Re-launch print
20 BUSINESS IN A BOX
Another month passes and we are still not sure what the ‘new normal’ has in store for us, other than the fact that our print shops will begin to open this month – bring it on. June should be my last month as acting editor but I have enjoyed it more than I had anticipated – I may insist on staying in the role and dusting the editor off, get him suited up, and send him out selling… we are all going to have a bit of a re-launch. I have tried to avoid the new ‘C’ word during my time as editor, but hope all our readers have kept well and safe over the last two months. Maureen

INVESTING IN A TIME OF CRISIS When people think of a keyworker, they are unlikely to visualise someone operating a printing machine in a factory. How ‘essential’ can print really be during a global pandemic? The Covid-19 pandemic has created a divide, those whose work is deemed on hold and those who are working harder than ever to serve the nation. The healthcare workers, the refuse workers, delivery drivers are all in plain sight of the public, but there are also hidden workers playing a vital role who have seen the demand for their expertise increase beyond what anyone expected. Whilst some businesses are closing in the hope of easier times to come, others are creating wider doors and embracing the new challenges. Peter Scott Printers (PSP), based in Burnley, Lancashire has invested £200K into a new £1 million factory, and completed a full factory move (now neighbours with BooHoo) whilst seeing a huge surge in demand — all in the last three weeks. Joanne Hindley, Commercial Director at PSP said: “We expected challenging times, planned to close up shop and then there was a cry for help. We have seen demand for items such as essential signposting for local authorities, social distancing signs for supermarkets, products for food chains and labels for manufacturers, mainly bakeware products as people are spending more time in the kitchen! Many businesses have diversified their offering to stay afloat or closed business, here at Peter Scott Printers we are doing more of what we have done for over 60 years — being the one stop shop for all print material locally and nationally.” To refine their operations and reduce their lead time, Peter Scott Printers engaged with experts via AMRC North West based in Preston which is part of The University of Sheffield on lean time management and streamlining production layout to ensure they are one step ahead of competitors. Nick Hall- Business Engagement Manager AMRC NW stated:
“Peter Scott Printers are a wonderful, innovative business with a great history. They identified that AMRC NW could help them look at their operation differently and through this collaboration were able to draw up new layouts and workflows. It was a pleasure being able to work with Joanne and her team delivering this assist through ERDF funding”. Peter Scott Printers has invested in new computerto-plate tech, are reducing their carbon footprint and are FSC certified as part of an initiative to have minimal environmental impact. Joanne continued: “I would encourage all businesses to look at opportunities rather than feel defeated. In these difficult times we have managed to not turn down a single job and have done everything we can to keep our workforce in jobs. We want to play a part in getting Britain moving again after this crisis is over, part of our role in that is remaining open and functioning. Those who work at Peter Scott Printers are hidden heroes. The general public are not aware of their vital work and I am sure many other businesses are in the same situation. With a workforce not ‘public facing’ it is difficult to see all the behind the scenes efforts.” Peter Scott Printers are now based at Heasandford Industrial Estate, Burnley, and are reflecting on their business journey from living room printing to large scale production. “Peter Scott set up a printing press in his living room in 1960 using demob money after serving in Egypt. They then expanded into an old dairy on Darnley Street near Burnley Football Club and in the 80s expanded further and moved to Billington Road Industrial Estate. Peter Scott Printers remained in that location until just a few weeks ago when the growth meant a move was essential. The investment of £200,000 was to implement this move, no one predicted it would be achieved during the current crisis, but the team have managed this, whilst remaining fully operational and open for business. We now have more capacity, quicker turn-around times and are looking forward to the future. If this crisis has taught us anything, it’s that print certainly is not dead.” www.peterscottprinters.com
PARAGON CUTTING FORMES STARTS NEW CHAPTER When Gateshead die cutting and print finishing specialist Paragon Cutting Formes Ltd opened its doors in 1991 it was founded on the ethos of doing whatever it could to support customer requirements. This fundamental business building block is as evident today as it was then and was the driving force behind its first step into perfect binding with investment a Horizon BQ-470 four clamp perfect binder supplied by IFS Garry Wilson, Managing Director, explains: “A local supplier that offered perfect binding unfortunately closed and we assessed how we could address that new gap in the market. We also looked at how to add that service and how it would complement our other capabilities. As for choosing the right binder to deliver the required results he says: “We have built up a strong reputation for quality and service and wanted to ensure we could continue to provide that with the new process. The Horizon system gave us that peace of mind. It is robust and ensures very high quality and consistent results. It is also very easy to set up and run which means we can confidently meet our customers’ expectations. We are very
4
pleased with it. “We chose the four clamp option because we knew the volumes would be there and with the intuitive touch screen set up we can process jobs quickly and easily. In its first couple of months it has been running very well and we have been very busy. We think it will pay for itself within two years.”
The Horizon BQ-470 four clamp perfect binder is ideally suited to mid-range soft back book production with higher production speeds, instant make readies for runs of one. It can bind up to 65mm (2.55”) thickness and offers fully automated set-up through an intuitive icon-based LCD touchscreen. www.ifsl.uk.com

MILLENNIUM CENTRE NHS GRAPHICS Premier Paper has teamed up with Semaphore Display to help say a big thank you or ‘diolch’ to the NHS with a graphic installation at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff. The Wales Millennium Centre, situated in the Cardiff Bay area of Cardiff, is the premier venue in South Wales for concerts, opera, ballet, contemporary dance, theatre, comedy and musical performances; a grand structure comprised of Welsh slate, metal, wood and glass - the perfect location for a big window graphic display, to thank the NHS for all that they do. Christian Williams, Group Operations Director at Semaphore Display (South Wales’ leading supplier of signage), wanted to show the company’s appreciation for the NHS and came up with the idea, “We discussed this with our long standing client, and decided to progress the project supporting our client with the design, production and installation of the graphics free of charge.” Williams commented, “I contacted Brad from the Premier Display Graphics team, who we have worked with for a number of years, for support with the cost of the material and he supplied free of charge.” Christian actually manufactured the job himself; he printed the graphics through a Roland TrueVis VG-640 on a Print & Cut programme. To finish, he laminated with an exterior GU370 Ultra Gloss Laminate. He went on to say “This is a very difficult and unprecedented time for everyone and we wanted to show our gratitude to the people who are risking their lives to help others. We are extremely proud to work with our long standing client, The Wales Millennium Centre. Donating a more personal, and special message to take pride of place at the entrance of their landmark building.” Premier Paper, one of the UK’s leading merchant of printable media, supported Semaphore Display by providing stocks of Rijet 100 in a gloss white finish and removable adhesive; completely free of charge. Brad West
Display Graphics Business Development Manager at Premier adds “These are unprecedented times and our NHS staff are doing an amazing job. We’re proud to be able to show our support in any way that we can.” Rijet 100 is a comprehensive selection of 100 micron, monomeric digital print vinyl available in a choice of gloss white, matt white and gloss clear finishes that are compatible with eco-solvent, solvent, latex and UV ink technologies. Rijet 100 is available from Premier Paper with various adhesive options including permanent, removable, black opaque, hi-grip, air flow and dot form. www.paper.co.uk
KAS K640 BOOKLETMAKER HELPS STAG PRINT To meet the increasing demand for short run sheet fed books, Stag Print Services in Guildford, Surrey has installed a KAS K640 hand fed bookletmaker with a squarefold in-line unit from Ashgate. This family run printing operation has succeeded over the last four decades by focusing on high quality print production and expanding its range of inhouse capabilities for commercial print and printed product packaging, all with a very fast turnaround. 40% of its work comes from trade customers based in Surrey and London who rely on Stag Print to deliver a personalised and professional service, including colour matching and press approval. Until 2018 the company was predominantly a litho printer. Litho book finishing is still outsourced to Guildford Print Finishers, a local company. “We have had a small digital machine with an in-line saddle stitcher since 2016 but short run books have not been a big part of our business. However, our latest marketing drive saw a change with a bigger demand for short run digital work, including books up to 1000 copies,” said Sushil Patel, Managing Director. Last year they purchased a new Konica digital press which greatly increased their digital offering in terms of speed and quality. “We decided to keep the booklet maker offline with this investment because we use the Konica for many other types of work, including print for packaging. “ The company investigated a number of different booklet makers. “I definitely recommend seeing the equipment in action before placing an order. We took some of our more complex jobs to test at Ashgate’s showroom.” said Sushil. He went on to explain that the simplicity of the KF640 was the real deal maker. We wanted a machine that was straight forward to operate and highly reliable. Whilst it is less automated than other booklet makers on the market it allows our operators to easily make minor adjustments for more complex jobs. It also goes without saying that as it has fewer moving parts, there is less likelihood of a breakdown. It offers one of the widest ranges of finish sizes from A6 portrait up to 320 x 320mm, which is one of its winning factors. SRA2 sheets do not require pre-trimming of the short edge on a guillotine prior to producing an A4 landscape booklet.

Stag Print’s run length range from 10 to 1000 books on a real mix of stock including coated, uncoated, 80 to 400gsm weight and pre-creased covers. Installation has been seamless, training was straight forward and Ashgate’s engineers have been very helpful. “It is still early days but the KAS K640 has already increased our productivity. It is helpful that Ashgate offer great technical support over the phone and call out when necessary,” Sushil added. “The investment has been complementary to our investment in digital print equipment. For quantities of between 500-1000 we can now produce the books digitally, which has helped free up much needed capacity on our litho press. It is also much more efficient to produce short runs on our digital press. So it is win, win all round,” he concluded. www.ashgate.co.uk

DIGITAL LABEL INVESTS IN LATEST KONICA MINOLTA Label Tec Scotland has installed the first Konica Minolta AccurioLabel 230 press in the UK to increase capacity in its digital department. Running at the company’s Airdrie facility in North Lanarkshire, the AL230 replaces another ‘UK first’ Konica Minolta label machine, the bizhub PRESS C71cf, which has been printing four colour labels for Label Tec’s customers since 2015. The label printing company has been using Konica Minolta’s technology for many years. In 2004, it brought in the first VP8020 laser colour printer; a sprocket-fed machine which offered 25 impressions per minute. Powered by a Konica Minolta print engine, this was the company’s entry into digital at a time when this technology was still very new in labels. Managing director Paul Dunne, one of Label Tec’s founding partners, explained, “We found that as soon as customers heard the word ‘digital’, they got very excited about it, but it was very much in its infancy when we moved into it. When the first dedicated label press, the bizhub PRESS C71cf, was introduced by Konica some 10 years later, Label Tec was again front of the queue and quick to invest in the new machine. The C71cf had a stable web path, which was important to us, because up until then that had been a constant problem, taking digitally printed stock and then re-registering offline on our foiling machines. “We worked closely with Konica on this project and the press produced
very nice work for us over the years,” says Paul, explaining that the cooperation continued from then on, with feedback from Label Tec help shape the development of the AccurioLabel 230. “We are very happy with the AL230, because it has everything we wanted: web guides, higher speed and even the ability to slit. And the toner works incredibly well with our foiling, which has been a nice added bonus, so it was an easy choice to invest.” The AccurioLabel 230 has been vital in keeping Label Tec’s customers supplied with labels during the COVID-19 crisis, despite a large part of the company’s 20 staff being furloughed while most others are working from home to comply with social distancing. Paul says, “The AL230 is so easy to run, and with no plates to worry about our pre-press guy can work from home and just transfer the print files via Dropbox. “We are now putting a lot of specialist jobs on the press that we wouldn’t necessarily have printed digitally before, and it is coping well with it all. The print is even resistant to alcohol – I tested some polypropylene by rubbing it with hand sanitiser and it’s bulletproof!” www.konicaminolta.co.uk/en-gb/solutions/professional-printing/labelprinting
GILMEX ORDERS THREE NEW RICOH PRO L5160 PRINTERS
Gilmex International says it has ‘dramatically increased’ its output quality and turnaround times thanks to the installation of a new Ricoh Pro L5160 printer with Latex ink in August 2019. The London company has ordered three new L5160 systems in total, with the other two printers to be installed soon. Based in Woolwich, Gilmex International is a complete print management business serving a diverse client base with wide format applications such as pull-up banners, posters and mounted boards, plus small format marketing collateral. Terry Mills, Operations Director at Gilmex International, explains that the business pushes equipment to its limits and is always keen to invest in the best new systems. This approach meant the Gilmex print room was the first in the UK to use Ricoh Latex technology and has never looked back. “We’ve been exclusively using Ricoh now for about five years,” he says. “When we were looking to invest back then we considered a range of factors, not just price, but reliability and quality of output too. However, the biggest priority was the support which has never faltered.” This longstanding relationship with Ricoh means that Gilmex International provides honest feedback. “Our workload means we push new technology to the max, so are a good road testing opportunity for Ricoh,” says Terry. “We are continually looking for ways to improve, but we also really put our printers through the wringer.” This constant evolution meant investing in three new Ricoh Pro L5160 printers: one running material for pull-up banners, one poster paper and one PVC banners - a production workflow that will save time in Gilmex’s busy and versatile print room. The first one is already installed and is being used for the production of pull-up banners; and the second and third printers are due to be installed in due course. The impact has already been felt, as Terry explains: “The new Ricoh Pro L5160 is significantly faster than our older machine, which was something I was obviously hoping for. What I didn’t expect was the noticeable difference in quality - it’s by far superior to our solvent machines.” With such high demand, Terry Mills is always looking for new ways to enhance productivity. “I look at printers the same way most people would consider a mobile phone. What was once new and shiny is always improved upon by manufacturers like Ricoh — they keep technology constantly moving on.” www.products.ricoh.co.uk/large-format

DOMINO’S NEXT GENERATION THERMAL INKJET PRINTERS Domino Printing Sciences (Domino) is launching the Gx-Series, a new range of high quality thermal inkjet (TIJ) printers optimised for fast, efficient, and accurate coding, on product labels, flexible films, and cartons. Versatile and easy to operate, Gx-Series printers are equipped to meet the needs of an evolving global marketplace characterised by rapid changes in production schedules and fluctuations in consumer demand. “Today, more than ever, manufacturers need to be equipped to handle last minute changes to production schedules, including quick product changeovers, in order to satisfy demand,” says Alexandros Mountis, TIJ Product Manager at Domino. “The Gx-Series has been designed with this level of agility in mind – to help manufacturers keep pace with the pressures of a modern marketplace.” “Currently, key industries including food, beverage and pharmaceuticals are struggling with unprecedented levels of demand owing to the coronavirus pandemic,” continues Mountis. “This demand is especially difficult to address while adhering to government advice on social distancing and coping with a reduction in staff numbers.” “This a prime example of the challenges that we strive to help manufacturers overcome,” says Mountis. “With the Gx-Series, we have designed a printer that is versatile, and easy to adapt to changing production schedules, which also provides a solution for remote monitoring and control, allowing production and engineering to focus on value-add projects.” Domino developed the Gx-Series in consultation with customers across the globe, to ensure a solution that meets the needs of manufacturers now and in the future. The next generation printers are compatible with all languages and
suitable for use across industries including pharmaceuticals, electronics, food and beverage, with customisable options available to suit individual production needs. The Gx-Series is optimised for smart factory applications, providing manufacturers with a seamless, future proof solution for evolving production processes. Gx-Series printers are easy to use and to integrate into existing manufacturing procedures, with enhanced connectivity, a simple user interface and a smaller overall footprint. Domino Cloud capability provides remote monitoring, while options for EtherCAT and PLC communications allow for fast data transfer and synchronisation. “The Gx-Series utilises industry standards, which allows for integration into existing automation systems to provide a truly industry-4.0-ready coding and marking solution,” says Mountis. “The option of EtherCAT communication allows our TIJ printers to communicate directly with programmable logic controllers to provide greater control of manufacturing processes, translating into increased productivity, and reduced coding errors.”
Domino’s Gx-Series printers are an ideal choice for printing high density machine readable codes, including Data Matrix codes, providing opportunities for enhanced product labelling and late stage customisation within manufacturing operations. Advanced track trace and item level serialisation are available via Dynamark protocol, with coding in compliance with pharmaceutical regulations, including EU FMD and US DQSA, according to GS1 standards. Gx-Series printers are characterised by their ease of use. They are controlled via a modern, intuitive user interface and touch screen or remotely via web browser. Customers can select from one to four print heads, which can be stitched together to allow for print heights of up to 50.8mm, or used separately to print on multiple lines at speeds of up to 300m/min. The maintenance free print heads are equipped with LED status signals to show which cartridges need changing, while Domino AutoSwap enables cartridges to be changed while printing, without interrupting production. Gx-Series print heads are available with a range of advanced coloured inks suitable for use on both porous and non-porous substrates to create long lasting, high contrast alphanumeric text, graphics, human and machine readable codes. RENZ PROTECTIVE FACE SHIELD Renz Gmbh has put its technical know how and production expertise to good use to supply DIN EN 166 certified Protective Face Shields to aid containment of the Coronavirus as employers prepare to bring employees back into the workplace Initially, the Protective Face Shield was supplied extensively into the health sector. However, more recently, significant sales have been made into manufacturing, production and construction where staff necessarily work in close proximity with each other. The company has also seen considerable sales into patient and customer facing environments such as surgeries, care homes, retail, bakeries, hairdressing, beauticians etc. as employees begin to come back to work and the economy gradually opens up. Importantly, the Protective Face Shield provides both the wearer and anyone in close proximity protection from air borne fluid droplets and prevents the wearer inadvertently touching their face. Worn in conjunction with a surgical mask, (which can be changed without removing the face shield) the Protective Face Shield provides the best possible protection. The Protective Face Shield is high quality, hard wearing and lightweight. With 15mm thick forehead padding it is easy and comfortable to wear. It covers the face area (eyes, nose and mouth) extensively. The high optical quality material used to manufacture the shield is nonreflective and does not fog up. The head band is easily adjustable for a perfect fit. It also sits well under a hard hat for use in the construction industry. Importantly the shield is held far enough away from the face for glasses to be worn.
12
Chr. Renz GmbH, a medium sized company from Heubach, Germany that normally specialises in manufacturing punching, binding and laminating systems, quickly set up several production lines to manufacture Protective Face Shields and within two weeks the product was officially certified to DIN EN 166. The efficient injection moulding process used in conjunction with multi-shift working has enabled Renz to manufacture in high volumes, keeping ahead of demand and with stock being available for immediate delivery. “With our know how, our access to suitable materials, good cooperation with various local companies and the support of flexible employees, we are able to make our contribution to help
contain the corona virus”, reports Raphael Barth, Managing Director of Chr. Renz GmbH. Michael Schubert, Managing Director Sales and Marketing adds, “This begins to broaden our position as we are now supplying into a completely new business field. We have plans to introduce more personal protection products to the market, products that will help protect against the spread of bacteria or viral disease.” The development of a website for this new product range is also in progress with the products of this newly developed division being offered under the umbrella of “Renz Protective Equipment”. www.renz.co.uk

20 YEARS AGO: DIGITAL CAMERAS
As Martin Christie is still on furlough, we thought it might be interesting to revisit his very first columns for then Copy Shop News from February and March 2000 — twenty years ago when digital cameras were still a novelty, and we still had a variety of shops in the High Street. How things have changed…but some of the issues are still very familiar!
O
FEBRUARY 2000
K, so why should a copy shop get involved in digital photography? Surely that’s for the specialist high street photographic retailers? If you don’t know the obvious answer to that then you’re already missing out on business and likely to miss the boat on developments to come. The point is that you don’t have to know that much about the cameras but you do have to get up to speed on the medium they use. Just as we’ve had to learn our way around the floppy disk, the ZIP and the CD, now comes the Smart Card and the Compact Flash. The names may have been changed to confuse the innocent, but the concept is familiar — the storage of lots of information inside small bits of plastic. What’s new is the huge amount of storage available in a small space because of compression. Cameras need all that room in the cupboard because there is so much information in a photograph. That’s why the average happy snapper now has more memory than the rocket that took Neil Armstrong to the moon. This is great for all those budding David Baileys who can now take hundreds of pictures in one take instead of having to trot to the chemists with his one roll of 24. The problem comes when the camera is full and our lens person wants to do something with the images. In order to reuse the camera, it has to be emptied of that memory, and the photos either ditched or stored. This is where it gets interesting, so listen up. Most cameras come with a lead that can be plugged directly into a home PC for downloading, together with a basic software driver for reading the photos. This is very slow, limiting, and therefore prone to problems from impatient operators. The photos also take up huge chunks of memory, which may burst the sides of many domestic setups or cause M25-style tailbacks in the desktop. The enthusiastic amateur photographer, previously used to spending hours in the darkroom retouching his priceless archives, may not mind growing old in front of a computer screen, but others with a bit more of a life to lead will demand a more efficient alternative. This is where your friendly, helpful counter 14

comes in. Regardless of the make and model of the camera, the memory is stored in some form of removable card. If this can be read, it can be swiped clean quickly and popped back in the camera for fresh action. Connected to a monitor, the pictures can be viewed or directly saved and written onto CD. When displayed, original photos can be edited with simple programs to crop, enlarge and alter colour balance, brightness etc. This is the sort of instant print service that should be front of counter for general customers to take advantage of. As digital cameras become cheaper, and as a result more popular, demand for a service centre is set to snowball.
Photographic outlets are much more geared to the enthusiast who will spend hours manipulating his special effects to get that one print off his painfully slow and thirsty inkjet printer. The more average digital camera owner will want instant results, just like using the one-hour photo service centre. They don’t have to sell cameras and lenses to be an essential part of the sales chain. Their no-frills approach was exactly right for the times, and prompted by the advances in machine developing of film and prints that could be mastered by the ordinary operator with some basic training. The high street one-hour photo shop should be a good example to copy shops of how much potential business is out there. The digital camera boom is beginning. The photo shops are only just getting abreast of the APS system (An early attempt to record digital information with conventional film). Their machines are geared to working with negatives and will not know what to do with a Smart Card, let alone have the equipment to deal with it. That’s where copy shops have such a head start. You’ve been dealing with the technology for years. Some of the hardware and the names may be different, but the principles, and of course the potential problems, are familiar. Welcome the customer with a digital camera card as you did the one with the floppy disk, and the zip, and the CD. Can you afford to turn JUNE 2020 • QUICK PRINT PRO
PIXEL PROPHET them away? We’re going to be running a basic monthly feature in CSN, based on our first year living and working with the digital photography revolution. It’s intended to be basic, and will be because I started as a complete novice barely able to switch a computer on. It’s also intended to be a help to the shop counter, pointing the easiest and most cost effective ways of servicing potential customers. To do more, we’d have to turn the whole magazine over to digital photography and still not have enough room. That’s covered well by a number of glossy publications at your local newsagent. Don’t be afraid, they’re not written by nerds. They are fully illustrated with helpful guides to the hardware, the software, and the incomprehensible language. They have a refreshing novelty about them because the whole subject is new and they have to explain from the ground floor up. Invest about three pounds and you can acquire the excellent and just relaunched Digital Photo User, or IPC magazine’s What Digital Camera. Also mentioned in dispatches should be EMAP’s Digital Photo FX. They all snuggle together on the shelves every month, and if you have to choose see what CD is stuck to the cover. You’ll probably find all you’ll ever need for shop front photo editing given away free with a current issue. Usually it’s a now ‘outdated’ piece of software which will still have a thousand more applications than you’ll actually need, or be able to fathom out. Leave the complicated artwork to the palefaced boys and girls in the backroom. For front of store you just need a basic cut, copy, add a bit of paste. Don’t panic, we’ll do our best to guide you into the sales potential of this brave new world. See you next month.
MARCH 2000
The story so far. In the last issue we introduced you to the idea of copy shops stepping into the so far untapped market for photo prints from digital cameras. These cameras are rapidly filling the shelves in popular high street photographic outlets, like Jessops and Dixons, but are also available in computer shops linked with PC and printer packages so they will become more common. Customers will be coming to your counters with photos taken by these cameras, whether you encourage them or not. Why not spread out the welcome mat and open up a very profitable sales opportunity? At the moment digicam users have little choice but to use their own PC to view pictures and home InkJet printers for hard copies. That’s
assuming they have one, or want one. That’s a big assumption that the digital industry is making at the moment. They say that there are 10 million PCs in homes in the UK, and that 90% of them have inkjet printers. That still leaves 30 million plus homes without one, and doesn’t allow for that fact that even those that do are more likely to be used up with little Johnny’s homework, Tracy chatting to friends in Alaska, and mum doing the shopping. Downloading, sorting and printing digiphotos is not the work of a few moments. People who take photos want their pictures back quickly. That’s why the one-hour photo booths sprang up. Now people expect that sort of service. But at the moment they can’t get it. One or two specialist outlets like Jessops have started a service but there’s going to be a big gap between demand and supply which very quickly copy shops can slide in to. Making digital picture printing easy will help boost the sales of the cameras — something the distributors in this country are very slow to pick up on. One in four homes may have a computer but four out of four will have at least one camera. The great thing about a camera using digital memory is that you can take one or more pictures out at any time. With normal film you have to use up the whole film to make it worthwhile processing. An ordinary film may be in a camera for months on average, and then can run out just when you need it. With a digicam you can empty its memory and go off on holiday with a hundred or more picture files. Most new cameras have an ability to edit and delete built in so you only save the ones you
want. Images are transferred directly with no loss of quality through scanning so even basic cameras will produce good quality results which can be instantly transferred onto documents, cvs, menus, postcards — all those things you deal with normally anyway. Once the digital image potential is fully realised they will become the universal instant camera. They will become so cheap and convenient there will be no point in using normal film. What will make them convenient is copy shops having the facility to print their pictures — instantly at a premium, or four or twenty-four hours as a service. When that happens, the manufacturers will realise that they can sell digital cameras to people who don’t have PCs, or more importantly, the time to waste sitting at them.
TO THE CURRENT DAY
So, two decades on the mobile device has replaced the desktop computer and the camera as the universal means of transferring information and images between people and businesses. But the issue for the print shop is remarkably similar — transferring that technology into hard copy in the real world for customers who have no understanding of the complications that may be involved. Digital imaging changed the nature of traditional photography, just as now the manufacturers are claiming their phones will do the same to digital cameras. But although it has become increasingly simple to capture an image and even manipulate it so it looks amazing on an artificial screen, printing is still a challenge because it tests the real authenticity of a picture, not the electronic illusion.
What will make them convenient is copy shops having the facility to print their pictures — instantly at a premium, or four or twenty-four hours as a service. QUICK PRINT PRO • JUNE 2020

TOKYO 2021
PEAK UK GOING FOR GOLD
Pete Astles from Peak UK, winner of the Roland Hero contest, is having to revise his plans due to the wholly necessary postponement of the Tokyo Olympics. Thankfully, with the support of Roland dye sublimation technology, he will be working hard to prepare for the Games in 2021.
H
eld over the winter of 2018-19, the Roland Hero awards recognised members of the Roland community, telling their stories and inspiring others to make a change through their technology. The overall winner was Pete Astles, Director of Peak UK, who had designed pioneering new gear used by the world’s best canoe slalom athletes during the 2016 Olympic Games. Printed with Roland Texart dye sublimation technology, the Racer ST helped win gold and silver medals. Since then, Peak UK has refined its design to create the Racer ST 2020 while promoting its products to teams around the world. However, the project has been put on hold by the coronavirus outbreak. Pete explains: “Before the government announced the lockdown, we were still trying to meet deadlines, while athletes were keen to continue to train. We will continue the project as soon as we can safely return to work. “We have updated our ground breaking Racer ST product to achieve the next level again in terms of weight and performance,” he says. “In 2016 we worked exclusively with Team GB but this time the Racer ST 2020 will be available to all athletes from all nations. We expect to see twelve teams wearing it in Tokyo – we want to come back with umpteen medals.” Peak UK, based in the heart of the Derbyshire Dales, has its own print room for the addition of logos, names and flags to its products. At the end of 2019 it was updated with a Roland Texart XT-640, a next generation dytie sublimaon printer designed for high volume sportswear and other fabric applications. It produces crisp, durable prints in hundreds of eye-catching colours including fluorescent pink and yellow. “We update our equipment every Olympic cycle and installed our Texart RT-640 in 2016,” says Pete. “The RT-640 never missed a line, never gave a bad print – in fact gave us incredible quality results. We wanted to speed things up for the next Olympics, so we purchased the Texart XT-640. Thanks to its dual print heads the XT-640 is double the speed. Roland Texart just keeps getting better and better while delivering the reliability we need.” For being recognised as the overall Roland Hero, Pete Astles and his family won a trip to Thailand, courtesy of Roland DG. Luckily, 16
they travelled in February 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic forced governments to place restrictions on international travel. Pete’s children, aged four and six, enjoyed wearing ‘Mini Hero’ T-shirts and using personalised drinks bottles and luggage tags, printed for them by the Roland team.
“We had an amazing time in Koh Samui,” says Pete. “It’s a beautiful place and the whole holiday was brilliant.” As for the near future, Pete says: “Our Texart printers are currently hibernating, with the power on of course! Like many other businesses we are locked down, paused for the next few weeks, and eagerly waiting for the all-clear flag signalling it’s time to get out on the water again.” www.rolanddg.co.uk

19 Artists versus COVID-19 is a limited edition poster project by Italian paper manufacturer Fedrigoni, printed by PUSH London, in collaboration with 19 artists, to show support in the fight against COVID-19.
he project was proposed and organised by Álvaro López, a London based Spanish graphic designer and one of the 19 artists. The initiative aims to raise funds for NHS Charities Together, a federation of 250 charitable organisations who support the National Health Service, its staff, volunteers and patients, in the United Kingdom. The project features an international collective, including Alan Kitching, Pablo Amargo, Noma Bar, Sarah Boris, Michael Curia, Nick Cook, Piero Di Biase, Mario Eskenazi, Vince Frost, Götz Gramlich, Michael

Gibb, Henrik Kubel, Nina Jua Klein, Álvaro López, Rob Lowe, Morag Myerscough, Shweta Malhotra, Alejandro Paul, and Matt Willey. Each creative was asked to design an A1
poster based around the current global pandemic, interpreting the message ‘Stay Home’ and social distancing. This universal slogan has been an important message during these unprecedented times, and has been vital at slowing down the rate of infections across the world. Álvaro López, who issued the brief, says “Every day I hear the news and I’m in awe of the bravery and dedication of key workers. I was at home, in furlough, and I felt the need to somehow help. I believe being at home can give you a different perspective on how to think and it can be genuinely inspiring. Tough times

are always a source of creativeness, it’s in our human nature.” The posters were printed one sided lithographically on a Heidelberg Speedmaster by PUSH London. The designs used up to four Pantone colours and are a limited edition of 75 copies per design. Each poster was embossed with the Fedrigoni shield and hand numbered. The choice of paper was based around the Fedrigoni Plus collection, stocked in the UK and available for next day delivery. Although the message was constant, the design results were varied. and Mario Eskenazi. A few were influenced by medicine and the charity the project supports, such as Álvaro López, Götz Gramlich, Shweta Malhotra, and Noma Bar. Others were architecturally themed and inspired by the artists’ homes, like Sarah Boris, Pablo Amargo, Michael Curia, Nina Jua Klein, Henrik Kubel, Matt Willey and Rob Lowe. Each poster is unique and they convey the range of emotions that come with this situation, from the loneliness of self-isolating, the frustration of social distancing, the security of our homes, the struggle of daily routines, but also showing an appreciation for keyworkers, a positive outlook on our future and the hope of overcoming this pandemic. Most of all, it shows how we come
together as a community. The posters are being sold online at www.19vs19.co.uk for £19 (including VAT, excluding postage), with all profits going directly to NHS Charities Together. The first edition of each poster will be sold by auction at a later date. Once the lockdown is lifted and offices reopen, all 19 posters will also be exhibited in the Fedrigoni London Studio in Clerkenwell. In addition to Fedrigoni UK and PUSH London, the 19 artists would like to thank Premier Paper and UPS for supporting this project. Stay Home, Stay Safe. www.fedrigoni.co.uk • www.push-print.com

WORKING FROM HOME
GET CREATING WITH YPS
BUSINESS IN A BOX
Working from home is a reality that is fast becoming the new normal. Your Print Specialists (YPS) has launched the ‘Business in a Box’ to help people set up a complete business that can operate from home.
T
he start up package consists of an Epson SureColour SC-F500 digital inkjet printer, a PixMax heatpress, a Singer heavy duty sewing machine and a starter kit of thread, transfer paper and inks. Georgia Brown, Sales Director for YPS, says, “For creatives and entrepreneurs, getting products and ideas to market can be restricted by costs, space, skills and, sometimes, financial barriers. This is before you even think about getting your dream of working for yourself off the ground. Our ‘Business in a Box’ provides the opportunity to bring your ideas to life affordably, with a small footprint and with no specialised skill requirements.” “The ‘Business in a Box’ bundles were to be launched alongside the Your Print Institute hubs that were due to open initially in Newcastle, Manchester and London,” she adds. “While these openings are on hold until the outbreak of Covid-19 is under control, the concept of a cost-effective complete solution for a home printing business is potentially a source of hope for people looking to develop a new source of income.” Anthony Devine from the Ministry of Upholstery, is one the Your Print Institute’s Ambassadors and he says, “Technology like the Epson SC-F500 simply did not exist when I first started my career over 25 years ago. Having technology with this level of quality and capability in your home is amazing. It present unprecedented opportunities to run a successful start-up business from your kitchen table, spare bedroom or garage and rivals any professional printer in quality. It is incredibly
easy to use and beats other printers on delivery lead times and above all, on costs.” Turning Unique Art into Business - Alison Murray has recently purchased an Epson SureColour SC-F500 from YPS in order to support a hobby that is fast becoming a homebased business. Based in Central Scotland, where she has a dog-boarding company, Alison Murray took up photography as a hobby and her interest in it has flourished. More recently, she has focused on a more unusual form of her art. “I am now taking photographs of smoke
and then using Photoshop to create unique, colourful images based on the patterns. It is something that I really liked doing and it seems that many others love the images it creates.” To turn this into a potential on-line giftware business, Alison investigated her options for printing onto various products, from canvas and metal, to cushions, mugs and coasters. “I received a lot of excellent help, advice and encouragement from YPS and I have to say the Epson printer is perfect for me. It is very easy to use and the colours are incredible. I am still in the early stages of using the printer, but I am really looking forward to taking advantage of all the options it gives me.” Georgia Brown continues, “The ‘Business in a Box’ is a complete solution that allows people to run a business at home with no added overheads or unnecessary outsourcing. WFH can become a reality and the textile market is in fast growth, especially for personalised products, including home décor, clothing, promotional goods, crafting and giftware to name a few. We also encourage people to join a range of training courses and receive industry standard business advice from experience professionals.” She concludes, “Although our Print Institute Hubs are not available to visit, our Ambassadors and other experts are available to help with all aspects of setting up and running your new print business. www.yourprintspecialists.co.uk

VIRTUAL ESKOWORLD EVENT SUCCESS T
he first Virtual EskoWorld has been a huge success, with more than 3,500 delegates from across the print and packaging industry and all around the world taking part in a programme of webinars and discussion sessions held by the global supplier of integrated hardware and software solutions. For the two weeks from 27 April, Esko delivered its annual premier technology focused EskoWorld event through a total of 20 dedicated online sessions for brands and their packaging supply chain partners. Either through attending ‘live’ or downloading sessions, delegates discovered the latest innovations in packaging and label artwork management, prepress workflow automation and digitisation. Brand owners were able to network at live drop-in sessions throughout half day online conferences, where they heard stories from brands who use Esko products in addition to training and product insights from the Esko team. “This is the first time we have taken EskoWorld online and we are absolutely thrilled with the results,” said Melissa Plemen, Esko Sr. Director of Inside Sales and Marketing. “Across the ten days, we delivered a version of the same content we had planned for our eagerly anticipated live event, with experts hosting a range of exciting educational workshops and interactive learning opportunities.” The annual EskoWorld event, originally scheduled in Dallas, was one of the many industry expos cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “As the industry navigates this difficult time, we wanted to give as many of our valued partners and customers as possible the opportunity to benefit from the huge programme of activity we had prepared,” said Melissa. “Taking this year’s EskoWorld online was a logical solution, particularly with our current focus on digital transformation and the recent launch of our Digital Maturity Model for Packaging Suppliers, ensuring users experienced how the entire Esko technology ecosystem operates, as well as gaining a deeper understanding of how to benefit from digitisation.” The virtual event was free to attend and offered insights into the latest best practice techniques, as well as exploring the future of packaging production workflow. A total of 3,581 delegates attended dedicated sessions ‘live’, with topics ranging from colour management, crystal screening for flexible packaging and the latest innovations in trapping, through to the latest in structural design tools, optimising corrugated production and emulation proofing for digital presses.
“We were thrilled with the uptake from across the industry, with nearly 10,000 registrations across the sessions,” said Melissa. “As well as the thousands of delegates who took part in the sessions live, we have had thousands more downloading the replays around the globe,” said Melissa. “With EskoWorld being an interactive platform for users it was heartening to receive so many hundreds of questions throughout the interactive sessions, which our experts ensured they addressed, and the feedback from delegates has been incredibly positive. “We’re delighted our inaugural Virtual EskoWorld was so well received,” added Melissa. “We are looking forward to building on this success as we continue to work closely with our customers and guiding them on their own digital transformation journeys.” www.esko.com
ARTSYSTEMS’ WIDE OPEN PRINT FORUM MOVES ONLINE Given the increasing impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on trade shows and events, plus the updated advice from Government recommending social distancing, ArtSystems has announced a change in proceedings for its Wide Open Print Forum. The Décor event, which was due to take place on 8th April at London Bridge, will now be replaced with a series of live webinars exploring the core content due to be delivered. Russell Harpham, Sales & Marketing Director at ArtSystems, explains: “We could see that in the current climate it was simply not practical or recommended to continue with the planned event. However, we still have valuable content prepared and ready to share - this is clearly a sector of
22
keen interest. Supported by BPIF and LFR, and in collaboration with our key speakers from HP, and Dimense, we have created a series of webinars which will provide access to the same knowledge and information in a safe and easily accessible way.” In the first webinar, ArtSystems will not only
showcase lucrative business opportunities arising from décor application but will also address ways to break down the barriers facing print providers who wish to enter or expand their presence in the décor sector. The next webinar will focus on wall covering and décor media substrates enabled with ColorPRO Technology. Maria Jesus Perez, Large Format Media Marketing Product Manager and Ivan Cruz, Partner Marketing Manager, both from HP Media Supplies and Solutions will elaborate on the market they service and the solutions they provide. There will also be a full Q&A session at the end of the webinar for attendees to gain further insight. www.artsystems.co.uk

DRUPA TRENDS
ADAPTING TO A CHALLENGING MARKET This year’s drupa Spotlight report, Strategic choices in a competitive and converging marketplace.
P
ackaging and Functional market sectors are better placed than Publishing and Commercial. North America remains buoyant but confidence has slipped in Europe and across all other regions. Developing regions are held back by concerns about political instability and corruption, while developed regions are nervous of an inevitable cyclical economic downturn. There is constant pressure on margins but increasingly the better companies counter this by continual innovation. Investment plans remain strong, as printers and suppliers all recognise the need to remain competitive. In the survey (conducted before the coronavirus outbreak) over 500 printers and almost 200 suppliers described the challenges and successes of launching new products and services. For many in the industry, planning their recovery from the coronavirus recession may well necessitate such launches, so lessons must be drawn on how best to do so. In most market sectors and most regions there are very challenging conditions. As for suppliers, they are only as healthy as their customers and they too must respond to the declining prospects for traditional products and services. For many the answer must be, at least in part, to launch new products and services. “Commodity printing is overtraded, move away from commodity printing or close your doors.” Commercial printer, South Africa. Roughly 60% of printers launched major new products or services in the last four years into their existing markets. About half the launches were successful and very few went badly wrong. Diversifying the range of products/services and gaining new customers were chosen as the top benefits. As for the drawbacks, most reported that the launches sucked in far too much staff time and other resources and often ran well behind schedule. About 30% of printers had launched into new market sectors. This is clearly a more difficult challenge and the results reflected that, with c.40% of the launches going well (compared with 54% for existing markets). Turning to suppliers, approximately 80% launched new products/services over the last four years. The results were clearly better the larger the company with a success rate of 40% for the smallest suppliers up to 80% for the largest. The top benefits were diversification and gaining new customers. The biggest problems by far were launches running late and 24

sucking in too many resources, while building the correct channels to market was a common challenge. Before the coronavirus outbreak, 76% of printers and 85% of suppliers were either definitely or possibly launching new products or services in the next four years. Clearly that will mean investment, with digital print technology followed by finishing being the most popular targets for printers. The report will draw four key lessons on how best to succeed when launching new products or services: • Launching new services and products needs proper well-prepared processes • Careful selection and development is essential – no knee-jerk reactions • Plan conservatively – expect delays and complications • Manage your expectations – be realistic These two quotes from panel participants
underline them: “The most important lesson has been to define plans with the ability to adapt to rapid changes in market and customers’ demands. The challenge is to grow by introducing new product or services areas while maintaining the existing ones.” Packaging printer, Puerto Rico. “The switch from print to print + digital is essential for the survival of the graphic industries. Customers are no longer waiting. If you cannot provide the service they request, they will leave you, because a competitor, who has been able to adapt and develop new services, will take the market.” www.drupa.com

PAPER-BASED PACKAGING SURVEY Results of a new European survey reveal that paper based packaging is favoured for being better for the environment, as consumers become increasingly conscious of their packaging choices. The survey of 5,900 European consumers, conducted by industry campaign Two Sides and independent research company Toluna, sought to understand consumer preferences, perceptions, and attitudes towards packaging. Respondents were asked to choose their preferred packaging material (paper/cardboard, glass, metal, and plastic) based on 15 environmental, practical, and visual attributes. Among the 10 attributes paper/cardboard packaging is preferred for, 63% of consumers choose it for being better for the environment, 57% because it is easier to recycle and 72% prefer paper/cardboard because it is home compostable. Glass packaging is the preferred choice of consumers for giving better protection of products (51%), as well as being reusable (55%) and 41% prefer the look and feel of glass. Jonathan Tame, Managing Director of Two Sides, states, “Packaging was placed firmly on the agenda for consumers after thought provoking documentaries, such as David Attenborough’s Blue Planet 2, which demonstrated the impact our waste is having on the natural environment. Our survey shows consumers around Europe recognise paper based packaging’s environmental qualities, but some areas remain misunderstood, particularly paper’s high recycling rate.” Consumer attitudes towards plastic packaging are clear, with 70% of respondents stating that they are actively taking steps to reduce their use of plastic packaging. Plastic packaging is also accurately perceived to be the least recycled material, with 63% of consumers believing it to have a recycling rate of less than 40% (42% of plastic packaging is recycled in Europe). Paper/cardboard packaging is considered to be the most recycled material, with 30% believing the European recycling rate to be over 60%. With an actual recycling rate of 85%, there is still a significant number of consumers who underestimate paper/cardboard packaging’s high recycling rate. Glass is considered the second most recycled packaging material, followed by metal. With actual recycling rates of 74% and 80% respectively, the recyclability of these packaging materials is also widely misunderstood by consumers. The survey found that consumers throughout Europe are willing to change their behaviour to shop more sustainably. 44% are willing to spend more on products if packaged in sustainable materials and nearly half (48%) would consider avoiding a retailer if they believe that retailer is not doing enough to reduce its use of non-recyclable packaging. Jonathan continues, “Consumers are becoming more aware of the

The culture of ‘make, use, dispose’ is slowly changing.” The wide-reaching survey also explored consumer perceptions of retailers’ efforts to reduce use of non-recyclable packaging, awareness of forest certification and environmental labels, and shopping bag material preferences. SIGN, KEEP AND PLANT YOUR PENCIL Sprout had an interesting request from one of their customers recently – a health clinic that’s planning their reopening after having been on lockdown. Amongst the many new hygiene standards to fulfil, they had to find a solution for the registration process where clients needed to fill out and sign paperwork. A plastic pen to share between patients was not relevant anymore – not only due to hygienic reasons, but also due to the fact that plastic doesn’t represent the values of being a healthy, eco-friendly clinic. So, what did they do? They ordered sharpened Sprout pencils with their logo to hand out to each patient as a fill out, sign and keep pencil. Also their biodegradable Sprout Spoons with tea are getting more and more popular. A customised version gives companies the opportunity to let partners, clients, or employees enjoy a tasty cup of tea while thinking good thoughts about your brand. www.sproutworld.com

Currently there appears to be a vast range of options, materials and styles together with various claims relating to specification and personal safety. Without going into the science, it is agreed that having some form of face covering makes sense. We have witnessed during the lockdown a host of online videos and clips of many creative people making masks from socks, pants, bras and a host of other household items! EPSON ENHANCES ENTRY LEVEL LARGE FORMAT PLOTTERS
Epson announces the launch of three enhanced professional plotters to its SureColor large format technical printer range. The enhanced features have been introduced after listening carefully to customer feedback. The SureColor SC-T3405N and the SC-T3405, both 24-inch (A1) printers, one for a desktop and the other with a stand; and the SureColor SC-T5405, a 36-inch (A0) floor-standing printer. The new models extend Epson’s range of technical printers for professional service providers and are ideal for printing high quality CAD designs, architectural or engineering technical drawings, general office documents, high-visibility posters for event organisers or Point-ofPurchase (POP) signage for retailers. Tom Owers, Pro Graphics product manager, Epson UK, explains: “We listen carefully to our customers and market research feedback, this has enabled us to identify ways to support them better. If your customers are engineers or architects, or you need to print topography plans, city management or territory scale studies, and need to print accurately, reliably and in fine detail then these printers are designed precisely to meet your needs.” “The new printers are also perfect for producing high quality posters, whether for schools, for retailers’ in-store signage or for high visibility colourful posters advertising events.” Building on Epson’s PrecisionCore printhead technology, which is designed to last the lifetime of the machine, the new stylish printers allow users to print wirelessly from tablets and smartphones and also from other printers. Offering improved and lower total cost of ownership (TCO), the printers will fit seamlessly into busy professional working environments and are designed to protect prints from harmful dust and dirt. NEW PROFIT CENTRE
DIGITALLY PRINTED STAND-UP POUCHES BakPac is a new trade digital flexible packaging manufacturer, launched at the start of 2020 by Baker Labels following a £2.5m investment in equipment and factory renovations. They have over 45 years of printing experience and have built a strong reputation as a trusted trade supplier to the label printing industry. Their intention with BakPac is to not only extend this reputation into the flexible packaging industry but to extend what they are able to offer to their current label printing customers. They have produced comprehensive sample packs of unbranded stand-up pouches that emphasise the diversity in the markets that flexible packaging is used in. Using a selection of base materials in silver (METPET/PE)*, white (PET/EEVOHWHITE)* and clear (PET/EEVOH – CLEAR)* and various thermally laminated finishes including softtouch, matt, gloss, linen and leather, the digitally printed pouches are designed to emphasise their capability and quality, both to reassure conventional packaging producers and inspire label manufacturers with what they could offer. *Key: BOPP: Biaxially Orientated Polypropylene; PET, Polyester; MET PET, Metallized Polyester; PE, Polyethylene; EVOH, Ethylene-vinyl Alcohol (Barrier layer). All sample pouches were printed on an HP Indigo 20000 digital press before being thermally
laminated on their Enprom Thermal Laminator then converted on the Karville KS-DSUP-400GSW Pouchmaker. Although all the samples in the pack are the same size they can produce stand up pouches and pillow pouches in a wide variety of sizes. Options such as zippers, tear notches and euro slots are available of course plus they have some added extras available to customers such as multiweb pouches so different materials and finishes can be used on the face, reverse and gusset. Why have BakPac as a trade supplier of digitally printed flexible packaging? Digitally printed flexible packaging may only represent a tiny percentage of the flexible packaging market but in the growing digital climate, it is likely to increase. As a trade supplier they can help ensure conventional flexible packaging manufacturers
don’t miss the opportunity to maximise profits on all enquiries from customers looking for the advantages of digitally printed flexible packaging such as reduced waste and low MOQs. The attraction of short runs and variability that digital flexible packaging offers is perfect for seasonal specials, trials and many small to medium businesses. By working with BakPac, customers that are currently printing conventionally can offer this to their customers instead of them moving to another supplier. The cost threshold of digital v traditional is decreasing so BakPac will not be suitable for end users requiring higher quantities but while they’re growing BakPac is perfectly positioned to allow conventional manufacturers what they need. When they scale up they’ll be able to do it without a break in the sales relationship. BakPac’s Trade Services include: • Producing complete pouches for various markets in different materials and with a selection of finishes and embellishments. • Print only roll stock for customers to laminate and convert to pouches themselves • Print and laminate for customers to convert. We use an Enprom Thermal Laminator that is solvent free and can offer a wide range of suitable laminating materials. • Pouch conversion from customer printed stock www.bakpac.co.uk

Addressing the needs of label converters, new improvements include an optional orange colour channel, a screenlike high opacity white ink, and enhanced usability for greater production efficiencies. With the LabelStream’s expanded colour capability, you can add optional orange and white ink channels. Match a wider range of brand colours and achieve highest white opacity without compromising on quality or reliability. With additional opacities of more than 70% at 50 m/min and more than 65% at 75 m/min, a wide range of performance levels are available. Using Xaar 2001 printhead technology, which offers high pigment load, and increased ink laydown capability, the LabelStream inks attain a colour gamut of 96% with the spot colour swatch book at a Delta E 2000 value of less than 2. Deliver high quality labels, accurately matched brand colours and consistent output on standard label stock, print after print. The LabelStream 4000 CORE unit is the ideal first step into the world of high performance, UV inkjet printing. Built on a cost efficient, yet powerful base unit, you have the option to expand the press set-up to meet your needs. With its reliable UV inkjet technology and a robust web transport system, the press offers print speeds of up to 75m/min and two print width set-ups of 330mm or 410mm, resulting in an industry leading output speed of 1,845m²/hr, so you can benefit from quicker turnaround times. You can also
30
complement your digital production printer with UV flexo units for spot colours, varnishing and coating. For more complex applications, the LabelStream 4000 HYBRID configuration offers a custom mix of UV flexo, embellishment and finishing units, turning it into a fully integrated, single-pass label conversion line. This mix of conventional and digital technologies enables a complete inline production of high quality self-adhesive labels. Crit Driessen, Vice President and Head of Digital Packaging, Canon Production Printing, comments: “With Canon’s continuous commitment to enhance the functionalities of the LabelStream 4000 series, our customers can benefit from innovative capabilities to increase uptime and achieve greater production efficiencies, while relying on the quality of the printer’s output to help fuel profits. With this series, label converters can drive growth opportunities with labels of exceptional quality and with customisation abilities to add value to their prints.” www.canon-europe.com

THE JOKE’S ON YOU
READERS’ SCRIBES
SOMETHING TO SHARE? BLOW THAT
Did you hear about the inflatable boy at the inflatable school who was sent to see the inflatable headmistress for bringing in a pin? She said: “You’ve let me down, you’ve let yourself down, but worst of all you’ve let the school down.”
TAKE YOUR KID TO WORK DAY
An eight-year-old girl went to the office with her father on ‘Take your kid to work Day’. As they walked round the sales office she started crying and getting cranky. Her father asked what was wrong. As the staff gathered round she sobbed loudly, “Daddy, where are all the clowns you said you worked with?”
MARRIAGE
Daddy, why are all those cars beeping their horns? Because they were just at a wedding. Don’t we beep the horn as a warning signal, Daddy? Exactly, son.
NEW IPHONE
My daughter wants the new iPhone for her birthday. I told her she will if she gets good grades when she is back at school, does her chores and follows the house rules. Otherwise, she will get a cheaper phone because it’s my way or the Huawei.
SECOND NOTICE
A secretary walked into her boss’s office and said, “I’m afraid I’ve got some bad news for you.” “Why do you always have to give me bad news?” he complained. “Tell me some good news for once.” “Alright, here’s some good news,” said the secretary. “You’re not sterile.”
A taxpayer received a strongly worded “second notice” that his taxes were overdue. Hastening to the collector’s office, he paid his bill, saying apologetically that he had overlooked the first notice. “Oh,” confided the collector with a smile, “We don’t send out first notices. We have found that the second notices are more effective.”
WIFE WANTED
FOOTBALL BEFORE MARRIAGE
BILL GATES IS INNOCENT
I HAVE MOLES
GIVE ME SOME GOOD NEWS
A man inserted an advert in the classifieds: “Wife wanted.” Next day he received a hundred letters. They all said the same thing... “You can have mine.
A customer walks into a computer store. “I’m looking for a mystery adventure game with lots of graphics. You know, something really challenging.” After a while the clerk replied, “Have you tried Windows Power Point?”
HAVE YOU SEEN MY BROTHER?
A penguin walks into a bar. He goes to the counter and asks the bartender, “Have you seen my brother?” Bartender replies, “I don’t know, what does he look like?”
A man arrives at a costume party with a girl on his back.
A wife told her husband that he put football before their marriage. “That’s not true,” he said. “After all, this is our fourth season together.”
Pirate: I have moles on me back aaarrrghh. Doc: It’s ok, they’re benign. Pirate: Count again, I think there be ten!
TWO WINDMILLS
Two windmills are in a field. One asks, “What kind of music do you like?” The other one says, “Well, I’m a big metal fan.”
RINGING MY DOORBELL
My neighbour rang on my doorbell at 3 am... can you believe it? Luckily, I was still up playing the drums.
“I am a turtle,” he says.
CAPTAIN’S BLACK BOX
There was a captain of a ship who carried around a mysterious black box. Despite repeated questions from his crew, he refused to tell anyone what was inside the box. Years went by, and the mystery of the box grew and grew. It was all the crew could talk about. What was in that mysterious black box? One day a big storm quickly approached. The wind howled, and the ship was tossed on huge waves. Suddenly, a wave washed across the deck and swept the captain overboard. He disappeared from view and was never seen again. As soon as the storm passed, a sailor went to the captain’s cabin and retrieved the box. The entire crew circled around as he opened it and removed the only contents, a small piece of paper. On the paper was written, “Starboard is right, port is left.”
WHATEVER
What did the fish say when he hit a concrete wall? ‘Dam’. What do Eskimos get from sitting on the ice too long? Polaroids. What do prisoners use to call each other? Cell phones. What do you call a boomerang that doesn’t work? A stick. What do you call cheese that isn’t yours? Nacho Cheese. What do you call Santa’s helpers? Subordinate Clauses. What do you call four bullfighters in quicksand? Quatro sinko. What do you get when you cross a snowman with a vampire? Frostbite. What do you get when you cross an elephant and a skin doctor? A pachydermatologist What has four legs, is big, green, fuzzy, and if it fell out of a tree would kill you? A pool table. What is a zebra? 26 sizes larger than an ‘A’ bra. Why do gorillas have big nostrils? Because they have big fingers. Why are there so many Smiths in the phone book? They all have phones.
“Who’s on your back?”
“That’s Michelle.”
