EFI and Landa form strategic partnership

EFI and Landa Corporation have entered into a partnership agreement for the development of a digital front end (DFE) as part of Landa’s end-to-end Nanographic Printing solution. Landa’s new DFE will employ high-performance, EFI-developed Fiery technology. With this technology, the Landa DFE will offer unique, new functionality for sheet fed and web fed Landa Nanographic Printing Presses in the commercial, folding carton, point-of-sale, publishing, and flexible packaging markets. The Landa DFE will stream jobs at full printing speed for foureight colour printing with Landa Nanographic Printing Presses and will enable press operators to perform last-minute job changes on the press, to proof jobs and to print rush jobs on-the-fly. In addition, it will collect production feedback from

the presses and support closedloop colour control and inspection. The Landa DFE will support all job dynamics including static, VDP (Variable Data Printing) and EPID (Every Page Is Different) printing. The agreement brings together two pioneering businesses in the digital printing industry with the vision to fundamentally change how mainstream applications are produced. Offering a breakthrough for cost-effectively printing short to medium job lengths up to five times faster than existing digital printing presses, Landa’s revolutionary presses create demanding technical challenges for processing job data. EFI, as a worldwide leader in colour DFE and digital print workflow technology, is uniquely positioned to deliver such cutting edge technology to meet Landa’s stringent colour management, job workflow and integrated MIS demands. EFI CEO Guy Gecht and Landa Chairman and CEO Benny Landa announced the partnership to an audience of 1,000+ EFI customers during the opening session of Connect, EFI’s annual users

conference in Las Vegas. “Benny Landa is a legend in our industry, and we are excited to work with his company as its exclusive DFE technology provider,” said Gecht. “Landa Nanographic Printing Presses have potential to accelerate the migration of mainstream commercial printing and packaging to digital printing. The Landa DFE provides a proven, ultra-high-speed and wellintegrated front-end platform that Landa customers will require.” Our unique Nanographic Printing process enables us to offer offset quality digital printing and a combination of format size and throughput speeds unprecedented in the graphic arts industry,” said Benny Landa. “Reaching this remarkable and exciting goal requires partnering with best in class providers. That is the reason we chose Fiery technology and EFI as our development partner — to deliver the highest quality ultra high speed front-end platform to match the quality and performance of our Nanographic Printing Presses.” Landa selected EFI because of its technology leadership and expertise in high-speed digital systems and colour and print management. Landa customers can use the new DFE to create an end-to-end solution that naturally fits into their printing operation, whether full offset, all

digital or hybrid offset/digital. Landa Nanographic Printing Presses will be installed next to offset presses and use the same substrates. With the new DFE, Landa Nanographic Printing Presses will integrate into a printer’s existing prepress, production, and business management workflow and finishing equipment. The Landa DFE will also ensure consistency, accuracy and compliance to leading colour standards. It will enable high-speed, variable-data printing on any off the shelf B1 format (41 in./1,050 mm) substrate. As with current EFI Fiery platforms, the new DFE will integrate with EFI’s industry-leading MIS/ERP systems, as well as with leading third-party prepress and workflow platforms, for streamlined job management and processing. Fiery is the first and only DFE platform that carries a 100% perfect pass rating from industry organisation VIGC’s PDF RIP Audit. The Fiery DFE technology EFI is developing for Landa will use scalable, robust systems offering the processing power needed to drive large volumes of offset-quality digital images, including personalised/ variable data content. www.landanano.com www.efi.com

Tecna Display flies the flag

LONDON based Tecna Display, a Queen’s Award winner for Excellence in International Trade, flew the flag for British design and manufacturing at Euroshop recently. The company chose a great British icon to showcase its retail and exhibition display system at the world’s leading retail trade fair – London Transport’s Routemaster bus. Together with print specialists XG Group, they’ve created a fabulous exhibition stand that perfectly mimics the AEC Routemaster from the 1950s, at an amazing 3:4 scale. The bus has been constructed using Tecna Display’s t3Airframe, with 329 tubes and 196 connectors linking together for a total length of 152m – that’s 18 Routemaster buses in a row! The t3Airframe is an advanced modular display system which is strong, lightweight, fast and easy to build. When clad in graphics, it creates retail walls, retail plinths and “shop in shops” and POS displays. Fifty eight square

metres of fabric were needed to create the Routemaster, but the total weight of the bus comes in at around just 210kg. The bus was designed and built as close as possible to the real thing, but the inside is somewhat different, housing a meeting area, store and kitchen. The lower deck has eight clear windows, and the ‘passengers’ at the upper deck printed windows include some of Tecna Display’s staff and distribution colleagues from around the globe. Showcasing another great design innovation from Tecna owner Jonathan Evitt, the interior of the bus is illuminated by the brand new Wandlite system, a 360 degree low-voltage, bright LED light tube that is long-lasting and waterproof. Jonathan said: “We were incredibly proud to win the Queen’s Award since the last show, and wanted to show off our British credentials at this year’s Euroshop. What better way than recreating the internationally recognised Routemaster bus? “We export to more than 30 countries, and the t3 system has been granted numerous International Patents and Design Registrations worldwide. We design all our own products and manufacture them in both the UK and China. We hold the ISO 9001 quality standard and use the highest quality materials and best practice manufacturing techniques, so we can give a full lifetime guarantee on all our product. XG Group of Brackley, Northants printed and supplied the graphics for the bus. It was a very complicated production, which they carried out brilliantly.” The t3 system has been used for many high profile projects and companies worldwide, including the Brit Awards and Dyson in the UK, X Factor and Nintendo in South Africa, HSBC in Australia, Nespresso in France and the Buddha Museum in Singapore. The t3 family of products include t3Airframe, a revolutionary ‘twist-lock’ advanced modular system that holds all sorts of rigid graphics, wood, glass and more; t3Fabframe which handles tensioned fabric graphics and t3-800 – a very simple t3 system where all the extrusions are the same size and comes with free software to help anyone design and build their own display online and finally; t3Ultralite which is a plastic version of the Airframe for plinths and counters only. For more information on Tecna Display and the t3 system, visit www. tecnadisplay.com or call 0208 803 4469 For more on Wandlite, go to www.wandlite.com

Arjowiggins Graphic partners HP Indigo 10000 ARJOWIGGINS Graphic is a preferred partner for HP Indigo Commercial presses. HP Indigo uses Arjowiggins Graphic papers as one of the preferred papers used in their demo centres and trade shows on the HP Indigo 10000. HP Indigo 10000 customers use Maine Gloss and Satimat because of the product consistency and performance. This B2 digital press, which launched in Spring 2012, is a breakthrough in digital print technology, processing sheets up to 75 cm wide. It can print an output of 4,600 colour sheets per hour, which allows for over two million sheets a month. This makes the HP Indigo 10000 the most productive digital sheet-fed press currently on the market. This close business arrangement comes as part of a longstanding collaboration between HP and Arjowiggins Graphic. Recycled Papers manufactured by Arjowiggins Graphic have received the HP Indigo Commercial press certification. In addition an on-going research partnership with HP continues with the study of de-inking printed materials from HP Indigo and HP Inkjet digital presses. Since the launch of the HP Indigo 10000 in 2012, the presses have been installed all across Europe and the rest of the world. The printing

industries acceptance of this technology has been remarkable and the rapid placement of these digital presses continues to expand into the traditional commercial printing industry. John Cooper, Customer Support Director, Arjowiggins Graphic, commented: “Developing and creating papers suited for the HP Indigo Digital Commercial Presses allows us an excellent opportunity that will benefit customers and promote the importance of both virgin fibre

and recycled papers in digital printing. This way of printing has many positive aspects such as reducing energy usage, cost and emissions. So, by being able to provide compatible papers with one of the most robust designs on the markets means that we can work together, allowing HP Indigo’s customers to print high volumes at an unprecedented high speed and making non-stop printing possible.” www.arjowigginsgraphic.com

Tullis Russell supports Youth Curling TULLIS Russell, official team sponsor to Scotland’s European and World Championship teams, has extended its support this year to the “Curling’s Cool” schools programme. The initiative, which runs from September to March each year, encourages school children from all over Scotland into the sport by giving them the opportunity to learn to curl. Employee-owned premium board manufacturer Tullis Russell has been a proud sponsor of the national teams at European and World Championship level since 2007, and is now looking to support Scotland’s future generation of curlers by providing all the paper requirements for the Curling’s Cool programme literature, distributed to over 5000 young participants. Implemented by The Royal Caledonian Curling Club, the Curling’s Cool programme targets primary 6 and 7 children at a grass roots level, with qualified coaches providing sessions designed to teach children the basics of the game. Last year, 199 schools across Scotland participated in the programme, and Tullis Russell is delighted to lend its support to the initiative. Malcolm Sinclair, Export Sales Director at Tullis Russell said: “Team Scotland has performed brilliantly in recent years, and has proven its ability to compete with the very best curling teams in the world. Both teams have really put Scotland on the map in terms of success in winter sports. Our current European curlers are about to become high profile as they competed for medals at the winter Olympics in Sochi, so it is

particularly pleasing to play a part in the potential development of the Olympic champions of the future by supporting this really valuable youth initiative. “The Curling’s Cool programme is a fantastic way to introduce the younger generation to the sport, particularly one that their country has shown such great success in over the years.” Bruce Crawford, CEO of the Royal Caledonian Curling Club added: “Scotland’s best curlers have

enjoyed the support of Tullis Russell taking them to European and World championships since 2007, with 13 medal winning results including four gold. Our relationship with Tullis Russell has matured over the last six years and we are delighted this now includes support for our youth participation programme “Curling’s Cool” which benefits thousands of children playing the game throughout Scotland.” www.tullisrussell.com

New Duplo DC-646PRO DUPLO International has announced the first in a new generation of digital multifinishers, the DC-646PRO. This dynamic and user-friendly multifinisher is a new addition to Duplo’s award winning range of slitter, cutter, creasers and sits neatly between their best selling DC-645i and the incredibly productive DC-745. Duplo has designed the DC-646PRO to provide digital printers and finishers with a fully automated multifinisher that sits perfectly alongside any digital press. “We have drawn from our experiences of developing previous models in the DC-range and analysed current trends in the print industry to predict what is important to the digital printer of today and tomorrow. The result is the DC-646PRO, automated precision, redefined to the point of perfection.” says Peter Jolly, Managing Director, Duplo UK. The DC-646PRO brings automated precision and versitility to any printroom. A number of settings can be used to optimise its single camera for any press. This reads the printed barcode and registration mark then automatically sets up the tools and compensates for image drift both across and down the printed sheet. With the ability to install three optional modules simultaneously the operator has greater flexibilty to finish more applications, without having to install application specific modules for products such as business cards.

Peter says, “The DC646PRO takes automated precision to a new level. It has all the features an operator would expect from one of Duplo’s multi-finishing devices and a whole lot more. Now the operator can perforate, micro-perforate, slitscore and score both down and across the sheet, using powered tools that dynamically raise and lower the tools, creating noncontinuous strikes or skip perfs numerous times in a single pass. You’ll be amazed at the applications the DC646PRO can finish.” Duplo continue to strive to make the finishing process easy and stress free. The entire system is managed from Duplo’s PC controller software which stores an unlimited number of jobs for quick and easy recall. It also comes complete with over 80 PDF template files of the most common applications, all of which can be used to aid design, artworking and as imposition guides. The user friendly DC-646PRO will run unattended and is ideal when run by the same operator running the digital press. The DC-646PRO is truly at home in any printroom. www.duplointernational.com

Sign up to SignClip TF SIGNCLIP TF, introduced at Sign & Digital UK in 2012 is going from strength to strength. Designed for the temporary and disposable sign markets, this innovative clip firmly fixes corrugated plastic signs to poles and solves the problems associated with the self inflicted damage of cabletie fixing. Sales of this recent UK invention have reached levels which allow the manufacturer to scale up mould outputs to high hourly volumes. This substantially reduces the unit cost, allowing Wyzrds to pass on the savings to the customer through a real price reduction. TF clips will now be available at 20p each. According to Managing Director Pat Lennard, “Twinflute has long been the perfect low-cost material for temporary signage, yet there has been no tool available for flat fixing a board to a pole. SignClip TF was designed for exactly this job. Like the “Tetra pak” milk carton, this is very much the kind of product which should sell in 10s of thousands at an attractively low price and relies

on volumes for its profitability. We are determined to do our part and keep prices as keen as possible to encourage volume sales. This will give printers and sign makers a great opportunity to extend their professional service with a new profit centre. We are optimistic the SignClip TF will become the

every-day fixing method of choice for sign printers and their customers. “ Outside the UK, SignClip is going international and is about to be launched in North America. It is featured in the 2014 Catalogue of Image 1 Impact the No.1 supplier of signage materials to Sign Trade Distributors in the USA, Canada and Mexico. For Further information contact Wyzrds.Co. G-Floor – printing beneath our feet A revolutionary new product is poised to take the European flooring market by storm. Marketers have increasingly been drawn to the benefits of using the surface we walk on to promote products and services and also for ‘way-finding’ purposes. They’ve gradually been waking up to the notion that when visitors and shoppers enter a location for the first time, they often spend a great deal of time looking at the floor as a way of navigating unfamiliar surroundings and yet traditionally most directional or PoS material is sited on walls. That’s all very well, but printing bespoke graphics and advertising messages on flooring media has historically been fraught with problems. Durability, longevity and practicality have all presented challenges. A clever and arresting piece of promotional collateral for a high profile brand won’t be doing much for the brand’s reputation if it becomes scratched, scuffed or discoloured in a short space of time. Wide format media specialists, Soyang Europe now has the answer, with a remarkable new product called G-Floor, which they are confident will completely change traditional perceptions of what is possible in the field of customised flooring. The high-tech new media, originally developed in the United States, is based on a high density clear, flexible PVC substrate, capable of being printed to the underside using either UV curable or solvent inks on a grand-format printer. Because the image is printed beneath the media, the thick wear-layer protects the integrity of the graphic. G-Floor is hygienic, easily installed

and repositionable, as well as having excellent load-bearing capability, with low noise and sound absorbing characteristics. A range of different finishes provides a safe, effective and hard-wearing grip surface for a wide variety of retail, business and public space applications. There is also an option of a solid white media, suitable for surface printing in cases where print suppliers only have four colour process capabilities. Andrew Simmons, Sales Director for SOYANG Europe explained; “We believe that the sheer durability and versatility of G-Floor will turn the industry on its head. No other product currently available has such a high level of durability, or is available in such a wide range of finishes or widths. The potential for retail outlets, restaurants, cinemas, vehicle showrooms, fitness centres, hotels, exhibition halls, stages, sporting venues and airports, is genuinely fantastic. This product moves the game on from simply printing floor graphics to being able to produce Graphic Floors” Available in widths up to 3m and thicknesses to suit virtually any kind of flatbed, roll to roll or hybrid grand format printer, G-Floor offers almost limitless marketing and logistical opportunities. Simmons continues; “This really is a very cost effective product and the speedy installation process coupled with its durability and ease of repositioning make this a far more viable proposition than conventional laminate or tiled flooring alternatives. What has IPEX 2014 in store?

With the print industry in a state of rapid change, regeneration and transition, we are undoubtedly witnessing its evolution, or even revolution, as print’s traditional core technologies are complemented by digital advances and working practices. Trevor Crawford, Event Director, gives us the insight

W

HILE EVERYONE KNOWS that we’re operating in a very challenging economic climate, not everyone realises just how robust the print industry is and how printers can still prosper. Print still has a pivotal role to play in the marketing communications mix. As a result, Ipex has been strategically developed to respond to this changing landscape to become the definitive information source for the latest trends and technologies driving the industry. With Ipex’s rich educational content programme and the wealth of the latest technologies being demonstrated by over 500 international exhibitors, the event arrives at just the right time to provide the inspiration and tools to help printers make sound and informed decisions and investments that will galvanise their businesses for the future. Addressing the current issues the print industry faces today, Ipex will also provide an eclectic platform to discover first-hand the solutions required to respond positively to the changing marketplace and ensure a long term, profitable future. With new exhibitors signing up every week, be sure to keep abreast with the latest developments via www.ipex.org The current Ipex footprint covers the entire print production workflow, from concept right through to the finished product. With manufacturers and suppliers from the UK and countries from across the globe — notably from Belgium, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, The Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland and the USA — there will be a host of new launches from the diverse range of exhibitors, some of who will be participating at Ipex for the very first time. At the time of writing this, our exhibitors have confirmed over 50 new product launches, enhancements and developments, and we anticipate even more to be announced in the lead up to Ipex, and indeed at the event itself. Significantly for the first time at an international

print event, visitors will benefit from a comprehensive content programme that addresses every level and component of a print business. Whether its understanding trends and pitfalls that are shaping the industry, discovering new technologies and applications, developing robust business practices or honing operational skills and techniques, visitors from all corners of the print industry will find a takeaway idea, skill, solution or mind-set that will boost the performance of their company. The World Print Summit, a senior-level strategic thought leadership programme, will deliver a world-class line-up of speakers from the print, business, marketing and creative industries, while the Master Classes — organised by Print Future’s Neil Falconer — will focus on business growth and production efficiency for SME printers. The Future Innovations areas, organised by Gareth Ward of Print Business magazine, will showcase the printed products and technologies that are set for rapid expansion over the next few years across four sections — covering 3D printing, printed electronics, digital printing on packaging and photo products. Meanwhile visitors will be drawn to Inspiration Avenue, a gallery celebrating powerful print opportunities and impact statements that demonstrate the crucial role of print and its versatility across a number of major themes from around the world. There is also the Eco Zone — sponsored by Komori — which will educate visitors on the ecological and business-related advantages of reducing their environmental impact. For print service providers looking for the tools and know-how to evolve into a full marketing service provider, the inaugural and co-located Cross Media Production’s three theatres — covering brand management, 121 data, digital and data marketing, and publishing — will focus on how to effectively implement cross media communication strategies across multiple platforms. Ipex has also put an emphasis on the importance of injecting young blood into the industry. Designed specifically for students from secondary schools, colleges and universities, an exciting programme will run on the last day — as part of the World Print Summit — that features presentations on the power of print from innovative industry experts, a tour of Ipex, practical workshops and career advice for students. We have worked closely with the industry and our stakeholders to provide an event that is relevant, pertinent and educational. The response

in the lead up to Ipex has been extremely encouraging, with a widespread feeling of optimism for the future of the print industry; a feeling that we are confident will prove correct come March. And with the event returning to London at its new home at the ExCeL, visitors and exhibitors will be able to immerse themselves within a state of the art venue in one of the greatest business capitals in the world, as well as embracing London’s iconic culture and world famous nightlife, making Ipex much more than just a vital business trip. The Ipex team looks forward to welcoming you to London, for what promises to be the highlight in 2014 as the must-attend print event of the year.

LUMEJET TO SHOW INKLESS PRINTING TECHNOLOGY

OKI Systems UK, the UK sales division of OKI Europe Ltd, will showcase “The Brilliant Future of Printing” with the industry’s first five colour digital LED A3 printer, to be unveiled at Ipex 2014. Following the recent success of OKI Europe’s participation at Viscom in Paris, Milan and Düsseldorf, IPEX 2014 is the ideal opportunity for OKI to reveal their revolutionary new printing solutions to the Graphic Arts market in the UK. The centre-pieces of the OKI stand will be two new innovations — the award winning, ES9541 and the C931. The ES9541 is the first digital LED A3 printer in the industry to offer colour printing with the unique option of printing with a fifth colour. Users can now print on demand, the full range of process colours with the addition of a fifth spot colour in either white or clear gloss, enabling a wide variety of unique printing applications to be printed in-house, on demand. The C931 is a four colour digital LED A3 printer offering exceptional print quality and unrivalled media handling capabilities and is well suited to creative agencies and design teams where producing concepts that are as close to the proposed design as possible is essential for client approval. It can also be used as an office printer

LUMEJET and its new ultra-high-quality print technology makes its UK debut at IPEX 2014 (24th-29th March,ExCel, London). Developed over the past four years, the LumeJet inkless Digital Print Head (DPH) has moved from university concept to a disruptive print technology that is being acknowledged as ‘game changing’ by industry observers. The LumeJet technology has been designed from the ground up to exploit the proven, continuous tone quality of Silver Halide (AgX) media and its extended RGB colour gamut. This produces vibrant, smooth and colour accurate images. It also exploits the inherent micron-sized grain resolution of the media for ultra-sharp text and graphics. Altaimage in the UK was the first company in the world to invest in the LumeJet S200 printer - the first to product to incorporate LumeJet’s DPH technology. The LumeJet S200 takes 305 mm photographic roll paper for page sizes up to A3 landscape double-page spread, full bleed, including trim (1000 x 305 mm maximum) — ideal for lay flat books. Using the RGB colour space, it is ICC profiled and achieves amazing colour fidelity, including hard-to-print Pantone spot colours like reflex blue, neons, metallics and pastels, not to

mention flawless solid black. Rob King, Altaimage MD, said: “The print quality is fabulous, quite unlike anything we’ve ever seen before. Fantastic photographs, eye-popping colours, sharp text and line art - all on the same page at the same time.” He added, “Any agency using iPads for client presentations should get the prints made on it, it’s the hard-copy equivalent of a retina screen.” Looking forward to IPEX, LumeJet’s Commercial Director, Miles Bentley said: “The timing of IPEX couldn’t be better, giving us an international platform for our technology just as we have started to ramp up commercial production and are attracting a great deal of attention from companies wanting to produce premium quality pitch, presentation and photo books. The next 12 months will be a hugely exciting time for LumeJet as we grow sales of our existing machine, but also develop the technology into exciting new areas.” www.lumejet.com

FINISHING ALLIANCE HAILS LATEST EVENT AS POINTER TO IPEX

THE latest event organised by the Finishing Alliance — Showcase ‘LIVE’ — has been hailed as a great success by all parties involved. By bringing together a wide range of complementary finishing equipment Duplo, Friedheim International and Renz were able to show visitors from 30 companies both efficient and cost-effective solutions to different production processes.

Peter Jolly, Managing Director of Duplo UK, comments: “For us the event has been a fantastic success and a nice ‘stepping stone’ between London Calling 5i and IPEX. We have been able to close three orders that began at London Calling, and we now have many more opportunities newly opened that we hope to close at IPEX! It was great to show synergy between The Finishing Alliance companies. Our clients are telling us that they like the consultative approach the Alliance brings and a single point of contact for their postpress needs. As three companies we all have huge strengths, and together we are stronger.” Says Mark Bristow, Managing Director of Friedheim International: “Once again the ‘LIVE’ event highlighted what can be achieved by the Finishing Alliance in terms of the products and processes that work so well together. The quality of the products, combined with the experience and know-how of the three companies involved, is able to provide customers with a sense of security in any investment they make. It was another good opportunity to meet up with existing and potentially new customers, and very good preparation for what we are aiming to achieve at the forthcoming IPEX.” Iain Bullock, Managing Director of Renz UK said: “This event has served as a great opportunity for Renz to get some “irons in the fire” pre-IPEX, and also to finalise details with a couple of customers that we first met at London Calling 5i. The combined strength of the Alliance members showcasing their complementary finishing technologies at a structured event under one roof like this has once again proved to be a great draw for printers interested to see where the next steps in finishing may lie for their businesses.” Equipment on show during the event included the following: Duplo 500i Duetto Bookletmaking System; DC-745 Multifinisher with Integrated Folding System; Duplo Bookletmaker 150; UltraCut 240 Multifinisher; PBT Mitamax Lay-flat Book Block Builder; FKS KB4000 PUR Binder; Friedheim International; Komfi Amiga 52 Laminator; Schneider Senator 78 Guillotine; Renz Punch 500 19

Just add water Serendipity is that unexpected discovery of something really interesting or useful when you don’t even know you are looking for it. Martin Christie is impressed in what he discovered…

S

O IT WAS that a discussion of car parts lead to an investigation of a whole new angle on printing. I was talking to a friend who has an interest in importing and selling custom items like wheels and bumpers when the subject of creative colours and patterns came up. There is a process called hydrostatic printing which he had heard about, but I, to be frank, had no clue whatsoever. A little investigation, courtesy of Google, revealed some interesting videos, but very little hard information. Essentially the process is an alternative to spray painting or dipping, and gives an exceptionally smooth and accurate finish on many types of surface. It exploits the fact that water exerts an even pressure across everything it touches. A tank of water is prepared large enough to immerse the part to be treated and a sheet of film with the pattern to be transferred is laid across the surface. The item is then lowered into the tank gently through the film and the pattern is evenly merged with its surface. It looks like magic, although anyone old enough to have had an Airfix kit and put the decals on a Lancaster bomber will be familiar with the principle. It’s just on a larger and more robust scale, and able to reproduce fine detail. This is where my printer’s instincts kicked in, as there is no magic in water. The trick had to be in the film and the inks. Was this some mysterious material, or some curious new potion invented lately. No it turns out that while the film is specific for the job, and an actuating fluid and stabiliser help the process, the images are made using fairly standard pigment inkjet inks. Now some of you reading this may be already familiar with the process, although I don’t know how many copy shops have a handy water tank. It may be that you have been asked about it but didn’t have much information. So it is in the interests of spreading good practice that I am floating this concept to our print on-demand audience to gather any feedback, or raise interest. It is most often the case that developments in one area can complement those in others, and with technology moving at such a pace, and in so many directions, an overlap is almost inevitable. At the moment it seems that most people doing hydrostatic printing are buying the printed film as patterns, rather than creating them, so there is certainly an angle to explore in custom printing and design. Taking a step in another direction, however, there is a possibility that this process would benefit the fledgling 3D printing industry. Although the first tri-dimensional device was created nearly thirty years ago, commercial machines are relatively new, and the technology is still in its infancy compared to other techniques. So for some time demand, spurred on by the

popular media that has been heralding a 3D explosion, is likely to be ahead of delivery in terms of what can actually be produced. Complicated shapes can be created by the gradual build-up of layers of various materials, and lots of applications are being found in all sorts of markets. At the moment, however, colours are limited in all but the most sophisticated, and therefore extremely expensive machines. Most of the current stock of usable 3D printers use single basic colours, dictated by the material fed into them. While mixing inks to produce multi-colours is a well established and pretty accurate science, blending little balls of plastic to do the same trick may take a little time to perfect. It would seem then that hydrostatic printing may be an immediate answer to the 3D issue, being relatively straight forward in application, as well as environmentally compatible as there are no harmful chemical processes involved. Will keep you posted on any developments.

ADOBE IN THE CLOUD

It’s been a while now since Adobe moved the goalposts in terms of marketing their ubiquitous products, and went to subscription rather than straight purchase, and the debate between the pros and cons still rattles on across the various user forums. While it should always be considered that other software is available, the simple fact is that the Adobe option is so popular with users that it is the most practical choice when dealing with a multitude of customers. An individual can afford to have an open mind and use any one of a number of photo editing and design packages available, and in the interests of fairness I have tried a few to keep up to date with things. Regardless of how good they are, the issue is usually that they may all do the same job, but slightly differently. And that’s the rub. Adobe has gone to great lengths to keep the look and operation of something like Photoshop familiar over the years, despite all of its many generations, so the user is used to its controls. The current version is packed with novelty but still retains some old familiar tools and actions exactly as they were a decade ago. And this continuity is an important factor in the universal reach of the product. There is also the very practical issue of staff training in a working environment, in that many applicants will be familiar with at least some Adobe products from school or college, and that teaching them an unfamiliar programme with limited use is not a career option for anyone aiming to progress in the industry. I have sung the praises of Corel before, and this is a very powerful application in both digital imaging and vector creation. It has the advantage that it can deal with most types of image file, as well as import design packages. But I have to admit that while it does what it does well, because it does it differently, it can be confusing in use.

March 2014 | QUICK PRINT PRO | DIGITAL IMAGING | 23

Once upon a time creatives used to pride themselves in using Quark XPress for their master pieces, but although it still exists (and version 10 is the current one) it is about as rare as a floppy disc or a zip drive. The latter of course was very useful because it could hold lots (at the time) of information and was editable – useful if you were using a program like Quark which had external links to images, fonts and the link. If you were a really top designer you had a zip that could hold as much as 250Mb! One of the constant issues with applications like that, including Adobe’s InDesign, was files or fonts that hadn’t been collected for output and were therefore missing. Quark was apparently particularly prone to this because of licencing matters over fonts which could not be transferred or embedded. All of these niggling problems were supposed to be overcome by the Portable Digital Format, the PDF, intended to be a universal digital transfer formula that everyone would read and therefore be able to print, consistently. If only life were that simple. I have raised the PDF compatibility issue before, and it isn’t going away. If anything there seem to be more problems possibly caused by the files being saved by a variety of applications, and with uncertain default settings. Generally the problems seem to be caused by layers, fonts and other editable information contained within the file that might not be immediately apparent when viewed on the screen. Dean Cook, from The Magazine Production Company, added, “The main issue here Martin, is that simply saving a PDF from Word, for example, isn’t the same as exporting an optimised compliant CMYK PDF for commercial printing from InDesign. Many variants of PDF files can be exported depending on output intent but, unfortunately, the novice user doesn’t understand which isn’t helped when programs which can’t be set correctly for commercial output. Although the point is to offer great flexibility from a single document format, it is offered in many guises that can affect final output which is a different matter altogether.” Given that the whole point of the PDF was that you could open it simply in Acrobat Reader and press print, the fact that it may contain buried treasure that may completely wreck the process is unfortunate to say the least. If the only way to ensure there are no issues is to rasterise it before sending to print, then this becomes time consuming, especially if you are dealing with a multi-page document. There is the further problem that if dealing with a digital file provided by a customer you may not see an issue until the job is either printed or collected by the customer. So this is a matter of both time and money, further underlining the importance of checking and proof reading where there is any chance of uncertainty. Having the right tools to sort the job brings us back to Adobe and the fact that in a working bureau you cannot afford not to have the last software on a least one operating system, and depending upon general workload. You don’t have to have every machine tooled up to specifications if you don’t need to. The advantage to the business user of Adobe’s subscription system – once you have worked your way through all the various options – is that you can effectively pick and mix the programmes you want on the machines you chose. Do you need InDesign, for example, on more than one computer? Do you need Illustrator at all? It very much depends on usage and workflow, but there is certainly a lot of stuff up there in Adobe’s Creative cloud you may never need. In this context I can recommend the combination of Photoshop and Lightroom 5 which is one of the current options, and these two together are much under exploited in the print shop in my experience. Photoshop has Bridge (and now mini-bridge) which is not merely useful for viewing multiple files in a folder, but can display all the digital information you need at a glance, like resolution, dimensions, colour space, even time and place of creation if available.

This can warn you of potential problems long before printing. Among other neat tricks, Bridge can create a multi page PDF in output by selecting individual files, be they JPGs, TIFs or the like. This output can be customised to place multiple images on a page automatically, with margins, rather than place them in an In Design template one by one. Bridge creates a catalogue of archived images by default, which can be a little memory hungry if you are dealing with lots of images, but could be useful for recovering files that have been mislaid or deleted. You can also apply any saved Photoshop actions in Bridge to batch process files. It’s one of these tool’s that once you start exploring, you will find more use for. Similarly, Lightroom has an important role to play, especially in dealing with lots of images. It works differently to Photoshop in that you import and export files, and can apply editing without affecting the originals. It only handles pixel-based files, so no PDFs or vectors, but in an environment where customers regularly provide portable memory with huge amounts of data, it’s very handy for sorting out the content. You can view it all and chose what to import so you are only handling what you need. Again, all the digital file information is on display, so you know what you are dealing with. Like Bridge, you can use Lightroom to lay up several images on a page or pages, and can save a template for regular tasks, including the paper stock and printer output. There is a basic caption option, but no real text adding potential, so you don’t have the equivalent editing possibilities as Photoshop itself. But as a quick file handling device for most situations it is perfect. Selected files can be edited in Photoshop from Lightroom, so using the two in combination is the most efficient way to handle lots of images, especially if changes of size, colour and such like actions are to be tackled. Next month I’ll be listing some tips on workflow that I have picked up using them on an almost daily basis which some of you may find helpful. I’ll also be reporting from the Photography Show at the NEC, March 1st-4th March.

THE Premier Paper Group and its customers, have planted in excess of 1,500 trees at The Prince William of Gloucester Barracks (PWOGB), home to the Royal Logistics Corps Territorial Army and a partner of The Woodland Trust. Premier provides a unique opportunity for its customers to capture the CO2 emissions from the manufacture and distribution of their paper purchases and to invest in UK-based carbon projects. “For every order placed, we can calculate the amount of CO2 generated in the production and delivery of the paper. Customers can then elect to capture the associated carbon and the amount is added as a separate item to their invoice,” said Environmental Sales Director Chris Stanyon To date, the merchant’s contributions have supported the planting of 160 hectares of native trees including Ash, Aspen, Oak and Rowan, at several of the Woodland Trust’s Carbon Removal projects that comply with the Government’s Woodland Carbon Code. Taking this commitment to environmental protection one step further, Premier invited customers nationwide to join staff in planting 1,500 trees at PWOGB. The tree planting took place on 28th November. More than 65 of Premier’s customers joined staff from each of the merchant’s 16 regional branches, all rolling up their sleeves to plant the trees. Situated on the outskirts of Grantham, a market town in Lincolnshire, the barracks also recognises the potential of tree planting as a way to strengthen relationships between civilian and military communities. The Woodland Trust is helping them achieve this through a partnership agreement, with the Trust planting trees under license or lease and handing back established woodland to the landowner after 10-15 years. The Trust enhanced the appeal of the planting by making it a part of the Jubilee Woods project, an ambitious initiative to plant six million trees to celebrate the 2012 Royal Diamond Jubilee. The Woodland Trust looks after over 1,200 woodlands covering in excess of 60,000 acres throughout the UK. Dr Nick Atkinson, a carbon specialist at The Woodland Trust said: “Working in partnership with businesses like Premier Paper and landowners like the Ministry of Defence, is allowing us to create large areas of new native woodland, which over time will remove hundreds of thousands of tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and lock it away permanently.” The Trust estimates that each hectare of woodland planted at PWOGB will lock up approximately 400 tonnes of C02. “Premier Paper is leading the way, demonstrating its commitment to environmental responsibility and a tree planting event like this allows its customers to see for themselves and be a part of what they are supporting by participating in the Carbon Capture programme,” he said. www.paper.co.uk THE Woodland Trust is the UK’s leading charity championing native woods and trees. It has 300,000 members and supporters. The Trust has three key aims: i) to enable the creation of more native woods and places rich in trees ii) to protect native woods, trees and their wildlife for the future iii) to inspire everyone to enjoy and value woods and trees. Established in 1972, the Woodland Trust now has over 1,000 sites in its care covering approximately 20,000 hectares (50,000 acres). Access to its sites is free: www.woodlandtrust.org.uk

Two sides report LIFE Cycle Assessments are often used to support environmental arguments. But there are dangers, warns a new report from Two Sides Many leading companies, including banks, utilities and telecommunications organisations, are urging their customers to go paperless with claims that electronic communications save trees, are “greener” than print or otherwise protect the environment. Research shows that ‘50% of US respondents and 58% of UK respondents do not believe, feel misled or question “go green – go paperless” claims used to promote e-billing.’ Two Sides asserts that all claims should be supported by sound and verifiable evidence and has released a detailed three page report on ‘Understanding generic calculators, Life Cycle Assessment’s and risks to corporate reputation’. The report highlights the ‘misleading’ nature of these claims and states that the majority of them lack specificity and rarely cite substantiating data while implying an environmental benefit, which means they fail to meet the basic criteria for acceptable environmental marketing as outlined in most published laws, guidelines and standards Two Sides focuses on why a generic LCA is not designed to substantiate a marketing claim and reviews the best practices for environmental marketing. The report also provides an important starting point in understanding the different roles of generic and full Life Cycle Assessments. Both electronic and paper communications have environmental consequences. The impact of each is broad and complex, and cannot be well understood without careful examination of a specific use scenario. The report looks at the digital life cycle and asserts that ‘a responsible approach to understanding the environmental impact of each of these mediums would reflect careful examination while also seeking to reduce the footprint of both’. www.twosides.info

Welcome to all our new litho printers that have recently ‘gone digital’

YOUR positive print investment will move you forward and if you had not made the leap? Well you would be back where you started, so welcome onboard the QPP express. For a printer it is always difficult to know when and how much to invest in a print business to improve its productivity, quality, efficiency and profitability. Many conventional printers faced this simple question; “I’m litho, how heavily should I get into digital and how quickly. Do I go full tilt straight away or just feel my way in?” For others it’s upgrading older print engines or moving into wide format, all with new front end challenges, but the finishing opportunities are endless. Another question to consider in this investment conundrum is “How can I exceed my customers expectations so that they settle the bill happily and stay a loyal customer?” Several best practices are being set with the advent of digital...

Firstly, customers are being seen and spoken to quickly, advised well and then quoted immediately. This is just the beginning. Work is now being completed faster than a litho customer could have imagined and is ready to pick up in shorter lead times. Offering a proof of their impending job for checking within minutes of the artwork being designed is well received and print deliveries can always be ready on time. There are now so many ways the digital age can help a printer to offer his customer something far more than in the past. Ipex is upon us and now is the time to ask some questions of ourselves and look at what equipment can really help us move our businesses forward... Check out this video on www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmA_lSg_eNU it will start you thinking about customers. I recommend you spend a few minutes to discover one of many ways we can all move our print businesses forward.

Hands on appraisals WELCOME to the QPP beta test centre report page, where various members of our road test team share their findings on new kit and services aimed at the quickest part of the print industry. Real scenario print production makes our case studies fun for our test jokeys, as we all earn our crust through printing for others, and have an inbred love of all things print. Sometimes the enlightenment is not just in the kit being clever but a new process can improve the way we produce print for our customers. More profit opportunities through new products is our best discovery for sharing. We presently have our hands on some excellent test equipment as well as some design creativity and delivery breakthroughs. Starting firstly with a new idea on how to mount soft signage. Our own shop, like many of our readers, have made a pigs ear of putting up hole punched laminated posters with cable ties. Correx boards have even been gaffer taped! Thankfully we have been introduced to Pat Lenard of www.wyzrds.

Neopost DS-35, your friendly assistant

MORE printers are adding value to their services by following up the print journey from design to doormat. Have you ever wondered what your customers do with the boxes of print you have produced for them? Delivering communications to the point of need is where the money is. Where the print production is price sensitive, the finishing options are a bolt on ‘up sale’. We all archive different prices for certain jobs for specific customs, all variable but hopefully profitable. Now add on say five pence per copy for folding and inserting into envelopes and you will have secured a customer and contributed more profit for the bank and the tax man to fight over. Securing your print customer base has never been so easy, by just asking “what are you going to do with your print now it is printed?” By offering to complete the print journey your customer will save a lot of time and miss running into a mailing house that one day will offer to produce the print too! Now what to do with your extra five pence per print, plus some healthy profit, through the economies of scale, supplying the envelopes. Firstly you need to invest in some ambidextrous kit that will take your print to the next dimension,

folding, inserting and sealing. To be frank you should be running up to the post office too and then you will never have to see your customer, just take payment over the phone. We have discovered a convenient and efficient solution for folding and inserting your customer’s mail. From invoices to promotions, a folder inserter is just the job to precisely and professionally fold, insert and seal your mail items at the touch of a button. The Neopost DS-35 folder inserter is the ideal candidate for the job. Extremely user friendly, the DS-35 can also free up valuable staff time to get on with more productive and profitable tasks, as well as bringing all these benefits to your business: • Process 1,350 items of mail an hour – 13 times faster than a member of staff can • Help you make the most of the lowest Royal Mail rates by folding A4 items to fit into C5 or DL envelopes • Boost sales by automatically adding offers and promotional materials into mail

• Easy operation via a full colour touch screen, plus 15 memory settings for quick set up and operation. The DS-35 can handle a wide range of documents, envelopes and even inserts or business reply envelopes. All more print products to offer your customers. Choose between four fold types according to print requirements. The automatic cascade feed function rules out down time, thus optimising productivity. The manual feed function allows you to feed up to five sheets for each mailing project, stapled or not. The DS-35 is fully controlled from its new user interface, a modern colour touch screen with only two buttons. The foldaway catch tray allows an even smaller footprint. Easy to use with a software guide to adjust the settings, most jobs can be stored in its 15-job memory Neopost’s double document control prevents double feeding. The DS-35 sensors allow coloured paper to pass and are not activated by dust allowing complete reliability. The system guarantees that you will always send the right document to the right recipient. With only one button to open the machine, there is quick and easy access to all parts of the folding area and paper path. Check out all the FAB features and benefits at www.neopost.co.uk

Rapid Stapling from Elmstock Show your Customers the Way with Personalised Maps OUR own print business in Brighton is constantly investing in new kit, often in the essential equipment to assist our daily production. Quality is paramount as reliability delivers up time and happy customers. We recently needed a stapling upgrade in our off line finishing department. Something safe, user friendly and functional for varied applications, maybe one of those arm ache saving pedal operated ones? We did some research and opted for a solution that is three staplers in one: flat and saddle with loop optional extra too. “The best book stapler we have ever had”, high praise indeed but not from our demonstration suite? We know when a product is just right for the print service supplier industry as someone from our own print shop ‘borrows’ our dem kit to produce real jobs next door more efficiently, and they have no plans to give it back. The Rapid 106E is a modern 2 in 1 electric stapler system. Can handle both flat, saddle stapling and loop* stapling (*additional accessories required). It can staple brochures or folders, with the work table folded down, as speedily and easily as it staples loose sheets or stacks of paper in the flat position. The Rapid 106E can also be linked with 2, 3 or 4 heads for greater production capacity. Take advantage of the Elmstok latest special offer, they are including 10,000 genuine Rapid staples FREE! - (1 box Rapid 66/6 staples and 1 box Rapid 66/8 staples. As a piece of homework check out how much everyone else is charging for turning basic print into finished books and booklets. At 10% of the print price this professional kit from Elmstok will pay for itself very rapidly. Check out www.elmstok.co.uk 01945 463434

CREATIVE impact and personal relevance are two key factors that contribute to effective direct mail campaigns that get higher response rates. One way to get noticed is to use personalised maps in a direct mail campaign to show a relevant location or route. A personalised map can show a route from the customer to a store, a local place of interest or multiple relevant locations in the neighbourhood of the recipient. It can pick out the best route to take on foot or by car and it can highlight the destination with a brand logo or other image. These are just some of the situations in which sending someone a mailer including a uniquely personalised map can be useful: finding an out-of-town or newly-opened retail store; making a long distance journey to an exhibition or business conference; locating a rural holiday destination, leisure centre or heritage site; and showing the nearest place to service your car, buy a mobile phone or get a bank loan High quality, personalised maps are easy to produce using a service operated by a German company called locr. Whether you want a few hundred or many thousands, the costs are competitive and don’t involve any copyright license fees because locr uses highly accurate, but freely available geodata to create printable maps. All you have to do is prepare an address list in an Excel file, send it to locr and they do the rest. They will return the maps in a matter of a few hours as high quality jpg images ready to use in direct mailers. Tony Hodgson from locr will also be at IPEX on 25-27 March. In the meantime you can try out personalised maps right now. Take a look at the website, http://maps.locr.com or email uk@locr.com

A BREED OF THEIR OWN Three salesmen were overheard chatting. One was telling the others about the difficulty they were having in attempting to start a family. He said, “I think my wife must be impregnable.” The second said,” that’s not the right word, she is inconceivable”. To which the third replied, “You are both wrong she is unbearable.”

WISHFUL THINKING A man and an ostrich walk into a restaurant. The waitress asks, “What will it be?” The man replied “a burger and a coke.” “And you?” “I’ll have the same,” the ostrich replies. They finish their meal and pay. “That will be £4.50,” The man reached into his pocket and pulled out the exact amount. They do this every day till Friday. “The usual?” she asked. “No, today is Friday. I’ll have steak and a coke.” “Me too.” says the ostrich. They finish and pay. “That will be £10.95” The man reached in and pulls out the exact amount again just like all week. The waitress was dumb-founded. “How is it that you always have the exact amount?” “Well,” says the man. “I was cleaning my loft and I found a dusty lamp. I rubbed it and a genie appeared.” Wow!” said the waitress. “What did you wish for?” “I asked that when I needed to pay for something, the exact amount would appear in my pocket.” “Amazing! Most people would ask for a million pounds. But what’s with the ostrich?” “Well,” said the man. “I also asked for a bird with long legs.”

CRAZY TAXI A passenger in a taxi leaned over to ask the driver a question and tapped him on the shoulder. The driver screamed, lost control of the cab, nearly hit a bus, drove up over the curb, and stopped just inches from a large plate glass window. For a few moments everything was silent in the cab, and then the still shaking driver said, “I’m sorry but you scared the daylights out of me.” The frightened passenger apologised to the driver and said he didn’t realise a mere tap on the shoulder could frighten him so much. The driver replied, “No, no, I’m sorry, it’s entirely my fault. Today is my first day driving a cab. I’ve been driving a hearse for the last 25 years.”

THOUGHTFUL BLONDE A young ventriloquist was on tour and one night he did a show in a small town. With his dummy on his knee, he started going through his usual run of dumb blonde jokes. Suddenly, a blonde woman in the fourth row stood on her chair and started shouting. “I’ve heard enough of your stupid blonde jokes. What makes you think you can stereotype blonde women that way? What does the colour of a woman’s hair have to do with her worth as a human being? It’s men like you who keep women like me from being respected at work and in the community, and from reaching our full potential as people. It’s people like you that make others think that all blondes are dumb! You and your kind continue to perpetuate discrimination against not only blondes, but women in general... and all, pathetically, in the name of humour!” When the embarrassed ventriloquist began to apologise the blonde stood up again and yelled, “You stay out of this! I’m talking to that little shit on your lap.”

WISHFUL THINKING Please grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway, the good fortune to run into the ones I do, and the eyesight to tell the difference.

EXPERIENCE TELLS 1 I started out with nothing, and I still have most of it. 2 My wild oats have turned into prunes and All Bran. 3 I finally got my head together, now my body is falling apart. 4 Funny, I don’t remember being absent-minded … 5 All reports are in; life is now officially unfair. 6 If all is not lost, where is it? 7 It is easier to get older than it is to get wiser. 8 Some days you’re the dog; some days you’re the hydrant. 9 I wish the buck stopped here; I sure could use a few. 10 Kids in the back seat cause accidents. 11 Accidents in the back seat cause kids. 12 It’s hard to make a comeback when you haven’t been anywhere. 13 Only time the world beats a path to your door is when you’re in the bathroom. 14. If God wanted me to touch my toes, he would have put them on my knees.

15 When I’m finally holding all the cards, why does everyone decide to play chess? 16 It’s not hard to meet expenses... they’re everywhere. 17 The only difference between a rut and a grave is the depth. 18 These days I spend a lot of time thinking about the hereafter... I go somewhere to get something, and then wonder what I’m here after.

SALES TARGETS A beautiful, sexy, good looking lady was sitting next to a sales guy in a plane... The lady said to him ‘ Can you help me remove something from my breasts please? ‘The exciting young salesman replied, ‘Wow! It will be my pleasure... So what is it?’ “Your Eyes, idiot!”

THE JOKER, THE ROGUE, THE ICON. Here’s what Jack Nicholson has had to say... Once you’ve been really ‘bad’ in a movie, there’s a certain kind of fearlessness you develop. I only take Viagra when I’m with more than one woman. In my last year of school, I was voted Class Optimist and Class Pessimist. Looking back, I realise I was only half right. There’s so much darn porn out there, I never got out of the house. Financially, I’ve lost money and made money, but I know my way around financially. One thing I really feel is that if I could think of a short film, I would be very proud of myself. I love shorts. Frankly, I got into the movies because I like the movies a lot. With my sunglasses on, I’m Jack Nicholson. Without them, I’m fat and 60. Just let the wardrobe do the acting. Beer, it’s the best damn drink in the world. People who speak in metaphors should shampoo my pants. There is no way you can get people to believe you on screen if they know who you really are through television. There’s only two people in your life you should lie to... the police and your girlfriend. In this industry, there are only two ways up the ladder. Rung by rung or claw your way to the top. It’s sure been tough on my nails. I learned a long time ago in Hollywood that the only person I should vote for is myself. Our generation are the new old. I remember what someone of 60 looked like when I was a kid. They didn’t look like me. Well, a girlfriend once told me never to fight with anybody you don’t love.

Well, a younger woman is a type, but not necessarily a type for me. And what is a younger woman? I mean, I’m pretty old. Almost everyone is younger. What’s beautiful is all that counts, pal. That’s ALL that counts. ‘My mother never saw the irony in calling me a son-of-a-bitch.’ Thanks Jack

BLIND DATE An 85-year-old widow went on a blind date with a 90-year-old man. When she returned to her daughter’s house later that night, she seemed upset. “What happened, Mother?” the daughter asked. “I had to slap his face three times!” “You mean he got fresh?” “No,” she answered. “I thought he was dead!”

MORE WISHFUL THINKING A man was walking along a California beach and stumbled across an old lamp. He picked it up and rubbed it and out popped a genie. The genie said, “OK. You released me from the lamp, blah blah blah. This is the fourth time this month and I’m getting a little sick of these wishes so you can forget about three. You only get one wish!” The man sat and thought about it for a while and said, “I’ve always wanted to go to Hawaii but I’m scared to fly and I get very seasick. Could you build me a bridge to Hawaii so I can drive over there to visit?” The genie laughed and said, “That’s impossible. Think of the logistics of that! How would the supports ever reach the bottom of the Pacific? Think of how much concrete...how much steel!! No, think of another wish.” The man said OK and tried to think of a really good wish. Finally, he said, “I’ve been married and divorced four times. My wives always said that I don’t care and that I’m insensitive. So, I wish that I could understand women... know how they feel inside and what they’re thinking when they give me the silent treatment... know why they’re crying, know what they really want when they say ‘nothing’... know how to make them truly happy...” The genie asked, “Do you want that bridge with two lanes or four?”

YOU’RE ‘AVIN A LAUGH A printer, a salesman and an engineer walk into a bar and the bartender says, “What is this, some kind of joke?”

ADVICE LINES A man walked into a therapist’s office looking very depressed. ‘Doc, you’ve got to help me. I can’t go on like this.’ ‘What’s the problem?’ the doctor inquired. ‘Well, I’m 35 years old and I still have no luck with the ladies. No matter how hard I try, I just seem to scare them away.’ ‘My friend, this is not a serious problem. You just need to work on your selfesteem. Each morning, I want you to get up and run to the bathroom mirror. Tell yourself that you are a good person, a fun person, and an attractive person. But, say it with real conviction. Within a week you’ll have women buzzing all around you.’ The man seemed content with this advice and walked out of the office a bit excited. Three weeks later he returned with the same downtrodden expression on his face. ‘Did my advice not work?’ asked the doctor. ‘Oh, it worked alright. For the past several weeks I’ve enjoyed some of the best moments in my life with the most fabulous looking women.’ ‘So, what’s your problem?’ ‘I don’t have a problem, but my wife does.’

TRUE STUFF “ Tom’s wife was delighted when he told her he’d finally secured a job in the local bowling alley. ‘Ten pin?’ she asked. ‘No’, replied Tom, ‘I think it’s permanent.’ “ It’s always hard to explain puns to kleptomaniacs...They always take things literally. ” “ I went to the grocer’s today and picked up an iceberg lettuce. I said to the shop assistant, ‘Why is it that these just seem to be getting smaller and smaller?’ ‘Global warming,’ he replied “ I’m 33, but this year I got ID’d buying fine wine in Marks & Spencer. The guy said, ‘Have you got any proof you’re over 18?’ I said, ‘Yes, I’m in Marks & Spencer.’

TEACHER: Donald, what is the chemical formula for water?

BUYER BEWARE A salesman is standing in a long line at the box office. Suddenly, he feels a pair of hands kneading his shoulders, back, and neck. The salesman turns around. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?” “I’m a chiropractor, and I’m just keeping in practice while I’m waiting in line.” “Well, I’m a salesman, but you don’t see me screwing the guy in front of me, do you?”

BLIND DATE, AMERICAN STYLE Joe took his blind date to the carnival. “What would you like to do first, Kim?” asked Joe. “I want to get weighed,” she said. They walked over to the weight guesser, and he guessed 120 pounds. She got on the scale. It read 117, so she won a prize. The couple then went on the Ferris wheel. When the ride was over, Joe again asked Kim what she would like to do. “I want to get weighed,” she said. Since they had been there before, the weight guesser guessed her correct weight, and Joe lost his dollar. The couple walked around the carnival and again he asked where to next. “I want to get weighed,” she responded. Joe decided Kim was weird and took her home early, dropping her off with a handshake. Her roommate, Laura, asked her about the blind date, “How’d it go?” Kim responded, “Oh, Waura, it was wousy.”

MORE SHORTS YOU HAVE SENT IN… I used to think the brain was the most important organ. Then I thought, look what’s telling me that. The midget fortune teller who kills his customers is a small medium at large. A farmer in the field with his cows counted 196 of them, but when he rounded them up he had 200. What is Bruce Lee’s favourite drink? Wataaaaah!

DONALD: H I J K L M N O.

You kill vegetarian vampires with a steak to the heart. There was a prison break and I saw a midget climb up the fence. As he jumped down he sneered at me and I thought, well that’s a little condescending. If you want to catch a squirrel just climb a tree and act like a nut. A magician was walking down the street and turned into a grocery store. Why don’t you ever see hippopotamus hiding in trees? Because they’re really good at it. Did you hear about the Mexican train killer? He had locomotives. How does NASA organise their company parties? They planet. Why can’t you hear a pterodactyl go to the bathroom? Because the “P” is silent. What kind of shoes do ninjas wear? Sneakers. Did you hear about the new corduroy pillows? They’re making headlines everywhere! Why was six afraid of seven? Because seven was a well known six offender. What time is it when you have to go to the dentist? Tooth-hurtie. My friend recently got crushed by a pile of books, but he’s only got his shelf to blame. What did Jay-Z call his girlfriend before they got married? Feyoncé. Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like banana. What do you call dangerous precipitation? A rain of terror. What’s the best part about living in Switzerland? Not sure, but the flag is a big plus. Two fish are in a tank. One turns to the other and asks “How do you drive this thing?” Why didn’t the lifeguard save the hippie? Because he was too far out man! I wondered why the baseball was getting bigger. Then it hit me. Atheism is a non-prophet organisation. Just went to an emotional wedding. Even the cake was in tiers.

TEACHER: What are you talking about?

When you get a bladder infection, urine trouble. I wrote a song about a tortilla. Well actually, it’s more of a wrap. What do you call a dinosaur with an extensive vocabulary? A thesaurus. PMS should just be called ovaryacting. Marketing companies should use chromosomes in advertisements because sex cells. Learn sign language, it’s very handy. You want to hear a pizza joke? Never mind, it’s pretty cheesy. What is the difference between ignorance and apathy? I don’t know, and I don’t care. Dry erase boards are remarkable. Dwarfs and midgets have very little in common. Did you hear about the guy whose whole left side was cut off? He’s all right now I’m reading a book about antigravity. It’s impossible to put down. The other day I held the door open for a clown. I thought it was a nice jester. It’s not that the man did not know how to juggle, he just didn’t have the balls to do it. I couldn’t quite remember how to throw a boomerang, but eventually it came back to me. Did you hear about the guy who got hit in the head with a can of soda? He was lucky it was a soft drink. I used to have a fear of hurdles, but I got over it. There was a sign on the lawn at a drug re-hab center that said ‘Keep off the Grass’. Police were called to a day care centre where a three-year-old was resisting a rest.

LAST SHORT JOKE A husband and wife are trying to set up a new password for their computer. The husband puts, “Mypenis,” and the wife falls on the ground laughing because on the screen it says, “Error. Not long enough.”

DONALD: Yesterday you said it’s H to O.
