Roland new head office and Creative Centre ROLAND DG (UK) Ltd has officially opened its new head office and Creative Centre in Clevedon, near Bristol in a ceremony officiated by the global President of Roland DG Corporation, Mr Tomioka. Also present at the event were members of the Roland DG UK team, as well as CEOs and representatives from Roland DG offices around the world. Printed Interior Decoration Conference

WHEN introducing a new trend into the world of print, the right partners from different industrial segments need to be involved. HP’s 7600 gives Entwistle Competitive Advantage MANCHESTER based print service provider, Entwistle Group, has boosted productivity and turnaround times while saving costs by doubling its print capacity with an HP Indigo 7600 Digital Press. Sign & Digital UK gears up for biggest show in 2015

FOLLOWING a bumper 2014 show, Sign & Digital UK confirms that stand bookings for 2015 are up by 20% year-on-year, with over 100 exhibitors already confirmed. The UK’s leading trade exhibition for the sign making, display solutions and digital printing industry returns to the NEC, Birmingham on 24 to 26 March 2015. Canon Ticks the Fine Art Box for Harwood King HARWOOD King Fine Art Studio, market leading fine art screen printers, Newhaven, East Sussex, has replaced its primary large format printing devices with the Canon iPF 8400 and Canon iPF 815. The printers were purchased from and installed by Canon reseller M Partners Wide, the large format equipment distributor based in Surrey, a division of M Partners Limited. The new additions to the Harwood King production line-up provide, respectively, high quality print and film output. The iPF 8400 is a 12-colour, 44-inch wide printing device, ideal for the company’s fine art print production and proofing. The iPF 815 is a five colour 44-inch device focused on film production for the subsequent creation of silkscreen originals. Highly respected in its field, Harwood King Fine Arts Studio, giclee printmakers and silkscreen specialists, has been in the business of producing fine art prints for more than 30 years. The company has produced limited edition prints for artists and galleries from all over the world. Harwood King has always been an innovative art studio, testing new materials and techniques, particularly in silkscreen and giclee digital production. The business has not been afraid to redefine the traditional idea of a print, combining printmaking processes to produce truly collectable limited editions. As a fine example, in “Slipstream” by Dan Baldwin they combined giclee, silkscreen and hand embellished areas, using 22-carat gold leaf and coloured foils. In other example, in the “Apocalypse” series of prints they fired bullets through the prints and collaged bank notes within the printing. On the subject of the new Canon printers, Quentin Harwood King, owner and managing director of Harwood King, said: “Our previous device had been a good servant for many years, but it was showing signs of age. We knew that we needed to invest, and whilst Epson is the

“go to” supplier in the market place, I wanted to review other products as well. Canon, to us, was a revelation. They certainly appeared to be ahead of the game. The twelve-colour system is a huge boost for us – especially in the red area of the spectrum. Colour, for fine art work, is so critical. The colour gamut and the stability of the system were both immediate advantages for us. “We also create films for stencil creation for screen printing. Our previous large format machine offered little stability for the media – we would often spend huge amounts of time manually adjusting distortion in the films. Canon’s iPF 815 uses motors to drive the material in and to rewind the film. This provides a far more stable and reliable platform for our film creation. It has already saved us a huge amount of work; a saving that has a double benefit as our operators can be producing chargeable work instead of fiddling with bits of film at our expense!” Quentin Harwood King has found a number of features of the Canon devices that provide significant advantages to his fine art print production business: “The internal memory on the

iPF 8400 is a huge boost to productivity. We are often in the situation where the final proof has been approved by our customer, and a number of large format prints are required. The fact that the Canon holds the RIPped file in its memory means that we can go straight into print mode and we know, 100%, that we have the right file and that it will print successfully – we can simply punch in the required number of prints and let the device do its stuff! “Overall we are replacing old with new – but new with some great additional benefits for our business: the overall quality is better, it’s faster, and the colour accuracy is so good and reliable. The colour accuracy provides us with the biggest saving: we no longer spend hours fiddling with profiles to tweak them to get a colour just right. We simply don’t need to.” Harwood King offers one of the few silkscreen printing services for the fine art market anywhere in the world. Whilst much of the screen printing market is focused on crudely produced T-shirt and ceramic printing, this company take the skills to a whole new level. Fifteen to twenty colour printing is not uncommon at the Newhaven company as it produces what it considers continuous-tone silkscreen. The business has produced work with up to a staggering 95 screens. Driving Business Through Binding CANNOCK, Staffordshire based KJB UK Ltd has recently taken delivery of a range of equipment from Renz UK. This includes a Renz Punch 500 and a Mobi 500, which has helped to improve the company’s product range and to drive new business opportunities. Steve Egerton, Commercial Director of KJB, commented: ‘We have gone through a period of change in our business. We have been investing in digital technology and have installed several Xerox devices through the last year. Having looked at the changes in print technology, we then looked at updating our finishing department.’ This includes buying a number of

finishing devices including the Renz equipment. Steve is very happy with the Renz machines, saying: ‘They have really improved our product range. ‘Before we were outsourcing our

wiro binding but it wasn’t very efficient, especially with the move to digital. So, we looked at the cost and logistics and decided to bring it in-house – and it has just grown and grown.’

For KJB it is the productivity and high quality results from the Punch 500 and Mobi 500 that have helped it to win new business. Currently the company is producing anything from a single wiro bound document to runs of many thousands. ‘The growth on the wiro binder has been phenomenal,’ said Steve. ‘The operators love the machines and they are very easy to use.’ He concluded, ‘Renz service is also first rate. It understands our business and the requirements of a finishing department. ‘Renz is a ‘partner’ not a ‘supplier’. CS Labels Switches to Canon for Proofing CS Labels, Willenhall, West Midlands, the award winning digital label printing business, has announced details of its latest equipment acquisition – a Canon imagePROGRAF iPF 6450 large format printer. The machine has been added to provide colour accurate proofs for the company’s suite of Xeikon label printing presses. The printer was purchased from and installed by Canon reseller M Partners Wide, the large format equipment distributor based in Surrey, a division of M Partners Limited. The Canon imagePROGRAF iPF 6450 provides up to twelve colour printing with a media width of 24 inches, and has been purchased complete with built-in spectrophotometer for a total colour matching solution. Commenting on the purchase, Neil Churchill, Studio Manager at CS Labels, said: “When our ageing Epson finally broke down we took the opportunity to look at the proofing market to see which machine we should replace it with. Having read good reports of the Canon products, we requested prints from some of our sample files. The results were outstanding. The colour quality from Canon was extremely impressive.” CS Labels brought in M Partners Wide, the Canon reseller, for further discussions. “We were very impressed with their attitude and with what they had to say. They were able to install the product on an extended trial for us in order for us to test our various file formats and job types on the machine. It passed all of our tests. “The M Partners Wide experts were able to produce profiles for us so that

we could match the output from our Xeikon machines exactly – in fact they provided a range of profiles to work with the different stocks that we print on. At one time we would have proofed very colour critical jobs on the Xeikon label printer, but that is expensive, both in terms of machine time and substrates. Now it is a faster and 100% accurate solution to proof the work on the Canon,” explained Neil. Neil was also impressed by the support provided by M Partners: “They use a remote log-in to call up our system and fix any software issues – we are back and running again in minutes. M Partners have been very responsive on the few occasions that we have needed their support and advice – it’s so much better to deal with a company where you can speak to individuals, and you know that they are UK based.” Adding his thoughts with regard to Canon’s offering, Simon Smith, Managing Director of CS Labels, commented: “Neil was impressed by the quality, and that is important for our business. I was also very taken with Canon’s ability to provide machine-to-machine colour accuracy. Using new technology such as Enhanced Productivity Mode, HP’s latest digital press will improve ProCo’s up-time and efficiency. Roland Launches Texart 64-Inch Dye Sub Printer ROLAND DG has launched the Texart RT-640, an advanced, 64-inch dye sublimation transfer printer in either four or eight colour ink configurations featuring innovative print control technology and a choice of powerful RIP software. According to Mark Elvidge, Roland DG product manager, the RT-640 incorporates a host of technological advancements which optimise sublimation transfer output whilst minimising running costs. “One of the Texart RT-640’s major innovations is our new ink. Previously, colours sublimated to fabrics could look distorted with dull blacks, missing greys and fuzzy details. New MTEX Digital Textile Printers TWO new digital textile printers have arrived at their new home in the MTEX Technologies Demonstration Centre at the heart of the Midlands, on the Derbyshire and Leicestershire border. They’re the first in a suite of dedicated textile solutions being installed in the centre, MTEX’s new base for UK and Ireland demonstration and testing for the sign and display market, as well as the home textile and fashion industries. Unlike many print solutions in the sign market that were designed for production banner and vinyl printing with temporary textile printing capabilities, MTEX only manufactures dedicated digital textile printing and finishing equipment and they understand the process from fibre to fabric. Specialists in their field, MTEX was founded just outside Porto in Portugal, in the traditional centre of European textile trade at Santo Tirso and as such has a wealth of skills and heritage that can only be found in that part of the world. The founders Eloi Ferrira and Marco Sousa and managing director of MTEX Technologies in the UK Stewart Bell, have many years experience in the wide format print and imaging market. Combined, they have a very strong understanding of what true digital textile printing can achieve for sign and display graphics companies today. Stewart Bell comments; “We are delighted at the arrival of the first two printers in our demonstration centre – the MTEX 1800 and the MTEX 5032Pro. All have in-line heat fixation that only kicks in when you are printing and within a metre, the colour is revealed as it uses a single path method. There’s no need to keep it hot like traditional calendars, using up energy and money even if it is not in use. Because of the nature of direct to textile all-in-one printing and fixation, there’s no waste dye-sub or protection paper involved and the potential for spoilage or damage is virtually nil. The MTEX 1800 was the first to be installed at the centre and is aimed at medium sized display graphic and home textile companies that want a machine that will print dedicated textiles with punchy colours. It is 1.8m wide and prints extremely high quality vibrant colours at up to 48sqm per hour and has a two litre bulk ink system for continuous printing. It is built to

exacting industrial standards as an integrated onefootprint unit with integrated workflow. The MTEX 5032Pro has also been installed ready for demonstration and customer testing. This machine is a 3.2m wide direct-to-textile printer with integrated fixation and runs at 58sqm per hour. It is the second generation version of the 3.2m wide MTEX 5032 which has a proven track record in the industry as the market leading direct-to-textile printer in Europe. Different fabrics can have varying tensions across the roll, so MTEX developed an electro-pneumatic feeding system that handles the challenges inherent with printing onto textiles with ease, and prevents errors occurring during the print process. The feed and take up system has compressed air shafts which can now handle bigger and heavier rolls of material than the previous model and is married with the un-interrupted bulk ink feed system for continuous printing. A Bridge Not Too Far

The story so far: Just a click away is a really useful programme often overlooked and underused. Adobe Bridge may not have the high profile presence of mainstream software like Photoshop and Illustrator but its ability to span the disciplines is invaluable for sorting files in these days when we are bombarded with multiple images and file types for print. Martin Christie organises his files… the output module were really useful. Adobe say it is available as a plug-in for Creative Cloud but a number of users are experiencing problems installing it or getting it to work. I’ll try and get to the bottom of the problem for next month’s column, and also reveal how Bridge can be used in conjunction with Lightroom.

SCANNING – SIZING IT UP

B

RIDGE HAS BEEN around for some time, starting life as a browser tool for image folders in Photoshop. Now, in Creative Cloud mode it is a powerful stand-alone tool for searching, interrogation, and organisation. Older readers may remember Extensis pioneered what they called Digital Asset Management, long before many realised how vital it would become as the sheer volume of files and folders increased, and the problem of actually finding the proverbial needle in the haystack became critical. Not just original files, but copies of copies and subsequent edits would make it a vast soup of confusing information. Extensis realised that you could not rely on human memory or logic to see through this looming mess in the way that you could once rely on filing clerks to find a missing parchment. Through research they actually established that what seemed logical one day might be different the next, or even later the same day. So instead of relying on a filing system of A for apple or B for blackberry it was better to load up more key descriptive words in the event of them both being placed ‘logically’ in a folder marked F for fruit. And that’s not even mentioning the tomato which is technically a fruit but which most people would expect to find in the vegetable section, not in a fruit salad. Adobe seem to have taken a lot of Extensis development in hand, and it is likely the two have worked closely together. Like Extensis’ ground breaking Portfolio, Bridge creates thumbnails of all files in a given folder and saves them in a cache. This enables simple visual recognition of files which is often a better way to identify particular items than digital codes.

In addition, there is the metadata which is the actual embedded reference to information on date, time, size etc. Then there are keywords that can be added by the operator to make cataloging and subsequently finding again a much easier task. Thus the tomato could be tagged as fruit, and plant, as well as red, juice, source, etc. Colour tags in several bright shades can also be added to particular files, for example, if a folder has lots of pictures or tomatoes, but only one or two are required or are suitable for printing. The information on the Bridge workspace will also reveal, size, colour space and resolution to determine whether it is suitable for printing at the size required. It may also have useful information on original source, or subsequent edits. Selected files can be moved and renamed from Bridge, to be placed in more convenient folders, or copied from a customer’s memory stick for example. They can also be opened in any appropriate Adobe programme for editing, like taking them directly into a saved action in Photoshop for resizing. With InDesign files there often are missing links to other files or images, and here the track to the source should be visible, as will be fonts, colour swatches and display material that saves a lot of time. Bridge is specifically developed to work seamlessly with all other Adobe programmes, but is perhaps sometimes overlooked as a tool because of its historic connection with Photoshop. It is so much more than a browser, but an essential part of digital workflow. Adobe has moved some functions in and out of Bridge in recent versions, some of which like

A mention of Epson’s new A4 flatbed scanners in last month’s magazine underlines the variety of equipment an up to date digital studio requires to meet the possible needs of customers. Whether it’s the demise of the high street photographic specialists, or the move to do more production at a distance on-line, we have certainly seen an upturn in demand for high quality scanning of film and original artwork. Because it’s often delicate, or inevitably required urgently – or both – it’s not something you would want to pass on to some anonymous entity in the clouds, via a package chucked in the back of a white van by an overloaded courier service. It’s definitely something that requires that one-to-one conversation and exchange with a human being over the counter. It’s almost always unique, and needs individual attention, but that’s nothing new to the traditional copy shop, as it’s very much like a lot of the items that used to be brought to the counter long before the digital society when customers had no other option than to bring originals. It may not be a main revenue earner these days, but it is a service that can demand at least a modest premium, and often will generate other print purchases. With a modest investment, a small amount of space and a minimum amount of expertise needed to operate, the small flatbed scanner has a place. Of course, most shops will have a working flatbed scanner on top of at least some digital printers, but the quality varies considerably, and there are generally few controls over scan settings. Therefore a dedicated scanner is a better option for artwork, but more importantly, in being able to scan all types of film. Despite the digital camera, there are still some people using film, and of course a century-and-a-half of common usage means there are still plenty of negatives, transparencies and slides in albums and shoe boxes throughout the land. Scanner costs are relative to size. A good quality photo scanner at A4, like the Epson V800/850 range, will cost from £500 to £1,000. An A3 version

will be at least twice that, but will make it feasible to scan as well as film, larger flat artwork of A2 or even A1 size, by scanning in parts and stitching together. This is the process most specialists use as A2 flatbeds and beyond go into the £10,000 price bracket — and they won’t even scan film. They are very rare in the UK. Copy shops that offer large format scanning are almost certainly using roller fed machines that are not suitable for thick or delicate items, and this is where customers may be confused if they are searching on line for such a service. Artists and designers working on original hard copies are almost certainly working at a minimum of A3 size which is where the need is, and a flatbed of some specification is the only solution. As reviewed previously, we have a very good Snap Scan overhead book scanner which is

brilliant for a lot of things up to A3, but for fine detail does suffer from slight optical distortion at the extreme of its range. This can also be the case with digital copier scanners if they are pushed to see things on the edge of the glass.

It may only be a small distortion, but it will be enough to make accurate stitching difficult, especially if you are relying on an automatic process by using stitching software. The most reliable is still to use the human eye with a lot of help from Photoshop layers, to piece the sections together. If you missed the last lesson, a few months back, the trick is to scan sections of larger artwork with at least a 30% overlap so that they can be blended together seamlessly. Take one section and make the canvas size that of the final output, and then copy and paste the neighbouring section in place above it. Selecting ‘Difference’ in layer properties will identify the difference between the pixels in one layer from the other. When all the technicolours merge to black you have a perfect match and any slight mismatch can be cleaned up with a mixture of eraser or clone. Repeat the process one section at a time to complete the final image. With a little practice, it gets easier, and you can recognise originals that will be problematical. One of the advantages of the dedicated photo scanners, as much as the resolution and quality options, is that the hoods are usually removable so the sections can be scanned in the same direction, rather than having to turn them. Because scanners scan in one direction only, turning the scan may result in some difference in colour between opposing sections. With so much reliance on digital input from customers, via email or on memory stick, it’s easy to forget that there is still a considerable amount of original hard copy that needs to be tackled with these devices and by a happy coincidence three jobs came in this very week that underlined this. The first was a customer with a lengthy hard copy menu, with a few minor adjustments needed, and no digital version. No problem, the Snap Scan has the latest Optical Character Recognition software, and had the job done accurately in a couple of seconds, converted to Word or PDF, ready for editing.

Then there was a folder of slide film from a 1970s concert by folk guitarist John Martin, needed for a re-mastered CD collection. Although some of the images were a little out of focus, taken in variable light in the days of manual focus, they didn’t need much cleaning of dust and Epson’s Ice technology did the job pulling out crisp colour from the 35mm originals.

Finally, quite a touching sight, an original 1945 print, now a little aged and crumpled by being rolled, of an entire RAF squadron posing proudly in front of a Lancaster bomber in the closing months of WW2. Three foot long, but only one foot high, this was scanned in three 400dpi sections on our Konica Minolta Bizhub and pieced together to produce some stunning reproductions that someone will treasure as a priceless image. Good examples of how adaptable the on demand market can be these days.

Fujifilm raises over €150,000 for WaterAid

FUJIFILM has raised over €150,000 to date in its continued support of WaterAid, the international charity dedicated to providing access to safe water in some of the world’s poorest communities. Since 2012, Fujifilm has donated a percentage of the sales of every square metre of Brillia HD PRO-T3 processless plates sold in Europe, Middle East and Africa to the global organisation. And, it is thanks to the success of PRO-T3, that the amount of money raised has surpassed all expectations. Since the start of the initiative between the two companies in 2012, Fujifilm has consistently surpassed its targets, raising €65,025 – over double its €30,000 target – in the first 12 months, and culminating in a total of €150,299 raised to date in just over two years. Corporate account executive, Asma Rafiq, says: “We are delighted that what started out as a 12-month initiative two years ago, has developed into an ongoing partnership with Fujifilm. High scores indicate that a company provides robust climate data and conveys a strong understanding of corporate climate-related issues. Only companies with a score in the top 10% are awarded a position in the CDLI, showing they have provided a high level of transparency in their disclosure of climate-related information. ARJOWIGGINS Graphic has helped to revitalise a local area of ancient woodland in Chineham for the first time in 30 years. Working with Chineham Conservation Group, the team of nine spent the day restoring and coppicing an overgrown area of Great Sorrell’s Copse that supports local birds and plants such as the Great Spotted Woodpecker, Early Purple Orchid and Herb-Paris for the past 400 years. And why is it that writers write but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce and hammers don’t ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn’t the plural of booth beeth? One goose, two geese. So one moose, two meese? One index, two indices? Doesn’t it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend, that you comb through annals of history but not a single annal? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it? If teachers taught, why didn’t preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? I hope you pre press proof readers are getting all this? In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell? How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike? There’s more so hang on in there, your only course for revenge is to send in your own QPP readers scribes to be published here to share the agony. Now, have you noticed that we talk about certain things only when they are absent? Have you ever seen a horseful carriage or a strapful gown? met a sung hero or experienced requited love? Have you ever run into someone who was combobulated, gruntled, ruly or peccable? And

where are all those people who ARE spring chickens or who would ACTUALLY hurt a fly? You have to marvel at the uniqueness of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out, and in which an alarm goes off by going on. English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race (which, of course, isn’t a race at all). That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it, but when I wind up this scribe, I end it?
