A paper with impact — all over Europe It may look like a nice gimmick to bring some colour to the office, but the eye-catching new design of HP Office Paper Pink Ream is at the centre of an ambitious social marketing campaign that International Paper and its partner HP Papers US are bringing to Europe this month. The pink look isn’t just for fun. The colour has come to symbolise the worldwide fight against breast cancer. Every 19 seconds the disease is diagnosed somewhere across the globe. Every 60 seconds a woman dies because of breast cancer, resulting in over 140,000 mortalities per year. In Europe, it is the most common cause of death among women above the age of 35 years. In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, for every pack of HP Office Pink Ream paper sold, International Paper Europe will donate €0.10 (10 pence in the UK) to the Komen European Network (KEN). It is part of Susan G. Komen, the world’s largest non-governmental breast cancer organisation. For 35 years in more than 30 countries it has supported projects focused on education, research, treatment and therapies for fighting breast cancer. KEN operates in six European countries backing numerous initiatives with engagement, ideas, and financial support. In the US the cooperation between International Paper and Susan G. Komen dates back to 2007. Since then, the company has donated more than $700,000 to the organisation. The European campaign is based on this long-established partnership.
Awareness, education, innovation
International Paper has agreed to donate at least €100,000 to KEN, with in-house forecasts suggesting that the amount could rise to €150.000. All proceeds from the campaign will be used for KEN projects within Europe, focusing on awareness, education and innovation. Among them is a new, multinational initiative highlighting health and lifestyle. It addresses girls in six countries aged 12 to 18, an age group that has previously been ignored when it comes to the breast cancer awareness. In at least 100 schools per country the girls will learn about the importance of nutrition, physical activity and other aspects of healthy living. They will learn why alcohol, other drugs and smoking are so dangerous, especially in this stage of life. Another project is the Women Health Care Award, which will see €40,000 given to reward innovative ideas and initiatives addressing aspects of breast cancer. These range from monitoring and education to medical and therapeutic treatment as well as new ways to encourage awareness and prevention in corporate culture and public life. International Paper extends its sincere thanks to all distribution partners who are encouraging awareness and engagement for the Pink Ream campaign with communication activities in their countries. www.internationalpaper.com
Mail Boxes Etc. LOVING VINCENT movie tie-in Post, parcel and print specialist Mail Boxes Etc. is promoting the critically acclaimed art-house film Loving Vincent in its 160 UK stores this autumn. The collaboration follows MBE’s successful partnership with Warner Bros. last year to promote the launch of the STORKS movie. The free prize draw includes a twonight visit to Amsterdam for two people, complete with a private viewing of Vincent van Gogh’s works. Runners-up prizes include three Loving Vincent gift sets of Royal Talens artists’ oils, from the official provider of ink to the artists who painted the 65,000 prints that make up the film. There are also 25 of the original cinema art posters, 10 pairs of cinema tickets, and 500 limited edition art prints to be won. James Simmons, marketing manager at Mail Boxes Etc., explains the thinking behind this collaboration: “Our stores specialise in worldwide parcel delivery and we have particular expertise in collecting, packing and shipping of fragile, high-value fine art, antiques and collectables. We think Loving Vincent is an excellent fit with our
Auction Logistics brand, which was created specifically for customers who are looking for shipping services for their priceless, delicate and treasured items bought from auctions or sale rooms around the country. We’re proud to be promoting the film in our stores.” The launch activity will see MBE stores fully branded with Loving Vincent POS materials, and the digital campaign will include email marketing, social media channels and a dedicated microsite. “With its highly visual nature, this campaign beautifully showcases our print capabilities,” continues James Simmons. “We will produce all the printed collateral and in-store displays, plus beautiful A6 postcards for customers to take away, showing stills from the film. We’re also printing the 500 limited-edition art prints that will be given away in the prize draw.” The prize draw is free to enter at www. mbe.co.uk/lovingvincent and no purchase is necessary. Canon ColorWaves create stunning show Visitors to a University of Greenwich’s Show were treated to a fantastic array of imagery following its investment in two of Canon’s Océ ColorWave 700s. “The exhibition took longer to take down than it did to print,” stated Phil Hudson, Technical Team Leader, University of Greenwich. “The Océ ColorWaves are fast, efficient and cost effective. Two years ago, ink was one of our biggest expenses and we needed to look at making an investment to reduce consumable costs. Since purchasing the Océ ColorWave 700s, we have significantly cut ink costs, increased production capacity and improved flexibility. “Now students can be highly creative and produce work without worrying about the cost of going to an external print bureau. They also know they can complete their work quickly, easily and, at a quality that best showcases their work. Previously there would have been a bottleneck leading up to the show. This time there was still a queue but it was nowhere near as long. Jobs that used to take 10 to 15 minutes took one to two minutes. Another plus for me was the speed at which it produced long banners. This meant there was virtually no outsourcing for this show either.” Phil added: “There are six rollers which means we can run different substrates at the same time and work can just be sent to different queues. It is a rock-solid system.” Bala Abdullahi, Wide Format Account Manager and Technical Documentation Specialist at Canon UK, said: “The University of
Greenwich has taken the ColorWave technology and used it to take its student work to the next level. As a result, they have been able to produce a wide range of work from A3 to three metre banners on a variety of substrates.” An all-rounder colour printer, the Océ ColorWave 700 is designed for wider graphic arts applications and offers high quality, instant dry and waterproof prints on uncoated, thick and custom media. www.canon.co.uk
Retired printers and apprentices share experiences The Printing Charity’s sheltered home for people who have retired from the printing industry, Beaverbrook House in Bletchley, recently hosted a very successful joint event with the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF) for residents and apprentices. The interactive session presented by Howie Blanks, the BPIF’s South-East Training Coordinator and BPIF Training Co-ordinator, John Campey, centred on the transformation of the printing industry over 50 years. Residents shared their experiences of changes in the printing industry during their own working lives with apprentices in today’s print sector: Gareth McCorkell from Snap Products Ltd in Aldershot, James Burton from Optichrome in Woking, and Aaron Toombs and Jack Carter from BCQ Group Ltd in Buckingham. The apprentices were shown how an Adana letterpress worked by a resident and items were printed on a 3D printer during the event, which intrigued residents and apprentices alike. A quiz on printing techniques such as gravure, screen-printing, and flexography used on a range of printed samples rounded off the event. While some terminology has changed, for example, today’s digital pre-press incorporates what used to be a separate photographic department, residents and apprentices agreed printing still requires specialised skills. Some things have changed for the better, too, such as health and safety, and apprentices’ terms of employment. Neil Lovell, The Printing Charity’s Chief Executive, says: “Our residents have a wealth of knowledge and experience and it was great
to see them share this with the new apprentices, as well as gain insight into what’s happening in the sector today. The event was a terrific success and showed the power of different generations learning from each other.” Ursula Daly, BPIF Programme Director, says: “It was fantastic to see our apprentices interacting with the residents and bonding over a mutual love of print. They have come away with even more enthusiasm for the industry after hearing about its rich history from the residents.” Please see www.theprintingcharity.org.uk for more information and follow @printingcharity

Antalis ‘Best of British’ design competition With its inaugural global design competition having already received masses of entries from countries around the world, Antalis’ UK arm is reminding the UK’s talented design and print community to get their entries in ahead of the imminent closing date. Recently launched the Antalis Interior Design Awards have been designed to reward and recognise those who continue to push the boundaries of selfexpression and ingenuity when it comes to modern visual communications media. Simple to enter, participants are invited to submit their best designs using at least one product from the Antalis flagship Coala range in order to qualify for three categories; completed projects open to professionals including printers, interior designers, creatives and architects, a 3D blank canvas project open to professionals and students, and finally the public’s favourite award. All entrants will subsequently be judged by an expert panel of major international players from the world of design*, presided by renowned scenographer François Confino, in order to compete for the top prizes of €3,500 and €2,000, along with worldwide exposure via Wallpaper and Intramuros magazines. Already, just over a month in, Antalis has received numerous exceptional entries from around the world — including Germany, Denmark, Belgium, Bolivia, Bulgaria and the UK — but is keen to remind those who haven’t already submitted work to get involved. Katie Farr, head of marketing for Visual Communications at Antalis UK, comments: “Since launching the competition last month, we’ve received some truly exceptional entries from across the globe, including a number
from the UK. We’d like to encourage any printers or creatives who haven’t already got involved to enter, it’s a great opportunity for exposure on a world stage. “We really do have some of the most talented printers and designers here in the UK, so it is great to have an opportunity to give them the credit they deserve.” The winners of the 3D blank model element of the competition will benefit from media exposure in press partners, Wallpaper and Intramuros magazine and receive €3,500 and €2,000 for first and second prize respectively. Furthermore, they will have the opportunity to bring their ideas to life by re-designing parts of Antalis’ headquarters or one of the Group’s subsidiaries. Taking part in the Antalis Interior Design Award competition couldn’t be easier — entrants just need to submit their entries online at www. AntalisInteriorDesignAward.com before December 31st, 2017. All realisations will appear in the Gallery, offering increased visibility to participants until the contest closes.
The Printing Charity qualifications for WIS veterans The Printing Charity is to fund six Wounded, Injured or Sick (WIS) veterans to undertake a new, internationally recognised Level 3 City & Guilds qualification in bookbinding set up by Bound by Veterans (formerly known as The Wiltshire Barn Project). The 12-month project is the first of its kind in the UK for veterans discharged from service due to wounds, injuries or sickness. It is designed to help them make the transition from military to civilian life by becoming skilled in leather and gold tooling work, giving them the opportunity to start a new career in the printing industry. The Level 3 syllabus has been developed by Bound by Veterans, City & Guilds, The Queen’s Bindery Apprenticeship Scheme and industry representatives to complement the existing Level 1 and 2 bookbinding curriculum. Neil Lovell, The Printing Charity’s Chief Executive, says: “Funding this project is not only helping to keep core skills alive and providing a pathway into employment, but also aligns with our role as a founding funder of The Queen’s Bookbinding Apprenticeship Scheme and our broader support for education initiatives benefiting the industry.” Alison Strachan, Chairman of Bound by Veterans, says: “This is wonderful news for our WIS veterans, who derive so much confidence and self-esteem from learning new skills. We are hugely grateful to The Printing Charity for sponsoring this exciting and important innovation that will dramatically extend the scope of support offered to veterans, especially by improving their employability.”

Konica Minolta new AccurioLabel 190 press Konica Minolta exceeded its own business targets and cemented its growing reputation within industrial print markets after some important announcements at Labelexpo, including the launch of a new label press. Konica Minolta unveiled its AccurioLabel 190 full-digital toner press for Europe, which has been developed and manufactured in cooperation with Danish company Grafisk Maskinfabrik (GM). And not even a week after Labelexpo, the production of GM winders is approaching its capacity and Konica Minolta is actively looking into scaling up. Konica Minolta’s AccurioLabel 190 will replace the bizhub PRESS C71cf, a system that has been sold already to over 100 companies across the globe since being launched only two years ago. Building on this success, GM is supplying its DC330 mini converting unit for the AccurioLabel 190 press, which can work in-line with the machine or as a standalone unit. The Konica Minolta AccurioLabel 190 system benefits from stable colour consistency and 1200x1200 dpi offset-style quality. No pre-coating is required. The new machine for Europe comes with a web guiding system as a standard. Converters benefit from its ease of operation, production flexibility, fast turnaround and variable data printing capabilities, as well as world-class support and service Another first on the stand at Labelexpo was MGI’s JETvarnish 3DWeb Color+ system for label and flexible packaging, as well as shrink film. The new digital inkjet embellishment press further reinforces the strategic alliance between MGI Digital Technology and Konica Minolta. The new system produces in-line flat and 3D spot UV coating, 3D embossed varnish textures, flat and embossed foil effects. The full solution also includes a flexo priming station for uncoated material surface management and a semi-rotary die-cutting system at the end of the production for an all-in-one production.
Edoardo Cotichini, Team Manager Industrial Printing, Konica Minolta Business Solutions Europe, said: “The reaction from visitors was fantastic and demonstrated there is a strong need in the market for our offering. The Konica Minolta AccurioLabel 190 has been introduced after further large-scale screening of the market. We have listened carefully to customer feedback, which has really helped shape our ideas and thinking.” Mr. Cotichini added: “Labelexpo was an important platform for Konica Minolta to showcase its world-class technology and services. The high level of interest demonstrated that the AccurioLabel 190 press will sell extremely well. The in-line finishing option has been well received, as was the flexibility of running off-line too. And, not even a week after Labelexpo, the production of GM winders is approaching its capacity and we are actively looking into scaling up.” Konica Minolta label press systems fill the gap between entry level and high-end digital printing presses. Shipping for the new AccurioLabel 190 press is due to begin in December. www.konicaminolta.eu.
Mimaki’s new LA Series heat-assisted laminators Mimaki has announced the new LA Series of wide format, heat-assisted laminators and laminating film to complement the new Mimaki UCJV Series LED UV printer/cutters. “Mimaki continues to bring innovative solutions to market that make it faster, easier and more cost-effective for sign and display graphics and other businesses to produce outstanding full-colour sign and display graphics,” said Ronald Van den Broek of Mimaki Europe. “This laminating solution is another example of that innovation, and when paired with Mimaki’s new UCJV series of printand-cut solutions, provides a turnkey offering that will help companies drive more profit to their bottom lines.”
Key features
Heat-assist provides superior finishing: LA Series laminators are heat-assisted devices with a maximum temperature of 60˚C. This heat assistance improves over-laminate film adhesion, particularly to surfaces printed with UV-curable inks, and reduces the potential for the silvering effect created by pressure sensitive over-laminates. Due to instant curing, UV inks
tend to have a slightly uneven surface which can trap air bubbles during the laminating process, causing silvery specs that can take away from the appearance of the product. Fast throughput speeds: Laminating speeds of up to 7.5m per minute means that the finishing can keep up with production and reduce bottlenecks. Simple and reliable operation: The easyto-use laminator includes all functions on one operation panel, with easy access to the pressure handle and foot pedal. Additionally, a take-up reel makes it simple for one person to control the entire process. Mimaki Vision Laminate: Designed specifically for use with UV-curable inks and LA Series laminators, Mimaki Vision Laminate 310 (Gloss) film offers fine finishing with a glossy feel while maintaining the colour brightness of the print. This high quality, heat assisted over-laminate is also a cost-effective alternative to cold laminating films. LA Series laminators with Mimaki Vision Laminate film will be the ideal companions to a UCJV Series LED UV printer/cutter,” explains John de la Roche of Mimaki’s UK & Ireland
distributor, Hybrid Services. “UCJV prints are instantly dry meaning they can immediately be finished on a LA Series laminator. This complete, harmonised solution ensures reliable performance and quality output for those times when a protective over-laminate is required.” LA Series laminators and films are expected to be available towards the end of 2017. Two models will be available: the 158cm LA-160W model and the 170cm LA-170W model. Mimaki Vision Laminate 310 will also be available in two sizes: 310-137 (137cm) and 310-152 (152cm). www.hybridservices.co.uk

Vivid Deep Pile feeder for Matrix and ‘5th colour’ Vivid Laminating Technologies introduced its new Omni-Flow modular deep pile feeder for the award-winning Matrix Systems at The Print Show last month. Vivid’s sales director Richard Marlow said, “The new Omni-Flow will laminate and foil up to 1000 SRA3 sheets unattended, saving both time and money. It’s a truly revolutionary product and can be set-up in seconds, at least five times quicker than traditional feeders.” The Omni-Flow is fully modular and easily retrofits to current Matrix Systems. Vivid has designed the feeder to run in-line with the Matrix, utilising custom Swiss Feed head technology exclusively for the Omni-Flow. The
new system will also feed long sheet stock of 1050mm plus in length. “We have also introduced our new Printable White Foil”, continued Marlow. “This is a brilliant solution for digital printers who want to print white, but don’t have the engine to print a 5th colour.” Vivid’s new Aqua Aura Printable White Foil adheres to coloured papers by first printing black toner to the sheet and then applying the foil using the Matrix. Colour images and text can then be overprinted directly onto the white foil, meaning that the coloured print will show on black and other dark substrates. www.vivid-online.com

Morgana release new larger format PUR binder Morgana Systems has announced the release of the DigiBook 300XLPro PUR binder — an updated version of its existing DigiBook 300. The machine incorporates several new features to address some specific applications posed by the market. Commenting on the new unit, Ray Hillhouse, vice-president offline business at Morgana, said: “The first important change to the new model is we have made it a single-phase machine. The previous version required a three-phase power supply, which limited its potential installation to larger print shops and factories that had access to three-phase power. The 300XLPro is now a 32-amp single-phase machine, and this will allow its installation in most commercial premises and print businesses. “Another key change, and perhaps the most significant, is the book format. Several machines of the previous specification were sold with special extended cover kits to allow for the production of books larger than A4 size. We also had a number of requests for landscape A3 or 11”x17” finished size books.” The new DigiBook 300XLPro now has an even larger cover kit fitted as standard, and can produce books with a spine length of up to 450mm. This provides the ability to produce landscape SRA3 format books, with spine thickness of up to 50mm, thus opening up another whole range of applications. Two additional options are now available for the 300XLPro: one is the gauze station, which will allow for the production of book blocks ready for case binding. The other option, that may be useful for customers producing longer runs, is the high capacity paper
chip extractor. This unit has a 78-litre capacity for paper dust, allowing long uninterrupted runs of even the thickest books. In addition to these changes, the machine is still equipped with the same hermetically sealed PUR glue application system. This system is the most efficient nozzle system on the market, with fast start-up and shutdown and minimal wastage. It has automatic cleaning and sealing of the head at the end of the production run. The machine is available for order now, with a lead-time of approximately four to six weeks. www.morgana.co.uk
Konica Minolta move into industrial printing Konica Minolta has enhanced its new Industrial Printing product portfolio with the launch of the MGI JETvarnish 3D Evolution. The JETvarnish 3D Evolution, developed and manufactured by Konica Minolta’s strategic partner MGI, is available in three sizes from B2 to B1. It delivers high volume productivity with up to 4,065 B2 size sheets per hour, offers remarkable registration and the ability to create brilliant and highly profitable 2D and 3D effects with up to 200 micron in a single pass. It applies spot UV coating as a top layer to make prints more vivid, tactile and exclusive. The varnish adds a creative touch to a wide range of applications, including luxury packaging, book covers, business cards or greeting cards, brochures, flyers, posters, magazines, photo books, and many more. This makes the JV3D Evolution an interesting add-on product for more or less any print provider operating toner, offset or inkjet print systems. With the JETvarnish 3D Evolution it is easy to spot coat digital and offset prints, highlight defined areas, or add tactile 3D effects – all of which create attractive print products that are more vivid and tactile. A LITTLE EVOLUTION NOT REVOLUTION Previously Martin Christie was at an Adobe workshop now he charts recent software developments
[L]
ast month I reported from Adobe’s new headquarters in London on developments concerning Stock library images and their integration with the software company’s various products. One of the things that came up was the long — in digital terms — history of Photoshop. I happened to mention that I’d been working in the programme since Photoshop 5. “Oh CS5?” a helpful advisor asked. “No just 5!” A look of astonishment followed as if I was recalling a history from the dark ages. Well, actually from the last century to be fair, as Photoshop began its evolution in the last decade of the 1900s, a time barely conceivable to modern millennials. I haven’t tracked its progress for all of that time, merely a little over half of it. But it gives me a good perspective on where we have arrived today with digital image editing, and how we got here. It’s hard to imagine now, given the saturation of electronic images, but back then digital cameras were still pretty much a novelty, and even the management of the world largest photographic company, Kodak, were convinced they would never catch on. Fortunately for Adobe Systems, somebody in charge was smart enough to realise that they just might, and purchased the rights to a recently developed piece of software that could turn all those digits into something real, and manageable. Previously, with film, photographers and printers only met in the darkroom, and manipulation of images was down to a whole industry of specialist reproduction men, and airbrushers. The digital revolution changed all that and put the process in the reach of the average user. Adobe’s next smart move was to make a limited edition version available on a disc to be given away as a standalone to purchasers of decent cameras and scanners. This introductory offer ensured that Photoshop became the software of choice to a lot of regular users, and soon its very name became synonymous with any digital editing progamme.
This is how I first encountered PS, and having evolved with it to the present day, can appreciate how far it has come from those early versions. Although it probably looked complicated at the time, the dashboard and the tools were still quite primitive compared to the modern day - not surprising considering the time that has elapsed, and the direct feedback from customers that makes every user a potential test pilot for beta trials. Three decades is a massive time span in technical innovation today, considering it took less than seven between man’s first hop into the air at Kittyhawk and his landing on the moon! One of the major problems for developers was keeping pace with related innovation which was equally enjoying a major learning curve. Cameras not only became universal devices but became increasingly powerful, as did processing power and memory storage, and operating systems had to adapt to rapidly changing demands, and anticipate issues which might arise, including updating or even completely re-writing its working algorithms. In such an environment, developments have to take place in the context of all those other factors. For Adobe, the very long term success of
Photoshop meant that it had to be careful to retain all those original users, as well as providing the additional tools and functions demanded by current trends. Hence the basic workspace has stayed very familiar even if all the buttons and panels have expanded so that many remain hidden until called into use. Although referring to PS, similar transformations have taken place with its stable mates, InDesign and Illustrator etc, as well as the introduction of specific photography programme Lightroom. The biggest step forward, however was the move to subscription in a cloud based arrangement, rather than a one-off purchase. This gave Adobe the opportunity to tighten up on licensing fraud, but from the users point of view meant that keeping up to date was assured, and that really has proved to be the selling point against a certain amount of initial reluctance when the scheme was introduced. As with absolutely any device, the more complicated it gets, the more things can go wrong, and software is no exception. In fact, by its very nature, it may be subject to failure or dysfunction due to previously unanticipated factors. There may even be conflicts between early versions of

the same programme which is why an upgrade is important, not just to have the latest toy, but to be sure it is actually working correctly. There are so many versions of Photoshop still kicking around and still working after all these years, many users won’t even be aware which version they are using, and most importantly, if there are any particular issues with it. Some might not even be using the Adobe product at all but an alternative which they call by the same name for convenience. And this is where there can be difficulties with customers and trying to advise them on their work, how to create it and how to save it for print, let alone try and appreciate their level of competence. If their old car starts coughing and banging they might take it to a garage or scrap it, but they may limp along with a redundant piece of software long after it has ceased to perform efficiently without ever realising. Adobe can’t exactly enforce a scrappage deal on all the dodgy versions of PS still surviving but at least they can keep the latest up to date. The latest, and significant update has come this very month, and for a complete breakdown you’ll need to go onto the Adobe website where there’s comprehensive coverage of all the detail upgrades across the whole package, not to mention help forums and social networks. You will also be getting tips in the mail. If you’ve got the Creative Cloud package installed, and clicked on all the updates in the Apps column, you should have them, or just be in the middle of downloading them. Bear with the process as it’s worth the wait, and worth checking your plan is completely current spec, especially as you are paying for it. There is an Advanced option which controls how the updates act, removing older versions for example, so worth checking to see exactly what you are getting. What’s most significant depends on which programme you mostly use, but be sure to investigate all the possibilities as there may be new functions that aren’t immediately obvious. Adobe doesn’t tend to bother you with annoying pop ups to tell you how wonderful it is and whether you have tried its latest gadget. Much of the innovation is intended to improve performance and potential on tablets and other mobile devices, recognising that so much creative design is now done on the move. But there is plenty of improvement for the desktop where the real work takes place!
vivid-online.com
Rather than clutter the already busy Photoshop workspace many new functions have been introduced in new applications. There is a new 3D design package, Dimension CC, for example, as well as several others which open independently but which can work across the whole platform. Some of the innovation is hidden, sorting known issues, and fine tuning performance to cope with ever larger and more complex files, so they open quicker and edit and save faster. Even as processing speeds have increased, so have the sizes of images and the possibilities of manipulating them. Some of the improvements may seem minor, in further refining brush and pen tools, and the application of layer masks, but they are part of the continuing process of intelligent editing both of pixel and vector based files, which in Photoshop includes advanced manipulation of text that previously had to be rasterized. Content aware abilities have been around since the Creative Suite was introduced, but are much improved and continually being fine honed. They make possible the easy addition of bleed in the print environment for example, removal of unwanted marks, and the smooth blending of colours and texture which would never have been possible with some of the early versions of PS. Which is why if you are trying to advise a customer who has one, you might as well be talking in a different language.

One of the important changes for digital photography is that Lightroom has now been divided into two, with Lightroom Classic replacing the previous desktop versions, and a more streamlined Lightroom CC being specifically pruned for mobile devices. This should sort performance issues in loading and cataloguing that were seriously bogging down the last incarnation of this very useful image programme. Lightroom images can also be stored in the cloud and viewed directly in Photoshop, much like Stock images, making them easier to pull across into PS. In Adobe Bridge they have finally brought back the much loved (by me at least) Output module, which previously disappeared and had to be downloaded and installed separately. This enables the easy creation of custom PDF packages for print or web galleries now, with a new publishing host Portfolio. This is another acknowledgement of customer demand, much like the second coming of photographer’s favourite Contact Sheet II. It’s all so new I haven’t had time to take it all in before the deadline on this month’s issue but I’d be interested in any feedback, positive or otherwise, before the next one at the end of November when I’ll be highlighting some of the useful additions to the print shop workflow. www.adobe.com/uk/creativecloud.htm www.adobe.com/uk/creativecloud/features.html http://blogs.adobe.com/creativecloud/tag/product-updates/

With the growing popularity of apprenticeships it is essential that you have a policy in place, as the organisation placing somebody with you is obliged to check the suitability of your workplace. Our aim is to produce a template that is easily adapted to your own individual circumstances and to that end we have invested many weeks research and now have a template to forward to members.

IFS to Launch Worldwide Taurus 520 SF 4x4
IFS has expanded its lamination portfolio with the addition of the next-generation Taurus 530 SF 4X4 double-sided laminating system. Presented for the first time globally at IPEX 2017, NEC, Birmingham, it is ideally suited to higher volume double-sided lamination. Bryan Godwyn, IFS Managing Director comments: “The Taurus 530 SF 4X4 double sided laminating system is a great addition to our hugely popular Foliant range. It will open new doors for our customers to explore higher volumes of double sided lamination. It will improve their turn around times on all double-sided laminating jobs and enable jobs to be completed much faster with less labour involved.” Built on the success of the Foliant Mercury 530SF 4 x 4 it features two laminating units for 100% equal quality on both sides at all speeds. This is something that is not always possible using a traditional double-sided laminator with
a single pair of heated laminating rollers. Also incorporated is a new system for heating up in less than ten minutes allowing for a fast make ready, enabling a maximum speed of 35 m/min 2,900 B2 sheets p/h. Adds Godwyn: “The new Foliant Taurus 530SF 4x4 looks like it is the world’s most sophisticated industrial double side laminating machine on the market. The system is also marked with the industry respected ‘GS’ tested safety label.” www.ifsl.uk.com
Morgana new PUR binder
Morgana will be taking its full range of products to the show, including the recently released DigiBook 300XLPro. This latest addition to the DigiBook range has been made a single-phase machine, with the ability to handle formats up to SRA3 landscape. Commenting on this latest PUR binder, Ray Hillhouse, vice-president offline business at Morgana, said: “The new DigiBook 300XLPro has an even larger cover kit fitted as standard, and can produce books with a spine length of up to 450mm. This provides the ability to produce landscape SRA3 format books, with spine thickness of up to 50mm, thus opening up another whole range of applications for this popular machine.” Also new to the line-up is the Morgana Laminator Pro 450, with a unique “heavy duty” high pile feeder for true load and go operation. The product incorporates an integrated compressor and pneumatic system for high quality print lamination, and can handle sheets up to a full 450mm x 700mm, making it the ideal solution for the customer that needs to laminate printed sheets from either digital or offset applications. The Morgana exhibit will include the latest

high-capacity AutoCreaser and DigiFold Pro 385 folder/creasers. The AutoCreaser Pro 385 will feature a new style of creasing mechanism, allowing for fast changing of the blades without tools. Users can lift out a creasing blade set and change to another blade thickness in less than a minute. The company will include the latest Bindomatic models, the Accel Cube and Ulta machines, providing the fastest automated binding in the industry. The successor to the popular Bindomatic 7000, the Cube System is the ideal binding solution for office/ corporate “walk-up” print stations, as well as volume demanding CRD or commercial print environments. It delivers professionallybound documents without the need of trained operators. With a wide range of binding covers, including hard-back, this “drop and go” binding is a real game changer for the automated high-speed production of documents. For bookletmaking, the company will show the BM350/500 product with the latest VF vacuum feeder. Other exhibits will include the AeroCut card cutter/creaser/slitter machines, and the popular Valiani flatbed cutter. www.morgana.co.uk

industry consultant Francois Martin and Deborah Corn, architect of the world’s largest online community of print stakeholders, who together form the three keynote speakers on the first three days of the event. Content Curator at IPEX 2017, James Matthews-Paul, comments; “Kevin is one of the youngest CEO’s in the industry, and has a contagious passion for print and its future. His fresh outlook and experience in coding and programming, combined with his entrepreneurial background, gives him a unique perspective, which he is excited to share with our audience.” Kevin Goeminne will deliver an inspiring account of the continued success CHILI publish is experiencing, providing insights into market crossover opportunities. CHILI publish is a scale-up business with backing from prestigious investment firm Volta Ventures, providing online document editing and rendering solutions for digital marketing services worldwide. In his keynote, he will share the moments behind the eight extraordinary years of growth that made CHILI publish a fast-growing brand within the marketing communications business. During his keynote, Goeminne will aim to enthuse the audience for this cross-market helicopter approach; “CHILI publish evolved from start-up to scale-up because we ventured beyond pure print in order to create an all-encompassing niche solution. Partnerships and integrations with Digital Asset Management, Product Information Management and Management Information System and in-house developing, helped us ensure that our online document editing solutions are un-neglectable when thinking web-to-print. Digital has evolved, so has print — I want to highlight the best of both worlds during my keynote and show what a combination of both can unlock for businesses worldwide.” Event Director, Rob Fisher adds; “As the event draws closer, we are delighted to share our final keynote speaker Kevin Goeminne, as the perfect final addition to our stellar line-up of keynote addresses. We can’t wait to hear the valuable insights he will bring to the ‘Print In Action’ Conference and share with the print community in attendance at IPEX 2017.”
Friedheim Forecast
Following on from a year packed full of successful exhibitions and open houses, Friedheim International will be exhibiting with one of the largest stands at the show, boasting some of the most advanced print finishing equipment on offer today. At IPEX 2014 they launched the MBO M80 range of versatile modular folders, at IPEX 2017 Friedheim will have the UK launch of the MBO K80 high speed combination folder, along with the UK launch of the Bograma Servo 550 BASIC short run die-cutter. Joining these two machines will be the KAMA ProFold 74 running

over 5000 capacity folders and hour, an Herzog + Heymann creasing line running direct mail work, Komfi’s crown jewel the Sagitta 76 laminator along with the best selling Komfi Amiga 52 with OTF ready to run custom foiling jobs at the show. The line up wraps up with a 78 and a 115 guillotine from Schneider and BaumannWohlenberg respectively and a Zechini Roby Junior 2 compact, semi-automatic case maker. Although Friedheim has predominantly postpress and converting machines at this year’s show, the full range of equipment and divisions will be represented by all their national sales managers along with their sales specialists. They will be supported by the manufacturers with demonstrations and sales presentations running throughout the four day show. Mark Bristow, Managing Director says “We decided to go with a much larger stand this year due to the current demand for our equipment. With shorter runs, the requirement for automation, the consolidation of various businesses and the need to be more economical with their work flow, our customers look to us to give them the best advice and best equipment to meet these challenges.” Friedheim has always enjoyed a rich relationship with IPEX so it was decided to go big this year. The stand is 195m2 and will be a complete production work space, with actual real-world jobs running throughout each day. Format and job changes live on the stand, along with best work practices from Friedheim’s team of experienced technicians and demonstrators. Stuart Bamford, National Sales Manager — Post-Press says “IPEX is the perfect venue to launch the MBO K80 folder for the UK market, we did it last time with the M80 and it turned out really well for us. We hope to recapture some of the magic this year too. The K80 is perfectly poised for the UK market, at its price point, there isn’t a faster, more quality folder with this level of automation and advanced control, and the customers we took to the Baumann open house who saw it in June, were truly impressed.” www.friedheim.co.uk

BUSINESS
Opening up the Large Format Market Creative designs come in all shapes and sizes, putting pressure on the graphic communications industry to provide high quality results for clients with maximum visual impact. Andrew Hall, marketing manager for OKI Systems UK, opens opportunities…
[E]
very provider is looking for new ways to differentiate their business. How do they stand out from the crowd in an increasingly crowded marketplace? To meet these requirements, print providers need reliable large format graphic arts printers that deliver brilliant colour, photo quality detail and lasting, high durability results for both indoor and outdoor applications. For many of these businesses finding the right technology solution is an increasingly urgent concern. As the markets in which they operate become more and more competitive, these businesses are seeking fresh opportunities and new revenue streams, requiring access to a wider range of versatile media in order to provide the greatest variety of high-quality applications.
Scoping the Challenge
To deliver business advantage against their peers, they need to find ways to make shorter run lengths, faster turnarounds and high output quality more profitable. That’s one part of the equation but at the same time, hard-pressed graphic communications businesses are also facing an ever-growing range of customer driven demands. The pressure to deliver high impact results is increasing all the time. Today’s businesses demand vibrant colour and sharp photo quality detail from graphic arts printing. Added to this, maintaining productivity is essential in busy printing environments, making equipment downtime costly, compromising service levels and risking reputation.
Inside and Out
Moreover, there are a range of challenges that impact both indoor and outdoor applications. Sunlight, pollution and other weather conditions cause outdoor signs, banners and
vehicle wraps to fade and degrade. To ensure customer satisfaction and repeat business, outdoor media needs to be robust enough to withstand sunlight, changing weather conditions, pollution and other external factors. This calls for stronger, and often potent inks and, in the past, meant different machines for printing indoor and outdoor applications. This put further restrictions on large format businesses. After all, providing indoor applications is a growing market where highquality prints will be viewed close up. Therefore, high resolution and accurate print registration are essential. Additionally, in a confined indoor environment certified low odour inks are critical. But businesses have historically been unable to take advantage of high-quality indoor and outdoor printing in the one machine. Unfortunately, graphic arts and printing businesses were also facing problems with colour quality. Colours were typically not strong enough to be lit from the back, which ruled out many indoor applications such as exhibition posters and displays. Nor were they dense enough for applications like wallpapers. In fact, the colour density tended to deteriorate when printing high-speed or towards the end of a mass production campaign. Critically too, for exhibition and other work such as building wraps, photorealistic prints were not possible and as the industry had primarily focused on outdoor work in the past, neither were fine details and small lettering. Yet especially when used indoors, high-quality prints are viewed close up and so high resolution and accurate print registration are crucial. So in light of the raft of challenges impacting the large format sector today, how can print services providers operating in graphic arts businesses effectively address these challenges and deliver the high-quality output that is increasingly critical in this space?
Finding an Answer
Following recent developments in the large format printer market, for a relatively affordable outlay print shops and small and medium-sized businesses specialising in this type of printing can significantly widen their portfolio and open up new revenue streams, leading to fast return on their investment. The latest innovations mean that it is now possible to print indoor and outdoor orders on the same machine using low-colour, eco-solvent SX inks. These provide the right print quality and UV stability for outdoor use but are also low odour certified for use in an indoor environment. Colour quality is no longer an issue either — at least not with the most innovative of these devices. Combining high viscosity inks with advanced print heads, the latest printers now maintain accurate density, enabling vibrant colour and sharp photo quality detail. Industrial high-frequency greyscale print heads increase the quality and reliability of the printer and print results. High ink pigmentation creates saturated prints for backlit applications opening up the potential of printing light frames for technical textile and backlit materials over floor graphics and point of sale. Innovative Dynamic Drop Printing (DDP) technology accentuates fine details and delivers smooth gradients and rich, glossy colours, even at high print speeds. New applications for these ground-breaking new print devices include light frames for technical textile and backlit materials over floor graphics, point of sale (PoS) and point of presentation (PoP), wallpaper, posters, window graphics with clear or transparent film, banners and signs for hotels, shops, malls and theatres, art reproductions, department store displays, exhibition displays and many more applications. Durability of output means it will be possible to explore the markets for outdoor media from customised vehicle and building wraps to banners, signs and awnings. Plus, there’s the flexibility of a wide variety of substrates including wallpaper, fleece, canvas and other textiles, whiteback, blueback, poster paper, photo paper, clear or transparent film, backlit PVC, PET, film light box paper and textiles and hard PVC.
Positive Prospects
All business sectors have their ups and downs. That’s as true of the large format printing industry as any other. Not so long ago it was in danger of turning into the dinosaur of the commercial print world. Today, thanks to the latest technological advances, that’s all changed. Armed with the latest technology innovations, large format printing businesses can face the future positively, confident in their ability to meet the demands of an increasingly competitive market and capitalise on a growing array of profitable opportunities.

Print and Paper packs a punch in a digital world The results of an international survey by Two Sides provides unique insight into how print and paper is viewed, preferred and trusted by consumers around the globe. Earlier this year, a survey of over 10,700 consumers was commissioned by Two Sides and carried out by leading research company Toluna. Nationally representative surveys were undertaken in ten countries: Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States. The results reveal a strong preference for print when it comes to recreational reading e.g. books, magazines, news etc. 72% of global respondents prefer printed books, compared to only 9% preferring e-books. Significant country differences were also identified: in Germany, 75% of consumers prefer a printed newspaper, but in Spain, only 42%. Not only is there a global preference for print, there is also greater trust in print. 76% of all respondents believe “fake news” is a worrying trend and only 24% trust the news stories they read on social media. In addition, 63% of all respondents believe reading news in a printed newspaper provides a deep understanding of the story. The survey also revealed consumers have a negative perception of online advertising. 68% of global respondents say they don’t pay attention to online ads and 62% find them annoying and usually not relevant. 57% of global respondents do their best to block or avoid online ads. Despite the shift towards receiving digital communications, 89% of consumers believe they should have the right to choose how they receive communications (printed or electronically) from financial organisations and service providers, with a further 77% agreeing they should not be charged more for choosing paper bills and statements. The common claims assisting this drive to digital, such as “Go Green — Go Paperless” and “Save Trees”, are creating consumer suspicion as 62% of global respondents believe the switch to digital is because the sender wants to save money, not because it is “better for the environment”. Concerns about security and privacy were also evident. 71% are concerned their personal information held electronically is at risk of being hacked, stolen, lost or damaged and 73% keep paper copies of important documents at home for safety and security. Overall, findings conclude that consumers trust, enjoy and gain a deeper understanding of information read in print, with signs of digital fatigue and concern for electronic information security and privacy evident.

Life’s a Beach with Xeretec at The Print Show 2017
While the summer holiday season may be over, Xeretec’s beach-themed stand was the place to visit at this year’s Print Show. In an exciting first for the company, Xeretec’s stand included large format devices from HP following Xeretec’s recent acquisition of the Landscape Group. Additionally, in conjunction with partners Xerox, EFI, Infigo Software and XMPie, Xeretec demonstrated how it can help businesses successfully get to their next business destination. Xeretec showed how its experienced print consultants, combined with market-leading solutions and services from its partners, meet the changing requirements for print, ranging from variable data printing to web to print. The leading-edge solutions shown on Xeretec’s stand included the recently-launched Xerox Versant 180, the Xerox Versant 3100 and the HP DesignJet Z5600PS. In addition, Xeretec demonstrated how its solutions can simplify personalised digital print by showcasing the Web-2-Print from Infigo Software to capture information and then print effortlessly on the Xerox Versant. Dave Lanning, Sales Director, Landscape Printing Systems Limited, stated: “HP Platinum Partners Landscape Printing Systems is proud to be exhibiting this year at The Print Show as part of the Xeretec Group. Landscape is one
of the UK’s foremost and dedicated HP large format resellers, one of only four UK PageWide XL Partners. Our graphics specialists will be demonstrating affordable, versatile and innovative express printing solutions for QPP print service providers, enabling growth by saving time and resources by simplifying print workflows.” From Infigo Software, visitors to the Xeretec stand also saw two new game-changing integrations. The first is Enfocus PitStop which delivers a new level of automated artwork management that revolutionises processes involved in producing print ready files within one workflow, reducing hours of manual work. The second is with Tharstern, which delivers an industry first in real-time, on-demand estimating, which will change the way printers do business. Douglas Gibson, Managing Director at Infigo Software, said: “In order to differentiate our proposition, we’ve focused on developing value-added partnerships, integrations and product enhancements with the customer experience at the heart. We can be flexible and dynamic because we own and write the code to our software and so can flex to meet individual client needs – which we believe is essential for today’s dynamic customers. We’re excited to be working with Xeretec to show how together our solutions make success easier for clients.” EFI demonstrated its new user interface to the Fiery®, called Fiery Command WorkStation (CWS) 6, which was launched globally in August. Xeretec also set up a workflow using Fiery JobFlow™, combining with a Fiery JobMaster™. “EFI and Xeretec have shared a strong and fruitful partnership for over a decade. This continued success stems from a common passion of supporting businesses to thrive and further push the boundaries in the digital printing world. We are happy to stand side by side with Xeretec this year at the Print Show”, stated Terry Garvey, Partner Alliance Director at EFI. www.xeretec.co.uk

SOMETHING TO SHARE…? Playing your age
A lady is having a bad day at the roulette tables in Vegas. She’s down to her last $50. Exasperated, she exclaims to the whole table, “What rotten luck I’ve had today! What in the world should I do now?” A man standing next to her suggests, “I don’t know, why don’t you play your age?” He walks away, but moments later; his attention is grabbed by a great commotion at the roulette table. Maybe she won! He rushes back to the table and pushes his way through the crowd. The lady is lying limp on the floor, with the table operator kneeling over her. The man is stunned. He asks, “What happened? Is she all right?” The operator replies, “I don’t know. She put all her money on 36, and when 47 came up she just fainted!”
Cool sounds
“What do you get if you cross a fridge and a stereo?” “I don’t know, what?” “Cool music!”
By the numbers
A man rushed into a doctor’s office, jumped on the doctor’s back, and started screaming, “One! Two! Three! Four!” “Wait a minute!” yelled the doctor, trying to get free. “What do you think you’re doing?” The man said, “Well doctor, they did say I could count on you!”
Soup of the day
One day in the army I was assigned KP duty. I reported to the Mess Hall and was told by the sergeant in charge that he wanted me to make 100 gallons of soup for tonight’s dinner. I told him I didn’t know how to make soup. He quickly handed me a book and told me to follow the directions carefully. Soon after I had a large kettle of soup simmering. The sergeant came up and tasted the soup. He took a second spoonful and stood there staring at me. I thought I had really messed up the soup and was waiting for a reprimand. Instead the sergeant said, “This tastes really good... are you sure you followed the recipe?”
Mighty atom
A sixth form science teacher began her discussion of atoms by saying, “Never trust an atom... they make up everything!”
Coming, ready or not
If someone has a mid-life crisis while playing hide and seek... Do they automatically lose because they can’t find themselves?
D-day
After his divorce, Mr Lewis came to an important realisation... He realised that poker isn’t the only game that starts with holding hands and ends with an astounding financial loss.
The Wedding Ring
Daughter: My fiancé said I could have whatever I wanted inscribed on his wedding ring. What should I put? Mother: Put what I put on your father’s wedding ring. Daughter: What does it say? I’ve never seen daddy with it off. Mother: Yes. It’s worked very well over the years. It says, “Put it back on!”
Marriage advice
The boss had listened in sympathetic silence as Mario went through the reasons why he needed, and felt he deserved, a raise. Then, with a compassionate smile, the CEO patted the younger man on the shoulder. “Yes, Mario,” he said kindly, “I know you can’t get married on the salary I’m paying you… and some day you’ll thank me for it.”
Morning after
“If you’ll make the toast and pour the juice, sweetheart,” said Tracy, the newlywed bride, “breakfast will be ready.” “Good, what are we having for breakfast?” asked Dan, the new husband. “Toast and juice,” Tracy replied.
World’s biggest conker
John: Do you know how big the world’s biggest nose was? David: Eleven inches John: That’s not very long. David: If it were any longer, it would be a foot.
AWOL
One morning a call came in to the school office. “Hello, please mark William absent today. He’s sick,” said the caller. “Okay,” said the receptionist. “May I ask who is speaking?” “My uncle,” said William.
Gone fishin’
“Poor old fool,” thought the gentleman as he watched an old man trying to fish in a puddle of water outside of the bar. He decided to invite the old man inside for a drink. As they sipped their whiskeys, the gentleman thought he’d humour the old man and asked, “So how many have you caught so far?” The old man replied, “You’re the eighth today.”
Time to waste
There were three men on a hill with their watches. The first man threw his watch down the hill and it broke. The second man threw his watch down the hill and it broke. The third man threw his watch down the hill, walked all the way to the bottom, and caught it. The other two men were puzzled and asked the third man how he did it. The third man said, “Easy. My watch is five minutes slow.”
Slow comms
Two guys were riding in a car, arguing about how to say the name of the city that they were in. One said “Louie-ville” and the other “Louise-ville.” They went on arguing and arguing, until they came upon a fast-food restaurant. The one guy goes inside and says to the waitress, “Please tell me the name of the place where I am right now, really, really, really slowly.” The waitress goes, “Bur-gerKing.”
Energy saver
Teacher: “Define energy.” Johnny: “I don’t remember the complete definition but I remember the last few words.” Teacher: “Ok, say the last few words then.” Johnny: “... and this is called energy.”
Namesake
Husband: “I want to tattoo your name on me. What do you think, shall I do it on my arm or neck?” Wife: “How about on your will?”
SOS
At a boat rental pond, the manager went to the lake’s edge and yelled through his megaphone, “Number 99, come in, please. Your time is up.” Several minutes passed, but the boat didn’t return. “Boat number 99,” he again hollered, “return to the dock immediately or I’ll have to charge you overtime.” “Something is wrong here, boss,” his assistant, said. “We only have 75 boats. There is no number 99.” The manager thought for a moment and then raised his megaphone. “Boat number 66!” he yelled. “Are you having trouble out there?”
Early morning make-up call
A wife started doing her make up as soon as she woke up. Her husband asked the reason. She replied, “I have locked my phone with facial recognition. And it’s not recognising me without makeup.”
Beauty is in the eye...
My wife got a mud-pack, and looked great for two days... Then the mud fell off.
Tallboy
Mum to Son: Do you know what a wardrobe is for? Son: Yes. A wardrobe is where I hang my clothes when the entire floor is covered.
Time slip
A shoplifter was caught red-handed trying to steal a watch from an exclusive jewellery store. “Listen,” said the shoplifter, “I know you don’t want any trouble either. What do you say I just buy the watch, and we forget about this?” The manager agreed and rang up the sale. The crook looked at the slip and said, “This is a little more than I intended to spend. Can you show me something less expensive?”

No choice
What is the difference between inlaws and outlaws? Outlaws are usually wanted.
Denim dudes
Why were all of the ladies at the surprise party staring at the pair of handsome chromosomes? Because they weren’t wearing any genes!
The garden party
A wealthy woman is giving a garden party, and several well-to-do guests attend. While the party ensues, two gardeners are out on the back lawn working. One guest was watching the gardeners do their thing, and while one gardener was busy weeding, the other jumped up and did graceful swirling dance movements.
Taken by his grace, the guest remarked to the host, “That man is such a talented dancer, that I would pay him a hundred dollars to demonstrate his dancing before my aerobics class!” When the host asked the first gardener about such an arrangement, he yelled, “Hey Fred! Do you think for a hundred dollars you could step on that rake again?
Trumped
A fellow tries to cross the Mexican border on a bicycle with two big bags balanced on his shoulders. The guard asks, “What’s in the bags?” The fellow says, “Sand!” The guard wants to examine them. The fellow gets off the bike, places the bags on the ground, opens them
up, and the guard inspects... only to find sand. The fellow packs the sand, places the bags on his shoulders, and pedals the bike across the border. Two weeks later, the same situation is repeated... “What have you there?” “Sand” “We want to examine.” Same results... nothing but sand and the fellow is on his way again. Every two weeks for six months the inspections continue. Finally, one week the fellow didn’t show up. However, the guard sees him downtown and says to the fellow, “Buddy, you had us crazy. We sort of knew you were smuggling something. I won’t say anything, but what were you smuggling?” The fellow says, “Bicycles.”

Grammar kills
The village blacksmith hired an enthusiastic new apprentice willing to work long, hard hours. He instructed the boy, “When I take the shoe out of the fire, I’ll lay it on the anvil. When I nod my head, you hit it with the hammer.” The apprentice did exactly as he was told, and now he’s the new village blacksmith.

GET IN FRONT FOR 2018
You don’t get a second chance… …to make a first impression.
Up front and in front of the nation’s 36,000 frontline printers for 365 days next year, QPP SRA1 size year planners are used daily for checking paper and envelope sizes, looking for suppliers contact details and of course planning staff holidays, birthdays, appointments and other jollies.
ADVERTISE ALL YEAR FROM JUST £100! Limited space available.

An errant apostrophe, a poorly constructed sentence, a glaring spelling mistake — this will put off a potential customer or client. Don’t risk it, we can edit/proof as much, or as little, as you wish with prices starting at just £20.
Call Dan on 07957 291718, or email dan@copymatters.co.uk, for an informal chat, or a quote.
