Duplo Presents London Calling 5i NOW in its fifth year London Calling has become a well established event on the print industry calendar. Duplo has once again brought together a group of key partners from pre to post press to share their latest innovations. The event taking place from 26-27 November 2013 is being held at London’s iconic Somerset House, a venue that hails itself as an inspiring space for art, culture and creative exchange. London Calling this year has been named LC5i for its iconic venue along with the inspirational ideas, innovative applications, new more intelligent technology and integrated solutions that will be on show. Sarah Crumpler, UK Marketing Manager for Duplo explained: “This year we started planning London Calling with a customer forum. The overwhelming feedback was that printers want to be inspired, so the focus of this year’s event is on inspiring our visitors. We don’t want them to walk away having simply seen some great pieces of equipment, of course that’s important but we also want to help spark new ideas. “LC5i has been designed to present how the latest technology can be used to create added value and generate new revenue streams for printers.”

Time Art Gallery on UK festival tour TIME Art Gallery’s Art on the Street team have been on their annual tour of the UK’s summer festivals, including Glastonbury, T in the Park, Latitude, Womad, Bestival, Strawberry Fields, V, Reading and Leeds, where they promote and sell signed, collectable limited edition prints and original works of art. Representing the works of a number of independent London based artists such as Dan Avenell, Lewis Campbell, Steve Moss and Maria Luisa Azzini, Time Art Gallery produces the high quality artworks using Epson large format inkjet printers. Time Art Gallery is an artist run fine art publisher established over seven years ago by photographer Yannick Yanoff and artist Michael Kozlov. Originally set up to sell artworks from an outlet in London’s Camden Lock Market, the company expanded and opened further outlets in Greenwich Market and Portobello Road Market – all of which are still in operation. It also launched its first edition website www.timeart.co.uk which offers quality signed limited edition prints and original works of art to order online. Recognising the consumer demand for high quality prints and artworks, Yannick and Michael opened, and continue to run, successful stores within four UK shopping centres: Bluewater, Kent; Bullring, Birmingham; Meadowhall, Sheffield; and Touchwood, Solihull. The company currently owns six Epson printers: three 44-inch Stylus Pro 9800 models and three 24-inch Stylus Pro 7890s, all supplied by Epson distributor Colourbyte (www.colourbyte.co.uk). Each of the four shopping centre stores has its own dedicated Epson printer which not only allows them to replenish stock levels but also enables them to print on-demand from their artwork collections in store. They also offer a bespoke canvas print service so that customers can bring in their own digital images to be printed. The remaining two Epson printers are based at the company’s office in London and are used on a daily basis to produce canvasses and limited edition prints. The artworks are printed onto a range of media including semi-matte proofing paper, glossy photo paper, and a range of synthetic canvasses which are hand stretched onto 4cm deep wooden frames and secured with transparent varnish. As artists, Yannick and Michael are always pushing the boundaries and will often experiment with different media and finishes before placing the finished artworks in their stores or online.

The very first picture Yannick sold was printed on an Epson printer and he’s been using them ever since. “Our aim is to produce high quality professional photographs and fine art prints with high colour accuracy,” says Yannick. “We use Epson printers because we know we can rely on them to create true to original prints that our artists and customers will be happy with. Epson has the best reputation for quality and reliability and the printers are very easy to install and use.” With print speeds up to 40 sqm per hour the Stylus Pro range of printers offer an ideal combination of accurate colour reproduction with unbeatable productivity and have been designed to help professional photographers and the fine art market create true to life prints at high speed. Using Epson’s 8-colour UltraChrome K3 with Vivid Magenta inkset in combination with the TFP print head for enhanced dot quality and crisp, clear images, the printers offer lab quality prints. They achieve one of the highest colour gamuts on the market with consistently smooth gradations and also offer a superior range of natural looking grey tones. Three densities of black, comprising a standard photo or matte black (selected automatically depending on the media) plus a light black and light light black, create neutral black and white prints with no colour cast and perfect tonal range. The company has recently invested in another Epson Stylus Pro 7890, to be installed in the Arndale Centre, Manchester, and plans to invest in three more Epson printers before the end of the year, as well as working on a project to bring Time Art Gallery to Westfield Stratford in London. Yannick has his artistic eye fixed firmly on the future: “I strongly believe that being visible on the high street and offering customers high end quality printed products is the key to Time Art Gallery’s success. With Epson technology we are confident that we can continue to offer the highest quality artworks as well as introducing new products to our portfolio.” Nick White, business manager, ProGraphics, at Epson UK says: “Time Art Gallery has tapped into a consumer market which wants quality artwork at affordable prices and the Epson Stylus Pro range of printers fits the bill perfectly. We look forward to working closely with Yannick and the team on their future projects.” For further information visit the Time Art Gallery and Art on the Street websites: www.timeart.co.uk; www.artonthestreet.com

The Canvas Print Studio installs Epson SureColor THE Canvas Print Studio was founded as a subsidiary of Interact Repro Services in 2009 by Rafal Sokol and brings its customers images and photos to life with the production of the highest quality canvases. The Canvas Print Studio creates stretched and rolled canvases, poster prints, giclee prints and Epson Digigraphie prints — all from the original pictures and artwork supplied by its range of customers including professional photographers, the general public and trade customers — primarily via the company’s website www.thecanvasprintstudio.co.uk. Quality and efficiency is at the core of everything The Canvas Print Studio does. In order to maintain the highest quality, longest lasting output, the company uses branded canvas media, original inks and premium European pine stretcher bars with wooden wedges. The company also has an impressive, intuitive, on-line ordering system which enables customers to see exactly how their photos will be cropped and what size will work best. When the company first started out with its Epson aqueous large format printers, the production process meant that each canvas had to be printed, dried and then varnished to achieve long-lasting quality. However, with the introduction of the new eco-solvent technology, Rafal Sokol realised he could speed up the production process whilst maintaining the very highest quality output. He explains, “We started looking at the new ranges of eco-solvent printers on the market which would remove the need for time consuming varnishing without compromising quality and thereby speed up the delivery time to customers. I contacted Steve Guest at Stanford Marsh Group Graphics (SMGG) and met up with him at Sign & Digital UK 2013 to discuss the various options available in the marketplace.” SMGG is a reseller of a wide gamut of printing hardware and the associated peripherals and was able to offer independent advice as to the best fit solution for The Canvas Print Studio’s needs. After reviewing the various options available, Rafal Sokol decided upon the Epson SureColor SC70600. The Epson SureColor SC70600 roll to roll printer can produce everything from exhibition displays, posters, banners, textiles, backlit panels and POS materials to vehicle wraps, wallpaper and labels. It is Epson’s first 64-inch (162.6cm) printer to support white and metallic ink simultaneously, enabling

creative print makers, specialist sign makers and professional display printers to expand their service portfolios. The advanced ink formula means prints are lightfast for up to three years outdoors without lamination. The printer was installed in May 2013. The delivery process was entertaining as the printer was carried through to The Print Studio’s premises in one piece — although it had to be turned on its side to get it through the door! Rafal continues, “It was a bonus that the printer could be delivered in one piece as it meant we were very quickly able to get the printer up and running. We were printing test prints within an hour or so and the machine was fully operational within four hours, after media profiles were created.” Since installation, the Epson SureColor SC70600 has enabled The Canvas Print Studio to expand its product line and speed up delivery to its customers. Rafal comments, “The printer enables us to offer new, highly creative end products to our customers and the end result is truly unique output. Our customers are always coming up with new ideas and our ability to offer white and metallic inks opens up a raft of creative opportunities for all sorts of applications.” Rafal Sokol is using Epson original inks in the printer. He says, “The ecosolvent inks from Epson are almost half the price of the aqueous inks we used in our old printer. Not only are they very cost effective, they offer greater benefits due to the applications they open up and ultimately lead to greater profitability for our business. The output created by the inks is also much more stable.” The working relationship with SMGG has also been a very positive experience for The Canvas Print Studio. “As eco-solvent technology was a whole new printing technique for us, we needed someone who we could rely on to be able to recommend and install the right product to meet our needs. We were reassured by SMGG that the Epson printer would do exactly what we needed it to do — and that has proven to be the case.” Rafal concludes, “For The Canvas Print Studio, the Epson SureColor SC70600 has ensured that the next day delivery of quality, long lasting prints is now a reality.” For more information: www.thecanvasprintstudio.co.uk; www.smgg.co.uk

Penalty Shoot Pays Out To Local Charity GRAPHICS and Print, the Telford based commercial printers organised an open day following the recent merger between Graphics and Print and TAWs Printers. The event provided customers and future customers with an opportunity to learn more about the benefits of the merger, to meet the new team and find out more about the products and services that are now available. The day proved a real hit with the visitors and none more so than Caroline Dalton from Tanners Wines, who won a charity penalty shootout competition as part of the open day, beating off competition from approximately 70 participants. Managing Director Martin Kells explains more: “When we started to plan the open day, we knew that we wanted to share some of the obvious messages with our clients such as how the merger affected them, what benefits it will bring and what services we now have the capability of providing but we also wanted to use the day to generate some money for charity as we have a huge focus within Graphics and Print, on helping the community that we serve. So we decided that off the back of the football predictions competition which launched last month for a second season running, we would hold a penalty shoot-out for all attendees, with the opportunity for one lucky winner to walk away with £200 to donate to the

charity of their choice and a further £50 of store vouchers for themselves. Right up until about 3.00 o’clock in the afternoon, Rachel from EPMA was winning the competition but she was beaten with one of the last shootouts to take place on the day, by Caroline Dalton who really did put a lot of us to shame with four superbly struck penalties. Assuming that England do make it to the World Cup in Rio, I think they could learn a thing or two from Caroline who was lethal from the spot. Congratulations Caroline and I hope your chosen charities enjoy receiving your donations.” Caroline chose to donate the £200 prize money to a local charity, Shrewsbury Drapers Alms Houses, who provide housing for the elderly. Everyone at Graphics and Print was delighted to see the award going to a local organisation as they take their responsibility for looking after the local community very seriously. They are the only commercial printer to make a commitment that each of its employees will spend a minimum of two working days a year, during work time, to work in the community, helping under privileged people to have a better life. Graphics and Print provide an end to end print manufacturing service. The design, manufacturing, packaging and distribution all take place under one roof, ensuring that quality checks can be made from start to finish. From design, through to print, they offer award winning design and print at a very competitive price. You can check out some of their pricing by logging onto their website at www.graphicsandprint.com

Mimaki gives Caravelle Creative 300% boost CARAVELLE Creative has reported a 300 per cent increase in output since the installation of a new Mimaki JV33-160 inkjet printer, supplied by i-Sub Digital. The new 1.6m wide format engine replaced a five year old Mimaki JV3-160 in order to increase productivity, improve quality and meet the demands of the busy design agency’s customers. According to Ian Daniels, Managing Director of Caravelle Creative, the JV33-160 has achieved this threefold. “Since we installed the machine our output has gone up by about 300 per cent,” he says. “I’ve been asking myself, ‘How did we ever survive with the old machine?’ – and it’s no exaggeration to say that.” Caravelle Creative offers a full design package, including website creation, branding, SEO management and small format printing work such as brochures. The installation of the Mimaki JV33 has expanded this portfolio even further, providing a greater large format offering. “We didn’t take on a lot of wide format work before but now with the new JV33-160 we have the confidence to take on new clients,” Ian says. The JV33 runs Mimaki SS21 solvent ink, a friendlier alternative to the Mimaki SS2 ink used in Caravelle Creative’s former JV3. Available in white, clear and metallic options, SS21 is also eligible for the Let’s Do More rebate linked cartridge recycling scheme through Hybrid Services. The Mimaki JV33-160 and its smaller sibling, the JV33-130, is also ideal for the production of outdoor durable work like sports field hoardings – one of the many areas Caravelle Creative has worked in since installing the new machine. The Mimaki JV33-160 and JV33-130 are both part of i-Sub Digital’s Summer Deal. On orders placed on selected Mimaki wide-format printers before September 30th 2013, i-Sub Digital and exclusive UK and Ireland distributor Hybrid Services will offer free delivery, free build, a £200 voucher for machine compatible materials and consumables and a host of other five star freebies, as well as the standard two year Gold Warranty and full software package. Xerox’s iGen 150 Press Converts More Jobs to Digital

XEROX’S newest iGen 150 Press offers a choice of line screens giving printers complete control over image quality so that each piece – regardless of quantity or elements such as photos, text, colours and images – looks consistent. For example, the new 210 line screen heightens the softness in skin tones while keeping the detail

of hair and background images intact – capabilities printers need to capture jobs in the fast growing photo marketplace. A new technology inside the press called Object Oriented Half Toning renders images and text smooth or sharp as required for brochures, catalogues and fliers. “Digital colour image quality is no longer a guessing game with the iGen 150,” said Jeff Jacobson, president, Graphic Communications Operations, Xerox. “We built an ‘intelligent’ press that puts printers in the driver’s seat. They can confidently determine how best to produce each job while moving more offset pages to digital. And we have taken automation to a new level so printers can deliver more sellable prints

Productivity is Black and White with Xerox’s New Light Production Printers

XEROX’S new black and white light production devices are the answer for demanding turnarounds associated with transactional pieces, books and manuals. With Xerox’s D136 Copier/Printer and Printer, users can choose the print speed, server options and finishing capabilities to match their production needs. Designed to fit most print environments, the devices’ expanded media capacity offers more application choices, from window clings and brochures to business cards and magnets. The D136 Copier/Printer can be paired with Xerox EX Server, Powered by Fiery. The EX Server’s spectrophotometer calibrates the printer to ensure smooth, consistent gradient within print runs and across different engines. Xerox’s FreeFlow Print Server is also available on the D136 Printer/Copier and comes standard on the Printer. Running up to 136 pages per minute, jobs move faster with the D136 so larger print runs can be achieved. With oversized and high capacity feeders, the devices can accommodate various paper sizes and custom stock – handling an additional 4,000 sheets for uninterrupted production runs. Printing at 2400 x 2400 dpi, along with Xerox’s EA Toner, means text, photos and graphics are consistently reproduced – with sharp halftones and solid blacks. The toner also produces a less glossy appearance, resulting in a professional matte finish. The devices’ array of finishing options can help pay for print providers make more money while reducing costs for in-plants. For example, printers can select one additional finisher – customising the device to fit their exact needs. They can also expand their range of products with the ability to produce Engineering Z, Tri and Square Fold applications with an in-line finisher. Capturing more book publishing business is in reach with the Xerox Tape Binder, which binds up to 125 sheets of 75 gsm paper. The binder is also compatible with Plockmatic Pro 50/35 Booklet Maker, making saddle stitching and folding fast and easy.

per hour.” New features offer both quality and productivity enhancements With the iGen 150, printers can gain about a 25 percent increase in productivity since less time is spent on reprinting, quality control, job setup and press availability. Options that make this possible include: 2400 x 2400 dpi imaging system delivers more information per square inch – improving details, uniform tints, flesh tones and sharpness. Automated Image-on-Paper technology eliminates manual setups for sheet sizes up to 660 mm – a time saver. IntegratedPLUS Finishing Solution for Booklets removes the complexities of preparing files to finisher specifications. Requirements are set automatically when the job enters the workflow. Single-point Transfer prints 9,000, four over impressions per hour – or 150 prints per minute. Features such as Xerox’s Confident Colour, In-line Spectrophotometer, Auto Density Control and Matte Dry Ink, as well as Standard Gloss Dry Ink, which is now available as an option. www.xerox.com

New Black and White Devices from Xerox

NEW printers from Xerox bring more speed and efficiency to small and medium sized businesses – making it easier to print high quality, professional looking documents anywhere in the building with optional Wi-Fi connectivity. Printing at 45 pages per minute, the black and white Xerox Phaser 3610 Printer and the WorkCentre 3615 Multifunction Printer (MFP) are among the fastest devices in their categories. Both can be equipped with up to three additional 550 sheet paper trays for a total of up to 2,350 sheets to manage heavy workloads and a diverse set of media needs. The devices’ true 1200 x 1200 dpi print resolution enhances sales materials, memos and invoices with sharp image quality. Apple AirPrint, available on both, lets users print email and documents directly from their mobile iOS device when connected to the office network. Both devices work with Xerox’s range of mobile print solutions. A true multi-tasker, the WorkCentre 3615 MFP can programme the next job while others are in progress. For additional convenience, both printers have extra high capacity toner cartridges so less time is spent reloading supplies. Paper, and its related costs, can be reduced with the automatic two sided printing, while the one sided option prints multiple pages on one sheet – a useful option when sharing presentations. Secure Print is a standard feature on both printers to keep confidential documents away from unintended recipients. The devices also use Xerox EA Toner which provides sharper image quality and reduces CO2 emissions during manufacturing by an estimated 28 per cent, compared to conventional toners. October 2013 | QUICK PRINT PRO | SHOWTIME | 17

Chicago Graph Expo Report QPP’s roving reporter from inside the industry visits Print 13 and Complete Package and Converting and finds to his delight lots of good news and signs of great hope for IPEX 2014. Our thanks to Tony Hills at UMG Uchida.

F

OR ANYONE WHO has ever thought about visiting Chicago but never made it, it is without doubt one of the finest cities in the USA — cultured, boasts many high quality restaurants, impeccably clean and architecture that it is actually quite breath taking. It provides a brilliant backdrop to a print show that this year offered great hope to the beleaguered print industry of recent years. The “cornerstone” of the Chicago show this year featured cutting-edge innovations in digital, hybrid and offset print technologies, as well as the complete array of binding and finishing equipment and supplies. Most manufacturers showed some exciting new pipeline products that will further enhance the digital print arena — highlighting just where the future of print lays. From the new Konica Minolta-Komori partnership KM1 hybrid inkjet press and Canon DreamLabo 5000 (at something over $500,000) to the $2,500 3D printer there was interest to fit every printer’s pocket. IPEX 2014 should give UK printers a real chance to move their businesses forward with improved quality, reduced costs and much improved workflows. Here is a brief selection of what was on show and could be coming to IPEX2014… Riso showed an interesting new combination of low cost colour printers that combined with either a perfect binder (including a cover sheet feeder) or an even more impressive solution which printed not only the letter to be inserted but the envelope too and then actually inserted the letter at the same time ready for posting. The Canon DreamLabo 5000 showed brilliant quality when printing photobooks etc. and has the ability to work on various paper stocks with no variance in quality. This printer had to go down as the ‘best looker’ in the show — photos don’t do it justice — a real F1 appearance. UCHIDA continued their rise in the post press market for cutter creasers showing off the latest AeroCut Quatro. Their North American distributor was happily kept busy taking many orders. The Uchida Quatro Cutter/Creaser/ Perforator being shown connected to Microsoft InDesign for the first time. So front end printing to back end finished production can all be produced straight from the design package to the finished product — easy, entry level pricing to automate workflow for every Inplant and SME Printer. Also shown for the first time anywhere was the New UCHIDA Countron AT Paper Counter. Linked to computer for printers who produce high quantities of sets that are not tabbed at the press end, this counter solves a real workflow issue by tabbing (random if needed ) sets just as they are needed to go for onward finishing such as binding. The New KM1 was probably the most viewed demonstration of the week

...although seemingly not yet for sale. Combining the paper feeding skills of Komori with the high quality ink jet technology of Konica could this process be the shape of things to come for the bigger sheet size digital engines? It’s assumed given the crowd’s reaction and apparent feedback that this machine may well make IPEX 2014 but those decisions are still to be made as far as we aware when going to press. Morgana were showing a revolutionary new Air Assisted Feeder (AFF602) to link to their CST and System 2000(S) booklet making systems. Its capacity and flexibility was very impressive, as was the full bleed square folded book at the delivery end of the system. With pre-collated sets of book pages stacked in one tray up to 600 mm high and coated/laminated covers in the other it was noticeable how well it fed and how easy it was to load each deep drawer. It certainly seemed robust. It is understood this system will be available in the UK in the near future and should certainly cause a bit of a stir against the current crop of older systems for dealing with this type of production. Keep a look out for the UK launch. Certainly for interest in a whole new sphere — the BL 3D printer really caught the imagination — even after viewing it this reporter still couldn’t believe what he’d seen! It will take some time to understand how this technology will fit into our industry — but it will certainly trigger a lot of questions — especially with an entry level cost of just $2500 dollars. It takes a long time to make anything but for prototype/marketing pieces it could be absolutely fantastic… I want one just for exploring the possibilities in my workshop! One new way to catch attention to a stand was used by the company Transformation. 8-9 ft. high this humanoid certainly captured attention all over the show floor... the poor guy inside on stilts and talking through a transformer speech machine must have been exhausted... Interestingly though, he seemed to be attracting a lot of the ladies... now who knows anything about females fantasies...? 17

monochrome production printing system. Quality output is based on a number of outstanding technological features including genuine resolution of 1,200 by 1,200 dpi; precision LED exposure; and a unique screening technology. The ineo 951 is flexible enough to handle just about any job a printshop will face. A substrate weight range from just 40gsm to an impressive 350gsm means that the ineo 951 can cope with a wide variety of mono production work. With a maximum paper capacity of 9,000 sheets in five cassettes, the ineo 951 is well equipped for any high-volume job, and even high-volume mix-media jobs can be handled with ease. The system comes with a paper catalogue that stores frequently used media, saving a lot of time in handling repeat jobs from regular customers.

ineo 1052 With a maximum A4 output of 6,300 impressions an hour, the ineo 1052 is an excellent choice for average monthly print volumes of between 300,000 and 500,000 printouts and peak volumes up to two million prints per month. The ineo 1052 offers high media flexibility including the option to print on paper weights from 40 to 350 gsm in single-sided printing and on paper of up to 300gsm for duplex prints. To provide high quality print output the ineo 1052 has a print resolution of 1,200 by 1,200dpi. ineo 1250 The ineo 1250 can generate 7,500 A4 impressions per hour on substrates up to 350gsm card. DEVELOP COLOUR PRODUCTION SYSTEMS

INEO+ 8000

ineo+ 6000L The ineo+ 6000L’s compact size is a remarkable achievement for a device in this class, and a real bonus for any copy shop with limited space. Although smaller in size, the ineo+ 6000L still delivers much of the production print functionality offered by Develop’s bigger systems. Print speed is a respectable 60 pages per minute in both mono and colour, printing onto weights of up to 300gsm, with a print resolution of 1,200 by 1,200 dpi. 22 | DIGITAL IMAGING | QUICK PRINT PRO | October 2013

I am a Camera Martin Christie left last month’s piece on flatbed scanning with a mention of the camera, and the alternative of using digital photography to capture original artwork, three dimensional items and anything else too big, too delicate or just too awkward to be thrown at conventional scanners.

F

OR MANY OF these items there is simply no alternative, and there never has been. Previously it would have been the job of a specialist photographer — one who had both the equipment and the knowledge to tackle such jobs, not your average high street baby snapper. So that would have been expensive, and taken time: a medium format camera shooting a maximum twelve shot transparency film, studio lighting, processing costs. Two working days minimum even for a rush job at premium rates. Most likely a week, and still a bill with three digits in it. Of course, these days the iPhone generation would find such figures and time scale incomprehensible when they can send an instant image around the world in a second. That’s why they still need to consult the advice of the print shop to bridge the knowledge gap between turning pixels into hard paper. And that need is actually increasing as more people are empowered by convenience technology to produce things that may eventually have to be printed. Previously, even a laptop required some understanding to operate it. Current tablets allow the user to float through cyber world blissfully unaware of the mechanics of their actions. When they have to turn it into something real, reality checks in. With ultra-high resolution screens, everything looks good on a tablet. How it will look in ink or toner is the real test. Digital photography is where I started with this column, and the print industry, having previously only been a conventional photographer and a mere bystander over the process of turning my film efforts into hard copy. Since then the darkroom has been consigned to a museum piece, the repro-boys have been made redundant, and I’ve had to learn a whole new bunch of skills. Now I am the shooter, the processor and the printer, and as such I have been able to better understand the complexities involved in the complete operation. Digital has made photography easier, but good photography is still a skill. Competent photography is not a black art however, and should not be beyond the skills of someone already working in the digital print environment and used to working with customers images and Photoshop, or equivalent editing software. All that is required is an interest to develop new skills, and an investment in a certain amount of kit which in the scale of

things isn’t going to break the bank. Obviously the first thing you need is a good camera. It doesn’t have to be a top of the range full-frame DSLR but it does have to be good enough to wave under a customer’s nose when comparing it with the miniscule lens on their phone. It does need to be able to set a custom white balance, and shoot in RAW, that is an unprocessed mode, unlike the normal compressed JPEG. That is actually more important than the total pixel count. Anything above 12 megapixels should produce reasonable results – the equivalent of an A3 sized image at 300ppi in real terms. That’s as long as you can save it, not as a compressed JPEG, but as a 16 bit full size full colour TIFF (Tagged Image File Format). Then you have something meaty you can work with. This is very important to understand, and to explain to customers, because they may have a very good camera, but if they don’t know how to use it the results may be disappointing when committed to print. They will always look good on the screen, but print resolution requires many times more information to provide accurate results, as well as making any colour or sharpness adjustments more difficult. When a customer provides you with an image as a JPEG you must appreciate that it has already been processed by the camera, and then possibly further by the customer in Photoshop or anything else, based on how it looks on their screen, almost certainly uncalibrated, and in unknown lighting conditions. It’s amazing the colours are even near what they should be, let alone a complete match. In the old days, with hard copy, you had a reference because you had the original and could punch in a little density or colour if required, to match up. With a digital file you have no reference unless you originate it yourself, because it is not your printer but the content of the original file that is beyond your control. So the logic of shooting your own images in control conditions begins to make more and more sense rather than wasting a lot of time trying to correct problems in files provided by customers. This is not for those personal choices that just have to be great shots regardless of quality, but for those that want to be fussy over colour and detail. For them, and more importantly for you, here is a very simplistic guide to product photography. Bear with me those who do already, but pay attention those who have never even thought about it. It’s not rocket science. It has to be said first that every item is likely to have its own individual issues, but frankly that is no different from any other job. Assessing the size and complexity of a task is a daily chore, and at least now we can network with others who have had a similar challenge. The one important thing to understand is not the digital camera, but something we are so familiar with we take no notice of it – light. It is all around us, it changes from second to second, but we take no notice because our eyes and brains adjust to the changes as we move from daylight into artificial light and even view things that are highly reflective. A camera can’t do that. It has a split second to decide what the view should look like. If you leave a digital camera on automatic mode it will decide for itself on a pre-programmed pattern and search for blue sky and green grass.

That’s why a black cat on a white background will cause it to panic and give you blue snow, or a grey cat. That’s why you need to override the standard camera settings and set some custom ones. Better still if you can fine tune the custom settings, taking out a bit of red or adding a bit of blue. It may seem complicated but a few moments in shooting can save a lot of time later. Accurate colour capture makes accurate colour printing. Additive colour (RGB) which the camera sees produces much more options than subtractive (CMYK) print so it makes sense to adjust colour at source. Manual white balance is generally set by shooting at a target white or grey card, with instructions listed in the camera’s capture menu. Alternatively, or additionally, you can use a simple Kodak colour chart for reference. The white balance is important because it depends upon the light source used to illuminate the subject. If you are not able to use natural light – diffused daylight rather than bright sunlight – then the choice is either continuous blub or flash. Continuous lighting has the advantage that you can see what you are shooting before you press the shutter and watch for flare and shadows that may be caused by the direction of light. The classic photography light set up is two lights set at 45 degrees either side of, and slightly above the camera, but you can move the lights around, or the subject if this causes highlights on reflective surfaces. Matt surfaces are usually easy, shiny black things with lots of lumps are probably the worst. In the photo I am using two 5500K daylight bulbs of 115watt which are equivalent to about 400w each in old incandescent terms. Better to use daylight balanced bulbs, they are not expensive now and give more accurate colour. Tungsten bulbs will have a yellow hue, fluorescent tubes a slightly green one. Reflective umbrellas help to diffuse the powerful light and spread it evenly on the subject, and the height of the lights can be adjusted on the stands to suit the size and shape of the subject. Light and distance are closely related. You have exposure settings of shutter speed and lens aperture on the

v i v i d.

camera, but where you position the lights is equally important. You need to get the lights as close as possible to the subject to illuminate detail, but not so close it bleaches out surfaces or produces harsh shadows. As you move the lights away, light will fall softer on the subject, but you may have to slow shutter speed, and open lens aperture to compensate, and risk losing some quality. It’s a bit of trial and error. Similarly you need to get the camera as close as possible to the subject to fill the frame. A tripod, or a simple sturdy stand is recommended to mount the camera as even the slightest camera movement can cause lack of sharpness in the picture. Having your hands free also helps arranging the subject and lighting without having to pick it up and finding some safe to put it down! That can be an issue if you are working in a busy environment with limited space like a copy shop. I’ve set up our sample studio in just a few square feet of available floor space between desks and copiers to show how simply it can be done. Two stands and a cross beam support a roll of background paper which is draped across a table to support the subject and place it at a convenient working height. In this case I am using graduated photographic paper for an artistic effect behind the object, but ordinary white paper from a large format or plan printer will do. In fact if you have a large format printer you can create your own! As an alternative to white, grey or indeed black can work well as a background as stray shadows may be hidden, and cutting out unwanted surrounds may be easier. An alternative to continuous lighting is to use flash, and this is where it gets a bit more sophisticated. The easiest is to use battery powered off camera units or speed lights. These can be quite powerful and give out a good amount of intense light at short distance. They may need an external trigger or remote to synchronise the camera and flash operation, or a sensor that can be triggered by the camera’s on board flash. Either way a bit of playing around with settings will be needed but as you can see the results in the view screen, you can soon find out what you are doing wrong! With a bit of shopping around between eBay and regular trade suppliers you should be able to set up a useful studio as illustrated for around £500 including the camera. Not a lot for an extra string to the print shop services. Most of the accessories can be bought from our regular advertiser Photomart. Crush for the new look of I Coloniali THE new style for I Coloniali adds a touch of magic to our daily lives through new graphics, new colours, new shapes, and more! In total respect for the environment, the products’ secondary packaging also features new materials in the form of the new ecological paper, Crush, which is manufactured using 15% agro-industrial by-products and 30% post-consumption recycled paper in place of virgin cellulose of tree origin. Crush is the innovative paper patented by Favini which uses the waste products of citrus fruits, kiwi fruit, corn, coffee beans, olives, hazelnuts and almonds as noble raw material. Crush is FSC certified, contains no GMOs, and is produced using 100% self-produced green energy for a total carbon footprint of

just 20%. Valeria Scognamiglio, International Brand Manager for I Coloniali through Perfume Holding, said, “I Coloniali has always placed a great deal of emphasis on sustainability, preferring packaging solutions that have a high impact visually, but which are also recyclable and reusable. We’ve selected Favini’s Crush paper because we feel it is a truly innovative product thanks to its ability to unite high levels of recycled materials with a luxurious look and feel, all of which is perfectly in line with the I Coloniali philosophy.” Andrea Nappa, Favini managing director and a partner in Orlando Italy, asserted, “At just a few months since the launch of Crush, we are proud to be so well received and to establish partnerships with brands

such as I Coloniali, which, like us, focus on innovation and total respect for the environment. With Crush, we have revolutionised the more traditional approach and have given new life to agro-industrial byproducts by providing an alternative use for this waste and raising it

to the level of more noble raw materials. The result that we have managed to achieve is a paper that ensures excellent print performance and enables those who choose it to communicate a strong image based on the values in which they believe.” www.favini.com

QPS BioMedia same price as non-recyclable QUALITY Print Services (QPS) has added Ilford BioMedia to its portfolio at the same price point as comparable products, proving that print service providers can offer more environmentally friendly output at competitive prices. This means that interior designers, architects, retailers and exhibition businesses can deliver an entirely sustainable brand vision without incurring extra expense or compromising on quality when it comes to graphics. Ilford BioMedia is both fully recyclable and can be incinerated for energy production without the release of any harmful gases or chemicals, meaning brand owners can also save money by avoiding landfill fees — currently £64 per tonne. If landfill is the preferred waste management method for used graphics, environmentally conscious businesses can be safe in the knowledge that BioMedia is completely biodegradable, thanks to a unique enzyme that accelerates breakdown under

anaerobic landfill conditions. SGIA Product of the Year 2011 winner BioMedia is suitable for display projects traditionally catered for by PVC or polyester laminates, including indoor and outdoor poster displays, exhibition graphics, pop-ups and banners “The price of BioMedia shows that there is no commercial disadvantage with specifying the more environmentally responsible option,” comments Chris Bailey, Director, QPS. “Print buyers and specifiers who are working to achieve ISO 14001 certification will also find that using recyclable and biodegradable media such as BioMedia will help their application.” The range from QPS includes BioMedia Display Film in matt finish and compatible with aqueous, solvent, eco-solvent and latex ink technology, UVprinter compatible BioMedia Display Film UV in matt finish, BioMedia Rigid Board, an ultra smooth direct to print board suitable for all UV platforms, and BioMedia Laminate, a satin finish alternative to traditional polyester laminates. BioMedia products are available in a selection of thicknesses and/or widths. In conjunction with the BioMedia offer, QPS is also able to offer a cartridge recycling scheme for used Nazdar ink cartridges, enabling print businesses to provide an end-to-end eco-conscious service. Epson Enters Direct To Garment T-Shirt Printing Market

EPSON has added to its textile printer line up with its first direct to garment t-shirt printer, the SureColor SC-F2000. With the garment printing market expected to be worth over €200 million by 2014, small to medium businesses can benefit from the SureColor SC-F2000’s revenue generating features. Combined with high performance, low maintenance and running costs, it enables businesses to offer a new t-shirt design and print service. Online t-shirt shops, production t-shirt printers and even corporate users will benefit from the

SC-F2000, as its ink is crack resistant and is soft against skin. Users can configure the system to suit their needs by choosing from two sets of CMYK ink for white garments or CMYK with up to four white inks for coloured garments. Garment Creator software by Epson is bundled with the package, which includes a cost calculation function, allowing you to estimate the print cost by calculating the amount and cost of the ink used for each print job. This can be beneficial if you want to set a tax rate or discount. This design software enables designers to unleash their creativity and easily produce customised, eye catching designs on t-shirts, caps and bags up to 25mm thick. Martin Johns, market development manager, Epson UK, says: “Unique to this industry, this is the first system where a print head, ink and chassis have been designed and manufactured by a single brand. The hardware and ink are designed to work together and users benefit from the reliability and high quality output that Epson is renowned for.” “As well as enjoying the new revenue stream, they can be assured that Epson has applied

its years of print knowledge and know how to deliver an eco-friendly device that excels in performance and delivers low running costs.” Featuring Epson’s durable TFP print head, the SC-F2000 is capable of printing a single white t-shirt in 27 seconds when using dual colour mode and a dark coloured t-shirt in 111 seconds, using white and colour ink, so production is quick without sacrificing print quality. When used in conjunction with Epson’s UltraChrome DG Ink (available in 250 or 600ml cartridges), the SureColor SC-F2000 excels on dark fabric, because its white ink is tough. The white ink is circulated within the system and has been designed to reduce clogging, which increases productivity, allowing deadlines to be met consistently. The SC-F2000 offers a resolution of up to 1440x1440dpi for accurate dot shape and placement, while its wide colour gamut produces vibrant colours, sharp contours and smooth gradations. Despite its ability to create a lasting visual impact, Epson’s UltraChrome DG ink is kind to those it comes into contact with. The ecofriendly ink has been awarded a part certification from Oeko-Tex® Standard 1001, which means it doesn’t contain any harmful substrates. The SureColor SC-F2000 is available from November 2013, priced from RRP €20,838.03 www.epson.co.uk

Ever wondered where all your print goes? Part Two

UNLESS you plan to waste time and money stuffing your beautifully printed envelopes by hand, you will also need to acquire a folderinserter. No prizes for guessing what a folder-inserter does, though you might be surprised by the sophistication of modern devices and the impact that they can have on your service proposition. Today, even low end models will enable a small copy shop to provide mailing fulfilment services in addition to print. Folder-inserters do exactly what their name suggests: they fold letters, insert them into envelopes and seal the envelopes ready for despatch. If necessary, they can be linked to a franking machine so that mailings can also be franked in a single uninterrupted process. You could do this by hand, of course, and many

companies still do, but manually folding and inserting a letter takes much longer and the result can look scruffy and unprofessional next to the crisp folds and perfectly positioned address of a machine folded letter. Stuffing envelopes by hand also incurs significant labour costs. On the basis that a small desktop folder-inserter with a monthly rental of £20 can fold and insert letters at speeds of 1,350 items per hour, Neopost has calculated that a company sending 3,000 items a month could save £1,920 a year in labour costs alone*. Businesses that use a machine to deliver complex, fully personalised mailings can expect to achieve even greater savings, especially when sending multiple items, such as business reply envelopes, leaflets and postcards. The number of sheets and additional items that can be enclosed in an envelope depends on how many feed stations the folder-inserter has. An entry level desktop model like the Neopost DS-35 has two sheet feeders and an additional feeder for an insert such as a business reply envelope; a high end production machine like the DS-1200, which can fill 12,000 envelopes per hour, can be fitted with as many as 16 feeders accommodating everything from A6 cards to booklets and CDs. Choosing a model with a generous number of feed stations lets you take advantage of another key feature of folder-inserters – the ability to adjust mailings on the fly and vary inserts

according to each addressee’s individual needs and interests. Instead of sending the same material to everyone, this allows your customers to create fully personalised mailings that generate higher response levels. To deliver this level of sophistication, you will need to invest in Neopost OMS-100 or Print Machine output management software that can add optical marks or barcodes to documents as they are printed. These marks tell a folder-inserter fitted with an optional OMR reader what inserts to include with each letter making it possible to change selections on the fly. Another useful add on for Neopost folderinserters, Mail Piece Production Control, adds a machine readable ID to each letter’s address block and validates that the right inserts have been sent with each letter. If there is a mis-match, the folder-inserter stops automatically so that the discrepancy can be corrected. Too often, copy shops end up sending completed print jobs to a mailing house for fulfilment. By investing in modern mailing equipment like a Neopost folder-inserter, you will be able to keep this business for yourself and fulfil every aspect of your customers’ mailings in-house. * Worked out on the basis that a typical worker can manually fold and insert 100 letters an hour at a cost of more than 6p per item (100 items per hour @ £6.19 per hour). www.neopost.co.uk/csn

SALES TRAINING Three copier salesmen were busy discussing a new sales tactic on the platform, while waiting for the train. The announcement was made, and the train finally arrived. There was complete panic among eagerly waiting passengers as the train made its way to the platform. Passengers rushed inside the train, and the train left. However, one of the salesmen was not able to catch the train in the confusion. A passer by who saw all this came up to the salesman and told him not to worry and catch the next available train. The salesman replied, “I am not worried for myself, but the real problem is that I was the one who was supposed to catch the train, and the two of them who went on the train, actually came to see me off”.

LIFE CHOICES A woman walked up to a little old man rocking in a chair in his garden. “I couldn’t help noticing how happy you look,” she said. “What’s your secret for a long happy life?” “I smoke three packs of cigarettes a day,” he said. “I also drink a case of whisky a week, eat fatty foods, and never exercise.” “That’s amazing,” said the woman, “how old are you?” “Twenty-six,” he said.

POLITICAL PUN There was some upset at Margaret Thatcher’s funeral when the decorations were being prepared. More specifically over the drawing pins used to put them up. The upset was caused because a cheap Polish imported brand was used; people said the organisers should have supported British businesses. Apparently some people were so upset they threatened to go on hunger strike. I thought we’d seen the end of the Pole Tacks Diets.

DOCTOR VS SOLICITOR At a party of professionals, a doctor was having difficulty socialising. Everyone wanted to describe their symptoms, and get an opinion about diagnosis. The doctor turned to a solicitor acquaintance, and asked, “How do you handle people who want advice outside of the office?” “Simple,” answered the solicitor, “I send them a bill. That stops it.” The next day, the doctor, still feeling a bit reserved about what he had just finished doing, opened his mailbox to send the bills; there sat a bill from the solicitor.

NURSERY PIG One day a nursery teacher was reading the story of the Three Little Pigs to her class. She came to the part of the story where the first pig was trying to accumulate the building materials for his home. She read, ‘...And so the pig went up to the man with the wheelbarrow full of straw and said, ‘Pardon me sir, but may I have some of that straw to build my house?’’ The teacher paused then asked the class, ‘And what do you think that man said?’ One little boy raised his hand and said, ‘I think he said ‘’Get out of here…A talking pig!’’

SIZE MATTERS Right, there were these three brothers, Tom, Harry, and Dick. They all had big feet. Tom size 12, Harry size 14, and Dick’s were the biggest at a massive size 18. They were in a pub one day when Dick said ‘I’m going to the toilet’ and off he went. Tom and Harry, standing at the bar, were joined by two attractive ladies. One of the ladies said ‘we can’t help noticing, but you both have incredibly large feet’. Harry said ‘you think these are big. You should see the size of our Dick’s’

I SHALL TELL YOU THIS ONLY ONCE… When Charles deGaulle decided to retire from public life, the British ambassador and his wife threw a gala dinner party in his honour. At the dinner table the Ambassador’s wife was talking with Madame deGaulle. ‘Your husband has been such a prominent public figure, such a presence on the French and International scene for so many years! How quiet retirement will seem in comparison. What are you most looking forward to in these retirement years?’ ‘A penis,’ replied Madame deGaulle. A huge hush fell over the table. Everyone heard her answer... and no one knew what to say next. Le Grand Charles leaned over to his wife and said, ‘Mon Cherie, I believe ze English pronounce zat word, ‘appiness!’’

TABLE FOR TWO Did you hear about the restaurant on the Moon? Great food but no Atmosphere. Did you know I’m starting a job in that restaurant tomorrow, I can’t wait.

DON’T MESS WITH A LADY Phoebe walked up to the bar and ordered a dry white wine. As soon as she had taken her first sip of her wine she was distressed to see a drunken, unkempt man sit down next to her. ‘Say, bitch...I’d really like to’get into those pants of yours.’ Looking nonchalantly over her shoulder at him, she replied, ‘Thanks, but I’ve already got one asshole in there.’

RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY An elderly couple is beginning to notice that neither of them seem to be able to remember things as well as they used to. So, they go to see their doctor, who explains that there is nothing really wrong with them, just typical memory loss associated with old age. He suggests that they each get notebooks and write notes to themselves to help remember things. The couple goes home and that evening while watching T.V. the man gets up and heads for the kitchen. His wife asks if he can bring her some ice cream when he returns. He says he will, and she says he should write it down. “I’m just going to the kitchen, I’ll remember.” “Well, I want that with nuts, too.” “O.K. he says ice cream with nuts.” She asks again if he’s going to write it down. “No, I’m just going to the kitchen.” “And a cherry on the top?” He agrees and turns toward the kitchen again and she asks again about writing it down. Now the old man is angry, “Look, old lady I’m not senile, I can remember ice cream with nuts and a cherry on top.” He goes in the kitchen for 10 minutes and when he returns he sets a plate of bacon and eggs in front of his wife. She looks up and says, “Honey, you forgot my toast.”

THREE WISHES There were three friends stranded on an island. A printer, a designer and a salesman. Exploring the island, the printer found a bottle so they opened it. A genie came out, and she said that she would grant them three wishes. The printer said, “I wish I was with my family” then poof he was with his family. The designer said “I wish I was in a bar with my friends” then poof he was gone. The salesman, was feeling bad and the genie asked, “What’s wrong?” The man said, I’m lonely I wish my friends were here. Poof, his two friends were back on the island.

EMBARRASSING MOMENTS – MISCELLANEOUS CONFESSIONS I was at the golf store comparing different kinds of golf balls. I was unhappy with the women’s type I had been using. After browsing for several minutes, I was approached by one of the good-looking gentlemen who works at the store. He asked if he could help me. Without thinking, I looked at him and said, ‘I think I like playing with men’s balls.’ I was standing at the checkout with my two-year-old son, and there was a heavyset girl in line ahead of us. As the cashier scanned the lady’s items, the bar-code reader gave off a continuous beeping sound. All of a sudden, my son said loudly, ‘Mummy, watch out! She’s going to reverse! My sister and I were at the shops and passed by a store that sold a variety of nuts. As we were looking at the display case, the boy behind the counter asked if we needed any help. I replied, ‘No, I’m just looking at your nuts. My husband and I took our three kids out shoe shopping one day. We were going from store to store, and the kids were getting restless. At one crowded store, I was standing near a bench when my 3-year-old climbed up on it, grabbed hold of my elastic waist shorts, and jumped off pulling both my shorts and my underwear to the floor. I once walked into a hair salon with my husband and three kids in tow and asked loudly, ‘How much do you charge for a shampoo and a blow job?’’

FINAL CLOSE A man visiting a graveyard saw a tombstone that read: “Here lies John Smith, a salesman and an honest man.” “How about that!” he exclaimed. “They’ve got three people buried in one grave.”

WHAT IS CELIBACY? Celibacy can be a choice in life or a condition imposed by circumstances. While attending a Marriage Weekend, my wife and I, listened to the instructor declare, ‘It is essential that husbands and wives know the things that are important to each other’ He then addressed the men, ‘Can you name and describe your wife’s favourite flower?’ I leaned over, touched my wife’s hand gently, And whispered, ‘Selfraising, isn’t it?’ And thus began my life of celibacy...

IMAGE RECOGNITION There was a man sitting at a bar, and he looks over at the gentleman sitting next to him and says, “Hey, you look familiar. Are you from around here?” The man answers, “Yeah, I live down the street.” “No kidding?” says the first man, “Well, so do I. And hey, you look about my age. Where did you go to school?” “Oh I went to Francis Lewis in the high street. How ‘bout you?” “Get out. I went to Francis Lewis. “Where’d you go to college?” “City College, Brighton “No way! I went to City College Brighton too. What year?” “1993.” “1993 You’re not going to believe this…” Joe the barman walks over, and the first guy says, “Joe, you won’t believe it in a million years. This guy went to the same school as me, and went to the same college. We were even in the same year. Isn’t that amazing?” Joe looks at them both and says, “Yeah, that’s just plain amazing.” A third man comes in and says, “Hey Joe. What’s new?” Joe says, “Not much. The Johnson twins are drunk again.”

BRIEF ENCOUNTER A man and a woman who have never met before find themselves in the same sleeping carriage of a train. After the initial embarrassment, they both manage to get to sleep; the woman on the top bunk, the man on the lower. In the middle of the night the woman leans over and says, “I’m sorry to bother you, but I’m awfully cold and I was wondering if you could possibly pass me another blanket.” The man leans out and with a glint in his eye said “I’ve got a better idea ... let’s pretend we’re married.” “Why not,” giggles the woman. “Good,” he replies. “Get your own blanket.”

A man placed an ad in the classifieds.

PERFECT BINDING A shy man was feeling a little lucky and decided to ask the subdued provocative Librarian about seduction as he tended to be oblique in his intentions. “Do you have any books on women seducing men?’’ The Librarian answered without hesitation ‘’ Why yes” she murmured. EDUCATED THROUGH WATCHING MOVIES • During all police investigations it will be necessary to visit a strip club at least once. • Most dogs are immortal. • If being chased through town, you can usually take cover in a passing St. Patrick’s Day parade — at any time of the year. • All grocery shopping bags contain at least one stick of French Bread. • It’s easy for anyone to land a plane providing there is someone in the control tower to talk you down. • The ventilation system of any building is the perfect hiding place. No-one will ever think of looking for you in there and you can travel to any other part of the building you want without difficulty. • If your town is threatened by an imminent natural disaster or killer beast, the mayor’s first concern will be the tourist trade or his forthcoming art exhibition. • The Eiffel Tower can be seen from any window in Paris.

They all said the same: “You can have mine.”
