Fuller Davies prepares for business growth Suffolk general commercial printer Fuller Davies Printing & Mailing Ltd has invested in a Horizon BQ270V single clamp perfect binder to support new and existing business. The commercial printing and mailing company produces high end catalogues and brochures. It runs a B1 Heidelberg litho press with InPress Control and a Kodak NexPress digital press with long sheet and special finishes capability. Managing Director Neil Stones explains the investment: “We have been considering bringing perfect binding in-house for a while. After analysing our run lengths, we found our average binding run was 2,000 or below so the timing felt right. We wanted an easy to use, quality binder that would give us the ability to turn perfect binding jobs around quickly. The BQ270V helps us to do just that.” He continues: “After attending various demonstrations and comparing what was on the market we settled on Horizon, through IFS. Horizon is a highly respected manufacturer of quality equipment and talking to other users confirmed our feelings that this was the best option. We liked its simplicity and user friendly operation. The cover feeder and scorer were a must too. It has cutting edge glue technology and is also quick to start up and shut down which saves a lot of time.” As for the impact the system is making Stones says: “Being able to produce perfect binding in-house easily has made our production more efficient and meant we can be more responsive. We have a couple of team members who are familiar with Horizon binders already and others are already very confident and really pleased with how well it runs.” Fuller Davies Printing & Mailing Ltd has also reported increased sales and now has greater confidence to invest in its future.

Its 500cph Horizon BQ-270V single-clamp perfect binder offers high quality perfect binding and on-demand production of variable thickness books. It includes an automated, sensor activated digital caliper system which consistently measures book block thickness and automatically transfers this data to the binder for quick, automated set-up for books of different thicknesses. It features a large 10.4” intelligent colour touch screen, job programming, and a compact configuration. www.ifsl.uk.com

Customark updates Bindery with CCM Premier 78 When Customark needed to quickly replace an aging guillotine it turned to long-term supplier TCS and chose a CCM Premier 78. The West Midlands market leader in selfadhesive labels was established in 1970 and is today owned by Greg Lerigo. It produces a wide variety of industrial labels and graphics for leading electronics manufacturers including Sharp, Honeywell, Makita and Schneider Electric. There are now 90 employees across four sites of the £4.7m turnover operation. The new guillotine has been installed at its Calne facility. “We had an older guillotine and it was time to replace it,” says Lerigo. “We have worked with TCS in the past so I called them up to talk about a quick second hand replacement. “But it soon became clear the new Premier 78 did everything we were looking for and it was a great price. It made sense to go for the new system. “We have worked with Terry Cooper Services in the past and know and trust its service and support.” As for the guillotine itself he says: “We know the Premier range well and were confident that it would do a good job. It has been perfect from

day one. We are very pleased.” With a 78cm cutting width the CCM Premier 78 has a heavy build that reduces vibration, improves machine life and cutting accuracy. It also offers deep clamp opening to accept more paper to reduce overall cutting time, optical shaft encoder on high speed backgauge for faster operation and accurate cutting, large

side tables for easier paper handling, infra-red slimline light barriers, improved centralised oiling wear free bearings and totally enclosed knife change with monitored single shear bolt protection, turnbuckle adjustment, for a fast, safe, easy knife change. Enhanced features include programmability and memory storage. www.terrycooperservices.co.uk

Office transformation for deaf children’s charity In line with a national rebrand, the National Deaf Children’s Society has revamped its offices across the UK with a little help from Signs Express. With a combination of exterior signage, wayfinding displays, reception signs and wallpaper graphics, the charity’s offices have been transformed into an energetic, creative space that reflects the passion and devotion of the teams. The National Deaf Children’s Society’s main site in London saw the majority of the work, which was completed by Signs Express (Harlow), experts in rebrands, having carried out numerous projects since their establishment in 1995. Paul Heywood, co-owner of Signs Express (Harlow), stated “It is always an honour to work with charities, but when we saw the designs for the office, we knew this was something a little bit different. With the combination of colours, materials and types of signage, even the change in the charity’s logo has had a massively positive effect everywhere in the building.” In addition to London, the National Deaf Children’s Society’s offices in Birmingham, Glasgow and Cardiff have also been updated by each of the Signs Express branches in these areas. As a national sign company with 65 centres up and down the UK, the company was able to deliver consistency and excellent service to every project location. Phil Barros, Head of Brand Marketing for the National Deaf Children’s Society, said: “The difference to our office environment has been incredible to see. The fantastic new office environment really showcases our values and will remind staff and visitors of the inspirational deaf children we support every day. The professionalism Signs Express has shown has been faultless and

the response of staff across the organisation has been overwhelmingly positive.” Signs Express are experts in all manner of signage, with rebrands and office fit outs a specialism, having conducted them for companies, such as Leaders, Lichfields and Sure Maintenance Group. With branches all over the UK and Ireland, there is always someone there to help you. www.signsexpress.co.uk/Harlow

Aztec Label celebrate 25 years Aztec Label has marked a quarter-century of producing high quality self-adhesive labels by completing a £250,000 refurbishment of its Kidderminster premises. Established in 1993, the company has grown steadily throughout the last three decades and recently refurbished its expansive 14,500 sq ft premises to ensure it remains at the forefront of delivering superior labels and tag products. “Our commitment to using top of the range modern machinery and highly qualified staff in all aspects of the business helps us ensure that we always deliver quality products and services on time to customers throughout the UK and further afield,” said Managing Director Colin Le Gresley. “I started the company in my home garage, but over the last 25 years we have enjoyed continuous growth to reach our current size, moving within Kidderminster six times until settling in our current location. Our newly refurbished premises now operate with innovative, modern presses and equipment and we use cutting edge management information systems to keep track of production processes.” Colin explained that Aztec Label, which manufactures a wide range of self-adhesive label and tag products, from plain to 10 colours, built its success on forging strong relationships with customers the length and breadth of the country. “The knowledge levels of our staff stretch far beyond those of many other companies, with nearly 250 years of collective production and management experience,” he said. “No matter how large an order is, we have the skills, production capacity and resources to fulfil it. “Our base in the West Midlands means that we are also ideally located to serve the whole of the UK and beyond,” he said. “Our attention to detail and experience has allowed us to form

solid, longstanding relationships with external suppliers, bonds which allow us to ensure that we offer a quality product and service every single time.” With sustainability a hot-button topic for many, Colin said Aztec Label has successfully implemented a full quality control system at every stage of its operation, with rigorous testing and cross checks to eliminate errors and reduce wastage. “We also have full traceability on the key materials used, which is pivotal for many customers whose CSR agenda is, rightly, of vital importance to them,” he said. To celebrate the milestone of 25 years in business, every one of the colleagues at the company recently enjoyed a long weekend in Barcelona. “This is a family operated business, and we pride ourselves on treating all of our staff like family members,” said Colin. “Our experienced, dedicated and professional staff – some of whom have been with Aztec Label for more than 20 years — are a key component in the success of what we do. We wanted to do something as a team to mark this exciting and

momentous occasion,” said Colin. During the trip, the colleagues soaked up the sights of the historic city with visits to Gaudi’s famously unfinished Basilica de la Sagrada Familia and the beautifully bizarre Park Güell, while enjoying the finest meals available on Las Ramblas. Looking ahead to the next quarter of a century, Colin said Aztec Label would continue striving to remain at the pinnacle of labels success. “Our mission statement has remained consistent across more than 25 years of operation; to offer all of our customers the best possible quality, pricing structure and service,” he said. “Our commitment to using the best equipment, materials and staff has given us an edge that is respected both by our customers and within our industry. “As we move into the next exciting chapter of our history, our goal is to not just maintain these incredibly high standards we have set ourselves, but indeed to raise the bar further still. That’s just our way.” www.azteclabel.co.uk

Performance, strength and durability Ladies and gentlemen welcome to the main event, the perfect match for all your durable applications. To my left in the red corner, wearing the bright white polyester shorts and weighing from 95 up to 350gsm, across a choice of three sizes; hailing from the UK and undefeated by water, grease, weather and bleach, put your hands together for DigiTuff! The Top Performing — DigiTuff is the latest addition to Premier Paper’s arsenal of digital print media. Available exclusively in the UK from Premier Paper, DigiTuff is the incredibly strong, highly durable bright white polyester sheet media that will never tear. Like some of the world’s greatest athletes, DigiTuff has been engineered for performance. It is perfectly optimised for use on both colour and mono digital print processes; the smooth matt surface enables the production of vibrant images and excellent toner bonding for outstanding end results; the ideal candidate for those applications that require the combination of durability and high print quality such as menus and point of sale displays. World’s Strongest — Whilst it may not be built on a diet of protein or forged by hours relentless work in the gym, DigiTuff is incredibly strong. It is a polyethylene terephthalate (PET), commonly referred to as Polyester and PET films have good stiffness with high dimensional and temperature stability. They are bi-axially oriented during the manufacturing process which develops a very high tensile strength. This trait makes DigiTuff the perfect wingman for outdoor applications such as signage, running bibs, military maps/manuals and industrial tags. ‘Tuff’ Guy — As well as being resistant to tearing, DigiTuff is relentlessly durable. This incredible synthetic sheet is waterproof, greaseproof, petrol-proof, oil-proof and can be cleaned with bleach; ideal for applications in the medical and catering industries. Better yet, DigiTuff loves being outside and can handle all weather conditions and withstand

temperatures from -40°C up to 250°C. With a Heart of Green — The misuse of plastics is of course an on-going blight on the planet and all of its inhabitants. Despite misconceptions about synthetic media, DigiTuff is PVC-free and can be recycled as category 7 plastics for disposal. The aqueous coatings mean that no solvent waste or VOC emission can be found during the production or recycling process and because DigiTuff is inert it can safely be used for landfill. DigiTuff can also be incinerated by licensed authorities, providing energy, without emitting toxic chemicals in the process. The CO2 emissions from the production and delivery of your DigiTuff order can be mitigated through Premier’s Carbon Capture programme with the Woodland Trust. So when you’re looking for a champion quality, durable print media choose DigiTuff to fight in your corner — it will be the perfect match. Contact your local Premier Paper branch or email digituff@paper.co.uk for more information, samples or swatches.

Nautilus Recycled from Antalis Antalis has introduced NAUTILUS® Uncoated to its portfolio of environmental papers. Manufactured by Mondi, the 100% recycled paper and board is in stock and ready for order now. Perfect for those customers wanting to make a clear environmental statement, NAUTILUS® is a paper with true recycled aesthetics — its look (flecks) and feel (roughness) clearly distinguish it from a virgin uncoated grade. NAUTILUS® is available in two grades — NAUTILUS® SuperWhite and NAUTILUS® Classic — in a wide range of paper and board weights, and cut and folio sheet sizes. NAUTILUS® SuperWhite is a premium ecological paper with excellent whiteness. Containing 100% post-consumer recycled paper, it has a high environmental profile with FSC® recycled, EU Ecolabel certification and a CO2 neutral option. NAUTILUS® Classic combines the authentic recycled paper shade with the stringent Blue Angel environmental profile. This 100% recycled paper is optimised for trouble free printing and copying. Antalis is committed to helping customers reduce their environmental

impact. They can help and advise on how to achieve carbon balancing, and how to obtain logos and certificates for use on printed material so users can demonstrate and communicate their commitment to reducing their carbon impact. NAUTILUS® Uncoated is part of Antalis’ carbon programme with a carbon balanced option available for a small, additional cost, enabling users to offset the unavoidable carbon emission of their paper use. Carbon balance is achieved through the preservation of ecologically important standing forests under threat of clearance, locking in carbon that would otherwise be released. By purchasing carbon balanced papers customers are helping to support the work of the World Land Trust, an international conservation charity that protects the world’s most biologically significant habitats. www.antalis.co.uk

New Epson fluorescent ink dye-sub textile printing solution Epson has announced two 64 inch, dyesublimation printers, the SureColor SCF9400H and the SC-F9400. The printers have been developed primarily for fast, high volume printing, for clothing, textiles and soft signage, as well as other printed merchandise. The SC-F9400H also offers businesses the option of printing with two genuine florescent ink solutions (yellow and pink), which brings bright, vivid colours to the production of sportswear, workwear and fashion items. The SC-F9400 series is an evolution of trusted Epson print technology and provides enhanced quality with even greater productivity and reliability. Neil Greenlagh, product manager, Epson Europe, says: “Once again, our focus has been on the further development of the range, and the introduction of a genuine fluorescent solution that adds new value. This is a first for us and we believe that we’ve made fluorescent inks that are superior in terms of brightness and colour density. He added, “But it’s not all about the fluorescent ink options, we’ve also introduced a wider choice of EMX files, an instructional/ maintenance video (launched from a QR code), and a host of other features that make set-up, usage and maintenance as simple as possible. We’re sure that the SC-F9400 range will have a positive effect on the bottom line of many businesses.”

Introducing SUBSTR8 From Antalis Antalis has launched SUBSTR8, a new, interactive online product selector tool that makes choosing and selecting large format substrates for interior and exterior projects simple. SUBSTR8 was launched recently and originally previewed at Sign and Digital UK. SUBSTR8 allows customers, specifiers or end users to navigate Antalis’s vast range of roll and rigid media by ‘application’ across eight different creative sectors — using hotspots to guide them to discover more about which products are suitable for a particular application. Example sectors featured include retail instore/exteriors, office, automotive, exhibition and hospitality. This intuitive tool allows users to further filter and narrow results based on product ‘attributes’, such as self-adhesive type, environmental credentials, ink compatibility etc. Once users have found suitable substrates for their application they can add these to their ‘favourites’ list and also access full product range and technical information. If more in-depth information and advice about a particular job is required, or to request samples, users can click on the handy links. Chris Green, Head of Channel for Visual Communications at Antalis comments: “SUBSTR8 is a truly interactive product selector that allows you to find the right media solution for any large format requirement. It

is designed to facilitate easy navigation starting from application to the specific product attributes required. The tool has been fully tested with users and feedback has been extremely positive as users embrace the easy ‘step by step’ selection process. The introduction of SUBSTR8 is a great example of how Antalis is working with our customers and end users, helping to make choosing substrates for their own unique projects simple”. PIXEL PROPHET

THE ART OF THE POSSIBLE Sometimes it seems as if printing has been re-invented, at least in some fantasy world in which certain customers apparently exist. The digital revolution has certainly turned how we go about printing on its head, but the basic issue of putting ink on paper is the same as it has been for generations in that it is all down to how quickly and how accurately you can lay an image down. This is a purely practical matter. Martin Christie scribes…

[R]

egardless of however fast you can transmit a file electronically today, turning it into hard copy still takes time, technology and talent. The problem is that too many people seem to rely on the technology alone without appreciating the need for either time or talent. Before digital, you had to consult with experts if you were going to commit pages to paper, and accept the limitations and timescales involved. The digital economy has made so many of those intermediaries redundant, and so not only their knowledge has been lost, but the very need for people who understand how to do things seems to have been forgotten. Why need knowledge when you can apparently source all the answers you need at the press of a search engine? The last assumption is fraught with so many falsehoods like whether you are searching the right questions, let alone getting the correct answers, but unless you have alternative, independent advice how would you know. This of course is true these days in so many aspects of public life, in the times of fake news and selective research. But I’m only going to look as far into this can of worms as it affects print on demand. To put the problem in context, previously you would have had to go to a printer or a designer with an idea, and maybe hard copy, for them to turn it into something real. Now customers can create something on their phone which appears to be real, without any understanding of any additional process that may be needed to put it into print, let alone to get it to print anything like it appears on their screen. Back in the days, when I wrote more frequently for publication, my words of wisdom were checked for spelling and sense by at least two people with knowledge and experience before they got anywhere near a public page. Fortunately, for QPP readers, that is still the case but for the majority of people now generating thousands of words and pictures across the globe there is no such scrutiny, or control of quality. When I submitted pictures, in the days of

film, I had specialist reproduction artists who sorted out colour separations and the problems getting them to plate. I didn’t need to give them a thought, just trust in their expertise, and their familiarity with the printing process they worked with on a daily basis. Now all those specialists are gone and have been replaced by intelligent machines designed to sort all those issues out. Unfortunately the technology tends to create as many problems as it solves. Having a device that thinks for you may work fine as a calculator, but has serious limitations as a creative mind. Even using addition if you don’t know instinctively that five sevens equals thirty five, but the screen tells you forty two, you have a problem. Part of the problem is that people, seduced by technology or clever marketing, are convinced that anything is possible. In a virtual world it may be able to create an illusion, but in the real world, which includes printing, it is not. That’s where the experts were able to step in and tell us what could be done, and we accepted it. Now it’s even harder to explain, and often less likely to be accepted. If you are starting to think this is just a rant against progress then you haven’t spent enough time at a printer shop counter listening to the daily menu of customers demands. It’s not the technology that’s at fault but the expectations it has created in its users who want to exploit its speed and convenience without understanding its limitations. As regular readers may know, I have progressed from film to digital photography and specialist printing over the last two decades, so am able to bring the experience of both to bear when issues arrive. But given that knowledge it’s frustrating when you have to go back to the very basics to educate a customer on what’s possible rather than what’s in their imagination. It’s the ‘I thought you could so something with it’ syndrome. Like the artist who came in with some images of her small canvases for reproduction but taken under bad lighting conditions on her phone. As a photographer, one of the first things I do is check

the camera details (available in Photoshop or Adobe Bridge) which tell me where and when as well as how the picture was taken. This is the smoking gun of digital imaging, the one thing a customer can’t argue with. I happened to notice on the same memory stick, some other, better images taken on a Panasonic Lumix — a very good quality little bridge camera with an excellent lens. So why hadn’t the artist used that to shoot the canvas? It was easier on the phone! Well, easier for the artist perhaps but not for a printer trying to reproduce anything anywhere near a work of art. A few pointers on lighting and one happy customer was able to come back a few days later with some new images we could work with rather than waste time and paper trying to turn a dog’s dinner into a decent meal. A similar but almost entirely opposite puzzle came a few days later. Again, another artist, but they don’t have exclusive rights to muddled thinking. This time the images looked substantial but the lighting was awful making the pictures so dense you could hardly distinguish the colours. The puzzle was that they appeared to have been taken with a Phase One large format digital camera, not with a phone as looked most likely at first glance. A Phase One is a serious piece of studio photography kit capable of shooting 100Mp images with some models boasting a £30,000 price tag. So how come the pictures taken with a professional camera were so bad? It seems the customer had access to the camera while at a studio so he took advantage of it. But because he thought he knew what he was doing he didn’t bother to ask the photographer about lighting settings, changing white balance, exposure compensation and a few minor things you need to be aware of. When I asked about the settings he just looked blank. He just pressed the button. He might just as well as used his phone after all! It’s not just the expectant amateurs who can cause issues. Professionals can be just as troublesome when so many of them are working with images predominantly used on line rather than in print. Both designers and photographers

will have developed used to a web-based world with no previous experience of print, and no understanding of how things will look when they are not brilliantly back lit. Once you consider that it’s a pretty important hurdle before you even talk about different types of printing and paper stock. So, we had an enquiry for a short-run A5 folded 24-page brochure to be turned out on our digital presses. Customer wanted to see a sample because they had had problems with colour printers in the past. Looking at the artwork provided as a PDF it was easy to see why. On a bright screen you can get away with lots of subtle colours and tones because there is light shining through that separates the different pixels. In print it is very much harder to make a clear division between one shade and another as the nature of the process tends to blend them together. Especially if you are using lots of different shades of grey, and other neutral colours which may be easy on the eye online but which are a nightmare to print. Grey is a challenge for a CMYK printer as the black can only be balanced by mixing the other three colours available, not by diluting the black as multi-colour inkjet printers can. In fact, any conversion for accurate four colour printing is not as simple as saving an RGB original as CMYK. All the colour channels really need to be balanced correctly by someone who knows the printer, and how it will interpret the digital codes sent to it. The brochure is for a range of electric scooters, many of which are black and grey. Even the coloured ones have lots of dark panels and accessories with important details that need to be seen clearly. Not only that, but they have been photographed, very professionally, but against lots of dark backgrounds. Again, not a problem on a bright projected screen, they look great. But in print it’s a different matter. As a photographer, I used to shoot quite a few motorbikes for magazines and brochures and in the old days of film you would try and chose bright backgrounds, or distance, to separate the model from what was behind it so it popped out of the printed page. Modern digital photographers have never had to think about that. Nor do they even seem to think about shooting portrait and landscape options to give the layout designer both possibilities. Another trick was to shoot a lot of sky or other clear space in the shot so that it could be used for captions or titles in a spread. The short hand of shooting in digital has made photographers quite lazy in

vivid-online.com

Before

this respect. A further consideration is that professional photographers will almost certainly be shooting in Raw format. This enables the images to be correctly processed on the computer afterwards. The original images out of the camera will be quite flat and it is a matter over how far the post production is pushed in terms of exposure, contrast and colour for example that determines the output. But of course this editing is being done to match a backlit screen, not a printed page. This mismatch is compounded when the

images are passed on to the designer and transformed along with other artwork and text and sent for output as a PDF. Once again, looks great as an on-screen presentation but… We’ve sent the customer a proof and also sent a sample of how the images should look if correctly adjusted for print. I’ve exaggerated the difference so you can clearly get the idea. Haven’t heard back yet but maybe we’ve caused offence by daring to offer some professional service and suggesting politely that maybe it wasn’t the printer they had a problem with before.

MANCHESTER PRINT SERVICES

MEETING DEMAND FOR FABRIC FINISHING A year following the installation of a wide-bed cutter/router from Blackman & White, Manchester Print Services is using its innovative laser technology to meet thriving market demand for textiles.

[B]

ased in Middleton, Manchester Print Services has grown over its eight year history to attract a range of customers in the retail POS and exhibitions markets. Recognising that these industries were moving away from typical board graphics and towards fabric materials, the business has invested in dyesublimation and direct to textile printing systems — and, in 2018, a new Blackman & White laser cutting and routing table. Lee Egan, Director of Manchester Print Services, explains: “Fabrics are definitely where the industry is going — they make it possible to produce seamless prints over much larger areas than boards, making them more easily transported for exhibitions and events. In retail environments, tension light boxes have all but replaced posters as POS displays. “In 2018 we installed a 3.2m-wide printer to meet this demand for textiles, but as our cutter at the time was only 1.6m wide we were having to complete the measuring and trimming stages by hand. By replacing the smaller cutter with a 3.2m Blackman & White wide-bed laser cutter/router we can now complete all the finishing automatically, even on rolls of fabric up to 3m x 10m long.” The cutter features a multitool head that enables a router, a blade cutter or a laser cutter to be fitted on one single machine for maximum efficiency and cost effectiveness. The 100W laser cuts or runs at speeds of up to 1,100mm per second with an accuracy of ±0.02mm — more accurate than

a knife as there is no contact with the material, and therefore no dragging. The contact free operation of the laser also results in a cleaner finished product — a benefit for Manchester Print Services, as Lee Egan explains. “We use the Blackman & White for almost everything, including vinyl and sign boards, which can leave debris on the cutting bed. When cutting blank white fabrics

for tension light boxes this isn’t ideal, but by using the contact free laser tool we can avoid this and achieve clean edges. Around 80 per cent of our work is now tension graphics so this is very important.” The laser cutting unit on the Blackman and White machine — the first flatbed cutter to feature a laser as well as a knife blade — is also ideal for large banners, which can be finished without

hemming or sewing. It also features a conveyorised cutting bed with a roller feed, allowing it to accommodate longer lengths of fabric materials, and a vacuum to secure the material during the cutting process. Alternatively, the laser unit can be switched for a 2.5kW water cooled router for sharp, clean cuts on acrylics, Foamex, aluminium composites such as Dibond, and many more signage and display substrates. Lee also praises Blackman and White for its service since the machine was installed a year ago. “As a smaller company we have to rely on one cutting machine to do all of our work, so it’s essential that we have a fast response if issues arise,” he says. “We can speak directly to Blackman and White, whose personal service solves any problems quickly.” For more information, please visit www.blackmanandwhite.com

Epson ‘Outstanding Use of Print’ Award Epson UK has announced that Birmingham City University (BCU)’s Facility of Arts, Design and Media student, Priti Patel, is this year’s recipient of its ‘Outstanding Use of Print’ Award. Miss Patel received the Award at the University’s annual Final Year Degree Show, a prize, which also includes an Epson EcoTank desktop inkjet printer. The annual award is part of a long-standing sponsorship Epson has with the University’s Arts, Design and Media department and aims to reward students who are pushing the boundaries of print and using this medium in exciting, creative and innovative ways. Heather Kendle, market development manager, Epson Europe says: “These awards are a great opportunity for Epson to work with students who we believe will become the creative leaders of tomorrow. We are always keen to understand how the next generation of upcoming artists and creatives are using our print technologies to deliver their creative vision and Priti’s dynamic work is a great example of how outstanding vibrancy and colour continues to be a critical factor in the creative process.” Miss Patel’s winning printed portfolio was inspired by the bold colours and distinctive tones of Egyptian culture, and supported by a dissertation focused on finding new pigments for sustainable inks. Says Priti Patel: “Print as a modern medium

fascinates me and I was intrigued to see how the latest printing technologies could breathe new life into colours and designs more generally associated with traditional cultures. I think I have achieved this with the prints represented in my portfolio and I’m so pleased and proud to have been awarded this prize in recognition of all the work put into my portfolio.” A second Epson sponsored Award and Epson EcoTank printer has also been won by Maisy Postlethwaite — a Level 4 Arts, Design and Media Facility student, who participated in an Epson project undertaken as part of the Level 4 year’s coursework. The Epson project gave students the opportunity to collaborate with some of the company’s finest technical specialists and explore all the possibilities print has to offer. Miss Postlethwaite was given the award in recognition of her overall contribution to the project and her creative approach to print. Continues Heather Kendle: “Epson places a huge value on working with students and giving them opportunities to engage with print. Both Priti and Maisy are worthy recipients of the awards this year, but we would also like to take the opportunity to thank all the students who we worked with during the course of the year, and who submitted some incredibly creative and inspiring work. We hope that by demonstrating the true power of print in a world of multi-channel communications, as well as collaborating closely with the creative

leaders of tomorrow, we’re fostering a long term connection between print and creativity that will give these future leaders the tools to succeed in the creative industries.” www.epson.co.uk

Iain Robertson: new Print Scotland president Print Scotland, the trade association and the voice of Scotland’s graphic communication industry, has appointed Iain Robertson as President. He will serve a two-year term. Susan Graham, a senior executive at Charles Letts, has been appointed vice-President. Mr Robertson, who was formerly vice-President, has spent fortyseven years in the industry and is a consultant to his family print business JJR Print of Dumbarton. He takes over from Kevin Creechan, MD of J Thomson Colour Printers, who has served five years in the role. Speaking at the organisation’s 108th annual general meeting in Glasgow, Mr Robertson said: “Print Scotland has come a long way under Kevin’s leadership, and by engaging directly with customers

and Government he has helped make the print industry in Scotland highly visible. “As President I intend to continue this trend by working closely with our director Garry Richmond to reach out and seek to broaden the scope of Print Scotland

by welcoming new members whose activities, which embrace new technologies, can be some way away from the traditional perception of printing. “We offer all of them a range of valuable benefits, including my number one priority, the training of apprentices where we are continuing to make great progress.” Print Scotland oversees training for Modern Apprentices through the Scottish Training Scheme, which provides a grant from the Scottish Government to cover the cost of the training. It also provides a range of Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) as well as Modern Apprenticeship (MA) certification. “Our members, and the 5500 people who work in Scotland’s printing industry, face a significant

succession gap in the next ten years, as highly-skilled and knowledgeable staff set on retiring are not being replaced in sufficient numbers. “I see it as my duty as President to address that issue head-on and to work towards telling more and more young people about the huge career opportunities which can open before them as a result of undertaking an apprenticeship in our industry. “The print industry in Scotland is demonstrating slow but steady signs of growth year-on-year, and despite challenging times, there are great opportunities to be grasped, not least through greater engagement with both central and local government in Scotland with whom we now have, for the first time, regular dialogue.” www.print-scotland.com

THE PRINT SHOW IN BRIEF

HYBRID UNVEIL MORE MIMAKI TECHNOLOGY Hybrid Services unveiled a series of new products at The Print Show. The new hardware announcements spanned the Mimaki Sign and Graphics range providing visitors front-row seats to UK & Ireland, European and worldwide launches.

[T]

he Print Show played host to the worldwide premier of the brand new Mimaki JV300Plus Series super-fast wide format solvent printer and the CJV300Plus Series integrated printer/cutter, as Brett Newman, Chief Operations Manager at Hybrid Services reveals; “We’re delighted to have been able to wow visitors to The Print Show with the global launch of these two next generation products from Mimaki that have a number of additional features and benefits that we are certain will impress the market.” Available at 1.6m wide, both the Mimaki CJV300Plus and JV300Plus are set to dramatically reduce waste with the introduction of new 600ml ink bags that are simply placed within a reusable eco cartridge, which comes as a welcome introduction with the increasing focus of the industry on improving environmental standards. “Not only will these 600ml ink bags increase the green credentials of the Mimaki range, they will significantly reduce ink costs, providing greater profitability to print providers,” continues Newman. The Mimaki CJV300Plus Series printer/cutter features a new ID Cut function to make printing and cutting easier and faster. The barcode, read by the registration mark sensor on the CJV300Plus printer/cutter, contains cutting and rotation information allowing the machine to automate the cutting process. This function is particularly useful when running nested print-cut jobs, as the cutter continuously reads the data

for both single and combined jobs. Other enhancements include a production mode for blasting through high speed print runs and the latest Mimaki core technologies, including Mimaki Advanced Pass System (MAPS4) ensure seamless functionality and consistently high quality prints. Further additions include increased weight capacity on the take-up unit and improved media feeding accuracy and correction, opening up a variety of heavier weight and thicker media.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS Thanks to our contributors for these photographs sent in as the show was still live and kicking as we put this issue to bed. Early reports from visitors, exhibitors and the show organisers (as these quick snaps portray) confirm a very happy and busy exhibition. New product launch reports next issue...

October 2019

The new Mimaki JV300Plus Series and CJV300Plus Series are accompanied by a further new global first: the release of the brand new Mimaki CG-FXIIPlus cutter, which also houses the new ID Cut function utilising barcodes for error reduction, increased efficiency and a 25% increase in cutting pressure. Making its European debut at The Print Show was the brand new Mimaki SWJ-320EA super wide solvent printer. “This was a great opportunity for visitors to set eyes on this highspeed and quality printer that is anticipated to take the large format indoor and outdoor markets by storm,” states Newman. The Print Show also played host to the first public presentation of the new Mimaki JFX2002513EX 8’ x 4’ flatbed LED UV printer. Thanks to a new print head configuration, the JFX2002513EX doubles output speeds when printing with white ink in all print modes and with the addition of a new draft mode, a 280% speed increase, resulting in a maximum speed of 35sq metres per hour. “The Mimaki JFX200 is the flatbed of choice for many reasons,” Newman remarks. “The new model is faster and even easier to use and looks set to continue the range’s dominance in the sector.” Hybrid will also present Mimaki’s multiaward-winning UCJV Series LED UV printer/ cutters that offer a highly versatile solution for print professionals looking for a creative and productive edge, along with the popular, awardwinning Mimaki UJF-3042MkII for direct-toobject printing and a selection of other Mimaki technology. www.hybridservices.co.uk

Vivid: bringing your cutting in-house Vivid Laminating Technologies Ltd unveiled its new flat-bed cutter, the Velo Blade, at The Print Show. The most cost effective digital die-cutter on the market enables printers to extend the services they offer, create unique and intricate products as well as remove the need for outsourcing. Vivid Sales Director, Richard Marlow said; “Traditionally, the cost of bringing quality cutting in-house hasn’t been a feasible option for most print shops, which led us to launch the Velo Blade. Collaborating with our customers to understand what would make their businesses better and lives easier, it became clear that less outsourcing and expanding their customer base was the way to go. Velo Blade opens up completely new markets in packaging and point of sale giving print suppliers the platform they need to further their offering and grow the business. We’re incredibly excited to see the impact it’s going to have”. The automated Velo Blade is a production line within itself. The combination of cutting, creasing and perforating in a single pass with auto-feed, conveyor belt and collection tray, allows for completely unattended production. So, not only is the Velo Blade positioned at an attractive price, but it is also a great efficiency saver. Load 100mm of up to 1.5mm or 1200gsm stock and let the Velo Blade do its thing. Gantry mounted vacuum clamps operate alongside air separation jets, feeding your stock into production. From here, an Industrial CCD registration camera picks out registration marks to align the cutting head. Then, the accurate

and durable tungsten steel blade carries out the cutting process, whilst the high quality vacuum grip conveyor belt holds stock securely in place. Once all cutting, creasing and perforating is complete, the stock is automatically stacked in the collection tray. The Velo Blade is a versatile system that caters to a variety of stocks and sizes ranging between 210mmx297mm to 600mmx400mm. Whether it’s paper, plastic board, PVC board, PU, cardboard, rubber sheet or marking film, it can cut it. It’s also a quick system, cutting at

up to 1000mm/s with SRA3 taking between 15 – 45 seconds per sheet, depending on the complexity of the cut or crease. Launched to compliment Vivid’s already impressive range of print finishing systems, the Velo Blade means Vivid can now provide its customers high quality laminating, cutting, creasing and perforating tools that enable them to reduce outsourcing costs, improve efficiency and create eye-catching unique products that wow their customers every time. www.vivid-online.com or call 01530 510946.

‘Love Paper’ campaign Love Paper is part of a global initiative to increase consumer awareness of the sustainability of print, paper and paper packaging. The new campaign comes with a brand new identity, newly-designed print ads, a new consumer focused website (www.lovepaper.org) featuring a paper ‘fact file’ as well as inspiring blogs and stories, a captivating animated video, plus many new digital tools to help reach and inform wider audiences. The Love Paper campaign re-launches at a time of unprecedented media and public debate about sustainable products, materials and packaging. As consumers and brands become more conscious of the environmental impacts of the products and packaging we use; paper and paper packaging are increasingly recognised for their unique sustainable features: made from renewable raw materials, recyclable and biodegradable. Greg Selfe, Country Manager for Two Sides UK, says, “Never has there been such widespread attention on the environmental credentials of the products and materials we use. The plastics debate, ignited by Sir David Attenborough’s Blue Planet 2, has fuelled a seismic shift in both public and business attitudes towards sustainability. This debate has led more people to appreciate that paper can be an environmentally sound choice for reading materials, communications and packaging solutions, but there is still a significant underestimation of just how sustainable paper and paper packaging is.” A 2019 survey commissioned by Two Sides found that a staggering 63% of European consumers believe European forests are shrinking in size. In fact, these forests, which provide 90% of the fresh fibre used by the European pulp and paper industry, have been growing by an area equivalent to 1,500 football pitches every day. The survey also revealed that only a fifth of consumers are aware of paper and paper packaging’s exceptionally high recycling rate of 72%. Despite some of these misconceptions about paper’s impact on the environment, surveys commissioned by Two Sides highlight a steady improvement in consumer attitudes. For instance, in 2016 just 5% of UK consumers believed European forests were growing. By 2019, this had increased to 11%. Public perceptions about paper’s recycling rate have also been improving. In 2016 only 8% of UK adults surveyed understood the

European paper recycling rate was over 60%. In 2019, this has increased significantly to 17%. Selfe continues, “Although there is still a long way to go, it’s fantastic to see perceptions of paper continue to improve. We are confident the Love Paper campaign has played a significant part in this. Since its origin, the Love Paper campaign has reached tens of millions of consumers in the UK alone. This has been thanks to the support of newspaper and magazine publishers donating millions of pounds of advertising space. The Love Paper ads appear regularly in leading titles including The Times, The Sun, Evening Standard, Metro, Daily Mirror, Daily Mail, Financial Times, The Economist, and dozens of popular consumer and B2B magazines.”

Publisher support

Doug Wills, Managing Editor of the Evening Standard, says, “From using recycled newsprint and working with sustainable forestry, to campaigning for green lifestyle changes ... the Evening Standard is proud to be part of the newspaper industry in protecting the environment. The Love Paper campaign helps us share this great story with our readers.” Even in today’s digital world, paper remains unique in its ability to touch our lives. Paper is renewable, recyclable and remains the most enjoyable way to read. www.twosides.info • www.lovepaper.org

Datalase promotes sustainability Photonic Printing solutions provider DataLase is planning to use its pioneering personalisation technology to drive change in consumer habits and promote sustainable behaviour towards recycling of disposable hot drinks cups. “As a member of the Paper Cup Recovery and Recycling Group (PCRRG) we are keen to use our VAReLase Cup Solutions technology to raise awareness and push an agenda of behavioural change with regards to disposable cup recycling,” said Laura Rickards, Marketing Manager at DataLase. “We see this as a hugely effective way to help tackle the problem of recyclability through encouraging positive consumer behaviour, helping to close the recycling loop and create a circular economy for disposable hot drink cups.” The incredible VAReLase technology allows hot drink cups to be individually personalised in real-time at the point of sale. The system uses DataLase’s patented laser reactive colour change pigment technology, whereby the cup appears blank until exposed to a laser which activates a

pigment on the cup material and prints the bespoke design straight onto the surface. For more about VAReLase Cup Solutions, visit www.DataLase.com

New Triaprint polypropylene Antalis has introduced Triaprint®, their latest addition to the Antalis sustainable product range. Manufactured by IPB, the extruded polypropylene sheet consists of three layers with a cell structured core and smooth top and bottom layer, both corona treated, making it ideal for screen and UV digital printing. Triaprint has a smooth top and bottom surface, and is an excellent environmentally friendly alternative to the use of foam PVC, foam board and other rigid plastics, as its construction is 100% polypropylene, in turn making it 100% recyclable. The smooth top surface is more akin to the type of finish seen on solid polypropylene such as Antalis’ Priplak range. The sheet sizes Triaprint is available in are

1220 x 2440mm and 1500 x 3050mm, with thickness options of 3.4mm and 5.7mm. Antalis stocks Triaprint in white with other colours available made to order. Key characteristics of the Triaprint sheet include its smooth printable surface, high compression strength, high rigidity and low weight. Additionally, it is made with a fireretardant additive. The possible applications of Triaprint are vast, including POS and display, indoor and outdoor signage, exhibitions and events, and both internal and external hoardings. Paul Neale, Visual Communications Product Manager at Antalis, comments “Antalis is committed to the continued development

of sustainable material alternatives for its customers. Following the recent launch of Xanita Board — a lightweight, robust and sustainable fibre-board manufactured from fibres recovered from recycled cardboard boxes — Triaprint now joins the portfolio. Further products are planned for launch later this year!” www.antalis.co.uk

Ace Binding ready for Christmas Ace Binding estimates the UK’s first Renz Inline 500 Compact automatic punching and binding machine will pay for itself within 18 months. The Birmingham operation also says the system will double its capacity for books and A3 calendars. Director Rob Hart, says: “We were punching separately and wanted a system that would complete A3 calendars in one streamlined process. The Renz Inline 500 Compact makes us 100% more productive. “Last year and the year before we were turning work away. This year in our busy season, that starts in August, we can say yes to the work. We are confident that we can efficiently complete it and to the highest quality.” The flexible Renz Inline 500 Compact delivers significantly increased productivity compared

to semi-automatic machines. It includes a touch screen for easy format changes and QSA (Quick Size Adjustment) technology to reduce set-up times. It is upgradable with various modules to adapt to customer demands. Hart placed the order after he saw the system in action at Hunkeler Innovation days, Lucerne,

in February: “We have a few Renz systems that are a number of years old and they are very reliable. They are also quick and easy to set up and very simple to use. When we saw it in action we knew it would be the same. It will help Ace win new calendar work which Hart hopes will lead to other new orders. He states: “Once we have added new customers we can then talk to them about other services we offer such as PUR binding. We expect to open up a lot more business that way.” It will also make workflow much smoother: “We can get work in and out faster and that means we can work long days. Then if we need to we can add a shift. Overtime has been reduced as well. It has helped us improve our flexibility.” www.renz.co.uk

Label laser-focused Innovation One of tesa’s main distributors in the South West, South Western Specialised Tapes (SWST), based in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, has continued to diversify with the opening of a Label Printing Division. SWST is a major supplier of tapes to many sectors, including Automotive, Industrial, Communications, Construction and Signage. The company has a long history of working closely with tesa, whom they began working with at a time when the adhesive tape specialist was also expanding its product offering from packaging

tapes to more specialised tapes. These common goals set the tone for the ongoing partnership,

exemplified by SWST obtaining tIP (tesa Industrial Partner) status. Recognised as a preferred supplier of technical, high-quality double sided tapes to withstand some of the most demanding applications; SWST quickly spotted an opportunity to provide a wider range of products with a faster and more efficient service to their customers and have now become a prominent supplier of labels. The latest addition to the range of production machinery, the ‘Thunder Laser’ cutter and engraving machine, allows SWST

and tesa to work together and satisfy customer enquiries for a multitude of laser engraved products. The company can now produce laser engravable labels using tesa® 6930 and tesa® 6940 tape ranges, with the ability to serialise each label ensuring this remains with the product for its life span and is tamper proof. The material is also resistant to heat, solvents and UV, so lends itself to a wide range of situations where labels may be applied. Any shape can be produced from an appropriate CAD file. www.tesa.co.uk

Quinn’s ‘open access’ textile print studio Textile and fashion designer Richard Quinn has launched the Richard Quinn Print Studio, a unique textile printworks offering Epson dye sublimation and traditional screen printing services and workshops. Since he graduated from Central St Martins, London, last year with his colourful floral collection, Richard has won the international 2017 H&M Design Award, is one of Dazed Magazine’s ‘Dazed100’ cultural influencers in 2017, and is British Fashion Council’s ‘One to Watch’ in 2017. His new textile print studio based in Peckham, London, features an Epson SureColor SCF9200 digital dye-sublimation printer complementing two manual screen printing lines. The space gives fashion students and designers an affordable facility where they can source their printed textiles and obtain expert advice about different print techniques, dyes, textiles and alternative materials from Richard and his expert technicians. In addition, Richard designs, prints and sews his own haute-couture pieces in the studio and the facility is also available for other designers to print their own textiles onsite if they wish. “I love the SureColor because it produces superb quality printed textiles,” says Richard. “I used Epson printers at Central St Martins for my graduation collection and it was important that I had one here in my studio working around

the clock, producing vibrant colours, and capturing all the fine details and textures I want. This flexible machine gives me the freedom to experiment with many different fabrics and new substrates. It’s great being able to create a textile design, print it and create an outfit — all on site within hours. There is no other studio quite like this one, which is run by a designer for other designers. We provide considerable experience in colour, materials and printing quality fabrics using both digital and traditional processes and that means a lot to designers.” Supporting student designers by providing a reasonably priced print service and educational

workshops is important to Richard: “We have already had a great deal of interest from Central St Martins where I trained and from universities all over the country.” “Richard is one of the new generation of young designers who are using Epson digital textile printing technology to create stunning high fashion collections which attract international recognition and accolades,” says Richard Barrow, Epson Europe. “2017 is going to be a very exciting year for him and we look forward to supporting him as he develops his studio and new collections.” www.richardquinnstudio.co.uk

New Epson commercial photo printer The SureLab SL-D800 commercial photo production printer has been developed for print shops and those who want to expand their printing business, with a wider range of services for their customers, while minimising environmental impact. It’s ideally suited to print shops, photo production businesses, independent photo shops, event photographers, minilabs, copy shops and selfservice terminals, as well as businesses that need to print high-quality mixed print jobs, on demand, on a wide range of media and formats. In order to improve users’ scope of business and meet ever changing and increasingly creative customer demands, the SL-D800 has been designed with media flexibility in mind. It supports glossy, lustre and paper based matte; in roll widths that range from 89mm to 210mm, and lengths of 50mm to 1000mm. This is further complemented by an impressive production speed of 360 (15 x 10cm) photos per hour (PPH) and high print quality, with a wide colour gamut, deep blacks and superior gloss level.

Enhancing the SureLab D800’s cost effectiveness, are its long service intervals and low maintenance requirements, which boosts productivity and ensures users can offer their customers a more consistent and reliable service. Also, power consumption and noise levels have been noticeably reduced thanks to sophisticated heater and fan management, in standby mode. This improved cost efficiency makes the already affordable SL-D800 an even more attractive commercial photo printing solution. Michaela Stolle, product manager, Epson

Europe, says: “The SureLab SL-D800 builds on the success of its predecessor, the SLD700, and all enhancements are in response to customer demand. The SL-D800 is compact (same size as the SL-D700), durable and built for speed, flexibility and high quality commercial photo printing. It’s designed to last and fits seamlessly into the working environment thanks to the rigid, sturdy print tray and improved spindle design. Also, any downtime is significantly reduced due to the intuitive two-step roll change. Being able to provide the complete solution to our users is a major benefit, as we also supply Epson inks, paper and software support — which saves valuable time compared to dealing with multiple suppliers. It’s a welcome addition to the SureLab range.” Whether used as a single unit, or as part of a very powerful production fleet, this commercial photo printer offers quality printing at a low total cost of ownership. The SureLab SL-D800 is available now. www.epson.co.uk

READERS’ SCRIBES

SOMETHING TO SHARE…? Two Eskimos

Two Eskimos were chatting. One said, “Where did your mother come from?” “Alaska.” “Don’t bother, I’ll ask her myself!”

Fisherman’s Tale

One fisherman to another, “You should’ve seen what happened yesterday at the lake.” “What happened?” “I caught a twenty-three pound salmon!” “Were there any witnesses?” “Yes, of course! If there wasn’t, it would’ve been thirty-three pounds.”

Standing at the ATM

Saw a lad standing on one leg at an ATM. Confused, I asked him what he was doing. He was just checking his balance.

Dating chickens

I used to run a dating agency for chickens, but I was struggling to make hens meet!

Loss for words

I ordered a Thesaurus online and it just arrived. The pages are all BLANK! I have no words to express my outrage.

You’re having a giraffe, mate

A man and his pet giraffe walk into a bar and start drinking. As the night goes on, they get drunk, and the giraffe finally passes out. The man decides to go home. As he’s leaving, the man is approached by the barkeeper who says, “Hey, you’re not gonna leave that lying here, are ya?” “Hmph,” says the man. “That’s not a lion, it’s a giraffe!”

What do you call a dog

Friendless golfer

“Bob, why don’t you play golf with John anymore?” asked a friend. “Would you play golf with a guy who moved the ball with his foot when you weren’t watching?” Bob asked. “Well, no,” admitted the friend. “Neither will John,” replied Bob.

Sleeping problem

This guy had a problem of oversleeping. He was always late for work, and his boss was getting mad. So he went to the doctor and got some pills that were supposed to help. That night he slept well and woke up even before the alarm. He had a leisurely breakfast and drove happily to work. “Boss,” he said, “the pill the doctor gave me actually worked!” “That’s fine,” said the boss, “but where were you yesterday?”

Mum’s the word

A wife comes downstairs before a dinner date with her husband. “Do I look fat in this dress?” the wife asks. “Do I look dumb in this shirt?” the husband replies.

Top dog

Two women, who are dog owners, are arguing which dog is smarter. First woman: “My dog is so smart. Every morning he waits for the paperboy to come around and then he takes a newspaper and brings it to me.” Second woman: “I know.” First one: “How?” Second one: “My dog told me.”

that won’t come when you call it,

Top wife

My friend Jim told me that when he asked his wife where she wanted to go on vacation, she said that being married to him was a vacation. When I commented that was a nice thing to say to him, Jim replied, “Well, actually, what she said was I was the ‘last resort.’”

Places I’ve never been

I have been in many places, but I’ve never been in Cahoots. Apparently, you “can’t” go alone. You have to be in Cahoots with someone. I’ve also never been in Cognito. I hear no one recognises you there. I have, however, been in Sane. They don’t have an airport, you have to be driven there. I’ve made several trips there, thanks to my friends, family, and work. I have also been in Doubt. That’s a sad place to go, and I try not to visit too often. I’ve been in Flexible, but only when it was very important to stand firm. One of my favourite places to be is in Suspense. It really gets the adrenaline flowing and pumps up the old heart. At my age I need all the stimuli I can get.

Just the good news and quickly!

One of my employees who was deeply involved in finishing a report for the upcoming board meeting received a call from his wife that had good news and bad news. Because of the deadline he asked if she could just give him the good news. The wife replied “Okay, the good news is that the air bags work.”

refuses to sleep in its bed, and seldom wants to play?

Mystery Ailment

A man went to the doctor with a mystery ailment. The doctor asked: “Do you drink to excess?” The man replied: “I’ll drink to anything.”

Loss for words

I ordered a Thesaurus online and it just arrived. The pages are all BLANK! I have no words to express my outrage.

October Short List

What happened when dog went to the flea circus? He stole the show! What kind of pastry needs a thesaurus? Synonym Rolls. You are so bald... that I can tell what’s on your mind! What do you call a country where everyone has to drive a pink car? A Pink Car-nation! “Where do you see yourself in six months?” “ I don’t know, I don’t have 2020 vision.” How many tickles does it take to make a squid laugh? Ten-tickles! What do you get when you cross a parrot with a centipede? A walkietalkie. What do you call it when you take a picture of your favourite bookcase? A shelf-ie! Who is the coolest doctor in the hospital? The hip consultant. Why did the doctor carry out blood tests on the secretarial candidates? So that he could eliminate type-Os. What did the scientist say when he found two helium atoms? “He-He!”

A cat.
