YOUR PRINT INSTITUTE IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS With opening postponed by the pandemic, Your Print Specialists has announced that Your Print Institute (YPI) is now open for in person courses. Those looking to further their skills in digital print are invited to book a place on one of two available courses; Introduction to Dye Sublimation and Introduction to Mimaki Wide Format. Introduction to Dye Sublimation is ideal for those looking to enter the dye sublimation product market. Using the latest Epson Dye Sublimation printers, each student will learn the process of sublimation print from design to print and press, taking home a selection of personalised samples. Introduction to Mimaki Wide Format, taught by YPS Technical Director Paul Shorton, offers a comprehensive overview of Mimaki Print and Cut from designing for print to machine maintenance. Paul Shorton explains, “Our Introduction to Mimaki Wide Format course is a great way to get hands on with a Mimaki print and cut machine. The course covers the basics from artwork creation to using RIP software and machine maintenance. We’ve aimed the course for people entering the print industry but it can also be utilised by PSPs looking to train new print operators.” Each course will allow the students to answer questions and get hands on with the digital print equipment. Georgia Brown, Managing Director adds, “We want to make sure our new students have the confidence to print and produce their own products
and have all the associated skills required to help ensure they are successful and profitable. We want to help people enhance their business with new skill sets, create new revenue streams, start a new business and gain portable skills.” In order to keep the classes as safe as possible, YPI will have a limit on the number of attendees
MACROART REPORTS RECORD GROWTH Innovative large format printer, MacroArt has reported its busiest month since the start of the pandemic with the return of live events, exhibitions and conferences and expansion into new sectors driving the growth in sales, resulting in the recruitment of six new staff. Turnover for July exceeded £750,000, with this figure representing both a healthy recovery from pandemic restricted times in its traditionally strong sector of exhibitions and events, together with a highly successful diversification into markets such as heritage and museums, sports stadia, retail and corporate projects. With the Covid lockdown effectively shutting down MacroArt’s core exhibition business overnight, the management team used this hiatus as a positive opportunity to investigate and develop other sectors. The firm’s many transferrable skills were key to developing several other new markets, providing additional revenue streams which have remained strong even with the return of their traditional markets. This expansion has seen a requirement from MacroArt to invest in greater staffing levels, and 2021 has already seen a further six employees join the team across all departments, from sales and marketing, to design and production, with more appointments planned. Managing director, Michael Green (pictured), sees this expansion and growth as both sustainable and permanent; “If the pandemic has taught us anything, it is that, for our business to survive and thrive, we must continue to evolve as a business, and the recent appointment of our new non-executive chairman, Dominic Riley, has helped us to see the wider picture regarding our capabilities. We are excited by the future of MacroArt and keen to see where else our business can grow.” www.macroart.co.uk

as well as ensuring that levels of sanitisation and hygiene remain high. Social distancing will remain in place with students encouraged to wear facemasks. Courses are now available to book through the YPI website with further courses to be added soon: www.yourprintinstitute.co.uk

DS GROUP EXPANDS FINISHING WITH HORIZON BQ-160 Celebrating its 20th year in business, the Clacton-on-Sea operation delivers design, print, direct mail and media publishing services to a wide range of customers from small, local businesses to blue chips, banks and household names. Managing Director Allistair Hunter explains: “We were sending our perfect binding work out but the businesses we were using either closed or stopped offering the service. We wanted to be able to continue to respond to customer demand so decided to bring the process in house. We are also looking to offer a trade service.” The investment is the first Horizon solution for The DS Group and the decision was made after seeing it in operation. Says Hunter: “We visited an IFS customer that was using the system in exactly the same way we wanted to. We were immediately sold and bought it there and then. The IFS team was very supportive and helpful and that enabled us to be confident in the decision. We also know we can call on them should we need any further assistance.” He continues: “We liked the Horizon BQ-160 because it is a good quality system that was easy to set up and run. Horizon has a good name. We have always chosen solutions that are the right fit for our business, and this was perfect. We liked the fact we can quickly jump on it as and when we need to. The finish is good too which was very important.” The Horizon BQ-160 can produce strong, high quality perfect bound books up to 1.6” thick at speeds up to 180 cycles per hour. Its dynamic colour touchscreen allows the operator to easily adjust a range of settings including cover alignment with the spine, nipping pressure, clamping pressure and much more. Other features include energy save and auto-off functions, the ability to notch in one or both directions, and an optional carbon
air filtration system to reduce adhesive odours. The DS Group’s system is being run in line with the Horizon CRB-160 Cover Creaser. Following its installation Hunter says: “It is very easy to use and we are confident in its ability to enable us to offer a consistently high quality finish. We see a lot of potential for growth. We are looking forward to promoting perfect binding as a trade service which will help us achieve our goal of an 18 month return on investment.” www.ifsl.uk.com
UK SMEs BECOMING MORE POSITIVE As more certainty has returned, the UK’s SMEs are a great deal more positive about both their own prospects and those of the broader UK economy than they were only 12 months ago, according to the latest data* from Close Brothers Asset Finance. This is despite ongoing concerns over Brexit and the skills shortages affecting many sectors. Two thirds of the 900 respondents are either ‘far more’ (27.7%) or ‘marginally’ (38.6%) more positive than they were 12 months ago, while 24% are ‘the same’, while only 9.8% are less optimistic. Growth expectations for the final months of 2021, too, were high, with 21% predicting strong performances and 37.4% expecting moderate increases. A third expect to continue to trade at current levels with the remaining firms anticipating some level of contraction. Investing to stimulate growth was also a key topic — 30.4% say they will be investing heavily in the year ahead; 37.3% in a ‘limited’ way, and 32.2% will not be investing at all. In terms of the macro economic recovery, business owners are cautious about predicting how long it will take for the economy to return to prepandemic levels, with one in five of the opinion it’ll take longer than two years; other responses include: 6-12 months, 16.60%; 13-18 months, 32.30%; 19-24 months, 24.60%; and more than two years, 21.70%. “The data from our latest research again demonstrates the resilience of the UK’s SMEs, who have remained largely positive in the face of generational challenges” said Neil Davies, CEO, of Close Brothers’ Commercial division (pictured) “That being said, there are clearly challenges now and ahead that are going to have to be faced, including HGV driver shortages, material availability, price rises, supply chain issues and labour shortages, to name just some. “Our findings tell us that – overall – around a third of firms we polled

contracted during the pandemic, but this doesn’t tell the full picture; for example, in food and drink this figure rises to nearly 50%, while in services it’s 42%, and it’s these firms and the people who work for them who will be needing ongoing assistance during the recovery.” For detailed results please contact Anton Nebbe, Head of PR and Communications, 07736 286 144, anton.nebbe@closebrothers.com * All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from a Kantar survey conducted in August / September 2021. The survey canvassed the opinion of over 900 SME owners across the UK and Ireland and across several industries on a range of issues affecting their businesses.

DEFINING A VIBRANT FUTURE WITH RESIN INKS Phil McMullin, Sales Manager, ProGraphics, Epson (UK) explains how resin ink is putting its stamp on the print production sector thanks to its ability to meet demand for quality, productivity, reliability, stable colour performance and environmentally friendly output. It is these abilities and the fact resin ink delivers outstandingly vibrant, consistent colour, even on the new breed of heat sensitive media that is driving its expected CAGR of 4.78% to US$ 4.4bn by 2025. There are other performance benefits print service providers can enjoy too. They include: Productivity — Quick drying, with impressive levels of scratch resistance, resin ink enables users to laminate instantly for fast turnaround and same day delivery on high priority jobs such as vehicle graphics. Uptime is kept to a maximum and running costs reduced with a bulk ink solution and a hot swap function. Sustainability — Completely water based and with a significantly lower curing temperature, the ink offers sustainable solutions to customers and brands. Their eco-friendly and odourless prints can be used in sensitive environments such as schools and hospitals. In addition, printed output on non-PVC media can be fully recycled. Image Quality — The ink supports high image quality and repeatable colour. Both are achieved by Epson’s unique three stage curing process, long life printhead, repeat accuracy of dot placements and consistent droplet size, job after job. Reduced graininess and banding is made possible by half toning, fully optimised look up table and Micro Weave — known collectively as Precision Dot Technology, which has been developed over many years. Application Variety — It is suitable for printing traditional signage applications including vinyl and banner, decor medias, as well as a broader range of substrates like uncoated papers, wallpapers and textiles. The wide substrate possibilities support signage and pro-graphics printers, design agencies and wallpaper, canvas, and photo production plants. Instant lamination and high scratch resistance, for example, lends itself to both the
vehicle livery market for fast turnaround and application, and the POS market where users may want to avoid laminating to reduce costs. Epson’s UltraChrome RS resin ink, works with the SureColor SC-R Series of wide format printers. It was developed in tandem with Epson’s renowned print head expertise to deliver elevated levels of print performance, colour reliability and an expanded choice of applications, all from a water based ink. The six colour ink set comprises of CMYK plus light cyan and light magenta to reduce graininess. In addition, an ink optimiser provides enhancement to the already vibrant inks, delivering image quality well beyond that seen in other brands of resin ink. MORGANA DOCUBIND PRO VFX Morgana has announced the release of the Morgana DocuBind Pro VFX – an innovative solution for the popular twin loop wire style of binding. Mechanical twin loop wire binding is a hugely popular method for assembling a document where there is a need for a book to lay completely flat, often for pages to be written on. This method is widely used in education and training materials, as well as notebooks and calendar production, where customers are more demanding than ever, and often there is a demand for the fast turnaround of the work. Traditional methods of twin wire binding often involve slow and labour intensive hand fed solutions. The key elements of the DocuBind Pro VFX are the high speed Morgana VFX vacuum feeder, running at up to 140 pages per minute, the StreamPunch VFX heavy duty punching and creasing module, and the innovative eWire VFX twin wire automatic binding solution, which is engineered by GBC. With its small footprint and wide range of easy to use features, the DocuBind Pro VFX will improve workflow and reduce labour costs for a great deal of mechanical binding work. Commenting on the introduction of the DocuBind
VFX, Ray Hillhouse, VP Sales & Marketing for the Plockmatic Group Offline Business Unit, said: “This newly created, fully automated solution provides for significantly greater productivity versus manual production, and greater flexibility when compared to complex inline solutions. We see a sizeable gap in the market for such a compact, free-standing unit.” Morgana VFX Vacuum Feeder — The Morgana VFX Vacuum Feeder is the latest twin tray feeder platform from Plockmatic Group. The dual design focus for the Morgana VFX increased ease of use for the operator and enhanced feed reliability. It includes numerous patent pending technologies that have been
developed to minimise operator set-up time and reduce the requirements for exclusively trained operators. The feeder can hold up to 5,400 sheets. It can handle paper weights from 75gsm through to 300gsm, including coated stock. StreamPunch — VFX The StreamPunch VFX is a fully automatic hole punching unit which utilises a wide range of die-sets for multiple hole types, including wire binding, coil binding, plastic comb binding, or even for the basic creasing of printed sheets. Pages can be punched to be automatically bound in the eWire system or can bypass the eWire to exit onto a delivery tray for other applications. The dies are heavily engineered for long life and durability. Sheets up to SRA3 can be punched in stock weights of up to 300gsm. eWire VFX — The eWire VFX completes the binding process. Wire from spools is fed from inside the main cabinet of the machine, cut to the required length, closed automatically, and the finished book then delivered into a catch stacker. Wire is available in six different spool sizes for documents up to 10mm thick, or approximately 100 pages. Wire is available in white, black or silver to match the desired finish of the document. www.morgana.co.uk

The AeroCut X is the ideal solution for finishing especially short run digitally printed applications, such as business cards, where it can produce up to 10,800 full bleed standard business cards per hour, in addition to post cards, invitations, greetings cards, leaflets, tickets and more. AeroCut X has an innovative patented feeding mechanism that drastically reduces the risk of double feeds and mis-feeds, providing for greater productivity and accuracy every time. The machine features two single blade slitters to trim top and bottom margins of the sheet, and two double blade slitters for bleed centre gutters. Trimmed stock is then deflected into a waste bin. The durable self sharpening slitter and guillotine can cut stocks measuring up to 370 x 750mm, in weights of up to 400gsm. The air-suction top fed system transports stock precisely, feeding one by one from the top of the feed tray. AeroCut X has detachable rollers, making cleaning and maintenance simple and straightforward. The AeroCut X can also be fitted with Barcode Reading to further automate production. The Barcodes can be generated during the imposition process
which will automatically call up the correct cutting pattern in the machine. The AeroCut X Pro is fully loaded with perforation in both directions, strike perforation and the Barcode reader fitted as standard to tackle more complex applications. Both machines can be supplied with a bespoke imposition package which has pre-set templates to match the most common jobs. Additionally, the barcodes and registration marks can be applied using a Fiery Impose software. Hillhouse added: “Uchida has also improved the waste management by including an ioniser in the guillotine area to help the cut pieces drop and added an optional waste conveyor for those producing longer runs or longer sheets” Both the AeroCut X and X Pro will be shown at the Print ‘n’ Finish Event being held in the Morgana showroom in Milton Keynes, September 14th to 16th, along with a wide range of other finishing devices. www.plockmaticgroup.com
TAILOR-MADE FINISHING: FOLD, BAG, AND LABEL Dunstable based branded clothing provider Essential Embroidery Design has significantly improved its efficiency after purchasing three new pieces of finishing kit from Friedheim International. The company works with a wide range of customers across its Essential Embroidery Design and Essential division, providing a wide range of clothing decoration services including embroidery, screen print and transfer print. To complement this offering, Essential was seeking new machinery to improve the efficiency of its packing department as it went in search of further growth. This was focused around a solution that could fold, bag and label clothing products from its production line. Essential approached finishing solutions leader Friedheim International for support with the investment project, opting for a Beck Serienpacker S2050XJ Bagging Machine, Texfinity S.OMNI.A Garment Folding Machine and Weber Legi-Air 2050 Print and Apply Labeller Station. Essential’s Operations Director Louis Georgiou said, “We wanted a solution that could fold, bag, and label as a one man operation. Using these three units together we were able to achieve that. The investment has really helped us to be more efficient by reducing the labour hours needed in our packing department, which will now allow us to pursue new work and grow our business as a result.” Georgiou added that by reducing labour hours in packing, this will free up staff to work on other projects, which will in turn support its long term growth strategy. www.friedheim.co.uk

COUNTER-CULTURE — BACK TO REALITY
It seems that we are, one way or another, getting ‘back to normal’, whatever that is. Reading and hearing so, Martin Christie seemed to remember that just a few years ago, when things were apparently ‘normal’, it wasn’t great on the high street back then.
H
ousehold names were falling like dominoes with changing habits to personal delivery rather than personal shopping; the process accelerated because fewer shops meant fewer reasons to go to the high street and spend some time there. Then there was a greater awareness of global warming when the economics of importing cheaper goods from the other side of the world started to look less palatable. Then there was Brexit when a trade deal with an island in the Pacific Ocean was apparently more important than one with a country 25 miles away across the channel. And then finally there was the pandemic when it was decided we better not do anything but stay at home. No wonder people were confused with so many mixed messages. The one thing that Covid did prove is that if you didn’t fly anywhere or drive anywhere, then that would be really good for the environment. It might actually start to recover from all the abuse we have been dishing out to it for several industrial centuries. But, unfortunately, we can’t survive in little isolated bubbles for more than a short while. We need supplies of food and services, and we need to work in order to pay for them. But to me, it’s almost like the lid has been lifted off the pressure cooker too soon, not specifically in medical terms, but as much as the lessons of the last months socially and economically has been squandered. The beautiful clear blue skies of 2020 now have the crisscross vapour trails of jets taking holidaymakers to their favourite destinations, trains and buses are busy, and the roads are no longer safe for hedgehogs. It’s almost hard to remember there was a time when we worried about going out more than once a day or being spotted returning without a bag of essential goods. There was a hope that the enforced discipline might encourage a more patient, less selfish society. Having to wait and queue for things instead of expecting them provided in an instant might calm the clamour of daily life. However, I fear that hope may have been in vain or at least passed many people by as they seem to have slipped back into their old ways all too easily. I always like to share an experience from the counter of print-on-demand if only to reassure regular readers they are not the only ones suffering, or sometimes warn them to expect it. Once upon a time, the pre-open routine involved starting computers and printers and checking they were all talking to each other. Now it also means wiping surfaces, checking sanitiser and general housekeeping and anything that interrupts the routine is unwelcome. So a customer you’ve never seen before rattling the door ten minutes before opening leaves the dilemma — ignore or indulge. Experience tells you to ignore, but your better nature prompts you to do something you know you will probably regret. 14
“…do you want it done quickly, done cheaply, or done well? You can have any two, but not all three. It’s an enquiry about an urgent print job, but several items and lots of questions, all of which need careful thought before they can be answered, and not something you can resolve on the spot. In fact, it’s the familiar Catch 22 — until you see the artwork, you don’t know if you can print it or how long it will take, let alone how much it will cost, so it’s no good the customer coming up with “hypothetically if we get it to you by…” we don’t do ‘hypothetical’. I’ve never yet met a designer who completely understood the meaning of the word ‘deadline’; that is, beyond that line. It doesn’t happen. The fact that they are still working on it doesn’t instil much confidence. The claim that the urgency is because they have been ‘let down by another printer’ doesn’t stand much scrutiny if they don’t have the job ready for print. Moving the goalposts is one of those tricks you get used to anticipating in print-ondemand when they are doing the demanding, and you are doing the printing. It’s also familiar to the bomber pilots in the novel Catch 22 as mission creep where the original target is lost sight of, but the whole thing gets pushed ahead anyway. You know it will be a disaster; just walk away if you can. Having survived difficult times, it’s all too easy to try and take on everything that comes your way, but there are occasions when you have to see a plane crash coming and avoid it, even if others don’t see it. Unfortunately, the warning signs are mostly in what the customer isn’t telling you rather than what they are! Taking a customer’s word with the proverbial pinch of salt is an essential requirement for the job. It’s not that they are intentionally lying, just composing truths with too few facts to back them up. It’s like when they tell you their friend is a very good designer might simply mean they did a lovely job of a Christmas card a few years back. Being able to drop a few things into an online template or master a Publisher preset does not make you a designer or your work print-ready. This so often becomes the issue when you have to justify time and cost to turn their input into output you can actually use. We know each print process requires specialist knowledge, and even minor adjustments may have issues, but that’s for us to know and judge. Too often, we are put OCTOBER 2021 • QUICK PRINT PRO
PIXEL PROPHET on the back foot because customers just expect us to press a button and sort it all out, especially if their impatience to get the job done quickly compromises the requirement to have it done well. After the work drought we have had over the last year and more, it may be tempting to just take anything on regardless. Many are trying to get back into the swing of things after furlough, and others are worried they may not have a future when it ends. There are a good many uncertainties to come. But what is important is to keep a clear management head and control the workload. As well as people, computers and printing machines get old and tired, and there won’t be many firms with a healthy bundle of cash ready to invest in shiny new kit. So the enforced layoff almost means a couple more years making do with what we had and making it last a little longer. This is why I’ve called this month’s theme ‘counter-culture’ as a reminder that for all changes the basic constraints remain. You have to spell it out to customers equally eager to ‘get back to normal’ that the most important thing on the menu is the choice of options: do you want it done quickly, done cheaply, or done well? You can have any two, but not all three. If you can get that reality check across to them, then at least you have a chance of a level playing field.
LEARNING LESSONS
One little lesson I’ve learnt the hard way is that even if you can sort a customer’s file out quickly, it’s not always wise to let them know that, or even do it while they are waiting and watching. You might be showing off your talent, but they may be thinking, why am I paying extra for something that took a few seconds? Well, that’s because you have the right tools and know-how to use them. It’s not just self-styled designers. As a photographer with more than a few years behind me from the darkroom to digital, I have to be patient with those who think they are an expert simply because they have spent a lot of money on the camera — or even on the phone. The advertising may make lots of claims about how it will do everything for you and make you an expert, but when it comes to print, reality bites. Over the years of writing this column, I’ve listed many examples of awful and sometimes comical image disasters, but I have learnt a lot at the same time. The transition from film to electronic was a steep learning curve, but through printing, I was able to get a better understanding of how digital translates all those pixels into colour and clarity — an advantage that many, even experienced photographers, don’t share. I’ve also been able to appreciate how much the software has developed in those decades. I was amused on visiting Adobe’s London headquarters a year or so back to be questioned on how long I had been using Photoshop. When I mentioned starting with Photoshop 5, they said, ‘you mean CS5?’. No, number five — introduced in the last century, like me! Over the years, and through the many updated versions of Adobe’s flagship, many features have been retained so that previous users will be familiar with it. Still, the difference in performance and potential is as different as chalk and cheese. It has had to evolve as digital files have got more complex in order to match their potential, but unlocking that potential is a much more complicated task as a result. It’s well established that there is always more than one way to sort a problem in Photoshop and several ways to use tools or a combination of them to tackle a job. The trick is knowing which is the best to use or the quickest. One of my regular jobs is doing a little restoration work on old portraits for order of service sheets for funerals. It is a sad task in some ways but satisfying in the pleasure it often QUICK PRINT PRO • OCTOBER 2021
brings to see a loved one’s image recovered from the past and rescued from cracks, creases, and patches of mould. When asked how long it took to perform such miracles, my usual reply is about ten minutes and twenty years. Whether digital or hard copy print, all images are unique, not just in composition, but in their very makeup, from the paper they are printed on to the internal combination of their pixels. The skill that only comes with experience is spotting that individuality and knowing how easy or difficult it will be to sort it out. It’s about knowing you can uncover buried treasure or just expose a minefield. One advantage of digital imaging — certainly compared to old darkroom days — is that you can put a job on pause effectively and come back to it later. It means you don’t have to be tied down to a particular time limit but can fit it into your workflow when convenient. In Photoshop, you can save a snapshot at a certain point, use a duplicate layer or even leave a virtual Post-It note just to remind yourself what you did before. Likewise, in Lightroom, you can save a virtual copy in the same working space. A bonus of just taking a break from a job and coming back to it is that you may just remember another and possibly better way of finishing it. And if you haven’t thought of one, there are now many more helpful prompts built into the programme itself, rather than searching online for someone else’s solution. Having trawled the tutorials online during lockdown to see how many experts knew more than me, I can confirm that there are at least six different solutions for every problem. Next month I promise to get back to some of the more practical ones in the workplace. 15

SELLING SOLUTIONS IS ALL ABOUT SERVICE, TRAINING AND MORE SERVICE FOR IFS As the UK printing industry recovers from its pandemic induced downturn Intelligent Finishing Systems (IFS) is experiencing a surge in demand from printers for its Technical Services. The increased interest has led to the appointment of two new Technicians to the Tech Team — Andy Nelhams and Nick Dow. IFS Managing Director Eric Keane, comments: “During the pandemic, despite the downturn, we have remained steady to the extent that we never had to downsize our team. We’ve stayed busy with installations and training work. Now we are seeing significant increase in demand from printers requiring additional print finishing operator training — in particular for Horizon or Tecnau print finishing solutions. As a result, we have hired two new experienced technicians. We will soon be taking on a further two technicians as part of our general expansion.” Mr Keane expects investment from printers in automated print finishing solutions to hit a new high over the next year. He states: “There is a lot of pent-up demand right now, particularly for automation. We already have an advanced order book for Q4 that is equal to our best in previous years and we are gearing our Tech Team up to deliver and support these solutions. We are very excited to see more installations of the recently launched Horizon ‘ICE’ range of highly automated internet connected finishing solutions. Supporting their introduction is a series of advanced training sessions with Horizon and Tecnau to ensure our Tech Team has all the latest knowledge.”
Eric Keane IFS Managing Director, welcoming new Technicians Andy Nelhams (left) and Nick Dow (right). IFS continues to build on its almost 40 year exclusive partnership with Horizon, the specialist manufacturer of technologically advanced print finishing solutions. Keane says: “We work very closely at all stages with Horizon, providing an after sales service that includes service and maintenance. We are able to uniquely provide Horizon approved technical advice on best practice, original approved spare parts and have exclusive access to provide free software upgrades where appropriate.” Also proving popular is IFS’s free onsite one hour technical ‘health check’. Says Mr Keane: “By expanding our team we will have the capacity to provide more onsite advice. It’s all part of what we do, we want our customers to get the best use from their IFS supplied systems including Horizon, Tecnau Foliant, baumannperfecta and DigiBook.” www.ifsl.uk.com

PAPER CHASE
THE GREAT RECYCLING RATE OF PAPER — LATEST STUDY Consumers are becoming increasingly conscious of their impact on the environment, and the majority of UK consumers believe the recycling rate of paper isn’t very high. This low consumer awareness is worrying when paper is, in fact, one of the most recycled materials in the world with a recycling rate of 74%. EU paper recycling rate is 74% — Paper Recycling Rate Undervalued - Paper is one of the world’s most recycled materials. In Europe 74% of paper, 56 million tonnes, was collected and recycled in 2020.[2] Paper Packaging has an even higher recycling rate of 85%. 56 million tonnes of paper collected and recycled in 2020 — However, the study reveals 46% of UK consumers believe that paper and paper packaging is wasteful and highlights a real lack of understanding of the high recycling rates. Only 17% of UK consumers believe the recycling rate exceeds 60%. 15% think it is less than 20%, 34% between 20-39% and 34% between 40-59%. 18-24 year olds have the biggest misconception relating to recycling, with just 12% believing the recycling rate exceeds 60%. Paper compares favourably to other recycling rates: Glass 74%, Metal 80%, Plastic 42% and Electronics 42%. Recycled And Virgin Paper (Fibre) Equally Important And Sustainable — As the research found that 66% of UK consumers believe only recycled paper should be used, it’s clear that most people understand the need for recycling paper and the fact that it’s sustainable. But, this also demonstrates a persistent myth that recycled paper is better for the environment. Recycled paper (fibre) is an essential part of the fibre mix. In 2020, paper for recycling made up 56% of fibre used.[5] In Europe, on average, paper fibres are recycled 3.8 times[6] and, after several uses, the recycled fibres degrade. Virgin fibre, from sustainably managed forests, is therefore always required to maintain the paper cycle. Pulp and paper industry sources 56% of its fibre from paper for recycling — More Misconceptions Around Paper – The print and paper industry is surrounded by myths, many of which are rooted in historical misconceptions about paper’s impact on forests. For many years, service providers have reinforced these environmental myths in their efforts to move consumers to
digital communications. The need to bust these myths and raise awareness of paper’s sustainability is now more important than ever. The study found that only 9% of UK consumers understand that European forests are growing, when between 2005 and 2020, European forests grew by 58,390km² – that’s an area larger than Switzerland and equivalent to 1,500 football pitches of forest growth every day. Between 2005 and 2020, European forests grew by an area the size of Switzerland — Another myth commonly associated with the print and paper industry is that it uses a lot of energy in the paper making and print process. The truth is the pulp, paper and print industry is one of the leading sectors when it comes to renewable energy and mitigating carbon impact. The industry is relatively energy-intensive, but it also has a proven commitment to energy efficiency and is Europe’s biggest industrial user of renewable energy. This explains why the sector is responsible for comparatively low greenhouse gas emissions, at 0.8% of the European total Only by highlighting these myths and explaining the facts can people understand the true sustainability of paper as a raw material within the circular economy. www.twosides.info

HP AND PERFECT COLOURS RECYCLED SATIN CANVAS
We’ve all seen those awful pictures on television of plastic bottles left floating in the sea and turtles with carrier bags in their mouths, after which we are left wondering what on earth we can do to put a stop to plastic pollution. Between five and 13 million tons of plastic are leaked into the oceans every year, with an astonishing 91% of plastic waste not being recycled. As is the case with all other industries, print has a major role to play in not only reducing the amount of plastic waste produced by the industry, but also inventing ways to reuse and repurpose recycled plastic in innovative ways. HP is at the forefront of this effort and is fiercely dedicated to environmental protection efforts. This has led to the creation of a new product in the form of HP Recycled Satin Canvas, a printable canvas made from 100% recycled water bottles retrieved from the ocean during organised clean-ups. Crucially, HP Recycled Satin Canvas is entirely compliant with the REACH European Commission standard for the protection of human health and the environment, making it eligible for return through the HP Large-Format Media take-back programme. It offers a more eco-conscious media solution for printers around the world and, for customers in the UK, approved HP reseller Perfect Colours has recently set up a new website dedicated to the product. On the launch of the new portal, Jason Burroughs, Managing Director of Perfect Colours, explains: “We are passionate about our environment and want
to ensure products such as these, no matter who creates them, are marketed to help promote a better tomorrow. “Rarely does such a truly ground breaking product come along. This new media, made from raw materials reclaimed from the ocean, is certainly in line with our environmental goals as a business. The product is unique. As such, we’ve created a bespoke website to give our customers the opportunity to learn more about it — and purchase it — online.” While the obvious advantage of using HP Recycled Satin Canvas is that it allows printers to offer their customers a more sustainable solution, there are plenty of other benefits. HP Recycled Satin Canvas is lower priced than most like for like media, offering printers cost savings in addition to environmental benefits. Also, while the new canvas does not feature any coatings, which can often be costly and potentially harmful to the environment, it does have a professional textured satin finish for extremely high print quality. A durable media that resists edge cracking when stretched, the canvas produces outstanding image quality and precise colours on a bright white, slightly textured, satin finish canvas, and is suitable for print applications such as photo enlargements, reproductions and retail, corporate and hospitality décor. There has already been plenty of interest in the product according to Jason Burroughs. He continues: “The new eco-conscious HP Recycled Satin Canvas media and our supporting website has been very well received. We have already had several enquiries from customers.” By creating this new product — and with Perfect Colours’ support — HP is stopping thousands and thousands of water bottles from further polluting the oceans and turning them into a new product that itself can be recycled and used again in a new form. Jason concludes: “Of course, the actual impact that this one recycling scheme will have on ocean pollution is just part of the solution. However, when combined with other similar ideas and initiatives, we really can have a positive impact on the environment.” www.hprecycledcanvas.com
INNOTECH UNVEILS COST EFFECTIVE PVC-FREE BANNER Innotech Digital has announced immediate availability of the latest addition to their PVC-free media range, Envirotech PVC Free Frontlit Banner 150gsm FR B1. As well as being environmentally responsible, the new robust 150gsm front lit banner material delivers exceptional value. The biggest challenge for printers to date has been the cost of PVC-Free materials compared with the PVC alternative. Now they can put that concern behind them! Kieran Dallow, Marketing Manager for Innotech Digital, says, “We believe this new banner material is the most cost effective PVC-free banner solution currently available in the market. Its price is comparable to standard 440gsm PVC front lit media and is a very viable alternative solution for environmentally conscious companies wishing to make a real stand against the over use of PVC in our industry.” The new Envirotech PVC-free banner has been proven in testing to be weldable, although it is still recommended to test this with customer specific machinery. “Being weldable is a huge benefit for our customers because most PVC-Free banners currently on the market are not weldable and require additional stitching or banner tape, which can be more costly and time consuming,” adds Dallow. The new product is fire rated to B1 Certification and is suitable for printing with eco-solvent, solvent, UV-curable and latex inks. It is available in 1600mm and 3200mm widths and with durability equivalent to 440gsm banner PVC

materials it is ideal for indoor and outdoor campaign graphics. With around 250,000sqm of eco-friendly materials in stock, Innotech has one of the widest and most extensive PVC-Free media availability in the industry. www.innotechdigital.com

NEW PROFIT CENTRE
DTG OR DYE SUB – HOW TO MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE By Tom Owers, Pro Graphics Manager ,at Epson UK: Refreshing your service offering…Developing broader application possibilities…Expanding your production horizon. Whatever your business objectives, the addition of Direct-To-Garment or dye-sublimation printing can enhance your creative flexibility while saving you money. Both production processes are predicted to see exciting growth driven by increased interest in sustainability, customisation and creativity. Market Insights predicts the global direct to garment printing market will reach $2.31 billion by 2023 up from $1.86 billion in 2018. While Smithers’ The Future of Dye-Sublimation Printing to 2023 says the sector will experience a strong compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.2% to 2023 and increase total market value to €12.4 billion. But how do you decide what technology to invest in? The main difference between the two is the type of materials that can be printed on – cotton or polyester. With DTG, as the name suggests, artwork is printed directly onto the garment. The technology uses water based CMYK and white pigment ink, so these inks can print on dark or light coloured T-Shirts, hoodies, jumpers or any 100% cotton garment. It is possible to print onto poly/cotton blends as long as cotton content is 50%. With dye sublimation, artwork is printed in full colour onto transfer paper using dye sublimation ink and paper. The ink is then transferred from the paper to the fabric using heat and pressure. It works best with white, 100% polyester and as such is suited to sportswear and fashion. An additional application, ideal for the photo gifting market is sublimating to polymer coated rigid substrates such as mobile phone covers, ceramic mugs, or special metal sheets. Another difference is the process itself. When DTG printing the garment is loaded onto the printer platen and the inks are applied directly. When printing onto dark garments an under layer of white ink is printed first whilst for light coloured garments only CMYK is used, so they are quicker to produce. Pretreatment is optional for light garments (improves vibrancy) but essential for dark garments. This process stops the white ink soaking into fabric and ensures a pure white base for CMYK inks to be applied. A heat press or tunnel dyer is then used post print to cure the inks. Dye sublimation is a two-step process that that uses dye sublimation inks. The image is mirrored in the driver of RIP software (so it faces correct way when transferred) before being printed on sublimation transfer paper. The process is then completed by bringing the printed design together with chosen substrate and applying heat and pressure, via a heat press or calendar. Timings, pressure and temperature will all vary depending on what is being sublimated to. Speed is also consideration. DTG printers are generally scalable and simple to run as part of a workflow so it’s easy to produce a steady volume of garments. As the garments are already finished a potential bottleneck can be avoided post print, but applications are limited to off the shelf, cotton based products. Dye sublimation is a more involved process but supports greater application variety and much more freedom in terms of finished output or product. For example, once a roll of fabric has been printed, it could then be cut and sewn into all manner of garments or products. In short, the pros for DTG are its ability to quickly and easily print vibrantly
coloured, customised designs onto finished cotton garments while requiring only a small working area. Dye sublimation pros are its high durability, vibrancy of colour and the ability to print designs on hard and soft materials for a broad range of applications. The key benefit for both is that they enable onsite, on-demand textile printing, producing a low carbon footprint in comparison to traditional textile production. The fashion industry produces 20% of all global wastewater and 10% of global carbon emissions, but localising fashion using more on-demand digital printing can save up to 4Kg of CO2 per item. As print production technology for both DTG and dye sublimation continues to evolve, so too do the opportunities for minimising our burdens on the environment. Epson’s benchmark of reliable DTG printing, the SureColor SC-F2100, has recently been joined by the SureColor SC-F3000, designed for higher volume users requiring increased productivity and a low total cost of ownership. The dye sublimation solutions in Epson’s growing portfolio range from entry to industrial level, including our first A4 dye sublimation printer, the SureColor SCF100, up to our 255sqm/hr SureColor SC-F10000 76in wide format printer. www.epson.co.uk/products/printers/large-format-printers

MAKING AN IMPACT WITH WINDOW, WALL AND FLOOR GRAPHICS
for the local economy and a catalyst for bringing communities together. However, empty store fronts are an eyesore and what they represent is depressing; they make people less likely to visit an area and limit the incomes of nearby stores, retailers and landlords. But when these empty windows are combined with print media, they represent an opportunity for the savvy marketeer to take advantage of valuable advertising space and raise the collective psyche of the community.
MAKING A SPLASH ON SOCIAL MEDIA
Matt Manteit, International Sales Manager at Neschen Coating says: Whether it is opening a new store or restaurant, directing people online, or building awareness of a brand, it is critical to stand out and be seen by your target audience. After all, you want potential customers to be able to easily find their way to your business. As bricks and mortar continue to merge with ecommerce, print media remains a powerful way to promote your business, and as such is regarded as an essential communication medium and a critical part of the marketing mix. Printed media helps businesses to connect their physical store with their online shop and, if executed well, offers a seamless transition, a consistent experience and ultimately strengthens both mediums. Print can be used to take advantage of the omni-channel customer trend by creating spaces where customers want to spend time, while highlighting ‘as seen on Instagram’ products or deals to drive in-store sales from online promotions. It can also be used to direct customers to click and collect locations, as well as to create a stir on social media.
EVOLVING RETAIL LANDSCAPE
The last 18 months have seen an increase in high street, shopping mall, town and city centre vacancy rates. When these areas are bustling and vibrant, they provide a boost
The closure of retail and leisure facilities over the past 18 months saw the use of social media rocket as consumers turned to the platforms as a method of entertainment. However, these platforms can also be a valuable resource for brands as a way of interacting and connecting with users, with further potential for links between printed media and online. The last year has taught us that the attention grabbing value of floor graphics is very high. It is the ideal medium to get noticed and to draw focus to a specific location, product or promotion, especially when a 3D effect is used.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS
When referencing some of the major trends in the market, it is only right to single out an area that is posing challenges for print companies around the world. Customers and clients are demanding more environmentally friendly printed work than ever before, and the pressure is on to ensure work meets these requirements. Working with more environmentally friendly products is one way of addressing these demands. One such material comes in the form of the Neschen Easy Dot PVC-Free range, which comprises PP or PET films that can be used to produce graphics for windows, walls and floors.
TURBO CHARGE INSTALLATION
Neschen Easy Dot® makes installation so quick and easy, anyone can do it. That includes store staff who, for instance, may be more at home serving customers, but can easily install the graphics in store without training or specialist equipment. The innovative dot adhesive technology, engineered by Neschen, is a matrix of adhesive dots precisely formulated to ensure maximum removal of air whilst enhancing adhesive performance. Easy Dot® guarantees a bubble free application that is faster and easier to install than traditional “air-flow” adhesives and residue free removal - the perfect solution for short term campaigns on windows, walls and floors. www.neschen.de/en • www.artsystems.co.uk
TO LAMINATE OR NOT TO LAMINATE? Dennis LeBlanc at Drytac, discusses when graphics should and shouldn’t be laminated: To laminate or not to laminate? Have you ever asked yourself this question? If not, then perhaps you should. It could be the difference between winning or losing your next job. Laminates are an integral part of graphics and will be for years to come. However, there is a time and place for them — as well as occasions and applications when they might not be needed. So, what are the reasons for laminating? The most common use for lamination is to protect your output from the elements — such as UV degradation — and enhance outdoor durability. You can also use laminates to finish a job with gloss, lustre or matte textures or to add an extra property to the graphic such as an anti-graffiti coating or slip resistance. Laminates can also be used to add body and thickness to your output. This can be particularly useful when printing onto thinner materials; the extra layer will stop the graphic stretching and simplify the installation process.
30
If your focus is on protecting the ink layer of a graphic, you should also consider laminating all long term work — both indoors and outdoors — as well as output that will be situated in high traffic locations such as corridors and hallways. When considering lamination for finishing effects, this is only necessary on some occasions as most print media is available in different finishes. Newer print hardware even allows for gloss and matte output from the get-go through their ink setup. Did you notice a reoccurring theme here? Most of the reasoning behind lamination is for longer term applications, or, to put it simply, projects that will remain in place for more than one year. This begs the question: what about short term revolving graphics? Do you need to laminate these as well? Outside of the need for adding additional functionality to the graphic, in most short term applications you can eliminate the need for laminating by choosing a thicker print media with an easy install or removable adhesive solution. These materials will do the job wonderfully and
avoid the added cost and labour of lamination, providing substantial savings for you and your clients. Today’s print media offerings have addressed this with 4mil materials and dot adhesives for easy installation and 6mil removable solutions that won’t stretch as you work with them. To that point, there are now textured solutions readily available that can provide scuff, scratch and slip resistance on their own. Taking all this into account, perhaps ask yourself again: to laminate or not to laminate? That is — indeed — the question you should be asking. It might just save you both time and money. www.drytac.com

THE JOKE’S ON YOU
READERS’ SCRIBES
SOMETHING TO SHARE? TRAINLOAD CRASH
A truckload of tortoises crashed into a trainload of terrapins. It was a turtle disaster.
GARDENING MYSTERY
Someone keeps dumping soil all over my garden bed, and I don’t know who’s doing it??? The plot thickens...
TWO WORDS
First grade teacher: “There are two words I don’t allow in my class. One is ‘gross’ and the other is ‘cool.’” Rachel: “Yeah? So, what are the words?”
THROWING DARTS
Husband throwing darts at his wife’s photo and not even a single throw hitting the target. From another room the wife calls, “Honey, what are you doing?” Husband: “MISSING YOU...”
TOP 20 REVIVED 45 PUNS
Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. 1. Two antennas met on a roof, fell in love and got married. The ceremony wasn’t much, but the reception was excellent. 2. A jumper cable walks into a bar. The bartender says, “I’ll serve you, but don’t start anything.” 3. Two peanuts walk into a bar, and one was a salted. 4. A dyslexic man walks into a bra. 5. A man walks into a bar with a slab of asphalt under his arm, and says “A beer please, and one for the road.” 6. Two cannibals are eating a clown. One says to the other: “Does this taste funny to you?” 7. “Doc, I can’t stop singing ‘The Green, Green Grass of Home.” “That sounds like Tom Jones Syndrome.” “Is it common?” Well, “It’s Not Unusual.” 8. Two cows are standing next to each other in a field. Daisy says to Dolly, “I was artificially inseminated this morning.” “I don’t believe you,” says Dolly. “It’s true; no bull!” exclaims Daisy. 9. An invisible man marries an invisible woman. The
Tequila is an excellent teacher.
kids were nothing to look at either. 10. Deja Moo: The feeling that you’ve heard this bull before. 11. I went to buy some camouflage trousers the other day, but I couldn’t find any. 12. A man woke up in a hospital after a serious accident. He shouted, “Doctor, doctor, I can’t feel my legs!” The doctor replied, “I know you can’t - I’ve cut off your arms!” 13. I went to a seafood disco last week...and pulled a mussel. 14. What do you call a fish with no eyes? A fsh. 15. Two fish swim into a concrete wall. The one turns to the other and says, “Dam!” 16. Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were chilly, so, they lit a fire in the craft. Unsurprisingly it sank, proving once again that you can’t have your kayak and heat it too. 17. A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel and were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament victories. After about an hour, the manager came out of the office, and asked them to disperse. “But why,” they asked, as they moved off. “Because,” he said, “I can’t stand chessnuts boasting in an open foyer.” 18. A woman has twins, and gives them up for adoption. One of them goes to a family in Egypt, and is named “Ahmal.” The other goes to a family in Spain; they name him “Juan.” Years later, Juan sends a picture of himself to his birth mother. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wishes she also had a picture of Ahmal. Her husband responds, “They’re twins! If you’ve seen Juan, you’ve seen Ahmal.” 19. Mahatma Gandhi, as you know, walked barefoot most of the time, which produced an impressive set of calluses on his feet. He also ate very little, which made him rather frail and with his odd diet, he suffered from bad breath. This made him. (Oh, man, this is so bad, it’s good) .... A super-calloused fragile mystic hexed by halitosis. 20. And finally, there was the person who sent twenty different puns to his friends, with the hope that at least ten of the puns would make them laugh. No pun in ten did.
Just last night it taught me to count.
SIZE MATTERS
Elton John thinks ‘sorry’ seems to be the hardest word. He clearly hasn’t been to Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.
SOLAR ECLIPSE
“Dad, can you tell me what a solar eclipse is?” “No sun.”
MY FAVOURITE EXERCISE
My favourite exercise is a cross between a lunge and a crunch. It’s called lunch.
BAR CHAT
A man with a stutter died in prison before he finished his sentence!
THE WISDOM OF A WISE MAN
I sought business advice from a wise man the other day and he said, “He who knows and knows he knows, knows not. He who knows not and knows he knows not, knows.” I don’t know who’s going to do my print shop accounts next year, but I know it won’t be him again.
BEST WORK
Skeleton 1: This isn’t your best work. Skeleton 2: I know. My heart isn’t in it.
SKELETONS
Why don’t skeletons ever get mad? Nothing gets under their skin.
MORE HALLOWEEN GHOST AND GOBLINS
Why do ghosts go on diets? So, they can keep their ghoulish figures. Why did the ghost go into the bar? For the Boos. Why do demons and ghouls hang out together? Because demons are a ghoul’s best friend! Why did the ghost starch his sheet? He wanted everyone scared stiff. What’s a ghost’s favourite dessert? I-Scream! Where do ghosts buy their food? At the ghost-ery store!
