PODDS PRINT BRINGS PERFECT BINDING INHOUSE WITH HORIZON Podds Print has enhanced its flexible and responsive service delivery following investment in an Intelligent Finishing Systems supplied Horizon BQ-270V single clamp perfect binder. The family owned company is celebrating 70 years in business this year. All day to day operations are controlled by Directors Michael, Richard and Matthew, the third generation of the family to do so. The Croydon based general commercial operation supports local businesses and blue chip operations. Podds Print has invested in a wide range of equipment to enable it to provide a complete in-house service, design and artwork, litho and digital printing, wide format signage services, hot foiling, die cutting, laminating and twin wire stitching. Managing Director David Podd says: “The addition of perfect binding completes our binding services. It also now means we are able to confidently take on work for high quality perfect bound books. We can be more responsive and we know the quality is there.” Podds Print’s 500cph Horizon BQ-270V single clamp perfect binder offers high quality perfect binding and on-demand production of variable thickness books. It includes an automated, sensor activated digital caliper system which consistently measures book block thickness and automatically transfers this data to the binder for quick, automated set-up for books of different thicknesses. It features a large 10.4″ intelligent colour touchscreen, job programming, and a compact configuration.

Podd added: “We originally looked at the smaller Horizon BQ160 but soon realised the Horizon BQ270 was more suited to the kind of work we would be managing in-house. We did also look at other systems on the market but liked the ease of set up on the BQ270 and we were confident that it could do what we wanted it to do. It went in very well and we are very happy with how it is running.” He concludes: “It was something we needed and it will help us grow that side of the business.” www.ifsl.uk.com

GLOBE PRINTS OVER 15KM OF SOCIAL DISTANCING GRAPHICS UK customer Globe Print has printed over 15km (9.3 miles) of advisory graphics on Drytac products including thousands of floor graphics. Established in January 2019 as a division of CSL, Globe Print’s 10,000sq ft print room in Marlow, Buckinghamshire is buzzing with over ten wide format printers using various ink technologies, flatbed printers and a range of finishing equipment. True to its motto of ‘Everything Printed’, the business produces signage, graphics, window films, banners, posters, floor graphics and more, including personalised work and direct to rigid substrate output. “We offer a huge range, but the skill is in the application the products are used for,” says Nick Wintle, Account Director, Globe Print. “There isn’t a typical client as we’re really keen to work with local businesses. Some customers just order a pack of business cards, while some will want a full re-branding. But key names include Waitrose, NHS, Transport for London, Andretti Formula E Team, local authorities and a vast number of golf clubs.” Over the last six months, however, much of this work has been floor graphics designed for social distancing, directional and awareness communications in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. So far, Globe Print has produced over 100,000 floor graphics for ‘basically just about every type of business’, says Nick. Along with major and independent retailers, utility companies and Transport for London, clients have included the NHS, schools and adventure playgrounds. The

print specialist has even supplied floor graphics for entire town centres and shopping streets, including for an advisory one-way pedestrian system in Globe Print’s home town of Marlow. This project comprised 250 temporary outdoor floor decals printed on Drytac Polar Grip graphics vinyl combined with Drytac Interlam Pro Emerytex laminate. Drytac offers an extensive range of floor graphics media, enabling print businesses and end users to specify the safest and most suitable product for each application. In addition to the Polar Grip/Interlam Pro Emerytex solution, Globe Print uses FloorTac Plus matte white monomeric PVC film designed for indoor graphics in heavy footfall areas, and SpotOn Floor 200 monomeric PVC film, developed for short term, indoor nonslip floor graphics without lamination.

“We also use Drytac Polar PET 170,” adds Nick. “This is a PVC free polyester film which was perfect for an environment focused retailer looking for a green solution.” Shaun Holdom, Global Product Manager, Drytac, comments: “Globe Print is just one print service provider who has produced many miles of floor graphics using Drytac media in 2020, with demand expected to continue for the foreseeable future. Drytac’s manufacturing facilities in the UK and Canada have been working around the clock to produce our wide range of products designed specifically for floor graphics, including new media for outdoor applications and eco-friendlier PVC-free films. We have made sure that Drytac inventory levels continue to be maintained to address demand going forward. www.drytac.com

DEZINES — “WE’RE CONFIDENT WE CAN GET IT RIGHT” DEZINES is primed to launch a new company producing bespoke photographic wall coverings, with a completely reconfigured print room based around a new HP Latex 335 print and cut solution. The new company, 360 Design Consultants Ltd, will be brought under the DEZINES umbrella of creative companies owned and managed by Kerry Sian Ballard, based in Newport, Wales. It is primarily an offshoot of Dezines Internet Solutions Limited, which provides front end web development and design, e-commerce platform solutions, video and photographic asset production in combination with Kerry’s experience as a professional photographer. Owing to the wide variety of its customers, existing services and skillsets of its staff, a photographic wall mural company is a complementary fit for DEZINES. “We produce wonderful photographic work for clients whose walls are currently bare, while others require easily changeable photographic backdrops for in-house photoshoots,” says MD Kerry “Among our clients there is considerable interest in photographic walls.” “I have found both HP laser printers and computers to be reliable, high quality and built to last,” comments Kerry. “I’ve also watched hundreds of videos on photo walls and heard the opinions of HP clients around the world, so had followed the development of HP Latex printers for our new business.” The HP Latex 335 print and cut solution was installed by Stanford Marsh in late 2019, following Kerry’s visit to HP’s stand at The Print Show in September. To accommodate this heavy duty, 1.63m (64”) machine, DEZINES reconfigured

its existing print room with a new layout, new distribution boards and over 150 metres of new cables. The HP Latex 335 will provide exceptional quality prints at high speeds, with its safe, ecofriendly latex inks delivering vibrant colours with durability. “Our first test projects came out very well — the print quality is superb,” says Kerry. “We’re very excited by the potential of the HP Latex 335; we’re ready to start printing and there’s room to expand.” The wall prints will be available from the new 360 Design Consultants website www.3SIXTYDC.com directly. Customers can choose from hundreds of images suitable for commercial and domestic environments, select their preferred size, and choose to install the print themselves or opt for a professional installation service. Each wall mural is priced per square metre at a rate below the market average, making the product more affordable and

therefore attractive for the consumer. Crucially, this is possible thanks to the web design expertise of DEZINES: by introducing the HP WallArt Suite solution with an e-commerce API, customers will be able to experiment with building their perfect virtual wall and place their order for 360 Design Consultants to print and post, in an efficient, cost effective workflow. “Some businesses have struggled to succeed in wall coverings, but we’re solving problems by having the right design, e-commerce and software in place,” says Kerry. “We’re confident we can get it right.” The cutting system bundled with the HP Latex 335 adds extra versatility for DEZINES, who is also accommodating vehicle wrapping into its overhauled premises in Newport. The new vehicle graphics service will be another new part of the DEZINES brand. www.dezines.co.uk • www.3SIXTYDC.com

SOLOPRESS PRODUCTIVITY BOOST WITH NEW HUNKELER Online printing business Solopress has said the purchase of new Hunkeler technology, as part of a wider investment drive, will allow the company to speed up its finishing processes and increase productivity. The Southend based business recently committed around £3.3m to the investment project, which included the purchase of two Hunkeler roll-to-roll machines and two Hunkeler roll-to-CS8 devices with 30 inch stackers. The Hunkeler kit has been put to use alongside a new HP PageWide Web Press T250 HD — the first press of its kind in the world operating in a commercial environment. Simon Cooper, managing director of Solopress, said that the decision to commit to Hunkeler technology, which is supplied in the UK by finishing specialist Friedheim International, was primarily due to Hunkeler’s leading reputation. “We have moved into web production for the first time with an investment in high speed continuous ink jet printing through the HP T250,” Cooper said. “We therefore needed to be able to finish from paper reels and naturally looked towards Hunkeler

because of their reputation in the market. “Among the attractions of moving towards web-based printing are the speed and simplicity of the finishing process, which is creating amazing productivity gains for our business.” Cooper went on to explain that the investment in the HP press and complementary Hunkeler kit has allowed Solopress to co-locate finishing with the printing, which he said has had a significant impact on productivity. “Our previous workflow required us to transport printed products to a different production unit for finishing,” Cooper said. “Additionally, the speed of finishing will enable us to get more work produced

XPD COMBINE DIGITAL DIE CUTTING WITH FOILING Recently, Leamington Spa based, XPD Print took the decision to expand their offering by introducing a VeloBlade 64 from Vivid Laminating Technologies meaning they are now able to offer packaging, kiss-cut labels, POS and much more. Since introducing the VeloBlade, XPD has seen an increase in orders and an improvement in their service. Colin Jones, Director at XPD said “the VeloBlade allows us to offer many additional products and services to our clients. It has meant we have been able to keep more services in-house so we’re more in control of deadlines and we have been inundated with work from across the UK”. With the vision of bringing more work in-house, expanding the services they offer as well as reducing costs and carbon footprint, XPD thought the VeloBlade to be the ideal system to help them achieve these aims. Colin said “the VeloBlade has given us the platform to grow the business. Extending our services has enabled us to attract many new clients who require packaging and POS. The fact we can offer these sought after services in-house, ensures we’re in complete control of customer experience from start to finish as we’re not reliant on outsourcing to fulfil orders”. Established back in 2012, XPD specialise in providing digital printing and wide format print across a broad spectrum of products. They also offer a wide variety of finishing services. Supported by their Matrix-530p, also from Vivid, they provide an impressive range of foiling,

6

spot-UV effects, lamination and personalisation. Discussing combining their Matrix and VeloBlade, Colin told us, “We’re able to produce an array of different types of packaging, many of which are soft touch laminated and foiled. The combination of the Matrix and VeloBlade enables us to efficiently produce unique and interesting products with relative ease. We’ve even started producing POS and are taking die-cutting orders from local printers”. When discussing their experience with Vivid and why they chose the VeloBlade, Colin had nothing but positive things to say; “Vivid were an existing supplier and have been very supportive of us. We needed to match the high quality of existing products and we found that compared to similar devices the VeloBlade’s output is best in class. The service and response we have received from Vivid has been exemplary, they’re great to do business with”. www.vivid-online.com • Tel: 01530 510946

in a shorter period of time with less labour overhead. “This in turn improves productivity and effectively extends our production window, ultimately leading to better prices and turnaround times for our customers, which will then lead to growth for our business. “We are eager to branch out from our existing offering of general commercial print to also encompass the publishing sector. This would be a new market for us, but this new equipment lends itself to serving that market well and our expertise in fast turnaround and slick workflow will be an advantage.” Cooper also had a note of praise for Friedheim International, saying that by working with the finishing specialist, Solopress was able to increase its knowledge of the finishing market. “We enjoyed dealing with Friedheim; they were very knowledgeable and helped us close the fairly large knowledge gap that existed in our business as we started investigating web-based production,” Cooper said. www.friedheim.co.uk • www.solopress.com

TECNAU LAUNCHES B2+ CUTTING/STACKING SYSTEM

The newly launched Tecnau Stack 1212 cutting/stacking system that streamlines production of B2+ digital print is now available from IFS. The latest addition to the Tecnau portfolio enables print operations to convert multi-up output from the emerging generation of B2+ colour digital presses, as well as sheet fed offset presses, into smaller, stacked finished pages without guillotine cutting. Tecnau’s Stack 1212 reduces manual print handling and consolidates labour intensive finishing operations in an automated single pass process. Key features of the stack 1212 system are: • Support for 1-up to 21-up impositions • Handles papers from 70 – 350 gsm • Input up to 6000 B2 sheets (up to 21” x 29.5”) per hour • Output as small as 4” x 5” postcards (102 x 127 mm) • Space efficient with footprint of about 100 square feet /30 sqm

System highlights include a double cut/gutter capability for bleed print, and a cutter/slitter cartridge based approach for easy job changeovers in minutes. The Stack 1212 features efficient offline operation to handle output from multiple presses. A pallet feeder option may be included for easy integration into an existing environment. Output sheets are neatly stacked and delivered – each job can be delivered to the conveyor one at a time, individually offset within the stack or delivered when the operator programmed stack height is reached. IFS Managing Director Eric Keane states: “This cost effective and space efficient cutting/stacking solution is ideally suited to users of B2 colour digital presses looking to automate their finishing. Its smooth and streamlined operation supports greater production efficiency and flexibility – ideal for operations looking to responsively increase their capacity.” www.ifs.uk.com

VIVID INTRODUCE ANTI-BACTERIAL LAMINATING POUCHES Recently, Vivid Laminating Technologies Ltd launched their new anti-bacterial laminating film range, Boss Bloc. This included matt and gloss options in OPP and a gloss pressure sensitive wide-format option. Due to the continued success of the range and increasing demand for such products, Vivid has taken the decision to add to the range with A4 and A3 gloss anti-bacterial pouches. Eliminating upwards of 99% of bacteria, Boss Bloc pouches are developed to provide protection for print and people. You’ll experience the premium finish of Boss laminates that you’re used to, with the added benefit of anti-bacterial properties. When discussing OPP Boss Bloc, Operation Manager at WeLove2Print.com, Kunal Pabari said, “it was vitally important for our customers to try and keep their experience as normal as possible. There has been no impact on quality, Boss Bloc looks great and works exactly like a standard laminating film but with the huge added value and benefit of it being anti-bacterial and eliminating 99% of bacteria”. As well as providing anti-bacterial protection, Boss Bloc pouches will be a fantastic cost-saving investment. Due to the ongoing pandemic, items such as menus have now become single use,

10

throw away products, Boss Bloc negates this as the anti-bacterial effect is made to last the lifetime of the product it is placed on. When discussing looking for alternative options to these problems, Kunal said, “Thorough cleaning after every use wasn’t an option and neither was single-use items as it became too expensive. So, we set out to find an alternative and Vivid provided us with exactly that. Our clients have been very happy”. Richard Marlow, Sales Director at Vivid said,

“Single-use and wastage is incredibly high at the minute and it doesn’t need to be. Boss Bloc pouches are an ideal solution for sectors such as retail, hospitality, leisure, healthcare, catering, education and many more. We want to be working with printers, enabling them to offer these alternative solutions to their customers. Working together we can all help protect people and greatly reduce wastage”. www.vivid-online.com

WHY YOU NEED TO KNOW RGB

Martin Christie says it’s an understatement to say that we are working in a different environment today. And while the long term consequences are uncertain for everyone, there are some immediate and obvious ones. Ones which perhaps have only accelerated trends that have been in the background for some years.

W

e have charted the decline of retail shopping in the high street in recent years. Now when people are actively discouraged from travelling into town centres by various social measures and travel restrictions, the effect on the traditional shop counter may be more profound than the obvious reduction of visitors. The simplistic approach that people can work from home, ignores the fact that home is not a self-contained unit unless it has a manufacturing facility in the back room and a small farm holding in the back garden. People still need things they cannot produce themselves. The much hyped 3D printing revolution failed to deliver a personal product production line as predicted, and no other radical development is on the immediate horizon. So what we have is a population that is trying to work at a distance from itself, when the entire course of human evolution has been based upon individuals coming together for the greater good. Until technology is able to produce sanitised workmates who can appear in a virtual reality workspace, we are left with a pantomime of squawking heads talking like Daleks and tapping screens to enquire if they can be heard or seen. This may be a rich source for satire, but it is also desperately inefficient and perfectly poised for misunderstanding and mistake. As a print shop we can’t expect to sort the problems of the world, but at least we can do the best we can to salvage our little bit of it adapting to these troubled changing times. As an industry we were amongst the first to embrace digital technology long before the end of the last century. Our customers gradually followed with the introduction of the personal computer, initially constrained by cables and erratic phone connections, as well as limited options for transferring media. This then became the laptop so that an individual could continue to work on the move, and bring larger files to the shop counter. At the same time internet connectivity sped up dramatically, as in consequence did the information carried by it. Anyone old enough to have tried to work through a modem connection will appreciate the difference. Anyone who didn’t would never believe civilisation could survive it. Now we are in the age of the mobile it’s easy 14

…if all of your customers are working in one mode does it make sense to be working in another? After all you are the only one who is going to understand the difference. to be persuaded that this little gadget will do everything, and moreover assume not only that everyone has one, but also that everyone who has one is expert in the relatively new discipline of the app. This is not a rant against the technology, but a cautionary note in that circumstances are forcing us all to rely on a piece of it that has serious limitations. We were already creating a generation that spent more time interacting with people on social media rather than actually meeting friends. Now we have at least a third of students trying to do their entire course work on a phone! As print on demand, we have become aware of the issues caused by customers working on small hand-held devices — the difficulty of checking proofs, or understanding file sizes. If you spend your working day on a large monitor it’s hard to immediately appreciate that what you see may not be what the customer sees, even if he or she has the time to look at it properly in between all the other apps competing for attention on the screen. Last month, I talked about the difference between printed and projected images, and the difficulty of explaining this to a customer who only sees something created by bright

light rather than dark ink. You can catch that in the October issue on the QPP website rather than have me repeat myself. The two entirely opposite processes lead on to a much confused conundrum of RGB versus CMYK. The predicament is that everything captured on camera or phone is in RGB, and that everything printed has to be in one form of CMYK. In simple terms the former can see more colours than the latter can reproduce. So the accepted wisdom in print has always been to work in CMYK. That is after all what you are going to print with, and especially if going to plate with litho printing, you need the four colour separations the process requires. However, if all of your customers are working in one mode does it make sense to be working in another? After all you are the only one who is going to understand the difference. As a photographer before digital, I didn’t need to know the two existed, only to appreciate that if my images were going into offset print for brochure or magazine I had to rely on a whole load of experts to get the colours more or less accurate and was content to leave them to something way out of my hands. PIXEL PROPHET environment, which is still valued by the purist is done with white light projected through lenses and filters onto colour receptive paper, so is actually RGB. The photo reactive chemicals are able to produce as wide a range of colours as the eye can see. This is why “proper” photos are always likely to be more vibrant, and they also have colour depth because they are essentially dyes absorbed into the paper itself rather than pigments that lie on the surface. Before film mini-labs started to move to dry inkjet-based machines, all of their output was RGB. Dye sublimation printers, whether for photos, mugs or mousemats are also able to handle a wider range of colours as they use a chemical reaction between the treated paper and the inks. So they recommend using RGB for best results. In large format inkjet printing opinion seems to be divided, but my experience leads me to support the case for RGB even if it is not technically correct. Obviously most conventional digital presses use just four colours — the cyan, magenta, yellow and black quartet. The first three on their own are quite pale, which is why they need the fourth as back up to alter the hue. This makes it quite difficult to mimic some colours as we know. Grey, for example, may have some blue or red in it depending on the proportions of the colours fixed by the machine. Yellows are similarly often too red or too blue. It is interesting that this problem is more evident in digital files sent to print rather than good old fashioned instant copies which often are more faithful to the original. This tends to prove that manufacturers have very much improved how their printers interpret an RGB image for CMYK output, and that some must go very wrong between computer and print engine. So if the printers are that good at sorting the colours out why not just let them get on with it? There will always be a limitation to the colours produced by a combination of only four colours, however clever the machine. That’s why inkjet manufacturers began to introduce more colours some years back. First they began with lighter versions of black, cyan and magenta — relatively easy to do when you have water-based inks rather than solid toner. Then came greens and oranges to fill in those gamut gaps other colours couldn’t reach. It’s not simply CMYK anymore but a sort of Super CMYK. There’s more to it than just adding more colours, however, as the same manufacturers must have realised that there was possibly no end to the ink escalation — after 12 colours, maybe 16 or 24? The complication of large amounts of consumables as well wastage and general servicing seem to have put a stop to this particular spiral. Instead, the concentration seems to have turned to perfecting the existing brew and how the colours combine in action to make a more faithful reproduction. year now for all manner of jobs from fast plan printing to fine art and photographic, and it is quite remarkable how good it is on all types of media, despite only having the four main colour inks. Certainly its capabilities question the expense of a printer with a more complicated specification for anything other than very high end output. For flexibility in the day-to-day demands of digital printing it’s remarkable how the invisible technology has progressed along with the more obvious inks. But perhaps the most important consideration for working in RGB is to do with editing software, and the options which this format allows. It doesn’t have to be Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom, both of which have seen massive jumps in their ability to investigate and adjust pixel data in minute detail. Most alternative programs have incorporated similar intelligence in their working space. Popular examples of cloning people and objects, and changing backgrounds are more straightforward to the digital mind than you might think. Clearly defined differences between one bit and another are easily sorted. Colour is actually more complex as you may be dealing with sometimes subtle hues that need gentle coaxing to get the most out of them. RGB gives you this possibility rather than CMYK which immediately restricts your options. You have only to view the same file in both in Photoshop to see how many features you can’t access in CMYK. It’s like going back 20 years to the digital dark ages, when you had hue and saturation and not much else. You are

then simply leaving it to the judgement of the printing machine to determine how it comes out. By fully utilising the colour options in RGB you can maximise the eventual output. Like the colour you see on the screen, print colour is actually composed of three distinct elements. Hue is the actual colour of the pixel or pigment. Saturation is the amount of that hue present. But there is also Luminance which is the measure of light either shone through in display, or in the case of hard print, reflected from it. Instead of the four basic print colours, the RGB spectrum has all the eight colours of the rainbow, each with three adjustment options, which by way of my simple maths makes it 24 times more accurate than CMYK. Not a scientific analysis but it helps understand the scale of difference. With experience and knowledge of your printers you should be able to look at a customer’s file and know approximately what adjustments are needed, long before a disappointing result comes out of the catch tray. So what may only be a few moments in pre-production may save a lot in time and scrappage, not to mention a loss in confidence from the customer. After all you’re supposed to be the expert. With everyone increasingly trapped in an RGB world it makes a lot more sense to go with the flow — literally. Next month I’ll take a close look at some of those tools available, and how you can use them. 15

PEOPLE IN PRINT

BRETT NEWMAN APPOINTED HYBRID SERVICES MD UK and Ireland Mimaki distributor, Hybrid Services has announced the appointment of Brett Newman as its managing director. Having held the role of chief operations manager at the company since 2017, Newman’s promotion sees him take overall responsibility for the day-to-day running of the business along with increased involvement in the company’s strategic direction. A print industry veteran, Newman has worked at all levels of reseller, manufacturer and distributor organisations with experience across technical, sales and marketing roles. “Appointing Brett as our first managing director is a key strategic decision for Hybrid as the company enters its 25th year in the print industry,” states Hybrid director, Peter Mitchell. “Whilst we have all experienced a challenging 2020, our view is firmly to the future.

With new products, projects and opportunities for Hybrid, our reseller partners and our customers, Brett’s leadership will play a key part in how this is delivered.” “When I joined Hybrid three years ago, I was attracted to the combination of Mimaki’s innovative and continually advancing product portfolio, and the team at Hybrid and its reseller partners,” Newman confirms. “Taking this role enables me to continue the work we’ve already started to further develop the business, our people and our product line-up.” “We’re delighted to appoint Brett in this new role,” reaffirms Hybrid director, Phil Thomas. “His experience and commitment ensure the business is in an excellent position to maximise the innovation we’re seeing from Mimaki.”

MBO AT DATALASE The current leadership team at coding and marking specialists, DataLase, has acquired full independence for the company through a management buyout (MBO) from SATO, the leading global provider of Auto-ID solutions. Based in Cheshire, DataLase was originally acquired by SATO in December 2016. The change in direction is centred on SATO’s strategic aim of concentrating resources on its auto-ID solutions business to build sustainable growth and enhance its corporate value, while DataLase looks to push forward with increased technological advancement and to further develop its Photonic Printing offering. Recognising these differing objectives, the two sides were able to come to an agreement on the transfer of shares.

“It is a really positive deal for the business and benefits all parties,” said Oliver Hoffman, National Head of M&A Mazars. “It has been great working with Clare, Paul and Ally, helping them transition from management into shareholders and I have every confidence the business will go from

AZTEC LABEL: A REAL FAMILY AFFAIR AS OWNER’S SON COMPLETES BPIF APPRENTICESHIP The son of the owner of Aztec Label has become the first employee at the business to successfully gain a professional qualification under the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF) Apprenticeship scheme. James Le Gresley, 19, has spent the last two years working to attain the Level 2 Award in Printing and Graphic Communications — Machine Printing. The BPIF training course takes in all aspects of managing print production, and although it runs over a 24 month period, it can be completed sooner dependent on the individual learner’s time away from press and their understanding of course content. “We’re very proud that James not only successfully completed the course, but that he did it well within the two year timeframe,” said Aztec Label Managing Director – and James’ dad — Colin Le Gresley. “James showed a keen interest in learning about the business from an early age and so this course was the perfect way for him to gain the professional qualifications and grounding that will help him in his future career.” As well as the on the job training, James undertook all BPIF coursework and meetings on site to complete his apprenticeship at the Aztec Label facility. “We purposely put James through many different departments of the business, taking in everything from platemaking and press operating through to finishing,” said Colin. “Now that he has qualified, James has immediately

COVER STORY

INTEC

EXPANDING PRINT POSSIBILITIES

Intec is a British company, established over 30 years ago. As the print industry has evolved during that time so too has Intec and over the last five years they have been developing and manufacturing cutting solutions as part of their range.

G

iven Intec’s heritage stems from the design and print markets, their range of cutters caters for print biased companies much more adeptly than some of the other brands. Intec introduced a range of flatbed tables specifically for print companies in 2017 and were one of the first to market with automated digital flatbed cutting tables incorporating auto-feeders launched at FESPA 2019. Intec’s flatbed range of machines, including the auto-feeding solution, enables the sheet to remain in one position while it is cut by a moving beam/carriage, ensuring elements can be cut completely out and also creasing operations, against a compressible cutting underlay, to provide a superior crease. 2020 sees Intec unveil its latest and further expanded range of cutting systems and solutions. The 2020 line up certainly doesn’t disappoint and is aimed to cover all budgets with their entry level FB550 — SRA3 cutting table starting at £2,999 and the range topping desirable auto-feeding FB8000 MK2 at the very attractive £12,999 price point. In the range is also a non-flatbed solution for the sheet label market, capable of ultra-fast sheet label production. With a mix of table sizes, features and automation which will you choose? Our guide below may help you there.

INTEC HAS A SOLUTION FOR ANY BUDGET

Intec FB550 — The Intec FB550 is Intec’s new entry level solution for short run cutting projects. It is extremely compact and affordable, and is the ideal solution for a company wishing to start moving towards the speciality print, packing and label markets, keen to produce mock ups, prototypes and small production runs. The FB550 is designed to take one SRA3+ sheet with a maximum media 24

area of 350mm x 520mm. The machine is supplied with a stand but can also be desk mounted if space is a major concern. Sheets are held in place with a 400W vacuum system, which is even included with the FB550 machine. To enable a wide range of projects to be cut, the FB550 is supplied with two cutting mats and nine blades (three for different label based projects and six for card based projects. The FB550 cutter itself is controlled using ColorCut, which works from Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw enabling the lines drawn to be sent directly to the cutter without need to learn new design programmes. The FB550 cutter uses a dual tool cutting head enabling a blade tool and a creasing tool to be fitted simultaneously so you can cut and crease in one operation. The head itself is capable of up to 1kg of pressure for both tools and technically you can cut materials up to 1mm thick, however Intec recommends a max of 450gsm or 600 micron boards. Registration is achieved using an optical IR sensor, to achieve precise cutting and the productivity for a medium box is approximately 40-60 secs. Priced at £2,999 ex vat including the 400w vacuum system, stand, two cutting mats and nine blades, the FB550 is hard to beat. NOVEMBER 2020 • QUICK PRINT PRO

COVER STORY Intec FB750 MK2 — The Intec FB750 MK2 is the next model up in Intec’s range released in October 2020, and builds on its predecessor the FB750, one of the most popular cutters in Intec’s range. In comparison to its FB550 sibling, the FB750 MK2 boasts a larger cutting table with a maximum media area of 500mm x 700mm designed to take one xB2 sheets or two x SRA3+ sheets helping improve productivity over its FB550 sibling. The key difference beyond size on this machine, making it one of the more popular in the range is the addition of the Vision3 CCD camera registration sensor. The Vision3 sensor is very quick, and scans QR codes to retrieve cut files on the fly, and will also enable ‘Productivity Mode’ where the cutter can accept multiple sheets placed on the bed and it will hunt for the next sheet and cut it, providing improved productivity from maximising the cutting table area. Like the FB550, it uses the same dual tool cutting head. Sheets are held in place with a more powerful 750W vacuum system, which is included with the FB750 MK2 machine and Intec even includes a special acoustic muffler, which reduces the sound in operation to just over 60db, which is close to normal office sound levels. Intec FB1150 — Intec’s FB1150 steps up the table size once again, delivering B1 cutting area capabilities (or two x B2 or four x SRA3+). The FB1150, also shares the new feature iterations delivered on the FB750 MK2, including the addition of the Vision3 CCD camera registration sensor. The Vision3 sensor makes even more sense on the larger table, really opening up the ‘Productivity mode’ enabling you to maximise the cutting table area and cut multiple sheets. It even spots if you place the sheets 180 degrees rotated, and will auto rotate your cutting lines to avoid waste or reduction in productivity. Like the FB750 MK2, it uses the same dual tool cutting head delivering 1kg of pressure and can accept two tools such as the blade/cut tool and the creasing tool at the same time. With the larger table size, comes even greater vacuum and Intec includes a 1000w vacuum system with the FB1150 machine along with the companion acoustic muffler, to reduce sound to just over 60db. Intec LC600 — Intec’s LC600 deviates from their typical flatbed systems, using a similar technology to vinyl cutting. However, unlike vinyl cutting where users often work with rolls of vinyl material, Intec’s LC600 incorporates a 250 sheet automated feeder designed so the LC600 can cut volumes of sheet labels produced from today’s digital presses. QUICK PRINT PRO • NOVEMBER 2020

Designed specifically for label cutting the LC600 uses a single tool cutting head delivering 760g force, enough for even troublesome synthetic media. The inclusion of Intec’s Vision3 CCD camera technology, enables ultra-fast yet precise registration and the ability to read QR codes placed on the printed sheet for automated production and even mixed batches. The LC600’s ultra-fast cutting head operates at lightning speed — 960mm/s, meaning it is often less than 30sec per SRA3 sheet. Sheets are ejected after cutting into the catch tray, which after use, can be slid conveniently away under the cutting minimising its already small foot print. Intec FB8000 MK2 — Intec’s range topping FB8000 MK2, combines the pinnacle of their flatbed development from the FB750 MK2, with automation.

An advanced pneumatic auto feeder loads sheets, with the cutter using the Intec dual tool 1kg cutting head to cut and crease the sheet and off loads into a catch tray whilst loading another for cutting. The Vision3 sensor, provides the necessary automation to enable you to load the flatbed’s stacker and leave it to run, unattended.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE AUTO-FEEDING FB8000 MK2

• High capacity auto feeder: 2000 sheets or 25Kg • Pneumatic feed system with simultaneous eject and sheet load for higher productivity • 7th Generation Registration CCD Camera sensor (Vision3) for precise alignment • QR code job recognition and auto job retrial, enabling mixed batches to be run and full unattended production • Comes equipped with Vacuum table and Vacuum system • Simplified workflow that uses the graphics applications you already know (Adobe Illustrator or Core! Draw) so no new design programs to learn. DURHAM BOX NEW PACKAGING FOR PLANT-BASED FOOD

Packaging company, Durham Box, has created an end to end design and digitally printed packaging solution for plant based food brand, Tiba Tempeh. Founded in 2019, the London start-up has its range of innovative organic tempeh products stocked in over 500 stores across the UK as well having an online shop. Previously using a simple 0201 brown box and solid board sleeve for their packaging, Tiba Tempeh’s founders tasked Durham Box with creating an impactful brand style to convey their core values for a healthier world and that plants have the answers. Tasty, healthy, easy and sustainable... you can have it all when you GRAB LIFE BY THE PLANTS®. Being able to deliver a single source for design,

production, in-house digital printing and finishing facilities, Durham Box produced the vibrant artwork, which was then printed on the firm’s industry leading Nozomi C18000 digital press - Durham Box being the first corrugated packaging manufacturer in the UK to offer single pass LED inkjet production for packaging, POS displays and corrugated board. Commenting on the packaging, founder of Tiba Tempeh, Alex Longton, commented: “I am absolutely delighted with the printed boxes, which help add a lot of value to our brand and shopper experience. We were previously using brown boxes

and one of our regular customers sent us an email after receiving their order, saying: ‘Just got the order, love the new branded box packaging!’” Durham Box’s Paul Barker said: “Delivering innovative packaging concepts from initial sketches to the brand’s print ready state, and managed through our unrivalled production technology with the Nozomi C18000, is how we achieve great solutions, with added value for our clients at Durham Box. Tiba Tempeh is a great brand and we look forward to working together in the future.” www.durhambox.co.uk

A GRAPHICAL BOARD PRODUCT WITH SERIOUS PUNCH For printers looking to create digitally printed, stand out, luxury packaging that also has sufficient durability and the right environmental credentials the options can be challenging. However, the latest innovations in digital print are opening up the possibility to create packaging with some serious punch. At 380gsm (457 micron), Invercote Creato achieves maximum stiffness while being lighter in weight than products with a comparative thickness, which helps to reduce environmental impact through use of fewer raw materials. Plus, its super smooth and extremely high white surface produces brilliant results on a number of digital printers. Invercote Creato 380gsm has been successfully tested on liquid toner HP Indigo 5000,7000, 10000, 12000 and 30000 series (equipped with thick substrate kit), and dry toner Xerox iGen 5,Xerox Iridesse and Ricoh C9200 machines. The dimensional stability of this two sided, multi layered product makes it an excellent choice for multi-step processing, while its lightfastness resistance ensures consistent colour representation and no yellowing. These characteristics, along with its thickness and stiffness make it an ideal choice for luxury packaging as well as a wide range of other graphic packaging applications, including cosmetics, med tech, food and confectionary. “Invercote Creato is available in a wide range of weights and sizes, with the 380gsm providing the possibility of opening up new business opportunities

26

for printers and designers by helping them push the frontiers of luxury packaging design”, says Steve Chappell, Graphical Board Development Manager at Antalis. Invercote Creato is produced by Iggesund at their mill in Sweden which has recently been awarded Platinum for sustainability by Ecovadis, putting it in the top 1% off all 65,000 companies they have rated. Invercote Creato 380gsm is sold exclusively in the UK by Antalis www.antalispackagingsolutions.co.uk

ROLAND SC-RD ROTARY AXIS 360º UV PRINTING

whenever it’s required. There are no printer parts to remove or cables to connect – the SC-RD is powered by the VersaUV itself.

DEVELOP A FULLY ROUNDED BUSINESS AND EXPLORE NEW MARKETS

Roland DG has boosted the versatility of the VersaUV LEF and LEF2 Series bench top printers with a clever accessory that makes it possible to print directly on and around the entire surface of cylindrical objects. The SC-RD rotary axis is quick and simple to install, which means printers can immediately start developing new revenue opportunities in the personalised print market. The SC-RD rotary axis complements the incredible printing power of VersaUV LEF-20, LEF-200, LEF2-200, SF-200, LEF-300 and LEF2-300 UV-LED bench top printers. Roland’s new device enables these machines to extend their renowned versatility to print directly to the whole surface of cylindrical

items. Matched with Roland’s durable, high adhesion UV inks, the SC-RD opens up unlimited opportunities for personalising items from bottles, cans and candles, to cosmetics and packaging.

EASY INSTALLATION AND SIMPLE INTEGRATION WITH VERSAWORKS 6

VersaWorks 6, Roland’s latest and most powerful RIP software, integrates easily with the SC-RD, which means no need to spend time on changing the workflow and the standard rotary mode function makes it easy for you to switch between modes. The accessory can be easily assembled and installed in the VersaUV by the end user, so it’s ready to use

The SC-RD is an affordable way to offer new applications and access new markets. As an addition to an existing VersaUV workflow, or an integral part of a new investment, the rotary axis can help print businesses expand. It’s ideal for packaging – including personalised items, mock-ups and short runs – plus cosmetics and beauty, home décor, food and drink, gifts and promotional products, and industrial products such as prototypes. “The SC-RD is truly the easiest way to expand the possibilities of a UV printer, thanks to its simple software integration and fast installation,” says Paul Willems, Director of Business Development and Product Management, Roland DG EMEA. “This new accessory builds on the already fantastic material versatility and ease of use of the VersaUV LEF and LEF2, to help print businesses access new markets and customers.” www.rolanddg.eu

NOZOMI WHITE UV LED INKS Durham Box is the first packaging manufacturer in the U.K. to upgrade its EFI™ Nozomi C18000 single pass inkjet digital corrugated printer with white UV LED ink from Electronics For Imaging, Inc. The upgrade to print with white ink gives the County Durham based corrugated packaging business the power to expand its customer reach as well as provide its customers a competitive edge – thanks to the ability to print a broader range of high end packaging, point of sale (POS) display graphics and free standing display unit (FSDU) designs. EFI Nozomi C18000 printers are used at leading corrugated packaging and display businesses worldwide, and more than a third of those users print with the white ink available for the printer. Using EFI Nozomi white ink on corrugated boxes extends the colour gamut Durham Box can achieve and gives the company the ability to accurately represent its clients’ brand colours on brown kraft board. The white ink also allows for accurate printing of photographic images, including vivid designs, while maintaining the eco-friendly look of the brown board surface. Plus, Durham Box can achieve a higher value appearance for many jobs using white ink as a base under colour designs, as the white ink transforms the matte appearance of CMYK inks on uncoated boards into a highly attractive gloss. “Having the ability to print with white ink will

28

process ink set. The certification speaks to the ability of Nozomi printed corrugated board being able to safely, efficiently and effectively enter recycling streams.

GIVING CUSTOMERS AN EDGE IN THE RETAIL WORLD

give our customers an option that until now has not been available through this technology,” said Durham Box POS Business Development Director Andy Smith. “This will allow Durham Box to work with some major brands creating that total display and packaging solution. Of course, being the first in the U.K. to offer white ink confirms Durham Box’s intention to be a major provider of 3D/POS/display and packaging across all market sectors.”

SUPERIOR SUSTAINABILITY

The Western Michigan University (WMU) Pilot Plant recently provided an OCC (old corrugated containers) certification for EFI Nozomi white ink, verifying its recyclability and repulpability. This new certification follows the WMU Pilot Plant’s initial OCC certification provided for the EFI Nozomi C18000 printer’s CMYK four colour

“Since purchasing the Nozomi last year, the immediate focus was to enhance our packaging offering to existing and potential new clients, offering a fast turnaround, high quality digital solution, especially for customers in e-commerce and display,” said Smith. “This in turn has delivered significant growth for Durham Box. “Our customers’ success is very important to us and we wanted to offer them the best technology on the market,” he added. “Getting noticed is critical in the competitive world of retail, and thus, printing a white ink base really enhances the brand identity. White on craft board FSDUs certainly delivers that ‘wow’ factor. And now, this is something we can deliver to our customers.” Durham Box’s ultra high speed single pass inkjet printer prints up to 75 linear metres (246 linear feet) per minute; it can produce up to 10,000 890x890-millimetre (35x35-inch) boards per hour two up. Its low odour, UV LED inks are GREENGUARD certified, contain no hazardous volatile organic compounds and do not require vapour recovery. www.efi.com

PARROT PRINT PANDEMIC UPLIFT WITH FOURTH EPSON London personalised photo canvas printing business Parrot Print has invested in its fourth Epson SureColor SC-S80600 following a period of record growth. Founded by photographers with a genuine passion and understanding for providing customers with top results, Parrot Print sells directly to consumers via its website. It made the latest addition to its responsive print production environment to address rapid growth driven by an increase in orders placed during lockdown. “We saw a sudden 400% increase in sales volume over the lockdown period,” explains Matt Dahan, owner of Parrot Print. “We needed to expand our printing capabilities and packing stations to meet demand. We are still seeing significant growth and expect to make further purchases in the next 12 months.” The ability to react so quickly was enabled by the operation’s own developed automatic order processing software and its fleet of responsive Epson SureColor SC-S80600s. The 64 inch systems feature Epson UltraChrome® GS3 nine colour solvent ink – including a red solvent along with the option for white or metallic silver inks – for outstanding photographic print quality, durability, and media compatibility. Their combined precision media feeding system and high performance Dual-Array PrecisionCore® TFP print head, support enhanced productivity. Parrot Print chose its first Epson SC-S80600 when it was looking for a reliable wide format printer to replace existing printers. Matt states: “When we were in the market for a new solution, all research led us to the Epson for our requirements. We did review other solutions but liked the Epson because it was cost effective and easy to operate. Also important was the print speed possible when running high quality print settings.” Matt continues: “Print speed and print quality were the big considerations for us. We offer same day dispatch on all orders placed before 12pm, and our customers expect the ultimate in print quality with no compromises. Until we moved to the Epson SC-S80600s there was always a trade-off between speed and print quality.” There were other capabilities that proved important he pointed out: “Another fantastic feature was its reliability and ink costs, our machines can be running for

24 hours a day, seven days a week, and we’ve never had any major issues at all. We really hammer these printers and they are totally bomb-proof – a big change from our previous printers.” The productivity, reliability and high quality results have enabled Parrot Print to confidently explore new markets. Matt states: “We’ve been able to grow into the US market, as well as the EU. Due to the speed, and quick turnaround of the printers, we’ve been able to print so much more out of the printer footprint we have. We are currently seeing over 100% growth year on year.” He also adds: “We require half the amount of physical staff a traditional manufacturing business of our size would need. Each manufacturing staff member has 40 sq/ft of space to themselves, at their own stations, so we were socially distancing before the pandemic!” As for working with Epson he says: “Epson have been great partners throughout, offering excellent advice and feature requests. Their customer support and technical advice is second to none, offering next day callouts for any technical issues. For example, when we had an unfortunate power surge that blew out our printheads they were all replaced by the next day, ensuring almost no downtime.” www.parrotprint.com • www.epson.co.uk

EXACLAIR WINS NEW WORK WITH HORIZON INVESTMENT Exaclair Ltd, has won new work following the decision to update its finishing capabilities with a Horizon SPF-200L bookletmaker from Intelligent Finishing Systems (IFS). The Kings Lynn operation and UK subsidiary for the Exacompta Clairefontaine Group, is a supplier of stationery, office supplies, art materials, craft products, educational activities, stickers, luggage, leatherware and wrapping paper to wholesale and retailers nationwide. David Swallow, Production Manager, explains: “We needed to replace our very old folding machine and update our manual methods used to manufacture our soft cover books. The Horizon SPF-200L was the best replacement we found within our price range that could cover all our existing folding and stitching requirements. It has already helped us win new additional work from our customers and we expect it will pay for itself within two years.” He continues: “We did look at other systems from a number of manufacturers but what stood out for us was its layout and module approach. We liked the fact we can add additional modules at a later date.” The 4,500bph Horizon SPF-200L landscape feed bookletmaker combines stitching and folding with the ability to handle sheets up to 640mm in length. JDF-ready, it offers instant set-ups via a large icon based colour touchscreen for user friendly operation. The screen can be used for on the run fine tune adjustments as well as the storage and recall of up to 200 jobs. The teams did have to manage some issues resulting from the pandemic

30

and Swallow explains: “Luckily we completed trials and placed the order before we were all on full lockdown. The pandemic did cause the installation date to be delayed but this didn’t affect delivery of any customer orders. Following installation and the completion of training the system is fully operational while the operators observe social distancing, cleaning and health and safety measures.” As for working with IFS he states: “We found IFS staff to be excellent with their assistance and knowledgeability on the equipment sold.” Image shows: David Swallow with the bookletmaker www.ifsl.uk.com

DRYTAC HELPS ENSURE FLOOR GRAPHICS ARE SAFE Drytac, a specialist manufacturer of floor graphics media, has released several overview guides on this key communications application. The four dedicated guides cover the essential aspects of floor graphic projects - such as safety obligations and insurance - in retail, construction and housing, stadiums, and schools and universities respectively. The use of floor graphics accelerated at an unprecedented rate in 2020, owing to the need for social distancing and directional signage that can be easily observed. Drytac is a major brand in this field, manufacturing floor graphics media - along with an extensive range of other sign and graphics products - around the clock at its factories in the UK and North America. As such, it has taken the lead on safety: the chief concern of any organisation using floor graphics for public use. The new guides provide a general overview of floor media, including locations and surfaces, types of graphic solutions and relevant Drytac products. An FAQ section explains slip ratings and certifications and the tests to achieve them, with advice on how to maintain graphics to avoid slips and trips. It also covers the legal responsibilities of the supplier, installer and customer. These legal responsibilities are based on testing

and retesting of all Drytac products. Every batch undergoes in-house QC testing to ensure it achieves the British Standard BS 7976-2/European Standard EN 13036-4/North American Standard ASTM-E303 for slip resistance. Research has confirmed that this test and its result, called a Pendulum Test Value (PTV/BPN), is the most reliable and accurate method for evaluating slip resistance.

The UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) along with its global counterparts and many insurance companies have adopted this as the standard test method for assessing slip resistance. “At Drytac, safety is our priority,” comments Shaun Holdom, Global Product Manager, Drytac. “Slip ratings are not based on a one-off test sample done in a lab years ago, but on the results of the strictest assessment available, on every single batch. “We offer the correct ratings and insurance backed warranties to make life easier for our customers, providing peace of mind that every Drytac floor decal offers legal and financial protection. In short, Drytac products keep you safe.” Drytac’s comprehensive range of specialist floor graphics media includes Polar Grip with Interlam Pro Emerytex for smooth outdoor floors, Polar Street FX for rough outdoor surfaces, SpotOn Floor 200, FloorTac Textures and Polar Floor PET 170 for indoor public spaces and many other innovative solutions. Details on these products and more can be found in the overview guides, available to download for free via www.drytac.com/floorgraphicguide. Drytac can also supply a list of Drytac-certified print and install partners. Customers are recommended to get in touch for information. www.drytac.com

THE JOKE’S ON YOU

READERS’ SCRIBES

SOMETHING TO SHARE? DOG AT THE PARK

COOKING WITH WINE

I can’t take my dog to the park because the ducks keep trying to bite him. I guess that’s what I get for buying a pure bread dog.

I tried cooking with wine for the first time. After five glasses, I forgot why I was in the kitchen.

WHAT’S IN A MIDDLE NAME?

LIKE FATHER, LIKE DAUGHTER

What is the sole purpose of a middle name? So your kids know when you are really angry.

Dorothy, the little daughter of a tyre salesman, had seen triplets for the first time. “Oh mother,” she cried out upon returning home, “what do you think I saw today?” “I can’t imagine, dear, what?” “A lady had twins, and a spare!”

LEARNING WITH TEQUILA

DIRECT BANKING

Tequila is an excellent teacher. Just last night it taught me to count. One Tequila, Two Tequila, Three Tequila, Floor!

SALES BLURB INTERPRETED

NEW – Different colour from previous design. ALL-NEW – Parts are not interchangeable with previous design. EXCLUSIVE – Imported product. UNMATCHED – Almost as good as the competition. FOOLPROOF OPERATION – No provision for adjustments. ADVANCED DESIGN – The advertising agency doesn’t understand it. IT’S HERE AT LAST – Rush job. Nobody knew it was coming. FIELD TESTED – Manufacturer lacks test equipment. HIGH ACCURACY – Unit on which all parts fit. FUTURISTIC – No other reason why it looks the way it does. REDESIGNED – Previous flaws fixed. We hope. DIRECT SALES ONLY – Factory had a big argument with distributor. YEARS OF DEVELOPMENT – We finally got one to work. BREAKTHROUGH – We finally figured out a use for it. MAINTENANCE FREE – Impossible to fix. MEETS ALL STANDARDS – Ours, not yours.

Thomas: What’s your pet pig’s name?

Man: I’m new around here. Will you please direct me to the bank? Little boy: I will, but only if you pay me ten pounds. Man: Why should I pay you so much? Little boy: Because bank directors always get paid too much.

HISTORICAL WOMEN

Everyone has heard of the historical figure, Karl Marx but no one remembers his sister, Onya, who invented the starting pistol.

ONE, TWO, THREE, GONE.

Three dinosaurs stumble across a magic lamp. They rub it and a genie appears. “I have three wishes, so I’ll give one to each of you,” the genie announces. The first dinosaur thinks hard. “Alright,” he says, “I’ll have a big, juicy, piece of meat.” Instantly, the biggest, juiciest piece of meat he’d ever seen appears in front of him. Not to be outdone, the second dinosaur thinks even harder. “I know! I’ll have a shower of meat!” Immediately, huge pieces of meat rain down around him. The third dinosaur, certainly not to be outdone, thinks harder than the previous dinosaurs. “I’ve got it!” he cries, “I want a MEATIER shower!

FURLOUGH BEER

My boss made me go into the office during furlough. Halfway through the day, he came in to check up on me and caught me having a beer. He said to me, “You can’t drink while you’re working.” I said, “Oh, don’t worry – I’m not working.”

Felix: Ballpoint.

AMERICAN FOOTBALLERS ARE ANIMALS

There was a football game of note between the big animals and the little animals. The big animals were crushing little animals and at half time, the coach made a passionate speech to rally the little animals. At the start of the second half the big animals had the ball. The first play, the elephant got stopped for no gain. The second play, the rhino was stopped for no gain. On third down, the hippo was thrown for a five-yard loss. The defence huddled around the coach and he asked excitedly, “Who stopped the elephant?” “I did,” said the centipede. “Who stopped the rhino?” “Uh, that was me too,” said the centipede. “And how about the hippo? Who hit him for a five yard loss?” “Well, that was me as well,” said the centipede. “So where were you during the first half?” demanded the coach. The centipede quipped, “I was putting my boots on.”

IMPOSSIBLE SALES TARGET

Sales Trainer: “The word ‘Impossible’ does not exist in my dictionary!” Trainee Salesman: “Well Sir, maybe you should have checked it first before buying it.”

FOOD CRITIC

Apparently, you can’t use “beef stew” as a password. It’s not stroganoff!

CIRCUS ACT

A man decides to join the circus. He shows up to demonstrate his skills to the impresario. “I have the most unusual act,” he announces. “I’m sure it will amaze you.” He climbs up to the high wire and jumps off! He flaps his arms wildly, and finally his fall slows and the man begins to fly. He soars upward, turns, and swoops back again. Finally, he stops in mid air and gently lowers himself to the ground. The impresario says, “Is that all you’ve got? Bird impressions?”

Thomas: Is that his real name?

Felix: No, that’s his pen name.
