doctor answered, ‘How about Monday, Wednesday and Friday.’ The husband said, ‘I can bring her Monday and Wednesday, but on Fridays, she’ll have to take the bus.’

TUNE IT IN A tourist in Vienna goes through a graveyard and all of a sudden he hears some music. No one is around, so he starts searching for the source. He finally locates the origin and finds it is coming from a grave with a headstone that reads: “Ludwig van Beethoven, 1770-1827.” Then he realises that the music is the Ninth Symphony, and it is being played backwards! Puzzled, he leaves the graveyard and persuades a friend to return with him. By the time they arrive back at the grave, the music has changed. This time it is the Seventh Symphony, but like the previous piece, it is being played backwards. Curious, the men agree to consult a music scholar. When they return with the expert, the Fifth Symphony is playing, again backwards. The expert notices that the symphonies are being played in the reverse order in which they were composed, the 9th, then the 7th, then the 5th. By the next day the word has spread and a throng has gathered around the grave. They are all listening to the Second Symphony being played backwards. Just then the graveyard’s caretaker ambles up to the group. Someone in the group asks him if he has an explanation for the music. “Don’t you get it?” the caretaker says incredulously. “He’s decomposing.”

BANKERS TALE A frog walks into a bank, and approaches the banker. He sees the tellers name tag read Paddy Black and says “I’d like to take out a loan, Mrs. Black” “Certainly,” says the banker, “how much would that be for?” “One million dollars.” replies the frog. “Don’t worry, it’s ok, I know the manager.” The banker is understandably taken aback by this, and asks if the frog has

YELLOW 24 A man goes to the doctor’s and asks why he’s been feeling ill. The doctor examines him and replies “I’m sorry to tell you, you’ve got the disease known as Yellow 24.” “What’s that?” the man asks. “It means your internal organs have started turning yellow you’ve got 24 hours to live”. The man goes home and tells his wife the bad news. His wife says “Well, will you come to bingo with me tonight then? Otherwise you’ll never be able to.” The man agrees so he and his wife go to the bingo. He finds that he’s won the one-line and £10. He begins to think this isn’t such a bad day after all. Twenty minutes later, he’s won the full house and £150. He enters the lucky draw, worth £500, and wins that too. The bingo caller calls him up on stage. He says “I don’t believe it, mate. You’ve won three competitions in a total of £660 in one night. You must be the luckiest man on the earth!” The man says “Well, no, I’m not. I’ve got Yellow 24.” The bingo caller looks down at the piece of paper he’s holding and starts clapping. “I don’t believe it; he’s won the raffle as well!”

FOURTH TIME LUCKY Once upon a time, these two women were talking and the one asks the other how many times she’s been married, and the reply was four. ‘Four times!’ exclaimed the first woman, why so many? So the other woman said: ‘Well, I first got married

“I am not going, he is not going; we are not going; they are not going.”

when I was very young, and I married this wonderful man who was a banker. However, one day just a few weeks after we were married, his bank was robbed and he was shot and killed.’ ‘Oh my gosh, that’s terrible’ the first woman said. ‘Well, it wasn’t that tragic. Soon after that, I started seeing another man who performed in the circus. He was really a great guy, but he lived pretty dangerously because he performed his high-wire act without a net. Well, a few weeks after we got married, he was performing a show and suddenly a gust of wind came by and knocked him off his wire and he was killed.’ ‘Your second husband was killed too? That’s horrible!’ ‘Yes, it was terrible, but at the funeral I fell in love with the minister and we got married soon after that. Unfortunately, one Sunday while he was walking to church, he was hit by a car and killed.’ ‘Three? Three husbands of yours were killed? How could you live through all that? ‘ ’It was pretty tough, but then I met my present husband. And he’s a wonderful man. I think we’ll live a long happy life together.’ ‘’And what does your present husband do for a living? ‘ ’He’s a mortician. ‘ ’A mortician? I don’t understand something here. First you marry a banker, then a circus performer, then a minister, and now a mortician? Why such a diverse grouping of husbands? ‘ ’Well, if you think about it it’s not too hard to understand... One for the money... Two for the show...Three to get ready... And four to go!’

YOUR ROUND A salesman entered a library and asked, “Can I have a pint of lager and a packet of crisps please?!” The librarian said “I’m sorry, but this is a library.” Then the salesman WHISPERED “Oh, sorry can I have a pint of lager and a packet of crisps?”

Salesman: Wow! Ain’t nobody goin’ then?
