PJ PRINT ENHANCES PRODUCTION WITH HORIZON PF-40L General commercial Ipswich operation PJ Print has elevated responsiveness in its digital print department with a Horizon PF-40L folder from Intelligent Finishing Systems. The new addition was chosen to enhance the fast and flexible production of short run jobs. It is handling digital print from Ricoh Pro C7200 and Ricoh Pro 8320 digital presses. Ben Perkins, Managing Director, explains: “We are being asked to handle smaller runs and meet faster turnaround times. After reviewing our digital print department we decided a small dedicated folder would be perfect to manage the workload in a streamlined way.” He continues: “We recently installed a Horizon BQ-270V perfect binder so we know Horizon well and like its
systems. The build quality is good and the solutions are easy to use. The folder is no exception. It went in very well and does the job.” PJ Print’s PF-40L combines high volume suction feed capabilities with intelligent automation. The 1,000 sheet capacity top fed system is the same suction feed system used on the highly popular VAC Collators. Its push button control panel enables any user to set-up for the six most popular fold patterns of standard cut sheet sizes. The paper size range for the PF-40L is from 5” x 5” to 12.6” x 24.8” and thicknesses from 50gsm to 90gsm cover without requiring prescoring or creasing. Memory capacity allows for easy programming of ten unique fold patterns and/or nonstandard sheet sizes to be recalled at any time. www.ifsl.uk.com
INSITU GROUP FIRST FOR DURST Insitu Group has become the UK and Ireland’s first user of Durst’s P5 350 all in one hybrid solution for flexible roll and board printing, the industry’s ‘best technology platform’. This is the centre piece of a major investment that takes quality and productivity into a new era, as well as opening up new markets. Unattended overnight production, five layer printing options and multi-roll track systems mean more than one customer job can be run at the same time at different speeds. These are among the major benefits of the P5 purchase from Durst, manufacturer of advanced digital printing and production technologies. Installed just before lockdown, Damian Loach, Insitu Group’s Managing Director, said: “The P5 is amazing and provides the highest single output of any machine by far. It has trebled capacity. Previously we were losing out on jobs because operational times are now so demanding. You have to be extremely reactive. Often it’s a next day delivery requirement. “That’s one of the reasons why unattended printing is so useful. We can produce 600 square metres overnight. Another really important feature is the multi-track roll function where orders from more than one customer jobs can be printed at the same time in varying volumes. The Durst Print Workflow software and the monitoring tool Durst Analytics are also key to our success. We can achieve so much more output, thanks to automated functions. The P5 has added to our original printers, giving us a further 178 metres an hour, upping our capacity to 500 metres per hour. This gives us control and capacity with tight timeframes without having to outsource or rely on others.” The four colour with white option P5 is the cornerstone of Leicester based Insitu Group’s print division, Intoprint Digital, which also boasts extensive cutting and finishing capabilities. The £10 million turnover Insitu Group started as a shop fitting business 24 years ago and has expanded into many other markets other than print. Clients include some of the world’s major brands in retail, cosmetic and other sectors. New market pushes include construction and health sectors. Mr Loach added: “Delivering high levels of service in specific time frames is key. We’ve had an amazing experience with Durst and the support of local engineers is great too. We are really proud to become the first company in the UK and Ireland to receive the P5 and be at the cutting edge of technology. This is the best technology platform available. Despite these uncertain times, we are glad we invested and are confident of future growth where we expect our print business to grow rapidly in the next few years.

“We spent a lot of time searching for what we feel is the best machine on the market, with quality foremost as we have a reputation for providing a second to none service with some of the world’s most famous brands in retail, clothing and cosmetics markets. Now we are confident of being able to expand our offerings in much bigger markets. Print is relevant to all our business, getting brand awareness out there in the eyes of the consumers has always been key. The significance of the five layer option is that it’s essential to world brands, keeping suppliers the same around the globe.” Peter Bray, Managing Director of Durst UK & Ireland, said: “P5 is our technology and innovation platform for large format specialists. Insitu Group was the first of several P5 installations that have taken place this year, which is part of our expanded portfolio that comes complete with integrated workflow and analytics software. It’s a perfect example of how, in an integrated world, printers need to change as well. With the P5 family we provide tools for change and profit as part of our commitment to continue to lead the innovation in the large format market.” www.durst-group.com

“THE EPSON NAILED IT” — WITH SEDO SURECOLOR Worcester’s Sign Here struggled to match a vibrant shade of orange for a vehicle wrap, until it invested in a new Epson SureColor S80600 from reseller SEDO. Sign Here is a full spectrum sign specialist covering every facet of print and design. Since its launch in 2001 it has grown to become one of the leading sign manufacturers in Worcestershire, with a work ethic that has earned a growing list of customers nationwide. “At Sign Here we have always pursued a ‘can do’ philosophy: whatever the project, we can do it,” comments Kevin Mahoney, Owner, Sign Here. “We can match any print and design requirement from vehicle graphics to specialist retail and healthcare signage, embroidery and printed clothing to business cards. Whatever you need, we can do it.” However, when Kevin and his team were commissioned for a tricky vehicle wrap project, Sign Here’s wide format printers fell short. “We took on a catering vehicle wrap that required printing a really vibrant orange with burgundy overlay and our existing printers couldn’t match the brief,” he explains. “It was time to update the system. I talked to some people, and that was when I heard about the Epson S-Series S80600.” The Epson SureColor S80600 eco-solvent printer is renowned for its reliability, image durability, precision sharpness and colour fidelity. It therefore meets the exacting needs of professional sign makers, printers and designers, and those in the photographic and fine art sector. Its extensive colour gamut, including orange, red, light cyan, light magenta and light black alongside high-quality CMYK, allows users to match 98% of
the Pantone range. Not only did Sign Here’s new SureColor S80600 print the required vivid orange, it hits the kind of greys that once gave Kevin a headache. In addition to the new printer, supplied with ONYX RIP software, Sign Here invested in a Summa S class 1600 cutter. “The system’s ability to print and cut are seamless. Jobs that used to take up to an hour are now completed in 15 minutes,” says Kevin. “When it came to colour, the Epson nailed it, and I’ve used a Summa cutter for years. This is a bigger version of the one we already own. They are bullet proof, reliable technology. Together they have future proofed our business.” Sign Here sourced the new machines through Basildon-based SEDO, again through recommendation. “We approached a few resellers but Andy McGuinness and his team at SEDO seemed keen to make sure we got what
we needed,” says Kevin. “Andy was great, really helpful.” SEDO’s Managing Director Andy McGuiness comments: “We work with the leading large and wide format manufacturers and take a holistic approach to all our customers’ needs, including printers, consumables and finishing. Our team of advisers bring over 70 years’ experience to any print problem. “Sign Here’s very specific requirement for depth of colour, and to speed up production, made the SC-S80600 an obvious choice. It uses Dual PrecisionCore TFP printheads and UltraChrome GS3 inks for more vibrant colours, and print can be displayed outdoors for up to three years without fading, perfect for a vehicle wrap. It was a pleasure to work with Kev and his team.” www.signhereworcester.com www.sedoltd.co.uk

IPIA URGES MORE PRINT IN SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGIES In the wake of the Government committing £350 million to fuel a ‘green recovery’, the Independent Print Industry Association (IPIA) is urging brands and marketers to re-look at print as they plan their sustainability strategies. IPIA CEO Marian Stefani says: “The national outcry recently at the demise of the Argos catalogue is a good illustration of how nostalgically brands are looking at print and it little reflects either the nation’s perception of sustainability or how much greener and much Marian Stefani more effective print can be.” Recent research by Essity* reveals that 81% of consumers say sustainability and the environment are now more important because of Covid-19. The report reflected both the nation’s confusion over sustainability but also their willingness to understand how to be greener and prepared to pay more for it (average +12% more*). “People (63%†) get it that paper and card are better for the environment, and 38%* are already looking for information about sustainability on packaging,” says Marian. She says however, that brands don’t seem to be aware of the quiet revolution that’s been going on in print, how newer techniques can not only make a massive difference to the environment but also to a brand’s bottom line. Better profiling and smaller print runs are now much more effective when it comes to ROI. “While ‘one size fits all’ print approaches may no longer be relevant, print-
based communication can be done creatively but tailored to reflect the brand’s identity or regionality. This in turn generates a stronger customer experience, which drives stronger engagement and ultimately more sales,” claims Marine Kerivel Brown, International Marketing Manager for Duplo International Ltd. “ “If the Argos decision was based purely on saving cost, it might realise quickly it could be damaging its long term relationship with customers for the sake of short-term budget cuts. I suspect it’s smarter than that and may already be working with a trusted UK printer to identify a creative and sustainable way to transform its existing printed catalogue into a more manageable printed solution that drives sales by delivering a more immersive customer experience that still reflects its environmental stance. Because at the end of the day, nothing beats the brand in your hand,” offers Marine. The IPIA claims most of its members are already investing in technology that uses less energy, more environmentally friendly inks and FSC certified paper sources. And consumers (42%)* are already seeking out products accredited by sustainability groups; they trust third party certifications such as the FSC*. “All we’re asking brands and marketers to do in this ‘green recovery’ is to revisit their perception of print, especially direct mail. If they exclude it as a channel they could be missing a trick, not just in terms of sustainability but also in building lasting connections with customers. 86%1 of people like keeping catalogues and referring to them; time will tell what Argos has up its sleeve next,” concludes Marian. www.ipia.org.uk * Source: The Green Recovery, research by Essity †Source: European Packaging Preferences 2020 study by Two Sides .1 Source: ‘Physically Irresistible’ report by MarketReach
LEA PRINTERS INVEST IN HORIZON STITCHLINER MKIII Kent technology based print solutions provider Lea Printers has invested in a Horizon StitchLiner MKIII to manage increasingly varied run lengths and a broader work mix. Founded in 1992, Lea Printers produces litho print on a Mitsubishi LS Diamond 1000 five colour and coater and two B3 Heidelberg two colour presses – a SpeedMaster and a GTO 5. Digital print is completed on a Xerox Versant and two black and white HPs. Clients include Sony, London Stock Exchange, Grey Goose, Bollinger, Bacardi, and UEFA. With run lengths getting shorter and turnaround times getting tighter Tristan Gill, Managing Director, explains the operation wanted a solution that would enable greater production flexibility and agility. “We had an older Hohner but demand has changed with runs getting smaller and smaller. We looked around and found the Horizon StitchLiner is the industry standard. We liked its ability to fold which removes the need for the separate process and saves time. It is also easy to set up so any operator is comfortable running it. We can complete a lot more short run jobs faster and that will enable us to expand capacity. Lea Printers’ 6,000 sheets per hour system includes the new high capacity VAC-L600H
6
collators and their 130mm deep trays. They are more than double the depth of the 55mm trays on 10 station collators. This equates to 2.3 times less down time for loading and greater uptime. The new collators can handle a wider range of substrates enabling greater flexibility and their intelligent operation allows them to feed digital work that has been printed `in page order’. It also has the option of Ultrasonic detection and a double length delivery stream. The StitchLiner was installed as part of a five year plan and it is expected to play a key role in streamlining production as the business returns to pre-pandemic levels. Gill says: “It will help us be much more versatile and agile.” Despite social distancing restrictions the installation was smooth: “It went in seamlessly,” adds Tristan. “We are very happy with it.” www.ifsl.uk.com

EPSON ANNOUNCES ITS FIRST RESIN INK LFP With the launch of the SureColor SC-R5000 Series Epson has expanded its signage printer line up to include a resin ink solution, offering print service providers and creative design agencies the ability to produce a wide range of signage and high value applications with environmentally friendly, outstanding results. The new R Series addresses the existing industry challenges of working with resin-based inks, and draws from Epson’s years of innovation in imaging, colour management and substrate control, delivering an ideal solution. The new 64 inch printer offers exceptional print performance and colour control thanks to the PrecisionCore Micro TFP printhead. Precise temperature control, which is monitored by four temperature sensors, ensures colour is consistent from edge to edge and top to bottom. Three independent heating stations (preheat / platen heat / post-cure heat) ensure colour uniformity and adept media handling. The efficient drying and curing process enables lamination and same day delivery so users can reduce turnaround times. The long-life PrecisionCore Micro TFP printhead means accurate and repeatable colour from first print to the very last. As Piezo printheads are not subjected to thermal degradations, droplet placement and dot sizes remain consistent throughout the life of the printhead. When the printhead does need replacing, it can be carried out by the operator, boosting uptime and productivity. Class leading Advanced Auto Tension Control (Ad-ATC) offers highly accurate dimensional stability required for tiled work such as window displays and wall coverings. This consistent repeatability saves material wastage, installation time and provides seamless results for the customer. The new six colour UltraChrome RS inkset is an odourless, water based resin ink and is suitable for use in any environments such as schools, hospitals, hotels and indoor facilities. The bulk ink solution has the option of 1.5 litre ink pouches for medium print volume outputs and a hot swappable two set of inks for high print volumes, which is available on the SC-R5000L. Tom Owers, Pro Graphics product manager at Epson UK says, “We have listened to our customers and understood the demand for quality, productivity, reliability and stable colour performance within the resin ink market. introduction of the SC-R5000, we are now able to meet all of these demands. With our line-up of Eco-solvent, UV and now resin inksets, Epson is the onestop-shop for all signage, POS and interior décor requirements.” Key features of the SC-R5000 include: • Epson UltraChrome RS ink — resin ink with wide colour gamut • High levels of scratch resistance • GreenGuard Gold, AgBB and French-VOC certification • Accurate feeding and take-up roll system - provides roll to roll print for superb productivity • Advanced Auto Tension Control (Ad-ATC) for accurate and stable media feeding • Operator replaceable parts (user replaceable printhead) • Newly designed three station heater (preheat / platen heat / post-cure heat) • Bulk Ink Solution — 1.5lt ink pouches for medium print volume users and 2 X 1.5lt ink pouches for high print volume users, supported by hot swap function • 4.3 inch touch panel for intuitive operation • Epson Edge Print RIP software for easy set up The SC-R5000 will be available from December 2020. www.epson.co.uk
INTERNATIONAL PAPER SUPPORTS FIGHT TO BEAT BREAST CANCER International Paper, is delighted to be continuing with its HP Office ‘Pink Ream’ campaign in 2020 in partnership with Think Pink Europe, which brings together national breast cancer initiatives across the continent. This will be the 4th consecutive year for the HP Office Pink Ream, following a successful on-going campaign which has raised over €400k across Europe. In the UK, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer, with one woman diagnosed every 10 minutes and around 58,000 people diagnosed with breast cancer every year. Thankfully, almost two thirds of women diagnosed with breast cancer today now survive their disease beyond 20 years. The Pink Ream campaign was launched in Europe in 2017 with distinctive, specially designed
8
packaging for reams of HP Office paper. For each Pink Ream sold, International Paper donated £0.10 to UK programmes focusing on breast cancer research, awareness and prevention. The campaign was honoured as ‘Initiative of the Year’ at the European Office Products Awards the following year. The HP Office Pink Ream will be available to consumers throughout October (worldwide Breast Cancer Awareness Month) and November. The money raised will support a variety of European breast cancer projects through Think Pink Europe. In the UK, a percentage of funds raised will go to the Pink Ribbon Foundation. International Paper proudly partner with Think Pink Europe alongside 25 further organisations who are part of the Think Pink Europe community. All across
Europe, local breast cancer organisations, hospitals, support groups and governmental organisations are aiming for the same objective: funding research and raising awareness to tackle breast cancer. Among the many activities supported by Think Pink Europe is the flagship initiative, The Race for the Cure®, the world’s biggest walking and running event in the fight against breast cancer. This year, with major sporting events being postponed or cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, www.raceforthecure.eu will go digital all over the continent in 34 countries. Continuing with Race for the Cure®, albeit in challenging circumstances, will provide a vital lifeline in helping breast cancer patients, healthcare workers and hospitals collect funds and continue to raise awareness.
International Paper has been manufacturing and marketing the HP Papers brand under exclusive licence since 2000. HP is synonymous with quality, reliable printing performance and innovative advances. ZECHINI LAUNCHES DIARY AND NOTEBOOK RANGE
Established in 1952, Italian company Zechini has become the specialist manufacturer of bookbinding and converting machines for short, medium and longer runs of hardcase books. They have recently developed a new range of modules which cater to fine stationery production such as diaries and notebooks, as well as educational and professional literature. The four new machines are introduced in the absence of drupa and are positioned for individual investment to speed up and sharpen existing processes, or as a package to win over new markets with higher efficiency/quality ratios. The Zagor, which is a two head corner rounding machine for hard cover books, has new heated tools which ensure a perfect result with a wide
range of board diameters. The Asso is a pen loop machine which automatically applies a pen loop on a cardboard book cover. The Guizzo is an elastic band machine – it inserts and glues an elastic band onto hard covers of diaries, agendas, folders, blocks and boxes. Last but not least the Phantom; a two headed corner cutting machine that trims or cuts the corners of books, pocket diaries and notebooks (paper blocks). As is the prerequisite for Zechini, the range has been engineered to the highest degree of quality for a robust, consistent and precise machine that will outlive everything but its re-sale value. The range is available immediately in the UK via Friedheim International. www.friedheim.co.uk

ASHGATE INSTALLS FIRST FASTBIND PUREVA SMART BINDER Page Visions, a commercial printer in Slough has installed the UK’s first Fastbind Pureva Smart binder which complements the Fastbind Casematic A46Z Smartcasemaker and the Fastbind EVA XT hot melt binder which they recently bought from Ashgate. “The Fastbind equipment suits us perfectly because it is so easy to use and produces a quality product every time. This is very important because we have a large finishing department with15 people in two shifts, operating all the Fastbind machines,” explained Iwona Wytrzymala, Finishing Manager. “Whenever they bring out something new where we can see the benefits of faster, easier and more consistent production, we always look at it first. We’ve known Ashgate and appreciated their service for so long. In the last seven years we have bought seven machines from them, including casemakers, binders, gluing equipment and laminators, all of which are still operational. Sometimes we are so busy that we have to bring one of our older pieces of Fastbind equipment out of store and it works every time” Page Visions has a business to business and an online department where customers can order over the web. “During the lockdown, more and more customers placed their orders over the web and are still doing so. If they place their orders in the morning then we commit to finishing them the same day which can be quite a challenge,” said Iwona. “In my department we finish a wide range of hard and soft back books, photo albums, school books etc. from one to whatever the customer wants but the cut off is usually about a hundred.” They are printed on digital and posterpresses from Canon, Vario Print and HP for large format. The Pureva Smart semi automated binder is the natural succession to the Fastbind PUREVA XT manual binder. Both machines are the only models on the market which can bind both soft and hard back books up to A3 portrait with the choice of PUR or EVA glue adhesive applications. Page produce books in A5 and A4, portrait and landscape format. “Due to the speed at which we have to turn the books round, we are using EVA glue because it is quicker to dry and finish. However, it is useful to have a machine that can do both. In future it gives us the opportunity to take on much longer runs where we have more time to use the PUR glue,” Iwona commented. This fully equipped, ergonomic workstation is compact, silent, clean and safe. The binding process is simplified by a clever use of automation. The operator inputs the parameters for the book with predefined programmes like the type of cover, type of paper and format, via the user interface on the seven inch digital touch screen. With this information the machine self-adjusts to create the best possible binding. The operator controls all the critical steps to make a quality book. Roughening, gluing and nipping functions are automated for precision and consistency. It calculates automatically the optimal pressure by adjusting the rail height, speed and number of cycles for roughening and gluing steps as
well as the nipping time for each book according to format, thickness and cover type. Thanks to its electronic temperature control, it can use different types of bookbinding hot melt glues. Its auto cleaning system makes quick work of cleaning or changing tanks. To safeguard the operator, a light curtain acts as a presence detection device and immediately stops the on-going operation as soon as any possible danger is detected. It works well in conjunction with the Casematic A46, Fastbind’s first semiautomated cover maker. Page use it for A5 and A4 portrait and landscape covers. “It’s faster and more consistent than the manual casemaker,” said Iwona. The automation makes the operator’s work more accurate and covers and cases can be produced quickly with no set up time. While staying in control all the time. There are not stops between jobs or production bottlenecks. A vacuum maintains the sheet in place. Then the guides are automatically lifted and the air table assist moves the cover around. The folding unit uses a mechanical clamp to turn the edges, helping the finishing department to move the book onto the next stage. “We work well with Ashgate. They are friendly and helpful. In many cases they can sort out our queries over the phone but if we do need them to come out, they are very quick to respond, which is essential in a busy finishing department like ours,” Iwona concluded. www.ashgate.co.uk
EPSON ANNOUNCES CLOUD SOLUTION PORT For customers looking to increase their productivity and improve planning and costing of their print production, Epson announces the introduction of Cloud Solution PORT. The platform is a cloud-based service that supports Epson large format printers and can be accessed from multiple devices including PCs, smartphones and tablets. Customers will be able to monitor printers across several locations, from the production floor, or remotely, using configurable dashboards with clear graphics to analyse productivity and receive operational updates about the print jobs, ink levels and maintenance status – minimising downtime

OLD DOG, NEW-ISH TRICKS
Something Martin Christie learnt from enforced furlough is that he has no desire to retire to a rocking chair in front of daytime TV, or to the links of a local Golf Club to endure what the good Dr Samuel Johnson identified as “...a good walk spoilt”.
O
ne thing that kept me relatively sane was being able to take unspoilt walks on the nearby South Downs. As a photographer, of course, my third arm had to come with me, and people being out of social reach, subjects began with the inevitable landscapes and soon progressed to ornithology. Unlike most wildlife, birds are all around us, but we barely notice them in normal times, especially their variety and behaviour, all of which are very individual. I was a bit of a bird spotter when I was young, so I had form, but never tried to photograph them before. But as someone who had started back in the day shooting motorcycle racing, I didn’t think a little feathered bundle would be much of a challenge. Wrong. I might have had the experience of shooting motorcycles travelling at 100 mph, but they follow a course and turn at predictable corners on similar racing lines. Birds just do their own thing, chasing prey, partners, or just enjoying the fun of flight. So my first attempts were absolutely rubbish until I could work out what was going wrong and what I needed to do to make them better. Essentially I had made the fundamental mistake of allowing the camera to do most of the work for me. I had a little help by consulting online tutorials from professionals with much more experience of the genre than me, and the advice was not only choosing the best lens and technical settings on the camera, but also a better understanding of the subject matter. In this case, it meant being a little more patient, and following behaviour rather than apparent random movements. Resisting the temptation to just point-and-shoot was the key to better pictures. And that is the secret to all good photography, as well as confirmation you can still teach an old dog new tricks. I may never make an award-winning wildlife photographer, but at least I can now take pictures I’m not embarrassed by. The main reason I mention this lesson is not just to fill you in on my lockdown activity, but as an example that having the kit is one thing, and knowing how to use it in the right circumstances is quite another. The curse of the instant snapper has become all too familiar to the digital printer, whether produced by the novice or the so-called expert. Whether taken with an over-hyped specification mobile phone 14
or a reasonably capable camera, it’s what you do with it that makes the difference. When we started this column twenty years ago, digital photography was just a novelty which might have some relevance for the print industry. Now it has become universal, it is commonly just accepted without any thought as it is so easy to share images on portable devices. It’s only when it comes to print that the problems arise, and most of them are the result of someone just pressing a button and leaving the rest to science. As a photographer, I appreciate that everyone
can now enjoy the excitement of the visual image in a way that was never possible with film. The very fact that you can now playback results instantly rather than waiting for them to be processed is a massive aid to perfect pictures. It’s just that the immediacy has to some degree, diluted the magic and the mystery. Modern digital cameras of all types have moved in the same direction as predictive text, to anticipate what the user will want in terms of settings with preset options or increasingly intelligent automated processes. But like any
OCTOBER 2020 • QUICK PRINT PRO
PIXEL PROPHET automaton, they only approximate human judgement, not entirely replace it. And of course, the electronic illusion of what appears on the small screen doesn’t always translate into the real quality of the picture. The reality is in the hard copy print that reflects the actual composition of the file. The most familiar question from a customer is how big an image will go, and this is not entirely a matter of how many pixels are in it, though it may be a clue. If you are not a regular reader, I will give you my entirely random rule of thumb guide to size. Check the pixel dimensions, say 1400 x1200 which is the size of an average phone pic or social media post. Take away the last two digits, and you have 14 x 12, and that’s a quick guestimate of what is what it will go to in centimetres. Not an absolutely accurate prediction but at least it is a starting point to clear any illusions of it going to life-size for example. All digital images, whether photographed, scanned or downloaded, are pixel dependent. They have a definite size which if you try and push beyond their capabilities will not look great. Unless that’s the zagged, mottled effect the customer wanted, it’s better to advise them on that as they are only ever going to blame your printing, not their photography skills. Pixels apart, other factors affecting the size of reproduction involve sharpness, clarity and colour, all of which are in some ways related. Most cameras now do its focusing automatically, but they need a reference point like a definite line or object to compare with. They are getting more sophisticated with advances like facial recognition, but they are not infallible and can be confused. The focus range of the actual lens may not enable all of the subject to be completely in focus, and the speed at which the electric eye blinks may also cause blurring if it is too slow and affected by motion in the subject or even slight camera movement during capture. In difficult, especially in low light conditions, these failures are particularly common, along with colour registration as the digital sensors will struggle to differentiate between one pixel hue and another. Like our own eyes, the camera relies on reflected light to see but doesn’t have the multi-adjustment modes that most humans have after millennia of evolution. Some of the faults can be corrected to a degree on the computer. Certainly, as cameras have improved over the years, so has the software available to service them. But there is a limit to what can be recovered, especially if the customer has made some attempts to edit the image in advance. Apps that may look great on a phone do not translate well into print. Sharpening, for example, will generally increase the contrast between one pixel and another so that they leap out on a screen, but may not look so attractive in print. One point to be considered is that the sharpness of an image may not be quite so important if it is a good picture and is going to QUICK PRINT PRO • OCTOBER 2020
be viewed from a distance, like a big poster on a wall. But if it is going to be studied in minute detail, then clarity is crucial. Unfortunately, movies and popular TV crime shows give a false impression of what detail can be enhanced and faces revealed from seemingly obscure snapshots. If it were possible, CCTV would cause a lot more collars to be felt. Colour is one of the most problematic issues. As with the previous problems, the camera can only register what it sees, not what the user thinks it sees. Our eyes adjust so that we register known colours as correct even as light conditions change. A fire engine is still the same colour to us in the afternoon as it was in the morning even though the sun has moved across the sky. To the automated camera red will tend to be a little more blue at the beginning of the day, and a little more orange towards the end of it. And that apparently subtle difference in hue may make a big difference turned into print where the coloured pixels are turned into toner and ink. In a world dominated by images brightly backlit and projected on large screen televisions, billboards and buildings as well
as mobiles, the significance of reflected light is difficult to appreciate, and only recognised when it fails to deliver the expected result. If you’ve ever had to send a customer outside the shop to check the colour match, then you’ll know the phenomenon. You may not know it as a name — metamerism. It’s the variability of the same colour under different lighting conditions, because what we see in print is not the colour of the pigments but the colour of the light reflected from them. Pantone has a brilliantly simple sticker sheet with a solid beige/brown hue that dramatically changes colour in front of your eyes as you move from one light source to another. It’s probably the easiest way of describing what happens as light values change, and to anyone who isn’t an experienced printer, it does look like a magic trick. The effect also explains why colours appear to be different on a variety of media like matt or gloss as the reflectivity of the surface, dictates how much colour is reflected back to the eye. It’s particularly important to advise customers on this as many designers, as well as photographers, who work entirely on screen, may not be aware of how much difference it will make. A corporate logo created for a website, for example, may look a very different colour on a glossy poster, as opposed to a matt laminated business card. It’s all a matter of experience to a printer, but for anyone, without print history, it’s potentially a steep learning curve, And of course, I haven’t even begun to talk about RGB and CMYK yet. I will go into that can of worms in more detail next month, but the two are an essential part of the conundrum as everything seen on screen is basically RGB and everything printed is basically CMYK. The difference between the two is that one is additive, and one is subtractive. That’s the technical description. What it means is that RGB adds together the colours of red, green and blue in proportions to make all the colours of the spectrum up to pure white visible light. In RGB black is the very absence of light, so that in that colour space it isn’t literally a colour. RGB colours are also very dark, as they are designed to be illuminated. CMYK colours are completely the opposite as they start with white, or whatever base colour the print media is, and remove that colour by adding pigments of a combination of Cyan, Magenta and Yellow. These pigments are by their nature paler than RGB colours and to add density have a fourth key element Black (K). In order to make a very solid black and thereby remove any trace of the base colour, CMYK needs a combination of all the four colour inks; otherwise, it will still look a little grey. The mixing of inks has become a more precise science than it used to be and digital printing has certainly raised the game of what can be achieved in colour, but with the acceptance that it can’t reproduce all the colours that can be seen by the eye. How close we can get, I will talk about next time. 15

FB750 FLATBED CUTTER UPGRADE
Intec, who recently refreshed their range of flatbed cutters, further improves the FB750 model by now offering it with CCD Camera for QR Code reading for instant job recognition.
T
he new FB750 flatbeds will offer a much improved user experience with an upgraded registration system to include QR Code reading and 7th generation Vision3 ARMS sensing, providing faster job retrieval and 300% faster job registration. Aimed at light production applications and producers wanting to handle a more diverse range of media for varied applications, the FB750 offers an unparalleled production capability with its new CCD video camera. A printed QR code and page registration SmartMarks are read at lightning speeds for the instant retrieval of the associated cut file providing perfect cut registration. The cutting table can handle sheet sizes of B2 and larger and with the ability to place two SRA3 sheets next to each other or four SRA4, the flatbed offers a wide use for paper, boards, synthetic materials, vinyl decals and kiss cut
materials from 0.5mm to 1200 micron. With no costly dies or setup charges users can cut any shape in an instant! An SRA3 takes between 30-40 seconds per sheet to cut
and crease, depending on job complexity with cutting and creasing generated via a multi-tool holder with interchangeable tools. Up to 1kg of pressure can be applied to the individual tools with the flatbed supporting the immediate finishing of packaging, POS, prototypes and kiss-cut labels! Terri Winstanley, product and marketing manager states; “With this further development and being able to handle sheet sizes up to B2 and larger, the FB750 enables users to achieve higher productivity with less time taken reading sheets. And with its incredibly aggressive price point we are confident that the FB750 will continue to be an extremely popular model within the extensive ColorCut flatbed range”. Designed to use minimal floor space, the FB750 can easily be accommodated in any print shop. www.intecprinters.com
PROTOTYPING WITH INTEC’S COLORCUT FB8000 AND COLORFLARE CF1200LX Whitebox Studios Ltd. is a full service design and marketing agency, who specialise in creative design solutions for many industry sectors. Having a wide range of blue chip customers, Whitebox has continually striven to deliver a premium service, from conceptual idea to finished product. With this in mind it was suggested they might be interested in supplementing their digital print facility with additional finishing equipment such as foiling, lamination and digital cutting… Whitebox managing director, Paul Stephenson, welcomed the idea and took a demo of the proposed kit — placing an order for a ColorFlare CF1200LX laminator/foiler and a ColorCut FB8000PRO auto sheet feeding digital flatbed cutter. Having now had their new ColorFlare and ColorCut devices installed, Whitebox is beginning to realise the extent of their newly enhanced production capability. Intec has been advised that the Kingston upon Hull design studio is already enjoying seeing the stunning effects being output on the ColorFlare. They will be putting this to good effect on their book jacket work, as well as packaging visuals and prototypes, corporate print and premium stationery work. Whitebox also has big plans for
20
their ColorCut FB8000PRO automated sheet feeding flatbed cutter — beyond their initial requirements One such aspect will be the production of folders to contain the part work magazine series which they regularly publish. Another job on the agenda will be for a customer who requires rounded corner business cards - a dozen sheets of SRA3 with 21 up cards on, will fly through the FB8000 and deliver 250 cards cut — without their usual need to send out for costly cutting dies. Other applications are also suggesting themselves as they become familiar with the machine, which they know will suit their customer base, thus expanding the services they can offer in-house and greatly
minimising their out sourced production costs. Paul Stephenson of Whitebox Studios said, “I was very impressed with the potential these devices offered. At Whitebox, we like to produce pre-production prototypes as closely to the finished items as we possibly can. With the Intec ColorFlare foiler/laminator, we will be able to embellish printed sheets with coloured metallic foiling and laminate those sheets to resemble exactly how they will look and feel when they come off the final print production line. Furthermore, the ColorCut FB8000 will enable us to digitally cut and crease the sheets to the precise cutter guides that will be used on the final approved items. This means we can produce a single prototype or even a whole batch of samples, quickly and on-demand — and with the confidence that they will resemble exactly the final job.” www.intecprinters.com www.whiteboxstudios.co.uk

BOOKLET MAKER
MORGANA
SCHOOL BOOKS
Renfrewshire–based HDC (Homework Diary Company) has announced its third installation of a PowerSquare™ 224 booklet maker. This latest machine is an offline Morgana PowerSquare™ 224VF, complete with high capacity dual bin feeder. The machine was sold by Canon UK, an authorised dealer of Morgana offline and Plockmatic inline finishing units.
H
DC produce a wide and versatile range of high quality printed book products for the educational market. These include both student and teacher planners, personalised exercise books, and primary and secondary yearbooks. The first of the finishing machines installed at HDC was a Watkiss branded hand fed offline unit some five years ago; the second, two years ago, was installed by Canon in an inline configuration, integrated with a VP6250 digital printing machine. This third unit, now branded Morgana, is again offline but with its own high capacity feeder. Commenting on the latest addition, Robin Clark, Managing Director at HDC, said: “Whilst the inline unit has been a great success, the latest Morgana PowerSquare 224 with the VF feeder can be much more efficient and more versatile in an offline configuration, where it can handle the output from two or three of our mono and colour Canon presses. This will allow us as a business to be much more productive — which can be critical for our especially busy periods, such as before the start of the new school year.” The PowerSquare™ 224VF booklet maker, with its high capacity dual bin feeder, offers a flexible solution for a wide range of booklet types and sizes. The system is fed by the VF vacuum assisted feeder which has a loading capacity of up to 540mm/21”, giving long uninterrupted production runs. Pre-collated printed sets can be placed into both bins for longer runs, or covers can be placed into one of the bins when they need to be merged with collated sets. The feeder can also be loaded on the run with automatic bin switching. Optional barcode readers can be fitted to the VF for variable page count jobs or to ensure set integrity. In a single machine the PowerSquare 224 combines the four processes of stitching, folding, spine forming, and trimming, to produce SquareBack™ books of up to 224 pages thick. Commenting further, Robin Clark added, “We know the robustness of the unit and could appreciate the productivity of having it installed as an offline system, so we didn’t need to look anywhere else before we made our choice. “Canon has been our supplier of choice for many years, so it was easy to deal with them regarding the latest order. The machine build 24
of the finishing units has been excellent. The reliability of the finishing products has been exceptional, and the unique square-back finish that they produce really helps our products to stand out.” Another of the unique feature of the PowerSquare 224 is that is can add up to six
staples in one printed set, meaning that smaller format products can be printed and finished two or three up, increasing productivity significantly. The proven SquareBack process produces a superior quality of finish, delivering professionally finished booklets. www.hdc-uk.com/hdc • www.morgana.co.uk

MORRISONS CONSIDER REMOVING PLASTIC BAGS The supermarket chain Morrisons has launched a “paper bag only” trial in eight stores. If successful, the chain will consider removing plastic bags from all stores and will offer paper bags only. Morrisons started to give their customers the choice between paper and plastic bags earlier this year when they introduced reusable paper bags into their stores at a 20p charge (the same price as a plastic “bag for life”). However, since they have seen little evidence to suggest that the plastic bags are being re-used and therefore, continue to have a negative impact on the environment, they are considering ditching them altogether. Andy Atkinson, Group Customer and Marketing Director, at Morrisons said: “We are taking another meaningful step that will remove an estimated 1,300 tonnes of plastic out of the environment each year. Our customers have told us that reducing plastic is their number one environmental concern so introducing the paper bag across the nation will provide another way of reducing the plastic in their lives.” Are paper bags more environmentally friendly? Paper bags, because of their natural and renewable attributes, present an attractive and practical alternative. Studies show that they can be the natural and environmental alternative to plastic and textile bags. The raw material for paper bags, wood, is a renewable and sustainable resource. Between 2005 and 2015, European forests grew by an area the size of Switzerland, the equivalent of 1,500 football pitches every day. Additionally, the recycling rate for paper and cardboard packaging in the EU is 85%. Even if a paper bag is irresponsibly discarded, due to its natural compostable characteristics it will have a relatively low impact. Are paper bags as strong as plastic bags? You’d be forgiven for thinking that a paper bag may not be up to the task for carrying the weekly shop, particularly when it is being re-used regularly. But, paper bags can be very robust. Morrisons, who source the paper for their bags from sustainably managed forests, say they are strong enough to carry up to 16kg, equivalent to 13 bottles of wine or 16 bags of sugar. This is a similar performance to its plastic bag alternative. Kraft paper, typically used to make paper bags, is specially developed for demanding packaging. Due to its long and strong virgin fibres, it has a high level of mechanical strength. The choice of glue and a proficient construction of the handles add even more to the bag’s strength and durability. www.twosides.info

IDENTITY PRINTING LAUNCHES URBAN FASHION BRAND Together with a design duo from Liverpool, personalised print specialist Identity Printing has launched a new luxury streetwear line using Ricoh direct-to-garment (DTG) technology. Manchester based Identity Printing, led by Managing Director Leo Stanley, is an innovator of exciting printing techniques and applications with an extensive range of customisable clothing, giftware and corporate gifts. The company was an early adopter of DTG garment printing, which enables unique designs to be printed directly to T-shirts, sweatshirts and other products at high speeds and low set-up costs. However, competition from start-ups was squeezing prices and Identity Printing considered leaving the fashion market — until it was approached by high end brand MisRep. Instead of simply taking on the printing contract, Identity Printing invested in the fashion brand and now owns a 50 per cent share. “When MisRep came to us we were initially sceptical,” says Zahid Ali, Production Manager, Identity Printing. “What we didn’t realise was that one of the guys is a design genius and the other a social media expert. Together we’ve created a high end fashion brand that has achieved an amazing turnover and a social media buzz, including 43,000
followers on Instagram.” Identity Printing’s continual pursuit of better, more innovative technology is a large part of that success. Around twelve months ago the business updated its print room to include a Ricoh Ri 6000 and, six months ago, two Ricoh Ri 1000 DTG printers from supplier Resolute DTG. These professional, high
speed printing solutions are easy to use and to maintain, with reliably outstanding colour quality. The eco-friendly inks include white, perfect for printing a base layer on dark fabrics to ensure vibrant colours. Under its Green Button System, Resolute DTG uses its own RIP technology to offer streamlined connectivity and enhanced productivity, with built-in workflow and custom colour calibrations. Additionally, using the RIP’s in-built remote login and custom augmented reality (AR) software for support, Resolute DTG can have a technician’s eyes virtually on site within minutes of any support call. For some MisRep ranges, Identity Printing has also created some spectacular designs by combining DTG printing with vinyl; ‘Looking Glass’ T-shirts, for example, feature a reflective mirrored panel. Every piece is printed on demand — T-shirts on the two Ricoh Ri 1000 printers and sweatshirts on the larger bed of the Ri 6000 — and shipped directly to the customer within three to five days. Zahid Ali says this is possible thanks to the reliability of the Ricoh devices. “We’re going steady at the moment, not chasing business, and looking ahead to a busy Christmas on the Ricoh DTG printers,” he says. www.resoluteink.co.uk • www.ricoh.co.uk
WHY SPECIALIST PRODUCTS PAY OFF A multi-purpose graphics film could seem like a good deal, but you may end up spending more money and time than you bargained for. Jerry Hill from Drytac explains why. The term ‘multi-purpose’ sounds great. One product for different applications, helping your business keep costs low and stock keeping units simple — what’s not to like? However, in reality, that smart multi-functional product will be better for some jobs than others, in terms of appearance, performance, cost efficiency and longevity. This might seem like an acceptable balance, but some products claiming to be effective across multiple applications might do well for some jobs but perform downright poorly for others. This is especially important when choosing graphics media. The type of product, and particularly its adhesive element, should be dictated by the application’s environment and required longevity. A multi-use product might perform well for a few weeks but may cause problems if left in place for months, after which the adhesive will fail. In the case of floor graphics, curling edges would pose a safety risk aside from looking unsightly. Conversely, the product may be designed for long-term or permanent use when the application is short-term. If so, you will spend more time and money removing it than you expected.
28
Naturally, the cost to your business — in money and time — is the big factor. Nobody likes paying more or taking longer to get results. It’s therefore understandable to look at the price and ease of use of graphics media developed for indoor applications and hope it will work just as well for outdoor graphics, for example. However, in this case, the indoor product will lack the weatherproof adhesives specifically engineered for exterior use, meaning it may simply fail. A specialist outdoor product would cost more but will offer peace of mind that results will last. Again, the reverse can be true: one product could be priced correctly for floors and the specialist adhesive this application requires but overpriced for walls where this adhesive would be too aggressive. Indeed, even for indoor applications, the
product must be compatible with the intended surface. In addition to remaining safely in place, it should be cleanly and easily removed at the end of the project. Products that are designed for high-tack applications such as brick can also work on windows, but be aware: apply it to drywall or plasterboard and it may never come off without pulling the wall surface away with it. Alongside its suitability to do a job, consider the aesthetics of the product. There is a fantastic variety of textures and finishes available for graphics — why restrict yourself to a matte finish when you could choose glossy, or even sand, linen, canvas or woodgrain effect? If you’re still leaning towards a product marketed as multi-purpose, consider a loaf of sliced bread. Perfect for toast in the morning, but how about as a hot dog bun? You could use it, but why would you want to? It completely changes the experience. That sliced loaf might be ideal for the kids’ packed lunches, but would you serve it at a dinner party? What if you or your guests have a gluten intolerance, or you simply want to serve something more special with your soup? One product might seem to tick all the boxes, but in reality it needs more thought. For a graphics application, just like in a bakery, the best thing since sliced bread might be a lot more sophisticated. www.drytac.com

NEW PROFIT CENTRE
THE FUTURE OF BOOK PRODUCTION FROM PADSTOW
The Cornwall based printing company, formerly known as TJ International, has announced a dynamic, future facing rebrand of the business which now will be known as TJ Books. This comes alongside significant financial investment in new processes and equipment. Based just outside of Padstow, close to the Cornish coast, TJ Books is one of the UK’s largest independent manufacturers of quality books, producing on average 1000 titles a month. The £1.5million plus investment strategy is focused on both improvements in efficiency and providing publishers with a wide range of options for their book production requirements. The drive towards higher production values, smaller inventory, and reduction of publisher risk, along with the environmental advantages of producing onshore, are at the heart of the strategy. The new system upgrade, which includes the latest iX30200 HD inkjet press from Canon, complements two existing continuous fed Inkjet presses, which now flow into a fully automated finishing line providing a completed book within hours. In addition, five colour toner and cover embellishments for short run lengths have been added. The investment increases capacity and combines the workflows for short-run digital and print-on-demand production. TJ Books are also introducing a new Management Information System which will go live at the end of the year. This will streamline the front end of the business, giving customers greater visibility and live information about their orders. The company was founded in 1969 and underwent a management buyout led by Andy Watts in 2018. Since then it has gone through a series of structural changes to ensure a thriving business despite the big uncertainties of Brexit and Covid-19. TJ Books is today led by Andy Watts, Managing Director, Andy Adams, Finance Director, and Andy Vosper, Sales Director. Andy Watts, Managing Director, said: “These past two years have been an important time to ensure we have laid key infrastructure to support the strategy. Our decision to buy this business and then relaunch as TJ Books, was borne
from a desire to offer an innovative and refreshing approach to the market. Our new brand represents the Company that we are today and what we are experts at – books. Our new fresh, dynamic and modern website not only showcases what we do here in Cornwall, it also portrays our unique personality within the trade and the personality of the people in our eclectic team here at TJ Books.” Andy Adams, TJ Books’ Finance Director, said: “I don’t think there’s a company out there who hasn’t felt the effects of the recent industry challenges and this year’s pandemic. However, we’re excited about the prospect of looking beyond the now, and are taking the lead with our pioneering attitude towards the future of print. The art of bookbinding is a noble, longstanding profession and together with our team, we’re passionate about innovation, effectiveness and are constantly on the front-foot of the future with our new brand, and new capabilities.” TJ Books employs more than 120 people and is a valuable contributor to the local economy. The new digital finishing system is now in use, further details can be seen on the website. The company’s brand new website can be viewed at www.tjbooks.co.uk

THE JOKE’S ON YOU
READERS’ SCRIBES
SOMETHING TO SHARE? BAD SHOULDER
RING, RING.
A CAT AND A LEMON
ROMAN NUMERALS
A guy goes to see the doctor for his aching shoulder problem. The doctor said, “Okay, it is a bit inflamed. What I want you to do is put a bag of frozen peas on it, on and off for a week.” “The peas will work?” the guy asked. The doctor replies, “Yes, just give peas a chance.”
What do you get when you cross a cat with a lemon? A sourpuss.
GUILTY COAT DECISION
A man is on trial for stealing an overcoat. The judge went straight to the point. “Did you steal this man’s overcoat?” he demanded. “No sir,” the defendant replied, with a grin. “I was just playing joke on him.” “And where did you take the coat?” asked the judge. “I removed it from the coat rack in the restaurant and carried it home with me.” “Guilty,” snapped the judge. “Guilty! Guilty of what?” asked the defendant. “Guilty of carrying a joke too far!”
NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH
“You seem to have more than the average share of intelligence for a man of your background,” sneered the lawyer at a witness on the stand. “If I wasn’t under oath, I’d return the compliment,” replied the witness.
CIRCUS ACT
A man decides to join the circus. He shows up to demonstrate his skills to the impresario. “I have the most unusual act,” he announces. “I’m sure it will amaze you.” He climbs up to the high wire and jumps off! He flaps his arms wildly, and finally his fall slows and the man begins to fly. He soars upward, turns, and swoops back again. Finally, he stops in mid air and gently lowers himself to the ground. The impresario says, “Is that all you’ve got? Bird impressions?”
Me: What happened to you? You don’t look so good.
Man on phone: Hello, young man, could I speak to your mother or father? Little Johnny: My parents aren’t home. Man on phone: Could I leave them a message? Little Johnny: Sorry, we don’t have an answering machine.
One of my sales friends asked the sales team for advice on organising his sales plan for the year. “Why don’t you use Roman numerals to head the different sections?” another friend suggested. “I thought of that,” he replied. “But my keyboard doesn’t have Roman numerals on it.”
FAMILY DECISION
One day, after a man had his annual physical, the doctor came out and said, “You had a great check up. Is there anything that you’d like to talk about or ask me?” “Well,” he said, “I was thinking about getting a vasectomy.” “That’s a pretty big decision. Have you talked it over with your family?” “Yeah, and they’re in favour 12 to 1.”
GRANDDAUGHTER’S SUPER POWER
My wife said that my granddaughter has me wrapped around her little finger. I said, “That’s not true. I said ‘no’ to her just yesterday.” “What did she ask you?” “She asked me if there was anything I wouldn’t give her.”
RIGHT DIRECTION
“Yoda, are you sure we’re headed in the right direction?”
THE DOORBELL RANG
The doorbell rang and there was a little kid dressed as Gloria Gaynor. At first I was afraid, then I was petrified!
Friend: I got stung by a brose.
MANAGEMENT COURSE
An eagle was sitting on a tree resting, doing nothing. A small rabbit saw the eagle and asked him, “Can I also sit like you and do nothing?” The eagle answered, “Sure, why not.” So the rabbit sat on the ground below the eagle and rested. All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it. Moral of the story: To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very, very high up.
MCDONALD’S BOSS
What do you call the boss at Old McDonald’s Farm? The CIEIO!
AN ENGLISH LESSON
As Lawyers are disbarred and clergymen defrocked, does it then follow that electricians can be delighted, musicians denoted, cowboys deranged, models deposed, tree surgeons debarked, and dry cleaners depressed?
NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH
“You seem to have more than the average share of intelligence for a man of your background,” sneered the lawyer at a witness on the stand. “If I wasn’t under oath, I’d return the compliment,” replied the witness.
ONE UP MAN SHIP
Electile disfunction is the ability to watch a political campaign and not be aroused!
Me: There’s no b in rose.
Friend: There was in this one!
