Inc Dot moves to second generation digital colour YORK based Inc Dot Design & Print is replacing its three year old Linoprint C 751 with the latest generation Linoprint CP from Heidelberg. “Although most buyers are unconcerned whether their work is printed litho or digital there is still credibility if you say that you are running Heidelberg equipment. That badge and our ISO 9001 quality, ISO 140001 and FSC certifications are key selling points with our local business and public sector customers,” says managing director Nick Turnbull, who runs the company with his sister Pascha. Inc Dot needed a robust, substantially built digital press that could handle heavier weight boards (up to 400gsm) reliably and offer consistent colour. The Turnbulls did look at HP Indigo and Xerox products but came down in favour of the Heidelberg Linoprint CP performance model. “Customers are often disappointed by the thinner boards usually run through digital machines. Having the ability to run 400gsm stock will certainly give us an edge in the market. Also, this investment will change the breakpoint between litho and digital, taking the cost crossover much closer to the 1,000 run mark. Simply put, our customers are looking for the right quality, the right quantity, delivered at the right time and at the right price. As we move to an online selling service we are aware that the Linoprint will enable us to be increasingly responsive whilst remaining competitive,” says Mr Turnbull. Currently 60% of Inc Dot’s revenue is from litho production (it runs a Speedmaster SM 52-4-P and a GTO-2-P), 40% from digital (black and white and colour) but it hopes this latest investment will push it towards a 50-50 split. There has been a strong demand for the latest generation Linoprint CP
machine because of its mid-range price, high productivity, litho-like quality and its ability to produce six page A4 products. At Inc Dot the Linoprint will be run on a flexible day basis with overtime as required. Although the company retains a counter most of its work is business to business. Face to face interaction and attention to customer care underpin the company’s high loyalty rate. Inc Dot was founded in 1979 by Nick and Pascha’s father John. Today it offers a broad range of commercial print with an in-house design and finishing services for those who need it. In addition to the new press, Inc Dot have recently invested in extended finishing capabilities, now adding foiling, spot varnish, and PUR binding to the repertoire. www.inc-dot.com
CMYUK launches digital learning on YouTube THE expert team at CMYUK is helping its customers get the best from their machines through a series of ‘How to’ tutorials on its new ‘CMYUK Showroom’ channel on You Tube. The team plans to make around ten videos a month, and the simple instructional films already available include producing short run packing and prototypes, printing i-phone cases and pens, printing pre-cut boards on Mimaki printers, and greyscale printing on a Vutek H2000. “We wanted to offer our customers a bank of professional tutorials that will enable them to get the most from their equipment, and to diversify into new markets,” explained CMYUK director Robin East. “The videos we create for our You Tube channel are based on direct feedback and ‘frequently asked questions from our demo centre. The customers that visit our demonstration suite ask to see practical applications that are real, relevant and useful for their business so we decided to share these demonstrations with a wider audience by creating a digital learning centre online. “For example the next video will be on the Zünd G3 cutter XY trimming at speed, which demonstrates the accuracy and efficiency of the cutter enabling common line removal for increased productivity. What this means in effect you can cut up to fifty 750mm x 2m pop-ups in 10 minutes flat.” Other tutorials in the pipeline for the Zünd G3 are: Speed perspex routing including inlaid paths for 3D signage creating niche applications. The wide array of tooling offers finishes up to 50mm in depth for multiple applications, executable on one platform, with the highest precision and quality on each process; Processing 16mm ReBoard, typically used in point of sale and exhibition stand applications. Zünd Cut Centre uses the registration marks to calculate the relevant distortion and position for the Thru-cut and the Electric Oscillating Tool 250 can process not only thick touch honeycomb media,
but also corrugated packaging medias, Kapa foam type materials and up to 50mm thick foams; Reverse head registration crease and cut for corrugated board typically used in point of sale applications. The Zünd reads the registration marks like a standard print and cut process, then automatically mirrors the file to suit. The product is then cut and creased from the reverse without any manual interaction; and Zünd Cut Centre Software which guides any user through the steps of digital cutting, including Import of jobs and Hotfolders; Cut Queue with barcode scanning, time estimation, filtering, production setup and simultaneous cutting and preparation; Cut Centre with tool ID, timings, blade mileage, material database, auto vacuum adjust, safety features (red or green warnings), visualisation; and Cut Editor with inlays, cut optimisation, common line removal, file editing. www.cmyuk.com, go to https://www.youtube.com/channel/ UCejfkkXzUbEekxrXBBHdfpQ or go to www.youtube.co.uk and search for CMYUK Showroom.

Mimaki to present at Viscom Düsseldorf 2015 AT Viscom Düsseldorf 2015, Mimaki will be featuring the future of sign and display graphics, large format, textile and industrial printing for increased versatility and more effective development and production within these segments. The company will be exhibiting in Hall 8b on Stand J31 at the trade show taking place from 4-6 November 2015. “Viscom presents an excellent opportunity for us to demonstrate the opportunities our continually growing range of solutions brings to the market,” says Mike Horsten, General Manager Marketing EMEA at Mimaki Europe. “We want to support committed companies in improving their service offerings and expanding into a wider range of applications for improved profitability and new revenue streams. The focus of the show stand will be on new and updated products that offer our customers more business opportunities than ever before. Naturally, we also want to demonstrate and display our tried and tested systems and share with visitors how these have helped other companies acquire new markets.” Mimaki will be exhibiting its extensive selection of technologies, inks and special colours in the graphics sector. In addition to printing and cutting systems, visitors will be able to familiarise themselves with the complete range of solvent-based and UV ink sets. These allow Mimaki users to set themselves apart from the competition with striking signs and displays that can be produced on a variety of different media. The printing systems that will be on display in the Mimaki stand include the CJV-150 and the popular CJV-300 integrated printing/cutting combinations for solvent-based inks, recognised by the European Digital Press Association (EDP) at this year’s FESPA as the best Print & Cut solutions, as well as the JV300 and JV400 SUV that set new standards by combining the flexibility of solvent printing with the durability of UV inks. In the industrial sector of the trade show stand, the company answers the question as to why a UV printer from Mimaki is the best market investment. The unique Kebab option from Mimaki that facilitates 360 degree-printing on cylindrical products will be demonstrated on the UJF-6042 printing system, with metallic effects and other special finishing techniques being demonstrated live. The JFX200 UV-LED printing system will encourage visitors to think about how they might also be able to enter new markets using clear varnish and primer. The unmatched matt white ink from Mimaki will be demonstrated on the JFX500 printing at breakneck speed. Also on display will be the powerful UJV500-160 UV-LED roller printer with its unique UV inks that offer exceptional weather-resistance for outdoor use.

It ensures high quality printing and top level productivity with ultra-accurate ink droplet placement. Fine lines, edges, and small text are displayed crystal clear. The solution also enables double-layer printing and colour printing on a white base layer. For textile printing, a wide range of solutions will be presented that enable sublimation printing on polyester, a current trend with good profit opportunities. The products range from entry-level solution JV150 that uses powerful ink types to foster creativity and versatility, to the TS500-1800, the fastest large-format inkjet colour sublimation printer in its class. In addition, the TS300P-1800 impresses, processing very thin paper at high speeds and delivering brilliant sublimation printing. In many Mimaki systems, the affordable and advanced sublimation inks SB53 and SB300 from Mimaki are used to ensure a competitive price for a powerful, high-density printed image. These inks received OEKO-TEX certification this year for direct skin contact. “The Mimaki Germany Team is delighted to present all these options to its customers and to visitors to the Mimaki stand,” Horsten adds. “Mimaki is dedicated to offering solutions that help customers expand their offerings, and go beyond previous limits to unleash creativity and increase profits!” www.hybridservices.co.uk
GPT Customers Raise a Glass to Printoberfest GRAPHIC Printing Technologies (GPT) has announced that Printoberfest, the October Festival of Signs, Display and Graphics Applications, has been a great success. Customers from all parts of the country went to GPT’s showroom in Reading to see the very latest large format equipment from HP, Mimaki, Vivid, Esko and more. Shaun Thompson, general manager of GPT, said, “Our customers seemed to really appreciate this format of event. Several of them said that it was a pleasure to have the time and space to see lots of different solutions and be able to discuss at length their specific application and product needs.” As well as printers, laminators and cutting solutions from leading manufacturers, Printoberfest also had a RIP workshop session and a live vehicle wrapping demonstration by Paul White of Adsign. GPT is the only UK dealer to have the new HP Scitex FB550 in its showroom and is also the only one available to view anywhere south of Birmingham. As a result, it generated a lot of interest and GPT is pleased to announce at least two sales from the event. GPT also sold a number of solvent and latex machines at Printoberfest. Thompson adds, “We were able to provide several exclusive offers to visitors of Printoberfest. Some of these offers run through until the end of the year,
so we still encourage anyone who couldn’t attend this week to call us to discuss them further.” He concludes, “Overall, GPT and its suppliers were very pleased with Printoberfest and what it has achieved. We have seen more than 40 people attend the event and have a first-hand view of what we offer. Many of these will be making additional investment in equipment, particularly in line with the excellent offers we are able to deliver. We will certainly be running Printoberfest again next year - and may even consider a Springfest event!” www.g-p-t.co.uk

Winner of ‘Roland Apprentice of the Year’
NATHAN Aston has been awarded the accolade of ‘Roland DG Apprentice of the Year’, as he overcame tough competition to triumph at this year’s BSGA British Sign Awards. The ‘Roland DG Apprentice of the Year’ award recognises sign making apprentices who have made outstanding progress in their academic and learning achievements, as well as a real contribution to their employer’s business. Nathan was nominated for the award by his
employer, Ast Transport Branding, for exceeding their expectations and demonstrating initiative, enterprise and creativity throughout his apprenticeship. After being shortlisted for the award, the 18-year-old was rewarded with the title of ‘Roland DG Apprentice of the Year’ at the BSGA Awards Presentation gala event, which was held at East Midlands Conference Centre in Nottingham. He said: “It was great to win this award — I’ve been working as an apprentice for a year and a half at Ast Transport Branding, and really enjoying the responsibility and skills I’ve been learning. I’m very proud to have won.” As a leading manufacturer of wide format digital printers, Roland DG is delighted to have sponsored the ‘Apprentice of the Year’ award and is committed to supporting young and emerging talent from the sign industry. To congratulate Nathan, Roland DG has awarded him with a complimentary seat on a Roland DG Academy course of his choice at the Clevedon or Walsall training centres. Speaking about the BSGA British Sign Awards 2015, Brett Newman, Managing Director for Roland DG (UK) Ltd, said: “We’ve had a great day at the awards, and it was a brilliant learning
experience for our own apprentices –we brought both of them along for the day to experience the event and help run our PRO-4 XR-640 wide format print-and-cut machine, which was on display prior to the ceremony, and they did fantastically. “On behalf of everyone at Roland DG, I would like to congratulate Nathan Aston on winning the award for ‘Roland DG Apprentice of the Year’ and we look forward to welcoming him onto a Roland DG Academy course soon. The apprentices nominated for this award demonstrate the abundance of young talent that is emerging within the sign industry and we are delighted to work alongside the British Signs and Graphics Association to acknowledge and celebrate this.” Roland DG has long been invested in growing the sign industry through the Roland DG Academy, which presents attendees with clear, practical and inspirational content that opens their eyes to new and profitable opportunities within the sign industry. The sponsorship of the ‘Roland DG Apprentice of the Year’ further underpins the Roland DG Academy’s commitment to support both seasoned professionals wanting to diversify and those new to the sign industry with educational courses. www.rolanddg.com / www.rolanddg.co.uk
APN Display purchases new VUTEk NOTTINGHAM based APN Display has upgraded its UV print technology with the purchase of a VUTEk H2000 LED UV hybrid printer from CMYUK, which they hope will open the door to new markets as well as add to their production capacity. APN Display, which services agency and trade customers both regionally and across the UK, specialises in 2D and 3D POS displays, and the H2000 installed in July is already blurring the lines between what was previously printed digitally or pressed on a screen or litho. “The H2000 is the next generation on from our previous UV machines - an Inca Eagle and Spyder V,” said Director Paul Nicholls. “It’s much faster with a higher quality print, and the new technology has reduced the need for separate printing processes and reduced the minimum numbers for cost effective print runs. “Firstly, with the new VUTEk we can now print onto clear material using white ink at the same time rather than printing on a digital machine then adding the white via a screen press. “This means shorter runs for applications such as window graphics become more economic — even
just one or two units — as set up and origination costs are lower and there’s less risk of spoilage, with the two print processes needed now reduced to one.” The company is also now using the H2000 to produce the 3D corrugated POS display units that it designs and manufactures. The higher resolution and flatbed facility means it can now digitally print jobs that would previously have been litho printed then laminated onto boards — again, the ability to print onto a wider range of substrates such as boards removes a process from the
workflow. CMYUK director Robin East said: “The EFI VUTEk H2000 Pro is a great printer for a company like APN Display that’s looking to both improve and diversify its output. “It has a number of available production and imaging options allowing print houses to configure a system that matches their needs today or when new opportunities arise. The H2000 also offers EFI’s UltraDrop Technology in six colours for more precise control and high definition quality, and handles rigid and sheeted media up to 80in wide
and up to 2in. thick with optional roll-to-roll production.” The time from installation of the printer to full production was just two weeks, and the APN Display team is looking forward to working closely with CMYUK in the future. “We have our own in-house design facility and we’ll be looking at new ways to make the most of the capabilities of this new machine, sharing our expertise and offering cutting edge solutions to our customers,” concluded Paul. www.cmyuk.com www.apndisplay.co.uk

ArtSystems launch Colortrac SmartLF Scan DURING ArtSystems special resellers event, ‘Focus on Innovation 2015’, the latest Colortrac innovation was unveiled to the UK. The Colortrac SmartLF Scan! is a range of two, wide format scanners that are light, self-contained, intuitively simple to use and completely portable. The new scanner has a built-in 6GB memory so operators can work wherever the job takes them, even without access to a computer. Supplied with its own tough carry-case the SmartLF Scan! also has semi-automated resolution control for simplicity of operation anywhere, in your own premises, on-site, or in the client’s offices. With a scanning width of either 610mm or 914mm the two scanners in the range weigh just 5.2kg and 7kg and yet have all the facilities a modern operator would expect. Wireless or Ethernet connection mean scans can be saved directly to the PC or the Cloud when in the office, or to a USB memory card when on site. ArtSystems’ Ted Freer, Sales Divisional Manager, Design, is enthusiastic about the possibilities opened up by these new additions to the
Colortrac portfolio. He says: “SmartLF Scan! units offer real entry level affordability and are fully portable, and by that I mean they are small and light enough that you can easily wheel them in their boxes onto the train, tube or into a taxi. What’s more, when you arrive on site or your client’s office you still get the high quality scans you would expect from the brand, and they’re wide format with an optical resolution of 600dpi. “When away from your PC you can make a scanned record of up to eight design changes or discussion documents and let your clients see how careful you’re being with their needs, you can even leave a copy of everything you’ve scanned on a
USB memory stick. And then, when you’re back at base, share the scans with your team and you’re good to go.” Based around a small Windows software file the scanners can work with originals up to 1270mm long and as small as 150mm wide with an accuracy to +/- one pixel or .02%. Freer concludes: “The SmartLF Scan! units tick every box when it comes to innovation and userfriendly precision, and they come in their own robust, wheeled boxes for ease of transport. They set their own benchmark amongst the very latest generation of wide format scanners.” www.artsystems.co.uk

Uninterrupted printing and reduced waste is aided by new printheads that incorporate a continuous ink circulation system to help prevent ink sedimentation and clogged nozzles, along with a nozzle check unit (NCU) that automatically detects and cleans the clogged nozzles. “Mimaki has always been a leader in the development of inkjet printers,” states Mike Horsten, General Manager Marketing EMEA at Mimaki Europe. “Recently, there has been growing demand for digital, on-demand, and plateless inkjet printing because of its ability to quickly provide high-mix and low-volume printing. The high performance UV inkjet printer UJF-7151plus enables high-precision ink dot placement and beautiful printing through
Mimaki’s proprietary technology and at top-level productivity. The market is growing — we’re keeping our finger on the pulse to deliver the solutions it needs.” Key features of the UJF-7151plus include a mechanical structure for highprecision printing and superior print-image quality control technology. Mimaki’s Advanced Pass System 4 (MAPS4) reduces banding and uneven colour printing with blurred boundaries and the Mimaki Fine Diffusion 1 (MFD1) reduces noise due to dithering through hybrid processing of patterns. The machine’s high print speed is delivered via six staggered printheads to achieve top-level productivity. Uninterrupted workflow as a result of highstability printing through an ink-circulating mechanism within the head is aided by the use of two proprietary technologies — NCU that automatically detects and recovers clogged nuzzles by cleaning them, thus reducing waste and the NRS reliable operating support package that ensures maximum uptime. The UJF-7151plus will be available through the specialist reseller network of exclusive UK and Irish Mimaki distributor, Hybrid Services Ltd from November 2015 and the company’s National Sales Manager – Industrial Products, Stuart Cole welcomes the addition to the range. “The UJF-7151plus offers a unique solution that combines peerless print quality with excellent productivity. Its distinctive size, industrial design (including the larger one litre ink bottles) along with cutting edge features set it apart and we’re very confident of a strong initial uptake.” www.hybridservices.co.uk
Papergraphics agrees exclusive deal with CWT PAPERGRAPHICS, the wide-format print specialist, has agreed an exclusive distribution partnership with CWT worktools to distribute its Flat Bed Applicator and Linear Cutter products to the UK, Holland and Belgium markets. The new exclusive agreement, which is effective immediately, will see Papergraphics distribute CWT’s Flat Bed Applicator, which provides a professional solution for large format print laminating. The flat bed applicator, or work table, offers a semi-automated laminating process which reduces production time by up to 85 percent. With manual laminating work requiring intense physical effort, it also reduces operator injuries while cutting down waste as human error during handling or application is eliminated. Capable of laminating soft or hard substrates up to 70mm or 2.7inches thick, the work table’s new innovative design merges glossy thin foil materials as well as heavier sheets with ease. The worktable design benefits from no cross-going overhead beam, improving operator access. In addition, the unique design protected traversing system provides a very smooth travel of the roll assembly. The table cover is made of hardened glass, which is unique for CWT laminators, with high quality LED-illumination now available on request. This provides many advantages for multi-layer applications, for example, where it helps to save both money and energy consumption. Thanks to the modular design of the work table, it is also easy to transport and install. The units are delivered in compact packages that are 80 percent smaller compared to other solutions. This means print professionals can have the mounting table installed by Papergraphics in a confined space or areas where access may be restricted. Nathan Atkins, Managing Director of Papergraphics, said: “We’re delighted to announce our exclusive partnership to distribute CWT’s innovative work table for laminating print materials. We have no doubt it will be well received in
the UK, Holland and Belgium. We’ve already set up the table in the demonstration area at our Crawley offices as well as at our new premises in Paisley, Scotland and look forward to welcoming print professionals to test these innovative solutions.” Martin Nilsson, Managing Director of CWT Worktools, said: “We are very excited about signing an exclusive distributor agreement with Papergraphics that covers both UK, Northern Ireland (non-exclusive), Holland and Belgium. We are confident that they will do our great products justice with their impressive organisation and customer base. The market response has already been overwhelming.” The distribution partnership will also provide Papergraphics with the exclusive delivery of CWT’s linear cutter capable of trimming media up to 17 foot (5.13 metres) in one single cut. It is suitable for a wide range of materials, including vinyl and fabrics, floor carpets, PVC and rubber. This exclusive distribution partnership marks another successful step in the Papergraphics journey to expand its services and position the company as a complete solutions provider. www.paper-graphics.com

14 | FEATURE | QUICK PRINT PRO | NOVEMBER 2015
Epson launches four SureColor SC-P pro printers AVAILABLE in a choice of 24 inch and 44 inch widths, and eight or ten colours, the new SureColor SC-P6000, SC-P7000, SC-P8000 and SCP9000 inkjet printers incorporate Epson’s exclusive PrecisionCore printhead technology to produce outstanding performance and long-lasting quality with ultra-precise control of dot size, shape and placement. The new easy-to-use, wide-gamut SureColor SC-P printers produce intense, vibrant colours and neutral black and white prints that remain crisp and clear thanks to the printers’ Advanced Black and White (ABW) mode. Using Epson’s eight-colour UltraChrome HD pigment-based ink-set, the SC-P8000 and SCP6000 have a wide colour gamut, improved lightfastness and are capable of producing neutral black and white prints. Ideal for producing professional photographs, fine art prints, and standard proofs they are an all-round, high quality Graphic Arts printing solution. Additionally, the SC-P9000 and SC-P7000 provide the ultimate proofing solution. Building upon Epson’s solid reputation in this market, both models ensure highly-accurate prints with colours that will remain consistent throughout the print run. Using Epson’s 10 colour UltraChrome HDX inkset, incorporating a new violet ink, both models can produce a wide spectrum of colours achieving 99% of the Pantone colour library for highly accurate spot colour reproduction, making these two printers the most colour accurate large format printers on the market utilising 10 colours or less. These models are also available with a light light black UltraChrome HDX ink configuration that replaces the violet ink making them ideally suited to high-end photographic and fine art applications that require the ultimate in print quality for both colour and monochrome reproduction.
All models are available bundled with Epson’s off carriage, inline SpectroProofer incorporating the ILS30 colorimeter, jointly developed with X-Rite. Conforming to the new ISO lighting and measurement standards – including M1 — this solution ensures consistent, repeatable colour accuracy regardless of media. The SpectroProofer solution also enables printer calibration performed with Epson’s new Color Calibration Utility, an easyto-use, fast calibration tool that can be used to ensure consistent colour across a fleet of printers. Because the calibration data is stored on the printer, support for multiple users is much simpler and the calibrated data can be used for all media types including third party. Ideal for long print runs, all models come with high-capacity cartridges, while the printers’
low power consumption can help save on energy costs. Additionally, thanks to a superior lightfastness, prints will continue to look their best long after they are created. In fact, prints on Premium Glossy Photo Paper can last up to 60 years Martin Johns, Market Development Manager, ProGraphics, Epson UK said: “Our technology and know-how has always helped us produce printers that exceed our customers’ expectations. This new range is no exception and, with our PrecisionCore technology, customers can be assured that the results will be fantastic quality, accurate and consistent over time.” The SureColor SC-P range will be available from 1st November 2015. www.epson.co.uk

Innovation to London Calling
An action-packed agenda and a James Bond-themed VIP night will ensure Duplo’s London Calling will be another unmissable event in the UK print industry calendar.
APOGEE SHOWCASE
H
UNDREDS OF VISITORS will also get a first hand view of one of the city’s iconic venues, Sunbeam Studios, in Ladbroke Hall, North Kensington, which was the site of the first purpose-built car factory and show room in the UK. Now celebrating its seventh year, London Calling has an enviable reputation for showcasing latest innovations from print finishing pioneer Duplo and its selected partners. But make sure you sign up soon on this dedicated microsite www.duplolondoncaliing.com to ensure your free entry. Added attractions for London Calling 2015 from 3-4 November will include at least six new product launches and the inaugural London meeting of the Duplo Owners’ Club focussing on the Best Bond for perfect binding solutions. There will be a meeting of the HP Young Entrepreneurs’ Network and a BPIF Apprentices’ Forum, as well as a PrintIT! School visit for winners of a competition – all designed to promote and showcase young talent into the print industry. Duplo’s most powerful all-inone digital colour multi-finishing system, the DC-746, gets its first UK showing at London Calling. Major new advantages of this slitter/cutter/ creaser include improved versatility and performance, a new waste management system, new end trim air blade and a wider range of formulating modules, which ensure there is no slowdown in productivity in any applications. Duplo’s Job Creator Software also allows the operator to create PDF templates, which include barcode and image recognition marks at the touch of a button. The DC-746 is also designed to open up new markets in direct mail, such as perforated tickets and coupons. Unveiled too will be the new 600i Duetto System – linking the 600 and 600i models into one system, which will be running with a DSF-2200 sheet-feeder. The launch will once again underline Duplo’s unrivalled
position as the provider of the widest range of finishing systems in the print industry. With ever-increasing focus on photobook technology, Duplo will also be launching the Powis PhotoPress system, a fast and easy way of turning single-side digital print into distinctive photobooks. It uses pressure instead of heat to laminate single-sided prints to Powis Signature sheets. Duplo is also launching the PFI COAT 300i system, which is a standalone, fully automated coater for applying an all-over UV varnish to give extremely high-value products from both digital and offset prints. Answering customer demands to introduce a cost-effective, tabletop version of its flagship model, the Fujipla ALM 3220 Automatic Laminator, is the global launch of the Fujipla ALM3230 system. Another ‘first’ will involve experts from the money-lending world providing practical advice for show goers on the range of options available when financing new assets. The finance partners on site will be Close Brothers, Clear Asset Finance, Compass Business Finance and Five Arrows Business Finance. Sarah Crumpler, Duplo UK Marketing Manager, said: “Together with our partners, at Duplo we’re incredibly excited to be at the final countdown to the start of London Calling, which will have ‘focus’ as its theme for 2015. London Calling is a unique event, which underpins our ongoing support for the print industry where we continuously focus on investing in customer service and support.
She added: “With our ongoing development of next-generation products and the first public showings of a number of systems, we know this event will provide great ideas and inspiration to help generate business growth and increased profitability for our growing numbers of customers.” www.duplouk.com www.sunbeamstudios.com
NEOPOST TO SHOWCASE COMMUNICATION
ACROSS the two-day event, Neopost will be exhibiting its innovative solutions, showcasing how its technology can enable businesses to deliver diversified, multi-channel communications and services. Indeed, with a customer base that includes organisations from all sectors, Neopost will be on hand to demonstrate its expertise and explain how to reinvigorate strategies to meet the market’s changing needs. “We’re very pleased to be a partner of London Calling and be exhibiting there once again,” said Antony Paul, marketing manager at Neopost. “The event attracts leading organisations in the industry and it’s a great opportunity to showcase what Neopost can do to enable effective multi-channel communication strategies. Furthermore, it’s a great chance to meet with customers and discover the challenges they continue to face, which enables us to keep innovating and remain the UK’s leading provider of mailing solutions.” www.neopost.co.uk
APOGEE will put the spotlight on the value of their independent approach and expertise in digital production systems. “We are delighted to be partnering Duplo at what has become a major annual event in the digital print and production calendar” said Gary Downey, Apogee’s Group Marketing Director. “Apogee’s expertise in production print makes us the only independent alternative to the OEMs and London Calling is a great opportunity for us to advise visitors on the best choice of technology for them.” “As well as providing independent advice our production specialists will be on hand to show visitors how to get the most from their technology, and the live workflows we will be demonstrating at London Calling will showcase personalised applications using a variety of processes that are precise, automated and attractive to the eye.” Apogee has a nationwide production operation with dedicated specialists in all areas including production print analysts, account managers, technical support, field service engineers and advanced client training, all working together to maximise the performance and uptime of clients. www.apogeecorp.com
VIVID VOICE
DAVID smith told QPP, “We are honoured to once again be invited by print finishing specialists Duplo to be one of their key partners at London Calling. We will be showcasing two of our Matrix Systems at the event, showing laminating options on one, whilst highlighting our new foiling effects on the other. www.vivid-online.com
SHOW REVIEW
A London Calling report will be published next month as we are at the time of going to press, in ‘pre-show’ anticipation.

Build it, and they will come – And you did, in your thousands!
Thanks to The Print Show organisers, our fellow exhibitors and most of all the 5384 visitors, for making this trade print event such a success. This review will be spread over the coming issues as not everyone has completely landed back from Birmingham and counted up the contacts made to follow up.
O
UR OWN STAND was inundated with some of our best friends in print and we met many new kindred spirits willing to share their recent successes and plans for the future. The UK’s frontline printers never cease to encourage me with their positive attitude to today’s opportunities in serving our eight million end users. We have taken instructions on what you want to see in your 2016 QPP magazines and the areas of growth are exciting and will be mutually rewarding with our suppliers. Chatting to the exhibitors and visiting suppliers, they are all firmly backing our sector of the print industry. We have been promised case study equipment to beta test pre-launch and Mark Spicer from Morgana has already followed up with a delivery of a desk top square back book finisher — watch this space to see how this has improved the presentation of print in our own Brighton print shop. Lots more to look forward to with a personalised gift shop online opportunity from Harrier. Their stand was very impressive. We will be producing our own anniversary photobook with them next year. The show encouraged team spirit with many big manufacturers also presenting their print partners including great demonstrations on the OKI stand with Caslon and the Magic Touch. QPP must thank our neighbours Intec Print Solutions for re-printing our nominated supplier forms and Presstek for replenishing our stands supply of QPP print quality test sheets and CSR
certificates all of which proved very popular with our visitors. We have a ton of print samples from Konica Minolta, Xerox, Ricoh, OKI Presstek, Riso, Intec, and X-Press. Also lots of LFP samples and finishing finesse you will want to aspire to. Our friends at Premier Paper covered all media in every weight and size that you could ever require, plus a great chat and professional advice, plus the gift of a rugby ball celebrating their Magno promotion. Marketing Director David Jones told QPP, “Quality, performance and consistency are the attributes that will enable the winning team to lift the Webb Ellis Cup, the same qualities that have kept Magno as the world’s most trusted coated paper for over twenty years”. The rugby themed Magno promotion has now ended, but the great work continues with probably the most exciting element of the promotion supporting junior/youth rugby with Magno. The top Magno customers will be invited to nominate a local junior or youth team to receive a team kit courtesy of Premier and the Magno promotion.”
PRINTIT! STUDENTS ARE BLOWN AWAY
THE charity Proskills’ exhibited at The Print Show and were blown away by the support and interest shown towards the PrintIT! Schools into Industry programme from visitors and exhibitors. Proskills’ were delighted to announce that the winner of the Print Show 2015 Mini Competition was Louis Wood, from St Ives’ School. All mini competition entries were judged online by a panel
of experts within the industry, who chose Louis’s outstanding work as the winning entry. He was awarded a brand new Lenovo laptop, sponsored by The Print Show, which was presented by Event Director, Chris Davies. The Print Show also donated three luxury hampers to the competition runner ups: Chloe Hess from St Ives’ School, Mia Hargreaves and April Whitely from the Morecambe Community High School, who were all delighted to receive them. Chris Davies, Event Director of The Print Show 2015 commented: “For me, the PrintIT! competition was one of the highlights of the event. The whole idea behind the show is to provide the industry with a blueprint for the future, and what better way to do that than to get some of the best young minds in the UK involved with print. I would like to thank all the exhibitors that took part in the tours, for taking the time to speak to the students about the print industry and the many opportunities it offers. I would also like to say thank you to the PrintIT! and Proskills’ teams for not only helping run and organise the tours, but also for supporting our inaugural event. I look forward to welcoming them back next year for our 2016 event, which will run at the NEC from October 11th to 13th.” Both St. Ives and Morecombe High School attended the show to not only receive their awards but were also given exclusive tours of the latest printing technologies. Their tour began at St Bride Foundation’s Traditional Print Masterclass where they learnt about traditional letterpress printing, wood engraving, bookbinding and linocutting. Their second stop was at Morgana, where the students were given demonstrations of Morgana’s finishing products and systems such as DigiFold Pro, AutoCreaser Pro and booklet making systems. This was followed by a stop at Ricoh, where the students were shown an impressive large format display printer and given a talk on how Ricoh’s
NOVEMBER 2015 | QUICK PRINT PRO | SHOWTIME | 19
office imaging equipment and production print solutions work. The next stop was Vivid Laminating, where students were given demonstrations of small and wide format laminating systems, cutters and binding systems. Then last, but not least stop on the tour was Konica Minolta, where students learnt about ‘the art of the possible’ with Konica’s new technology, such as their lightboxes where images are printed onto acrylic. Quote from Gizela Daemi-Rashidi, teacher of St Ives School: “My students were really impressed with the technology in the machines that created spot varnishing on posters and the printing on Perspex by Konica Minolta. Seeing the old methods of printing at the Traditional Print Masterclass next to the 3D printing machines at Antalis was amazing. There now seems to be a machine that can do almost any process within the chain of creating a printed product. Jonathan Ledger, CEO of Proskills UK Group commented: “Many thanks to the fabulous Print Show team for affording the Proskills’ PrintIT! team the opportunity to share the wonders of print with schools and for sponsoring The Print Show Mini Competition. Also, huge thanks to all the PrintIT! friends who showcased print to the students. The Print Show demonstrated the huge value that print has in the UK and certainly opened the students eyes to the career potential that’s out there. It was also a great opportunity for Proskills to talk to print companies about how best to get involved with PrintIT!“ The show was a fantastic opportunity for Proskills’ to spread the word about how PrintIT! can change the future of print and how more print, paper and packaging companies can get involved in the programme To find out more about sponsorship opportunities and involvement, please visit: www.proskills.co.uk/schoolsintoindustry
SUCCESS FOR SMART PRINT
SMART Print had a fantastic time at the Print Show and thanked Luke, Nicky, Karis and their team for their hard work and support… ‘A great bunch of people and an excellent show!!’ Additional thanks went to Mitesh Vara, Ian Mitchell, Sejal Waghela and Mike Holyoake, all of Xerox UK for their amazing support in helping to make this event such a big success for Smart Print. Their stand featured information on Xerox document publishing, wide format printing, extended digital colour gamut with the Xerox iGen and the acclaimed Xerox Versant 80.
They were also demonstrating a 3D printer, something that received a lot of attention and was eventually ‘given away’ in a prize draw. The photo shows Martin Eastwood, Smart Print’s resident 3D guru talking with Karis Copp of The Print Show team. Karis drew the winning ticket and the winner was announced as Adam Court of Full Square Leicester who will soon be receiving his 3D printer. ‘Congratulations to Adam and many thanks to Karis’ www.smartprint-uk.com
OKI SHOWCASED NEW GRAPHICS ARTS SOLUTIONS
VIVID SHOW THREE NEW TECHNOLOGIES
VIVID’S best-selling Matrix OPP Film Laminating System can now add specialist finishing effects to print, including foiling, spot UV-style effects and holographic finishes. Sales Director Richard Marlow said: “The Matrix doesn’t require special dies to create these new effects. It’s achievable due to the extra pressure from the pneumatic rollers. The process to create such effects on-demand still works by using heat transfer technology, but at a fraction of the cost of producing individual dies for each job. For those with a Pneumatic Matrix already in-house, being able to offer these stunning effects to customers offers huge cost savings and even a new source of revenue”. The Leicestershire-based firm also demonstrated their new Feeder for the Matrix 530 Systems. “The all-new Feeder uses patented underfed technology for prints, speeding up production and finishing times,” continued Marlow “It’s a completely modular system and can retrofit to the existing Matrix”. Along with new Matrix features, Vivid also showcased the new Easymount Air to the UK print industry. Vivid’s Technical Manager Gavin Ward said: “The Easymount Air is a revolutionary product in the wide format lamination and mounting market. The patented technology uses one of the most advanced concepts ever seen in a wide format laminator. Pneumatic air pressure controls the laminating rollers, allowing you to mount and laminate with incredible accuracy and speed”. The pneumatic air allows the roller to adjust to the exact thickness and pressure required, giving faster production times. The new technology also allows the roller to float down; ensuring Foamex and Correx boards aren’t crushed. When the rollers achieve the correct board thickness, they can be locked in place to keep the required gap, making board feeding more accurate. www.vivid-online.com
GROUNDBREAKING graphics arts solutions for professional print applications, which provide added revenue-making opportunities were the highlight of OKI Systems UK ‘s stand. Centre stage was the five colour digital LED ES9541 which can print white or clear on colour media, offering print shops and designers the opportunity to take on high gloss finish short-run jobs without the need for expensive lithographic equipment. This printer is also highly versatile when it comes to media. OKI’s pioneering digital LED technology enables a complete range of sizes form A6 to SRA3 or banners up to 1.3m on weights up to 360 gsm single-sided and 320 gsm duplex. As a value added solution, OKI has teamed up with foiling experts, Caslon. “When applying a foil application to print jobs like invitations or certificates for example, you can provide your customer with a true luxury finished product. We are very pleased to have Caslon alongside OKI on our stand and see them as a value added solution to our products and offering,” added Andrew Hall, marketing manager, Oki Systems UK. In addition, the PC Pro recommended OKI C711WT is the ideal printer to provide the flexibility of printing on different substrates including glass bottles, leather and plastics. This paves the way for print shops to innovate further and add to their capabilities by printing packaging or offering personalised products on the spot. “Achieving vibrant full colour printing plus white is an advantage to any print or graphics business offering individual and short run display materials, bespoke stationery, concepts, t-shirts or promotional merchandise. White toner printing offers unprecedented capability for printing, proofing and production,” adds Hall. OKI Distributor for the C711WT, The Magic Touch was on hand to demonstrate the latest in transfer media applications and advise on how to maximise your investment. Following Oki Data Corporations recent acquisition of Seiko I Infotech Inc, the ColorPainter M64-s solvent based wide format printer was also on display on the Signmaster stand. “The Print Show has proved to be the ideal platform for us to showcase our breadth of solutions to the graphic arts sector,” concludes Hall. www.okieurope.com

Just throw some pixels at it...
When asked how they find their material, comedians often say they take their inspiration from real life and the things that people say, and regular readers will know that Martin Christie often find the source of comment in this column from the things customers come out with in day to day dealings at the print shop counter.
A
S MOST OF you will know from experience, it’s a constant source of strange requests, and diverse knowledge that can produce statements that can be both hilarious and irritating in equal measure. It was recently reported that a national survery concluded that perhaps a quarter of the UK population was not computer literate to any significant degree. And while this may seem remarkable, considering the number of day to day actions that require even basic interaction with a screen and a keypad, it is probably correct. It is reflected at the print shop by the fact that there is still a need for basic copying, and we are still some way from a universal digital world. It may come as a surprise when a customer, asked if he has the original artwork, produces a dog-eared business card out of his wallet, but it is still the reality for a number of consumers. But that number are probably greater than those that are completely IT literate, in being able to produce completely professional files suitable for print for example. What the survey does not investigate is how many of the other three quarters of the population have skills greater than just pushing keys and sending email. The ease of doing basic things electronically has disguised the fact that the more complicated things are just that — complicated. Just how complicated is often difficult to explain to those who just want to press a button and make it happen, and are impatient with results. The naivety is sometimes breathtaking, as with the customer told that his image (from a social networking site) was not of sufficient resolution for printing, asked a member of staff “can’t you just throw some pixels at it?” Even if it was said half seriously it illustrates the fundamental issue that modern people know a little bit about the technical stuff, but not enough to really understand it or use it competently. And that’s what causes so many problems, in the print industry, and no doubt many others. The technology is new but the principle is not. The poet Alexander Pope wrote many centuries ago the often misquoted line ‘a little learning is a dangerous thing’. How that phrase still passes the test of time in the twenty first century. All of which is why the traditional customer who has no computer knowledge and freely admits it, is often easier to deal with than the ones who consider themselves qualified graphic designers, or photographers. Even those who have the right equipment may not know how to use it properly and the ubiquitous App has put creative ambition in the hands of the mobile millions. Because they have that personal input, they won’t take too kindly to being told that it is not suitable, and it is not easy to explain why unless you have considerably more knowledge and experience, and they are equally prepared to take the advice. That’s why the job at the print shop counter has got more difficult: not just that people are becoming more impatient and ruder even if it is true. Understanding the importance of file size – physical dimension and resolution – is vital to preparing files for print, but quite irrelevant for images exchanged on mobile devices through websites and email with software that may automatically resample the content. And that’s where the lack of comprehension causes problems. If you cannot actually see the difference between a kilobyte and a megabyte or even a gigabyte, then you may not grasp the difference until it causes problems further down the line. Early digital days checking file size was instinctiive because of limited processing power, memory capacity and the like, and the limited amount you could email successfully. Modern processors in all manner of devices can deliver shed loads of data instantly so the actual mass tends to be overlooked until the cumulative effect causes a log jam or a crash in the
system. There has to be an overload eventually and that’s where the print outlet is vulnerable because you have the accumulation of all those individual customers piling up their data on your electronic doorstep. As well as processing digital files, sorting and archiving data is an additional problem because not only does in take up hard drive space, but memory in that any program sophisticated enough to remember where you have put things, will use up a lot of thinking power. You also have to have some sort of archiving policy to instruct the software where to store the data, unless you are using a sophisticated system like Extensis which can catalogue keywords as well as titles, dates and origins as well as generating a low resolution thumbnail of most image file formats so that a library can be rapidly scanned. For all of the reliance on digits, a visual record is still the quickest way to recognise and retrieve an item. Extensis has the advantage in that it can archive files across a network to provide backup, and can be set up to run automatically. Well worth looking at if archives are getting out of hand. The days of having a box of backup cds, conveniently labelled by date, are long gone. Exstensis file storage software is available as a thirty day trial to see if it will suit you. There are a good number of other archiving programs available and you only have to search the internet to find them, but Extensis is the only one I have used and can recommend as a result. I will try and review some of the alternatives in a future issue but any feedback from other users would be useful.
NOVEMBER 2015 | QUICK PRINT PRO | DIGITAL IMAGING | 23
Ironically some of the need for archiving has been diminished by the very fact that file sharing has become so instant, and so universal. It has thrown some of the onus back on the customer to save a copy of their original, as they are generating it. And the short term, quick turnaround society tends to see items as so much more disposable with a short shelf life. One of the crucial things in this print-on-demand workplace is an Original efficient workflow at the point where files are received and processed because so much of the input is pre-prepared by the owner, but not quite ready for print and there is a matter of just how much you can do, and how much time you can spend, without actually insisting that work is chargeable. There is no hard and fast rule because you can’t – although it would be nice – have a Image size running meter on your counter like a taxi cab. You have to judge every job on its merit and potential profit. Often a fine judgement, especially if you are having to battle with a customer who has the ‘it looks all right on my screen’ syndrome. I was called to the counter recently to talk to a customer whose file had printed grey but which she insisted should be white and was Layers complaining that it must be our printer. Not only did it look grey on our screen but when I used the colour picker in Photoshop it was evidently grey. The customer announced that she didn’t use Photoshop but some free app she had on her iPhone and was still not convinced it wasn’t our machines that were messing up her job. Sometimes you just have to accept you are not going to win and walk away. Adjustment A decent working knowledge of the basics of Photoshop is an essential part of the prepress workflow as it’s the one tool to give you a read-out of the exact size – physical dimensions and pixel count – and colour of a file, and file not just digital images. This information may not be spotted if an unknown file is imported and laid-up in InDesign for example, resulting in wastage of time, paper and toner. It may take a few minutes to hold up production, pulling an item into Photoshop but it will be safer in the process. Most commonly the file is too small, in both size and content because the creator doesn’t realise that any file that is pixel dependent is just that. You can make it bigger but you are still juggling the same pixels, and that will be at the cost of resolution. Less often the file may be too big for its intended use, in which case it will be worthwhile resizing it in Photoshop to speed printing. Again, recently we had a customer with a need for a poster and flyers package – the fish and chips of the print room. But the very nice poster he had designed as an Adobe PSD was over 800Mb, and laid up eight to print on A3 would have meant trying to rip over 6Gb of information to the printer network.
vivid-online.com
A PSD file is always going to be big which is fine for large format printing, but can easily be reduced in size by flattening it (if it contains layers) and saving it as a smaller JPG. By bringing down the physical dimensions – length and width – but not resampling the pixels you can take a whole lot out of the file size and consequent processing size. As long as you compress the JPG no more than 80 per cent there will be no appreciable lack of quality. Alternatively saved as TIF files with LZW compression; there can be a useful file size saving although, unlike JPGs, TIFs can still contain layers that will keep the size higher. I generally avoid recommending the use of saving Photoshop files as PDFs (‘saving’ and ‘exporting’ PDF files are two different processes, Deano) because although a lot of work comes in with that file format, there are possible issues with hidden layers and information depending on how it is saved. With a solid image you are not going to have any problems with stray fonts, hidden layers, or mysterious objects that can pop up in printing. What you see is what you get. Although layers can cause problems for printing, they are one of the most useful aspects for editing in Photoshop, and often least used. Most importantly they can be used to edit non-destructively which means that you are not altering the original file. That way you can go back to the original to compare or restore a previous state. Even in the old days of copying it was evident that you could go on forever making changes to colour, density and the like, only to accept that it was probably just as good in the first place! Using layers you can duplicate a copy over the original (though this increases the file size) or create an Adjustment Layer (Layers > New Adjustment Layer). In the former you can make any alternations in the Photoshop editing menu as well as blending presets in the Layers options. In the latter you have the various editing sliders in levels, curves etc. With both you have the ability to reduce the overall opacity of the layer, thus reducing the amount of the effect, and therefore have a lot of very fine control over the resulting image without changing anything on the original. You can flatten the file to print to save size always remembering to save it as a copy or a print file so as not to overwrite the original. Non-destructive editing is an important part of the immensely powerful Photoshop toolbox and is what separates it from most other image handling options. Adobe Lightroom also features non-destructive editing of photo files, but does not use layers, or is able to handle text or other objects. This is a basic overview of the use of layers, but there is a lot more than can be done to improve workflow and increase efficiency by using these and similar features that I will expand in future columns. www.extensis.com

PEFC highlights WBCSD Sustainable Procurement FAVINI, a leader in the production of innovative graphic specialties made of natural raw materials (cellulose, algae, fruit and nuts, etc) introduces the new Majestic visual book, entirely taking inspiration from the vibrant colours of peacock feathers. PEFC is highlighting the fact that informed procurement choices can support sustainable forest management, help protect workers health and the rights of those who depend on forests. Increasingly, those involved in public sector and corporate purchasing are setting ambitious targets which aim to eliminate deforestation from their supply chains. These matters are given further credence in The World Resources Institute & World Business Council for Sustainable Development Sustainable Procurement Guide for Wood and Paper-based Products, which is designed to help procurement professionals make informed choices and gain a better understanding of the challenges involved in the development and implementation of procurement policies for paper, packaging and solid wood products. For a company sourcing wood-based products, knowing their supply chains helps to increase transparency and reduce risks. Sourcing from responsibly-managed forests, such as those certified to PEFC’s Sustainable Forest Management standard, demonstrates an organisation’s support for well-managed forests and helps grow markets for certified forest products. This useful guide identifies 10 key aspects, including legal, environmental and social issues, that underpin sustainable sourcing of wood and paper based products and provides useful tools to help tackle these challenges:
SOURCING AND LEGALITY ASPECTS ORIGIN — Where do the products come from? INFORMATION ACCURACY — Is information about the products credible? LEGALITY — Have the products been legally produced?
ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS BLUE & TAKO

THE international packaging and paper group Mondi is launching a new campaign, “Our inspiration: nature’s brilliant colours”, which ideally links Color Copy’s outstanding colour reproduction and Mondi’s commitment to sustainable development: From now to 15th November 2015 Mondi is hosting a photo competition, in which participants are invited to upload their best wildlife pictures and share how they have captured nature’s brilliant colours. “Color Copy’s excellent colour reproduction makes it possible to have those brilliant pictures and memories not only in our minds, but to also capture them on printed paper to share with others and for posterity. Our new campaign is about emphasising Color Copy’s unrivalled colour reproduction as well as our commitment to sustainability, each and every day,” says Johannes Klumpp, Marketing and Sales Director for Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper, Europe and International. Photo Contest — capture nature’s brilliant colours — Exotic fish in the ocean, amphibians with vivid colour markings to ward off predators or the radiant wings of a butterfly are just a few examples of the mesmerising colours and patterns found in nature that serve as inspiration for graphic designers everywhere. The ten best photographs in the Color Copy contest, chosen via public voting on the online platform, will be awarded prizes. A professional jury will select the winner out of the top ten finalists, whose photograph will also be part of the new Color Copy campaign “Our inspiration: Nature’s brilliant colours.” The first prize is a guided photo-safari for two persons to South Africa, one of the world’s most fascinating natural landscapes and home of the Mondi Group. One brand — a wide array of applications - Introduced in 1989, Color Copy was the first paper worldwide to be specially designed for use in digital colour laser systems. The FSC certified and CO2 neutral paper has set the benchmark for brilliant printing results, especially when it comes to vibrant colour reproduction and proven runnability, providing maximum machine productivity and cost savings with regards to maintenance and servicing. The colour gamut – making colours come to life - Realistic photo printouts depend on various factors, such as the printing technology, press, amount and type of ink/dry toner and of course paper. Buyers Lab (BLI), the industry’s leading independent research authority, tested Color Copy on a total of 11 different printing devices. “In reality there are billions of colours visible to the eye,” said BLI’s European Laboratory Manager, Martin Soane. “The printing industry traditionally mixes cyan, magenta, yellow and black (CMYK) to reproduce these. Depending on the printing device and paper type, there are limitations when it comes to the reproduction of accurate colours — called the colour gamut. In BLI’s test, Mondi’s Color Copy paper delivered very good gloss and density results on 11 different laser and inkjet printing devices and achieved an outstanding colour gamut throughout the test,” he added. More information about the Color Copy portfolio, local dealers and the photo contest, is available at www.mondigroup.com/colorcopy.

Direct-to-textile MTEX Technologies’ open day event AROUND 30 companies looking to expand their business through a move into the soft signage industry attended MTEX Technologies’ recent open day. During the event they were given an in depth look at the three MTEX direct-to-textile printers dedicated to the wide format sign and display industry (the 5032Pro, the 5032HS and the Blue), and a demonstration of the complete digital direct-to-textile print process from start to finish. The event was certainly very well received, with orders placed on the day for an MTEX 5032Pro, two MTEX 5032HS’s and two MTEX Blues. Stewart Bell, MTEX Technologies MD said: “I think both ourselves and our visitors were delighted with this event, where customers had the chance to talk to the MTEX team and compare each printer for speed and suitability for their existing
business. There was a lot of interest in the different applications such as flag and display for exhibition, but also in the stunning quality that we produced for lightbox applications. “We discussed the workflow so that customers could fully understand the print and fixation process, the application, sizing and then the cutting or sewing finishing from Atech. Seeing the complete process working in a single dedicated space helped them see how direct-totextile could fit into their own production area. “In general, the visitors were particularly impressed by the inline sublimation fixation on all three devices, and the robust build of the machines along with the software and operational interfaces certainly wowed customers.” As well as inviting clients to the working showroom in Leicestershire, MTEX will also be offering
dedicated factory visits this month for customers who wish to see the machines being built. A film from the event can be seen at http://youtu.be/yyoYTU2v3Uk or for more information go to www.mtex.eu.
Sell No-Minimum orders Print on finger posts with minimal effort
NO-MINIMUM. CO.UK is an automated web-toprint system designed to process small orders of printed promotional products quickly and easily. Users go online, select from an extensive range of quality products, and then upload their artwork or choose from a large library of royalty-free images. They then position and resize the artwork as they wish, add text using an intuitive tool, and see a real-time representation of how the design will look on their chosen product. Once they place the order, it is sent straight to print on the latest digital technology, then dispatched directly to the customer in plain packaging. No-Minimum offers the dual benefits of an intuitive web-based interface with cutting-edge printing technology behind the scenes, and because the system is so efficient, branded promotional products can be turned around in industry-beating lead times. No-Minimum can open up new business from organisations for whom minimum order quantities were previously a barrier to buying promotional merchandise. For example, a small restaurant would not need to order 500 promotional items, but through No-Minimum they could equip their dozen or so staff with branded pens and bottle openers. Print outlets can also get their own free No-Minimum eCommerce site, which they can customise with their own branding, and then sit back while customers place orders themselves. The site is easy to set up and configure, while the invoice-free payment system also reduces admin and associated costs. The award-winning No-Minimum platform allows print professionals to process orders with little to no intervention on their part, therefore protecting their margins on smaller quantity sales. To find out more, email support@no-minimum.co.uk or call 01252 796894.
WHEN Rotherham MBC decided to update, expand and co-ordinate town centre pedestrian wayfinding signage, they chose the Stylos finger post system manufactured by William Smith. “Having worked with William Smith and used the Stylos system in the past, it was the logical choice to continue the partnership,” observes Rotherham MBC’s Richard Pardy. Over the years a number of changes had taken place in the town centre, including relocation of the Council’s services and the library to a single dedicated building. A review was, therefore, carried out of existing pedestrian finger post signs, their locations and the information they provided, with a view to upgrading, improving and updating the town centre finger post signing strategy. Due to the changes required in order to update information, and the effects of wear and tear and vandalism over the years, it was decided that these should be replaced. Around 45 new Stylos finger post units have been installed with new arm and cap designs, with bolder text in white on a black background, and a protective overlaminate film was added to enable the removal of graffiti without damage to the sign face. Base collars were also added to complement the style of lighting columns and bollards used in the town centre. “The new design provides a clean and consistent look to the wayfinding scheme in Rotherham, yet it’s in keeping with the style of the town centre,” Mr. Pardy emphasises. “In addition, the increase in the number of signs aims at closing gaps found in the old route system and also directs pedestrians to destinations further afield that were previously either not signed or didn’t exist when the original pedestrian wayfinding scheme was implemented.” The Stylos finger posts have also been adapted to accommodate 3-D printed touch points which contain QR codes and have NFC chips embedded within them, enabling visitors to access Hello City and Shop Local information. Stylos is a flexible yet robust and vandal resistant system that is easy to install. It can be designed to fit in with any environment, whether rural, urban, historic or modern. Stylos fingerpost and display panel signs can be supplied as complete units or in component form, ready to assemble. www.stylossignsystem.co.uk / www.williamsmith.co.uk

New TX300P-1800 Mimaki for direct-to-textile printing LEADING manufacturer of wide-format inkjet printers, Mimaki has announced that it will be introducing a brand-new direct-to-textile inkjet printer at ITMA 2015 in Milan, Italy, from 12th — 19th November. ITMA is the world’s most established textile and garment machinery exhibition, bringing together industry leaders for a discussion on emerging trends and innovative solutions. Mimaki will debut theMimaki TX300P-1800, an innovative 1.8m roll-to-roll directto-textile inkjet printer in Hall 18, Stand C104. “The TX300P-1800 is designed to meet the market demand for smaller lot sizes, faster delivery times and the ability to quickly produce samples,” explains Mike Horsten, General Manager Marketing of Mimaki EMEA. “We are also mindful of the shift in textile production from both analogue to digital and from centralised to distributed production. We envision a day not too far in the future when consumers will be able to download or create their own patterns rather than being limited to commercially available designs. The TX300P-1800, which is available with a variety of ink types and produces very high quality, is ideal for this new distributed model of textile printing.” Designed specifically for direct-to-textile printing, the Mimaki TX300P-1800 eight colour inkjet printer features a new printhead that ejects ink droplets at high speed to ensure accurate ink placement with a high head gap. This makes the printer ideal for
printing high quality images on all types of fabrics, including thicker and textured materials. Other features of the TX300P-1800 include print resolution of up to 1,080dpi with drop sizes ranging from 6 to 24pl. Small droplets create beautiful high-resolution printing, and large droplets are useful for high-speed printing. Print speeds more than twice as fast as that of a conventional printer makes the TX300P capable of printing up to 68m²/hour and based on Mimaki’s unique and reliable techniques developed over years of textile inkjet printer research and development, the TX300P has stable textile transport that maintains optimum tension. Available in the UK and Ireland from December 2015 through exclusive Mimaki distributor, Hybrid Services Ltd; the TX300P-1800 is testament to Mimaki’s heritage in digital textile printing. The new machine’s predecessor, the Tx2-1600, has been used for textile printing worldwide for the last 14 years and Hybrid’s national sales manager, Textile and Apparel, Stephen Woodall explains; “Mimaki’s expertise in the digital textile market is undisputed and the release of the new model confirms its ongoing commitment to the sector. The TX300P-1800 is set to be an exciting addition to Mimaki’s textile and apparel portfolio with such versatility of printing onto almost any type of natural or man-made fabric.” The TX300P is compatible for use with
sublimation dye, disperse dye, pigment, reactive dye, and acid dye inks to meet a wide range of application needs. Sublimation dye inks are available at commercial launch with other inks following soon. These 2L ink packs enable uninterrupted printing on longer runs, which are assisted by automatic detection and cleaning of clogged nozzles. The Nozzle Recovery System ensures that good nozzles are used as substitutes when clogged nozzles are not recovered after cleaning. Mimaki offers the TX300P with a choice of powerful digital front ends; Mimaki RasterLink 6 or TxLink3 Lite. The latter offers simple RGB and CMYK colour replacement on raster and vector data to more accurately achieve corporate and other special colours, as well as the ability to produce different colour patterns. The production of large, seamless patterns from a single image, including repeat and mirror patterns is possible, along with the simple creation of multi-colour ICC profiles using Mimaki’s unique profile wizard. “We are looking forward to hearing what ITMA attendees have to say about the TX300P-1800,” Horsten adds. “We think its quality, speed and affordability will generate ideas about many new opportunities in the eyes of visitors, and we look forward to working with them to change the way textile printing is accomplished in the future.” www.hybridservices.co.uk

The beefy attendant leaned over the bar and fixed a withering glare on his customer. “Listen, buddy,” he growled. “See those two big guys on the left? They’re professional salesmen. And that huge fellow on your right is a world-class print development advisor. That guy in the corner is a champion copier consultant. And I have had three sales jobs with Canon, Ricoh and Xerox. Now,” he continued, “are you absolutely positive you want to go ahead and tell your dumb salesman joke here?” “Nah, I guess not,” the printer replied. “I wouldn’t want to have to explain it five times.”
TIME FOR A PUNT A group of 3rd, 4th, and 5th year students, accompanied by two female teachers, went on a field trip to the local race course to learn about thoroughbred horses and the supporting industry. When it was time to take the children to the toilet, it was decided that the girls would go with one teacher and the boys would go with the other. The teacher assigned to the boys was waiting outside the men’s room when one of the boys came out and told her that none of them could reach the urinal. Having no choice, she went inside and began hoisting the little boys up by their arm pits, one by one. As she lifted one, she couldn’t help but notice that he was unusually well endowed. Trying not to show that she was staring, the teacher said, ‘You must be in the 5th.’ ‘No, ma’am,’ he replied. ‘I’m in the 7th, riding Silver Arrow, but thanks for the lift.’

To some people, marriage is a word, to others, it’s a sentence. It’s better to love a short person than not a tall. My desire to be a dermatologist was only skin deep. Those who get too big for their britches will be exposed in the end. Smokers are the same as everyone else; just not as long. Two can live as cheaply as one, for half as long. Two goldfish were in a tank. One says to the other: ‘How do we drive this thing?’ I always wanted to be somebody, but I should have been more specific. A friend once dated a very peculiar whisky maker, but he loved her still. A cannibal ate a missionary and got a taste for religion. I went to buy some camouflage trousers today, but I couldn’t find any.
MORE SHORTS… WELL IT’S NEARLY CHRISTMAS A local balloon factory had to close due to inflation, it was quite a blow. A patient went to see the psychiatrist wearing only Clingfilm for shorts. The psychiatrist said: ‘Well, I can clearly see your nuts’. According to Santa’s lawyer, all of his little helpers are subordinate clauses. Two psychiatrists pass each other; one says hello and the other one wonders what he meant by it. A tourist had to get an eye test while visiting an Alaskan island, but it turned out to be an optical Aleutian. My pet centipede just died. I suppose I shouldn’t be too surprised; it was on its last legs. I bought eight legs of venison for £40; is that two deer? I was thinking about making a comeback, but I haven’t been anywhere. Don’t read a pop-up book about giraffes unless you wear glasses. My genetic insanity is very fit and healthy; it runs in the family. If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the precipitate. Six out of seven dwarfs are not Happy, but only one out of seven is Grumpy. Think outside the box; it’s too late once you’re in it. I took the shell off my racing snail to try and speed it up, but it just made it sluggish. I’m confused; oh hang on, maybe I’m not. Why can’t you starve in the desert? Because of the sand which is there. Why did the scientist fit his front door with an old-fashioned knocker? He was a Nobel Prize winner. 5/4ths of people have problems with fractions.
A truck loaded with Vicks Vapo Rub overturned on the motorway; Police have confirmed there will be no congestion for eight hours.
SHOW STOPPERS
OLD JOKE. WORTH AN AIRING A man visited the doctor. “Doctor, I have terrible flatulence, I have it all the time.” “Please undress so I can examine you”, said the doctor picking up a long pole with a brass hook on the end. “My goodness doctor what are you going to do with that!” yelled the man. The doctor smiled and said: “I’m just going to open that top window.”
The next few ditties where collected at the Print Show; What do you call the wife of a hippie? Mississippi. What do you get if you cross a motorway with a wheelbarrow? Run over. Why do ducks have webbed feet? To put out fires. Why do elephants have flat feet? To put out burning ducks. There are three kinds of people; those who can count and those who THE REAL MEANING can’t. OF HOTEL SLOGANS Borrow money from pessimists; they don’t expect it back. Old world charm / No bath How can you tell when a salesman Options galore / Nothing is is lying? Their lips are moving. included The economy is so bad that the No extra fees / No extras Mafia is starting to lay off judges. Nominal fee / Outrageous charge Money talks. The trouble is, it only knows one word; goodbye. Standard / Sub-standard Money isn’t everything, but it does Deluxe / Standard keep the children in touch. Superior / One free shower cap Always remember that you are Cozy / Small unique; just like everyone else. All the amenities / Two free shower The healthiest part of a doughnut is caps the hole. Unfortunately, you have to eat through the rest of the doughnut Plush / Top and bottom sheets to get there.
CARE; COLOURFUL JOKES I have friends who swear they dream in colour but it’s just a pigment of their imagination. What’s green and smells like yellow paint? Green paint.
NEW ENGAGEMENT RING A very excited mother asked her daughter: Well, what happened when you showed the girls in the sales office your new engagement ring? Did they all admire it? Her daughter replied: Better than that, four of them recognised it.
TALKING PARROT Erica is walking out of a movie theatre at the same time as a man with a parrot on his shoulder. Erica turns to the man and says, “Your parrot actually seemed to understand the movie”. It looked around during the boring parts, it paid close attention to the dramatic parts, it even “squawked” during the funny parts. I don’t understand how that can be. The man turns to Erica and says “I don’t understand it either... he didn’t like the book at all”.
A DOWNED HARE
I was driving down the road when I saw a lady standing by her car. When I pulled over to see if I could help she turned around holding a rabbit. She explained that she had run over the rabbit and she thought it was going to die. I so wanted to help her I went back to my car and came back with a can of spray. I sprayed some in the rabbits’ mouth and it twitched its’ head a little. I waited a little while and sprayed some more in it’s mouth and it twitched its head a couple of times. Not much later I sprayed more in it’s mouth and the rabbit sprang from her arms and ran to the fence by the field, stopped, turned around and waived its’ paw at us. We watched it run 50 ft., stop, turn and wave it’s paw at us. The lady looked at me in amazement and said, “WHAT WAS THAT YOU GAVE THAT RABBIT?” I replied, “Oh just a little hair restorer with permanent wave.”

SIZE MATTERS A husband and wife are trying to set up a new password for their computer. The husband puts, “Mypenis,” and the wife falls on the ground laughing because on the screen it says, “Error. Not long enough.”
GET ON YOUR BIKE Motorists, enjoy the freedom of cycling by removing your windscreen, sticking half a melon skin on you head, then jumping red lights and driving the wrong way up one way streets.
GREAT REASONS TO BE A GUY... Phone conversations are over in 30 seconds flat. You know stuff about tanks. A five-day holiday requires only one suitcase. You can open all your own jars. Dry cleaners and hair cutters don’t rob you blind. You can go to the bathroom without a support group. You can leave the motel bed unmade. You can kill your own food. You get extra credit for the slightest act of thoughtfulness. Wedding plans take care of themselves. If someone forgets to invite you to something, he or she can still be your friend. Your underwear is £6 for a threepack. If you are 34 and single, nobody notices. Everything on your face stays its original colour. You can quietly enjoy a car ride from the passenger’s seat. Three pairs of shoes are more than enough. You don’t have to clean if the meter reader is coming. Car mechanics tell you the truth. You can quietly watch a game with your buddy for hours without ever thinking: ‘He must be mad at me.’ Grey hair and wrinkles only add

character. Wedding dress: £2,000. Tuxedo rental: 75 quid. You can drop by to see a friend without bringing a little gift. If another guy shows up at the party in the same outfit, you just might become lifelong friends. Your pals will never trap you with: ‘So, notice anything different?’ You are not expected to know the names of more than five colours. You know which way to turn a nut on a bolt. You almost never have strap problems in public. You are unable to see wrinkles in your clothes. The same hairstyle lasts for years, maybe decades. You don’t have to shave below your neck. Your belly usually hides your big hips. One wallet and one pair of shoes, one colour, all seasons
MODERN BUREAUCRACY: SAY LESS WITH MORE The ten commandments, 300 words; the US Declaration of Independance, 1300 words; the EU regulations on the export of duck eggs, 26000 words.
ROAD TRIP While on a road trip, an elderly couple stopped at a roadside restaurant for lunch. After finishing their meal, they left the restaurant and resumed their trip. When leaving, the elderly woman unknowingly left her glasses on the table. And, she didn’t miss them until after they had been driving about twenty minutes. By then, to add to the aggravation, they had to travel quite a distance before they could find a place to turn around in order to return to the restaurant to retrieve her glasses. All the way back, the elderly husband became the classic grouchy old man. He fussed and complained and scolded his wife relentlessly during the entire return drive. The

more he chided her, the more agitated he became. He just wouldn’t let up one minute. To her relief, they finally arrived at the restaurant and as the woman got out of the car and hurried inside to retrieve her glasses, the old geezer yelled to her, “While you’re in there, you might as well get my hat.”
BRAVE OR STUPID? A husband, tired of his wife asking him how she looks, buys her a full length mirror. This does little to help as now she just stands in front of the mirror, looking at herself, asking him how she looks. One day, fresh out of the shower, she is yet again in front of the mirror, now complaining that her breasts are too small. Un characteristically, the husband comes up with a suggestion. ‘If you want your breasts to grow, then every day take a piece of toilet paper, and rub it between your breasts for a few seconds.’ Willing to try anything, the wife fetches a piece of toilet paper and stands in front of the mirror, rubbing it between her breasts. ‘How long will this take?’ she asks. ‘They’ll grow larger over a period of years,’ he replies. The wife stops. ‘Why do you think rubbing a piece of toilet paper between my breasts every day will make my breasts grow over the years?’ The husband shrugs. ‘Why not, it worked for your ass!’ He lived, and with a great deal of therapy he might even walk again.
TIME TO DRINK UP A guy walks into a bar and orders a shot of whisky. He gulps it down and peeks into his shirt pocket. He orders another shot of whisky, gulps it down and peeks into his short pocket. He orders a third shot and does the same thing. After the sixth shot, he asks the bartender for the bill, pays and starts to walk out. Curiosity gets the better of the bartender and he says to the guy, “Excuse me, but I noticed that every time you drank a shot, you kept looking into your pocket. I was

wondering what’s in your pocket.” The guy slurs, “Well, I have a picture of my wife in my pocket. I keep drinking until she starts to look good.”
MORE READERS SINGLE SHEET BYPASS JOKES Heard about the dating agency for chickens that went bust? Apparently they couldn’t make hens meet Why did the turkey cross the road? To prove it was no chicken. Two yoghurts walk into a bar. ‘We don’t serve your kind in here’ says the bartender’ A yoghurt asks ‘Why not, we’re cultured’. Dr Watson was in a bar, it was past closing time and he was a bit drunk. ‘Come on’ said the barman ‘Haven’t you got Holmes to go to?’ A saw and a hammer go into a bar and some other tools join them; the saw turns to the hammer and says ‘You know the drill, don’t you?’ The Italians are installing a clock in the Leaning Tower of Pisa; after all, what good is the inclination if you don’t have the time? Fortune tellers are very easy to buy clothes for; they’re all mediums. The boy cannibal was expelled from school for buttering up the teacher. If you dream that you’re writing The Lord of the Rings, are you just Tolkien in your sleep? Some cultures consider swallowing and expelling a fountain pen a write of passage. A man spent his life collecting memorabilia of Wonder Woman, Joan of Arc and Florence Nightingale; apparently he was a heroine addict. Mary had a little lamb, and then she had some dessert.
CHRISTMAS CRACKER REQUEST Your Santa jokes have been rolling in by email, post and down my chimney and will be shared in our seasonal, double month, next issue. Still room to stuff a few more in your stocking so don’t be shy, we won’t name you!
