Plockmatic acquires Morgana Systems Plockmatic International AB, one of the world’s leading developers and manufacturers of document finishing technology, has acquired Morgana Systems. The acquisition dramatically expands the two companies’ distribution capacity and product line, positioning the new group at the forefront of the industry. Morgana will be a wholly owned subsidiary of Plockmatic. The Swedish firm’s CEO, Jan Marstorp, will head the new group. Morgana will maintain its offices in Milton Keynes, UK, where Quen Baum will continue as Managing Director. Morgana Systems is a leader in the development and sales of off-line document finishing technology. Their products are sold through a direct sales force in the UK and a network of distributors around the world. Plockmatic is the leading supplier of in-line booklet making systems custom designed for the mid-range digital print segment. Plockmatic also manufactures a range of off-line booklet makers sold through independent distributors worldwide and a versatile mail-feeding system available through distributors and OEM partners. Plockmatic International is part of Grimaldi Industri Group, a diversified Stockholm based holding company. “The acquisition of Morgana gives us access to the product development, technology and distribution capabilities we need to reach more customers all over the world,” said Salvatore Grimaldi, owner and CEO. “I’m delighted to welcome Morgana to our group of companies.” Jan Marstorp of Plockmatic adds: “For a long time we’ve had enormous respect for Morgana’s people and its products. Together, these two
innovative companies add value to the printed page as part of the communications mix.” Quen Baum of Morgana says he is delighted that the company is being acquired by Plockmatic which he sees as the ideal partner for the future. “The combined companies and brands will be even stronger in the market and will better serve our customers and staff,” he says. “We look forward to the future and to being part of Plockmatic and the Grimaldi Industri Group.” www.plockmatic.com or www.morgana.co.uk

Taylor Brothers offers a tailored print solution The colour knowledge and skills within Heidelberg played a key part in the selection of a digital press by Taylor Brothers in Bristol. The Linoprint C901 will be installed at the city’s oldest printers next month. Two years ago the company added Prinect Color Toolbox to enable it to maintain colour calibration and control on its two litho presses, Speedmaster CD 74s. The company believes that the Linoprint C901 has the right print quality and that Heidelberg is a partner with the right skill set on colour issues to support it. “We looked at other options but we needed a good mid-range press which offered the best digital quality. The front end will be managed by the prepress staff but who will be lucky enough to run the Linoprint C901 itself has yet to be decided. Several members of staff have shown interest and the priority is to maximise the quality capability by using the extensive pool of in-house colour expertise,” says Charles Taylor, managing director. Taylor Brothers has a wide range of customers, primarily in the commercial market, who have high response requirements. Currently many of its customers place digital work elsewhere so there is an opportunity to secure that as well as making inroads into a wider customer base.
The company has recently secured a place on the Bristol City Council’s litho tender list, its first move into public sector work, and it hopes it might also secure a place on the digital list in future. “We do quite a volume of work for designers and agencies and many have already pledged to place digital work with us,” says Mr Taylor. “Digital will also allow us to further broaden our customer base.” The company will consider any job below 500 as eligible for the digital press although the decision
will be more complex than run length, including the expectations and preferences of its customers. It will also offer hybrid, combined litho and digital, options and develop its variable data service. Although the company, which has remained in family hands for over 150 years, operates a double day shift, the digital press will initially run on a single shift basis. Mint Signs targets expansion with Duplo Winchester based Mint Signs has just furnished its newly created print services division with an array of print finishing kit from Duplo International. Amongst the investment is a Duplo DC-615 digital cutter-creaser, DF-1000 folding machine and the recently launched IDEAL 4860-ET SRA3 guillotine. The finishing machines will be handling output from a new Xerox 700. With a strong emphasis on quality, personal service and fast turnarounds the company has built a loyal customer and has seen its turnover grow by 20% every year since it was established six years ago. The family owned company began life as an ‘at home’ business but as workloads increased, space became a major bottleneck to the company’s production capabilities. Managing Director Warren Beard explained, “We quickly outgrew the business from home model and needed extra space to keep up with the demand. We moved to our current site two years ago and have just increased our floor space by another 50% in the last couple of weeks.” Until the new kit arrived, the company was focused entirely on the sign making market offering vehicle graphics, signs and exhibition displays, banners and graphics. The new venture was prompted by the fact that Mint Signs wanted to be able to offer its clients extra services. “The ability to offer conventional print services is a natural extension of the existing business so the choice was quite straight forward,” Mr Beard added. Mr Beard explained that the major differentiator for the company is the quality of its service, “It is simply not enough to be cost competitive alone. Of course customers expect high quality products at a fair price but they also want suppliers to be flexible. We can turnaround urgent work really quickly and we can only do that because we have efficient staff and
productive equipment.” Over the years, the company has always upgraded its kit for more automated versions. This has enabled Mint to cut production time and increase quality simultaneously. When making the investment decision for the new equipment, Mr Beard was adamant that the company, “chose the highest level of automation available for the money”. Complementing the new kit, Mint have also invested in the workforce and taken on a new graphic designer so that the company can offer a complete print and design service. The new venture will be marketed under the name of Brocha print and design to appeal to new customers as well as the existing Mint Signs client base. Chromolux – winners of the ‘more with less’ challenge The response to the competition held by Chromolux was overwhelming. With nearly 300 submissions, the participating agencies, graphic and packaging designers, printers and brand owners impressively proved that less is often more. Any project was eligible that could demonstrate a reduction to the essentials. As a result, the five winners are quite diverse, ranging from a charming poster campaign for a hair salon to a clothing label for babies, and even including an innovative annual report. In addition to the award itself, the five winners can look forward to receiving a minimalist kitchen called the miniki – befitting the motto “less is more”. “We were astounded by the number and quality of the entries,” remarked Christian Drissler, marketing manager at Metsä Board Zanders, the makers of Chromolux. “Our ‘more with less’ challenge picks up on the trend towards a more resource efficient and eco-friendly future. The new minimalism is more than just a style – it’s an expression of a more sustainable economy.” The five winners demonstrated in striking ways just how effective a minimalist approach to both design and material selection can be. Viktor Balko, for instance, co-founder of the photo book publishers “Album Edition”, fascinated the four member jury with the publishing house’s very first effort. The book is dedicated to the Japanese photo minimalist Kyohei Abe and features a sensually appealing harmony between content, material and design.
The project submitted by Eberl Print proves that even an annual report can be innovative. In the document created for the Zumtobel
Group, text and image are consistently kept separate. “The concept and implementation in print, as well as the outstanding photography and typography, instantly convinced us”, said jury president Professor Klaus Hesse from Offenbach University of Art and Design. A clothing label for babies created by graphic designer Karin Lucas from ICONIC was also among the five winners. The rompers, t-shirts and bibs produced under the label ‘enfant gâté’ form a pleasant contrast to the usual brightly coloured baby garments and are promoted with a pictogram-like corporate design that runs consistently through all of the company’s communications. Another refreshingly different approach is taken in the poster campaign designed by the agency Carlitos y Patricia for a Spanish hairdresser: What is probably the world’s first comb-able mini poster addresses the student target group in a way that is both whimsical and attention grabbing. The image brochure for the print shop Gallery Print, designed by Boris Brumnjak, derives its appeal from its unpretentious imagery and clear typography. “Advertising can be this simple and this beautiful,” notes Professor Hesse. The shortlist chosen by the jury included 19 further outstanding works, which were awarded the title of “Finalist”. All winning projects will be featured in a publication scheduled to come out mid year. It will be available in bookstores or directly from Chromolux. The winning projects can be viewed at www.chromolux.de
Delta: Inca to print fantasy walk through When NBC Universal wanted an innovative walk-through entrance for larger cinemas showing the Snow White film they turned to The Delta Group. “The brief was to design and produce a large, dazzling, walk through display which would introduce the characters to the audience and create the right atmosphere from the moment they walked into the cinema. The whole experience was enhanced with sounds and visual displays, including live action movie footage,” says Adrian York, Senior Structural Designer, Structural Design, The Delta Group. The main challenge was the large size of the pieces to be printed and the structural 3-D design of the final display. The print registration was also critical in order to produce an accurate print of the original artwork, as was the quality of finish. Delta printed eight displays in total, each made up of around sixty different elements, onto corrugated board, FBB and clear PVC on its Inca Columbia Turbo 4-colour inkjet flatbed printer. The display won the 3D POS category award in the recent Inca Digital Excellence Awards (IDEAs). “The design and production of this entry is a tribute to the imagination and expertise of all involved,” said IDEAs judge Stan Kilpin. EFI Connect Conference Highlights Opportunity EFI hosted more than 1,100 customers, employees and industry experts for its Connect EFI users group conference. “This was the largest ever Connect event, and this year our customers had more access to EFI personnel than ever before,” said Frank Mallozzi, senior vice president of worldwide sales and marketing at EFI. “That level of interaction and the educational programming we’ve assembled make Connect one of a select few conferences that provide a high return on investment by giving attendees tangible business strategies for future success.” “The Connect conference helps to educate and expand attendees’ knowledge of EFI’s products and how those products can benefit their companies,” said one attendee, Brett McNerney, director of integrated solutions at the US-based Think Patented in Ohio. “It also brings together a large community of users and allows for networking that otherwise might not happen, making it a great forum for everyone to learn from each other.” This year’s conference at the Wynn Las Vegas, featured more than 150 sessions covering MIS/ERP software, web to print systems, industrial inkjet printers, and Fiery technology. Event highlights included a fireside chat between EFI CEO Guy Gecht and industry pioneer and Landa Corp. Chairman and CEO Benny Landa. Connect provided EFI with an opportunity to hold deeper discussions with customers while providing updates on company momentum. In keynotes, training sessions and informal conversations, EFI executives discussed the extended window of opportunity visual communications businesses have for growth as they adopt technologies that make them more efficient, more productive and more profitable. EFI’s Gecht also announced during Connect that the company will likely seek out more strategic acquisitions in 2013, continuing the momentum EFI has had from deals to purchase companies such as Web-to-print and dynamic publishing firm Online Print Solutions and print MIS/ERP provider Technique. EFI Connect has become a must attend industry event catering to visual communications business leaders’ needs. The annual conference helps customers improve their businesses by giving them tools to operate with greater efficiency, develop new applications and apply forward thinking innovation. In addition to featuring VUTEk, EFI Wide Format and Jetrion inkjet production printers, Connect technology highlights included a newly
enhanced line of JDF-certified Fiery digital front ends, as well as a complete line up of EFI Productivity Software products. EFI Partners participating in Connect included: 3M Commercial Graphics, Agile Network, Bunting Magnetics, Carlson Advisors, Esko, Honle UV America, KIP America, Kodak, Konica Minolta, MBM Corp., Metamation, Metrix Software, MGI USA, Pantone, Ricoh, SmartLinc, Xerox, xpedx and Zund. Partner activities at Connect included a live wrapping demonstration of 3M media with graphics produced using co-branded 3M and EFI UV inks. “3M Commercial Graphics valued the opportunity to participate at EFI Connect 2013, highlighting our longstanding, successful relationship with EFI to provide large format printing solutions backed by the 3M MCS Warranty,” said Jennifer Greenquist, inks and warranties manager for 3M Commercial Graphics. “Our vehicle wrap demonstration, using the new high performance, 3M Envision Wrap Films printed with EFI R3225 3M UV Inks, demonstrated that greener graphic solutions are available today without compromising performance, durability or colour fidelity.” Next year’s Connect user’s group conference will take place 21-24 January, 2014, at the Wynn Las Vegas Resort. www.efi.com
Fujifilm signs up as sponsor of PrintIT! The PrintIT! programme aims to encourage students to consider a career in the print and paper industries. The initiative has attracted support from the industry since its launch, with key industry partner, Fujifilm, the latest to lend its backing. The PrintIT! programme has attracted support from a broad range of companies since its launch in 2005 with Fujifilm, the latest to add its backing to the initiative. The announcement of Fujifilm’s sponsorship was warmly welcomed by Richard Moore of Proskills and the National Skills Academy. “Fujifilm’s generous sponsorship will really help the programme. It’s great to work with a company that really understands how important it is to help cultivate the next generation of talent for the print and related industries”. Judith Spear, communications manager, Fujifilm UK comments: “We’re delighted to support the great work of the PrintIT! programme for another
year. It’s never been more crucial to nurture new talent in our industry and PrintIT!’s great work gets students passionate about print, encouraging them to look at the many and varied aspects of print in a different light. We’re extremely proud to be part of such an inspirational event and long may it continue.” A recent survey of over 1000 students that took part in PrintIT! 2011/2012 has shown that the number of young people who would now consider a career in the print and packaging industry has quadrupled as a result of the hard work of the students and print companies who support young people through the programme each year. Introducing students to the PrintIT! programme is heightening awareness among them of the wide range of career opportunities available in the print and related industries and the scope they offer for individual creativity. This in turn will help companies attract talented new entrants and build for the future. For further information on PrintIT! visit www.printit.org.uk or contact the PrintIT! NO MORE WASTED HOURS AT THE GUILLOTINE With the coming of digital print, lower volumes and moving registration, guillotines no longer offer the best solution for finishing. Business card cutting can involve so many complex cuts that it can take an age to complete. With the Uchida register system each card is cut in the same position from sheet to sheet. No more wandering, the correct position every time. The Uchida BC-10 Business Card Cutter has become the biggest selling Automatic A4 Business Card Cutter in the UK market. The UCHIDA BC-10 Business Card Cutter works alongside any high quality digital photocopying or printing device to produce professionally cut business cards automatically, easily and fast. (250 in just over two minutes.) Whether you are a small business or large corporation producing 1000’s of cards a day, the cutting edge innovations being applied to the UCHIDA BC-10 Business Card Cutter will satisfy your every need. Easy to operate the BC-10 is designed to operate simply at the touch of a button for selecting the cutting modes, such as paper size and trimming margin. A unique automatic sharpening system means razor sharp edges at all times with a blade life of approximately 1.7 million cuts...No time wasted extracting or sending blades off to be sharpened. The position of initial cutting edge in paper feed direction is so accurate that the cut line does not deviate from the correct line throughout the cutting operation (tolerance of cut size: 0.05mm). Correction of any potential cutting line
deviation is enabled by the detection and alignment of the register line mark printed at the top of each sheet. Easy maintenance In case of a specific error, a code number is displayed on the display panel to facilitate identification of the source and help to eliminate it. Economy The Uchida cutter is 20 times more durable than that of some other cutters in this range. It can also make 10 business cards on A4 size or letter size sheet with bleed, in contrast to some other cutters that can make only eight business cards on one sheet. (ln double cut mode). For the safety of any and all personnel who will operate the BC-10 a reliable, safety Interlock system automatically stops operation while the top cover is open or if the paper waste disposal box is not set in its proper position.

Ashgate launch Sheet and Book Flattener Ashgate Automation has designed and built the Rolapress sheet and book flattener to work alongside offline staple-folder bookletmakers and digital colour printers with inline booklet finishers. It processes folded sheets and booklet sizes from individual CD size through to 460mm x 460mm. “Most bookletmakers produce booklets with a spongey feel to the folded spine,” said John Price, Managing Director. “The Rolapress is a very simple, compact machine, which is very effective in transforming the quality of the booklet by perfectly flattening the spine in just a few seconds. It produces a sharp fold on the heaviest of booklets to give a professional finish.” For a crisp finish, sheets and books are positioned against the lay and the pressing roller is slid up and down the folded edges. It can be used left or right handed. Thinner booklets can be processed at five to ten
booklets at a time while thicker books benefit from being flattened individually. Creased and folded spreads, especially laminated spreads being used on the Fastbind Fotomount lay-flat photobook maker, also benefit from the
sharp Rolapress finish. “At only £349 + Vat, we believe that there are a lot of applications for the Rolapress in the digital print finishing market,” John commented. Further information: www.ashgate.co.uk

A3M Designs bring splash of colour to Beaulieu
Océ has been part of A3M Designs work to enhance the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu. The Hampshire based printer used its Océ Arizona 360GT to decorate one of the more popular children’s attractions at the museum. Eight specially printed, profile cut, di-bond graphics featuring cartoon characters and cars add a splash of colour to the surrounds of the children’s pedal car track. The three millimetre thick boards are proving popular with the young motorists, who have to navigate road junctions and traffic lights as part of the fun at the popular New Forest attraction. A3M Designs is run by husband and wife team Linda and Ken Green in Farlington, near Portsmouth. The project was printed by the company using the Océ Arizona 360GT, a machine capable of printing to virtually any substrate up to 48mm thick. Bridget Slevin, Head of Beaulieu Graphics Dept, comments: “These boards around the pedal car track have to withstand plenty of wear and tear so the ink has to be robust and tough and suitable for all kinds of outdoor weather. We’ve been delighted with the results. Ken’s very helpful and now he’s got the Océ Arizona there’s a lot more scope for future projects.” Ken Green, Director of A3M Designs, which was founded over 30 years ago, said: “I’ve invested £100,000 in this new Océ Arizona and we are already seeing significant benefits with new work coming in, such as extra projects with the National Motor Museum along with other projects using white ink on acrylic panels and the more common foamex panels. The Océ Arizona has shown a three fold saving in print times and a huge reduction in finishing work, allowing us to cut turnaround times for our customers and meet those all important deadlines.”
Dominic Fahy, Business Group Director, Display Graphics and Business Supplies, Océ UK said: “The Arizona printers stand up to competition with all of their accolades and awards. Companies such as A3M Designs that have invested in the right systems and the right skills are in a stronger position to grow their business going forward.” www.oce.co.uk

New CiPress from Xerox
Xerox’s new CiPress 500 and 325 single engine duplex (SED) production inkjet systems make it easier for printers to produce lower volumes of transactional, direct marketing, catalogues, books and manuals – at a lower cost of ownership. The CiPress SED is a powerful single engine configuration – with many of the same features as the twin engine devices, the Xerox CiPress 500 and 325 production inkjet systems. The CiPress SED’s compact configuration – suitable for operations with limited floor space – prints duplex jobs, one up on a narrow 241mm (9.5”) web at 152m (500 feet) or 100m (325 feet) per minute.
Using Xerox’s waterless inks, the CiPress SED produces vibrant, full colour images and graphics on low cost, plain papers. An ink optimisation mode reduces the amount of ink coverage on pages that have more text and fewer graphics. Ink monitoring reports let printers know the exact amount of ink used for precise job costing. Increasing volume shifts can easily be adjusted between the single engine duplex and twin engine full width mode, without purchasing an additional engine. CiPress SED can also help printers: • Be more productive – with built-in automated closed loop self correcting controls that improve uptime. • Print more jobs – with Xerox FreeFlow print server which handles complex variable jobs without sacrificing print speed. It offers native support for IPDS, PDF, PS and VIPP. www.xerox.com

Atlantic Zeiser to Demonstrate Advanced Card Personalisation
Atlantic Zeiser will highlight its array of highly creative, modular, cost effective solutions for the production of personalised ID, driving license, and health insurance cards at CARTES in Asia, Hong Kong, March 27 and 28. “The timing and location of this event are perfect for a couple of reasons,” comments René Stoerk, Director Sales Card Systems, Atlantic Zeiser. “First, the card market is one of the few to buck the global economic trend and achieve double digit growth during a turbulent economic period, according to the International Card Manufacturers Association’s (ICMA) Global Card Market Statistics Report. Secondly, Asia itself is enjoying growth in all aspects of card production, including ID and loyalty – particularly as retailers and brands are looking to introduce loyalty initiatives that have already proven to be highly successful in Europe and North America.” Atlantic Zeiser will highlight how the 6,000 c/h PERSOLINE focuses on the personalisation of ID card applications delivering high processing speed at significantly lower consumable cost. The system features DOD inkjet printing capabilities allowing full colour photo personalisation on preprinted cards. Complete full bleed artwork printing and personalisation on blank card stock is possible in one pass. For enhanced security the print can either be protected by covering the entire card face with a security laminate using the special patented Atlantic Zeiser CoolShield lamination process. Alternatively a highly durable varnish layer for spot varnish or full bleed varnish can be offered. PERSOLINE combines these features with scalable chip programming (contact + contactless) of up to 120 programming heads, HiCo
and LoCo magnetic encoding and binary or grayscale laser marking. Additionally special security features are available even in combination with the four colour DOD printing module. Atlantic Zeiser will also be demonstrating fast personalisation of magstripe cards including closed and open loop gift cards, loyalty and membership cards with its global best seller, the 30,000 c/h CARDLINE VERSA. This versatile personalisation system can handle a wide range of card formats such as odd shaped cards and hangtags. It offers fast set-up times and quick job changeover while the adjustable high-speed mag encoding (HiCo and LoCo) allows encoding of magstripes in ISO and non-ISO positions and even simultaneous encoding of two parallel magstripes. Encoding is possible top-down or bottom-up. Other features include an inline ATTACHing module for attaching carriers to the cards as well as a flipping module for one pass personalisation of both card faces as required for open loop cards. “Our modular systems are scalable and field upgradable, delivering maximum flexibility with a clear upgrade path,” adds Stoerk. “We want visitors to see how we can help them create a valuable card production proposition that exactly suits their markets and budgets.” For detailed information about Atlantic Zeiser’s complete range of personalisation solutions, please visit: www.atlanticzeiser.com

…and cut! VersaCAMM on Corrie
Coronation Street is one of the nation’s most loved television programmes but what goes into creating all the banners, packets, labels. We take a ‘real’ close look.
T
he lives of the residents of the cobbled street are discussed on television gossip pages and in living rooms up and down the country. Much effort goes into making sure the set looks as realistic as possible – from billboards and flyers posted on walls to packaging labels on items for sale in the Corner Shop. Lynsey Shepard is the programme’s principle graphic designer and is responsible for creating all these applications as authentically as possible, and her Roland VersaCAMM SP-300i printer/cutter has been crucial to ensuring the set’s printed materials are ready whenever the show’s demanding and fluid filming schedules require them. The Roland was purchased and installed two years ago following a recommendation from another graphic designer who was familiar with Roland’s products. It is the first machine to be used by Coronation Street’s design team and Lynsey has been very impressed with the performance of the VersaCAMM and after sales support received through the RolandCare service and support package. “I’ve been really impressed with our Roland machine. The majority of the material we print is on vinyl, as it’s far more practical to have waterproof labels and signage given the nature of this business. The print and cut function is excellent and saves so much time, and it’s very precise — even when cutting circles. We’ve had a couple of small teething problems along the way, but with the RolandCare warranty service we are able to call out an engineer to get us back on our feet again quickly.” Keeping overall production costs down was another decisive factor in Lynsey’s decision to stop outsourcing and purchase the SP-300i, and the machine has already paid for itself many times over. Continues Lynsey: “We used to outsource our print jobs to a local printing company. While the quality was good, it was more expensive and really restricted our flexibility on set as if we needed something last minute we would either have to wait or reschedule filming around this. Having the Roland on site means we are now able to quickly re-print material for extra takes and ensure we can always keep up with the schedule.” The VersaCAMM is a very versatile machine and is used to print a wide range of set graphics including those that are iconic to the soap from beer labels for the Rovers Return’s house ale, Newton and Ridley, or posters on the wall of the pub, to stickers on the door of the Corner Shop, signage for the taxis or a vehicle wrap for a courier van if someone on the street is due to receive a package, for example. The VersaCAMM SP-i series comprises two models
— the 30inch SP-300i and the 54inch SP-540i. One of Roland’s most popular printer/cutters, the machine delivers reliability and performance for a low initial investment. Available with a four colour printing system, the SP-i series can be left unattended for long print runs leaving the user free to perform other jobs safe in the knowledge the Roland is managing the task in hand. Concludes Lynsey: “I’ve been a graphic designer for nearly ten years and I’ve witnessed a great number of changes in the industry over this time, many as a result of the technological advances companies such as Roland have made in the development of printers and ink. Print quality is certainly one of the biggest improvements I’ve seen. The vibrancy of the print finish from today’s printers is astonishing and the quality of the Eco-
Sol Max inks with the Roland is brilliant. What’s very impressive is there is really no compromise to bringing a machine in house. With the Roland we have a print and cut device on site that is of the highest production quality and flexible enough to handle whatever is required of it.” Rob Goleniowski, Business Manager — Sign and Graphics at Roland DG UK commented: “We are delighted Roland has a role in the production of Coronation Street! The SP-300i is an all rounder ideal for these kinds of jobs — offering the user a fantastic, cost effective, high quality finish and the space saving benefit of having the printer and cutter in one machine.” To find out more about Roland’s VersaCAMM SP-300i, please call 0845 230 90 60 or visit www.rolanddg.co.uk/VersaCAMMSP
a Roland user and proud of it. Our Roland is everything we wanted and more! I can honestly say that my Roland SolJet has opened up so many new markets that it’s the single machine that’s helped our business to grow. We can print on thousands of different materials with absolute confidence, it’s everything we wanted and more. We haven’t just bought a machine, we have been welcomed into a new Roland family who’ve supported us since we bought the machine six years ago. We recently invested in a latex machine but it really hasn’t worked out well for us, it has confirmed that our future lies firmly with Roland.

Your Design and Print OnLine Shop open 24/7
Isn’t it time you updated your shop to compete with the websites stealing your customers? Your professional print advice, combined with an e-commerce front will create new business for all your products, starting with the business card.
I
n response to numerous readers enquiries we have been researching how to compete on line with various ‘vista print’ types of self-publishing web2print offerings. It is no good just picking on their shortcomings as their massive advertising campaigns, across all medias, are being paid for by our potential customers. So they must offer a service that is required. Leading with a special offer that is not really deliverable new businesses are lured into websites that have a process that adds to their final bill before the final transaction. Little extras like design, express production time and delivery, can take a £5 offer or free invitation up to nearly £30 on some of our road tests. So we can compete on price, but win on so much more. As a sensible first step we have chosen a template shop provider that uses the proper finished sized UK business card 85mm x 55mm. The choice of business categories can be expanded and local company templates uploaded for personalisation and order processing. The trial of many systems put the QPP reporters in a real customer scenario, when web pages froze or timed out too many times we moved on. Rejecting nine out of ten systems made choosing the remaining, speedy, simple to use
B2Cprintshop.com business an easy decision. To our delight we can also add other products too, which can all be designed, ordered and paid for online, all we have to do is the printing. To save on postage we really want our local customers to call in so we can show off all our other services. Unlike other web2print firms we also want our customers to phone in with any questions along the way. So many QPP club members have told us about software that confuses customers, especially if uploading images, when the business is just lost over the web. As an industry we still want to serve our customers, talk them through any issues and if the situation requires a face-to-face meeting then we will do that too. After all we have a customer ready shop willing to interface with real people and help produce print fit for purpose. Not every case will fit neatly into an online ordering system and those shortcomings will be to our advantage as we can offer the best of both worlds. Online shops that will phone you back and talk new customers through print design, process and print. Yes we are still accountable! 01273 674321. include a real address. The proof as they say is in the tasting so QPP have tweaked the B2Cprintshop model to our own shop Colourfast for you to have a demonstration of how your shop can compete. www.PrintShopOnline.co.uk Choose a product from the front page, a business card. Select a category of business, say architecture, and then decide on which design you prefer and start inputting your text. Where this system excels is that your chosen business card is personalised before your eyes, on each keystroke the text on the layout is updated. This is better than some other systems that need a refresh for the whole lot at the end. For most web shoppers this is as much as is required, if you sit with a customer and want to change the text colour size or typeface then design away, as all is possible. We are offering a real hands on trial to all QPP readers where the PDF generated will be sent to you to appraise then print. Use this as a sample or a real design for a customer, just use this 100% discount code ‘qpptrial’ at the checkout and we will know not to print the cards and just email you the print ready artwork. You will also have helped test the system which incidentally won’t generate artwork for free as the proofs on line have a proof stamp on. This is to save your web shop visitors using the design software for free and printing elsewhere. Your case study delivery price will also cover the B2C licence and the admin here at QPP. This demonstration is priced at just £3.99 to generate print ready artwork direct to your inbox. As part of our marketing we wanted to use a different web name from our everyday business to help monitor response, although the design and print on line facility will be linked from our original copy shop site. This may lead to an affiliate scheme to offer some of our entrepreneurial regulars. Using different codes we can monitor where the business is generated and from who and pay a commission, or at least understand what promotions work best. Now to the costs I hear you ask. Allow £1 for each design and order process and you will have some change. This is how it all works. B2C offer two levels of web shop for you and as a QPP reader you will qualify for special terms negotiated on our group purchasing power and potential usage. Firstly the running costs assuming you are vat registered and paying the average cost per print charge to your printer supplier. Printing A3 or even SRA3 will increase the profits projected here.

The three elements that make up this new feature are: • The New Business Tour will guide visitors around the show stopping at designated stands that can demonstrate new business opportunities, markets and ideas to help start your new sign making business, take your existing business into new areas or show how you can make your business run more efficiently. • The New Business Theatre will host a number of thought provoking sessions related to making money from niche industry areas. Exact times will be announced on the Sign and Digital UK website so you can plan your visit in advance. • The New Business Café will be the starting place for visitors to pick up
further information about the newly introduced Tour and Theatre. Once they have taken the tour and soaked up the free advice on the theatre they can relax and network over a coffee and discuss new business opportunities in more detail in the cafe. Alan Caddick, Senior Marketing Manager for Sign & Digital UK explains; “To further increase the advice on offer at the show, we have introduced this new feature which will be a really effective way for business owners to spend their time. The idea is for business professionals to get face to face with the specialists and actually see how they can make money, in many instances by adding to their existing business for surprisingly small investment.”
EFI confirms presence and doubles footprint at North Print & Pack 2013 Informa Exhibitions has announced that EFI has confirmed its attendance at NorthPrint & Pack 2013, which is taking place at the Harrogate International Centre from 14th-16th May. Returning after a successful Northprint show in 2011, EFI will be doubling its floorspace to 36m2 to reflect its offering for the commercial print and digital print for packaging markets. “It’s exciting to see North Print & Pack 2013 reinventing itself and adding the packaging market to its target audience,” comments Danny Morris, Regional Sales Director, EFI Northern Europe. “EFI will use North Print & Pack as a unique platform to show its end-to-end workflows for both the packaging and commercial printing sectors, from job submission with Digital StoreFront W2P to the Fiery digital front-end that drives more digital printing than any other RIP. Our portfolio of business management solutions, especially after the recent acquisitions of Prism, Radius and Technique as well as Monarch and Pace precisely meet the needs of each application, which should make the show particularly appealing for more reasons than location alone.” Mary Buck, Sales Manager for North Print & Pack 2013, adds: “We are delighted with the positive reaction and engagement we’re getting from the industry. Commitment from leading suppliers like EFI will act as a magnet for similar or complementary products for commercial and packaging printers, specifiers, publishers and marketing service providers nationwide.” She concludes: “North Print & Pack 2013 is well on track to be the number one industry event for the UK in 2013, and will be presenting visitors with the very latest offerings through the whole commercial print and print for packaging processes.” For more information about North Print & Pack 2013, please visit www.printandpack.co.uk.

Moving in Changing Times By the time you read this Martin Christie would have emptied the contents of the goodie bag from the NEC’s Focus on Imaging Expo to start sifting through the samples and brochures to find the relevant news.
I
f you went to the show, as recommended last month, you may already have what you want. But if you didn’t, or didn’t get to see everything, then I may be able to update you on some gems next month, and underline how photography, and digital imaging has become much more central to what we do as printers. Many years ago, literally in the last century, when colour was introduced to copy shops, capability was the key word. The colour was there, but the comparatively primitive technology of the seventies and eighties could not compete with the quality of image achieved by lithographic reproduction of the time, so the thought of producing short run brochures and leaflets in anything other than mono or maybe spot colour, was a non starter. So you didn’t even consider it as an option. Digital technology transformed all that, not only the speed and accuracy of actual printing, but also the ability to capture, edit and transfer pictures and text. And things will continue to move on, which is why it is vital to keep abreast of development in related industries where there is an overlap of circumstance and experience. Last month I headlined the demise of high street photographic chain Jessops, and how it, along with other cumbersome giants of retailing had failed to react appropriately to changing times and competition from the internet. It is the same challenge that faces high street print on demand outlets as we know. It was not particularly helpful, in the wake of several big closures, to hear the chairman of Tesco’s state that the demise of retail on the high street was inevitable like some sort of natural selection. Perhaps when the bulldozers move in on his supermarkets he will change his tune.
Moving with the times is easily said, and if you are an equity company that can move money overnight to another continent. If you are a local business with thousands of pounds invested in bricks and mortar, not to mention metal and plastic, it’s not so easy. The dilemma for a business rooted in solid technology and hardware is that there are few cheap options that can make a significant advance in efficiency and profitability. In comparison the average consumer can take a giant leap into the future at the price of a few hundred pounds. This is the crucial difference. Previously technology progressed at a relatively pedestrian pace compared to today. Now it’s like a runner on steroids. Ten years ago, at the very same Focus Exhibition, digital cameras were rapidly becoming popular alongside conventional film, but there was a big gap between smaller affordable compact systems, and the much more expensive interchangeable lens DSLRs aimed at the professional user. Later the same year Canon introduced the 300D and I remember featuring it in these pages as a milestone in the development of digital photography. It wasn’t that it was a great camera. It was because Canon had achieved a first in getting a 35mm equivalent digital at sale price of under a thousand pounds. They had achieved it by cutting corners, shoe-horning the electronics into a cheaper plastic body, and using a lower specification lens as standard, but nevertheless the budget based device became the standard choice for the amateur enthusiast who wanted to get abreast of the times and be seen to be fully “modern”. A six megapixel camera it came with a 64 mb memory card as standard — specifications which now seem hopelessly out of date. But it was the right camera at the right place for the right market, and with a range of aftermarket accessories and updated models, was a perfect product for the Jessops stores of the day, suited to the Saturday afternoon browsers who in the motor trade are known as “tyre kickers”. In 2012, the Saturday afternoon browsers still went to Jessops, and kicked tyres, but they bought on Amazon. Now for half the price of a 300D then, you can buy a 24 megapixel DSLR that will also shoot high definition video, and

want to pay, and waive a proof under their nose for final approval. Playing pass the parcel with email opens so many more opportunities for error and misunderstanding, especially if the person at the other end is viewing a round robin on a small screen and may miss something important if they are chatting on facebook at the same time. This is one of the unseen consequences of moving with the times. Another more obvious result is the ease of use of often very sophisticated software applications, many free downloads, on phones. These are made possible by much more powerful processors in the devices. In the middle of February for example, HTC unveiled their latest Android smartphone. The 13 Mp camera phone HTC One has a 4.7 inch 1920x1080 display with a quadcore processor, 2 GB of RAM and 64GB of built in storage. That would have been a respectable specification on a desktop not so many years ago. Compared to older camera phones the new megapixel smart ones take pretty good pictures. They are still limited by the optical capabilities of a small lens, but boosted by the processing performance, and flattered by a high definition screen. In real terms a good smart phone can potentially save an image for quality print somewhere between A6 and A5 — or about 6x4in or 5x7in in old money. This is where all but the top end digital cameras were a decade ago, so that puts their output in perspective, and it’s worth keeping that piece of wisdom in your back pocket when explaining to customers why that lovely picture won’t blow up to life size at the same quality. Of course they will get better, if users are able to fathom the saving options, and probably sooner rather than later. Ironically, they are already spawning add-on gadgets like extra lenses and more. But having to take a gadget bag with your pocket-sized mobile surely defeats the object? One of the biggest developments has been in the menu inside, and this has been no bad thing. To increase popularity and use, manufacturers have realised they have to make technology as simple as possible in operation. This is almost in complete contrast to some camera manufacturers who seemed to delight in making things as complicated as possible to perform quite simple tasks. Many of the afore-mentioned amateurs who bought the original Canon 300D never actually got off automatic most of the time as they could never work out how to programme the alternative functions, at least without spending an hour or so going through the handbook. The smartphone use has no such headaches. Not only are they easy to use as a camera, and a communications device, user friendly phone programmes also enable phone users to do what once were quite complicated edits to images, as well as create artwork from original designs or templates. They may be seen as amusing gadgets, but they will increasingly threaten to encroach on territory that would once have been that of the studio designer. At the very least, customers will be less likely to part with extra cash for design work on a job when they can apparently do something just as good with the flick of a finger. You can’t run a print shop from a smartphone, but you can keep one eye on software that can save you time and money. The big jobs will always need special attention, but many simple edits on business cards and flyers don’t always need full studio attention especially if margins are tight. Some of the phone applications are available for desktops as well, and I have mentioned before plug-ins that will save time when performing tasks in Photoshop. Moving with the times means picking up anything that will be helpful to ease production and software is certainly something I will be sifting through with a keen eye from my Focus foray and reporting next month. Hardware development, in terms of printers and production, is by its nature slower as it takes a little longer to re-construct the wheel entirely. But even minor developments can reap benefits as the market moves on. I’ll try and cover both next month and in future columns.
the difference between six and twenty four in terms of captured pixels, and the processing power that goes with them, is immense. It’s also the numerical threshold where pixel density is reckoned to be the equivalent of conventional 35mm film. Ten years ago, digital cameras in mobile phones were already very popular, but again were comparatively primitive, hence the need still to have a point and shoot option as an extra rather than an all-in one device as we have today. Ten years ago, images from phone or camera had to be downloaded physically onto a desktop or laptop, saved and uploaded. Now images can be taken and edited, with text and special effects by a device held in one hand, and transferred around the world at the push of one or two buttons. What was once a novelty has become a must-have accessory, and has transformed how people communicate with each other both socially and economically. The intelligent phone or pad has not only stunted camera sales, but static computers generally. They have opened the digital world to many consumers who would never before have dabbled in it, and altered the way others interact with their services and suppliers. And like most great leaps forward, this brings both good news and bad news. While there is a greater potential for customers to conceive and create, as well as communicate, there is also the consequence that they won’t necessarily be sitting at a desk concentrating on one job in hand, but multi-tasking with the risk of not doing any of the tasks particularly well. If it’s just a matter of a text misdirected or an embarrassing picture circulated to a whole address book rather than a particular friend, it’s not the end of the world. But in our real world of hard copies, the wrong information causes costs and wastage. Years ago I could communicate with a client with the occasional meeting and most often mail (the old stuff that went in an envelope) or sometimes phone or fax, and you could accept a certain delay in transmission in return for the facts. Now we are all in touch in theory twenty four seven, it sometimes seems even harder to get a proper answer. Certainly there seems to be an increasing number of jobs batted back and forth until they are sorted. When you are talking to a customer at the counter, you can tell if you have their full attention, check what they actually want and

Favini renews its commitment to Madagascar Favini is underlining its commitment to protecting the environment by renewing its support for a community based project in Madagascar, off the African coast. In collaboration with the University of Padua, Favini is working to help improve the quality of life for the community of Sahavondria by teaching more innovative farming techniques that make it possible to respect the local ecosystem while helping them develop a more ecological tourism industry. The project is named “Voiala” and is a microcosm of community actions aimed at recreating and protecting natural resources that are being heavily exploited. The main goal of the project is to take advantage of the experience at Sahavondria to develop a model for the other
local communities to follow, while underscoring the benefits that can be obtained from the land and its resources simply through more conscious, respectful conduct At present, the inhabitants of this village, located on the eastern coast of Madagascar, are engaged in protecting 2040 hectares of virgin forest and in reforestation efforts for the land surrounding the village, which has been stripped bare by decades of exploitation. Favini is extremely proud to be have helped the Madagascar community since 2009 to regain control over
its local environment through the company’s know how, financial support and increasing awareness of the compromised status of the environment. The targets to be reached in order to achieve the overall goal are very clear: protect the forest and reforest lands that have been damaged by illegal clear cutting and by poachers. For the first three years, Project Voiala focused on protecting 2,000 hectares (4,942 acres) of virgin forest from further destruction, exploitation and poaching, as well as on related education efforts. At the same time, infrastructures were created in order to help with reforestation. This created the foundation for the next step of reforestation. Quarterly reports will be posted to the Favini web site to show the
project as it develops – sowing seeds, land preparation and tree planting – with before and after images. Favini is proud to be supporting such a project of such great social importance. Favini is constantly committed to the environment and was the first company to implement production processes certified by the international Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) as a guarantee of respecting rigorous environmental, social and economic standards in the raw materials used to manufacture wood and paper products. The Favini web site (www.favini. com) also includes a section dedicated to Project Voiala, which includes a detailed description of the project and constant updates on the progress being made.

The First Eco Friendly Paper, Praised At Paperworld Says Andrea Nappa, CEO Favini: “We are proud that CRUSH has been chosen by the organisers of Paperworld as an example of innovation. At Favini, we strongly believe in this new product and we believe that our commitment to produce a paper with a high value of sustainability will be repaid by the interest of the market. www.favini.com
At Paperworld 2013 Favini CRUSH was mentioned as one of the most innovative products presented during the event. The organisers especially recognised it as a product with a story to tell: CRUSH is the first and only range of ecological papers made with by-products from organic products (corn, citrus and kiwi fruits, olives, almonds, hazelnuts and coffee beans), replacing as much as 15% of traditional wood pulps. At a time of increasing resource scarcity, Favini, after hundreds of hours of research and fine tuning, was able to relieve the pressure on forests and to give a new life to waste, elevating them to the raw material.

It’s another great Trophex show! Despite the snowy weather Trophex 2013 proved to be yet another successful show for the trophy, awards and personalisation industry. The industry was well represented with all the big companies from the world of trophies, lasers and engraving, sublimation and personalisation, printing and embroidery solutions to name just a few. With Christmas a distant memory, Trophex is a good way to start the year, it gave visitors the chance to see what’s new for the season ahead as there is always an exciting array of new products, newly designed trophies and awards and the chance to pick up the latest catalogues for the new year and vote in the Trophex Awards — which were back by popular demand. With many exhibitors giving away exclusive special offers on their stands the show was definitely not to be missed! As always there was a good mix of new and returning exhibitors to Trophex, giving visitors the chance to see familiar faces as well as also looking for new ways to diversify and expand their business. All the key industry figures were represented with trophy companies including Cebrian (UK) Ltd, Charles Birch Group, Glenway Products Ltd, Goodwill Trophy Company, SDL Group Ltd, Swatkins Group Ltd, Transworld Trophies, Trendsetting Awards, Trophy Distributors UK Ltd and Tryumf. Regular exhibitor Trendsetting Awards praised Trophex 2013. They had a busy couple of days and saw lots of new people from the UK and Ireland; they were particularly impressed to see visitors from Scotland – despite the weather! As well as their usual array of trophies and awards, they were also showing their new ‘Express Plates’ label printer on their stand. The printer prints labels onto a metal effect label creating an engraved look with clarity and can be used on anything from cups and awards to labels for clothing. Trend were delighted that visitors loved
this fast and easy way to personalise items. Leading UK supplier of glass and crystal blanks and supplier of beautifully engraved glass and crystal gifts and awards, Crystal Galleries, were also present at the show. They have an impressive 150 new items for 2013, all of which they brought to the show. These include coloured crystal and Swarovski crystal awards and candle holders. They have also added more promotional items to their 2013 catalogue including stunning optic paper weights, key rings and memory sticks. When reflecting on the show, Managing Director Jeremy Lowes said: “Trophex is always a great show for us and a great way to start the year. Visitors loved our new lines which bodes well for 2013.” Blankproducts Ltd were new exhibitors to the show. They offer a range of products including key rings, fridge magnets and pens plus a variety of products that allow you to insert your own image or logo. The company used the show to launch their fourth product range: the keyring fab system which allows customers to make high quality metal keyrings. The show proved very successful for them, said Peter Sansome, Managing Director: “Trophex has been a great show for us, we’ve seen lots of visitors to our stand who have been very keen to learn more about our products — we have potentially opened up new markets for a lot of people. We will be back next year for sure!” QuickDome.com was also new to the show, part of KYD Products; they used Trophex to launch QuickDome – their great new doming system. The system provides everything you need to produce your own domed centres and the components to turn them into gifts and giveaways. When reflecting on the show, Adrian Light, Managing Director at the company said: “QuickDome has been very well received at Trophex, we have seen a lot of people who are genuinely interested in our products and we have taken more orders than we had initially expected.”
Lasers and engraving is a big part of the industry and they were well represented with companies including CSI Manufacturing Ltd, Gravograph Ltd, Halo Lasers Ltd, HPC Laser Ltd, Mastergrave Ltd, Metaza.com, Signature Engraving Systems UK Ltd, Trotec Laser Ltd and U-Marq Ltd. Personalisation is big business and another area which visitors could see at the show. TheMagicTouch, who have been manufacturing and marketing a comprehensive range of coated transfer papers and associated products since 1989, had a busy exhibition. They were showing their entire product range including the Graphtec CE6000 cutter which comes with its own software package. And it was the first time they’ve shown the new incredible OKI C711WT Colour plus White LED Printer in the UK which visitors were blown away by! The new white toner delivers a superb opacity level that produces a very high ‘white’ factor, especially for non-fabric, hard surface applications as well as for garments and textiles. Visitors to Merlin Transfers stand were able to see their impressive range of products which included low cost dye sublimation systems, dye-sub printers and mug presses as well as flat bed presses and a wide range of blank printables including mugs, phone cases and iPad covers. The company is also able to remotely install every system free of charge. They saw a lot of interest from visitors over the two days, said Richard Lockwood, Managing Director: “Trophex was a busy show for us, we were very happy with the quality of potential clients. Our mug presses were particularly popular with single shop owners as it gives them a good starting block for diversifying”. New to 2013 is the Trophex virtual tour which can be found on the website at: www.trophex. com. Keeping the exhibition alive until 2014, click on to to see a colour coded tour of all the exhibitor stands and a link through to their websites. 27

Life after Copier Sales An ex copier salesman was hired to paint a white line down the middle of the road. On the first day, he got off to a good start and he painted a white line seven miles long. The next day, however, he painted a line only four miles long. On the third day, he was down to less than a mile. Finally, his friend Max asked him why he was doing less each day. The salesman replied, “I guess it takes me longer and longer to get back to the bucket each day.”

The job interview An executive was interviewing a young woman for a position in his company. He wanted to learn something about her personality, so he asked, “if you could have a conversation with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?” She quickly responded, “The living one.”
GOOD LUCK, MR. GORSKY In case you didn’t already know this little tidbit of trivia... On July 20 1969, as commander of the Apollo 11 Lunar Module, Neil Armstrong was the first person to set foot on the moon. His first words after stepping on the moon, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,” were televised to earth and heard by millions.” But just before he re-entered the lander, he made the enigmatic remark; “Good luck, Mr. Gorsky.” Many people at nasa thought it was a casual remark concerning some rival soviet cosmonaut. However, upon checking, there was no Gorsky in either the Russian or American Space programs. Over the years, many people questioned armstrong as to what the ‘Good luck, Mr. Gorsky’ statement meant, but Armstrong always just smiled. On July 5 1995, in Tampa Bay, Florida, while answering questions following a speech, a reporter brought up the 26-year-old question about Mr. Gorsky to Armstrong. This time he finally responded because Mr. Gorsky had died, so Neil Armstrong felt he could now answer the question. Here is the answer to “Who was Mr. Gorsky”: In 1938, when he was a kid in a small mid-western town, he was playing baseball with a friend in the backyard. His friend hit the ball, which landed in his neighbour’s yard by their bedroom window. His neighbours were Mr. and Mrs. Gorsky. As he leaned down to pick up the ball, young Armstrong heard Mrs. Gorsky shouting at Mr. Gorsky, “Sex! You want sex? You’ll get sex when the kid next door walks on the moon!” It broke the place up. Neil armstrong’s family confirmed this is a true story. Do pass it on, it’s too choice not to be shared.

exploded and the woman’s face was severely burned. In great pain, the woman was taken to hospital where the doctor told the husband that they couldn’t graft any skin from her body because she was too skinny. So the husband offered to donate some of his own skin. However, the only skin on his body that the doctor felt was suitable would have to come from his buttocks. The husband and wife agreed that they would tell no one about where the skin came from, and requested that the doctor also honour their secret. After all, this was a very delicate matter. After the surgery was completed, everyone was astounded at the woman’s new beauty. She looked more beautiful than she ever had before! All her friends and relatives just went on and on about her youthful beauty! Finally, she was at last sitting in the boat again, alone with her husband. She was overcome with emotion at the thought of his unselfish sacrifice. She said, ‘Dear, I just want to thank you for everything you did for me, there is no way I could ever repay you’ ‘My darling,’ He replied, ‘ I get all the thanks I need every time I see your mother kiss you on the cheek. ‘
Disturbing Notes A tourist in Vienna goes through a graveyard and all of a sudden he hears some music. No one is around, so he starts searching for the source. He finally locates the origin and finds it is coming from a grave with a headstone that reads: “Ludwig van Beethoven, 1770-1827.” Then he realises that the music is the Ninth Symphony, and it is being played backward! Puzzled, he leaves the graveyard and persuades a friend to return with him. By the time they arrive back at the grave, the music has changed. This time it is the Seventh Symphony, but like the previous piece, it is being played backward. Curious, the men agree to consult a music scholar. When they return with the expert,
I say there is...
the Fifth Symphony is playing, again backward. The expert notices that the symphonies are being played in the reverse order in which they were composed, the 9th, then the 7th, then the 5th. By the next day the word has spread and a throng has gathered around the grave. They are all listening to the Second Symphony being played backward. Just then the graveyard’s caretaker ambles up to the group. Someone in the group asks him if he has an explanation for the music. “Oh, no need to worry, he’s just decomposing!”
