I love October. After a quick re-charge at a quiet beach bar I am raring to market our quick print business from here on in until the New Year. Never too early to use the C word as Christmas does come early to all of our 6600 print businesses across the UK. We should all be hard at it now promoting seasonal print cards, calendars and gifts. Have you published your Christmas opening hours yet? October is also the month to start training for your Christmas drinking and next to Heidelberg, the Octoberfest beer carnivals must be the best ever German import aimed specifically at hard working printers. In case the typeface of the Octoberprintfest heading above has got you designers guessing, try Lucida Blackletter and organise some promotions for your customers to raise their spirits, as the weather gets ready for bonfire night. Perfect Colours ‘Small but Mighty’ campaign PERFECT Colours has launched an inventive new campaign to demonstrate how, with the HP Latex L310, even the smallest sign and display producers can augment their businesses without draining their coffers. Launching today, the initiative beckons companies in the sector to test-drive the L310, and experience first-hand the creative and economic potential of this ‘Small But Mighty’ engine. The campaign will show that size does not determine strength, comparing the Latex L310 with smaller creatures from the animal kingdom which nevertheless exhibit exceptional abilities. The L310’s throughput makes it industrious like the ant, while its output is durable and versatile, like the rhinoceros beetle; it can enable smaller businesses to pack a powerful punch, like the pistol shrimp, and speed away successfully with sizeable jobs, like the eagle. To provide a living
example of this, James Deacon, the one-man sign-making force behind Bigger Stickers, will document his experience with the Latex L310 in a candid blog, Walking On The Wild Side. “Our industry is packed with smaller but highly creative businesses who are producing astounding graphics for an array of clients, including major brands and retailers,” comments Jon Telling, sales director at Perfect Colours. “At Perfect Colours, we recognise that having the right machine is paramount in delivering that work. Small But Mighty was invented to show that the LX310 can help them do just that — and that a little can, indeed, go a very long way. “The HP Latex L310 is a formidable machine; it has the potential to elevate your business without doing too much damage to the financials,” Telling continues. “But we don’t want our customers to take our word for it: we want them to experience
it for themselves.” At just £10,000, the HP Latex L310 won’t break the bank, combining as it does power efficiency, minimal maintenance and the eco-consciousness for which the range is renowned. With a small footprint and front-loading facility, the 1.2m machine caters to businesses with limited floorspace, while also providing exceptionally low energy consumption, running off two traditional three-pin plugs and going from power-up to production readiness in only two minutes. Supplied with the easy-to-use SAI FlexiPrint RIP and offering simplified colour management, the L310 reliably delivers a top print speed of 48sq m/ hour, or 1,200dpi output in quality mode. Customers are invited to engage with the campaign through the website — www. smallbutmighty.co.uk and to apply for a free two-week trial period with the HP Latex L310.
EPSON ‘United For Unicef’ Anniversary THE Manchester United Foundation’s ‘United for UNICEF’ partnership has launched a new fundraising drive with the support of Epson Europe. Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium was the venue for an exclusive “for-one-day-only” photography exhibition celebrating 15 years of United for UNICEF. To mark the occasion, Sir Alex Ferguson unveiled his personal selection of 15 photographs highlighting memorable events during the partnership’s 15 years. A selection of these images — signed by Sir Alex after being printed on an Epson Stylus Pro 9900 large-format printer — are now being auctioned online to raise money for United for UNICEF’s programme supporting vulnerable children in Vietnam. The 508 mm x 768 mm images, printed on 300 gsm media, can be viewed and bid for at www.united4unicef.org. United for UNICEF started in 1999 and is the longest-running partnership of its kind between a sporting organisation and a global children’s organisation. To date it has raised over £3 million and protected over 3.4 million children worldwide from violence, abuse and exploitation. All the money raised by auctioning Sir Alex’s chosen images will be invested in Vietnam, where more than four million children are estimated to be at risk, living on the streets, working in hazardous conditions, or in conflict with the law. “We are proud to have been asked to help promote such a great cause,” says
Mary McNulty, Epson Europe, “and we hope that the excellent print quality achievable with the Stylus Pro 9900 will add real value to what is a uniquely exclusive limited edition.” www.epson.co.uk
The Tetenal European Classics Award “BLOW a little life back into your darkroom and present us your masterpiece!” Tetenal is searching for the European Champion of analogue black and white photography. Whether portrait, people, landscape, architecture or wildlife — the objective is to find the best analogue photo. The best five photos from each country will first be selected from five categories. These will then progress into the overall European judging round. Finally, a winner will be chosen from each category, but there will be only one overall European Champion. Prizes totalling over €5,000 await the entrants. The top prize, sponsored by Tetenal, is a weekend for two in Hamburg. “Over the course of this year, when we are celebrating 175 years of the photography industry — and can also look back as a company on 167 years of Tetenal, we feel almost obliged to honour analogue photography by holding a European photography competition,” comments Petra Roll, Tetenal’s Corporate Communication Manager. “We want to see what can still be produced in darkrooms today and are really excited to receive the entries.” Further information, together with the terms and conditions for participation, can be found at since1847.tetenal.com

Mimaki joins Caterham F1 Team MIMAKI has formed an exciting new technical partnership with the Caterham F1 Team, making Mimaki the team’s official technical graphics supplier. The result of this partnership is that all Formula One communication, vehicle graphics and visuals for the Caterham F1 Team will be now be printed and cut with Mimaki’s range of solutions. In the fast paced world of Formula One racing, teams need graphics that stand out from the rest of the field and give them a commercial and competitive edge and Manfredi Ravetto, Team Principal of the Caterham F1 Team, knows all about standing out. His appointment at Caterham is aimed at driving the team towards greater success and he acknowledges the need for a partner capable of translating the team’s core values into visuals that reflect these goals. “Whether it is on the track or projecting our image across various media, our team is focused on results. That is why we required a technical partner that could deliver quality that matches our high engineering standards. Mimaki impressed us with the creative versatility their solutions have to offer and won us over immediately.”
Mike Horsten, General Manager Marketing EMEA for Mimaki Europe, is very enthusiastic about the new partnership: “Formula One is all about precision, flexibility, quality and success; characteristics we also associate with every print and cut solution Mimaki develops and puts into the market. This close cooperation allows us to demonstrate the sheer breadth of what Mimaki can deliver. Our solutions are as flexible, creative and qualitative as a highly demanding race team management requires them to be. We consider it an honour and a privilege to supply the team with the latest printing and cutting solutions, the results of which will be highly visible in the pits and paddock areas of race tracks around the world.” The Caterham F1 Graphics Team concurs on the importance of visual presentation throughout the racing season: “Our team is under a lot of time pressure - and so are our communication efforts. We need to effectively translate the key values of Caterham F1 Team into a visual representation that is all about speed, outstanding performance, flexibility and quality. To achieve that success, we selected a reliable partner we can count on
for quality and consistency. We’re convinced this partnership with Mimaki will deliver the right solutions for the job.” John de la Roche, national sales manager — sign and graphics at Mimaki’s UK and Irish distributors, Hybrid Services, echoed these sentiments; “We’re are delighted to have this fantastic opportunity to work with the Caterham F1 Team and to help them to maximise the benefits of the Mimaki equipment in support of their sporting and commercial objectives” Mimaki is exclusively distributed in the UK and Ireland by Hybrid Services Ltd and full details of the entire product range can be found atwww.hybridservices.co.uk
Brillant vehicle wrap speeds into pole position
WHEN the motor-sport division of construction and refurbishment specialists Barley McNaughton were looking to rebrand its new race car trailer, brand and design experts Brilliant Media turned to Orajet, supplied by Antalis, to transform a plain, full sized articulated lorry into one of the most talked about transporters on the racing circuit. For the full service cross media production company, the opportunity to start with a totally blank canvas gave the design and branding team at Brilliant Media the chance to put their flair for innovation and creativity in to action. “Then came the bombshell,” explained Tony Kenton, Branding and marketing director at Brilliant Media. “Our client needed the lorry finished, roadworthy and ready to go in just two weeks as they were heading to Spa in Belgium for their next race!” The challenge not only included an extremely tight deadline, the design team also had to create a strikingly different brand for Barley McNaughton’s motor sport division, reflect an element of its classic racing history, while still remaining true to the values of its core business. “We knew we had to include both the brand and the cars in some way; then we had a brilliant idea!” enthused Kenton. The Brilliant team created an architectural line illustration as a backdrop along the entire length and back of the lorry to highlight the company’s construction heritage. This was then given the appearance of being peeled back to reveal the interior of the truck by presenting 1:1 scale photographic images of both the team’s touring cars and Jeff’s classics.” This bold design concept needed the very best substrates and print technology as well as precision execution in order to deliver this scale of project within the extremely tight two week window. “There was no room for error and no time for reprints, so we needed to be confident that our choice of substrate would be suitable for the job,” said Kenton. “We therefore chose Orajet 3951RA vinyl from our suppliers Antalis, because we needed a consistent, highly reliable wrapping film, which would remain stable print after print, as well as conform well to the deep recesses of the trailer.” By using Orajet with its matching gloss over-laminate, Brillant was able to achieve an incredibly high standard wrap that would withstand the rigors of long distance travel and the heavy demands of racing life. “We used a carefully managed production process to execute the 1,350 sq ft printed wrap, labelling where each set of drops were as they came off the
printer, through the gassing-off stage and then as they received the matching Antalis gloss over laminate to ensure each panel lined up perfectly,” explained Kenton. “Orajet conformed really well to the deep recesses of the trailer and was a consistent and highly reliable wrapping film that remained stable throughout the print and installation process.” “Having worked with Antalis for a very long time and built a relationship of trust in their team and their products, we knew that their expertise, help and support would be on hand at any time should we need it during our tight production schedule.” “Antalis is a great addition to our business — our clients no longer think all paper is the same — they want the highest quality substrate that can offer something special to their projects. We can always rely on Antalis to keep us up to date with the latest developments and new products as well as provide samples that really stand out when we show our clients examples, giving them a competitive edge over other suppliers.” The stunning newly branded articulated trailer was presented to Barley McNaughton who were speechless at the transformation. The project was delivered with a day to spare, and drew considerable comment and admiration from fellow race teams on arrival in Belgium, in particular from the McLaren Formula One crew who declared that ‘it would not look out of place in an F1 paddock.” So delighted with the outcome of the project, that Barley McNaughton commissioned the Brilliant Media team to wrap the race car itself as well as all its pit graphics panels. www.antalis.co.uk

Romax Perfecta Investment ROMAX has completed a £350,000 investment programme with a Perfecta 76 TS E heavy-duty high-speed programmable guillotine and a Horizon AFC-566FG B2 fully automated crossfolding system supplied by IFS. The £4m turnover marketing communications company which encompasses both online and offline marketing channels recently added a Xerox iGen 150 press to run alongside six other Xerox presses, including a Xerox DocuColor 8002. Allied to hardware Romax recently rolled out its new SMS and email platform enabling its clients to effectively produce multi-channel marketing communications. The investment programme is designed to enhance the service Romax provides for a broad customer base that includes the National Theatre, Southbank Centre, telecom providers and exhibition specialists such as Reed Exhibitions Managing Director Robin Sumner, who established the operation in 1997, explains: “The iGen 150 enables us to have a larger printed sheet size of 660mm so we needed a guillotine that could easily handle that. Previously we would have sent the larger sheet size jobs out to a litho printer but now we can keep that inhouse. The Perfecta also has an enlarged side tables and air bed that makes handling sheets easier — so staff are happier and less tired.” He adds: “Since we installed the iGen 150 the throughput in paper has gone up. A system that helps our operators handle more sheets easily was essential. The larger sheet size has also opened up new revenue streams for us but we had to be able to confidently complete the work.” As for choosing the Perfecta he explains: “We went to all the major manufacturers but the Perfecta came out on top for build quality, value for money and production flexibility. We also have such a good relationship with IFS which was a key
factor in our decision.” The Perfecta 76 TS E guillotine has a slotless cutting table that facilitates gentle stock handling and prevents paper dust or debris building up in any mechanical area as the backgauge is driven from above the table. Its cladded surface of corrosion-free stainless steel protects the machine from wear and rust. Its Perfecta ServoDrive offers smooth guidance of the backgauge. Romax also recently invested in a longer sheet package (XL Kit) for its Foliant Gemini C400 A B3+ laminator, also supplied by IFS, which enables lamination of sheets up to 660mm in length from the iGen 150. The Foliant and Perfecta machines can now laminate and cut six-page work that previously would have been outsourced. Wesley Dowding, Operations & Technology Director, adds: “The Perfecta will make us 30% more efficient. Its accessibility will enable us to increase quality. It will also make us more responsive.” The operation’s Horizon AFC-566FG super-B2 fully automated cross-folding system replaced a 15 year old folder. It features two fast-fit tri-creasers that support its ability to score, slit and perforate. There are also two delivery conveyors for further reduced job set up times when changing from parallel folding to cross-folding and vice-versa. The 240mpm folder allows for a wide variety of fold patterns to be produced with ease from 17 standard fold pattern templates. Operation is via a user-friendly, icon-based 10.4” colour touch screen panel that provides access to up to 200 job settings that can quickly and easily be recalled. “We liked the impressive fold combinations,” comments Mr Sumner: “We can do step folds now, run much faster and get a higher quality finish. It is fully automated which is perfect for us because we have a lot of diverse clients and a lot of diverse materials. With easier set up and greater
automation we have cut production downtime by 25% to 30%. We can also create proof samples for customers without wasting sheets in making small set up changes. “The result is we can offer a more value added service. It is a way to increase the conversations we are having with customers. We are no longer just selling to customers we are showing them what else can be achieved and that demonstrates we are always considering ways we can help them further improve what they are doing.” Together the systems are helping Romax eliminate costs in terms or outsourcing but also reducing overall job completion times because there is no need to wait for work to be returned. “It means we can handle more work in a smaller timeframe,” states Mr Sumner. He concludes: “For all our equipment we have a three year write down but we expect these systems to run for ten years and more. And because they have a similar set up and are so easy to use staff can move from one to another which enables productivity to be maintained even when people are on holiday or off sick. There is a hidden benefit too — the fact we are investing in more kit lifts the morale of the staff because they are part of company that is looking towards the future. More automated systems also make working easier and ensure they create high quality jobs, faster.” www.ifsl.uk.com www.romax.co.uk
HP’s Generation 3 Latex CWE Tour CWE maintains that the best way for users to be fully confident in their purchase is to see and try for themselves but they appreciate this is not always possible at opposite ends of the country, so that is why they are continuing with the roadshow model. CWE Director Graham de Kock said, ‘This is the first time we have exhibited in the Bristol area and is certainly the first time the HP Latex 300 series will be demonstrated here alongside other complementary solutions such as wide-format vinyl cutters, laminators and the wide portfolio of Expanse medias covering all applications. There’s something for everyone at these open days whether you’re a sign maker, display graphics printer or exhibition builder and we’d be delighted to welcome all on the day.” The new HP Latex inks give outstanding durability with superior scratch resistance on
vinyl and banner and enhanced quality and performance on a wider range of medias. The high ink density options further extend the superior detail and vibrancy to backlit media and textiles. This year CWE is celebrating its fifteenth year in its current form as a leading large format print specialist, but the company goes back 40 years, initially servicing the technical and intricate demands of the reprographic and CAD market. CWE is now a HP Gold Partner and Gold Production Specialist with HP Gold ServiceOne status, recognising their skills, knowledge and expertise in recommending and supporting large format printing solutions. The company was also the leading reseller of HP Latex printers in the EMEA market last year. The open days will be held at the Eastwood Park Training and Conference Centre on the 14th and
15th of October from 10am to 5pm and are free to attend. Eastwood Park is ideally situated just north of Bristol with easy access from the M5. BIG PETE Celebrates 30 years classic print MANSFIELD-BASED ‘Big Pete’ Colman is celebrating 30 successful years in the sign and graphics industry. Big Pete, founder and managing director of Classic Lines Plus Signs which recently rebranded to Classic Print, has been a loyal Roland DG customer for over 24 years. He says: “It’s been a great 30 years and we’ve really enjoyed working with all our customers over this time, playing our small part in helping them grow their businesses by providing them with great products and a first class service. This industry has changed so dramatically over the last three decades, in particular the last 24 years since we purchased our first Roland Plotter in the early 90s. And, in many ways, Roland DG and Classic Print have shared a history of evolution and growth, both fuelled by a dynamic wide format technology that continues to be innovative and offer new applications and products.” “Over the years, we’ve invested in 16 Roland machines, always keeping pace with the latest offering. Our current portfolio includes a VersaCAMM VS-640 wide format printer, a GX-300 cutter, an EGX-350 desktop engraver and a Metaza MPX-90 Impact Engraver. We have always believed in the performance and reliability of Roland products and the company consistently confirms our faith in it by continuing to deliver outstanding technology, backed by great service and support.” “We must have done just about every possible job over the course of the last 30 years, from the weird to the wonderful, sublime to the ridiculous. However, I still believe the most interesting job you can do is the one that comes next. That is what keeps you going and striving to achieve. Over three decades, we’ve printed everything from wrapping matchbox-sized transit vans to match their full-scale models for a ‘buy one get one free’ campaign to wrapping beer pumps and everything in between!” Pete says that perhaps the hardest thing today is the time management aspect of the business, stating that a lot of time can be consumed waiting for artwork or client approval as clients don’t always understand the time it takes to produce and finish a job. However, he says it is technology like that offered by Roland which has gone a long way to addressing these and other blocks in the production process. “After 30 years, I still get huge satisfaction seeing products I have created again, sometimes many months after completing them. It’s a great feeling. With the help of Roland, we are still extending the range of printable products and services we can offer customers, by integrating technologies like variable data with print and cut for example. If there are any pearls of wisdom I could impart to those just starting out in this business, it is to stick to your plan and have the courage of your convictions. I’ve always driven the business forward with this old proverb in mind: ‘The man who says it cannot be done must not get in the way of the man who is doing it’. It’s served me well for the last 30 years, and I hope it will for 30 more.”
Today, Classic Print offers a full range of printing services to its customers — from outdoor and indoor banners, flags and POS graphics to car wraps, garment personalisation, soft signage, personalised furniture and décor, 3D engraving and promotional products - all of which showcase the incredibly diverse collection of products and applications possible on Roland machines. Continues Pete: “Roland’s wide format machines are very versatile and over time have transformed the way we do business and the type of customers we can attract. Many customers simply can’t believe what can now be printed on a wide format machine, so we have recently opened a showroom to demonstrate our full range of applications and services to customers.” Visitors to the Roland stand at this year’s Sign & Digital UK will have had the opportunity to meet with Big Pete and learn a little more first-hand about how Roland’s robust, reliable technology has helped Classic Print to grow and succeed. “The trade service we offer has grown rapidly over the last few years with many of our new customers being people we have met at Sign & Digital, who perhaps do not have the range of kit that we do. So we can help them on the way to investing in Roland kit for themselves.” Says Jerry Davies, Managing Director, Roland DG: “On behalf of the whole Roland DG team, I would like to congratulate Big Pete and his team on 30 great years in the industry. It’s an outstanding achievement and the company keeps going from strength to strength. Classic Print is the epitome of a Roland customer — an entrepreneur that has worked hard and always invested in great technology to ensure they can keep ahead of the competition and constantly offer customers new and exciting applications.” For further information on Roland DG visit www.rolanddg.co.uk www.classicprint.co.uk
ArtSystems gain new ISO accreditations NOTTINGHAM-BASED ArtSystems has recently announced that two of their operational divisions have gained new ISO accreditations. Xativa and Neschen Supplies, both key parts of the ArtSystems business have been successfully accredited with ISO9001 Quality Management System and ISO 14001 Environmental Management System awards. Both certifications cover the distribution of computer peripherals and accessories, and the supply of a range of technical services associated with them. This means that ArtSystems customers that deal with Xativa and Neschen Supplies are now assured the same quality of service that they enjoy directly from ArtSystems. The team at ArtSystems are delighted, with Simon Cooksey, ArtSystems Operations Director saying that, “These certifications ensure a
continuity of our operational and environmental management processes, and guarantee this for customers who may only deal with us through one of our divisions.” In fact, gaining ISO accreditation brings a good many benefits not just to a company’s customers, but also to the business itself. As David Fenn, ISO Chief Executive points out, “No matter what your marketing and PR says about you, successful organisations recognise that their quality and its assurance is most credible when validated by a respected third party.” He adds that, “The benefits include a more motivated workforce, increased client satisfaction and greater stakeholder value. Achieving recognised certification can also help you qualify for tenders, gain external finance and set you apart from your competitors.” www.artsystems.co.uk

Action Research ‘real deal’ charity Christmas cards TWELVE artists from around the country have teamed up to produce a range of Christmas cards where the beneficiary charity, Action Medical Research, receives ALL of the money. Designers, printers and even envelope makers have all collaborated and donated their services for free to ensure the charity receives every penny from every card sold. A similar initiative last year raised £13,000 for the children’s charity. The idea to publish 12 different packs of Christmas cards, with the charity benefiting from the entire retail price, is the brainchild of Lynn Tait. Lynn, a gallery owner in Leigh on Sea, has owned a greeting card business for more than 20 years. A long-standing supporter of the children’s charity, Lynn again this year invited 12 Ladder Club attendees to design and donate an exclusive piece of artwork for the venture. The Ladder Club seminars are crash-courses in greeting card publishing run on a not-for-profit basis by Lynn. Lynn commented: “After the great success of last year’s initiative raising £13,000 and the wonderful comments from people who bought the cards in 2013, I am very excited to be working with these new artists who have designed a varied collection of lovely cards with every penny going to Action Medical Research. Please support the charity and
help us reach our target of £15,000.” Artists who have donated their artwork for the cards include: Aianna, Dry Red Press, I Drew This, Lorraine Stylianou, Molly Mae, Olivia Goddard Designs, Perkins and Morley, Pink Pig Art, Red Berry Hill, Rose Hill Designs, The Bees Knees, Trumpers World. Nicole Orsi, who designed one of the cards from Red Berry Hill, commented: “I was very excited when I got the call from Lynn to participate in this project and felt very privileged to have been asked. It is such a great idea to take twelve members of the Ladder Club to produce a range of Christmas cards for Action Medical Research. I am proud to support this project and I have really enjoyed producing a design for this wonderful charity.”
Sherwood Press, The Imaging Centre, Enveco and G F Smith have all agreed to donate their services for free to produce the cards. The cards are available to buy from the Action Medical Research website: www.action.org.uk/christmas_cards All of the money raised will help fund medical research into conditions affecting babies and children. Medical research can save and change children’s lives. Yet surprisingly, medical research into conditions that devastate children’s lives is poorly funded. Action Medical Research is currently supporting work around stillbirth, epilepsy, meningitis, cerebral palsy and brain cancer, as well as some rare and distressing conditions that severely affect children. Just one breakthrough, however small, can mean the world.

PUREVA XT’s innovative patented glue mechanism is easily cleaned or changed, thanks to economical glue cartridges, which make it possible to change from PUR to EVA in seconds. It uses an electronic adjustable temperature control with single button operation when switching
between glue types. It also has a totally new kind of rail mechanism for the glue applicator. The applicator glides effortlessly over the book block with almost no resistance. The large handles are placed low in front of the applicator for ease of use. A new PGO Microcut roughener optimises the cutting pattern to increase glue penetration for better binding strength. Unlike other spine rougheners that grind the spine. Creating noise and dust, the PGO opens the paper grain with very little noise and almost no paper dust. Easy to use, the PUREVA XT requires no set up times or book format adjustments. It self -adjusts for book thickness from 1 to 1000 pages (depending on paper stock). It offers easy manual operation, which along with the rugged construction, means low maintenance and years of dependable use. The Fastbind PUREVA XT can be combined with Fastbind Casemakers for high quality hard cover books and photo albums. “Short run soft and hard cover books are growing in demand and have become one of the most profitable products you can offer. Dramatically smaller and considerably lower priced than traditional PUR machines, virtually any print shop can incorporate the flexibility of the PUREVA XT into its existing environment. This is a breakthrough not only for the small to medium sized printers but large binderies as well,” said Lewis Price, Sales Director, Ashgate Automation. www.ashgate.co.uk

Canon new Océ PlotWave 500 CANON has announced the next evolution in its Radiant Fusing technology line-up with the Océ PlotWave 500 – a single footprint, monochrome wide format printer with integrated colour scanner designed for the mid volume technical document market. The new device bridges the gap between the low volume Océ PlotWave 340 and 360 Series and Océ PlotWave 750 production systems. It is ideal for those in the CAD and reprograhic sectors with print volumes between 7,000 and 25,000m2 per year. The Océ PlotWave 500 achieves resolution quality of 600 x 1200 dpi at a speed of 10 A1 pages per minute and features the same Océ ClearConnect touchscreen user panel as other models in the range – akin to tablet technology. The new system also has an improved processing unit, the latest generation of print heads and a capacity of up to four media rolls, allowing for as much as 730m2 of uninterrupted printing. Thanks to Océ Radiant Fusing technology, the Océ PlotWave 500 offers instant warm-up, with only a 30 second turnaround (average) from sleep mode to first print-in-hand. It provides quick warm-up compared to a slow start-up of up to four minutes for conventional printers – saving an hour a day, or more, in printing delays alone. This technology also allows for sharper output when compared to conventional fusing technology, as toner melts on the spot rather than being transferred on a heated roll. The Océ PlotWave 500 is a truly integrated multifunctional wide format solution. The top delivery tray keeps print output neatly collated
by using air separation to ensure prints are in the correct order and not pushed onto the floor. Optimal scanning output is achieved through Océ Colour Image Logic software which automatically compensates for wrinkles and light colours, giving users the best output quality. The Océ PlotWave 500 is more energy efficient than similar technologies available in the market as it consumes and generates only the energy required for each print job, resulting in minimal wastage and reduced heat and ozone emissions. As in the Océ PlotWave 340 and 360 models, the Océ PlotWave 500 is fully integrated with the Cloud, allowing printing from and scanning to the Cloud via mobile phone, tablet, USB flash drive or
a printer’s network. Additionally, those needing to access the printer using a mobile device can do so using the Océ Publisher mobile app. The Océ PlotWave 500 runs on the universal Océ software suite that looks and works the same across all Océ wide format systems. Users can define job settings and run tasks on the Océ ClearConnect multi-touch user panel, driver or submission tool in the same way on all Océ colour and monochrome large format systems. This creates a uniform workflow across the Océ PlotWave 750, Océ PlotWave 340 and 360, Océ ColorWave 650, and Océ ColorWave 300 systems. The Océ PlotWave 500 has been constructed with durable, hard-wearing components to prolong the life of the system and achieve optimal uptime. It is specifically designed for easy servicing, with process units placed in an easily accessible way to reduce the duration of servicing. Remote diagnostics also allow for technicians to access the printer remotely. “The Océ PlotWave technology range has evolved to address the specific needs of customers over the last five years and is now very much a proven technology for productive wide format printing in the technical document space,” said Duncan Smith, Director of Wide Format Group, Canon UK. “This latest development expands the range of Océ PlotWave multifunctional monochrome products and we look forward to demonstrating the strength of this new device to customers, and subsequently helping them to achieve exceptional results.” www.canon.co.uk

Epson launches flatbed film and photo scanners EPSON has introduced two film and photo flatbed scanners: the Perfection V850 Pro and Perfection V800 Photo, for converting back catalogues and collections of photo film and prints into professional-quality digital images. Thanks to the quality of their optics, the size of their scanning area, their wide range of supported film formats and advanced options for dust and scratch removal, they hope to lead the market in this segment. The Perfection V850 Pro and Perfection V800 Photo provide the ultimate in professional scanning quality, speed and productivity across a wide range of positive and negative film formats, including 35mm strip, 35mm slide, medium format and 5x4 inch. The feature-rich Perfection V850 Pro is the ideal scanner for professional photographers and advanced amateurs. Photo enthusiasts wishing to scan an extensive collection of film in a variety of formats will find the Perfection V800 Photo provides easy to use functionality with fast, high-resolution results. The dual lens system delivers high optical resolution scanning of film (at 6400 dpi) and photos (at 4800 dpi), with automatic selection of the
appropriate lens for optimal scan quality and speed. With a high optical density (4.0 Dmax), the scanners reproduce a wide range of tones with extremely high accuracy, especially in dark areas of originals. The new-design film holders are more robust and offer users greater control in adjusting the height of the film holder to fine tune the focus point and achieve sharper focus. The new film holders also include an anti-Newton ring plate to hold the originals flat for improved scan quality. The V850 comes with a second set for increased productivity. Both models feature Digital ICE technologies to remove defects such as dust, hairs, scratches, fingerprints and creases from films, slides and photos, saving the time and effort of manual retouching. Digital ICE for film uses an advanced combination of infrared light and complex algorithms to detect and remove surface defects. For high productivity, these new scanners use Epson’s ReadyScan LED technology, which provides an almost instant warm-up time of less than one second, meaning users can start scanning almost instantly www.epson.eu

Innovative partners and inspiration Growing in stature each year, London Calling at East Wintergarden, Canary Wharf, on 15-16 October 2014, will demonstrate how customers can create added value and increased revenue through new applications and innovations.
T
HE NEW PARTNERS include Antalis, LumeJet, Neopost, Optimus and Taopix which will be lining up alongside established partners Balreed, Esko, Renz, Vivid and Vpress. Visitors to the event can expect to see live demonstrations of next-generation products and integrated workflows as well as having the opportunity to participate in focus groups or be inspired at the Print Café incorporating a showcase of innovative applications. London Calling will also be supported by the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF) and will be promoting PrintIT!, the nationwide education initiative teaching young people about our industry. The event, themed ‘Without Limits’, will take place in the heart of London’s investment district and will have a focus on future investment for the benefit of Duplo’s customers in the industry, customer service and support, and the research and development of new and relevant products. The BPIF and Neopost will lead seminars and focus groups providing a unique opportunity for visitors to delve deeper into the most contemporary research on current and future challenges facing the UK printing industry, including change management, gain new information, debate ideas and share best practice with each other. Sarah Crumpler, Duplo’s UK Marketing Manager, said: “The initial response has been extremely positive. Our choice of partners was guided by the feedback from a customer forum. London Calling
is not an event comprised of individual exhibitors, it is a group of companies collaborating to show how complementary technologies can be brought together.” All QPP Quick Print Professionals are invited to descend on London’s Docklands this month. Sitting snugly among the skyscrapers, and influenced by the Wintergardens of New York, the amazing glass structure boasts impressive transport links and a 27-metre high arched roof, complete with Italian marble floor and suspended gallery; the perfect location for the sixth London Calling. In addition to cementing their position at the forefront of print finishing by sharing best practice, new applications and innovations, the event also marks Duplo’s 30th year in the industry. The Surrey-based company provides finishing and printing equipment to print operations across Europe, the Middle East and Africa and the theme for this year’s two-day event is ‘Without Limits’. The company aims to inspire customers through new applications and innovations.
Sarah Crumpler, talks us through what we can expect. “This is Duplo’s 30th anniversary year. We’re not focusing on the 30 years that have passed, rather the next 30 years and the investment we’ve made into the company, and will continue to make in terms of the product and the service. We’re focusing on what our customers require and so we kick started this year’s London Calling with a customer forum that has steered us in terms of what we’re going to do with the event. “We’ll be creating an application showcase in a print café where we will demonstrate work created by our customers, and the customers of our partners, showing the vast range of possibilities that can be created with different types of finishes. In addition, customer’s operators will stand by machines so they can provide real-time and reallife feedback on their products. We’re investigating a seminar programme too, utilising the suppliers involved who can potentially contribute additional information, areas of interest and, ultimately, get printers networking with each other so they can discuss issues that affect them, instead of us feeding them with information. It’s more about how they can support and talk to each other. The customers at the forum really maximised what they got from the networking evening last year. So we’re following the same format this time to create a platform for printers to get together and inspire each other.” For further information or to register for this must attend event please visit www. duplolondoncalling.com Everyone who registers and attends will be entered into a prize draw.

DUPLO PRODUCT LAUNCHES TO ADD EXTRA SPARKLE TO LONDON CALLING DUPLO will be unveiling several innovative new products at London Calling, an event growing in stature each year for the finishing company celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2014. Building on its best-in-class systems through extensive R&D, Duplo and its partners will be showing visitors how advances in technology can create added value and increase revenue through new applications and innovations. Duplo will use the event to formally unveil new finishing systems launched during 2014. One of the major attractions will be the live showing of the Duplo iSaddle Duetto System, one of three new iSaddle systems; the fully automatic stitching system offers intelligent automated precision combined with PC controlled technology.
The iSaddle brings the advantages of flatter publications from the old-generation saddle stitchers and combines them with the automation of modern bookletmakers with many additional features including A4 landscape capability. Building on an award-winning range of multifinishers Duplo is also launching the DC616PRO, the DC-646 and the integrated folding system for the DC-646 models. The DC-616 is an all-in-one solution for finishing standard short run jobs such as greeting cards, invitations, menus and 24-up business cards. It is able to slit, cut, crease and perforate bringing automation and greater efficiency to the finishing process. The DC-646 is the latest variation of the DC646PRO replacing the DC-645i, the optional integrated folding system also being launched, works without impacting the productivity of the multifinishers. Other new products include the DP-F850 digital duplicator and the DM230Vi direct mail collator with barcode driven variable data capability, as well as the commercial launch of the UB-6000 PUR Binder, which is a closed tank system ideal for producing a number of different jobs in the same day. The hotmelt side gluing “locks the book in” meaning it can be trimmed and packed for the customer faster than conventional PUR-only devices. www.duplouk.com
RENZ TO PARTNER DUPLO AT LONDON CALLING
RENZ UK will partner Duplo at the forthcoming London Calling. The company has been involved with London Calling since its inception six years ago. “The world class venues have obviously been a big draw for customers but one of the main reasons for the continuous success of London Calling is the customer focused innovations that improve every year,’ commented Iain Bullock, managing director of Renz UK. Renz has been at the forefront of this innovative approach with improvements in its punching and binding technologies. In particular the Mobi 360 semi-automatic calendar and book binding machine has seen several upgraded features such as: Tool free make ready; Smaller footprint; and Elimination of de-spooler for separating paper. This single phase semi-automatic wire binding machine has become very popular in finishing departments across the UK. The Mobi 360 will feature alongside a range of bench-top punching and binding solutions from Renz and will be part of a live workflow at the event. www.renz.co.uk

Neopost will be exhibiting for the first time and will showcase how their technology can provide a platform for the simple delivery of both marketing and transactional communications. The company will demonstrate how its hardware and software technologies can facilitate multichannel campaigns to meet an organisation’s communications needs. The communications specialist recently commissioned the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF) to conduct research into the UK printing sector, and has published the results in a new report: Future Focus – the UK Printing Industry. Neopost will be hosting seminars based on the findings of this report at the event. www.neopost.co.uk

Harrier LLC, a digital printing photobook specialist, based in Newton Abbot, Devon, has announced the purchase and installation of a DigiBook 300 PUR perfect binding machine from Morgana Systems.
T
HE COMPANY, WELL known for its significant installation of HP Indigo presses, houses a wide variety of finishing kit to produce photobooks and other digitally printed output for major high street and online brands. The company also prints for Truprint, itself a part of the Harrier LLC business. The investment in the Morgana DigiBook 300 gives the company quality PUR binding for its larger product offerings, including XXL landscape books that can often extend to as much as 160 pages. “The Morgana product really hits the spot for our premium XXL landscape books. There really isn’t that much of a choice with regards to machines that can deliver a quality bind in that format,” said James Belton, Planning and Solutions Manager at Harrier LLC. “95% of our work is PUR bound — it provides the quality of bind that is essential for the digitally printed work that we produce.” “Having reviewed the machines on the market, and had samples produced on the front-runners, Morgana’s DigiBook 300 came out way ahead of the rest. The quality of the milling station in particular put it out in front. With digital papers it is critical to significantly roughen the spine in order to produce the strength of bind that our customers expect, and that these high quality products deserve. “The small footprint of the machine
was an added bonus as well — it doesn’t take up that much floor space. We generally only assign one operator to the machine, though we can increase the output at particularly busy times by adding a second. “Photobook products bound on the machine are typically runs of one, but can range in content from 20 pages up to 160 pages — that creates a sizeable publication. The side gluing capability of the DigiBook 300 is a big plus especially on larger page counts. It helps to provide that solidity of bind that we insist on and that delivers a product that is really going to last.” Harrier LLC operates eight Indigo presses and a wide range of finishing solutions from its dual site production space in Devon, where the company employs a team of 150, swelling to over 300 at seasonally busy times. “One of the reasons that we had the sample books produced is in order to put the finished products on our “page pull tester” to test the binding. We work to industry standard but the DigiBook 300 samples were so well bound that the test results far exceeded our standard expectations and in some cases actually went off the scale!” Commenting on the installation at Harrier LLC on behalf of Morgana Systems, Ray Hillhouse, Sales and Marketing Director for the supplier, said: “It is a delight to see the
James Belton, Harrier LLC’s Planning and Solutions Manager
DigiBook 300 positioned in such a demanding binding environment. The team at Harrier LLC were very thorough in their testing before selecting the right machine for the job, and that has to be to the credit of the DigiBook 300 — it is both rugged and hard working, making it very suitable to the demands of this extremely busy and quality conscious print business.” The DigiBook 300 is suited to both traditional and digital printers who require short to medium runs of PUR perfect bound books to a truly professional standard. These innovative machines are equipped with a patented closed gluing system where the spine and side gluing is applied by a slot applicator for the utmost binding quality and accuracy. It is an innovative perfect binding machine designed and built for the very latest market requirements. It is easy to use, even by non-specialised personnel, via a touch screen panel with icon graphics that allow the programming of all precision operations in just a few seconds, including start-up and shutdown. There are a thousand alphanumeric memories available, which enable repeat jobs to be saved for later recall, thus providing totally automatic setup in a few seconds.
Harrier LLC is the UK branch of District Photo, one of the largest photo product related producers in the US. Working with and drawing on the experience of its parent company, Harrier LLC has hand picked the most suitable equipment to create top quality prints and personalised gifts. It is able to make the most of its photo processing background with its silver halide printing capability along with the largest fleet of HP Indigo presses under one roof in the UK. This printing capability, combined with dye-sublimation technology, gives the company the ability to offer a wide range of photo products. The company also has a growing commercial printing business that sits perfectly alongside the long established photo print and photo gift production. The range is diverse. Photo gifts stretches beyond photobooks. It also includes photo canvas, made in the company’s own dedicated site from start to finish; photo calendars; mugs; posters; placemats; and so much more. The company has created a resilient multi-functional operation, benefitting from cross-functional innovation. www.morgana.co.uk www.harrierllc.co.uk

Living under the digital cloud
Like it or not we are all now living under a cloud, the cyber cloud that is, and rely upon communication and information that is contained and transmitted by it. Martin Christie looks to see its silver lining…
A
DOBE’S DECISION TO move its software into the clouds — so that instead of buying a hard copy, or downloading a one off purchase, it is accessed through subscription — was controversial twelve months ago among many vocal users. The debate seems to have died down, however, with most consumers accepting that it is just the way it’s going to be, and taking the positive aspects of the move into account. For the individual, who can still get a thirty-day free trial, a further monthly subscription that can be cancelled or renewed when budget or need demands, is a better deal than a much larger one-off fee. For the business, with a bureau that may have several working computers or more, there is the possibility of, rather than upgrading all, being selective in matching particular machines to specific tasks. Nice to have everything available in the toolkit, but if it is hardly ever opened, it’s an expensive bundle of software to keep in the box. The basic functions of opening email or files from memory sticks can be handled by any terminals, as long as anything requiring particular attention can be instantly networked to another device. I always stress that other software packages are available, but such is the dominance of Adobe, both in the market place and the work space, that it is hard for the professional to make any other choice. It may be fine for an individual working at home to use some freeware downloaded but, when it comes to transfer to print and file management, big A sets the standard. Corel Draw, a comprehensive graphics package, and its related raster programme, PhotoPaint, are very good, and cost effective, and once very popular with designers. But the problem is that having a programme that does everything like Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator, but not quite in the same way, is like trying to sell car to a regular driver when all the pedals have been rearranged and the steering wheel works the opposite way. The whole idea behind Adobe’s Creative Suite sequence of packages was to pull together all the individual pieces of software, pixel and vector based, so that they could be integrated and files moved seamlessly between them. With the latest introduction of internet-based Creative Cloud, that principle is extended to enable colour management of files through all compatible platforms. With print production, there has always been an issue of colour variation between proofs done in one programme, and multiple runs done in another. One of the crucial areas, when handling lots
of different files from many different sources, as typical with print-on-demand, is the day-to-day organisation of them, management and editing, as well as identifying quickly anything which may be an issue further down the production line. In this task, the most useful, and often least used tool is Adobe Bridge. Bridge started life as a simple browser to view images in early versions of Photoshop, but it has grown in scope and function, and is now a standalone feature within the Creative Cloud collection so that it can run independently. Bridge generates a thumbnail of most file types in any folder for easy viewing. Files can be filtered by type or placed into collections for processing, and keywords can be added which make future searches so much easier, especially if they include job information which will not be in the original file. These details are listed in columns on the left side of the workspace. In the centre are the thumbnail sketches themselves. These can be varied in size to show detail or compact the view, and can include detail file information like title, size, resolution etc. The same information will be recorded in panels on the right hand side of the screen when an individual thumbnail is selected, but in addition there is also metadata, which contains all the buried treasure normally hidden when a file is simply open in a Windows browser for example. The metadata information is one of the most useful guides to a file because it contains its history and its make-up. It may tell you, for example, how and when it was created, and what programme. This is handy because it may indicate that it is a copy of an original, and that a higher resolution version may be available. This is common where a customer may have actually
generated a decent original but just saved a poor copy. There is also the familiar scenario where the artwork has actually been created by someone else, and perhaps sent as a low resolution copy by email. Alternatively, a customer may be convinced that this is the same file printed some time ago, when it is actually a copy, which may have significance if colour is to be printed accurately. If it’s a camera file, it could have all the detail from the camera make to the actual settings used by the photographer. Even if you are not a camera buff, having make and model makes it easy to google and see exactly what type of camera it was taken with. This is a clue to the likely quality for output, if it was taken with a basic compact or a top of the range DSLR. Even if it was taken ‘with a very good camera’ as I have often heard, the camera settings will tell you whether it was taken in very good light conditions, or whether it was pushing the limits of light, shutter speed or lens, and give a clue as to why it isn’t as crystal clear as the customer expects from the screen of their iPad when it prints out. As a very general guide for non-photographers, a shutter speed below 1/60th second is likely to cause blurred edges to an image caused by even minute camera movement when the picture is taken. A lens apperture of below F5.6 is also likely to lose clarity unless it’s used on good quality optics or in very good light conditions. These issues will only become apparent when the image is enlarged, but the shooting data may give you a warning of that, or simply advise you that while the original was taken with a very good camera, this is a poor quality copy. From Bridge, files can be opened in whatever programme is appropriate, but it is a perfect starting point for reviewing and selecting multiple

files, often contained with numerous others when presented by a customer on a memory stick. Individual files can be labelled with a colour, or starred, so they can be picked out, and the display altered to include only the pick. The chosen ones can then be transferred to a selected print folder and even batch renamed automatically to contain customer and date information for example (Tools>Batch Rename). There are several ways of displaying the main thumbnail panel, as a film strip, for example, or with keywords or metadata. It can also be customised to suit an individual user, and the
workspace saved, so that can be selected to suit whoever is at the controls at any one time. Another neat display mode is called review, which enables a rolling slide show of images, useful for a customer that brings in a camera card with lots of similar images that can’t be selected easily by thumbnail. The review can flash full size images quite quickly, and individual items picked. Bridge also creates a cache of files opened so that they can be quickly searched and retrieved. This can be very memory hungry in a busy working environment so it might be preferable to manage the size or the actual location
(Edit>Preferences>Cache). But it does mean you can quickly access recently used files, and the information associated with them. Bridge is one of those programmes that was always there but you never realised how useful it could be till you used it. Admittedly Adobe has muddied the water a bit by moving some of the really useful output functions out of the new Creative Cloud, but some, like the PDF creator and Contact Sheet are available as plug-ins. There are more tricks in the Bridge tool kit, but that’s enough for starters if you haven’t used it before. A little more next month.
Inktec invite AN interesting invite from Inktec inks to visit a smart London Art Gallery was difficult to ignore. The Korean manufacturer was showcasing art from internationally renowned abstract painter Jeffrey Kroll, using its own Jetrix UV flatbed printer, and printed from digital files originally taken on a Samsung mobile phone. Given that the trend in fine art printing has been to match high resolution scans or top end digital photography with pigment inkjet printers boasting a dozen colour options, the prospect of using a simple phone camera and a basic four colour solvent printer seemed to run against all the perceived wisdom. I have to confess, I wasn’t aware of Jeffrey Kroll’s work before, but a quick search on Google spared any blushes before I went to the viewing, and I was aware I was in very respected and highly valued company in the art world. You don’t get wall space in Piccadilly with any old rubbish and with some price tags as much as most of us earn in a year, it does deserve your attention. Equally, the amiable American’s obvious enthusiasm for the whole process and its vivid results, as well as a lack of pretension, was a breath of fresh air in what can often become a rarified atmosphere a little short of oxygen. Kroll does not use the mobile phone to capture a complete

image, but a myriad of aspects of it: colour, relief, perspective. These then become a kaleidoscope of complimentary parts to produce a full sized print, produced on top grade canvas on the Jetrix, stretched, and then worked on again by the artist with washes, and arcylics to enhance individual aspects to create the final piece. It’s this artistic collaboration between the creative individual and the functional digital printer that makes for a unique and original work of art, and extends the possibilities to more than just reproduction. UV cured inks of course can be printed on virtually any material, as unlike inkjets they don’t require any coating to mate with on the surface, so the possibilities of this or similar projects are endless. Because of the way the flatbed builds up layers, it is even possible to build up a three dimensional type of relief, rather than a totally flat surface. The printing is done by Banbury based specialists Senecio, who have been using Jetrix for a number of years, along with other fine art projects. As well as making the solvent printer and the inks for it, Inktec has a twenty year history in developing and supplying inkjet inks and media for other manufacturers machines, and has a UK base in Whitney, Oxfordshire for closer European support for its products. Jeffery Kroll’s exhibition at the prestigious Mead Carney gallery will have finished by the time you read this, but you can see more on line, and find out more about Inktec and Jetrix printers. www.inktec.com, www.jetrixuv.com, www.krollogy.com

Munken becomes environmentally smart
IT will now be easier to choose environmentally smart paper and create environmentally labelled printed matter. Arctic Paper Munkedals, renowned for its outstanding graphic fine paper, used by designers, advertising agencies, publishing houses and printers throughout Europe, has recently certified its entire product range in accordance with EU Ecolabel, the official environmental label for the European Union. Advanced environmental work and environmental labelling are nothing new at Arctic Paper Munkedals. The highly rated design and book grades in the Munken range have been produced for a long time using environmentally labelled raw materials from forests where the forest management has been certified according to the international standards FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification). Several of the mill’s products have for many years also been approved according to Svanen (Nordic Ecolabel), resulting in what is known as inspected paper. Svanen is a well-established brand in the Nordic region and customers have for a long time been able to choose Munken safe in the knowledge that the paper has been produced sustainably. Arctic Paper Munkedals has now gone a step further and environmentally certified its entire product range according to EU Ecolabel, the official EU standard. Anders Fransson, Technical and Environmental Coordinator for the Arctic Paper Group, said: “We chose EU Ecolabel as we work on an international market with Europe as our primary market area. EU Ecolabel covers all aspects of a product’s life cycle and it is this level of assurance that we are seeking to communicate to our customers.” EU Ecolabel is having a growing impact. Printed matter carrying the EU Ecolabel first became available in the graphic industry a few years ago and it has led to an increase in demand for certified paper. At the same time, an increasing number of printers are also having their production processes environmentally certified. EU Ecolabel covers the production of raw materials and paper from all aspects, including emissions to air and water, the use of chemicals, the use of energy and resources and the handling of waste. Anders Fransson stated: “There has been a steady increase in demand for certified paper products among our customers. There is considerable interest in the industry in sustainability. We are proud of our environmental involvement and EU Ecolabel is the latest in a series of initiatives that reflect our total commitment to sustainability.” School classes and customers frequently visit the mill’s Environment Centre along with the adjoining purification facility and park and they are all astounded that the water is as clean when it leaves the mill as it was when it first entered. www.arcticpaper.com

Commemorating 25 years of Mondi MONDI introduced BIO TOP 3 twenty five years ago and in recognition of the long-term performance of its unique off-white, TCF brand is now offering BIO TOP 3 80 g/ m² in a CO2 neutral version to further strengthen the paper’s exceptional environmental credentials. First developed as office paper, then as a hybrid paper for offset printing and now also available for high-speed inkjet applications, BIO TOP 3 has kept pace with market developments. BIO TOP 3 was developed in Mondi Neusiedler in 1989. At the time of its ground breaking launch, it was the world’s first TCF paper on the market and continues to be produced totally chlorine free and without any optical brightening agents (OBAs) today. As a result the paper retains a natural uncoated feel with an off-white shade. “In the meantime we believe it is not a shade but an attitude – towards more: More versatility for different applications, more environmental requirements, better colour reproduction and more impact with printed products. That is the secret behind BIO TOP 3’s enduring success on the market,” said Johannes Klumpp, Marketing & Sales Director, Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper. BIO TOP 3 is also EU Ecolabel and Austrian Environmental Label certified, with a Life Cycle Assessment and bears Mondi’s Green Range label for sustainably produced products. It is suitable for digital, preprint and offset applications. With the launch of the BIO TOP 3 LOOKBOOK, Mondi’s high-end marketing tool showcasing the power of paper to complement good design, BIO TOP 3 is positioned primarily for premium catalogues, corporate design and sustainability reports, and premium books. As in recent years, Mondi has chosen BIO TOP 3 for the printing of its sustainability report, Sharing their sustainable future 2013, which is available upon request or online under www.mondigroup.com/sustainability. This positioning document provides an insight into what sustainable development means to Mondi within a global context. “I often get asked to recommend a sustainable paper and when I do I always say BIO TOP 3,” says Angie Rattay, founder of the charity platform NEONGREEN NETWORK and the annual EARTHtalks held in the Hofburg. “It is also the paper I chose for the Earth Talks programmes again this year.” Mondi’s innovative BIO TOP 3 LOOKBOOK, an art and design catalogue launched in 2013 to showcase the potential of BIO TOP 3, was recognised with the Golden Pixel Award 2013 and the Printissimo 2013 awards. “Be it a limited edition artistic screen print by Perfekt Prints or the latest Triumph Essence autumn/winter dessous catalogue, with BIO TOP 3 we are in touch every day with our customers – and that since 25 years, ” concludes Klumpp. For more information please see: www.mondigroup.com/biotop3

Invest in your own 3D print service today
HOT from the QPP development lab is this first impressions report on an ideal entry level 3D printer at just under £750. Over the summer weeks we have been getting to grips with STL files, slicing them up and building 3D prints. All very easy as our chosen printer, the PP3DP from One Touch Laser, comes with free UP Mini software that sites the image with auto placement, loads the file, works out the print time and gramage of raw material. Pricing your new service can be worked out on these two ingredients and adding the ROI on your new kit. However it is not just the additional GP created here, as in these early days, pioneers prosper by being first. Offering a 3D print service will promote all of your existing print products as you will be in front of what’s new and very much in fashion. Tomorrow’s world is being fed by an appetite for new technology with 3D news covering anything from human parts to food. The growing market requires some part of the service industry to hang their hat on 3D printing; should it be libraries, locksmiths or how about QPP quick print professionals who already understand pre-press and offer a print service to end users? Yes, some of your new customers will at first know a little more about rapid prototyping, 3D modelling, selective laser sintering, fused deposition modelling and sterolithography. Ha, none of this matters to begin with as the entry level kit will just print from STL files your customers have created in CAD or Adobe to name a couple of design software packages we are all used to. Like all things print we will have to offer expert advice but taking it slowly will enable us all to start on this new learning curve and make further investments in kit and dedicated staff when necessary. For the minute just jump on so as not to miss the bus. I remember when starting a Canon colour copy service in 1984 there wasn’t a market for short run colour printing. Why? Well it was never available before
and customers had got used to being told no. Our copy bureau, covering three counties, regularly won the national competition for highest print volume with just 5000 prints per month! RISK ASSESSMENT
Accredited Print Supplier
All print shop owners must conduct a risk assessment. Those with five or more employees have to record the significant findings of their risk assessment. To assist with the process, we have included a sample entry for a ficticious copy shop to illustrate what is expected. Identify the hazards that are the real priorities and complete the table accordingly. Printers with five or more employees must have a written health and safety policy and risk assessment. It is important to discuss your assessment and proposed actions with staff, or their representatives. Review your risk assessment if you believe it may no longer be valid; e.g: following an accident in the workplace, or if there are any significant changes to the hazards in your workplace, such as new equipment or work activities. HUSBAND AND WIFE GO TO THE DOCTORS
HOW MAN WAS MADE In the beginning God created Eve, and she had three breasts. After three weeks in the garden, God came to visit Eve. ‘How’s things, Eve?’ He asked. ‘It is all so beautiful, God,’ she replied, ‘the sunrises and sunsets are breath taking, the smells, the sights, everything is wonderful but I just have this one problem. It’s these three breasts you’ve given me. The middle one pushes the other two out, and I am constantly knocking them with my arms, catching them on branches, snagging them on bushes, they’re a real pain,’ reported Eve. That’s a fair point,’ replied God, ‘but it was my first shot at this you know. I gave the animals, what, six? So I just figured you’d need half, but I see that you are right. I’ll fix that up right away!’ So, God reaches down and removes the middle breast, tossing it into the bushes. Three weeks passed, and God once again visited Eve in the garden. ‘Well, Eve, how’s my favourite creation?’ He asked. ‘Just fantastic,’ she replied, ‘but for one small oversight on your part. You see, all the animals are paired off. The ewe has her ram, the cow has her bull, all the animals have a mate except me. I feel so alone.’ God thought for a moment. ‘You know, Eve, you’re right. How could I have overlooked this! You do need a mate and I will immediately create Man from a part of you! Now, let’s see ... where did I put that useless tit?’
SEX STEPS 1 The first is Smurf Sex. This happens during the honeymoon, you both keep doing it until you’re blue in the face. 2 The second is Kitchen Sex. This is at the beginning of the marriage. You’ll have sex anywhere, anytime, even in the kitchen. 3 The third kind is Bedroom Sex. You’ve calmed down a bit, perhaps have kids, so you have to do it in the bedroom. 4 The fourth kind is Hallway Sex. This is where you pass each other in the hallway and say, ‘Screw you!’ 5 There is also a fifth kind of sex: Courtroom Sex. This is when you get divorced and your wife screws you in front of everyone in the courtroom.
HARRY HAD A BIT OF A DRINKING PROBLEM Every night, after dinner, he took off for the local watering hole, spent the entire evening there and arrived home, well inebriated, around midnight each night. He always had trouble getting his key into the keyhole and getting the door opened. His wife, waiting up for him, would go to the door and let him in. Then she would proceed to yell and scream at him for his constant nights out and his returned drunken state. But Harry continued his nightly routine. One day, the wife, distraught by it all, talked to a friend about her husband’s behaviour. The friend listened to her and then asked, “Why don’t you treat him a little differently when he comes home? Instead of berating him, why don’t you give him some loving words and welcome him home with a kiss? He then might change his ways.” The wife thought it was worth trying. That night, Harry took off again after dinner. Around midnight, he arrived home in his usual condition. His wife heard Harry at the door and let him in. This time, instead of berating him as she had always done, she took his arm and led him into the living room. She sat him down in an easy chair, put his feet up on the settee and took his shoes off. Then she went behind him and started to cuddle him a little. After a while, she said to him, “It’s pretty late. I think we had better go upstairs to bed now, don’t you?” At that, Harry replied in his inebriated state, “I guess we might as well. I’ll get in trouble if I go home anyway!”
BLIND DRUNK A blind man and his guide dog enter a bar and find their way to a bar stool. After ordering a drink, and sitting there for a while, the blind guy yells to the bartender ‘Hey, you wanna hear a blonde joke?’ The bar immediately becomes absolutely quiet. In a husky, deep voice, the woman next to him says, ‘Before you tell that joke, you should know something. The bartender is blonde, the bouncer is blonde, and I’m a 6’ tall, 200lb. blonde with a black belt in karate. What’s more, the woman sitting next to me is blonde and she’s a weight lifter. The lady to your right is a blonde, and she’s a pro wrestler. Think about it seriously, Mister! You still wanna tell that joke?’ The blind guy says, ‘Nah, not if I’m gonna have to explain it five times.’

MEN LOVE BEER Scientists had a theory that beer contains small traces of female hormones. To test their theory, they fed 100 men 12 pints of beer, and observed that 100% of them gained weight, talked excessively loudly without making sense, became emotional and couldn’t drive. No further testing was deemed necessary.
LAST POST An elderly man, 82, just returned from the doctor’s only to find he didn’t have long to live. So he summoned the three most important people in his life to tell them of his fate: 1. His doctor 2. His priest 3. His solicitor. He said, “Well, today I found out I don’t have long to live. So, I have summoned you three here, because you are the most important people in my life, and I need to ask a favour. Today, I am going to give each of you an envelope with £50,000 inside. When I die, I would ask that all three of you throw the money into my grave.” After the man passed on, the three people happened to run into each other. The doctor said, “I have to admit I kept £10,000 of his money. He owed me from lots of medical bills. But, I threw the other £40,000 in like he requested. “The Priest said, “I have to admit also, I kept £25,000 for the church. It’s all going to a good cause. I did, however, throw the other £25,000 in the grave.” Well the solicitor just couldn’t believe what he was hearing! “I am surprised at you two for taking advantage of him like that. I wrote a cheque for the full amount and threw it all in!”

GHOSTS A psychiatrist is addressing a group of people who have all had experiences with the supernatural. He asks: “Who here has seen a ghost?” Everyone puts up their hands. He then asks: “Who here has spoken with a ghost?” Half the audience puts up their hands. “And who here has touched a ghost?” Ten per cent of the crowd puts up their hands. He asks: “And who here has made love with a ghost?” One little man in the back row puts up his hand... The psychiatrist looks down from the podium at the little man and says: “Do you mean to tell me that you have made love with a ghost?” The man replies, “Oh No! I’m sorry. I couldn’t hear you correctly. I thought you said ‘goat’.”
