FA Cup Comes to Premier THROUGHOUT the last six months, Premier’s staff and customers have enjoyed the ‘beautiful game’, through Premier’s charity work and with a little help from the FA. Each year Premier work closely with a number of charities and organisations and is proud to support Breast Cancer Care. Founded in 1973 by Betty Westgate, Breast Cancer Care is the only UK wide charity that provides information, care and support to people affected by breast cancer. For a number of years now, the Premier Paper Group has supported Breast Cancer Care, donating money, time and resource to help the charity in providing its excellent service and in the organisation of its successful charity events. It is through their ongoing support of Breast Cancer Care that Premier Paper, the UK’s independent paper merchant, were able to offer something special to their customers. Another of Breast Cancer Care’s sponsors is the Football Association (FA) and Premier invited one of their customer’s to Wembley, to watch England take on France from the royal box. Premier’s customer enjoyed some amazing hospitality whilst getting to see the Three Lions win the match by two goals to nil. Then on to November last year, it was back to Wembley as 22 of Premier’s staff and customers took part in an 11 v 11 on the hallowed turf itself. The Essential Blues lined up against the Navigator Whites, to take part in a game of mixed abilities and fitness levels under the watchful eye and whistle of non other than professional referee Dermot Gallagher. The teams were well balanced and the match finished 2-3 to the Navigator Whites. A good day was had by all, especially
as playing football at Wembley has long been a childhood dream of many of those who were in attendance. Professional photographer, David Peters, was on hand to capture all of the match’s shots, passes and tackles; a commemorative photo book of the day was presented to each of Premier’s guests. Earlier this year Premier took two of their customers to St George’s Park, the Football Association’s national football centre, a 330-acre site in Burton-upon-Trent in Staffordshire. Premier’s customers watched the England squad train ahead of their friendly with Germany in Berlin later on in the week. They got to meet with England manager Roy Hodgson as well as various players from the England camp including James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Jamie Vardy who went on to score England’s equaliser in the 74th minute before Eric Dier went on to net the winning goal. Later that same week, the official FA Cup made a special guest appearance at Premier’s head office in Minworth. Staff and customers from across the country were invited to the branch to lift the trophy and have their picture taken with it by a professional photographer. Premier’s guests
enjoyed food and refreshments as well as guided tours of Premier’s Minworth central distribution centre. Speaking of the Premier’s support of Breast Cancer Care, Dave Jones Premier’s Group Marketing Director said “The work that we do with various organisations that we support is very much part of our company culture and values. Breast Cancer Care play an important part in so many people’s lives and we are pleased to be able to offer some much needed support to their efforts.” Jones went on to say, “It has been a pleasure and a privilege to be able to invite customers to these events. They allow for our staff to build and maintain their relationships with our customers whilst together, enjoying a once in a lifetime experience that provides stories to share with children and grandchildren as well as bragging rights with their friends and colleagues; after all how many people can say that they have played football at Wembley and held the FA Cup aloft? (Albeit under the watchful gaze of two very serious security guards).” www.paper.co.uk

Morgana Announces Upgrade for DigiBook 150 MORGANA Systems Ltd manufacturer of equipment for digital finishing, has announced that among the many post-press products on show on its drupa stand this year will be a series of enhancements to its popular Morgana DigiBook 150 entry level PUR perfect Binder. The DigiBook 150 has been upgraded to incorporate some of the features of the higher specification DigiBook 200 model. Key additions to the machine include automatic book block clamping and a new glue nozzle system, which has been upgraded to give better
control of the spine and side glue application. Commenting on the enhancements, Ray Hillhouse, VP of Sales said: “There
is great demand for the entry level machine both in the UK and in many of our export markets, however, it needed some productivity enhancements and a new user interface to bring it in line with the others models in the range, and to take advantage of the latest changes in PUR glue.” Hillhouse continued: “This is the first of many upgrades to the DigiBook range which will be shown at drupa. With the DigiBook 150 costing around £20,000 it makes PUR perfect binding a cost effective option for even the smallest printers.” Morgana offer a wide range of
perfect binding equipment. The binding technique known as perfect binding is used to create books with a similar appearance to that of a paper backed book. With PUR the book blocks are milled on the spine to enable the paper to absorb the adhesive. The books are trimmed on three sides to produce a professional finished result. The Morgana DigiBook 150 is an entry level PUR binder and is ideally suited to traditional and digital printers who require short runs of PUR perfect bound books to a professional standard. www.morgana.co.uk

Duplo Time-Critical Quality to Just Digital FAST-EXPANDING Just Digital Ltd, the timecritical marketing services and print specialist, has invested in new finishing systems from Duplo in the wake of a move to new purpose-built, modern premises in Huntingdon. The new equipment – including five Duplo 5000 PRO bookletmaking systems – all with automated stacking modules and two with cover feeders, creating stitched booklets, a KB-4000 binder and an Ideal guillotine – is central to the development for Just Digital Ltd, which includes Mercedes-Benz, the NHS and Anglian Water among blue-chip clients. The company, which has moved from 6,000 to 43,000 sq ft offices and production facilities, needed Duplo’s finishing systems to be more costeffective and improve automation to get rid of bottlenecks as volumes increased. Now one of Europe’s biggest single users of Duplo systems, let alone in the UK, Just Digital is already reaping the benefits. Just Digital has opened up new marketing opportunities, as well as a massive step forward with automation, particularly now it takes only a matter of seconds to move from one job to another no matter how sophisticated the products.
The 5000s provide variable data finishing for true added value production. Just Digital Managing Director Adam Hill said: “Ensuring continuous, excellent quality production of time-critical materials in a short time-frame is everything to our business. Duplo has given us that, as well as outstanding back-up. Customer service is an easy thing to say, but not so easy to deliver – Duplo makes it happen and provides real customer engagement.” He added: “Our staff have really taken to the Duplo systems because they produce fantastic quality products, as well as being so simple to use and are fully automated.” Further developments in customer engagement
schemes, enhanced training and servicing, as well as wider industry-support initiatives are all part of the continuing growth strategy for Duplo, the print finishing pioneer. Peter Jolly, Duplo UK Managing Director, said: “Just Digital is another prime example of a company seeing the benefits of our fully automated, precision systems that are at the heart of our business. We continue to work with our customers through specific engagement initiatives and are making further investments in servicing and training, as well as wider initiatives for the future prosperity of our industry.” www.duplouk.com
Vivid’s Easymount Air Laminator wins award VIVID Laminating Technologies’ new Easymount Air Wide Format Laminator has won a Top Product Award in the United States. The Wide-Format & Signage 2016 Readers’ Choice Top Product Awards have been announcedwith Vivid’s new system taking the top award in the Finishing: Laminating Equipment category. “We’re very proud to win a second award for our laminating systems in the U.S.,” said export manager Bruce Cozens. “We were presented Top Product for our Matrix OPP Laminating Systems. For the Easymount Air to now also be recognised as a Top Product is a great achievement. Two awards in just six months is incredible.” A revolution in the wide format lamination and mounting market, the Easymount Air’s patented technology uses one of the most advanced concepts ever seen in a wide format laminator. The laminating rollers are controlled by pneumatic air pressure, allowing wide format printers and sign makers to mount and laminate with
remarkable precision. Pneumatic air allows the rollers to adjust to the exact thickness and pressure required, giving faster production times. “We’ve smashed the competition because of the ground-breaking technology within the Easymount Air,” added Mr Cozens “The top roller ‘floats’ down, which means that foam and fluted boards aren’t crushed. When the rollers achieve the correct substrate thickness, they can be locked in place to keep the required gap, making board feeding faster and more accurate”. The award will be officially presented to Kevin Grabiec of Rock Hill Distribution, Vivid’s Exclusive Distribution Partner for the Easymount in the U.S., at April’s ISA International Sign Expo in Orlando. Vivid will be showcasing the Easymount Air on Stand G42 at Sign & Digital UK in April and at drupa 2016 in May & June. www.vivid-online.com

Resellers wanted for exhibition and display graphics system EXHIBITION and display graphics system manufacturer, Tecna Display Limited, has called for trade customers to apply to become authorised resellers of their new T3 Affinity display system. Tecna Display Limited, with manufacturing facilities in North London, is known throughout the world for their famous T3 “twist-lock” cube connector and aluminium extrusions, enabling thousands of customers to build re-usable and re-configurable display graphics for hundreds of applications. A window of opportunity now opens to companies in the retail, exhibition, sign-making, trade printing and exhibition graphics industries to become authorised resellers of their brand-new T3 Affinity system. The new T3 Affinity system enables the building of a whole host of structural systems for hanging/ displaying graphics and products using T3 Affinity beams and posts including; Walling; Retail displays; Interactive retail points; Pop-up Shops; Perimeter Signage; Information
points; Walk-in booths; Shell schemes; Room dividers; Shelving systems and more. The Affinity system has a range of shelving and garment display options, making it perfect for retail environments. T3 Affinity has a 90 degree connector so right-angled structures including plinths, towers, stands and stand-alone units can be built rather than just flat walls, making it an extremely flexible, dynamic and profitable system. Managing director Jonathan Evitt explains the theory behind the new Affinity system, “When I developed the original idea for T3, and the ‘twist, lock’ connector, we always intended it to be a medium from which trade printers could hang and display wide format graphics. T3 Affinity offers just that but also the option of easily fitting shelving, monitors and product/ clothes displays. It has standard sizes so trade resellers will find it extremely easy to design, measure, print and install graphics, plus create displays for products. In fact, T3 Affinity is so easy
to use, end customers will be able to install simple designs and change graphics and product displays with ease.” Tecna Display Limited invite all companies interested in joining the new T3 Affinity Global Partner Programme to first register their interest by emailing sales@t3affinity.com, by calling Tecna Display on 020 8803 4469 or visiting them on stand H66 at Sign & Digital UK. Print the Future with Xeikon at drupa 2016 IN its first major show since it was acquired by Flint Group, Xeikon has a number of headliners prepared for drupa 2016. These include its brandnew Trillium One press based on the technology demonstration of Trillium at drupa 2012 and Fusion, the next big thing in packaging and labels. “Our drupa theme is Direct. Dedicated. Digital.” says Danny Mertens, Xeikon Corporate Communications Manager, “and visitors to our stand will see that in action, with innovations across the board. This includes workflow efficiencies with our digital front end, the print engines themselves, our unique consumables and our next-generation approach to finishing. Our stand at drupa will have something for everyone in the printing industry, and visitors are guaranteed to go away with new ideas about how they can expand their capabilities to drive profitability.”
operation of all embellishment modules without any manual intervention. Potential modules include hot/cold foiling; screen prints; matte, gloss and structured flood and spot varnish; and digital Braille.
TRILLIUM ONE: THE MISSING LINK Since the announcement of its breakthrough Trillium liquid toner technology at drupa 2012, Xeikon has been working to commercialise the first digital press using Trillium technology and will present the brand-new Trillium One four-colour press at drupa 2016. Capable of running at 60 metres (200 feet) per minute at 1200 dpi, with a print width of 500 mm (19.7 inches), it combines cost-effectiveness, high quality and speed for the ultimate in digital printing performance. Trillium One is the missing link in the industry for high volume direct marketing materials and publishing such as catalogues. Many of these applications will also be demonstrated during the show. drupa visitors wishing to more deeply explore Trillium technology, can enjoy a Trillium Virtual Reality Experience and take a peek inside the press to better understand its unique characteristics. “This is a very cool way for people to get a good look inside the workings of the press,” Mertens adds, “and really gain a good understanding of its unique contribution to the industry.” A Trillium theatre on the stand will also stage five live daily demos.
A LIQUID TONNIK Xeikon will also present its unrivalled toner capabilities as part of production areas focused on labels, folding cartons and document and commercial printing. This includes its owndeveloped Tonnik, a liquid toner developed for Trillium One, that combines all the advantages of dry toner in a liquid format. Tonnik has a lot of potential for future developments, it will become the most sustainable, environmentally friendly and economical colorant for the digital printing industry.
INLINE FINISHING FOR LABELS For labels, the Xeikon CX3, which has seen more than 20 systems installed since its September 2015 launch, will be producing a broad array of applications with inline finishing. Its top speed of 30 m/min (98 ft/min) ensures it is the most productive five-colour digital label press in its class.
GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES IN THE DOCUMENT MARKET Xeikon’s technology is steeped in innovation for the document market; and at drupa, the Xeikon 9800 will represent the latest developments. It can print on a wide range of untreated substrates ranging from 40gsm to 350gsm at a resolution of 1200x3600 with variable dot density for unmatched quality. New ImagePerfect materials for interior decor SPANDEX has expanded its family of ImagePerfect materials with the launch of two new products aimed at the interior decor marketplace. Both enhance the existing range of ImagePerfect products and offer exceptional time and cost savings to end users, making them perfect for the busy interior designer. The ImagePerfect 2420 ETU (Easy to Use) Wallpaper is a washable, nonwoven paper with high opacity and a smooth surface, ideal for many different wall decoration applications in sectors such as retail, education, leisure, office and event. It has been designed with an inherent wateractivated paste that enables it to be quickly and easily hung, reducing costs and eliminating challenges associated with the more traditional method of applying wallpaper with paste. Once activated, the pre-coated paper allows the installer to easily position it on the substrate, but when dry it develops a solid bond that has the same performance levels as a conventional paper and paste system. As is typical of the Spandex IP wallpapers, it has a higher level of dimensional stability than would normally be found in other printable wallpapers on the market, and provides exceptional print quality and text definition over a large colour gamut. Unlike other options that must be applied with an overlap to compensate for any shrinkage or pull back that can happen once the paper has been applied to the substrate, IP 2420 ETU Wallpaper can be applied with the panels side-by-side. Its dimensional stability ensures that there is no subsequent movement. Able to be used on a wide variety of substrates including painted or plastered walls, the product simply needs to be dipped in a tray of water before being applied direct in a fast, easy and clean process. This also enables a huge time saving — in the region of 50% — for the installer. ImagePerfect 2557 Clear Graphics is another highly versatile product, perfect for branding and advertising opportunities as well as privacy screening. The whole look of a room can be quickly and simply transformed by enhancing a glazed area (window, glass panel or mirror) with this printable, highly transparent film, making it ideal for use in the retail, office, leisure and event sectors, as well as in the automotive industry. IP 2557 enables vibrant images to be printed over a large colour gamut ensuring a colourful end result, taking into account that any unprinted areas on the product will allow for a clear view, removing the need for cutting complex shapes. Both decorative and functional special effects such as frosting can also be created with white and silver inks and one way vision is also possible. The product is supported on a polyester liner that helps prevent static discharge and enhances the clarity of the material in application. Suitable
for use both indoors and outdoors, IP 2557 is manufactured from PVC and has the added advantage of durability and flexibility over its PET counterparts. This makes it ideal for longer lasting applications (up to eight years if applied on standard window substrates) and for use on both flat and curved surfaces. The images produced are also much more vibrant because of the ink load it can maintain. Both IP 2420 and IP 2557 have been specially designed for digital printing on large format inkjet printers and can be used with eco solvent and solvent inks as well as UV cured and latex inks. The products can be found in Spandex’s new and comprehensive Signage and Digital Product Guide, which can be requested via the website. www.spandex.com
PANTONE develops 112 new graphics colours PANTONE, the global authority on colour and provider of professional colour standards for the design industries, has launched 112 new PANTONE colours to offer the most comprehensive palette for the design community. The addition brings the total colour count of the graphic design PANTONE PLUS SERIES to 1,867 colours. Leveraging international trend-spotting intelligence from the PANTONE Colour Institute, the new palette incorporates key design trends across industries, but also serves as an important signifier of new cultural and social influences on the overall movement of colour. “Colour is a visual cue that draws us to establish a connection with our environment and the things we love,” said, Kathryn Shah, VP of Marketing at PANTONE. “Digital tools have become a prominent part of everyday life, causing a societal shift in the way we communicate. Colour breaks through the noise, commanding our attention, conveying a
mood or style, and enabling expression of unique identities for individuals and brands alike. That’s what this palette and our new campaign are about – exploring creative expression through endless colour.” During product development, PANTONE surveyed hundreds of designers across graphics, packaging,
print and web design. The findings indicated a desire for more blushes, blues and neutrals. The use of neutrals, blushes and nuanced blues in branding and packaging design are representative of the simplified design aesthetic that has been building since white became an iconic symbol of functionality and clean design. In addition, the deepening of red, orange and brown shades reflect a shift toward earth-driven and organic lifestyles, while also conveying the new luxury of living well. As individuals feel less inhibited by their colour choices, bright and bold shades encourage designers to explore, imagine and be playful. The result is a comprehensive and powerful colour palette that will look and feel familiar, but also fresh, engaging and exciting. The PANTONE range is available to purchase from Color Confidence. Watkiss new booklet maker WATKISS Automation, the UK finishing equipment manufacturer, has added the new PowerSquare 160 booklet maker to its range. Aimed at mid-volume digital printers, it meets the need for productive high quality booklet production. It will be exhibited at drupa 2016 on the Watkiss stand (Hall 6 C41). The PowerSquare 160 is an open-architecture, complete booklet making system that staples, folds, forms and trims in a single pass to produce added value SquareBack books. It builds on the established PowerSquare brand and uses Watkiss’ patented fold-and-form technology to produce the square spine at the same time as folding – which results in a sharper, better quality finish. According to Watkiss sales director Paul Attew “There are numerous advantages to the way that we make booklets, and with the PowerSquare 160 we can
make this technology accessible for lower volume customers.” Featuring JDF/JMF compatibility, the PowerSquare 160 will be available as an inline, nearline or offline solution. The modular system can include two suction-fed sheet feeders and, in inline configurations, features dual-mode functionality for flexible workflows. The PowerSquare 160 includes a face trimmer as standard, with optional full bleed trimming for colour booklets. By trimming the book as the final process, Watkiss claims to produce a neater and more accurate result than the more common pre-slitting. “The PowerSquare 160 complements our existing range.” explains Attew “While the PowerSquare 224 may be the best solution for high volume production booklet making, we recognise that it
is a bit more than some customers need. It was natural to develop the PowerSquare 160 as a sister product that utilises the same technology, but which is more suited to mid-volume applications.” www.watkiss.com

Making sense of sensors
All revolutions challenge established wisdom and practice. Social and political ones do so with dramatic and often disastrous consequences. Technical and industrial revolutions are more often tempered by the limitations of production and practicality. Martin Christie says what may be possible in theory may not be actually practical, at least in the short term, till other factors have been adjusted.
A
SIMPLE EXAMPLE of this is the way the absolute potential of a modern mobile phone has way outstripped the capacity of battery technology to serve it. Until the storage of energy has been improved, even the most sophisticated device will be unable to stray far from its electric umbilical cord. The digital revolution has of course made profound changes to our work and social lives, and many things that are now accepted as normal would have been science fiction a mere decade ago. But the revolution is not a seamless progress and there are places where it stumbles, and where it is worth taking stock of the current status quo. The much quoted Moore’s Law, about the doubling of processing power every two years, has been fairly consistent in the five decades since it was predicted, but there has to be a point of overload where all of that potential hits a virtual digital glass ceiling. Certainly it seems to have done that in photography, at least for the time being, and the megapixel escalator seems to have stalled. The first digital cameras were 1.2 or 2 megapixel, then there was six, then twelve. But if you follow the mathematics of Moore’s Law we should now be drooling over 256mp DSLRs on the shelves. And yet, as I reported last month, at the recent Photography Show, most of the excitement was over new models
in the 20-24mp range. So why is that? Part of the confusion is caused by rating the cameras in megapixels, which seemed logical at the start, but has become increasingly deceptive. Quantity alone is not the same as quality, or performance. It’s like rating cars on the cubic capacity of their engines alone, not the power output, or other factors. The two may be related, but not entirely relevant. There are now phones that boast massive megapixel cameras, but there is no comparison between the inferior optics of a tiny, simple lens, and the many times larger, multi-facetted one on the working end of a DSLR, which benefits from years of development in the capture of light back to the days of film. That’s before you begin to take account of the size of sensor that light is reaching, and then the performance of the processor that will interpret it. I’m using the DSLR format, the digital equivalent of what used to be referred to as 35mm in film days, as an example here as it is the most popular for professional and competent amateur use, but this also includes many of those that look very similar and are called bridge cameras, which have similar performance, but do not have interchangeable lenses. There are some seriously professional cameras called medium format, like the legendary
Hasselblad which have a much larger sensor, and therefore a higher pixel count, but also come with a much bigger price tag, so I am not confusing the issue with introducing you to this exclusive club. It is those cameras, and the digital images they produce, which are more likely to be presented at the print shop counter, which I will concentrate on. The 35mm format for film was developed because the size of the negative, actually 36x24mm, enabled a conveniently sized camera body that could house a roll of 24 or 36 individuals, rather than the larger medium format that had limited shots, even if they were better quality. Digital cameras started to mimic 35mm in shape and substance because that was the format people were familiar with. Hence the sensor at the heart of a full frame DSLR is 35.9x24mm regardless of actual pixel count. This is called FX format, but there is also a smaller version, often called crop sensor, at 15.8 x 23.6 mm, roughly equivalent to the old APS film system for those of you old enough to remember it. Called DX format, this enables a smaller camera, but may still hold a large pixel count. There is a lot of snobbery in some photography circles about the difference in quality between these two formats, and debate over whether one is a more professional tool then the other. The actual difference in performance, in the right hands, is
May 2016 | QUICK PRINT PRO | DIGITAL IMAGING | 23
quite small, certainly less than many would claim. Only in extreme low light conditions does the extra size of the FX sensor stretch its legs and pull away. But that performance advantage comes at a massive difference in price, which perhaps accounts more for the snob factor, than any real potential. Suffice it to say that many of the images shot for QPP, including the Sign and Digital spread, are done with a DX camera, even with the difficult and changing light conditions within the NEC, which on that particular day had bright sunlight coming in from skylights onto many shaded, and unevenly lit stands. Back in the day, when this magazine was called Copy Shop News, we did actually manage a front cover shot with a 3mp camera, a feature which defies any statistical formula. But if an image is sharp and well defined, it can be enlarged. If it is badly captured and poorly lit, it will still be rubbish regardless of the number of pixels. So the next time a customer tries to tell you it will be a great picture, because it was taken with a very good camera, remind them — politely — that it’s the photographer that takes the picture, not the camera. The digital smoking gun is the metadata which all digital images record in the file, containing not only date and time, but camera model, and settings used. That will reveal, not only the quality of the camera and lens, but the expertise, or lack of it, of the photographer. It is important to have this knowledge in your back pocket as more and more images coming to the print shop will be taken on a wide variety of camera devices, and the quality of those images will vary considerably, regardless of the pixel count and the actual size of file. All digital cameras, regardless of megapixel count, capture at 72ppi. It is the dimensions of the image that make the difference, whether dictated by the photographer or the automatic device selection. Because screen resolution is also 72ppi, and the screen doesn’t need any more pixel information, it’s hard to judge the potential print quality unless you can interrogate the file. Ideally to print an A4 in full colour at 300ppi you need 3566x2522 pixels. In camera terms that’s around the output of a 10-12 megapixel device. You could get away with half
vivid-online.com
In identical studio lighting conditions and using the same lens on three different cameras there is barely noticeable difference in image quality between a 12mp Nikon D300, a 24Mp D3200 and a 36mp D810.
that quantity if the original image was good, but even with all those pixels, if the image was out of focus, for example, it would still look awful. If by chance you happened to have twice the number of pixels, then you have the possibility of cropping the picture to suit wihout losing quality, which is one of the other advantages of shooting images at maximum size. The pixels contain more than the detail in the picture, they hold the colour information needed to reproduce the image accurately. Again, with insufficient pixels, you will not have enough information to make any alteration or correction. Nor will you have enough substance to perform any cloning or cleansing needed to improve the eventual print. The problem of shooting larger files is that they use more processing power, and take up more disc space, especially if lots of images are being recorded and archived. This is perhaps the main reason the megapixel escalation has momentarily stalled — the pixel potential is outstripping the capacity of the processing available. Canon actually have a 50mp already on the shelf, and did announce last year a 120mp in development, but at the moment there are no plans to introduce it. That’s because a single image it would output, in RAW unprocessed form, would be 232Mb, four times the size of those from the existing 50mp version, and ten times the size of a file from a 24mp camera. While these file sizes are manageable on their own, in any form of quantity, they put heavy demand on computing power in post processing, and manufacturers like Canon and Nikon figure — probably quite rightly — that while a photographer would love to have 120mp at his or her fingertips, they are not going to appreciate investing in a new computer, external hard drive and high speed memory cards all at the same time. I’ve already had to upgrade my laptop to cope with the stress of a 24mp camera, but then I am shooting up to 10 gigabytes at a session! I know that a professional has to keep his kit up to date, but there are practical financial constraints
between what I would like, and what clients expect to pay. So for the moment that’s my digital glass ceiling. In the days when I shot 35mm film, I only had three SLR cameras in thirty years. In a little over twelve years with digital, I am on my fourth DSLR. To be fair, the actual pixel per pound value has improved, as the latest cost about half the first did a decade ago. But the big difference is that film and processing cost the same regardless of the camera upgrade so it was possible to keep pace with your costs. Mentioning my old film cameras, I still have one and decided to pull it out of the cupboard to test a simple comparison. Many people are still in love with the look of film, and others, perhaps with rose-tinted view finders, look disparagingly on digital. In order to compare the two fairly and not in a partial judgement, you need to assess all of the factors involved: not just quality but convenience etc. It’s often considered that the comparable pixel count of a 35mm colour negative would be assessed at about 24mp, and the wisdom was that when DSLRs overtook that threshold they would replace film. They have passed that marker, but the jury is still out, because regardless of absolutely quality of output, when they do and how they do it are quite different. So here we have a contest of two Nikons — separated by thirty years of technology. In the blue corner, Nikon FM 35mm film, titanium body, totally manual operation including focusing, and a maximum 36 shots on a roll. In the red corner, Nikon D3200, 24Mp, plastic reinforced body, entirely battery powered but with multiple functions as we are manual shooting and including HD video. Maximum shots dictated by size of memory card, and file size, but approx one thousand on 32Gb card full size Raw files. On paper looks like a mis-match but how do the two shape up in action? Bet you can’t wait for next month to find out!

ENVIRONMENTALLY conscious business Premier Paper teamed up with over 30 of its customers and staff, who, together with Woodland Trust Scotland, helped to plant over 800 trees at North Wood, a woodland site just outside Livingston which is looking to increase its green space environment. The trees, each of which were about two foot tall, were planted by Premier staff and customers, having had instruction and demonstrations from the knowledgeable Woodland Trust Scotland staff. All of the trees planted were UK native species, and included a wide variety such as; silver and downy birch, elder, hazel, hawthorn and rowan. During the day, and thanks to the assistance of the Woodland Trust for Scotland, Premier’s customers also had the opportunity to enhance their tree identification skills, by taking part in a guided walk of the North Wood forest area. During the walk they were able to learn more about the site, its redevelopment, and also about the trees that they had helped to plant. Speaking about the success of the North Wood tree planting day, David Jones, Premier Paper Group Marketing Director said: “We had a great tree planting day at North Wood. Each tree was planted, staked and then fitted with a tree guard to protect it from deer and rabbits; so it was easy to see the progress that we had made. Thanks to the hard work and enthusiasm of Premier Paper customers and staff we managed to exceed Woodland Trust’s target number of trees for that day. It was really rewarding to have helped create new native woodland that will not only provide a valuable habitat for wildlife but also, in time, become beautiful woodland for the local community to enjoy.” Over the past year customers who participated and engaged in Premier’s Carbon Capture scheme have helped to plant over 55,000 trees with the Woodland Trust, all of which has helped to capture some 11,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions, which is a fantastic environmental achievement.

aim is to provide 100 bikes by the end of the campaign, which runs from 1 April to the end of May 2016. This latest Cyclus campaign will be launched in 35 countries, including France, Australia, South Africa and the UK. When visiting the dedicated website customers can also request a set of three Cyclus 100% recycled notepads, which through design showcase Cyclus’ unique look and feel. Arjowiggins Graphic is supporting the campaign with mailings, e-mailings, web banners and social media. A striking and innovative bicycle themed campaign mailer has been produced to raise awareness of the campaign. It uses Arjowiggins Graphics’ CyclusOffset 300gsm and CyclusPrint 300gsm for the wheels, which are designed to appear turning. It is 190x190mm in size and is tied together with a natural latex band. The three notepads use CyclusPrint 300gsm for the cover pages and CyclusOffset 90gsm for the internal text pages. CyclusPrint is a 100% recycled matt-coated natural white printing paper for use in both full colour and black and white printing and ideal for a variety of uses whilst Cyclus Offset is a 100% recycled uncoated natural white paper that accentuates the creative message, where touch and feel combine with and support – the visual image. Angela De Vorchik, Operational Marketing Manager at Arjowiggins Graphic UK, said: “Our partnership with the NGO ChildFund International enables us and our customers to make a genuine difference to the life of a child. Cyclus is rich in environmental and ethical principles including being manufactured to the most stringent environmental certifications therefore joining forces with ChildFund International is a natural fit. For this year’s Cyclus campaign we have chosen an impactful approach as we encourage our customers to view the insightful videos showcasing how important it is for children to have a safe passage to get to school.” Lisa Gaspar, Communication Manager of Un Enfant par la Main, a partner of ChildFund International added, “Our action towards helping children, leads us to meet passionate men and women, as well as committed companies who want to participate into building a better world. Thanks to Arjowiggins Graphics’ support, whose vision and commitment enables associations such as ours to carry out our work, 100 young girls from isolated and remote villages in India will be able to receive much needed education transport. With Arjowiggins Graphic, we share common values based on respect, listening, care and humanity”. Un Enfant par la Main is very proud to count Arjowiggins Graphic amongst its generous donors, who through its Cyclus brand will increase awareness of our cause to their customer base.” The campaign is being rolled out in the UK by Antalis a stockist of Cyclus. Mike Bennett, Marketing Manager Antalis UK comments: “We are proud that this Cyclus campaign supports children across the globe. Through this partnership approach we are able to showcase to businesses the high-end shade and finish available for their printed communication as well as the first-rate green credentials of this innovative range. When compared to the manufacture of non-recycled papers the manufacturing process reduces energy consumption, uses less water, diverts waste from landfill and the CO2 emissions are substantially lower. This environmental story helps contribute to a business’s message and has been neatly included in the campaign mailer to assist customers.” www.arjowigginsgraphic.com

Money in Green Envelopes BLAKE, the paper, envelope and postal packaging company have launched their environmental month highlighting why recycled envelopes are kinder to the environment. In an industry that makes heavy use of a natural resource like wood Blake thought it important to stimulate discussion and talk about why recycled products are good to use. A typical office worker uses up to 45 sheets of paper per day, of which over half is considered waste. 77% of wasted paper in offices is high grade and recyclable so purchasing recycled products has a direct impact on the environment. Recycled products help save energy, conserve water*, prevent environmental pollution and save landfill sites. Blake will be doing their bit on social media and via direct mail to customers to educate people about the benefits of replacing virgin paper products with recycled. Blake’s range of recycled envelopes includes the highest quality, whitest
recycled envelope in the world from the Premium Pure range. 100% recycled and FSC, Blake Premium Pure paper and envelopes are manufactured using bioenergy and without chlorine bleaching; the high whiteness (CIE 160) is achieved through a special converting process of the recycled fibre. They also supply the most environmentally friendly padded envelope on the market, the Blake Purely Packaging EcoCushion, 100% recycled and the only padded mailer with an expandable gusset. Completing their range are over 55 types of other recycled products, all of which are 100% recycled and have FSC Certification. 100% of their products - recycled or not - comply with the EU Timber Regulation (2013) that prohibits the importation and use of illegally harvested timber and timber products in EU countries and 40% of their products are FSC Certified with some products also carrying the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). * The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has found that recycling paper causes 35% less water pollution and 74% less air pollution than making virgin paper. www.blake-envelopes.com

Students share diverse range of new print products THE RA Schools Premiums Interim Projects exhibition took place for the first time in the historic Sackler Wing of Galleries at the Royal Academy. The annual show provides a unique opportunity to view exciting new work by 17 emerging and international artists at the interim point of their postgraduate study at the UK’s longest established art school, the RA Schools. Many of the works on display were produced using Epson technology and media, which are all accessible onsite to the students within the Schools’ Epson-sponsored Digital Media Suite. Providing the Schools with state of the art large format digital printing, AV projection technologies and specialist media, gives students the opportunity to experiment with a wide range of work incorporating a wide range of practices, from hand-made objects and wallpaper installations to paintings and trompe l’oeil, as well as film, woodcuts, photography, film and sound. The only free three-year postgraduate course in the UK, the RA Schools programme is tailor-made to the individual student, affording each artist the space and flexibility to develop work across a broad array of media. Epson has been an integral part of the Schools fabric for several years, offering support and guidance to the students and staff, and the freedom to experiment and engage with technologies to produce a diverse range of work. There was much evidence this year of the creative collaboration between students and Epson technologies, with all of the students having utilised the Epson Digital Media Suite at some point during their study. This was particularly evident in the works of five of the artists on show: Jack Burton works with high-gloss colour photographic prints of complex still life, often constructed from sculptural collages of found

objects, customised spaces and earlier produced photographic images, printed using an Epson large-format printer. India Mackie produces large scale video installations using Epson HD projectors to create physical 4D experiences in high resolution. Martin Gross creates prints that span centuries of print processes on their journey of production. He begins by making drawings that are scanned, these become rasterised translations that then become woodcut stencils via laser cutting equipment and digital print. These manifest as large format digital wallpaper installations that can be customised to fill and match bespoke environments and additionally they can become smaller framed-sized editions that utilise both state of the art Epson inkjet printing and traditional 18th century wood engraving. Dimitri Gallitzine produces work across a broad range of media. For Premiums, he created and projected a ‘mockumentary’ film, using an Epson HD projector, in which he documented a journey where he attempted to become a professional Elvis impersonator. Sebastian Jefford is a sculptor of idiosyncratic objects made from a combination of diverse materials that include nails, wood, plasticine, drawing and printing. The material skins which surround them are printed with screen printed
plasticine from film positives produced on a large format Epson printer. Jefford triumphs by an almost miss-use of the technologies intended functions. Mark Hampson, Head of Fine Art Processes at the RA Schools, who along with his specialist team is responsible for facilitating the students creative ambitions in the RA workshops, says of this group of students: “Our students never cease to surprise me in their creativity and the manifestations of their uses and abuses of the technology and equipment we are able to offer them at the RA Schools. They constantly surprise with their use of the available resources and the ambition with which they can apply these in their Art. This year’s Premiums are an amazing example of the strength of our collaborative project with Epson. Without Epson’s support and the sponsorship of equipment and its technical knowledge, many of these artworks would not have been conceivable. Epson offers us the means and conceptual virtuosity to think laterally about technology and the implications and effects of our digital age. They do this with wonderful generosity and complete trust, often knowing that the resulting artistic consequences may be bizarre, unexpected, uncommercial but always exciting. I cannot think of a more positive way for industry and art education to collaborate and support each other.” www.royalacademy.org.uk/page/the-ra-schools

Also engraving short run – well one off really to give more choice to our personalised products market. THE NEGATIVE DOUBLE POSITIVE An MIT linguistics professor was lecturing his class the other day. “In English,” he said, “a double negative forms a positive. However, in some languages, such as Russian, a double negative remains a negative. But there isn’t a single language, not one, in which a double positive can express a negative.” A voice from the back of the room piped up, “Yeah, right.”

DOC, I THINK I’M A TEPEE
RING OF CONFIDENCE Yesterday at a job interview I filled my glass of water until it overflowed a little. “Nervous?” asked the interviewer. I replied, “No, I always give 110%.”
SERIOUS FOUR PLAY There are two guys that are trying to get a quick 18 holes, but there are two terrible lady golfers in front of them hitting the ball everywhere but where it’s supposed to go. The first guy says: “Why don’t you go over and ask if we can play through?” The second guy gets about halfway there and comes back. The first guy asks what’s wrong? He says: “One of them is my wife, and the other one is my mistress.” The first guy says: “That could be a problem. I’ll go over.” He gets about half way there and comes back. The second guy asks what’s wrong? The first guy answers: “Small world!”

“Please,” protested the branch manager, “you already make more than the entire sales department.” “Yeah, maybe so, but you don’t know what I have to put up with,” the sales trainer blustered. “Look.” He went out into the hall and grabbed a salesman who was walking down the corridor. “Run over to my office and see if I’m there,” he ordered. Twenty minutes later the salesman returned, sweaty and out of breath. “You’re not there, sir,” he reported. “Oh, I see what you mean,” conceded the branch manager, scratching his head. “I would have phoned.”
MORE PUNS TO PONDER A friend of mine tried to annoy me with bird puns, but I soon realised that toucan play at that game. I wasn’t originally going to get a brain transplant, but then I changed my mind. I wondered why the baseball was getting bigger. Then it hit me. Did you hear about the guy whose whole left side was cut off? He’s all right now. I’d tell you a chemistry joke but I know I wouldn’t get a reaction. I’m reading a book about antigravity. It’s impossible to put down. Did you hear about the guy who got hit on the head with a can of soda? He was lucky it was a soft drink. It’s not that the man did not know how to juggle, he just didn’t have the balls to do it. I used to be a banker but I lost interest. Claustrophobic people are more productive thinking outside the box. I like European food so I decided to Russia over there because I was Hungary. After Czech’ing the menu I ordered Turkey. When I was Finnished I told the waiter ‘Spain good but there is Norway I could eat another bite’. I don’t trust these stairs because they’re always up to something. Have you ever tried to eat a clock? It’s very time consuming. He drove his expensive car into a tree and found out how the Mercedes bends. I couldn’t quite remember how to throw a boomerang, but eventually it came back to me. When William joined the army he disliked the phrase ‘fire at will’. My friend’s bakery burned down last night. Now his business is toast. The man who survived mustard gas and pepper spray is now a seasoned veteran. Police were called to a daycare where a three-year-old was resisting a rest.
Show me a piano falling down a mineshaft and I’ll show you A-flat minor. Need an ark to save two of every animal? I noah guy. The roundest knight at King Arthur’s round table was Sir Cumference. I’m glad I know sign language, it’s pretty handy. The experienced carpenter really nailed it, but the new guy screwed everything up. A new type of broom came out, it is sweeping the nation. Yesterday I accidentally swallowed some food colouring. The doctor says I’m OK, but I feel like I’ve dyed a little inside. To write with a broken pencil is pointless. A prisoner’s favorite punctuation mark is the full stop. It marks the end of his sentence. The girl quit her job at the doughnut factory because she was fed up with the hole business. I relish the fact that you’ve mustard the strength to ketchup to me. What is the difference between a nicely dressed man on a tricycle and a poorly dressed man on a bicycle? A tyre. I saw a beaver movie last night, it was the best dam movie I’ve ever seen. A bicycle can’t stand on its own because it is two-tired. A man just assaulted me with milk, cream and butter. How dairy. I once heard a joke about amnesia, but I forgot how it goes. When Peter Pan punches, they Neverland. Atheism is a non-prophet organisation. There was once a cross-eyed teacher who couldn’t control his pupils. A small boy swallowed some coins and was taken to a hospital. When his grandmother telephoned to ask how he was a nurse said ‘No change yet’. The other day I held the door open for a clown. I thought it was a nice jester. The one who invented the door knocker got a No-bell prize. The shoemaker did not deny his apprentice anything he needed. He gave his awl. There was a sign on the lawn at a drug re-hab centre that said ‘Keep off the Grass’. I used to have a fear of hurdles, but I got over it. I did a theatrical performance about puns. Really it was just a play on words. So what if I don’t know what apocalypse means!? It’s not the end of the world!

Don’t trust people that do acupuncture, they’re back stabbers. Atheists don’t solve exponential equations because they don’t believe in higher powers. The butcher backed up into the meat grinder and got a little behind in his work. It was an emotional wedding. Even the cake was in tiers. What did the grape say when it got stepped on? Nothing - but it let out a little whine. I think Santa has riverfront property in Brazil. All our presents came from Amazon this year. I was going to look for my missing watch, but I could never find the time. Always trust a glue salesman. They tend to stick to their word. When the cannibal showed up late to the luncheon, they gave him the cold shoulder. If there was someone selling drugs in this place, weed know. The first time I used an elevator it was really uplifting, then it let me down. When the window fell into the incinerator, it was a pane in the ash to retrieve. Smaller babies may be delivered by stork but the heavier ones need a crane. A hole has been found in the nudist camp wall. The police are looking into it. I knew a guy who collected candy canes, they were all in mint condition. I went to the dentist without lunch, and he gave me a plate. I used to be addicted to soap, but I’m clean now. Two hats were hanging on a hat rack in the hallway. One hat says to the other, ‘You stay here, I’ll go on a head.’. Some people’s noses and feet are built backwards: their feet smell and their noses run. If towels could tell jokes they would probably have a dry sense of humour.
Did you hear about the fight…
I was going to buy a book on phobias, but I was afraid it wouldn’t help me. What’s the definition of a will? (It’s a dead giveaway). I don’t mind kids playing hopscotch in most places, but my driveway is where I draw the line. Sleeping comes so naturally to me, I could do it with my eyes closed. I knew a woman who owned a taser, man was she stunning! When a clock is hungry it goes back four seconds. Novice pirates make terrible singers because they can’t hit the high seas. I really wanted a camouflage shirt, but I couldn’t find one. Einstein developed a theory about space, and it was about time too. Broken puppets for sale. No strings attached. How do they figure out the price of hammers? Per pound. Pencils could be made with erasers at both ends, but what would be the point? Why did the pig stop sunbathing? He was bacon in the heat. The dead batteries were given out free of charge. The magician got so mad he pulled his hare out. Two peanuts were walking in a tough neighborhood and one of them was a-salted. My tailor is happy to make a pair of pants for me, or at least sew it seams. A hungry traveller stops at a monastery and is taken to the kitchens. A brother is frying chips. ‘Are you the friar?’ he asks. ‘No. I’m the chip monk,’ he replies. Did you hear about these new reversible jackets? I’m excited to see how they turn out. John Deere’s manure spreader is the only equipment the company won’t stand behind. My fear of roses is a thorny issue. I’m not sure what it stems from, but it seems likely I’ll be stuck with it. Did you hear about the crime that happened in a parking garage? It was wrong on so many levels. My new theory on inertia doesn’t seem to be gaining momentum.
…near the chippy last night?
I was struggling to figure out how lightning works then it struck me. There was a big paddle sale at the boat store. It was quite an oar deal. I think every morning that I’m going to make pancakes, but I keep waffling. I took a picture of a field of wheat, it was grainy. If you lose your hearing, is it ear replaceable? Jill broke her finger today, but on the other hand she was completely fine. I was going to tell you a joke about infinity, but it didn’t have an ending! England doesn’t have a kidney bank, but it does have a Liverpool People are choosing cremation over traditional burial. It shows that they are thinking out of the box. Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana. I try wearing tight jeans, but I can never pull it off. I should have been sad when my flashlight batteries died, but I was delighted. They just found a sword swallower dead. The police suspect it’s an inside job.
LAST TIME THIS TRIGGERED A HUGE FIGHT… A blonde walked into an electronics store and told the salesman, “I want that TV” and she points to the display. He looks at her and tells her, “I’m sorry, I’m not allowed to sell that to blondes.” So the blonde, all ticked off, walks out of the store. An hour later, she walks back into the same store with a black wig on. She walks up to the salesman and says, “I want to buy that T.V.” and she points to the display. He looks at her and said, “I’m sorry, but I already told you we can’t sell that to blondes.” So she walks out of the store mad again without a TV A few weeks later she gets a makeover, new hair colour and everything, and she walks back into that electronics store. She walks up to the salesman and says, “I want to buy that T.V.” and points to the display. The salesman
No.
shakes his head and tells her, “I told you twice already, I can’t sell that to blondes.” The blonde looks at him and says, “How do you know that I’m a blonde?” He looks at her and states, “Because, that’s a microwave.”
EDINBURGH FRINGE “I just deleted all the German names off my phone. It’s Hans free.” Darren Walsh (/Pete Cunningham) “Kim Kardashian is saddled with a huge arse... but enough about Kanye West.” Stewart Francis “Surely every car is a people carrier?” Adam Hess “What’s the difference between a hippo and a Zippo? One is really heavy, the other is a little lighter.” Masai Graham “If I could take just one thing to a desert island I probably wouldn’t go.” Dave Green “Jesus fed 5,000 people with two fishes and a loaf of bread. That’s not a miracle. That’s tapas.” Mark Nelson “Red sky at night Sheperd’s delight. Blue sky at night. Day.” Tom Parry “The first time I met my wife I knew she was a keeper. She was wearing massive gloves.” Alun Cochrane “Clowns divorce. Custardy battle.” Simon Munnery “They’re always telling me to live my dreams. But I don’t want to be naked in an exam I haven’t revised for.” Grace The Child
PRINTERS IN GLASS HOUSES… An RGB walks into a CMYK bar Bartender says, “Hey, aren’t you out of gamut?” Printers know how to ‘do it’ between the sheets. Why did the printer forget to say goodbye to his wife? He was pressed for time. What did the typographer say to the printer who wouldn’t stop talking? “Get to the point.” How many printers does it take to screw-in a light bulb? Eight; one to hold the bulb and seven to drink until the room spins.
Well, the fish got battered!
