NEWS

INNOTECH LAUNCHES BACK TO BUSINESS SUPPORT After a year like no other, many financial predictions suggest the UK will see positive growth during the remainder of 2021 and into 2022. With retail and hospitality once again trading, albeit with some restrictions, and events, exhibitions and tourism to come soon, Innotech Digital has announced a support scheme to help customers overcome short-term cashflow issues and get back to trading as soon as possible. While government schemes, such as furlough and the bounce back loans, have helped companies stay afloat, Innotech believes the sign and print industry also needs to help itself to meet the challenges of getting business moving again. Effective immediately, Innotech is offering all existing and new customers a guaranteed 30 day credit limit of at least £500. Kieran Dallow, Innotech Digital’s Marketing Manager, says, “Many providers of print and display graphics have had to survive on very low revenues over the last year and after the most recent hard lockdown, many companies are struggling with cashflow. Our new Back to Business Support Scheme will allow our customers to get back to printing immediately by offering fast and effective credit terms that allow them to take orders and

deliver paid work straight away.” Sign and display printing relies almost entirely on the business of many of the industries most affected by the pandemic. Retail and hospitality has been stop start with many restrictions imposed on them, while tourism, events and exhibitions have been utterly decimated. As these industries gradually return to life and start spending on promotional services and products again, it is vital that the infrastructure of printers, designers, sign-makers and graphics providers are ready and able to deliver what they need. Innotech’s Business Support Scheme will help them do just that. 30-day credit, no quibble — The scheme offers a guaranteed credit limit of at least £500.00 with 30day credit terms for three months when customers sign up to a Direct Debit payment system. These terms will be available to all companies as Innotech aims to help ease some of the initial pressures for

ROUTE 1 PRINT NEW SERIES OF SERVICE UPDATES South Yorkshire trade printers, Route 1 Print, continue their quest to simplify the lives of trade print buyers by launching a series of time saving updates to their web service, including favourites, saved artwork, re-order, and quote to order features. Since launching in 2012, Route 1 Print has strived to make online print ordering an easy process for trade buyers. The company ethos puts clients at the heart of all decision making as they work together to create the best client ordering experience possible. After another of their regular client surveys, Route 1 Print has responded to specific feedback and requests with a host of service updates. Each update is designed to save clients time and effort, so they can concentrate on building their business and offering a great service of their own. The new ‘favourites’ function allows Route 1 Print clients to save product specifications that they order again and again, instead of having to build products from scratch. The company has also released a ‘saved artwork’ function, allowing clients to create a library of regular artwork files and making it even easier to order everyday jobs. If a client wishes to order the exact same print again – same product specifications and same artwork, Route 1 Print has combined the first two features in their new ‘re-order’ function. Making repeat orders is now incredibly quick as clients need only re-approve their artwork at the click of a button.

4

Finally, Route 1 Print clients now have the option to manage their quotes online. Instead of sending emails back and forth to account managers, clients can approve or reject quotes from the comfort of their account area. This is yet another improvement that saves precious time for trade print buyers. “Launching these new features for our clients is a real step forward in improving our service for them,” says Christie Round, Brand Manager. “All of these updates will make it easier for clients to manage their orders, and they are all things that we know our clients are looking for, thanks to our surveys from the last year.” Christie goes on to say, “This is a continuation of our efforts to build the best online trade print platform on the market. The first step was in launching our Reseller Tools hub, where we have a number of free resources for our clients, including free stock images and marketing templates. We will continue to use client feedback to shape our offering in the future.” Route 1 Print prides itself on being led by their clients. In the last year alone, the company has release 40 brand new product ranges as a direct result of client feedback – all to support client businesses through the pandemic.

businesses looking to get back to supporting clients and engaging with prospects in a face to face setting once more. Companies wishing to benefit from the Innotech Business Support Scheme simply need to complete a few simple steps, starting by filling in an online form to register. The accounts team will ask them to complete a direct debit mandate and account application form and once confirmed they can start placing orders. Dallow concludes, “This offer is open to existing and new customers and we believe it is a great opportunity for print providers to secure business and get trading profitably again before having to spend scarce funds on materials. We want this scheme to provide our customers with a tangible and helpful leg-up at a time that is undoubtedly tricky but also has the potential to be extremely exciting and successful. The UK is ready and waiting to get Back to Business and here at Innotech we are doing all we can to help our customers make the most of the opportunities available and sustainably build their businesses back to pre-pandemic levels — and beyond.” www.innotechdigital.com/back-to-businesssupport-scheme-application-form

THE PEN WAREHOUSE AND SNAP PRODUCTS INTRODUCE COVID-19 WORKPLACE TESTING The Pen Warehouse and Snap Products began COVID-19 workplace testing recently with 100% negative results. This government scheme using lateral flow testing kits will help to identify more positive cases of COVID-19, including asymptomatic individuals, and will ensure those that are infected isolate. This will reduce the spread of the virus and protect both employees and their families. This is a further addition to the companies’ COVID-secure measures, which include: • Unlimited supply of reusable face masks. • Automatic hand sanitising stations available at key points in the building. • In-house manufactured, HSE licensed biofree® sanitiser at every workstation and every desk. • An infrared thermographic camera installed at the staff entrance which works automatically, creating a safer environment as the handler does not need to be present. Should anyone present with symptoms of a fever, it has an alarm system notifying key staff members. • Robust in-house manufactured acrylic screen guards in place where desks are positioned towards each other. • Floor graphics and signage throughout the building to encourage social distancing and display COVID safety guides.

• On site visitors are provided with PPE and are asked to fill out a questionnaire upon arrival for contact tracing purposes, as well as have their temperatures taken. Helen Dyl, Operations Director, commented: “Employee health and wellbeing is of the utmost importance and we have made every possible effort to keep our staff members safe.” She added, “We manufacture many of these products in-house which has meant we can adapt quickly to the government’s changing requirements, without impacting operations.” www.pens.co.uk

JOHN DOLLIN PRINTING SERVICES ENHANCES VISION John Dollin Printing Services Ltd has installed a HP Indigo 100K digital press to expand the company’s digital printing capabilities, following its acquisition by Venn Holdings Limited. Founded in 1976, John Dollin Printing Services (JDP) is today one of the largest and most wellrespected commercial printers in the south of England. Based in Hampshire, the company prides itself on its ability to provide customers with a complete print solution, specialising not only in the printing of stationery, marketing materials and packaging, but also personalised mailing and finishing services. Last month, the company was acquired by Venn Holdings Limited, an acquisition vehicle headed by print executives Anthony Thirlby and Andy Rae. The acquisition forms part of the holding company’s mission to create a technology focused printing group that is a leader within the label, commercial and packaging sectors. Venn Holdings is intent on redefining the break even point of digital to analogue products. After a rebrand from John Dollin to JDP, the print provider’s philosophy is clear; that technology, market requirements and operational excellence are the core infrastructure elements of the business. JDP had already installed a HP Indigo 7600 digital press and a HP Indigo 12K digital press which equipped the business with an impressive digital

6

capability, particularly for the geographical area. However, the company has since decided to replace the HP Indigo 7600 with an Indigo 100K, only the second 100K digital press in the country. Despite the huge leap in capacity, the company is unfazed, thanking its latest installation for immediate business growth, already up 70% on digital impressions volume. It has since landed new contract wins and will leverage its increased capacity to create strong partnerships across both B2B and B2C markets. The installation of the HP Indigo 100K is also the first step in enhancing JDP’s digital and technology led vision. Not only does the new press support this vision, it also delivers the company’s ability to scale-up with minimal labour costs. When speaking about the latest installation and the business’ overall vision, Anthony Thirlby said,

“Deploying and utilising the correct technology across the full spectrum of our targeted product portfolio is paramount to the strategy of JDP and Venn. We have a very clear vision on how we incorporate our clients’ requirements from the ever evolving world of the printed product. Ensuring we are a tech-led smart manufacturer of all things print, will always be our core DNA.” Peter Jolly, Indigo Country Manager, UK and Ireland, HP Inc. also commented on JDP’s new installation, adding, “It is refreshing to see JDP’s focused strategy here in removing two litho presses and applying the associated volumes across the two B2 HP Indigo presses. A clear strategy that acknowledges the way print and its run lengths are behaving both now and in the coming years ahead.” www.hp.com

EPSON EXPANDS ITS 76-INCH DYE-SUBLIMATION RANGE Following the successful launch of its first 76inch, industrial grade textile printer in 2020, Epson announces the expansion of the range to include the SC-F10000H. The SC-F10000H textile printer raises productivity standards with the option of two different inksets that enable the highest quality output for a diverse range of applications from clothing, to home furnishings, promotional goods and soft signage. The first configuration is CMYK with genuine fluorescent pink and fluorescent yellow ink, which is ideal for high fashion sportswear and apparel that demands vivid colour reproduction. A second configuration option is CMYK with light cyan and light magenta inks [1], which reduce graininess and harsh halftone, so the quality of print is greatly improved. This is especially noticeable in the photographic appearance of blue skies and some flesh tones. [1] Inksets are not interchangable Neil Greenhalgh, Product Manager, Epson Europe, says: “With the introduction of the SCF10000 last year, we set new standards for the dye-sublimation sector. Our customers demand fast turnaround times, consistent performance, high quality output and reliability. With the new SCF10000H, customers can now expand their product

offering into the lucrative sportswear/high fashion apparel or home furnishings and soft signage markets.” SC-F10000H features include: CYMK + genuine fluorescent yellow and fluorescent pink or CMYK + light cyan and light magenta; Up to 245m 2/hr highspeed printing; PrecisionCore Micro TFPprintheads; Epson Precision Dot Technology (blending three dedicated technologies: Halftone, LUT and Micro Weave); Easy media setting (media loading lever front and back); Auto-adjustment technology including an integrated RGB camera; Dryer(less ink transfer to media reverse and wrinkle elimination); Advanced Auto Tension Control(Ad-ATC) for

accurate and stable media feeding; Bulk Ink solution (with ten litre or three litre ink boxes supported by ‘hot-swap’ function); Operator replaceable parts; Ink system usability (easy mount, ground based, waste bottle sensor; Accurate paper-feedingsystem; Nine inch LCD highly intuitive touch panel; and an EMX profile support to ensure accurate and consistent output. To further improve consistency and reliability, all of the components for the SC-F10000H, including printheads, ink, firmware and software are manufactured by Epson. The SC-F10000H will be available from July 2021. www.epson.co.uk

XEROX PREMIUM NEVERTEAR ANTIMICROBIAL PAPER Antalis UK has released a new and improved Xerox Premium NeverTear paper which now features a Biomaster antimicrobial coating. Xerox Premium NeverTear is a synthetic paper, designed to create durable documents in the most challenging environments. The new addition of Biomaster antimicrobial protection provides a more hygienic solution to these documents. Xerox Premium NeverTear synthetic paper, stocked by Antalis UK, is waterproof, tearproof, greaseproof and alcohol resistant, making it a natural choice for consumers applications requiring a robust product in a variety of challenging environments. Its coated white matt polyester film makes it suitable for laser printing, and it has high durability without the need for lamination or encapsulation. Over the past year the importance of hygiene has grown significantly as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Xerox Premium NeverTear is designed

to be easily cleaned with soapy water, bleach or safely disinfected with a variety of alcohol and solvent based agents, but now has the added protection of the antimicrobial coating, ensuring that the product offers a more hygienic solution to documents. NEW FASTBIND PUREVA NEO BINDER

In a move to diversify into short run, customised, soft and hard back books, Ashgate has installed Fastbind’s first PUREVA NEO binder in the UK, together with the recently launched Casematic A46Z semi-automatic casemaker at Minuteman Press in King’s Lynn. “We’ve seen a rapid expansion since we introduced e-commerce and this was one of the reasons for our move two years ago to a 10,000sq ft, energy efficient, flagship store,” said Dan Roberts, Sales Manager. “Online occasion cards, which we impose, print (on two Irridesse Xerox digital printers) bar code and pack ready for delivery all over the UK make up a large percentage of our operation. The rest comes from serving local businesses in and around Norfolk with their printing and finishing requirements. Being able to manufacture a huge product range in house has allowed us to develop a reputation locally for same day delivery.” “We have now turned our attention to short run, customised books which lend themselves to online ordering and will expand our e-commerce offering. In fact we are fulfilling a demand because customers are already asking for them,” he continued. The company did look at a larger, more automated machine before the Fastbind range was recommended to them. “Their equipment is more suited to the variability of our work and the production of very short runs,” Dan explained. The PUREVA NEO binder is a new generation of perfect binders. The NEO ,which replaces the PUREVA XT, is an attractively priced investment for any EVA hot melt binding in the same machine. The semi-automatic PUREVA SMART meets the demands of customers who want the speed and consistency that automation brings for longer runs.

10

Minuteman’s PUREVA operator is impressed with the NEO’s new cartridge glue mechanism which he says is quickly and easily changed. “We are using PUR glue because it is stronger and gives a better quality but it is good to have the EVA facility if we need it. It also has a paper grain opening microcut roughener which opens the paper grain with little noise and almost no paper dust to increases glue penetration for better binding strength.” It has a speed of one to three books a minute with a min/max binding thickness of 0.1 -45mm and a binding length of up to 455mm and a height of 140/320mm. They also purchased the Casematic A46Z semiautomated cover maker. The automation makes the operator’s work more accurate and covers

and cases can be produced quickly with no set up time. “It will give us opportunities to produce a range of new products but initially we are concentrating on learning how to make soft books on the PUREVA NEO. Ashgate installed the equipment very quickly after we placed the order. Now they are helping us to make samples for our customers and are always available on the phone to give advice. We have just produced the first order for a batch of books made from FSE, recycled stock which matches our ethos to reduce the carbon footprint. The quality is very good and we look forward to developing this new venture with a variety of soft and hardback books which meet our customer’s needs and aspirations.” www.ashgate.co.uk

The new application promises to strengthen Domino’s service capabilities, with customers looking to benefit from quick and efficient production line fixes, reducing the need for onsite visits. “Uptime and overall equipment efficiency are of the utmost importance to our customers – when unplanned downtime is due to coding and marking equipment, it can be both costly and frustrating for them,” says Eddie Storan, Head of Global Service at Domino. “As coding typically sits towards the end of the production line, a faulty system can have a huge impact through wasted stock and rework, with the added commercial and brand risk of product recalls and punitive fines.” “We realised the value of AR in enabling our customers to manage both simple and complex cases, reducing the need for in-house skills and competencies,” says Saverio Barbero Lodigiani, Group Service Project Manager at Domino. With SafeGuard AR, our experts can work with our customers, OEM partners or even Domino service engineers to manage complex installations, check line performance, and – crucially – identify and fix problems with machinery as and when they arise.” Collaborating with customers in this way allows service engineers to gain a better understanding of a problem than afforded by traditional phone support. When possible, a customer can be guided to safely implement a fix themselves, or, in cases necessitating a site visit, an engineer can be dispatched with a thorough understanding of the issue and equipped with all necessary materials to rectify the problem. In this way, SafeGuard AR helps to increase first time fix rate, and dramatically decrease case resolution time.

“At Domino, we are committed to continuously improving our expertise to provide fast and efficient support to our customers,” continues Storan. “This is dependent not just on our products and solutions, but also on the quality and technical capability of our global service organisation. With SafeGuard AR in conjunction with Domino Cloud, we are able to offer a higher level of support which in turn provides additional customer value in terms of reduced downtime and improved production efficiency.” Though already in development at the time, the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated both the completion of the SafeGuard AR application and the full programme of testing by customers. The virtual aspect of the application was particularly useful in overcoming limitations on site visits by service engineers during the global lockdown. Following its success, Domino is now able to offer the service to customers in all regions. NEW IMAGEPERFECT™ ADHESIVE VINYLS FROM SPANDEX Spandex, the supplier of innovative solutions to the sign, graphics and display industries, is increasing the choice of self-adhesive coloured vinyls it offers customers, with a comprehensive new range of ImagePerfect products optimised for indoor and outdoor promotional applications. The new launch includes two products: IP 3200 Promotional Gloss vinyls with permanent adhesive, and IP 3300 Promotional Matt vinyls with removable adhesive. New ImagePerfect™ 3200 and IP 3300 ranges of coloured self-adhesive vinyls from Spandex are suitable for flat surface applications including short term signage, window graphics, retail graphics, fleet graphics, exhibition graphics, information boards and menus, and wall graphics. Each product is available in 50 popular colours. The IP 3200 Promotional Gloss range offers an extended choice of the bright primary colours that are favourites for signage. In contrast, the IP 3300 Promotional Matt palette incorporates additional grey and brown shades and more pastel options, reflecting customer preferences for more subtle colours for applications such as removable wall graphics. A colour match service is also available for these products. All IP 3200 and IP 3300 coloured products are durable for three years. The black and white films in the range are available in both gloss and matt, with a choice of either permanent or removable adhesive, and offer extended five year durability. The new ImagePerfect 3200 and ImagePerfect 3300 products incorporate the same high quality film layer as the popular intermediate IP 3500 series, while using an advanced water based adhesive system and a high quality liner. Together, these deliver an affordable product with excellent cutting and weeding properties, and all the performance qualities needed for promotional or decorative applications with a shorter lifespan. The water based adhesive has been formulated by ImagePerfect

12

specifically for these new products. It enables wet application without the milky residue that installers often experience when working with films that use conventional water-based adhesives. Stefano Nigrone, Director of ImagePerfect, comments: “Demand for affordable vinyls for everyday short term promotional applications is consistently strong. With the expectation that activity in retail and events will begin to recover as we move into Spring 2021, this is likely to accelerate. We’re ready to support customers with over 100 new ImagePerfect coloured films that really hit the spot in terms of value and choice, and can outperform many alternatives in this category when it comes to application.” The new IP 3200 Promotional Gloss and IP 3300 Promotional Matt vinyls are available in all standard roll widths, with next day delivery for orders over one metre. USING A LITTLE INTELLIGENCE

Artificial Intelligence has become a watchword for the modern world. Martin Christie suggests that AI is promoted as the magic ingredient to solve any sort of complex problem but is equally condemned as the cause of many others.

O

f course, both are equally true, but it’s not entirely the fault of the process itself. If you assume without question that it is the solution, then there will be times when you are right and times when you are wrong. If you punch away at numbers on a calculator without the basic knowledge of how they should add up on your fingers, it’s no surprise that a couple of extra noughts make no difference to the result. It all comes down to using the most sophisticated analytical tool so far created — the human brain. Coupled to a highresolution twin-lens scanning ability and an unrivalled data bank of experience, it’s a formidable operating system — but only if you choose to use it. Those grey storage cells contain more than the temporary memories of a single human lifetime, but also instincts and reactions deeply embedded that are the product of thousands of years of evolution and proven by the simplest evidence of all — survival. Back when our ancestors roamed the savannah looking for game, they had to decide whether that vague stripey shape in the long grass was an antelope or a sabre-toothed tiger. And there wasn’t a lot of time to study a reference library of similar shapes deep in the archives or pause while the options were calculated. If they called it wrong, then they probably weren’t going to be our ancestors anyway. If they made the right choice, then that little piece of knowledge will be added to the general human gene pool and the seed that has been carried through the centuries. We may not face too many tigers these days, but the number of decisions and the speed at which answers are required have forced us to rely on the machines to do most of the calculations. But calculating is one thing, assuming another, and machine learning, around which most AI is based, makes many assumptions. Because you did something yesterday, you will likely do it again today. And while that may be predictably likely in your daily routine, it leaves some pretty big margins for error, most importantly the random and the creative. It cannot expect the unexpected, which, however improbable, must be the answer as Sherlock Holmes observed. It isn’t intended to be a condemnation of AI or even a very accurate description. Still, just a rough comparison of learning curves illustrates its potential limitations and introduces that little piece of scepticism vital to put it in context in a professional environment. Rely on it without question at your peril. Facial recognition is a good example of something it is struggling with, but humans are second nature. More than half of our basic communication between each other is by nonverbal expression — how we read each other’s faces, whether familiar or strange. There are about a dozen basic modes, but then many more, possibly hundreds of other combinations that transmit feelings, emotions and intent. Whether we know them all from birth or learn to react to them by experience is one of those nature or nurture debates that divides even the experts. 14

Super Resolution

Despite the fantasy views of crime show experts that can pick out precise features from a distant foggy face, would you really trust AI to decide whether that smile is one of someone who wants to make friends with you or that of a homicidal maniac who wants to bash your head in? We actually recognise familiar features in people long before we can read their face — their walk and their mannerisms are all deeply embedded in our awareness, perhaps, at times, when it was important to recognise a fellow tribe member from a potential enemy. More recently, experiments in psychology have, in fact, shown that we are prewired to spot certain features and shapes relevant to our lives, even ones that turn out to be only an illusion. This self-preservation mechanism may have helped us flee from a possible tiger, but it may also encourage some people to see the apparition of baby Jesus in a slice of toast or the bark of a tree. It may even contribute to that curious sixth sense where we can sometimes sense the presence of a being without actually seeing them. So ghosts, they would argue, are just the products of an overly anxious imagination. Whatever the evidence, there is no question that purely human intelligence is extremely sophisticated in combining stored knowledge and experience with both perception and anticipation to make judgements. Artificial intelligence tries to mimic this, but for the present, giant leaps of inspiration are beyond its inevitably incremental way of thinking. Possibly that is just as well in cases where we rely on it not to stray too far from the facts. Certainly, for the moment, there is no danger of a computer creating truly great art, even if it can often win at chess.

SUPER RESOLUTION

All of which brings us nicely to a more in-depth review of Adobe’s much-heralded Super Resolution in its last Photoshop update, mentioned last month. It utilises the company’s own AI process it calls Sensei, which I find a little curious as it is a martial arts term meaning teacher, rather than student, which would much more match its adaptive learning curve. The first impression is that it seems to work very well, doubling or quadrupling the pixel quota of a digital file. But of course, first impressions are as deceptive as digital data themselves, and it would be fair to say Super Res has had a mixed reception now we MAY 2021 • QUICK PRINT PRO

PIXEL PROPHET have had time to put it into practice in the real world rather than the virtual one. Many initial reviews were very favourable, but as another pundit pointed out, many of them simply copied the official Adobe release and perfect visual examples. Given a little more time to try less than ideal images, even fans of Photoshop were forced to agree that the intelligent learning curve still had something to learn. The major issue seems to be that it is a totally automated action. Select an image, press a button, and the programme magically does it for you. There is no scope for any human intervention or individual adjustment to adapt to different content or preferred quality of output. And there are times when this is rather important, particularly if outputting print, which is surely one of the main reasons for wanting to increase the size of a file that can otherwise be easily viewed on a small screen. Regular readers will know I am not a natural proponent of automation. I can just about accept driving a car with an automatic gearbox, but the thought of being trapped in a self-driving vehicle makes my skin crawl. It is not that I am against progress, but it has to be measured and tempered with human qualities, which have, after all, had more years of research and development than electronic connections despite their often obvious flaws. We’ve had magic bullets to enhance digital images since the early days of digital cameras when a couple of megapixels was as much as you got. These days even a basic mobile phone can match that quota, but it wasn’t a problem when file transfer and display was equally limited. The issue is that the image captured has a pixel count limited by the device that took it. The only way you can make it bigger is by artificially increasing the number of pixels, filling in the gaps with comparable pixels that will blend in to form a new enlarged one. How the software compares pixels and decides on the options is the crucial equation. There is no one fix that suits all. As printers, we know instinctively that an image printed in a magazine needs to be pretty sharp even if it’s small when published, but a poster viewed from some distance doesn’t need to be so crisp. It all depends on the content and the context. Most early software concentrated on sharpening the often soft digital images, increasing the contrast between one pixel and the other, for example. Any enhancing process has to do something similar otherwise, the enlargement will only be a simple clone instead of twice as good. The problem is that without any attention to detail, it may just enhance flaws in the original rather than mask them out. It seems to be at the heart of most of the critique of Super Resolution in that while it is a simple, one-click solution, it does not work as well on some images as others, and as you don’t have any control over its actions, there’s no margin for fine-tuning. Photoshop Sharpening Tools

Nik Sharpener Pro

SUPER SHARPENING TOOLS

Photoshop already has several filter options for sharpening if you know how to use them, as well as options in image sizing, which work pretty well. In fact, old hands like us will have learnt a basic rule of taking an image up 108% at a time to the required dimensions so as not to put too much strain on the pixel punching all at once. And in RAW filter, there are some really good tools for improving texture and clarity, as well as balancing sharpness with controlling any noise or colour aberration that results. The same tools are available in Lightroom as well as most other photo editing alternatives these days. The only issue is that they take a little time to learn and to use. Super Resolution is easy because anyone can apply it without any extra training, but it is by no means instant, being very memory hungry, so the results may not be worth the wait. I think most of us are looking for improvements in the control panel as it updates and migrates to Lightroom as it certainly will in future upgrades. Otherwise, it’s very much a case of trial and error until you can judge by eye what will work and what won’t, and given the sometimes obscure content of digital files, that’s not always that obvious. That’s why opinion seems to be very much divided, depending on varied results. I’ve been using Nik software as a plugin for many years now. Its image sharpening filter is a good example of a comprehensive control panel that allows you to adjust to how it’s going to be printed and how it’s going to be viewed, and individual detail that can be previewed and altered to suit. Options like this may take a bit more time but have far more predictable results and allow the imposition of a lot more human intuition rather than computer speculation. 15

PEOPLE IN PRINT

JEREMY CROSSLEY RETURNS TO ACA Jeremy (Jes) Crossley has returned to print finishing after a 20 year stint with Heidelberg UK as a post-press specialist and sales representative. He has joined comprehensive print finishing and packaging converter ACA as Business Development Manager. ACA offers in the region of 70 different finishing processes and, being based adjacent to Glasgow airport and the M8, distributes to a UK wide market. Currently 60% of its work is from Scotland, 40% from the rest of the UK but with expansion in mind it believes the split will be nearer 50-50 in the next three years. “In my role with Heidelberg I have worked with print and packaging companies in the north of England and Scotland. I had called on ACA regularly

over the last 20 years and was impressed when the £6.5m management buyout took place in 2016, backed by Royal Bank of Scotland,” says Jes Crossley. “It was clear that this company wanted to push forward, that it was eager to double its turnover to £8m and that it was willing to invest in the equipment and people to make that happen.” Jes spent the first 22 years of his career in print finishing across a wide range of equipment and with departmental management roles. He is happy to return to the trade and to continue his relationship with a growing number of print and packaging companies in the UK. Dara Changizi, director of ACA, says: “I knew Jes when he was at Heidelberg and went to some open houses. I could see that print and packaging firms gravitated to him and that they (and I) would listen to him because he didn’t waste your time but added to your knowledge. He will be respected by our customers because of that approach.” www.aca.ltd

COVER STORY

TAKING CENTRE STAGE AT VIRTUAL.DRUPA

MIMAKI 100 SERIES

Mimaki Europe exhibited its broad portfolio of cutting edge digital print technologies at the first ever virtual.drupa in April and the company’s brand new “100 Series” took centre stage on its interactive virtual stand alongside brand new additions to its powerful product portfolio, unveiled at the event.

I

n line with the event’s goal to help the industry keep in contact, grow their networks and generate leads in today’s challenging times, Mimaki used virtual. drupa to demonstrate its latest business enhancing digital printing solutions and to highlight numerous application opportunities. Mimaki’s distributor for the UK and Ireland, Hybrid Services, confirmed the availability of the three new models that comprise the current 100 Series line-up; all engineered to deliver high performance at an entry-level cost. Including solvent, LED UV and dye sublimation printers, the 1.6m wide models all offer impressive ease of use coupled with high quality output. Featured on this issue’s cover, the Mimaki JV100-160 solvent printer incorporates a number of features found in Mimaki’s higher end, high production models that help deliver quality solvent printing at an entry-level price. Mimaki’s established core technologies promote ease of use, and with the possibility of loading an 8 colour inkset, high quality output is readily achieved. “The new JV100-160 incorporates Mimaki’s significant solvent printing knowhow in a competitively priced package,” says Hybrid’s 20

head of marketing and business development, Duncan Jefferies. “Companies planning on introducing or upgrading existing wide format outdoor durable capabilities will find everything they need in an easy to use system, which includes Mimaki’s RIP package, a powered take-up unit for unattended printing and a comprehensive two year warranty.” The second of the three new machines is the UJV100-160 which uses the latest in Mimaki’s long line of proven LED UV curing ink technologies to print to a huge range of substrates including vinyl, banner, paper and polyester lightbox material. Incorporating a bright, dense white ink for creating vibrant window graphics on clear materials or for printing to coloured or metallic substrates, the new 1.6m printer offers high productivity with instantly dry ink that’s ready to finish, fit or ship straight from the machine. The last of the new models is the TS100-1600 dye sub printer, that offers businesses a low cost route into dye sublimation printing. With increasing demand and opportunity in this area (thanks in part to a thriving personalisation and home décor market) the new model offers an economical printing solution for fashion, soft signage, home & interior, sportswear, and other sublimated products.

As part of the company’s long term commitment to drive innovation in the digital printing space, Mimaki also introduced two brand new printing platforms at virtual. drupa: a pair of high end production flatbed LED UV printers and a wide format solution for printing to natural and artificial leather. Mimaki’s experts were also on hand to provide an insight into the company’s full colour 3D printing technology and relevant application opportunities. “By showing our extensive portfolio of cutting edge technologies at virtual.drupa, we aimed to demonstrate our clear commitment to the industry. Leveraging our flexibility, forward thinking approach, and R&D expertise, we are able to adapt quickly to market changes and address new customer opportunities to deliver constant system improvements or brand new innovations,” concludes Danna Drion, Senior Marketing Manager, Mimaki EMEA. “The ‘100 Series’ excels when it comes to efficiency and high quality, while also offering flexibility to produce a wide array of applications. Further to that, the new additions unveiled at the show break new boundaries in their market segments.” For more information about the Mimaki product range, visit www.hybridservices.co.uk

SUSTAINABILITY

EPSON

SUSTAINABILITY: THE HEART OF OUR FUTURE The pandemic has given us a glimpse of a different future that places sustainable practices at the heart of operations. Daniel Quelch, Sustainability Manager, Epson UK says decreased traffic volumes have improved air quality and reduced noise pollution.

R

emote working has created a more agile and flexible workforce furthering discussions on the right work/life balance. Changes have been accelerated in customer behaviour and expectations around what constitutes a sustainable, technologically enabled company. We wanted to learn more about the appetite for sustainable initiatives so, with research company B2B International, we surveyed more than 4,000 employees across 26 countries as part of the Epson Sustainable Working Environment Index 2021. The results were encouraging. We found three quarters of employees wanted to see more focus on environmental and social issues, post-COVID. These findings mirrored those from pollster IPSOS Mori. 65% of its respondents believed climate change should be prioritised in the economic recovery following the pandemic. This is something we have been aware for a long time but the figures confirm why we are committed to addressing and improving every aspect of our global footprint, from manufacturing and distribution, to resource use and the behaviours of our people. We are always looking for new ways to be indispensable to our customers who similarly share our commitment to a better environment. We listen to them and work together to push the boundaries of what can be achieved. We collaborate and create products or sharing solutions that serve a real social purpose and exceed expectations. This includes developing increasingly sustainable technologies and responsible ways of working. And, as all our components are produced in Epson-owned factories, we can better guarantee the sustainability of our products at every stage of the product lifecycle, from design and manufacturing to transport, usage and recycling. The increased desire for sustainability highlighted by the surveys is also encouraging companies to make positive changes throughout their operations. For Epson this includes the significant progress made in 2020 towards aligning our business activities to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Integrated into our mid and longterm plans, they are guiding us and are setting the direction for all our sustainability actions. 22

“…as all our components are produced in Epson-owned factories, we can better guarantee the sustainability of our products at every stage of the product lifecycle, from design and manufacturing to transport, usage and recycling.” We also recently set out our plans in our Environmental Vision 2050 statement. It includes our commitment to becoming carbon negative and underground resource-free by 2050. We will achieve this by reducing the environmental impact of products and services. In supply chains we will deliver sustainability in a circular economy by advancing the frontiers of industry through creative, open innovation, and contributing to international environmental initiatives. And, by 2023, we are planning for all of Epson’s worldwide group sites to meet their electricity needs from 100% renewable energy. This is something we are already achieving in the UK. These aims follow a number of exciting achievements we are very proud of, such as our

EcoVadis Platinum rating for sustainability that places us in the top 1% of companies in our industry. It confirms we meet the highest standards for human rights, labour conditions, environment, ethics and sustainable procurement. We have also saved a potential 1.1 million tonnes of plastic-based consumables through the sale of over 50 million cartridge-free EcoTank printers and recycled 23,700 tonnes of material including batteries, paper, wood, plastic and waste electrical equipment. As we enter an extended period of recovery, it is clear accountable and transparent sustainable choices will be vital to business success. ANTALIS CUSTOMERS PROTECT THREATENED FOREST Thanks to the support of its customers, Antalis has balanced through the World Land Trust, 7,350 tonnes of CO2, protecting 1,190 acres of critically threatened tropical forest. Antalis began its support of the World Land Trust in December 2015 after recognising the need to take positive action to help combat the world’s climate crisis. Over the last five years, the company has developed its scheme to make it easier for customers to participate in carbon balancing. Antalis’ Carbon Balanced Paper scheme is a simple way for customers to balance the carbon emissions of their office paper and printed communications while enhancing the sustainability credentials of their brand. Customers can now choose to offset any paper and board they purchase from Antalis’ ranges. The creative paper ranges, from Arjowiggins, are also already supplied fully carbon balanced as standard — a real key differentiator for clients and end users, and a demonstration of the commitment and partnership Antalis has with the WLT. Users of Carbon Balanced Paper can receive a certificate from World Land Trust quantifying the carbon offset and area of land preserved. Furthermore, they can print the World Land Trust Carbon Balanced Paper logo as mark of their commitment and Corporate Responsibility. Katie Farr, Marketing & Communications Manager at Antalis commented: “Working with our customers to develop sustainable practices for our industry is hugely important to us and we’re

delighted with the interest and support customers have shown for our carbon offsetting scheme through the World Land Trust. These latest figures, presenting our total achievement since joining the scheme on 1st December 2015, demonstrate the significant positive impact of our joint actions.” Carbon balancing paper and board is achieved through the preservation of ecologically important standing forests that are under real and imminent threat of clearance, locking in carbon that would otherwise be released and securing continued absorption of CO2 from the atmosphere. The World Land Trust is an international conservation charity that protects the world’s most biologically significant and threatened habitats acre by acre. Dan Bradbury, Director of Communications

and Development, World Land Trust, says, “Antalis’ continued commitment to the Carbon Balanced Paper programme has made a huge impact on our conservation efforts in Vietnam, one of the most biologically diverse countries on Earth. Khe Nuoc Trong is essential habitat for 40 globally threatened species, including Southern White-Cheeked Gibbon, Crested Argus and the Red Shanked Douc, one of the world’s most endangered monkeys. The support of Antalis and its customers enables World Land Trust to continue to preserve these incredible habitats, protecting the species living within them, and keeping the carbon locked in.” Visit: http://bit.ly/antalis-carbon-offsetting for more information about Antalis’ carbon balancing scheme

ECLIPSE BECOMES CERTIFIED CARBON BALANCED Go Inspire Eclipse, a division of Go Inspire Group, has become the largest certified Carbon Balanced commercial printer in the UK to date. A Carbon Balanced Printer is a printing company that has measured and balanced the annual impacts of its fossil fuel usage, vehicle emissions and electricity consumption. In the process of certification, these impacts are third party verified, and then balanced with international conservation charity World Land Trust (WLT) (Charity No. 1001291). As a Carbon Balanced commercial printer, Go Inspire Eclipse will help World Land Trust to save, protect and restore 448 acres of critically threatened habitat and, in doing so, lock up 2,588 tonnes of carbon. Go Inspire Eclipse has become the largest commercial printer in the country to offer customers Carbon Balanced Print, where both the paper and the printing process have been offset with World Land Trust. Brands choosing Carbon Balanced Print will be issued with certificates and the highly visible World Land Trust logo to proudly use on their printed material. Simon Moore, Managing Director, Go Inspire

26

Eclipse, comments, “Having deployed a raft of different initiatives around sustainable paper products, energy efficiency and plastic usage reduction, we were looking for a scheme that would not only sequester carbon as an offset for our resulting footprint, but also make a measurable contribution to biodiversity and habitat preservation. Now, as a Carbon Balanced Printer, we are helping global conservation charity World Land Trust preserve critically threatened habitat in Vietnam. This not only offsets our carbon footprint, but it also helps protect the dozens of endangered species calling these forests home.” Patrick Headley, Group CEO at Go Inspire, adds, “This is a really important scheme that goes far beyond simple carbon offsetting, and

we are proud to support it. At Go Inspire, we have operated a wide ranging ESG agenda long before it became common parlance. With this latest move, we are continuing our aspiration to be at the forefront of corporate citizenship in our industry — something that our clients notice, recognise and appreciate. Nor will we stop here — any environmental policy worth pursuing is a living and developing picture where further enhancements are always possible.” Dan Bradbury, Director of Communications and Development, World Land Trust, concludes, “By becoming a Carbon Balanced Printer, Go Inspire Eclipse will make a significant contribution to our conservation efforts in Vietnam, one of the most biologically diverse countries on Earth. Khe Nuoc Trong is essential habitat for 40 globally threatened species, including the Southern White-Cheeked Gibbon, Crested Argus and the Red Shanked Douc, one of the world’s most endangered monkeys. The support of Go Inspire Eclipse and its clients will help us continue to preserve these incredible habitats, protect the species living within them, and keep the carbon locked in.” www.goinspire.co.uk

MPS GETS COMFY WITH UPHOLSTERY PRINTED ON HP STITCH

Manchester Print Services (MPS) has installed a second HP Stitch digital textile printer specifically for the production of upholstery for corporate customers. The new HP Stitch S500 was installed at MPS’s Middleton premises, alongside its existing HP Stitch S1000. The 64” (1.6m) HP Stitch S500 uses digital dye sublimation technology to achieve rich, accurate colours on both transfer paper and direct to fabric at high speeds, ideal for applications including fashion and sportswear, soft signage and décor products. MPS was one of the first businesses in the UK to install the 126” (3.2m) HP Stitch S1000 for the production of textile displays, which it still runs along with an HP DesignJet Z6200 and an HP Latex 360. It replaced a dye sublimation printer from another brand when MPS agreed a major customer contract. “We secured a big project spanning four years,” explains Lee Egan, Director, Manchester Print Services. “Our dye sublimation printer from another manufacturer wasn’t quick enough and didn’t have the colour matching capabilities we needed. The project includes printing one corporate colour across approximately 4,500 panels and the colour has to be consistent, from day one to several years from now, so we needed the confidence provided by the HP Stitch.” With high speed dye sublimation now established at MPS, in spring 2020 the company bought into Charlton Fabrics, a manufacturer of upholstery for contract furnishing customers including bars, restaurants and cruise ships. MPS’s involvement brought more printing in-house and helped Charlton Fabrics to expand, but further growth needed more printing power. Lee explains: “We wanted a new textile printer to work exclusively on the upholstery work, reserving the HP Stitch S1000 for mostly printing graphics. The new HP Stitch S500 printer was installed in the summer of 2020 and according to Lee Egan: “Investing in another HP Stitch gives us colour consistency; the Stitch system is also very user friendly with quality built into its design.” While several of MPS’s key markets including exhibitions, retail and hospitality continue to be affected by COVID-19 and related restrictions, Lee says MPS has recovered thanks to its diversification. “From March to May 2020, work was practically non-existent, but we were busy again from July onwards, as luckily we work across a lot of different sectors. In fact, having a pause in production gave us some time to grow into other areas. For instance, the HP Stitch printers are compatible with any polyester fabric, besides the fire-retardant fabric we use for upholstery, so we’re looking at other opportunities.” MPS has recently released 25 new designs for upholstery for the hospitality sector and made home décor samples available to furnishing shops to reach independent customers. www.hp.com

NEW PROFIT CENTRE

LEVERAGING THE ‘RENEWED RELATIONSHIP WITH TOUCH’ Prepress partner to the label and packaging print sector, Creation Reprographics, has shared insight on the refreshed role of touch in packaging design, indicating where the biggest growth opportunities may lie for brand owners. The business, which partners with packaging printers and converters to deliver high quality reprographic services and outstanding shelf appeal, highlights the resurging power of ‘haptic marketing’ as the FMCG sector begins to settle back to normality. Matt Francklow, Managing Director at Creation, said: “Across the vast FMCG sector, brand owners are looking for the consumer trends that can unlock growth. What we are seeing is a renewed relationship with touch. As a result of the pandemic, we’ve become a very ‘hands-off’ population, but one unexpected outcome of this is a brand-new opportunity to reconnect with consumers through specialist packaging finishes and coatings. “’Haptic Marketing’ — the art of using touch to convey a branding message — isn’t new, but the consumer is becoming a lot more tactile in product purchases, because so much of our time is now spent actively avoiding physical contact elsewhere. Holding a pack in their hands might seem an inert action, but it’s helping shoppers subconsciously evaluate the product and forms part of the overall

brand value proposition. Naturally, a premium finish helps to build a stronger case for the product, and retail competition is intense, it can make all the difference to sales. “We are definitely seeing brands exploring the benefits of specialist coatings on a much bigger scale, in an effort to engage with today’s consumer. New tactile finishes such as soft touch, rough texture and paper feel, along with matte and gloss coating combinations, integration of hot and cold foiling and clever use of spot varnishes, are all proving to be a real hit. We are expecting this uptick to continue and accelerate through the year.” Matt believes that the renewed focus on tactile finishes is one of the reasons rotary screen printing is seeing an uplift in interest and application. “It’s easy to see why rotary screen printing is capturing attention again. Delivering the faster production rates required for today’s high-volume

FMCG demands, it can also be used on a variety of different print materials. Due to the consistently great finish it delivers, screens are particularly useful for big orders – something which is becoming more important for many converters in the current retail climate. Rotary screen printing excels in terms of tactile print that engages the senses, perfectly suited to raised characters or embossing. “We have seen a significant increase in demand for our range of Kocher & Beck rotary screens, which enable high speed print runs and ensure consistent quality, accuracy and registration over long runs. The high definition, pre-coated screens are made of a nickel plated stainless steel material and coated with photopolymer. They’re incredibly versatile, suitable for a wide range of materials and all common tasks, and can be produced in either roll form, sheets cut to size or completely imaged and mounted.” Matt concluded “It’s time for the packaging sector to finally look beyond Covid-19 and discover new tactile finishes that offer texture and depth to provide fresh value for brand owners and printers alike. The consumer is getting more ‘hands on’ again in stores, which means a finish that conveys quality and boosts the value proposition has a key commercial role to play. Haptic marketing is back on the agenda for FMCG brand owners, and specialist inks, coatings and finishes demonstrate how easy it can be to engage the senses.” www.creation-repro.com

MIMAKI LAUNCHES INNOVATIVE SOLUTION FOR PREMIUM LEATHER PRINTING MARKET Mimaki has announced the launch of the Mimaki SUJV-160 — a new high quality inkjet printer designed to realistically reproduce prints whilst retaining the look and texture of natural and artificial leather. Available in the UK and Ireland this summer, the new wide format solvent UV inkjet printer sports a print width of 1,610mm, making it ideal for decorating leather fashion accessories, furniture and even car interiors. The new solution is the result of two market leaders’ ingenuity and cutting edge technology – Mimaki’s print expertise and Fujifilm’s UVIQUE ink technology. The SU200 thin film solvent UV ink, developed by Fujifilm and exclusively sold by Mimaki, provides outstanding flexibility, stretchability, and superior scratch resistance on natural and artificial leather. This results in the retention of texture and feel of the material after printing, and the ability to boost productivity by instantly switching to postprocessing without any drying time. Bert Benckhuysen, Senior Product Manager at Mimaki Europe, comments, “Mimaki is committed to continued innovation, and adapting in tandem with the evolving needs of print businesses using inkjet, and this new model is a perfect example of that. The Mimaki SUJV-160 takes a previously

30

challenging process, printing onto leather, and makes it straightforward and efficient, while simultaneously ensuring the end product retains the look and feel of the base material. This printer is the product of listening and responding to customer demands, world class engineering, and exceptional originality. Add the Fujifilm developed SU200 ink into the mix, and the SUJV-160 is an investment that is sure to give your business a competitive advantage.”

The blend of these innovative print and ink technologies makes the system ideal for a range of high end applications; for the fashion sector, the SUJV-160 can produce bags, shoes, or personalised team sporting goods, interior décor applications including floor mats and sofas, and cars and motorcycle seats can be printed, and users can also carry out in-mould resin decoration. Mimaki is exclusively distributed in the UK and Ireland by Hybrid Services and the company’s Managing Director, Brett Newman acknowledges the opportunities the new printer offers, “Mimaki’s already broad print capabilities have been further expanded by the development of the new SUJV-160 which delivers an impressive solution for companies looking to print onto natural and artificial leather.” Benckhuysen concludes, “With interest in luxury goods on the rise, statement leather pieces for fashion, interiors, and other premium markets that are easily customisable, durable, and visually appealing will only become more sought after. For print businesses targeting this lucrative opportunity, the Mimaki SUJV-160 can deliver on all these criteria and more.” www.hybridservices.co.uk

THE JOKE’S ON YOU

READERS’ SCRIBES

SOMETHING TO SHARE? A GOLF CLUB WALKS INTO A BAR

SLEEP MORE SOUNDLY

A golf club walks into a local bar and asks the barman for a pint of beer. The barman refuses to serve him. “Why not?” asks the golf club. “You’ll be driving later,” replies the bartender.

Q: As people age, do they sleep more soundly? A: Yes, but usually in the afternoon.

NIGHT THEFT

Someone broke into my garage last night and took a bunch of stuff, including my limbo stick! Seriously, how low can you go?

THE BIG MOUNT EVEREST I built a model of Mount Everest. My son asked, “Is it to scale?” I replied, “No... it’s to look at.”

NEEDING GLASSES

“You need glasses,” the eye doctor said. “I’m already wearing glasses,” replied the patient.

THE SKYDIVING INSTRUCTOR

I went skydiving today for the first time. This guy strapped himself to me, we jumped out of the plane As we plummeted he said, “So how long have you been an instructor?”

A BREATH OF FRESH AIR

TALLBOY STORY

I sat in my hair stylist’s chair and said, “Make me look sexy!” She then got drunk.

The CEO of IKEA was just elected president in Sweden. He should have his cabinet together by the end of the week.

A lorry loaded with Vick’s VapoRub overturned on the motorway.

POST LOCKDOWN HAIRCUT

WEIGHT ISSUES

BEWARE NOT PARTICULARLY PC

I bought some new perfume for my girlfriend last week. It smells of breadcrumbs. The birds love it.

Patient: Doctor, I have a tendency to gain weight in certain places. What would you recommend? Doctor: Stay out of those places!

OPERATION CHECK, PLEASE

JOB SEARCH TOP TIP

COOKING KALE

I was dismayed this afternoon when my wife told me my six-year-old son wasn’t actually mine. She then said I need to pay more attention at school pick up.

Doctor: “Would you have the money if I said you needed an operation?” Patient: “Would you say I needed an operation if you thought I didn’t have the money?”

At a job Interview... “What are your strengths?” “I take matters in my own hands.” “Okay, thank you. We will contact you.” “No, I will contact you.”

FOR THE KIDS

Pro tip: if you add coconut oil to your kale. It makes it easier to scrape it into the bin.

DID YOU ENJOY THE FILM?

A man finished baby-proofing his house and his wife says, “Aw, honey, I thought you said you didn’t want to have kids?” He responds, “I don’t. Let’s see them get in now.”

Not a lot of people know this.

Two goats wandered into the junkyard and had a field day. One of them spent a particularly long time bent over a spool of film. When he was finished, the other goat came over. “So, did you enjoy the film?” The goat replied, “To tell you the truth, I liked the book better.”

The inventor of the umbrella was…

STOP DRINKING

My doctor has advised me to stop drinking. It’s going to be a massive change for me. I’ve been with that doctor for 15 years.

JOSH WHO?

My daughter called me at work to say I had received a call from “Josh” at the bank regarding my account. I called my my bank, the operator asked what Josh’s last name was. I explained that he hadn’t left his last name. Then she asked for his department, and I said that I didn’t know that either. “There are 1500 employees in this building, sir” she told me rather sharply. So I asked her for her name. “Danielle,” she said. “And your last name?” I asked. “Sorry,” she replied, “we’re not allowed to give last names.”

SCRUMMY CHINESE FOOD

The Harvard School of Medicine did a study of why women like Chinese food so much. The study revealed that this is due to the fact that ‘Won Ton’ spelled backward is ‘Not Now’.

WITH THIS RING

A girl went to a palmist to have her hand read. “I see that you are in love with a tall man with a front tooth missing,” the palmist said to her. “That’s right,” was the reply. “I see that he has ask you to marry him and his name is Bill Jones,” the palmist said. “That’s marvelous,” said the girl. “How can you tell that from the lines on my hand?” “It’s not the lines I am reading,” the palmist said, “It’s the ring you are wearing. I gave it back to Bill two weeks ago.”

CATS CAN’T PLAY GAMES

Why are cats so bad at video games? Because they can only press paws.
