Print Framework Shame Dismay in the Scottish print industry as another major Government contract goes beyond our shores — By Iain Robertson. It is not edifying — in fact, it is deeply unsettling — to see a once strong and dynamic Scottish industry in a state of apprehension, not to say fear, about its future. But that is the pass at which we have arrived as Scotland’s print industry, which employs between 4,000 and 6,000 people, waits to see if it is about to lose its biggest client at the stroke of a pen — a pen wielded, ironically, by the Scottish Government. The signs are not good, and the upshot of what is happening in the sector at the moment could be that work for public bodies — the most important income stream in the business — will become, and remain, out of the reach of all but the biggest of Scottish printers. It is a course of action which flies in the face of the Government’s oft-stated intention to share the public sector cake more equitably, and to make sure that SMEs get at least a few crumbs from the table. The focus of the industry’s concern is the new Print and Associated Services (PAS) Framework Agreement which is due to come into effect in March next year. It covers the print needs of some 53 public bodies. There has, as yet, been no feedback from a consultation by Scottish Procurement on whether this vital agreement should be structured as a single supplier or a multisupplier portfolio and in fact the stated deadline date for information on this, the 17thAugust, has passed without comment. The industry is unanimously in favour of a multi-supplier approach, since the alternative would create, in effect, a monopoly which would defeat the Government’s public aim of wider access, smaller contracts and a bias towards SMEs. As I say, there has been no feedback but if the industry were looking for straws in the Holyrood wind, its collective heart must have sunk at the end of July when a similar framework agreement was disclosed — to a fanfare of no publicity at all. This was the Publishing, Print, Design and Associated Services (PPDAS) agreement, which covers services to central government, blue light agencies, universities, the Third Sector and other public bodies. To hardly anyone’s surprise, it was awarded to the incumbent — the giant, Manchesterbased APS Group, which styles itself as an “international marketing and customer communications company”. By the time the current arrangement — which is advertised as worth £70 million — expires,

the APS Group will almost certainly have held the contract for 15 years and there will be no printer left in Scotland big enough to challenge for it. The Government has, wittingly or not, created an enduring monopoly. Is the same thing about to happen with the PAS agreement, the only other significant, Scottish Government controlled source of income for what remains of Scotland’s indigenous print industry? Anyone reading the runes could be forgiven for pessimism. For instance, the new PPDAS contract included a host of new agencies with bidders requiring a minimum annual turnover of £7.5m to take part. The message is clear: only the big boys are allowed to play in this game. This, at least, is consistent with instinctive inclination of public bodies to always go along the path of least resistance and engage with the top of the range, most expensive option, usually from the biggest national or multinational companies. Small local companies are perceived as just too much of a gamble, despite them having the locality, the ability and the flexibility to deliver what could be perceived as a more cost effective and specialised service. The effect is that work which should be going to Scottish concerns — and which the Government has declared should go to Scottish firms — is being diverted to the international market by risk-averse procurement officials. Put bluntly, the Scottish print industry is in the process of being offshored. An accumulation of other factors — paper

prices up 15% in 12 months, Brexit volatility and the squeeze on suppliers — add up to an air of gloom in the Scottish print world which is increasingly difficult to dispel. To add to our difficulties, many large Scottish businesses and Scottish financial institutions such as banks and insurance companies, spend well in excess of £100m of print out with Scotland, the majority of which could be produced in this country. It is not too late for Scottish Procurement to listen to the concerns of a sector which, given a level playing field, could be viable, vibrant and a social and fiscal contributor. Many traditional Scottish industries such as coal and steel have disappeared over the year but print need not fall into that category. Our industry could be saved if all of, or at least the majority of, the print generated in Scotland was produced here. The alternative is to watch it go the way of shipbuilding, deep mining and the car industry and to our members, and the wider print community, this is unacceptable and avoidable. Streets Process Colour expands trade service Streets Process Colour has chosen three Renz systems from The Binding Store to bring high quality wire binding in house. The Baldock litho, digital, web and large format print service provider will also offer a trade service following its investment in a new Renz AP360 high speed automatic punching system and a fully refurbished Renz Punch 500 ES and RSB 360 wire binder. Managing Director Richard Street explains: “Just over two years ago we decided to start bringing all our finishing services in-house. This was to reduce the turnaround times and ensure we had full control over the whole process. “We also recently won a big contract from the Salvation Army to wire bind work and that convinced us the time was right to make the investment. Now we can look to offer wire binding as a trade service and we will be the only operation in our area to do so. We know there is the demand.” The AP360 features a two-finger paper pick-up system, which can handle a range of mixed stock, fast die-changes, and has optional two part split dies for book and calendar work. It has the additional option of a touch screen with job memory which aids set-up, together with a paternoster feeding system for continuous production. It sits alongside the versatile Renz P500 ES. It can handle all types of books and calendar punching production with ring wire, plastic comb and coil options. It enables fast die changes and incorporates two part split dies for book and calendar work. It has a QSA (Quick Size Adjustment) for high flexibility of different paper formats, horizontal paper feeding and can handle a wide range of mixed stocks. Completing the trio is the quiet, easy to use 2000cph RSB 360 that is completely equipped for binding wire diameters ranging from ¼ inch to 1inch 3:1 and 2:1 pitch. It can bind widths up to 360 mm while the closing unit is adjustable for books up to 20 mm thick. Adds Street: “We did look at what was available on the market but we liked the Renz systems because of their level of automation. They were

easy to use, quick to set up and very cost effective. There is no need to spend lots of time getting jobs on them so we can be very productive very quickly. “They have been a good investment for us already and will pay for themselves very quickly,” he continues. “We have only just started to push the service actively. Now we know we can meet fast turnaround times confidently and to a very high quality we are going to promote it more widely — particularly to the trade.” www.renz.co.uk

Positive celebrates 25 years Mitcham, Surrey based Positive Images UK celebrates 25 years of successful trading. Managing Director, Danny Sullivan attributes the company’s success to investing in the latest technology, diversifying at the right times and always striving for perfection. Danny says: “I am very proud of the way the company has progressed. We’ve grown our family business from a single printing press into a multichannel marketing provider”. Devil is in the Detail goes from teaching to learning Michael Hawes spent 18 years in the education sector but this summer turned the tables to receive training himself, in digital printing and vehicle wrapping. The result is Devil is in the Detail, a brand-new vehicle wrap and signage business running a Roland DG TrueVIS VG640 printer/cutter. “I have friends in the car industry and was looking for a career change,” explains Michael. “Around 18 months ago I started researching offering dent repairs and cosmetic vehicle work. This developed into Devil is in the Detail, a vehicle graphics business — a very different challenge to education.” Perhaps as a result of his former career, Michael made sure he spent time studying the market and the right technology for this kind of work before launching his business in Selby, Yorkshire. Online research, trade shows and suppliers’ open days led him to Roland distributor Your Print Specialists (YPS) and the Roland TrueVIS VG-640. This combination inkjet printer/cutter offers a wide colour gamut, fast printing and drying, accurate cutting and remote operation — ideal for graphics businesses of any size. Devil is in the Detail moved into its own unit in mid-June, while Michael was still wrapping up his educational provision work and is now running the TrueVIS full-time on an unexpected range of applications.

“Initially my use for the machine was going to be vehicle graphics and digital wraps, but as word of mouth has spread with the machine’s capabilities I am already getting requests for banners and signage too,” says Micheal. “I thought, ‘I may as well make the most of the machine’.” The TrueVIS can handle these applications and more: die-cut labels and decals, posters and backlit displays, wall graphics and murals, fine art and photography, and heat transfers for apparel are all easy to achieve on this integrated print-and-cut system. Michael adds: “I don’t originally come from a print background and I find the TrueVIS straightforward to use. I like the integrated print and cut, the take-up unit is brilliant and it really is a multi-purpose machine.” Undertaking training to maximise his investment in the TrueVIS — despite its integral

ease of use — was essential to Michael, who is as detail-focused as his business’s name suggests. “I attended Roland’s intermediate print course at Coventry University, which filled gaps in my knowledge such as colour management. I also went on the Introduction to Digital Print course at the Roland Creative Centre in Clevedon — the space really opens up your eyes as to the endless opportunities offered by Roland digital print.” Already busy just weeks into his new career, Michael Hawes simply wants to establish Devil is in the Detail in Selby. “I want to make a name for myself by committing to doing a great job,” he says. “Training with the Roland Academy is helping me on my way.” For more information on Devil is in the Detail, please visit www.devilisinthedetail.co.uk www.rolanddg.com

HP ‘Pink Ream’ fights breast cancer in 2018 International Paper has announced it will continue its Pink Ream campaign in support of saving lives from breast cancer. International Paper is collaborating this year with Think Pink Europe, which brings together national breast cancer initiatives across the continent. The Pink Ream campaign was launched in Europe in 2017 with distinctive, specially designed packaging for reams of HP Office paper. For each Pink Ream sold in the UK International Paper donated £0.10 to programmes focusing on breast cancer research, awareness and prevention. A total of €198,000 was contributed across Europe and in March 2018 the campaign was selected as ‘Initiative of the Year’ in the 17th European Office Products Awards (EOPA) competition. Think Pink Europe, International Paper’s partner in the 2018 campaign, unites over a dozen national breast cancer organisations, with the list still growing. All across Europe local breast cancer organisations, hospitals, support groups and governmental organisations are aiming for the same objective: funding research and raising awareness to tackle breast cancer. Among the many activities supported by Think Pink Europe, their flagship initiative is The Race for the Cure®, the world’s biggest walking and running event in the fight

against breast cancer. The HP Office Pink Ream will be available throughout October (which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month). International Paper has again committed to a minimum contribution of €100,000. Of the total amount raised, 80% will be donated to local associations and 20% will be invested in programmes through Think Pink Europe. In its fight against the disease, International Paper Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA) is following the lead of its parent organisation in the United States. Since launching the HP Office Pink Ream in 2007, International Paper has donated more than $700,000 to breast cancer research. This and similar initiatives express International Paper’s commitment to community engagement, part of the company’s approach of creating value for all stakeholders for generations to come. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Europe. It affects one in eight women, with 500,000 cases diagnosed annually and 130,000 deaths every year. The risk of contracting the disease can be reduced by 30-40% by focusing on modifiable risk factors, such as obesity, alcohol consumption, nutrition and exercise. Route 1 to have UK’s first Landa S10P Nanographic Press The South Yorkshire trade printer began their annual investment in May with the investment of two Screen TruePress Jet520HDs and has showed no signs of slowing down, with five further purchases and now the investment of the Landa S10P. Unveiled at drupa back in 2012, the Landa S10P makes use of the Nanographic ink process, offering more than the conventional CMYK colours but also being able to print OGB, covering up to 95% of Pantones, eliminating the need for creating spot colours. The B1 double sided digital press is capable of printing up to 6,500 sheets an hour and is expected to further bridge the economical gap between digital and litho printing. “We were incredibly impressed when we first saw the S10P,” says Adam Carnell, Managing Director. “The use of Nanographic ink can offer even further sharpness and colour, delivering quality our customers expect.” He goes on to say “The partnership with Landa seemed natural as we are both looking for creative solutions we can bring to the market. We’re all incredibly excited to see how this innovation can improve both efficiency and the service we offer our customers. This is ground-breaking technology and we predict this area of the market is going to explode in the near future. We believe it will enable an accelerated shift from the print-to-warehouse model to a print on demand practice”

Yishai Amir, CEO of Landa Digital Printing adds “Adam and his team are building a fantastic business which we are honoured to be partnering with. The Landa S10P and Route 1 Print are a perfect match, with a shared passion for innovation. I look forward to a long and successful relationship.” Currently Route 1 Print is working closely with Landa to integrate their MIS with the press. The printer aims to create a bespoke solution that will allow a full web-to-print system. The press is expected to arrive at the South Yorkshire facility at the beginning of 2019 and to be within the factory workflow in the following weeks. Following its arrival Route 1 Print will be inviting people to go and see the press in action and inspect its print quality for themselves. www.route1print.co.uk

New Mimaki TS55 textile printing Hybrid Services has announced the launch of the Mimaki TS55-1800; a revolutionary new digital heat transfer sublimation printer that brings high-end features to entry and mid-level markets. These include high-speed, one-pass printing at a high-resolution and ink-density, unattended printing with the new Mini Jumbo Roll and Mimaki’s Nozzle Check and Recovery System for continuous operation. With the release of the TS55-1800, Mimaki delivers on making high end digital textile printing features available to a much broader market. Now, textile professionals can effortlessly scale their operation with an affordable sublimation printer that meets the high quality and fast turnaround times demanded in the dynamic textile and apparel industry. The new model prints at a resolution of 480 x 600dpi with a high ink density using one pass printing at 140 sqm/h. In addition, the unique Mimaki Advanced Pass System (MAPS4) improves the quality of two pass printing by eliminating banding. The TS55-1800 achieves all this with low running costs and the high productivity and reliability that Mimaki products are known for. “The TS55-1800 is a breakthrough digital textile printer, that will surely cause a stir in the market,” says Bert Benckhuysen, senior product manager at Mimaki Europe. “It has been designed from the ground up to deliver high quality, industry leading productivity and an operational cost that will be hard to beat.” Unattended printing — One of the key features of the TS55-1800 is the optional use of a new Mini Jumbo Roll unit that can continuously feed 2,500 linear metres of heat transfer paper to the printer. This enables customers to substitute the use of Small Plotter Rolls with Mini Jumbo Rolls, which can save them over 20% in print media cost. Furthermore, Mini Jumbo Rolls of Mimaki Vision Jet-X transfer paper, supplied by Neenah Coldenhove, will be offered as a package deal with the TS551800. The 2,500 m1 Mini Jumbo Rolls are the ideal way to upgrade to

high volume unattended textile printing. In addition, the printer is fitted with Mimaki’s unique Nozzle Check and Recovery System and 10 litre ink tanks, which ensure failsafe continuous operation for extended periods, such as unattended overnight printing. “The new TS55-1800 is another outstanding textile printer from Mimaki,” comments Hybrid’s Chief Operations Manager, Brett Newman. “It presents substantial opportunities to UK and Irish textile companies for increasing productivity whilst reducing unit costs.” Higher profitability — Mimaki offers its customers a high return on investment with the TS55-1800 that will be sold at a very competitive price-point. “The Mimaki TS55-1800 offers the best specifications for the best price,” states Benckhuysen. “According to our projections, textile professionals can reduce their operational cost by using this new printer and double their annual profit. This is truly revolutionary, and we believe it will make a huge contribution to the ongoing analogue to digital transformation underway in the industry.” www.hybridservices.co.uk

Duplo and EFI Fiery integration Electronics For Imaging, and Duplo have announced a new, timesaving integration between EFI’s Fiery® production workflow for digital print devices and Duplo’s Slitter/ Cutter/Creasers. This new offering allows for efficient, automated imposition layout and production from prepress through the finishing stages delivering precise throughput faster and saving up to 70% of setup time. “EFI and Duplo customers will definitely save time by eliminating the need for manual data entry and setup of finishing information in Fiery digital printing workflows,” said Peter Dyson, product launch leader at Duplo International Ltd. “Our collaborative efforts for this automated solution will also reduce human setup errors, plus users now will have the ability to quickly verify job designs with a visual preview of finishing lines before printing.” Available for the DC-746 Slitter/Cutter/ Creaser model now and later for the DC-646 Slitter/Cutter/Creaser, the new integration connects Duplo devices to Fiery Impose software, giving users an automatically generated, accurate preview of slit, cut, and

crease locations in their printing jobs. Users can also save new layouts as templates to automate imposition on future jobs. And, using Fiery Impose’s existing Duplo barcode support, users can load printed jobs directly into the DC646 and DC-746 and let the finisher perform automatic setup for the job based on the barcode. A video on automating print finishing workflows with Fiery Impose is available at https://tinyurl.com/y8vpmm7w. The integration has significantly improved

efficiency at EFI and Duplo customer Global Print, Inc., in Glendale, California. “After implementing the EFI Fiery Impose integration, our projects now move even faster in our finishing production environment while maintaining high quality and accuracy,” said Ken Kaypekian, Global Print’s sales manager. “Planning our job layouts first on our Duplo DC-746 and then moving it to our Fiery Impose environment, instead of the other way around, has been a much more efficient workflow and the accuracy is now phenomenal.” “Manual processes in digital print production workflows create bottlenecks that take up too much time, so this new integration for Fiery workflows with Duplo devices is an important new development for customers,” said Georg Hollenbach, senior director, Fiery sales in Europe. The new integration feature is currently available through a firmware update delivered online for the Duplo DC-746’s PC Controller software. Support for the Duplo DC-646 will be available later this year. www.efi.com

New Canon imagePROGRAF TM Series The imagePROGRAF TM Series has been designed to meet demand for a productive, robust, large format printer for environments that require smaller volumes of high quality prints, with a compact footprint and less noise. The new printers are built on the proven technology of the large format imagePROGRAF TX Series, which has been very successful in the market since its commercial launch in December 2017. The new imagePROGRAF TM models add to Canon’s large format technology portfolio, which also includes the imagePROGRAF PRO Series for photographic and fine art applications. The new imagePROGRAF TM Series features eight different models, all aimed at customers printing low to mid volumes. The five 36-inch models are: TM-300; TM-305 (with built-in HDD and PDF support); TM-300MFP L36ei (multifunctional printer with low-volume scanning solution); TM-300MFP T36 (multifunctional printer with higher scanning solution); TM-305MFP T36 (high performance multifunctional printer). The three 24-inch models are: TM-200; TM-205 (with built-in HDD and PDF support); TM-200MFP L24ei (multifunctional printer with low-volume scanning solution). The imagePROGRAF TM Series are compact and quiet devices optimised for spaceconstrained environments. The printer’s footprint is as small as 982 x 887 mm for the TM-200/205 models, a reduction of 9% compared to the imagePROGRAF iPF Series. The new imagePROGRAF TM Series has been developed to meet the demands of quieter environments to ensure minimal distraction. Without compromising on high productivity, enhancements have been made to some primary noise sources; the Platen Suction

Fan now includes a damping structure; the media cutter cuts cleaner which reduces vibrations; the media feeding technology has been developed with the line-feeding motor being slowed and motor pulley diameter being enlarged to also reduce media vibrations. The enhancements have contributed to a reduction in noise by 60% in comparison to the imagePROGRAF iPF Series. The intuitive operation panel means that users do not require training or specialist skills to operate the device, enabling employees to produce high quality prints in the workplace with ease. The new imagePROGRAF TM Series aims to make it easy to produce creative and complex applications, with the newly improved software tools. PosterArtist V3.0 poster creation software helps operators to produce multilingual posters with over 900 expressions in 10 different languages and using over 350 templates and images, while Free Layout Plus

offers a template tool for the design of folded posters. The imagePROGRAF TM Series boasts Canon’s LUCIA TD five colour pigment inks. This unique ink, which includes MBK with high surface tension, produces lines and text that are dense and crisp with minimal feathering. Vibrant colours can also be produced from LUCIA TD ink with pigments staying closer to the media surface. This enables customers to economically print high quality documents and posters on inexpensive uncoated plain paper. The LUCIA TD water resistant five colour pigment inks used for the imagePROGRAF TM Series can print on water resistant media, offering immediate benefits for customers producing plans and drawings that need to be viewed outside, or creating posters for outdoor use. With the imagePROGRAF TM Series, businesses have the capability to produce CAD drawings, GIS maps and posters on demand and in-house, reducing outsourcing costs and response times. For continuous printing of drawings on A1 landscape plain paper in the fastest mode, the imagePROGRAF TM-300/305 can produce 144 prints per hour, which represents an increase in speed of up to 23% compared to its predecessor, the imagePROGRAF iPF series, thanks to improved print head scanning and reduced time between processing each print. ‘Hot swap’ ink tanks enable users to replace inks during printing for continuous production. There is also the option to add one of Global Scanning’s fast, high quality scanners, including the T36 scanner with a user-friendly touchscreen display, to the imagePROGRAF TM Series creating the perfect multifunctional office companion. www.canon.co.uk

Canon launches Océ ColorWave 3000 wide format Canon has launched the new Océ ColorWave 3000 series of large format printers for customers specialising in CAD, GIS and shortterm graphic arts applications. With the Océ ColorWave 3000 series, customers have the flexibility to easily print an even wider range of applications from black and white technical documents, drawings and maps, to full colour indoor and short-term outdoor graphics such as posters and roll-up banners. The new Océ ColorWave 3000 series comprises two different models: the Océ ColorWave 3500 and the Océ ColorWave 3700, both meeting the needs of businesses operating at mid-volumes, and both saving businesses time, resulting in a faster return on investment. Consistent colour quality — The new printers incorporate the 10-year proven Océ CrystalPoint technology that combines the best of toner and inkjet in Océ TonerPearls, which are melted into a toner gel that crystallises onto the media. Since the introduction of the Océ CrystalPoint technology in 2008, Canon has installed more than 10,000 engines worldwide, based on this technology. Océ CrystalPoint grants customers the option to work with lower cost media without compromising on quality. Prints made with the Océ CrystalPoint technology are instantly dry, enabling handling, stacking and folding to take place immediately. The use of Océ TonerPearls ensures strong adhesion and scratch-resistance, as well as offers sharp lines with minimal feathering for

To avoid misprints and delays, Océ Publisher Select enables customers to automatically preview print jobs. To support this, Océ Print Assistant automatically suggests the right print mode for the job, detecting media requirements, so that the printer switches to the most appropriate media roll without the need for manual intervention. The Océ Folder Express 3011, Océ Folder Professional 6011/6013 and Océ Stacker Select provide a compact print to finish solution, offering an automated folding and stacking capability for working environments in which fast production is required. Suitable for space-constrained office environments, the Océ ColorWave 3000 series with Folder Express 3011 has a footprint of 25% less than its predecessors, the Océ ColorWave 500 and ColorWave 700, with their respective folding capabilities. Beyond technical applications — The Océ ColorWave 3000 series is easy to use and enables customers to offer new services and applications beyond black and white technical drawings, attracting greater volumes and higher quality work. The Océ ColorWave 3700 supports close to 40 different media types and media up to 800 μm. With Océ MediaSense technology, the print gap between the media and the print head is automatically adjusted to the optimum distance, allowing businesses to print on an even wider range of media, including uncoated paper. www.canon.co.uk

high quality documents and graphics. Océ TonerPearls prints are also waterproof, enabling businesses to produce applications for shortterm outdoor use. The Océ ColorWave 3000 series also features Océ PAINT (Piezo Acoustic Integrated Nozzle Technology) that helps to overcome nozzle failure on the fly for predictable and consistent print quality, reducing daily maintenance time. Print-to-finish — The Océ ColorWave 3500 has a media capacity of up to four rolls and customers can automatically switch between media for faster production. The Océ ColorWave 3700 has a media capacity of up to six rolls, handling up to 1200 m, and can print up to 368m² posters per day in fast mode. The Océ ColorWave 3000 series features the Océ ClearConnect software suite, helping businesses to manage complex print jobs and offer a more flexible and intuitive interface when submitting print files to the printer.

Taopix launch Ai Label Photo Commerce Software Taopix, is launching a fully AI enabled version of its software platform for the intelligent creation of photo books and similar multiimage photo gift products. The photo book sector suffers from an alarming metric. 70% of all photo book projects started are never completed. The value of the photo book market worldwide is estimated at $4bn. If 70% of all projects started are left unfinished, that would indicate that there is a significant amount of money being left on the table. It’s widely believed that the most significant factors at the heart of this worrying statistic are the time and the effort it takes to make a photo book. While for some this is a worthwhile pastime, for many others it appears to put them off finishing the projects they have started. “We have been looking in to AI for a number of years, primarily as a means to make photo book creation easier and quicker.” says James Gray,

CEO and Founder at Taopix. “It has taken quite some time to find a technology that is right for the job and can reliably build books using AI. Building the books automatically and quickly is one thing, but the books have to be beautiful and meaningful as well.” continues Gray. “We felt an absolute obligation to build AI in to our product and help our customers solve the eternal problem of project abandonment.’ says Nigel Lee, Executive Chairman at Taopix. “It simply could not be left to the industry giants to dominate the market. The benefits to the end consumer of this technology are enormous and everyone in the industry should have the ability

to offer an AI based product, regardless of size or scale.” continues Lee. “We firmly believe that Taopix.ai will give all of our customers an amazing advantage in acquiring customers online. We are convinced that our AI solution will dramatically increase conversion rates and significantly reduce project abandonment whether choosing to make photo books offline, online or on a mobile device.” adds Lee. “We believe we’ve built the Holy Grail and that this technology can help our customers unlock the billions of dollars of potential growth opportunity still left in the sector.” concludes Lee. Taopix.ai has been built in an exclusive partnership with Muvee in Singapore. It will be formally launched at Photokina in Cologne and will be available for pre-ordering at the show and thereafter. Taopix.ai is will be released in Q1 2019. www.taopix.com/get-in-touch

PIXEL PROPHET

THE MYTHS AND THE MAGIC Following on from last month, where Martin Christie compared the claims of some top of the range phones against their practical image performance alongside even medium quality digital cameras, it’s appropriate to take another look at the jargon that confuses the resolution issue, and re-assess some of the accepted guidelines that have become also mythical.

[S]

ome of the confusion is historic from the early days of electronic imaging, but more recent is from the competing statistics of pixel counting, megapixel quotas and what is, and is not, high definition. The number 72 has taken on almost legendary status, whether counted in dots per inch or pixels per inch, for print or web, because it is still the default format of most digital cameras, and was a convenient formula for older monitors, websites, as well as a handy size for email. But that figure is now a part of history as the variety of display devices, and their viewing size, has just rocketed along with the speed with which both large stills and fast moving images can be downloaded. It’s the number of pixels and the size of the display that’s the important figure, as well as being an essential in the equation for print. Modern laptops of around 15 inches have a display of 1920x1080 pixels which will work out at about 130ppi depending on actual size, whereas an iPhone 7 5.5inch with the same number of pixels rates at 401ppi. On the other hand a so-called HD television of about 40 inches will be kicking out about 40ppi, which doesn’t sound so impressive in the scale of things, but then you won’t be watching a football match with your nose pushed against the screen. From a couch six to ten foot away it will look fine. If you can get your head around that relationship it may make it easier to explain to a customer why the nice image on their little phone won’t work on a one metre square canvas, because you will be inspecting it at close quarters, and anything less than perfect will look awful because it’s going to sit on someone’s wall for a long time and not just be shut down after the final whistle. Even minor defects, once spotted, will start to get really annoying. We can now also dispel that other old chestnut, the 300dpi standard for printing, which was a target when file sizes were so small they struggled to fill a 1.4Mb floppy disc, but is much less of a yardstick when digital dimensions can be measured in metres, and as long as there is

Photo © Lourdes Barragen Llorens

enough information to prevent the printer filling in the gaps, it will be fine. What you have to be careful of is not throwing away essential pixels by actually downsizing to 300dpi rather than the other way around. As well as pixel quantity, pixel quality is equally important, and this is where the calibre of the original capture device becomes an issue, and where marketing hype has a sharp reality check. Because the camera is capturing light it’s obvious that it deserves the best possible view. If you have a nice big, clean window, you have a better look at the world than looking through a pokey little wormhole. That’s basic physics as well as common sense, so it should be equally obvious that using a tiny lens and relying on the electronics to interpret what it sees has a fundamental flaw. Several hundred years of developing precision optics can’t be so easily dismissed and replaced with a processor however sophisticated it claims to be. It comes down to how accurate the sensor is. We know all about sensors because we have millions of them all over our body that tell our brain when they are too hot or too cold, when they experience pain or pressure for example. The accuracy comes down to how well they can

measure a particular effect, and that of course can vary for whatever reason. The light sensors in digital cameras are essentially very similar. What we call the resolution is a matter of the smallest change it can detect in the light falling upon it. But that resolution is only part of the equation because it doesn’t completely describe the precision with which that information is recorded. That’s why statistics of megapixels can be deceptive, especially with small cameras and lenses, and before we even consider the processor translating it all into a final digital output. So you may have lots of pixels but the image may not be sharp or entirely reflect the original colours. This is not always the camera’s fault, as we have pointed out before. Most people fire away on entirely automated settings regardless of conditions and simply expect the device to sort the mess out. And not entirely the customer’s fault as they’ve been sold the line that the phone will do everything you need. It’s just frustrating at the printing end when you receive a file shot on a phone and scroll down the metadata and see it’s been shot at way beyond any realistic operating settings — like a shutter speed of one eleventh of a second. That’s so slow even if it was bolted to a

Quick Print Pro • Digital Imaging

October 2018

block of concrete there would be time enough for minute movement fluctuation to cause blur. And as it will also be shot at the widest lens aperture, at the very edge of performance because there is so little light illuminating the original target, any recognition of actual colour is a matter of chance. That you can reproduce anything at all is a miracle, let alone something that vaguely corresponds to what is expected. One of the things that affects the performance of an image sensor is actually fundamental to the way it works. It transfers information about light and colour by means of an electrical charge, just as a basic photocopier does — turning analogue input into digital output. In doing so it generates an interference called noise; created by the irregular shift in light and heat on the sensor or in the circuits, and much like the irritating background crackles in audio signals, it can produce unpleasant patches in an otherwise seamless image. Noise is more common in smaller sensors, where the pixels are packed together in a tight environment, and the problem is that any filter introduced to try and reduce it will tend to reduce the actual sharpness of the output. At the other extreme, big professional cameras with large sensors suffer from the fact that they are almost over sensitive and pick up any slight discrepancy in focus or stability. If anything they tend to magnify issues that might not be a problem with smaller ones. So getting a ‘better’ camera isn’t always the panacea it might at first appear. That’s why digital photography has hit a bit of a ceiling in the short term — at least till we see another breakthrough in sensor technology. Squeezing them smaller, or making them bigger isn’t the answer in itself. The problem for the camera is that as a portable device, it has to be light enough to be mobile with its own power source, be able to focus on subjects at various distances, and record them in a fraction of a second and at a fixed size. Compare this to a dedicated flatbed scanner which has all the time in the world in comparison to capture an image, and can vary the size and speed, and thereby the resolution of this action. The scanner doesn’t have to zoom or focus other than just a mere fraction above the glass, and the lens is not fixed but moves across and below the subject. The resolution of a scanner is often measured in single lines, say 6400 pixels, as this is the short edge, the long edge moves to suit the size of the scan whether A4 or A3 dimensions for

vivid-online.com

example. The scanner scans along a single line and simply adds more dots per line as it moves to suit the output resolution, therefore taking longer to record more dots if a higher resolution is required. It simply adjusts the speed of the motor that drives the lens to match the dpi selected. This is why a good scanner will always record more detail for a given subject than a good camera, but also why a dedicated scanner is preferable to using the copy device on top of a digital printer for quality results. Some things are just too big to scan, or for

various reasons need to be photographed, rather than placed on the glass. But it does need a professional to advise a customer on the best approach, and it’s very satisfying if they actually listen to you. One of the most rewarding things I’ve been involved in over the last year has been working on projects with a couple of young people who have severe behavioural and communication problems but have a natural talent for art, and fortunate enough to have parents who were willing and able to encourage them. It has been a bit of a learning curve for all involved, including me, but when the end result is several successful and highly praised public exhibitions of both originals and prints, it does make it all worthwhile. It may seem to be stating the obvious that a print is the ultimate test of an image’s quality and clarity, and I’ve often pointed that out in these columns. But when that statement is put to very direct public scrutiny and comparison it is actually quite humbling, especially being in the interests of a very good cause. So often you never get to see the results of all that stress in context. You never get the reward for all that last minute panic and pressure to perform. It all goes straight out of the door and the client takes the credit. You often only get recognition when it all goes wrong. But just once in a while you get to see the very real pleasure your work can inspire, and appreciate that you can make a difference. This is where the real magic happens! www.aidas-art.com http://henrynormal.com/art-by-johnny/

THE PRINT SHOW 2018

PRINT SHOW REVIEW The Print Show, which ran last month at the NEC in Birmingham, had not yet closed its doors as went to press. We have gathered these first cut highlights and expect more next month across the various QPP media channels.

[T]

he Print Show will once again this year offer visitors the opportunity to take a trip through time and visit some of the glory days of years gone by in the industry at the Traditional Print Masterclass. One of the most popular show features since the event debuted in 2015, this area is entirely dedicated to traditional printing techniques that have helped to shape the modern industry. The show welcomed many leading brands that have supported the event for a number of years. Epson has enjoyed a presence at the show since its launch in 2015, while the likes of Konica Minolta, Vivid Laminating Technologies, Morgana and RISO are also long-term backers. Also returning this year was HP, which enjoyed a hugely successful debut at the 2017 show. Duplo launched a range of new finishing kit at the show, while Watkiss and Perfect Bindery Solutions were busy talking visitors through their own finishing technology. Chris Davies, event director for The Print Show, said: “The Print Show 2018 is bigger and better than ever before. So many leading brands have confidence in the event and continue to support us year-on-year. Konica Minolta was one of many returning names at The Print Show showcasing some of its latest solutions to visitors. Elsewhere, Xeikon demonstrated how its technology can be used to produce commercial print, labels and packaging work. Xeikon also highlighted how the “possibilities and synergies” of its digital print production solutions are continuing to expand under its ownership by the Flint Group.

Top highlight at The Print Show 2018 was the first UK public showing of the new Xerox Iridesse with its gamut of gold, silver and clear inks, in addition to CMYK. At the centre of the Duplo stand several new products caught the eye, including the DC-516 Cutter Creaser, the PFI-2100 Binder and an updated iSaddle X Saddle Stitcher Another top finishing brand in the form of Watkiss Automation used this event to launch its new PSQ160-WH hand-feed booklet maker, the

visitors took a break from exploring the show floor and enjoyed a rest in seating areas located under a canopy of trees.

Hybrid shines with innovative Mimaki portfolio latest addition to its PowerSquare range. In addition, finishing specialist Renz unveiled the new F400 HD Cold UV Coater in partnership with Argos Solutions. The Print Show also hosted a series of special, free to access features to help visitors get the most out of their visit. The Traditional Print Master class, Printers’ Bazaar, Business Seminar Theatre and Software Training Theatre all returned this year, with visitors able to attend each area without the need to book. One of the most popular show features since the event debuted in 2015, the Traditional Print Master class offered a glance into print’s past, with visitors able to view printing techniques that have helped to shape the modern industry, as well as produce their own work to take away as a souvenir. The Business Seminar Theatre featured a series of expert speakers, each delivering presentations on some of the major talking points in print. The Software Training Theatre also provided the need to know information for the top software products in the industry and educated visitors about how they can best use these to enhance print output. Elsewhere, the Printers’ Bazaar featured six specialist areas that are designed to offer an insight into major growth markets across print. Duplo educated visitors in the ‘Speciality Print Finishing’ area, while Marqetspace focused on ‘Textile Printing Products’. Meanwhile, The Magic Touch offered great advice on ‘Garment Printing’. New this year was ‘Park Life’, which has been designed to help dispel conceptions that print and paper are bad for the environment. Here,

Hybrid Services returned to The Print Show this year with a wide range of Mimaki kit on display and boasting some tempting product offers. Hybrid demonstrated models from the Mimaki UCJV Series LED UV printer/cutters, giving visitors the opportunity to experience the innovative sign and graphics solution, as Hybrid’s Chief Operations Manager, Brett Newman explains; “The new Mimaki UCJV Series brings revolutionary technology to the print, sign and graphics market, using the very latest LED UV cure inks and offering an unparalleled range of applications from the one machine, making them already very popular with print providers, sign makers and graphics houses.” Mimaki’s key solvent printer, the JV300 series was a pivotal part of the stand, sitting alongside Mimaki’s new LA-160 laminator, which is currently offered free with every JV300 investment. “We’ll have plenty to talk about with sign makers and graphics professionals, especially with our summer Heatwave promotions continuing throughout the duration of the show” continued Newman. “Solutions such as Mimaki’s orange solvent ink, Mimaki’s huge range of vinyl printing hardware and now a continuous workflow with a dedicated laminator make a real difference to users the world over, hence our focus on this significant area.” “In addition to the UCJV series and JV300 printers on show, was the Mimaki’s multi-award winning JFX200 8’ x 4’ flatbed, along with its baby brother, the Mimaki UJF-6042 MkII A2 LED UV flatbed printers for personalisation and promotional items,” concluded Newman. “The popular Mimaki TS30 sublimation transfer printer also starred to demonstrate diversification into soft signage and other promotional items. www.hybridservices.co.uk

Quick Print Pro • Showtime

October 2018

30 years of inspiring P&P show Excitement is now building for Printwear & Promotion LIVE!’s 30th anniversary show. Registration will open online (www. printwearandpromotionlive.co.uk) in the first week of October and with the show occupying both halls 17 and 18 at the NEC, Birmingham, it will be the industry’s biggest ever event! Following the successful switch to January dates this year, which saw a record number of 5,650 individual visitors from over 3,500 businesses in attendance, the show will again take place in January – starting on Sunday January 20 running through to Tuesday January 22. Tony Gardner, the show’s director, comments: “The switch to January enabled many to attend who previously, due to their workload in February, had been unable to do so, while exhibitors had the benefit of showcasing their latest products to the market a month earlier. As a result we have seen a further increase in demand for stand space, thus the 2019 show will be the 9th consecutive year that the show has increased in size!” The only exhibition dedicated to the UK garment decoration industry, the show aims to inspire its visitors, providing a vibrant, dynamic and interactive event with workshops, seminars, advice from industry experts and on stand demonstrations. Garment decoration tips and small business advice will be available from two seminar suites, the Screen Print Workshop returns, while the Fashion Show and a new feature area for 2019, the Skate Ramp, will showcase

garments in action! A one stop shop for printwear professionals, as well as those looking to enter the market, the exhibition is the industry’s annual meeting place and networking event. There will be around 150 stands from all sectors of the garment and product decoration market, including around 60 clothing brands, distributors, and all of the major decoration equipment and accessory suppliers covering direct to garment, sublimation, transfer and screen printing and embroidery. The positive vibe around the show continues to spread with several first time exhibitors booking stands and a number of others, including Roland DG, returning to the show after an absence. As usual the show will again be a launch pad for new equipment, while new garment lines and ranges from existing and new exhibitors will be showcased. So go and be inspired by joining the 30th anniversary show. For more information visit www.printwearandpromotionlive.co.uk

AND THE WINNERS ARE…

ANTALIS 2018 REVIEW AWARDS WINNERS Now in its 27th year, The Review is designed to celebrate those who have created exceptional print work using Antalis media, with the awards attracting some of the most talented designers and printers in the industry each year.

[A]

record-breaking 492 entries were received this year, with a panel of four industry experts going on to choose the crowning champions of 12 specialist categories in the design and print fields. The absolute Best in Design was awarded to ‘Begg & Co Lookbooks’ by Studio Small, a catalogue printed by PUSH London on Olin Rough High White for both the cover and text stock. For Best in Print, ‘Carpathia’ by Opal Print (Bath) Ltd was crowned the standout entry. Designed by The English Group, the brochure used Conqueror Connoisseur Soft White for the cover stock and Edixion Offset for the text stock. Ian Webb, Marketing Director at Antalis, comments: “The Review awards aim to bring together key players in the design and print communities, in order to showcase innovative work and share best practise in a collaborative and celebratory environment. Underpinning the awards ceremony – which this year, I have to say, really was a showstopper – is the central ethos that there is exceptional work being done in design at print, by some remarkably talented people. We hope that by recognising some of these stand-out projects and sharing this work with the wider industry it will serve as inspiration for the current and upcoming generations of designers and printers alike. “We were thrilled to have yet another recordbreaking year of entries and entrants who were inspired to ‘Step Right Up’ (our theme this year); many of whom truly demonstrated the payback of raising the bar in their creative concepts and creating something of a breath-taking quality. We would like to thank all of the designers and print customers that entered this year and congratulate each of them on their achievement and contribution to the industry.” All entries received were judged by an independent panel of experts from the world of design and graphic arts. The judging panel this year included: Gary Bird, managing director of Gavin Martin Colournet; Michael Place, creative director of design studio Build; Alison Kaye, managing director of CPI UK; and Daniel Reed, owner of independent type platform DR-Foundry.

Woodland Trust Office Paper The strong environmental branding is backed up by environmental credentials that are second to none. Few, if any papers have such a strong and demonstrable environmental pedigree as Woodland Trust Office Paper. Not only is it produced to the highest environmental standards but also every sheet of Woodland Trust Office Paper sold contributes directly to the work of the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity the Woodland Trust — it really is ‘the paper that plants trees’.

Paper Production

The majority of the raw material used to make Woodland Trust Office Paper comes from wood cut down as part of thinning work in forests in southern Sweden and wood chips sourced from local saw mills within a 100km radius of the mill, minimising the environmental impact of transportation. The species of tree used are pine, spruce, beech and

aspen. The forest industry has to ensure that it can meet future demand for timber and therefore plants three or four trees for every one that is harvested. The vigorous growth of young trees absorbs CO2 at a fast rate. The operations of the forest industry result in a net uptake of CO2 as the forests absorb more CO2 than the industry emits from its operations. The CO2 is locked up in the wood fibres and remains in place and is only released when the wood fibre is burned or biodegrades. The production of Woodland Trust Office Paper emits zero (0) CO2 from fossil fuels during the manufacturing process. It is true that carbon dioxide is formed in the pulp mill during production, but this is filtered out and utilised to make precipitated calcium carbonate, a key element in paper production. The CO2 emissions from fossil fuels are therefore 0 kg per tonne of Woodland Trust Office Paper.

Carbon Capture Carbon

Capture is included in the price of Woodland Trust Office Paper. CO2 is generated by the distribution and storage of Woodland Trust Office Paper and this is compensated for through Premier’s Carbon Capture programme which plants trees with the Woodland Trust’s Woodland Carbon Scheme. It is calculated that 25m2 of native British woodland will capture and store 1 tonne of CO2 and creating large areas of new native woodland, will, over time, remove hundreds of thousands of tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. http://www.paper.co.uk/ environment/carbon-capture/ Everyone who purchases Woodland Trust Office Paper will receive a quarterly statement and certificate detailing the amount of CO2 that they Carbon Capture through their purchases.

Now available in 80gsm

Traditionally, in the United Kingdom, 80gsm paper is the standard for photocopiers. In this country, lower weights have been thought of — and marketed as — inferior products. But, in fact, tradition is the main reason that we use 80gsm. In the country that uses the most paper per head of population, the United States of America, copier paper is normally 20lb (75gsm). In Japan, where many photocopiers originate, the standard paper for photocopiers is lighter still (between 64gsm and 70gsm). What is more important than weight in a copier paper is bulk and rigidity. Woodland Trust Office Paper has exceptional bulk, with the 75gsm giving a greater bulk factor than many 80gsm copier papers. Woodland Trust Office Paper is also available in 80gsm and again the bulk of the sheet far exceeds that of other 80gsm papers giving excellent on machine performance. So why is the emphasis on Woodland Trust Office Paper 75gsm when the traditional preferred weight in the UK is 80gsm? The answer is that the 75gsm Woodland Trust Office Paper performs as well as all 80gsm papers in its class yet you get 7% more sheets of paper per tonne. That is 14,000 more sheets per tonne of paper (for every 569kg of CO2 emissions) of A4 75gsm compared to A4 80gsm. Or, to look at it another way, by using 75gsm rather than 80gsm, the yield is an additional 24,000 sheets per tonne of CO2 generated. This represents a significant saving of energy and CO2 emissions www.paper.co.uk

From its launch to the beginning of 2017 the Carbon Capture programme has donated over £500,000 to the Woodland Trust. Premier is a major supporter and corporate partner of the Woodland Trust, the UK's leading conservation charity the Woodland Trust in its work to plant and conserve native woodland in numerous locations across the UK. Premier offers customers the opportunity to buy Carbon Captured products, where the CO2 emissions from the manufacture and distribution of the product has been calculated and an equivalent amount of CO2 has been captured by planting native British woodland.

Brenva HD Production Press With the demand for colour inkjet pages expected to grow more than five-fold through 2021, print providers need more productivity and flexibility from their inkjet devices to capture that growth. To respond to the

demand, Xerox has increased output capacity for the Xerox Brenva® HD Production Press by 40 percent, expanded stock choices and added a roll feed capability for continuous operation. Productivity Boost — With the new duplex speed kit, Brenva HD’s output speed increases from 197 to 275 A4 pages per minute, allowing print providers to take advantage of the inkjet value proposition, high quality and high output for key application areas. “Print speed, workflow efficiency and production costs are among the top decision drivers for print providers considering inkjet,” said Marco Boer, vice president, IT Strategies. “The Brenva HD speed upgrade means print providers can get more valuable jobs out the door faster, especially in key application growth areas such as transactional and direct mail.” Brenva HD’s increased output also creates new ways to print more jobs faster. The new kit increases productivity by speeding up duplex printing, which is essential for books and manuals, as well as many transactional jobs. Depending on the sheet size used, print providers can now achieve up to 300 A4 size

impressions per minute with the Brenva HD Press. Production Flexibility — Working with technology partner, Tecnau, Xerox now offers the Tecnau SheetFeeder™ BV roll feed system for up to nine hours of non-stop cut sheet paper feeding. Brenva HD is the first sheet-fed inkjet press to offer a roll feed option, enabling print shops to produce longer run jobs without frequent paper tray restocking. The book, transactional and direct mail segments are all expected to have double digit compound annual growth rates in production inkjet pages by 2021. With Brenva HD’s increased output and new roll feed capabilities, print providers can grow profitability by reducing run costs and increasing capacity. More Applications, More Profit — To give print providers even more opportunities to produce new applications, Brenva HD can now print on heavier weight stocks up to 270 gsm. A wider range of applications such as postcards, ID cards, and other jobs that utilise thicker, heavier media can now be produced quickly and efficiently on the Brenva HD. “We’re continually looking for ways to drive new business efficiencies and opportunities for our customers, and our upgrades for Brenva HD were designed with those key elements in mind,” said Ragni Mehta, vice president and general manager, Cut Sheet Business, Xerox. “Our customers can now focus on maximising their business potential and growing revenue by taking on more print jobs, regardless of run length.” The Brenva HD speed kit is available to order now. The kit will be available for both new equipment and as an upgrade to existing machines. Discover more at www.xerox.com

using colour changes, this approach could be used to develop materials for energy storage and electronics.” The research is supported by the Leverhulme Trust, the German Academic Exchange service (DAAD) and the University of Nottingham More information is available from Dr Victor Sans Sangorrin, Victor.SansSangorrin@ nottingham.ac.uk or Emma Lowry, Media Relations Manager (Faculty of Engineering), University of Nottingham emma.lowry@ nottingham.ac.uk

The next revolution in Textile Printing

New University of Nottingham research proves that advanced materials containing molecules that switch states in response to environmental stimuli such as light can be fabricated using 3D printing. The study findings have the potential to vastly increase the functional capabilities of 3D-printed devices for industries such as electronics, healthcare and quantum computing. The research, led by Dr Victor Sans Sangorrin from the Faculty of Engineering and Dr Graham Newton from the School of Chemistry, is published in the academic journal, Advanced Materials. “This bottom-up approach to device fabrication will push the boundaries of additive manufacturing like never before. Using a unique integrated design approach, we have demonstrated functional synergy between photochromic molecules and polymers in a fully 3D-printed device. Our approach expands the toolbox of advanced materials available to engineers developing devices for real-world problems,” explains Dr Sans. To demonstrate their concept, the team developed a photoactive molecule that changes from colourless to blue when irradiated with light. The colour change can then be reversed by exposure to oxygen from the air. The researchers then 3D-printed composite materials by combining the photoactive molecules with a tailor-made polymer, yielding a new material that can store information reversibly. Dr Newton, said: “We can now take any molecules that change properties upon exposure to light and print them into composites with almost any shape or size. In theory, it would be possible to reversibly encode something quite complex like a QR code or a barcode, and then wipe the material clean, almost like cleaning a whiteboard with an eraser. Hybrid Services has announced the launch of the Mimaki TS55-1800; a revolutionary new digital heat transfer sublimation printer that brings high-end features to entry and mid-level markets. The TS551800 achieves all this with low running costs and the high productivity and reliability that Mimaki products are known for. “The TS55-1800 is a breakthrough digital textile printer, that will surely cause a stir in the market,” says Bert Benckhuysen, senior

33

product manager at Mimaki Europe. Furthermore, Mini Jumbo Rolls of Mimaki Vision Jet-X transfer paper, supplied by Neenah Coldenhove, will be offered as a package deal with the TS55-1800. The 2,500 m1 Mini Jumbo Rolls are the ideal way to upgrade to high volume unattended textile printing. This is truly revolutionary, and we believe it will make a huge contribution to the on going analogue to digital transformation underway in the industry.” More details about Mimaki products, including its full line of printers, inks and cutting machines, can be found at www.hybridservices.co.uk

Knowledge is power Whether you’ve just started out in print or you’ve had years of experience, there comes a point where you’ve read all the manuals and seen all the YouTube tutorials, but you still want to know more. Investing in the best technology is only half the battle. A good machine helps, but at the heart of every successful print business is a person — someone with knowledge, expertise and true passion for their job. If you want to go further, you need to invest in the technology that’s really driving it — the grey matter between your ears. Efficiency and Economy — Big mistakes can cost a lot of money, but at least you won’t have trouble noticing them. It’s the smaller mistakes that you need to worry about. A little wastage here and there can be seen as part of the job, but over time it could cost your business a fortune — money that could be better spent on new equipment or another pair of hands. Some costs, like the time wasted on inadequate workflows, are hard to quantify, but they add up. These bad habits that slip under the radar are easily remedied, but you can’t fix them if you don’t know about them. A digital print course from Roland Academy can help address the unknowns, letting you nip these habits in the bud and set better ones in their place to help build a healthier business. Keeping a competitive edge — You don’t need to be told that it’s a tough world out there for a small or medium-sized business. Consumers are better informed than they used to be, and they have more options available to them. The sad fact is that they’ll always be able to find your services cheaper online with one of the bigger companies. You can’t compete on price, so you have to compete on quality and service. That personal touch is something that those online giants

can’t come close to, and face-to-face interaction lets you educate your customers on what’s possible. Impeccable quality isn’t something that happens by accident and even if you buy the most advanced printer in the industry, you’ll need the knowhow to get the best possible results for every application. Branching out — Think about the opportunities that you’re missing because certain jobs are outside your comfort zone. A lot of print professionals are reluctant to invest in new equipment, but it’s not always because they can’t afford it. For example, someone who has only done signage might not want to step into the unfamiliar territory of product personalisation, no matter how lucrative it is. In a way, this is understandable. You wouldn’t feel comfortable buying an expensive new machine if you’ve never used it before — especially if the seller doesn’t offer training support. The good news is that print technology has come a long way and with manufacturers focusing more on usability, the learning curves aren’t as steep as they once were. A day’s course in UV printing with Roland Academy might be all you need to get your new venture off to a flying start. Training for your employees — As your business grows, you’ll need more staff to help

with the workload. You’ll need to invest in their training early because the time and money spent correcting the mistakes of inexperienced trainees can slowly make a big dent in your profits. Even with the best intentions, you’ll struggle to train your new employees by yourself whilst dealing with a higher volume of work. The great news is, you don’t need to. Sacrifice a day or two of your employees’ time and invest in the Introduction to Digital Print course, or the Intermediate Digital Print course with Roland Academy. They’ll come back with new found knowledge but that’s not all — once they’ve seen that you’re willing to invest in their development, they’ll return the favour by working even harder. At Roland DG, training is a big part of their commitment to service. It doesn’t just help their customers take care of their machines, it gives them time to innovate and investigate new profitmaking opportunities. Ultimately, it helps them become successful business owners and lets them invest in more Roland equipment further down the line. For Roland, training is a win-win. If you want to expand your digital print knowledge, you can find all the courses on their website, along with regular free webinars. Just visit www.rolanddg.co.uk/academy or talk to them on 01275 335540.

Profit that sticks Label printing specialist, Vale Labels, has become the first company in the UK to offer HP’s powerful HP Indigo 6900. The new HP digital press will speed up the company’s digital portfolio and attract new business with even faster deadlines. This installation of the HP Indigo 6900 takes the company into its next period of growth; allowing it to drive unmatched quality, productivity and versatility. The move is designed to speed up production time and maintain excellent relationships with customers. A family-managed independent business, Vale Labels specialises in digital printing and the production of self-adhesive labels for companies of all kinds, in a range of sectors. Having purchased their first HP Indigo press over a decade ago, Vale Labels is now one of HP’s longest standing customers in the UK. After a period of rapid growth, the company stepped into digital printing with HP, installing its first HP press, an HP WS2000, in the early 2000s. A bold move for the business, it proved to be a profitable one. It allowed Vale Labels to satisfy growing customer demand for smaller orders with shorter lead times, as well as meet the needs of new customers wanting to create high quality labels in flexible batches — reducing the need for placing large, less economical orders. By offering smaller orders, Vale’s digital

portfolio enabled customers to take less risk during tough financial times. This meant that despite market contraction Vale Labels continued to grow. Demand grew and Vale Labels’ CEO, John Riches, took the decision to upgrade to a HP Indigo 4500 to increase volume production and vary the service array. An HP Indigo 6800 later replaced the HP Indigo 4500, further increasing capacity. Riches said: “The new HP Indigo 6900, with its expanded capabilities, has allowed us to offer even more choice to our ever-increasing customer base. The increased machine speed creates us spare capacity coupled with colour

consistency and automated quality controls has allowed us the confidence, and opportunity, to take on a greater variety of projects whilst maintaining our incredibly high standards.” The HP Indigo 6900 Digital Press, announced earlier this year, enables printing of any label, at any run-length, in a simpler, more productive and profitable way. Its unmatched versatility offers unique solutions allowing converters to produce any narrow format label, flexible packaging, sleeve, IML, wrap-around labels or folding cartons job, with easy and quick changeovers. www.valelabels.co.uk

New Soyang textile and flooring collections Digitally printable media specialist, Soyang Europe has announced stock availability of several new products, as the company grows its comprehensive collections of printable materials for the wide and super-wide format sectors. “We continuously consult with our customers to find out what we can both manufacture and distribute in order to meet their ever-changing needs,” explains Soyang Europe’s Managing Director, Mark Mashiter. “The textile market continues to grow and we have new backlit, black back and display polyester materials manufactured at our new factory in Haining, China, and also from our long-standing European partners.” Soyang Europe is now stocking its new ST608 Athena Backlit material, which is produced using the latest coating line technology, giving a smooth textile finish. Available up to 3.2m wide and suitable for both UV and latex inks, Athena is ideal for the burgeoning retail and exhibition graphics markets. Also complementing its broad range of printable textiles are two new products from Endutex; Terra 260 BW FR Black Back and Sirius Backlit. Terra 260 is a black back textile

ideal for retail and exhibition graphics where there’s a requirement to have no light from the reverse, such as when disguising a supporting framework or concealing existing graphics. Available in widths up to 5m, Terra 260 can be printed with both UV and latex inks. Sirius is a high-quality backlit fabric that, importantly, is available in widths up to 5m which is uncommon for a backlit textile. Compatible with both UV and latex printers, Sirius is ideal for larger, more extensive graphics. Both new fabrics satisfy the stringent EN13501-1 fire classification procedure.

“In addition to textiles, we’re also seeing continued growth and interest in the flooring market,” continues Mashiter. “Across all sectors, we’re seeing that printed flooring is playing an increasingly important role in commercial, industrial and even domestic environments and our flooring collection is expanding in response to this demand.” New to the UK flooring market are Universal Floor and Grip Floor, both featuring FR certification and available from stock from Soyang Europe’s Lancashire Distribution Centre. Universal Floor is a short-term solution, perfect for exhibition stands where a comfortable cushioned surface can be combined with printed graphics or designs. It’s available in widths up to 4m and can be printed on larger UV and latex machines. Grip Floor is a long lasting, printable flooring with a rough surface giving it satisfactory anti-slip performance, fulfilling health and safety requirements. Available in a 1.05m width and compatible with UV, latex and solvent ink types, this selfadhesive backed PVC flooring with anti-slip certification is also ideal for the exhibition and retail sectors. CreaseStream Card Creaser Case Study

The QPP beta test studio has been left wondering why it has taken so long for this to come to market. It is so much quicker to use than the manual creasing machines that are regularly used in our finishing room and you aren’t limited to one crease at a time. It is easy to set the creasing devices – there are four channel widths — just simply choose the one most suited to the weight of paper/card you are working with. The double crease for trifolded leaflets is so much better than the manual way of producing one crease then turning for the second crease.

There was also a need for a third crease on one occasion so having produced the usual two creases the machine was re-set and the card put through again. Probably the highlight was the speed in which 500 sheets of 250gsm, each with eight A6s which had to be creased to ultimately produce 4pp A7 cards went through the CreaseStream. These sheets were then guillotined and boxed up all within half an hour. I don’t think the CreaseStream will be leaving after the test period as with the Christmas card season approaching the Colourfast bureau team are already looking at where it will fit in the finishing room. SOMETHING TO SHARE…? Am I A Bad Father?

Jonathan asked his young son, “Greg, do you think I’m a bad father?”

The Barber Wins

And the unexpected winner of the race was... The Barber... however he did do a short cut.

A butcher is leaning on the counter

A butcher is leaning on the counter toward the close of day when a dog with a basket in its jaws comes pushing through the door. “An’ what’s this then?” he asked. The dog knocks the basket sharply into the butcher’s shins.” You dumb dog.” As he reaches down to smack the dog, he notices a note and a ten pound note in the basket. The scribble on the note asks for three pounds of his best mince. The butcher figures this is too easy. He goes to the window and reaches for the dried up stuff that’s been sitting out all day. The dog growls at him. The butcher turns around and, glaring at the pup, gets the best mince from the fridge. Weighing out about 2 1/2 pounds, he drops in on the scale with his thumb. “Hmm, a bit shy. Who’ll know?” Again, the dog growls menacingly. “Alright, alright,” as he throws on a generous half pound. He wraps it up, drops it in the basket, and drops in change from a fiver. The dog threatens to chew him off at the ankles. Another fiver goes in the basket. The butcher is quite impressed and decides to follow the clever pup home. The dog quickly enters a highrise building, pushes the lift button, enters the lift, and then pushes the button for the 12th floor. The dog walks down the corridor and smartly bangs the basket on the door. The door opens, and the dog’s owner screams at the dog. “Hey, what are you doing? “That’s a really smart dog you’ve got there” comments the butcher. “He’s a stupid dog, that’s the third time this week he’s forgotten his key.”

It Was Mum

A mother and son were washing dishes while the father and daughter were watching TV in the lounge. Suddenly, there was a crash of breaking crockery, then complete silence. The girl looked at her dad and said, “It was Mum.” “How do you know?” “She didn’t say anything.”

Circus Act

A man decides to join the circus. He shows up to demonstrate his skills to the impresario. “I have the most unusual act,” he announces. “I’m sure it will amaze you.” He climbs up to the high wire and jumps off! He flaps his arms wildly, and finally his fall slows and the man begins to fly. He soars upward, turns, and swoops back again. Finally, he stops in mid air and gently lowers himself to the ground. The impresario says, “Is that all you’ve got? Bird impressions?”

Little Messages

Once my dog ate all the Scrabble tiles... He kept leaving little messages around the house.

Pizza for Dinner

Someone knocked at my door last evening. When I opened it, I saw a guy from Domino’s holding a chicken pepperoni pizza with extra cheese and onion rings. “I haven’t ordered any pizza,” I said. “This must be a mistake.” “No, it’s not,” he replied. “Your neighbour forgot his Facebook password and wanted to show you what he was eating for dinner.”

You Have Two More Wishes A man finds a lamp. He rubs it and a Genie emerges. The Genie tells him he will be granted three wishes. The man thinks for a moment and says, “First, give me a bottomless mug of beer.” A mug of beer appears in his hand. He sips it once, then again and the mug is magically refilled. The man is thrilled and continues to drink. The mug never empties. Then the Genie says, “And what about your other two wishes?”

The guy thinks for a moment and says, “Give me two more just like this one!”

Halloween Jokes

Where do ghosts buy their food? At the ghost-ery store!

More ghoulish puns

I threw a boomerang at a ghost the other day. I knew it would come back to haunt me. I got so fed up with trick or treaters at Halloween that in the end I turned the lights out and pretended I wasn’t in. Forget the ships. My lighthouse, my rules! I’m not saying my wife is ugly... but on Halloween she went to tell the neighbours to turn their TV down and they gave her some candy. A young boy knocked on my door on Halloween night and said, “Trick or treat?” I looked at him and asked, “What have you come as?” He said, “A werewolf.” I said, “But you’re not wearing a costume. You’ve just got your normal clothes on.” He said, “Yeah well, it’s not a full moon yet, is it?”

Doh

Sworn to Tell the Truth

I just popped over to my Grandma’s, and you’ve got to hand it to her. At 96, she had all the Halloween decorations up, cobwebs and insects in the windows and a skeleton on the couch. She always makes a big effort, but there was no answer... I’ll pop back next year.

Do this one... Last Halloween there was a knock on the door. I looked out of the window and then shouted upstairs to my wife, “Honey there’s a witch at the door. What shall I do?” She shouted back, “Just give her some candy and tell her to get lost.” My mother-in-law hasn’t spoken to me since. The best part about Halloween is that the cobwebs in my house look like decorations. I had a big row with my wife last Halloween. I yelled at her, “When you finally die, I’m getting you a headstone that says, ‘Here Lies My Wife — Cold As Ever’.” “Yeah well,” she shouted back, “When you die, I’m getting you a headstone that says, ‘Here Lies My Husband — Stiff At Last.’”

Learning with Tequila Tequila is an excellent teacher... Just last night it taught me to count... One Tequila, Two Tequila, Three Tequila, Floor!

Standing at the Hole in the Wall…

The judge warned the witness, “Do you understand that you have sworn to tell the truth?” “I do.” “Do you understand what will happen if you are not truthful?” “Sure,” said the witness. “My side will win.”

Repetitive Training

So there was this man in Bulgaria who drove trains for a living. He loved his job. Driving a train had been his dream ever since he was a child. He loved to make the train go as fast as possible. Unfortunately, one day he was a little too reckless and caused a crash. He made it out, but a single person died. Well, needless to say, he went to court over this incident. He was found guilty, and was sentenced to death by electrocution. When the day of the execution came, he requested a single banana as his last meal. After eating the banana, he was strapped into the electric chair. The switch was flown, sparks flew, and smoke filled the air — but nothing happened. The man was perfectly fine. Well, at the time, there was an old Bulgarian law that said a failed execution was a sign of divine intervention, so the man was allowed to go free. Somehow, he managed to get his old job back driving the train. Having not learned his lesson at all, he went right back to driving the train with reckless abandon. Once again, he caused a train to crash, this time killing two people. The trial went much the same as

…I saw a lad standing on one leg.

39

the first, resulting in a sentence of execution. For his final meal, the man requested two bananas. After eating the bananas, he was strapped into the electric chair. The switch was thrown, sparks flew, smoke filled the room — and the man was once again unharmed. Well, this of course meant that he was free to go. And once again, he somehow managed to get his old job back. To what should have been the surprise of no one, he crashed yet another train and killed three people. And so he once again found himself being sentenced to death. On the day of his execution, he requested his final meal: three bananas. “You know what? No,” said the executioner. “I’ve had it with you and your stupid bananas and walking out of here unharmed. I’m not giving you a thing to eat; we’re strapping you in and doing this now.” Well, it was against protocol, but the man was strapped in to the electric chair without a last meal. The switch was pulled, sparks flew, smoke filled the room — and the man was still unharmed. The executioner was speechless. The man looked at the executioner and said, “Oh, the bananas had nothing to do with it. I’m just a bad conductor.”

About turn

Wake Up

Marriage is like a deck of cards. In the beginning, all you need is two hearts and a diamond. By the end, you wish you had a club and a spade!

You know you’re having a bad day when your wife says, “Good morning, Bill” and your name is George.

Confused, I asked him what he was doing?

Nurse: “Doctor, doctor! The man you’ve just treated collapsed on the front step! What should I do?” Doctor: “Turn him around, so it looks like he was just arriving!”

The Right One Sitting in the bar George asks his 40-year-old friend John, “How come you aren’t married?” John replies, “I haven’t found the right woman yet.” “So what are you looking for?” “Oh, she’s got to be real pretty, a good cook, and house keeper. She’s got to know how to handle money, have a nice and pleasant personality, and money. She’s got to have money. And a nice big house wouldn’t hurt either.” “A woman like that would be crazy to marry YOU!” says George. “Oh, it’s okay, if she is crazy.”

A New Make of Car At the bar, Tom and Bill were talking. “My uncle tried to make a new kind of car. He took the wheels from a Fiat, the radiator from a Vauxhall, and bumper from a Ford,” said Tom. “What did he get?” asked Bill. “Two years,” said Tom.

Big deal

He was just checking his balance.
