Urgent input needed on Print Trailblazer The BPIF are asking for the whole industry’s help to ensure single standard apprenticeships do not reduce levels of expertise in the industry. In March 2015 a consortium of employers led by James Buffoni of Ryedale Group Ltd secured the trailblazer (a new employer-defined standard for apprenticeship programmes) for the industry. The standards are employer owned, relate to specific occupations, and feature a graded end point assessment. The trailblazer secured is to develop a Level 3 standard that covers pre-press, press and postpress (finishing). The government awarded the trailblazer as a core with options, with print as the core and the options as pre-press, press and post press (finishing). Through many focused meetings, the consortium has produced a standard which has been reviewed by the industry and, following feedback, adjusted and submitted to Government. This standard was approved by the Trailblazer panel but it was approved subject to certain conditions being met. These conditions are what the BPIF are seeking input on. The condition applied by the government panel is that the options are combined so that
there is a single standard and an apprentice would need to master all three areas i.e. prepress, press and post-press before they would be able to pass their apprenticeship. Several drafts have been resubmitted in order to represent the views of the consortium as well as to the Trailblazer panel conditions. The feedback has been that the position from the panel has not changed and they are still insisting that it is a single core standard. This essentially means that any new apprentice in the printing industry would need to master pre-press, printing and post-press before they would be able to complete. The BPIF believe that this requirement is impractical because it is not realistic to expect an apprentice to reach the level of technical and practical knowledge and expertise across all of these areas, to a level that employers require from their staff. The concern is that this requirement may therefore reduce
Call for entries to the Print Futures Awards The Printing Charity is calling for entries to the Print Futures Awards, which are grants of £1,500 to help people aged 18 to 30 years train for careers in printing, publishing, packaging and graphic arts or develop their existing roles in the industry. People are eligible to apply for an Award if they are UK residents and: intend or are studying for a printing, publishing, packaging or graphic arts qualification; work in print-related organisations and want to undertake short courses to develop their workplace skills; and are apprentices or studying for NVQs in print-related organisations. The closing date for applications is 30 April 2017. For more information and an application form, please see www.theprintingcharity.org.uk/printfutures-awards-2017 Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed in London in early June by a panel of judges from across the industry sectors and winners will receive their Awards in London on 20 July. Neil Lovell, The Printing Charity’s Chief Executive, says: “The annual Print Futures Awards, which are a Printing Charity initiative, are part of our Education & Partnerships programme to help people gain qualifications and develop their workplace skills, as well as help attract and retain new talent in the industry.” This year’s Print Futures Awards are sponsored by SAXOPRINT, The Book Trade Charity and Unite the Union GPM & IT Sector, and supported by the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF), the Journalists’ Charity and St Bride Foundation. www.theprintingcharity.org.uk
overall levels of expertise compared with those achieved under the existing apprenticeship training approach. It would have significant impact for some companies on pay rates as there would be no difference between the three roles. The BPIF see no value in us going back to the panel again, however, as you may have seen in recent newspaper reports, the Institute for Apprenticeships (IfA) is well underway with the key appointments to the board announced this week. Print sits under the Engineering & Manufacturing Route Panel which will be made up of industry representatives and not civil servants. On that basis the BPIF believe that the current challenge on our trailblazer could be resolved if they could speak directly with the panel. What you can do: To make this happen BPIF need your support “if you believe that a single standard will be inappropriate to our industry or have a specific concern please get in contact with BPIF Programme Director, Ursula Daly, at ursula.daly@bpif.org.uk or visit www.britishprint.com/printtrailblazer and submit your support on our website, so we can approach the IfA with employer backing”. Closing date for input is 31 March 2017.

Insight opts for Mimaki JFX200 UV LED printer Bristol-based full service branding and print company, Insight, has recently invested in a Mimaki JFX200 UV LED flatbed printer from i-Sub Digital. Insight says it selected the printer because it ‘outperforms everything else in its price range’. Insight was officially launched in 2010 after Kevin Davidson and co-founder Tom Simpson completed two years of careful planning. They created a team-focused, customercentric, high-quality full service print and branding provider. Now, their team services business and retail environments, working closely with design companies or directly with brands on a broad range of projects – including the whole branding/rebranding process from prototype to finished printed product. Insight’s innovation director Kevin Davidson explained why they chose the Mimaki printer: “Insight is best known for creating high quality, speciality bespoke projects, but we were still outsourcing some of our work. We needed to bring more of our printing in-house and we wanted to be able to print to a much broader range of substrates. We also wanted augmented quality control and a more streamlined production turnaround. “Investing in a new printer gave us more control of the whole process. Tom and I did some research and spoke to some people and it quickly became obvious that the Mimaki JFX200 was the perfect solution.” The JFX200 flatbed printer is able to print on a vast number of substrates including 8’ x 4’ rigid boards up to a thickness of 50mm, at up to 1200 dpi, with quality further augmented through variable dot printing down to a four picolitre drop size — and it does all this at a speed of up to 25 square metres an hour. As well as the primary CMYK ink set, the Mimaki JFX200 ink options include white ink, clear ink, a primer, varnish, and a choice of hard, flexible and fully flexible inks for thermo forming applications. Thanks to its cool, long-life LED lamps, operators can print to more substrates, including thin and heat sensitive materials. Kevin continues: “Now the Mimaki fits right in with our production schedules. It’s perfect. We can print and
prototype a project to make sure the customer is happy before production goes ahead. It helps us get even more insight into the client’s needs and ensures the print fits the finished job. It also provides great scope for special effects — for example layers of varnish help create an embossed feel. It always produces a brilliant finish. We can take the project straight from the Mimaki to our Zünd digital cutter. The inks are cured straight away so there are no problems with cracking and chipping, the job’s just printed, cut and finished, Simple.” He concludes: “We purchased the Mimaki from the team at i-Sub, and they were great. Emma Plant gave us a detailed demonstration and answered all of our questions with informed insight. The installation engineers were helpful and knowledgeable and they were always on hand to answer questions or resolve issues. They had been recommended to us and we would happily recommend them to anyone else. It was one of the rare times we have dealt with a company that matched our level of service. When we buy our next machine it will certainly be a Mimaki and our first call will be to i-Sub.” Emma Plant at I-Sub comments: “The Mimaki JFX 200 UV printer keeps proving to be the benchmark machine for the segment of the market that it represents. We have supplied many machines since its launch and it continues to offer exceptional print quality at a performance and cost point that is allowing our customers to enjoy the benefits of UV printing. Insight were a pleasure to deal with and it became quickly apparent their business would benefit from the Mimaki JFX ‘s quality, speed and low cost of ownership.” She continues: “Insight produce some amazing work for their clients and their positive approach to what they do is no doubt paramount to their success” www.getsomeinsight.com www.i-subdigital.com
Hartgraph adds digital capacity Hartgraph Print has returned to Heidelberg for a second digital press, a Versafire CV, which runs alongside an existing Linoprint 751. It has been installed at the company’s 14,000 sq ft freehold site in Amersham. “We are still very focused on litho and only recently moved to 24 hour operations in the pressroom,” says Steve Walters, Hartgraph partner with Tony Brooks. “However, digital is an important partner operation and this investment is spurred by technology change. We like the larger 700mm tray and the vacuum rather than suction feed mechanism which will make personalising preprinted sheets much easier. Also the white and clear varnish means we have something more to offer our customers.” Two years ago the company invested in a Speedmaster XL 75-5+L with Inpress Control to run alongside an SM 52-5. At the same time
it upgraded its workflow, taking Prepress Manager and Pressroom Manager. Hartgraph anticipates taking on another operator in the coming weeks. Business is brisk and Mr Walters comments that the new and impressive building has worked on many levels. It impresses clients, gives the company space to accommodate clients with dedicated customer areas and makes those used to the corporate environment more at home. “Subliminally I am sure that when visitors come to quality premises they feel more confident about the quality print we have always prided ourselves on giving,” says Mr Walters. Now the company has a better physical layout, meaning optimum efficiency. It uses Heidelberg plate-setting, printing and finishing kit and workflows and feels secure in returning again to make this investment, confident in the robustness of the kit but also the advice and services support available to them. www.heidelberg.com

Pureprint picks Renz Systems to expand services Pureprint Group has enhanced its in-house capabilities and is expanding its global web-toprint business with investment in five Renzsupplied to solutions. Its large HP Indigo digital facility based in Uckfield, East Sussex invested in the Renz P500 ES and AP360 heavy duty punching systems and a Renz AB 500 HS high speed automated binder to upgrade their wire binding capability. Explains Aaron Archer, Pureprint’s Business Development Director: “We have a very strong and clear production process and excellent customer service. Maintaining that was paramount in our decision to make this investment. “We have comprehensive in house binding capabilities but with our growing calendar, diary and document products we needed to invest in a wire binding system which could handle high volume quality production. The new systems will help us support the production needs of our key customers and the extra capacity will enable us to increase our on-demand production support for the global web-2-print business.” The versatile P500 ES and AP360 can handle all types of book and calendar punching production with ring wire, plastic comb and coil options. They enable fast die changes, incorporate two part split dies for book and calendar work. Bespoke professional dies are available on request. The highly productive AB 500 HS high speed, semi-automatic production binding machine for books, calendars and skip binding can handle wide range of different paper formats. There is touch screen assisted setup, horizontal paper feeding for easy product loading, automatic closure table and automatic product delivery onto a shingle conveyor. The spend also included an Argos L 380 Coater and an Argos L 380 MGFE feeder from the Belgium manufacturer represented exclusively in the UK by Renz. The Argos Cold UV Coater’s unique cold curing technology eliminates the risk of burning any substrates and releases zero ozone emissions. It incorporates an air knife to handle lighter weight paper, features roller position visualisation and has a larger diameter roller for a superior finish. It offers a competitive cost
per page and energy consumption is reduced by 50% through a special function that puts the UV lamp in sleep mode. Pureprint’s system includes an automatic feeding unit. Adds Archer: “The systems were suited to true print on demand production which is fundamental to our business approach. They are capable of handling short and longer runs and that flexibility is crucial for our mix of work.” He continues: “We did look at other suppliers but we liked the ease of operation, build quality and service mentality of the team at Renz. We also wanted a UV coating line and to buy them altogether at the same time made sense. “They have been in production from day one and are running exactly as we expected them to. This gives us the confidence to focus on growing this service.” www.renz.co.uk

New Canon press — the Océ ProStream
Canon Europe has launched the Océ ProStream, its next generation continuous feed colour inkjet press. The ProStream combines the best features of Canon’s existing high-performance inkjet technologies with new innovations to take high-speed inkjet to the next level of colour output quality and media versatility. This creates valuable new opportunities for many print service providers (PSPs) by enhancing their capability to deliver high-value variable content applications such as premium direct mail and marketing collateral, personalised catalogues, brochures and books. Christian Unterberger, Chief Marketing Officer and Executive Vice President Production Printing Products at Océ explains: “The ProStream is a natural addition to Canon’s established portfolio of continuous feed inkjet solutions, meeting the needs of progressive customers who are looking for higher quality and improved media choice for sustained highvolume production. “With this new press, customers can now confidently migrate highvalue work from offset to inkjet. This will enable PSPs to exploit the full creative potential of variable data printing to elevate print’s effectiveness within data-led multi-channel campaigns.”
With a printing width of 540mm and maximum print speed of 80 metres per minute, the ProStream offers productivity of up to 35 million A4 pages per month. Excellent output quality is achieved by means of a new high-definition 1200dpi Océ DigiDot print head, which produces sharp images with fine details, smooth greyscales, as well as large areas of solid ink coverage. A new pigmented polymer ink set matches or exceeds offset colour gamut for high quality applications. The press also features new, noncontact flotation drying technology. This minimises physical stresses on the paper and leaves the printed image untouched until dry, enabling dense ink coverage for vibrant colour reproduction. The ProStream incorporates Canon’s ColorGrip paper conditioning technology, ensuring optimal print quality on standard coated and uncoated offset papers from 60 to 160gsm. Peter Wolff, Senior Director Customer Groups Commercial Printer and Production CRD at Canon Europe concludes: “We talk to many customers who are looking for a continuous inkjet press that combines the vibrant colours associated with offset with variable data capability on standard coated papers, allowing for cost efficient white paper solutions with fast time-to-market. With the ProStream, we can now give them that solution.” The press will be commercially available from summer 2017. www.canon.co.uk

The embedded paper library has an intuitive User Interface to support operators. Image quality is comparable to the output from Ricoh’s higher classes of digital colour cut sheet presses. Tight registration, edge-toedge printing and long sheet printing up to 1260 mm will also help meet market demands. Booklet production is a key application for many PSPs so the Pro C5200s has optional Cover Interposer and Booklet Finisher with saddle stitching and folding capabilities. “With the Ricoh Pro C5200s series we can help production printing operations expand their capabilities,” says Benoit Chatelard, Vice President, Production Printing, Ricoh Europe. “Extensive media choice and a range of finishing options previously available only with Ricoh’s higher specified presses enable them to offer fast turnaround short run

For a high performance production printer, the series requires relatively little space for an easy fit in different environments. The Ricoh Pro C5200s series is commercially available now and will have its first European showing at Sign and Print Scandinavia, Stockholm, from 7-9 February. www.ricoh-europe.com

Xerox: Inkjet is a reality for all print providers ‘right now’
Early adopters of Xerox’s inkjet technology say they are seeing measurable business results such as increased page volumes, savings from printing on standard offset coated stocks, and faster turnaround on high-volume transactional print jobs. The Xerox entry inkjet portfolio featured at Hunkeler Innovation Days (HID) in Lucerne, Switzerland • Xerox Brenva® HD Production Inkjet Press — cut sheet inkjet. • Xerox Trivor® 2400 Inkjet Press — continuous feed inkjet with Xerox High Fusion Ink. • Xerox Rialto® 900 Inkjet Press — narrow web roll-to-cut sheet inkjet. Xerox’s lower cost systems make inkjet more accessible and open new business opportunities for print providers. Throughout HID, Xerox will showcase how its inkjet solutions enable customers to move into today’s biggest growth areas including catalogues, books, transactional and direct mail. “The inkjet opportunity is no longer on the horizon — it’s here right now,” said Andrew Copley, president, Graphic Communications Solutions, Xerox. “With our next generation production inkjet presses, customers get the right technology at less cost and space of traditional inkjet presses.” Ramping up direct mail and transactional with Brenva HD — UK-based print, mail and digital communications provider McLays bought the Brenva HD to expand their direct mail and transactional applications. In the first month of production, page volume increased
15 percent, hitting up to 150,000 pages per day on peak days. “We produced more than 1.5 million pages in January with Brenva HD and are confident that we can double that figure in the coming months as the machine moves into 24-hour print production,” said Gary Wheeler, direct manufacturing manager, McLays. “The press performs extremely well with low coverage, light tints and sharp black text, which are critical in our transactional business.” Inkjet printing on standard offset coated stocks with High Fusion Ink and Trivor 2400 — Belgium-based print provider, VPrint, wanted to add more personalisation and quality to its large-volume direct mail business without the cost of using specialty stock made for inkjet printing. The company has been testing the Trivor 2400 paired with High Fusion Ink. “We wanted to print on standard offset coated stock, with offset quality and volume but with all the benefits of production inkjet,” said Thierry Ngoma, plant manager, VPrint. “So far High Fusion Ink and the Trivor 2400 are meeting our expectations — delivering brilliant colour, high speed and the savings from using standard offset coated stocks without the need for any pre or post treatment.” Finishing options boost productivity on Rialto 900 — During HID, Xerox will showcase the Rialto 900 with two new inline finishing options: a dynamic perforator and
second dual high capacity stacker. The dynamic perforator enables the creation of horizontal, vertical or t-section tear offs — such as coupons, reply cards and payment stubs — opening up new opportunities in the transactional and direct mail markets. Additionally, a second dual high capacity stacker enables a continuous operation feature so print providers can keep presses running while unloading the other stacker. These options build on the breakthrough in inkjet innovation of the Rialto 900 introduced at HID two years ago. Today, many print providers use the press to deliver everything from mono book pages to high-quality direct mail applications. UK-based commercial printer Datagraphic has two Rialto 900 presses that produce minute-critical, data-driven transactional print for enterprises across the public and private sectors. “We deliver daily communications, which often need to be printed and processed within hours and the Rialto 900 enables us to produce high-volume, same-day dispatches of business quality documents within a narrow timeframe,” said Robert Hoon, managing director, Datagraphic. In addition to Brenva HD, Trivor 2400 with High Fusion Ink and Rialto 900, Xerox FreeFlow® Core, Xerox FreeFlow Digital Publisher, XMPie PersonalEffect® suite, XMPie Circle and XMPie Campaigns-on-Demand will also be on display at the show. The stand will also feature various application areas and business development resources. www.xerox.com/en-us/digital-printing/ hunkeler. PIXEL PROPHET
DEVIL IN THE DIGITAL DETAIL Last month, as often in previous columns, Martin Christie underlined the importance of taking a portion of manual control of many of the automatic functions of all of our electronic tools; computers, scanners, printers and cameras. As so often happens, this was reinforced by an interaction with a customer at the counter, and an exchange, the kind of which will be all too familiar with those working in print on demand.
[F]
or once this wasn’t one of my customers, but just a random order of standard toner digital prints on card. Not even a big run, but a mere handful of individual A3 prints in some of which, because of heavy photographic coverage, and the thick card, there were minor printing marks visible. Experienced customers know that absolute quality is traded for speed and price, and even on a quality digital press, there will be some compromise for what is essentially an economy service. But here the expectations of the inexperienced kick in, and this customer is studying the sheets with x-ray eyes and talking about his disappointment and how he really expects a reprint free of charge. This type of customer is always difficult to deal with and always has been, especially if the shop is full of other customers and his demands appear to be reasonable to the casual observer. In these social media days it’s even more of a minefield as a rant on a network site can do a lot of harm when the case is only presented onesided, and it’s always more likely for a complaint to be aired rather than praise. A confrontation can easily intimidate junior members of staff, especially if they are not confident in explaining the case for the defence. If the issue involves a costly print job, it’s obviously a very delicate situation to be resolved. In this particular case, it was only a matter of a few prints, and I didn’t get directly involved. After the customer had gone, and I had a free moment, out of curiosity I checked out the contentious prints and the customer’s details. He was, at least according to his business card and his smart website, a professional photographer. So why, my first thought, was he choosing a cheap alternative for portfolio images rather than a more expensive, but higher quality inkjet print? Did he even know the difference, as many people who now only exchange images via the internet? A quality print is the ultimate statement of an image’s true quality. So why would you want to compromise your professional presentation with an inferior product? My curiosity was now turning into more
vindictive research, so I retrieved his print images from the shop’s computer. I checked out the file information normally embedded in every digital file; not just the date, time and file size you get from the thumbnail, but the real data that exposes the full truth, not only of the file, but the very nature and operational use of the camera, and even its operator. Looking at the image on the screen is one thing, but if you can look into this metadata it gives you a priceless breakdown of exactly what you are looking at, and the facts are your best ally regardless of what the customer may claim. The data is accessed via Adobe Photoshop, Bridge or Lightroom, all part of the Creative Cloud package. In Photoshop it’s under File > File Info which gives you a choice of details from basic, through camera facts to a complex field of statistics which are the actual digital bones of the file and the device that created it. In both Bridge and Lightroom, it is in a more readable form contained in a Preview side panel, and the exact amount of details can be selected through using the Preferences option. Where this is immediately useful is that it will tell you what type of camera was used and
what settings were used to capture the image — giving a clue to lighting conditions, for example — which has the most important effect on the printed result, regardless of how clear it looks on the screen. If it was taken with a good quality camera, there is a chance it will be fine; if it was taken on a phone it may not be, but as ever, the devil is in the detail. If you are not familiar with the camera model, a quick Google serach will provide the answer, and put the rest of the information in perspective. Everything else is then relative to the basic facts. It may be a good camera, but if the settings have been badly chosen, or simply left to the device’s own processor to decide, as is the case with the majority of digital images, the results may be less than perfect. When we look at something, it takes a fifth of a second for our brain to translate the information from our eyes, and sort out colour and issues of light and darkness. The camera has often less than a tenth of that time, and its digital brain cannot draw on the knowledge base a human has without help. Manufacturers have incorporated all manner of settings into modern devices to try

and anticipate different shooting conditions, but ultimately if the operator choses the wrong one, the camera can only do what it has been told to do. The basic camera controls are shutter speed and the aperture of the lens, a bit like our eyes blinking and squinting. When we blink we lose sight of the world for a split second, or as long as we hold the lids shut. For the camera it’s the opposite way round — it sees the world for as long as we hold the shutter open, and therefore let in more light. When we squint we reduce the amount of light but this often makes the subject sharper. In dark conditions we open our eyes wide to allow for it, and this is exactly how the aperture of a camera lens works. And, as much as we can be blinded momentarily by bright light or disoriented when moving into darkness, the camera image is compromised; it isn’t given the time or information to resolve the issue. Shooting speed and aperture are listed in the metadata as values of a fraction of a second, and F numbers, the latter ranging from F2 to maybe F22 depending on what is confusingly called the speed of the lens. The higher number is the smaller aperture, like the squint, the
lower being wide open. A very rough guide, and one around which most basic cameras were set, would be an ideal speed of 1/60th of a second and an aperture of F8 in reasonable lighting conditions. A slower shutter speed risks an amount of movement when the button is pushed, resulting in an image slightly blurred. A wider aperture risks pushing the performance of the lens and thus also losing a certain sharpness in the picture. There is a further factor that
particularly affects digital images, and that is sensitivity to light, measured as an ISO number. Conventional film used to be graded as 100 or 200 ISO for your holiday snaps. Professionals may have gone to 64 for super quality, or pushed to 400 or 800 for low light performance. Digital cameras can push these figures into extremes in the thousands to cope with low light, night-time etc, but the trade off, especially in colour, is noise. That’s the interference in tone
23
caused by the processor trying to decide between one colour shade and another. Beware of high ISO figures in metadata because that may produce unpleasant pixel effects in print that aren’t immediately obvious on the screen. The effect of noise can be reduced by filters in both Photoshop and Lightroom, but that is an advanced option, and should be chargeable. It’s not just the push of a button, and may still not satisfactorily correct a fundamental file error. This is a simple guide but at least armed with these facts you can prove to the customer that the problem is with his file, not with your printer, or something you have done in the process of printing. As with our customer questioning print quality on cheap card, my trawl through his metadata revealed some interesting statistics. A top range Nikon camera, and an expensive prime lens, both virtually new (you can find out the shutter count in RAW data). Total outlay: over £4,000…and he’s haggling over a £2 print! Best of all, with all that expensive technology at his disposal, and a tricky shot of a subject backlit by a bright sky, how did he adjust his camera settings? Automatically…doh!
THE PHOTOGRAPHY SHOW
I don’t know if our customer is going to the Photography Show at the NEC this month, but he could certainly learn a few things if he did. The fourth year now under new management it takes place between 18-21 March, offering visitors the chance to try the latest technology
from leading photography brands and access a variety of seminars, demos and conferences, designed to suit all levels of user. It’s the mixture of trade and public visitors and the broad range of exhibitors which makes this exhibition unique, and also of special interest to the digital print and image trade. With so much of our workflow dominated by images captured by all manner of devices, there can’t be many people

who won’t find something of interest and value in what is both an industry showcase and a market place. If you aren’t planning to visit, you can bet a good number of your customers, or potential customers will be. All the familiar names in hardware and software will be there with their latest offerings, as you would expect, but there are always surprises and novelties. This year it is an attack of the drones inevitably! Well worth the price of admission if you have missed your chance of a free trade ticket, it starts over a weekend so you don’t even need to miss a day of work. www.photographyshow.com

Duplo Top marks for energy efficiency Duplo is top of the class for energy efficiency and environmental campaigns. The print finishing pioneer is celebrating after being accredited for using energy that is 100% generated from renewable resources. Total Gas and Power Ltd has awarded Duplo a Renewable Energy Supply Certificate for its international headquarters, Automation Precision House, in Addlestone, Surrey. Since moving there five years ago, Duplo has launched a series of initiatives to ensure best energy and environmental practices. Starting with a Derby University-commissioned environmental Ecotect Report, Duplo has been on a mission to become carbon neutral. The roof has solar power panels and a bank of wind catchers funnelling fresh air directly into the offices. Sun pipes bring natural light into the building and water collected from rainwater channels is used to flush toilets. Special hand driers reduce carbon emissions by 70%, air source heat pumps regulate the temperature, while recycling points have reduced Duplo’s landfill waste by a third. There is raised awareness for ISO14001 certification, which is already held by parent company Duplo Corporation, while 90% of its sales are now for products sourced from factories that have the same accreditation. Sarah Crumpler, Duplo UK Marketing Manager, said: “Duplo takes its responsibilities to its staff, the communities we serve and to the environment seriously, while staff have some fun at the same time. We’ve organised numerous fund-raising initiatives for charities, often enlisting the practical support of customers and suppliers as well. Duplo’s not just a great and friendly company that has the best print finishing systems on the market, it also has the best staff too who have boundless energy and a commitment to the environment!” www.duplouk.com

York based printer Wood Richardson has announced that it is using FSC accredited paper as its house stock in a bid to be as environmentally friendly as possible and in order to help its customers to make their own informed print decisions. Based on Haxby Road, York, Wood Richardson made the decision to use Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) accredited paper to encourage responsible printing for others and to promote best practice. Alan Coulson, Sales Director at Wood Richardson said: “For years we’ve been an FSC certified printer. It was a strategic decision which made good business sense and proactively encourages responsible printing to our clients. By using FSC accredited paper as our house stock we are trying to help our customers make informed decisions as we work together towards sustainable print solutions.” Wood Richardson works with its clients to ensure that a range of options are considered for every print occasion. recommendations on paper sizes to reduce waste; suggestions on environmentally friendly inks such as vegetable-based inks, making informed decisions about paper stocks and finishing considerations to make the finished product more easily recyclable. One tonne of recycled paper saves approximately six mature trees and 3.3 cubic yards of rapidly diminishing landfill space. Aside from statistics such as these, to be FSC certified makes good business sense too. Businesses who consciously ‘go green’ have been proven to improve market access, achieve higher revenues and enhance their public image. Making the commitment to sustainable forestry is doing a huge job in making a stand against deforestation. FSC certifies forests all over the world to ensure they meet the highest environmental and social standards. Paper from FSC forests are marked with the ‘tick tree’ logo and buyers can be confident that choosing this paper won’t mean harming the world’s forests. At Wood Richardson, in addition to guiding customers through the process of sustainable printing and making responsible choices, the business ensures that through continual investment in its production processes and presses, their equipment is state of the art. By operating ‘computer to plate’ and ‘closed loop colour control’, the number of ‘make ready’ sheets needed are reduced, thereby minimising overall energy consumption. www.woodrichardson.co.uk

Print on Fire Engines The city of Hull are all fired up for their City of Culture 2017. As part of this year’s programme of events for City of Culture 2017, Signs Express (Hull) has provided a full truck wrap for Humberside Fire and Rescue Service The Hull sign makers fully designed and completely wrapped the fire engine at the station using the community brand guidelines for the City of Culture 2017 — an independent company and charitable trust, set up by Hull City Council. The fully operational fire engine will still attend fires and emergencies, but it will also be used to cover events. Seeing the vehicle driving around the local area is sure to turn heads! Signs Express (Hull) was delighted to be involved, with franchisee Rob Gibson commenting: ‘We jumped at the chance to help with this project which is a fantastic campaign for the city of Hull, it’s great to see the engine driving around the local area!’ Signs Express (Hull) provides signage to the city of Hull, as well the nearby towns of Beverley, Hessle, Cottingham, Hedon, Hornsea and Withernsea and have established an excellent reputation locally for excellent customer service and quality signage. www.signsexpress.co.uk/branch/hull
A fleet of 10 Freshlinc trailers now boasts bespoke works of art after vehicle graphics specialists RGVA applied high definition vinyl wraps to them as part of a campaign to encourage people to engage in the arts. RGVA’s highly skilled applications team worked with the Lincolnshire-based fresh, chilled and horticultural haulage business to apply the striking liveries to the 10 refrigerated trailers, that will travel an average 2,500 miles each week across the UK and Europe for the next three to six years. Each 13 metre Schmitz Cargobull trailer features a different famous resident from the Boston and South Holland region who has made a significant impact on the world, including the founder of the Royal College of Nursing, Dame Sarah Swift. Transported — the community arts organisat ion that commissioned the project – asked Freshlinc employees to nominate subjects for the project, and the staff who made the winning suggestions are featured on the respective trailer’s rear door graphics alongside an explanation of their choice. Freshlinc’s Commercial Director, Ashley Holland, says: “Transported aims to bring art into the community, so this is a perfect collaboration as thousands of people see our trailers every single day. We have effectively put an art gallery on wheels. “It’s creative campaigns like this that underline just how powerful truck-side promotions can be in reaching vast audiences.” The self adhesive vinyl (SAV) designs, produced by local design agency Electric Egg, were latex printed on 3M IJ40 laminated vinyl, and are among the most detailed the team at RGVA has fitted to trailers of this size. The pin-sharp reproductions, which were fitted at Freshlinc’s Spalding base over three weeks, illustrate the power of the team’s HP Latex printers and the quality of the 3M materials it uses. Holland adds: “These trailers are literally works of art and we needed to be confident they will look their best for their entire working life. RGVA has a proven track record in the industry, and their work means these spectacular liveries will be seen far and wide for years to come.” www.rgva.co.uk
Print on Racing Cars When award-winning Worcester-based creative communications agency drp were approached by their client Jaguar Land Rover to come up with a highly creative campaign to raise the profile of Jaguar’s race team in Formula E, they knew they would have to ‘think outside the box’. The objective was to encourage all Jaguar Land Rover staff members to get behind the Jaguar Formula E race team by getting them to ‘FanBoost’. The top three drivers with the most FanBoosts are awarded a temporary boost in power in each ePrix — so getting their staff behind it provided multiple benefits! drp’s execution involved a pit stop style structure, featuring a life-size Formula E race car floor graphic. Being mindful of the need for excellent print reproduction, high durability and superb adhesion, drp turned to wide-format media specialists Soyang Europe for their input, with their aluminium foil-based AlumiGraphics material being selected for its ability to meet all those requirements. drp’s Lee Whitehouse takes up the story. “We really needed to create a huge impact with the whole display concept and the floor graphic of the race car was a really key element in this. Soyang’s AlumiGraphics material was perfect for the job.” AlumiGraphics is a versatile, 100% recyclable, wide-format media made from pliable aluminium foil with a white finish that accepts a wide range of solvent, eco-solvent, latex or UV inks. Durable, easy to use, printable direct to the surface with no over lamination required; the material moulds naturally, without heat, and can be applied to virtually any rough or smooth textured surface. David Hunter, sales manager at Soyang Europe also commented, “drp are an incredibly innovative team and it’s always great to work with them on such creative projects. It’s also particularly rewarding to see ground-breaking products like AlumiGraphics being used in such an artistic way.” drp’s efforts seem to have hit the mark, as Whitehouse concludes, “The whole install was further complemented by additional printed communications material and graphics as well as some very passionate staff who toured key employee sites over the course of a week. Initial analysis has been really positive and the client is thrilled with the activity’s impact.” As well as its main Hartlebury, Worcester site, drp also has offices in London and Leeds. Print on Balls
Print on Bean Bags
On your head Jim! Using the latest in toner-based transfer technology the company has developed a new process to personalise football, rugby and various other sport balls with full colour logos and images. Until now the personalisation of balls for the promotions market has been mainly restricted to single colour designs applied using traditional pad or screen printing techniques which involves a degree of set-up and is not suitable for full colour or photographic images and certainly not for individual designs. Using the ProSeries Oki 7411WT white-toner printer and CPM transfer paper full colour images and logos can be applied to almost any type of ball using a modified ball-shaped platen manufactured by the UK’s leading press manufacturer A.Adkins. The process is quick, easy and very durable with the cost per printed panel at less than 10p per image. Over the past six months the company has successfully conducted various trials with leading European ball manufacturers to ensure the various PU surfaces available are compatible to the lowheat application and remain durable. Jim Nicol, Managing Director, explained “We recently produced some personalised balls for a local football club decorated with 18 team member photos which was very well received and offers a great business opportunity for those in the awards and recognition market to develop over the coming months and years”. Using the white-toner option also enables all colour panels to be decorated. We are in good company…
Nettl, the network of neighbourhood web studios has hit 100 locations in the UK. New partners joining in February include Nettl of Inverness, Nettl of Hereford and Nettl of Sunderland. However, it was Nettl of North Shields that claims the kudos of being the 100th Nettl studio in the UK. Peter Gunning, CEO of Grafenia plc, the people behind the Nettl network said “we’re really pleased to welcome so many new businesses to the Nettl family. We’re proud to bring so many talented and interesting characters together and to grow our businesses together.” Nettl is a bolt-on for graphics businesses. It’s designed for printers, sign-makers and designers who want to do more web for their clients. “We speak to potential partners all the time. We see the same common problems. Some have tried to do web in the past and got their fingers burnt. Some have hired a web developer, only to see them leave and take the knowledge with them. Others have built successful businesses, but are turning down entry-level web work because they can’t do it cost-effectively. And some have got really far on their own, but lack the skills to tackle things that clients want like inventory management, Epos integrations or ecommerce.” Billy Searle, who owns Nettl of Cambridge, said, “In an Increasingly tough print market, we wanted to evolve our company to start creating
websites, apps and utilise Ecommerce websites with EPOSNOW tills for higher value sales.” “Some people still say to us, you’re a franchise aren’t you?” said Gunning “No. No we’re not. We don’t use the ‘f’ word any more. Nettl takes the best bits about being part of a branded network, without having the restrictions. Our partners can keep their identity. They get geographic exclusivity. They use our marketing to sell more web, print and display. They use our software and systems to deliver web projects more quickly. And they use our training to teach them how to do it all, with their existing team. It’s entirely up to them how much they adopt.” Dally Purewal, from Nettl of Leeds said “Nettl transformed our business. Before Nettl, there wasn’t really a clear direction of where we were going and how we were going to evolve as a business. However, since taking on Nettl, a number of amazing things have happened. We have attracted new clients, a lot more are coming through referrals and as a result we have become more profitable. Our team is more confident and they’ve learnt new skills. We’re doing a lot more design work, including logos. We have found people are now coming to us at the start of their business journey rather than the end. That’s enabled us to upsell print. We believe through Nettl, the relationship with our clients is stronger. They see us as their team and tend to consult us with every idea they have to market their business.” Nettl plan to double the size of their network. Exclusive territories are still available in most regions. The Nettl bolt-on costs less than hiring a part-time member of staff and less than you might pay a freelancer. Could Nettl help you grow your business? Find out more at www.nettl. com email partners@nettl.com or call 0207 490 0011.

SOMETHING TO SHARE…? Insect Day
An ant walks into a bar with his good friend Mister No, who is not an ant. The bartender says, “I’m sorry. We only serve ants here.” The ant says, “But this is my good friend Mister No.” The bartender says, “Sorry, but I don’t take No for an ant, sir.”
Play it again Sam
“Grandpa, do you mind if I play my new harmonica in here?” asked little Phil. “Of course not, Phil. I love music. In fact, when your grandma and I were young, music saved my life.” “What happened?” asked Phil. “Well, it was during the famous April 1977 flood. The dam broke and when the water hit our house it knocked it right off the foundation. Grandma got on the dining room table and floated out safely.” “How about you?” “Me? Well, I accompanied her on the piano!”
This Lawyer Is Thorough
The solicitor tells the accused, “I have some good news and some bad news.” “What’s the bad news?” asks the accused. “The bad news is, your blood is all over the crime scene, and the DNA tests prove you did it.” “What’s the good news?” “Your cholesterol is 4.5”
Weekly Staff Meeting
Mr. Frobisher always scheduled the weekly staff meeting for four-thirty on Friday afternoons. When one of the employees finally got up the nerve to ask why, he explained. “I will tell you why. I’ve learned that’s the only time of the week when none of you wants to argue with me.”
Poker Face
A man walked by a table in a hotel and noticed three men and a dog playing cards. The dog was exhibiting an extraordinary performance. “That is a very smart dog,” the man commented. “Not really,” said one of the irked players. “Every time he gets a good hand he wags his tail.”

I’m not saying that the customer service in my bank is bad... But when I went in the other day and asked the cashier to check my balance… She leaned over and pushed me!
Must Be the Camera
A photographer was invited to dinner with friends and took along a few pictures to show the lady of the house. She looked at the photos and commented, “These are great! You must have a good camera.” He didn’t make any comment, but as he was leaving to go home he said, “That was a really delicious meal! You must have some very good saucepans.”
Like a Rolling Stone
At my ten-year-old’s request, I loaded my Rolling Stones tunes onto his iPod. “I had no idea you liked the Stones,” I said. “Sure. I like all that old-fashioned music,” he said. “What do you mean, ‘old-fashioned music’?” “You know,” he said defensively. “Music from the 1900s.”
Where’s Your Mother?
I walked into my sister’s kitchen and found my nephew having a snack. “Where’s your mother?” I asked. “She is upstairs, said she was going to take a shower. Hang on, let me check.” He stepped into the nearby bathroom and flushed the toilet. A second later a sharp yell came from upstairs. My nephew walked back out and said, “Yep, she’s in the shower.”

A salesman named Strange passed away. His friend asked the stonemason to inscribe on his headstone, “Here lies Strange, an honest man, and a salesman.” The inscriber insisted that such an inscription would be confusing, for a passer by would tend to think that three men were buried under the stone. However, he suggested an alternative. He would inscribe, “Here lies a man who was both honest and a salesman.” That way, whenever anyone walked by the gravestone and read it, they would be certain to remark, “That’s Strange.”
Strange Headache
Joe was moderately successful in the career, but as he got older he was increasingly hampered by incredible headaches. When his personal hygiene and love life started to suffer, he sought medical help. After being referred from one specialist to another, he finally came across a doctor who solved the problem. “The good news is I can cure your headaches. “The bad news is that it will require castration. You have a very rare condition which causes your testicles to press up against the base of your spine. The pressure creates one hell of a headache. The only way to relieve the pressure is to remove the testicles.” Joe was shocked and depressed. He wondered if he had anything to live for. He couldn’t concentrate long enough to answer, but decided he had no choice but to go under the knife. When he left the hospital, his mind was clear, but he felt like he was missing an important part of himself. As he walked down the street, he realised that he felt like a different person. He could make a new beginning and live a new life. He walked past a men’s clothing store and thought, “That’s what I need: a new suit.” He entered the shop and told the salesman, “I’d like a new suit.” The salesman eyed him briefly and said, “Let’s see. size 44 long.” Joe laughed, “That’s right, how did you know?” “It’s my job.”
Joe tried on the suit. It fitted perfectly. As Joe admired himself in the mirror, the salesman asked, “How about a new shirt?” Joe thought for a moment and then said, “Sure “ The salesman eyed Joe and said, “Let’s see 34 sleeve and 16 and a half neck.” Joe was surprised, That’s right, how did you know?” “It’s my job.” Joe tried on the shirt, and it fitted perfectly. As Joe adjusted the collar in the mirror, the salesman asked, “How about new shoes?” Joe was on a roll and said, “Sure “ The salesman eyed Joe’s feet and said, “Let’s see, nine and a half wide.” Joe was astonished, That’s right, how did you know?” “It’s my job.” Joe tried on the shoes and they fitted perfectly. Joe walked comfortably around the shop and the salesman asked, “How about some new underwear?” Joe thought for a second and said, “Sure “ The salesman stepped back, eyed Joe’s waist and said, “Let’s see size 36.” Joe laughed, “No, I’ve worn size 34 since I was 18 years old.” The salesman shook his head, “You can’t wear a size 34. It would press your testicles up against the base of your spine and give you one hell of a headache.”
The Longest Sentence One friend says to another, “Did you know that the shortest sentence in the English language is ‘I am’?” “Really?” replies the other. “What’s the longest sentence?” “I do.”
The Second Million Two guys walking down the street talking. One says to the other, “I wish I had a million pounds.” The second guy says, “Oh, I’m working on my second million.” “Really?” asked the first guy, surprised. “Yea, I gave up on the first million, didn’t quite work out.”

Car Troubles I feel inadequate when talking with a mechanic, so when my vehicle started making a strange noise, I sought help from a friend. He drove the car around the block, listened carefully, then told me how to explain the difficulty when I took it in for repair. At the shop I proudly recited, “The timing is off, and there are premature detonations, which may damage the valves.” As I smugly glanced over the mechanic’s shoulder, I saw him write on his clipboard, “The man says it makes a funny noise.”

What kind of driver never get a parking ticket? A screw driver What did the stamp say to the envelope? Stick with me and we will go places!
“Are you copying me?” “Are you copying me?”

Who can shave 10 times a day and still have a beard? A barber. What do you call a horse that can’t lose a race? Sherbet What do you call a dentist in the army? A drill sergeant What did the triangle say to the circle? Your pointless! Why does a milking stool have only 3 legs? Because the cow has the udder. What’s easy to get into but hard to get out of? Trouble Did you hear about the guy who died when an axe fell on him? The police are calling it an axe-i-dent.
Ordering In My husband and I both work, so our family eats out a lot. Recently, when we were having a rare home-cooked meal, I handed a glass to my three-year-old and told her to drink her milk. She looked at me bewildered and replied, “But I didn’t order milk.”
Pedantic or what? People say that there is no difference between ‘finished’ and ‘complete’. I say there is...Marry the right person, and you’re COMPLETE.
Marry the wrong person, and you’re FINISHED. 10 reasons why large men are lazy: 1)
“I love you!” “Yea,I ate already.”
