Can you take up the PassIT! baton? PASSIT! is an annual fundraising campaign run by the registered charity Proskills raising much needed funds and awareness for the PrintIT! Schools into Industry programme, which encourages young people to work in the Print, Paper, Packaging and allied industries. Last year PrintIT! Ambassador, Duplo UK and its London Calling partners ran the gauntlet and raised £4,340. For 2016 you need to all to get involved and help raise more for PrintIT! PassIT! is available to any print, paper or packaging company who want to take part. Led by Duplo UK, the race began in February 2016 and the baton will be passed from company to company until December 2016. Participants have the flexibility to select the month they would prefer to fundraise during and then you’re all set to go. Last year’s fundraising campaign activities included cake sales, charity barbeques, long distance runs and cycles, training services for free in exchange for donations, charity fun days and much more. PassIT! encourages businesses within the printing industries to get involved and support PrintIT! in any way possible. PrintIT! is a nationwide education initiative that has been teaching students about the print, paper and packaging industries since 2005 with 150,000 pupils and nearly 2,500 schools taking part in the programme to date. The vital funds raised for PrintIT! will be used to improve the programme’s materials, contribute to schools visits into industry and the development of brand new learning activities and competitions. The charity Proskills is dependent on the industry to fund PrintIT! as it no longer receives funds from any other source. Jonathan Ledger, CEO of Proskills UK Group commented: “We are all very grateful that Duplo UK has agreed to lead our PassIT! fundraising campaign for 2016, but Duplo alone cannot help us achieve the key industry ambition to showcase the industry to young people and to encourage them to take up careers in the sector – we need you all to be involved! Gone are the days when PrintIT! can be supported from our reserves or other sources. It’s time for the industry to come together and help us keep PrintIT! vibrant and live for future generations of printers, paper manufacturers and more. Don’t be indifferent, get involved and make a difference.” Proskills UK, together with Duplo UK are reaching out to all companies in the industry who would like to get involved. They welcome small and independent businesses to large international corporations. They are asking for any interest
to be filled out on their website, www.proskills.co.uk/printit-passit This webpage also includes all the information you need to know about the structure of the PassIT! fundraising campaign, ideas to raise money and awareness, how Proskills and Duplo will support your involvement and highlights from last year’s PassIT! campaign. Sarah Crumpler, Marketing Manager of Duplo UK said: “Duplo has been supporting PrintIT! since its inception in 2005, we believe that initiatives such as this are key to driving fresh new talent into our industry by educating and enthusing young people about the opportunities available to them. I’d encourage suppliers and printers alike to get involved in the PassIT! campaign and have some fun raising money and awareness for an initiative which is an investment in our future.” With a larger reach and more flexible industry involvement, Proskills and Duplo UK aim to double the fundraising impact! Help them to make the 2016 PassIT! fundraising campaign one to remember. Thank you for your support! For more information, please contact the team on: 01235 833 844 | info@proskills.co.uk | www.proskills.co.uk/schools-into-industry. The Printing Charity’s Chief Exec. steps down AFTER 12 years Stephen Gilbert, the Charity’s Chief Executive and Secretary, is taking early retirement. The Trustees would like to thank him for his drive and vision that have transformed a little-known organisation into a vibrant, national charity. During his time as Chief Executive, he developed a new strategic direction for the Charity, which saw the Charity relaunched in 2010 as The Printing Charity and the granting of a second Supplemental Royal Charter in 2014. The latter is a lasting memorial to his work as it enables the Charity to respond to changes in the print industry and help more people in new ways.
Under his leadership, the Charity has formed partnerships with other charities, organisations, and trade associations to help more people of all ages. He has also been instrumental in initiatives, such as the annual Print Futures Awards, to help train the new generation entering the UK printing, publishing, packaging, and graphic arts sectors.
When he joined in 2003, the number of people the Charity was helping was dwindling. By 2015, the year the Charity celebrated the 150th anniversary of the granting of its first Royal Charter, the Charity helped over 1,000 people, exceeding its 2015 target. Stephen Gilbert said: “I’m grateful to the Trustees for the opportunity to retire a year early. I have enjoyed the 12 years I spent with the Charity and I’m delighted to be able to leave on a high in a year where we have almost doubled the number of people helped in 2014. Of course I will miss all the people I have worked with and who have made this achievement possible. I feel now is
the right time to pass the Charity on to the next generation to cherish and protect and deliver the vital work that it provides. “I would like to say thank you to the team I worked with who have helped me make this happen. I’m so proud of them and everything that they have done and we have achieved together. “I’m looking forward to an easier pace of life although I intend to remain in the charity sector carrying out part-time and project work. To all the many friends I have made down the 12 years, thank you for your friendship and support. I hope that we will be able to stay in touch.” www.theprintingcharity.org.uk

New Epson Super-fast, 64-inch printer EPSON has announced the launch of the latest addition to the SureColor SC-P series line-up, the 64-inch width SC-P20000. Combining new superfast printing speeds with the same superior photo quality already seen on current SC-P models, it is ideal for high volume production print environments who do not wish to compromise quality for productivity. As you would expect from a production device, the SC-P20000 is very robust while incorporating a range of innovative technologies and features that make it very easy to operate. Designed for commercial print and copy businesses the SC-P20000 is ideal for any organisation looking for a cost effective inhouse production solution. The SC-P20000 can create high-quality, large-format POS, shortterm outdoor and interior signage, exhibition and display graphics, promotional graphics and photographs. The printer comes with a permanent PrecisionCore MicroTFP printhead for producing outstanding results up to 2400 x 1200 dpi, even at the highest print speeds. This is coupled with high-precision media feed technology, including a newly developed camera based paper feed stabiliser and media inductive roller system, to ensure the printer operates smoothly even when unattended. Martin Johns, product manager, Epson UK, said: “We understand that the market has been waiting a long time for the next generation of our highly popular Epson Stylus Pro 11880 and, with the SCP20000, we have created a significantly superior successor. This printer combines new rapid printing speeds with the same high output quality that Epson customers have come to expect, while delivering a range of new features and enhanced usability.”
In order to deliver the high quality expected by the marketplace, the SC-P20000 includes a number of features to help ensure the most accurate, precise, productive and reliable results. For excellent colour reproduction, a new Epson UltraChrome Pro 10-colour inkset consistently delivers fantastic looking prints. Blacks will be deep and rich thanks to new high density photo and matte black inks. Better gradation with reduced graininess is achieved thanks to the inkset containing four shades of black ink, and Multi Size Droplet Technology (MSDT), while a new printhead structure means fewer vibrations and more accurate ink droplets and dot placement. To ensure consistency without the need for expensive add-ons, the Epson Colour Calibration utility means users can easily manage their colour reproduction. The SC-P20000 not only produces great results,
but it makes operation and maintenance clear and simple, allowing users to enjoy hassle-free production printing. Getting started is easy with a clearly illustrated user guide and colour LCD Panel. When it comes to handling, changing and switching media, the process is quick and effortless. During printing, a transparent printer cover window and roll cover window allows users to check the status of printing and remaining media. After printing has finished, the position of the printhead means that it can be cleaned by the user, along with the ink cap, to help save on maintenance costs. User efficiency and workflow can be improved further with an optional Adobe post script module; while an optional HDD allows jobs to be reprinted directly from the printer panel, without the need for a PC. www.epson.co.uk
Easier Weeding with 123! THEMAGICTOUCH has marketed their unique range of 123Flex and garment vinyl products for many years with the current range now in excess of over 160 different colours and effects. However, as with all flex products cut using traditional plotters, the transfers need to be weeded, which is considered as probably the most laborious, tedious and costliest part of the garment decoration process. However, innovation is on its way to help. TheMagicTouch announce the introduction of “easy-2-weed” a new improved feature for the existing white 123Flex at no extra cost. Using the latest gravure precision engineering during the manufacturing an embossed effect on the hot melt backside is applied enabling cut lines to be more visible thus making the weeding process easier and quicker. This unique innovation will apply initially to the white 123Flex with other colours and products to follow in the future. The 123Flex with its lower tack carrier sheet
and 123Flex Premium version with the higher tack carrier sheet, for more precise and complex designs, are recognised as the best value flex products on the market. Both versions offer the unique option of lower temperature, as low as 120°application, to ensure mixed fabrics and performance fabrics don’t scorch or leave heat
press marks on the garments. Contact TheMagicTouch direct to receive your samples of the new innovation: sales@themagictouch.co.uk www.themagictouch.co.uk

the Mutoh 426UF, an A3+ LED UV printer designed for printing personalised products, labels and gadgets. Since its launch at Sign and Digital last year, the printer has been installed in many locations, delivering

Jeff Biggs, managing director of Colourgen, comments, “Colourgen will be focusing very heavily on the excellent range of Mutoh printers, particularly those models that are brand new to the UK market. Also we are actively encouraging signmakers to see the capabilities of those printers that are ostensibly outside of their core business, such as the ValueJets 426UF and 405GT, that could open doors to new applications, incremental revenues and increased profitability.” www.colourgen.com
Mimaki adds Light Black high-performance MIMAKI has announced that a light black ink will be added to its range of SB410 sublimation ink spot colours from February 2016. The light black joins the recently released neon yellow and pink fluorescent inks, which are ideal for low-volume, high-quality use in fashion and sportswear and swimwear. This addition will expand apparel production possibilities for users and will increase the versatility of the TS300P-1800 wide format printer; a dedicated dye sublimation inkjet printer for apparel and textile applications. The new light black inks will be available in two litre ink packs and the TS300P-1800 is scheduled to demonstrate some of the innovative and creative capabilities of the inks at FESPA Digital 2016 in March. “These new spot colours can add real value to
fashion and sportswear,” states Stephen Woodall; National Sales Manager – textile and apparel at Mimaki’s exclusive UK and Irish distributor, Hybrid Services Ltd. “The new light black improves the already high print quality, enhancing photographic images and gradations even further. Alongside the fluorescent pink and yellow inks, users now really have the capability to create highly unique garments.” He concludes; “The fluorescent samples we have produced on the Mimaki TS300P-1800 are spectacular, so we anticipate that combining this with the new light black will deliver even more eye-catching output. We look forward to demonstrating this to visitors to FESPA Digital in March.” www.hybridservices.co.uk 34 | CLASSIFIEDS | QUICK PRINT PRO | MARCH 2016

Roland DG’s latest addition to their Texart range of sublimation technology is the XT-640. With a print speed of up to 63m2/h and a wide colour gamut including orange and violet Texart inks; the XT-640 delivers outstanding productivity, exceptional print quality and renowned reliability. Finally Print Product Manager, Mark Elvidge will be on hand to demonstrate the workflow advantages of the powerful new VersaWorks Dual RIP software which features both postscript and PDF RIP engines for superior file rendering and spot colour generation tools for quick and easy printing of white and gloss files. For Mac OSX users, Mark will also be demonstrating Rolandprintstudio, an exciting RIP and print management software for Roland DG machines. Route One Adds Perfect Service THE success of its online print operation Route One prompted Rotherham general commercial printer Bluetree Design & Print to add perfect binding to its list of services with investment in a Horizon BQ470 perfect binder from IFS. “We set up Route One in 2012 as the trade arm for the Bluetree business,” E-commerce Director James Kinsella explains. “the brand has grown very quickly which we put down to our slightly different approach, rather than just offering competitive prices Route One’s primary focus is on service and its relationships with clients.” He continues: “Route One already produces a lot of stitched books but customers have been increasingly asking us for perfect bound options. It is important for us to have full control of production and quality management so if we were going to offer perfect binding it had to be something we did in house.” IFS was the first port of call as the business already had a StitchLiner. “We did look at other options but having a StitchLiner we were aware of the Horizon quality, ease of use and reliability. It is our reputation that is on the line with customers so we needed to be sure.” The small-footprinted 1,350 books per hour PUR BQ-470 four-clamp perfect binder is ideally suited to mid-range soft back book production with higher production speeds, instant make readies for runs-of-one. It can bind up to 65 mm
(2.55”) thickness and offers fully automated set-up through an intuitive icon based LCD touchscreen. The investment follows the addition of a Xerox iGen 150 to support the group’s output from existing iGens, B1 and B2 Heidelbergs and two large format HP Scitexs. “We also needed a system that could handle both litho and digital work,” states James. “The perfect binder does that and also gives us the
flexibility to easily change the size of jobs. This is what we need in a market where runs are getting shorter and shorter.” He concludes: “The BQ470 has allowed us expand the range of options we can offer to the resellers we partner with and produce a greater variety of book size choices” www.ifsl.uk.com www.route1print.co.uk

22 | DIGITAL IMAGING | QUICK PRINT PRO | MARCH 2016
Spring is in the air Spring is in the air, or will be by the time you read this, and the longer days also bring the start of the exhibition season for the print trade. As the core of this column from the start has been digital imaging, it’s no surprise that Martin Christie should headline the first, and most comprehensive of these, for that section of the industry.…
T
HE PHOTOGRAPHY SHOW is relatively new as a title, but is the successor to a long line of annual events covering all things to do with cameras, and the capture, print and presentation of images. Since this tradition began when digital technology was little more than a novelty, it has witnessed a remarkable transformation in how we process what we see and chose to save and share. At one point it looked as if photography, as a discipline, would go into decline and be absorbed into the general media soup, but instead it has thrived as the technology has put the potential of image making into the hands of the masses, and thus encouraged a wider interest in everything related to it. For good or bad we are bombarded by images, not just daily, but minute by minute, and though most quite rightly disappear into the ether to be lost forever, a good many are worthy of being turned into something more permanent if only for sentimental reasons. So the print industry will always have a place in modern culture, at least for the forseeable future, and photography, in all its various guises, will have its part to play in it.
This year the Photography Show will probably host the widest variety of options from the most simple camera to the most sophisticated — wider than ever before reflecting the many ways that snapping our world and our ways has taken a hold of popular demand. At the one end the technical arms race to develop more complex specifications based on evolving technology, and at the other a desire to return to something more basic with just one button where simplicity is its own beauty. There’s a place, and a consumer for both, and every variation in between. The Photography Show is at the NEC, Birmingham, from 19th to 22nd of March, which is the week before Easter. The significance of the dates is that it starts on a Saturday and runs till Tuesday. Unlike a standard work day trade show, this is a consumer led expo with a strong trade influence. This provides a broad exhibitor base and provides for a wide range of general and special interests. For the trade visitor it gives you the option of visiting at a weekend, rather than taking a valuable working day, and even, given the nature of the event, the possibility that other
family members might enjoy the visit. Obviously all the major brands are represented, not just with cameras, but printing and other related kit. So you have the like of Canon, Epson, Fuji and Ricoh alongside Nikon, Sony, Olympus and Panasonic. And there are a couple of names more familiar to photographers that have refused to be drowned by the digital tide in Pentax and Leica. As well as the headline products, there are those equally important contributors like Adobe and other software specialists not just being there but actively giving demonstrations and discussions on all matters relevant. Because it’s a public show, there’s very much a feeling for visitor involvement and entertainment which gives it a particular buzz, and the large crowds attracted daily are a reassuring sign that there is still plenty of business to be done. The significant thing about a consumer directed exhibition is that it’s not just dictated by what the trade wants, but equally by what the customer expects, and as such is a very direct thermometer of current trends and demands. The distinction between trade and public has been largely
MARCH 2016 | QUICK PRINT PRO | DIGITAL IMAGING | 23
eroded by the phenomenon that is the world wide web as we all know. But the importance of meeting face to face with the buying public cannot be overestimated as the relationship works both ways. It’s all very well comparing prices and specifications on a computer screen, but it’s only when you have the product in your hands that you can really know if it’s the right purchase for you. This is true for a camera, as much as it is true of any printing service. The net may have its place, but it can’t provide that essential contact in the real world that actually benefits both parties. It’s a point that I have stressed before in these pages, but is worth repeating, that the hands on exchange at the counter is the most significant advantage a retail outlet has over an internet based competitor. You get to hear what the customer actually wants, which is not always what they may have originally asked for. Technology has empowered a whole new generation of potential print consumers, but hasn’t necessarily equipped them with any of the necessary knowledge or skills needed to provide print ready files or images. That’s why they need to talk to a sympathetic human being with that knowledge rather than a machine with a confusing amount of options. I also find that a public exhibition is a bit of a reality check to some of those who spend most of their time in the trades ivory towers, particularly those who work in marketing and public relations. All those glowing descriptions of the very latest product can start to whither under the experience of a user who has purchased it and found them wanting. It should be an essential right of passage for anyone who thinks dealing with the public is easy. The final point about an exhibition like the Photography Show, or any similar worthwhile event, is what I call the serendipity factor. That is the pleasure of finding something useful or interesting entirely unexpectedly. It’s coming across something, often tucked away out of the main spotlights, that you would never have found otherwise, because you never knew it existed. You would certainly never have found it on a search engine, because you were never looking for it. I don’t know what this year’s find will be at the Photography Show, but I’m sure there will be something. Around the sides of the main exhibitor platforms are dozens of smaller stalls featuring all manner of gadgets and products from the technical to the simple — from sophisticated colour management and calibration to cutting cardboard mount and stretching canvas. There can’t be many exhibitions that have such a wide range of diverse products and services. That’s what makes it such an interesting expedition, and why it is so appropriate for the digital print industry as we have all had to adapt to changing times and customer demand. While embracing new technology, we still need to preserve some traditional skills which can only be provided by the direct counter service, and not the impersonal interchange of the internet. If we lose that we may become as redundant as the Kodak Box Brownie (google it if you’ve never heard of it!). Although having said that, giving current trends in the novelty of the basic, someone will probably have re-invented it by the time I get to the NEC. The Photography Show is open 10am till 6pm daily apart from the last when it closes at 5. www.photographyshow.com
KEEPING IT IN FOCUS
AS mentioned photography now spans a massive range of products and possibilities, more than could ever have been imagined a decade ago. Digital technology has enabled image capture not only by cameras, but many other devices including tablets and phones. This has had a profound influence, not only on how people take images, but how they view them and actually relate to therm.
vivid-online.com
Because they are mostly shared electronically where previously they would have been printed, and taken so casually, they are no longer treasured or appreciated in the way they would have been if a film had to be taken or prints anxiously awaited. This may seem a simple and obvious point, but if you think about it, has had long term implications for our handling of images. Because the electronic version transmits so quickly, a printed version is expected to be produced just as fast. And because the quality looks good on a portable device the print is assumed to be of similar quality and appearance despite being presented in entirely different way. The world is being viewed through a high resolution backlit screen, not the hard copy reality. Almost certainly a reaction to this rose tinted — or rather sRGB tinted — world, is the popularity of very basic film photography in Lomography, actually celebrating the lack of quality by a simple device, and extoling the virtue of patience in processing. Even the Polaroid — that often frustrating self developing plastic toy — has become trendy again, as has that ultimate temple of horrendous self portrait, the PhotoBooth. While sportsmen, film stars and even Presidents and politicians go out of their way to shoot selfies that make them look attractive and important, others strive to look as ordinary and old fashioned as possible. Such is the wonder of photography that there is a place for all. At the top end of technology, it will be interesting to see where the current developments lead. It was assumed that specification would naturally progress with digital camera resolution — measured in megapixels — just increasing year by year. Once six megapixels was the standard for a professional level DSLR, then it was twelve, then twenty four. But now manufacturers have hit the forty eight megapixel ceiling they seem to be having second thoughts, at least in the short term. In the days of film, manufacturers could develop their cameras and lenses, and produce a better product, but the size of the film and the cost of processing, was the same. With digital, more pixels mean bigger file sizes, mean bigger and faster memory cards, more processing power and more storage. Photographers are baulking at this financial escalation without a significant improvement in quality and or, a commensurate increase in the fees paid by clients. Increasing the pixel count has produced other technical issues. The greater the number of sensors, the more sensitive the captured image can be to errors caused by focusing, vibration and electical noise and interference. So bigger is not necessarily better, at least not yet, until other issues have been resolved. For the moment the manufacturers main attention seems to be not on the headline grabbing big guns, but on the medium spec models in the 20 to 24 megapixel range. Nikon is just launching a D500 model, successor to a much cherished series, which on paper specfications alone — only 20.9 million pixels and small frame sensor — may look like a step backwards, but may well prove to be one of the smartest camera moves of the year. There is a certain amount of misplaced snobbery amongst some photographers comparing camera sensor sizes and spec, but my experience is that there is not as much difference in performance as many would like to claim. Then there is the old elephant in the room of whether digital has really surpassed film, or how you would rate a 35mm negative in terms of equivalent megapixels. I shall try and shed some light on this and more next month.

CARBON Balanced Paper, the initiative that enables printers and their customers to boost their environmental credentials, has been re-launched in the UK, administered by CarbonCO in partnership with international conservation charity World Land Trust (WLT). The re-launch of the Carbon Balanced Paper initiative marks a significant step forward for printers to source paper that has been specifically Carbon Balanced, enabling them to help their customers meet growing environmental targets and differentiate themselves as market leaders in environmental responsibility, as well as offer a ‘value-add’ service to attract new and prospective eco-conscious customers. Carbon Balanced Paper offers a simple way for printers, paper makers and distributors to balance the carbon impact of the paper they use through the work undertaken by WLT. As part of its activities, WLT has identified areas of forest which, through protection and reforestation projects, can offer opportunities for specific Carbon Balanced Programmes. Carbon is offset or ‘balanced’ through the purchase and preservation of ecologically important forestry under imminent threat of clearance, which then ‘locks’ carbon that would otherwise be released. www.carbonbalancedpaper.com

PEFC releases new ‘Forests Matter’ video
Brands of Office Papers THE Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) has released a new outreach video, ‘Forests Matter’, to promote the values and benefits of responsibly-sourced forest products. The new video highlights the facts that globally some 1.6billion people rely on forests, and that two out of three land species live in them. Forests need to be sustainably managed so that they can continue to provide a wide range of benefits for future generations. In the video, PEFC underlines the fact that it promotes sustainable forest management practices, based on a local stakeholder approach, and uses independent third-party certification and accreditation. PEFC connects forests to the marketplace, helping businesses and companies to provide transparency and reassurance to consumers in their product offerings, with thousands of companies around the world now producing, buying using PEFC-certified products. Stocking and selling PEFC- certified products helps companies meet consumer expectations while helping to secure future supplies of responsiblysourced products. PEFC’s first global consumer survey clearly demonstrated that there is growing demand for more environmental information to be displayed on packaging to help consumers make informed choices. 54% of consumers said that they trusted environmental labels that are displayed on their packaging. It also demonstrated that consumers want companies to label with more than 80% of respondents wanting to see companies sourcing certified material from sustainably managed forests to use a certification label on product. PEFC, as the world’s leading forest certification system, has certified more than 260 million hectares of forests to PEFC’s internationally recognised Sustainability Benchmarks, supplying more than 16,000 Chain of Custody certified companies with responsibly sourced timber and wood products, such as those used in producing fibre-based paper products such as packaging. Today, more and more companies from SMEs to global brands are keen to demonstrate that the fibre they use in their materials comes from a certified sustainable source. This is important as consumers are increasingly conscious of the impact of their purchasing decisions. PEFC has been working hard with stakeholders to spread the message of sustainable forest management, in order to support and promote the expansion of forest certification and help to grow the demand for certified forest products. This includes organisations such as the Consumer Goods Forum, who have recognised PEFC certified products as providing companies with verification of legality and providing a low risk of controversial sources which contribute to deforestation. The CGF brings together more than 400 retailers, manufacturers, service providers and other stakeholders, with members including global players such as Coca Cola, IBM, Johnson & Johnson, Kellogg’s, L’Oréal, Nestle, Proctor & Gamble, Tesco and Asda-Walmart. Commenting on new outreach video, Alun Watkins, who heads up PEFC in the UK said, “We have developed this new communications tool to provide a snapshot of the PEFC programme; what it involves, why it matters and what companies can do to help secure a future for the world’s forests.” The new PEFC outreach video can be viewed at: http://bit.ly/PEFC-Video

PhotoReal 3D from StackaWraps A leading manufacturer of innovative 3D replicas has launched a new range of furniture and signage that looks so much like the drinks it’s promoting that it’s guaranteed to make customers thirsty. PhotoReal signage and furniture is the latest creation from StackaWraps, a North West company that already works with the top four advertising agencies in the UK supplying its patented pop-up product replicas. The PhotoReal furniture uses realistic and sensory print to create 360 wraps that look exactly like a glass of beer or a cup of coffee - creating a thirst-inducing focal point for café exteriors, beer gardens or pop-up bars and restaurants at events or festivals. The bespoke covers can be emblazoned with any logo, and StackaWraps are offering the chance for potential customers to see how their branding would look splashed across one of the eye-catching replicas. The StackaWraps studio will produce a free, no obligation mock-up on Photo Real furniture for any company that sends across its logo. StackaWraps is also looking for trade distributors
for PhotoReal, which could be anyone with a network of contacts within the retail, leisure or events industry who could use the PhotoReal furniture to attract footfall and attention to their brand. Richard Peter, founder of StackaWraps says: “PhotoReal is a totally fresh concept because it combines photo realistic photography with durable furniture, creating a lifelike effect which will remind consumers how much they would
like a beer or a coffee or whichever product it’s promoting. The material that we’ve used is also much better suited to outdoor advertising than fibreglass - it won’t crack in the heat or the rain, and the covers can be changed to reflect new products.” PhotoReal furniture is unique because it’s flatpacked, and easy to assemble, which is the perfect solution for festivals or corporate events where hauling around conventional furniture and signage can be a real hassle. StackaWraps has chosen beer and coffee as the initial products to develop within the PhotoReal line, but it envisages moving onto other concepts to meet demand. The technology behind PhotoReal furniture could be used to replicate any item from drinks to perfume bottles. The PhotoReal furniture has already received rave reviews from existing StackaWraps customers who are impressed by the way the realism of the replicas can be transferred to furniture. More information about becoming a trade distributor for PhotoReal, or sending across a logo for a free mock-up can be found at www.stackawraps.com

Print on envelopes INTEC Printing Solutions Limited and Canon, have announced a new partnership providing Canon customers with niche envelope printing requirements. When ‘ABC Imaging’, one of Canon’s key accounts, required a dedicated digital envelope printing system Canon looked beyond their own world class portfolio and identified that Intec had developed the perfect system to meet their client’s exact needs! ABC Imaging is a global company with more than 33 branches worldwide and provides print solutions and digital document management services to a wide range of market sectors. Investing heavily in Canon hardware and services, they had a need to produce high quality envelopes and turned to Canon for advice. Canon recommended the Intec CS4600 Envelope Printing System, and ABC Imaging therefore visited the Intec showroom in Poole, Dorset and brought with them, a range of envelope samples for testing — and were very impressed with what they saw. The Intec CS4600XF ran all the samples with no issues and could also print C4 lengthways increasing throughput to over 900 envelopes per
hour. Running plain and window DL was equally impressive with speeds of around 3,500 envelopes an hour, in full colour. ABC Imaging were shown how easy it was to disconnect the specialist envelope feeder, away from the main print engine and print multi-media applications up to 400gsm and 1,321mm in length allowing banner, landscape A4 and multi-page fan fold applications. “ABC had a specific need to print onto a wide range of envelopes and needed the additional applications offered by Intec’s unique CS4600XF solution. The system excels at producing the expected variety and range of short run jobs covering circa 30,000 + envelopes per month,” states Kerry Button, Intec Sales Director (Europe). The Intec CS4600XF and CS5600XF are the most cost-effective, productive and flexible solutions for short run four and five colour on demand envelope applications. ABC Imaging expect to be running around 30,000 envelopes each month and this will continue to grow as more customers take advantage of the new service. “During our initial discussions with Canon it was obvious there was a synergy and our solutions
would work in total harmony,” says Kerry Button Intec Sales Director (Europe). “There is no doubt that where appropriate, by including our products as part of their overall solution, Canon add even more value and allow their customers to enter new lucrative and less competitive markets which are currently demonstrating strong growth.” The Intec CS4600XF Envelope Printing System — with its capability to cope with a wide range of envelope sizes and media weights - was the perfect choice! www.intecprinters.com www.canon.co.uk
Print on glass A new collaboration between Southern Counties Glass and specialist British photographer Richard Osbourne, coupled with the print capability of a Mimaki JFX200 and JFX500 from CMYUK is resulting in some stunning – and practical – art installations for interiors. Southern Counties Glass has focused on manufacturing painted glass splashbacks for the kitchen industry for the last 15 years, and Director Derek Churchill saw the potential to take the products to the next level, by digitally printing high resolution images directly onto the glass. It’s a move which has expanded their reach from kitchens to other applications ranging from shower enclosures, wall cladding, corporate signage and even wall art in public buildings. Derek explained: “We were already spray painting the panels and using solid colours, and I saw an opportunity to create truly bespoke panels through digital printing. “We’ve been in business for 70 years now so our glass working skills are second to none, and we knew we wanted to do the printing ourselves. We spent two years looking for the right printer and working out the best pre and post treatment methods to ensure a hardwearing yet beautiful result. “I linked in with CMYUK at an open day and after working through some options with them through months of testing, we purchased a Mimaki JFX200. “Once we had mastered the technical side, we focused on the photographic element, as we wanted to offer a complete solution including images that are optimised for these kinds of applications. “We’ve teamed up with Richard Osbourne, a British photographic artist who specialises in images printed in large sizes, and his work is now seen by more than eight million people in Britain each year on the walls of hospitals, conference centres, offices, leisure centres and private homes. “We now have a licence to use 4,000 of his works, which makes this a great opportunity for people to bring stunning images into their own environments.” Southern Counties Glass recently invested in a new Mimaki JFX500, increasing the size of panels it can print from 2400 x 1400mm to 3100 x 2100mm.
Derek added: “Printing photographic images onto glass offers a high class finish with shine and definition. To achieve the best from this, you need the fewest number of joins possible – plus our customers are always pushing the boundaries as far as installation size goes, so the new printer was a necessary investment to stay ahead of the game. “Our complete focus on glass, and our skill in handling this tricky substrate, makes us unique in this market. Working with the four biggest kitchen industry suppliers in the country we carry out installations across the UK, and we now produce show-stopping pieces for printing companies that don’t have the experience with printing onto glass. “As well as offering the Richard Osbourne collection we can print any high res. image onto glass and customers can either use their own image or choose one of ours at no additional cost. They can also pay to use a stock image from a library such as Getty if they wish. A panel with a printed image costs just 20-25% more than a painted panel.” The company has significantly increased production. They’ve also focused over the last 12 months on developing their marketing, with a completely refurbished showroom with a photographic gallery, a redeveloped website and a stunning new brochure featuring the Richard Osbourne images. SERIOUS FOURPLAY A woman was out golfing one day when she hit her ball into the woods. She went into the woods to look for it and found a frog in a trap. The frog said to her, “If you release me from this trap, I will grant you three wishes.” The woman freed the frog and the frog said, “Thank you, but I failed to mention that there was a condition to your wishes. That what ever you wish for, your husband will get ten times more or better!” The woman said, “That would be okay,” and for her first wish, she wanted to be the most beautiful woman in the world. The frog warned her, “You do realise that this wish will also make your husband the most handsome man in the world, an Adonis, that women will flock to.” The woman replied, “That will be okay because I will be the most beautiful woman and he will only have eyes for me.” So, KAZAM — she’s the most beautiful woman in the world! For her second wish, she wanted to be the richest woman in the world. The frog said, “That will make your husband the richest man in the world and he will be ten times richer than you.” The woman said, “That will be okay because what is mine is his and what is his is mine.” So, KAZAM she’s the richest woman in the world! The frog then inquired about her third wish, and she answered, “I’d like a mild heart attack.” Moral of the story: Women are clever and always in control. Don’t mess with them.
ROMANCE LIVES ON After 20 years of marriage, a couple were lying in bed one evening, when the wife felt her husband begin to touch her in ways he hadn’t in quite some time. It almost tickled as his fingers started at her neck, and then began moving down past the small of her back. He then slid his hand across her shoulders and neck, slowly worked it down one side, then the other, stopping just over her lower stomach. He then proceeded to place his hand on her left inner arm, caressed downward again, working down her side, passed gently over and then down her leg to her calf. Then, he proceeded up her inner thigh, stopping just at the uppermost portion of her leg. He continued in the same manner on her right side, then suddenly stopped, rolled over and became silent. As she had become quite aroused by this caressing, she asked in a loving voice, “That was wonderful. Why did you stop?” “I found the remote,” he said.
FOUL PLAY A man went to a pet shop looking to buy a parrot. The shop had several parrots but one was priced much lower than the others. When the man asked why one was so much cheaper than the others, the pet shop owner assured the man that he did not want the cheaper one because it had a very foul mouth. “I’ve tried everything, but I can’t get him to stop cussing”, he explained. Eager to save some money, the man bought the parrot, sure he could teach the bird not to cuss. He too tried everything to stop the parrot’s foul mouth. Finally, in frustration, he put the bird in the freezer to cool off. After a few minutes, he opened the freezer to find the parrot with a totally changed attitude. “Please, I’ll NEVER cuss again! Please let me out! By the way, what did the chicken do?”
NO BULL A young man stopped at a local restaurant after a day of roaming around in Mexico. While sipping his tequila, he noticed a sizzling, scrumptious-looking platter being served at the next table. It looked good. It smelled good. He asked the waiter, “What is that you just served?” The waiter replied, “Ah senor, you have excellent taste! Those are bull’s testicles from the bullfight this morning. A delicacy!” The visitor, though momentarily daunted, said, “What the heck, I’m on holiday down here! Bring me an order!” The waiter replied, “I am so sorry senor. There is only one serving per day because there is only one bullfight each morning. If you come early tomorrow and place your order, we will be sure to save you this delicacy!” The next morning, the man returned, placed his order, and then that evening was served the one and only special delicacy of the day. After a few bites, and inspecting the contents of his platter, he called to the waiter and said, “These are delicious, but they are much, much smaller than the ones I saw you serve yesterday!” The waiter shrugged his shoulders and replied, “Si, Senor. Sometimes the bull wins.”
A DISH BEST SERVED COLD Did you hear about the new restaurant called Karma? There is no Menu — you get what you deserve!
PATERNITY TEST A married couple rushed to the hospital because the woman was in labour. The doctor said to the couple, “I have invented a new machine that you might want to try, it takes some of the labour pains away from the mother and gives it to the father.” So the married couple decided that they would try this. So the doctor hooked the machine up and put it on 10% of pain switched from the mother to the father and the husband said, “I feel okay turn it up a lot more.” So, the doctor turned it up to 50% and the husband said, “why don’t you just put it all on me because I’m not feeling a thing.” The doctor warned them “this much could kill you if you’re not prepared.” The husband replied, “I am ready.” The doctor turned the machine up to 100% but the husband didn’t feel a thing so they went home happy with a pain free labour, but when they got home the postman was dead on the front drive!

ENTREPRENEURS TIP A young man asked an old rich man how he made his money. The old guy fingered his worsted waistcoat and said, “Well, son, it was 1932. The depth of the Great Depression. I was down to my last nickel. I invested that nickel in an apple. I spent the entire day polishing the apple and, at the end of the day, I sold the apple for ten cents. The next morning, I invested those ten cents in two apples. I spent the entire day polishing them and sold them for 20 cents. I continued this system for a month, by the end of which I’d accumulated a fortune of $1.37. “Then my wife’s father died and left us two million dollars.”
PROFESSIONAL ADVICE A fellow has been learning to be a balloonist and takes his first solo flight. Unfortunately the wind gets up; he is blown off course and is forced to land. He is in a paddock close to a road but has no idea where he is. He sees a car coming along the road and hails it. The driver gets out and the balloonist says, “Hello mate, can you tell me where I am?” “Yes, of course,” says the motorist. “You have just landed in your balloon and with this wind you have obviously been blown off course. You are in the top paddock on John Dawson’s farm, 13.5 kilometres from Canowindra. John will be ploughing the paddock next week and sowing wheat. There is a bull in the paddock. It is behind you and about to attack you.” At that moment the bull reaches the balloonist and tosses him over the fence. Luckily he is unhurt. He gets up, dusts himself off and says to the motorist, “I see you’re an accountant.” “Good Grief,” says the other man, “you’re right. How did you know that?” “I employ accountants,” says the balloonist. “The information you gave me was detailed, precise and accurate. Most of it was useless and it arrived far too late to be of any help.”
A husband and wife had a fight.
TAKE A SEAT AND A LONG BREATH As a young boy, Joe was completely obsessed with tractors. He had pictures of tractors all over his bedroom walls; he had tractor toys, tractor T-shirts, a tractor carpet, and duvet cover, the whole works. He ate, drank and slept tractors. On his 17th birthday he was thrilled to get an invitation to go to a tractor factory nearby and test-drive a brand new tractor. His excitement was incredible as he told his family and friends. The great day came and he went to the factory for the test-drive. Unfortunately something went terribly wrong with the tractor when Joe was driving it and it flipped over, trapping and breaking Joe’s leg and fracturing his skull. He was so upset and tried to sue the tractor company for negligence. But the company would have none of it and told him there was no liability and He could get lost! You can imagine he was very annoyed with tractors after this and vowed to shed them from his life completely and forever. All the posters came down, the toys were given away — tractors were GONE. Many years later, Joe went into a bar for a drink. Inside, the cigarette and cigar smoke was terrible but through it he saw a beautiful girl seated at the bar on her own. Tears were streaming down her face. Joe asked her what was wrong and she said that the smoke was making her eyes sting and stream with tears. With that, Joe looked around and then took a huge breath, sucking in all the smoke. He then walked outside into the car park and blew all the smoke out again. He goes back into the bar where the air is now clear and sweet and sits down next to the girl. “That was amazing!” she said, “How did you do that?” “No problem”, said Joe … “I’m an ex-tractor fan.”
Wife called her mum: ‘He fought with me again; I am coming to stay with you.’
CORNERS FIRST A sales lady calls her boyfriend over and says, “Please come over here and help me. I have a neat jigsaw puzzle, and I can’t figure out how to get it started.” He asks, “What is it supposed to be when it’s finished?” The sales lady says, “According to the picture on the box, it’s a tiger.” Her boyfriend decides to go over and help with the puzzle. She lets him in and shows him where she has the puzzle spread all over the table. He studies the pieces for a moment, then looks at the box, then turns to her and says, “First of all, no matter what we do, we’re not going to be able to assemble these pieces into anything resembling the tiger on that box.” He takes her hand and says, “Second, I want you to relax, and then…” he sighed, “lets put all these Kellogg’s Frosties back in the box.”
NEIGHBOURLY TEXT A guy sends a text to his next-door neighbour: “Bob, I’m sorry. I’ve been riddled with guilt and I have to confess: I have been helping myself to your wife when you’re not around, probably more than you. I know it’s no excuse but I don’t get it at home. I can’t live with the guilt any longer. I hope you’ll accept my sincerest apology. It won’t happen again.” Feeling outrage and betrayed, Bob leaves his wife and puts the house on the market. Next day the guy sends Bob a second text: “I really should use spell check! That should be ‘WiFi’.”
CHEERS HONEY A couple are sitting in their living room, sipping wine. Out of the blue, the wife says, “I love you!” “Is that you or the wine talking?” asks the husband. “It’s me,” says the wife. “Talking to the wine.”
Mum: ‘No dear, he must pay for his mistake…
COPY SALESMEN Two young men applied for a sales job. Both applicants, having the same qualifications, were asked to take a test by the sales manager. Upon completion of the test, they missed only one question. The sales manager went up to one of the guys and said, “Thank you for your interest, but we’ve decided to give the job to the other applicant.” The salesman said, “But why, we both got nine questions right?” The sales manager said, “We made our decision not on the correct answers, but on the one you missed.” The salesman asked, “And how would one incorrect answer be better than the other?” The manager replied, “Simple Simon the other salesman put down on question number five, ‘I don’t know,’ you put down, ‘neither do I’.”
SALES QUOTE One night, Tim the telephone salesman was walking home when, all of a sudden, a thief jumped on him. Tim and the thief got tangled up and began to wrestle. They rolled about on the ground and Tim put up a tremendous fight. However, the thief managed to get the better of him and pinned him to the ground. The thief then went through Tim’s pockets and searched him. All the thief could find on Tim was 25 pence. The thief was so surprised at this that he asked Tim why he had bothered to fight so hard for 25 pence. “Was that all you wanted?” Tim replied, “I thought you were after the two hundred pounds I’ve got in my shoe!”
