£3 million investment at Taylor Bloxham Printing company Taylor Bloxham has unveiled its latest innovation which is part of a £3 million investment programme designed to place the company at the forefront of the printing industry. The company has added the HP Indigo 7900 to its suite of high tech printing equipment. The new digital press offers improved print quality, colour-matching capabilities and speed, enabling enhanced productivity at Taylor Bloxham’s Leicestershire headquarters. The digital printing upgrade follows extensive investment in the company’s litho facilities at the end of 2017 when they ordered a Koenig & Bauer Rapida 106. Taylor Bloxham also invested over £1 million in print finishing technology last year. Capable of print in colour up to 160 A4ppm, the Indigo 7900 has been installed in addition to the company’s existing Indigo 5000. “With 80 years of experience behind us, we are already experts in high-quality lithographic printing but we also aim to mirror this offer in digital print,” explains Robert Lockwood,
CEO at Taylor Bloxham (pictured). “With this ambitious programme of investment, we now have the facilities to provide a fast and efficient digital print service that will open the door to new markets.” Taylor Bloxham recorded its highest ever pretax profit of over £940,000 last year, despite suffering a factory fire in May 2017 which threatened production. Robert adds: “After the combination of triumph and adversity of the last 10 months, this is the perfect way to kick-start the new year. We are confident that the new presses and finishing
equipment will help us to achieve an even better year in 2018. We are committed to continuously making investments to reduce the costs for our clients whilst maintaining the high-quality of print that we pride ourselves on.” Established in 1938 and employing over 200 people, Taylor Bloxham Group Ltd includes four brands that work together to manage the whole chain of marketing communications. Combined, Taylor Bloxham, FastAnt, Mailbox and Instore offer expertise in print, direct mail, fulfilment design and retail point of purchase. www.hp.co.uk
New Horizons Follow ProCo’s Bindery Review ProCo has completed its review of post press operations investing in a Horizon CRF-362 creaser/folder and a Horizon SPF-200A booklet maker supplied by Intelligent Finishing Systems. These two new installations at ProCo’s Stansted site follow recent investments in a Horizon BQ-270V single clamp perfect binders at both ProCo’s Sheffield and Stansted sites. The Sheffield site was already using the Horizon StitchLiner 5500 with four VAC-1000 collators to complement its stitching capacity. ProCo Production Director Graeme Parry explains the Horizon CRF-362 was needed to enable daily short run folded work for one of ProCo’s web to print solutions. He says: “At the time our 10 year old Digi fold was proving to be too unreliable, and to avoid any detriment to our quality or service to our customers, we looked for an alternative. We chose the Horizon CRF362 for its build quality and operator friendly interface also the ongoing service contracts are more reasonable. Its reliability means we can work to tighter deadlines knowing the machine won’t let us down.” As for the Horizon SPF-200A bookletmaker with the HOF-400 digital feeder and TBC200L top and bottom cutter he explains: “Our previous stitching line was struggling with the demand of short run booklet work and was beginning to cause issues meeting the
demands of our clients. The SPF-200A with the three knife trimmer means work can bypass the guillotine taking one process out which makes it much more efficient reducing any bottlenecks around the guillotines.” With its barcode reader, the system also enables ProCo to deliver greater security measures for its customers: “With the addition of the barcode reader we can now confidently deal with data critical work and get full verification on each booklet that’s stitched. We can then pass that data onto the client. Unlike our Sheffield site where there are three individual stitching lines, at Stansted we needed to invest in a single, reliable well-built machine, which will see us through the next ten years and possibly beyond.”
The Horizon StitchLiner 5500 was previously chosen as a short to medium run system to bridge the gap between higher run quantity work and small run bookletmaker jobs. Says Parry: “Within this space there were a number of options but the build quality and versatility of the Horizon StitchLiner 5500 with four VAC-1000 collators was hard to ignore. We added the two up kit to get even better production numbers on the floor. We already had a four tower collator from Horizon so we were able to use this as a base and build up to the full system we have today.” He added: “The quick make ready times and pre-sets make job changeover quick, and in terms of output we are really pleased with the run rate we see.” The Horizon BQ-270V was chosen as an entry level binder that would be flexible enough to manage variable perfect bound books from runs of one to hundreds. As for ProCo’s relationship with IFS, Parry states: “Overall in dealing with IFS we have found a great partner that understands our production requirements and the needs and demands of the end client. The kit we have purchased gives fantastic ease of use and great flexibility, underpinned by the reliability which we have come to expect from its product offerings.” www.ifsl.uk.com

Foiling and Laminating is about to get faster Vivid Laminating Technologies has raised the bar once again for print foiling and lamination with the launch of their new 20 metre-perminute system. Doubling the speed of the previous model to halve production time is great news for those producing high-end, long-run digital print jobs of up to SRA2. With Express Foiling as standard on the new system users can foil at up to 5m/minute with no extra cost, increasing system efficiency. The use of pneumatic rollers for lamination, splitting and in-feed ensures greater accuracy. Extra pneumatic pressure is applied for a better bond which eliminates peeling off and reduces wastage and also allows standard films to be used to further save money. An integrated temperature control chip ensures that high-quality foiling is produced with ease and consistency. The Matrix offers an Omron PLC Touch-Screen control panel for simple and intuitive job set-up. A wide range of BOSS films and Aqua Aura foils are available for use with the Matrix range. Like its predecessors, this latest addition to the Matrix range is modular so its capability can grow with the customer. It can be purchased as a manual feed system initially with the option to retrofit an Omni Flow Deep Pile Feeder at any point in the future; the Omni Flow automatically feeds sheets into the system to save time and free up the operator to work on other jobs. Similarly, a customer with an existing 10m/min system can add an Onmi Flow secure in the knowledge that, if they upgrade to the faster machine in the future, the Omni Flow will work seamlessly with either model. Vivid Product Manager, Lewis Evans, said “Building on our awardwinning Matrix range, this new system offers all the same benefits of
its predecessor but with twice the speed, the footprint is similar, and the modular design make this system an easy swap-out upgrade over existing equipment”. For more information, visit www.vivid-online.com
Epson SureColor SC-S80600 set in Motion After 18 years as an HP user, Motion in Leicester has traded in an HP 360 Latex model for its first Epson printer, a SureColor SC-S80600. “The accuracy is bang on, the quality is outstanding and it has not only allowed us to supply existing customers with almost photographic quality print results but it has won us new business in the backlit and stickers markets,” says managing director Phil Highton. He turned to Darren Walker at Perfect Colours, a company that supplies large format print solutions, for advice when Motion was finding issues with substrate and image distortion using heat-based latex technology. Perfect Colours invited him to view the Epson SCS80600. “I had never seen such quality on a roll to roll machine, irrespective of whether it was printing on to paper or vinyl,” says Mr Highton. “It is an eco solvent printer so there was no stretch or distortion issue and its ability to print in nine or ten colours and achieve 98% of the Pantone range means we achieve a depth of colour that is exceptional and has given us a stand out advantage with duratrans/backlit work and stickers as well as our core business, POS.” Motion is a Leicester based POS and production company which offers large format, digital print, vinyls, booklet-making and cutting services. The company’s business is 90% from the Midlands but can be from as far away as Leeds, Cornwall, Suffolk and Wales. It handles POS work for customers with high expectations, such as make up and perfume suppliers where lifestyle images are viewed close up, so printed results have to be 100% accurate and eye-catching. Now it has the use of white on roll fed technology to match that capability on its Jetrix flatbeds and the addition of light cyan, light magenta, light black and orange and red alongside standard CMYK for that very top quality look.
The SC-S80600 uses Dual PrecisionCore TFP printheads and Ultrachrome GS3 inks, which give brilliance to images and durability (print can be displayed out of doors for three years without fading). This signage printer operates at up to 95.1m²/hour. “There are faster machines and it is true that sheets take a couple of hours to fully cure but the big advantages are that the quality of the eco solvent SC-S range is great and there is no substrate distortion (and the poor quality results and waste that go with that). That makes it absolutely the right model for our business. It was a good buying decision and we would definitely look at Epson equipment again for future investment,” says Mr Highton. Motion finds Perfect Colours excellent for its advice on equipment and applications but also responsive when it comes to machine service and support. www.epson.co.uk

Paper industry welcomes new apprentices Under the Government’s review of future apprenticeships programmes, and following the development of a new Apprenticeship standard in Papermaking, Essity Trafford Park Mill in Manchester opened its doors to the first intake of new apprentices representing eight paper mills from across the UK. With an industry steeped in history and tradition, but with an ageing workforce, this next generation of ‘budding’ papermakers will embark on a three-year programme which will test their technical knowledge and practical and academic skills to the limit. The industry is constantly evolving and young, talented people are an essential part in its future success. The Papermaking Apprenticeship Programme, developed by industry experts in partnership with Unite the Union and support from The Printing Charity, is aimed at helping young people learn a unique skill, in a progressive manufacturing industry. Jim Lang, UK Operations Director, Consumer Goods, at Essity said: “I started out as an apprentice here in the 1990s, so I can speak from personal experience that apprenticeships are a fantastic opportunity from which to develop a career. It’s great to see a papermaking apprenticeship on offer under the new apprenticeship standards, as this can only help raise the quality of skills within the industry. “We are pleased to be able to host one of the block training events at our Trafford Park Mill. When visiting different companies or sites
within the industry, as the papermakers are doing as part of their course, I always learn something or see something I didn’t expect, so hopefully the apprentices learning can benefit further with this approach.” During the course of the programme, each apprentice will attend three weeks per year of in-depth technical training, delivered by Dr Steve Mann and will cover the science of papermaking, fibres, water and chemical additives, and wet and dry end processes. Classroom training is supported by practical on the job experience on a daily basis within a paper mill environment. Speaking about their new chosen career, Alex, one of three apprentices at Weidmann

TriStar Re-aligns with DYSS digital cutting When TriStar Printers Ltd exited the downturn amongst a flooded and cut-throat traditional small format litho industry, the Blackburn print company re-aligned its business strategy in a concerted effort to add value for its customer base. This strategy involved adding 40% to its floor area to house a large format print department with a Canon Océ Arizona flatbed digital printer and alongside it a DYSS X7 digital cutter from AG/CAD. Commenting upon the change of direction Tristar Director, Mr Abu Ahmed says: “Off the back of the recession, the industry became very price oriented and to thrive as a business, we realised that we had to add value for our customers and also extend our capabilities. We didn’t want only to invest in litho, it was a strategic decision to extend our scope and be a one-stop solution provider. Our aim was to look at new ways to create value for the customer; the DYSS and Océ combination have certainly done that.” Tristar has invested over £300,000 in large format and finishing which has been further strengthened by the recent addition of a new graphic designer, a large format salesperson and a general print salesperson. The transition from litho to large format digital has seen the company supplement its traditional services of brochures, booklets and yearbooks for schools and colleges with large format work that has included shop signage, shopping centre displays, confectionary boxes, PoS displays and pop-ups as well as wall-art, box-board furniture and much more. All manufactured on the new DYSS X7-1624C SuperHead digital cutter and printed on the new Océ Arizona 1260GT that were both delivered
in October 2016, the company now sees the potential of targeting large format work. As Mr Ahmed continues: “The Arizona has a 2.5 by 1.25m bed and it allows us to print direct to substrate whether its card, wood, Dibond, Foamex and much more. All of these materials can be processed on the DYSS X7 with its powerful SuperHead that has a router spindle for cutting tough materials as well as tool slots for a variety of knife and creasing/scoring tools.” “The ability to print direct to substrate with the Océ and cut absolutely anything on the DYSS is winning huge amounts of new business. It’s particularly pleasing to see our existing small format customers take advantage of the new capabilities. The new large format department is giving these customers a ‘one-
stop-shop’ for all their print and packaging needs. In addition, we are gaining enquiries and winning new business from retailers, sign makers and small companies that are looking for pop-up banners and signage, shopping centre display units and back-drops to name just a few projects.” The versatility and diversity of the Lancashire company has expanded exponentially since the arrival of the DYSS and Océ. Referring to the impact of the large format division, Mr Ahmed continues: “We’re an established small format business with a history that dates back to 1982. Suddenly, the large format work has grown to account for 30% of our turnover; we’ve even employed skilled fitters that are out on-site installing commercial projects for customers.” www.agcad.co.uk

IFS unveils new Generation Horizon Die-Cutter
IFS gave the latest generation Horizon RD-4055 die-cutting system its UK unveiling at a special open house event. A group of specially invited guests were introduced to the enhanced solution which now incorporates a Dual Magnetic Cylinder delivering greater accuracy and sharper results, faster. The latest system also features a simple receiving tray ensuring the product and waste are delivered together for cleaner, smoother, operation. Designed to meet the growing demand for short run die-cut products, the RD-4055 has the ability to die-cut, crease, perforate, slit, hole punch and round corner in one process for digital and offset printed substrates up to 0.5mm. The repeat-register function enables the running of multiple up imposed applications with a smaller die to reduce die cost (Up to 5 repeats in a single pass). Simple to use, it can feed, die cut and separate in one pass at a speed of 6,000 cycles per hour. Bryan Godwyn, IFS Managing Director, comments: “The Horizon RD-4055 is an exciting system that allows operators to die-cut a wide range of applications from brochures and folders to point of sale and promotional materials.
“Its quality and productivity ensure it is a cost-effective solution while its efficiency, ease of use and flexibility means it can be contributing to profitability from day one. “We were pleased that so many forward-thinking UK printers were keen to see how this technology might help them elevate their service offering.” www.ifsl.uk.com
Apache ‘FLUX’ Automatic Conveyor UV printer Axzyra has announced the Apache Flux, a small footprint Flexible conveyor fed UV cure printer with swappable product holders (jigs), and using well proven Apache build standards such as, simplicity of design, Ricoh inkjet head technology, robust industrial components, plus an encoder-controlled conveyor / print stage. The return on investment will be quicker when compared to any current static small format flatbed printer due to the higher uninterrupted throughput. The USP is minimum downtime as there are no load / unload stoppages between bed loads. It can be optionally fitted with rear output hoppers for auto unload of items, for example - golf balls or pens. meaning less operator intervention thus higher productivity. Testing has proved there is a three fold increase in throughput for example when printing golf balls, as compared to loading and unloading a comparative sized manual fed UV flatbed printer. There is for example real production data from a customer using a standard flatbed which can currently print 2000 balls per eight hour day, measured against the Apache Flux, printing at 6000 per day. This means
one Apache conveyor UV golf ball printer has a similar production speed to three units of the Apache E6045 printer (600 x 450mm print area) Other common items that can be printed include: casino chips, dog tags, ball pens, mobile phone cases, etc. For further information, please contact Steve Woods: steve@axzyra.com

Ashgate launch large format bookletmaker With digital printing presses now commonly able to print long sheets, alongside existing litho solutions, the ability to finish short volume, larger format books at an affordable price is becoming increasingly requested maintains Lewis Price, Managing Director, Ashgate Automation. This is why the KAS KF 640 and 640T large format hand-held, floor standing bookletmaker and trimmer, manufactured in the UK by KAS Paper Systems are a major breakthrough and the first of their type on the market. Designed to produce a maximum booklet size of 320mm x3320mm and more common sizes like A4 landscape and 12” x 12” it comes in at sub £16000, making it a cost effective investment. Unlike some of it more expensive competitors, it will handle a maximum sheet size of 640mm x 320mm, which means that SRA2 sheets will not require pre-trimming of the short edge on a guillotine prior to producing A4 booklets. It handles a maximum sheet size for A6 booklets and CD 120mm x 120mm booklet production. It is compatible to connect with squarefold units to give booklets a squared spine finish. Simple to use, quiet in operation and reliable, the KF 640 can cater for the very lowest of bespoke run lengths to large digital and litho work, producing up to 1500 books an hour.
These can be up to 25 sheets plus cover (100pp).It has heavy duty 44 gauge staple heads using 44/6mm and 44/8mm staples and a low staple warning system. Features include a pro-clench flat clenched staple system and a high speed fold knife system which eliminates marking. A loop stapling modification is available as an option. A high capacity conveyor

Running at speeds of up to 5,000 sheets per hour on standard creasing applications, a typical run of 250 business cards can be finished in less than two minutes. Commenting on the new unit, Ray Hillhouse, vice-president offline business at Morgana, said: “This latest multi-function finishing unit takes automation to the next level, along with a production speed suited to the busiest of print facilities. Regular formats can be stored within the system for fast and accurate push button production.” Typical production speeds include eight sheets of 21-up business card per minute (=168 cards). Morgana launches Laminator 450 and Pro 450
Morgana Systems, the manufacturer of equipment for digital finishing, has announced the release of the Morgana Laminator 450 and Pro 450 models. The product was previewed late last year at both The Print Show and at Ipex and received an enthusiastic reception. This new high-performance compact machine combines speed, ease of operation and quality, making it the ideal solution for the in-house commercial laminating requirements of many print businesses. Two versions are available, with the Pro 450 featuring a high pile automatic feeder. Commenting on the new unit, Ray Hillhouse, vice-president offline business at Morgana, said: “Lamination continues to grow in popularity. It protects the printed page, making it more durable, whilst also enhancing the appearance of books, boxes, and business
cards. Many printers outsource the task to trade finishing houses, but this adds days onto the production schedule, as well as additional cost to the job. A compact, quality solution is being called for by a great many printers that we see. “Designed for easy operation, the Laminator Pro 450 has a unique “heavy duty” high pile automatic feeder for true load-and-go operation. It features an integrated compressor and pneumatic system for high quality print lamination, on litho and digitally printed work measuring up to 450mm x 700mm. It is the ideal laminator for small to medium sized digital and offset print operations. “For those handling shorter run lengths, the Laminator 450 entry-level version offers semi-automatic operation, a manual feed, with an option to add the deep pile stacker at a later date.”
Measuring just 1,700mm x 730mm the compact, single-phase Laminator Pro 450 has been designed to be both efficient and cost-effective, helping print producers to offer an all-in-one service to customers. Printers will be able to avoid the costly set-up charges and mark-ups that go with outsourcing lamination work to a trade finisher. With its fast production speed and simple to use set-up, the Laminator Pro 450 is the perfect investment for “on demand” print shops. Utilising its deep pile automatic suction feed system, the Laminator Pro can achieve production speeds of up to 1,875 landscape SRA3 sheets per hour, allowing printers to undertake jobs requiring higher quantities and faster turnaround times with minimal set-up, wastage and supervision. www.morgana.co.uk

MetaliK Board for Wide Format printers: another new solution from Kernow Coatings In response to the wide format market showing a growing interest in packaging, Kernow Coatings has developed KernowPrint MetaliK® for fast and efficient production of shiny packaging in gold, silver and rose gold, now available in B2 sheets. KernowPrint MetaliK® is a 345μ cardboard with a glossy front face, while the rear side has a white finish. The MetaliK side of the material (silver, gold or rose gold), offers unlimited print options and pattern effects especially with white inks. The white side of the board remains printable whenever needed. The beauty of KernowPrint MetaliK is that it can easily be cut on flatbed cutting tables – also with laser as it is PVC free – and when folded, it will smoothly fold without damaging the metallisation or the print on the edges. The MetaliK board is printable with UV-curing inks. It is offered to the wide format industry in B2 size (500 x 707mm size) as a standard, further sizes from SRA3 up to 707 x 1000mm can also be supplied on demand. Printers equipped with dry toner equipment will love
the versatility of KernowPrint MetaliK which also runs on most of these with a specifically developed static control technology. The MetaliK board has been extensively tested together with the American company Color Logic. Color Logic offers a unique reflective colour communications system for amazing effects on the silver version of the board.
Mark Geeves, Director of Sales & Marketing at Color Logic says “The Silver MetaliK board from Kernow Coatings has been certified by Color Logic for UV inkjet applications. Color Logic did a visual and spectral measurement of KernowPrint MetaliK silver which met all of our requirements for certification. The silver MetaliK board has excellent applications for the packaging, POP, and signage markets.” Videos of very impressive examples of packaging printed with the Color Logic software are available on the Color Logic website. For those in need of a more rigid or different substrate for their packaging, Kernow Coatings offers an alternative solution with the PVCfree, self-adhesive 50μ KernowJet MetaliK inkjet film. The material, delivered in rolls, can be laminated to any smooth board. KernowJet MetaliK Inkjet is printable with eco-solvent, UV and latex inks. MARKETING TECHNIQUES
WHITE IS THE NEW BLACK For businesses looking to make their mark in 2018, Antalis has advised that embracing innovative new printing technologies such as white toner will be key to tapping into the customer demand for ever more creative paper-based communications.
[L]
atest figures show that despite the prominence of digital marketing techniques, 38% of adults in the UK have bought or ordered something as a result of receiving mail through the post(1) — proving that direct mail’s response rates are actually anywhere from 10 to 30 times higher than that of digital (2). According to experts, the enduring effectiveness of direct mail is because, “giving, receiving and handling tangible objects remain deep and intuitive parts of the human experience”.(3) As such, when it comes to creating stunning paper-based communications that really engage with the customer, it has never been a more compelling time for businesses to adopt the latest paper and print technologies. Susana Marambio, Head of Channel – Retail, Office Reseller & Consumer at Antalis, comments: “Despite the onslaught of digital comms in recent years, it’s heartening to see that consumers still value the tangible aspect of receiving direct mail, proving that it is still an effective marketing tool. “However, although we are seeing more and more brands and marketing agencies reacquainting their love affair with creative papers as a way of creating stand out, it’s important to remember that direct mail has evolved from the mass mail campaigns of the past into a data-driven and targeted solution.” A huge opportunity, for example, lies in the creative inks concept. In particular, the growing popularity of the Xerox® White Dry Ink opens up a world of opportunities to create striking designs on direct mail, invitations and postcards. Available on the Xerox iGen 5 Press, the ink enables white to be printed on coloured substrates by sitting atop either non-white media or CMYK-printed images. It can also provide a bright white base coat for optimising CMYK vibrancy and enabling variable information printing on coloured surfaces. What’s more, when printed in percentages rather than full coverage, white ink can create frost or translucent effects, while manually printing an additional layer of White Dry Ink can increase opacity. Susana adds: “With consumers now expecting to be wowed by beautifully crafted marketing materials, for businesses looking to pack a punch this year by creating cutting-edge paper based communications they must utilise the full suite of tools at their fingertips. “At Antalis, white is definitely the new black when it comes to office printing with the growing popularity of speciality inks such as white toner likely to continue in the coming year. The Xerox White Dry Ink is ideal for broadening the
range of non-white substrates that can be used for invitations, menus, direct mail and other promotional materials. “For those looking to add sparkle and shine to their marketing materials, Xerox® Metallic Dry Inks creates striking silver and gold metallic effects with images, artwork, logos and texts while the Xerox® Clear Dry Ink can add new dimensions to output using spot, flood or textured effects.” For further information please visit www.antalis.co.uk (1), Royal Mail MarketReach; (2) Direct Marketing Association (DMA) data; (3) The Private Life of Mail, Royal Mail MarketReach

PIXEL PROPHET
THE CURIOUS CASE OF THE CHICKEN THAT DIDN’T CROAK IN THE NIGHT Regular readers will know that these monthly columns often begin with a little reflection on contemporary news on the basis that we do not live and work in a bubble, but are affected, to more or less a degree by other things that go on around us. If appropriate, Martin Christie may draw parallels that are more directly a concern in our own domain in print on demand.
[I]
n the scale of things, given the number of crises and disasters worldwide, the fate of a quantity of dead chickens might not seem to a high priority for media attention in this country, yet it managed to occupy the headlines and front pages of several of the popular tabloids because of the enforced closure of half of the nations’s branches of Kentucky Fried Chicken, due to the lack of said birds. Unfortunately for the feathered foul this shortage was not a reprieve from the chopping block as they were already dispatched and boxed in crates in Milton Keynes awaiting an appointment with breadcrumbs and the Colonel’s secret recipe they would never make. The ostensible cause of culinary calamity — perhaps a welcome dietary relief for some — was a motorway crash so extensive that it threw the logistics (nobody does haulage anymore) of newly appointed truckers DHL into such chaos that it couldn’t deliver the goods to the kitchens. Trucks with no drivers in the yard, and drivers in places with no trucks. And for KFC, and all those fast food fans, chickens with no means of getting up the road, let alone crossing it. Forgive me, but we have had motorway pile-ups for over sixty years, several of really appalling carnage. Ever since transport minister Ernest Marples — who had a financial interest in building them — declared they would be the economic lifeline of Britain, they have also brought incidents of chaos and disruption. But as far as I can remember none has ever brought a portion (sorry for the pun) of British industry to standstill. Perhaps because no one was seriously affected, only inconvenienced, it was little more than a good excuse to come up with some cliched
headlines about coming home to roost. DHL were certainly left with more than egg on their face. The whole thing was quietly, and quickly dismissed as “administrative difficulties”, and that was that. A shortage of snacks is hardly a cause for a major conspiracy investigation but it did occur to me that there had to be more to this episode than one simple admin cock-up (sorry another pun there). We have all experienced delivery issues of one form or another, as we are increasingly reliant on them, and they have become a regular routine rather than an exception. Things can go wrong at any point in the chain, from packaging and dispatch, to transport and arrival. They always could. But now we also have computers to add to the equation as well, so the consequences of human error are multiplied by electronic intelligence. When we actually had to know where things where it was simple. Once we started identifying places with numbers and codes it got a bit more complicated because, without one, it didn’t exist, and if there was an error, it couldn’t be found. I’m sure any one of us could fill a whole chapter with delivery blunders. One of my particular favourites was the courier with a consignment of print for the railway that couldn’t find Victoria Station. Last time we looked it was still at the end of the railway line we told him. Not long after “Chickengate” there was a report from one of the many government departments dealing with national security highlighting the potential dangers of an increasing dependence on artificial intelligence in infrastructure, as it could be so easily hacked and generally hijacked, either by Russian gangsters, or teenage nerds. Didn’t need the brains of Bletchley Park to work that one out. Even in this column I’ve mentioned ships in the Black Sea that discovered their satellite navigation systems were telling them they were several miles inland. And don’t even start me on driverless cars...no, anyone who works regularly with computer systems knows how many things can go wrong, even if it’s not always possible to predict the consequences. Ironic then that another government department is pushing for an increasing use of the same technologies in order to “improve” transport systems. I think I can hear the sound of our feathered friends coming home to roost! We may not be able to sort out the nation’s digital infrastructure, but at a much more basic level there are a number of things we can sort and one of them is digital imaging. As much as we try and educate the customer the inevitable pressures of impatience and inexperience will still result in a wealth of poorly captured digital files that are really not suitable for printing without at least some intelligent human intervention. There is justification for this, even though it will mostly not be chargeable, on the grounds that the customer will never blame his or her photography. It’s

the printing that will carry the can. With the majority taken by camera or phone used on automatic settings, or presets not intended for the conditions, there’s always something more that can be done rather than the basic “lighten at the printer end”. That last stop save can be a quick fix but isn’t really a satisfactory solution as you are making one more machine do the judgement thing for you — something that causes most of the problems in the first place. At its simplest it is the contrast between light and darkness that causes most of the problems. That has been an issue for photography from the beginning because, unlike our adjustable eyes, the camera works to specific exposure settings that are set at capture. With traditional film, the photographer dictated the input, now with digital it is more often the camera that calls the shots. So as a simple guide, intended as a quick and time efficient edit, here are some of the basic settings you can apply using Photoshop or Adobe Lightroom to any picture files, either individual or extracted from documents. With the latter, for example you may want to adjust a particular image so that it balances better with those around it which may have been taken at different times. I’m not overlooking RAW files which can be fully processed, but as it’s unusual for a customer to bring in one of those, it’s generally one already processed, so the settings apply whether Jpeg, Tiff or PNG. While Photoshop can handle images saved as PDFs, Lightroom will not accept the format. The first choice is which programme to use. Photoshop will be the most familiar, but can be a little cumbersome if you are dealing with a lot of files, and not using Bridge at the same time to file through them. Lightroom is a bit more long-winded loading, but much better suited to batch processing through lots of images. The most obvious difference in operation is that you open files individually in Photoshop, whereas in Lightroom you can import one or a whole folder. The most versatile function in Photoshop is probably the use of layers, and the best practise is to use them for any form of editing. Create a duplicate immediately above the original and then work on that, so that you then have the previous version to compare directly. There are a number of ways you can attack the highlights or the shadows to reveal detail or cover over exposed areas. By retaining the adjustments in a layer, you can use the opacity or blending feature of that layer to further refine the effects over the original, or if you are entirely happy with the transformation, simply delete the latter and save the new version. Lightroom can perform the same magic with a more particular control panel, which, the Develop mode, also features a before and after option so you can see what you have achieved, and a history panel so you can step back if you have gone too far. Instead of altering or saving over the original, in this case you export a copy. Both Lightroom and Photoshop have a proofing view so you can pr eview the resulting image relative to the printer profile selected. In Photoshop it’s hidden in View>Proof Setup, which should then reveal a list of ICC profiles available. In Lightroom a similar function also enables a simulation of the background paper. I’m concentrating on shadows and highlights here because they are the usual suspects when comparing the image viewed on the screen, bright and backlit, to that which eventually outputs in print, and which is likely to be darken and flatter by its very nature. That’s where a little bit
vivid-online.com
of preventative surgery comes in handy before the customer has seen the result. That’s when you get that all too familiar, didn’t expect it to come out like that moment. If you get to that you’ve already lost a little bit of confidence from the customer’s point of view. You have to try and second guess what the customer expects these days, even if it does mean at some stage being a mind reader. You have to accept they spent a large part of their time staring at a brilliant, high contrast, and slightly blue hue screen and that it is the way their world looks, even before they have started putting fancy filters over it. That’s also why it’s good practise to look at reducing the density of the image for printing long before starting to mess around with the colours because so often the customer, with an inexperienced eye, will announce that there seems too much red, for example, when actually all of the colours are too saturated, it just that they don’t like the red! Changing colour hue is a much more involved process and will almost certainly result in chasing your tail all the way to ending up with a result not much more distant from the one you started with — just a little bit lighter overall! That’s fine if the customer is prepared to pay for your time, or even accept that your opinion is valuable. Otherwise it’s a quick fix and as good as it’s going to get for the price. Just be sure to say it nicely!

SHOW PREVIEW
SIGN & DIGITAL UK UPDATES Sign & Digital has announced that one of Britain’s biggest names in retail, Mary Portas, will be headlining at the sign and display show taking place on 24 to 26 April, at the NEC in Birmingham.
[I]
n keeping with SDUK’s theme for 2018 — Creativity Brought to Life — Mary Portas will deliver an inspiring keynote followed by a Q&A session during the show’s opening day. Crowned “Mary Queen of Shops” by the UK media, retail and brand expert Mary Portas has long been a champion for SMEs. The celebrity guest speaker will use the Q&A session to share her expertise and industry knowledge with the show’s visitors. Mary Portas will also take a tour of the show floor, to meet many of the leading suppliers exhibiting at the show. Rudi Blackett, event director at SDUK, said: “Mary Portas’s continued advocacy for independent retailers and the manufacturing industry makes her a truly inspiring guest speaker for our show visitors and exhibitors alike. “We’re greatly looking forward to welcoming Mary and hope visitors and exhibitors will bring their burning business questions to benefit from Mary’s expert retail knowledge.” Mary Portas, retail consultant and broadcaster, commented: “I’m always excited to discover new emerging techniques from retail, sign and display industries which will be a big part of Sign and Digital UK. The merging of digital and traditional manufacturing techniques is now more important than ever before, and I hope to open a discussion about how these trends will impact SMEs in the modern retail landscape at April’s event. “With my Sign & Digital UK audience, I will aim to cultivate a new confidence in diversification. I look forward to rallying with business leaders from these adapting sectors and offering advice among small business owners who are looking to explore ways of getting ahead of their competitors.” Speaking alongside Mary Portas at SDUK this year will be a stellar line-up of industry experts who will deliver a series of keynote talks, interactive sessions and panel debates across the three-day event.
Interactive new live demo areas and TV studio
Sign & Digital will introduce a brand-new TV studio and three new demonstration areas to the 2018 show For the first time in the show’s history, a series of new practical, interactive sessions, panel debates and keynote talks will take place in the show’s TV studio — Sign & Digital Live – and will be available for viewing on the SDUK website. The full schedule and stellar speaker line-up will soon be announced. Jane Lewis, marketing manager at SDUK said: “Following in-depth visitor research, this year’s show will feature even more practical and interactive features in order to help our visitors discover potential new revenue streams and access expert advice. The Sign & Digital Live TV studio will add both a fun element to the show and be a new hub for business ideas!” Sign & Digital UK has also teamed up with industry specialists to bring visitors a series of live demonstration workshops. Led by experts from Antalis, Spandex and Hybrid services, the live demos will give visitors a practical insight into what can be achieved using newly developed technologies and products. The Spandex team will show visitors how to apply the latest and greatest materials in an energetic Vehicle Wrapping Live demonstration. Gabi Parish, marketing manager at Spandex, said: “Vehicle wrapping is flourishing with more and more manufacturers bringing out new and exciting colours, effects and textures on a regular basis. “The introduction of adhesive systems that make it possible for beginners and individuals
to complete full vehicle wraps is also helping to grow the market. It’s an innovation that has further developed the ease of use and application — you really need to see it to believe it.” Antalis’ Décor Live demo will offer visitors a complete overview of the uses of large format inkjet technology, and will illustrate practical ideas and applications for all types of digital décor. Katie Farr, head of marketing at Antalis, added: “With large format media playing an important role in the visual communications mix, we have designed our new Décor Live demos to offer practical guidance on all types of interior décor. The sessions promise to be fun, informative and engaging, and we urge all attendees to pop by.” With a focus on retail application, Hybrid Services’ Textile Printing Live demo, situated close to the entrance of Hall 18, will present an interactive digital production workshop where visitors can follow a printed textile product from design through to reality. Brett Platt, textile product manager at Hybrid, commented: “The Textile Printing Live demo will be a great opportunity for visitors to take home not only a textile product they’ve produced themselves, but also some inspiring ideas for their business. “Getting up close for even just a few minutes can help those new to the technology appreciate the ease with which textiles can be decorated and attractive products added to their portfolio.” For more information about the free-to-attend event and its live demonstrations visit www.signuk.com/live-demos

THE PRINT SHOW
HYBRID SERVICES TO RETURN Hybrid Services has confirmed that it will return to The Print Show this year after an impressive showing during its debut appearance at the event in 2017.
[T]
he Print Show 2018 will take place from September 18th to 20th at the NEC in Birmingham and organisers have already announced a series of major signings, including HP, Vivid Laminating Technologies, AMS, CMYUK, Axzyra, Kluge International, Signmaster Systems, and D&K Europe. With 27 exhibitors already and the floor plan filling up fast, it has been the most successful first quarter for The Print Show since it was founded in 2014. The Hybrid Services stand was one of the key highlights at The Print Show 2017, after the company opted to use the event to launch two new Mimaki machines — the UCJV150-160 and UCJV300-160. The company has this year taken on a larger stand as it looks to build on its success in 2017. John de la Roche, national sales manager at Hybrid Services, comments: “As Mimaki’s exclusive distributor, we had an excellent show last year, using it as the platform to launch the incredible UCJV Series printer/cutters and are fully anticipating this year’s to be a similarly great opportunity to reach existing and prospective customers—especially within the commercial printing sector. “Hybrid has increased its stand space by about a third, and a number of our resellers have already committed to the show so we’re expecting another substantial Mimaki presence in 2018. “Mimaki’s product line-up sports an incredible variety of ink technologies including LED UV, solvent, textile and water based machines and our stand will represent this with a range of systems on display.” Although Hybrid Services is still in the initial planning stage for The Print Show, de la Roche did reveal that the company will display a number of solutions that demonstrate Mimaki’s ability to cater for a number of key markets. “Exhibitions like The Print Show are always a great opportunity to launch new technology and with Mimaki’s reputation as an innovationled manufacturer, we’ll have a stand full of the company’s very latest print solutions,” de la Roche says. He adds: “We’re keen to enable visitors to investigate new business opportunities and with the breadth of capability we have within
Mimaki’s product range, there are very few printrelated needs that we can’t offer a solution for. “The Print Show is a great platform to engage with the industry. The extra space we’ve committed to allows us to bring further new and innovative Mimaki products to the exhibition, expanding the range of solutions on display and offering a greater variety of ideas with which to inspire visitors.”
I’ve got a Golden Ticket!
Regular visitors to The Print Show will know all about the special Golden Ticket competition, which offers those in attendance the chance to win some fabulous prizes, including a brand new printer. The Golden Ticket giveaway will return again this year, and taking part is as easy as ever. Those that pre-register for The Print Show 2018 will be sent a Golden Ticket in the post, personalised with their name and unique ID number. All you have to do is bring this with you to the event, hand it to one of the team when you sign in and listen out for the competition announcements during the event. Someone who knows all about the value of the Golden Ticket is Daniel Evans, director of UK Print and Promotions, who last year won a new Epson SureColor SC-T5200 after being named as the big winner on day two of The Print Show 2018. Speaking about his win, Evans says he intends
to use the printer to help expand his business and enter new markets: “We’ll be using the printer on work such as mounted print on board, which will be perfect for us. “We’ll also be using it for roller banners, which, at the moment, we tend to outsource to other companies. It’s great to have an Epson printer so we can do this in-house and ensure greater quality.” Evans also paid tribute to how valuable his visit to The Print Show proved to be: “I came to the show to touch base with a few people, find out what’s going on and to generally keep up-to-date with the new technology. There are so many suppliers here that you can get more information from. “It’s a fantastic show. Walking around, there are so many suppliers that we know and some we have never heard of, so getting to know them will certainly benefit me and the business in the future.” www.theprintshow.com

SO Recycle SO Live Connect As the first in the UK to install the innovative SO Live Connect waste management system from SO Recycle, specialist book manufacturer Ashford Colour Press is now running more cleanly and efficiently than ever. This new waste management solution combines intuitive software and the latest in hardware systems, developed to better manage the collection and storage of waste materials. Located in Gosport, this environmentally aware print manufacturing company revamped its recycling processes and capabilities with the SO Recycle solution, that represents a £100,000 investment from the Romsey based waste specialist. At its heart is SO Recycle’s SO Live Connect clever software, which automatically identifies when a bin is full and generates a request for a collection lorry. As a result, collections are only made when needed, lowering environmental impact with less trips being made, and reducing the downtime associated with bin changes. Route One Print see a bright future in inkjet
Route One Print are a company with one eye always looking to the future. Over the last four years they have invested £20 million into their 100,000 square foot production facility and are proud to say that none of their machines are more than five years old. As the first in the UK to install an HP Indigo 10,000 in-line with a Horizon SmartStacker and the fourth to install a Fujifilm Jet Press 720S, the South Yorkshire trade printers are keen to pioneer the latest advancements in printing technology. “We predict that litho will continue to have a strong presence in the future of print while digital toner printers will see a decline in use,” says Adam Carnell, Managing Director, “Digital inkjet technology, on the other hand, could really take off in the next couple of years.” Mr Carnell goes on to say that “We don’t expect the change to happen overnight but, thanks to recent technological advances, inkjet printers are producing high quality products and are much more cost efficient for short runs. That’s why we’re investing in inkjet printing now and will continue to do so.” The company also predicts to see developments towards increased automation at the setup stage rather than high run speeds. www.route1print.co.uk
3D Bioprinting in research and medicine
Three-dimensional (3D) printing is one method of digital bio-manufacturing for both basic biological research and translational, clinical applications. The medical field has used it to create such constructions as 3D surgical models for preoperative planning, to assist surgeons in their procedure preparations, which improves postsurgical outcomes. Examples include generation of cleft-palate models, orthopedic applications, and cardiovascular surgical planning. Other forms of 3D printing for biological applications - such as 3D bioprinting - go beyond such surgical planning applications. 3D Bioprinting (3DBP): 3D cell culture provides a biomimetic model of cell systems for many applications. Use of additive manufacturing techniques is growing, with living cells used for a number of such 3D cell culture applications. 3D bioprinting uses printing techniques to create 3D structures such as living tissue. The “printing” of biocompatible materials and living cells results in homogeneous or mixed-cell 3D structures that ultimately can present a highly organised pattern of disparate tissue components and shapes. In addition to creating biomimetic microenvironments, 3DBP technologies have been used to generate organ-on-a-chip systems for modelling tissue units of function through incorporating both 3D cell systems and fluid flow on a microscale. Other 3DBP strategies and workflows are used to produce 3D biosystems for a number of activities. Many 3DBP technology platforms can incorporate an array of cell types and stromal components, so they can be used to generate tissue microenvironments that recapitulate physiologically relevant systems more accurately than standard twodimensional (2D) culture methods. After fabrication, such 3D cell cultures can be placed within bioreactors to mature or grow over time. In such a workflow, time becomes the fourth dimension in “4D bioprinting.”
March 2018
3DBP uniquely generates spatial gradients of cells, key structural components, and chemical compounds (including primary metabolites) or biological growth factors. The ability to spatially regulate those components comes through precision offered by robotic systems. In addition to generating final 3D structures, 3DBP can be applied to production of tissue-structural subunits for incorporation into final, complex, assemblies (technically, biofabrication). The latter activity is enabled by new tools that can assemble the multiple parts required in advanced biofabrication tasks. Download the complete eBook at: www.bioprocessintl.com

Antalis new research shows paper prevails
With new research revealing a significant consumer preference for printed communications over digital options, Antalis is reminding printers that paper still prevails in a crowded digital market. According to the latest research from Two Sides, 72% of consumers prefer to read printed publications over digital options, with many respondents indicating that reading in print is more enjoyable than reading electronically. What’s more, 52% of consumers prefer to read product catalogues in print whilst 73% feel that keeping hard copies of personal information such as bank statements and letters at home is a safe and more secure way of storing information. Despite the increase in digital marketing over the years, the study has highlighted that online marketing and advertising is relatively unpopular with most consumers, with 68% admitting they do not pay attention to online advertisements. Katie Farr, head of marketing for Antalis’ Print & Visual Communications division said: “From e-books, to digital newsletters through to downloadable catalogues, businesses are saturating the digital market. However, interestingly this new research has concluded that consumers trust, enjoy and gain a deeper understanding of information read in print, as signs of a digital fatigue are becoming more evident. “In line with this, at Antalis we continue to see a shift in the demand for more premium, creative and custom paper options as a way to offer maximum visual impact and really bring a design concept to life. This is increasingly significant for marketeers and businesses who recognise the benefits of a tangible, paper based item as a way of creating cut through. Katie adds: “The time is now for printers to take advantage of stand-alone printed communications or print within multi-channel campaigns and we encourage them to look to inspire and advise their customers on the endless possibilities that paper based communication can bring.” For further information about Antalis please visit www.antalis.co.uk

Gala Graphics invests in specialist materials Gala Graphics, the Rotherham based graphic design and promotional print specialist, has introduced a new in-house dye sublimation printing service as part of a recent £75,000 investment in new equipment. This means that Gala Graphics will be one of only a handful of print companies based in the UK who are able to offer this specialised service, which often has to be outsourced to businesses in other countries. Dye sublimation printing uses heat and pressure to transfer high-quality images onto a variety of materials including fabric, plastic, metal and wood. The process relies on a specialised ink, which when heated changes from being a solid dye to a gas, without passing through a liquid stage. The dye is sublimated into the fabric, so cannot flake off and won’t fade over time, creating a brighter, more premium finish compared to traditional processes. Glen Robinson, Managing Director of Gala Graphics, said: “We recognised that there was demand in the market for printing on specialist materials for a wide variety of industries including visual marketing, textiles and household. As we can now carry out dye sublimation printing in-house this means lead times are significantly reduced. As a result we expect this new service to attract further business from across the UK and Europe, which will create more employment opportunities for local people.” By purchasing this new printer, Gala Graphics can offer a more premium finish on all of its products, whilst also being able to print onto the most delicate of fabrics. The dye sublimation process also offers unlimited colours to choose from as the new technology has the capabilities to produce any pantone required. As part of the £75,000 investment, Gala Graphics has also upgraded its solvent printing capabilities with the purchase of a new Roland TRUVIS 640. With over 10 years’ industry experience, Gala Graphics specialises in producing high quality, bespoke promotional products such as banners, flags, roller banners, leaflets and business cards. The company is based in a custom built facility in Rotherham, which allows the team of experienced designers and print technicians to work side by side, serving customers from around the UK and the rest of Europe, on both domestic and commercial levels. Gala Graphics is a division of Gala Tent, a company with over 17 years’ experience in design, manufacture and supply of marquees and gazebos to the events industry. Durst full digital glaze line Durst, a manufacturer of advanced digital printing and production technologies, has used the CEVISAMA 2018 Ceramic Tile and Machinery Exhibition in Valencia, Spain, to unveil more details on its full digital glaze line currently undergoing industrial field testing. After more than six years of research and development to create a complete glazing line capable of integrating a fully digital process based on an open system, Durst has confirmed that first customer installations are scheduled to start later this year. The solution incorporates latestgeneration Durst glazing, printing and finishing technologies that can work with glazes that are similar to conventional products. On its stand at CEVISAMA 2018, Durst unveiled the Durst TRUE Full Digital Tile Production Workflow 4.0. The workflow was highlighted alongside production systems on the stand. These were the Durst Gamma DG Digital Glaze Printer and Gamma XD Printer, as well as the Durst ColorGATE True Ceramics Color Management Solution. Durst’s single-pass glaze printer uses patented Durst RockJet® printhead technology, developed and manufactured by Durst specifically for the ceramic glaze properties. It is the only technology that can handle water-based glazes with large particle sizes up to 45 microns, which is similar than traditional glazes. The Gamma DG Digital Glaze printer features high resolution structures as used in the majority of the structured tiles produced, but has unlimited variations, as well as an ability to creative innovative and unique designs composed of different glazes on the same tile. These include gloss and matt finishes. Durst’s XD Series next-generation digital ceramic décor printer has been designed for easy and fast maintenance and service. It boasts unrivalled print quality with no banding or lines, low grain visibility, excellent uptime and reliability, low maintenance and service costs. Other benefits include long printhead duty cycles with no purge or ink waste and a dry beltcleaning system.
The ColorGATE True Ceramics Color Management is unique because it is the only solution with ultra-fast patch reading printed on flat or structured tile surfaces. It has fast colour matching for new and repeating jobs, specifically designed for ceramic inks and production conditions. Patented “Fingerprint” colour control takes into account any variation over time, for example glaze or firing conditions. Norbert von Aufschnaiter, Durst Group’s Segment Manager, Ceramics Division, said: “We had many more visitors to our stand at CEVISAMA 2018 than in previous years. Visitors were extremely interested in the latest developments in our Durst Digital Full Glaze Line latest-generation technology, which is on track. These are exciting times and we’re confident of starting installations later this year. “The resultant line will guarantee maximum versatility, flexibility and quality, as well as extremely competitive management costs, space rationalisation optimisation of production and a high degree of management control through process automation.” www.durst-group.com
Imprint Digital Horizon book production Imprint Digital has invested in an IFS-supplied Horizon HT1000V variable three knife trimmer and Horizon BQ470 four clamp perfect binder to support demand for fast turnaround, flexible and efficient book and journal production. The Exeter print production arm of publisher Imprint Academic specialises in soft and hardback publications in a range of subjects including philosophy, history, politics, psychology and consciousness studies. It also completes work for external and self-publishers. Adam Roppert, Production Director, explains the reason for the investment: “We had a Horizon HT30 three knife trimmer which we just ran and ran. We looked at both a like for like replacement and the HT1000V. “We chose the HT1000V because of the additional production capacity and its flexibility with different jobs. Day to day we are being asked to handle all the normal book sizes and everything in between. The new system can manage that workload easily. And it produces very nice books.” He continues: “It is very quick to set up so we can chop and change in 30 seconds rather
than the 10 to 15 minutes the older system was taking. There was also more maintenance on the older system and that time in now being spent on producing books.” The HT1000V was picked to future proof the business too: “We are not getting asked for a lot of book of one production at the moment but if that increases the HT1000V has the option to easily add variable software. This gives us a clear upgrade path if we would like it.” The BQ470 was a like for like replacement
and it will run in-line with the HT1000V: “We had an old Horizon system and it was time to upgrade. We were happy with the older system’s reliability and consistency and know the replacement would be exactly what we needed for the work we are doing. Its quick and easy set-up will also help us further streamline production.” The Horizon HT1000V variable three-knife trimmer produces high quality variable shortrun and book of one production at up to 1,000 books per hour. It can handle untrimmed and trimmed sizes, up to 65mm thick. It features a uniquely designed user-friendly interface that enables intuitive operation and fine-tune adjustment. 200 jobs can be memorised for repeat orders or special applications. The small-footprinted 1,350 books per hour Horizon BQ 470 four-clamp perfect binder is ideally suited to mid-range soft back book production with higher production speeds, instant make readies for runs of one. It can bind up to 65 mm thickness and offers fully automated set-up through an intuitive icon based LCD touchscreen. www.ifsl.uk.com

WPAPS: UK’s first Epson SureColor SC-F9300 Epson partner Colourbyte has delivered the UK’s first SureColor SC-F9300 dye sublimation textile printer to WPAPS, a personalised product fulfilment business that offers a print on demand fulfilment service of bespoke and branded products from phone and laptop cases through to ceramics, stationery and mugs. This latest printer in its portfolio will produce polyester-based products that include cushions, pillows and towels. WPAPS is a long term Epson customer which already runs a SureColor SC-F9200 model, seven Epson SureColor SC-P6000s and 20+ Epson Stylus 7890s. “Every day we are producing 400 to 1,000 products off the new SureColor SC-F9300 which is running 16 hours a day,” says WPAPS CEO Tom Withers. “Our core business is built around the personalised one-off product and we produce and distribute direct to the end user on behalf of a wide range of businesses worldwide. We like the chassis and drying system on the new dye sublimation model and, although it seems a mere detail, the light inside is really helpful in allowing us to check the print quality and the printhead.” The 108.6m2/hr SureColor SC-F 9300 was launched at the end of 2017 to provide fast, high-volume printing for clothing, textiles and soft signage, as well as other printed merchandise. New Epson Precision Dot technology for dye sublimation including a halftone module, look-up tables and micro-weave help make a noticeable difference to print quality even on the most complex designs. It can handle even the thinnest substrates without any fear of cockling and it is very straightforward to set up and run. “I love dye sub because it doesn’t print onto but into the fabric and you get really vibrant, high quality results that will last and are safety tested,” says Mr Withers. “We are just launching print on demand leggings and we will use this technology to produce work onto a lycra/polyester mix material.” WPAPS will combine a range of products, often one off bespoke items,
for any customer. The fulfilment process uses its bespoke API to automate the order, production and delivery. But the company has also launched myprintpartner.co.uk for end users who require a more manual order processing regime. Mr Withers could see this being used by, for instance, designers, corporate customers and brands that want to expand their product offering with no upfront costs. Mr Withers has a special relationship with 21 year old Colourbyte, relying on the opinion of its operations director Andreas Tangemann for advice on the best way to produce a new item. “He is exceptionally knowledgeable and so when he recommends equipment we take action. This purchase is already proving invaluable.” Colourbyte which sells large format printers, RIPs and a vast range of consumables is based in Hemel Hempstead where it has a fully operational demonstration suite and 13,000 sq ft warehouse facility. www.epson.co.uk

Nurse: “Doctor, doctor! The man you’ve just treated collapsed on the front step! What should I do?” Doctor: “Turn him around, so it looks like he was just arriving!”
Good Circulation
A teacher was giving a lesson on the circulation of blood. Trying to make the matter clearer, he said: “Now, students, if I stood on my head, the blood, as you know, would run into it, and I should turn red in the face.” “Yes,” the pupils said. “Then why is it that while I am standing upright the blood doesn’t run into my feet?” A little boy shouted, “It’s because your feet aren’t empty.”
The Paint Diet
Why did the diet coach send her new client to the paint shop? She knew you could get thinner there!
Bright Sun
Two idiots were standing looking at the sun. They were arguing. One said it was the sun while the other one said it was the moon. A copier salesmen happened to walk by. They asked him, “What is that in the sky?” The salesman simply replied, “Sorry, I can’t help you. I’m not from this area.”
Thanks for the memory
An elderly couple had dinner at another couple’s house, and after eating, the wives left the table and went into the kitchen. The two gentlemen were talking, and one said, “Last night we went out to a new restaurant and it was really great I would recommend it very highly. The other man said, “What is the name of the restaurant?” The first man thought and thought and finally said, “What is the name of that flower you give to someone you love? You know... the one that’s red and has thorns.” “Do you mean a rose?” “Yes, that’s the one,” replied the

Drop pill down ruler and rub cat’s throat vigorously. 7. Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from foil wrap. Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered ornaments from hearth and set to one side for gluing later. 8. Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force mouth open with pencil and blow down drinking straw. 9. Check the label to make sure pill not harmful to humans, drink beer to take taste away. Apply band-aid to spouse’s forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap. 10. Retrieve cat from neighbour’s shed. Drink another beer then get another pill. Did you hear the rumour? — Kid Jokes Did you hear the rumour about butter? Never mind, I better not spread it.
Back in the day
A man asked his wife what she’d like for her birthday. “I’d like to be eight again...” she replied. On the morning of her birthday, he arose early, made her a nice big bowl of Coco Pops, and then took her off to the local theme park. What a day! He put her on every ride in the park: the Death Slide, the Wall of Fear, the Screaming Monster Roller Coaster, every thing there was. Five hours later she staggered out of the theme park. Her head was reeling and her stomach felt upside down. Right away, they journeyed to a McDonald’s where her loving husband ordered her a Happy Meal with extra fries and a refreshing chocolate shake. Then it was off to the movies with popcorn, all the Coke she could drink, and her favourite M and M’s. What a fabulous adventure! Finally she wobbled home with her husband and collapsed into bed exhausted. He leaned over his precious wife with a big smile and lovingly asked, “Well, Dear, what was it like being eight again?” Her eyes slowly opened and her expression suddenly changed. “I meant my dress size!” The moral of the story: Even when a man is listening, he’s going to get it wrong.

Tale of two cities
Three men were at a bar discussing coincidences. The first man said, “My wife was reading a ‘Tale of Two Cities’ and she gave birth to twins!” “That’s funny,” the second man remarked, “my wife was reading ‘The Three Musketeers’ and she gave birth to triplets!” The third man shouted, “Good God, I have to rush home!” When asked what the problem was, he exclaimed, “When I left the house, my wife was reading Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves!”
Last, but not least
“3D printers are now printing guns.” said one man to another. The other replied, “That’s nothing. I’ve had a Canon printer for years.” Why is ‘dark’ spelled with a k and not c? Because you can’t see in the dark. My daughter asked me what “inexplicable” means. I said, “It’s hard to explain.” How many mystery writers does it take to screw in a light bulb? Two. One to screw it in most of the way, and the other to give it a surprise twist at the end.
