Have you noticed how print is getting heavier? Increasingly, the choice of paper stock is adding value and weight to our print products. Certainly nothing has to look copied anymore. Ask your paper merchant for samples to practice how you can make your customers look good on paper. Looking through the first few news pages this issue, I remembered a reaction to our launch some 21 years ago. Is this going to be just a southern magazine? Well our intention was, and still is today, to cover all things print across the whole of the UK as born out in the next few pages. Rotherham, the Isle of Man, Jersey, Edinburgh, Guildford and yes, London. When it happens in print, QPP are never geographically challenged. Stand up and be counted, wherever you are. John Brailsford installs Uchida AeroCut One John Brailsford Printers, “Yorkshire’s Favourite, Fast, Friendly Quick Printer!”, has purchased more finishing equipment from Morgana Systems in the shape of a Uchida AeroCut One multi-purpose finishing unit and a Canny Bander machine, and follow on swiftly from a Pro 450 laminating system installed in November of last year. The Rotherham and Barnsley shop fronted business has been a long time fan of the Japanese manufactured Uchida products, with the new AeroCut One replacing another similar unit that had been in use for seven years at John Brailsford Printers — that machine has now been sold to another printer to continue its productive life. Commenting on the arrival of the new machine, John Brailsford, company owner, said: “Our previous Uchida had been a great servant to the business, but this new model comes complete with a barcode reader, and that really is a game changer. We didn’t really appreciate the difference it would make until we had the machine installed for a trial period. Our Xerox print unit adds a barcode to the regular job imposition before printing, and this contains all of the job information. The AeroCut One picks up on the barcode and sets itself up for slitting, cutting and creasing as is required for the job. It’s amazing to see it in action. It’s fast, accurate and needs no operator intervention.” John says the reaction of his team has been one of delight: “We should have bought this sooner! It’s easy to use, saves time on every
job, saves any operator errors, and just moves the job speedily through production with the minimum of touch-points. “As we often do, we looked at a number of machines, and sampled some of them with inhouse trials. There was a Chinese manufactured machine that was certainly a lot cheaper than the Uchida, but it quickly became apparent to us that it was not sufficiently robust to give us good service. It might have been OK if you only whizzed two or three jobs a day through it, but we expect a machine to be capable of accurately running at top speed all day, for five days a week. I have no doubt that within and year or two we would have thrown it out and bought the Uchida anyway! “The Japanese manufactured Uchida is a quality build — just what you would expect from Japan. It’s fast, reliable and 100% accurate.” To compliment the Uchida the company has also purchased an additional banding unit: “The Canny Bander sits beside the Uchida finishing unit so that we can band the business cards and postcards prior to packaging. It helps to present a neat, finished job to our customers — and they do comment on the presentation of the work when delivered.” The AeroCut One from Uchida is a compact slitting, cutting and creasing unit. Creasing can be set at five different levels, while two single blade and two double blade slitters trim the top and bottom margins of sheets. The durable guillotine can handle stocks up to 400gsm. The patented Tri-Suction top-feed system can feed
a variety of stock including coated papers. The Flex Mode even allows users to cut multiple sizes of cards from a page and add a desired number of creases. Two perforating wheels can also be added to the system. Commenting on this latest order, Ray Hillhouse, vice-president offline business at Morgana, said: “The Uchida AeroCut One shows how automation can take a job swiftly through post-press production with the minimum of operator intervention. John Brailsford Printers illustrate perfectly how print companies can be set up to get the maximum production from staff and equipment to create a successful and profitable business.” www.BrailsfordPrinters.com www.morgana.co.uk
Words & Spaces increases workflow A Prinect Production Manager package is being installed at Isle of Man printer Words & Spaces which handles work as far afield as Hong Kong and the Caribbean and prints for household names like HSBC, Santander, Friends Provident and Axa as well as the Government and other industries including leisure and gaming. It produces a range of promotional material and business stationery. “We like the idea that the software will be constantly updated and we will not have a battle between the RIP and new developments from Adobe. Heidelberg keeps on top of that,” says Mark Green, managing director. “The greater automation will help the younger operators who don’t have as much experience as the older guys and we also like the fact that you can build up a library of jobs.” The Heidelberg package is a full workflow solution with Print Colour Management (PCM) to drive the proofers. It is the ability to
drive and manage colour directly that gives Heidelberg’s workflow a real advantage. There is Prinect Prepress Manager, Prinect Colour Proof Pro (which manages and drives the proofers), the PCM module for colour management, Prinect Portal which gives users access within the business without touching the workflow, Signastation imposition software and a new wash gum unit funded by a three year plate deal. “Now we can get jobs right first time with
automated imposition which allows for creep, automatically adjusting paper length and the centring of images for different pages of a publication. The UCR (under colour removal) also reduces ink costs by minimising the use of cyan, magenta and yellow and increasing the black,” says Mr Green. He has been especially impressed by the installation process. “Heidelberg has great attention to detail. They hold your hand like no other manufacturer. Having installed the front end and given us some initial training, they are scheduled to come back having given the operators time to test the system and to accumulate some questions. In the interim we have access to remote service support.” At present Words & Spaces is running its old and new systems concurrently but by Easter it will have fully transferred to its new and more automated system. www.wordsandspaces.im Mark Green, Words & Spaces 01624-662573.

Guildford Gem celebrates Ruby Anniversary Guildford based company Stag Print is celebrating 40 years in business. The family owned company has been providing premium printing services to its customers for four decades. Everything from award winning printed boxes to invitations for events at royal palaces. Founded in 1979 by Rajendra Patel who studied print, Stag Print has always had its roots in the south east moving from Twickenham to Guildford in 2008. Rajendra’s son Sushil Patel then joined the business in 2013 following a successful strategy and transformation career in London. Using his knowledge and experience, Sushil has implemented new ideas and equipment into the business. Most recently, introducing a state of the art print machine with LED-UV drying capabilities, which produces very high quality print that dries instantly leading to much faster turnaround times. Sushil Patel, Managing Director, Stag Print, said: — “We are all immensely proud of what the business has achieved over the past 40 years; it is a testament to Stag Print’s resilience and that of our customers as the economy booms and busts, and challenges such as Brexit bring uncertainty.
Roll call: (from left) founder Rajendra Patel, managing director Sushil Patel, print production manager Richard Andrews
“Investing in new state of the art equipment such as our LED-UV litho press has helped, along with attention to detail in all that we do. Customer care and quality is the backbone of the business, which is why I am personally involved in the quality control process and follow up with customers to make sure they are happy too.”
Mailmate Print Invest In Horizon SPF-200L
Mailmate Print has completed a company wide spend, that began with a Sakurai 466 LED UV press, with investment in a highly automated Horizon SPF-200L booklet maker and a VAC-1000 tower collator from IFS. Founded in 1991, the Jersey operation was the first printer in the Channel Islands to invest in LED UV to complement its litho and digital capabilities. The addition of the new press prompted a broad review that included enhancing the bindery with the booklet maker. In recent years the commercial business has also expanded its service offering with banners, vehicle graphics and clothing. Neil Faudemer, Managing Director, explains: “We have broadened our offering but at the same time stayed true to our core business. That strategy is paying off as we have remained competitive with other UK operations.” He continues: “To support our high quality commercial print production we wanted a more substantive bookletmaker. We liked the Horizon as it is very robust. It also manages long and short run litho and digital print. We consider it to be the market leader in this area. It has fitted in perfectly.” The 4,500bph Horizon SPF-200L landscape feed booklet maker combines stitching and folding with the ability to handle sheets up to 640mm in length. JDF-ready, it offers instant setups via a large icon-based colour touchscreen for user friendly operation. The screen can be used for on the run fine tune adjustments as well as the storage and recall of up to 200 jobs. Adds Faudemer: “It is fast in terms of productivity and we liked its build quality. It has only just been installed but we have already completed a time in motion study and there has been a significant improvement in our timelines. It has made an extremely positive impact on finishing workflow. www.ifsl.uk.com
Rajendra Patel, founder, Stag Print, added: — “When I began Stag Print all those years ago, I had no idea it would turn into the success it has. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching it grow, and I look forward to it continuing to do so under the expert eye of Sushil.” www.stagprint.co.uk

Watkiss Powersquare for Edinburgh Copyshop The Edinburgh Copyshop, based in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town, has added a Watkiss PowerSquare 160 booklet making system to its range of finishing equipment. The booklet maker was purchased from Morgana and Watkiss dealer CLC Presentation Systems, based in Grangemouth. The Edinburgh Copyshop handles a wide range of printing and graphic design needs, producing everything from photocopying through to large format prints. Commenting on the new Watkiss finishing equipment, Jon Huffer, Director of Edinburgh Copyshop, said: “We had been using an older Watkiss Vario machine, but it was having problems with heavier stocks and with certain digitally printed papers. The new machine is capable of handling a much wider range of substrates, and can also produce the square backed finish — something that customers have been very impressed with. It helps us to produce a booklet that doesn’t gape open, and gives the appearance of a perfect bound publication. “Our typical product will be turning SRA4 sheets (mixed weights) into an A5 sized booklet, but we are also looking forward to
promoting the ability to produce A4 landscape publications. That’s the sort of printed product that can stand out and look different.” Edinburgh Copyshop prints on Minolta and Xerox digital equipment, as well as providing large format printing solutions, including CAD/ plan printing. The PowerSquare 160 lets users produce booklets from a wide range of sheet sizes and materials, including A4 landscape format and heavy cover stocks. With optional accessories for full bleed trimming and book stacking,
printers can increase productivity and efficiency. The proven Watkiss SquareBack process produces a superior quality finish. Automatic set thickness sensing ensures optimum book quality to deliver added value professional booklets for the print shop and its customers. Commenting on behalf of CLC Presentation Systems, Managing Director Craig Cameron, said: “Having enjoyed a 20 year working relationship with Edinburgh Copyshop we were delighted to be able to assist them with this latest equipment purchase. Our Sales Manager, Jonathan Fowell, was convinced this was the right product for Jon and the Copyshop team — it gives them the opportunity to produce a wide range of top quality binding with the square-back finish. It’s our first PowerSquare installation in Scotland.” www.clc-online.co.uk
Heidelberg honoured in Stationers’ milestone At a dinner at Stationers’ Hall Heidelberg UK was presented with a facsimile copy of the Stationers’ Company Charter, signed by Charles II, to mark its 15 years as a Corporate Member of the Livery. The presentation was made to current managing director Gerard Heanue who was accompanied by George Clarke (MD when Heidelberg became the first corporate member in 2004) and Ryan Miles, who succeeds Gerard as MD on 1 April. “The Stationers’ Company is a standout Livery in that it continues with its original purpose of ensuring that the trades it represents maintain knowledge, encourage education and support others in need,” says Gerard Heanue. “That it continues to give service to our industries provides real added value. “Stationers cover a whole chain of activities from digital design through to printing and packaging, a combination which is not represented by a single body in any other organisation. Heidelberg has held many events at the Hall but representatives of the business also attend key forums, discussions and debates and that helps us better understand some of the business, technical and wider socioeconomic issues of the day and to hear different perspectives. Heidelberg has also submitted
entries to the annual Innovation Awards and was a winner with its digital technology two years ago.” At the dinner last week, all but three of the current 16 corporate member companies were in attendance and Liveryman Sir Tony Baldry spoke on Brexit and its impact on the
communications and content industry, notably in terms of VAT and copyright. Companies in the communications and content industry who would like to know more about becoming a Corporate Member, including the benefits and cost, should contact William Alden clerk@stationers.org

Desert Landscapes in London with Mimaki When architects and designers Tomaso Boano and Jonas Prišmontas, owners at London-based architectural firm Boano Prišmontas, were asked to exhibit their landscape installation, Alphabet, at Crate Brewery in Hackney, they initially planned to stage an existing project. However, after visiting the space, they were inspired to push the boundaries of creativity at the venue. The traditional white brick walls of the brewery — normally used as a blank base for hanging small pictures or paintings — could be turned into large windows on an infinite landscape to take the experience of urban Londoners to the next level. Only one piece of the puzzle was missing: how to decorate such large walls with 1:1 scale landscape pictures? The solution came from Mimaki EMEA who produced the prints in their Amsterdam showroom. BRINGING LANDSCAPES INTO THE CITY — It all started off in the headland of Dungeness, on the coast of Kent, South East England. “We aimed to convert some school desks that we collected from the street into an art piece, as we liked the idea of giving new value to items destined for landfill. We disassembled and reassembled them to create a series of structures that we then placed against the vast plane of that deserted area,” explains Boano. “We ended up creating a spectacular installation, with sleek free-standing portals to the gravel and shell beach of the headland under a grey sky, which we then decided to bring into the city.” After a couple of exhibitions at art galleries in London — with the installation consisting of the structures combined with small format pictures of the original art piece at Dungeness — Tomaso Boano and Jonas Prišmontas decided to take up a new challenge at Crate Brewery. “When we visited the location, we envisioned transforming those large white walls into the infinite landscape of Dungeness. The longest opposite walls could be decorated with 1:1 landscape pictures of the original installation, with the structures standing against the shorter wall of the room.” Boano Prišmontas had come up with a strong design concept that could both transform the space at the brewery and further enhance the value of their piece of art. What they needed then was finding a way to make it happen. “Prior to the Alphabet project we had been in contact with Mimaki and had heard about their large format printers. Therefore, we decided to get in touch with the company and see if they would like to be part of this event — and they did,” explains Prišmontas. Working to a tight deadline, Mimaki EMEA produced two large scale
artworks — sized 2.5x9.5 metres and 2.5x3.6 metres. “The result is stunning. Everyone who steps in is greeted by the visual impact of those massive high quality images and the way they completely change the perception of the space.” However, the aesthetic outcome is not the only benefit achieved. The artworks were printed on a special canvas — SILENCIO®, a sound absorbing technical textile from German company PONGS — with Mimaki’s UV printing technology. “The acoustic properties of the fabric contribute to enhance the quality of the location, by absorbing the noise of the vibrant, thronging crowds,” says Boano. “In addition, the use of a UV printing technology is in line with the original goals of our installation, bound to the topics of sustainability and respect for the environment which are central to our vision.” Owners at Crate Brewery are so enthusiastic about the Alphabet installation that they decided to extend the exhibition — initially set to last one month — by another month. “We always try to challenge our clients with projects that go beyond their requirements and when they like the result to the point of changing their original plans, we know we achieved something great,” states Prišmontas. “The project at Crate Brewery perfectly combines interior design, art and state of the art technology. In fact, we have re-designed the space — with some architectural crafting involved when installing the printed artworks.” adds Boano. www.hybridservices.co.uk
Reach CEO Simon Fox delivers Stationers’ Lecture The Stationers Company welcomed Simon Fox, CEO of Reach PLC to Stationers Hall where he delivered the Stationers’ Annual Lecture. He took as his theme The Power of Print and developed the argument that, although print-based businesses faced continuing challenges in the face of the digital onslaught, there was room for both print and online services especially where the delivery of news was concerned. He described how the Reach transition to digital and online offerings was essential to its continued success BUT also noted that the delivery of news stories through the printed medium was still important; major stories, images, and opinion pieces all continue to have their initial impact in printed form. He contrasted the fact that print still thrives albeit as a reduced but still profitable business with the demise of business such as Freeserve, Myspace, Friends Reunited, “and plenty of other websites that were supposed to be banging the nails into its coffin.” With a broad business background which includes music, books, office products and now newspapers Simon was able to draw on examples to illustrate his thinking from a wide range of the sectors which the Stationers’ Company covers.
Simon concluded that Print may not have the power it had in the 18th Century, but we shouldn’t write it off just yet. Liveryman Peter Day, former BBC Business correspondent, introduced the evening and moderated the subsequent discussion. www.stationers.org

The NeoPigment Robusto ink was developed with sustainability priorities and is ECO PASSPORT and GOTS V5 approved. The Kornit Presto solution suits a wide range of business and application needs in a variety of industry segments, including fast growing segments within the on-demand fashion and home décor markets. It is a highly productive solution, available in multiple configurations and able to print 450 square metres per hour. Gart Davis, CEO at Spoonflower, the world’s first web-based service for custom, on-demand fabric and design creation and a long time Kornit customer, commented, “We were thrilled to be able to test the new system and found the Presto to be in a class by itself; it prints beautifully on all kinds of fabrics, in a single step, with an environmentally friendly dry process, and now at a multiple of productivity. Our partnership with Kornit continues to be fundamental to our mission to make custom fabric

Xeikon introduces Panther Duracure Xeikon has applied to patent its Panther DuraCure UV curing technology for use with Xeikon PantherCure UV inks. This unique curing technology takes the Xeikon Panther UV-inkjet series of digital presses to new levels of performance. The Panther DuraCure curing technology is a unique technique achieving optimal gloss effects in all colours, as well as ultimate durability for multiple applications across multiple sectors. Key benefits are consistent curing performance, long-term durability, and the lowest possible energy consumption. Jeroen Van Bauwel, Director Product Management at Xeikon, states: “In response to industry demand, DuraCure is the next step forward in our strategy to provide a portfolio of complementary solutions. Good curing performance is an important factor when looking to invest in UV inkjet printing technology. The quality and durability of DuraCure expands the capabilities of this printing technology and makes it a very attractive opportunity. The new DuraCure technology can achieve optimal curing for a variety of applications, it combines with our PantherCure UV inks and substrates to achieve the highest quality results and provide added value business opportunities for our customers.” How the curing process works — Working with the Panther UV-Inkjet series of digital presses, the Panther DuraCure curing process operates in a number of ways. UV ‘pinning’ of white keeps the ink from spreading and bleeding into the CMYK inks. This ensures that the quality of the CMYK image is kept at the highest level. UV ‘pinning’ after black following CMYK transfer means DuraCure ‘freezes’ all colours across the image and maintains a uniform optimal colour brilliance and gloss. The use of LED curing, with its ability to go deep into the ink layers, combined with HG or mercury curing for lightly but effectively curing the surface
of the UV ink offers the best of both worlds. The intelligent use of these existing technologies is what makes the difference. Combining them in an optimal way to use less energy has a positive impact on the lifetime of the curing lamps. Van Bauwel concludes, “The combination of all these curing steps results in the most durable, sustainable, and effective curing solution on the market today. This is why we have applied to patent our Panther DuraCure curing technology. Xeikon continues to work towards excellence to enhance every facet of its portfolio. With our very long history and substantial knowledge of the digital label printing market and our access to market leading technologies as part of the Flint group, we can provide our customers with the very best products and services.” www.xeikon.com

Canon unveils Océ Arizona During the recent Sign & Digital exhibition, Canon demonstrated its new Océ Arizona 1380 GT to show how the power of smart technology can maximise productivity and media flexibility while retaining exceptional quality. This state of the art flatbed printer is designed to future proof print operations. It boasts unique Océ Arizona Xpert software capable of automating complex applications to produce real time print files, self learning technology, instant on printing, and outstanding speed, as well as print quality across rigid and flexible media for the widest possible range of applications. To offer a tangible illustration of real world intelligent printing impact, Canon inspired Print Service Providers (PSPs) with SPEED – its latest campaign to fuel emotion with print. A real life example, SPEED tells the story of how to amplify artistic exposure through digital print. Centred on photojournalist Horst Friedrichs, the campaign demonstrates how printing powered the creation of his high quality book and two photographic exhibitions, which celebrated a two decade journey of British subcultures. Visitors will be able to see how Friedrichs used this content to create merchandising from magazines, postcards, and posters, to engage
audiences and monetise his work. Neil McMinn, Head of Sales, Display Graphic Systems at Canon UK, comments: “This year’s Sign & Digital event provided us with an opportunity to highlight the sophisticated technologies set to expand printing horizons and efficacy over the next few years. Models such as the Arizona 1380 GT are helping to address common challenges that have capped printing output and new business scope; namely the need to increase productivity and media versatility. The show will allow PSPs to see these models in action, discover how to advance their print operations, and conquer the new business opportunities, which this technology brings to market. “Meanwhile, the SPEED campaign will

Papergraphics install HP R2000 at Tayprint The new R2000, first revealed way back at Fespa, May 2018, is the first hybrid printer to use HP’s patented latex technology and has been available through a select reseller channel since June of last year. Papergraphics, reseller for HP’’s new latex R-series equipment, helped introduce the R2000 machine at Dundee-printer, Tayprint. With high production speeds of between 45 and 100 square-metres per hour, paired with quality print output, the R2000 is the first 2.5m latex printer that offers the flexibility to print across a range of different substrate types; both roll-fed, flexible media, and rigid substrates up to 50mm thick on the flat-bed, without having to compromise on quality. The lack of odour from the latex inks also offers conscientious printers an improved working environment for production teams, which, coupled with the cost savings on the comprehensive service contract and warranty package offered with this machine, helped make it a straight forward purchase decision for Tayprint. James Miller of Tayprint says “The aim behind the investment was to increase the efficiency and remove onerous repair bills that we were experiencing on our incumbent UVC and solvent machines. The step up in quality and the all in maintenance package ensures an increase in business and a stable fixed cost.” Tayprint’s origins lie in traditional screen printing, but have grown with technology developments, scaling their business over the years to incorporate digital print, to become a leading trade printer. With over 40 years large format print experience to offer, alongside the investment the business has made in the latest technology, including this new HP R2000 printer, Tayprint now has the ability to offer an even more versatile and quality range of trade print services.
James continues, “The challenges have been the transition to a new ink system and learning the idiosyncrasies of latex ink across all the family of new machines, but assists in our drive to reduce waste, apply better time and resource management and build a greener profile. Eliminating the cost and aggravation in disposing of inks and ink polluted plastic bottles, replacing it with HP’s recycle programme is a big step in the right direction.” With further developments in the pipeline, Tayprint are continuing to work with Papergraphics to deliver their plans. “The advice and support from Papergraphics was brilliant — they were here throughout installation and setup to ensure we were completely supported, and were fully up and running with our new machine as quickly as possible, including profiling all of our relevant medias.” comments James. RMC Digital Print’s Revolution A second investment in systems and software from Durst, manufacturer of advanced digital printing and production technologies, has revolutionised wide format printing for RMC Digital Print now enjoying unprecedented print quality.
Durst has installed a Rho 512R Plus 5 metre wide 12 picoliter UV inkjet machine with state of the art Durst Qadro Array printheads along with Variodrop technology and uses multiple impulses for modulating drop sizes. The investment for trade printer RMC Digital Print based in Hull comes after a £1million programme of investment for additional print capacity and doubling production workspace. The roll to roll production printer complements the Durst Rho P10 inkjet flatbed installed two years ago at RMC Digital Print, which included a white configuration to enable the company to continue producing multi-layered backlit work. Now with a double white configuration on the 512R Plus, RMC Digital Print can produce better quality, partly illuminated flex face and textile graphics for the signage and exhibition sectors.
“We need highest quality production for exhibition, signage and other work, which the Durst machines can provide,” said Nicole Spencer, Operations Director at RMC Digital Print, whose turnover has grown by 20% to £3million in the past two years. “The quality on the Dursts is really, really good, particularly with fine text and for high density colours. One exhibition client has found that instead of double striking to get the green, it can now all be done in a single pass. And we can also leave
the machine to run on its own in the evening with unattended printing due to the carbon fibre bars and encompassed tracking software. It’s marvellous.” Alex Wood Commercial Manager at RMC Digital Print, added: “Our new 5m wide Durst will revolutionise the way we look at wide format printing. I have never seen quality like it in all my time in the industry. This printer is an amazing bit of kit and will change the way we look at flex face skins and soft signage in particular.” Peter Bray, Managing Director of Durst UK and Ireland, said: “Unattended printing and low production costs make the Rho 512R Plus one of the most economical printers of all time. We’re delighted to learn that that both Durst systems are opening up important new business opportunities with RMC Digital Print’s trade clients, for signage, museum and exhibition work. The high levels of consistency are matched by unprecedented quality and production.” www.durst-group.com

PIXEL PROPHET
A LONG, LATE GOOD FRIDAY An Easter surprise often means a fall of snow as much as a chocolate bunny, as the date moves around and may arrive before wintery cold snaps have completely gone. This year it was far enough away from an icy grip and even saw record temperatures, but the late date was not welcomed by everyone. Martin Christie gets that lengthy Friday feeling…
[A]
s many of you know QPP’s front of house is a busy working print shop based in Brighton. The city is a colourful cultural capital at the best of times, but in May it explodes into a perfect storm of art, theatre, dance and music not just in many venues, but also on every street corner and even people’s homes. So we are normally busy anyway serving the festival events with posters and flyers, not to mention reproductions of artist’s work, but with Easter falling unusually late in April this year, things got particularly hectic in the build up with customers failing to anticipate two shorter working weeks. It seems one of the consequences of the seven day 24-hour economy is that while customers expect to have a break, they don’t see why we should have one. The queue of people first thing on the Tuesday after Easter expecting jobs that had been taken in last thing on the previous Thursday speaks volumes. The allowance of ‘working days’ now seems only to apply to banks which seem to be the only businesses able to get away with doing exactly what the customer doesn’t want. As the reason for Good Friday falling so late in the spring was decided by a schedule agreed at a church council over eight hundred years ago, there’s no one to blame for the fact that, unlike Christmas, it doesn’t have a set date. Pope Gregory XIII, and the calendar for which he is responsible, could hardly have anticipated the pressures of a twenty-first century lifestyle. It would have been nice if the workload could have filled in some of the gaps in March, but it is what it is. At least one customer had started working on a deadline two months earlier. One of our regular artists had taken on a major task in recreating, in her own distinctive cartoon style, Brighton’s old Victorian West Pier, now sadly nothing more than a skeleton of rusting, fire blackened metal. Being creative rather than practical, she decided that she would illustrate the whole length of the pier, rather than the front or a selected section.
Piers, by their very nature are long, very long. That is the whole point of piers — so you can get a good way out to sea without getting your feet wet, and passing paddle steamers can stop by to take on pleasure cruises. This particular artist works digitally, rather than in oils or acrylics. She worked patiently in Photoshop, section at a time, but the scale and detail with which she started dictated that the final piece would also, like the pier, be very long, something she probably hadn’t completely calculated when she started. It was only at the stage when she was some way into it she came to us to see how long we could do a print, and how much it would cost. By which point she was too far into it to turn back, and had already promised the installation to a venue in May, and her little pet project was looking to turn out some three-and-a-half metres long. Being a valued regular customer, we were able to offer her a good deal, but as we were also testing the Epson SC-T5400 it was a really good chance to stretch its legs. Most large format printers say they can do long banners, but it’s a matter of how long and how difficult it is to do it. Simple black text on a white background is not really a problem but anything with any detail, and solid colour coverage can be an issue. Toner based printers can just exhaust their supply before they finish the job, and inkjet printers may suffer blockages and banding, and the paper itself may skew in the feed if the image is close to the edge. With files that are physically large, there is even a danger that data will drop out before the job is completely ripped, and the print will be cut short. In fact, as we all know printing anything big, anything that can go wrong usually does, but only towards the end of the job, never at the beginning. And somebody still has to be there all of the time to keep an eye on it just in case. So a printer that is reliable, accurate and reasonably fast, is the tool for the job, as well as matching paper and ink that will dry on contact to match the speed of the print and the rapidly expanding rolls of it.
The 5400 is only a four-colour printer but what has been remarkable, as we’ve been able to compare it directly with our eight-colour 7880, is the quality of prints that can be produced economically. The speed of an inkjet printer controls the amount of ink used, so it has always been a compromise between the two options. This printer seems to come closer than ever to closing the gap between those choices. If you are doing a lot of big prints, the time spent doing them is an issue because you still have to trim them, collate them and package them up. If you are doing one very big print, as in this case, time is also an important consideration in costing as someone is going to be tied up tending to it, and sorting out anything that goes wrong or interrupts the flow — like changing an ink cartridge which fortunately can be done on the trot without affecting the print. The longer it takes to print, the more chance something else will come up, like being called away to deal with a customer, so it’s all part of the same equation. Controlling the speed, and therefore the ink flow, the 5400 has a menu of useful pre-sets in the print dialogue box, including some handy thumbnails as prompts to show the type of setting selected. These range from superfast line drawings which will whizz out faster than you can catch them, to fine detail photographic, and even a bidirectional option which will print with nothing but solid black. Set on standard the printer will print according to the paper type selected on the printer itself, and this includes a good range of media types from plain paper to backlit film and canvas. There’s even an option to set a custom media profile, so after a little testing, there’s no excuse for not getting the formula right. In fact, I have found the pre-sets to be very reliable, and if you don’t match the dialogue settings with what’s actually on the spindle, the printer will remind you before it prints. We’ve been using a Sihl 210 Poster Bright paper as a pretty good all round product, heavy weight enough to take a lot of ink coverage if needed, and also stand up to rough handling without creasing. This was the choice for the

3.5 metre banner because it would have to cope with both. You cannot expect to handle anything that big delicately. Another plus is that the paper is also affordable enough to allow for mistakes going in the recycle bin! With more expensive paper you really have to cross your fingers and hope all will go well. On average the 5400 is at least twice as fast as our 7880 and at high speed over four times as fast, and that makes a big difference on the production line. Of course the 7880 is a much more accurate printer on subtle tones and photographic shadows and highlights in monochrome. Having three shades of black to play with, as well as a lighter pot of cyan and magenta, it’s hardly surprising. What is surprising is how good the 5400 is when it only has CMYK to mix with, and we’ve managed to please a good number of our notoriously picky artists with their work printed on it, but on quality art paper. The pigment inks are archival, so it still counts as a fine art print, and if the colours are predominantly primary ones, like many abstracts, there is very little difference to the eye. I did have one artist question, not the colour, but the paper as he had a gallery claiming they were not ‘proper’ Giclee prints as they didn’t have texture. I pointed out that not only was the paper authentic but also, if he wanted to pay four times as much to do his prints on German rag, I’d be happy to oblige. That rather settled the discussion. The economics of it are very much to the point with paper prices increasing relentlessly, and lead times always being squeezed regardless of unexpected holiday breaks. It was a big help during the previously mentioned Easter period rush because we could share the load between the two printers equally. For any fine art or photographic reproduction I almost always print directly from Photoshop, and use the Epson printer pre-sets because they give
vivid-online.com
me the most consistent results. Most often I have photographed or scanned the original artwork so have made any colour adjustments at source, so I should get pretty much what I see on the screen, allowing for the density difference between monitor brightness and solid print surface. Now that I have lived and worked with the 5400 for several months, I have got used to any small adjustments needed to get the best results, something that was second nature after several years with the 7880. I know what it can do, and what it can’t do. What it can do is print on a wide range of media including backlit lightbox paper and clear film. We do a lot of backlit for estate agents windows, all photographs of posh houses, and results from either printer are virtually identical. Well, at least the estate agents can’t tell the difference, they only notice if their logo is the wrong shade of orange. On clear film the 5400 is
12 incredible print effects using the

actually better because it tends to use less ink or at least the inks dry quicker, something that was always an issue before. On a practical note the 7880 would only see clear film if you attached a white strip to the leading edge of every print as well as the guides either side. The 5400 seems to be quite happy to accept the feed without complaint. Anyway, back to the main plot. The 3.5 metre pier, on standard paper settings, took 21 minutes to print, dead straight on the paper and dry to touch and manhandle immediately which was just as well considering the length of the roll building up in the catch tray. A delighted artist has it all installed in a seafront location for the next few months barely a pebble throw from the original hulk. The one thing you can rely on with print on demand is to expect the unexpected, and be prepared to tackle it!

England and feel that my years of experience and knowledge will be invaluable. “My goal is to ensure that Drytac products become the established range for all my customers, new and old, and our working relationships continue to flourish - as does Drytac.” His counterpart Dave is already very familiar with Drytac products having worked within the industry — enabling him to hit the ground

He explains: “I actually started printing in the family screen print business when I was seven, and I’m 48 this year!” www.drytac.com
Ryan Miles sets out his agenda for Heidelberg Heidelberg UK’s incoming managing director Ryan Miles has three aims for the business: to be even more customer centric; to offer customers new business models, including subscription based purchasing; and to maximise the opportunities presented by Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things. Heidelberg UK has a very strong reputation for sales, service support and customer satisfaction and Ryan Miles wants to build on that. “We want to understand our customers even better and look at how we can add value to their business,” he says. “I am in listening mode and hope to meet with many customers in the coming months, to hear how they see their company and the UK trade as a whole evolving and to discuss how we might partner them moving forward.” The world is moving towards subscription based living, both in the consumer and business environments. You only have to think of the way we access software (including updates), inner city car pool schemes and even aircraft engines which are charged by turbine usage. “For the older generation ownership still matters but for the younger
generation more and more of the way they transact is subscription based. In the next 10-15 years we will see a fundamental change in the way we transact in life and business,” says Ryan. He believes that high performance, top productivity customers may be attracted to a subscription model because it can help underpin the efficiency, allowing customers to standardise and to call off consumables just in time to minimise stock holding and to have a range of support services on tap. For those who do not perform as well as their peers the subscription model could also provide the consultancy and support to raise their game and become more competitive — and profitable. “There isn’t just one subscription model fits all but there are variations, tailored to the needs of the customer. It might not include machines in some instances, for example. It could just cover ‘lifecycle’ products by which I mean spare parts, consumables, services, training and consultancy. This is a way of ensuring your products are up to date at all times and your team are working in ways that maximise output and quality,” he says. www.heidelberg.co.uk

I use the Epson dye sublimation printers all the time and often combine digital print with other textile processes.” The other winners were Priti Patel, Ashlie Mills and Amy Prosser.
Heather Kendle, market development manager for Epson Europe, was there to meet Kelly-Marie and her student team. She says: “At Epson we really value our association with education. We want to encourage the next generation of designers and we learn from each other; it is a mutually advantageous partnership.” In addition to the dye sublimation equipment (SureColor SC-F6200), Epson had on show the hugely successful ten colour SureColor
SC-S80600 signage printer and its four colour kid brothers, the SureColor SC-60600 and SureColor SC-S40600 as well as a SureColor P-10000 which produces photographic quality prints. It also showed a range of applications for digital printers, including car wraps, wallpaper, fashion, labels, mats and mugs as well as indoor, outdoor and backlit signage. www.epson.co.uk

Pulp Process. Wood Fibres Separation The chips are cooked with water, additives and steam to remove a compound called ‘lignin’ - this creates the pulp mixture. The liquid generated from this process, called ‘black liquor’, is then reused as bio-fuel to produce energy. The pulp is then bleached.
The bleached pulp mixture now goes through a series of different screening processes, firstly to clean it and then to develop its physical properties. It is then sprayed onto the forming wires of the paper machine. At this stage certain additives may be required, depending on the paper in production, such as tints for coloured paper. A mat of pulp is then passed along the paper machine on the forming wire to the press section, then finally the drying section to squeeze out the remaining water. The finished product at the end of this process is paper.

Sign & Digital success for Antalis Antalis brought an après ski feel to this year’s Sign & Digital UK event by welcoming visitors to a stunning Alpine inspired stand showcasing some of the latest media trends, hardware capabilities and training solutions. The Antalis objective was to help UK quick print pros, sign making, display and digital businesses gain an appreciation of what Antalis can offer and how printed media can be effectively and creatively used. Visitors to the stand were able to see real examples of ingenuity as the stand itself was constructed of realistic wood effect printed panelling with robust log-style seating – all made using Xanita Board, launched by Antalis earlier this year. People were particularly attracted to this sustainable fibre board manufactured from fibres recovered from recycled cardboard boxes. Xanita Board is a lightweight and robust board suitable for a wealth of sectors and applications including retail, exhibitions and events, hospitality and interior design. Other product exclusives unveiled at the show included the latest Coala Textiles range; a collection of printable textiles for signage and decoration and a further environmentally-friendly alternative to traditional PVC. Together with the existing Coala Walldesign range, the complete portfolio of textiles and wall coverings will enable printers looking for diversification avenues to capitalise on this on-going opportunity in the interior design market. In addition to these new products, there was also a ‘sneak preview’ of Antalis’ new SUBSTR8 product selector tool, which has been designed to simplify the specification process by breaking down substrate solutions by attribute and application. Antalis’ ‘Décor Live’ demos were a popular attraction at the show demonstrating how vinyl, wall covering and magnetic applications within a retail and hotel environment can effectively transform a blank canvas to a personalised, impactful space. For visitors seeking to invest in hardware, Antalis’ leading hardware partners, Revolution Digital, Granthams, Agfa and Atech, were present to offer their expertise and help with tailored solutions to meet any specific requirements. Chris Green, Head of Channel for Visual Communications at Antalis comments: “We used Sign & Digital UK to highlight innovation and creative thinking around what’s next for the industry. This year’s show
was a great opportunity for visitors to gain insight on the latest products and techniques and it enabled us to run ‘taster sessions’ of our most popular Antalis Academy training workshops. We are delighted with the positive response we received as our guests embraced not only our wide range of media, hardware, products and services, but also how Anatlis is ideally positioned as a solutions provider and partner to inspire them to achieve greater vision.” www.antalis.co.uk

New business through ‘Cross Fertlilisation’ The NEWTECH 2019 series of local practical workshops launches May 2nd at the RAF Museum, Hendon North London and amongst the new NEWTECH group of top printing brands such as Xerox, Konica Minolta, MGI, United Brands of Scandinavia, Brother UK and Intec is Perfect Bindery Solutions. For PBS, Steve Giddins says: “NEWTECH provides a series of product demonstration and supplier/customer meeting opportunities at venues across the United Kingdom throughout the year, with the mission to reduce costs for all involved while delivering genuine quality time for research, discussion and business relationship development. When we learned about the NEWTECH proposition we immediately recognised the
strength of its merits. Conventional exhibitions have a place in the marketing mix, but the commitment they demand in terms of time and budget — for exhibitors and visitors alike — does lead you to question what should be their ideal frequency to give a reasonable ROI. The NEWTECH format fits a lot better into the modern marketing regime because all parties — suppliers and potential buyers — can prepare the ground in advance through a variety of digital media interactions, so that the physical interface time at a venue close to the customer can move the conversation forward at a meaningful stage. The fact that there is so much more to see, for the visitor, and so many more visitors to meet, for the suppliers, just adds value to all concerned.” www.coactiveevents.com/events/newtech
Epson to print faux leather at FESPA Epson is presenting the Ecotex synthetic leather printing solution at FESPA. This option enables the Epson SureColor SC-S series models to print directly onto synthetic leather for clothing, furniture, automotive and motor cycle applications as well as promotional products. The easy to use solution on show consists of the printer, Ecotex option and special software (written by Dev Studio) which combine to generate top quality results. Richard Barrow, Senior Product Manager — Production LFP, says: “Ecotex is an innovative Italian company with years of experience. They provide us with the best synthetic leather solution for the market and offer a range of materials to suit different applications. We are pleased to add both Ecotex and Dev Studio to the stand at this year’s FESPA and have high hopes for this solution and the business opportunities it brings to our customers. Many other third parties will be on hand at the Epson stand at FESPA including Avery, DryTac, Innova, Sihl and Neschen.” Epson will also introduce some new production grade media that will be available later on in the year, to fill a gap in the Epson portfolio of photo papers. It will be available in gloss and semigloss surfaces at 200gsm weight and is aimed at Epson T series and P series users producing photos and high end posters. First year BA textile design students from Birmingham City University will provide designs suitable for wall coverings, cushions, table tops, flooring and curtains on the stand. They are using Dulux’s optimistic ACT colour pallet which is described as appealing to a home dweller who
is bold and brave, fun but uncomplicated. They are working on designs which provide dramatic impact, show sensitive detail, contain playful imagery and combine lively colour. Many of the students will incorporate embroidery, weave and knit on top of the digital print produced on SureColor technology. Heather Kendle, market development manager for Epson Europe, says: “It is great to have students involved in the look and feel of our stand. This is the third year that we have worked with BCU and the quality continues to impress. We have selected designs that we believe will help us demonstrate both the versatility of the equipment and the creativity of young designers, hopefully inspiring visitors to FESPA to consider how they can develop their business.”
New products on the Epson stand
The company has remained tight-lipped about the details ahead of the FESPA show but it says there will be new models in its large format printers sector. Phil McMullin, sales manager of Epson UK, says: “We will unveil two new products at the show but will not give details at this stage. Visitors will be able to see the benefit Epson
can offer by having control of the print engine, printhead and inks and how open minds and R&D can help us bring new ideas to the development of printers. We recognise that the printing industry needs productive and costeffective solutions that are flexible and versatile in what they can do.” Epson Edge Print software for S-series and F-series printers will be highlighted. This software supports Epson’s Precision Dot technology, including its halftone module, lookup tables and micro-weave combining to make an instantly noticeable difference to print quality. In addition, Epson is continuing to expand the range of available colour profiles to optimise print quality on the most commonly used media. The stand will be production focused but also eye-catching and among the new designs will be work produced by university fashion and textiles students. This year there has been proactive connections with Birmingham City University, University of Westminster and Central St Martins — each fostering the textile and fashion designers of the future. Epson has a record of using their work in the décor and furnishings of the stand and this is set to continue. Phil McMullin says: “Printers are looking for innovation in the digital inkjet technology available to them, but also applications that can offer customers new products and solutions. We believe our stand will give them plenty to think about, showing solutions that meet various budgets and different production environments. I urge visitors to come to our stand and to discuss ways of harnessing digital technology for future growth.” www.epson.co.uk

FESPA
IMAGINE THE FUTURE OF PRINT WITH MIMAKI Mimaki Europe has announced that it will inspire customers to explore creative, innovative, profit generating possibilities in a futuristic atmosphere at the FESPA Global Print Expo 2019 (Munich 14-17 May 2019).
[U]
nder the theme “Imagine the Future of Print”, the company will take visitors to its stand (B6A30) on a journey through its world first and market first innovations in printers, software and cutting edge solutions, to demonstrate how they can take their businesses to the next level. A must see stop along that journey will be a brand new Mimaki large format printer, displayed at FESPA 2019 for the first time in the EMEA region. Featuring a best in class combination of productivity and print stability, new application opportunities, boosted usability and unprecedented substrate range flexibility, the new Mimaki print platform will provide a glimpse into future developments of UV LED inkjet technology. Thanks to Mimaki’s development of its 3D printer and slicing software, preparation and printing of 2.5D up to multiple layers will be easy and fast. A further highlight on the stand this year will be the new FDM 3D printer for the small direct to object printing market, focusing on self-production of jigs. The journey continues with workflow efficiency, which will be the keyword for digital printing for years to come. As Mimaki already introduced its IoT solution for the UJF-7151plus and the JFX-series, this year’s FESPA visitors can learn about the next phase of IoT showing a glimpse of the upcoming Job Controller IP software. Connectivity with Gravograph and Trotec laser systems will also be fully supported in the latest Rasterlink RIP. Last but not least on this journey, Mimaki will demonstrate its new Simple POP software, specially developed for the retail market. Shop owners require no graphic knowledge to create and design their own signage such as labels, stickers and roll-ups. The new software connects directly to Rasterlink for an automated workflow from design to print and cut on Mimaki’s successful and popular UCJV series. “Mimaki boasts a history of pioneering inkjet technologies and breakthrough innovations. Building on those solid foundations, the company aims to maintain its position at the
forefront of advancements in digital printing,” comments Danna Drion, Marketing Manager, Mimaki EMEA. “This vision of reflecting on past innovations and leveraging state of the art solutions to deliver a whole spectrum of unexplored future customer opportunities, underpins that ambition, and embodies our FESPA show theme.” Designed with a futuristic theme, Mimaki’s largest ever FESPA stand will lend a glittering silver guise to proceedings. As an example, LED-lit paths on the floor will lead to a central hanging kaleidoscopic installation, incorporating UV digital print on mirrors. Encompassing four key business areas strategically integrated across the stand – Sign Graphics, Industrial Products, Textiles and 3D — flagship Mimaki technology and a wealth of exciting, creative applications will be showcased. Visitors will also be able to take part in product demonstrations and engage directly with the Mimaki team. To learn more about how they could implement and use Mimaki technology to offer and sell new inkjet applications, Mimaki visitors will also have access to some leading designers and creative professionals who regularly use digital print within their work.
Connecting customers, partners, designers and innovators to generate new and rewarding collaborations will be key to Mimaki’s FESPA 2019 show and vision for the future. “With the help of our industry acclaimed inkjet print and cutting technology, we will use the show to demonstrate how businesses can become forward thinkers and boost productivity in a more advanced workflow. At the same time, we will also encourage and welcome visitor ideas, feedback and requests too – as always, this is essential R&D learning for us,” adds Drion. “What’s more, why not talk to us live at the show using #FutureofPrint and tell us what you think? In addition, go to Mimaki’s registration page for a chance to win one of 50 fantastic Flic Wireless Smart Buttons that we will give away during the show.” Mimaki is distributed in the UK and Ireland by Hybrid Services and the company’s Chief Operations Manager, Brett Newman extends an invitation to UK and Irish customers. “Mimaki’s FESPA stand is set to impress again this year and with the arrival of new technology, it’s going to be a busy show for us all, so we look forward to welcoming visitors to the exhibition in Germany.” www.hybridservices.co.uk

A premier start to 2019 for carbon It’s nine o’clock, Thursday 14th March 2019. The sun is shining high in an almost perfectly clear blue sky — the ideal weather to team up with 30 customers and the Woodland Trust to plant trees in the beautiful Scottish countryside; the first of many tree planting days planned for 2019. Said to have once sheltered William Wallace, Kinclaven Blubell Wood lies just north of Perth; an ancient woodland site purchased by the Woodland Trust in 2018, home to a beautiful collection of ancient oak and beech trees, an annual carpet of bluebells, deer, red squirrel and countless species of bird including three types of woodpecker, yellowhammer, redwing and fieldfare. The planting site is a cleared field on the edge of the woods that has been deer fenced ready to grow new native woodland. A total of 500 saplings were planted complete with supportive cane and vole protection before the team broke for lunch. The final part to the day included guided walks through the beautiful woodland and then more work clearing rhododendron, an invasive species to the region. Hussein Ismail, CSR Marketing Manager at Premier Paper comments “It has been a fantastic day for tree planting at this beautiful location in the Perthshire countryside. As always the success of the day is thanks to our customers and their clients, as well as the Woodland Trust; without any of whom the Carbon Capture programme would not be the industry’s leading environmental marketing initiative. We have a number of tree planting events planned this year.” A week later, Thursday 21st March 2019, the morning is slightly overcast, bird song and the river Bovey adding to the ambience on what is a surprisingly warm spring morning. The tree planting team gathered at the entrance to Pullabrook Woods in the Dartmoor National Park before embarking on the fifty minute trek to the day’s planting site. Bovey Valley is an enchanting cluster of three woodlands, Hisley Wood, Houndtor Wood and Pullabrook Wood, lying in the south east corner of Dartmoor National Park and contrasts with the starker landscape that inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Hound of the Baskervilles. Together with Trendlebere Down and Yarner Wood (owned and managed by Natural England) it forms part of the East Dartmoor National Nature Reserve. The Woodland Trust and Natural England work closely to manage this area. The day’s planting site had previously been felled in the 1960s and was turned into a plantation for beech and spruce. Now the Woodland Trust and Natural England aim to restore the area to mixed native broadleaf helping to increase wildlife and diversity in the region. A total of 600 saplings were planted, a mixture that mainly consisted of hazel as well as a few oak, complete with supports and wildlife protection tubes before the team broke for lunch. The trees planted at Kinclaven and Bovey Valley are part of a big project to expand both sites with new native woodland whilst maintaining the beautiful, ancient woodland that so many come to enjoy whether dog walking, running, exploring, nature watching or picnicking; for now and for years to come. www.paper.co.uk

The world’s first plastic-free glitter
Cosmetic Bioglitter® PURE, is based on natural materials rather than plastic, is biodegradable and is designed to decompose like a leaf in the natural environment to leave no trace. Developed by manufacturers Ronald Britton Ltd, the new Bioglitter® has been created for the cosmetic sector, but is robust enough to be used in coating, printing and decorative applications. It offers a 100% plastic free, certified biodegradable and verified microplastic free glitter alternative, for where anything less is not an option. Stephen Cotton, commercial director of Ronald Britton said: “Cosmetic Bioglitter® PURE is completely unique in the market, it is the first glitter of its kind in the world to use natural materials and no plastic. “The issue of plastic waste and microplastics is something we’ve been working towards tackling in glitter for the best part of a decade. Our first step on the Bioglitter® journey was the launch of our original Bioglitter® product back in 2014, followed with Deco Bioglitter® SPARKLE, a technical grade for coating and print applications, last year.” “Deco Bioglitter® SPARKLE was designed for the coatings market and remains our brightest Bioglitter® product. It has also been independently tested to prove that biodegradation is high in the natural environment. Cosmetic Bioglitter® PURE takes that one step further and offers the market a new glitter effect that is completely plastic free.” Cosmetic Bioglitter® PURE is completely durable as a glitter in product, but once it enters the natural environment, microbes will digest the glitter turning it into carbon dioxide, water and biomass. The product passes all current and future microbead and microplastic legislation and is certified biodegradable in natural freshwater environments, boasting the aforementioned OK Biodegradable WATER Certification from TÜV. Stephen added: “It’s no exaggeration to say this is a huge change for the industry, setting a new microplastic free glitter standard. Cosmetic Bioglitter® PURE truly is a Guilt Free Glitter, designed to offer a sparkly effect, but not at a cost to the environment.” www.discoverbioglitter.com

New Durst customer experience centre Durst has opened a futuristic new headquarters and Customer Experience Centre in Brixen, Northern Italy, that represents a watershed in its transformation into a highly integrated process service provider. Customers, employees and business partners were among 1,000 guests who attended the inauguration ceremony for the state of the art building. Speakers were CEO and Co-Owner Christoph Gamper, Owner Harald Oberrauch, Owner Christof Oberrauch, Mayor of Brixen Peter Brunner, Dean of Brixen Albert Pixner, Regional Council of South Tyrol representative Philipp Achammer, and Patrik Pedó and Juri Pobitzer from architects Monovolume. In future, Durst will invite more of its international customers to the Customer Experience Centre in the 5,700 square metre headquarters that embodies the transformation into a highly specialised, high-tech business. The integrated concept has been incorporated into the architecture of the building as it connects a new administrative block with production facilities. The iconic design for a company building with a tower was first presented more than 50 years ago, but never realised. Architects Monovolume pursued the original concept and designed a flat, floating ‘wing’ with a six-storey tower. The powder-coated metal façade has 850 multi-coloured, luminous window elevations arranged in pixel like fashion. The pixelated facade of Durst’s new headquarters is also a pointer to the company’s areas of business, as Durst is a leader in high performance printing systems — from image data processing and printing to final product finishing — all from a single source.
Durst employs more than 700 people and has more than 20 subsidaries across the world. Its history dating back more than 80 years is closely associated with the Oberrauch family, which is now in the third generation of ownership. The management board recently underwent a management change with Christof Oberrauch handing over the reins to his son, Harald Oberrauch. At the same time, Christoph Gamper was appointed CEO, and has now been given stronger ties to the long established business through joint ownership. Mr Gamper has led Durst’s transition and introduced a new management structure and a new business philosophy: passion for technologies and markets, innovation as the driver, and active collaboration and participation in every area. “This is a very proud day in the long history of Durst,” Mr Gamper told guests. “We do not fear the future. We are here to shape the future. We have the best employees, the best customers and the best technology. Driven by the mantra of innovation, Durst offers complete solutions from pixel to output. Here at our headquarters in the South Tyrol is where things come full circle with the mountain habitat and the aim of focusing not just on the machines but also on the people behind them.” He added: “Here it is not a question of appearance but of essence, of conveying the idea to the outside world, of creating a protected space for innovation, of bringing together very special people who have devoted themselves to a vision: to create something new, to inspire, and to always ask the next question.” www.durst-group.com

it is key in the sport segment, and is growing in the athleisure and functional apparel segments. Currently polyester is printed predominantly by analogue solutions, which creates major technological, cost and sustainability challenges. The new ground breaking Kornit NeoPoly Technology addresses these challenges with a new process and ink set implemented in the renowned Kornit NeoPigmentTM process. Kornit’s new process handles polyester applications without compromising on design, run size, substrate or labour. The breakthrough technological innovation is achieved by an innovative ink set and a physical and chemical process specifically developed for low temperature curing, and polyester enhancing functionalities developed to maintain fabric characteristics and provide superior fastness. This unique process prevents dye migration on polyester. The inks are Oeko-Tex and Eco-Passport certified and do not contain PVCs or other toxic ingredients. The first system equipped with the Kornit NeoPoly Technology is the new Kornit Avalanche Poly Pro, a member of Kornit’s world class reliable, highly productive industrial platform. The single step Poly Pro is the perfect system for the industry, enabling easy and cost effective shortruns and on-demand printing on polyester garments. One of Kornit’s first customers to embrace the NeoPoly Technology is DTG2Go, a Delta Apparel, Inc. company and leader in the direct to garment printing and fulfillment marketplace. “With our business serving the discerning activewear and performance apparel markets, we see increasing demand for personalised, decorated polyester garments,” comments Deborah H. Merrill, Delta Apparel, Inc.’s CFO and President, Delta Group. “We are excited about the new opportunities the Avalanche Poly Pro creates for our business. Through DTG2Go, we can now deliver individualised and small-run prints on a variety of polyester fabric types at the quality levels our customers demand.” The new Kornit Avalanche Poly Pro will be unveiled at Kornit’s Discover events on April 3-4, in the New York Metropolitan area, on April 11-12, in Duesseldorf, Germany and April 15-17, in Hong Kong. The system will also be publicly shown and demonstrated in Fespa Munich, CITPE China and ITMA Barcelona. Omer Kulka, Kornit’s VP of Marketing and Product Strategy, commented, “Kornit is on a mission to reinvent the garment and textile printing industry with game changing technologies for growing market segments. We continually work to break technology boundaries, so that our customers can innovate and open new markets and new business opportunities, while being more operationally efficient. The new NeoPoly Technology is further proof of this innovation and reinvention mission.” www.kornit.com

together with Kotkamills’ plastic free, recyclable, and biodegradable board produces a digitally printed paper cup that answers consumer demand for sustainable paper cups to be used for drinks on the go. Sébastien Stabel, Market Segment Manager Carton Packaging at Xeikon, says, “We were delighted to test and validate the new paper cup stock ISLA® Duo from Kotkamills. During testing, we saw a match between our food safe dry toner technology and the ISLA® Duo board characteristics. We tested printability, productivity, and toner adhesion. The results were excellent and consistent.” Xeikon printed the Kotkamills ISLA® Duo on a roll to roll Xeikon 3500 series with dry toner technology. Following the excellent results, Xeikon added the ISLA® Duo to its print media list as a Xeikon validated substrate. Stabel continues, “We are convinced that our roll to roll dry toner engine set up offers a perfect technical fit for paper cup converters and has the potential to create new or alternative business opportunities.” Kotkamills board production technology and the raw materials used in the ISLA® Duo production offer a high stiffness cup with a smooth and pleasing tactility. The barrier properties needed for the paper cups are produced with water based dispersion, making it a plastic free alternative. Unlike traditional PE coated paper cups, the water based dispersion barrier layer of the ISLA® Duo does not become charged by static electricity. This is the innovative key to achieving high printing speeds and excellent stackability properties. Saila Kettunen, Director Barrier Boards at Kotkamills Oy, states, “The cooperation with Xeikon in developing the high quality of digital printing of our ISLA® Board has been very smooth and fruitful. The suitability of our material for digital printing provides cup producers with the possibility to offer individual and smaller, customised batches of plastic free paper cups that are easy to recycle within any paper or board waste streams. We consistently endeavour to bring our best know how and experience to our innovations. At Kotkamills, we are passionate about changing the game, and we are proud to have been nominated as one of the winners of the NextGen Cup Challenge, the global innovation initiative that took place at the end of February 2019. This ground breaking challenge was launched by the NextGen Consortium dedicated to advancing the design, commercialisation, and recovery of food packaging alternatives.” Stabel concludes, “By working together with leading suppliers in substrates, workflow, converting, and finishing we effectively demonstrate what can be achieved by fully integrated end to end solutions for digital production. At the Xeikon Café 2019, we will share actual applications and business ideas that have proven to immediately drive business growth. We are delighted to be working with Kotkamills as our partner and we are looking forward to piquing the interest of our visitors in this game changing solution.” For 2019 Xeikon Café events, visit www.xeikoncafe.com

StickerShop succeed with high-volume eCommerce Creating a successful business isn’t just about developing and selling a product — true success lies in making the customer experience as simple and fast as possible. Bristol-based online store, StickerShop are living proof that simplicity and reliability are important factors for business growth and, with the help of Roland DG equipment, they’re taking their business to new heights. Origins — StickerShop was founded in January 2017 by directors Shane Pritchard, Calum Baker and Martin Baker. With a background in commercial print, they started the business from a solid foundation of technical expertise with their first printer, the SOLJET PRO 3 XC-540. But print wasn’t their only passion — the StickerShop team are also keen web developers and they used these skills to create a clean, user-friendly eCommerce platform for the business. The hard work they put into developing their online presence paid off as they soon discovered a need to boost their production. In an effort to expand their capabilities, they bought their first TrueVIS VG-640 in November 2017, followed a year later by another VG-640, both purchased through authorised Roland dealer, PrintMAX. Business — “At StickerShop our goal was to make our website and business model as simple and easy to use as possible, but without cutting any corners!” StickerShop started out with a clear and distinct goal and they worked hard to align every element of the business with that goal. By managing their own website, they can tweak the customer journey and keep it as streamlined as possible. This approach has been so effective that
they currently receive over 50 orders per day, and they need equipment that lets them fulfil those orders in a speedy and reliable fashion. “We have a commitment to get a proof ready within two hours of receiving an order and to dispatch the finished stickers within 48 hours,” explains Shane, “To do that, we need reliable machines which can produce stickers and labels as quickly as possible without compromising on the quality our customers have come to expect” The Machines — The TrueVIS VG-640 has become a crucial device for hundreds of print service providers and StickerShop is no different. “We run both our VG-640s 24 hours a day, six days a week, using the take-up units for overnight runs.” says Shane, “Because we deal with such high volumes, the reliability and build quality of the Roland printers is just what we need.”
Their efficiency and reliability are strong features of the VG series, but it’s the print quality and cut accuracy that keeps StickerShop’s customers coming back time and again. “We get a lot of return custom and with over 80 five star reviews on Google, we’re clearly doing something right.” In a typical order, StickerShop will produce full-colour artwork on the highest quality setting. Then, they’ll either cut the order into A4 sheets of weeded stickers, or use a perforation cut setting to die-cut each sticker individually. With a constant stream of orders coming through, having a machine that excels at both print and cut applications is a huge benefit to the business. Peace of Mind — Aside from its ability to print and cut, the VG-640 is packed with several features that save time and waste. To put the spotlight on just one, Shane was particularly impressed with a feature that’s often overlooked. “The ink bags are great,” he says, “Unlike the previous cartridges, you can really squeeze every bit of ink out. They’re also really easy to insert and remove which is a great benefit for us; we frequently swap inks between machines as part of our workflow and the process needs to be as quick as possible.” Customer reception — Because their website is so accessible, StickerShop deals with a wide range of customers, from individuals to global corporations. To give an idea of the diversity, they have completed window graphics for Google using static cling material, vehicle graphics for Amazon UK, and even stickers for new Dyson products, to name a few. StickerShop’s customers have come to expect high quality and the VG-640 lets them achieve pristine, repeatable results and keep a 100% customer satisfaction rate. The thing about satisfied customers is that they tend to return and when they do, their expectations are even higher. “Whenever we get repeat custom, it might have been a few months since they last ordered with us,” Shane explains, “The VG lets us print the same job, months later, and be sure that the colours match the file copy we hold from last batch.” “We’re always amazed at what the VG can do,” he continues, “One of our customers regularly orders small decals for model cars. These stickers are tiny and can be as small as 3-4mm across. The VGs handle this with ease, printing crisp details and cutting them with extreme accuracy” www.stickershop.co.uk www.rolanddg.com

READERS’ SCRIBES
SOMETHING TO SHARE…? A rare book
A collector of rare books ran into an acquaintance who told him he had just thrown away an old Bible that he found in a dusty, old box. He happened to mention that Gutensomebody-or-other had printed it. “Not Gutenberg?” gasped the collector. “Yes, that was it!” “You idiot! You’ve thrown away one of the first books ever printed. A copy recently sold at an auction for half a million pounds!” “Oh, I don’t think this book would have been worth anything close to that much,” replied the man. “It was scribbled all over in the margins by some guy named Martin Luther.”
Rain drops falling
One raindrop said to another; “Two’s company, three’s a cloud!”
Getting there
Grandson: “When did you first realise you were getting old, grandpa?” Grandpa: “When I started having my midnight snack at 9:30 pm.”
Tune it in
I listen to the radio with such frequency that my ear Hertz.
Spell-checker
Everyone knows I’m a stickler for good spelling. So when an associate e-mailed technical documents asking me to “decifer” them, I had to set him straight. “Decipher is spelled with a ph, not an f,” I wrote. “In case you’ve forgotten, spell-checker comes free with your Microsoft program.” A minute later came his reply, “Must be dephective.”
Historic Joke
Voicemail is my sworn enemy! I have never understood how it works. Finally, I broke down and called the office IT guru at tech support. “I can send you an instruction sheet,” she said. “Great, fax it over.” “Sure,” she said. “But fax it right back. It’s my only copy.”
Historic Joke V2
Tech support: “What does the screen say now?” Customer: “It says ‘Hit enter when ready.’” Tech support: “Well?” Customer: “How do I know when it’s ready?”
Not PC savvy
A computer-illiterate called the help desk asking how to change her password. “Okay,” I said, after punching in a few keys. “Log in using the password 123456.” “Is that all in caps?” she asked.
Shorts weather
Sometimes I like my steak under cooked...but that’s rare. What did the alien say to the garden? Take me to your WEEDER! Why does a room full of married people look so empty? Because there’s not a single person in it. How do science teachers freshen their breath? With experi-mints! If pilgrims travelled on the Mayflower, what do college students travel on? Scholar-ships. Why did Miss Muffet need directions? She lost her whey. Did you hear about the two bed bugs that met in a mattress? They got married in spring.
Pretty payout
One day a man went to an auction. While there, he bid on a parrot. He really wanted this bird, so he got caught up in the bidding. He kept on bidding but kept getting outbid, so he bid higher and higher and higher. Finally, after he bid way more than he intended, he won the bid — the parrot was his at last! As he was paying for the parrot, he said to the auctioneer, “I sure hope this parrot can talk. I would hate to have paid this much for it, only to find out that he can’t talk!” “Don’t worry,” said the auctioneer. “He can talk. Who do you think kept bidding against you?
Bad chemists
Why are chemists bad at playing pranks? They lack the element of surprise.
On Ya Head Son
I got a lift to the eleventh floor, and as I got out, the operator said “Have a good day, son.” “Don’t call me son,” I said. “You’re not my dad.” He scratched his head, “No, but I brought you up, didn’t I?”
Hippy hair do
BARBER (To a long-haired teenager): You’re next. TEENAGER: I’m not waiting for a haircut. BARBER: What are you waiting for? TEENAGER: Nothing. My Dad’s looking for me and this is the last place in the world he would look.
calls to his wife in the next room, “Margaret, your mother wants to talk to you!”
Walking in your shoes
The UK manager for Canon is packing for a trip to Japan and being aware of the custom of removing one’s shoes before entering the home, he ask his staff to procure a pair of loafers. The day of the trip, two salesmen showed up ready to go.

New diet
Two women were shopping. When they started to discuss their home lives, one said, “Seems like all my boyfriend and I do anymore is fight. I’ve been so upset I’ve lost 10 pounds in two weeks.” “Why don’t you just leave him then?” asked her friend. “Not yet,” the first replied, “I like to lose at least another 10 pounds first.”
A girl in our office, from South America, is always in a hurry...we call her URGENT-TINA. What kind of alien makes the best of friends? The one that is down to Earth. Why was the robot upset? Everyone was pushing its buttons. When I was a kid we had a game of trying to catch fireflies. We called it HIDE-AND-GLOW-SEEK. My friend told me he had the body of a Greek god. I had to explain to him that Buddha is not Greek. Why shouldn’t you fall in love with a pastry chef? He’ll dessert you. What is the difference between in-laws and outlaws? Outlaws are usually wanted. As Noah was building the ark, what type of lights did he use? FLOOD LIGHTS!
I need a pay rise
The perfect man
Stitch that
My neighbour, a tailor, has a new job. I asked him how much he enjoyed it. “It’s Sew-Sew I suppose”
I told my boss that three companies were after me and I need a pay rise. My boss asked, “What companies?” I replied, “Gas, water, and electricity.”
Yes mother
A man answers the phone and has the following conversation: “Yes, mother, I’ve had a hard day. Margaret has been very difficult — I know I ought to be more firm, but it is hard. Well, you know how she is. Yes, I know you warned me. I remember you told me that she was evil and would make my life miserable and you begged me not to marry her. I should have listened to you. You want to speak with her? All right.” He looks up from the phone and

Mr. Potato-head
He’s tanned. He’s cute. He knows the importance of accessorising. And if he looks at another girl, you can rearrange his face.
Why am I here?
A copier salesman wakes up in jail. He asks the first police officer he sees, “Why am I here?” “For drinking,” replies the officer. “Great,” says the salesman, “when do we start?”

New garlic diet
Did you hear about the new garlic diet? You don’t actually lose weight, but you look thinner from a distance.
Eating with friends
A duck, a skunk, and a deer went out for dinner at a restaurant one night. When it came time to pay, the skunk didn’t have a scent, the deer didn’t have a buck so they put the meal on the duck’s bill!
Best joke this month?
What do you call a bee that can’t make up its mind? A may-bee!
Fifty gallons of milk
A lady went into the mini market and asked for fifty gallons of milk. The shop owner, amazed, asked her what she was going to do with that much milk. “I have a skin problem and the doctor prescribed a milk bath.” The clerk asked, “Pasteurised?” She replied, “No, just up to my chin.”
Ten plus
A teacher asked little Johnny if he knew the numbers 1 to 10 well. “Yes! Of course! My dad taught me, even more than 10!” “Good. What comes after three?” “Four,” answered the boy. “What comes after six?” “Seven.” “Very good,” said the teacher. “Your dad did a good job. Now, what comes after ten?” “A jack!”
Julia’s mother asked her,

An atom loses an electron…it says, “Man, I really gotta keep an ion them!” Why did the can crusher quit his job?Because it was soda pressing. My doctor was giving me a hard time about my health. To get back on his good side I bought a puppy and named him ‘Five Miles’. That way, when I went to see my doctor I could tell him, “I walk five miles every morning!” Knock Knock. Who’s there? Owls say... Owls say who? Yes, yes they do. Why did the sea monster eat five ships that were carrying potatoes? No one can eat just one potato ship. When a man opens the car door for his wife, it means one of two things. It’s either a new car or a new wife!
Bored with retirement
I was not ready for retirement and was looking for a new adventure. So I decided to take up FENCING. My neighbours have threatened to call the police if I don’t put it back.
Road crew
One morning a local highway department crew reaches their job site and realises they have forgotten all their shovels. The crew’s foreman calls the office and tells his supervisor the situation. The supervisor says, “Don’t worry, we’ll send some shovels... just lean on each other until they arrive.”
Post dinner joke
Who do stamps go to dinner with? Why their mail friends of course!
“Why are you feeding birdseed to the cat?”
You want me to stay?
A wife got so mad at her husband she packed his bags and told him to get out. As he walked to the door she yelled, “I hope you die a long, slow, painful death.” He turned around and said, “So, you want me to stay?”
Reach for chocolate
A man tells his friend, “I went to my doctor to see if he could help me give up smoking.” “What did he say?” “He suggested that every time I felt like a smoke I should reach for a bar of chocolate.” “Did that do any good?” “No, I can’t get the chocolate to light.”
Flat tyre
A software manager, a hardware manager, and a sales manager are driving to a meeting when a tyre blows. They get out of the car and look at the problem. The software manager says, “I can’t do anything about this — it’s a hardware problem.” The hardware manager says, “Maybe if we turned the car off and on again, it would fix itself.” The sales manager says, “Hey, 75% of it is working — let’s sell it!”
Lovely Child
My wife said she’d like to have another baby. I agreed. The one we have is starting to annoy me.

I tried to change my password to “14days”... It was rejected as “too weak”!

What’s the wifi password? Me: What’s the WiFi password? Barman: You need to buy a drink first. Me: Okay, I’ll have a coke. Barman: Is Pepsi okay? Me: Sure. How much is that? Barman: £3. Me: There you go. So what’s the WiFi password? Barman: You need to buy a drink first... No spaces, all lowercase!
Two weathermen
What happened when two weathermen each broke an arm and a leg in an accident? They were worried about the four casts.
Doctor’s note
An elderly lady came to see a young male doctor with her husband. After the consultation was finished, the elderly man suddenly asked the doctor for a piece of paper and a pen. Although a strange request, he complied, and the man quickly wrote something, then handed the folded piece of paper to the doctor. He told him to read it as soon as they had left. The doctor thought that the man perhaps had an embarrassing medical complaint he didn’t want to talk about in front of his wife, so the doctor didn’t hesitate in obeying the request. Once the couple had left the room, the doctor sat down and read the piece of paper. Its contents were thus: “Your fly is undone.”
“that’s where my canary is.”
