Well, the overwhelming response is that we don’t! As major print industry players your opinion was sought ... what’s in a name? To better describe the part of the print industry we all work in we have dropped the process and gone for the service we provide our eight million end-users. The printing process has proved to not be important to the end-user, you have told us that customers do not care whether you use ink, toner, wax, laser, nano, mims, analogue or digital? So who are we and what are we doing? We need to differentiate from the off street, no reception, big litho run print firms, unless of course they have a friendly interface with Joe Public digital division, then they can join in on the frontline in our new formation. The acronym QPP has been chosen to best represent us when as a group we publish standards including CSR and business recovery processes. More on this next month, suffice to say our members have much more than a new titled trade magazine as QPP will be recognised for quality and certified to tender for print business on all levels. Welcome to the new print era and join us under our QPP banner and take up your place as a Quick Print Pro. I guess after 15 years we all needed a name change. Have a great May. Morgana Director on his bike for cancer victim

Andrew Webster, co-founder and director of Morgana Systems has announced details of a charity bike ride that he will be undertaking in July of this year. “I have volunteered to do a 300 mile bike ride from London to Paris over just four days,” confirmed Andrew. “We leave London on July 11 and return on July 15.” Andrew’s charity ride is aiming to raise money for Willen Hospice where former Morgana employee Frank Lewis recently spent his last days. “Frank was a well liked and respected employee who joined the company back in 2001. He was one of our installation team. Frank always had a smile on his face – something for which he will always be remembered,” said Andrew. Frank lost his battle with cancer on February 13, 2012, and will be sadly missed by his family, friends and colleagues. “I want to raise as much as I can for Willen Hospice, Milton Keynes, but need to have sponsorship of at least £1,400 before the event begins or I won’t be allowed to take part in the ride. I therefore need to ask all friends and associates in the print industry, and the Milton Keynes area, to donate what you can to this excellent cause,” added Andrew. With regard to his physical shape for the ride, Andrew does confirm that he has never ridden anywhere near this far, but is hoping to get into trim over the coming three months to ensure that

AndrewWebster Sponsors are registering now at the above address. Bob Usher, a long standing friend of Andrew, and MD of Apex Digital Graphics, has sponsored and already started the banter on the comments board too: “Don’t ask me to apply the cream on your return, good luck and a great cause.” The print industry will also be encouraged to sponsor Andrew during the forthcoming drupa exhibition, taking place in Germany from May 3 to 16, where Morgana Systems can be found in hall 8B, stand A65.

he can complete the course! The sponsorship for the event is being managed by Virgin Money Giving – a not for profit organisation that will claim gift aid on a charity’s behalf where the donor is eligible. Do more with the TA mountain poster team

and the electrics for the hoped for illumination. The intrepid TA team¹s first attempt was confounded by the weather when a storm made the first peak unsafe for climbers, let alone poster installers. But the second worked, even though weather conditions were still uncomfortably blustery. And, to cap it all, the poster was successfully turned on, with the TA¹s bold slogan “Do More. Be More.” blazing away over the foggy peaks of the Brecon

As part of its “Do more. Be More.” Awareness -raising poster campaign the The Territorial Army (TA) and out of home advertising company Clear Channel approached poster printer and visual display specialist Prismaflex UK to see if it was possible to install an illuminated poster on one of the peaks of the Brecon Beacons mountain range in Wales. The Brecon Beacons is where the part time soldiers, who have served recently in the British Army in Afghanistan and Iraq, conduct many of their training exercises. Primasflex both prints large scale posters and produces the installations for them at its factory in Newhaven, Sussex. For the mountain posting it chose the biggest standard format available, a 96-sheet made of mesh. “This was clearly a big test for the TA but also for us,” says managing director Tom Weaver. “We knew our posters worked on the high street but we¹d never tried to put one up on a windswept mountain before.” The installation required the transportation of three and a half tonnes of kit up the mountain, Corn Du, including the poster itself, the frame

Beacons. Colonel Stephen Potter, head of TA recruiting, said: “The TA is growing and we want to get the message out that we are recruiting. By joining the TA you can achieve so much more, both in your work and social life and I’m impressed by the team in achieving a really challenging task” Prismaflex MD Tom says: “I was amazed at the skill and commitment shown by the TA team. Their motto really is ‘nothing is impossible.’ I was pleased and relieved that we didn’t let them down.” Derek Manns, Head of Create, Clear Channel said: “Clear Channel worked with the TA to provide a special prototype poster designed to withstand extreme weather conditions, demonstrating the TA’s tireless ability to rise to any challenge. Erecting the poster in the severe weather was a monumental achievement and will undoubtedly raise awareness for its recruitment campaign. We were delighted to work on such an inspirational campaign.” Find out more from Sam Cook and Sarah Wicks at Prismaflex UK on 0207 849 4513.

OKI Challenge in aid of Help for Heroes

OKI is supporting the 2012 Volvo National Golf Club Challenge and assisting clubs in promoting the cause to its members. There is no fee to enter the challenge, but clubs need to organise a fundraising competition in aid of the charity during June 2012. The top golfing teams and a team from the club raising the most money win a place in a final to be played on the famous Turnberry course in October. OKI is supporting these events by supplying participating clubs with the printed materials needed to promote and run their golf day. These will include posters, tent cards and commemorative golf ball boxes which are all part of the OKI creative media portfolio. Andrew Hall, marketing manager, OKI Systems UK says “we are confident the British golfing public will rise to this challenge. Help for Heroes is such a worthwhile cause and as everybody participating in last year’s contest will testify fundraising for it can be great fun too. OKI is proud to be supporting the contest.” Each club entering the competition must send their top ten mens and/ or top five ladies Stableford scores to the organisers. These will then become the club’s two official aggregate scores to be counted against standard scratch and par. The top ten men players from the three best clubs and the top five women players will be invited to the final. Both of the champion teams will win golfing holidays in St Lucia. Proskills Aligns to New Business Model Proskills has just completed a restructure of the organisation following a board meeting on 21st March 2012. A leaner Proskills will have a new business plan and has chosen to cease to be a Sector Skills Council by 30 June 2012, but rather will continue as the Standards Setting Organisation and National Skills Academy for eight industries in the Process and Manufacturing Sector. Tom Bowtell, interim Chief Executive Officer at Proskills said “Proskills going forward will focus on a narrower remit to develop and uphold standards, qualifications and apprenticeships, drive demand for training and qualifications via the National Skills Academy provider network, help employers access funding and promote the industries to young people across the UK. The board felt that there were still significant synergies realised through working together through their own skills body, rather than joining forces with another sector where their voices would be diluted or unheard.” Although it will no longer carry the responsibility of being a Sector Skills Council, the new structure and plan, as approved by the board, is placing Proskills in a strong position to continue forward and support the needs of the sector, led by a knowledgeable and motivated team. The investment environment created by Government, especially through the Employer Investment Fund, Growth and Innovation Fund and now through the Employer Ownership Pilots, will present greater opportunities for Proskills to work collaboratively to ensure more support to the manufacturing sector. Proskills will continue to bid for funding for development of standards and framework related products through a collaborative approach with SSC led clusters, for which Proskills are already a successful part of. Terry Watts will be leaving Proskills at the end of March and Tom Bowtell in May. Ian Aspley, Chair of Proskills Building Products Industry Board and former Operations Director at Marley Eternit; will be appointed as interim General Manager to take over from Bowtell during May. Ian said “Our companies need skilled people, it is clear that the government’s strategy is that employers must take more ownership of the skills agenda. So now more than ever it is up to us to support our Standards Setting body and National Skills Academy, to ensure that we have the necessary skills to move our sector forward and I ask all of those who believe in a profitable and successful future to join us to make it a reality.” Proskills will continue to support and run PrintIT! the leading schools into industry programme, however, more support is needed from the industry to ensure its continued success. Proskills will be working very closely with the key trade associations to ensure the needs of the industry are met and Richard Moore will continue as the industry Lead for print and paper industries. The latest information about developments can be found at www.printskillsacademy.co.uk

Roland DG Introduce White Ink Vivid to unveil feeder Configuration units for Matrix R

oland DG (UK) Ltd has announced that the VersaSTUDIO BN-20 and VersaCAMM VS Series eco-solvent metallic inkjet printer/cutters, now offer a specialised new ink configuration for white colour printing applications. This new configuration is available in 5 colours for the BN-20 – cyan, magenta, yellow, black and white; and 7 colours for the VS Series – cyan, magenta, yellow, black, light cyan light magenta and double white. Users can choose the ink configuration that best suits their business needs at the time of purchasing. “White colour printing is currently available for screen and gravure printing,” said Brett Newman, Roland DG UK’s technical director. “However, the high costs involved in plate making with these traditional methods means that small volume printing becomes unprofitable. In addition, these traditional methods can take a number of days to deliver a few pieces of print. With the new white colour configuration, Roland’s BN-20 and VS Series are an ideal solution for small printing businesses, design offices and medium sized screen printers to increase productivity, add value to their offering and cover a wider variety of their customers needs.” In today’s market, the life cycle of a product is getting shorter, and as a result visual communication tools are becoming more significant to enhance retail promotions and drive sales. With innovative solutions such as the new white ink configuration, Roland DG aims to provide printing businesses with the tools to meet the growing demand from brand owners, retail outlets and design houses for small volume and specialised printing. VersaSTUDIO BN-20 – Compact and Low Running Cost The BN-20 is a 20” wide compact Eco- Solvent inkjet printer/cutter. It enables you to easily produce small volume graphics, labels, apparel, window graphics and signage on a wide variety of media including transparent film right from your desktop. The BN-20 can save you time and production costs with the unique Roland Print and Cut workflow that prints and precision contour cuts graphics of virtually any shape. VersaCAMM VS Series – High Opacity, High Speed and Quick Dry The VS Series EcoSolvent inkjet printer/cutters are available in 4 different widths: 30”, 42”, 54” and 64”. Using transparent film and the new high opacity white ink configuration, the VS Series can produce a wide variety of high quality applications such as window displays, labels, decals or small production packaging prototypes. The new white ink configuration increases speed by 200% for standard white colour printing compared to the previous Roland configurations for even higher productivity. The combination of a dedicated dryer and blower fitted on the VS Series device vastly increases productivity, and assures efficient drying of the white ink even in high opacity mode. TIFF Merge Function Assures High Quality Printing of Process-Colour and White Colour` For precision printing, “TIFF Merge” function has been added to both the VersaSTUDIO BN-20 and the VS Series. The TIFF Merge function sends and prints a process colour data file and a white colour data file at the same time, preventing any gap between the two files, which can occur when the two files are sent to the printer and printed separately. www.rolanddg.com

Vivid Laminating Technologies will be using next month’s drupa show to launch two prototype Auto Feeders for their popular Matrix MX-370, MX-530 & MX-700 single sided laminating machines. The Auto Feeders can be purchased as an optional extra with all three machines, but more importantly, can also be retro-fitted to the 370, 530 or 700 already in use. Vivid’s Product Manager Bruce Cozens explains “The idea for the Auto Feeders really came about by listening to our customers. Time and time again, the one thing that people kept asking us was ‘Can I buy an auto feeder for my Matrix?’”. Vivid designed the feeders with their current customer base in mind. Bruce continues “It was important to design a system that our customers could buy as an add on unit. We’ve created the feeders for our customers to simply attach to their current machines”. Vivid state that the Matrix systems are the best value single sided laminators on the market, they are simple to use and are incredibly cost-effective, requiring no outsourcing to print finishers. “We’re so pleased that we can now offer an Auto Feeder to our Matrix users” says Bruce “No longer will you have to manually hand feed each print into the machine to be laminated. You could literally start the job and then begin a new job on another machine”. Vivid will be exhibiting the Auto Feeders, along with their entire range of laminating and finishing products at drupa. You can also register your interest in the Auto Feeder by calling 01530 510946, email: sales@vivid-online.com or liking their Facebook page at facebook.com/ vividlaminating.

Delphax to showcase elan500 at drupa

With elan we are introducing a product line that has the potential not only to penetrate important segments of the market but to reshape them,” said Dieter Schilling, president and chief executive officer of Delphax. “We believe that elan’s combination of price, sheet-fed configuration and performance will make versatile high quality colour printing affordable—and profitable—for a much wider range of commercial printers than is the case today.” Powered by Memjet technologies, elan 500 is a robust production class sheet fed print system offering full colour and 1600 dpi print quality at speeds of up to 500 impressions per minute. Delphax engineers have integrated multiple Memjet printheads with a unique Delphax designed paper path utilising the company’s patented SST transport technology to create an unprecedented combination of speed, versatility, affordability and high quality for colour sheet-fed and ondemand inkjet production. “The system’s capabilities have been shaped by our market research, including extensive customer input, on the production and competitive pressures faced by commercial printers today,” Schilling said. “The result is innovation that not only sets a new speed benchmark for inkjet technology in a sheet fed configuration, but will also allow Delphax to market these systems at substantially lower prices than the competition.” The elan digital front end (DFE) uses the Adobe PDF document format for both publishing and variable workflow, driven by Delphax’s unique scalable

RIP architecture. The elan DFE allows simple and cost effective integration into any workflow solution without binding the customer to proprietary systems or requiring separate software solutions for each application type. An intuitive touch screen interface simplifies the operator experience, keeping input options clear and uncomplicated. Comprehensive reporting systems provide detailed metrics and permit real-time analysis of system performance. Maximum sheet size is 18 x 25.2 inches (SRA2 - 450 x 640 mm); minimum sheet size – 8 x 8 inches (203.2 x 203.2 mm). The system prints on a wide range of substrates, from 60 to 350 gsm. Patent pending in-line primer capability is an option for enhancing substrate compatibility. The system also offers up to two spot colours. Industry certified Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) is offered for security and direct mail printing and other personalised applications. elan is Delphax’s response to a growing customer demand for more efficient, versatile and affordable colour printing equipment, and it promises to be ideal for commercial print-on-demand challenges in direct mail, transpromotional, billing, statements and book or manual publishing. Its variable data and MICR capability are also expected to make elan attractive to Delphax’s established security printing market. Additional information is available on the company’s website at www.delphax.com

EFI Launches Fiery Dashboard Cloud Based Service With the 13th annual Connect users’ conference underway, EFI has launched Fiery Dashboard, a cloud based service that enables production managers to easily and quickly analyse their operations and make better business decisions. Fiery Dashboard provides 24/7 access to real time production data from any Internet browser, including mobile phones and tablets. “From printer uptime and utilisation to media use and paper jams, as well as a host of other metrics, now print shop owners can take better control of their operation with our cloud based Fiery Dashboard service,” said John Henze, vice president of Fiery marketing at EFI. “Users don’t have to be in their shop to stay on top of their operations, and don’t need to stop the presses to get the information necessary to make the right, data driven business decisions.” With Fiery Dashboard, you can collect a vast amount of production level data to monitor and measure what is most important to you. The dashboard view can be customised to focus on specific printers or groups of printers, define targets for engine utilisation, or choose different date ranges to measure daily, weekly, quarterly or even annual growth. Managers can easily see engine utilisation and status, jobs and pages printed by media and the split between colour and black and white. There are also a range of metrics that identify the source of production inefficiencies, from job errors and cancellations to paper jams. Fiery Dashboard also presents system status such as when engines need calibration to ensure colour consistency in addition to identifying current level of software updates.

You can compare these metrics between any or all Fiery Driven printers in the shop to understand relative engine productivity to more efficiently leverage resources across the shop. For instance, an owner may want to track black and white pages printed on a colour device to help determine if it makes more sense to purchase a dedicated black and white printer. Another example enables managers to compare printer utilisation to help balance workload and optimise time shifts and schedules. For more information about EFI, visit www.efi.com

Fujifilm XMF PrintCentre web-to-print solution V3 Fujifilm has announced the launch of the latest version of its cloud based web-to-print solution, XMF PrintCentre V3. XMF PrintCentre is a hosted web-to-print system that allows print companies to create multiple e-commerce web sites for selling print, and manages the whole print buying process from online purchasing through to delivering print ready PDF files into a print production system such as Fujifilm’s XMF Workflow. Many new capabilities have been included in version 3, including a new text editor module for managing variable text within the existing WYSIWYG template editor, enhanced PDF pre-flight control for ad hoc print jobs, and a new, larger preview of jobs being ordered. In addition, the system now includes many features designed for printers who specialise in wide format printing. “XMF PrintCentre V3 contains enhancements that make the processes of buying print for the web store, and managing the products that are sold on the web store, quicker and easier. We have also introduced different elements to the system to suit the requirements of wide format printers, reflecting the need for the customised sizing of specific printed items and for flexibility in how these types of printed products are priced.” comments John Davies, business strategy manager for FUJFILM Europe. “Ensuring printers can easily add any new printed product to their web store is one of the critical factors of a successful web-to-print system, as printers need to take advantage of sales opportunities as quickly as possible,“ he concludes. www.fujifilm.co.uk/gs

16 | DRUPA | QUICK PRINT PRO | May 2012

All aboard, we’re off to drupa

Get set for a stepping stone tour between the print and online world at drupa 2012. Where print meets digital, visions become true and exciting print products become possible…

P

ackaging lights up, posters transport you into virtual worlds, mailing campaigns become measurable and giveaways playfully ensure a sustainable advertising effect. Print products are coming to life thanks to interfaces such as QR codes, augmented reality or touch codes. Visitors of the drupa cube 2012 on the “Day of Packaging” (04 May), on the “Day of Dialogue Marketing” (10 May) and on the “Day of Out of Home” (14 May) will find out what is already being used successfully today and what will be possible tomorrow. The black and white squares can currently be found almost everywhere: On business cards, posters, packaging - even on roofs, cufflinks, gravestones or condom packets. QR codes point smartphone users in a simple and direct way to the Internet. Even if the interface between print products and the digital world yields strange results every now and again, its advantages are evident: The black and white matrix can be produced quickly and cost effectively and can be read with all QR readers. Customers and those interested can quickly and easily be piloted to campaigns, information, services and mobile shopping. According to an eBay study from December last year, 48% of the participants would order online straight away, if a QR code referred them to an interesting product. “Today, mobile Internet is always at hand due to smartphones increasingly being distributed. Advertisers who do not offer interfaces between classic and digital media, such as QR codes or augmented reality, are being rather foolish as they miss out on chances for new market experiences or direct dialogue with their customers”, says Florian Gmeinwieser, Head of Mobile at the Plan. Net Group in Munich, Germany. He will provide a lecture on the topic “going beyond labels with

augmented reality” in the drupa cube on the “Day of Out of Home”. From web-to-print to print-to-web Augmented reality, or AR for short, offers many chances to equip print products with added value such as with Karl Knauer KG’s give-away which won the Promotional Gift Award 2012 in the category of “Communicative Products” not long ago. The note cube printed with a marker leads to an AR game via a smartphone app and camera. New technologies for more growth Even Mike Ferrari sees new technologies as the future. For over three decades, he was responsible for the division of Global Packaging at The Procter & Gamble Co. and has designed and organised the “Day of Packaging” in the drupa cube, for which he will hold the opening speech. “Companies must create unique features and stimuli for consumers in order to stand out from the crowd with their products”, says the founder and president of Ferrari Innovations Solutions, LLC. drupa 2012: For the first time, online ticket shop with eTickets: Print@home and travel to the trade fair free of charge Travel offers to destination and accommodation offers The tickets for drupa 2012 (03 to 16 May 2012) are available online atwww.drupa.com For the first time, the tickets are offered as eTickets – this means double the benefits for the visitor: Saving time and money. Visitors can purchase their ticket online, print it out on their own printer and travel to the trade fair by bus and train free of charge.

Furthermore, the eTicket is clearly less expensive than the ticket purchased on location. The oneday ticket costs 40 euros online, at the cash desks in Düsseldorf the price is 65 euros. The four-day ticket costs 129 euros on the Internet compared to 220 euros when purchased on location. And also the reduced admission fee for students and trainees is cheaper via Internet: 15 euros instead of 25 euros. The opening hours of drupa are from 10.00 am to 6.00 pm daily (at weekends until 5.00 pm). All drupa tickets include free round trip transportation with busses, subway and trains to the trade fair on the Regional Transport Networks Rhine-Ruhr (VRR) and Rhine-Sieg (VRS) (2nd class, supplementfree trains only). More information about the rail network at www.vrr.de and www.vrs-info.de. In addition there is an attractive offer, which Messe Düsseldorf, in collaboration with the Deutsche Bahn (German Railway) and Düsseldorf Marketing & Tourismus (DMT), has agreed upon. Trade fair visitors can travel from all German cities to Düsseldorf and back at a reasonable price: For example, for 109 euros you can purchase a round trip railway ticket from Hamburg (Savings: more than 30 euros). If you are still looking for accommodation in Düsseldorf or in the region, you will surely find something at DMT. The following website will let you find numerous hotel offers in a wide variety of categories or accommodations in private homes: http://business.duesseldorf-tourismus.de/en/ fair/drupa/

he free educational programme, both on-stand and show organised, was well received with sessions covering a huge range of topics including vehicle wrapping, dye-sub printing, routing, software and colour management. The Adobe Theatre and Corel Theatre showcased their latest software packages and both were as popular as ever with each session extremely well attended. The Sign makers’ Workshop delivered “back to basics” training sessions which attracted a huge crowd to each session and also helped to draw a number of budding sign makers and quick print businesses to the show. New for 2012 was the Green Trail which proved popular with visitors looking to source eco-friendly products. Café 25 was busy throughout the three days with visitors and exhibitors going along to see vintage machinery and look at photos of their colleagues from the past 25 years. Visitors reported a successful show with many coming to source and purchase new equipment. Visitor Vince Murphy, Managing Director of Bullseye Limited comments, “We come to Sign & Digital UK to look at the equipment. We have been comparing two machines at the show, we needed to do a straight comparison and having the two machines in one place allows us to do that. We now need to make a decision.” Sign & Digital UK 2012 overall attendance, subject to ABC audit, was 6,264 with visitors from a wide range of companies. The feedback from exhibitors has also been extremely positive. Next years’ Sign & Digital UK will be held at Birmingham NEC Halls 3 & 3A on 30th April – 2nd May. the new double white ink configuration option now available with the VersaCAMM VS and the VersaSTUDIO BN-20 printer/cutters proved incredibly popular. Said Brett Newman, Technical Director, Roland DG (UK): “It was fantastic that the opportunity just to meet with us and other users drew so many visitors to the stand. We’re proud to be so close to our users and the show was a valuable opportunity to connect with them and develop a mutual understanding of the direction they want to go and the solutions they need to succeed. “Some visitors were understandably cautious about the immediate future but the prevailing attitude really was positive. Many arrived keen to explore new technology that could help them to expand and improve revenue streams and, in that respect, the BN-20, the flexible and reliable VersaCAMM VS series and the desktop VersaUV LEF-12 inspired visitors with the sheer range of possible applications.” Proud Roland customers Jayson Godridge, Freestyle Designs and Fraser Moore, Compass Graphics (both VersaCAMM users); and Pete Colman, Classic Lines Plus Signs (VersaCAMM VS-640 metallic, SolJet SC545 white, EGX-350 and Metaza MPX-80) were all on the stand sharing their Roland experiences with visitors. And RolandCare also had its own dedicated space, with a number of people signing up to Extended RolandCare warranties over the three days, and receiving the gift of a new Nikon digital camera at the same time. This offer remains open until camera stocks last and any new Roland customers in need of an Extended warranty, direct from the manufacturer should visit www. rolandcare.co.uk to find out more. In total there were nine authorised Roland

dealers at Sign & Digital UK 2012. With nearly the entire Roland portfolio of products represented: SolJet, VersaUV LEJ-640 and LEC-540, VersaCAMM SP’s and VS’s, VersaArt RS-640, VersaStudio BN-20 and Roland EGX engravers line at the show there was something for everyone, whether printed signage or engraved products. The streamlined workflow of the integrated print and cut set-up proved as popular as ever and the VersaCAMM VS-640 machine is continuing the tradition of being productive, easy to use and affordable. The latest generation features a gold print head for the highest print quality and highest speed of any VersaCAMM. Owners can choose from a variety of ink configurations for greater flexibility: 4-colour for high speed, 6-colour for high quality and metallic for high value. Roland has also recently announced a new double white ink configuration and there is still time to take advantage of Roland’s VersaCAMM VS special offer. Every VersaCAMM VS-640 purchased before the end of April will come with a two year Silver RolandCare warranty, a 12 month full-membership subscription to isignstock.com and a take-up unit, essential for unattended printing. The VersaSTUDIO BN-20 is a 20” wide desktop

sized complete production studio for display graphics, stickers promotional goods and garments and, with a low price point but high performance, it is fast becoming one of Roland’s best-sellers. Now available with a white ink option and now prints at almost double the speed saw the BN-20 affirm its position as the latest Roland best-seller. This clever solution, which combines high quality, vivid and durable print with integrated precision cutting, comes bundled with all the necessary software to bring new levels of versatility to a signmaking business. Its ability to print metallic ink quickly and easily also gives graphics and promotional items added “wow” factor, with integrated contour cutting simplifying nested and step-and-repeat designs. Finally, the VersaUV LEF-12 printer places lucrative customisation and personalisation opportunities within reach of businesses of all sizes. As straightforward to use as an ordinary desktop printer, it is an extraordinary machine that enables printing of logos, images and text directly to a huge range of materials and objects up to 100mm deep, including wood, card, papers, films, glass, polyesters, metal, leather and plastics. Users can add value to a vast array of popular consumer items including mobile phone cases, USB sticks, pens, diaries and notepads. Using Roland’s Eco UV-curable ink, the CMYK palette of the LEF-12 is complemented by LED curing, white ink and clear varnish. This latter feature not only enables special textures and effects, but is also ideal for threedimensional textures, gloss or matte embossing including Braille. Missed the show? Visit www.rolanddg.co.uk or call 0845 230 90 60 to arrange a personal demonstration on any Roland machine at a showroom near you.

Mimaki launch latex, dye sub and UV Hybrid Services Ltd – Mimaki’s exclusive UK & Irish distributor, enjoyed an excellent Sign & Digital exhibition with multiple product launches, special guests and plenty of anticipation around a substantial array of new Mimaki solutions on their stand at the entrance to the halls. With the launch of the Mimaki JV400 latex printer range making the headlines at the show – and featuring on a number of Hybrid’s resellers’ stands – it was unsurprising that the new machine caught the attention of so many visitors to the exhibition. John de la Roche is Hybrid’s national sales manager and he was in buoyant mood as the show drew to a close. “Our resellers have taken multiple orders for the new machines, so we’re delighted with the response to the product launches we made during the show. The new Mimaki latex printers have understandably captivated the commercial print, sign making and graphics sectors – it’s a solution that offers companies considerable revenue generating potential.” Mimaki’s latest addition to its dye sublimation range is the Mimaki TS34-1800A – and alongside a new variant of Mimaki’s incredibly successful LED UV flatbed was launched during the show as well. Hybrid’s marketing manager, Duncan Jefferies, remarked, “Launching new products with three completely different ink types serves to demonstrate Mimaki’s continued commitment to innovation, within multiple markets and delivering a highly creative suite of solutions.”

Amongst all the excitement around the new product launches, Laura Hutchings of Silk Screen Advertising won the Spot the Ball competition – taking home a signed football jersey from legends Arthur Albiston and Lou Macari who helped Hybrid celebrate the exhibition’s 25th anniversary. Hybrid and its reseller network anticipate a busy period installing machines and working closely with their customers over the next few months, but for those who couldn’t make it to the show; open days and product demonstrations are available on request. Bet you can’t wait for Windows 8? Just when you thought you’d got ahead of your IT affairs Microsoft’s latest evolution is on the horizon. Martin Christie writes…

D

ue for release in October this year, by the end of the summer you’ll probably be seeing the pre-launch advertising and PR campaign. I’m sure it’s only a week or so since we stopped seeing the last of “I am a PC, I am Windows 7 and this was all my idea”. That was supposed to replace sliced bread as the best new concept so I wonder what the media gurus will conjure up as a strap link for this latest creation. As far as I can see Windows 8 has a lot more to do with making the operating system easier to work with iPads, iPhone, games devices and all of the other potential gadgets that people will eventually start communicating from rather than laptops and main frame desktops, sales of which are in decline. The full sized keyboard looks likely to become an endangered species, to be replaced by the touch screen. How this progress will affect us is hard to estimate at this stage, but the mobile technology has certainly put electronic information and imagery exchange in the hands of a lot more potential customers than the standard computer boxes we have become used to. Applications designed to make simple tasks like image editing and document composing instant and user friendly, replace the need to go into complex photo editing programmes or design software. But convenience can also mean speed at the cost of accuracy. Of course, as we know, preparing attractive presentations for social or business networking sites is one thing. Producing something that is fit and ready for print is quite another. We have already experienced customers trying to proof read and edit multipage documents on the view screen of a mobile phone ! There are two ways to view this technological progress. One is to see the opener poised atop yet another can of worms. The other is to be more positive and see it as an opportunity to take advantage of. I shall try and take the latter line, with a little bit of natural scepticism for the former. The reality is that as technology empowers the unskilled to perform tasks

that previously required an experienced operator, the information gap widens between the two. And because of the pace of change this is happening very fast and will continue relentlessly. It has taken a couple of generations of car drivers to produce one that has very little understanding of what actually goes on between the turning of the key on departure, and the locking of the door on arrival. The whole machine is a mechanical mystery now, and when it comes to a stop or fails to respond in the expected manner, the operator has little or no idea of the cause, nor any warning from knowing tell-tale signs of imminent failure that would be picked up by a more experienced driver. IT is not so very different if you think about it. How often do you have a customer at the counter say that something is “strange” because something went wrong – it didn’t open properly,or it reflowed, or just didn’t do anything at all. To any of us with more than a few months regular experience, it’s not strange at all, quite the reverse. As a disarmingly honest Hp boffin said to me a few years ago, “When you understand all that’s involved, it’s amazing anything comes out at all!” I am not an IT wizard nor fluent in binary language. As a photographer, I am a more of a mechanic, understanding the physical relationship, between light and darkness, as well as lots of shades of grey in between. It always seems to me that people who immerse themselves in the IT world see mostly the extremes of black and white and not much room for doubt and uncertainty in the middle ground. Probably for that reason, when a call comes for an IT consultant, it is most often passed to me as the old grey head least likely to be impressed by a sales pitch. Been there, seen it, tried it. I only grudgingly began to phase out the physical work of the darkroom and accept my first computer as a necessary evil as digital imaging looked like being more than a flash in the pan. It was running Windows 95 if I remember, which was then considered the standard issue. To put it in perspective, it needed a mere 64Mb of ram to operate. It was replaced by Windows 98 in the appropriate year that needed a massive 128Mb! A lot of people in the industry hung on to Windows 98 some way into the 21st century, and long past its supposed sell by date because it was a proven system – the bugs ironed out, the little quirks accepted. The next creations from Microsoft, Windows 2000, and the Millenium edit all had issues. It wasn’t until the introduction of a complete rethink in the form of XP that a new standard appeared, and even XP had a number of well known problems with some of its service pack upgrades. Once the issues were sorted, and the operating system stabilised, it became a trusted factor in the studio, so much so that not only most PCs in the working environment still rely on the XP engine, but also most intelligent printers use an XP working platform beneath their user interface. A little concerning then to read that behind the trumpeting of the impending launch of Eight, Microsoft intend to cease support for XP systems by 2014. This doesn’t mean that they will just stop working, but there will be

no upgrades, patches or development work, so what will happen with any conflicts arising from that and more up to date operating systems remains a big question. One that I’d personally prefer to know a few more answers to before it hits me in the face. None of the software manufacturers has what you would consider an unblemished record on product reliability. Not always their own fault, to be fair. The problem is there are so many people working on so many different things that all need to work together seamlessly when they are put into action, it is almost invevitable that something will cause a hiccup. Windows Vista, which supposedly replaced XP, was widely regarded as a failure and hastily replaced by Windows 7, and any issues quickly brushed under the carpet in Seattle. It worked ok on its own, but it was its compatability with various other software and hardware that seemed to be the problem – something that XP’s long shelf life had ironed out. Adobe’s Photoshop CS4 was another programme under a bit of a cloud, coincidentally introduced around the same time, and rapidly upgraded to number five. This month CS6 is out of the blocks and next month we’ll have a look at the flagship photo editing suite to see if all the updates are really worth the price tag. If you have been running CS5 and took advantage of the free upgrade to CS6 before the beginning of May, we’d be interested in any feedback so far. If, like a lot of us in the trade, you are still running good old reliable, well proven CS2, you may want to know if it is worth making the jump up or how long you can hang on before being forced to update. There are two sides to the debate. If customers are using more simple software to create files, then there may be more need of up to date professional tools at the studio. Alternatively they may be increasingly redundant to all but the specialist. We’ll have a good look into the can with the wriggling things in next month. On a lighter note, one of my favourite news stories of the month was that High street photographic chain Jessops managed to play April fool to more than a hundred thousand of their customers via a mailshot that landed on the first presenting some unusual but obviosuly potentially credible products These included a revolutionary Scent Cam, that let you smell the flowers in your pictures, and a Diva Cam compact camera that turned any portrait into a stunning work of art. Apart from the pleasant surprise that Jessops – despite the obvious dictate of the bean counters – still employs a few beings with a sense of humour, the amazing thing to me was that it fooled so few. A good many of my customers seem to think I have a fabulous piece of software that transforms their rubbish images into fantastic prints at the push of a button. They were taken with a very good camera after all. I have a horrible feeling that in the brave new world of phone apps, we might just need to source that item ! I do hope Adobe are working on it...

v i v i d.

And talking of the cutting edge of technology, a parcel arrived from Pantone which initially completely baffled me when I opened it, and took me a while to get my head around. This piece of wizardry is so sophisticated it can accurately calculate the quality of available light, and directly compare the nature of different refracted colour sources. It requires no specialist knowledge, needs no batteries, nor operating system. Once I worked it out, I had a grin from ear to ear. It’s just a set of stickers with link sensitive ink that changes when viewed under different light sources. If you’ve ever sent a customer out of the shop to look at a printed item in daylight rather than the artificial sources indoors then you will know exactly what this does. As the light changes, so does the colour on one side of the sticker. Under perfect (5000K) daylight equivalent, there is no difference – all seems one consistent colour. As you move away from an ideal source, the contrast increases, and the greater the contrast, the worse the quality of light under which it is being viewed. I now carry a couple of these stickers around with me at all times to bore friends with something I have been banging my head on the front counter to explain for years. But apart from a good party trick the main idea is that you can attach it to artwork proofs for important clients to take away to be sure they are getting an accurate assessment of colours. The Pantone Lighting Indicator pack comes with 40 self adhesive stickers. Not cheap, but when weighed against the the costs of producing colour sensitive proofs, and needlessly rejected prints, it starts to make sense. The only problem is that this simple but foolproof technical aid is no use at all if your customer is trying to proof his artwork on a Blackberry!

Green issues hot on the agenda at Sign & Digital

S

ign & Digital UK 2012 had a Green Trail for the very first time. The Green Trail featured all stands that exhibited a product considered environmentally or eco friendly. The list of exhibitors who registered for the Green Trail included:

Arlon Graphics UK DPF 204 is a 100 micron flexible white ecofriendly polyolefin film with a high tack removable adhesive. This film was designed to offer a more opaque greener option for interior and exterior POP applications. Compatible with Series 3520 a 90 micron clear eco-friendly polyolefin film with a permanent pressure sensitive adhesive.

Bright Green Technology Limited Bright Green Matrix - LED Backlighting System Optimised for outdoor and graphic display, Bright Green Matrix is a modular LED system for general backlighting - right up to billboard and beyond. Choose Bright Green Matrix for money saving retrofits of existing displays or for super efficient new builds. By reducing energy use by up to 88%, eliminating maintenance and delivering premium quality illumination, Bright Green LED systems replace conventional lighting technology and help save money, save energy and save carbon.

Clarity Software Clarity Software’s suite of CRM, MIS and e-Marketing systems offers huge eco benefits to its users. Using server and cloud based business processes immediately reduces paper consumption by over 50%. Capturing and interpreting key MIS information ensures shop floors run at optimum efficiency and clever off-cut management keeps stock levels and material usage at a minimum.

Doro Tape Ri-Jet 375: This is a non-PVC Polyolefine film. Polyolefin is the largest class of organic thermoplastic polymers. They are non-polar, odourless, nonporous materials. Ri-Jet 375 has no plasticisers, lead or phthalates in its constructions. It can be incinerated and will not give off gases such as dioxin.

Eco-Banner: This is a non-PVC TPO material. TPO (thermoplast Olefin) is a polymer of rubber, polypropylene and polyethylene. Giving it the flexibility it requires for use as banner material. It is 100% recyclable as it can be easily shredded; melted down and made into pellets. These can then be recycled to make various products such as pallets, pipes, household goods and boards to name but a few.

Drytac Europe The Interlam Eco range of overlaminates are polypropylene based films which do not contain PVCs and use H²O rather than a solvent to disperse the acrylic adhesive particles. They are coated only on one side with a moisture barrier which does not impede performance but facilitates easy disposal (less volume) as well as recycling and/or decomposition of the release paper. The cores and boxes are made of 70%+ recycled paper.

Panda Print fabric Panda Print printable fabric is made from bamboo, the choice for eco-friendly products. Bamboo is a hardy, fast growing, easily renewable resource that does not require the use of pesticides or replanting after it is harvested. The bamboo used to make Panda Print is grown on an organically farmed plantation and is not harvested from forests.

Bamboo Display Products This group of display products had an environmentally friendly bamboo construction, which also makes them lightweight. What makes bamboo eco-friendly? • Fastest growing plant on earth with increasing use as a versatile industrial material. • Rapid maturity cycle of 3-4 years with the viability to replace wood or metal components. • Provides a critical component in the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. • The variety of bamboo used in this product is plantation grown and not part of the Giant Panda’s diet.

Metsä Board recognised for environmental transparency Metsä Board (previously M-real) was one of 19 paper manufacturers to allow their environmental performance scrutinised by the World Wildlife Fund. Metsä Board was given the top ranking in the ‘Environmental management and reporting’ category, with a score of 72%. This is the second year of the WWF Environmental Paper Company Index (EPI 2011), with 50 companies asked to disclose key information on the origin of raw materials, production and environmental management. “WWF applauds the transparency of participating producers. By allowing evaluation of their environmental performance these companies are showing that they take environmental and social responsibility seriously,” said Emmanuelle Neyroumande, Manager of WWF International’s global pulp and paper work. This result recognises Metsä Board’s long-term commitment to transparency in its environmental performance and its dedication to determining targets and implementing management systems that encourage good environmental practice. Metsä Board actively promotes transparent reporting, e.g. through Paper Profiles, the environmental product declarations, its endorsement of management systems and certifications as well as participating in external surveys such as the WWF Check Your Paper programme. In 2009, the company also received 2nd place in the Carbon Disclosure Index (CDLI) of the Nordic Report. For more information on Metsä Board please email info@officepapers.com. HEARD ABOUT HARRIER?

Harrier offer a really cost effective trade service to copy shops for the bigger digital jobs that do not pay to produce in house. Harrier is one of the largest digital printing companies in the UK. Originally specialising in just photo products the company has grown in recent years to be able to provide a fully comprehensive trade only digital printing and finishing service. Harrier boasts unrivalled HP Indigo digital printing capacity across their fleet of presses including 1 x 5000 and 6 x 7000 machines. This awesome digital printing capacity is supported by comprehensive finishing in their state-of-the-art factory. This includes guillotining, perforating, creasing, folding, flood UV varnishing, laminating, wire-o binding, saddle stitching, perfect binding, PUR binding, hard cover making and casing in. Harrier provide a valuable service when copy shops are asked to quote jobs that are either not cost effective to produce on their in-house equipment, are going to take too long in-house or require better quality. Julian Marsh told QPP, “HP Indigos are renowned for producing print quality that is almost indiscernible from conventional litho printing, you are all most welcome to use our services.” The offer from Julian is simple; “For any print company considering investing in high end digital printing and finishing equipment I would ask them to consider the real cost of making that investment. Apart from the cash (or loans) required to get the equipment in they will often need to create a specialist environment which is air conditioned and dust free. They may need to employ specialist pre-press staff to handle the more complicated variable data requirements. All of this takes time and costs money. Why not ramp up off the back of Harrier, build sales and then make the investment once the concept has been proven? Let Harrier become their virtual print room. All the benefits of top of the range equipment, state-of-theart premises and fully trained people without any of the investment. Our click rates fall as low as 6p per A3 sheet, 4 colour simplex, and our buying power on paper and boards means we can often supply a job for less than a copy shop will pay for clicks and consumables.” Harrier deliver directly to end users using plain packaging or back to store for customer collection offering instant, online, free estimating via www.harrierprint.co.uk. Customers placing regular orders should speak to Julian as further discounts and savings are available. Tel: 01626 322045, Email: julian.marsh@harrierllc.co.uk. This is now about to change. reflectra products when caught by light create stunning effects and strong visibility, provoking great response and reaction. Beer Test Yesterday scientists revealed that beer contains small traces of female hormones. To prove their theory, the scientists fed 100 men 12 pints of beer and observed that 100% of them gained weight, talked excessively without making sense, became emotional, and couldn’t drive. No further testing is planned.

According to HOMER J. SIMPSON ‘Now son, you don’t want to drink beer. That’s for Daddies, and kids with fake IDs.’ ‘Marge, it takes two to lie. One to lie and one to listen.’ ‘Maybe, just once, someone will call me ‘sir’ without adding, ‘you’re making a scene.’’ ‘Marge, don’t discourage the boy! Weaseling out of things is important to learn. It’s what separates us from the animals! Except the weasel.’ ‘If you really want something in life you have to work for it. Now quiet, they’re about to announce the lottery numbers.’ ‘Don’t let Krusty’s death get you down, boy. People die all the time, just like that. Why, you could wake up dead tomorrow. Well, good night.’ ‘Son, when you participate in sporting events, it’s not whether you win or lose: it’s how drunk you get.’ ‘Lisa, if you don’t like your job you don’t strike. You just go in every day and do it really half-assed. That’s the American way.’ ‘Step aside everyone! Sensitive love letters are my specialty. ‘Dear Baby, Welcome to Dumpsville. Population: you.’’ ‘To alcohol! The cause of, and solution to, all of lifes problems!’ ‘I want to share something with you - the three sentences that will get you through life. Number one, ‘Cover for me.’ Number two, ‘Oh, good idea, boss.’ Number three, ‘It was like that when I got here.

Nudge, nudge… A man with a winking problem is applying for a position as a sales representative for a large print firm. The interviewer looks over his papers and says, ‘This is phenomenal. You’ve graduated from the best schools; your recommendations are wonderful, and your experience is unparalleled. Normally, we’d hire you without a second thought. However, a sales representative has a highly visible position, and we’re afraid that your

constant winking will scare off potential customers. I’m sorry we can’t hire you.’ ‘But wait,’ he said. ‘If I take two aspirin, I’ll stop winking!’ ‘Really? Great! Show me!’ So the applicant reaches into his jacket pocket and begins pulling out all sorts of condoms: red condoms, blue condoms, ribbed condoms, flavoured condoms; finally, at the bottom, he finds a packet of aspirin. He tears it open, swallows the pills, and stops winking. ‘Well,’ said the interviewer, ‘that’s all well and good, but this is a respectable company, and we will not have our employees womanising all over the country!’ ‘Womanising? What do you mean? I’m a happily married man!’ ‘Well then, how do you explain all these condoms?’ ‘Oh, that,’ he sighed. ‘Have you ever walked into a pharmacy, winking, and asked for aspirin?

Marriage prep. A woman in her eighties made the evening news because she was getting married for the fourth time. The following day she was being interviewed by a local TV station, and the commentator asked about what it felt to be married again at that age and would she share part of her previous experiences, since it seem quite unique the fact that her new husband was a ‘funeral director.’ After a short time to think, a smile came to her face and she proudly explained that she had first married a banker when she was in her twenties, in her forties she married a circus ring master, and in her sixties she married a vicar and now in her eighties, a funeral director. The amazed commentator asked her why she had married men with such diverse vocations. With a smile on her face she explained, ‘I married one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, and four to go.’

MORE SALESMEN JOKERS What do you have to know to be a real estate salesman? Lots. A policeman came upon a supersalesman about to jump from a bridge and yelled, “Wait, Fellow! Please don’t do that !!!” The salesman said, “Why not?” and proceeded to expound on his views on the shaky economy, declining family life and Cameron politics. Shortly thereafter, they both jumped. Insurance agent to would-be client: “Don’t let me frighten you into a hasty decision. Sleep on it tonight. If you wake in the morning, give me a call then and let me know.

Salesman: Would you like to buy a pocket calculator? Customer: No, thanks. I know how many pockets I have. A traveling salesman was held up by a bad storm in the Thailand. He sent an e-mail to his corporate headquarters advising them that he was stranded for a few days and requested instructions. The reply came back shortly: “Begin your holiday as of yesterday.” I’m getting married to a very successful car salesman. I’m so excited. I know you’ve been staring at my ring. Isn’t it fabulous? He sold it to me. Salesman: That suit looks nice. It fits like a bandage. Customer: Thanks. I bought it by accident. Ned: What does your Dad sell? Ed: Salt. Ned: Well, my dad is a salt seller, too. Ed: Shake. How do salespeople traditionally greet each other? “Hi. Nice to meet you. I’m better than you.” Policeman: Why didn’t you check your speedometer? Driver: It broke when I hit 100. What does a carpet salesman give his wife for Valentine’s Day? Rugs and kisses! How can you tell when a salesperson is lying? His lips are moving. A keen country lad applied for a salesman’s job at a city department store. In fact it was the biggest store in the world - you could get anything there. The boss asked him, “Have you ever been a salesman before?” Yes, I was a salesman in the country” said the lad. The boss liked the cut of him and said, “You can start tomorrow and I’ll come and see you when we close up.” The day was long and arduous for the young man, but finally 5 o’clock came around. The boss duly fronted up and asked, “How many sales did you make today?” “One,” said the young salesman. “Only one?” blurted the boss, “most of my staff make 20 or 30 sales a day. How much was the sale worth?” “Three hundred thousand dollars,” said the young man. “How did you manage that?” asked the flabbergasted boss. “Well,” said the salesman “this man came in and I sold him a small fish hook, then a medium hook and finally a really large hook. Then I sold him a small fishing line, a medium one and a huge big one. I asked him where he was going fishing and he said down the coast. I said he would probably need a boat, so I took him down to the boat department and sold him that twenty foot schooner with the twin engines. Then he said his Volkswagen probably wouldn’t be able to pull it, so I took him to the car department

and sold him the new Deluxe Cruiser.” The boss took two steps back and asked in astonishment, “You sold all that to a guy who came in for a fish hook?” “No,” the new salesman replied. “He actually came in for a bottle of aspirin for his wife’s migraine. I told him, “Your weekend’s shot. You should probably go fishing.”

One day a traveling salesman… …was driving down a back country road at about 30 mph when he noticed that there was a threelegged chicken running alongside his car. He stepped on the gas but at 50 miles per hour. The chicken was still keeping up. After about a mile of running the chicken ran up a farm lane and into a barn behind an old farm house. The salesman had some time to kill so he turned around and drove up the farm lane. He knocked at the door and when the farmer answered he told him what he had just seen. The farmer said that he was a geneticist and had developed this breed of chicken because he, his wife and his son each like a drumstick when they have chicken and this way they only have to kill one chicken. “That’’s the most fantastic thing I’ve ever heard,” said the salesman. “How do they taste?” “I don’t know,” said the farmer. “We’ve never caught one.”

Sales Patter Three salesmen and three printers are travelling by train to an exhibition in Birmingham. At the station, the three printers each buy a ticket and watch as the three salesmen buy just one ticket between them. ‘How are the three of you going to travel on only one ticket?’ asks one of the printers. ‘Watch and learn,’ answers one of the salesmen. They all board the train. The printers take their respective seats but all three salesmen cram into a toilet and close the door behind them. Shortly after the train has departed, the conductor comes around collecting tickets. He knocks on the toilet door and says, ‘Ticket please.’ The door opens just a crack and a single arm emerges with a ticket in hand. The conductor takes it and moves on. The printers see this and agree it was quite a clever idea. So after the game, they decide to copy the salesmen on the return trip and save some money (being clever with money, and all that). When they get to the station, they buy a single ticket for the return trip. To their astonishment, the salesmen don’t buy a ticket at all ‘How are you going to travel without a ticket?’ says one perplexed printer. ‘Watch and learn,’ answers a clever salesmen. When they board the train the three printers cram into a toilet and soon after the three salesmen cram into another nearby. The train departs. Shortly afterwards, one of the salesmen leaves the toilet and walks over to the toilet where the printers are hiding. He knocks on the door and says, ‘Ticket please’

He took the knight off.

Me and my machine: Number 10 Downing Street and its Intec DMP450

Peter Swann, Intec Printing Solutions Channel Manager for the UK and Ireland stands outside 10 Downing Street Inset: Prime Minister David Cameron, who together with his Cabinet, could be using the Intec DMP450 to produce confidential government documents

CONFIDENTIAL

Supporting British business lies at the heart of the coalition government’s policies. Forget quantitative easing - there is no better assistance than placing an order. And that is exactly what the Cabinet Office, which supports Prime Minister David Cameron and the Cabinet of the United Kingdom, has done. On hearing about the capabilities of the Intec range of heavy stock colour digital printers, the Cabinet Office put in a request for Peter Swann, Channel Manager for Intec Printing Solutions Limited in the UK and Ireland, to visit with samples. After reviewing user stories at www.intecprinters. com it was decided that an Intec printer would meet the government’s need to print on a range of heavy stocks. The Intec DMP450 multi media production unit was deemed the most suitable. This industry-beating system incorporates a multi-substrate feeder and stacker to enable printing of up to 25kgs of media at a time. It can also handle stocks up to 600gsm thick. “I already have customers who print for Royalty and

celebrities and to add 10 Downing Street to this list is fabulous news,” says Peter Swann. “It shows that the British government has complete faith in our product particularly during a time when it has to be so careful with taxpayers’ money. “The DMP450 is located in the print room at 10 Downing Street and is being used to produce everything from business cards through to invitations, government documents, white papers and reports.” Robert Syms, MP (Member of Parliament) for Poole (where Intec is headquartered), was pleased to hear of Intec’s success. He says: “Intec Printing Solutions is doing what we need to do as a country, which is getting out around the world and selling British products to emerging markets. This is a solution to our current economic difficulties - well done Intec Printing Solutions,” he concludes. Intec Printing Solutions Limited distributes its systems to over 70 countries via an extensive network of partners.
