Darren Coxon announced as BPIF President Darren Coxon, Managing Director of Pensord, joined the board of the BPIF as a Non-Executive Director in 2013, serving as Vice President since March 2015. He was elected President in December 2016 and will officially take up the role at BPIF Members’ Day on the 4th of July. Darren is the Managing Director and majority shareholder at Pensord, one of the UK’s leading magazine print companies. Joining the company in 2002 as commercial director he has overseen its turnaround from a £6m turnover loss making position to a profitable business consistently turning over more than £12m.

In 2010 he led a management buy-out of the business with operations director Karl Gater and the business has gone on to record some major milestones with record sales in 2011, BPIF Print Company of the Year in 2012 and PrintWeek Customer Service Team of the Year in 2016. Previously Darren had operated at senior management level for a number of years, predominantly in the sheet fed magazine sector, having developed through the ranks from a pre-press apprentice way back in 1990. Darren comments “I am delighted to accept the position of President. I believe the role of the BPIF is very important to our industry. Highly visible are the quality services it provides for member companies and not so apparent is the great work that goes unseen, like the lobbying efforts within government to ensure print and related industries remain at the heart of Government thinking. It is my intention to make a positive difference during my tenure and help to ensure the BPIF continues to provide great member services and stays entirely relevant to the transforming and great industry it serves.”) For more information on the BPIF, visit: www.britishprint.com

New UK Printing – The Facts and Figures At the BPIF, they think it is imperative that we have the latest updates on the importance and scale of UK printing. As you know print plays a vitally important role in the performance of UK plc, and has huge national economic significance. In a changing media environment, its scale, diversity and strength is unprecedented and they want this to remain at the forefront of Government and other industries’ minds. Using data from a wide range of official sources, the BPIF has updated and republished UK Printing — The Facts and Figures. It sets out detailed information on the structure of our industry by region and product, as well as covering its economic importance and its productivity. It also highlights the effectiveness and sustainability of

print as a modern communications medium. Did you know that the UK print sector: • Is the world’s fifth largest producer of printed products • Has a turnover of £13.8 billion • Has 116,000 employees • Consists of 8,400 companies • Has a gross added value of £5.8 billion • Made a P.A. capital investment of £700 million in 2016 • Had a positive trade balance of £775 million in 2016 The BPIF want UK Printing — The Facts and Figures, to be used to educate politicians, parliamentarians and public servants about the vitally important role print plays in today’s economy. This is why they will be sending it to all MPs and Lords so they can see the value that the printing industry has to the national economy. However they’d also like the whole industry to use it to promote print to their customers and suppliers. All members will be sent a copy of the new UK Printing — The Facts and Figures, or you can download a copy. Alternatively you can purchase a supply of printed copies or to receive a high-res file to enable you to print some yourself. For more information on the BPIF, visit: www.britishprint.com

Unleashing new business opportunities The Centre, Canon’s newly opened production print showroom in Birmingham, will combine Canon’s insight and expertise along with that of independent industry mentors and be a showcase of real-world applications demonstrating the latest Canon technologies. It is set to live up to its name, as one of the key facilities in the provision of the company’s highly successful Essential Business Builder Program (EBBP) for customers. The Essential Business Builder Program is a perfect illustration of Canon’s commitment towards delivering a strategic partnership approach to the market. It seeks to inspire customers to innovate and transform their business models with creative and even disruptive ideas. The programme is delivered by Canon’s team of independent experts, and consultants provide support through three key channels: • Business development guides, covering a variety of digital print-related topics, including tips for negotiating, marketing and social media • Educational workshops such as sales training, planning for change, supply chain strategy, and cross media • Direct working with a business on an individual basis to provide one-onone mentoring and consultancy The EBBP – the Essential Business Builder Program – represents a wealth of valuable information and practical advice that will help digital printers to keep abreast of the latest thinking and trends in both digital printing and in business in general. It is all about making Canon’s customers’ businesses successful, profitable and productive.

Of course, the proof of its success is in the impact it has had on companies that have already used EBBP. One such business is PCS (Public & Commercial Services Union), whose Asad Butt said: “Thanks to Canon’s hands-on, tailored consultancy and mentoring, PCS implemented a number of innovative solutions that made a demonstrable difference to our business. I often come back from the workshops and immediately put the key takeaways into practice. That’s why Canon stands out as a technology supplier.” And Mark Roberts of Hertsmere reported: “The Canon team was just as focused on our business plan as we were, and that’s reflected in its Essential Business Builder Program. It’s great to see a supplier develop an initiative that’s solely concentrated on the customer.” www.canon.co.uk/businessbuilder

35-years and counting… West London-based Express Print this year celebrates 35 years of business. However, rather than simply accepting the plaudits and reminiscing over past glories, the husband and wife team behind this independent print company are putting plans in place to ensure many more years of success lie ahead. “We’re delighted to be celebrating, but in so many ways it feels like we’ve only just got started,” says Nigel Presky, who runs the business with his wife Shereen. Express Print has always been a family business. Just as the computer age was beginning to change the face of the print business, Nigel’s father Harold was made redundant from his job in the fashion industry, prompting the pair to go into business together. “We felt it was the ideal time to use the knowledge I had picked up working for other printers and open for business at a time when print was blossoming,” Nigel explains. “We were confident Ealing was the right location — we had and still do have one of the largest industrial estates in the country on our doorstep. “I remember the day we opened — my mother was running up and down the street with balloons to drum up some business. And it worked! Orders started rolling in, which all had to be handwritten in triplicate, and we started

printing on a couple of single-colour A3 devices. We never looked back!” Shereen, who had previously allowed Nigel and Harold to take the business forward while she worked as a PA, joined the business some five years later when she left her job. “At that stage I didn’t know what I was going to do, so came in to help out,” Shereen explains. “I didn’t want to step on toes, but we found a way to make it work — probably because our work doesn’t really overlap — and I’m still here 30 years later!” With Nigel looking after the technical and production side and Shereen focusing on customer care and the all-important behind the scenes jobs that help the business to run smoothly, Express Print has thrived. But what do the pair think are the main reasons for their success? “We’ve never stopped evolving and we’ve constantly invested in new technology to keep up with the changing print game,” says Nigel. “Our approach is to watch tech development closely and invest when we feel it’s ready — in the second wave if you like. That way the others can do the hard work and iron out any gremlins! “We’ve also radically changed the business over the years, in line with the changing marketplace. Five years ago, we changed our staffing requirement to give us more flexibility, moving from having in-house staff to utilising

freelancers for design. So much of our output had been automated and clients were increasingly supplying artwork, so it made sense to retain the expertise, but for only when it’s needed.” Shereen adds: “Reliability is also vital to our success and 99% of the time people get what they want, when they want it. Consistency of service matters and if that means working long hours, we do it. We also have superb attention to detail and will advise customers if, for example, artwork isn’t right.” “Customers come first — and if that means having frank and honest discussions with them so be it — although we do feel like diplomats at times! It’s about being experts and working together to produce the best product at a competitive price — and that’s why we’ve retained some customers for 35 years.” Looking to the future, Express Print has recently partnered with Nettl, which enables the business to offer extensive web design services to clients. “To survive you have to keep modernising and we believe this partnership will help us to build business, both on the digital side and in print,” explains Shereen. “Print is far from dead — it’s just harder to make money from it — so if we can sell to clients on the web development side, other business will follow.” Shereen concludes by saying: “By maintaining our service-led approach whilst evolving our offering, we’ve got many more years left in us!” www.expressprint.co.uk

Time to make your mark? Antalis Review 2017 Antalis has launched The Review 2017 and is calling on the UK design and print community to enter the awards now and ‘Make Your Mark’. Now in its 26th year, the Antalis Review Awards are designed to celebrate and reward those who have created exceptional work in the printed medium. Each year, the revered awards attract some of most talented designers and printers in the industry, competing to win one of a number of categories including Best Direct Mail, Best Recycled and, newly introduced last year, Best in Digital and Best in Litho Print. Tying all categories together is the creative process of selecting the right paper to bring the printed piece to life. Entrants are invited to submit design pieces that have been printed on Antalis’ vast choice of paper stock between September 2016 and 4th July 2017, which is also the official closing date for entries. Themed around the concept of ‘Make you Mark’, this year’s exclusive award event will take place on 21st September 2017 at the Flight Club, London; home to the UK’s social darts phenomenon. Promising to be bigger and better than ever before, guests can look to dabble in some darts before enjoying a night of networking and entertainment centred around celebrating the best in industry. Ian Webb, marketing director at Antalis, comments: “The print design world has shifted dramatically in recent years. Amid the rise of digital print and constant innovation in paper, today’s discerning customer increasingly seeks more creativity than ever before. It is therefore fantastic to recognise and reward

those printers and designers who continued to meet this demand, working in partnership to create truly innovative concepts which push the boundaries in print design. We’d encourage as many designers and print customers as possible to enter this year and get ready to truly ‘’Make Your Mark’” The Review 2017 is now open for entries and the official closing date is 4th July 2017. Every

piece of work entered will be judged by a panel of leading independent industry experts, with consideration paid to not only the design, but the use of the material, innovation and talent. All finalists will be invited to the awards event, appear in The Review book and online and receive a coveted Review award. The categories for the Antalis Review Awards 2017 are: • Reports — Annual/Interim • Brochures — Corporate • Brochures — Products & Services • Direct Mail • Stationery — including Greetings Cards • Magazines • Catalogues • Books • Recycled • Creative Papers • Retail — Luxury Packaging and POS • Best in Digital Print • Best in Litho Print There are also two prestigious overall awards presented, one for Print and one for Design, which will be announced during the awards ceremony on the 21st September 2017. Wood Richardson’s handy pack York-based printer Wood Richardson has created a free Print Buyers’ Pack to help all of their existing and new customers to understand the magic they can create when working with a high quality printer. After conducting a recent customer survey, the Wood Richardson team discovered that some of their customers were confused by the many different print options on offer. The team wanted to find a way of providing useful information to their customers in an engaging format and the Print Buyers’ Pack was developed. The pack contains many useful guides and examples aimed at helping people buying print to make better and more informed decisions. Included in the pack are swatches of different paper stocks and finishes, examples of how colour prints differently on various materials, pros and cons of the digital and lithographic processes and guides on sizes of paper and corresponding envelopes. It also contains handy printers’ terms and references and information on how to supply the perfect artwork. Sales Director Alan Coulson said: “We know that sometimes printers’ terms and all of the different printing and finishing options available can be overwhelming. We want to really help our customers make informed print decisions. We have designed a Print Buyers’ Pack which we hope people will find useful and help them to achieve the best possible results from their

printing.” Wood Richardson offer a wide range of choices and options from high gloss paper stocks through to FSC certified and recycled paper options for those customers concerned about being as environmentally friendly as possible. Based in purpose built facilities in York, Wood Richardson was established in 1905 and has been run by the Richardson family since the

1920s. Working with a wide range of local and national businesses, the York based printer is renowned for the high quality and great customer service it provides to its customers, many of whom have a long term working relationship with the business. The Print Buyers’ Pack is available now. To order your free copy visit: www.woodrichardson.co.uk/print-buyers-pack www.woodrichardson.co.uk

Terry Ulrick: Journalist, Editor and Founding Father of Print Futures Terry Ulrick died suddenly, on Thursday 4 May, while visiting friends in Yorkshire. While he grew up in Chislehurst, Kent, Terry was really a Londoner. He trained as a journalist which despite the many jobs and job titles (Commercial and Marketing Director) that is what he remained until his dying day. Terry started with the Kentish Times in 1953. When he left in 1957 his reference stated: ‘I have had many young journalists under me during my 30 years or so in the profession but none has impressed me more than Mr Ulrick…’. Terry moved through the industry working variously for firms such as Ebenezer Bayliss of Worcester, Waterlows, IPC Business Press until he joined BPCC, part of the Maxwell empire. The result was that Terry held the dubious privilege of being sacked by Robert Maxwell, three times. His final spell as employee was as the editor of Printing World. After that he worked as a PR consultant to Sun Chemicals, KBA and The Printing Charity until final retirement. Terry then threw himself into charity work most notably with

the Samaritans. He started as a ‘listening’, manning the phone, until he became involved in fundraising and marketing. In a long life what was his defining contribution? It was the creation of Print Futures. Print Futures was Terry’s idea sealed over a glass and a meal with BPiF. He nursed it, resuscitated it, until it became a fixture in the industry’s calendar and the success we celebrate today. Since it started in 2003 Print Futures has helped 157 young people train for our industry. It epitomised his love of people and belief in the young, with practical action. Terry was much more, a Bon Vivant, a lover of good food, wine and cooking. A wonderful host with a sackful of stories told with wit and flair. To many he was a good and loyal friend. At The Printing Charity he earned the nickname of ‘Father Christmas’ not just because of his beard and curly white hair but because behind a sometimes grumpy exterior he was a warm-hearted, generous human being. He will be missed by his family and many friends.

The family have requested that donations are made to The Samaritans Horsham Branch or The Journalist’s Charity via the funeral directors, Masters and Son, Haywards Heath, http://mastersandson. com. The funeral took place on 26 May 2017 at Worth Crematorium, Crawley, West Sussex.

HP ‘Pink Ream’ supports breast cancer International Paper has announced that it is collaborating with the Komen European Network (partner of Susan G Komen organisation), to launch a specially created HP Office ‘Pink Ream’ in support of programmes to help save lives from breast cancer in Europe. The HP Office ‘Pink Ream’ product will be available exclusively through Office Depot from June, and it will then be made available through all other distribution channels from mid-September and October, as October is the international month of breast cancer awareness. This will be through the retail outlets of Office Outlet, Spicers, Staples and Rymans. A contribution of £0.10 from the sale of each HP Office ‘Pink Ream’ in Europe will be made to the Komen European Network during 2017, with a minimum guarantee of €100,000 being donated to the charity. Susan G Komen is the world’s largest breast cancer organisation, (whose vision is a world without breast cancer), and its European Network was founded by European nonprofit groups who collaborate with the group to arrange The Race for the Cure® events in Europe. The Race for the Cure® is the largest event worldwide in the fight against breast cancer, where participants either run 5km or walk 3km. According to the Susan G. Komen Europe Network, their mission is to work collaboratively to reduce mortality from breast cancer and support women facing the disease. The Network focuses on: Breast health awareness and targeted education, Projects that identify and reduce barriers to care and services, and mission programs supporting women with breast cancer. As part of a European agreement, all the funds donated by International

Paper in Europe will stay in the region, and will be used to support and aid European programmes that are focused on breast cancer research, awareness, and prevention. International Paper in the United States donates $50,000 annually to the breast cancer research and awareness campaign through the Susan G Komen organisation. The collaboration between International Paper and HP Papers has been in existence in the USA since 2007, during which time more than $700,000 has been donated towards the campaign. International Paper has now decided to extend that collaboration into Europe, and the HP Office ‘Pink Ream’ initiative aims to become a global breast cancer support programme of the HP Papers brand, which is manufactured exclusively by International Paper, based on the positive experience in the US. International Paper has chosen to provide support for the breast cancer research awareness campaign, as the company believes all efforts to reduce the mortality rate from breast cancer, both local and globally, are equally important. International Paper therefore opted to support directly one organisation with the widest global reach coverage - Susan G Komen. According to the Susan G. Komen Europe Network, breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer death for women over the age of 35 in Europe, with nearly 500,000 women a year being diagnosed with breast cancer. Every year over 140,000 women pass away which makes it the biggest mortality for European women over 35. www.internationalpaper.com

Canon launches new Océ VarioPrint i200 Canon Europe is extending its Océ VarioPrint i-Series portfolio with the launch of the Océ VarioPrint i200, a 200 page-per-minute (ppm) sheetfed inkjet press which brings the benefits of the previously launched Océ VarioPrint i300 to customers with lower volume requirements. Along with the release of the Océ VarioPrint i200 model, Canon is introducing the option of MICR inks to users of the VarioPrint i-Series, while the launch of the next generation Océ PRISMAsync controller for both the VarioPrint i200 and i300 models offers a full native PDF workflow and enhances application versatility and production efficiencies. Both i-Series models now also feature new paper feeding options to enable PSPs to run tabs and pre-punched stocks. This added media flexibility is also available to existing VarioPrint i300 users as an upgrade. The Océ VarioPrint i200 cut sheet inkjet press features the same patented ink, print head and paper handling technology as the VarioPrint i300, enabling PSPs to print at high speeds on a diverse range of media, including coated, uncoated and inkjet treated paper. The new press is designed to bridge the volume gap between the Canon imagePRESS C10000VP toner press at 100 ppm and the Océ VarioPrint i300 at 300 ppm. Customers choosing the VarioPrint i200 have the option to upgrade to the VarioPrint i300 if growing print volumes warrant it. The introduction of Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) to both models of the VarioPrint i-Series opens doors for print service providers (PSPs) producing financial security applications. Documents printed with this magnetic ink require special readers to decode the magnetic signals, making it invaluable in financial documents to prevent and detect fraud. The next generation PRISMAsync version 5 workflow offers

productivity enhancements as well as improving the interoperability with other PRISMAsync systems such as the imagePRESS and VarioPrint 6000 families, making it easier for customers operating multiple Canon devices to build seamlessly interconnected workflows. Existing VarioPrint i300 customers may also choose to upgrade to the new version of PRISMAsync. As evidenced by feedback from customers across Europe, the Océ VarioPrint i300 has been game-changing in its uptime, print quality and economics, while redefining expectations of the potential of inkjet technology in commercial print environments. The VarioPrint i-Series is powered by Océ iQuarius technologies, a portfolio of innovations that facilitate high-speed inkjet printing on sheet stock. These include precision sheet control, air-assisted paper transport, precise sheet positioning and features that allow controlled drying for flat output and real-time detection and correction of nozzle failures during printing. www.canon-europe.com

Mimaki unveil new model at FESPA 2017 Mimaki unveiled a new member of the UJFMkII product family, its latest generation of small format UV flatbed printers at Fespa 2017 The UJF-3042MkII EX offers a unique approach to value-added printing by combining four steps into one: delivering the ability to place primer for strong ink adhesion, white ink for high print opacity, full colour CMYK printing and a clear print surface treatment, all in one operation. This high versatility approach has been enabled through the addition of a fourth print head and the ability to hold eight ink bottles. The UJF-MkII UV curable flatbed printing systems were launched last summer and have been very well received by the market since their introduction. Mimaki has identified the opportunity to raise the bar even further with the new model, enabling in a single operation; the laying down, where required, of a base coat of inkjet primer, a base print of white ink, full colour print and a surface coating of clear ink, adding up to an efficient means of producing value-added printing applications. Mimaki also offers a texture library within the Mimaki RasterLink6 RIP that can deliver further value in the finished print. In addition to all of the advantages of the Mimaki UJF-3042MkII, the new UJF-3042MkII

EX adds more features to the standard model for higher performance and ease of use, including a status indication lamp to quickly check the status of the printer, a vacuum table to fix the print substrate and an emergency switch to immediately stop the machine operation. It also offers worry-free operation with automatic detection and cleaning of clogged nozzles, substituting them with good nozzles for printing during the process. The compressed workflow includes a jettable primer to improve ink adhesion whilst retaining the texture of the material after printing, which is difficult to do with manual primer application. The Mimaki PR-200 primer can be used on

resin, glass and metal materials. Mimaki’s white UV ink features high opacity and enables a more vivid expression of full colour, especially on dark or transparent substrates. Two bottles of white ink can be attached to the printer to achieve high density white print in a shorter time with greater opacity. Mimaki’s clear ink, with either glossy or matte effects, can add texture and depth to prints. It can be laid down in multiple layers for an embossed effect and can be used with Mimaki’s texture library as part of the Mimaki RasterLink6 RIP software which offers 129 different textures that can be displayed as swatches in Adobe® Illustrator. Application of these textures with clear ink can deliver more elaborate designs, such as a floral motifs or other patterns that add even greater value to the printed piece. Mimaki has GREENGUARD and GREENGUARD Gold certifications for the UV-curable inks used in its UJF-3042MkII, UJF-6042MkII and UJF-3042MkII EX printers, including LH-100, LUS-120, LUS-150 UV curable inks. The certification also applies to Mimaki’s LUS-200 UV-curable ink; LX-101 Latex ink; and SS21, Mimaki’s most popular solvent ink. www.hybridservices.co.uk

IPEX Design challenge Informa Exhibitions has announced the six finalists and runners-up for its ‘Visitor Advertising Design Challenge’ competition. Since the launch of the competition in February 2017, IPEX has received over 50 entries from individuals as far away as the USA, Australia, the Middle East, as well as the UK. The competition was aimed at apprentices, students and designers working in the wider community and aged under 25. They were invited to develop and submit a design of a visitor promotion advertisement to be used in print and online in the run up to and during the event. The entries were judged by a panel comprising a publisher from Informa, the IPEX marketing team, designers from Brandnew Future and MGA, and was chaired by IPEX Event Director, Rob Fisher. “This competition has been a great opportunity for young designers to experience what it’s like to submit work for a commercial brief and will

help them to create a stronger portfolio to impress future employers”, commented Rob Fisher, IPEX Event Director. “We want to engage with young people and help promote all aspects of the print industry as an exciting career choice.” For the next stage of the competition the top three finalist’s designs are hosted on the IPEX website www.ipex.org/design-challenge-finalists where visitors will be encouraged to vote for their favourite design. The design includes a description from the designer explaining the inspiration behind their entry. The design that accumulates the most votes will be the overall winner. The three runner-up designs can also be viewed at www.ipex.org/ design-challenge-runners-up. HP to add flavour at The Print Show

Encore at The Print Show

HP has become the latest major brand to commit to The Print Show this year, signing up for a 140m2 stand at the event and set to bring a large cross section of its printing press technology. The show takes place from October 11th to 13th 2017. This follows news that major finishing technology player Industria Meccanica Lombarda (IML) has partnered with Perfect Bindery Solutions to quadruple the size of the latter presence and take one of the very biggest stands at the exhibition. Another key testament to The Print Show’s success, and another vindication of its move to The International Centre for 2017, is that highlyrespected UK print finishing technology supplier Encore Machinery has signed up to exhibit. Its managing director Paul Davidson says it was ‘only right’ after the exhibition helped significantly grow its sales and has praised the facilities and professionalism of the venue. HP and IML join the likes of Epson, KBA, Morgana, Kluge International, Premier Paper, B & R Moll, Intec, AXYZ International, Vivid Laminating Systems, and Grafityp as leading manufacturing names—to name but a few—that have thrown their backing behind the show. Still more are soon to be announced. Speaking about the news, event director Chris Davies praised HP’s decision to support The Print Show, explaining that the manufacturer can now look forward to welcoming visitors from all areas of the industry. www.theprintshow.com

Encore Machinery is happy to repeat their showing after a successful time at the 2016 event. Paul Davidson, sales manager at the firm, said the company is hoping for more of the same this year and has fully backed the show to succeed at the International Centre in Telford. Encore specialises in selling print finishing equipment such as folders, creasing machines, drills bits, hooks, and needles. “After a very successful show last year we felt it was only right we continued to support the show and after visiting the change of venue earlier in the year we believe visitors will be pleasantly surprised,” says Davidson. He continues: “We were pleasantly surprised at the centre’s facilities and easy access for being able to install machinery. Customers will be impressed by the venue and being able to park directly outside the exhibition centre without needing to catch a shuttle bus to the halls is a real plus point.” Davidson went on to say that while Encore is still in the process of finalising its plans for the show, which runs from October 11th to 13th, it will be displaying a number of new products. “We still haven’t finalised our exact show offering but customers can be assured we will be showing a number of new solutions for short run packaging, paper over board products, photobook production, laminating machines, high speed creasing and folding solutions,” Davidson comments. www.theprintshow.com

Perfect bindery solutions at The Print Show Long-time supporter Perfect Bindery Solutions has opted to more than quadruple its stand space at this year’s event, in what is a magnificent show of support for the event. The company has supported the exhibition since its inaugural edition in 2015 and, having experienced what it describes as a “run of outstanding results” at both the 2015 and 2016 show, has boosted its presence for year three. Steve Giddins, operations partner at Perfect Bindery Solutions, explains that the larger stand space will allow the company to better demonstrate its wide range of solutions, including a number of new systems from Italian manufacturer IML Machinery that will have their global launch at the show in October. “The new systems from IML are going to change the way the short-run book production market works,” Giddins says, adding: “The Print Show 2017 will be a watershed event—a real ‘I was there’ occasion.” The first new IML system is an automated single clamp, on-demand binding line that Giddins describes as “totally flexible”, adding, “feeding can be by hand or in-line, glue application can be wheel-and-pot or nozzle,

PUR or hot-melt, and, of course, it has milling, side-gluing and cover feeding for standard paperbacks, too”. The system will be shown in line with a new, automated IML 3-knife trimmer; a solution that Giddins says “helps square the circle”. He adds: “It is an automated on-demand case maker, which means high quality conventional hard back books can be finished efficiently and reliably in small numbers. Together, these systems are the ultimate solution for on-demand soft cover and hard back book production in-house.” Perfect Bindery Solutions had enjoyed previous success with product launches at the show, having used last year’s event to introduce IML’s Perfect Box Solutions range, and Giddins is hoping for a similar performance this year. Giddins comments: “The response to those systems has been astonishing and we’re still being run off our feet with the business generated there. Pound for pound it was the best trade show Perfect Bindery Solutions has ever attended. “Last year proved to us that The Print Show is a good environment to meet the right people—

people who mean business. The organisers have shown that they listen to the industry and will bend over backwards to make it work for us and I don’t see why this year should be any different.” www.theprintshow.co.uk Twitter feed, @theprintshow.

FESPA 2017

SUCCESS FOR MIMAKI Mimaki has reported that it had its biggest and most successful presence ever at FESPA 2017 with two stands totalling 534 square metres.

[I]

n addition to interest from visitors in Mimaki’s sign and display graphics, industrial print, 3D printing and digital textile printing solutions, visitors also took FESPA’s theme for the show to heart. The “Dare to print different” motto elicited numerous discussions about different and interesting applications that are not common in traditional business but for which Mimaki solutions are ideal, including printing on innovative and unusual substrates. Mimaki Europe also received two prestigious awards during the show. The “Best Object Printer” was awarded to the new Mimaki UJF-MkII Series and “Best Textile Printer under 100 sq m/h” was bestowed upon the Mimaki Tx300P-1800 with its dual ink capability. At the show, Mimaki Europe also introduced Yuji Ikeda as its new Managing Director. After spending seven years at Mimaki Europe, Ikeda returned to Japan to take on the role of Senior General Manager of Corporate Planning, where he served for several years before returning to lead Mimaki Europe. DEMONSTRATING NEW TECHNOLOGIES — “We were especially pleased with attendee interest in the technology demonstration of our 3D printer, the Mimaki 3DUJ-P,” says Ronald van den Broek, General Manager Sales at Mimaki Europe. “Based on Mimaki’s advanced UV inkjet technology, the 3DUJ-P offers high definition modelling with a maximum size of 500 x 500 x 300 mm. It is the world’s first truly full-colour modelling solution and supports up to 10 million different colours with the ability to achieve 84% of the FOGRA39L colour gamut with high definition printing.” The Mimaki 3DUJ-P, which also includes clear ink for stunning effects and a water-soluble support material that can be simply washed away, is expected to be commercially available later this year. National Sales Manager for Mimaki’s UK and Irish distributor, Hybrid Services, John de la Roche states, “We were thrilled with the response to the new 3D printer and it demonstrates Mimaki’s innovative approach to new markets. The samples that visitors witnessed were beautifully produced and offer something quite different in the market.” Van den Broek also reports that Mimaki’s new high-speed direct-to-textile Tiger-1800B printer took centre stage and was equally well received. It was the first time that Mimaki

had showcased the printer with sublimation ink after demonstrating it with reactive ink at previous shows and to cap its success; textile company Estampados Hermanos Perez, located in Mataró, Spain invested in a Tiger-1800B having committed to the new machine during the exhibition. In the Textile Hall, Mimaki also had on display the award-winning Tx300P-1800 and Tx300P-1800B direct-to-textile printers, updated to simultaneously load both textile pigment and sublimation dye inks. This enables the use of a single printer to print directly on a wide range of textiles without the need to change ink systems. This new technology is a breakthrough that improves productivity and increases flexibility and Mimaki showed digitally printed textile examples, ranging from apparel and accessories to home décor. Hybrid Services Director, Peter Mitchell, states, “There’s a real interest in the new dual ink technology in the UK and Ireland. Furnishings and fashion designers and manufacturers can sample or bring products to market quickly, cost effectively and on a range of fabrics with just the one printer.” DARE TO PRINT DIFFERENT — Mimaki also reports that many visitors to the stand were seeking solutions that would enable them to print on natural fibres with solutions like the Tx300P-1800 with textile pigment ink. In addition, visitors were interested in using sublimation printing for fast fashion and soft signage. Witnessing the change in how textile companies are operating by bringing production closer to their local market and enabling fast

fashion workflows to deliver goods quickly, at high quality and with greater flexibility than ever before, Mitchell remarks, “The increase in UK and Irish companies investing in Mimaki’s volume textile production solutions at the exhibition was extremely encouraging.” “The impressive textile-specific stand at FESPA demonstrated Mimaki’s significant commitment to the sector,” he continues. “With product launches such as the entrylevel TS30-1300 dye sublimation printer right through to Mimaki showing the new 3.2m TS500P-3200DS with its inbuilt fixation, we’ve demonstrated a clear indication of how the company has a textile printing solution at every price point.” SPOTLIGHT ON APPLICATIONS — In addition to learning about the Mimaki printers on display, visitors to the Mimaki stand discovered the wide range of applications that Mimaki printers can produce, with examples including printed notebooks, dresses, pillows, shoes … Mimaki aimed to inspire FESPA visitors by showcasing all these possibilities – daring them to “print different.” Van den Broek concludes, “We are very pleased about the results we achieved at FESPA 2017. It was our most successful edition to date, and the show continues to exceed our expectations every year. It is the perfect opportunity to get in touch with visitors from all over the world and to discuss what Mimaki can do to take their businesses to the next level.” Full details on Mimaki’s significant product range, which encompasses the sign and graphics, industrial and textile sectors can be found by visiting www.hybridservices.co.uk

PIXEL PROPHET

HELD TO RANSOM Inevitably, terrible events in the all too real world dominated the recent news, and will have taken attention away from the fact that earlier in May there was another type of attack; this one in the cyber world. Martin Christie writes…

[T]

he so-called ransomware bug that hit the computers of the NHS in this country, as well as other businesses in 99 countries worldwide, now seems like it was a big news story in the media for one long weekend, and has now been consigned to the history bin. Unfortunately, though it no longer makes headlines, it hasn’t gone away, and as the real terrorists, it will be back, in one form or another, and possibly even more deadly. We’ve been familiar with threats of infections on our computers for years, whether malicious or accidental. What makes the next generation of the virus so effective is the fact that so many of the things we use every day, and rely on, are connected to the internet and controlled by processors that have potentially vulnerable operating systems. In the wake of the attack, a host of IT experts was wheeled out in front of the press to explain how it was possible and so highly predictable, all so very wise after the event. You have to wonder what they were doing about it beforehand. Much of the attention was directed to Microsoft’s software, and in particular, the now discontinued XP. Launched in 2001 it dominated operational systems for the next decade, including being the platform on which many of our smart printers rely. Millions of computers still use XP, particularly in Africa and Asia, simply because of the

complexity and cost of upgrading, which necessarily includes both software and hardware. Others may have preferred to hold onto existing proven systems rather than risk complications with a new version with unknown flaws. Vista and Windows 8 come to mind as products Mircosoft would probably prefer to forget, which is why they renamed the latest version number 10, so it would appear to be a major step forward rather than an upgrade. Computers with Windows 8 and 10 apparently are invulnerable to the last attack - at least until the next one. Windows 7, which was vulnerable, is at least receiving regular upgrades and fixes and will continue to do so. Windows XP, which stopped being installed on most new computers since 2008, had its support withdrawn by Microsoft in April 2014 Users can still pay for updates through Microsoft’s Custom Support service, but the company isn’t deploying patches publicly, and although an emergency patch was issued over the attack weekend to protect against the ransomware, it was too late for NHS and countless other victims, and plaster over an open wound comes to mind. Of course, Microsoft says that XP is very old, and it has outgrown its use. If a decade is a long time in cyberspace, it really is not that long in the world of real figures and costs where things have to be planned and budgeted, and the real costs of development placed in the context of

actual profitability. They will point out that for some time the upgrade to Windows 10 was free, something that was as much use to them as to users. But the real cost to the end user is that software upgrades are outrunning their hardware and that it is the embedded systems that also need to be upgraded that have to be factored into the equation. There’s no more stark example of this than modern mobile phones using Android. Google puts out a new version of the operating system roughly every ten months, but hardware manufacturers can’t keep up, and a two-yearold handset can become effectively out of date because it doesn’t have the processing power to keep up with the latest must-have features. For the same reason, it will also make them vulnerable to possible danger falling behind on security updates. For phones, read satellite navigation, hole in the wall cash machines, or anything that depends on electronic information exchange to simply function, and the implications are profound. There is no simple fix for the digital house of cards we have created, or allowed to be created in the name of convenience. Way back in the days of the Cold War, when the technical arms race between the Soviets and the States was at its height, a Russian pilot defected bringing his Mig fighter with him and giving the American military a chance to climb all over it. They were perplexed to discover that, unlike their high-tech weaponry, the actual technology was very basic including apparently antique valve radio and radar. This was a source of some amusement until some boffin pointed out that an electromagnetic pulse generated by a nuclear exchange would take out all of that electrical wonder, but the Migs would still be flying. One of the unique selling points of the current Eurofighter, the Typhon, is that it is so aerodynamically unstable that it couldn’t fly in a straight line without continual adjustments from its sophisticated computer systems - something the humble bubble bee seems to manage quite well without. I’m certainly not advocating a return to the stone age, or even the sixties, but just underlining that the total reliance on technology makes us so susceptible to even a minor glitch, let alone a major one. I’m happy to take advantage of all

the wonderful benefits of computer aided life, but old enough to have lived through an age that required more self-reliance and anticipation, and it does give you a healthy amount of scepticism regarding anything that claims to be intelligent but doesn’t have a pulse. The real issue is that there is no long term answer, only a continuing problem, and a possible escalation of the consequences. Flaws in the software, when they are discovered, are cured with a patch, but that is only a short-term solution until the next flaw is found, and so on. Sometimes the patch may cure one problem but inadvertently cause another as yet unforeseen. Logically the only certain cure is to take out the whole operating system and start again with a new one, but that is completely impractical as we are talking about every computer and processing device in the world. And even that will only work till the next problem inevitably arises. Although they have quaint names like bugs and viruses, they don’t just pop out of the blue like a plague; they are created. Until the machines are smart enough to wreak havoc on their own in the real world and not just in works of science fiction, there is a human finger on the buttons either with malicious intent or incompetence. And it’s not just spotty geeks in back bedrooms with time on their hands, or evil geniuses plotting global dominance from some dark bunker, it’s government agencies specifically designed to keep the systems safe and trawl for weaknesses that stumble across the demon seed. And in a world where even the ‘secretest’ of services seems prone to leaks, it’s invertible that it will get loose - something which apparently originated

the May bug. Just as alarming, for those viruses that have appeared, there may be much more lying dormant, yet to be discovered as they slip seamlessly into connected devices, waiting to be triggered in the future. Not a very comfortable prospect, but at least being aware is a sort of protection. It is those who blindly trust all the electrical intelligence who put themselves in danger of being held to ransom by their own devices.

And now for something completely different… We’ve had this little gadget kicking around on the desktop for a few months and it’s one of those, it will come in handy even if I don’t need it things. It’s a portable digital microscope that will not

only view items in minute detail, but can store the results in digital form to save, share and compare. Because it’s digital it can also measure and scale captured information. In the print industry so far it has mostly been used for examining lithographic plates down to individual dots per square inch, but it could equally check the output resolution of digital print. Vi tiny make several digital devices for different application but the VT101 is pocket sized, powered by rechargeable batteries, with a USB connection to a PC or laptop. It has a 1.8inch colour LCD screen and its tiny camera captures at 640x480 pixels, illuminating the subject with four white LED lights in the head. These lights are adjustable, to allow for the reflective nature of the surface being examined, as is the white balance, and there are also custom effects selected by the simple push button controls, including a dual window view. The lens has a magnification of 7x to 108x, having an optical option to 27x and four times with digital, and has a remarkable sharpness for its compact size. With a mere 2Mb of internal memory, it can still store up to 60 JPG images at a time, and mated to the software on a computer can give you a visual record of percentage dot size, screen angle and the like, as well as being able to compare individual sample. Being able to check, and digitally examine, minute detail, and being portable, the VT101 has any number of uses, even checking for counterfeit money, so we’ll let you know what jobs we can find for it in future issues. www.ccdotmeter.com

PEFC Stakeholder Day — Global Forest Impacts The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), has announced its regular Annual Stakeholder Day will take place at the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NVCO), London, Tuesday 4 July. This year’s theme will be Delivering Impacts in the Forest with speakers from the UK and overseas providing a Dr Melvin Gumal snapshot of the importance of forest certification and how it is affecting forests in North America, Asia and Europe. Although the UK has one of the lowest forest cover areas in Europe — just 13%, compared to 75% in Finland, 32% in Germany and 29% in France — it is the sixth largest consumer market in the world and the fifth largest timber importer. The presentations will enable those who are trading in certified forest products to learn more about what lies behind the PEFC label and the difference forest certification is making on the ground. Speakers from around the world will illustrate the vital importance of forests to biodiversity, rural development and carbon sequestration.

Through its Carbon Capture Scheme, Premier Paper has, to date, raised more than £500,000 for the Woodland Trust. The Premier Paper Group has announced that through working with its customers, it has raised more than a half a million pounds to support the work of the Woodland Trust, funding the planting of 87.5 hectares of new native UK woodland — an area equivalent to 122 international sized football pitches. Premier first started working with the Woodland Trust in 2011 and by the end of 2016 the company had raised £519,000 for the charity through sales of the company’s Woodland Trust Office Paper and its Carbon Capture Programme. Appropriately the story started in a Woodland Trust woodland, Pepper Wood, in rural Worcestershire, where Premier’s Group Marketing Director David Jones first came up with the idea of working with the charity and set about formulating the Carbon Capture programme which has quickly become the Woodland Trust’s leading Woodland Carbon initiative. Premier’s Carbon Capture programme gives customers the opportunity to capture the CO2 emissions from the manufacture and distribution of the paper that they buy and to help the Woodland Trust to create new native woodland that has an enormous environmental benefit right across the UK. Using guidelines from The Carbon Trust and DEFRA, Premier

Subjects will include the key role that forests play in capturing carbon across North American woodlands from Dr Mark Johnston, of the Saskatchewan Research Council, Ana Rengifo Abbad will showcase Iberia’s cork oak forests and their role in rural development. Dr Melvin Gumal from the Wildlife Conservation Society, Malaysia, will illustrate the vital importance of keeping tropical forests healthy to ensure that future habitats for endangered species are protected, with Confor’s Andrew Heald explaining how biodiversity works from a UK forestry perspective. The afternoon will conclude with a Q&A discussion session chaired by PEFC International’s Peter Latham followed by a networking drinks reception. PEFC UK Chairman, Ross Bradshaw said: “The UK is such a huge marketplace for forest products, encompassing everything from paper cups and packaging materials to joinery products and structural timber that people forget the fundamental role PEFC plays in the forest. We hope that all those joining us for this year’s stakeholder event will be able to gain a better understanding of the impact PEFC certification has on local communities and forest owners and how that translates into the certified material we know so well.” The event will be sponsored by James Latham, Soil Association and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). customers calculates the amount of CO2 generated in the production and distribution of the paper. Customers can then choose to capture the equivalent amount of CO2 by planting trees in the Government accredited Woodland Carbon scheme through the Woodland Trust. The Carbon Capture charge can be as little as 2p per ream of A4 and the amount raised is paid, in its entirety, to the Woodland Trust which then uses the money to plant woodland at accredited sites. The success of the programme is down to the affordability, relevance and marketing benefits of engaging in this highly effective environmental programme. In addition to promotional items and PR initiatives customers receive a certificate detailing the amount of CO2 captured and the area of woodland created. There is also a Woodland Carbon logo, which may be used in conjunction with the paper purchased and any associated print jobs. Karl Mitchell, Director of Fundraising at the Woodland Trust said: “We are really grateful for the terrific support of Premier Paper. Funding the equivalent of 122 football pitches of trees will bring a big boost to the environment – oxygen rich places for people to enjoy and visit and homes for wildlife. Premier Paper loves nothing more than joining us tree planting and clearly shares our love of trees”. Premier and its customers take a hands-on approach when it comes to tree planting. So far they have planted a range of native species trees in woodlands across the UK, including North Wood near Livingstone, Bovey Valley in Devon and the Prince William of Gloucester Barracks in Lincolnshire and in November Premier is hosting its fourth consecutive annual tree planting event, at Heartwood Forest near St Albans. Vast and beautiful, Heartwood is one of the Woodland Trust’s largest native woodland sites. Once an oilseed rape field, Heartwood Forest is a 347 hectare estate of native woodland comprised of pockets of ancient woodland, wildflower meadows, a community orchard and over 500,000 new native trees. Located three miles north of St Albans, Heartwood Forest is easy to get to and definitely worth a visit. MakerBot Replicator+ 3D printer sets benchmark Cardiff and Vale College has selected the MakerBot Replicator+ desktop 3D printer for use on its Product Design Foundation Degree course. Based within the College campus in Cardiff city centre, the 30-week course leads towards a BTEC diploma in 3D design and is carefully tailored to help students develop a range of design skills across many areas of product design, including: industrial; furniture; computer graphics; branding; set and prop design; and spatial design. John Johansson, a design tutor on the course, explains why the college sees the MakerBot as essential: “Central to the course is the study of materials and workshop processes to create models and prototypes. It helps learners achieve critical thinking, outlines 3D computer modelling, and puts historical and contemporary design in context. The MakerBot Replicator+ 3D printer has proved ideal for rapid prototyping and model making for our Foundation Degree learners, and our Makerbot 3D printers have become a core element for our learners’ design process within just the few months since we first implemented them. “The main focus of this has been as part of our Foundation Degree’s first module where they are required to design a high heel shoe to showcase the possibilities of 3D printing. This project allows them to push the process to its limits in an experimental manner. Other examples of 3D printing have been used to produce rapid prototypes of handheld devices that can be used in testing within the time it takes to print the model. In addition to these, our learners and staff have also produced some very nice models for display purposes.” To demonstrate what the MakerBot can do John created a model of a science-fiction themed female warrior. He said: “The intention of the production of this piece was to demonstrate to the learners what the MakerBot is capable of – alongside the application of painting and finishing skills that are part of the course. Following the initial 3D printing

the surface of the model was given about 20 coats of surface filler fluid (available from Model Display Products). This dealt with the bulk of the ridges that occur during 3D printing. Following this the model was given a spray coat of black acrylic primer. Acrylic paint was used to apply colour and tone which was then finished with a thin layer of Testors Dullcoat matt varnish to remove the plastic looking sheen that acrylic normally leaves. Finally a few thin layers of clear gloss varnish were applied to the figure’s armour and goggles. “The components of the model were split into two separate sets of prints to localise any errors. One small misprint occurred during the second batch, however this was easily fixed and the finished piece has provided learners with a benchmark to aim for with their own work.” Les Jones, Antalis National Consumer & Universities Account Manager, outlined the principal benefits of the fifth generation MakerBots: “It is wonderful to see students using state of the art equipment on the Cardiff and Vale College course. The MakerBot Replicator+ 3D printer is the easiest, most versatile way to get from a 3D CAD model to 3D print. Using fused deposition modelling the printer combines substantial build volume with ease of use. The printer’s 100-micron layer resolution can create professional-quality, high-resolution prototypes and complex models for the classroom, business, design studio, architects’ office, or anywhere else people get creative. “It has three connectivity options — USB, Wi-Fi, and Ethernet — which allow for a seamless workflow. Cloud and app-enabled, the printer connects to MakerBot’s software options, including MakerBot Desktop, MakerBot Mobile, and Thingiverse, to provide a simple, effortless yet sophisticated 3D printing experience. www.artsystems.co.uk

OKI reveals agile way to print merchandise Commercial print businesses looking to open up new revenue streams without exorbitant investment costs or a long-drawn out implementation schedule should be looking at OKI. The advantages of transfer media garment and product decoration over alternate methods such as screen printing, direct-to-garment and sublimation. OKI have been demonstrating the simplicity of operation at FESPA last month and explaining the low capital purchase and running costs. OKI’s solution dispenses with the additional costs associated with alternate methods of production such as pretreatment and drying booths, on-going inkjet maintenance or the time consuming production of silk screens. OKI’s small footprint devices, combined with its unrivalled print quality in white or dazzling neon for both dark and light coloured products, is opening new possibilities for print shops of all types and sizes. Now businesses have the capability to produce short run personalisation, cost effectively removing all the barriers to digital garment and product decoration. Visitors

could see a range of finished printed garments and other creative merchandise from cotton and man-made synthetic fabrics to glass, metal, acrylic and even wood. OKI is known for its breakthrough devices such as the Pro 6410 NeonColor which brings merchandise to life with its luminescent colour and the Pro7411 WT which prints every colour including white on dark and transparent media. These, combined with OKI’s renowned flexible media handling which allows high quality, durable results on fabric, ceramics, wood, metal, glass and more, mean that users have fewer limitations on their creativity. OKI also unveiled a new addition to its already popular and award winning white toner range, exclusively at FESPA this year. “Unlike screen printing or direct to garment, transfer media printing requires no pretreatment or additional drying equipment making it the best choice when printing short run on-demand to tight timescales . In fact it’s viable to print a minimum order of one while the customer waits — compared to a minimum order quantity of around 200 pieces when

screen printing. So, for short runs the choice becomes simple,” says Dave Willcox, Product Marketing Manager, OKI Europe Ltd. In addition to the White Toner and Neon Toner range, OKI also showed its award winning five colour portfolio taking colour beyond CMYK. A further highlight was the renowned ColorPainter family of large format printers that deliver outstanding output on a range of media for indoor and outdoor use. www.okieurope.com/events

READERS’ SCRIBES

SOMETHING TO SHARE…? Minute Meal Yesterday, I ate a clock. It was very time consuming. Especially when I went back for seconds.

Sleeping Road Crew A man worked for a road crew. One day he woke up ill with a touch of laryngitis, but being a dedicated employee, he went to work. The boss felt rather sorry for the worker and didn’t want him to do any physical labour, as they were repairing a part of the carriageway. He says, “Why don’t you go down the road and tell people to slow down going through the construction?” The worker is glad for the easy day. He stops the first vehicle. “Sir,” he whispers, his throat feeling worse, “please slow down, there’s a road crew up ahead.” “Okay,” the driver whispers back, “I’ll try not to wake them.”

Dog Plants A teacher was telling her class about plant names that have the word “dog” in them, such as dogrose, dogwood, dog violet. She asked the class if they could name another flower with the preface “dog”. Steven raised his hand and said, “Sure Miss Jones. How about a ‘collie’ flower?”

The Optimist’s Blood What blood type does an optimist have? B positive.

Biggest Jerk Bob was in his usual place, sitting at the table, reading the news. He came across an article about a beautiful actress who was about to marry a man who was known primarily for his bad behaviour and lack of good manners. He turned to his wife with a look of bewilderment on his face. “I’ll never understand why the biggest jerks get the most attractive wives.” His wife replies, “Why, thank you, dear!”

Starting that Diet

My friend Kimberly announced that she had started a diet to lose some pounds she had put on recently. “Good!” I exclaimed. “I’m ready to start a diet too. We can be dieting buddies and help each other out. When I feel the urge to drive out and get a burger and fries, I’ll call you first.” “Great!” she replied. “I’ll ride with you.”

Relative Comfort

As my sister relaxed on the couch, her head comfortably leaning against the crook of her husband’s arm, her mobile phone beeped. She looked at her phone. It was a text message from her husband. The message: “Please Move.”

Everyone Has It!

Everyone has a photographic memory! Difference is some do not have any film.

The Priest and the Nun

A priest and a nun were lost in a snowstorm. After a while, they came upon a small cabin. Being exhausted, they prepared to go to sleep. There was a stack of blankets and a sleeping bag on the floor but only one bed. Being a gentleman, the priest said, “Sister, you sleep on the bed. I’ll sleep on the floor in the sleeping bag.” Just as he got zipped up in the bag and was beginning to fall asleep, the nun said “Father, I’m cold.” He unzipped the sleeping bag, got up, got the blanket and put it on her. Once again, he got into the sleeping bag, zipped it up and started to drift off to sleep when the nun once again said, “Father, I’m still very cold.” He unzipped the bag, got up again, put another blanket on her and got into the sleeping bag once again. Just as his eyes closed, she said, “Father, I’m sooooo cold.” This time, he remained there and said, “Sister, I have an idea. We’re out here in the wilderness where no one will ever know what happened. Let’s pretend we’re married.” The nun said, “That’s fine by me.” To which the priest yelled out, “Get up and get your own stupid blanket!”

Counting Sheep

Suspecting he had a serious medical condition, I nagged my husband until he agreed to see a doctor. Once there, he was handed a mountain of forms to fill out. Next to ‘Reason for visit’ he wrote, “My wife made me.” My son and his wife stopped by on Sunday on an unannounced to visit. I wouldn’t answer the door but I did hold up my new medicine container and pointed to the instructions. Instructions read: “Take one tablet before bedtime and keep away from children.”

I want to become a Politician

“Dad, I want to become a politician,” said Jim. His father asked, “And what are you doing to become one?” “Nothing, dad.” “Good, you’re halfway there then.”

Bank Holiday Fruitcake

Ingredients: 1 cup sugar; 4 large eggs; 2 cups dried fruit; 1 teaspoon of salt; 1 cup brown sugar; 1 teaspoon lemon juice; 1/2 cup nuts; 1 cup butter; 1 BOTTLE WHISKY. Procedure: Sample the whisky to check for quality. Get out a large bowl. Check the whisky again, to be sure it is of the highest quality, pour one level cup and drink it. Turn on the electric mixer and beat one cup of butter in the large bowl. Add one teaspoon of sugar and beat again. Make sure the whisky is still OK. Cry another tup. Turn off the mixer. Beat two leggs and add to the bowl. Chuck in one cup of fried druit. Mix on the turner. If fried druit gets stuck in the beatererers, pry it loose with a drewscriver. Sample the whisky and check for tonsisticity. Next, sift two cups of salt or something? Who cares? Check the whisky again. Now sift the lemon juice and strain your nuts. Add one table. Spoon. Sugar or something. Whatever. Grease the oven. Turn the cake tin 350 degrees. Don’t forget to beat off the turner. Throw the bowl out the window. Check the whisky again and go to bed.

Warning signs these days are getting ridiculous. ‘Warning, contains nuts’ on a pack of nuts, ‘Please mind the gap’ when stepping off a train. What are we, idiots? I even saw one the other day telling me to ‘refuse to be put in a bin’. Accountant: “Doctor, I just can’t get to sleep at night.” Doctor: “Have you tried counting sheep?” Accountant: “Yes, and that’s the problem! I make a mistake and then spend three hours trying to find it!”

Could be true?

Famed composer Johann Strauss was an avid mountain climber who once waltzed himself into deep trouble. He lost his footing and found himself hanging by his fingertips over a bottomless gorge. Another climber heroically came to his rescue and just managed to grab Johann by a strap of his backpack to save the Maestro’s life. Since then, the act of trying to get out of a seemingly hopeless situation has come to be known as grasping at Strauss.

A copier saleslady decides to try horseback riding, even though she has had no lessons or prior experience. She mounts the horse unassisted and the horse immediately springs into motion. It gallops along at a steady rhythmic pace, but the saleswoman begins to slip from the saddle. In terror, she grabs for the horse’s mane, but cannot seem to get a firm grip. She tries to throw her arms around the horse’s neck, but she slides down the side of the horse anyway. The horse gallops along, seemingly oblivious to its slipping rider. Finally, giving up her frail grip, she leaps away from the horse to try and throw herself to safety. Unfortunately, her foot has become entangled in the stirrup and she is now at the mercy of the horse’s pounding hooves as her head is struck against the ground again and again. As her head is battered against the ground, she is mere moments away from unconsciousness when...Stan the Asda manager runs out to shut the horse off.
