Mimaki inks achieve OEKO-TEX Accreditation MIMAKI has attained the OEKO-TEX accreditation for direct skin contact for its Sb300 series dye sublimation inks and Sb53 sublimation transfer inks. The OEKO-TEX criteria catalogue provides manufacturers in the textile and clothing industry with a scientifically based standard benchmark for the evaluation of potentially harmful substances in textiles. OEKO-TEX approved inks are suitable to finish skin-friendly clothing and other textiles for end users. This certificate therefore constitutes an important decisionmaking element when purchasing inks for textile production. As a pioneering manufacturer, Mimaki has been awarded OEKOTEX Standard 100, product class Il. This concerns textiles and inks which, when used as intended, have a large part of their surface in direct contact with the skin, e.g. underwear, bed linen, terry cloth items, shirts, blouses etc. The independent testing and certification system for textile products from all stages of manufacture confirms the inks have met the human ecological requirements of the standard for products with direct contact to skin.

The certification shows the inks fulfil the requirements of Annex XVII of REACH as well as the American requirement regarding total content of lead in children’s articles. “We were already well aware of the business-winning value of the inks but are delighted that Nissenken Quality Evaluation Center has awarded them the OEKO-TEX Standard 100,” comments Mike Horsten, General Manager Marketing EMEA at Mimaki Europe. “Customers

can now use the inks confidently and safe in the knowledge they are approved for direct skin contact.” “Our digital textile printing capabilities have already hit a number of catwalks. This certification means even more designers can take a closer look at how printing can add creative value to their collections.” The inks can be used on the following Mimaki systems: TS5001800, TX500-1800DS, TX500-1800B, CJV150-107, 130 & 160, CJV300-130

& 160, JV150-130 & 160, JV300-130 & 160, JV5-320DS, TS3-1600, TS51600AMF, TS34-1800A and TPC-1000. Horsten concludes: “After a very successful participation at Heimtextil in Germany, this industry seal of approval demonstrates just how far-reaching digital print can be. It is an endorsement of our continuous efforts to optimise our portfolio and more notably our digital print solutions.” www.hybridservices.co.uk

Epson and Mercedes AMG Petrona F1 Team

EPSON has announced a long-term global partnership with the 2014 FIA Formula One World Champions, the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team. Epson will become an official team partner of MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS, providing its expertise in the product areas of inkjet printers, scanners, 3LCD projectors and wearables, including smart glasses and health/sports sensing products. The Epson logo will be visible on the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS race cars, along with branding on the helmet visors

and race suits of the team’s drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, in a new livery for the 2015 season that will be revealed by MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS when Formula One testing begins on February 1. “We are extremely proud to enhance our global brand profile by becoming an official partner of the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team,” said Epson President Minoru Usui. “The partnership aligns two world-renowned champion brands committed to the relentless pursuit of innovation, the attainment

of global leadership positions and the creation of products and services that continue to exceed expectations and emotionally engage stakeholders worldwide.” Toto Wolff, Head of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport commented: “We are delighted to welcome Epson to the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team as our preparations for the 2015 season gather pace. It is always a pleasure to work with forward-thinking companies and Epson’s products are a natural fit for our race and manufacturing operations. Epson’s use of innovative technology to deliver performance is perfectly aligned to what we strive to achieve in Formula One and we will be working closely with Epson to showcase these innovations and increase global awareness of their brand and products. We look forward to the season ahead and many successful years as partners.”

The locations of the twenty 2015 Formula One race events closely reflect Epson’s global footprint and will provide unique and highly visible platforms for showcasing its advanced technologies and accelerating growth by deepening customer relationships worldwide. The global partnership also brings together two organisations with a strong commitment to minimising environmental impact. Epson, for example, aims to achieve a 90% reduction in CO2 emissions versus the environmental impacts of current and future operations by 2050, partially by reducing the environmental impact of its manufacturing processes but also by reducing the impact of its products during use. The Championship-winning MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS F1 W05 F1 Hybrid car, raced by the team in 2014, was over 30% more fuel efficient than its predecessor and has also delivered real-world benefits in the S 500 Hybrid Plug In and other Mercedes-Benz road cars. www.global.epson.com

The Pen Warehouse winning start to the year

THE Pen Warehouse has made a winning start to the year with the award for Supplier of the Year (£2m and over) at the British Promotional Merchandise Association (BPMA) Awards dinner. The UK supplier of promotional writing instruments also picked up the Constant Contact Digital Awards Website of The Year 2014 for its innovative No-Minimum bespoke Ecommerce website. The No-Minimum bespoke Ecommerce site gives distributors the opportunity to increase revenue by selling small order personalised products and gifts

online to consumers, sole traders, franchisees and small businesses. Competitive prices for products allow distributors to undercut VistaPrint and still make a margin. The Pen Warehouse has developed a number of ground-breaking new services and products to offer distributors more product choice, a competitive price point and no minimum order quantities through the No-Minimum trade website. Investment in new technology has enabled the company to offer exclusive products with unsurpassed print quality, while staff development

has helped to create an award-winning customer service team. Managing Director Neil Cleere said: “We’re thrilled to be named Supplier of the Year once again and would like to thank everyone who voted for us. We recognise the pressures faced by distributors in light of increased competition from on-line retailers, and will continue to develop exclusive products and innovative services in 2015.” The Pen Warehouse is a family firm which designs and supplies an extensive range of writing instruments and offers Europe’s largest range of full colour promotional pens, pencils and accessories. It is one of the few trade only suppliers to offer exclusive products designed in-house, providing a point of difference for distributors of promotional writing instruments. www.pens.co.uk

Antalis passes PrintIT! baton to Balreed PROSKILLS is delighted that paper and packaging distributor Antalis has made a sizeable contribution to the PassIT! campaign for their month of January! Their generous donation will now go directly into the PrintIT! programme helping to fund school visits to industry, the development of new career materials and content for the student work books. Belinda Kelly, Marketing Manager at Antalis commented: “We’re delighted our donation contributes to such a worthwhile cause and gives students a real feel for the variety of career opportunities in the print and paper industry.” The PrintIT! team is in awe of the efforts so far from the partners, as Antalis handed over the fundraising baton to Balreed for the month of February. Balreed tested their limits by attempting to complete an endurance run on Friday 27th of February. On February 24th they hosted Cornwallis Academy, on an all expenses paid visit to their Maidstone HQ offices. Their visit included a talk and tour of the premises and the students learned first-hand the ins and outs of a large printing company. Gary Downey, Group Marketing Director at Balreed says: “We are very pleased to be supporting the PrintIT! initiative, it’s a great opportunity to open our doors to a local school and help them understand how digital print can be an exciting and rewarding industry to get involved in. We have just been appointed as official Print Partner to the Virgin Money London Marathon so we thought an endurance running challenge in the middle of the office would be a very appropriate way for us to raise funds for PrintIT! and raise the heart rates of staff at our Maidstone head office too!” Rashida Petch, D&T teacher at the academy, is thrilled that Balreed has opened their doors: “Balreed has kindly given my year 9 GCSE Graphic Products students the

opportunity to visit their HQ offices. The students will get to see, first-hand, how products are printed and made on a commercial level. This will help them with completing the PrintIT! national competition that they have been working on and bring printing techniques to life. This information will also be relevant when the students complete their controlled assessment and GCSE examination at the end of the course.” You are invited to donate to the partners’ extraordinary efforts and find out more about the PassIT! fundraising campaign by contacting the PrintIT! team on 01235 432030 or sii@proskills.co.uk

TG Print Wins Trade Business with DigiBook 200

TG Print & Design, Royal Arsenal, Woolwich, has become the latest UK print business to install a Morgana DigiBook 200 PUR perfect binding machine. Morgana, who are a manufacturer of equipment for digital finishing, launched the DigiBook 200 last year at Ipex 2014 as the latest addition to its popular PUR perfect binder range. The company prints both litho and digital work and offers its binding services out to the trade. Litho work at TG Print & Design is handled with a Heidelberg XL75, with a combination of Konica Minolta 6000 and MGI Meteor machines handling the digital throughput. Wide format production is undertaken on both EFI flat-bed and HP equipment.. Commenting on the latest Morgana purchase, Dave Duhig, Managing Director of TG Print & Design, said: “We had been considering the benefits of bringing PUR binding in-house for some time. We have an excellent relationship with the team at Morgana, and they offered us a trial of the DigiBook 200, suggesting that this machine would be more than capable of handling the work that we needed to produce, with the quality of bind that we were looking for. The trial was a great success – in fact it was so good that we picked up two new trade jobs because of it!” The DigiBook 200 joins a range of other Morgana equipment, including an AutoCreaser, DigiFold Pro, and one of the suppliers laminating products. “In addition to winning new trade work, the DigiBook means that we are saving money on placing PUR

work out, and keeping a much tighter hold on production schedules. The fact that we can now produce PUR binding at a more cost effective price means that we have been able to tempt a number of customers to try it – they then become hooked on the quality of bind they get back. We might not use it for several days, but when we need PUR it is available immediately, and like everything we buy from Morgana, it is reliable, efficient, and affordable.” Short-run work completed on the DigiBook 200 at TG Print & Design has included the production of advance copies and even proof copies of publications. “It makes a big difference to how customers view you as a supplier when you turn up with a couple of finished books rather than a whole bundle of loose sheets,” said Dave. Ray Hillhouse, Sales and Marketing

Director at Morgana Systems, said: “We have been delighted over the last year with the reception of the DigiBook 200. TG Print illustrates yet again that the product offers the ideal solution for print businesses seeking quality PUR binding for short to medium-run work. The quality of bind, the speed of production, and the cost of the system are making it an essential tool for today’s fast turnaround print business.” The DigiBook 200 handles spine lengths from 110 to 320mm and the maximum thickness is 50mm. Retractable spine milling means that the device can go from soft- to hard-cover binding at the flick of a switch. Side gluing for the cover hinge is adjustable depending upon the cover style required. Full details of Morgana’s product line-up can be found at: www.morgana.co.uk

Newtech success for Doro Tape BEING part of the Newtech ‘Wide Format, Screen, Digital & Display’ regional shows has been paying dividends for Doro Tape UK Ltd. Not having a large network of sales reps on the road, Doro Tape find exhibitions a useful way of presenting their excellent and diverse range of products to customers and potential customers alike. James Carpenter Doro Tape’s MD says ‘We are finding that these shows are an invaluable way of getting to all areas of the UK, where we are able to make a really good presentation of our products and services. BALREED HOST DOCUMENT STRATEGY EVENTS

The inaugural event will take place at Warwickshire Cricket Club’s Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham on Wednesday 11th March and the second event will be held at Bristol City Football Club on Thursday 12th March. Further dates and venues will be announced soon. Attendees will be taken on a journey to discover how the efficiency and resilience of their document infrastructure and process can be optimised with Balreed. Specialist staff from Balreed will be on hand to show how devices are monitored remotely and to demonstrate live workflow solutions including mobile working and cloud. Gary Downey, Balreed’s Group Marketing Director said; “The Peak Performance events will be a great opportunity for all types of organisation to see how our approach and the right mix of technology and support can dramatically improve their document efficiency. There will also be opportunities for visitors to get involved in live unique workflow demonstrations.” If you would like to attend, please visit www.balreed.com/events/ or call 0345 000 8899 to register your interest.

A good example of this is when James Hopkin of Ability Digital Print – part of Cast Media Group – visited the Doro stand at Wetherby near Leeds. He was looking for a printable wall covering media that was simple to apply and removable. He was pointed in the direction of Doro Tape’s Digi-Fab, a PE based self-adhesive fabric with a quality textured finish. This film fitted the bill as it had a removable adhesive making it simple to apply. James Hopkin commented ‘I used the Digi fab material for a one day exhibition in London. It worked brilliantly and it was easily removed the following day’. www.dorotape.co.uk

New Enfocus PitStop 13 PITSTOP 13 has a re-designed preflight engine that addresses the challenges of creating high-quality PDFs and is structured to ensure the submission of high-quality PDFs, today, tomorrow and well into the future. It includes a new option to generate bleed where none currently exists and the ability for users to customise the language and content of the error messaging within preflight reports, including the use of languages for which the software has not yet been localised. Andrew Bailes-Collins, Senior Product Manager responsible for the PitStop product family, explains: “As PDF files are now being used for more and more complex print jobs and deadlines are becoming increasingly tighter, it became obvious to the PitStop development team that the current preflight engine needed some improvements in order to support the current and future needs of our users. The result is the next generation of PDF Preflight and correction. In addition to paying close attention to customer feedback, we unleashed the creativity of our engineering team to ensure that PitStop 13, which contains both enhancements and brand new functionality, stays ahead of market demands and secures our continuing leadership position in the preflight and auto-correction arena.”

MORE TARGETED, RELEVANT CHECKS AND CORRECTIONS Preflight Restrictions represents the most significant change to the PitStop Preflight library since it was created 15 years ago. It allows the checks and fixes included in

a preflight profile to be limited to certain aspects of a PDF. For example, a PDF page box, a certain page or pages, a particular area or specific elements of a PDF, even different layers within a PDF file can each be checked in different ways, depending upon user requirements. The options for customising preflight are now virtually endless. This means that PitStop 13 users benefit from a much more targeted preflight check, receiving fewer irrelevant warnings and errors. It also enables the ability to carry out complex quality control routines, thoroughly checking files in one processing pass. Because the PitStop Preflight editor interface, already familiar to hundreds of thousands of users around the globe, has only minimal changes, the new functionality can be implemented without any major retraining or re-reading of product manuals. This is a significant benefit for users.

shapes to create bleed if none existed. Users could also manually manipulate a PDF to extend bleed if the file design allowed it. The new version is a leap forward, as it works by mirroring the individual objects that are close to or cross a PDF box to create bleed. These mirrored objects are also completely editable so the resulting bleed can also be adjusted manually if necessary, which we believe is unique in the world of preflighting. Bleed can be generated for single or multiple objects, as well as complete pages or documents, significantly streamlining workflow in the production process.”

AUTOMATIC BLEED GENERATION

CUSTOMISABLE PREFLIGHT MESSAGES

Another major enhancement is the Add Bleed Action, which allows bleed to be generated even if none exists in the original file. Bailes-Collins explains: “Lack of bleed in supplied PDF files is still a major issue for our customers. Previous versions of PitStop displayed bleed if it was available and could automatically extend rectangular

Based upon PitStop users’ request, the ability to customise the warning and error messages in the PitStop Preflight reports has been added. In PitStop 13, messages can be customised to reflect non-technical language that can include suggestions for corrections if necessary. In addition, the preflight messages can be translated into

languages that are not currently supported by the PitStop application.

Canon launches new five colour imagePROGRAF CANON has announced the introduction of two new imagePROGRAF printers aimed at supporting print businesses and in-house print rooms needing efficient and easy-to-use CAD and display graphics solutions. The Canon imagePROGRAF iPF670 (24” / 610mm) and Canon imagePROGRAF iPF770 (36” / 914mm) both feature faster print speeds, improved ink management and faster, more reliable image processing. Both models can now print an A1 equivalent image in 28 seconds in the fastest print mode, while HP-GL/2 and HP-RTL support allows for more flexible and reliable CAD file handling. The iPF770 is also available as an MFP, with an optional large format scanner and 22” touchscreen display attachment. New inks allow for an increased colour gamut specifically intended to print more vivid reds for clarity in CAD drawings and indoor point-of-sale signage. Two black pigment ink tanks supplement the standard dye inks for richer, sharper blacks, while making it easier to mark-up CAD artwork without smearing the print. The ink tanks are hot-swappable, and can be replenished mid-print without wasting either ink or paper. Other new features allow for an improved workflow before and after printing. Accounting software makes it easier for small businesses to manage costs and margins. A print utility for Apple iPad enables mobile users to view and print files straight from their mobile devices. Finally, a new stand design allows for easy switching between a basket or flat-stacking print output.

“Canon’s imagePROGRAF range is known all over the world for its quality and reliability,” said Yuichi Miyano, Director, Wide Format Printing Group, Canon Europe. “We have listened to our customers to understand their needs as businesses, and invested the imagePROGRAF range to support those needs. As a result, the Canon imagePROGRAF iPF670 and iPF770 are designed to be the perfect large format printers for growing businesses with a need for standard volume CAD or indoor point-of-sale printing. With easy maintenance, versatile file handling and comprehensive workflow compatibility, they’re ideal for print service providers or in-house print rooms in architecture, construction and engineering firms.” www.canon.co.uk

New Mimaki CFL-605RT Flatbed Cutting Plotter MIMAKI has announced the launch of the CFL-605RT Compact Flatbed Cutting Plotter which offers both creasing and cutting capabilities and enables the creation and delivery of high quality, cost-effective output. The new CFL-605RT is designed with Mimaki’s well-established technology to support immediate finishing of packaging and prototypes with multiple functions. “There is growing demand for ondemand production of prototypes and small lots, both for products and their packaging,” explains Mike Horsten, General Manager Marketing EMEA at Mimaki Europe. “This includes fast, efficient prototyping and production of samples as well as small lots of products and packaging that may be modified to reflect different seasonal and regional requirements. There are promotional and special event opportunities, too. In particular, we believe markets such as cosmetics and luxury items will benefit from the ability to produce highly responsive eye-catching packaging with short lead times. Our solutions are specifically designed to meet that need, and we are excited to witness the impact we believe they will have on the market as

brand owners and converters alike learn about their many benefits.” The CFL-605RT is a multifunction flatbed cutter that accommodates material sizes up to oversized A2 and features a variety of functions including creasing and eccentric, tangential and reciprocating cutting. Used in combination with the UJF-6042, the new compact flatbed cutting plotter can achieve on-demand production of the original goods by providing the

Your Print Specialists appointed learning partner YOUR Print Specialists (YPS) has been appointed as a learning partner at Studio West Newcastle after installing a laserengraver and wide-format inkjet printer into the ‘project-based learning’ school. The brand new school, which had its first intake of students in September 2014, is recruiting a number of businesses to provide work placement opportunities and real life projects across a variety of market sectors, with YPS set to mentor and give the youngsters insight into the wide-format printing industry. Based in Tyne-and-Wear, YPS has been delivering hardware, software, support and advice to screen printers, lithographers and digital print providers for many years and is renowned for its knowledge of the industry, as managing director, Garry Brown explains; “We’ve got a vast amount of knowledge within our team at YPS and we felt it would be worthwhile to work with a local educational institution and pass some of this on to young people to try to do our bit to preserve the future of print. We feel the pioneering curriculum at Studio West is a wonderful way to teach students practical skills as well as academic subjects and we’re really excited about having the opportunity to be involved.” Brown explains how YPS came to be involved with the ground-breaking school; “We’ve just commissioned a Mimaki CJV30-130 digital inkjet

printer into Studio West for student use. In addition to providing a printing setup, we have also installed an Epilog Laser Helix 18” x 24” engraver, which facilitates engraving of wood, plastics, acrylics and stone as well as many other substrates. Kit like this will really give the students a hands-on opportunity and allow them to explore concepts from design through to manufacturing.” Studio West is more akin to a workplace than a school and has been inspired by High Tech High in California, aiming to build confidence, teamworking and communication skills for the 13 to 19 year olds by combining subjects together into

project-based learning and implementing new teaching methods. Working closely with external businesses is crucial to the success of the projects, as principal designate, Val Wigham explains; “Having businesses partnering with Studio West ensures the students are working on relevant, real-life projects that will equip them with the skills and knowledge they need to move on to an apprenticeship, employment or university. By working with businesses from a wide selection of industries we can match students to the projects appropriate for their required learning experience and strengths.” For more information about products and services at Your Print Specialists visit www. yourprintspecialists.co.uk For information about Studio West Newcastle visit www.studiowestnewcastle.com

Duplo to shine at Northern Lights Customers and partners have pledged huge support for Duplo’s ‘Northern Lights’, the print finishing pioneer’s new regional show on March 10-11 that will bring together a wide cross-section of industry experts demonstrating live applications.

R

EGISTRATIONS HAVE NOW opened for the inaugural free-to-attend two-day showcase at The Lowry, part of a magnificent waterside location in the redeveloped Salford Quays, Manchester. The Duplo event, Northern Lights, will start at 10am, but will remain open until 9pm on day one to provide customers with opportunities to continue discussions and to network in a relaxed environment, as well as get more hands-on with all products, with light refreshments also being served. An ‘operator focus’ will provide an additional attraction on the second day, with the event closing at 5pm. Duplo product specialists and customer trainers will also be on hand, together with other experts, to discuss solutions directly in front of liverunning systems. The headline partners working alongside Duplo will include Balreed, Infigo Software, Lumejet, Paperlinx, Renz and Vivid. A variety of applications will be shown with latest software, print and finishing systems demonstrating cross media marketing, web2print and on-demand personalisation solutions. Developing new and existing revenue streams will be at the heart of ‘Northern Lights’ alongside creating added value and providing ideas for increasing workflow efficiencies and reducing bottlenecks within current processes. Sarah Crumpler, Duplo UK Marketing Manager, said: “Our customers are delighted that we are

bringing a show northwards, which is another example of our innovative approach and customer care where we are increasing support through training, service and marketing initiatives. “Our business is driven by the feedback that we receive from our customers and our events are no different. There is a lot of excitement around the inaugural ‘Northern Lights’.

DUPLO OWNERS’ CLUB LAUNCH

DUPLO will be using its inaugural ‘Northern Lights’ show as the official launch-pad for a new initiative, the Duplo Owners’ Club, to further improve customer communications. Duplo’s first customer-only forum will be chaired by Adrian Tolley, Operations Director at Prime Group, Nottingham. The first of many events that will be created to focus on booklet makers, service

and R&D. Directors of print companies who have Duplo multi-finishers are the target audience, but no employees from the print finishing pioneer will be present. Both initiatives are designed to create a community and improve a two-way dialogue between Duplo and its customers. Another attraction for ‘Northern Lights’ will be the ‘hands-on’ operator sessions. They involve hourly demonstrations on getting the best out of two of the most popular Duplo products in the region, the DC-645 multi-finisher and the System 500i booklet maker system. Expertise will be provided by Duplo product specialists, together with other experts including trainers, as well as commercial partners at the event. Sarah Crumpler, told QPP: “The launch of the Duplo Owners’ Club and our first customer-only forum are all part of a fresh approach to the way we do customer communications, designed to improve the two-way flow of information. “’Northern Lights’ will bring together a wide cross-section of industry experts demonstrating live applications. All initiatives are designed to help customers develop new and existing revenue streams alongside creating added value and providing ideas for increasing workflow efficiencies and reducing bottlenecks within current processes.” Registration is free for the event and promises to deliver a platform for networking in a relaxed environment, as well as providing time to get more hands-on with all products. CWE SHOW SIGN WORKFLOW SOLUTIONS

CITY and West End Solutions (CWE) will highlight the need for optimal quality across an entire digital print and finishing workflow – from the machines and inks, to the software, the media and the finishing. CWE Commercial Director Graham De Kock said: “To get the best output you need to invest in your entire workflow – but that doesn’t mean it has to cost you a fortune. “We’ll be showcasing the HP Latex 360 and 310 printers, which we first introduced at Sign & Digital 2014. They’ve proved to be incredibly popular since then, and we’ve installed more than 80 units from the HP Latex 300 range. “Feedback from our customers has been overwhelmingly positive, and visitors to the show will be able to see how the new technology could benefit their business too. “While the HP Latex 300s are great for signage applications and volume printing, they’re also perfect for the more bespoke, high end applications such as wall coverings and lightboxes where you need guaranteed colour matching and top notch image definition and ink density.” The inks - The water-based HP latex inks combine the best characteristics of solvent inks and water-based inks for applications with versatility and enhanced durability. They produce high quality, environmentally friendly and odourless prints which are completely cured inside the printer to form a durable image that’s immediately ready for finishing, shipment, or display. The software - Put the HP Latex 300 range together with the HP WallArt application for customised wall decoration, and the AVA Rip software that’s optimised for the decorative printing industry, and you can produce stunning results. “High end, high margin applications are becoming increasingly popular across the residential, retail and commercial markets, from wallcoverings to posters, lightboxes and canvas,” added Graham. “We’ve also recently been appointed as the sole UK distributor for Barbieri Spectrophotometers, and we’re looking forward to showing visitors how this top of the range product complements our suite of wide format solutions, offering super-accurate colour matching.” Barbieri Electronic is a colour measurement market leader for large format, flatbed and industrial printing. Its spectrophotometers utilise many points of reference during the measurement process to give an accurate description of the colour. They also offer the benefit of variable patch size readings, contactless and speed readings.

The media - CWE will be demonstrating the capabilities of the HP Latex printers using its Expanse range of media which is aimed squarely at wide format print providers and signmakers. Expanse media deliver optimum results and a reliable, consistent and trouble free performance. The range supplied by CWE includes poster papers; vinyls; poly laminates; billboard paper; textiles including knitted flag and lightbox satin; backlit gloss; and easy to use textile wallpaper. The final product - CWE will be taking a Summa wide format cutter to Sign and Digital, demonstrating how to get the perfect cut finish, every time. www.cwesolutions.co.uk

PERFECT COLOURS SHOWS THE PERSONAL TOUCH

PERFECT Colours will be unmissable at Sign and Digital UK this year, bringing a full house of new and established products to its largest stand to date. But, as well as the first UK outing for one of its new flagship wide-format machines, the award-winning sign and graphics supplier will be making the statement that it is personality that makes the difference when choosing a vendor partner in this fast-paced market. Debuting in the UK at the show is the five colour UV-curable InkTec Jetrix KX6. The 2.4 x 1.2m flat-bed – which the reseller supplies with two years’ free warranty – attains speeds of up to 55sq m/hour using dual CMYK plus four white channels, making it an attractive option for the Sign UK audience. Able to produce fine art quality at low running costs, the KX6 is a robust and costeffective option for those transitioning from analogue process or hoping to increase their throughput, being as it is the fastest true flat-bed in its size. Precision-focused printers will be interested in the Durst Omega 2, the compact but powerful 1.6m hybrid which, despite its entry-level price point, can accommodate heat-sensitive media and produce high-quality prints at up to 1,728dpi. Perfect Colours will also present an array of machines from HP, such as the popular 1.62m (64”) Latex 360, which prints at a top speed of 91sq m/hour and integrates a media cutter for vinyl, paper and polyester film, and the small but mighty Latex 310. The HP Designjet Z6800 and the Epson SureColor F6000 are likely to appeal to display professionals looking to diversify in 2015. The eightcolour 1.52m HP engine is a lightning-fast photographic production printer reaching an incredible 140sq m/hour and sporting an on-board X-Rite I1 Pro spectrophotometer for superb replication of skin tones and solid colours. Meanwhile, the 1.1m Epson SC F6000 creates a viable entry point into lucrative dye-sublimation work. Supported by Perfect Colours’s education and customer led approach, these machines are strong contenders for print houses to expand without breaking the bank. A range of high-productivity cutters from Summa – renowned for their accuracy – will also be paraded. Powering and complementing this formidable line-up will be software from Caldera. Perfect Colours will show how the suite – which received a major upgrade towards the end of 2014 – can streamline the entire production process for businesses large and small with modular options and varying degrees of workflow management. Finally, the reseller’s comprehensive range of media and ink options will also be on show. “Perfect Colours is out in force at Sign and Digital UK this year to show how we always deliver for our customers on value, service and quality,” states Jon Telling, Perfect Colours’s sales director. “A business can have the best machine on the market but it has to be supported properly in the field to maximise its return on investment. We have the range, the expertise and the personal touch to ensure that success, and we invite visitors to come and see what we mean.” www.perfectcolours.com Sign & Digital UK is free to attend and registration is now open. Get set for The Print Show

Organisers of The Print Show are bullishly confident over this year’s inaugural event after hitting their first target for stand sales two weeks ahead of schedule.

D

UE TO TAKE place at Birmingham’s NEC from October 13th to 15th, 2015, The Print Show will be a cultural celebration of all things print. From the impact quality printed work can offer, through to the lasting legacy this type of media can leave, the event will welcome visitors and exhibitors from all corners of the industry. Since being launched in November last year, The Print Show has generated a high level of interest in the industry, with a number of major companies, suppliers and organisations having already confirmed their backing for the event. This success has been driven by a trend that is seeing suppliers and manufacturers send in their signed contracts much earlier than anticipated. This will not only help them ensure a good stand position at the show, but also allows them to take advantage of special deals on offer to those that commit early. The latest raft of exhibitors include key print mailing equipment and solutions provider AMS-GB, which recently confirmed its attendance at the show. Kevin McPheat, managing director, said the company has identified the event as one that will offer both the firm and visitors a number of new business opportunities. “We’ve decided to exhibit as we believe the event will offer us access to new business opportunities as well as new customers,” McPheat said. “We’re also attending because, frankly, there are not many other events like this currently out there for UK printers. As there is a dearth of print shows lately, if the organiser gets the show right, and keeps the exhibitors and visitors happy, then they could steal the market in print shows as there is no real focal point for an annual event at present.”

Meanwhile, leading trade supplier and manufacturer of portable exhibition solutions, Ultima Displays, has also signed up to exhibit at the show. Speaking about the decision to attend, managing director Andrew Burdett said the show will attract a host of visitors from a range of areas and will allow the firm to interact with these attendees. “This is a new show dedicated to the print industry, we offer a wide range of printing services to the trade and having exposure at shows like this opens access to strong lead potential,” Burdett said. He adds: “The Print Show features many different aspects of printing which will attract a lot of customers from areas that we don’t usually get to sell to, which means we can expand further and potentially into different market avenues.” In addition to Ultima Displays and AMS-GB, The Print Show has announced that a number of other companies have also signed up to exhibit. Management information system (MIS) supplier Clarity Software has confirmed that it will be in attendance, as has bespoke digital inkjet printing solutions provider Copytrax Technologies. Bespoke software solutions provider Touch Systems has taken a stand at the NEC and will be joined by lamination and encapsulation technology specialist D&K Europe. Folder gluing and finishing expert B&R Moll, bindery technology specialist Perfect Bindery Solutions, and print equipment reseller Signmaster Systems will also be in attendance. These companies will join the likes of Premier Paper Group, Learn2Print and Ashgate Automation, all of which have already confirmed that they will exhibit at the Print Show this October. Speaking about the show’s expanding exhibitor list, event director Chris Davies believes the continuing uptake of stand space gives solid evidence that the UK market is clearly in need for a focused event like this, which will be benefit both exhibitors and visitors. “I encourage all print companies to come along, check out this new gear, and take advantage of the knowledge of those industry experts that will be in attendance. I also encourage those interested in exhibiting to get in touch with our team to secure their desired stand as space is filling up fast!” www.theprintshow.co.uk

3D Printshow: London 21-23 May 3D Printshow returns to London for the 4th year, bringing this incredible tech to one of the world’s most exciting, vibrant and multicultural cities – the city where 3D Printshow began! 3D Printshow London will be an all-encompassing event, giving a true overview of the many facets of 3D printing/Additive Manufacturing in 2015. It will feature content that ranges from high-end industry, business and automotive manufacturing to medicine, fashion and art and design.

This year, 3D Printshow will be heading to one of London’s major landmark buildings, located in the City and on the river. Old Billingsgate is a stunning Grade II listed building, which is certain to provide an inspiring backdrop to the amazing content on offer over the three days. For education and inspiration, the workshops and seminars rooms will be filled with some of the world’s top 3D printing speakers and the classroom will allow

younger visitors from schools and colleges to understand how this tech is transforming design and manufacturing. The growing team behind the global 3D Printshow, which will be taking place in seven cities in 2015, has welcomed its newest member: Rachel Park. “With her extensive experience and breadth of knowledge across the 3D printing industry, we are so excited to have Rachel join our dynamic team,” said Kerry Hogarth, founder and Managing Director of the 3D Printshow. She continued:“Rachel will be leading the new publishing division at the 3D Printshow, which will launch the sister publication

to the shows later this year. We are thrilled to also announce the title of the new magazine as Disruptive.” Rachel will be taking up the position of Editor of Disruptive and will work with a dedicated team of contributors bringing together a diverse and respected community of voices from across the 3D printing ecosystem. As the 3D Printshow continues to evolve in 2015 in terms of offering real B2B opportunities while still demonstrating its innovative brand of creativity, Disruptive will complement this evolution by offering a new and original media platform for the 3D printing community. www.3dprintshow.com

22 | DIGITAL IMAGING | QUICK PRINT PRO | MARCH 2015

Thanks for the memory!

An ancient Persian King once asked his wise men to construct a phrase he could use that would always be true. After much deliberation, they come up with the adage ‘this too shall pass away’. Martin Christie looks at how recorded history could head into the ‘dark ages.’

T

HE PHRASE IS possibly the world’s first recorded sound bite, this prediction has now been updated for the digital world by one the internet’s wise heads, Vint Cerf, currently a vice president at Google. He is worried that all the images and documents we have been saving on computers will eventually be lost as hardware and software becomes obsolete. Cerf fears that future generations will have little or no record of the 21st Century as we enter what he describes as a ‘digital Dark Age’. Speaking at a large science conference in San Jose he said “Our life, our memories, our most cherished family photographs increasingly exist as bits of information — on our hard drives or on ‘the cloud’. But as technology moves on, they risk being lost in the wake of an accelerating digital revolution. Old formats of documents that we’ve created or presentations may not be readable by the latest version of the software because backwards compatibility is not always guaranteed. “And so what can happen over time is that even if we accumulate vast archives of digital content, we may not actually know what it is.” This revelation may have shocked the cyber geeks who had no idea that their electronic world could crumble into dust as well as the temples of ancient civilisations. But it won’t surprise anyone who has worked in the print on demand industry during the last decades, nor regular readers of this column. The days when hard copies of originals could be stacked in a drawer for future use are long gone. Backing up and storing all the vast amounts

of digital information in different file formats is enough of a challenge, but there is also the problem that you still have to sort through it all to find anything. It’s surprising how quickly the general public has accepted digital information without question, and more worrying that it is assumed to be indestructible. The fact that they will commit valuable items, and even entire life history to small pieces of metal and plastic, reveals a faith in technology which is way beyond actual reliability. Backing up files and photos on discs and hard drives is good practice, and seems a bit like an insurance policy, but you are still hedging your bets on the likelihood of anyone of them failing. The continual deterioration of digital files through saving and transfer is a potential nightmare described as data rot. And as nobody has any form of digital format older than fifty years, no

one really knows if it will survive more than a generation. It is sobering to remember that the space shuttle was retired, not because the mechanical aerodynamics were out of date, but because NASA could not service software that was more than several decades old. Now that the technology is literally in the hands of the general public worldwide it is much more of an issue because there is, apart from the basic binary mathematics, no standard for language or coding to interpret the information contained. In simple terms we have various formats for text, graphics, digital photographs and now movies and those formats need the correct software to render those objects. Sometimes the standards we use to produce those objects fade away and are replaced by other alternatives and then software that is supposed to render images can’t render older formats, so the images are no longer visible. Cerf is calling for some form of standardisation to ensure the files and images are preserved — set in digital stone as it were. But with the pressure of competition driving ever more novel devices and solutions, this hardly seems likely. It’s a bit like the attempt at introducing Esperanto as a universal language. Nice idea if you could get everyone to agree to use it. The long term concept is to have this universal decoder, or decoders, embedded into the very body of some gigantic cloud based server, far bigger than anything currently available, to which everything could be uploaded and therefore preserved for the conceivable future. Of course out of all of the millions of images uploaded daily on social networking sites, if the vast majority of cute kittens and culinary masterpieces were lost to future generations, it would not be such a great tragedy for human history. But on a personal note there are things that are worth preserving, and records that need to be passed on to generations to come. And for that Cerf has a simple short term solution — print it out. Good idea. Do you think it will catch on? In the light of this I am designing a storage device that will be able to contain these priceless prints. It will be simple, affordable, and made from recyclable material. It will be easily accessed and quickly searchable. I am going to call it a shoe box. I think I am on a winner here. Just have to work out what to do with all the shoes! By coincidence a digital milestone was passed in February. Back in 1987, Thomas Knoll developed a pixel imaging programme called Display. It was a simple programme to showcase grayscale images

MARCH 2015 | QUICK PRINT PRO | DIGITAL IMAGING | 23

on a black-and-white monitor. However, after collaborating with his brother, John Knoll, the two began adding features that made it possible to process digital image files from newly developed cameras. The programme eventually caught the attention of the industry, and in 1989, some far sighted wizard in Adobe made the decision to license the software, naming it Photoshop, and introducing the first version in 1990. Hence 2015 marks the 25th birthday of the ubiquitous photo editing service, and as a little reminder I’m reproducing some images that may or may not be familiar to QPP readers. If you have been here a while they may remind you of just how basic things were twenty years ago, and how far we have come in the manipulation of digital image and information. Adobe thought they would sell about 500 copies a month, but it would be fair to say they have exceeded expectations as the programme has expanded over the years, including the development of the Creative Suite in the last decade. From basic images it has gone to 3D and special effects for movies such as Avatar and Shrek. Adobe’s success has been the result of developing complimentary software for illustration and design, both for print and web, so that files can be moved seamlessly from one platform to another. That’s why, although other products are available, there is no complete alternative for the professional user and a competent knowledge of Photoshop and its associated software is as near to a universal knowledge of imaging as you can get. They were also smart enough to get in on the mobile phone and table market before others overtook them, thus ensuring their market leading position. As a result Photoshop has become not only a name, a noun and an action, much like to Hoover once meant using a vacuum cleaner. I’m sure the boffins at Adobe are busy plotting developments in the next decade, but those are not likely to be exhibited too soon.

THE PHOTOGRAPHY SHOW

What is coming in the near term is likely to be seen at The Photography Show, at the NEC, Birmingham, between Saturday 21st March and Tuesday 24th. Adobe will be there with their popular workshops on current Photoshop and Lightroom. This is the second year of the relaunched Photography Exhibition. The previous long running camera show was launched when digital was still but a blink in a lens. These days you will be pushed to find a roll of film in the place, though the purists will still swear by it. What you will find is everything from the basic to the most sophisticated camera gear, as well as the

vivid-online.com

means of editing and printing the pictures. That’s why it should be of interest to anyone involved in the current print on demand industry. Not only will you see many familiar trade faces exhibiting, but you may find other products and services of interest you may not see at the normal print trade shows. And most importantly most of the visitors are your potential next customers. The show draws about thirty thousand people over the four days, combining as it does both trade and retail. That’s why it’s a good barometer of the current and future market place. Obviously much of the kit on display and for sale will be aimed at the professional and the serious amateur. But there will be a lot of simple over the counter product like photobooks, and frames that have a definite place in the high street shop. The digital evolution has dramatically changed the face of photography as we all are well aware. No one is safe from a captured snap, and it has made the collection of images an almost compulsive behavioral state. Perhaps fortunately, few of these glimpses of time will be preserved for the future, but as mentioned earlier in this piece, there are those that deserve more permanent attention. That’s why printing will always be a central part of the visual experience, and ironic that it is heralded as such by one of the top developers

of the internet. In the early days of cyber space it was widely predicted that printed paper as such would become redundant! Perhaps even more in an instant world, the permanent record is seen to be more valuable. It is also quite priceless as a gift in the way that sending someone a smiley face on a phone will never be. There are over 200 exhibitors in Hall 5 at the NEC next month including Canon, Nikon, Sony, Panasonic, Olympus, Fujifilm and Leica. But apart from the leading manufacturers there are many small specialists of services like mounting and framing. I’ve always been a fan of this and similar exhibitions where potential customers can talk and take advice from experts, as well as get their hands on exactly the product they want. This is the relationship you can’t get easily over an internet connection, and it works both ways as the retailer gets to know what the customer actually wants. This is of course the same as meeting over the high street counter, just with a much bigger shop, and a wider selection of goodies. So perhaps it is worth a second thought in promoting in the light of concerns of long term digital fragility. You don’t need to be a scaremonger to point out, like the wise Persians, that nothing lasts forever, but that a print may just last a bit longer than a JPEG. So if you want confirmation that a lot of people still want to see and touch things in the real world, I can recommend a visit to The Photography Show. You are bound to find something of interest, and maybe something that will literally be of profit to you. If you don’t maybe somebody else will. www.thephotographyshow.com

AS a part of its commitment to the Carbon Capture scheme, Kall Kwik in Oxford recently took part in a Carbon Capture tree planting day in Heartwood Forest, Hertfordshire. More than 3,000 trees were planted at a site which is set to become the UK’s biggest continuous new native woodland. Its director Christine Herbert joined over 150 other ethically minded businesses at Heartwood Forest, which is a ‘Woodland Carbon Site’ in St. Albans, where they were greeted with hot drinks and breakfast to set them up for a hard days planting trees including Oak, Alder, Willow, Wild Cherry, Rowan, Holly, Beech and Hazel. Said Christine: “Many believe that paper products are not environmentally friendly because the manufacturing process involves cutting down trees. In fact, our industry has always been one of the most active when it comes to green issues. “By sourcing trees from properly managed forests and then balancing the carbon emissions created during the paper making process through helping to create new native woodlands, significant amounts of carbon will be removed from the atmosphere and stored. CO2 levels in the atmosphere have increased by more than a third since the industrial revolution. The UK government has a target of reducing carbon emissions to 50% of the levels they were at in 1990 by 2025. Scientists are currently looking at ways the CO2 produced by making energy through burning fossil fuels can be captured before it enters the atmosphere and then stored safely underground for thousands of years. But trees capture and store CO2 as part of their natural growing process. CO2 emissions from the paper purchased and used by Kall Kwik is compensated for by planting and conserving native woodland in the UK. It is calculated that 25m² of native UK woodland will capture and store one tonne of CO2 and creating large areas of new native woodland, will, over time, remove hundreds of thousands of tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The scheme operates under the Woodland Trust’s Woodland Carbon scheme and the Government’s Woodland Carbon Code, a voluntary standard for woodland creation projects in the UK. www.kallkwik.co.uk/oxford

Tullis Russell win Green Energy Award EMPLOYEE-OWNED premium paper and board producer Tullis Russell won the Renewing Scotland category at the Scottish Green Energy Awards in Edinburgh. The prestigious environmental awards, now in their 13th year, recognise the best in renewable energy talent, projects and innovation across Scotland. The company received the award for its part in a multi-million pound project with RWE Innogy UK to replace the coal and gas-fired power station at its Markinch base with a new-state-of-the-art Biomass CHP facility. The new Biomass CHP at Tullis Russell has been built, and will be owned and operated by RWE Innogy UK. It is providing all of Tullis Russell’s electricity and steam requirements and is also feeding power into the local grid, making a major contribution to Scotland’s renewable energy targets. The largest of its type in the UK, the new plant uses a combination of end of life recovered wood as its main fuel source topped up with virgin wood and provides the Fife-based business with an environmentally friendly source of renewable energy. The CHP technology used in the plant will result in a reduction in fossilfuel carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 250,000 tonnes per annum, reducing the company’s carbon emissions by more than 70%. Tullis Russell were one of three Fife businesses to win awards at the ceremony with ScotAsh and Mines Rescue Service also picking up awards, all demonstrating Fife’s commitment to sustainability, green technology and innovation. Niall MacDonald Managing Director at Tullis Russell’s Markinch mill commenting on the award said: “Sustainability sits at the heart of our business. We are employee-owned and have been an important part of the community for over 205 years. The CHP plant offers the ideal platform to take the business forward by providing us with a secure and sustainable energy source, and it’s fitting that the plant will deliver strong environmental benefits to Fife and Scotland as a whole in the years to come.” Ian Calvert, Head of Biomass at RWE Innogy UK said: “RWE Innogy UK has invested over £200 million in the construction of the Markinch Biomass CHP plant. More than 600 temporary jobs were created during the construction phase of the project. Thirty seven permanent jobs have been established to maintain the running of the plant and the offsite fuel processing facility in Cardenden. By generating efficient, sustainable steam and power for Tullis Russell, the biomass CHP plant is helping to secure the 500 jobs at the Glenrothes operation. The plant has and will continue to deliver on many levels in the years to come.” Councillor John Wincott, Fife Council’s Sustainability Champion said “This is fantastic news for Fife and I’d like to congratulate Tullis Russell on their awards success. This is another example of Fife leading the way in sustainable economic development and renewable energy generation and strengthens our reputation as a centre for excellence for renewable energy.” www.tullisrussell.com @tullis_russell

New online print platform launches essentials range EXAPRINT, the online print platform for graphic designers and print professionals has launched a new lost-cost “Essentials” range as it looks to offer low added value products at ultra low costs to resellers. The firm, which delivers white-labelled print solutions exclusively for resellers, is introducing the range so as to offer very low prices for standard commodity products, whilst also providing a huge range of added value higher end products. The move comes as it aims to improve its customer’s margins in line with the company mission, that of helping its customers to grow their own business. Simon Cooper, Managing Director of Exaprint, said, “Print resellers require a diverse range of added value products that they can offer to their customers, as well as tools to help them stimulate demand for those higher value items. Traditionally Exaprint has been very good at supporting those needs, however with Essentials we have recognised that on high frequency commodity

products, low price is what’s most desirable and that’s exactly what this range of products delivers.” The “Essentials” range covers the most popular and frequently used products, such as business cards, leaflets, flyers and letterheads. The range will initially consist of ten products, specifically broken down into four different business card offerings, two types of flyers, two versions of letterheads, a leaflet and a roll up banner. Exaprint operates exclusively on a white-labelled basis, allowing resellers to have all products delivered directly to the end user without reference to Exaprint.

AT this year’s Trophex exhibition held at the NEC in Birmingham TheMagicTouch were awarded the prestigious “Best Innovation” accolade for the second successive year. This year’s successful entry introduced the unique full colour direct image transfer process for the decoration of glass bottles and jars offering a premium “no label” look and feel. Using the unique Oki 711 “White Toner” LED digital printer and TheMagicTouch CPM transfer paper the company has developed a quick and simple method to produce full colour images onto various shaped bottles or jars regardless of glass colour. Having witnessed in 2014 the success of personalised labels on selected drinks brands including Famous Grouse and several Champagne brands, together with the global success of the personalised Coca-Cola bottles, there is now the opportunity to print and personalise “directly to the surface” a vast range of glass products. Potential applications include limited edition bottles, personalised gifts, promotional and recognition products, together with the obvious wine, beer, cider and spirits markets. The CPM toner-based transfers are applied using a traditional mug press in less than two minutes, costing as little as 15p per full colour transfer. Jim Nicol, Managing Director, commented “We introduced the white

Business cards are available from as little as £11.08 for 250, with A5 flyers priced at £25.31 for 1000. A4 letterheads will cost £21.38 for 250, whilst roll up banners in the range are priced at £25.60 for 1. Simon Cooper elaborated, “We’re the only UK online printing business that works exclusively with resellers, which gives us a unique understanding of their needs. By introducing the “Essentials” range we’re recognising that there is a time and a place for value added products, but at other times it’s price that matters most. We believe the prices we have set are the lowest in the market, but should someone find lower elsewhere, all of these items are covered by our price match guarantee as well. We want resellers to be able to use us for all of their day-to-day requirements as well as using us for the less frequent added value products on offer.” Simon concluded, “We firmly believe in the value of not only providing an innovative product range but also in developing tools to help our clients to grow the demand for those products. Whilst we don’t think that price should be the main differentiator, we recognise that from time to time, particularly with commoditised products, we can be most helpful by simply offering our customers the lowest prices on the market.” The Exaprint Essentials Range is accessible via www.exaprint.co.uk or by calling 0203 475 7475.

A Surefire Way to Success I

T’S NOT OFTEN that something as straightforward as a printer changes the course of a business. But an OKI device has certainly opened up new horizons for Surrey-based Surefire Print and Design. Although the company remains a popular one-stop shop for local businesses needing anything from business cards to banners, thanks to the OKI C711WT, it now also lists film crews, fashion models and motorracing companies among its clientele. There are many reasons for this new direction — the skills and experience of the team for one. But on the technical side, it is all down to one main factor — the ability of the device to print with white toner. Surefire’s founder and managing director Simon Garrett is certain of the impact of this advance. “We have made the decision to stay small, but for any company aiming to expand, I think this printer could help increase turnover by at least 20%,” he says. Started with a mug - Simon founded Surefire in 2008. He had just sold a large, high turnover print shop as the recession began to bite. Reluctant to waste his many years of print experience, he set up the new venture with the idea of keeping it small. Instead of focusing on growth they would concentrate on the quality of their work and on providing the best possible customer service. The business began by focusing on large format printing — posters, banners and the like. Then, a few years ago, one of Surefire’s customers asked if they could produce printed mugs and iPhone cases. “We went down the dye sublimation route originally — and we still do a lot of this,” explains Garrett. “However, we then began to consider mugs with a matt finish.” He saw an advertisement in a printing magazine for OKI specialist partner, TheMagicTouch, experts in image transfer paper and applications. The team there suggested the OKI C711WT — an innovative LED printer that, for the first time, includes white toner in the CMY colour process. This enables the

decoration of dark coloured substrates such as mugs and other products including diaries and phone covers.

MORE IDEAS However, the C711WT was about to do far more than just print mugs. “In fact we don’t do them at all now,” says Simon. “Somehow it sparked off far more ideas and we realised we could print and bond onto almost anything using the transfer paper supplied by TheMagicTouch and the OKI printer. “Everybody does T-shirts,” he says. “But we’ve been more ambitious. We’ve particularly worked hard on perfecting our work on leather. We’ve found a way to get the print to sink into the leather and this has meant printing, not just on iPhone and iPad cases and bags, but also on leather jackets.” In fact, Surefire’s customised leather jackets have become legendary. Customers approach them to print one-off jackets to see what the design looks like, before they go into mass production, using silkscreen printing. Or sometimes it’s a single jacket for a TV programme or fashion shoot. “Most people assume that you can only print on flat items,” he continues. “But if you know what you are doing, you can print on virtually anything. In my opinion, the OKI printer gives you that freedom — and it’s enabling us to differentiate

The Double-sided window sticker ONE of the most frequently asked questions about Clings is “can it be printed double sided?” The short answer is “No”, but we now have the perfect solution... VIBO by Think Ambient is a double-sided sticker with an ultra low tack adhesive. It is removable and repositionable, with a dead-opaque barrier between front and back to prevent show-through. Harvey Jones - a manufacturer and nationwide retailer of bespoke, handmade kitchens has been going crazy for the VIBO product using it for both their January sale and now extended sale! Think Ambient printed large ‘ticket’ shaped VIBO for their January sale and they loved it so much they ordered the same again. VIBO offers brilliant print quality and has a

special “limited growth” adhesive that offers superb “stickability” but with the bonus that when it’s time to remove the graphics, it is still easy to remove and won’t leave any adhesive residue on the windows. In addition to printing VIBO, Think Ambient also organise and arrange delivery to all stores with a full delivery report being available immediately after all deliveries have been made. “We’ve been very impressed with the VIBO material. It has several key advantages over standard vinyl as it can be printed on both sides, can be easily installed and — importantly — is easily removed without leaving any residue.” – Marketing Manager, Harvey Jones www.thinkambient.co.uk

ourselves as a business. I’ve been in the industry for 30 years and in my opinion there isn’t another machine on the market that would do what we wanted it to in this way.” He stresses that the printed jackets are not a huge part of Surefire’s overall business as they are usually single orders. “But they get our name out there and enable us to offer other things that traditional printers would never consider,” he says. He believes very strongly that these days, printers need to diversify in this way to compensate for changes in the industry due to the increasing use of electronic marketing materials and communications. “Printers such as the C711WT offer a tremendous opportunity. At the moment, there are no plans to expand Surefire, but if we did need to do so, this would be the way forward,” he says. He adds that, in his view, printing companies that wish to achieve similar success need to do two things. The first is to put the work in upfront to get new methods right. “You might need to waste product at first, but if you are breaking new ground this is inevitable. Once you have cracked it, every job should come out right first time. But you have to be prepared to take a risk.” The second is to have their own ideas. Of course, Simon is not going to give away how Surefire achieves what it does, but he believes that with the OKI printer and the help of TheMagicTouch they have the potential to innovate in a parallel way themselves. “It’s a case of using your imagination - and then you can do almost anything,” he concludes. www.themagictouch.co.uk

SALESMAN APPRAISAL A guy walked into a bar and said ‘All salesmen are idiots!’ Then he went to the barman and got a beer. A customer walked up to him and said, ‘I am sorry but that offended me.’ ‘Oh, I’m sorry, are you a salesman?’ ‘No, I’m an idiot.’

EVER WONDER - Why the sun lightens our hair, but darkens our skin? - Why women can’t put on mascara with their mouth closed? - Why don’t you ever see the headline “Psychic Wins Lottery”? - Why is “abbreviated” such a long word? - Why is it that doctors call what they do “practice”? - Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavour, and dishwashing liquid made with real lemons? - Why is the man who invests all your money called a broker? - Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour? - Why isn’t there mouse-flavoured cat food? - When dog food is new and improved tasting, who tests it? - Why do they sterilise the needle for lethal injections? - Why don’t sheep shrink when it rains? - Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together? - If flying is so safe, why do they call the airport the terminal?

BOOZE BANTER A teacher wanted to demonstrate the evils of alcohol to his grade 5-class, so he conducted an experiment with a glass of water, a glass of whiskey, and two worms. The professor put the first worm in the glass of water. The worm wiggled about, happy as can be. Then he put the second worm in the whiskey. It writhed painfully, sank to the bottom, and died. ‘Now, what lesson can we learn from this experiment?’ he asked the class. One bright student responded, ‘Drink whiskey and you won’t get worms.’

DON’T YOU JUST LOVE ARTISTS? A woman visited a modern-art gallery. One painting was bright blue with vivid orange swirls and the one hanging next to it was black with lime-green splotches. The artist stood nearby, so as politely as she could, the woman said to him, “I’m sorry, but I just don’t

understand your paintings.” “I paint what I feel inside me,” the artist replied. “I see,” the woman replied innocently. “Have you tried AlkaSeltzer?”

THE OLD ONES ARE THE BEST God bless you Tommy… I bought some HP sauce the other day. It’s costing me 6p a month for the next two years ‘Doctor, I can’t pronounce my F’s, T’s and H’s.’ ‘Well you can’t say fairer than that then’ Two elephants walk off a cliff... boom boom! What’s brown and sounds like a bell? DUNG What do you call a fish with no eyes? A fsh. So I went to the dentist. He said ‘Say Aaah.’ I said ‘Why?’ He said ‘My dog’s died.’ ‘So I got home, and the phone was ringing. I picked it up, and said ‘Who’s speaking please?’ And a voice said ‘You are.’’ ‘So I rang up my local swimming baths. I said ‘Is that the local swimming baths?’ He said ‘It depends where you’re calling from.’’ ‘So I rang up a local building firm, I said ‘I want a skip outside my house.’ He said ‘I’m not stopping you.’ Apparently, 1 in 5 people in the world are Chinese. And there are 5 people in my family, so it must be one of them. It’s either my mum or my dad. Or my older brother Colin. Or my younger brother Ho-Cha-Chu. But I think it’s Colin. So I was in my car, and I was driving along, and my boss rang up, and he said ‘You’ve been promoted.’ And I swerved. And then he rang up a second time and said ‘You’ve been promoted again.’ And I swerved again. He rang up a third time and said ‘You’re managing director.’ And I went into a tree. And a policeman came up and said ‘What happened to you?’ And I said ‘I careered off the road. Now, most dentist’s chairs go up and down, don’t they? The one I was in went back and forwards. I thought ‘This is unusual’. And the dentist said to me ‘Mr Cooper, get out of the filing cabinet.’ So I was getting into my car, and this bloke says to me ‘Can you give me a lift?’ I said ‘Sure, you look great, the world’s your oyster, go for it.’ Two cannibals eating a clown. One says to the other ‘Does this taste funny to you?’ Police arrested two kids yesterday, one was drinking battery acid, the other was eating fireworks. They charged one and let the other one off.

‘You know, somebody actually complimented me on my driving today. They left a little note on the windscreen; it said ‘Parking Fine.’ So that was nice.’ A man walked into the doctor’s. The doctor said ‘ I haven’t seen you in a long time.’ The man replied ‘I know I’ve been ill’ A man walked into the doctor’s, he said ‘I’ve hurt my arm in several places’ The doctor said ‘well don’t go there any more’ I had a ploughman’s lunch the other day. He wasn’t very happy. My dog was barking at everyone the other day. Still, what can you expect from a crossbreed. I was driving down the motorway with my bird the other day when we both got a bit frisky and decided to do something about it. So we decided we’d take the next exit, but it was a turn-off. I went to buy some camouflage trousers the other day but I couldn’t find any. Two aerials meet on a roof - fall in love - get married. The ceremony was rubbish but the reception was brilliant. Man goes to the doc, with a strawberry growing out of his head. Doc says ‘I’ll give you some cream to put on it.’ ‘Doc, I can’t stop singing the green green grass of home.’ ‘That sounds like Tom Jones syndrome. ‘ ‘Is it common? ‘ ‘It’s not unusual.’ A guy walks into the psychiatrist wearing only clingfilm for shorts. The shrink says, ‘Well, I can clearly see you’re nuts.’ A man takes his Rottweiler to the vet. ‘My dog’s cross-eyed, is there anything you can do for him? ‘ ‘Well,’ says the vet, ‘let’s have a look at him’ So he picks the dog up and examines his eyes, then checks his teeth. Finally, he says ‘I’m going to have to put him down.’ ‘What? Because he’s cross-eyed? ‘ ‘No, because he’s really heavy’

POLITICS FROM ACROSS THE POND At a construction site on the 80th floor of a high rise building, the lone conservative on the crew was having a heated political discussion with the liberals on the project. Deciding to take a break, he called everyone over to the edge of the roof. “Did you know,” he began, “that there are extremely violent invisible updrafts that are able to keep a body floating in mid-air? They only occur at certain times during the day between buildings. Here, I’ll show you!” He then leaped off the side of the building, and with arms spread-eagle, floated effortlessly on an unseen cushion of air, and then gradually

steered himself back to the safety of the roof. “That’s awesome,” one of the left-wingers shouted. “I want to try it.” “Me too,” another cried, and then another, and as they leaped over the side of the roof, one after the other, they fell 80 floors straight down to the ground, SPLAT! SPLAT! SPLAT! A crowd rushed over to witness the carnage, and while doing so, one of the spectators looked up and remarked, “Boy, Clark Kent sure hates liberals!”

WELL ‘ARD GEEZER A piece of road walks into a bar and declares to all the occupants, ‘I’m the hardest bit of bitumen in the whole of this town!’ The piano player stops and the bar goes deadly silent. After a brief, pregnant pause, all eyes drop, the piano starts up again and the piece of road pulls up a bar stool and settles down to a pint. Five minutes later a piece of dual carriageway throws open the bar door. Once again the bar goes silent, but for the creaking of the slow overhead fans. The dual-carriageway declares, ‘I’m the toughest piece of bitumen you’ll ever see this side of the border and I don’t take crap from anyone!’ The piece of road slowly turns and locks eyes with the piece of dual carriageway. The tension mounts, other drinkers scatter and take cover. At that precise moment, in walks a piece of motorway and says, ‘I’m the hardest bit of bitumen in the whole damn country and I’ll take you both on.’ And there they stood, in a threeway Mexican standoff, for what seemed like an eternity. Once again the door opens and into the middle of the standoff walks a piece of coloured bitumen. The other three turn their backs to the door, sit down at the bar and stare sheepishly into their drinks. The bartender asks the three pieces of bitumen what the problem is, and they reply, ‘Shhhh. Watch what you say, that guy’s a real cycle path’.

LET THE TRAIN TAKE THE STRAIN In a train carriage there was a printer, a salesman, a spectacular looking blonde girl and a scruffy large lady. After several minutes of the trip the train happens to pass through a dark tunnel, and the unmistakable sound of a slap is heard. When they leave the tunnel, the salesman had a big red slap mark on his cheek. (1) The blonde thought - ‘That salesman son of a bitch wanted to touch me and by mistake, he must have put his hand on the large lady, who in turn must have slapped his face’

(2) The large lady thought - ‘This dirty old salesman laid his hands on the blonde and she smacked him’. (3) The salesman thought - ‘That printer put his hand on that blonde and by mistake she slapped me’. (4) The printer thought - ‘I hope there’s another tunnel soon so I can smack that salesman again’.

REVENGE IS DARK Well, it has finally happened. The blondes of the print world have got together and decided to take revenge on the brunettes: WHAT’S BLACK AND BLUE AND BROWN AND LAYING IN A DITCH? A brunette who’s told too many blonde jokes. WHAT’S THE REAL REASON A BRUNETTE KEEPS HER FIGURE? No one else wants it. WHY ARE SO MANY BLONDE JOKES ONE-LINERS? So brunettes can remember them. WHAT DO YOU CALL A BRUNETTE IN A ROOM FULL OF BLONDES? Invisible. WHAT’S A BRUNETTE’S MATING CALL? ‘Has the blonde left yet? ‘ WHY DIDN’T INDIANS SCALP BRUNETTES? The hair from a buffalo’s butt was more manageable. WHY IS THE BRUNETTE CONSIDERED AN EVIL COLOUR? When was the last time you saw a blonde witch? WHAT DO BRUNETTES MISS MOST ABOUT A GREAT PARTY? The invitation WHAT DO YOU CALL A GOOD LOOKING MAN WITH A BRUNETTE? A hostage WHO MAKES BRAS FOR BRUNETTES? Fisher-Price

A dog walks into the doctor’s.

KNITTING IN THE USA A highway patrolman pulled alongside a speeding car on the freeway. Glancing at the car, he was astounded to see that the blonde behind the wheel was knitting! Realising that she was oblivious to his flashing lights and siren, the trooper cranked down his window, turned on his bullhorn and yelled, ‘PULLOVER! ‘NO,’ the blonde yelled back, ‘IT’S A SCARF!’

SALES SPIEL Two salesmen were driving through Wales. As they were approaching fairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch they started arguing about the pronunciation of the town’s name. They argued back and forth until they stopped for lunch. As they stood at the counter one salesman asked the blonde employee, ‘before we order, could you please settle an argument for us? Would you please pronounce where we are ... very slowly?’ The girl leaned over the counter and said, ‘Burrrrrrr, gerrrrrrr, Kiiiiiiiing

I’M GOING TO THE ZOO, ZOO, ZOO This guy needs a job and decides to apply at the zoo. As it happened, their star attraction, a gorilla, had passed away the night before and they had carefully preserved his hide. They tell this guy that they’ll pay him well if he would dress up in the gorilla’s skin and pretend to be the gorilla so people will keep coming to the zoo. Well, the guy has his doubts, but Hey! He needs the money, so he puts on the skin and goes out into the cage. The people all cheer to see him. He plays up to the audience and they just eat it up. This isn’t so bad, he thinks, and he starts really putting on a show, jumping around, beating his chest and roaring, swinging around. During one acrobatic attempt, though, he loses his balance and crashes through some safety netting, landing square

‘Doctor, I’ve got a cricket ball stuck up my backside.’

in the middle of the lion cage! As he lies there stunned, the lion roars. He’s terrified and starts screaming, “Help, Help, Help!” The lion races over to him, places his paws on his chest and hisses, “Shut up or we’ll BOTH lose our jobs!”

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT 1. Living on Earth is expensive, but it does include a free trip around the sun. 2. Birthdays are good for you; the more you have, the longer you live. 3. How long a minute is depends on what side of the bathroom door you’re on. 4. Ever notice that the people who are late are often much jollier than the people who have to wait for them? 5. If ignorance is bliss, why aren’t more people happy? 6. Most of us go to our grave with our music still inside us. 7. If Lidl is lowering prices every day, how come nothing is free yet? 8. You may be only one person in the world, but you may also be the world to one person. 9. Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once. 10. Don’t cry because it’s over; smile because it happened. 11. We can learn a lot from crayons: Some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, some have weird names, and all are different colours... but they all live in the same box. 12. Everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler. 13. A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour. 14. Happiness comes through doors you didn’t even know you left open.

STREET CANVASSING After walking for a few minutes, Paul the copier sales trainee turns to Mike his sales manager with a look of amazement on his face and says ‘Mike, will you have a look at that shop over there, I thought that London was supposed to be expensive but that shop is as cheap

‘How’s that?’

as chips. Mike says, ‘Paul you’re right, Suits £10.00, Shirts £4.00, Trousers £5.00, I think that we should buy a job lot and take them back to the office. We would make a tidy profit selling them to the whole sales team. Paul says in agreement, ‘Mike that is as good an idea as you’ll ever have, but I’m pretty sure that you have to pay taxes on the sales profit. The shopkeeper will never let us have more than one each if he thinks that we’re going to make profit from them and make our fortune in fashion. Mike thinks and says, ‘Paul, I’ve got an idea! You can do the best business accent out of the pair of us. You go in there and do the talking and I’ll just stand behind you and say nothing. He’ll never guess we’re salesmen.’ ‘OK Mike’, agrees Paul, ‘I’ll do the talking, you just stand there and look business like.’ So the two salesmen go into the shop, where the owner greets Paul politely. Paul then proceeds to do his best normal likeable person impression. ‘I need to re-stock my own wardrobe can I have 20 suits, 20 pairs of trousers and 20 shirts please?’ Upon hearing this request from Paul, the owner smiles, takes a look at Mike as well then asks Paul ‘You’re salesmen aren’t you?’ Quite bemused, Paul replies, how did you know that we were salesmen? The Owner replies; ‘This is a Dry Cleaners mate!!’

BANGED TO RIGHTS A man was stopped by the police around 2 a.m. The officer asked him where he was going at that time of night. The man replied, “I’m on my way to a lecture about alcohol abuse and the effects it has on the human body, as well as smoking and staying out late.” The officer then asked, “Really? Who’s giving that lecture at this time of night?” The man replied, “That would be my wife.”

‘Don’t you start’

WITH YOUR CUSTOMERS

As technology improves, the use of online and offline channels to communicate with target customers is becoming an ever more increasing consumer demand. Neopost and The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) have combined their extensive industry knowledge to create a guide for creating Multi-Channel Communication Campaigns.

To find out how to get more from your database go to: www.dma.org.uk/guide/data-guide

DATA RULES! •

Inaccurate data costs businesses and fundamentally impacts on their performance

The average organisation loses 12% of its income because of bad contact data, through wasted marketing spend and resources as well as lost productivity

But the hidden costs may be even greater – 28% of those who have had problems delivering email because of bad data say that customer service has suffered as a result, while 21% experienced reputational damage

data should be collected based on your business goals

of businesses dependent on databases have reported that they believe some aspect of the data they hold is:

Accurate customer data is critical to the successful implementation of a Multi-Channel Communication programme. It is also a must have for all businesses. The Experian Global Data Report 2014 found the following:

HOW TO

People continue to value direct mail and printed communications from brands, finding that it plays a seamless role within their connected worlds, offers some qualities not found in other comms and is an essential part of the overall brand experience.

Direct mail has long played a key role in communication with customers. This could be for marketing or transactional mail such as invoices, statements, etc. There is a perception that mail has fallen out of favour and has been superseded by the ostensibly cheaper alternative of email, however recent research by the DMA dispels that theory.
