Thanks for the support of all of our new advertisers and of course the old ones like Intaprint that have sponsored these pages for 15 years. There is a ‘new kid’ on the production block and what they have to offer the print shop owner may look familiar to you? Check out the latest developments on page 15. See you in October. Mannin customers ‘spot the difference’

ITS customers cannot discern the difference in quality between its litho and digital work and that was the acid test for Mannin Media Group, a printing and publishing business on the Isle of Man which recently installed the Heidelberg Linoprint C 901. The company invited visitors in to look at the new machine, marking its debut in digital printing, and they gave away free business cards, a marketing initiative which has already paid for itself many times over. The company believes that in its first year of production the Linoprint C 901 will account for 20% of its turnover. “We looked first at the C 751 but the volume of work we had which could easily transfer or secure justified our decision to go for the C 901. I am a big Heidelberg fan. We have a Suprasetter and a Speedmaster SM 74 already and we might trade in the SM 74 for an SX 74 in the next two years,” says Steven Brown, chief executive of the company. “We might even have to return for a second Linoprint C 901 if the volume continues to increase. It is already outputting 200,000 pages a month and

now we have also added a Duplo digital booklet maker.” Mannin Media finds the breakpoint between litho and digital for them lies in the 500 to 750 window, varying of course on the nature of the job and its pagination. The Linoprint is operating on a flexible single shift basis and will handle work not only for the local Manx market but for companies in London and the Home Counties, including a religious organisation and high profile London theatre. “Customers want the right quality, service and price and they don’t mind which technology is used to achieve that so we place work to the machine we think will meet those needs best,” says Mr Brown. “Litho still has a strong future and that is why we are looking for an investment in that area next.” In addition to printing, the Mannin Media Group also publishes a number of titles including Manx Tales, Manx Life and Money Media from its site just outside Douglas. More information from Mark Hogan, Heidelberg UK, on 0844 892 2010 or Steven Brown, the Mannin Media Group, on 01624-696565.

Father and son team shortlisted for National Award

CHRIS and Andy Simpson, owners of FASTSIGNS, a signage, graphics and visual communications company in Leeds are down to the final four contenders for a prestigious franchisee of the Year award. They have been shortlisted by the bfa (British Franchise Association) in the Long Serving

category and will find out if they have won in October. Dad Chris set up the business, which is based in York Road, with his son Andy 18 years ago. Now the company is the top performing FASTSIGNS centre in the UK and employs 12 people. So far this year it is smashing all of its previous sales

records and recently produced 2000 square metres of graphics and signage in record time for the prestigious new Trinity Shopping Centre in Leeds. Said Chris: “We are obviously delighted to be finalists in the 2013 bfa Awards. We have never looked back since setting up the business 18 years ago. “It is fitting that the nomination has come in our best ever year. Despite being in a recession, over the past three years we have had the confidence in our business to invest over £200,000 in new state of the art equipment and take on more people. We knew that in such a competitive marketplace standing still wasn’t an option and our strategy has clearly worked. Sales and enquiries are at a record high and our customer satisfaction level is running at 93%. “We have a fantastic team here — if we win the award it will be all down to their hard work and commitment.” The award dinner is to be held at the ICC in Birmingham on 3 October. The overall winner chosen from five award categories will win £10,000 from sponsor HSBC Bank. For more information contact Chris or Andy Simpson on 0113 248 3500.

PressOn First New HP Latex 3000 Printer

HP has announced that following a long history of HP Latex technology investments, digital large format print specialists, PressOn, of Rochester, Kent, is the first customer worldwide to invest in the new HP Latex 3000 Printer. “We are currently at capacity, so the new HP Latex 3000 will enable us to take on further work and utilise its increased speed and industrial design to improve customer response times,” said Andy Wilson, co-director, PressOn. “Additionally, with the 3000’s five litre ink cartridges, it can run unattended overnight, reducing operator costs but maximising achievable production time and increasing our revenue potential.” According to Andy, the HP Latex technology is much more stable than any other technology, especially for self adhesive vinyl graphics, typically used for fleet and vehicle graphics applications. Mixed with the company’s ‘can do’ attitude, this stability has given PressOn a huge competitive edge and the confidence to provide a customer guarantee for the durability of its HP Latex graphics. This guarantee has enabled PressOn to expand year on year, and win work against much larger businesses and in-house production departments. “Where solvent technology is problematic from an environmental and scratch resistance perspective, the nature of UV baking alters the structure of the substrate, making it brittle and a problem to remove. Generally speaking, neither technology is as durable or versatile as HP Latex for these

applications, added to which, as soon as a graphic leaves an HP Latex printer, it is ready to be despatched to the customer. In winning work, this is a huge advantage for us.” Since installing its first HP Latex printer in 2010, the HP Latex technology platform has been the backbone of the PressOn business with a portfolio including an HP Scitex Latex 600 Printer and an HP Latex 850 - last year printing roughly 110,000m2 on its HP Latex 850 alone. Production and application versatility - The HP Latex 3000 Printer is a six colour, 3.2m device with resolution options up to1200dpi. Printing at outdoor quality, the system can run at speeds up to 120m2/hr (1290ft2/hr), ideal for busy production environments. The new printer also offers important versatility improvements for indoor and outdoor applications savings. Water based HP Latex 881 Inks, developed for the printer, offer scratch resistance comparable to hard-solvent inks when printed on self adhesive and PVC banner substrates. The prints from HP 881 Latex Inks are odourless and ideal for applications from indoor retail displays, outdoor advertising, vehicle graphics and interior décor. The inks also offer a 15-20 per cent wider gamut than six colour UV printers, critical for corporate brand colour matching and accurate reproduction of skin tones. The inks produce prints that are dry from the printer and ready to finish or despatch immediately, thereby accelerating throughput and response times. In addition, they are dried and cured at low temperatures, which not only offers energy savings, but extends the range of substrates that can be used with the HP Latex 3000 Printer. “The print industry in the UK has generally been in decline, but large format digital printing continues to grow,” Andy Wilson said. “Since we began as digital printers, we haven’t had to undergo the process of migrating from screen or litho, so our mind-set is purely digital, which has been a great advantage to our growth.” “The new HP Latex 3000 Printer will help us to maintain this progress and better meet the virtually on-demand customer requests for high quality print applications,” concluded Wilson. PressOn was founded in 2000 and currently employs 15 people in Rochester, and 20 at its installation centres in Manchester and Scotland. to ine point size, reversed out of a coloured background), liberating design professionals from any concern about optimum output resolution for type or photographic images. The machine features a unique, patented photonic technology resulting in an output equivalent to more than 8000 dpi inkjet quality. Commenting on the announcement Rob King, Director at Altaimage, said; “We are very excited about the arrival of the LumeJet S200, as we believe it opens up new markets for us. The ultra high quality output is a step up from anything we have been able to offer previously. For those looking for pin-point sharpness and absolute colour reproduction, we now have a machine that can deliver.” An inkless process, the LumeJet S200 takes 305 mm photographic roll paper for page sizes up to A3 landscape double page spread, full bleed, including trim (1000 x 305 mm maximum) – ideal for layflat books. Using RGB colourspace, it’s ICC profiled and achieves amazing colour fidelity, including hard to print Pantone spot colours like Reflex Blue, neons, metallics and pastels, not to mention flawless solid black. www.lumejet.com

Xerox Removes Speed Bumps in Wide Format WITH the growing demand for large indoor posters, signs, point of purchase graphics and banners, Xerox’s new Wide Format IJP 2000 gives printers the extra speed needed to produce more jobs faster. Increased speed means printers can accept and produce more wide format jobs, even last minute requests. “The IJP 2000 breaks the mould in terms of speed and brings a huge competitive advantage to our customers,” said Dustin Graupman, Vice President, Inkjet Business, Xerox. “Part of the challenge of wide format jobs is they can create a significant speed bump in the work process – and profitability. That’s why we’ve designed an uninterrupted operation right into the printer.” Key features of the IJP 2000 single pass device include faster print speeds; complete jobs more than 40 times faster than comparable wide format systems (up to 4,520 square feet/420 square metres per hour at 1600 x 1600 dpi). That means high quality, colour signs can be printed in five seconds, nine metre banners in one minute and production runs of 200 prints in about 20 minutes. Stationary print heads: allow the paper to move under five print heads in one single pass; fewer moving parts mean better speed and less maintenance. High vibrancy with instantly dry ink: produce a variety of full colour products – from tradeshow banners and presentation graphics to life size photos and promotional displays – with crisp, precise imagery. Expansive specialty media range: allow printers to offer customers more choices in wide format applications, with media such as banner fabric, photo gloss, satin and backlit/stoplight films, in addition to standard and coated papers. Industry leading wide format workflow software: the Caldera GrandRIP+

keeps the device running at full rated speed while processing jobs. The software is easy to use, even for new operators, and includes spot colour matching for a uniform look across different jobs and media. Personalised software (optional): produce personalised materials quickly and efficiently with Xerox FreeFlow VI Design Expresssoftware. This Adobe InDesign plug-in simplifies the design and creation of variable signs; includes templates and step-by-step instructions. The IJP 2000 is on display at FESPA, June 25-29 in London www.xerox.com

DSales new Develop colour multifunction launch DSALES (UK) Ltd, the UK distributor for the Develop range of multifunctional document imaging systems, has launched a new generation of Develop mid-range colour systems. The new ineo+ 224e/284e/364e offer 22, 28 and 36 colour or mono A4 prints per minute respectively but otherwise have the same feature specifications. A highlight of the three new systems is the multi-touch operating panel. Anyone familiar with smartphone and tablet operation will feel instantly at home with the ineo+ 224e/284e/364e. The tiltable nine inch colour touchscreen display lights up allowing well known multi-touch operations including such as flick, drag and drop and pinch in and out. Improved navigation structure allows easy feature selection with the user able to see all functions in one go and select the required settings with just a few clicks. Users can customise the screen to their individual requirements to save themselves time and boost efficiency. The print engine and innovative HD (High Definition) toner are finely tuned to deliver razorsharp 1,200 dpi copies and prints with brilliant colours and easily readable small type. Output can be onto envelopes, recycled paper, pre-printed paper, overhead transparencies and other media including card up to 300gsm thick. A broad range of paper sizes formats from A6 to A3+ (SRA3) or user-defined formats can be used and banners of up to 1.2 metres in length can be printed for

posters and point of sale material. With growing demand for electronic filing the ineo+ 224e/284e/364e can help to improve the efficiency of the document workflow by reducing the amount of manual work involved in scanning. Documents can be scanned directly as Word (.docx), Excel (.xlsx), PowerPoint (.pptx) or searchable PDF files to do away with the need for manual file conversion. Scanned documents can also be distributed in a variety of ways, including as e-mails or through transfer to a Windows folder or FTP server. For customers wishing to cut energy costs and carbon footprint the ineo+ 224e/284e/364e have various energy saving functions include a very economical sleep mode and a dynamic Eco Timer that adapts the system’s active phases to its actual operating periods. As a result, the ineo+ 224e/284e/364e consume very little power in average office use. Other ‘green’ functions include automatic deletion of blank pages to avoid paper wastage. To ensure data security the ineo+ 224e/284e/364e are certified to ISO 15408 EAL 3 computer security standard and comply with IEEE 2600.1, the international standard for multifunctional printer security. Numerous features such as hard-disk encryption, data erasure (when required) and standard compliance with TSL, SSL and IPsec provide full reassurance of data integrity. A secure printing function prevents

documents from getting into the wrong hands and access to the system can be restricted to authorised users only. Commenting on the new colour mid-range launch, Jonathan Whitworth, Managing Director of DSales (UK) said, “Constant innovation means that the Develop multifunctional range is the most technically advanced on the market. These three new systems take what is best in the existing range and add intuitive touch-screen control and a host of eco-friendly features. Today our customers demand low-energy systems and maximum data security. With the ineo+ 224e/284e/364e we meet their needs.” www.dsales.eu

QPP Summer Print Camp 2013

QPP readers from far and wide, the furthest from Istanbul, have been descending on the QPP print camp by the sea to mix a little sight seeing with a bit of print product viewing, not necessarily in that order. New laminators from Vivid, new Xerox colour print and copy equipment and a mono printer from Brother that blew your socks off ready for the beach. A new Contex large format scanner captured something big for visitors to take home printed on the Epson T-series LFP.

New Xerox impresses all

Big Brother saves print shop customer eviction ONE of the summer stars at the QPP Print Camp has to be the new Brother HL-S7000 DN 100 ppm system that is a best buy recommendation at around £2500. Cluster print four together for a revolutionary 400 ppm at under £10k investment. More economical than toner and superseding any preconceived ideas on inkjet shortcomings the new pre-coat plain paper print system is a must buy this summer. Already making our own shop money by taking printing where no toner model has been before. One not too frequent customer of Colourfast appeared with some old Basildon bond letterhead that needed copying on. The A5 letter heading was pre-printed using thermography and as we may all have discovered, plastic and fuser rollers do not mix. No problems, as we have the new Brother HL-S7000 DN starring in our QPP summer Print Camp, that has proved to print on anything we have thrown at it. One short email, well around 10 feet to the QPP beta test site centre in the room next door to the print shop, and one more happy end-user. The print quality utilises new print dot technology that fills in the steps with smaller dots. Check out the video on our front page www.QuickPrintPro.co.uk

VISITORS have been very impressed with the new Xerox XC 560 colour printer and copier. This kit will be as popular as the old Xerox DC12 revolution when anyone in print had to have one, as it was such a good fit into a professional print service provider business. The print quality is, well superb, and the reproduction from the glass is rather special too. Some of the recent print engines from various manufacturers seem to have lost that colour crispness when copying from the glass platen. Yes; the biggest volumes are from printers that don’t necessarily have a scanner for hard copy, but when bundles of originals appear that can be colour copied through a document feeder then old high street prices still apply. No need to go sub 50 pence on a longer run and yes a whole pound is still achievable for one off each original.

Walk on by WHILE many of you were down in Brighton some of our QPP team escaped to… well you tell us where you think that Lara and her lovely family found a QPP print business in a church? Correct answers will be drawn from a hat, or more likely an old toner box, with the first one out winning a special gift. All past winners of our walk on by competitions have been nicely surprised. Email your details and location before next copy deadline and no phoning Lara asking where she has been on holiday…Dean this includes you!

Groundhog Day…again Well, what a surprise. Martin Christie says the story so far is that the annual photographic expo held in March at the NEC has been cancelled. So next year we will have a photogaphic expo at the NEC in March.

W

ELL PROBABLY NOT so much of a surprise that someone has picked up the bouncing ball dropped by Mary Walker Exhibitions after twenty four years. Future, an international specialist media group, which publishes several current photography magazines, has launched a four day show at the Birmingham venue, almost slotting into the established dates. They have resisted the temptation to use over hyped key words like ‘digital’ in the title, and called it simply The Photography Show, a name that can embrace all manner of products and services now in common usage. The significance, as mentioned in our last issue, is that this is an opportunity for a change of direction recognising that the photography market has changed dramatically from the original target audience of Focus on Imaging. Hardly surprising as anything digital was merely a novelty two decades ago. Focus was not sold on, it was simply folded. So this is not the same exhibition under a new name, although it will inevitably share many of the previous exhibitors. Future has headlined it as a show for the consumer, as well as for the enthusiast, and the professional. And these days anyone who has a mobile phone is a consumer. The amateur photographer is no longer the hermit hiding in a dark room in the attic, but sharing his images with the world on social networking sites. The press of a single button, and the movement of a mouse has revolutionised how we view and publish pictures, and this is only the beginning. To be fair to Focus, it had coped with the transition from film to pixel quite well, the one rubbing shoulders with the other, until the latter became the dominant product on the exhibition floor. But there comes a time for a shake up and a new look. Long running exhibitions can develop their own momentum, much like a giant container ship, made up of lots of individual parts, but collectively cumbersome and difficult to stop or change direction. Established exhibitors are often reluctant to change position or appearance, so there is always the possible perception of critics that it is the same old

show, even if much of the content has changed. So the opportunity to start with a clean sheet of paper and draw a new plan is welcome, and hopefully Future will grasp the opportunity. A sign they will is a small but important change of days. Focus ran tradtionally from an opening Sunday to a Wednesday to cover what were once considered public and mid-week trade days. The Photography Show will run from Saturday to Tuesday, underlining that it is aimed more directly at the expanding consumer image market, and recognising that the distinction between trade and public has lost its importance. Where Focus was comparatively static — with lots of wall space devoted to displays of solid prints, Future aims to make its new expo interactive with more opportunities to give visitors actual hands on experience of the whole image making adventure. It all sounds very ambitious in the press releases, and rightly so. It is a time to be ambitious. Digital imaging is in exciting times. It has never before been so convenient for people at all levels to shoot and share photography. And you can see the evidence on the street, in coffee bars and every public place. Most importantly it is all moving at a much faster pace than ever before so that today’s novelty could be outdated by next week. And there’s no doubt that Future, with its large portfolio of hi-tech magazines, will be aiming to generate the excitement of the next big thing in its promotion. I have given the news some space in this column not only because digital imaging is an essential part of most things we do as printers, and that the exhibition will no doubt share some of our familiar industry partners, but because it is interesting to see what our own core trade is doing to meet the challenge of the new technology. The answer would seem to be very little, and rather continue to plough the old familiar farrow, ignoring that the market has moved on. We know that because we deal with the new consumers at the shop counter. They are empowered by the new technology, not only to take pictures that would previously have required a professional photographer, but to create designs and artwork that would have needed a trained designer. The photographic industry is reaching out to the new consumers, and the printing industry should be too. The new technology has now swung back in our favour ironically as the popularity of the mobile tablet rather than the desktop means that hard copy will continue to be a commercial proposition rather than a home production. It needs some far sighted people higher up in the industry than me to seize this opportunity and promote our wide ranging skills and services to the developing consumer market. For you diary, the Photography show is at the NEC Birmingham, 1st to 4th March 2014. For more information on The Photography Show please contact Jonny Sullens at jonny.sullens@futurenet.com or 0207 042 4301.

SCAN IT AGAIN, SAM

THE scanning feature in the last issue created some interest so I am expanding on it as a result of several enquiries. It’s not rocket science, though many people seem to steer away from it as though it’s a specialist service. More importantly, some who offer it as a specialist service are making more of a meal of it than the task deserves. Certainly if you are getting into the areas of high resolution and accurate colour matching then it can be a bit of a black art, but that is also part of matching scans with print output through whatever print media is being used. But as a basic service it is an important part of the bureau because anything that isn’t already digital, from electronic media, needs to be scanned in and turned into something with a suitable quota of pixels. Copiers of course make good instant digital scanners otherwise they would not produce such good prints. But we all know that often you can produce a very accurate print straight off the glass, but when the same original is saved as a scan, the resulting digital file may be very different. Obviously the print program used makes a difference, as there are colour profile options both in the software used and at the printer end of the output, but the most common problem with scans from digital copiers is that while they are very good at copying they are not very good at saving. Regardless of the file format chosen they will generally save a compressed version which means that a large amount of important colour information is lost. Scanning at the highest possible resolution helps. As the original has now been broken down into pixels the important thing is to open it in Photoshop to check, make any slight alterations that may be necessary, and then use the “Save As” function to be sure you save at maximum quality. If you simply use “save” you will compress the file again. Alternatively you may want to invest in a dedicated flatbed scanner. Good quality A4 scanners, and even A3 ones are not that expensive. It’s only when you go up to A2 and beyond that the price goes off the scale, let alone the desk space needed to house it. That’s why most studios offering large format scanning are generally using roller fed scanners which are fine for flat plans and other smooth items, but pretty deadly for anything with a thick or uneven surface. And that includes Tipex, PrittStick, Sellotape and Bluetak — all those things we used to use all the time in the cut and paste of the copy shop. Then there’s thick artwork on board, mounted canvas, and anything that will stick, slide or skid. Even the best roll fed scanners will not cope. So if you want to offer the service to these more creative customers, you will need to use a flatbed and scan in sections. The sections can be pieced together manually in Photoshop, or using specialist stitching software, which a lot of

v i v i d.

people favour for ease of use. I have been using Arcsoft’s Scan-n-Stitch to compare and it is both inexpensive and easy to use. That’s important if it is a service you can offer on a regular basis rather than relying on a specialist member of staff to operate it. It’s important that the scans are regular, kept in straight lines, and with some overlap — about twenty per cent — to allow the blending of the image. The software can cope with up to ten individual scans, so in theory an A1 size original can be done on an A4 flatbed, though this is quite ambitious and I would recommend practising with something more simple until you get used to it. However clever, you still need a human eye to oversee the results just in case something is misplaced. It’s a bit like the OCR software that reads words, and sometimes replaces letters with the wrong one. It’s always worth checking. One thing that throws it is any perspective distortion like that found in photographs where a wide angle lens has been used, or the shooting position moved. Again, it’s important that images to be stitched are as regular as possible. If there is lens distortion, then it is probably better to go back to manual manipulation in Photoshop using layers, and if you missed last month’s instalment, the trick is to use a combination of layer properties to help blend the image together. If you have more than two images to stitch together, I would recommend doing two at a time, and getting them straight, before juggling with three or four in the same window. Give yourself plenty of canvas size around the edges so you can see all the image. Using the opacity of the top layer will allow you to see how it aligns with the image underneath, though depending on how busy the detail is, this can look quite confusing. Try using ’difference’ in the options, and this will compare the pixels in adjoining layers. An accurate match will appear black, anything else will be highlighted. This is very handy for getting a close match before you do any fine tuning. The biggest cause of headache is usually trying to stitch if the images are not completely straight with each other, so it’s better to spend a little more time on the scanner getting it right rather than a lot more frustrating time in Photoshop. As with everything, practise makes perfect. Of course there is one very good alternative to a scanner. It’s called a camera. More of that next month. www.arcsoft.com

Fujifilm’s donation to WaterAid FUJIIFLM annouces that it has raised €65,025 in the first 12 months of its initiative with WaterAid, the international charity dedicated to enabling the world’s poorest communities to access safe water and sanitation. The result is more than double the original target of €30,000 due to the growing success and popularity of Fujifilm’s Brillia HD PRO-T3 plates. As part of a continued drive to be as sustainable as possible, and support sustainability in the efforts of others, Fujifilm has been donating a percentage of the sales of every square metre of Brillia HD PRO-T3 plates sold in Europe, Middle East and Africa over the last 12 months. The nominated charity was WaterAid, to reflect the fact that PRO-T3 completely eliminates the water used in the conventional plate production process.

Through its donations, Fujifilm has been able to help WaterAid transform the lives of people in some of the world’s poorest communities by providing access to safe, clean water, sanitation and hygiene . As part of its global reach, WaterAid has an active role in 19 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, working with local communities to set up practical and sustainable solutions that meet their needs. Susie Kennedy, corporate account manager at WaterAid, said: “We‘re delighted with the results achieved by Fujifilm over the last 12 months. The company‘s dedication and commitment to their fundraising means that WaterAid is able to transform even more lives and we look forward to continuing this fantastic partnersip.” Yasufumi Morimoto, senior vice president, FUJIFILM Europe GmbH,

comments: “Back in May 2012 we set €30,000 as our 12 month target, so the fact that we’ve raised over €65,025 is an overwhelmingly positive result.” He adds: “We’re delighted that the success of PRO-T3 has also meant that we’ve been able to help WaterAid open up a better

standard of living to some of the world’s less privileged communities.” For more information about Fujifilm visit www.fujifilm.eu/eu/ products/graphic-systems/, www.youtube.com/ FujifilmGSEurope or follow @FujifilmPrintEU

New Cyclus Campaign for Recycled Paper ARJOWIGGINS Graphic is encouraging people to share their attitudes as part of the latest Cyclus campaign. Through a series of mailers, e-blasts and a designated Facebook group the campaign will help secure clean drinking water for 3,000 people in the village of Dafra, Burkina Faso, Africa in partnership with SOS Children’s Villages, France. The mailers, which double up as hangers, feature a series of bright and colourful designs that direct people to the Facebook group: facebook.com/cycluspaper. With the tagline: ‘Attitude alone is nothing. Sharing it is everything’, Facebook users will be encouraged to share their thoughts and feelings to illustrate that attitudes can play a central role in supporting the environment. Antalis, a distributor for Cyclus in the UK, is supporting the campaign and at the end of every month (July to October) SOS Children’s Villages France will choose the five most creative attitudes uploaded onto Facebook and award these winning entries with 500kg of Cyclus 100% recycled paper for their

next pro bono charity project or to donate to their chosen charity. Marian Thomasson, Marketing Communications Manager at Antalis explains: “By launching in the UN’s Year of Water Cooperation, the campaign aims to showcase the need for people to use paper that demonstrates the right attitude to the environment. Cyclus is committed to using the minimum of water (two times less water than used for the production of non recycled paper) without compromising on paper quality, which is good for the environment and for business. This campaign will help demonstrate that the choice of paper can have more of an impact on the environment than is often acknowledged.” Angela De Vorchik, Operational Marketing Manager for Arjowiggins Graphic said: “We want to show that attitudes can really make a difference in the world. 783 million people are still without access to drinking water, but by sharing your attitude we can begin to make a difference in a small way to help overcome this global challenge. Uploading attitudes on the Facebook group will trigger our donation to SOS Children’s Villages, France. This will help support 3000 people in Dafra to have access to clean drinking water.” Visit Arjowiggins Graphic: www.recycled-papers.co.uk; SOS children’s village, www.sos-childrensvillages.org; Antalis, www.antalis.co.uk

TEN TOP TIPS: Preparing your artwork correctly for print There are many misconceptions that what you see on your screen will print as you expect…but will it? The Magazine Production Company have compiled a top ten list to ensure your work is printed correctly. 1. WORK BACKWARDS

To make the best out of the end results, call your printer for advice and how to best prepare your files. If it’s too complicated, seek the professional service of a designer. The small cost spent here could save you time, money and offer better results.

2. FILE FORMATS

There are many file formats available to you such as EPS, TIF, JPG, PNG, PSD, AI, BMP, PDF, blah blah blah…but do you know which is best to use for print? Generally speaking, if you can export a high resolution PDF file from the program you are working in, then this should cover it. If not, call your copy or print centre for advice.

3. DPI OR PPI

Many people are often misled with the term DPI to relate to resolution on computer or input devices (such as digital cameras). Images should be referred to as PPI (Pixels Per Inch). DPI refers to the Dots Per Inch on output devices such as printers.

4. RESOLUTION

This is one of the biggest problems. Your image may look fine on screen but the resolution of the image may not. Screen resolutions can generally range anywhere from 72 to 220ppi. For print, the image needs to be at 300ppi at the size you want to print at. If the image looks blurry when you start to zoom in then it is sure to be blurry when it is printed. As a rule of thumb: if a JPG file memory size is under 250k then this may not be sufficient for print; 251k-1Mb then the file may be suitable for print up to A5; over 1Mb then there may be a good chance it is suitable to print out up to A4.

5. COLOUR MODE

All images are captured using RGB (Red, Green, Blue) but the majority of printing devices use CMYK (Cyan, Yellow, Magenta and Black (K)). Ideally you should convert the images to the colour mode of the output device. You can then also see how the colour will behave using that output process and be able to make allowances.

6. TRUE BLACK

Converting RGB to Black – well not much can be done but heavy blacks can look nasty in print especially when there are thin white fonts or white lines. If creating artwork from scratch, the best colour value is C30, Y30, M30, K100. This will ensure a nice deep black and maintain reversed white text and lines.

7. ADD BLEED

Bleed is an area around the document where images running up to the edge of the document must exceed this point to avoid white-lining and to allow paper movement when the document is trimmed. The bleed is usually an additional 3mm from each of the outer edges of the document or artwork. Generally you should apply 3mm on all artwork as a safeguard.

8. TRIM MARKS

Trim marks serve as two purposes: to allow for accurate positioning; and accurate trimming. These can be automatically added when you export the document as a PDF for commercial printing. This depends on the program you are using.

9. CALIBRATE YOUR SCREENS

You should never assume the colours you see on your screen will replicate accurately when it is printed. On an uncalibrated screen your job could print darker/lighter warmer/colder than you expect. To minimise colour accuracy issues, ensure your monitor is calibrated before you start your job. If you are after a particular colour, then call your copy centre or printer for advice before you start your job.

10. SPEND THE TIME TO SOURCE THE RIGHT IMAGES

If you used images downloaded from websites then there is a very good chance it will be blurry when it’s printed. Time spent on sourcing the right images at the right resolution, whilst keeping to our tips offered here, will do wonders for any document you want to print. Hiring a designer can take a lot of the headache away to ensure the best results are achieved, after all, the printer or copy centre can only print what you give them.

QUICK PRINT JOKES The guy who fell into the machine at the furniture upholstery centre is expected to be fully recovered soon. How many politicians does it take to change a light bulb? They’d rather you were in the dark. My mate is in love with two schoolbags. He’s bisatchel. What do you call a knight who makes pottery? Sir Amic I went to the doctor because my neck ached when I wore shirts. He said it was cholera. What do you call a woman with a pint on her head? Beatrix. I met the person who invented crosswords. I can’t remember their name but I think it was P something T something R. I went to buy a new food processor and asked at the store if they could sell me a really good one. The salesman said ‘Kenwood?’ And I asked where he was. A Buddhist monk refused a local anaesthetic at the dentist’s because he said he wanted to ‘transcend dental medication’.

YOUR JOKES ON US! We may have had a version of this next one sent in before, but hey, it tickled Maureen, so it’s in again. Please send in your jokes, old and new to share a laugh with your quick print industry work mates. One day we will publish a book of the ones Maureen would not allow to be shown…

GONE CANVASSING Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson went on a camping trip. After a good meal and a bottle of wine, they lay down for the night, and went to sleep. Some hours later, Holmes awoke and nudged his faithful friend. “Watson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see.” Watson replied, “I see millions and millions of stars.” “What does that tell you?” Holmes asked. Watson pondered for a minute. “Astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo. Horologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three. Theologically, I can see that God is all-powerful and that we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What does it tell you?” Holmes was silent for a minute, then spoke. “Watson, you idiot. Somebody has stolen our tent!”

GET IT OUT IN THE OPEN A husband and wife were at a party chatting with some friends when the subject of marriage counselling came up. “Oh! We’ll never need that. My husband and I have a great relationship,” the wife explained. “He was a communications major in college, and I majored in theatre arts. He communicates really well, and I just act like I’m listening.”

KNOCK KNOCK A very well-known international furniture and interior decoration D.I.Y. store recently set up a customer assistance department. The first call they got was from a lady who had purchased a wardrobe early in the morning. She explained that after assembly the wardrobe had crumbled three times when the public transport bus passed in front of her house. The store sent a technician over to her place. He reassembled the wardrobe … which was in the hall on the second floor … and then went into it to observe what would happen when the bus, which was due a few minutes later, went by. The phone rang just then and the lady went downstairs to take the call. Just then her husband came home from work with a terrible flu condition. Hearing his wife on the phone he trudged upstairs where he found the wardrobe; on opening one of the doors and seeing the man inside he exclaimed “What the dickens are you doing in there?” To which the guy replied, “I know you’ll never believe this, but I’m waiting for the bus!!”

WHO SENT THIS IN? Two weevils grew up in Cornwall. One went to Hollywood and became a famous actor. The other stayed behind, sold copiers and never amounted to much. The second one, naturally, became known as the lesser of the two weevils.

JAPANESE BANKING CRISIS THE LIST SO FAR The Japanese banking crisis shows no signs of letting up. Origami Bank has folded, Sumo Bank has gone belly up and Bonsai Bank plans to cut back some of it’s branches. Karaoke Bank is up for sale and is going for a song. Meanwhile, shares in Kamikaze Bank have nose-dived and 500 back office staff at Karate Bank got the chop. Analysts report that there is something fishy going on at Sushi Bank and staff there fear they may get a raw deal.

USEFUL DEFINITIONS IN PRINT FINE…This is the word women use to end an argument when they feel they are right and you need to shut up. Never use “fine” to describe how a woman looks … this will cause you to have one of those arguments. FIVE MINUTES…This is half an hour. It is equivalent to the five minutes that your football game is going to last before you take out the trash, so it’s an even trade. NOTHING…This means “something,” and you should be on your toes. “Nothing” is usually used to describe the feeling a woman has of wanting to turn you inside out, upside down, and backwards. “Nothing” usually signifies an argument that will last “Five Minutes” and end with “Fine” GO AHEAD (With Raised Eyebrows) …This is a dare. One that will result in a woman getting upset over “Nothing” and will end with the word “Fine” GO AHEAD (Normal Eyebrows)… This means “I give up” or “do what you want because I don’t care” You will get a “Raised Eyebrow Go Ahead” in just a few minutes, followed by “Nothing” and “Fine” and she will talk to you in about “Five Minutes” when she cools off. LOUD SIGH…This is not actually a word, but is a non-verbal statement often misunderstood by men. A “Loud Sigh” means she thinks you are an idiot at that moment, and wonders why she is wasting her time standing here and arguing with you over “Nothing” SOFT SIGH…Again, not a word, but a non-verbal statement. “Soft Sighs” mean that she is content. Your best bet is to not move or breathe, and she will stay content. THAT’S OKAY…This is one of the most dangerous statements that a woman can make to a man. “That’s Okay,” means that she wants to think long and hard before paying you back for whatever it is that you have done. “That’s Okay” is often used with the word “Fine” and in conjunction with a “Raised Eyebrow.” GO AHEAD! …At some point in the near future, you are going to be in some mighty big trouble. PLEASE DO …This is not a statement, it is an offer. A woman is giving you the chance to come up with whatever excuse or reason you have for doing whatever it is that you have done. You have a fair chance with the truth, so be careful and you shouldn’t get a “That’s Okay” THANKS …A woman is thanking you. Do not faint. Just say you’re welcome. THANKS A LOT …This is much different from “Thanks.” A woman

will say, “Thanks A Lot” when she is really ticked off at you. It signifies that you have offended her in some callous way, and will be followed by the “Loud Sigh.” Be careful not to ask what is wrong after the “Loud Sigh,” as she will only tell you “Nothing”

DRUM ROLL PLEASE... Police were called to a Pizza Hut in Blackpool at the weekend, after the body of a worker was found covered in mushrooms, onions, ham and cheese. A police spokesman said that the cause of death had not been established but there was a strong possibility that the man had topped himself.

TAKE THIS PROOF READING CHALLENGE Only send to print if you are happy with the facts as well as the spelling. SENT IN FROM A SALESWOMAN... Men Are Like…Bank Accounts… Without a lot of money, they don’t generate much interest. …Blenders…You need one, but you’re not quite sure why. …Chocolate Bars… Sweet, smooth, and they usually head right for your hips. …Coffee… The best ones are rich, warm, and can keep you up all night long. …Commercials… You can’t believe a word they say. …Computers… Hard to figure out and never have enough memory. …Coolers… Load them with beer and you can take them anywhere. …Copiers… You need them for reproduction, but that’s about it. …Curling Irons… They’re always hot, and they’re always in your hair. …Government Bonds… They take so long to mature. …Horoscopes… They always tell you what to do and are usually wrong. …Lava Lamps… Fun to look at, but not all that bright. …Mascara… They usually run at the first sign of emotion. …Parking Spots… The good ones are already taken and the ones that are left are either handicapped or extremely small. …Popcorn… They satisfy you, but only for a little while. …Come on chaps, surely we have a right of reply?

JOKE SENT IN FROM TRANSYLVANIAN PRINT SHOP One night Dracula is walking down the street when suddenly 10 tons of smoked salmon sandwiches, bridge rolls, pitted olives, chicken wings, chipolatas, tomato salad, pizza slices and crisps descends on him from a great height and knocks him to the ground. ‘Oh no!’ he gasps with his dying breath…it’s Buffet the Vampire Slayer!’

A couple are sitting in the garden sipping wine.

TOO FUNNY – SCARY HOW TRUE IT IS!!! If my body was a car, this is the time I would be thinking about trading it in for a newer model. I’ve got bumps and dents and scratches in my finish and my paint job is getting a little dull...but that’s not the worst of it. My headlights are out of focus, and it’s especially hard to see things up close. My traction is not as graceful as it once was. I slip and slide and skid and bump into things even in the best of weather. My whitewalls are stained with varicose veins It takes me hours to reach my maximum speed. My fuel rate burns inefficiently. But here’s the worst of it. Almost every time I sneeze, cough or sputter, either my radiator leaks or my exhaust backfires!

HOW MANY DOGS DOES IT TAKE TO CHANGE A LIGHT BULB? Golden Retriever: The sun is shining, the day is young, we’ve got our whole lives ahead of us, and you’re inside worrying about a stupid burned-out light bulb? Border Collie: Just one. And I’ll replace any wiring that’s not up to code. Dachshund: I can’t reach the stupid light! Toy Poodle: I’ll just blow in the Border Collie’s ear and he’ll do it. By the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will be dry. Rottweiler: Go Ahead! Make me! Shi-tzu: Puh-leeze, dah-ling. Let the servants. Labrador: Oh, me, me!!! Pleeze let me change the light bulb! Can I? Can I? Huh? Huh? Can I? Malamute: Let the Border Collie do it. You can feed me while he’s busy. Cocker Spaniel: Why change it? I can still pee on the carpet in the dark. Doberman Pinscher: While it’s dark, I’m going to sleep on the couch. Mastiff: Mastiffs are NOT afraid of the dark. Hound Dog: Zzzzz

The wife says, “I love you.”

Chihuahua: Yo quiero Taco Bulb. Irish Wolfhound: Can somebody else do it? I’ve got a hangover. Pointer: I see it, there it is, right there... Greyhound: It isn’t moving. Who cares? Australian Shepherd: Put all the light bulbs in a little circle... Old English Sheep Dog: Light bulb? Light bulb? That thing I just ate was a light bulb?

MR AND MRS COPY SHOP IN RETIREMENT A little old couple walked slowly into McDonalds one cold winter evening. They looked out of place amid the young families and young couples eating there that night. Some of the customers looked admiringly at them. You could tell what the admirers were thinking. ‘Look, there is a couple who has been through a lot together, probably for 60 years or more! The little old man walked right up to the cash register, placed his order with no hesitation and then paid for their meal. The couple took a table near the back wall and started taking food off of the tray. There was one hamburger, one order of French fries and one drink. The old man unwrapped the plain hamburger and carefully cut it in half. He placed one half in front of his wife. Then he carefully counted out the French fries, divided them in two piles and neatly placed one pile in front of his wife. He took a sip of the drink; his wife took a sip and then set the cup down between them. As the man began to eat his few bites of hamburger the crowd began to get restless. Again you could tell what they were thinking. ‘That poor old couple. All they can afford is one meal for the two of them.’ As the man began to eat his French fries one young man stood and came over to the old couples’ table. He politely offered to buy another meal for the old couple to eat. The old man replied that they were just fine. They were used to sharing everything.

The husband says, “Is that you or the wine talking?”

Then the crowd noticed that the little old lady hadn’t eaten a bite. She just sat there watching her husband eat and occasionally taking turns sipping the drink. Again the young man came over and begged them to let him buy them something to eat. This time the lady explained that no, they were used to sharing everything together. As the little old man finished eating and was wiping his face neatly with a napkin the young man could stand it no longer. Again he came over to their table and offered to buy some food. After being politely refused again he finally asked a question of the little old lady. ‘Ma’am, why aren’t you eating. You said that you share everything. What is it that you are waiting for?’ She answered... the teeth.

PULL THE OTHER ONE SALES TRAINING An old man went to the doctor complaining of a terrible pain in his leg. “I am afraid it’s just old age”, replied the doctor, “there is nothing we can do about it.” “That can’t be” fumed the old man, “you don’t know what you are doing.” “How can you possibly know I am wrong?” countered the doctor. “Well it’s quite obvious,” the old man replied, “my other leg is fine, and it’s the exact same age!”

STOP PRESS… How many printers does it take to screw-in a light bulb?…8! 1 to hold the bulb and 7 to drink until the room spins. An RGB walks into a CMYK bar Bartender says, “Hey, aren’t you out of gamut?” Printers know how to ‘do it’ between the sheets. Why did the printer forget to say goodbye to his wife? He was pressed for time. What type of hunting do printers prefer? Trapping. What did the typographer say to the printer who wouldn’t stop talking? “Get to the point.”

The wife replies, “It’s me, talking to the wine.”
