print businesses. We often use one member as a test site, which can provide the whole group with invaluable experience of the machines in a working environment. We are a great example of practicing what we preach and only sell products that our own members actually use in their bureaus and know to be reliable and robust, delivering great quality for the best value.” For more information on the full range of HP wide format equipment available through GDL Network, visit http://www.hpdesignjet.net/. Premier Reel Paper re-organisation
THE Premier Paper Group has announced that over the last few months the Premier Reel Paper team have been busy re-establishing their business, providing an increased service offering for customers, following the demise of PaperlinX and the team joining the Premier Paper Group in April this year. Premier acquired the assets of PaperlinX’s Reel Paper and Savory Paper division and offered positions to more than 30 former PaperlinX employees back in April, with the new Premier Reel Paper senior management team comprising of Steve Webb, Sam Catterall and Ben Woolf. The Premier Reel Paper team also comprises of key personnel with many years experience and a great track record in the business forms, direct mail and digital inkjet markets. Support from suppliers has been a key factor in maintaining service levels and ensuring continuity of supply for all Premier Reel Paper customers whilst the business has undergone the re-organisation. As part of the re-organisation, a unique purpose built 55,000 ft facility in Castle Donington allows customers to benefit from next day or same day deliveries from stock. Additionally there is also substantial wharf stock available in key product lines to back up Castle Donington, and also provide for direct deliveries into customers within a 24/48 hour time frame. Premier Reel Paper has added to its service offering in recent years, complementing its core supply line into business forms and direct mail. These emerging market sectors include the areas of integrated labels, digital ink jet, envelope base reels and also the roll and tag market.
The diversification into these new areas together with the extensive resources of the wider company will ensure there is an exciting future ahead for the team within the Premier Paper Group. Customers have been extremely supportive during this time of change, allowing Premier Reel Paper to regain its position in the continuous reels market, for which the Premier Reel Paper team is extremely grateful. Commenting on the re-organisation of the Premier Reel Paper business, Steve Webb stated; “The whole team at Premier Reel Paper have pulled together through this difficult period and are now reaping the benefits of being part of an independent and forward looking company. Addison Print Installs first UK Valiani from Morgana ADDISON Print, Northampton, has announced details of the installation of the first Valiani cutting device from Morgana Systems The Valiani Mat Pro Ultra V was first shown by Morgana at a recent open house event at its Milton Keynes premises. Addison Print directors Adam Matthews and Ian Harper had gone to the event to take a closer look at a new bookletmaker that was badly needed in the finishing department. “We discovered the Valiani completely by accident, having taken up Morgana’s open house invite to look at a new bookletmaker,” confirmed Adam Matthews. “We couldn’t help notice the Valiani as it was taking centre stage and drawing quite a crowd. We saw what it could do and realised that it was exactly what we needed for one specific area of work that we were producing on a regular basis. “We have a customer that is a major producer of light bulbs for the country. They use us to help them to produce a large variety of test packaging. That can involve a lot of awkward cutting tasks and expensive cutting forms. The Valiani is the ideal solution to the problem, as these marketing runs are just a few dozen copies. Of course, once we had seen what the machine could do we began thinking of an awful lot of other areas of work where the machine could be very useful.” As an aid to the production of the light bulb packs the company added a third element to its purchase: a Vivid laminating device. The complete investment — the Valiani, the booklet maker, and Vivid laminating device — is valued in the region of £75,000. The Vivid 530 lamination equipment provides for matt, soft touch and gloss lamination for both litho and digital production. Taking up the story of the original reason for the visit to Morgana, Ian Harper said: “Our ageing booklet making equipment was in need of replacement, but these products have come a long way in recent years: this latest machine is
able to handle both un-collated and pre-collated work, as well as create a square back finish to the final booklet — a set of features that really came into their own only a few days after installation. “We needed to produce a staff handbook for a large toy store. The longer part of the run was printed litho and so we needed to collate the double page spreads into a book, add the cover, and then stitch and trim, but we were also able to finish the product with a square back thanks to this Morgana binder. Then we had a shorter run of the publication to produce for Ireland. This suited digital printing and therefore ran through the same binder as pre-collated sets with a cover added. The booklet was also finished with the square back option. The job was an ideal example of what this machine could do for us, and it only took an afternoon to do the whole job: without this product we would have had to put the job out for trade binding as our previous binder could not have handled it. I don’t like to think how many days that would have added to the production schedule!” The Morgana System 2000 collator and bookletmaker is equipped with Morgana’s SquareFold unit, and is capable of producing up to 3,000 books per hour. The Valiani has been put to good use in a variety of directions since its arrival in July. The company has been producing jig-saw products for a preschool customer, and has been asked to produce test packaging for Brownie snack boxes for a major football club. “The product is ideal for producing marketing or sample pieces of packaging,” said Adam Matthews. “The light bulb customer, for example, takes samples of its latest packaging concepts into its customers and gauges opinion and gets reaction to a new line. We have also been using it to cut out bunting products for a longstanding client — this includes different shapes and sizes of personalised bunting. Whilst we have been producing wedding stationery for customers for some time, the arrival of this machine has meant
that we have been able to create some unique cutout wedding products and have also been able to add embossing to our range of capabilities — the Valiani can be used to produce a blind embossing effect on board products, with a range of tools to create different embossing designs.” The Valiani can cut through a variety of thicknesses with no problem: Addison Print has been working with 3mm foamex recently. “It’s a very versatile machine and occupies such a small footprint, but offers a 1.5m x 1m flatbed working surface,” added Adam. Digital production at Addison Print takes place with a Xerox J75 SRA3 printer, which is happy handling a range of substrates from 80gsm through to 350gsm, wide format work with a Mimaki solvent printer, whilst litho printing is handled with a twocolour Ryobi press complete with numbering and perforating unit. Addison Print produces a wide variety of commercial print with a team of just four full time staff and one part time. www.morgana.co.uk

Your Print Solution invests in Morgana PUR Binding DIGITAL print business Your Print Solution, High Wycombe, has announced the installation of a DigiBook 200 PUR binder from Morgana Systems . The unit represents the first venture into PUR binding for the company. The Morgana DigiBook 200 is the perfect match for the short to medium production runs undertaken at the High Wycombe company. Commenting on the purchase decision, Steven Brown, Managing Director of Your Print Solution, said: “We had looked at hot melt binding as a solution, but the latest range of Morgana’s PUR machines really impressed us with the quality of bind produced and the range of materials that it could handle. “We had been using a short-run fast bind solution previously, working with EVA glue, but we were finding this unsuitable for larger publications and certainly troublesome for digitally produced pages on certain stocks. PUR seems to be able to cope with just about anything we need to bind, delivering a solid, reliable finished publication.” Typical binding work at the company can be anything from runs of one through to 200 copies or more. The DigiBook 200 handles spine lengths from 110mm to 320 mm and a maximum thickness of 50mm. “During this first few weeks of operation with the DigiBook 200 our team has been able to test out the product on a wide variety of work, including a run of brochures consisting of 300 copies. Production has been fast and the strength of bind is fantastic. “This new machine will help us move into the short-run digital photobook market, where the business-tobusiness sector will be in sharp focus for us. We are also intending to expand our trade binding services as there are currently no other short-run PUR capabilities in this area,” added Steven Brown. In addition to producing digital print via its Indigo 7000, the company also produces a comprehensive range of wide format work via the latest HP Designjet L26500. The near ten year old business employs a team of 17 at its West Wycombe Road premises. The PUR binder joins a Morgana DigiFold machine and a host of other finishing solutions including bookletmaking, folding, case-bound book production, and wire-o-binding. Web-to-print is an important focus for the company. Its largely bespoke system manages the print requirements of a number of major customers, including Wimpy, Twentieth Century Fox, and YMCA. Taking the work it produces for Wimpy as an example of the power the system brings to job preparation, Steven Brown explains: “We produce four different menus per
restaurant, for 150 locations, but as they are all franchised businesses each has its own pricing: that is quite a challenge, but it’s the sort of thing that our web-toprint system helps us to produce quickly, accurately and effectively.” Commenting on the installation at Your Print Solution, Ray Hillhouse, Vice President Offline Business at Morgana Systems said: “DigiBook 200 is fast becoming the UK’s short to medium run perfect binder of choice, and Your Print Solution has the perfect mix of work for the machine. It will be the ideal finishing solution to help them into the photobook market. “As many companies have recognised, hot melt binding is not the ideal system when dealing with short-run digitally printed output. The unique range of DigiBook PUR products from Morgana offer the ideal solution for printers that need to produce quality binding for digitally printed publications.” For further information on Your Print Solution call 01494 372 800, or visit the www.yourprintsolution.co.uk web site. www.morgana.co.uk

Calling in on Caslon
Last month, QPP roving reporter Nick Hancock visited Caslon in St Albans and received a warm welcome from both Roy Caslon (Chairman) and David Ball (Sales Director).
I
WAS INTERESTED to learn that William Caslon 1st, who was an engraver of firearms, founded the company back in 1720. This later led to a career in type design when he created a typeface for the New Testament in Arabic. Over 295 years later Caslon remains one of the most popular typefaces of all time… bet you didn’t know that! Whilst sitting in their meeting room (which resembled a museum) I noticed memorabilia in their oak cabinets. Two particular items caught my eye. One was a copy print announcing the American Declaration of Independence using Caslon Old Face and the other was an original specimen of printing types by Caslon themselves. I was obviously in a place of great print history and beyond the doors to the showroom I was looking forward to what they had done to keep up their tradition in print finishing. Over the years the company has invested in quality and in 1987 Caslon purchased Adana (a letter press machine manufacturer) bringing them firmly back into the letterpress machinery and supplies business once again. FOILING FUSING MACHINES: The first piece of equipment I was shown was a manual-foiling machine, FoilTech FT-10, which is their entrylevel machine that transfers foil over any solid areas of the image. I’ve seen this back at the QPP head office as Colourfast use Caslon kit daily in our own print business. It was extremely easy to set up and can be used for wedding invitations, cards, business cards; letterheads — the list goes on. The Foiltech’s brothers are the FT12, FT12F with an automatic feed, which takes stock up to a maximum sheet width of 310mm at a stock of 500gsm per sheet. The final machine in this range was the FoilTech Standard, which can take up to 370mm wide stock with up to three colours of foil on each pass. Not only can you foil images but on
the same equipment you can place a clear foil over the top of a colour image to produce a more dense and glossy effect that not only makes the finished result more permanent but also adds a gloss lustre that is similar to spot varnishing and if you were wondering, there are a total of 26 foils to choose from gold metallic to gold hologram. I was already wondering how many different designs and applications you can put this to, to differentiate yourself from your competitor. ADHESIVE MACHINES: We moved on to the Maxit adhesive machine that applies a very thin coat of wax that will stick to just about any surface including brick, wood and metal. What surprised me was that it never dries out and the adhesive did not transfer to the user’s fingers, which kept everything clean and tidy. Unlike some mounting sprays it is acid free, non-toxic and odour free and will not damage the product it is stuck to. This is great for adhering digital prints, hard covers, duplexed items, invitations and book blocks. Following on, was the Rollatag Cold adhesive Coater that will permanently bond card together, and can be used for extra thick card
that cannot go through printers. This is ideal for business cards or greeting cards and delivers a quality feel to the product; the ideas of what you can do with this machine are limitless. The latest trend is for ‘sandwiching’ colour card in business cards — you will have seen these — now you can make up a few rounds for yourselves. BUSINESS CARD CUTTERS AND DIGITAL FINISHING EQUIPMENT: Finally I saw the Zip 10M card cutter/slitter which can finish 100 business cards per minute and the Zip21 which can finish 158 cards per minute — both with a maximum thickness of 400gsm. I am aware there are many products like this on the market but the simplicity, size and mobility of this product made it stand out from other card slitters I have seen. Overall they have eight different types of finishing equipment from card cutters/slitters to machines that score, perforate, crease, hole punch and can also emboss and cut round corners. Speeds of up to 384 finished cards a minute on the Zip-TS2L and the RAS Right Angle slitter than can do a staggering 6000 sheets per hour. So whether you are looking
for a small business card cutter or something a little bigger Caslon has a great range to choose from.
NICK’S NOTES TO SHARE ALL machines are built like mini tanks that are simple to use and require no daily or monthly maintenance. The overall footprint is small, as some printers just don’t have the space for large equipment anymore. If you are looking at investing in any new equipment that will give your business that extra edge over your competitor or want to offer your customer something a little different than before then I would strongly recommend you take a look at the full range of Caslon equipment which can do the same as some larger machines, but importantly, at a fraction of the cost and the space. A good fit for many of our quick print professional frontline print businesses. I would suggest that if any readers would like to see some tactile results then please send David some of your media and mounting material and they will coat it, foil it and return it to you. Visit: www.caslon.co.uk, email: david@caslon.co.uk or telephone: 01727 852211.

Electrify a campaign with the Electra Ballpen FOLLOWING the recent acquisition of the latest laser engraving technology, the best-selling Electra Ballpen range can now be personalised with 360° peripheral laser engraving. Traditionally, laser engravers perform line-of-sight marking on round metal pens, typically yielding a limited circumferential engraved height of between 6mm and 10mm. In this process the pen remains static and the laser beam moves through its X-Y axes to engrave a limited rectangular area. Imagine if an addition Z axis is then added to rotate the pen in very small increments so the effective line-of-sight becomes the entire barrel area once the process has completed its cycle, you would open up endless engraving possibilities
around the entirety of the pen barrel. Thankfully, recent technological advancements are allowing the laser head to communicate with the stepper motor driving the Z axis with an accuracy unheard of previously. Combined with the unique positioning of the chrome rings on the barrel of the Electra Ballpen, this pinpoint accurate technology offers endless
engraving possibilities around the entirety of the pen barrel. All lines in the Electra Ballpen range are made of sleek aluminium with an anodised finish and feature a stylish chrome trim. The Electra-i features a stylus at the top of the pen and a contemporary chrome trim while the Electra Touch has a touch nib which can be used as a stylus when the refill is retracted. The original Electra Ballpen is available in twelve attractive colours while the Electra Rollerball can be ordered in bespoke colours as well as the standard silver colourway. New Summa F Series F2630 FOLLOWING its global launch at FESPA this year, Nottingham-based distributor ArtSystems has announced they have introduced the heavyweight Summa F-Series F2630 flatbed cutter to the UK. Big brother to the renowned F1612 cutter and much more competitively priced than other brand products of similar size on the market, the F2630 enables sign-makers and print providers to process even larger media and also creates the possibility to process two media rolls at once on the roll support system. With a working area of 2650mm x 3050mm it also has a wide set of tools and modules, plus those already featured on the F1612. This means high details in thin films can be cut with the kiss cutting tools; cut-out tools are suitable for all
kinds of plastics and thin cardboards, whereas oscillating tools (in combination with creasing wheels and v-cut knifes) will handle cardboard and foamboards perfectly. On top of that a 1kW router is available for hard board material up to 25mm thickness, such PVC, acrylic, wood or aluminium boards. The working surface of more than eight square metres is split up into 12 vacuum zones, each of which can be automatically switched on or off individually. This way small as well as big boards, sheets or rolls can be processed. Moreover, by using the front and rear zones alternating, tandem mode leads to significant increases in productivity. With the tandem mode the active working area on the flatbed can be divided into front and back processing areas, which enables the user
to load and unload material on one end of the table whilst cutting material on the other end of the table. This will avoid idle periods during the processing of material, adding significant value to the overall workflow. www.artsystems.co.uk

Allprint installs first Epson SurePress in Ireland ALLPRINT Design & Print has become the first company in Ireland to install an Epson SurePress L-4033AW seven colour digital label press with white ink and variable data option. The investment, alongside an Omega Digicon digital finishing machine, is key to the company’s expansion into the short-run digital label printing operation and also allows it to maximise output on existing flexo presses. Allprint Design & Print is a company specialising mainly in self-adhesive label manufacture, supplying a diverse market with a wide range of customers from small start-ups to well-established multinationals. The company offers its clients the complete package, from initial concept to label design, and manufacture of finished product. “With on-site control we are able to provide what is required by our clientele — a fast, efficient and reliable service,” says Norman Malcomson, MD, Allprint Design & Print. “To maintain this service we needed an answer to short-run label production and if possible, free production capacity on our larger presses. Having tried a few small-run printers for some time and not progressing, it was a visit to IPEX that started the ball rolling in the right direction.” With the increasing demand for short-run jobs, on first inspection at the exhibition the Epson SurePress L-4033AW inkjet digital label press seemed to be the best solution for Allprint. Delivering exceptional print quality and a wide gamut colour reproduction on a large variety of standard and specialised label substrates, without the need for pre-treatments and coatings. With further trials and a site visit to see the press in a working environment, Allprint’s investment in the SurePress L-4033AW label press was agreed and it was installed along with an Omega Digicon digital finishing machine. Both fitted nicely into the company’s existing premises with a surprisingly small footprint.
Now installed for six months, the Surepress L-4033AW press has integrated nicely into Allprint’s existing set-up and lived up to expectations — and more. It has improved lead times on short-run jobs, with no plates required, and has enabled same day production
using existing tooling on the Digicon for those emergencies. The SurePress has also had a major impact on production capacity of Allprint’s other presses, leaving more room for what these presses are made for — larger runs. www.epson.co.uk
New Scanning Spectrophotometer from EFI EFI has announced a new colour chart reading spectrophotometer that automates and streamlines the press profiling process in Fiery Driven digital colour production printing. The new EFI ES-6000 scanning network spectrophotomer is fully integrated into EFI Fiery digital front end workflows. As a result, print professionals can quickly and easily update profiles and verify colour to ensure the best possible colour output from their digital presses. The EFI ES-6000 can read thousands of colour patches in minutes and accommodates M0, M1 and M2 measurement illumination conditions. Graphic arts professionals can manage the complexities of measuring optically brightened substrates now commonly used in digital printing environments. The ES-6000 spectrophotometer, supplied through EFI’s relationship with X-Rite, and EFI Fiery Color Profiler Suite are integrated together to offer nextgeneration digital print colour measurement. Using the spectrophotomer
on a print shop’s local access network makes it ideal for efficient colour management of multiple print engines in a single shop location. Multiple people can use Fiery Color Profiler Suite to print colour patch pages that can be fed into the ES-6000 in any order for automated measurement. The ES-6000 then automatically communicates results back to the correct user to enable efficient completion of the colour management or verification process. Users gain a greater level of speed, automation and accuracy in digital press profiling over handheld spectrophotometers in multi-press EFI Fiery production workflows. Available now worldwide, the ES-6000 spectrophotometer can read up to 2,500 patches on a single A3/tabloid sheet in just 10 minutes. EFI Fiery users can spend less time profiling their digital press fleets by using the device to conduct press configuration tasks automatically with no setup or IT involvement. NFIGO SOFTWARE IS a first-time participant at London Calling Focus, while Fujifilm will be returning after a year’s gap to show its thermo moulding technology. Other partners are Renz, Apogee — which recently acquired Balreed Antalis, Vivid and Neopost. Workflows showing personalised applications using a variety of processes that are precise, automated and attractive to the eye will be the mainstay of London Calling at historic Sunbeam Studios, Ladbroke Hall, North Kensington, from 3-4 November, which is celebrating its seventh year. Duplo will be demonstrating how its continual focus on investing in its customer service and support along with the development of nextgeneration products helps provide customers with integrated solutions and increased profitability. In line with Duplo’s enviable reputation as a friendly and customer-focused company, the spotlight will also be on business networking and fun throughout the two days of London Calling Focus. Additional “Bond-ing” takes place at an 007 themed invitation-only VIP night inspired by the classic James Bond films. All the action takes place at historic Sunbeam Studios, the UK’s first purpose-built car and factory showroom now regarded as one of the foremost photographic studios and event spaces in London. London Calling Focus will also be supported by the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF) and will be promoting PrintIT, the nationwide
education initiative teaching young people about the print and allied industries. Sarah Crumpler, Duplo UK’s Marketing Manager, said: “London Calling is a truly unique event that is defined by our customers, for our customers as well as the wider industry. The aim of London Calling is to provide ideas and inspiration behind business growth, as well as opportunities for networking. ” Sign up for London Calling Focus by visiting: www.duplouk.com SUNBEAM STUDIOS THE building is home to Sunbeam Studios and regarded as one of the foremost photographic studios and event spaces in London. It was originally opened in 1903 as the Talbot Works and was the first purpose-built car factory and show-room in the UK. A world record for 100 miles in one hour was set in 1913 by a Talbot built at this site. Through this achievement the driver, Percy Lambert, became the fastest man ever over
this distance — on land, sea, or air, for which he earned the status of celebrity and national hero. Based at Ladbroke Hall, W10, it’s a place that not only produced record breaking cars but was used by Winston Churchill as his experimental warfare establishment in the World War One and is also the place where the first anti-aircraft brigade was established in 1915. www.sunbeamstudios.com

A blueprint for the future
As the newest addition to the UK calendar, The Print Show is causing plenty of buzz across the industry. QPP talk to Rob Fletcher, Page Tuck and Chris Davies who tell us what visitors can expect at the event and consider how it can help UK print companies build for the future.
S
TARTING UP A new exhibition or event in the print industry is no easy task, with many shows having come and gone over the years. In order to make a success of a new event, organisers have to ensure that it addresses key trends in the market and meets the requirements of a demanding industry. Taking place for the first time this year, The Print Show looks set to do exactly this, with an expansive programme of exhibitors and speakers lined up. Running from October 13th to 15th at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Birmingham. With a host of big names from the market already on board as exhibitors, and the support of key trade bodies from the industry, the event is set for an impressive debut.
SOMETHING DIFFERENT EVENT director, Chris Davies has been busy travelling the length of the UK over the past year securing the support of not only exhibitors, but also trade bodies, industry media, and print companies themselves. Speaking about what the show can offer to visitors, Davies says the event has been designed like no other as it addresses the entire print market - rather than certain sections like other shows. “The reason behind the show is quite simple; the UK print industry does not have a dedicated exhibition and, to be honest, a market as big as ours both needs and deserves one,” Davies explains, adding: “Having attended print events in the UK for many years, I can honestly say The Print Show will be something completely different. “When you see the likes of Ricoh, KBA, Konica Minolta and Manroland Sheetfed on the floorplan, there’s no doubting how much some of the market’s biggest players value our show,” Davies says, adding: “After all, if they didn’t think it was going to be a success or was needed, they wouldn’t have committed to actually exhibiting at the show. “We’ve also got the likes of the British Association for Print and Communication (BAPC) and the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF) on board, as well as industry-specific organisations
such as Print Power and Two Sides. We’ve also managed to secure a number of key media partners, including your good selves at QPP and thank them for supporting the show with extensive coverage before, during and after the doors have opened.
JEWEL IN THE CROWN Delving into what exactly the event will offer, marketing manager Page Tuck outlines the extensive feature programme that will greet visitors on their arrival at the NEC. Designed with the UK industry in mind, Page says the event’s many features will address the needs of all those in attendance. “What we have done is set up expert consultants in the top six diversification areas open to commercial printers. Visitors can walk up to any one of these experts and have a free consultation about how they can gain access to certain markets.” The markets that will feature in the Diversification Zone include ‘Industrial and Commercial Print’, which will cover a whole host of print and allow visitors to learn about upsizing their business to one that operates on a more industrial scale. Other sectors to be put under the microscope include ‘Textile Printing’, a market that includes work such as soft signage and textile work, as well as the ever-popular ‘Large-Format Print’ market that boasts a whole range of work such as exhibition and window graphics, in addition to trade printing services. The ‘Digital Marketing Services and Crossmedia’ area of the Diversification Zone will demonstrate how traditional printers can transform themselves into a multi-channel service provider, while the ‘Packaging’ section will show opportunities to commercial printers in this market segment. Another key area that will feature in the dedicated zone is ‘Product and Service Diversification’, with visitors able to learn about how they can partner with a trade service supplier to build up a certain part of their business before investing in their own kit.
CELEBRATING PRINT CULTURE Aside from the dedicated Diversification Zone, Page also draws attention to the ‘Business Seminar Theatre’, which will feature a host of special speakers from all corners of the industry. As well as representatives from the BAPC and BPIF, the area will feature sessions from the likes of The Print Coach, Nick Devine, who will tackle sales during the second day of the show, as well as Matthew Parker from Print Champion, and Jonathan Tame from Print Power and Two Sides. Elsewhere, the ‘Proskills Zone’ will serve as the specialist education area of the show, with more than 300 students set to attend to find out more about what the industry can offer to them in terms of careers. Page notes: “We’ll be running special tours around the show for students who come along in an effort to show off the various careers in our industry. The Print Show will give them a good opportunity to find out exactly what is on offer.” In addition, the ‘Software Theatres’ will allow visitors to find out how to get the best out of Quark, Adobe, and Corel during production, with on-site training to be provided to those in attendance. Page is also keen to highlight a special zone that has been entitled ‘Traditional Print Masterclasses’, where visitors can catch a glimpse of some of print’s best technology and processes from years gone by. She expands: “This is something we are particularly proud of; we will have three traditional print providers running historic pieces of machinery, such as Colombia presses from the 1800s, Albion presses, and 1800s rolling presses. They will be producing historic print workflows from the 1700s and 1800s, showing visitors how print was produced back in the day. “It’s a bit of fun and people can get involved and use machinery with help from the staff. There will also be a museum-style exhibit of the history of print in the UK by St Bride Foundation. We want to celebrate the culture of print in the UK and show off the magnificent history of our industry.”

The machine demands a sacrifice
Science fiction writers, or at least the very best of them, have an uncanny knack of anticipating the future, albeit in an apparently alien form or time zone. Martin Christie says sometimes the cloak of fantasy hides a very perceptive comment on a possible reality.
B
ACK IN THE 1940s Isaac Asimov, in one of his many short stories, introduced the basic laws of robotics by which future intelligent machines would be guided. Even if you haven’t read Asimov, you may have seen the more recent Will Smith film, I Robot, based on one of the stories, although the movie tends to concentrate more on the action than the philosophy. Bearing in mind Asimov was writing before the computer, the robot represents any thinking device created by man as an aid but which could potentially become a threat. The first law of robotics was that a robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm, and this principle was to be built into the electronic brain cells as an essential and irrevocable function. Although writers like Asimov and George Orwell were warning of the possible misuse of science, overall there was a general optimism that the developing technologies would be a benefit to mankind, despite the risks. Decades later, the view became more sanguine, as in the bleak 80s world of Blade Runner the robots come back to stalk their creators. Either way, predictions assumed a positive thinking attitude in artificial intelligence which has yet to become a reality. We may think at times that computers or printers are conspiring against us, but actually they are just performing the functions they have been programmed or instructed to do. Doing it well or doing it badly makes no difference to their peace of electrical mind. Whether you praise them or curse them will make no difference to their temperament or work ethic. Unless they have an actual fault, often it is
an error in instruction that causes a failure, either directly by the operator or in the course of operation. The machines, regardless of their technical brain power, are effectively neutral. They are only intelligent to a degree, not smart. They can only do what they are told, not anticipate what you actually want. And herein lies the hidden danger: not that the machines have out-witted the humans, but that people begin to allow them to do their thinking for them, and therefore gradually abandon a naturally inquisitive mind for one that simply presses buttons and accepts the consequences. Although the computer age is relatively new in human years, we are already in the middle of the third generation of users. The first, a little sceptical of the novelty, and unsure of its possibilities. The second more confident as a user but aware of its’ limitations. The third just seems to take it all for granted, as if nothing could possibly go wrong. But as we know on a regular basis, anything that can go wrong will go wrong, as much in the computer age as it was in the mechanical age, and no doubt was right way back to the stone age. In fact we would never have made the progression from one to the other without an ability to question the status quo. A computer could undoubtedly design the perfect wheel, but it could never have invented it. Why would it? There is a very real danger that people evidently assign more foresight and creativity to what is still — however fast and powerful — a purely functional machine, whatever practical task it is applied to. And that’s where science fiction meets the
real world, and the digital print environment is only a small part of the changing attitude to technology which sees a reliance on equipment and connections as stable and reliable when in fact they may be quite tenuous. You’ve only got to have a minor interruption in an internet connection to experience the chaos and confusion that can result in a working business. But the communication between one computer and another, or between one computer and a printer can cause similar problems on a smaller scale simply because they are unexpected. The latter is now a daily occurrence, much like delays on the train time table or on the bus route. But unlike disruption to commuting, which is accepted, although grudgingly, as inevitable, a technology hiccup is often greeted with complete astonishment. Customers who might wait patiently on a station platform, or behind a queue at a bank, will start ticking at the print counter if their job takes more than a few seconds to produce. This is because inconvenience in the real world is understandable, however bizarre the excuse — “badger on the line at Coulsdon Junction” for example. In the cyber world it is not, and this is the price people pay for allowing an anonymous device to do their thinking, calculating, creating and communicating for them. This is the sacrifice to the machine. Before ‘instant’ communication people had to physically talk to each other to explain what they meant. Now they reply on potentially random binary mathematics to translate ever more complex problems, and expect consistent results without any understanding of the processes involved. It is this third generation of users that is becoming a common customer at the print shop counter, or over email, and is causing more miscommunication because of that lack of comprehension. So much so that you have to almost completely revise any formula of pre-flight instructions to explain what ‘print ready’mmeans. An image downloaded from a Google search does not constitute proper artwork even if it does look nice on the phone. Unfortunately, by the same reasoning, it becomes harder to quantify a professional service when everyone who has a ‘smart’ device considers him or herself a designer, an artist or a photographer. It seems an inevitable equation that as the machines get smarter the owners get dumber. Talk of smart machines brings us round to the subject of speeding up processing, whether
OCTOBER 2015 | QUICK PRINT PRO | DIGITAL IMAGING | 23
upgrading computers, network or printers, and the subject of just how much computing power you need at your disposal. I have been trying to research the optimum specification for a modern print room but there are obviously so many variations in size, customer base and production, that it is not a simple solution. The most recent upgrades for most studios will have been the move up from the Windows XP operating system to whichever option has been chosen, plus the move to a subscription cloudbased solution with Adobe. That’s not even taking account of upgrading printers, adding network connections, and many more progressive actions that will affect the ultimate performance of the system overall. Unless you have a resident IT wizard on site — one who understands all the unique variations, and their implications — it’s unlikely that you will get a lot of real help in terms of advice. That’s because the experts as such tend to be experts in their own field, rather than the overall operation of a working digital print outlet with all its complex connections, developed inevitably completely unplanned. It’s very difficult to plan when you can’t anticipate the results of fast moving technology, and constantly moving demand. As recorded in previous columns even IT based companies can be caught out by changing times, and of course there are financial restraints, and consequences of committing funds in the wrong direction. All of the software and hardware providers have internet advice which can be more or less helpful, and of course with the aid of a search engine, you can find more specific topics. But generally the advice is specific to that particular product, and not how it behaves in context with others. You can find minimum requirements for processor and memory to run Adobe CC for example, or Windows 7, but not much advice on what you will really need when you have all of them open and operating at full steam as is often the case in a busy working day. The one truth that seems to be simple is that the machines are greedy, and that however much power you throw at them, they will gladly eat it up. They can retain more information, remember more links, retrieve things you probably wanted to trash, and store other things in hidden places that gradually build up a potentially massive cache of redundant files. Because they can do more, they will do more, and it all uses up the resources available to a smaller or larger degree, so good housekeeping becomes more vital. Downloads from email or servers can build up if the full sized originals are
vivid-online.com
kept, then there will be print files created from the originals, plus any other versions you’ve decided to keep just in case. Then there’s back up, which may be going on automatically on some systems. This fail-safe is all well and good for the individual user who is not multi-tasking, but a busy print shop will be processing dozens or files daily, so the build up of traffic and duplication can soon become immense. Not only is the amount of traffic increasing, but the size of the individual items is growing exponentially. Like the computers, because they can access faster processors and create bigger files, customers will do so. But because they don’t understand or control the process, they may send you a file that is way too big or frustratingly be hopelessly too small. Intel founder Gordon Moore predicted way back in the 1970s that computing power, and processing capability would double every two years, and that has proved to be a reliable projection even forty years on. But of course while the computers have got faster, the tasks we expect them to do have got bigger, and the timescale in which we expect them to produce a result has got smaller, so while the two don’t actually cancel each other out, there is a proportionate relationship. So even if you upgrade your computer every two years, you still won’t necessarily get ahead of the relentless pace of technology, or at least not by much. You can’t afford to fall behind, but you can’t buy yourself a massive advantage because the work will tend to expand to meet the capabilities. The most cost effective advice is the efficient use of the resources that are available, in terms of good practice in file handling, and saving, to speed up work flow. One of the most common
issues is caused by having multiple files and programmes open all at the same time which obviously slows the whole operation down. There’s always a reluctance — based on experience — not to close a file until you are sure you have finished it or saved in properly. If several people are using the same computer, this problem is obviously compounded as no one knows who has finished with what and tasks minimised to the bottom of the screen may not even be noticed. Identifying the actual size of a file, and using the correct proportions also helps smooth the workflow, especially if the file is excessively large. It may seem obvious, but a lot of people working on mobile devices will not always be aware of dimensions or pixel count because they are not apparent in the information on their screen. From email or download, checking the actual physical size in kilobytes or megabytes is a good initial guide of whether you are going to be wasting working time either manhandling a monster or struggling to make a decent print from a minnow. When saving, it’s a good idea to save the actual print file, if it is going to be needed again. If it’s not going to be needed, like something with a date that will become redundant, then there may be no point saving it. Even if it is saved, unless you have some logical archive system, especially one that others can access, again it’s probably pretty useless using up valuable storage space with items that will likely never see the light of day again. Next month I will show some practical tips on archiving and the efficient use of Adobe software, particularly Photoshop. Something for you to read as the dark nights close in!

Favini: New Majestic Visual Book
FAVINI, a leader in the production of innovative graphic specialties made of natural raw materials (cellulose, algae, fruit and nuts, etc) introduces the new Majestic visual book, entirely taking inspiration from the vibrant colours of peacock feathers. The pages of the new visual book feature images from the historical to the contemporary in order to show a variety of styles, settings and interpretations. Favini exploits the iridescence and metal reflections of the Majestic paper to create printouts of a rare beauty. Artists, photographers and master artisans worldwide have tried to imitate the shimmering reflections of the feathers and to appropriate and interpret the patterns created by the feathers with the typical eye-shaped design. The result is a booklet that fully enhances the surfaces, gleaming and rich in vivid colors, of the Majestic paper line. www.favini.com

AT its Annual General Meeting in July PEFC UK’s Chairman, Hugh Miller OBE announced his retirement. Hugh has been succeeded by long standing Director, Ross Bradshaw. In his farewell report, Hugh commented, “PEFC has made substantial progress and has much to celebrate. In less than two decades, PEFC has gone from an organisation of 11 national certification systems to 38 member countries and it is still growing.” He added that, “Today, two thirds of all certified forests globally are certified to PEFC standards, and more than half of the world’s traded sustainable forest products are being sourced from forests that are certified to PEFC-endorsed standards.” Incoming Chairman, Ross Bradshaw has worked in the paper manufacturing industry for over twenty five years. He began his career by training as a paper maker in Aberdeen. In addition to his role at PEFC UK, Ross is active in a number of industry groups, including The Paper and Board Association and The Stationers Company, The City of London Livery Company for the Communications and Content industries, where he is a Liveryman. Currently, Ross runs his own paper agency business representing a number of speciality paper mills from the USA and Europe, offering bespoke publishing and packaging papers. Ross is PEFC UK’s longest serving director, having joined the Board in 2007. Commending the steady progress that the organisation has experienced under Professor Miller’s chairmanship, Ross said, “PEFC UK has gone from strength to strength under Hugh’s leadership. The number of companies undergoing Chain of Custody certification continues to grow, and the PEFC label is appearing on more and more consumer-facing products. This year we (PEFC UK) are embarking on a new project to encourage more UK forest owners to enter into certification so that they are able to help meet growing market demand for certified raw materials.” For more information visit: www.pefc.co.uk

ANTALIS, the visual communications and packaging solutions merchant, has become an official partner of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21) and will supply all of the paper used for printed documents during the course of this major international event. In keeping with the event’s theme and Antalis’ commitment to eco-responsibility, the paper used for stationery, posters, handouts and all other documentation, will have a 5-star rating under the Green Star System** i.e. be recycled and carry the EU Ecolabel. A milestone in climate change The 21st session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21/CMP11), otherwise known as “Paris 2015”, will be held in France from November 30th to December 11th. The objective of the conference is ambitious but crucial: the adoption of a binding universal climate agreement to limit the increase in global temperature to below two degrees Celsius. Businesses contribute directly or indirectly to global warming and are therefore essential stakeholders in the design of effective solutions. It is incumbent on each of them to conduct their business activities in a responsible manner and ensure their environmental impact is reduced to a minimum. As a leading paper merchant, Antalis fully takes on board this responsibility and also aims to make sure that the voice of the paper industry is heard as it is often wrongly accused of being one of the key causes of deforestation and therefore of global warming. PRINT and paper is a highly sustainable form of communication in today’s digital society. Despite this, there are still misconceptions that it is wasteful, detrimental to the environment and responsible for deforestation. More worrying is the misunderstanding that digital communication is more environmentally friendly, which is not always the case. To address these misconceptions, and to better inform and educate consumers, businesses and the public at large, ‘Two Sides’, a global initiative to promote the sustainability and attractiveness of print and paper, has published a series of 11 fact sheets to address a wide array of environmental and social issues. The comprehensive fact sheets cover the most common areas of misunderstanding, ranging from the real environmental impact of electronic communication, to the sustainability of paper-based printed products, as well as tackling the important role that print and paper plays in literacy and learning. “In recent years the paper and print industries have taken significant steps in managing their environmental impacts”, explains Martyn Eustace, Managing Director of Two Sides. “Over the last 20 years forests in Europe have grown by 42 million acres – an area twice the size of Portugal – and the European paper recycling rate is at an all-time-high of 72%. Our role is to educate consumers and businesses that print and paper is a remarkable and sustainable means of communication. It is also important not to forget that alternative digital communications have environmental impacts too.” twosides.info/Fact-Sheets Members of Two Sides can also personalise the fact sheets; creating a powerful addition to their own sustainability materials. www.twosides.info

QPP – making a seasonal song and dance about new products for Christmas
Christmas with that Magic Touch IT’S that time again, and I believe some people have started or even finished their Christmas shopping. And then does anybody actually enjoy wrapping the presents? Luckily for us, and with a little bit of help from our friends at The Magic Touch it is possible to personalise gift boxes, so when the queue at your counter waiting for their Christmas cards to be printed ( and at the same time complaining that they have all that wrapping to do), why not suggest you make them some gift boxes. Using your existing heat press, soft pad and the CPM 6.2 or 6.4 transfer papers, images, photos or logos can be printed in full colour onto the flat silver surface of the boxes. Once decorated the box can be easily formed and fixed using double sided adhesive tape. The boxes when printed can remain flat to enable them to be posted economically and reduce any potential damage in transit to the end user who can then add the desired contents. All three versions are perfect for the traditional corporate gift sectors, the bottle box in particular enables the customer to brand and personalise to maximum effect. The recipient may drink the contents, but they will always keep the box. Both the small and medium size have a multitude of applications including wedding cake, jigsaws, lingerie, t-shirts, jewellery, soaps, cosmetics, sweets and chocolate or that secret special something! The bottle version accommodates wine, spirits and champagne for all year round occasions such as birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, awards or recognition etc. www.themagictouch.co.uk

Print on beer HP has announced that Bud Light adopted HP digital print technology to produce 200,000 unique, limited-edition Festival cans available at 2015 Mad Decent Block Party music festival events, making Bud Light not only the first beer, but the first brand in the U.S. to use HP SmartStream Mosaic for mass customisation. In celebration of the music, culture and artistry the Mad Decent Block Party festival is known for, the U.S.’s best-selling and most popular beer brand sought to capture the energy of the summer music scene through this first-ever custom packaging campaign for the U.S. market. Leveraging an HP Indigo WS6800 Digital Press and HP SmartStream Mosaic, 31 designs were transformed into more than 31 million possible graphics, ultimately creating 200,000 unique can designs, with no two cans exactly alike. These special edition Festival cans are currently available at Mad Decent Block Party events through September in cities across the U.S. and Canada. “This project would not have been possible without HP digital print technology, which allowed us to experiment and create an original experience with America’s favourite beer,” explained Valerie Toothman, VP of Innovation, Anheuser-Busch. “Today’s consumer is seeking unique, customised
Print on wine
A unique new technology from Avery Dennison has solved a longstanding problem for wine producers who want to use uncoated bottle labels. Uncoated paper facestocks, with a matt finish are a popular way of achieving a premium bottle ‘look’, but they have always had one major disadvantage: they turn grey when exposed to water. Launching at Labelexpo 2015, the new Aqua Opaque solution resists greying and opens up new design possibilities. Andrew Crawford, vice president of marketing at Avery Dennison Materials Group Europe, said that wine producers can now be offered an uncoated paper that stays white longer, and which is suitable for neck labelling as well as the main bottle label: “Some uncoated papers provide a very valuable decoration option, but they can lose as much as 50% of their opacity in the presence of moisture when used with a conventional adhesive – and that makes the bottle label look grey, and with uneven colouring. This new approach protects uncoated papers for up to two hours, maintaining their opaque white appearance. It’s a particularly important option for makers of white, rosé and sparkling wines where maintaining a premium brand image in the ice bucket is essential.” The Aqua Opaque solution doesn’t require an extra film layer or thicker paper, and it uses an emulsion adhesive to retain the highest performance levels on conventional presses. The result is a label that is no stiffer than a standard label and can be applied easily to bottle necks. Andrew Crawford said that changing to the new technology is quick and simple: “It converts in the same way as a conventional emulsion adhesive, so there is no barrier to adoption. It simply replaces an existing labelling solution.” Learn more at www.averydennison.com.

Consumer reactions at this summer’s Mad Decent Block parties are proving that custom graphics are indeed an impactful and relevant way to elevate a consumer’s experience with the Bud Light brand.” “Customisation on a global scale is the next frontier for brands,” said Doris Brown-McNally, worldwide brands business development manager, HP. “HP digital print offers the ability to quickly create and produce millions of unique designs, and Bud Light is the latest brand to leverage our mass versioning technology to craft a custom and shareable experience.” More information about HP Indigo digital printing technology for labels and packaging is available at www.hp.com/go/indigo

SINCE its launch in January 2012 James Gibbins’ company, exhibitionstands.co.uk, which trades as Stand4, has been steadily growing. As its name suggests, James’ company provides a wide range of exhibition stands and display solutions. He said, “What we aim to do every time is put ourselves in our customer’s shoes. What kind of service would we expect if it was us making the purchase? Then we simplify the ordering and purchasing process. Our customers are busy people and the more we can do to help them the more they appreciate it.” In August 2015 the workshops saw delivery of a Summa F1612 Pro flatbed cutter from CWE Solutions , a reseller for Summa’s UK distributor, ArtSystems. The choice had proved a simple one. James said, “We needed high quality cutting and creasing across a broad portfolio of materials and the only way to meet that need was to bring the facility in-house in an affordable way. “We had seen the Summa in action and we knew it provided really great specifications for the money. It was a no-brainer to make the investment and it has already proven its worth, especially with regards to the increasing number of bespoke projects we are handling.” The company often has to demonstrate real flexibility with its customers, largely because it doesn’t deal with any specific industry sector. James explains, “One day we might be working with Bulmers Cider and the next with blu, the e-cigarette manufacturer. It is this kind of variety that is driving the increase in bespoke stand and pop-up shop manufacture, and is one of the reasons we needed the Summa F1612. As a result of our investment we have tightened turnaround times and quality control.” James hasn’t limited his company to purely exhibition work, it also has the facility to be a graphic and print provider, including large format printing, laminating and finishing, graphic design and print-ready artwork. It is also involved with 3D design and animation. www.exhibitionstands.co.uk or for CWE Solutions: www.cwesolutions.co.uk.

SINGING FROG A man enters his local bar holding a frog and an iguana. He sets them down on the bar and says to the barman, “I bet you £100 that my frog here can sing any song you can think of.” “Ok,” says the bartender. “How about Hey Jude?” The man whispers something to the frog, and the frog starts singing Hey Jude. “That’s amazing,” says the bartender as he slaps down £100. “I’ll bet you another £100 that my iguana here can do that too.” “Ok, I can believe a frog, but not an iguana. You’re on. Have him sing Bohemian Rhapsody.” The man whispers
something to the iguana and it sings the Bohemian Rhapsody. As the bartender hands over another £100, a salesman comes up and says, “I just saw that and I was amazed. I want to buy your iguana for £1,000” The man said ok, and he exchanged the iguana for the money and the salesman left. The barman said “What are you nuts?! You could have made millions with that iguana!” The man said “Oh, the iguana can’t sing. The frog’s a ventriloquist.”
ADVICE FROM THE TOP Accept that some days you’re the pigeon, and some days you’re the statue. Also, on balance, never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you don’t have a leg to stand on.
NEW MERCEDES A print supplier ‘business development officer’, bought a new Mercedes and was out on the motorway between victims. The top was down, the breeze was blowing through what was left of his hair and he decided to open her up. As the needle jumped up to 80 mph, he suddenly saw flashing blue lights behind him. “There’s no way they can catch a Mercedes,” he thought to himself and opened her up further. The needle hit 90, 100... Then the reality of the situation hit him. “What am I doing?” he thought and pulled over on the hard shoulder. The policeman came up to him and was about to ask what the speed limit was, but instead said, “It’s been a hot day, this is the end of my shift and it’s Friday the 13th. I don’t feel like more paperwork, so if you can give me an excuse for your driving that I haven’t heard before, you can go.” The salesman thinks for a second and says, “Last week my wife ran off with a policeman and I was afraid you were trying to give her back!” “Have a nice weekend,” said the officer.
LUCKY SAUCER A famous art collector is walking through the city when he notices a mangy cat lapping milk from a saucer in the doorway of a store and he does a double-take. He recognises that the saucer is extremely old and very valuable, so he walks casually into the shop and offers to buy the cat for two dollars. The shop owner replies, “I’m sorry, but the cat isn’t for sale. The collector says, “Please, I need a hungry cat around the house to

catch mice. I’ll pay you twenty dollars for that cat.” And the owner says “Sold,” and hands over the cat. The collector continues, “Hey, for the twenty bucks I wonder if you could throw in that old saucer. The cat’s used to it and it’ll save me from having to get a dish.” And the owner says, “Sorry buddy, but that’s my lucky saucer. So far this week I’ve sold sixty-eight cats.”
CONFESSIONS OF A NEC EXHIBITIONIST Fred and Steve are sitting around one afternoon having a beer. After a while Steve says, “If I were to sneak over to your house and make love to your wife while you were off at an exhibition, she got pregnant and had a baby, would that make us related?” Fred crooked his head sideways for a minute, stroked his brow and squinted his eyes thinking real hard about the question. Finally he says, “Well, I don’t know about being related, but it would make us even!!”
NOTICE SEEN IN THE NEC BAR ORDERING DRINKS 1. Please remember to order one drink at a time. We like to run backwards and forwards. It keeps us fit. 2. When ordering a round please make sure you don’t know what you want when you arrive at the bar, we like to stand and wait while you nip backwards and forwards or you shout across the room to find out, although we do generally find that the other people standing at the bar have been waiting “half an hour” and may start moaning; not your problem. 3. Once you have received two drinks please take them back to your table and stay for a quick chat before coming back to pay. We’ll still be waiting, we’re not going anywhere and we’d appreciate the rest. 4. Always order Guiness last. We really want you to stand at the bar

with all your other drinks while it settles and are particularly pleased when we forget about it and have to be reminded to top it up. 5. Never put the money in our hands, we like to pick it up off the bar, especially if it is all change, and in a puddle of beer. 6. Never say “please” or “thank you” it only irritates us. 7. Always wait until you have been told how much the round is before asking for crisps, snacks etc. (When requiring ready-salted crisps please ensure you ask for the full range of flavours available before asking for “plain,” it helps us to learn the stock. 8. When buying a pint for “Bert,” “Tom,” etc, please don’t ask them what they want. Just tell us their name or show us where they are standing because we like to guess and get such a thrill when we get it right. 9. If, upon arriving at the bar, there are people waiting before you, shout up before them. We like to be abused by people who think that they have been served out of turn and it’s usually our own fault. We have the ability to keep track of people as they arrive at the bar, particularly on busy nights, so why not use it. 10. If you have been waiting at the bar for at least two minutes then please heckle us and tell us that you have been waiting for at least half an hour. It keeps us on our toes and we have no idea of the concept of time.
ANYONE UP FOR A GAME OF DARTS? A research programme has just been completed into the contents of a pint of beer and it has been discovered that all beer contains female hormones. This of course explains why after 10 pints of beer you talk a load of nonsense and can’t throw a dart straight! A young man plays a game of darts who has never played before. His first dart hits the double 20. He throws another and hits double 20 again but
