Easy to say but what does it mean? Adding value, security and depth to print is the current trend to keep up with either in-house or as a trade service. The print runs may be low volume but key to a whole project and secure the larger conventional print job. As our remit is to keep all print pioneers in the premier league, I have been talking to industry guru John Wiper at Scodify who will be helping QPP readers with high-level multi coat print enhancement. My thought is when something brand new goes over your head, delegate to a young designer orientated, pre-press skilled member of your team who wants to expand your finishing repertoire with prestigious print. Route One Print: new round of investments Over the last four years, Route One Print has invested over £20 million into their factory and they don’t intend to slow down any time soon as they get ready to install their first new press this year. Route One Print are proud to say that none of their equipment is more than five years old as they constantly update their factory with the very latest in print technology. Always looking to the future, Route One Print are keen to pioneer new advancements. In their latest batch of investments, the company installed a Fujifilm Jet Press 720S to produce all their business card orders. They predict that, with all its recent developments, ink jet technology could be about to overtake litho as the benchmark of print quality. Their theory was justified after 75% of their customers claimed to prefer ink jet to litho in a blind test. “The Jet Press is by far and away one of the highest quality printers we’ve seen.” Says Adam Carnell, Managing Director. Mr Carnell is clear that the future of print is digital in his eyes. “By moving to inkjet printing, manufacturing time will be reduced significantly. That means that we will be able to offer same day dispatch for our customers on a wider range of

Run for the hills

London-based design studio Run For The Hills has collaborated with cult Soho restaurant, Kricket, to design its debut cookbook, published by Hardie Grant Books featuring over 80 Indian-inspired recipes including many of their much-loved dishes. Kricket was founded by Will Bowlby and Rik Campbell in 2015 when they began serving their unique small plates out of a 20-seater shipping container in Brixton, before opening up their first permanent venue in Soho, which quickly gained a fan base amongst diners and chefs alike, picking up the Bib Gourmand by The Michelin Guide, and best newcomer in The Asian Curry Awards within its first year. Run ForThe Hills has a long history with the brand working on Kricket’s creative identity, website, and designing the interior of its Central London restaurants, including the recently opened Kricket in Brixton. The author, Will, is an established award-winning chef, recognised for his re-invention of much-loved Indian cuisine and making Indian flavours even more accessible, through adding essential Indian spicing to seasonal British ingredients, creating entirely unique and show-stopping street-food dishes that are perfect for sharing. Chris Trotman, Creative Director of Run For The Hills, comments “we were absolutely delighted to design Will’s cookbook, being passionate about book design. Will wanted the book to feel part of the Kricket family but to also stand out in its own right. Our aim was for it to be super-stylish and really pop out from the rest of the books on the shelf.” For the cookbook’s graphic look and feel, Run ForThe Hills took inspiration from the design of the restaurants. The fish scale tiles, a signature feature in the cocktail den basement of Kricket Soho, have been replicated and a new mandala, made by the repetition of Kricket’s ‘K’ logo, run throughout the book. These two motifs frame Hugh Johnson’s photography beautifully. A range of new, quirky illustrations bring each chapter introduction spread to life. A colour palette of blush, inky blue and Kricket’s orange-red brand colour keep the book feeling young, fresh and edgy, using playful, urban typography and opting for a bold, colourpop seam. www.runforthehills.com

Apprentices awards for Scotland’s print industry Print Scotland, the trade association and voice of Scotland’s graphic communication industry, has held its third Annual Scottish Print Apprentice of the Year award. The occasion is part of its mission to represent the Scottish print community and to highlight the profile of future leaders of the industry. Garry Richmond, Director of Print Scotland, said: “The sterling efforts of these young apprentices in getting to grips with the challenges of a rewarding career in print and print finishing are rightly rewarded today. “Their family and friends can be very proud of their achievements. The print industry in Scotland is demonstrating slow but steady signs of growth year-on-year, and nowhere shows this more than in apprenticeships. Already this year our members have taken on three more apprentices than last year.” The winners were: · Overall Apprentice of Year — Robert Scott, Richardson & Sons (based in Hawick) · Level 2 Post Press — James McCredie, Bell & Bain (Glasgow) · Level 2 Press — James Taylor, Bell & Bain (Glasgow) · Level 3 Pre Press — William Little, Service Graphics (Glasgow) · Level 3 Post Press — Daniel Johnstone, Tradeprint (Dundee) · Level 3 Press – Martin Maclean, Love & Humphries (Port Glasgow) The awards event was well attended and included family and friends of the winners. Kevin Creechan, President of Print Scotland, congratulated the winners while James Vallance, Apprentice Manager, offered an insight into the progress of each apprentice. Print Scotland provides training for Modern Apprentices through the Scottish Training Scheme, which provides a grant from the Scottish Government to cover the cost of the training. It also provides a range of Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) as well as Modern Apprenticeship (MA) certification. Mr Richmond concluded the evening with a note of cautious optimism for the print industry: “Our members, and the industry as a whole, faces a significant succession gap in the next ten years, as highly-skilled and knowledgeable printers set on retiring are not being replaced in sufficient volume with new blood. “The print industry in Scotland needs a constant flow of apprentices to prevent that, and the high-calibre young people we have celebrated this evening, in even greater numbers, is very much what our industry needs.”

Details about each winner: Robert Scott, 21 and born in Hawick, won the Overall Apprentice of the Year award. Robert is a Digital Artwork Operator for Richardson and Sons of Hawick. Robert is part of the proud Hawick piping tradition, and competes in European piping competitions. He hopes to play at the Tartan Parade in New York next year. In addition to this, he is a keen actor with the local Hawick theatre and has his own photography business. James McCredie, aged 22 and a Glasgow native, won the Level 2 Post Press award. This relates to the post pressing work of a printer, namely mechanised print finishing. James is a Post Press operator for Bell & Bain, one of the largest and oldest independent UK book, journal printers and binders. James is an ex-Boys Brigade officer, and spends his spare time in the dojo, practicing karate. James Taylor, 22 and born in Glasgow, took home the award for Level 2 Press Apprentice of the Year. Press is the category covering the physical printing, be it lithographic or flexographic. James is a Lithographic Press operator for Bell & Bain, one of the largest and oldest independent UK book, journal printers and binders. A keen footballer and keep fit enthusiast, James spends his time off the pitch supporting his beloved Glasgow Rangers or socialising with friends. William Little, 21 years old and born in Glasgow, won the award for Level 3 Pre-Press Apprentice of the Year. This was awarded for the pre-printing aspects of the profession, such as graphic design, digital print and origination. William works as a Graphic Installer for Service Graphics of Glasgow. In his spare time, he enjoys amateur football and spending time with his friends. He is an avid consumer of most

brands of music, and has a developing fondness for tattoos and body art. Daniel Johnstone, aged 24 and born in Dundee, won the Level 3 Post Press Apprentice of the Year for his work in the post pressing work of a printer, namely mechanised print finishing. Daniel works as a Post Press operator for Tradeprint, the UK trade printing reseller service. When not working, he is a keen runner and enjoys all aspects of keeping fit. He is an enthusiastic amateur footballer, playing for his local Sunday League. Martin Maclean, 20, and born in Greenock, took home the award for Level 3 Press Apprentice of the Year. Press is the category covering the physical printing, be it lithographic or flexographic. Martin works as a Lithographic and Digital Press operator for Love & Humphries of Port Glasgow. ‘Downtime…is not an option’ Renault Sport Formula One Team unveiled the new livery for its racing car in February: a slick black and yellow design with graphics printed with Roland DG equipment. Renault Sport Formula One Team has relied on Roland DG for its racing car vehicle graphics for a number of years, using a Roland TrueVIS VG640 wide-format inkjet printer/cutter at its Technical Centre in Enstone, Oxfordshire, where its racing cars are designed and manufactured. The paint and graphics studio was on total lock-down ahead of the livery launch, with its staff sworn to secrecy over the design. Renault Sport Formula One Team’s cars will compete in 21 Grand Prixs around the world this year, with an audience of more than 400 million viewers. Brand exposure plays an essential role in sponsorship programmes and it is essential that the livery is reproduced accurately. If any sticker gets damaged or dirty, the team will replace it immediately. Joe McNamara, Head of Paint and Graphics at Renault Sport Formula One Team, explains that, to make sure this is possible, racing cars always travel with a number of sticker sets, all printed on the Roland TrueVIS VG-640. “The team always carries 30 versions of every sticker so they can be replaced if needed. This amounts to around 1,400 stickers for every race,” he says. “Eighty per cent of the stickers are sponsor-related so they have to be replaced with absolute precision.” While normally Renault Sport Formula One Team’s expertise makes this process go as smoothly as changing a tyre, Joe McNamara knows he has the back-up of Roland users around the world who can print the designs quickly and accurately if need be. “It’s comforting to know that, if necessary, I can find a graphics company with a TrueVIS VG-640 that is local to the track, to whom I can email a file and all they need to do I s hit ‘play’ at their end to produce perfect stickers,” he comments. “I won’t see a difference between their stickers

and ours. We really are part of a Roland family, all over the world.” In addition to the TrueVIS VG-640, Renault Sport Formula One Team studio uses a Roland CAMM-1 GX vinyl cutter – soon to be upgraded to the latest GR-640 model. The team also uses four Roland MDX-540 milling machines to manufacture Rohacell® foam cores for some car parts that require this dense but very lightweight foam sheet material. “The Roland MDX machines are known here as phenomenal workhorses, they just don’t go wrong,” says Joe. “In fact, every Roland machine we use is hugely reliable. The VG-640 is quick, accurate, easy to operate and easy to clean and the four MDX machines are simply bulletproof. “We don’t have downtime here. It’s not an option.” www.renaultsport.com • www.rolanddg.co.uk

MarkAndy Open House Invite It has been a few weeks since the announcement that MarkAndy acquired Presstek. Things have been moving quickly and their first joint venture has been announced. From the 6th to 8th June Presstek and MarkAndy will host a joint open house event at their Uxbridge facility in London. They will exhibit the Presstek 34DI with LED UV technology and the MarkAndy Digital One entry level label press. The Open House will consist of a morning, afternoon, and evening session repeated each of the three days. Programming for all time slots will address advancements catered to printers and converters across the industry spectrum highlighting productivity gains. The attendee pool is expected to consist of commercial printers interested in expanding their offset business into labels and label converters looking to enter the digital production space. Additionally, as many European print shops adopt both offset and flexographic technologies, the event provides those in attendance an opportunity to learn how to evolve both production process into the future to gain a larger share of wallet for existing customers. Live demonstrations of MarkAndy Digital One label press and Presstek 34DI digital offset press with ECO-UV will be conducted. Digital One and ECO-UV equipped DI are proven technologies that reduce turnaround time, produce high-quality work, and increase efficiency for their owners. Both solutions reinforce MarkAndy’s core belief that it’s not about the technology you produce work on, but the way to be most profitable and meet customer needs. This will be brought to life through real-time runs of commercial print work on Digital One and prime labels on the DI press, bending the norms of what each technology can support. Newman Thomson XMPie Web-to-Print system UK-based print provider, Newman Thomson, produces a wide variety of magazines, brochures, publications, pharmaceutical documents and point-of-sale materials. When the company wanted to future-proof their business by streamlining the workflow of its print orders to drive efficiencies and simplify the process for customers, they turned to webto-print and purchased XMPie PersonalEffect StoreFlow with its built-in VDP features and an end-to-end Adobe InDesign workflow. “XMPie PersonalEffect StoreFlow gives us everything we need in a web-to-print system. We didn’t need countless add-ons or extra development time to tailor the system to fit our needs.” said James Vaisey, Marketing and Web to Print Manager, Newman Thomson. “For us, it was critical to have an all-in-one system that could simplify existing workflow processes, support growing business needs, have constantly evolving functionality, and that seamlessly integrates with Adobe InDesign and our MIS system. XMPie’s solution does all of that, and so much more.” Before selecting PersonalEffect StoreFlow, Newman Thomson’s workflow consisted of customers placing orders directly with their account managers, who processed the jobs in the Management Information System (MIS) and handled the artwork for pre-press. From there, the production and dispatch team would complete the order. With XMPie’s

help, the company has streamlined many of the intermediary touch points that once burdened the efficiency of the process. Newman Thomson also uses Xerox FreeFlow Core to automate and integrate the processing of print jobs — from file preparation to final production. “We have a wide spectrum of customers, from the ‘walk-in’ customer wanting 500 business cards, 1500 letterheads and a pull up banner for their start-up business, all the way through to multinational conglomerates ordering complex data-driven documents,” Vaisey added. “I think XMPie has a place for each one of those, it turns a walk-in who previously would have required a fair amount of time/input versus profit return, into a very efficient quick turnaround job. Conversely, a multinational can feel safe in the knowledge that all the artwork is securely locked down, that the job will be consistent, and the time and cost spent on designing and checking would be vastly reduced on both the client side and our side.” Newman Thomson not only made an investment in a web-to-print solution, but an investment in the future of its business. They currently serve a range of clients — from small businesses to large enterprises — and their new web-to-print system will allow them to offer services to a whole new set of clients that they have previously not been able to target. They

now have a powerful new sales tool in their arsenal to help them stand out from the crowd. “XMPie gives us the means to go into a client meeting with something that makes us stand out and show that we can save our clients time and money,” said Vaisey. “Trust is a valuable commodity in the business landscape and giving customers the ability to effectively and easily buy print and other products while simultaneously looking after their branding helps build and nurture that trust for a long business relationship.” www.newmanthomson.com

i-SUB moves Bang Tidy Clothing into new dimensions Bang Tidy Clothing has partnered with digital textile solutions expert i-SUB Ltd to offer a specialist dye-sublimation print service onto large format aluminium sheets from METal. Using a brand-new Epson SureColour-F7200 printer and a Monti Antonio Maxi MOD200 industrial heat press, Bang Tidy Clothing is the only company in the UK currently able to produce full-size high-quality sublimation aluminium up to 8’x4’ (2.4m x 1.2m). i-SUB identified that Bang Tidy Clothing’s machine setup and production workflow would enable the company to deliver this high-quality, high-end new product. Using specific rigid media sublimation paper and rigid media printer settings and press settings, the new Epson printer and Monti Antonio heat press print the full size METal aluminium sheets, delivering a unique, highquality gloss and hugely flexible solution. Nick Collinson, Managing Director of Bang Tidy Clothing, comments: “We have worked with i-SUB for many years, purchasing a large range of

equipment from them and we have a strong and mutually supportive relationship. They told us that with the new Monti Antonio Maxi MOD200 heat press we could be a trailblazer in the UK for the METal aluminium solution. We carried out extensive testing and were very impressed with the quality of the finished product and could immediately see that this could open whole new markets for our business.” METal aluminium sheets have a specially developed polymer coating for dye sublimation, producing a perfectly flat, glossy, richly colourful high-quality image. The aluminium is 1mm thick, and once printed can be displayed flat, curved or even folded. “It is an amazingly flexible solution. There are lots of people that can print onto small format aluminium, but to create something digitally with the impact and presence of an 8’x4’ aluminium sheet is not something available elsewhere in the UK. We can also produce these at a hugely competitive price,” adds Collinson.

The new Epson SureColour F7200 printer is a professional digital dye-sublimation roll-to-roll printer developed specifically for the production of high-quality printed textile. It has proven to be ideal for the METal solution mainly thanks to its highly developed Epson printhead/software technology and integrated heater/dryer. It prints a reverse image onto transfer paper, which is then run through the Monti Antonio, which uses heat and pressure to turn the ink into a gas that sublimates onto the specialised coating of the METal aluminium sheets. Once sublimated, the printed aluminium can be bent, folded or rolled, and it can also be laser cut it into all sorts of intricate shapes. nick@bangtidyclothing.co.uk www.i-sub.co.uk

New Xerox Iridesse™ production press The company that invented the copier, laser printing and print-ondemand has announced another first in the world of print — a high speed, six station colour press that combines four colour printing with up to two speciality dry inks in one printing pass. The Xerox Iridesse™ Production Press is the only digital press that can print metallic gold or silver dry ink, CMYK and clear dry ink in a single pass, with powerful new colour management and automation features, giving print providers an immediate competitive edge in the growing digital print enhancement market. “Iridesse can do things no other digital production press can do, but it’s what it can do for our customers that’s most important,” said Ragni Mehta, vice president and general manager, Cut Sheet Business, Xerox. “We created the press to produce these special effects and digital enhancements cost effectively and in a simplified workflow so our customers can seize the market opportunity and grow their businesses.” Iridesse eliminates multiple presses and processes usually required for print embellishments, increasing capacity and profits for customers “Iridesse’s one-pass capability, workflow automation for incorporating metallics and varnishes combined with run-time quality control technology is a differentiator for Xerox and can give print providers a competitive advantage,” said Ron Gilboa, group director, Production Technology, Keypoint Intelligence-InfoTrends. With two inline speciality dry ink stations, customers can create lucrative applications with spot colours, metallic and mixed metallic gradients, and special enhancements. Gold and silver dry metallic inks can be used on their own or layered under or over CMYK to create unique iridescent palettes. A layer of clear dry ink can be added for an extra touch of dimension or texture. No designer, no problem — Xerox FreeFlow® Core’s pre-built workflows enable print providers to automatically and selectively transform text and graphics for printing gold and silver without editing the source documents. This simplifies enhancing existing applications with highvalue embellishments. Printing at speeds up to 120 pages per minute, the press can run stocks from 52 -400 gsm. Additional press features include:

• The High Definition Emulsion Aggregate (HD EA) Toner process results in the optimal particle size to deliver lower gloss, smooth tints and fine detail more consistently. • The Xerox EX-P 6 Print Server by Fiery® enables customers to create customised workflows for metallic applications with advanced RIP capabilities and colour management tools. • Two Dual Advanced High Capacity Feeders, Bypass and Inserter options let customers run up to eight different stocks in a single job, or do production runs with a total of 12,500 sheets. • A variety of finishing options are available including the new Xerox Crease and Two-sided Trimmer, which creates a durable crease fold and gives booklets a premium quality edge when used with the Xerox Production Ready Booklet Maker Finisher and Xerox SquareFold Trimmer Modules. The Iridesse Production Press is available now. Please check with your local sales representative for regional availability. www.xerox.com

Mimaki enhances textile printing with Tiger-1800B MkII Mimaki has announced that its production-class Tiger-1800B digital textile printer family has been enhanced with new features and capabilities as the company continues to drive higher quality in digital textile printing. The Tiger-1800B MkII, which debuted at FESPA offers an additional high-quality mode at 1,200dpi and several enhancements to improve quality, including reduction of banding and other printing defects. “The conventional-to-digital transformation continues to heat up in textiles and apparel, and Mimaki, an early mover in this space, is dedicated to bringing affordable, industry-leading solutions to this segment,” said Bert Benckhuysen, Product Manager EMEA at Mimaki Europe. “The Tiger-1800B MkII printers, available in two models for direct to textile and heat transfer sublimation, are just another example of this strategy in action. And our strategy goes beyond simply providing outstanding printers – especially in an emerging market such as this, it is critical to be a Total Solutions Provider. To that end, we are also making available a new range of pre-treatment and post-treatment machines, and we are working towards the development of Internet of Things for Textiles and Apparel market.” Distributed in the UK and Ireland by Hybrid Services Ltd, for those not visiting FESPA, a direct-to-textile Mimaki Tiger-1800B commissioned with reactive dyes for printing to natural fabrics, can be exclusively viewed at the company’s headquarters. Mimaki showed a wide range of solutions at FESPA and the Tiger1800B MkII was definitely one of the high points.

• The Mimaki Tiger-1800B MkII prints at up to 385 square metres per hour and can cover a wide production range, from sample making, to short to medium print runs. An additional 1,200dpi print mode is available for enhanced print quality. • A set of Mimaki’s unique Core Technologies has also been added to the machine. Mimaki Advanced Pass System (MAPS) minimises banding and colour shifting by spreading the edge of

the pass, making the boundary area a gradation, resulting in a smoother printed image. Mimaki’s proven Nozzle Checking Unit (NCU) and Nozzle Recovery System (NRS) are also incorporated in these new printers, enabling continuous high-quality printing even if nozzle errors occur. • Mimaki is also making available an extensive line-up of optional devices to meet just about every fabric and transfer paper printing need. This includes a feeding unit for roll media equipped with a centering device and tension bar; a jumbo roll unit to enable printing of long-length roll fabric or heat transfer paper; and drying and winding or pleating options for printed fabrics. The Tiger-1800B MkII was shown in combination with the jumbo roll of Mimaki Vision Jet-X sublimation transfer paper. Available in 1,620 and 1,830mm widths, the Mimaki Vision Jet-X is lightweight (57g/sq m), but suitable for producing almost everything from sports apparel, flags and banners requiring a high density of ink deposition to fashion and home fabrics with less ink coverage. It yields stable paper feeding and printing, preventing shrinkage and mis-registration of paper. www.hybridservices.co.uk

Zebra Technologies unveils card printing solution Zebra Technologies Corporation has announced a new generation of intelligent card printers and card design software designed to bring high-quality card printing solutions to the security, retail and hospitality industries as well as education and finance institutions. Zebra’s awardwinning design team created the ZC100 and the ZC300 series card printers to redefine traditional card printers and provide a cohesive, consistent experience at every touch point between the user and the printer, including initial set up to reloading cards and changing ribbons to device cleaning. Zebra also announced CardStudio 2.0 software: a complete card design and issuance software suite ideal for creating and printing high quality photo identification (ID) cards like employee badges, access control cards for facility access, membership cards, food safety labeling, event/ seasonal passes and more. Offering a unique industrial design with the slimmest profile and lowest clearance in its class, the ZC100 and ZC300 Series card printers can be installed in space-constrained environments such as under a counter or shelf. The printers also offer customisable covers that allow businesses to create a printer that reflects its environment, making it ideal for any business where brand identity is important. The ZC100 and ZC300 Series card printers feature an advanced card feeder that automatically adjusts to the thickness of each card, eliminating the error-prone process of manually adjusting for different card stocks. Swing-open card output doors and a new ribbon door design simplify the loading and unloading process. By reducing a multi-step process into just one step, ease of use improves along with device uptime while user learning curves are reduced. · Security features include a printer cover lock and reject card bin that prevents card stock theft; printer and host authentication firewalls; and government-grade encryption features that help protect sensitive data in environments where data security is critical like financial organisations. · The new ZC100 and ZC300 Series card printers are supported by Print DNA, a set of utilities and developer tools that deliver a superior printing experience through better performance, simplified remote manageability and easier integration. The printers also offer multiple

connectivity options including Wi-Fi for easy integration during deployment. · The premium ZC350 card printer, a part of the ZC300 series, offers a higher level of rapid printing, smart card encoding and three new ribbons. Zebra ribbons feature built-in smart chips that automatically communicate to the device what type of media is being used and how much media is stocked. Each new ribbon addresses a key customer need such as security, robustness and special effects by offering high durability overlay panels to withstand damage, pearlescent marks to decrease counterfeit copies and metallic/3D capabilities to elevate a card’s look to fit a specific business need such as VIP memberships. · Both the ZC300 and ZC350 card printers feature a graphical, easy-to-use colour LCD with support for 10 languages, plus a new flipper module option enabling dual-sided printing that can be easily upgraded. www.zebra.com

CreaseStream Junior 75

Due to the growing demand for cutting and creasing large format posters, banners and menus etc, Technifold decided to develop and create a wide version CreaseStream machine to take a sheet size of 75cm. They originally produced a first prototype unit for a print company who couldn’t trim the over sized sheets on their guillotine - so they added two of their edgetrimming tools to the unit to solve the dilemma. The CreaseStream Junior 75 is equipped with Tech-ni-Fold’s very latest Tri-Creaser Advance technology which has been specially designed to gently manipulate, stretch and prepare the area of stock that is prone to cracking so that the folds are smooth and damage free. Bypass your guillotine altogether — No need

This impressively built and versatile finishing unit marks the start of a new era in faster digital finishing production. Here are just a few of the benefits…

to use a paper guillotine to trim your poster/ banner to final size, one pass takes care of two edges and a second directional pass (through the reset unit) completes the final trim

• Feeds maximum sheet width of 75cm • Produces three crease styles to match any imaginable stock /print combination • Allows fast hand-feed output of up to 3,000 sheets per hour • Includes two x guillotine quality edge trimming tools • Optional micro-perforation tool available • Simple to set, easy to change crease/ cut/micro-perf styles www.technifold.com

PIXEL PROPHET

JOINED UP THINKING Flicking through some of the 20 years of this magazine for last month’s anniversary issue was an opportunity for Martin Christie to remind ourselves how far we have come because the last two decades mark the period when the digital revolution really picked up speed and its own momentum.

[C]

omputers and processing power had been around for some time before, but now the technology has been placed literally in everybody’s hands. As I have often observed, this can be both good news and bad news. On the positive side, it has not heralded the end of the print industry as many had prophesied — far from it. It’s just that the skills required to operate in the shop environment have changed drastically. What has helped is the remarkable development of software and hardware enabling tasks that would previously have been difficult or impossible. These are tasks that still require judgement and a skilled operative rather than those that simply need a button pushed. Back in the early days of Copy Shop News, as was, I found one of my first columns where I suggested that this novel digital camera might prove to be a useful tool in the studio. Little did I know then just how useful. Back then there was a very limited understanding of resolution and white balance for example and their importance to print output, as well as the potential destructive properties of compressed files. Such things are still a mystery to anyone who’s got no further than the automatic settings on their phone or camera, but should be instinctive to anyone wanting to progress in the present print on demand digital environment. More than ever, as the media continues to chronicle the decline of high street outlets, the real world print counter has to be able to deliver advice and service that cannot be provided on line. People can look at an item in a high street shop and then buy the exact product at a cheaper price online, but they cannot do that so easily with print. The ability to turn whatever comes in through the door, or via email, into a quality reproduction has to be a key factor in the survival of the shop counter. Last month I showed how to use Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom to turn a customer’s assorted collection of images into an attractive and unique presentation for a special occasion, rather than something churned out by a sausage factory. This month’s episode is all about combining scans or digital photos to form a larger image. This is needed when something

comes in that is too big to copy, something that usually comes as a surprise to the average customer, and a happy snappy from their phone is not going to get the job done. Back in the early digital camera days, I did think it might be possible to take several individual images and piece them together when something came in that was way too big for a single shot. It was a good idea but the specification of the camera I was using wasn’t a match for the job. Relying on the camera to process the exposure, white balance and compression resulted in a selection of Jpegs which just would not match up when I tried to fit them together. A frustrating time in Photoshop could not blend in colour differences, or even minor distortions at the edges of the lens. Similar issues occur with multiple scans, even if you are able to fit the original on the scanner. Unless you are able to preview and preset the capture settings, the scanner will automatically adjust for each part of the collection, and is likely to produce a variety of hues and tones that will be very difficult to correct later. If the original doesn’t have a consistent colour coverage, you will have a problem. A dedicated A3 or even A4 desktop flatbed scanner, with an ability to remove the hood, and control the exposure and other settings is an essential tool. Removing the hood means

you can scan all the parts in the same direction, rather than having to turn them around to fit. As all scanners only scan in one direction, this may result in a shadow pattern on some textured surfaces that may prove impossible to remove or mate. A flatbed does enable you to scan more awkward or delicate pieces rather than a roll fed one. With the latter, even if you can adjust feed height and speed, there is a limit to what you can put through without it snagging or slipping in process. Stitching software has been around for some time, but invariably relied on the individual parts being fairly close matches in the first place, otherwise typically computer generated errors could occur, like people having an eye or an arm in the wrong place. Similar software has been used to create panoramas with phone pictures, but in that case it doesn’t make much difference if a landscape has an extra tree or two! For some time I used multiple layers in Photoshop to create composites. By changing the blending options of a top layer from Normal to Difference it can be seamlessly combined with the one below by moving it until the pixels match and the conflicting colours turn to solid black. But this can be quite time consuming on some images, particularly ones with fine lines that need to be joined, so it was a matter of

Quick Print Pro • Digital Imaging

June 2018

judgement knowing how long a job would take or what to charge. Now Abode has provided the solution, available in either Photoshop or Lightroom, and it’s one that fully exploits digital rather than visual technology. Photoshop has had a Photomerge option for some time, but now with complimentary development of content aware, and the intricate analysis of individual pixels and their relation to those around them in colour and shape, the tasks can be almost completely automated. I add the qualification ‘almost’ because my natural instinct is not entirely to put my faith in an electronic brain, but so far the process has done nothing but impress, especially with joining pieces that would be really difficult to do manually. It’s probably easiest to get all the separate images in one folder, and check they are all more or less the right orientation, shape or size. This you can do from Bridge, and just gives Photomerge a little helping hand. You can proceed directly from Bridge using ‘Tools>Photoshop>Photomerge’. Alternatively open the files in Photoshop and go ‘Automate>Photomerge’. When the dialogue box comes up just opt for Currently Open Files. In Lightroom you will already have imported the files or the folder containing them, so select the ones you want to join and go ‘Photo>PhotoMerge>Panorama’. Photoshop and Lightroom do the same digital wizardry in slightly different ways, but both give you the initial option of how you want to assemble the constituent parts to form the

vivid-online.com

whole. In Photoshop you have six choices, but most of the time Auto or Spherical will do the best job. Perspective or Cylindrical may be useful to correct lens distortion, and Collage or Repositional may be better for photographed sections of a larger poster or print. It’s a matter of trial and error at first, and dependent on the content and the desired result, but it takes so little time and is generally so accurate that ditching the first trial for a second or third to get it exactly right is no big deal. Blow the file list box there are four further tick options which can all be selected to ensure smooth edges. Essentially by using Blend, layer masks are created for a seamless joint; Vignette removal irons out light and perspective distortion at the edges of an image, as does Geometric Distortion Correction. Content aware obviously does exactly what it says. The resulting merge is a multi layer Photoshop file which can still be edited if need be after checking all the seams but this is almost certainly necessary. It can then be flattened and saved in whatever file format required. Lightroom conveniently gives you a preview of the three options — Spherical, Cylindrical or Perspective — directly so you can view the alternatives before proceeding. The Auto Crop option is only a clipping tool, probably best left off, but fine tuning can be done with the Boundary Warp slider which will adjust any perspective not sorted in the merge. There are several advantages to using Lightroom if you are working with digital camera files, especially as it is able to work

12 incredible print effects using the

QPP Matrix Strip Ad - 12 Print Effects Matrix Video.indd 1

19

directly from RAW, i.e. unprocessed originals. It will automatically make corrections because it immediately recognises the camera and original settings, and actually outputs in RAW for further processing. Alternatively you can synchronise develop settings across the chosen files so they are consistent before merging. LR will also be aware of the lens used and make slight corrections automatically or manually via the Develop module where a Lens Correction option is hidden in the right hand panel along with several other useful fine tune tools. In Photoshop the files will have been rendered into Tiff or Jpeg files, preferably the former to avoid any possible loss through compression, so Lightroom just skips a process if native files are available. Otherwise any pixel based image can be selected as source. Either programme has the ability to make short work of what would otherwise be a laborious task in trying to piece together the disparate parts of a desired whole, and make it possible for a scanner or a decent digital camera to be a much more useful device for the bureau. As well as the hardware, it’s the knowledge of how to make it work that’s the important advantage. A large scan is valuable in itself, but as it generally also leads to large prints, or at the very least other printing, it’s a profitable service that has no alternative competition. With these tools in hand you can turn a simple scan around quickly or tackle something much more complicated like the two illustrated examples. One is a complex line drawing at A2 size, scanned in four overlapping A3 parts on a flatbed. As with all stitching it’s better to have a nice margin of overlap at least 25 percent to help line everything up as even the slightest tilt angle will be exaggerated from one side of the scan to the other. That’s why trying to join those lines up manually would be a nightmare. The other example is a 1.5m square oil on canvas photographed in four sections with a 24mp digital camera. The artist has used washes and varnish, as well as many layers to give texture and depth which makes it a challenge to blend in the quartet but Lightroom was up to the challenge, and we were able to produce a limited addition of prints very close to the original. I was particularly pleased with that because I had a limited amount of time with the painting when shot, and didn’t have it as a colour reference for the edited prints. More next month.

he three-day exhibition took place at the NEC Birmingham from 24 to 26 April 2018 and offered visitors a host of new interactive show features, as well as access to over 185 leading suppliers and thousands of products and brands. Sign & Digital UK’s 2018 theme — Creativity Brought to Life — was delivered through a range of features. Highlights included lively and inspiring keynote talks and panel debates in The Main Stage theatre. Celebrity retail expert, Mary Portas, delivered a well-received talk with audience Q&A during the show’s opening day. The Main Stage theatre doubled-up as a TV studio, capturing the sessions and filming the many demos, workshops and vibrant exhibition stands across the show floor. Away from The Main Stage theatre, the show floor hosted three dedicated demonstration zones — Décor Live in partnership with Antalis, Vehicle Wrapping Live in partnership with Spandex and Textile Printing Live in partnership with Hybrid Services/Mimaki. These areas showed visitors potential new revenue streams for their businesses, as well as encouraging them to have a go and benefit from one-on-one expert direction. The exhibition attracted a comprehensive range of business visitors from across the whole of the visual communications industry. The number of visitors from the commercial print, event build, creative agency and retail sectors, saw increases, with representatives from high street names such as Debenhams, EDF Energy, Fossil UK, Harrods, H & M, Ikea UK & Ireland, JD Sports, Metro Bank, Screwfix and Superdry attending the show. Rudi Blackett, event director for Sign & Digital UK said: “It’s been another exciting year at Sign & Digital UK. Once again, I would like to say a big thank you to all of the exhibitors, visitors and show partners who supported the 2018 show. It is always a pleasure to see end-users and suppliers come together to do business in a creative and dynamic environment. We are

also grateful to our fantastic line-up of speakers, including the inspirational Mary Portas, for delivering an engaging range of debates and keynote talks at this year’s show. The innovative

new features at the show brought a huge amount of energy and enthusiasm to all three days and we are already looking forward to hosting an even better industry event in 2019.” With a move to new halls (3 & 3A) for 2019, there has been a high demand for stand space, with some big-name exhibitors committing to a larger presence following a standout 2018 show. Sign & Digital UK returns to the NEC, Birmingham from 2 to 4 April 2019 and is free to attend for visitors. THE PRINT SHOW • 18-20 SEPTEMBER 2018

EPSON AND HP ARE GOIN’ LARGE Epson is the latest leading print brand to confirm that it will exhibit at The Print Show 2018, while fellow digital print heavyweight HP hopes to replicate the success it enjoyed last year.

[T]

aking place from September 18th to 20th at the NEC in Birmingham, The Print Show 2018 will be the fourth edition of what is now billed as the UK’s prime print event. A host of major brands have already signed up to exhibit, including HP, Hybrid Services (Mimaki), Duplo, Vivid Laminating Technologies, Morgana Systems, Renz, Ashgate Automation, Premier Paper and CMYUK. This exhibitor list has been bolstered in recent weeks with the addition of Printers Superstore, Smart Print, Vpress, Lion and Active Data Metrics. Epson also joins this growing list of exhibitors having confirmed that it will have a presence at The Print Show for the fourth consecutive year. Epson was at the debut event in 2015 and again in 2016 through reseller partner Colourbyte, before taking on its own stand last year. Phil McMullin, sales manager of Epson UK, described the company’s attendance at The Print Show 2017 as a “big success”, with the firm able to raise its profile in the signage, point of sale and textiles print sectors. “For the first two years of The Print Show we attended in partnership with one of our value added resellers, Colourbyte, and were impressed by the number of leads and sales generated, so much so that Epson exhibited in its own right last year and we will do so again in 2018. “We want to show the breadth of our inkjet solutions and the quality of print that is possible for dye sublimation, textile, label, photographic, POS and signage applications. We expect some of our commercial partners to be exhibiting also, demonstrating an even wider range of applications printed with Epson technology.” With this in mind, McMullin offered an insight into what visitors can expect from Epson at the Print Show 2018. “For the first time at The Print Show, we will demonstrate some A3 and A4 printercopiers that are right for cut sheet commercial printing applications,” McMullin said. “This is in addition to a comprehensive range of wide-format inkjet models from our signage (S series), photography (P series) and textiles (F series) SureColor range. “Expect a modern and eye-catching display to reflect the diversity of products that can

be handled from textiles and décor to wraps, posters, signage, POS and promotional applications.” Another familiar face at The Print Show this year will be Smart Print. Paul Stead, head of production print sales for the company, says the main aim at the event this year will be to speak with visitors about the solutions that matter to their own businesses. Stead said: “The Print Show represents the only real opportunity in 2018 for mass audience interaction. Returning to the NEC should ensure a healthy footfall enabling us to share our message with maximum impact. We are looking for a healthy return on investment and are confident that the Print Show will provide this. “Last year we had a fabulous time, securing many orders at the show and a long list of prospects. As Smart Print has grown, so has our ability to deliver a competent and relevant exhibition. “We have seen the industry faith in The Print Show increase, reflected in attendance and the professional flow of the event. We like how ‘easy’ it is to work with the organisers and enjoy their enthusiasm. This is a very positive event, we like positivity. “Deciding on the most appropriate solutions for our stand is by far the hardest part. With such a wide range it would be easy to select our best selling products and explain why people buy them, but that is not really the Smart Print way. We look for a combination of relevance,

growth and affordability.” Meanwhile, having been one of the first companies to commit to The Print Show 2018, HP has now spoken out over its hopes for this year’s event, with the aim of building on the success it enjoyed in 2017. HP will be back at the show this year at the NEC in Birmingham, with the aim of speaking to visitors about what its technology can do for their print businesses. Anne Sharp, large-format print marketing manager for UK and Ireland at HP, said: “The Print Show 2017 was our inaugural show and it was a great success for HP so we were pleased to sign for the next show in September 2018. “We felt that The Print Show 2017 delivered everything we set-out to achieve. When we attend trade shows, it’s always with the objective of being able to meet and interact with our customers and showcase the best of our technology and applications and enable our customers to come and talk to us about what they need and how we can work together. “HP’s mission is to engineer experiences that amaze and nowhere is that more true than in the world of graphic solutions and large format print,” Sharp said. “You can expect some new developments from HP at the next show in September and as always, we will be showcasing a range of end applications to inspire and educate our customers to the opportunities for business growth.” www.theprintshow.com

Arjowiggins Graphic helps Childfund Alliance Arjowiggins Graphic, supported by paper merchant Antalis, has launched a new global collaboration for Cyclus with Un Enfant Par La Main, a member of ChildFund Alliance. The new initiative will help 420 children of the Bon Berger School in Haiti to continue their education in a safe environment. Cyclus, in collaboration with Un Enfant Par La Main, will support the effort to rebuild and re-equip the school in the southern part of the country that was devastated by Hurricane Matthew. Cyclus is inviting corporate end users, designers and printers to virtually help rebuild a school through a simple interactive online game available on www.haiti.cycluspaper.com The in-game tasks include rebuilding the playground, the walls and the rooftop of the school. By doing this, each player will be directly contributing to the school rehabilitation. Building will be completed once the game reaches 5,000 players. Customers will additionally be able to see live updates from the build site as more and more players join in. To engage printers, end users and designers in the campaign, Arjowiggins Graphic will promote the initiative through direct mail, e-shots, video, web banners and social media. A trendy limited-edition My Cyclus notepad, with geometric patterns showcasing the excellent print qualities of Cyclus, can be requested from the dedicated campaign website. The striking design has been created in colour using CyclusPrint 350gsm and CyclusOffset 90gsm. The 12-page mailer is printed on a five colour offset LED/UV zero ozone emission press with selective silk screen UV gloss varnish. Promoting the positive impact of using recycled paper, it uses Cyclus Offset 170gsm for the cover pages, Cyclus Print 115gsm and Cyclus Offset 100gsm for the text pages. *Using one tonne of Cyclus Offset 100% recycled paper instead of virgin fibre paper saves the equivalent of 1,231kg of landfill, 3,838 kWh of electricity, 28,900 litres of water, 2,000 kg of wood and 295kg CO2 and greenhouse gases. Angela De Vorchik, Operational Marketing Manager at Arjowiggins Graphic UK, says: “We’re delighted to be working with Un Enfant Par La Main again, and this time to aid the education for children in Haiti that have had more than their schooling taken from them. We hope that this gesture will not only raise awareness about their situation but also help each child on another level. Our partnership enables us and our customers to make a genuine difference. “Cyclus is rich in environmental and ethical principles, including being manufactured to the most stringent environmental certifications, therefore joining forces with Un Enfant par la Main from the ChildFund Alliance is a natural fit. For this year’s Cyclus campaign we have chosen an impactful approach as we encourage our customers to support the campaign.” The campaign is being rolled out in the UK by Antalis, a stockist of Cyclus. Mike Bennett, Marketing Manager at Antalis UK, says “We are proud to be part of a Cyclus campaign which is supporting the education of vulnerable children. The new campaign launches will run until the end of June 2018. www.cycluspaper.com • www.unenfantparlamain.org www.childfundalliance.org

Xerox partners with PrintReleaf Xerox managed print services (MPS) customers will have the opportunity to contribute to the reforestation of global forests through Xerox’s new partnership with PrintReleaf. Based on a theme of “you print one, we’ll plant one,” PrintReleaf leverages paper usage reporting and equates the number of trees needed to reforest that usage on an equivalent basis in geographic areas of need. Xerox customers around the world will be able to sign up for PrintReleaf as an add-on to a managed print services contract. Through an online portal, Xerox will help customers select the managed forestry projects where their trees will be planted, in addition to tracking and reporting on their direct reforestation impact. “From our Green World Alliance programme to the Xerox Print Awareness Tool, we have long been known for our dedication to sustainability,” said Wendi Latko, vice president, Environment, Health, Safety & Sustainability, Xerox. “With PrintReleaf, now we’re able to take that commitment one step further by empowering our MPS customers with an industry certified service that will accelerate and promote their efforts as stewards of the environment.” “Xerox’s roots in sustainability make it an ideal partner for us in our continued work towards a more sustainable planet,” said Jordan Darragh, CEO and founder, PrintReleaf. “This partnership holds great potential as we expand our network of PrintReleaf users and reach new reforestation goals.” www.printreleaf.com • www.xerox.com

PRINT FUTURE

2020 PRINT VISION

SHARE YOUR 2020 PRINT VISION

This new regular 2020 Print Vision feature is open to all for print predictions over the next couple of years. The 36,000 quick print pros that, in the front line of the print industry, are so often asked ‘What’s next in print?’

[D]

ragana Pavlovic, senior vice president of the Global Development Group for Xerox Corporation asks ‘Is the print industry using AI to its full potential?’ If you take an interest in annual industry predictions you’ll have noticed artificial intelligence (AI) top nearly every reputable 2018 list. Amidst the sensationalist claims of robots stealing human jobs and societal concerns about AI spinning out of control, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) was on hand to ground the AI conversation firmly in the present. In its 2018 AI Predictions, PwC stated that 2018 is the year that “AI will come down to earth – and get to work.” PwC predicts that in 2018 AI will finally start doing things, yet not necessarily in ways which set the world alight per certain overzealous media headlines. For AI to come down to earth, it needs to function at its most basic level and this boils down to automating processes – something the print industry has talked about for some time. With UK printers under increasing pressure to drive cost savings and remain competitive, is the industry really using AI to its full potential?

How can AI help?

The definition of AI is generally accepted to mean the ability of a machine to imitate intelligent human behaviour. Admittedly, this definition is an umbrella term for a broad spectrum of technology so the industry coined four distinctive categories of AI: 1 Reactive machines – The most basic functionality of AI where the machine can only react to current scenarios, with no ability to use experience to inform decisions. 2 Limited memory – The machine can make observations about its environment to

inform a decision i.e. the technology behind self-driving cars. 3 Theory of mind – At this point, AI becomes more futuristic. To fall into this category, AI must have the ability to understand thoughts and emotions, and use this to react to the world around it. 4 Self-aware AI – The most advanced type of AI and requires the machine to have its own consciousness, something that does not exist… yet. There may be a lot of hype and speculation around the latter two categories, but in reality it’s the AI which falls into the ‘reactive machines’ and ‘limited memory’ categories which the printing industry should care about. This AI has the potential to open up lucrative new revenue streams for print businesses by improving the effectiveness of the end-to-end printing process, from print job creation through to continuous production and machine service optimisations.

Where is the best place to start?

In theory, AI can improve any and every aspect of the print process, limited only by the amount of resource (financial, technological, employee) available to make this change. As with the introduction of any new technology into a business, it takes time to truly assess what makes the most sense for your business. You may choose, for example, to implement AI to automate tasks that were previously bottlenecks in the printing process – increasing the business’ daily output. Alternatively, you might decide to offload some of the more routine work to a machine in order to enable your team to focus on more strategic work. There are multiple examples of this in practice. For example, many printers have transformed their printing process by utilising software

with smart algorithms that can decipher different document layouts, such as optimising imposition, in order to minimise printed waste. This drives cost savings and is environmentally beneficial too. Similarly, those in the business of printing direct mail and catalogues are taking advantage of the data they have available to automatically customise the content for the recipient, creating more relevant mailings. This is a small change but one which can give you the edge over the competition. Your starting point could also be as simple as installing smart software that has the ability to monitor which presses are busy and then route new jobs to available presses on your behalf. Xerox presses such as the iGen 5 employ sensors to constantly monitor themselves and make realtime in-process adjustments for paper alignment and image quality to provide the best possible printing outcome without human intervention. From a maintenance perspective, today’s machines will also connect back to their supplier — allowing machine data to be analysed securely, compared to expected performance and then adjusted or updated remotely. In the future, this data could be used to predict the need for service before the machine fails.

What can we expect in the future?

Whilst creating real revenue in 2018 is arguably much more valuable than speculating over predicted revenue in 2028, the potential for AI to change the print industry even further is not too far away. With the rise of digital content, there is a huge opportunity to leverage online data to offer much more personalised print services in the future, such as creating customised photo books by determining a user’s favourite social media images, or synthesising targeted print catalogues or newsletters based

on what pages the shopper is looking at. But in the spirit of coming down to earth, there is also a very real opportunity in the here and now to take advantage of the available software and kit to bring the benefits of AI to your business. So what are you waiting for? Step back, look at your current processes and see where you could use this revolutionary piece of technology to unlock even greater value. www.xerox.com

MakerBot promotes the power of 3D

MakerBot and specialist distributor ArtSystems will be promoting the power of desktop 3D printing to education providers at the eagerly anticipated ICT for Education series of conferences. The conferences, applauded by audiences as enjoyable events which help teachers and schools keep abreast of the latest technological advances, will be held across the country from now until November 2018, with events in Norwich, Brighton, Newcastle, Manchester and Nottingham, the next being on the 18th May in Norwich Each event will see the MakerBot Starter Lab in action. Starter Lab is a unique solution involving multiple 3D printers – managed through a central resource – which makes it ideal for educational sites, enabling staff to manage a professional suite of MakerBot 3D printers. Ted Freer, ArtSystems’ Divisional Manager Design and a STEM Ambassador since 2017, will be presenting at the events. He explains why MakerBot and Artsystems value the conferences: “We are dedicated to the STEM initiative, an educational programme developed to prepare primary and secondary students for college and graduate study in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, or STEM. “In addition to subject-specific learning, STEM aims to foster inquiring minds, logical reasoning, and collaboration skills. In line with that concept the ICT for Education conferences create the perfect environment in which educators working at the coal face can receive expert tailored advice towards finding the perfect technological solution for their students’ needs.”

He continued: “We want to provide as many education professionals as possible with the opportunity to see MakerBot in action while offering them the freedom to ask questions in a non-pressurised environment. The ICT for Education conferences are ideal for this; we can share prime time with delegates that would not be possible during larger, more intense events.” Educating towards Industry 4.0 - Ted’s series of talks will cover the impact of Industry 4.0 on job skills and employability in the future, while also citing examples of schools successfully addressing these fundamental societal changes through STEM teaching. He concluded: “Industry 4.0 will profoundly influence change in our society, having a direct impact on our daily lives. Crucially, it will affect the way we design, develop and manufacture products, requiring a workforce with new and very different skillsets from those that exist today. “The challenge now is to develop an agile, informed education system that can prepare and inspire suitably qualified personnel to thrive in this new and highly dynamic workspace. My presentation defines Industry 4.0, and outlines steps that educators can take to prepare students for these disruptive changes.” Ted Freer is a graduate of Liverpool University with a Bachelor of Education degree, and he later gained a Diploma in Business Administration from Leeds Metropolitan University. For over 30 years Ted has worked in various project and business management roles; more latterly with ArtSystems, where he has a focused his expertise on new product development and the STEM enterprise. ICT for Education conferences are free of charge for delegates and include complimentary lunch and refreshments, for more information visit www.ictforeducation. co.uk

Incredible giant robot artwork examines link between technology and mental health Digital technology is making us all more anxious. That’s the message behind the latest perception-challenging work from Scottish artist Michael John Hunter. The work, titled ‘In the Future I won’t be Anxious’ features a sculpture of a giant toy robot, made to symbolise and represent technology, and follows Hunter’s previous works ‘Fly’ and ‘As i grow, as i lose’, both of which also used oversized sculptures and camera manipulation to challenge the viewer’s perception. Hunter said, “This work is about the role technology plays as a potential cause of anxiety

33

for all of us.” “The robot represents the promise of an amazing high-tech future. But I feel like ‘the future’ really is now, but maybe it’s not all it was promised to be and there’s a downside to all the technology that surrounds us and infiltrates almost every aspect of our lives.” Entirely self-funded, Hunter made the 17-foot sculpture over the last year. For the artist, the physicality of his sculpture and real-life London locations is also an important aspect of the work. He said: “As with the discarded robot in this work, I feel there is a need for us to put down our technological ‘toys’ and engage more with our environment, our surroundings and each other; to engage with the real.” He added: “For me, spending months handmaking this sculpture has helped reduce my own anxiety, so this work has added importance for me.” Hunter views the work as essentially a form of play. The final image and process of creation all combine to make something fun yet serious. Through hand sculpting and the use of analogue photography, traditional hands-on techniques enable him to be more present with the world. The fact the end result is something so real but appears manipulated and fake is his comment on how our modern mind operates. Hunter said, “My work is created to challenge the viewer and to make them question what they are seeing. By focusing on the impact technology can have on us and our mental wellbeing, I hope people might also start to question their own relationship with technology, so that in the future as a society we won’t be as anxious.” To find out more about the work of Michael John Hunter please visit www.michaeljohnhunter.com QPP quick print pros, serving our 8 million plus end users are in the frontline of print, please share your thoughts for the future. Turning gold, silver and mixed metallics into profits for print providers For London-based print provider IPW1, embossing, foils and embellishments are key features clients desire to create eye-catching applications. These high-end features have traditionally come with high-end prices and long turnaround times driven by the need for multiple print passes or multiple machines to produce the desired effect – until now. Today, IPW1 can offer its clients an expanded palette of metallic colours and special effects with the high-speed Xerox Iridesse™ Production Press – a six station press that combines four-colour printing with two speciality dry inks in a single printing pass. “With Iridesse, we can create remarkable and eye-catching ads, cards, and posters with a simple setup and at high speeds. It’s a clear differentiator for us and it is what our customers are looking for,” said Glen Robins, sales director, IPW1, who has been testing an Iridesse Production Press for several months. “I’ve been in the print trade for 35 years now and I’ve never known a digital machine like it.” IPW1 works with a wide variety of clients, many of whom are anxious to explore the capabilities driven by Iridesse. For the designer — Vibrant colours, high quality and intricate details are critical

components for Glazier Design — a branding, graphic and web/digital design firm in London. They can now design and print high-value jobs cost-effectively. “As designers, it broadens our horizons and there is so much more that we can offer our customers,” said Ben Glazier, CEO, Glazier Design. “The great thing about this press is that it brings previously expensive techniques into the realms of availability for everyone. The ability to lay metallic sheens over normal colours will enable us to create beautiful iridescent effects while adding a level of intensity to jobs like wedding invitations, business cards and posters.” For the creative director — London-based 48.1 is a creative agency that deals with many food, drink and restaurant brands. Until Iridesse, metallic colours and enhancements were not within reach for many of their clients. “Being able to go into much smaller restaurants and offer them creative services to print gold and silver finishes on their menus is a really lovely touch,” said Paddy Carey, creative director, 48.1. “The ability to print these types of enhancements on very small print runs is something that has never been available before.” For the marketer — Chester Barrie is a high

The ability to acquire a complete system from a single supplier makes it easier for businesses to enter the digital textile and apparel printing market, and for existing textile and apparel businesses to add digital printing to the mix to complement conventional textile printing processes. “Currently, businesses wishing to participate in the digital textile printing revolution must purchase printers and pre and post treatment solutions from different manufacturers,” said Ronald van den Broek, General Manager Sales at Mimaki Europe. “Not only is this inconvenient, but there can be implementation issues with no single source of responsibility to resolve them. Following our acquisition of Australian company Rimslow last year, Mimaki now has all the necessary components in place, including pre-treatment of fabrics, digital printing, and steaming and washing post-print with the Rimslow Series.” Mimaki also announced its first development in the Internet of Things (IoT) for Textiles and Apparel (TA), adding another layer to speed processing and to reduce errors. Named Mimaki Job Controller TA, the new development includes functions to provide production condition management, barcode scanning, and visibility into the production database. Together with Mimaki’s range of textile machines which are distributed in the UK and Ireland by Hybrid Services Ltd, these components comprise a complete digital textile printing ecosystem that makes entry into digital textile printing a virtually risk-free venture.

Mimaki Digital Textile and Apparel Ecosystem: The Details Printing textiles with digital inkjet technologies typically requires four discreet steps: • Pre-treatment of fabrics prior to printing is required to ensure optimum interaction between the ink and the fabric and to prevent ink bleeding. By using the Mimaki TR3001850C Pre-Treatment Unit, businesses can bring the pre-treatment in-house, reducing costs, shortening production cycles, and gaining increased control over the entire process. • Direct inkjet printing of textiles is accomplished using a Mimaki textile printer such as the new Tiger 1800B MkII production-class digital textile printer, also on display at FESPA. • Steaming of the printed fabric is required to

fix the ink on the fabric. This is accomplished with the Mimaki TR300-1850S or the Mimaki TR600-1850S Steamer. • In the washing step, leftover ink and treatment agent are removed from the fabric, making it ready for the next steps in manufacturing and/or distribution. The Mimaki TR600-1850W Washer is used during this step. An important factor in controlling the quality of the finished product is the ability to control the production process and ensure consistency from one run to the next. With the new development in Mimaki IoT for the TA Market, this is accomplished with three important components: • Production Condition Management, designed to record production condition data and manage production conditions that can change depending on the type of textiles, inks and final products being produced. This data can be used to ensure consistency when repeating jobs and to simplify the ability to use multiple printing units in parallel to increase printing throughput and ensure efficient workload distribution. • Production Condition Barcodes can be used

to call the production condition management data from the production database to set up a job automatically. This speeds job set-up, reduces human error, and makes it easier for less experienced operators to deliver quality printed textiles. • Visibility into the production database provides management with relevant information, including actual production numbers, production staff involved in the process, production time and failure rates, in addition to production conditions. This provides management with real-time data for better decision-making and continuous improvement efforts, including cost/profit calculations and better production planning. “With the launch of the Mimaki Digital Textile and Apparel Ecosystem, and following our joint venture with Bompan in Italy, we are working towards the realisation of bringing a Total Solutions Approach to the digital production of textiles and apparel,” van den Broek added. “We are excited to hear feedback from FESPA visitors who will have had a first opportunity to see our textile production line in action.” www.hybridservices.co.uk

Lasercut.London finds Roland LEF-12i offers more than meets the eye Lasercut.London Ltd. is a specialist in its field, having evolved from a laser cutting business to a problem solving consultancy for high end brands, offering design and manufacture of awards, furniture, automotive products and more. As such, it seeks out cutting-edge equipment to meet the specific requirements of its clients – but discovered its new Roland VersaUV LEF-12i offered far more than the one function for which it was installed. “We design bespoke, high-end products, offering the highest quality and also work with multiple clients in the USA,” explains Chris McGee, Managing Director of Lasercut.London. “We offer a fast-turnaround service for qualityfocused customers; work is completed typically in three to five days and sometimes overnight.” “More of our clients are requesting brandmatched colours which are not feasible on short runs with acrylic sheet, as we would need to order costly minimums of the material, with three-month lead times. Additionally, last year we saw a very popular trend for colour-gradient logos on awards which, again, are not possible with off the shelf acrylic sheet. The answer to meeting these requirements was a digital UV printer.”

The company went directly to Roland for a suitable printer – “They were the only people we really looked at; I’ve always respected Roland’s status within the print industry,” says Chris – and chose the Roland VersaUV LEF-12i printer for its high quality output and build, designed for a clean workplace. “It was the only machine in its class that was fully enclosed; we like things to be as clean as possible in our studio environment,” comments Chris McGee. He continues: “We bought the machine for one specific application, like many of our devices. But once it was installed and I started playing around with what it can do, I discovered many more of its functions. I love the white ink and the surface textures possible with printing layers of gloss UV ink. It brings 3D effects into traditional print.” Lasercut.London’s Instagram account (www. instagram.com/lasercut.london) showcases some of its experiments – including printing onto a pancake on Shrove Tuesday! The most compact of the LEF series, the Roland VersaUV LEF-12i prints directly onto a huge variety of materials and objects, making it an ideal printer for personalisation, prototype

designs and one-offs. Printing a bottom layer of white ink makes colours on top really pop, while the gloss ink option enables spot gloss or matt finishes and touchable embossed effects. “While it is fun, the LEF-12i is also a technical machine and our training at the Roland Creative Centre was really worthwhile,” says Lasercut. London’s MD. “I would definitely recommend other users to go on a course. The experts there steer you much quicker to what the machine can do for you than YouTube videos or the manual can. In fact, the whole experience with Roland is really great, right from the beginning.” Chris says that he is considering upgrading the LEF12i to one of its larger siblings which offer bidirectional printing for faster speeds. www.lasercut.london • www.rolanddg.co.uk

SOMETHING TO SHARE…? The Name Game

The heart specialist was operating on the patient when he suddenly said, “Don’t worry, Adam. This is a minor operation. Everything will be all right.” The patient replied, “Thank you Doctor, but my name is Andrew.” The heart specialist said, “I know that. Adam is my name.”

How Do You Feel Now?

Bill went to the chiropractor thinking that the chiropractor would not be able to treat his chronic back pain. After a few minutes, his back felt like new. The doctor asked, “How do you feel about chiropractors now,” Bill replied, “I stand corrected!”

I had to deliver some packages to an apartment block in Chinatown today. It was Wong on so many levels. What happened when a dog went to the flea circus? He stole the show! Why was Cinderella so bad at sports? Because she had a pumpkin for a coach! What’s the difference between a hippo and a zippo? One is heavy and the others a little lighter. No matter how much you push the envelope, it’ll still be stationery. I was going to change my toaster, but I thought ... “Better the Breville you know” I asked the librarian for a book about permeable rocks. “Have a look in Waterstones,” she said. I love cooking children and dogs but I hate punctuating my sentences News: ‘Man Utd player pulled from burning car’. He must have the gift of the gab with the ladies.

Be Patient

A man rushed into a busy doctor’s office and shouted, “Doctor! I think I’m shrinking!” The doctor calmly responded, “Now, settle down. You’ll just have to be a little patient.”

The Private Eye

I was sitting in my office when a case came in. So I finished two bottles from it. I was tough, so tough I wore my clothes out from the inside. Suddenly a tall blonde walked past my window. I knew she was tall because I was on the second floor. The phone rang and I knew something was wrong. I didn’t have a phone. It was a girl and she was in trouble. I knew she was, ‘cause she said so. I raced down the stairs and called a cab. The cab stopped with a jerk. Then the jerk got out and I got in. We took the corner at a hundred miles per hour, but a cop stopped us and told us to put the corner back. As we came to her house, she greeted me with a burning kiss. Then she took the cigarette out and kissed me again. She pointed two thirty-eights at me. She also had a gun. She had the most beautiful blonde hair I have ever seen — hanging from her left nostril. She had teeth like the ten commandments — all broken. She also had the most beautiful eyes — so beautiful that the one eye could not stop looking at the other one.

Travel Rewards A travel agent looked up from his desk to see an older lady and an older gentleman peering in the shop window at the posters showing the glamorous destinations around the world. The agent had had a good week and the dejected couple looking in the window gave him a feeling of generosity. He called them into his shop and said, “I have a surprise for you. I am sending you off to a fabulous resort at my expense, and I won’t take no for an answer.” He took them inside and asked his secretary to write two flight tickets and book a room in a five star hotel. They, as can be expected, gladly accepted, and were on their way. About a month later the little lady came in to his shop. “And how did you like your holiday?” he asked eagerly. “The flight was exciting and the room was lovely,” she said. “I’ve come to thank you. But, one thing puzzled me. Who was that old guy I had to share the room with?”

It Doesn’t Fit I reluctantly went shopping with my wife so she could buy a new dress. She tried on several but they didn’t fit. As she came out of the fitting room totally frustrated she remarked, “Nothing my size fits me anymore.”

I Must Find It

One of the world’s greatest scientists was also recognised as the original absent-minded professor. One day, on board a train, he was unable to find his ticket. The ticket inspector said, “Take it easy. You’ll find it.” When the ticket inspector returned, the professor still couldn’t find the ticket. The ticket inspector, recognising the famous scientist, said, “I’m sure you bought a ticket. Forget about it.” “You’re very kind,” the professor said, “but I must find it. Otherwise, I won’t know where to get off.”

Story of Four Salespeople

This is the story of four salespeople named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was asked to do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realised that Everybody wouldn’t do it. Consequently, it wound up that Nobody told Anybody, so Everybody blamed Somebody.

Three kids argue, whose father is the fastest. One says, “My father is the fastest, he can overtake an arrow he shot with a bow.” The second one says, “My father is even faster - he can shoot a gun and then run to catch the bullet before it hits anything.” The third kid says, “You actually don’t understand what speed is. My father is even quicker! He finishes work at 4:30 pm, but he’s back home by 3:45 pm almost every day.”

A man goes into a copy shop and says, “I would like ten copies of my CV please. “No problem,” comes the reply from behind the counter. “But I want it my way,” says the man. “What do you mean ‘your way’?” asks the copy shop assistant. The man says, “Well, I want the Power Point document to run into a different amount of pages than my original. To choose it’s own typeface and size. Can the columns all get shaken up and add some different colours in the text and background. “I don’t have the time to do all that!”, replies the copy shop assistant. “Well you did yesterday!” replied the customer.

Dear John

Father to Daughter

What would be nice...

I heard this week that every time you drink more than the equivalent of five pints a week you knock two years off your life. I reckon if that means when you drink more than five ‘drinks’ a day that is two years per day? Say ten years a week, 520 years lost every calendar year? How many generations of our forebears have we knocked out? Even the conservative estimate of two years per week for 40 years means we’ve lost over 200 years off our lives. Better stop now. Lager and cider doesn’t count though, that’s a dry night.
