Royal Academy Schools Show
THE Royal Academy Schools staged its annual Premium Interim Projects exhibition recently to show the development of students work during their second year of study. The show provided a unique opportunity to view the exciting new work by the artists at the interim point of their three year postgraduate fine art studies at the UK’s most prestigious art school. Several of the works on display included those produced using Epson large format printers and projectors, accessible to the students in the on-site Epson sponsored Digital Media Suite. Epson provides state of the art large format digital printing and AV projection technologies to the Schools so students can experiment with a broad range of media and materials to produce their art works. Through this experimentation with Epson technologies students are able to develop their creativity and explore the possibilities that both old and new technologies offer to them. All the students have worked with Epson’s large format printer and/or projectors at some time during their course. Included in the exhibition were: Caroline Abbotts used Epson films printed on a large format inkjet printer to produce negative images of the starry sky taken from Earth’s North Celestial Pole. The Epson films are processed manually in huge handmade developing tanks and transferred to glass sheets that are propped against the gallery walls in layered compositions. Rebecca Ackroyd displayed a large curved work made of two closely-positioned freestanding panels carrying a vast digitally printed image of a close-up of a luxury white bath towel. Matt Ager combined digitally printed photographic images with clothing, found objects and industrial materials such as plastic sheeting to create wall-based assemblages. Josie Cockram utilised two Epson projectors to
synchronise moving images onto a floating tentlike screen that occupied a centre stage position within one of RA’s historic galleries. Max Prus combined large painted canvases that contained inkjet-printed collaged details with sound works, texts and digitally printed cut-out sculptural figures. Mark Hampson, Head of Materials Processes at
the RA, recognising the strengths of the collaboration that exists between the Schools and Epson and its affect upon the exhibition, says: “The creative inventiveness and breadth of approaches evident in this year’s Premiums Show demonstrated the importance of top quality workshop facilities and equipment. The RA Schools is able, through the generosity and sponsorship of Epson, to offer its students amazing access to the latest developments in digital image making, audio visual display systems and unparalleled expertise in technical advancements in printing. The influence of these opportunities is extremely apparent in the work of our students who always impress with their abilities to utilise, redefine and subvert the facilities they are exposed to. Our unique collaborative relationship with Epson is a fantastic experience where industry and art, commerce and culture merge with incredible results.”

Sense Creative’s LumeJet S200 new markets DARLINGTON based print and photo product specialist, Sense Creative, has signed a contract for the purchase a LumeJet S200 printer. The move is designed to extend the company’s portfolio of products and specifically to target the photographic market with the ultra-high quality output from the LumeJet. Tim Thompson, Sense Creative’s Managing Director, explained how the company had come to order a LumeJet machine. “We saw a couple of reviews of the LumeJet S200 in the trade press which, as we were looking at the photographic market, were really interesting. We followed up with LumeJet and when we finally saw the quality of the samples they blew us away.” He continued; “We think that photographers are a key market for us but, to service the sector adequately, we need the highest quality print possible. The output from the LumeJet means that we can happily reach into the photographic market. There is no other machine on the market where we can approach photographers and be confident that we can exceed their expectations.” The LumeJet printer, the S200, takes 305 mm photographic roll paper for page sizes up to A3 landscape double-page spread, full bleed, including trim (1000 x 305 mm maximum) – ideal for lay flat books. Using the RGB colour space, it is ICC profiled and achieves amazing colour fidelity, including hard-to-print Pantone spot colours like Reflex Blue, neons, metallics and pastels, as well as flawless solid black. Initially Sense Creative will be using the S200 to deliver a range of photo products via a web to print system from its website. It is looking to handle thousands of files a day, giving it a high order rate with each order having a relatively low value. Driven through the company’s facebook and
Instagram channels the relatively low cost of the products allows end-users to sample real benefits the LumeJet S200 can provide. The company is currently setting up a dedicated portal for its photonic print offering and is inviting photographers to register on the site to give them access to a range of products and special offers that will be available once the LumeJet is fully commissionedThe S200 printer is scheduled for delivery at Sense Creative at the end of April and, in the meantime, the company is working through the whole backend process, developing a dedicated section of its website to serve the S200 clients.
Commenting on the order Miles Bentley, LumeJet’s Commercial Director said; “It’s interesting to be working with a company that is so commercially focussed and wanting to explore the limits of the printer. While Sense Creative has a clear aim of utilising the ultra-high quality output the S200 has to offer in the photographic market, it is also asking us wider questions about what else can be achieved with the machine. The concept of running the S200 on a virtual continuous output system, served via a web-to-print gateway, printing thousands of individual files a day is exciting.” www.sensecrative.co.uk
New Growth Creates Job Opportunities at SMGG
STANFORD Marsh Group Graphics (SMGG), the commercial graphics division of Stanford Marsh Group, has been growing apace of late. Widely regarded as a leading independent solutions provider for the wide-format print sector, SMGG offers solutions from Canon, Epson, HP, Mimaki, Mutoh and Océ amongst others, alongside the associated consumables and finishing devices. Following the company’s appointment to Mimaki’s authorised reseller network in November 2013, SMGG expanded its flagship showroom in Bristol. The company, which employs around 100 staff, has its headquarters in Worcester and also has offices in Derbyshire, South Wales and Scotland. Interest in the company’s graphics offerings has spiked considerably of late. However, this in
itself has caused additional challenges. Adrian Painter, Director at SMGG, explains, “Whilst the level of interest in SMGG and its offerings is a nice problem to have, we are first and foremost a ‘value add’ business. We recognise the need to remain proactive and help educate our customers on new market opportunities, growth areas and to spend the time selecting the right equipment. Our ethos is to educate and advise our customers before they hit the pressure point of having to make a snap decision because of breakdown or a sudden increase in workload. “As a truly independent supplier of an extremely wide range of printing solutions, we offer sound advice on how to get the best performance from any given machine. It is our mutual goal to understand where our customers wish to be, share the vision they have for their business and help them achieve those goals.” As a result of the business’s success, SMGG is now looking for new personnel to join its rapidly expanding sales team. Firstly, the company will
expand its field-based and telephone support team with a new appointment. Painter comments, “We are being inundated with on-line and telephone enquiries regarding the solutions we offer and, at present, are being mostly reactive in our response. We need someone with the right skills and knowledge to join our team and focus on these enquiries and see them through to completion. This office based support role would ideally be located in Bristol.” Secondly, to complement its existing fieldbased team, SMGG is also looking for someone with experience in the graphics/signage market to promote and sell the full range of hardware and media supplies. This individual can be based throughout the UK, with no geographical restrictions. To enquire about current sales vacancies, email recruitment@stanfordmarsh.co.uk. KONICA Minolta, the largest exhibitor at IPEX 2014, is celebrating after a show success that is set to net €3.5 million worth of new business as it continues to expand into new markets. Visitors to the 1200 sq metre stand that had 12 live-running print systems and marketleading software and systems demonstrations throughout each of the six days have helped the business enabler to reap the rewards. One of the top attractions was the KM-1, the B2+ UV inkjet colour sheetfed press, which was demonstrated three times a day. At the show it was confirmed that beta testing will start later this year at customer sites in Japan, North America and Europe, with full production starting in 2015. The press will help commercial printers produce high-quality print jobs capturing new market opportunities on the back of brand owners looking to develop highly personalised short run packaging The KM-1 is especially designed for short print runs, extremely tight deadlines and variable data processing. The demonstrations were of particular interest to commercial and packaging printers, as well as folding carton printers. In another technology showcase at Ipex for the first time, Konica Minolta demonstrated roll-to-roll label printing at up to 18m/min with its Konica Minolta bizhub PRESS C70RLC. Konica Minolta’s growing portfolio covers commercial production, packaging, wide format, document printing, corporate, on-demand publishing, direct mail, labels and photoprinting markets, as well as workflow automation areas and other partner pre-press and post-press solutions, plus cross media applications. www.konicaminolta.co.uk

University Install Morgana DigiBook 150 PUR Binder DESIGN & Print Services Department at Loughborough University has become the latest print-focused operation to install a DigiBook 150 PUR perfect binding machine from Morgana Systems Ltd. The product replaces an existing hot-melt perfect binding system at the University. Commenting on the reasons for the purchase, Mark Ramsay, Print Services Manager within the Design & Print Services section of Loughborough University, said: “Many of our University Research Departments conduct distance learning activities in quite far-flung territories, sending significant amounts of material out to African and Asian countries. They were finding that product that was bound with our existing hot melt binding system was not sufficiently rugged for the demands being placed on it — it might have been the heat in these countries or just the more frequent handling of the publications, but they were falling apart far too easily, with pages becoming loose or lost. “Our own research pointed us towards PUR binding as the ideal
solution, and whilst we did look at one other system, the price tag didn’t fit our budget: the Morgana offered all of the benefits that we needed for a price that we could afford. I would venture to say that the DigiBook 150 has probably already paid for itself: the distance learning publications are holding together significantly better, and Loughborough University students in the School of the Arts and Design School are benefiting from excellent binding of their final course work — some of which is on unusual, coated substrates, whilst other students go for bespoke sizes in order to stand out: the Morgana product copes with it all.”
The DigiBook 150 is the entrylevel PUR perfect binding product. It is capable of approximately 150 cycles per hour, it can bind publications with spine thicknesses from 2mm through to 50mm, in book sizes up to 380 x 320mm. A key feature of the 150, and across the DigiBook range, is the patented glue application system. Spine and side glue is applied using an adjustable slot applicator allowing accurate control over both functions to give the best possible results. All the machines have an hermetically sealed glue and cleaning system which gives the quickest possible start-up and shutdown of the system with minimal glue wastage. PUR is the strongest, most flexible binding adhesive available, offering several additional advantages over other hot-melt adhesives. When inks, coatings or digital print toners are present in the spine area these can often compromise the strength of a typical hot-melt perfect binding. PUR is resistant to this and will form a super-strong bond with all weights and finishes of paper stocks. In addition PUR works well with synthetic and recycled-content stocks.
and reliability are all optimised for maximum productive uptime and profit. The printers use Epson UltraChrome DS ink, a specially developed new aqueous ink, which produces outstanding images with vibrant colours, intense blacks, sharp contours and smooth gradations. Finally, Epson’s first direct to garment printer — the SureColor SC-F2000 — will be demonstrating fast, efficient T-shirt printing. www.epson.co.uk
PUR RANGE THE DigiBook range of machines are suited to both traditional and digital printers who require either short-run or production capacity PUR perfect bound books to a professional standard. The innovative DigiBook range of machines are equipped with a patented closed gluing system, where the spine and side gluing is applied by a slot applicator for the utmost binding quality and accuracy. DigiBook machines are innovative bookbinding products designed and built for the very latest market requirements. They are easy to use, even by non-specialised personnel, via a touch screen panel with icon graphics, suitable for the programming of all precision operations in just a few seconds. These include both start-up and shutdown and use a new, innovative system that is covered by a number of international patents. The applicator is direct, and is hermetically sealed, without odour or toxic fume emissions, meaning that no extractor fan is required. This solution allows for the use of polyurethane glue in cartridges of up to 3kg, all adding up to simple and waste-free binding. www.morgana.co.uk

Sydney Beaumont launch flat sheet sign range SYDNEY Beaumont (Leeds) Ltd, distributors of self-adhesive vinyls since 1966, are now able to offer an industry leading range of flat sheet products for the sign maker. Many well known brands are now available for the first time from Sidney Beaumont’s central Leeds warehousing facility including Foamalite Foam PVC, Correx, Akyprint and Smart-X. Aluminium composite sheet is also offered in a high end digital print grade, AluprintDigital and a hoarding panel grade, ecoACM. Geoff Leigh, Sidney Beaumont’s Managing Director, explains the thinking behind stocking the flat sheet range “In the Yorkshire area we are a predominantly collection based business with our sign making customers calling during the day to pick up their orders of self adhesive vinyl products. Over the years many of these customers have told us how handy it would be to collect flat sheet products as well, meaning we would literally be a one stop shop for all their materials. Now, being part of the Pyramid Display Materials Group, this has given us access to the industries leading sheet product range and made this a reality I feel our customers will genuinely appreciate”. The flat sheet products are stored in an innovative mini vertical racking system christened “The Toast Rack”. Morgana Launches DigiBook 200 PUR Binder MORGANA Systems used Ipex to launch a new addition to its popular PUR perfect binder range. The DigiBook 200 was a late addition to the company’s show line-up, with the machine only arriving in the UK on the Friday before the show. The new model sits above the entry level DigiBook 150, featuring more automation than the basic version. As its name suggests, the product can bind up to 200 books per hour. Commenting on the addition to the range, Ray Hillhouse, Sales and Marketing Director at Morgana Systems, said: “Customers like the range that we offer, but have been asking for that perfect product: the one that sits just above entry level, but is not as expensive as the 300 books per hour model! We believe that we have it in this new machine: priced very competitively at £27,000, the specification provides those additional automatic features that prospects were keen to get.” “The book block measuring capability is typical of the features that have been added. It sets up the heads automatically meaning that users can switch from one size of book to another very swiftly and easily. The gluing heads are the same across the range, so the bind quality is identical.”
The DigiBook 200 handles spine lengths from 110 to 320mm and the maximum thickness is 50mm. Retractable spine milling means that the device can go from soft to hard cover binding at the flick of a switch. Side gluing for the cover hinge is adjustable depending upon the cover style required. Hotronix Dual Air Fusion Debuts at FESPA THE Hotronix Dual Air Fusion will make its debut at FESPA Munich, Germany (May 20th – 23rd, 2014) where Ben Robinson, General Manager Hotronix will be available to demonstrate this latest addition to the Hotronix heat press. With two printing stations, the new Dual Air Fusion increases productivity by nearly 50% based on a single operator time study when compared to a standard swingerstyle heat press. STAHLS’ credits this performance gain to the Dual Air Fusion’s ability to rapidly shuttle between the two individual workstations and the capability to adjust application time and multiple pressure settings based on the position of the upper platen via its touch screen technology. With this technology, a user can configure the Dual Air Fusion’s A and B workstations for a variety of different
platen sizes and accommodate various heat application settings, enabling a dynamic range of mixedmedia applications. With the Dual Air Fusion’s optional laser alignment system, operators can realise additional productivity gains: featuring four independently adjustable lasers per platen, the laser alignment system enables precision decoration for full front, left chest and numerous other garment locations. The laser alignment system can be operated utilising the touch screen technology and lasers will turn on and off automatically to accommodate the station in use. Perfect for direct to garment printers, the Dual Air Fusion makes pre-heating, pre-curing, pressing, and post-curing easy. Set your A station for pre-treatment and your B station for post-curing and cut your set-up and production time in
half. With exceptional pressure per square inch, fibrillation is eliminated, making printed images crisp and vibrant. The Dual Air Fusion is built around a sturdy, corrosion resistant, die-cast aluminum framework and features a number of proven Hotronix innovations. Features include a
touch screen control panel, Auto-Adjust pressure, Quick Change platen latch, Threadability and a cast-in tubular heating element. For more information on all STAHLS’ products and services, please visit www.StahlsInternational.com

Epson UK expands ‘Sure’ brand inkjet printers EPSON UK aims to launch over 10 new inkjet printers for a range of professional print applications over the next 18 months. This impressive programme is part of Epson’s strategy to deliver a comprehensive choice of affordable, high-quality print solutions to commercial, signage, décor, label, textile and photo print specialists. Over the last two years alone, Epson has introduced 10 professional print products under the ‘Sure’ brand. These have included several ‘firsts’ which have opened up important new markets for Epson and brought new levels of quality and versatility to the industry. These include Epson’s first single-pass digital label press and UV technology (the SurePress L-6034V), its first mini dry photolabs (the SureLab range), its first signage/POS wide-format printers (the SureColor SC-S range), its first dye sublimation printers (the SureColor SC-F range), its first direct-to-garment textile printer (the SureColor SC-F2000) and a newgeneration of aqueous display graphics printers (the SureColor SC-T range). The rate of new product launches will continue and by 2016 Epson will offer over 33 professional production printers with dedicated Epson inks to the Label & Packaging, Sign & Display, Production Photo and Textile markets. “Epson’s strategy is quite simple – but very ambitious,” says Phil McMullin, Sales Manager ProGraphics, Epson UK. “We want to provide the market with the best combination of printer and ink technology to deliver high quality, superb reliability and the best all round return on investment for the broadest range of professional print applications.”
INNOVATIVE EPSON TECHNOLOGY IS DRIVING PRODUCT INNOVATION Epson spends £1.2m a day (approximately 6% of annual turnover) on R&D which is driving innovation and new technology, ink and product development for consumer, business, professional print, government, medical, finance and retail markets across the world. The core of Epson’s print technology is the Micro Piezo inkjet printhead. In 2003, having already revolutionised photo-printing by bringing it into the home, Epson set its sights on realizing the true potential of its Micro Piezo printhead technology. To achieve the high-speed, high-quality, highreliability, and high-efficiency printing demanded by the commercial print industry, it was necessary to develop the thinnest possible piezo element for maximum control over drop size. The result was the 2007 launch of Epson Thin Film Piezo (TFP). Since then, TFP has been Epson’s flagship technology for large-format printers, where fine image quality is required to create graphics with outstanding detail, colour expression, and increased productivity.
Last year, Epson took another leap forward in the evolution of its thin-film piezo technology with the launch of PrecisionCore. The revolutionary
Drytac ‘invisibly perfect’ FaceMount DRYTAC’S FaceMount mounting adhesive has been engineered for the face mounting of virtually any image to clear substrates such as PetG, acrylic, Plexiglas and polycarbonate. It is also appropriate for lenticular imaging applications and backlit display transparencies. FaceMount is a 25µ optically clear polyester mounting film coated on both sides with a pressure sensitive, solvent based acrylic adhesive which is protected prior to use on both sides with siliconised polyester release liner. It is available with permanent adhesive on both sides. Facemount mounting adhesive is optically clear and is ideal for demanding applications where colour integrity is of paramount importance, such as high-end proofing and photographic laboratory printing, museum quality fine art and giclée printing. Steve Broad, Drytac Sales Director Europe, comments, “FaceMount meets the very highest standards in clear mounting applications at a cost-effective price point. Once the image is applied to the surface, FaceMount will disappear and you will just be left with your original artwork. It is the latest in a series of solutions we’ve developed to meet specific applications and is a must for all who want to mount artworks behind any type of clear substrate.” Drytac’s entire range of films and adhesives is exclusively distributed throughout the UK and Ireland by Antalis. For further information on Drytac’s range of films and adhesives: www.drytac.co.uk
PrecisionCore Micro TFP print chip is the result of one of the largest R&D investments in the company’s history and builds on the Epson’s materials science skills and MEMS manufacturing technology. Micro TFP doubles the piezo element’s flexing power, allowing further miniaturisation and scalability opening up new possibilities for fluid handling and substrate compatibility. The modular PrecisionCore chips can be combined in different ways to build a variety of high-performance printheads, from lineheads for industrial presses to serial printheads for desktop printers. The first products to use PrecisionCore are the SurePress L-6034V digital label press and the SureColor SC-F2000 direct-to-garment T-shirt printer and it will be used in an increasing number of products in the future. Alongside its printhead technology, Epson’s ink technology is an important part of every Epson professional print production solution. Today, Epson is the only company to develop and manufacture the full range of aqueous, solvent, resin, UV, dye sublimation and textile inks. As a result, every component of an Epson solution – hardware, printhead, ink and software – is optimised to deliver the best possible performance. Ultimately, Epson’s strategy is to continue to refine its compact, energy saving and high precision technologies by leveraging its core Micro Piezo and PrecisionCore printhead technologies to develop products that meet the needs of the commercial and industrial digital printing sectors, and emerging markets. The vision and ultimate aim of Minoru Usui, President of Seiko Epson, is that everything will be printed by Epson. www.epson.co.uk

InPrint Conference Report
Digital inkjet and smart screen printing were among the topics discussed in detail at InPrint’s functional and decorative industrial print conference programme. In collaboration with ESMA, the non-profit association in Europe for specialist printing manufacturers and IMI, Europe’s inkjet technology conference organiser.
T
HE TWO-DAY CONFERENCE programme focused on speciality screen printing and industrial inkjet and highlighted the ‘best of both worlds’. It also showcased ESMA’s expertise particularly within the advanced functional print sector. During the two days, Peter Buttiens, CEO of ESMA and Robin McMillian, Chairman of ESMA’s Technical Exchange Committee gave a in-depth presentation on “Industrial Printing, the 360° View!”. Other sessions by ESMA members included Marabu on screen – inkjet – pad printing in direct product decoration, Sefar on the opportunities of industrial printing in screen printing and Encres Dubuit sharing its expertise on digital printing on 3D objects. Daniel Gandner, Senior Manager Marketing & Communication, Marabu says: “InPrint was the perfect platform for Marabu to present itself as a development partner for the industry. We were able to show our expertise of integrating screen, digital, and pad printing into complex production processes. Each printing technology and related ink system has its specific characteristics. This is why it is so important, at the moment of choice to fully understand the ink, the substrate, the machinery and all the production processes behind each technology.” Further key note discussions included ‘The Future of Digital Manufacture is Here’ by Tim Phillips, Xennia, ‘Create Value with Digital Decoration in Rapid Changing Mass Market’ by Volker Till, Till GmbH and ‘Industrial Single-Pass Printing for Decorative Surfaces’ by Michael Hesse, Hymmen. Mike Willis of IMI comments: “Over the past decade ink jet has been increasingly used for industrial decorative and functional applications and we were therefore delighted as co-organisers of the conference programme
to have helped stimulate the hugely interesting discussions that took place during this inaugural InPrint event.” Peter Buttiens of ESMA concludes: “With its strong focus on specialty and industrial printing applications, InPrint proved to be an excellent match for ESMA. The quality of the visitors was excellent and so was the attendance at the seminars! Attendees were delighted by the variety of topics covered and the level of expertise provided. There were many subject areas that overlapped a number of sectors providing a great deal of interest for everyone. We were keen to present an unrivalled knowledge bank to enable everyone to leave with a greater level of understanding to help them grow their business both physically and profitably.” To download the ESMA presentation: www.esma.com/inprint For more information: www.esma.com and www.TheIJC.com

An Epic Yes to Scodix S Series Press
EPIC Printing Services has joined the growing list of commercial printers that understand the business benefits of investing in a Scodix S75 digital enhancement press. The Dorchester creative print and fulfilment specialist that works with local and national businesses, including luxury brands Dior and Estee Lauder as well as High Street names Lush and New Look and auctioneers Dukes, chose the Scodix S75 digital enhancement solution to creatively complete production from its B2 six-colour Mitsubishi and twocolour Heidelberg GTO litho presses and its digital Indigo 5000 press. “We are very excited about installing the Scodix and are looking forward to helping clients deliver extremely effective printed pieces within budget,” comments Managing Director Mark Downey. “Securing this deal at Ipex is a fantastic endorsement of the business enhancing capabilities of this sensation engaging digital enhancement technology,” states Kobi Bar, Scodix CEO and CoFounder. “We are delighted that Epic Printing Services has joined the growing number of operations enthused by the system’s ability to offer interactive print that stands out from the crowd.” This and a way to add value to print was what Mr. Downey was particularly keen to find: “50 percent of what we do is in the cosmetics industry and we have been looking for the last two or three years at how we can provide greater value to the printed sheet through building special effects. Traditionally this was expensive with short run work.” Epic Printing Services chose the Scodix S75 digital enhancement solution after a careful evaluation of how the special effects were applied: “Our market place is short run high quality print and we wanted to be able to offer additional
enhancements that engaged both the end user’s vision and touch,” states Mr. Downey. “That tactile capability of the Scodix was very important to us. We believe the future of print is engaging more senses than just sight because online does that. Touch and smell are what we will be focusing on.” A review was conducted of other market available solutions from inline print capabilities to traditional post press foiling and embossing but, comments Mr. Downey: “The
moment we saw the Scodix we felt that it was spot on for our market place.” As for return on investment he says there are two areas the Scodix S75 digital enhancement solution will perform strongly in. “It will deliver greater gross margin and will act as a Trojan horse for new business development,” he states, expanding: “It is not installed yet and it is already a good conversation starter and a door opener.” This is important for Epic, not least because of the changing print production landscape: “For our client base and market place print runs are decreasing. There is growing differentiation within the industry between those business models that seek to produce high volume print at increasingly efficient speeds and those that seek to build variety and creativity into their output.” As for the other pluses of the Scodix S75 digital enhancement solution Mr. Downey says: “The great benefit of the Scodix is that work can be enhanced offline from a press and that means small or large runs don’t dictate work flow or job completion timings. It is also ideally placed to take advantage of database mining so we can now create something very special for, say, a client’s top 100 customers. Our clients are starting
to recognise the importance of database management. We are in the early stages but there are signs over the next five years of this becoming a more important part of what we are doing. It is an area in which we have always tried to offer a consultative progamme as a supportive print provider that delivers much more practical print. The Scodix system will help us continue to do that.” Mark Nixon, Managing Director of Conversion adds: “Gaining this order from Epic is again confirmation that progressive UK printing companies are looking to differentiate. Excellent print and great service are no longer enough to set companies apart, but by adding another sense of depth and touch to one dimensional print, it offers their clients a way of standing out from their competition. Epic understands this opportunity and involved their top clients in the research by printing and applying the Scodix SENSE to the sheets. They gained a resounding approval. “For me, Scodix is the next evolution in print, re-igniting and modernising its appeal by becoming much more interactive. It’s good news for all progressive UK print solution providers.” www.scodix.com. www.epicteam.co.uk www.conversion-uk.co.uk
Huge success for Vivid Laminating Technologies VIVID’S Sales Director Richard Marlow said “IPEX was a superb show for the team. We were inundated with visitors eager to see our new kit”. The Leicestershire based designer and manufacturer of laminating systems came to the show with two simple objectives; to launch new products to their existing dealer network and to further expand their market share and global reach with new distributors. Vivid used the London event to launch seven new models of laminating systems, including their updated Easymount Sign Wide Format Laminators and the upgraded pneumatic versions of their best-selling Matrix Single Sided Digital Laminators. The pneumatic models will give greater productivity and include a duplex version for double-sided lamination and encapsulation. IPEX was also to be the last show for outgoing Export Manager Sharon Marvin, who will be retiring from the company after 25 years of service. Sharon said “We had a large number of guests from outside of the UK visiting us by appointment. The exhibition gave us the perfect platform to introduce our latest systems to our current distributors, but I am also
thrilled to have signed contracts with a new generation of dealers who will now be distributing our systems” Sharon’s role of Export Manager will be taken over by current Product Manager Bruce Cozens, who has himself been with the company for over 20 years. “The withdrawal of some of the print manufacturers was seen as a negative” continued Richard “but the general feedback regarding the show was that IPEX 2014 will be seen as great for a number of finishing companies, including ourselves” Vivid will next be exhibiting in July at the ExpoPrint Latin America show in Sao Paulo, Brazil and have recently confirmed their attendance at GraphExpo, Chicago, which takes place at the end of September. New Royal Mail Mailmark™ is made simple with Neopost FOLLOWING a £70million investment, Royal Mail will soon be introducing the next generation of franked mail - Mailmark™. At Neopost we see Mailmark™ as an exciting initiative that will ultimately make franking an even more attractive option. Royal Mail’s Mailmark™ will be progressively introduced during the course of 2014.
So what is Royal Mail Mailmark™? Mailmark™ is a new generation of franking mark that replaces the traditional ‘town and crown’ die with a 2D barcode that carries machine readable information on the user and mailpiece. Mailmark™ offers the potential to track mail location and delivery, improve reporting and management of tariffs. Over time all business mail will carry this barcode. However Royal Mail will continue to process existing franking formats for a period after Mailmark™ becomes available, so for those that do not want to take up this new technology there is no immediate change.
Mailmark™ means smarter mail for your business Some of the benefits of new Mailmark™ for your business are: • Simplified access to Royal Mail products • Increased intelligence gives potential for new products and services • More professional and modern image helps to add customer value • Cessation of ‘posting out of area’ requirement
With Mailmark™ you always pay the right amount for postage With new Mailmark™ the correct postage is always applied so you benefit from: • No surcharges – avoid customer dissatisfaction and extra cost • Simple tariff update • Accurate product selection • Expected tariff differential • Mailmark™ will always be the best value tariff in the franking channel
Who will benefit from using Mailmark™? • Retail customers using low sort, unsorted or meter options for Letters and Large Letters
So what do franking machine users need to do? As the old franking service remains, there is no need to upgrade or replace machines as a result of Mailmark™. The business case for replacement will depend on the volume of mail sent and the tariff differences. At this stage the pricing of Mailmark™ versus other Royal Mail tariffs is unknown. Other factors to consider when making this decision are the productivity, convenience and cost benefits of a new machine. Depending on the current machine, these could include integrated scales, intuitive touch screens, print quality and the capability to reclaim VAT on eligible Royal Mail postal services. Over the coming months Royal Mail will be releasing more information and details on Mailmark™ – to keep up to speed with all these developments you can also register for regular e-mail bulletins from Neopost.
• Access customers sending machinable Letters and Large Letters • Business Mail Advanced and Response Services customers

The wider picture of imaging Looking through the wide-angled lens Martin Christie visited the relaunched Photography Show at the NEC back in March. It didn’t spring any great surprises — and that itself was a bit of a surprise considering all the things developing in the wider world of digital imaging.
N
EW PRODUCT LAUNCHES from the usual manufacturers, of course, but essentially more of the same, including, no doubt, most of the public and trade attendance. Exhibitions tend to have their own momentum, and tend to be led by the traditional exhibitors more than the promoters, so it was inevitable that this next generation show carried more than a little of the flavour of its predecessor, the long running Focus. Despite the media hype in the last year around 3D printing, for example, there was not even a whiff of multidimensional creation, which would have been a natural subject for digital image capture. Perhaps the industry jury is still out on whether it is going to be the next big thing or next week’s fish and chip wrapper. Canon, after all, were making a big thing about 3D capture a couple of years ago at one of their exclusive trade shows, but perhaps the indifferent public reaction to films and videos featuring the system have dampened enthusiasm for the format. What we did get at Birmingham at least was the good news that despite all the popularity of social network and images flashed around the world — and now also deliberately deleted — in seconds, there is no replacement to good ‘old fashioned’ printing. The hard copy is still the ultimate test of picture quality, and the presentation of a print will always be more satisfying than squinting at the invariably cracked and finger printed screen of an iPhone. As well as lots of new cameras — well at least new versions of essentially the same cameras — there were quite a number of live demonstrations of how to take better pictures, underlining the basic truth that despite all the impressive technology, it’s still the photographer not the camera that takes the picture. Having said that, Samsung did steal some of the show headlines with a mobile drone, bearing more than a passing resemblance to Short Circuits’ Johnny Five. But even that, still needs a human to programme it — for the moment at least. Something like that could be a popular novelty at outside events, and I’m sure some wedding photographers would wish they had one that stand in for them.
More human skills were in demand in workshops on framing and mounting, the old favourites that still create that added value to printing, and which I have recommended before as possible profit generators for the digital bureau. There aren’t many traditional framers left in most towns, and it’s not a service you can easily buy into through the internet because you can’t see and touch what you are getting. It’s very much a hands on service, quite literally, where the feel and perception of the product counts. Developments in media, mount material and adhesives are all making this type of finishing more convenient to outlets that have limited space. If you are offering high quality inkjet printing, on photographic papers, art or canvas, it makes perfect sense to look at additional product and services, whether ready made frames, or custom mounts. And while mentioning photographic, it’s worth underlining that most photo mini labs now use inkjet printers, even if they are embedded in compact units. They chop down the media rolls into the required sizes quickly and efficiently, and the results on current heavyweight gloss and matte papers are almost indistinguishable from what a customer would perceive as a photo print. Those traditional high street photo labs that survive have gone this way and also taken on the instant gift items like mugs and T shirts, just as digital prints shops have, so no reason why the latter shouldn’t look at adding photo printing to the menu. Modern dry minilabs are compact, and cost effective compared to all the old plumbing and chemical issues of the wet labs, and of course, it’s technology we understand, not some mysterious development brew. The bottom line is that if you’ve got a customer in the shop, it makes sense to serve as many of their needs as practical rather than find an alternative. The historic boundaries between photography and conventional printing have been both blurred and broken by technology and customer demand. Ironically, a cutting edge printing device which takes advantage of essentially simple optics, is finally starting to make an impact. Using an RGB light source to create an image on light sensitive paper is nothing new to the

photographer, it’s been the technology of the darkroom enlarger, and lots of hours under red lights. The Lumejet has been developed over the last couple of years in the UK, and uses the basic physics mated with modern media to produce stunning images that really are the like of conventionally printed photographic ones. Lumejet works by projecting light on to special media prepared with silver halide, to produce high-quality photographic images, using a technique that has been described as ‘inkjet with light.’ By using RGB lights rather than the standard ink CMYK gamut, the LumeJet system is able to produce a wider range of colours, with an equivalent resolution of 8,000dpi from just 400dpi exposure. It’s all about the sharpness of the image, given the ultimate limitations of prints produced by toner or ink. Although it is essentially a photographic process, its fine detail can cope equally with fine graphics and fine text, apparently down to one point size! Instead of the old enlarger lamp and lens, the Lumejet uses LEDs, and because it utilises the wider colour gamut of RGB, gives superior colour accuracy, including matching Pantones. It’s still very much work in progress as the process is certain to develop if the quality is recognised and the process accepted. At the moment, the printers, like the S200, are large, but other models are certain to appear as applications become apparent. Lumejet were at IPEX – not the Photography Show – and if you missed the machine there it may have been because it looked a little like another large digital printer array. But this is quite a different beast, and it will be worth keeping an eye on developments. Photonic printing may sound like something out of Star Trek, but it is very much here and now, although not yet the final frontier.
A SCANNER OUT OF THE BLUE Scanning has been featured quite heavily in the column in recent months for very obvious reasons. Unless you can make something digital, you can’t reproduce it. And in that case the size and shape of the original becomes an issue. Conventionally the top of the copier would be the device to do the scanning, but this limits the size of an individual scan to A3, and the surface to be fairly regular. Large scanners mostly utilise rollers to feed originals over the scanning lenses, and this still limits what can be scanned, even with the best of machines. Even large flatbeds, which are rare and expensive, have issues, like the amount of space they take up, and they still have to deal with uneven surfaces. So out of the blue comes a really neat solution to space, size and

convenience. The Fujtsu Scan Snap SV600 is such a simple answer, it’s amazing there isn’t one in every print shop. It’s a stand up, overhead scanner with lens in the head that swivel and sweep over a document up to A3 in size in three seconds, and because it doesn’t have direct contact with the original, it can cope with any uneven surface, including folded books and documents. It may not be the absolute best high resolution, but it is so flexible and fast it is definitely the trick for fast scanning of probably the majority of jobs that come in over the counter, and it compares favourably with copier based alternatives. Because it moves, you can easily scan sections of larger items and stitch them together. You can even raise the scanner slightly to capture oversize originals, although you may then get some slight optical distortion at the edges. The scanner is obviously designed to focus on exactly the manufactured height and distance from the baseboard. It’s a very simple, one touch operation that anyone can use. The trick is in the software. As it has been designed for office use it has a lot of useful time saving features which are just as handy in the bureau. It can scan PDF and JPG files directly into binders. It can not only scan the open pages of books, it can detect when a page has been turned and automatically scan anew. Alternatively you can set an interval timer. How cool is that? None of that tedious pressing the green button! But there’s more. It can spot individual items so you could scan and sort up to 10 business cards, or an assortment of notes or magazine clippings, and it will file them separately. It automatically crops, de-skews and sets the orientation of multiple sheets placed on the mat. And it also flattens and corrects the curve distortion of books and magazines. Regular readers will know I don’t put a great deal of strength in most automated systems as invariably you still need a human being to sort out the result. But the Snap Scan has won my admiration for being one of the first to truly do what it says on the tin. It’s even it’s own organiser with its functions to scan to archive files, network or cloud, as well as email or web servers. Fujitsu has definitely thought through all the possible causes of error to eliminate as many possible mistakes as possible. Anyone who deals with current technology on a regular basis will know that it’s the machine errors as much as human ones, or a combination of the two, that waste time and cost profit. The SV600 has so many useful features, we haven’t got round to using them all yet, and we grew so attached to it when Fujitsu asked for it back, we just plain refused. It’s one of those devices that once you have one, you wondered how you got by without it. And at around £500, it’s hardly an expensive outlay for the potential benefit. Two Sides initiative launched in Brazil
CREATED in the UK in 2012, Two Sides is the most important global campaign for promoting the sustainability of print and paper. Already present in major European countries in addition to the United States, Australia and South Africa, this campaign now comes to Brazil. “By joining this campaign, we take part in the most successful global initiative for promoting the sustainability of printed communications. We will work resolutely in order to show that we carry out an activity which is essential to people’s lives and to the proper functioning of society. Not to mention how important our productive chain is in the generation of jobs, incomes, technologies and other added values”, declares Fabio Arruda Mortara, President of the Brazilian Graphic Industry Association (Abigraf) and the São Paulo State Printing Industry Union (Sindigraf-SP). Organised by Sindigraf-SP, the launch was attended by the Director of Two Sides UK, Martyn Eustace. “To have Brazil join the Two Sides network is fantastic news. In 2013 alone, Brazil produced 15 million tons of pulp and 10.4 million tons of paper. It is now one of the world’s fast growing economies and with ambitious new pulp and paper projects planned and in production, Brazil is fast becoming a global leader in forest products. It’s exciting to be able to add the fantastic sustainability story of this country to the facts which Two Sides communicates about the paper and print industries worldwide” says Eustace. The signing of the Protocol of Intent took place at the FIESP (São Paulo State Industries Federation) headquarters, in São Paulo, where the protocol was also signed by 42 associations which represent the various segments of the industry. In order to engage in an illuminating dialogue with society and raise the awareness of opinion leaders, public authorities, educators, suppliers and consumers of printed products, Two Sides is preparing several actions. The first action is the publication and distribution of the booklet “Print and Paper — Myths and Facts”, with scientific contents backing up the sustainable aspect of the print industry. In May, the campaign website will be launched. Advertisements will also be launched for various audiences. “As the campaign progresses, the adverts will be customised and adjusted to the Brazilian reality”, says Mortara. Another action will the fight directed at specific public/private messages and initiatives which mistakenly associate printed communications with a lack of sustainability. For people who find it unusual that a campaign praising print will be developed on-line and broadcast on the radio and on TV, Mortara explains that there is no contradiction and that aggressive competition between printed and electronic communication must be fought against. “The growing number of media channels favours the propagation of knowledge and information for all and the more the population becomes educated, the more the people will access the Internet and consume newspapers, magazines and books. In this changing media landscape, print will not be annihilated by electronic media, rather it will remain, we believe, a vital and preferred means of communication”, advocates the President of ABIGRAF. This is backed up by Pesquisa Brasileira de Mídia 2014, a survey released in February by the Federal Government’s Social Communication Department, which shows that the use of newspapers, magazines and the Internet — all three of them! — increases in accordance with the income and education level. “Two Sides reinforces the notion that the printed media is and will continue to be attractive, practical and sustainable, in addition to being supremely reliable. www.twosides.info

Cyclus campaign winners ARJOWIGGINS Graphic awarded 2,500kg of recycled paper to five of the UK winners as part of a campaign to help secure clean drinking water in Africa Arjowiggins Graphic has revealed the five UK winners of the latest Cyclus campaign, which encouraged people to share their environmental attitudes on recycled paper and donate the winning paper to a charity of their choice. The five winners are Calverts, Friends of Meonstoke School, Jubilee Sailing Trust, University College London and YMCA Fairthorne Manor. These organisations and schools submitted the five most creative environmental attitudes, which were uploaded onto a designated Facebook group, and have each been awarded 500kg of Cyclus 100% recycled paper. All of this is part of the campaign, which supported the provision of clean drinking water for 3,000 people in the village of Dafra, Burkina Faso, Africa in partnership with SOS Children’s Villages, France. Facebook users were encouraged to share their thoughts and feelings to illustrate that attitudes can play a central role in supporting the environment. The campaign was supported by Antalis, a distributor for Cyclus in the UK, with the winners being chosen by SOS Children’s Villages, France. Angela De Vorchik, Operational Marketing Manager, Arjowiggins Graphic, “We wanted to show that environmental attitudes can really make a difference in the world and were impressed by all the entries we received. The originality in some of the ideas was inspiring. We’re pleased we could help these organisations in their charitable efforts through donating the Cyclus paper, but also showcase the need for people to use paper that demonstrates the right attitude to the environment.” One of the five winners was Calverts, a cooperative and a social enterprise printing company, which donated the half a tonne of Cyclus paper it won to Children Poverty Action Group (CPAG). Calverts’ winning ‘attitude’ was a poster, which aims to highlight the fact that electronic communications do in fact have an impact on the environment. CPAG, which has worked closely with Calverts for several decades, used the donated paper to produce both the March issue of its Welfare Rights Bulletin, an update for people working in welfare, and its Poverty magazine. The Welfare Rights Bulletin used a mixture of 90gsm/170gsm Cyclus Print and Poverty magazine used 115gsm/140gsm Cyclus Offset. Sion Whellens, Client Services Director, Calverts commented: “Thinking of how we would use half a tonne of Cyclus paper to best effect, we thought of one campaign in particular - one we’ve worked with for more than 35 years. We know that Welfare Rights Bulletin and Poverty magazine, which CPAG publish quarterly and three times a year respectively, are a vital part of their fundraising efforts, keeping supporters and welfare workers up-to-date with analysis and news. We wanted to do something that could help keep costs down, and saw this as a great way to celebrate our long relationship with the charity.” Alison Key, Senior Editor, CPAG, added: “In addition to the cost saving benefits in being given this paper, we’re proud that we’re able to publish our magazine and bulletin on recycled paper without sacrificing either print quality or our environmental commitments.” www.arjowigginsgraphic.com

Readers Research Request YOU are all cordially invited to share in some QPP new profit centre research. In the last 15 years you have shared pioneering new print products and processes including LFP, giclee fine art, POD, BOD and much more… Today’s opportunities in print are as vast as ever and although our big litho brothers are now selling on our turf, we frontline printers are selling direct into old litho territory. We don’t need to compete by purchasing everything we fall in love with as we have a growing partner list of trade printers wishing to sell their dedicated products through our 6600+ outlets. Becoming a reseller is usually a simple process and with plain packaging direct delivery our end users will be none the wiser. Promoting local print is very much in fashion as it fits so well with our customers published CSR statements and of course we are much more accountable than a nationwide website. Trade print is so good for us as the suppliers will offer great pricing for print ready artwork files that have been checked pre-flight to avoid congestion in print production. We are well worth our trade discounts, as we know how much fun and time consuming end users can be! Pick a trade partner that specialises in certain products that will compliment your inhouse services. Invest in a print run promoting these products and distribute, yes leaflet drop if you like, far easier than the gym for a bit of local exercise. Some for instance will win on price, quality and turn round as they only produce one product, in one size on one type of stock. Postcards and matt lamination business cards are a good example of this dedication paying off and more recently new products have popped up as banners, yearbooks, VDP and other acronyms that need looking into. Over the coming months these pages will be covering everything from feature walls with wallpaper to 3D prototype modelling. Some opportunities have an immediate demand that can finish overnight, so fill your boots with World Cup fever now. Pub advertising, supporters t-shirts are a good place to kick off. Thanks to Vivid for your support and inspiration by supplying us all with a world cup chart in the centre pages of this issue. We love you Vivid we do, we love you Vivid we do… Check out www.PrintGateway.co.uk/qpp to register your interest in making money from selling the sort of print you don’t want to produce on demand. Don’t moan about website resellers when you can compete by partnering up with a Print Gateway reseller platform. Don’t miss the train! Now stand up anyone already getting to grips with 3D printing?
WHETHER it is prototypes or jigs, if you are pioneering print from .sdl files we need to speak with you please. If your customer base includes mechanical designers or manufacturing of just about anything 3D printing will already be making inroads. Better still customers you are not presently printing for can be targeted on a new level. All you ‘colour copy’ investors from the eighties will know how much other print is attracted when promoting new possibilities. If you are ahead of the game and can save others a few pitfalls then please help steer the rest of us in the right direction. If your supplier is great, or chosen manufacturer sound, then imagine how pleased they will be getting some QPP referrals? We will be collating your experiencing here on these pages to share best practice and then layer-by-layer we can start building a new nationwide print service. Just imagine sending your customers some new dentures by email to the nearest print shop to bite into a bit of extra profit. As we look to a new dimension a more traditional product requires a deeper study. For years we have tried to produce near photographic quality prints, to varying degrees of success. The depth of image has proved difficult by printing on flat paper. Well the latest development is startling not only in quality but also in price. Our very own Martin Christie is researching the new trade service and reseller opportunity brought to us all from Sense Creative and is arranging for samples to be sent to all of our print businesses to sell from. If you can’t wait and want to develop a new quality print service to complement your other processes please contact: Tim Thompson, files@sensecreative.co.uk The Sense Creative Lumejet S200 photonic print service will also help set up a new lucrative magnetic sign division for you. Again, sample from Tim. We are starting with road signs and print stickers to promote our own STP, specially treated print. As we go to print our roving reporters are travelling up to our second city to take in the Sign&Digital show. Looking for large format profit and garment printing will be top of the list with visits to the Magic Touch “now printing in white”, new products and Epson DTG opportunities. Watch this space for the full report and please pool your knowledge if you have already taken the plunge.

Paper Round case study WE are still actively researching the local paper delivery service. The economies of scale will prove we can buy and distribute a multi use copier, print and fax paper to our local customers by hand. Saving money and the environment, now that will be worth spreading. Other work in progress includes finding a supplier for scratch cards for our own print shop promotion. Giving a winning voucher to our customers will promote referrals and some of our customer’s services too. If you have ever produced one for your business please let me have a look at your design and
trade supplier. Thanks. OK your homework task is nearly all set, just laser paper cutting and print and cut labels to carry forward, again! When you have weighed up your next investment and secured the suppliers best discount, take a minute to consider an independent finance comparison. Quotes are difficult to weigh up when terms may vary, end of lease commitments and equipment title will also need to be considered. We are working towards a QPP recommendation to compare supplier sources finance with your own. Your news on settlement figures, trade-in values and fixed rentals will all help shape our requirements. Together we deserve a very special group offer, not only on rate but also on our future and ever changing requirements. Is it really already May? Must get on with the June issue, with your help of course we can make these pages more profitable for all of us. Suppliers: If you have a story to tell or offer to share please drop me an email: editori@quickprintpro.co.uk. Thank you, Peter.

SPEAK UP A pony was giving a speech in a lecture hall. A man in the back told him to speak up because he couldn’t hear. The pony replied: “You’ll have to excuse me, I’m a little horse”.
THINK ABOUT THIS ONE A cannibal entered the meat market to buy something nice for dinner. The owner greeted him and told him to look around. The cannibal began to inspect the meat case and noticed the market specialised in brain. Upon further inspection he noticed a marked disparity between the costs of brain meats. A carpenter’s brain sells for £1.50 per pound. A plumber’s brain sells for £2.25 per pound. He noticed with alarm that a copier salesman’s brain sells for £375 a pound. With not a little curiosity he asked the owner why the huge difference in price between the similar meats. The owner responded with a deadpan look on his face, “Do you realise how many copier salesmen it takes to get a pound of brains?”
BRILLIANT DEDUCTION Sherlock Holmes turned to Dr Watson and announced: “The murderer lives in the house with the yellow door.” “Good grief, Holmes,” said Watson. “How on earth did you deduce that?” “It’s a lemon entry, my dear Watson.”
WAITING FOR FISH Fisherman: ‘Hey, pal! You’ve been standing there watching me fish for three hours! Why don’t you get a rod and reel and do some fishing yourself?’ Onlooker: ‘No, thanks. I don’t have the patience for it.’
DOCTORED DRINK A doctor made it his regular habit to stop off at a bar for a hazelnut daiquiri on his way home. The bartender knew of his habit, and would always have the drink waiting at precisely 5:03pm. One afternoon, as the end of the work day approached, the bartender was dismayed to find that he was out of hazelnut extract. Thinking quickly, he threw together a daiquiri made with hickory nuts and set it on the bar. The doctor came in at his regular time, took one sip of the drink and exclaimed, “This isn’t a hazelnut daiquiri.” “No, I’m sorry,” replied the Bartender, “it’s a hickory daiquiri doc.
ISLAND THRONE There was once an island kingdom whose people were all fabulously wealthy. Even though they could have afforded to live anywhere they wanted, tradition dictated they stay on their tiny island home. Eventually, their king became frustrated and called a meeting of the tribe’s elders. He said he wanted them to figure out a way he could enjoy his wealth, and stay within traditional guidelines. After much consideration, the elders suggested he build a magnificent throne. When he objected there was not enough room in his hut for a throne, the elders suggested he call in an engineer to solve the problem. Soon, the king’s tiny hut was rigged with an elaborate system of ropes and pulleys. He could lower the huge throne for use during the day, and at night, he could haul the throne up, and lower his bed. This was truly the best of both worlds for the king. Unfortunately, after a few months of constant use the ropes frayed, and one night, the throne slipped and came crashing down on the king, killing him. The wise men of the island recognised a lesson in this experience and added to the lore of their people this statement: “People who live in grass houses should not stow thrones.”
BAD EXCUSE “Do you believe in life after death?” the boss asked one of his employees. “Yes, sir,” the clerk replied. “That’s good,” the boss said. “After you left early yesterday to go to your grandmother’s funeral, she stopped in to see you.”
VERY PUNNY There was a man who entered a local newspaper’s pun contest. He sent in ten different puns, in the hope that at least one of the puns would win. Unfortunately, no pun in ten did.
CALM DOWN A guy goes to a psychiatrist. “Doc, I keep having these alternating recurring dreams. First I’m a teepee, then I’m a wigwam, then I’m a teepee, then I’m a wigwam. It’s driving me crazy. What’s wrong with me?” The doctor replies, “It’s very simple. You’re two tents.”
CHRISTMAS BREAKFAST This guy goes into a restaurant for a Christmas breakfast while in his home town for the holidays. After looking over the menu he says, “I’ll just have the eggs benedict.” His order comes a while later and it’s served on a big shiny hubcap. He asks the waiter, “What’s with the hubcap?” The waiter sings, “There’s no plate like chrome for the hollandaise.”
A NEW ECONOMY In the 1900s an English town had fallen on really hard times. For decades its primary industry had been its textile mills, but now the mills were all closed and unemployment was at an all time high. Desperate, the town’s mayor looked frantically around for other industries to bring to his town. He found that there was a man in Germany who was looking for someone to take over his thriving hunting dog breeding business. The man had made a fortune raising the animals and was now willing to unload it for a fraction of its value, so that he could retire. The mayor used his influence to have the mills converted to kennels and all of the dogs transported to his town. Employment skyrocketed and the town prospered. Everyone was happy, even though sometimes, especially on the nights with a full moon the animals got a little noisy, keeping some residents awake. But, even these unfortunate few learned to sigh and say, “The mills are alive with the hounds of Munich”.
RACING SNAIL There was this snail who wanted to be a Formula One racing driver. He went along to the track and asked if he could drive. The racing team manager said, ‘Yes, but you can’t have a number on your car, you can only have an ‘S’ because you are a snail.’ The Snail was OK about this is so he entered the race. The race started and the snail’s car was at the back... but suddenly he sped to the front, overtaking all the cars and won!! As the spectators saw the Snail speed past them, they yelled ‘WOW! LOOK AT THAT ‘S’ CAR GO!!’
THE STRING These three strings are walking along, dying of thirst in the middle of Death Valley. After a long, long trek. They come to a bar. “Boy, this is just in time...I can’t go any farther.” So he walks into the bar and orders a drink. “Can’t you read the sign there? We don’t serve no strings here” bellows the bartender. “But I’m going to die of thirst” protests the string. With that the bartender picks him up, and throws him out into the street. One of his buddies says “I’ll disguise myself as a rope and go in to get us a drink.” So, in he goes. “Hey, I thought I told your friend that we don’t serve your kind here. Now get out that door before I stomp on you!” So he quickly retreats out the door. Finally the last string says “Hey, I’ve got an idea... I’ll tie myself up like a pretzel, and frizzle out my ends, so he won’t recognise me.” So he goes into the bar. He gets up to the bar and orders a drink. The bartender eyes him a little suspiciously. “Hey, aren’t you one of those strings I told to get out of here?” To which the string answered “No, I’m a frayed knot.”
IS IT RAIN? There was a Russian man named Rudolph, a high ranking member of the KGB. One evening Rudolph and his wife, were walking along, and it began to snow. “My, my, look at the lovely snow,” said his wife. “No, that is not snow, that is rain!” replied Rudolph. “No, no, no, this is snow,” she said. “Look, there is a palace guard, we will ask him.” Rudolph went to the palace guard and said, “is it raining or snowing?” The guard was no dummy, so he said “what do YOU think it is doing, Rudolph?” Rudolph replied, “raining.” The guard said “yes comrade, I was going to say raining, also!” So Rudolph and his wife went walking off. The guard could just barely hear the KGB official say: “Rudolph, the Red, knows rain, dear.”

TOO CLEVER FOR WORDS An Indian chief had three wives, each of whom was pregnant. The first gave birth to a boy. The chief was so elated he built her a teepee made of deer hide. A few days later, the second gave birth, also to a boy. The chief was very happy. He built her a teepee made of antelope hide. The third wife gave birth a few days later, but the chief kept the details a secret. He built this one a two story teepee, made out of a hippopotamus hide. The chief then challenged the tribe to guess what had occurred. Many tried, unsuccessfully. Finally, one young brave declared that the third wife had given birth to twin boys. “Correct,” said the chief. “How did you figure it out?” The warrior answered, “It’s elementary. The value of the squaw of the hippopotamus is equal to the sons of the squaws of the other two hides.

QUICK SPRINT PRO Two guys are hiking in the forest when they suddenly come across a big Grizzly bear! The one guy takes off his hiking boots and puts on some running shoes! His friend says to him “You’re crazy! There’s no use, do you know how fast Grizzlies are, you’ll never be able to out run it!” and the guy says, “I only have to out run you!”
“I must have taken Leif off my census.”
