Slam Signs invests in 10-colour Epson SureColor SC-S80600 To boost the capacity and variety of signage products it produces, Slam Signs has invested in a 64-inch Epson SureColor SC-S80600 large format printer. The new printer, supplied by Papergraphics, joins a SureColor SCS40600 which was installed two years ago. Based in St Albans, Slam Signs is headed up by business partners David Jorge and Jodie Banfather. The company provides a complete design and print service, producing a variety of products including vehicle wraps, shop fascias and signage, window graphics, banners, POS and pop-up displays. The company’s new SureColor SC-S80600 features permanent Epson PrecisionCore TFP printheads with variable size ink droplet technology to deliver up to 1440 x 1440 dpi output. It enables Slam Signs to print on a variety of substrates including clear film, vinyl, canvas and photographic paper. “In my view, the SureColor SC-S80600 is probably the best printer on the market today in terms of quality, versatility and engineering,” says David. “The 10-colour UltraChrome GS3 inkset, including metallic, red and white, means we can achieve accurate and consistent colours and hit the majority of Pantone colours. We don’t

need to produce test prints to check colours – they are always spot on which saves us and our customers considerable time. The special red ink really delivers a bright, punchy effect which designers and ad. agencies love.” Alongside its wide variety of signage products, Slam has developed a reputation for its vehicle graphics service. “On average, we wrap about two vehicles a week and the SC-S80600 is the perfect printer for this because of the stunning quality graphics that it produces,” says David. “Vehicle wraps protect body work and are used for advertising and to create fun effects. We have some customers who will re-wrap their car a couple of times a year! While the graphics are long lasting, they like to have a bit of fun.” “The design and build of this printer is impressive,” says David. “Installation and set-up was quick and simple and since then, because it is so reliable, it has been in almost constant use. Wallpaper and wall coverings are growing in popularity as retailers, designers and events firms see the potential and the quality of the results,” he explains. “The advanced autotension control system on the SC-S 80600 prevents substrate stretch and means that we can print drops that align with each other

perfectly. That’s very important.” Phil McMullin, sales manager, Professional Printing Solutions, Epson UK, says: “Slam Sign’s experience with their new printer shows why it has become Europe’s top selling eco-solvent technology in its class. It is a powerful solution for companies looking for technology that delivers quality, productivity, flexibility, ease of use and rapid ROI in one complete package.” www.epson-europe.com

Office Transformation for Deaf Children’s Charity

In line with a national rebrand, the National Deaf Children’s Society has revamped its offices across the UK with a little help from Signs Express. With a combination of exterior signage, wayfinding displays, reception signs and wallpaper graphics, the charity’s offices have been transformed into an energetic, creative space that reflects the passion and devotion of the teams. The National Deaf Children’s Society’s main site in London saw the majority of the work, which was completed by Signs Express (Harlow), experts in rebrands, having carried out numerous projects since their establishment in 1995. Paul Heywood, co-owner of Signs Express (Harlow), stated “It is always an honour to work with charities, but when we saw the designs for the office, we knew this was something a little bit different. With the

combination of colours, materials and types of signage, even the change in the charity’s logo has had a massively positive effect everywhere in the building.” In addition to London, the National Deaf Children’s Society’s offices in Birmingham, Glasgow and Cardiff have also been updated by each of the Signs Express branches in these areas. As a national sign company with 65 centres up and down the UK, the company was able to deliver consistency and excellent service to every project location. Phil Barros, Head of Brand Marketing for the National Deaf Children’s Society, said: “The difference to our office environment has been incredible to see. The fantastic new office environment really showcases our values and will remind staff and visitors of the inspirational deaf children we support every day. The professionalism Signs Express has shown has been faultless and the response of staff across the organisation has been overwhelmingly positive.” Signs Express are experts in all manner of signage, with rebrands and office fit outs a specialism, having conducted them for companies, such as Leaders, Lichfields and Sure Maintenance Group. With branches all over the UK and Ireland, there is always someone there to help you. www.signsexpress.co.uk/Harlow

Online Watkiss solution for new GHP venture Kendal-based Grosvenor House Papers Ltd has completed its first print production line with a Watkiss Powersquare 224 bookletmaker, now integrated and running with a Konica Minolta 2250 BizHub press. GHP is by far the UK’s leading provider of exercise books to schools, delivering over 30 million per year. For some years, GHP relied on overseas production of a standard series of exercise books, but requests for personalisation led MD Keith Young to develop the in-house print production facility. “We decided to begin printing for ourselves in earnest and looked at various options,” he says. “We went for a duplex mono system to cope with the volume, and for finishing, we decided on an inline system.” “The Watkiss element brings a level of quality we couldn’t get any other way,” says Mr Young. “It is very well built and runs seamlessly with the Konica press, but the main benefit is the end product which is better than any alternative we have seen. The square backed books look great and are easy to stack. With some of our smaller books we can produce two-up and then guillotine, plus it is capable of a wide spectrum of book thickness from only a couple of sheets up to over 10mm thick.” The effects of this new in-house print venture have been immediate and very encouraging. “Interest has been very high, there is a big untapped market for us in bespoke products for schools. I can see us investing in more print production equipment in future.” The addition of a print capability is the latest expansion at Grosvenor House Papers which has seen rapid recent growth – staff levels have risen from 32 to 51 over the past two years. The company, now run by the husband and wife team of Keith and Janet

Young, began trading in 1949 selling paper to local businesses but has since grown and diversified. As well as being a major supplier to the education sector it supplies numerous papers and related products to the craft market, both online and through a retail arm. www.watkiss.com

West Port Print & Design buys Ricoh PRO C7110SX This is thanks to being able to print white on coloured invitations, a clear toner to give spot varnish effects and six-page A4 products thanks to the 700mm long sheet ability of the Ricoh PRO C7100SX. Managing director Terry Scanlon says: “The Ricoh machine is producing amazing quality. It is letting us do jobs that we would have had to send out before.” For one local hotel it can produce the stylish folder, printed with white on black, the inside flyers and letter and add A5 card slipped into position and then tied with a ribbon. An in-house studio helps the 34 year old business service a loyal customer base of hotels, restaurants and golf related businesses. Samples of these jobs are pinned up as inspiration in the West Port Print & Design shop where customers come in to order work, check proofs and then pick up jobs. The personal approach helps defend the business against cheap online competition, but he acknowledges that delivery times are becoming shorter. This led Mr Scanlon to investigate replacement for the Xerox Docucolor 250 it has been running. “The quality of a calendar printed on the PRO C7100 that Ricoh showed me was mind boggling. I simply did not believe it was digital print because the quality was so good. “This is the first time I have been so surprised since I saw the CLC1

colour copier back in 1989. I bought one of the first and it was a great success and now the Ricoh is doing the same. “Nobody else in the area can do what we can do. We are printing white on coloured stock which we can’t do with litho; we can spot varnish and print 6pp A4 jobs for venues and folders and with the Fiery Rip we can plan 20 or 25 cards to the sheet in seconds. This is an amazing machine.” Tim Carter, commercial print sales director, at Ricoh suggests “our focus is to help printers recognise how they can extend their range of services and therefore build more value into their offering. West Port is a great example of this where a forward looking organisation, with increasingly demanding work requests, has responded to the challenge and taken this technology platform to innovate for their own specific services. It’s is a perfect partner for Ricoh and the fifth colour Pro C7100SX.” www.ricoh.co.uk

Funky Pigeon invests in Renz supplied Argos F400 Personalised greetings card specialist Funky Pigeon has chosen to streamline production with an Argos F400 “Cold Lamp” UV Coater from Renz. So successful is the installation that the Guernsey operation could add two more to improve workflow and increase efficiency. Explains Grant Bewey, General Manager: “We had a system but that caught fire and so wanted to install a replacement that had strong safety features”. “The Argos came in on our price budget and we are really pleased with it. We have four HP Indigos and while this one runs nearline we are hoping to add two more to run inline. That way we can create a highly flexible process.” Funky Pigeon’s Argos F400 “Cold Lamp” UV Coater is the first in the UK to be equipped with remote diagnostics. The highly flexible flat coating system can run at up to 45m/min or 6,000sph (A3) and can handle a maximum paper width of 400mm. It joins a host of other Renz

supplied wire binding solutions including two MOBI 500 automated wire binders, five ECL 360 electric wire closing machines and five P 500 heavy duty punches. Another consideration was Funky Pigeon’s location: “We work quite remotely and so cannot afford to have any downtime,” states Bewey. “This machine looked to be very reliable. The remote diagnostics capability also offered peace of

mind.” Bewey did consider other systems but said: “We went to Belgium and saw the coater put through its paces. We liked its reliability and the fact it offered a low cost per page. It uses less coating than other systems and because it is cold UV there is no warming up which ensures maximum uptime. Wash up is also minimal which saves a lot of time.” The coater was installed in under

two hours and Bewey says: “We have had no problems with it. It gives a better quality of coating and uses less coater which makes it cost effective. Also, because it is a cold coater, there are no temperature changes for the substrate to react to. As a result, curling is eliminated which improves the final quality.” Funky Pigeon’s total investment, including feeder, vacuum conveyor and jogger was £69,995. www.renz.co.uk

PRO-DESIGN® 15-year anniversary PRO-DESIGN was originally designed for use with laser printers as a top-shelf product for full colour, high quality print applications. Taking full advantage of developments in high-speed inkjet technology, the new PRO-DESIGN now provides the inkjet market with the same outstanding results that professional laser printers have depended on for a decade and a half. The PRO-DESIGN optimisation thus expands options within the professional printing industry, and for desktop and office printer users. The new PRO-DESIGN maintains its leading reputation as a choice for professional digital printing. Blind tests conducted have demonstrated that the product performs as well as previously in laser applications. The key to the PRO-DESIGN optimisation is the application of ColorLok® technology, incorporated into the paper during

manufacturing. When printing occurs, ColorLok® interacts with the ink pigments to “lock” them at the surface. In an inkjet printer, PRO-DESIGN with ColorLok® provides more vivid colours, bolder sharper blacks, faster drying time and reduced smearing. For laser printing, it delivers consistent sheet moisture content and surface smoothness. Standard filler particle size reduces wear and tear on critical printer components. Other benefits include validated surface electrical properties and improved performance to help reduce paper jams and misfeeds. All PRO-DESIGN papers are manufactured on a single machine, ensuring perfect consistency – along with a 99.99% jam-free guarantee. PRO-DESIGN is suitable for all finishing treatments – from stapling, perforating, folding and binding, to laminating, varnishing, sealing and embossing. And to mark the 15th anniversary of its introduction, PRO-DESIGN now comes wrapped inside new, more elegant and modern packaging – showing the True Power of Design. “For 15 years International Paper Europe has continuously invested in the PRO-DESIGN brand. Today they are proud to offer its advantages not just to laser/digital print professionals, but to those in the fast-growing high-speed inkjet segment as well,” Gerald Demets, Commercial Director Paper and Board, European Papers. www.internationalpaper.com

New Mimaki printer/cutters define the future Mimaki has announced the launch of the Mimaki UCJV300-160 and UCJV150-160 rollto-roll LED UV printing and cutting solutions. These two systems add creativity to the production of signs and display graphics, while maintaining Mimaki’s signature affordability and ease of use. In bringing this outstanding solution to market, Mimaki is also introducing a brand new environmentally friendly ink, LUS170, which is guaranteed to ensure vibrant, eyecatching print results. These new printing and cutting systems, representing the future of sign and display graphics production, are expected to be available for customer shipments in the fourth quarter of 2017. “The UCJV Series is available in two models; the four colour UCJV150-160 and the UCJV300160 that can accommodate up to seven ink colours in cost effective one litre bottles,” says Ronald Van den Broek, General Manager Sales at Mimaki Europe. “Each can produce a wide variety of print and cut applications offered by many signage, commercial and packaging print service providers. LED UV curing technology enables PSPs to utilise an expanded range of materials including uncoated print media and many thin film substrates that may be too heat sensitive for latex or solvent high heat fixation systems.” “At Mimaki, we work hard to continuously bring innovative solutions to our customers and these two new systems certainly meet that objective,” continues Van den Broek, Mimaki’s exclusive distributor, Hybrid Services, will host the UK and Irish debut of the machine at The Print Show from 11th-13th October at the International Centre in Telford. The company’s National Sales Manager, John de la Roche heralds the machine’s potential, “This new printer/cutter really does define the future for sign and graphics production; the application opportunities are endless and creative professionals will reap enormous benefit,” he states. “By harnessing Mimaki’s unrivalled experience across all inkjet printing technologies, we’re delivering a printer that sets incredible new benchmarks.” One graphic — two views — Mimaki states that print professionals will be constrained only by their imagination with the new printers, with features such as four layer day / night printing offering ‘one graphic — two views’. Available on the UCJV300-160, this process offers an enhanced print capability that allows designers to build layered, transformative graphics for backlit applications. “This process gives print companies the opportunity to offer a unique product,” states de la Roche. “It’s possible to produce a dynamic graphic that morphs its image or colour scheme depending on the light source — a distinctive capability that enables print companies to produce high impact, high margin

output while maintaining low operational costs and reduced production time.” Integrated Cutting — The new UCJV Series features integrated cutting functionality which is capable of delivering volume production of labels, decals, window clings, floor graphics, POP displays, vehicle markings, packaging, prototypes and more in a single unit. Additionally, UV ink technology prevents common problems such as film separation and other issues related to post-cutting that can occur with solvent and latex inks. Prints from the Mimaki UCJV Series are instantly cured at even the highest production speeds, allowing users to print rapidly and immediately move to the finished product, unlike other technologies that require slower production to accommodate for drying time or out-gassing. For many jobs; instant drying, high scratch resistant UV printing can also eliminate the need for additional finishing like laminating, enabling print companies to reduce cycle time while benefiting from further cost savings. Adding value with white ink — Combining white and coloured inks on the UCJV300-160 model adds value to applications that utilise transparent or semi-opaque films. Compared to alternative inks such as solvent and latex, UV-curable inks deliver greater opacity with less ink consumption per square metre of coverage, while maintaining image vibrancy and density. High opacity white ink also facilitates block-out printing within a single print, enabling print companies to easily and efficiently create window graphics that can be viewed differently from either side, such as a ‘Push / Pull’ door sign. These features ensure higher throughput, reduced waste, and perfectly registered double-sided graphics with lower overhead costs per print. New RasterLink6 plus RIP software —

The new UCJV Series printers will ship with updated RasterLink6 plus RIP software. This new, feature-rich version of the popular Mimaki RasterLink RIP software includes an ID Cut function to make printing and cutting easier and faster. The barcode, read by the registration mark sensor on the UCJV printer/cutter, contains cutting and rotation information allowing the UCJV to automate the cutting process. This function is particularly useful when running nested print-cut jobs, as the cutter continuously reads the data for both single and combined jobs. Mimaki RasterLink6 plus software also includes a FineCut plug-in for Adobe Illustrator, allowing a print preview for four layer printing that enables operators to preview the transition day / night effect before printing. RasterLink6 plus now also supports PDF 1.5 and above. Core Technologies — The new UCJV Series printer/cutters feature a range of Mimaki Core Technologies that deliver exceptional print quality and continuous productivity. Mimaki’s Advanced Pass System 4 (MAPS4) utilises an advanced algorithm pattern to reduce visible banding. Variable Dot Printing uses smaller drops to produce smoother gradations, while larger drops produce uniform solids and Waveform Control uses finely tuned frequencies for each ink’s specific gravity and viscosity to precisely shape and place individual drops. Mimaki Circulation Technology (MCT) continuously agitates the white inks to prevent settling and two features; Nozzle Check Unit (NCU) which monitors nozzle outages and automatically activates a series of recovery functions and Nozzle Recovery System (NRS) which automatically assigns operational nozzles when an outage is detected, ensure optimum print quality is maintained. www.hybridservices.co.uk

New Océ VarioPrint 6000 Canon has launched the new Océ VarioPrint 6000 TITAN series of cut-sheet monochrome production presses. The technology has been developed to help Print Service Providers (PSPs) who operate in the commercial, publishing and transactional segments to produce high quality black and white prints, at increased speeds and using a wider selection of media weights and formats. The new TITAN series presses build on the wellestablished Océ VarioPrint 6000 platform, which set a new bar for monochrome digital production when it was first launched a decade ago. Its unique Gemini Instant Duplex Technology is still unmatched to this day. Supporting volumes of up to 10 million A4 size impressions per month, the new presses are ideally suited for producers of commercial print materials, books and transactional documents, as well as large in-plants. The Océ VarioPrint 6000 TITAN series comes in three versions to meet specific customer needs — Standard/TP(Transactional Print)/MICR — and has a range of finishing options including booklet-making, perfect binding, tape binding, die punching, trimming and offers an open Document Finishing Device (DFD) Interface for further connectivity to compatible 3rd party finishers on demand. The Océ VarioPrint 6000 TITAN series represents a substantial redesign of the press, with an ultra-robust steel body to support customers’ industrial production requirements, facilitate maintenance and maximise press uptime. Following on from its predecessor, the VarioPrint 6000+ series, the increased maximum running speed of 328 A4 images per minute (ipm) in perfecting mode translates to a potential of over 30,000 additional images, in one week, in one shift operation. Four models are available to meet different speed requirements (VarioPrint 6180, 6220, 6270 and 6330 ), with the option for customers using the lower speed models to purchase temporary licences for increased speed to handle short-term or seasonal production peaks. Increased productivity is also supported by extended functionality in

the TITAN series’ PRISMAsync print server v7, which allows for advanced job scheduling for up to eight hours to enable unattended printing. Further tools such as PRISMAsync Remote Manager, Remote Control App for smart devices and the new PRISMAlytics Dashboard cloud service boost productivity by enabling remote management and monitoring of multiple engines. Windows 10 base, user authentication, and configurable UI are just some of the features that contribute to device security. The new Océ VarioPrint 6000 TITAN series presses are optimised for the broadest range of media in the series’ history, designed to help print service providers to extend their applications range and access new commercial opportunities. The new TITAN Light Weight Media (LWM) Option with LWM Air Guide Technology enables printing on substrates as light as 45 gsm, opening up multiple new product avenues for users, for example in applications such as legal documentation, specialist publishing and multilanguage product and pharmaceutical inserts. The new Océ VarioPrint 6000 TITAN series presses generate virtually no ozone emissions or waste toner, and their energy consumption is calculated to be 30% less than other machines in their category, helping customers to minimise running costs while supporting a healthy operator environment. www.canon.co.uk

Ricoh expands print diversity with Neon Pink toner Ricoh has launched Neon Pink toner to enhance the creative possibilities for a wide range of print from posters and invitations to ticketing and advertising. These and other eye-catching capabilities will be on show at PRINT 17, Chicago, September 10-14 followed by Labelexpo, Brussels, September 25-8. The Neon Pink toner has been developed for the fifth colour station on the Ricoh Pro™ C7100X series colour cut sheet digital production press. It allows print service providers to produce eye-catching results that inspire highly engaging and effective campaigns. It expands the colour gamut, enhances images and can be used as a solid or highlight or graphic colour. When combined with other process shades, it can create a neon palette. The toner is reflective under UV light to extend the range of printing possibilities offered by standard CMYK, white, or clear printing.

The new addition supports a ‘dramatic market expansion’ of special effect enhancement capabilities for magazine, direct mail, retail and point of purchase markets as highlighted by the InfoTrends report Beyond CMYK: The Use of Special Effects in Digital Printing. It states nearly 1.8 trillion colour pages in the U.S. and Western Europe, or around 30% of the total colour pages, currently receive some type of special effects enhancement. It also says,

‘there is a tremendous opportunity for digitally produced special effect enhancements to grow’. “The Neon Pink Toner joins the highly successful Neon Yellow toner which has already helped creative print service providers develop impactful and vibrant print,” says Tim Carter, commercial print sales director, at Ricoh. “Increasingly print service providers want the ability to offer quick, easy and cost effective high quality personalised print that stands out. This latest addition will open up numerous exciting opportunities.” The Neon Pink toner will be available from November. It is retro-fittable, which means existing clients can expand the capabilities of the Ricoh Pro C7100X presses they operate today. PIXEL PROPHET

TAKING STOCK OF THE SITUATION When you get an invitation from Adobe, it’s worth taking it up, even if it doesn’t sound that exciting at first glance. A visit to their comfortable new office suite high above a fashionable part of Shoreditch is an experience in itself. Martin Christie writes…

[C]

omplete with open plan workspace, soft furnishing and kaleidoscope colours, it also features rest and play areas, including table tennis and snooker tables, and a 150-metre running track on the roof, high above the polluted air of Old Street’s ‘Silicon Roundabout.’ All very millennial. Adobe employs 600 staff in the UK, and the new HQ occupies three floors of a new development block, very much designed for that new generation of worker, although much of its exposed inner skeleton mimics a more industrial age. It’s always interesting to see how the other half live and work, rather than be bogged down by the day to day routine of customer-led design and print production which is random by the nature of digital on demand. Whether it’s the Epson sponsored Mercedes Formula One factory, or a software giant, the magazine can open some interesting doors that would otherwise be closed, but that still have a relevance to the daily chores. It usually reveals more than the original purpose, and this little trip was no exception. Adobe wanted to talk and run a small informal workshop, on their Stock Libraries, a relatively recent addition to the Creative Cloud suite, but which is also available as a standalone service. I have to admit I’d never really looked at it before and tended to treat it as one of those annoying panels that open up in the workspace when you are trying to look for something more useful. Which is probably why Adobe thought it would be a good idea to draw more attention to the service. Stock libraries are nothing new, of course, with established companies like Shutterstock, and iStock which is also part of photographic archivers Getty Images, being around for some time, as part of a three billion dollar content market. One such successful start-up was New Yorkbased Fotolia, opened in 2005 which had a million registered users by 2009, and many millions of images available online. So successful, in fact, that Adobe took a fancy to it and bought it in 2015, throwing considerably more resources

into the catalogue and absorbing it in the CS empire. The advantage of that for the Creative Suite user is that any files available in stock can be directly imported into Photoshop, Illustrator or InDesign and merged as layers into existing design templates. More of that later. The statistics are daunting. Some 180,000 contributors, photographers, artists and designers add over 50,000 individual files daily on average that totals an image bank of over 90 million images, including video and audio tracks. Latest contributors include Reuters News agency, covering news, sports and entertainment, in stills as well as over a million movie clips. This all contributes to a massive resource, all of which would be virtually invisible without redefining how images are searched for, and this is an important part of the Adobe programme utilising its artificial intelligence system, Sensei. They are developing engines which will refine searching to a very fine art, not merely subject and keywords, but specific content, and even the type and orientation of the target, and individual detail to an extraordinary degree. So instead of man-eating hamburger, think of businessman eating a hamburger with the left hand, wearing a bowler hat and black pin-striped suit with a rolled umbrella in the street during evening rush hour. Begin to get the idea? All of this begins to be possible using sophisticated image recognition and comparison technology. Anyone who has trawled through acres of stock image libraries hoping to find something that would vaguely match the needs of the job

would appreciate how valuable fine-tuning the search engine is, both in saving time which is inevitably non-chargeable, and also coming up with a more exact correlation with the brief. Adobe introduced the workshop with a short, amusing, but horribly familiar video of a hapless designer harassed by an impatient and imprecise client continually demanding minor changes to a composite layout and expecting them all to be done instantly. This is a working environment we have all had to become used to in one way or another, and there is no sign of the trend diminishing anytime soon. In fact, it will only get worse as people are surrounded by thousands of images daily, and can pluck them from the internet at will. So why can’t you use them? Of course, we get this problem daily as customers have found a Google image and wanted to use it in print. Unfortunately most customers wouldn’t recognise a high-resolution image if they tripped over it, and secondly, and most importantly, all those free to view images aren’t free to use. They belong to somebody and that somebody may not take too kindly to its alternative use. Google images are intended to aid the company’s search engine and help you find things you want to look at, and web pages you may want to explore. It is an unfortunate but inevitable consequence that they have also become a convenient reference library for the casual browser. Rights owners with expensive lawyers would not be squeamish about pursuing the unauthorised use of their property should it

Quick Print Pro • Digital Imaging

October 2017

become necessary, and although the proliferation of internet imaging has driven the proverbial coach and horses through any concept of copyright, it should never be forgotten that it still exists in law, however ineffectual. Google themselves are making efforts to police the web with algorithms that will seek out illegal content from websites, and effectively eliminate them from search engines. This is all to the good as politicians seem to be so far behind coming to terms with the digital economy they might as well be trying to get their heads around the digital watch. The simple beauty of using a library like Adobe Stock is that you are buying the right to an image which is not only perfectly suitable for the job but one you can use with confidence knowing there will be no unexpected consequences whatever the end use. Part of the Adobe selection system is the scrupulous checking of images for any contentious items - brand names, privacy issues etc. It’s a potential minefield the amateur enters at their peril. All of the competing stock libraries have different pricing plans depending on usage, and often the size of the download, which can look a little confusing, but without using price as the definitive guide the content and the flexibility are probably more important for the professional user. Shutterstock, for example, is more expensive but has a lot more images than Adobe. However, browsing through the images, many are near duplicates. A particular person’s face shot, for example, may have as many as twenty different copies with a slightly different expression to illustrate different moods. This represents classic editorial options - you wouldn’t want a smiling face covering a sad story and vice versa. Similarly, much of the Shutterstock offering tends to follow the more traditional, and rather predictable illustrations. This can make stock library browsing rather uninspiring. There is a place for it, but it is rather more Mail on Sunday than Instagram or Snapchat. The demands of social media, in fact, are very much the target of Adobe’s image selection process, aware that those very millennials sitting on their soft furnishing are much more influenced by the style of their immediate peers than the more conservative established news services. This is why the workshop invited us to meet Dave Burt, creator of Instagram site @London, which has built up over two million followers in the space of a few years.

vivid-online.com

While he would probably rather eat worms than featuring a standard image of a London bobby or a red-coated guardsman on his site, he would browse the rather more off the wall content in Adobe Stock to supplement the creative submissions of his members. Having a chance to chat to Dave after the workshop was over, it was good to hear his positive take on the possibilities of social media and the potential of the new generation of influencers. Being a little older, it’s all too easy to become cynical of an environment that seems to be led by the power of advertising and promotion; it’s refreshing to talk to someone prepared to stick two fingers at it and do their own thing. No covert sponsorship on @ London then. By the very nature of its users, the Adobe Creative Crowd is likely to contain a high proportion of the latest talent and imagination, and hence the calibre of submissions will reflect that quality. For Creative Cloud users, Adobe Stock is simplicity itself in use. You can get ten images free on a 30-day trial just to try it out. After that, you can preview the images before you buy them. Downloading them from the stock website into the library module — it could be a complete background panorama or additional figures — they are dropped into the main template as smart objects with an Adobe watermark so they can be manipulated and placed before a final version is commissioned. They are all hi-res, so there is no problem of resolution compatibility. Like using layers in Photoshop, you can have alternatives sitting at the edge of the workspace. You don’t have to be a Creative Cloud subscriber, you can buy images separately, but a subscription has substantial price advantages to individual files. It’s worth look through all the various subscription options to see which one suits your operation best. With the synchronisation with Adobe applications being a major selling point, Shutterstock has hit back recently with a Plug-in for Photoshop that has the same trybefore-you-buy facility, and are also developing intelligent search options, so it’s a very competitive market. Adobe has the advantage in global reach as Stock is available in 13 languages in 36 countries, and have also just added a plug-in for Microsoft Powerpoint which is bound to be popular with those doing presentations on the hoof. It’s also just added a new resource, Stocksy, with another 400,000 slightly quirky images to add to the library bank. They used to say you pay your money and you take your choice, but you have the option of making your choice first, and that option very much comes down to how convenient it will be to find exactly what you want compared to any alternative. Worth a look at least! www.stock.adobe.com

SHOW PREVIEW

THE PRINT SHOW The Print Show attracted nearly 6,000 visitors at the NEC in Birmingham last year and organisers have said that the 2017 event, which takes place from 11-13th October at the International Centre in Telford is on track to smash all records.

Building on the success of last year, Duplo will be showcasing and demonstrating how their systems can ensure operations develop the most efficient, productive and profitable post press environments — all with automated precision. www.duplouk.com

ocusing on returning exhibitor Xeretec, Susan Bayne, group marketing executive at Xeretec, told QPP, “Not only is it important to be present at The Print Show as last year’s was very successful, it also proved to be a very busy event with good footfall and it was attended by an audience that was perfect for us. “More than that, it served as a chance for us to catch up with many of our existing customers to talk about their changing print requirements, as well as an opportunity to meet with potential new customers. Susan also gave an insight into what visitors can expect on the Xeretec stand this year. Equipment due to be featured includes the new Xerox Versant 180 and the Xerox Versant 3100, which are replacing the popular Versant 80 and Versant 2100. She said: “At The Print Show this year, we’re looking to build on the success we enjoyed in 2016, while helping commercial printers reach their business objectives with the range of services and solutions that Xeretec offers.” www.xeretec.co.uk HP will be exhibiting for the first time at the event this year in front of those visitors on the lookout for kit that can help them diversify into new markets and access profitable, largeformat work. The digital print giant will also be spreading the word about its hugely popular Indigo technology.

Konica Minolta has taken one of the larger stands, mirroring its strategy at the inaugural show in 2015 and last year’s event.

Anne Sharp, large-format printing marketing manager in the UK and Ireland for HP, said: “HP sees The Print Show as a strategically important event for us this year in terms of connecting with our customers within the graphics printing market. “HP will guide visitors through the world of applications through the HP WallArt Suite platform, an easy and innovative web-to-print experience designed to help small-to-medium sized print service providers in decoration and explore new possibilities to express yourself through custom wall coverings, blinds, and other applications for interiors in the HP application area. “We will be showcasing our HP Latex technology and PageWide XL range, with a key focus on applications both from our largeformat business and Indigo business.” www.hp.com

Bernard Cassidy of Konica Minolta Business Solutions UK said “The Print Show is a vital component in our communications strategy to engage with both Konica Minolta’s customers and prospects,” adding: “Our investment in The Print Show is a tangible representation of our commitment to both the production print market and to our customers.” Bernard continued, “Print service providers are constantly having to adapt, reshape and evolve their offer to ensure that print remains relevant in an increasingly digital world. Importantly, exhibitions provide the perfect opportunity to engage with people face to face, whether that’s to build on already strong existing customer and partner relationships, make new connections, or engage with potential buyers—this in itself is reason enough to exhibit.” Konica Minolta aim to demonstrate new kit

and the growing importance of the industrial and commercial printing sectors as they become more customer focused and move more into marketing, software, and cross-media services to take print applications on to a new level.” New technology — “The focus of our stand will be production workflow automation and exciting new additions to the Konica Minolta Production Print hardware portfolio, including the AccurioPress C6100 series,” adding: “From our perspective, we will have a team of dedicated production print specialists on hand to provide expert guidance and advice to print providers looking to diversify and broaden their printed communications service offering.” He continued: “We will work with customers at The Print Show 2017 to identify key areas within their production workflow, where improvements could be made around the effectiveness of document production from job capture and preparation, through to colour management and finishing, to save you time and increase profit margins. “Faced with increasing demand for shortrun, fast turnaround jobs, ultimately, business growth depends on the ability to minimise costs, maximise output and achieve viable production volumes. “The most effective way of overcoming the challenge of doing more in the same time, is to implement workflow automation solutions that make light work of time-intensive, error-prone manual processes.” www.konicaminolta.co.uk Canon will provide visitors with a unique insight into new technologies designed to unleash the power of print. On Stand E24 in Hall 1, Canon will demonstrate its clear commitment to delivering end-to-end solutions to help customers unlock their commercial print potential and offer inspirational application ideas.

The Océ Colorado 1640, the first 64” roll-to-roll wide format printer built on the revolutionary new Canon UVgel technology, will be on display at the event. UVgel technology provides precision quality for indoor graphics, durability for outdoor applications and consigns compromise to the past. Improving productivity relies on media flexibility, consistent colour from the first sheet to the last, finishing options and reliability. Canon’s complete range of large format and production printers aim to deliver the ultimate combination of features to offer the

broadest range of applications. Duncan Smith, Director of Industrial and Production Solutions at Canon UK, comments: “We’ve been inspiring customers to explore the power of imaging for over 80 years. Canon combines heavy investment in research and development and dedication to launching disruptive technologies to help customers face today’s complex business challenges. “Exhibiting at this year’s Print Show is an exciting opportunity for visitors to explore a hub of creative ideas. It also gives us the chance to network with like-minded individuals in an industry that is vibrant and dynamic.” Duncan continues: “Canon prioritises showcasing its advanced applications in new and different ways. We’re a partner that can be trusted to help organisations work more efficiently, achieve growth and stand out in an always-on world.” Keep up to date with the latest developments by following @CanonProPrintUK on Twitter and searching for ‘Canon UK’ on LinkedIn. www.canon.co.uk Mimaki’s distributor, Hybrid Services returns to The Print Show once again with a raft of innovations as it supports a substantial quota of its resellers who are also exhibiting at the event. With newly launched LED UV, solvent and textile printers on stands around the three halls of the exhibition, Mimaki will have a significant presence at the third running of the annual show and Hybrid’s stand will feature core products from the Japanese manufacturer’s range of wide format inkjet printers and cutting plotters. “Hybrid has been a supporter of the Print Show since its launch in 2015 and working with our reseller partners has presented Mimaki’s solutions to what has turned out to be a very engaged and knowledgeable audience,” says Hybrid’s national sales manager, John de la Roche. “For 2017, we’re keen to show how Mimaki’s product range continues to expand, so increasing our presence gives us a great opportunity, alongside our resellers, to meet with more visitors and present the very latest kit.” Hybrid is also providing an integral element of the Print Show’s unique “Printers’ Bazaar” feature, with labels, decals and sticker ideas being demonstrated in the feature’s Label Loft zone in Hall 2. “Labels come in all shapes and sizes and we’re looking forward to helping print companies appreciate the significant revenue generating benefits they can gain from

investigating this area of the market,” states de la Roche. “Mimaki has a broad range of printing and cutting technology that’s perfectly suited to short runs, custom data, low cost / high value full colour work — even metallic and clear labels. We’re sure that visitors spending time in The Label Loft will be inspired by this area of the market and our experts will be on hand to guide them through the options and opportunities.” Hybrid’s stand is centrally located in Hall 1 and the Label Loft is situated within the Printers’ Bazaar in Hall 2. PPD will be one of several partners companies that will work alongside Hybrid Services at The Print Show this year. Mike Ashforth, managing director of PPD, said the firm is hoping to speak with visitors looking to begin or enhance their on-demand equipment portfolio. Ashforth said: “As an expanding business, we are now looking to move in to a wider geographic area as well as broadening the range

of digital printing equipment we offer to the commercial print and print for pay market. “As a specialist service provider of digital print technologies to the print production industry, we appeal to everyone looking to begin or enhance their on-demand equipment portfolio from cut sheet presses to roll fed and flat bed ink-jet systems.” RA Smart will also be on hand to show off Mimaki kit to visitors, including the Mimaki TX300P-1800. Alex Mighall, who oversees customer liaison at the company, said the show represents a “great opportunity” for R A Smart to reach out to the market and demonstrate how it can help businesses expand. Mighall said: “As one of the industry leaders in the supply of wide format printers and finishing equipment it only seems right that we exhibit at The Print Show. With around 6,000 attendees, it’s a great opportunity for us to show both existing and new clients what R A Smart have to offer and why we would be a excellent choice as a supplier for them. “The TX300P has already proven to be an extremely popular choice for our customers and we have installed multiple systems in the UK since its launch in September last year. Now, with new options such as dual ink technology the machine opens itself up for even more possibilities and The Print Show will be an excellent opportunity for us to show this off.” Meanwhile, returning for a second consecutive year is Your Print Specialists, which enjoyed a successful event in 2016 after the Mimaki JFX200 sold well from its stand. Georgia Brown, operations manager at the company, is confident of achieving similar results this year. She said: “In 2016, we were impressed with the high footfall level as well as the quality and variance of customers attending. Any show we exhibit at is classed as high importance with The Print Show being no exception.

“It is a chance for us to develop, and build relationships with both new and existing customers, as well as showcase our new products along with being able to educate potential customers on new exciting applications and introducing them to new revenue streams. “Applications will be a primary focus for us this year at The Print Show. We will be showcasing Mimaki hardware only but presenting a wide selection of applications across all three disciplines focusing on the ‘Think it, Print it, Profit’ theme. “ www.hybridservices.co.uk Speaking about OKI’s return to the show was Andrew Hall, marketing manager of OKI Systems UK, who said given its success at previous editions of the show, it was a “simple decision” to sign up for 2017. “Our partners Amaya and The Magic Touch will showcase transfer print products — the Pro7411WT and new PRO8432WT A3 printers, while the Pro Series light production printers will be on other partner stands, alongside our wideformat Colorpinter range,” Hall said, before adding: “On the OKI stand itself, we will have a Colorpainter, Pro9541 CMYK+ Clear and Pro 9542 white under device.” Debbie Callaghan, marketing manager of

23

RISO UK said “The UK market is important to RISO, especially with the growing use of cut sheet inkjet printers in the production print sector. In general, the print sector in the UK is continuously evolving and it’s an exciting time to be in the industry. Michael Bolton, managing director of printMAX said: “For printMAX, exhibiting at The Print Show again will be about bringing new ideas to both prospective customers and existing customers alike, bringing hardware solutions capable of generating a large range of applications making for sound sense investments. “We plan to bring wide-format printers such as the CJV that enable companies to hit the ground running and make money from day one with a diverse range of capabilities, this should be high on the ‘must see’ list for visitors attending the show.” Such is the level of printMAX’s commitment to the event that the company has also thrown its backing behind SignLink Live, a new show that will launch this year and run alongside The Print Show. The Mimaki UJFMkII Series will feature in the ‘Promo Print Alley’ as part of the ‘Profit Factory’ — the focused application area of Sign Link Live. Bolton said: “As part of our commitment to The Print Show and SignLink Live, we’ll be offering free application advice and knowledge in the ‘Promo Print Alley’ Profit Factory — with an eye-opening array of printed products with which to inspire visitors. Lucy Ratcliffe,. now a director of Signmaster, told QPP: “I think that the event is very important, considering the time of year. Having two sign/print shows six months apart from one another is perfect and the industry is big enough to support both well. “Since purchasing the business in May, we feel it is really important to have a presence at the show, meet our current and potential customers and reveal the plans we have going forward — which will include a rebrand launch at the show. “We have also just become a HP reseller and so will be attending with a Latex 365 machine as well as OKI’s new E-64 and Roland’s LEF— our most popular product.” www.theprintshow.co.uk

LATEST NEWS IN PRINT

New Trends Welcome to this new feature for those breaking stories as we go to print. Our regular readers have a real thirst for the hottest and latest news in print, so it would be a shame to have to carry them forward as in the past when the magazine was full, in bed and ready to be tucked in. The simple answer when copy exceeds the pages planned, is, yes add more pages. Welcome to your fattening up for winter, extra news in print. SOYANG INNOVATIVE NEW HP LATEX TEXTILE RANGE

Leading printable material manufacturer and distributor, Soyang Europe has announced the availability of a new range of HP Latex certified textiles that leverage the most from the printer manufacturer’s latest latex ink set. All the new fabrics pass ISO 105-X12 test for dry rubbing, ensuring that not only are the prints vibrant and sharp, but more importantly, are robust enough for use in soft signage applications. The entire range of fabrics is manufactured in Germany by Aurich Textilien and, as the company’s exclusive UK and Ireland distributor, Soyang Europe holds stock centrally for next day delivery. The range comprises a variety of products, including the highly regarded Supernova knitted backlit, DigiFacination lightweight woven fabric, DigiPanorama 250g high quality display fabric and the very competitively priced, lightweight DigiCompetition display fabric that’s ideal for stretch frame systems. All benefit from FR rating and thanks to the innovative preparation, are suitable for sewing, finishing and transporting without noticeable loss of image quality, change in gloss or mark off. “HP and Aurich have worked jointly to optimise this range of fabrics in order to achieve the best latex ink adhesion and thanks to the unique finishing agent, print companies with the latest generation HP Latex printers will see significant benefits,” states Soyang Europe managing director, Mark Mashiter. “The opportunities for printed textile continue

to grow, so this is a substantial user base that can now enjoy great potential for incremental business with the new fabrics.” “We’ve seen an increase in requests from print companies with wide format latex machines for better performing fabrics, so we’re delighted with the response we’ve had already to the new HP Latex certified range,” concludes Mashiter. Available exclusively through Soyang Europe, the new fabrics from Aurich join the company’s substantial portfolio of European, American and Far Eastern manufactured substrates that span the entire spectrum of roll fed printing for not only latex, but also UV, dye sub and solvent printers up to 5m wide. www.soyang.co.uk

INSTANT PRICING AND STOCK CHECK FROM PENS.CO.UK

Pens.co.uk, the flagship website from The Pen Warehouse, has been upgraded with powerful new features. Print pros can now view instant quotes, including pricing bespoke to them, and check real-time stock levels. Now print pros can log in to their own trade account and view specifically tailored pricing. An instant quote can be built as products, quantities and print options are selected, meaning pricing information can be viewed more easily than ever, 24 hours a day. The upgraded website now also features real-time stock information. As quantities are selected, a simple traffic light system will

advise whether there is sufficient stock available for the chosen product. If it’s out of stock, you will be presented with suggested alternative products — no need to waste time with emails and phone calls. These are just some of the benefits of the relaunched site. Others include comprehensive search functionality, downloadable product images and data, and tools to help customers find you more easily. Pens.co.uk is your go-to site for promotional pens and features Europe’s largest range of printed and engraved writing instruments. There are over 400 product lines available, including in-house designs exclusive to The Pen Warehouse. For more information or to request your Trade Account login, call 01252 400 270 or email sales@pens.co.uk.

PEN WAREHOUSE AND SNAP PRODUCTS LAUNCH CUSTOM CATALOGUES

There’s an innovative new way for print pros to pitch promotional pens to customers and prospects, with free Custom Catalogues from The Pen Warehouse and Snap Products. These online catalogues are free of charge and feature your customer’s branding shown on a wide range of digitally printed merchandise. Simply send your customer’s logo in the required format and the design team will do the rest. Logos must be high-resolution PNGs with a transparent background. Send your customer’s logo to www.custom. catalogues@pens.co.uk for a customised version of Pens Galore or send it to www.custom. catalogues@snapproducts.co.uk for a wide range of customised catalogues, including Promotional Merchandise, Promotional Notebooks and Technology Gifts. Within three working days you’ll receive a link to an online catalogue that you can easily share with your customer. Seeing their logo on a range of best-selling promotional merchandise is the ideal way to visualise the printed product and help you make the sale. AOB - YOU TELL US

Many of you have contributed to the launch of our print club, some former CSN readers from 19 years back that have grown with us have requested a level playing field to quote for new business. Together we can make this work, so please do join in.

REQUEST YOUR TENDER TEMPLATES CSR Corporate Social Responsibility Also referred to by our potential new business customers as corporate conscience, corporate citizenship, social performance, or sustainable responsible business ethics. We need to show proof of our responsibility as part of our customer’s own CSR credentials. It is all very contagious and although another hurdle before quoting is a serious commitment worth signing up to. The practice of corporate self-regulation integrated into a business model is right up our street. QPP policy models will confirm a firm’s implementation of CSR going beyond compliance and engaging in some social good, beyond the interests of the firm and that which is required by law. CSR is a process with the aim to embrace responsibility for the company’s actions and encourage a positive impact through its activities on the environment, consumers, employees, communities, stakeholders and all other members of the public who may also be considered stakeholders.

19/09/2017 18:06

Our initial draft has been blended from participating print businesses wishing to share for the common good. An editable copy will be sent to all new members of the print club. When you publish your CSR you can challenge other local businesses to source print from a local service provider, yes you!

DRP Disaster Recovery Plan or BCP Business Continuity Planning

To qualify for the right to quote for many councils and government tenders we are required to produce our disaster recovery plan. The required documented process or set of procedures prove a process is in place to recover and protect a business IT infrastructure in the event of a disaster Come fire, theft or flood imagine how well we are placed as together we have 6000 plus emergency back up print rooms that can hand deliver just about anywhere in the UK. Some tenders ask for a COOP, called a continuity of operations plan. Co incidentally when QPP members work as a CO OP we can do this too. We just need each other to back each other up. Talking about back up, work has started on a cloud backup bank for all our customers’ originals, so bring on those previously difficult to complete/ compete tenders.

QPP Health and Safety Policy template

HEALTH AND SAFETY POLICY: It is now a legal requirement to have a written Health and Safety policy in place if you have more than five employees. At QPP we are aware that there are many quick printers, or copy shops as we are still widely known, who have just that number of staff and as such have slipped through the net. With the growing popularity of apprenticeships it is essential that you have a policy in place, as the organisation placing somebody with you is obliged to check the suitability of your workplace. Our aim is to produce a template that is easily adapted to your own individual circumstances and to that end we have invested many weeks research and now have a template to forward to members. Tree of the Year 2017 The Woodland Trust is asking for help in choosing the ‘2017 tree of the year’. They have drawn up a short list for you to vote for your favourite tree in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. The winning trees in each country will benefit from a Tree Care award of £1,000, with any runner-up trees receiving 1000 separate votes or more, subject to the eligibility criteria , a £500 Tree Care Award. The award can be used to arrange a health check from an arboriculturalist, provide interpretation or educational materials or simply just hold a community celebratory event in honour of the tree. Once they have their country winners they will select just one tree from this public vote to represent the UK in the European Tree of the Year competition, organised by the Environmental Partnership Association. The Woodland Trust is the UK’s largest woodland conservation charity withover 500,000 members and supporters and more than 1,000 sites, covering over 26,000 hectares, all over the UK.They protect and campaign on behalf of this country’s woods, plant trees, and restore ancient woodland for the benefit of wildlife and people. Their vision is a UK rich in native woods and trees, for people and wildlife.

Ancient woodland restoration

Ancient woods have been around for many centuries - long enough to develop into ecosystems that are rich, complex and irreplaceable. Officially it is woodland that has existed since 1600AD, but many are much older than this. Some may even link back to the original woodland that covered the UK around 10,000 years ago after the last Ice Age. Ancient woodland now covers only around 2% of the UK. Much of what remains has been damaged by planting with non-native conifers or colonisation by invasive species. The Woodland Trust is working closely with landowners to restore what is left of our ancient woodland. Careful woodland management to let in sunlight encourages native species to thrive again, reversing years of damage.

Woodland Trust Office Paper — The Environmental Story The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC UK), has produced a new informative brochure, specifically aimed at the Restaurant and Food & Beverage industry sectors, promoting responsibly sourced and labelled materials used in the production of food and beverage packaging. Woodland Trust Office Paper is a unique brand in the UK market. The strong environmental branding is backed up by environmental credentials that are second to none. Few, if any, papers have such a strong and demonstrable environmental pedigree as Woodland Trust Office Paper. Not only is it produced to the highest environmental standards but also every sheet of Woodland Trust Office Paper sold contributes directly to the work of the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity the Woodland Trust — it really is ‘the paper that plants trees’ Check in with your Premier Paper Account Manager. www.paper.co.uk

I’m dreaming of a white Christmas Imagine a snowflake with textured details on a postcard, a book cover with a white horse on a dark stock with vivid hues or an advertisement with white text that pops on a vinyl window cling. These types of specialty enhancements are a reality with Xerox’s new White Dry Ink for the Xerox iGen® 5 Press’ fifth print station. This is exciting news for iGen 5 customers. This announcement opens up a whole new range of applications. Designers will love the ability to use white on coloured and transparent substrates to create promotional items like brochures, business cards, greeting cards and invitations, point of purchase signage, direct mail postcards and letters, and book covers. The opportunities also extend to packaging applications like folding cartons.”

Xerox’s White Dry Ink features many distinctive advantages including: • The ability to print White Dry Ink only as well as white layers under or over CMYK; • Outstanding brightness and opacity that’s achievable in a single pass of white; • Automated multi-pass mode for up to two layers of white. Additional layers of white can be manually printed for custom applications. “We have been testing White Dry Ink with our iGen 5 and we see great promise for expanding our offerings to our customers,” said Alan Roberts, senior vice president, Data Communications Management Corp. “White Dry Ink has great applications for printing on black and other stocks and as an underlay to create memorable cards, posters, signage and other marketing collateral.” White Dry Ink will be on display from 10-14 September at PRINT ’17 in Chicago and available for installations from 2nd October. Please check with your local sales representative for regional availability. www.xerox.com

New super compact AJS embroidery machine AJS Embroidery Services Ltd has made the first public showing of the new Tajima “SAI” Super compact embroidery machine at the Coactive – Newtech show in Durham at the end of September. The new SAI model incorporates the technological advancements of the leading embroidery machine manufacturer TAJIMA and is a super compact and more affordable solution for new embroiderers. With the differences on this machine it can clearly be seen that it was designed by an industrial embroidery machine manufacturer:

• Stitch quality that is acceptable to an embroidery professional. • Production figures that are comparable to an industrial machine. • High quality precision parts provide a longer life with lower maintenance. The machine has been designed to include the advancements of TAJIMA and also provide the ease of use of a home market machine. The Newtech nationwide series of practical workshops includes the most extensive and exciting combination of new opportunities for printers of any local show in the UK.

Fluorescent inks enhance new Mimaki TS30-1300 Mimaki’s UK and Ireland distributor, Hybrid Services has announced that the company’s latest dye-sublimation offering, the TS30-1300 1.3m printer, has arrived at its Cheshire showroom and is available for demonstrations. The new TS30-1300 is a 1.3m dye sublimation printer that was launched at FESPA earlier this year, creating a real buzz around companies involved with manufacturing sportswear, promotional items and apparel, as Hybrid’s Textile Product Manager, Brett Platt explains; “The entry level TS30-1300’s arrival offers true wide format production dye sublimation at a new and much lower price point. Retailing at just £7,495 it provides everything we’ve come to expect from Mimaki’s high print and build quality for a new audience.” Of particular interest is its configuration with yellow and pink fluorescent inks, as Platt continues; “We now have the option of fluorescent inks for the TS30-1300, and the demo unit at our showroom in Cheshire has been commissioned with neon pink and yellow to demonstrate the eye-catching opportunities fluoro inks afford. The

extraordinary shades achievable using these inks makes them ideal for the production of dancewear and event branding and we’re keen to show this off to potential purchasers.” Value and vibrancy can be added to bespoke, quality products by using neon inks and offer the additional safety feature of enhancing visibility to sports garments. Mimaki’s yellow and pink neon inks are ideal for including in designs for cycling kits, swimsuits and gymnastics apparel. “The TS30 will also open doors to fashion designers and studios,” concludes Platt. “For sampling purposes, it’s no longer good enough to present a design idea on paper and the TS30 makes it cost effective to show compelling samples or even made up garments on a range of different polyester fabrics.” www.hybridservices.co.uk

Mimaki photo-realistic colour 3D printing Mimaki has announced the launch of a brand new approach to 3D printing with the Mimaki 3DUJ-553 UV LED printing solution. This is the world’s first 3D printer with over 10 million colours, enabling the production of colour-realistic signs, prototypes, parts, products and other 3D printed applications that eliminate the need for time-consuming hand painting of 3D printed objects. “As the 3D printing market continues to grow, Mimaki has capitalised on an opportunity to bring a truly unique solution to the market,” says Ronald van den Broek, General Manager Sales at Mimaki Europe. “Other 3D printing solutions have two primary issues when it comes to creating 3D printed objects. First, they cannot produce objects in photorealistic colour. This often requires that objects be hand painted, a time-consuming and expensive prospect. Secondly, most 3D printed objects require removal of stabilising fixtures before they can be used. This again takes time and risks damaging the object. With the Mimaki 3DUJ-553, both of these barriers are eliminated, since it can print photorealistic colour, choosing from up to 10 million different colours. And its watersoluble support material can easily be washed off without damaging the object. This enables the cost-effective production of exquisite 3D printed products with elaborate finishing. We believe this printer will be warmly welcomed by professionals in many industries, from signs and display graphics to education, healthcare, manufacturing, architecture, construction and more.” Mimaki has a long history of bringing innovative inkjet printing solutions to the market, for the printing of everything from banners and dimensional signs to textiles and direct print to cylindrical objects. Exclusively distributed in the UK and Ireland by Hybrid Services, company director, Phil Thomas states “Mimaki has used its significant knowledge and expertise in the development of the 3DUJ-553 full-colour 3D printer and we fully anticipate it satisfying even the most exacting professional requirements for full-colour modelling of 3D objects of all types.” The 3DUJ-553 uses a highly precise laydown of ink droplets coupled with a choice of three dot sizes for modelling of colour gradations with reduced granularity. These 3D printed objects are also durable enough to withstand post-processing such as overcoating and attachment of screws and other fixtures. “We showed this as a technology demonstration at drupa 2016 to rave reviews,” Van den Broek comments. “And we have shown the printer and/ or objects it has printed at a variety of shows and events since that time. Prospective customers tell us this is exactly the 3D printing solution they have been waiting for, and we expect to see fairly rapid uptake once it is commercially available by the end of this year. Customers will also be able to take advantage of Mimaki’s excellent service and support infrastructure to get up and running fast, and to ensure uninterrupted production to the fullest extent possible.”

THE DETAILS: FOCUS ON COLOUR • More than 10 million colours. With its UV LED curing method, the 3DUJ-553 is able to produce objects layer by layer and apply a final UV ink coating of approximately 22 microns using CMYK, white and clear inks, producing a finished object of exquisite quality. UV LED curing also applies minimal heat to the object. The printer exhibits fast start-up times and minimal power usage, reducing the overall running costs. • Extended colour gamut. This full-colour modelling approach is able to achieve 84% of the FOGRA 39L colour gamut and 90% of the SWOP gamut. A white ink layer results in objects featuring brilliant colours. • Colour profiles. The 3DUJ-553 is the world’s first 3D printer to take advantage of colour profiles. This means not only accurate colour from the printer but also allows the development of simulation profiles for accurate viewing of colour on a PC monitor. This ensures accurate colour specification before printing even begins, saving time and reducing waste. • Add translucency with clear ink. Using clear ink adds an additional effect to 3D printed objects, especially if the object will be backlit. The combination of clear and CMYK inks opens the door to increased designer creativity. • Excellent post-process performance. The inks used by the 3DUJ-553 contain an acrylic resin that produces hardness equivalent to ABS resin. This means that overcoating, drilling and attachment of screws can be accomplished without damage to the object. It also adds superior weather resistance, surface smoothness and strength to the object. • Water-soluble support material. The 3DUJ-553 uses a water-soluble support structure which can be easily washed away with water. This enables removal of the support material even on very delicate objects, without the need to cut or scratch away support material as in other 3D printing processes. • Camera for monitoring of modelling status. The 3DUJ-553 has a monitoring camera that enables users to observe modelling status, reducing modelling losses. www.hybridservices.co.uk

SOMETHING TO SHARE…? Sick Joke

A man was very sick. Doctors feared the worst. He is at home one day, resting in his bed. He looks up and says, “Is my wife here?” His wife replies, “Yes, dear, I’m here, next to you.” The man goes, “Are my children here?” “Yes, Daddy, we are all here,” say the children. “Are my other relatives also here?” And they say, “Yes, we are all here...” The man sits up and says, “Then why in the world is the light on in the kitchen?”

Dictionary Instructions

1. For your convenience, all words have been placed in alphabetical order. So merely open book to page where the word you wish to look up should be. 2. If you don’t know how to spell the word you wish to look up, look up a synonym and hope the definition contains the word you wish to look up. 3. If you don’t know what a synonym is, look up the word “synonym,” since we just showed you how to spell that one. 4. Now, repeat Step 2 before repeating Step 1. 5. If the word you originally wished to look up is found to mean something entirely different than you thought it did, then your problem is insuperable. 6. Look up “insuperable.”

Work Ethic

I like work, it fascinates me... I can sit back and look at it for hours...

Trainee sales tired out

Four young would be salesmen afflicted with spring fever skipped morning sales training. After lunch they reported to the lady trainer that they had a flat tyre. Much to their relief she smiled and said, “Well, you missed a test today so take seats apart from one another and take out a piece of paper.” Still smiling, she waited for them to sit down. Then she said, “First Question: Which tyre was flat?”

First and next

A widow recently married a widower. Soon after the marriage she was approached by a friend who laughingly remarked, “I suppose, like all men who have been married before, your husband sometimes talks about his first wife?” “Oh, not any more, he doesn’t,” the widow replied. “What stopped him?” “I started talking about my next husband.”

Slang Stockings

Waking into the lingerie store, the hard-of-hearing customer says to the shop assistant, “I’d like to buy a pair of stockings for my wife.” The assistant asks, “Sheer?” And the man replies, “No, she is in another store.”

WANTED – It’s a cracker Christmas Jokes

Can we have more of the Christmas spirit, just like last year when you lovely readers sent in your favourite seasonal cracker jokes to share on these pages? It’s never too early for the C word, as we have been running calendars and cards for weeks now.

Are you sure?

A weasel is dining at a restaurant. He takes his seat and starts looking over the menu. The waiter then asks, “What can I get you to drink, sir?” “Oh, not much. Just a Diet Pop,” goes the weasel.

Quack remedy

A bent-over old lady hobbled into a doctor’s office. Within minutes, she came out again but miraculously; she was standing up as straight as could be. A man in the waiting room, who had been watching her, said in amazement, “My goodness, what did the doctor do to you?” The old lady replied, “He gave me a longer cane.”

Pet call

I was at a garage sale one day and saw a box marked, “Electronic cat and dog call—guaranteed to work”. I looked inside and was amused to see an electric can opener.

It’ll be all right on the night

An 80-year-old gentleman was being interviewed on his 60 years of marriage. “Is there one big difference in your marriage today compared to when you were first married?” asked the interviewer. “Well,” said the man after pondering for moment, “it now takes me all night to do what I used to do all night.”

Company shares

For the holidays, all company employees got socks with the corporate logo on them. The day after we received our gifts, a co-worker reported on his wife’s response when she saw them. “Honey!” she said. “I didn’t realise you were going to get SOCK options this year!”

Isolation room

A guy goes to the doctor and after a thorough examination the doc says, “I’m going to put you in an isolation room.” The guy replies, “Will that make me better?” “No. I am also going to put you on a diet of pizza.” “Will that make me better?” “No,” the doctor replied, “but it’s the only food that’ll fit under the door.”

Road racket

We were at a red light when a car pulled up, its music blasting. “He’ll be deaf before he’s 25,” I said. “That won’t help us,” my wife replied. “He’ll only turn it up.”

Taking the H2O

Shopkeeper: Good morning Sir! How may I help you? Customer: Why does this bottled water cost so much? It’s £20 per litre! Shop Keeper: Sir, this is pure water from an ancient glacier of the Alps. That’s why it is very costly. Customer: Pure water from the Alps, huh? Then why is the date of expiration October 2017?

Young Deer A young deer in the woods learned to use all four hooves equally well... He was known to be bambidextrous.

Cupboard love After weeks of getting the cold shoulder from his wife, the unhappy husband finally confronted her. “Admit it, Linda. The only reason you married me is because my grandfather left me £10 million.” “Don’t be ridiculous,” she replied. “I don’t care who left it to you.”

Wedding text A father texts his son: “My dear son, today is a day you will treasure for all the days of your life. My best love and good wishes. Your Father.” His son texts back: “Thanks Dad. But the wedding isn’t actually until tomorrow!” His Father replies: “I know.”

False news One morning when I was seven, my Mum was lecturing me about an untruth I told her. In response I said, “Honest Mum, I didn’t know I was lying. I thought I was just making it up.”

Wake up call A man and his wife were having some problems at home and were giving each other the silent treatment. Suddenly, the man realised that the next day, he would need his wife to wake him at 5:00 AM for an early morning business flight. Not wanting to be the first to break the silence (and LOSE), he wrote on a piece of paper, “Please wake me at 5:00 AM.” He left it where he knew she would find it. The next morning, the man woke up, only to discover it was 9:00 AM and he had missed his flight. Furious, he was about to go and see why his wife didn’t wake him up, when he noticed a piece of paper by the bed. The paper said, “It is 5:00 AM. Wake up.”

“Class, do you know how many hours you are wasting on your smart phones daily?” A quiet hush falls over the class. One student breaks it up. “I know, Sir, let’s Google it!”

You Cupid Boy

I don’t know why Cupid was chosen to represent Valentine’s Day... When I think about romance, the last thing on my mind is a short, chubby toddler coming at me with a weapon.

Jogging for money

A man opens an outdoor stand to sell bagels and puts up a sign, “50 pence each.” A jogger runs past and puts 50 pence into the bucket but doesn’t take a bagel. The next day, he does the same thing. For weeks and then months, this goes on. One day, as he’s jogging past, the owner joins him. The jogger laughs and says, “I know why you’re here. You want to know why I always put money in the bucket and never take a bagel?” “No,” says the owner, “not that. I just want to tell you that the bagels have gone up to 60 pence.”

How to borrow money

John: “Can you loan me a hundred pounds?” Fred: “I don’t have that much on me.” John: “Well, just give me what you have and you can owe me the rest.”

Sorry I’ll feel that again

I went to the opticians the other day... Guess who I bumped into? Everyone!

Two snakes are walking down the street.

Mother knows best

I was trying to decide what to do for a talent show I planned to enter. Trusting my mother to help me out, I asked, “For the talent show, what do you think I should do, sing or put on a comedy act?” Glancing up from her paper, she said dryly, “What’s the difference?”

Typical HR

“I proposed to my girl friend last night, who just got promoted to a HR position earlier in the day.” “That is cool! What did she say?” She said, “We will get back to you soon.”

Undercover detective

A tourist asks a man in uniform, “Are you a policeman?” “No, I am an undercover detective.” “So why are you in uniform?” “Today is my day off.”

Wife Wanted

A man inserted an ‘ad’ in the classifieds: “Wife wanted.” Next day he received a hundred letters. They all said the same thing... “You can have mine!”

Parting comment

A wife got so mad at her husband she packed his bags and told him to get out. As he walked to the door she yelled, “I hope you die a long, slow, painful death.” He turned around and said, “So, you want me to stay?”

Sales opportunity

My boss called me into his office today. “We both know you’re not the brightest spark here, Simon,” he said, “but over the last five years you’ve never been sick or late and I think you deserve a reward. So, how does a brand new car sound?” “Vrooom! Vrooooom!” I replied.

“Oh man,I have to ask you something,” the little one said. “What is it?”

Brain drain

The brain is a wonderful organ... It starts working the day you are born, and stops the day you fall in love...

Quick as a...

A tourist was visiting a small village near Bognor. He approached a local person and asked, “What’s the quickest way to Chichester?” The local, scratched her head, “Are ya walkin’ er drivin’?” she asked the stranger. “I’m driving,” said the stranger. “Well, that’s the quickest way.”

Time for more pay

I told my boss that three companies were after me, so I needed a raise in pay to stay with the current job. He asked which companies? I told him gas, electric, and cable.

My sales manager is magic A magician comes up to our table and does a card trick. Impressed, I asked him how he did it. He says, “I can tell you, but I’d then have to kidnap you and take you away.” I said, “Can you tell my sales manager?”

Sales licence

A guy asks a music shop owner what the difference is between a violin and a fiddle. “Well,” the shop owner replied, “when I buy it it’s a fiddle. When I sell it, it’s a violin.”

Halloween funnies for the month end

Why do ghouls and demons get on so well? Because demons are a ghoul’s best friend. A skeleton once wanted to go to a party but then he realised he had NO-BODY to go with. Why did the haunted house not like rain? Because it dampened his spirits.

“Are we dangerous? You know,venomous?”

39

Family resemblance

A child asked his dad, “How were people born?” So his dad said, “Adam and Eve made babies, then their babies became adults and made babies, and so on.” The child then went to his mum, asked her the same question and she told him, “We were monkeys then we evolved to become like we are now.” The child ran back to his dad and said, “You lied to me!” He replied, “No, your mother was talking about her side of the family.”

Haunted Castle

A young American tourist goes on a guided tour of a creepy old castle. At the end of the tour, the guide asks her how she enjoyed it. She admits to being a bit worried about seeing a ghost in some of the dark, cobweb filled, rooms and passages. “Don’t worry,” says the guide. “I’ve never seen a ghost all the time I’ve been here.” “How long is that?” asks the girl. “About three hundred years.”

More spooky shorts

What kind of cereal do monsters eat? Ghost-Toasties. Mummy, mummy, teacher keeps saying I look like a werewolf. Be quiet, dear, and go and comb your face. What kind of monster is safe to put in the washing machine? A wash and wear wolf. What’s the first thing ghosts do when they get into a car? They bookle their seatbelts. What has webbed feet, feathers, fangs and goes quack-quack? Count Duckula. What game do little cannibals like to play at parties? Swallow the leader. Why are monsters huge and hairy and ugly? Because if they were small and round and smooth they’d be M&Ms.

The other one said, “Of course we are, why?” “Because I just bit myself!”
