Image-ine yourself at Rio World Cup BUYERS and resellers of Image, Antalis’s own brand range of office papers, could find themselves at the FIFA World Cup 2014 final in Brazil thanks to a new, interactive Europe-wide competition. The ‘Image Yourself’ campaign has been launched by Antalis to support a new drive to promote its own-brand range of office papers. This includes the introduction of new packaging designed to ensure the brand maintains a high level of visual appeal, whilst the product information remains easily accessible. The Image paper range has also been given a further boost by the introduction of Image Coloraction, an addition that offers 28 colours to deliver communications with maximum impact. As part of the interactive ‘Image Yourself’ competition, Antalis has launched dedicated microsites for end-users and resellers, apps for Apple and Android mobile technology and a dedicated Facebook page. The incredible array of prizes for winners includes weekly and monthly opportunities to win TVs, video cameras, Ice watches, luggage and polo shirts. The top prizes include nine trips to Brazil; five one week trips for two people, three VIP trips with a ticket to one of the football World Cup Quarter Finals and the overall top prize of a VIP trip to Rio and a ticket to the 2014 World Cup Final. The ‘Image Yourself’ competition can be entered in two ways: End users can enter the competition by taking a picture of themselves with a ream of Image or a picture of a ream and sharing this photograph on the dedicated Image Yourself app, Facebook page or mini-site, http://www.imageyourself.net/ Entrants can submit up to eight photographs and can increase their chance of winning by inviting their friends to enter. Resellers of the Image range get one free entry by registering for the promotion at www.imageyourselfpartner.com where they have access to their own account. All sales of Image products are recorded and points accumulated increasing the opportunity to win prizes. The website also includes information on the Image product range as well as a

communications toolbox which allows resellers to promote the end-user photo competition to their own customers. Monthly ‘booster programmes’ will also be launched to support specific products in the Image range. “With the ‘Image Yourself’ competition, we wanted to underline our investment in the Image brand which we believe offers unique added value for end users and our reseller partners,”, explains Dan Turner, Antalis Office Papers Product Manager. “It also stems from our desire to support and even extend our Image reseller network and help them grow their business through attractive, original incentives. We look forward to seeing who the lucky winners will be!” Antalis’s own brand Image range offers the unique advantage of covering all end users business application needs (including reports, brochures, documents, letterheads) while also allowing resellers to add a multi-functional, added value brand to their product catalogue. The addition of the Image Coloraction range completes the Image family, which comprises of eight grades for an exceptionally wide variety of applications from everyday copier paper for multifunctional laser, inkjet and toner based devices to super smooth premium paper for high impact digital production presses. The range is ideal for those seeking excellent performance, value for money and impressive green credentials, as the range also boasts a series of recycled options and FSC certifications. Dan Turner adds, “The Image collection keeps going from strength to strength. After broadening the reach of the Image brand, traditionally dedicated to end users in office environments, to digital printers and copy shops with the Image Digicolor and Image Indigo ranges, the brand has added yet another string to its bow with the multi-coloured Image Coloraction.” The closing date for entries to the ‘Image Yourself’ competition is 15th June 2014. To find out more information about the Image product range, please contact Antalis on 0870 607 9014 or visit www.antalis.co.uk

Xerox celebrates the creation of Xerography WRITTEN in a bold hand on a glass slide was the date and location: 10-22-38 Astoria. The copy might have been fuzzy, but it was still a copy. In fact, it was the world’s first xerographic copy. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the first xerographic image, created by Chester Carlson in a rented second story room in Queens, N.Y. This humble invention would eventually lead to the formation of the Xerox Corporation and the birth of an industry. Even today, this xerographic process is still at the heart of most office printers and copiers around the world. Trained as a physicist and lawyer, Carlson was a serial inventor. He kept notebooks full of a wide array of inventions including a rotating billboard, raincoat with gutters and a shoe cleaning machine. In honour of his inquisitive nature and his

remarkable invention, that truly changed how business has been conducted for decades, this October Xerox is kicking off a celebration of innovation and its role in the company’s history and future. Over the next year, Xerox people will be engaged in a series of activities celebrating and imagining the future through the company intranet, web chats and social media. “Now is the time when many companies would

look back, and we certainly will, but only for a moment. The real focus of our celebration will be the future and how Xerox will continue to simplify how work gets done,” said Ursula Burns, Xerox CEO and chairman of the board. “That’s why the theme of our anniversary year is ‘The Next 75.’” Carlson’s vision at the time of his Astoria experiment was “to make office workers a little more productive and office work a little simpler and less tedious.” Xerox has changed greatly in size and scope since this time, but the basic principles have remained the same. From printers and copiers to transportation, education, and even healthcare the company’s team of engineers, scientists and researchers are continuing to invent in ways that make work, and life, a little simpler. www.xerox.co.uk

Konica Minolta launches practical workshops KONICA Minolta has announced a series of practical workshops — underpinning its commitment to the print industry and next year’s Ipex — to help printers grow their business in a rapidly changing marketplace. Up to 20 free places are available to owners/ directors at each of the five separate high quality support events that will be run by Konica Minolta in conjunction with Print Future. The key focus areas will cover business planning, production efficiency, sales and business development, and adding new services. Customer case studies and other testimonials featuring good business practice will also be part of the programme linking into Konica Minolta’s successful Digital 1234 initiatives. The details of the events were unveiled at the Young Leaders in Print European Conference in Cambridge, which offers printers training and opportunities to discuss current industry trends. The workshops launch at St Brides, London, on 12 November, followed by events at Bristol on 19 November, Nottingham on 26 November, Warrington on 3 December and will be completed in Livingston, Scotland, on 11 December. Mark Hinder, Konica Minolta’s Production Printing Market Development Manager, gave a

keynote address to delegates from across Europe at Young Leaders in Print Conference, which was run jointly by and the BPIF (British Printing Industries Federation) and Intergraf. The theme of the conference was innovation and Mr Hinder

shared Konica Minolta’s thoughts on future developments. He said: “This conference provided us with a perfect opportunity to announce a significant investment in educational programmes through our acclaimed Digital 1234 programmes that will be beneficial to printers going forward. These events will help enable printers to determine their future growth strategies and opportunities through identifying key priorities. This isn’t about investing in technology and solutions, it’s about knowing how the market will adapt and what to plan for. “In the wider context, this is also further evidence of Konica Minolta’s unwavering commitment to the print industry in the run-up to Ipex where we are so proud to be the largest single exhibitor.” BPIF Chief Executive Kathy Woodward said: “It is really positive to see the whole supply chain coming together to harness the undoubted opportunities of the quickly changing digital arena.” Details of the workshops from press@konicaminolta.co.uk, tel 01268 534444, or directly signing up by visiting: http://tiny.cc/vr2a5w

Roland DG launches ‘Roland Rental’ programme ROLAND DG UK is officially launching a wide format machine rental programme. The new programme has been specifically designed to enable SMEs, start-ups and businesses to move into wide format technology by renting a Roland printer or printer/cutter for a one, two or three year period, without the need for up front investment or financing. Available to rent are some of Roland’s most popular machines, including the market leading VersaCAMM SP-i and new VS-i series of printer/cutters and the VersaART RE-640 printer. The recently launched VersaUV LEF20 is also available within the rental scheme. Roland DG advises that customers investigate purchasing or leasing a printer from one of their network of Authorised Dealers as a first port of call. However, if a customer is struggling to secure finance or is not yet ready to commit to purchasing a device, the rental scheme provides an alternative option. James Johnson, Business Manager, RolandCare and Roland Rentals said “The new Roland Rental programme has been designed for those SMEs, start-ups and other businesses looking to ‘dip their toes’ into the wide format sector, or for those who may, for various reasons, have difficulty securing a loan to purchase capital equipment. It is also ideal for those who may require additional short-term wide format capacity or companies that desperately want to diversify, but are currently unable to commit to up front capital expenditure or investment. “Joining the Roland Rental programme is as

straight forward as choosing the right machine for the business’s needs, signing up for a one, two or three year rental contract, paying a three month deposit up front and preparing the business for wide format success,” says Mr Johnson. “The Roland Rental package includes everything a company needs to get started immediately as well as support the business throughout the entire rental period, including a full set of 220ml Roland inks, delivery and installation, a RolandCare Silver warranty for the life of the rental, VersaWorks RIP software with free updates and a place on a digital print course at the Roland DG Academy. A Roland DG Authorised Dealer will be recommended for the ongoing purchase of inks and media. “This is a very comprehensive package,” continues Mr Johnson, “and one we believe will

give the new entrant to wide format printing everything they need to quickly see a return on their investment. The Roland Rental programme will also ensure sign makers, printers and other entrepreneurs can keep up to date with the very latest printing technologies.” Concludes Mr Johnson: “At Roland, we are consistently trying to find new ways to work with customers to ensure they can take advantage of all our wide format technology has to offer. This programme could open up a whole world of new possibilities for many smaller, ambitious businesses and we are looking forward to introducing the many benefits of Roland’s technology to them.” Those interested in finding out more should call James Johnson on 0845 230 90 60 or go to www.rolanddg.co.uk/rolandrental

Epson supports RNLI photography exhibition

EPSON has produced more than 50 64-inch wide large format prints for a major RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) sea rescue photography exhibition titled The Lifeboat: Courage on our Coasts, which will be visiting major cities in the UK and Ireland. Illustrating the lifesaving work of the RNLI, the touring exhibition showcases the photographs captured by RNLI lifeboat crew member and award winning professional photographer Nigel Millard. The images on display will include dramatic shots of lifeboats in action and portraits of the charity’s dedicated volunteer crew members, lifeguards and fundraisers. “I hope the exhibition will give people a better understanding and appreciation of the RNLI’s lifesaving work, as well as helping to raise funds for the charity,” says Nigel. “The photos are a collection of ordinary people doing extraordinary things.” The exhibition will be free and accessible 24 hours a day, whatever the weather, just like the services

of the RNLI, and will visit London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Dublin, and Birmingham. Epson has had a long standing relationship with the RNLI and Nigel Millard. The large 1750mm x 1170mm outdoor exhibition prints were produced by Epson at its UK headquarters using the Epson SureColor SC-S70600, 64-inch (162.6cm), large format printer. The images were printed on Ilford’s Nanosolvent Satin 255gsm media which is ideal for outdoor applications in all weathers. The SureColor SC-S70600 uses Epson’s UltraChrome GSX ink set which is perfect for outdoor exhibitions as it is lightfast for up to three years without lamination. Available as an eight or ten colour model the printer ensures exceptional high quality prints – essential for picking out the fine details in Nigel’s close-up portraits, whilst the vivid colours and the smooth tonal gradations help to bring the dramatic sea rescue images to life. Nick White, business manager, Professional

Graphics, Epson UK, has also been an operational volunteer with the RNLI for a number of years. “I am proud that Epson continues to support the RNLI and the charity’s lifesaving work, which is essential, often difficult and sometimes dangerous,” he says. “Epson is a leader in the photographic and fine art print markets and its technology produces high resolution and the widest colour gamut which will ensure Nigel’s photography is reproduced to the highest standard.” The photographs in the exhibition have been selected from a book of Nigel’s photographs titled The Lifeboat: Courage on our Coasts, published by Conway, written by Dr Huw Lewis-Jones, with the foreword by HRH The Duke of Cambridge. Copies of the book will be available to buy at the regional exhibitions. For more information, including dates and venues of the exhibition, visit www.rnli.org/courageonourcoasts

Canon updates full Professional Print portfolio CANON has announced that it has updated its complete portfolio of professional print products. For colour production environments, the Canon imagePRESS C7011VP and C7011VPS Series, Canon’s new flagship colour production presses, offer both commercial printers and in-house print departments the latest innovations in digital print technology from Canon. Continuing to give customers a choice of popular and efficient workflow solutions, the presses incorporate new RIP technology in the form of the imagePRESS Server A7300 (powered by CREO), imagePRESS Server A3300, A2300 and A1300 (powered by EFI) and the imagePRESS PRISMAsync Server. Combined with enhancements to the imagePRESS controller, the RIPs deliver outstanding speed and print quality to boost productivity.

The new workflow solutions also extend the finishing capabilities of the Canon imagePRESS C7011VP and C7011VPS Series by making it compatible with more finishing devices, allowing customers to produce a wider range of applications and expand their service offerings. The new models feature an updated version of the innovative colour management tool, i1 Process Control, which helps achieve consistent and controlled digital colour printing, resulting in superb image quality for all printing professionals. Updated engine firmware in this new version of the successful imagePRESS family and an enhanced media catalogue, which includes new packaging and synthetic media among others, will also enable customers to consider other new applications for additional revenue and business opportunities. With the volume of digital monochrome production print output in Western Europe running at approximately 220 billion A4 pages in 2013 Canon is responding to market demand by also launching three ranges of black and

white production printers: the Canon varioPRINT 135 series. Previously known as the Océ VarioPrint DP Line, the new Canon varioPRINT 135 series (comprising the Canon varioPRINT 110, varioPRINT 120 and varioPRINT 135) continues to offer the light-mid monochrome production market the consistent quality and environmental benefits provided by the unique DirectPress, HeatXchange and EnergyLogic technologies. However, thanks to new finishing options and a new Océ PRISMAsync controller, the new Canon varioPRINT 135 series also gives customers greater application flexibility and improved productivity. In-line stacking and stapling functionality is provided by the Finisher-AK1, while the Saddle Finisher-AK2 is for those customers who require short-run, saddle-stitched booklets of up to 100 pages (25 sheets). A professional punch unit also offers the ability to punch documents with user adjustable dies. A ‘printer only’ version of the Canon varioPRINT 135 series is available for those customers who, for reasons of cost, security or copyright, do not wish to take advantage of the scanning capabilities of the new devices.

Built on the same technology platform as the Canon imagePRESS C7011VP and C7011VPS series, and providing similar levels of reliability and stability, the Canon imagePRESS 1135+ series (comprising the Canon imagePRESS 1110+, imagePRESS 1125+ and imagePRESS 1135+) is the latest range in the evolution of Canon’s mid-volume production presses. With a choice of two powerful Fiery controllers, the imagePRESS Server K100 and K200, and expanded finishing options (the Finisher-AK1 and Saddle Finisher-AK2), the Canon imagePRESS 1135+ series has been engineered to deliver consistently high image quality, enhanced productivity and the reliability required in production environments.

With the Océ VarioPrint 6000 Ultra Line having established a reputation for excellence in the high volume monochrome printing market, the new Océ VarioPrint 6000+ Lines (comprising the Océ VarioPrint 6000 Ultra+, Océ VarioPrint 6000 TP+ and Océ VarioPrint 6000 MICR+) offer improved media handling capabilities, thanks to a new paper input module (PIM-A1), to expand the flexibility of the range. The module is able to support sheets up to 350mm x 500mm in size, which will make it attractive for book printers looking to move from offset to digital. Using the optional dual paper tray can also increase the number of A4 sheets from 4,600 to 8,000, enabling customers to benefit from longer unattended printing and a wider range of applications. The VarioPrint 6000+ Lines support up to three paper input

modules, with a maximum of 24,000 sheets of input. The inclusion of the latest Océ PRISMAsync controller also ensures faster turnaround times. In addition to updating its professional print hardware portfolio, Canon is also launching version 6.1 of its Océ PRISMAprepare all in one document make ready software to offer customers greater functionality, while providing the same straightforward user experience. Océ PRISMAprepare 6.1 now features a variable data printing (VDP) function, allowing users to add variable data, including text and images, to PDF files, which is particularly useful for applications such as business cards, direct mail or personalised training manuals. Combining variable data in the make ready workflow not only improves productivity, but, more importantly, it also gives users the opportunity to enhance the value of print applications. Another new feature is a ‘hot folder’ function, which enables users to manage multiple folders at a time and also associate them with pre-designed workflow templates, shortening turnaround times and reducing errors. Océ PRISMAprepare 6.1 also enables the real time status checking of the device the print operator wants to use and, because it is based on an Adobe PDF library, it is possible to cut and paste between multiple PRISMAprepare windows. Commenting on the launch of the new portfolio, Mark Lawn, UK & European Marketing Director, Professional Print, Canon Europe, says: “With our focus firmly on how best to support our professional print customers in a constantly evolving market, we’re aware that we need to provide a portfolio of solutions that are similarly evolving. We’re therefore confident that this latest iteration of our portfolio, which centres on streamlining production, enhancing reliability and expanding finishing options, will help customers either to reinvigorate or continue to build their business.” www.canon.co.uk

DSales (UK) launches Develop multifunctionals DSALES the UK distributor for the Develop range of copier printers, has launched the Develop ineo+ 454e/554e multifunctionals designed to streamline document workflows. An intuitive operating concept, modelled on a smartphone or tablet, ensures ease of use and the customisable panel saves users lots of time in everyday document jobs. The systems deliver top quality output in colour or black and white at 45 or 55 A4 pages per minute respectively. It is in terms of productivity throughput that the ineo+ 454e/554e really score. Users can customise the operating screen for the job functions they use most regularly saving a lot of time setting up printing, copying, scanning and faxing operations. The nine inch full colour touchscreen of the operating display will feel instantly familiar to smartphone or tablet users thanks to multi-touch operations such as flick, drag and drop or pinch in and out. Users can simply finger swipe their way through the menu and will get to grips with the system in no time at all thanks to the intuitive operating concept. A newly designed menu navigation structure allows all functions to be viewed in one go, while the settings a user wants can be selected with just a few clicks. The most useful customisation feature is that frequently used functions can be left on the start screen and ones that are hardly

ever used removed. The display is as big as a tablet PC, easy to read and clearly arranged. What’s more, the sensible use of pop-ups means users will not get lost in confusing submenus. Since navigating the menu is simplicity itself users will find the machine’s printing, copying, scanning and faxing functions easy to use. With the panel customised to suit individual document production habits, such routine jobs can be done much more efficiently. When choosing a multifunctional, it is becoming increasingly important to look at its environmental credentials. Here, the ineo+ 454e/554e score on energy efficiency. They are designed specifically to minimise power consumption and tests have shown that typical weekly electricity consumption (TEC value) is very low at 2.94 WKh week for the ineo+ 454e. In addition the ineo+ 454e/554e automatically delete blank pages to avoid unnecessary printing or copying, and wasted toner and paper. Sharp offer designers intuitive working SHARP Europe has launched the 32” PNK322BH, a new generation touch display designed for creative workers who need a high resolution screen combined with capacitive touch operation. Designers who currently use multiple devices to run applications and display images can switch to the PN-K322BH for an all in one device which will let them work more intuitively, save money and increase desk space. The PN-K322BH includes Sharp’s cutting edge IGZO technology and delivers 4K Ultra HD (QFHD)resolution (3,840 × 2,160 pixels) – a level of resolution four times that of 1080p full HD. Ultra HD is suitable for displaying the most intricate and detailed graphical content such as architectural designs or high-resolution photographic images. Due to Sharp’s revolutionary IGZO technology, which makes transistors smaller than ever before, the touch screen also has improved sensitivity. This means that the screen responds with an incredibly high degree of accuracy, ideal for working on images and video. IGZO also means lower power consumption, compared to other display devices. The screen comes with a special touch pen, with an extra small 2mm tip, to make the most of the PNK322BH’s high precision touch screen. This allows users to draw fine lines, easily underline text, add notations, draw illustrations and make amendments to on screen content. The touch screen monitor is capable of recognising an impressive 10 touch points at once, greatly expanding the range of touch interface applications that can be used by CAD designers, graphic designers, creative agencies and video games developers. It also includes a clever palm cancellation feature, where the device will recognise the pen, but ignores users leaning their palms on the screen. This feature can be turned on and off as required. Using an innovative stand, the screen can be used vertically, to display work, and at a low angle, letting designers work more intuitively and efficiently, without having to switch between multiple devices. Darren Gaffey, EU Product Planning & Marketing Manager at Sharp Electronics Europe said: “We know that CAD users and graphic designers are juggling two or three HD displays and tablets to get the resolution and control that they need. We’ve designed the PN-K322BH to effectively combine three or four items into one to let them bring their ideas to life faster, more efficiently and more intuitively. www.sharp.eu

Move to On Demand labels THE ArtSystems Xativa media range has moved to an on demand label printing system that reduces packaging costs and delivers new promotional options for resellers. Reducing costs and obtaining greater resource efficiency are an on-going objective for the Nottingham based trade only distributor so the move to on-demand label printing is a logical step. Since its launch in 2001, the Xativa wide format media range has become well established in the market. On-demand label printing has an impact on the whole chain of supply, which was our main aim. Not only do we get an immediate cost benefit from only printing labels as needed, we get the knock on benefits of storage and time savings. It has also given us the capability to do on-box promotional campaigns with QR codes for example, so there is also a direct marketing benefit as well. Paul Tarry - Division Manager Consumables In addition to the resource efficient labels, the Xativa range has also received a design make over. The new graphics for each of the media types within the collection means easier identification for specific applications. We took the opportunity to update the Xativa graphics and to make them more indicative of the applications that each media is suitable for. So far we’ve had positive feedback from customers who find it easier to identify the ranges. Paul Tarry — Division Manager Consumables www.artsystems.co.uk

specifically to specifications, and to order. This is what has turned Google and Facebook, and the search information on users contained in their servers, into some of the most powerful companies on the planet, and in history. The key to this power is the search engine, which we use on a daily basis to find out more about the world, and our friends, but they use to find out more about us by sifting through the algorithms in fine detail. Instead of concentrating on the obvious popular topics, which may be the top ten selected, they reach into the other ninety per cent, however obscure, which will give a more accurate overall picture of customer interest. This is called the long tail, and it leads to the individual consumer, not the mass market, and will have an increasing effect upon how products are manufactured and distributed. They will be made to order, in fact not made until ordered. It will be a matter of selling less quantity but of more items. Obviously because we work in an on-demand environment, over the counter, or over the internet, this is a concept that will look familiar. We don’t print and store masses of volumes on our shelves expecting that someone will come in and buy them. We produce what the customers wants when they want it, or at least when practical. But we are by the very nature of that relationship forced to be reactive, rather than anticipate demand, and hence everything from staffing to stock and supplies is geared to a “just in time” regime. Perhaps it is time to rethink the conventional way we interact with customers, themselves embracing the new communications, by a more personal approach to their selective needs. Instead of broad advertising of too many products, look at what the current consumer actually wants. Instead of trying to please everyone, all of the time, which will never be possible, investigate a more individually tailored service. The popular internet suppliers will continue to serve the masses, the print shop has to look after the individual who will continue to be a source of revenue long term.

INCREASING THE DISTANCE BETWEEN AMATEUR AND PROFESSIONAL

We have been featuring scanning recently, along with digital photography, for a very good reason. It is one of the important professional services that is very much part of the bureau service that the average customer, especially the next generation of tablet and iPhone users will not be able to handle on their own. Anything that is going to be printed large, or in quality, will need to be digitised at a decent resolution and with a certain amount of expertise. It is so vital to the ultimate print production that it should be promoted as a major advantage of the print shop. It is, after all, something you cannot get done over the internet, without risking loss or damage to

originals in transit, or a time penalty that these days is generally deemed unacceptable. Even customers who have as desktop scanner as part of a PC package seem to be quite incapable of performing the task with any degree of accuracy. The difference between the appearance of an item on a nice bright hi-resolution screen, and the necessary definition for hard copy printing is, and will remain a mystery to all but those in daily touch with the process. At the risk of repeating myself, it’s worth pointing out again that the popularity of the hand held device, the ultimate office on the move, will only increase the gap between the amateur and the professional. Far from taking work away from the print shop, the new digital economy is likely to confirm its place in the production line. A good example is the recent excitement generated in the media by the concept of 3D printers, with some casual observers speculating that everyone would have one in their home by Christmas. But as we know from experience, buying the printer is the easy bit. Making it work properly and produce what you want is the tricky bit. If it were not so, most of our customers would be doing all their printing at home on their inkjets. There is no doubt 3D printing is a significant development, and one which the digital print shop should look at seriously or the future, but it is definitely a format for the commercial studio, not the home. When some customers struggle to handle the correct dimensions and proportions of a business card, the consequences of freelance design in three dimensions doesn’t bear thinking about. Any original object that won’t fit on a conventional flatbed, or feed through a roll-fed scanner, will need to be photographed, although dedicated 3D scanners are starting to become available. I’ll explore the topic more next month There will also be an in depth review of the impressive Contex 42inch scan station as an alternative for large format scanning, in high resolution, and full high definition colour. It has very sophisticated software for pre-scanning adjustment, speed and sensitivity settings, an optional touch operation, and will accept originals up to 15mm thick.

TEN TOP TIPS: Preparing your artwork correctly for print There are many misconceptions that what you see on your screen will print as you expect…but will it? The Magazine Production Company have compiled a top ten list to ensure your work is printed correctly. 1. WORK BACKWARDS

To make the best out of the end results, call your printer for advice and how to best prepare your files. If it’s too complicated, seek the professional service of a designer. The small cost spent here could save you time, money and offer better results.

2. FILE FORMATS

There are many file formats available to you such as EPS, TIF, JPG, PNG, PSD, AI, BMP, PDF, blah blah blah…but do you know which is best to use for print? Generally speaking, if you can export a high resolution PDF file from the program you are working in, then this should cover it. If not, call your copy or print centre for advice.

3. DPI OR PPI

Many people are often misled with the term DPI to relate to resolution on computer or input devices (such as digital cameras). Images should be referred to as PPI (Pixels Per Inch). DPI refers to the Dots Per Inch on output devices such as printers.

4. RESOLUTION

This is one of the biggest problems. Your image may look fine on screen but the resolution of the image may not. Screen resolutions can generally range anywhere from 72 to 220ppi. For print, the image needs to be at 300ppi at the size you want to print at. If the image looks blurry when you start to zoom in then it is sure to be blurry when it is printed. As a rule of thumb: if a JPG file memory size is under 250k then this may not be sufficient for print; 251k-1Mb then the file may be suitable for print up to A5; over 1Mb then there may be a good chance it is suitable to print out up to A4.

5. COLOUR MODE

All images are captured using RGB (Red, Green, Blue) but the majority of printing devices use CMYK (Cyan, Yellow, Magenta and Black (K)). Ideally you should convert the images to the colour mode of the output device. You can then also see how the colour will behave using that output process and be able to make allowances.

6. TRUE BLACK

Converting RGB to Black – well not much can be done but heavy blacks can look nasty in print especially when there are thin white fonts or white lines. If creating artwork from scratch, the best colour value is C30, Y30, M30, K100. This will ensure a nice deep black and maintain reversed white text and lines.

7. ADD BLEED

Bleed is an area around the document where images running up to the edge of the document must exceed this point to avoid white-lining and to allow paper movement when the document is trimmed. The bleed is usually an additional 3mm from each of the outer edges of the document or artwork. Generally you should apply 3mm on all artwork as a safeguard.

8. TRIM MARKS

Trim marks serve as two purposes: to allow for accurate positioning; and accurate trimming. These can be automatically added when you export the document as a PDF for commercial printing. This depends on the program you are using.

9. CALIBRATE YOUR SCREENS

You should never assume the colours you see on your screen will replicate accurately when it is printed. On an uncalibrated screen your job could print darker/lighter warmer/colder than you expect. To minimise colour accuracy issues, ensure your monitor is calibrated before you start your job. If you are after a particular colour, then call your copy centre or printer for advice before you start your job.

10. SPEND THE TIME TO SOURCE THE RIGHT IMAGES

If you used images downloaded from websites then there is a very good chance it will be blurry when it’s printed. Time spent on sourcing the right images at the right resolution, whilst keeping to our tips offered here, will do wonders for any document you want to print. Hiring a designer can take a lot of the headache away to ensure the best results are achieved, after all, the printer or copy centre can only print what you give them.

Mondi’s climate neutral to include inkjet papers

MONDI has expanded its offering of CO2 neutral papers to include its line of high speed inkjet paper products. This has been done to underline its commitment to reducing CO2 emissions overall and also in response to the growing demand for climate neutral products in the professional printing market. “Climate and resource protection is a vital part of our product stewardship and is increasingly turning into a competitive advantage for Mondi,” says Johannes Klumpp, Marketing and Sales Director for Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper. For buyers all over the world, across all industries and business fields – but also in public administration – environmentally sound paper procurement is continually growing in importance. “For our customers, the paper they use for printing represents a significant component

of their environmental message,” Mr. Klumpp adds. One such Mondi customer, LBBW, has been engaged in the area of sustainability for many years now. “We want to actively contribute to climate protection and support a low emission economy. This is why LBBW developed its own climate strategy in 2011, including a defined target for reducing our CO2 emissions. In addition to reducing energy consumption through technical optimisations and the use of green energy, purchasing and using CO2 neutral paper is another important step towards reaching our goal,” explained Wolfgang Nickel, Head of the Group Output Management Services, Landesbank Baden – Württemberg. Together with the climate protection specialist ClimatePartner, Mondi calculated the carbon

footprint of its paper products back in 2010. On the basis of this calculation, Mondi launched Color Copy, its premium laser paper, fully CO2 neutral from cradle to Mondi gate. NAUTILUS®SuperWhite has since also been offered optionally CO2 neutral. Mondi has now a fully developed company wide IT based product carbon footprint programme to calculate a detailed carbon footprint of all paper and packaging products. The calculations are based on the “10 toes” model developed by the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI). “We are able to calculate the carbon footprint of each product, at each stage of the supply chain, to determine the effect of our greenhouse gas reducing activities at every stage,” stated Mr. Klumpp. “Sustainable development is not a separate part of our business. It is our

business.” Dr. Klaus Reisinger, CEO of ClimatePartner Austria, adds: “The paper’s carbon footprint – which makes up roughly 70% of the carbon footprint of a print job - has been calculated and the measures for reduction have been determined jointly with Mondi. Unavoidable emissions are offset via emission reduction certificates from a new hydro power project in Santa Catarina, Brazil.” Mondi has reduced its CO2e emissions per unit of saleable products by 25% since 2004 and has an overall rate of renewable energy usage of 58%. Mondi strives to increase environmental efficiency across the company by reducing water and energy consumption, lowering emissions to air and water, and by preserving biodiversity. To promote knowledge sharing amongst stakeholders both in the industry and within the company itself, Mondi hosts environmentally focused ‘Green Events’ as well as ‘Green Trainings’ and also offers online learning tools, such as the ‘Green Range Trivia Game’ (www.mondigroup.com/ gogreentrivia). All Mondi-branded papers now carry the company’s Green Range label, which stands for sustainable paper production and consists only of papers that meet three core criteria: FSC or PEFC certified, 100% recycled or TCF (totally chlorine free) bleached. www.mondigroup.com

Print and designers reveal challenges RESEARCH from Arjowiggins Graphic indicates that despite the economy (67%) remaining the main issue impacting UK printers and designers, over a third (37%) stated that the environment is currently the biggest challenge facing the business. The research, conducted with over 100 printers and designers, further indicates that the greatest environmental challenge facing the business over the next 2-3 years is in responding to client demands (31%) – followed by finding ways to appropriately communicate their environmental practices (25%). While the demand from customers is clear, this shows a degree of progress, with over 40% stating in 2011 that the biggest challenge was in knowing what to do next when it comes to operating sustainably. Keen to meet this target, two-thirds (76%) of respondents stated that using recycled papers was either very important or important to their organisation,

with over half stating that they currently use recycled paper. A further 90% said that the environmental credentials of their paper manufacturer are also important. With recycled paper providing printers and designers with a stepping-stone for meeting sustainability goals, 47% of respondents indicated an intention to move to using recycled paper* in the next 2-3 years. *Source: 10.3% would move to 100% recycled, 17.9% would move to 75% recycled and 18.8% would move to 50% recycled paper. Angela De Vorchik, Operational Marketing Manager, Arjowiggins Graphic said: “Ensuring that your business is operating sustainably is important, as environmental credentials are a growing consideration for customers, just as respondents concerns about client demands shows. A simple way to incorporate sustainable practices into the fabric of the operation is in choosing recycled papers. Not only does this reduce the company’s carbon emissions and waste to landfill, but provides a really simple way to communicate the organisation’s commitment to the environment.” www.arjowigginsgraphic.com

Cover story: Special QPP Trade-In package on Mimaki printers

SIGN and graphics companies that trade in an old solvent printer when they invest in a Mimaki CJV30 or JV33 this autumn and winter will receive a unique three year fully comprehensive warranty and a total of £1,800 worth of Mimaki ink capable of producing over 700m2 of print.

Profit in paper

With 1.3m and 1.6m models to choose from, the Mimaki JV33 offers sector-defining print and build quality, a proven track record in graphics production departments around the world and a choice of eco-solvent or Mimaki’s peerless SS21 low solvent inks. The two largest CJV30 Series

models (the 1.3m CVJ30-130 and 1.6m CJV30160) are also applicable to the offer and provide integrated print and cut functionality with the same print quality and inksets as the JV33. Customers simply need to trade in an old solvent printer to benefit from a warranty that spans three times the typical industry standard and a bumper pack of ink that is capable of generating significant revenue from the outset. John de la Roche; national sales manager for Mimaki’s exclusive distributor, Hybrid Services Ltd states; “A three year warranty gives complete peace of mind for our customers and is significantly longer than any other offer in the wide format industry. To know that their investment is protected means a lot to our customers – a new Mimaki with three years of fully comprehensive, gold warranty cover ensures premium support and response, should it ever be required.” Prospective customers seeking to take advantage of the offer have until the end of December to place their order with one of Hybrid’s authorised resellers. Hybrid will recycle their traded-in solvent printer and ship the additional inks to the customer. “Including the 3.5 litres of ink that come as standard, customers will receive almost nine litres of ink in total,” confirms de la Roche. “That’s enough to produce well over 700m2 of print that could have a retail value in excess of the printer itself!” www.hybridservices.co.uk

After an hour of gathering up his courage he finally goes over to her and asks, tentatively, “Um, would you mind if I chatted with you for a while?” To which she responds by yelling, at the top of her lungs, “No, I won’t sleep with you tonight!” By now, the entire bar is staring at them. Naturally, the sales guy is hopelessly and completely embarrassed and he slinks back to his table. After a few minutes, the woman walks over to him and apologises. She smiles at him and says, “I’m sorry if I embarrassed you. You see, I’m a graduate student in psychology and I’m studying how people respond to embarrassing situations.” To which he responds, at the top of his lungs, “What do you mean £200!”? Understanding

THE FAIRER SEX A woman is a complicated creature. Before marriage, she expects a man, after marriage she suspects him, and after death she respects him.

DADS FORUM A frustrated father told a work colleague: “When I was a youngster, I was disciplined by being sent to my room without supper. But in my son’s room, he has his own colour TV, computer, games console, cell phone and CD player.” “So what do you do?” The father replied: “I send him to my room!”

MARITAL ADVICE LINES My wife and I have the secret to making a marriage last. 1. Twice a week, we go to a nice restaurant, a little wine, good food and companionship. She goes Tuesdays, I go Fridays. 2. We also sleep in separate beds. Hers is in Manchester, mine is in London. 3. I take my wife everywhere, but she keeps finding her way back.

One day a salesman came in to work with two of his ears bandaged.

4. I asked my wife, ‘Where do you want to go for our anniversary?’ ‘Somewhere I haven’t been in a long time!’ So I suggested, ‘How about the kitchen?’ 5. We always hold hands. If I let go, she shops. 6. She has an electric blender, electric toaster, and electric bread maker. Then she said ‘There are too many gadgets, and no place to sit down!’ So I bought her an electric chair. 7. My wife told me the car wasn’t running well, there was water in the carburettor. When I asked where the car was, she told me, ‘In the lake.’ 8. She got a mudpack and looked great for two days. Then the mud fell off... 9. She ran after the dustbin lorry, yelling, ‘Am I too late for the garbage?’ The driver said, ‘No, jump in!’ 10. Yes there were ten! She wouldn’t let this one in.

NELSON DISCUSSING TRAFALGAR IN 2013 Nelson: “Order the signal, Hardy.” Hardy: “Aye, aye sir.” Nelson: “Hold on, this isn’t what I dictated to Flags. What’s the meaning of this?” Hardy: “Sorry sir?” Nelson (reading aloud): “ England expects every person to do his or her duty, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religious persuasion or disability.’ - What gobbledygook is this for God’s sake?” Hardy: “Admiralty policy, I’m afraid, sir. We’re an equal opportunities employer now. We had the devil’s own job getting “ England “ past the censors, lest it be considered racist.” Nelson: “Gadzooks, Hardy. Hand me my pipe and tobacco.” Hardy: “Sorry sir. All naval vessels have now been designated smokefree working environments.” Nelson: “In that case, break open the rum ration. Let us splice the main brace to steel the men before battle.”

When his boss asked him what happened, he explained: “Yesterday I was ironing a shirt when the phone rang…

Hardy: “The rum ration has been abolished, Admiral. It’s part of the Government’s policy on binge drinking.” Nelson: “Good heavens, Hardy. I suppose we’d better get on with it full speed ahead.” Hardy: “I think you’ll find that there’s a 4 knot speed limit in this stretch of water.” Nelson: “Damn it man! We are on the eve of the greatest sea battle in history. We must advance with all dispatch. Report from the crow’s nest, please.” Hardy: “That won’t be possible, sir.” Nelson: “What?” Hardy: “Health and Safety have closed the crow’s nest, sir. No harness; and they said that rope ladders don’t meet regulations. They won’t let anyone up there until proper scaffolding can be erected.” Nelson: “Then get me the ship’s carpenter without delay, Hardy.” Hardy: “He’s busy knocking up a wheelchair access to the foredeck Admiral.” Nelson: “Wheelchair access? I’ve never heard anything so absurd.” Hardy: “Health and safety again, sir. We have to provide a barrierfree environment for the differently abled.” Nelson: “Differently abled? I’ve only one arm and one eye and I refuse even to hear mention of the word. I didn’t rise to the rank of admiral by playing the disability card.” Hardy: “Actually, sir, you did. The Royal Navy is under- represented in the areas of visual impairment and limb deficiency.” Nelson: “Whatever next? Give me full sail. The salt spray beckons.” Hardy: “A couple of problems there too, sir. Health and safety won’t let the crew up the rigging without hard hats. And they don’t want anyone breathing in too much salt - haven’t you seen the adverts?” Nelson: “I’ve never heard such infamy. Break out the cannon and tell the men to stand by to engage the enemy.” Hardy: “The men are a bit worried about shooting at anyone, Admiral.”

…and I accidentally answered the iron instead of the phone!”

Nelson: “What? This is mutiny!” Hardy: “It’s not that, sir. It’s just that they’re afraid of being charged with murder if they actually kill anyone. There are a couple of legal-aid lawyers on board, watching everyone like hawks.” Nelson: “Then how are we to sink the Frenchies and the Spanish?” Hardy: “Actually, sir, we’re not.” Nelson: “We’re not?” Hardy: “No, sir… The French and the Spanish are our European partners now. According to the Common Fisheries Policy, we shouldn’t even be in this stretch of water. We could get hit with a claim for compensation.” Nelson: “But you must hate a Frenchman as you hate the devil.” Hardy: “I wouldn’t let the ship’s diversity coordinator hear you saying that sir. You’ll be up on disciplinary report.” Nelson: “You must consider every man an enemy, who speaks ill of your King.” Hardy: “Not any more, sir. We must be inclusive in this multicultural age. Now put on your Kevlar vest; it’s the rules. It could save your life” Nelson: “Don’t tell me - Health and Safety. Whatever happened to rum, the lash and the other thing?” Hardy: As I explained, sir, rum is off the menu! And there’s a ban on corporal punishment.” Nelson: “What about the other thing?” Hardy: “I believe that is now legal, sir.” Nelson: “In that case...Kiss me, Hardy.”

AFTER DINNER SPEECH Two cannibals just finished a big meal and one turns to the other while rubbing his stomach with his fist and says, ‘You know, I just ate my mother-in-law, and she still doesn’t agree with me!’

SHUT UP DAN There are many advantages of a trip to Switzerland. I mean, even the flag itself is a big plus.

“Well,” the boss said, “that explains one ear, but what about the other?” “They called back!”
