According to Mrs Colourfast, our Harrier trip to Devon has been our best vacation for some time. September is a good month for planning to the year end and beyond. Meeting Julian Marsh has inspired us to offer more. Your new opportunities in print start on page 26. Whilst on the road we met up with Tony Hills from UMG in Newton Abbot who was installing some of the fastest finishing kit in the west. Not even Maureen plumped for the Beef and Otter Pie although we soon found out the Otter was the local beer, very good it is too. More road trips being planned and of course The Print Show in October, page 18, London Calling in November, page 20 and a host of other events on page 17. It’s so good to be out and about in print. Peter, take in a show, Foulkes

Route 1 Print takes on 100,000 sq ft Production Hub ROUTE 1 Print has just moved to a brand new 100,000 square foot production hub in Manvers, Rotherham. It’s an exciting step for the trade print supplier, who is currently the third fastest growing print company in the UK. The move comes on the back of strong performance with the brand averaging growth of 37% per quarter and is part of an on-going £9million investment programme. Founded in 2012, Route 1 specialises in high quality, low cost print for trade resellers such as graphic designers, marketing agencies and copy shops. Route 1 Print is the flagship brand of Bluetree Design and Print which is forecast to turnover £24million this year. In the past two years, the company has created 100 jobs, and it plans to create another 60 in the coming months. Not only will the Manvers move accommodate the expansion in employees, it will also provide Route 1 with the opportunity to house some exceptional new machinery- namely in the shape of the Heidelberg 8 Colour B1 Perfector. Dubbed ‘the pinnacle of print’, the B1 Perfector has in press colour control and quick make ready speeds, making light work of lithographic jobs such as large poster and leaflet runs. According to channel manager Jack Wilmott, the B1 Perfector has always been the plan for Route 1: ‘We always had ambitions to own a B1 lpress; we just never had the capacity for one before. Thanks to the substantial growth we’ve experienced in the last couple of years, we’re now in a position to run one.’ Jack continues, ‘It’s an incredible piece of equipment. We’re not only impressed with the standard of work it produces, we’re also excited about its make-ready speeds, which will allow us to get the work from pre-press to our finishing department a lot quicker. This ultimately means a

faster turn-around for our customers, but without sacrificing the quality.’ With this new machinery and a new large-scale site, Route One are now in a firm position to serve a much stronger demand — a great feat for a company who started out by selling print on ebay. Over the next few months they are hoping to gain more coverage in the flyer market as well as expanding their core group of high quality print items such as booklets and business cards. Alongside this, Route 1 is now working to significantly develop its website to include new account features and supporting materials, something that will no doubt make the buying process that much better. ‘We’re really excited about the future’, Jack adds. ‘Our success up until now has really been based on our technical capabilities combined with what we feel is a very warm, open and honest approach to customer service. ‘Now we have the machinery and floor-space

to cope with the growth, we are confident that — paired with our existing strength — we can build a dependable and unique online buying service, and deliver to our customers the help and resources needed to make their print selling businesses a huge success.’ www.route1print.co.uk

John Brailsford adds Matrix Duplex “TRANSFORMED”, that’s how John Brailsford, Director of John Brailsford Printers, Rotherham, describes his business following the purchase of a new Matrix Duplex Pneumatic double-sided B2 laminator last month.

implications of the digital film for laminating digital print from our Xerox presses made the process uneconomical on longer runs. With the MX-530DP, a 2000 run just seems like a short sprint and the job’s done. We did look at other systems but for value the Matrix just can’t be beat. Vivid also offered me a great trade-in price on our original Matrix” says Brailsford.

PRODUCTION TIME ‘HALVED’ The new Matrix Duplex System, designed and manufactured by Leicestershire-based Vivid Laminating Technologies, replaces an older Matrix but is much more than a simple substitute. The new system can laminate both sides in one pass, so halving production time.

FILM COSTS NOW 70% LESS “With our new Matrix Duplex, we can switch from single to double-sided laminating in just a few minutes” said John “The pneumatic roller pressure allows us to use standard OPP film, even with heavy coverage digital print so the savings are enormous, at around 70% less than using our previous digital film laminator”

NEW ‘BOSS’ FOILING & SPOT UV FILMS The Matrix brings SRA3 and B2 matt, gloss and soft touch lamination in-house and speeds up the turnaround against outside sourcing for Brailsfords. The system can produce 100 SRA3 sheets in around five minutes for a film cost of £16 per 1000 sheets.

A 2000 RUN JUST SEEMS LIKE A SHORT SPRINT “Our first Matrix was great but the cost

Lewis Evans, Product Manager at Vivid, said “John Brailsford Printers is a perfect example of a company that can expand using our Matrix range of systems by bringing laminating in-house, adding revenue and speeding up the entire lamination process, whilst benefitting from a great return on investment. Our new range of Boss Foiling and Spot UV films will be added to John’s Matrix next month to further enhance the added value that this unique system can offer”. Kili Arts brings photos to life on metal with Epson KILI Arts has installed an Epson SureColor SC-F6000 44 inch digital dye sublimation printer to produce its new range of high quality ChromaLuxe photographic prints. The company has owned an Epson Stylus Pro 9890 44 inch large format printer for two years, which it uses to print its fine art, photographic, canvasses and Giclee prints. This latest SureColor investment has enabled Kili Arts to expand its product range into metal HD prints, which has resulted in a significant increase in production and overall profit of 60% since installation earlier this year. Specialising in bespoke large format printing and framing, Slough based Kili Arts produces acrylic and canvas prints, Gicleé Fine Art prints, metal HD prints, multi canvasses and collages, and also offers custom-made cut mount, framing and lamination services. The company is owned by East West Photography Ltd an Asian wedding and events photography company founded in 2001 by Gurwinder Singh Soor and Jagdeep Singh Panesar. It is through the photographic side of the business that Kili Arts has developed. Photographer and Director, Jagdeep Panesar says: “We used external suppliers for all East West Photography’s printing needs for a number of years but were often disappointed with the inconsistent results. We are extremely passionate about delivering the highest quality service to our clients so we reviewed our options and that’s where the idea of starting up our own printing side of the business came from.” The company purchased its first large format printer – an Epson Stylus Pro 9890 in 2013 to print its clients’ photographs onto fine art paper and canvasses. It was a visit to Photokina in 2014, where they saw the Epson SureColor SC-F6000 dye sublimation roll-fed printer demonstrated printing onto ChromaLuxe metal panels that persuaded them to look at further investment in the print business. Jagdeep says: “Epson were printing images on the SureColor SC-F6000 dye sub printer that were then infused directly into the ChromaLuxe specially coated sheets of metal to create the most vibrant and stunning photographic prints. The detail and resolution was exceptional and we could see that our images would be perfect for such an application. We were convinced it was something that our customers would be enthusiastic about.” Kili Arts bought its SureColor SC-F6000 from large format print solutions specialists and approved Epson reseller Perfect Colours in January 2015. “Perfect Colours were great,” says Jagdeep. “They gave us a lot of advice and support and handled everything before, during and after installation. Their training, support and aftercare is invaluable.” Durable and robust, the SureColor SC-F6000 is ideal for low to medium volume work and has been developed to support an extensive range of applications such as soft signage, interior décor, textile and garment printing. It offers a low total cost of ownership and, with every component designed and manufactured by Epson, quality, performance and reliability are all

optimised for maximum productive uptime and profit. The company also invested in a Sefa 1510 heat press to print onto ChromaLuxe metal panels. Jagdeep says: “We started off printing small 6 x 4-inch prints at first and sent them out to our clients as gifts. They loved them and were blown away by the colour quality and detail.” Shortly after, the orders started coming in for larger sizes and the business took off. Jagdeep says: “The printer installation went very smoothly. The SureColor SC-F6000 is exceptionally easy to use, with fast media loading and easy setup and has proved to be an extremely reliable piece of kit. We can’t fault it.” Kili Arts has recently been commissioned by local schools to produce new imagery for its healthy eating campaign — images have been printed onto 60 x 40-inch metal panels using the SureColor SC-F6000. Jagdeep says: “We took in a few sample panels to show the print quality. When the schools saw the exceptional colour and the sharp detail of the images and realised how long lasting and durable the prints would be, they asked us to replace all the original canvasses which were poor quality and faded.” Although still early days, Jagdeep is delighted with the SureColor SC-F6000: “This investment has opened up a whole new creative market for us — not just new business, it has also enabled us to expand our service offering to our wedding and event photography clients to give them a truly bespoke service. I’m certain we couldn’t have progressed the print business in such a short space of time without the SureColor SC-F6000 dye sub printer – we wouldn’t be without it.” With an eye to the future, Kili Arts is looking to expand its service to offer customised textile printing with items such as t-shirts, bags, promotional products and interior décor items, to the consumer and commercial markets. www.kiliarts.co.uk

EXCLUSIVE UK and Irish Mimaki distributor, Hybrid Services Ltd has announced attractive new pricing for its JV400 range of SUV and Latex wide format inkjet printers. The multi-award winning product ranges offer unique opportunities for print companies with their distinctive ink technologies delivering substantial benefits. Both printers are available in 1.3m and 1.6m widths and will be priced at £12,995 for the smaller and £13,995 for the larger options. John de la Roche; National Sales Manager – sign and graphics for Hybrid, explains the move. “These two product lines deliver significant benefits for printers with specific requirements and this attractive new price point should bring them within reach of an even wider audience,” he remarks. “The creative and business advantages of both the SUV and Latex mean printers can break into new markets, offer new products and improve processes dramatically.” The Mimaki Latex printer is unique in offering

orange, green and white ink in addition to a vibrant process colour inkset, enabling clear media to be printed to with an extended colour gamut thanks to the addition of the extra colours. With quick drying, zero-odour inks that cure at significantly lower temperatures than alternatives, a broader range of materials can be printed to and at lower running costs thanks to the reduced power requirements. Mimaki’s SUV blends the benefits of solvent and UV curing ink to deliver a print that is glossy, instantly dry and incredibly hard wearing. “The SUV offers big process gains for printers seeking a fast turnaround,” says de la Roche. “The ability to pack and send work immediately after it has been printed delivers new opportunities for businesses to respond rapidly to customer requests.” With a uniquely high gloss, scratch resistant finish, output

This flyer 122,000 £750 MILLION sets out detailed information on the structure of our industry £6.1 BILLION 8,600 by region and product, as well as covering its economic importance and its productivity. It also highlights the effectiveness and sustainability of print as a modern communications medium. They have produced this flyer as part of their on-going programme of representational activity directed toward influencing government agencies and other organisations whose decisions impact on member companies’ interests. As with Priorities for Print – the lobbying document previously published, UK printing – the facts and figures will be used to educate politicians, parliamentarians and public servants about the vital role print plays in today’s economy. 88% Success in latest Anti-Greenwash Initiative TWO Sides, the global initiative to promote the sustainability of print and paper, has announced an 88% success in its latest campaign to tackle the use of greenwash among UK corporations. Since May this year, Two Sides has identified and challenged 25 well known organisations for making inaccurate and misleading environmental statements to their customers to encourage them to go paperless. To date, 22 of those companies approached by Two Sides have agreed to remove their offending claims.

The latest results build on an earlier campaign in 2012 when 68 out of 83 organisations changed their marketing messages after being similarly contacted by Two Sides. The link between reducing the use of print and paper and helping the environment creates a false impression about its sustainability. Paper is a renewable and recyclable product that, when responsibly managed, is an environmentally sustainable media. In Europe, the area of forest cover has grown by 30% since 1950 and has been increasing at a rate of 1.5 million football pitches every year.

The belief that e-communication is more environmentally-friendly than print is generally unproven, with a distinct lack of life cycle data to support such claims, especially in light of the increasing energy requirements needed to support the growing network of worldwide digital servers. While recognised as efficient, digital communication and data storage is not necessarily more sustainable. In the UK alone, it has been suggested that PCs and servers could consume up to 50% of the country’s energy requirements over the next 10 years. www.twosides.info

Another record year for the Print Futures Awards THE 2015 Print Futures Awards received a record 80 entries and the 37 winners, the highest number since the Awards were launched in 2003, received their cheques at The Printing Charity’s industry event kindly hosted by Baroness Dean of Thornton-le-Fylde at the House of Lords on 23 July. This year’s winners are: Kemi Alemoru, Scott Anderson, Christian Byron, Thomas Cert, Lucy Chapman, Liam Coleman, Kiel Cormack, Conor Crozier, Sarah Daniel, Melanie Edwards, Cristina Garriga, Bethany Gault, Robyn Glendinning, Alex Howell, Emily Hoyland, Sarah Kelly, Corin Kennington, Rebecca King, Emmanuella Kwenortey, Amy Lambert, Isabel Lea, Annalise Lewis, Lisa Matzi, Elena Mourdjis, Rowan Powell, Helen Rabbitte, Charlotte Ross, Jennicka Sapigao, Lia Sher-Gill, Diana Tulkina, Natasha Turner, Elizabeth Underhill, Samuel Walter, Sherrie-Leigh Webb, Charlotte Whistlecroft, Victoria Willmott, and Karl Yeboah. The Print Futures Awards are grants of up to £1,500 each to help people aged 16 to 30 years pay for any costs associated with relevant training courses for a career in printing, publishing or graphic arts. Stephen Gilbert, The Printing Charity’s Chief Executive, said at the event: “As one of the judges for the Awards, I am always inspired by the applicants’ enthusiasm for the industry they are joining. “Next year I would like to see more young people applying who already work in the industry and want to undertake further training to develop their skills, including apprenticeships and NVQs. The Print Futures Awards have a

vital role to play helping to train the new generation entering our industry.” The Print Futures Awards are sponsored by The Printing Charity, the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF), St Bride Foundation, The John Crosfield Foundation, and Unite the Union GPM Sector. Entries open in January each year and the Awards are presented in July. See www.printfuturesawards.com

Abacus welcomes Linoprint CV technology ABACUS Print’s third generation digital press will be a Linoprint CV from Heidelberg. “We are impressed with the white and clear toner options which will allow us to add value to jobs to enable us to increase our margins. The overall quality is exceptional and gives a litho-like feel to work. Another big attraction is the ability to print on longer 700mm sheets which opens up the opportunity for producing presentation folders, 6pp A4 or landscape A4 brochures. This will pull some work away from litho and will not only be of interest to existing clients but also open up new markets for us,” says Jonathan Luck, managing director. The company handles a high volume of trade work for printers and also design agencies. It believes that the agencies will create products around the opportunities this latest generation of press brings to the market. Much of its work is confidential and for this reason handles all work

in-house with extensive finishing options. In addition to digital, Abacus runs B3 Heidelberg Printmaster presses but does not see litho disappearing. “We’ll always have litho because it can handle some jobs, such as high volume NCR work, that still can’t be cost effectively produced digitally. However, the focus of our investment at the moment is digital, both commercial and wide format,” says Akshay Barot. The Linoprint CV will work variable shifts, typically over 12 hours a day. The company will have staff trained on site to familiarise them with the Fiery RIP and other features of the press. Heidelberg includes the Operator Replaceable Components within its click charge and it does not have any minimum volume thresholds. A printer pays only for the volume produced. Heidelberg has worked in partnership with Ricoh for four years and in that time it has seen

digital quality improve and specialist options that were seen as the prerogative of the highest cost machines migrate down to these more affordable mid range models. “We believe when selling to the trade, having the Heidelberg brand speaks volumes. It will help give our customers the confidence that we will achieve the quality of print and service expected in today’s competitive and demanding environment. We like the support and security of dealing with Heidelberg,” says Jonathan Luck. www.heidelberg.com/english

Thrive with Five: Xerox Prints More Colours

HOW do you make a digital production colour platform even better? Add a fifth colour option, boost press uptime and offer multiple speed choices — the calling cards of the new Xerox iGen 5 Press. Thousands of iGen presses are already creating billions of high quality, high margin sales brochures, posters, photo books and pieces of direct-mail – often personalised and always in vibrant colour. With the iGen platform, productivity gains of up to 25 per cent can be achieved since less time is spent on reprinting, quality control and job setup, and now there’s another option to continue that momentum. “We launched a digital colour revolution when we introduced the iGen platform in 2002,” said Andrew Copley, president, Global Graphic Communications Operations, Xerox Technology.

“And we continue to anticipate change and respond with new ways to convert pages from offset. The iGen 5 is fully customisable to meet page volume, application type and colour needs – all while delivering market-leading press uptime.” The optional fifth colour unit increases the ability to match a larger gamut of http://www.pantone. com/pages/pantone/index.aspxPantone colours or unknown spot colours without hindering productivity. Orange, green or blue options supplement CMYK and can accurately hit distinctive brand colours without moving short runs to offset. A variety of colour matching, job setup and quality control automation tools ensure maximum uptime equating to more profitable pages flowing through an operation. Other features include: An EFI Fiery or Xerox FreeFlow Print Server to automate and integrate

the workflow process from order to finish; Standard or matt dry ink options that add to the presses’ ability to create unique and eye-grabbing applications; 660mm sheet size to enable more jobs and applications such as six-panel brochures, gatefold pamphlets, pocket folders and directmail campaigns; 2400 x 2400 dpi imaging system, Object Oriented Halftoning, Xerox Confident Colour and Auto Density Control to deliver reliable and predictable image quality; and a range of inline finishing solutions, including Xerox IntegratedPLUS Finishing and Dual Mode Sheet Feeder to manage jobs with diverse finishing requirements. Exaprint launches Mockup Collection EXAPRINT UK, the online print platform for graphic designers, print professionals and marketing agencies, has launched a ‘Mockup Collection’ to help its resellers showcase to their clients what the finished printed product will look like before it’s even printed. A ‘mockup’ is a high-resolution, fully layered PSD file that allows designers to easily drop their own artwork into a product photo. As an example, Exaprint is offering a mockup for its perfect bound brochures: the picture shows a brochure with a plain cover, sitting on a piece of wood. Simon Cooper, Managing Director of Exaprint UK, said: “The ability to demonstrate how a design will look on a range of products during a pitch and proposal presentation or after a new branding process is invaluable. That’s why we launched our Mockup Collection as a free service to help our resellers win over their customers and hopefully inspire them to see the benefits of a greater range of products than at first envisioned or just to better demonstrate how the new designs will look in situ.” The full collection consists of 160 mockups across all the Exaprint product families, and the distribution of access to these mockups will be based on client status. Exaprint offers a three-tier loyalty scheme. Based on their spending in the previous quarter, clients are awarded a Silver, Gold or Platinum status. The higher the tier, the more benefits are offered. Platinum clients are entitled to download the full Mockup Collection (160 high res files), whilst Gold clients can access 80 and Silver clients 40 mockups. The process of using the mock-ups is very straightforward. The .PSD files have been prepared with Smart Objects, so Exaprint’s resellers just need to drop in their own design, which will then cause the inserted image to appear on the print product, as a representation of how it would appear following actual production. Smart Objects works with Adobe Photoshop CS6 or higher. Simon continued: “Our on-going aim is to help our clients grow their own businesses profitably. As we target resellers, this collection allows them to easily demonstrate the possibility of a product to their own clients, without

the need to create costly proofs or short print runs. The collection helps to reduce incurring unnecessary costs whilst also proving a useful sales tool.” Simon concluded: “Of course, there is also nothing stopping our clients from using our Mockup Collection, with its white label branding, as product images for their own communications. These are 160 great product images – all we’re saying is go out there and take advantage of this new opportunity to grow your business, courtesy of Exaprint!” The Exaprint Mockup Collection is accessible to its existing clients on www.exaprint.co.uk. All quick print pros are welcome to sign up for a (free) account to get instant access to the Mockup Collection.

Quantum Leap for the Image Transfer Process THEMAGICTOUCH, global pioneers of the digital image transfer process, has announced the arrival this month of yet another significant milestone for the garment decoration and promotional gift industry Introducing the new 7.8 version of the existing award winning WoW transfer paper offering improved processing and increased printable product options. Used in conjunction with the TMT/Oki C711WT (colour and white toner) LED printer, WoW7.8 creates a real marketing opportunity for those involved in garment and promotional product decoration. This unique product offers the user the ability to print full colour to almost any fabric or garment regardless of colour or textile composition. This includes cotton, polyester, denim, nylon, softshell, polypongee and most performance fabrics. The process eliminates any “cutting or weeding” requirements and produces detailed designs quickly and economically. Each printer is installed with the new “SpaceControl V3” RIP that enables full management and control on colours, white in particular and is complete with a three year warranty. The new WoW7.8 is available in both the A4 and A4XL sizes offering single designs up to 420mm in length with the ability to

also produce full colour multiple logos per sheet for as little as 20p per transfer, subject to size. This affordable white toner innovation also produces great opacity and a very high ‘white’ factor for non-fabric hard surface applications using the existing CPM transfer paper. These include dark colour mugs, diaries, leather, wood, glass, board, PU surfaces and metals. With over three years experience using white toner technology and over 6000 users in Europe alone TheMagicTouch has proved the best “no risk” option at less than £2000 for those looking to decorate dark garments and promotional products. The WoW process on performance fabrics and garments has proved very successful with application temperatures possible as low as 110°c reducing any garment scorching or heat press marks normally prevalent at higher temperatures. “We supply the printer with an added value beyond the factory standard” says Jim Nicol Managing Director of TheMagicTouch in the UK. He added, “This year we celebrate 25 years of TheMagicTouch and continue to focus on image transfer innovations that are affordable, user friendly and offer the widest printable product range possible. Our continual commitment to R&D enables us to plan the next 25 years with even more vigor and determination. The crusade has only just begun”. IP launches Happy2Print App INTERNATIONAL Paper has launched a new free app across Europe to make printing from mobile devices quick, easy and hassle free. Happy2Print, launched on Google Play and iTunes is compatible with all brands of printer and has been developed to enable consumers to effortlessly print documents and files from their smartphone or tablet. In today’s fast paced digital world, it has become increasingly important for consumers to be able to print from their mobile devices. Previously, the majority of printing apps did not offer consumers a user friendly experience — many were limited to certain printer brands or they cost money to download. International Paper has developed the Happy2Print app to overcome these issues and provide consumers with an easy to use, cost effective printing method. Katarzyna Kozmik, HP Everyday Paper Brand Manager at International Paper, comments: “We are delighted to be launching this app which will enable people to print from their smartphones and tablets. Over the past few years we realised that it was becoming increasingly common for people to be drafting and editing documents and files on mobile devices, however there were very limited means of getting these documents onto paper. Through developing Happy2Print, which is both free and compatible with all printers, we aim to make printing from mobile devices both easy and efficient.” www.ipaper.com

Epson SurePress L-4033 Digital Label EPSON Europe will be celebrating the success of the SurePress L-4033 series of digital label presses at Labelexpo (29th September – 2nd October, Brussels Expo). Since the first press was launched five years ago, over 50 installations have been made across Europe and several companies have already added a second press to expand their digital label production capabilities. The six-colour SurePress L-4033A and sevencolour SurePress L-4033AW are aqueous inkjet label presses and are ideal for the production of high-quality, high-value, short-run labels. These popular presses deliver exceptional print quality on a wide variety of standard label substrates, including clear film and metallic substrates, and without the need for pre-treatments or coatings. Marc Tinkler, Senior Manager, Business Development, Epson Europe, says: “Companies are choosing the SurePress L-4033 because they

want the ability to produce consistently highquality, short-medium volume, labels quickly and cost effectively. Time and time again, we hear from our customers that the reliability of the press is superb — with little or no downtime. Printhead maintenance is automated and ink cartridges can be replaced without stopping the press. What’s particularly good is that this press is opening up new business opportunities and revenue streams for our customers, which is why so many are now installing a second.” The SurePress L-4033AW will be demonstrated at Labelexpo, alongside Epson’s full line-up of label print solutions – ranging from handheld label maker and desktop label printers to high productivity digital label presses. drupa 2016 innovative conference programme

VISITORS to drupa 2016 will experience an exciting new approach to innovation in print when they stop by the drupa cube. This special conference and event programme will feature a wide range of applications for printed products in numerous industries and areas of life. “New technologies like printed electronics and 3D printing, creative multichannel applications and the use of digital printing techniques in packaging and other sectors continue to illustrate the amazing potential of print,” says Sabine Geldermann, director of drupa. “This potential is the focus of drupa cube, with its international conference and event programme. Through an inter-disciplinary approach, it is also designed to bridge the knowledge gap about the relevancy and functionality of print that often exists between printing professionals and their creative agency, marketing, and brand owner clients across a variety of vertical markets.” In contrast to the first two cube conferences in 2008 and 2012, the 11-day programme is not organised by target group but rather, based on six key drupa 2016 themes: Multichannel, Print, Functional Printing, 3D Printing, Package Production, and Green Printing. Each presentation slot will combine various themes using best practise case studies: Functional printing and packaging printing, 3D printing and sustainability, and multichannel including print are some of the combinations being explored. This encourages thinking beyond supposedly fixed boundaries. This outside-the-box principle opens up new possibilities for visitors and broadens the horizon for the future of print. Through its range of themes and its inter-disciplinary concept, drupa cube is, for the first time, also addressing selected vertical markets including the food, consumer goods, interior design, cosmetics, pharmaceutical and healthcare industries; and the financial and public sectors. “In this way, we aim to attract new visitor groups to drupa and inspire them with the possibilities of print,” adds Geldermann. The details of the drupa cube programme are currently being finalised. A provisional programme is expected to be published in autumn at www.drupa. de. Also new at drupa 2016, participation in the cube programme will be free for visitors to drupa, included in the day ticket price of €65 (or €45 for tickets purchased online). www.drupa.de

Konica Minolta at The Print Show

The Print Show has hailed the success of a recent press open day in London, with organisers using the special event to announce that Konica Minolta has signed up to exhibit at the inaugural edition of the show later this year.

applications that we’re going to be announcing to the market at the show.” Martin Hawley, director sheetfed service at Manroland, was also invited to take part in the session, using his appearance to explain the reasons behind the firm’s decision to exhibit at The Print Show. Hawley said: “As we’ve seen, especially in the UK, there has been a demise of industry shows, so it’s really important that the British print industry gets together in one place as a focal point for the event so that they can network. It also gives us the opportunity to give people a visualisation of our new products.”

INCREASING INTEREST FROM THE INDUSTRY

T

AKING PLACE AT Birmingham’s NEC from October 13th to 15th, The Print Show will give manufacturers and suppliers the opportunity to promote their products and solutions to the UK market. With a number of key trade bodies and speakers also due to attend, visitors will be able to quiz some of the industry’s best minds over best business practices and possible diversification opportunities. With the show already generating plenty of talk in all quarters of the industry, this interest is likely to increase further after organisers staged a special open day for members of the trade press and industry organisations at the Aqua restaurant on London’s Regent Street.

COMMITMENT FROM KEY PLAYERS The highlight of the day for many was hearing the news that Konica Minolta has signed up to exhibit at The Print Show joining Morgana, Renz, Route1, Harrier LLC, Intec, OKI, Premier Paper and QPP. Check out the full list at www.theprintshow.co.uk Konica Minolta, the digital print giant, has taken one of the largest stands at the event and will be showcasing a range of technology. Speaking about the news, event director Chris Davies says he is delighted to have secured the signature of another key player in the print market and will now work with the Konica Minolta team to ensure they get the best out of their appearance at the show. “Konica Minolta is not just a name known across

the print world, but also other industries outside of our own market,” Davies said. He added: “Obviously it’s great to have yet another big name commit to the show as this demonstrates just how much such companies think about the event. “If we’re being honest, companies like Konica Minolta wouldn’t be signing up to The Print Show and associating their brands with it if they didn’t think it was relevant or wouldn’t be a success in the current market. We’re delighted to have their support and I’m looking forward to working with them ahead of the show in October.”

COMMITMENT TO THE PRINT SHOW Other highlights on the day included an informative round table debate with various key members of the industry. Chaired by well-known industry expert Catherine Carter, the session addressed the current state of the industry and the impact that The Print Show could have. Gareth Parker, strategic marketing manager for production print at Ricoh, was one key figure to feature at the roundtable. Speaking shortly before the session, he once again reiterated Ricoh’s commitment to The Print Show, explaining that the manufacturer has a number of big plans for the event. Parker said: “The reason why we’re backing The Print show is that it’s a great time for Ricoh in particular, following our New Dawn event last October. What we’re going to be showing on our stand amongst other things will be the Pro C9100 flagship series, the Pro C7100 series and other new

The event attracted interest from all quarters of the print industry; ranging from trade media including Outlook and Digital Printer through to key trade bodies such as the IPIA, BAPC, The Printing Charity, Two Sides/PrintPower, and the BPIF. Amy Hutchinson, marketing director at the BPIF, reiterated the federation’s commitment to The Print Show, praising the organising tram for their work in preparation for this year’s inaugural event. Hutchinson added: “Exhibitions that have relevant stands and engaging content are great for drawing people out of their businesses and getting them networking. They are an excellent way for business to talk to new customers and also reaffirm their relationship with existing customers. “I think the UK printing industry definitely needs an annual show that encourages information sharing and networking. In an industry that is evolving so quickly, I think it’s so important the business keep up to date with the latest trends and technologies. We think it’s really important to facilitate events that will benefit our members and the industry as a whole.” Luke Stoneham, sales manager for The Print Show, was also on hand at the open day to answer visitors’ questions. Reflecting back on the event, he said there was plenty of positivity from those in attendance regarding the show later this year. Stoneham said: “The feedback we got on the day was really positive; everyone I spoke to seemed to be very upbeat about the show and what it will bring to the UK market. Everyone was also very impressed with the fact we have managed to get Konica Minolta on board and believe it will generate a lot of buzz over the next two months or so in the lead up to the event in October.” www.the printshow.co.uk

T THIS SEVENTH year of London Calling, Duplo will be demonstrating how its continual focus on investing in its customer service and support along with the development of next-generation products helps provide customers with integrated solutions and increased profitability. This year’s event has been shaped following extensive discussions, in particular from thoughts and ideas generated at Duplo’s forum earlier this year involving eight customers. Specific feedback included a desire to see a wider range of smaller complementary products and also to create an environment conducive to exchanging ideas and networking. Building on the success of six previous events, Duplo will be inspiring customers through new applications and innovations. Once again, it will be engaging with business partners to demonstrate complete workflows, right through from the paper options and web-to-print through to the finishing and beyond. Sarah Crumpler, UK Marketing Manager for Duplo, said: “The concept of London Calling is always customer focused. It helps us demonstrate engagement across the whole supply for the journey from the seed of a printed job, to the print and finishing, as well as covering what happens next. “Once again our 2015 event was moulded by the suggestions that have emanated from our customer interactions and focus group that steers the new ideas we are incorporating.” Details of Duplo’s key partners for London Calling 2015 will be published through QPP in the magazine and on the web.

LONDON CALLING Now in its seventh year, London Calling has become an established event on the print industry calendar. Duplo will once again bring together a group of key partners from pre- to post-press to share their latest innovations.

London Calling is a showcase for inspirational ideas, innovative applications, more intelligent technology and integrated solutions. The 2015 event will be at Sunbeam Studios, North Kensington, from 3-4 November.

SUNBEAM STUDIOS The building is home to Sunbeam Studios and regarded as one of the foremost photographic studios and event spaces in London. It was originally opened in 1903 as the Talbot Works and was the first purpose-built car factory and show-room in the UK. A world record for 100 miles in one hour was set in 1913 by a Talbot built at this site. Through this achievement the driver, Percy Lambert, became the fastest man ever over this distance – on land, sea, or air, for which he earned the status of celebrity and national hero. Based at Ladbroke Hall, W10, it’s a place that not only produced record breaking cars but was used by Winston Churchill as his experimental warfare establishment in the World War One and is also the place where the first antiaircraft brigade was established in 1915. www.sunbeamstudios.com

Predicting the Unpredictable Martin Christie believes nobody plans to fail, they just fail to plan. Like many aphorisms this simple explanation contains a truth without shedding much useful light on the process.

I

N ORDER TO plan, in the short or long term, you have to be fully aware of all the options and possibilities and have the knowledge to assess the pros and cons in order to guide successfully the way ahead. This has been true in any business venture through time, but more so now when the relentless pace of technical change impacts so quickly upon public demand and purchasing behaviour. Anticipating what lies ahead has always been a difficult business, and judging the implications of any particular development has never been more fraught with potential disaster. Seeing into the future has always been difficult, and the consequences of the speed and direction of technology unpredictable. When the Wright brothers launched their fragile aircraft off the ground at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, it lasted less than a minute and got no higher than twenty feet above the earth. But in little over half a century men were travelling the skies at supersonic speeds and even walking on the surface of the moon. Given the time span of current developments, those decades have now shrunk to years or possibly even months. So the importance of keeping abreast of things cannot be underestimated. And those things may not be immediately relevant to a particular industry, but can become so as the effects of change, in a business or social environment evolve. There’s never been a more important reason to have an overall, and open perspective on the wider world. In previous columns I have mentioned the irony that certain IT gurus were championing the role of print in preserving vital and treasured documents and images, given the historic record of its longevity and readability compared to the unknown shelf life possibilities of digital files. If ever there was a confirmation that the future is uncertain, that is it. However there is the other side of the dilemma that has to be considered in that a refusal to embrace or at least consider change is potentially fatal, and recent history has seen no shortage of examples of rapidly induced redundancy. There is no starker example than the Kodak Corporation, the company that in imaging terms, virtually invented the wheel in the twentieth century. A pioneer of film and photography for the masses, it was a global giant. So when an employee came up with the prototype of a digital camera, long before anyone else, it should have been set firmly for dominating one of the next great technical revolutions. History, we now know, tells it differently.

Of course it’s probably not surprising that for a film company, the idea of a filmless camera went against all logic, but in 1975 the concept was far ahead of its time when the Polaroid was everyone’s idea of an instant camera. Steven Sasson, for it was he credited with the first device, had a much more radical approach to image capture, and given the limited suitable parts available, the prototype was inevitably a bit of a lash up. In fact if the cartoonist Heath Robinson had drawn up the plans, it wouldn’t have looked much different. It used a cassette tape to store the digital information, captured in analogue form by a lens borrowed from a Sony Super 8 movie camera, and then transferred into binary form by a rudimentary collection of electronics. The temperamental CCD array was just 100x100 pixels, providing a pretty low resolution image. That’s photos 10,000 pixels, or 0.01 megapixels — about a hundredth of the resolution that low-end camera phones have today. Even that took about half a minute to process, and was transferred by a video signal to a small TV screen.

The device was supposed to be portable — well, if you had strong arms — and needed sixteen nickel cadmium batteries to operate. The size of a suitcase, and looking about as close to a modern digital camera as the Wright brothers lash up did to a Spitfire, it wasn’t surprising that Kodak executives were sceptical were it was presented to them. It was alien to everything they had been brought up with. As well as getting their heads around the fact it didn’t use film, they couldn’t see why customers would possibly want to view their images on a screen, rather than as nice glossy prints. Even Sasson wasn’t too sure of the potential of his device, he thought it would take 15 to 20 years to develop and longer to be accepted. What he couldn’t anticipate was developments in other areas of electronics, and related resources would release the possibilities. Within ten years the 1 megapixel camera was a possibility, and although Kodak were still in the forefront of development at that time, others had already joined the game. Kodak launched their first proper digital camera in 1995, but they were already falling behind the competition. What could have been a massive opportunity was stifled by lethargy and conservative thinking. Despite holding patents on many of the original digital image technologies, Kodak failed to exploit them sufficiently and allowed more far sighted firms to get way ahead of them. As well as sealing the fate of film, digital sharing meant that people would not only shoot more images, they would interact with them in a completely different way. Part of the problem was that so much of Kodak’s vast resources were tied up in the further development of film and printing — so soon to become an endangered species. When they did

SEPTEMBER 2015 | QUICK PRINT PRO | DIGITAL IMAGING | 23

try and swing all those forces to bear on digital, it was with traditional thinking that people would still want to print all the many pictures they were taking, rather than sharing them electronically on line, or simply on hand held devices. While Kodak stuck to its roots, rivals — including Fujifilm, Nikon, Sony, Canon and others — kept innovating over the years with features like face detection, smile detection, and in-camera red-eye fixes, and Kodak, while it put out competent products, was always following feature trends, never leading them. And in the digital environment, falling behind is fatal because catching up with a trend isn’t enough. While you are catching up, others will have moved on. Getting ahead is vital. Kodak still survives in name, but a mere shadow of its former industrial glory, and its rapid decline is a salutary lesson in how relentless is the pace of progress. It didn’t just take itself down, but during the same period went all the mini-labs and instant print outlets that were a feature of every high street barely a decade ago. Like Kodak, they thought just getting a digital printer, or a stand alone dispenser would serve a demand that was already in free fall. It wasn’t just that customers preferred to do their print purchases cheaper and more conveniently on line, it was most importantly that the need for print for all those cherished social occasions — births, marriages, Christmas and holidays — was to a large degree gone. The significance of this history lesson to the average print shop in the digital age is that we are all generally multi-tasking, and able to produce a variety of products. We have a core interest in the production of print on paper, but in more recent times we have taken on other specialities, like large format inkjet, plan printing, novelty items, and many others including various forms of finishing. Compared to a giant like Kodak, we are also small enough to change direction and adapt. And we have one advantage over internet companies in that we can listen to our customers — even if it’s reluctantly at times. At least we hear what they want, and can explain what we can produce in the time frame they expect and for the budget they are prepared to bring to the counter. The customer base has moved on. Talking to a copy shop owner in Sunderland recently he had exactly the same problems of people new to print, with very little idea of the what, where and how. “You wouldn’t believe it but…” and I answered, “yes, I would, we just had the same one in the shop!” Frustrating, but that is the way of it, we cannot expect customers whose main view of the world is via a tablet to have any understanding of basic

vivid-online.com

physical dimensions, and whose idea of creating print ready artwork is downloading something they spotted on a goggle search. Bleed? What’s that all about? I could fill two pages with anecdotes, but I bet you have heard most of them already. It’s no good complaining, we just have to live and learn to work with them. If not we are in danger of being redundant like the high street mini labs. One simple example of how trends change quickly is the humble flyer. Being in central Brighton we are surrounded by lots of clubs with promoters competing for customers seven days a week, particularly at this time of year when many thousands of students, eager to sponsor their social adventures, are heading for the town for the autumn term. The shop counter used to do a roaring trade in quick turnaround flyers, particularly at a weekend, when the hawkers would be out and about in the crowds and the pavements would soon be littered with discarded invites so recently printed. They have all but gone, and I’m sure Brighton Council, being Green, is delighted its streets are comparatively clear of A6 waste paper. But the promoters haven’t stopped running events, and promoting them. Instead of flyers they now use the social network, as every teenager plus is now on phone 24/7 it’s quicker and more cost effective. By collecting “likes” and “shares” they can target their specific audience with a personal message, instead of a good proportion ending up in the bin. They can also update information as things change at short notice, and may even be able to gauge likely attendance. It’s a no-brainer. Instead of cheap and cheerful disposable flyers, those we now do tend to be short run, quality on heavy card, to back up particular businesses. That’s a premium product you can show a customer at the counter and talk them through pre-print and production, and make it easy for them, rather than battling with an obscure template on an unknown internet site. It’s the revolving door of opportunity, as one side closes another opens. Unfortunately for Kodak, the door worked the other way. Talking of keeping up to date, most digital

print shops will have been updating, or looking to update, both hardware and software on the computer side. The demise of long running Windows XP has given users the dilemma of going for Windows 7, 8 or now 10, and Adobe’s move to subscription rather than standalone had opened the options on the Creative Cloud. There’s plenty of advice on what software to choose, but less clear is exactly what hardware you need in the studio to service it all. If you are upgrading computers to go with the new systems, what exactly do you need in terms of processor, memory etc, to get the most efficient workflow. I’ve been investigating all the various forums, but there are a number of issues that none of them really address, so I’d be grateful for any feedback from QPP readers on the subject. Budgets are always tight when purchasing, so the pressure is on the get the best deal available, but what is the best comprise between price and performance? Most modern software is designed to run best on 64bit operating systems, and Windows 7 will require a lot more RAM than XP — at least 2Gb just to run. But then you have Adobe CC op top of that, and while Adobe say it will run with 2Gb RAA, 8Gb is ‘recommended’. So if you put the two together you actually need 10Gb. Of course RAM isn’t the whole story, and any computer will rapidly eat up all the memory you throw at it. It’s important to find a balance so money isn’t wasted on software that isn’t operating efficiently. Recommendations from the manufacturers tend to be directed towards individual users and reflect a single work pattern, not the multi-tasking the digital studio is expected to perform at any one time. Several programmes and files may be open at one time, as well Google Chrome which is also notoriously memory hungry, and any number of printers may also be having a conversation in the background on the network. All of this traffic slows the system down. I’ll be looking into these issues, and best practice, next month, but in the meantime any feedback would be useful as in this brave new world we are all learning together.

Premier Paper offers Carbon Capture initiative THE Premier Paper Group has announced that it is now offering its customers the chance to become a Carbon Capture Certified Company, with Purely Digital being the first to take advantage of the new environmental initiative. The scheme allows customers who are looking to reduce their environmental impact and minimise their CO2 emissions through their operational activities, to become a certified Carbon Capture Company through Premier Paper. Originally, Premier offered Carbon Capture to customers to capture the CO2 emissions from the production and distribution involved in their paper purchases, which is then calculated and captured by planting trees with the Woodland Trust’s Woodland Carbon Scheme. This has now been extended to organisations and companies who wish to Carbon Capture all their CO2 emissions related to their operational activities. The first company to take advantage of this environmental initiative offering is Derby based digital printing company, Purely Digital, whose operations serve the Derby, Nottingham and Leicester regions. Specialising in short run digital printing, Purely Digital became Premier’s first Carbon Capture Certified Company having already been part of its Carbon Capture paper purchase offset programme since 2013, where it has been responsible for creating 92.09m² of new native woodland in the UK through the Woodland Trust’s Woodland Carbon scheme. Commenting on their reasons for opting to become the first Certified Carbon Capture Company, Purely Digital’s Managing Director, Andrew Edmondson, stated, “When we started the business we wanted to try and be as green as we could. We became FSC certified and looked to combat the rise of CO2 emissions that we, as a company produced through our plant. We offset our company’s electricity supply for the past seven years by various schemes with the electricity companies, but I found that often these were offsetting the carbon overseas, which was not favourable to me. By contributing to the Woodland Carbon Scheme with the Woodland Trust, and through their partnership with Premier Paper, this made me think this would be a far, far, better way to capture back the CO2 we as a company produce, by not allowing it to be someone else’s problem overseas, but to capture the carbon in a scheme operating here in the UK that we can see tangible benefits from, and help develop further the UK forest coverage.” Andrew added, “I believe we have a low percentage of land covered by trees compared to our European neighbours and we should do whatever we can to rectify that. Also by doing this we are contributing in a small way to the welfare of our children and their children by means of slowing down global warming and creating leisure areas for families to enjoy and benefit from for many years to come.” “I wish Premier and the Woodland Trust all the best with this new scheme. I hope it generates great interest within print, and also further afield. If I can show what we can do by taking on these initiatives as a small company, then hopefully this might encourage others, and much larger companies, to follow suit.” Premier Paper’s Environmental Sales Director, Chris Stanyon, stated, “Purely Digital are the first company to adopt this new standard in our Carbon Capture programme and I am pleased that the programme fits well with their company objectives. Purely Digital has been running carbon reduction initiatives for a number of years and recognise the commercial benefits of demonstrating a responsible approach to their operations. Achieving the new Certified Carbon Capture Company standard will enable them to use this in all their marketing and communication projects, clearly demonstrating their support for a UK based environmental project that results in creating native British woodland that is accessible for all to enjoy” Carbon Capture is offered through the Woodland Trust, who Premier, as a corporate partner, signed up to its UK Woodland Carbon Code. This programme sets a new standard for Carbon Capture, removing it from the atmosphere through the creation of native woodland across the country.

The scheme operates under the Government’s Woodland Carbon programme, an accredited award winning carbon removal scheme, which operates under the Government’s 2011 Woodland Carbon Code. To become a Certified Carbon Capture Company, customers, together with the use of Carbon Capture paper, will calculate their operational CO2 emissions from its energy and fuel consumptions using DEFRA figures and guidelines. The calculated figures will then be submitted for an independent audit and verification. Upon verification, the company can then Carbon Capture their operational CO2 together with their paper purchases to become a Certified Carbon Capture Company. The benefits of becoming a Certified Carbon Capture Company include; Carbon Management plan and internal carbon reduction programme; Quantifiable CO2 reduction claims that can be included in annual reports; Marketing programmes to help add customer value; High integrity environmental programme independently verified; Use of the unique ‘Green Seal’ logo. The certified Carbon Capture Company status is for a two year period, after which the operational CO2 emissions will then be audited and re-verified. The Carbon Capture scheme operates under the Government’s Woodland Carbon Code, a voluntary standard for woodland creation projects in the UK. The independent certification to this standard provides assurance and clarity about the carbon benefits of these sustainably managed woodlands. It is calculated that 25m² of native UK woodland will capture and store one tonne of CO2 and creating large areas of new native woodland, will, over time, remove hundreds of thousands of tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Premier Paper has 30,000 tonnes of paper held throughout its branch network, offering some 5,500 different product items, from many of the world’s leading paper manufacturers, including the UK market’s widest selection of media for digital printing. Equipped with specialist knowledge and extensive experience, the Premier business divisions offer a high level of guidance and advice, specifically tailored to each market sector. The Premier Paper Group endeavours to be an integral and valuable part of its customers’ business providing first class services, sharing its extensive knowledge and information, offering advice and a choice of quality products. Dye-sublimation printing on a range of substrates

Epson is unveiling two new dye-sublimation printers to help users reliably and cost-effectively produce superior-quality textiles and promotional goods.

P

ART OF A complete Epson package, the SC-F7200 and SC-F6200 printers are backed up with warranty and service support, allowing printing companies to benefit from Epson’s high-quality output with peace of mind. These new models enhance Epson’s dye-sublimation line-up by offering customers the chance to expand their production capabilities. Both the SC-F7200 and SC-F6200 are capable of producing high-quality printed textiles, such as clothing, sportswear and home textiles, and also offer the flexibility needed to sublimate onto a range of hard substrates, the SC-F6200 is ideally suited to this application. Ideal for companies producing promotional goods, the printer can be used to sublimate onto tailored goods, including mugs and phone and tablet covers. Martin Johns, product manager, Epson UK said: “With these two models, we have utilised the latest Epson engineering advancements to deliver two new dye-sublimation printers to our customers. With its new and enhanced capabilities, the SC-F6200 opens up a plethora of new possibilities in the photographic market for printing photos on to substrates such as metal and wood. Alongside this, the SC-F7200 has been exclusively created and developed to help the roll-to-roll textile market create outstanding results.” Both printers utilise Epson’s PrecisionCore TFP printhead to produce outstanding, accurate prints with superb colours and clarity. These work in tandem with the UltraChrome DS ink-set to help users achieve the best-possible results. A new HDK Black ink has been created primarily for textile printing, to help produce deep, neutral blacks and dense shadows. Users printing on rigid substrates will benefit from the standard black ink, as it produces

smooth gradations, perfect for the creation of promotional goods. Dye-sublimation customers purchasing these products will benefit from a complete Epson printing package. The hardware, software, printhead, ink and sublimation papers have been made and supported by one manufacturer to ensure everything works together seamlessly. The printers also come bundled with Wasatch software,

meaning users are ready to start printing straight away, without the need for further investment. On top of this, providing first-class service and support is important in giving Epson’s customers added piece of mind. In the unlikely event of a problem, both products come with a one-year warranty as standard. If customers wish to extend their cover, Epson CoverPlus warranty options are also available, including

Epson’s rolling one-year warranty that allows customers to pay for a year at a time, rather than paying for a long term upfront. Furthermore, both models include a number of ways to help customers keep their costs low. High-capacity ink systems mean a low printing cost per square metre, while the use of Epson’s genuine inks ensures less cleaning and fewer printhead replacements are needed to help reduce possible downtime. Disposing of waste ink is now easier and more cost-effective as both printers now include a two-litre bottle to collect wastage. Both products are also available with Epson’s managed print service programme which allows tighter budget control and helps reduce overstocking. www.epson.co.uk

SLICE! Joe, a notoriously bad golfer, hits his ball off the first tee and watches as it slices to the right and disappears through an open window. Figuring that’s the end of it, he gets another ball out of his bag and plays on. On the eighth hole, a police officer walks up to Joe on the course and says, “Did you hit a golf ball through a window back there?” Joe says, “Yes I did.” “Well,” says the police officer, “it knocked a lamp over, scaring the dog, which raced out of the house into the road. A driver rammed into a brick wall to avoid the dog, sending three people to hospital. And it’s all because you sliced the ball.” “Oh my goodness,” says Joe, “is there anything I can do?” “Yes there is,” the cop says. “Try keeping your head down and close up your stance a bit.”

ART ATTACK A man steals paintings from a museum and gets a few blocks away, runs out of gas and the cops catch him. When asked what happened he replied...”I didn’t have enough Monet to pay for Degas to make the Van Gogh!!!!

SAUCY LITTLE NUMBER There were three tomatoes: a mum, a dad and a son. The son lagged behind and fell splat on the floor. His dad yelled to him, “Ketchup, son.

ONE OVER THE EIGHT A man got really drunk one night in his local pub. The barman refused to serve him any more alcohol and told him he should be heading home. The man thought this was a good idea so he stood up to leave but fell over straight away. He tried to stand up again but only fell over again. He thought if only he could get outside and get some fresh air he’d be grand. So he crawled outside then tried to stand up and fell over again. In the end after falling over lots more he decided to crawl home. When he got back to his house he pulled himself up using the door handle but as soon as he let go he fell over again. He had to crawl up the stairs and managed to fall over onto the bed and fell asleep. When he finally woke up the next morning his wife asked him what he was doing at the pub last night. He denied it but she said, “I know

you were there...” You maintained your innocence until... the barman rang to say you forgot your wheelchair again....”

IT’S A MIRACLE! A bent-over old lady hobbled into a doctor’s office. Within minutes, she came out again but miraculously, she was standing up as straight as could be. A man in the waiting room who had been watching her said in amazement; “My goodness, what did the doctor do to you?” The old lady replied, “He gave me a longer cane!”

DIFFICULT DECISION If your dog is barking at the back door and your wife is yelling at the front door, who do you let in first? The Dog of course... at least he’ll shut up after you let him in!

LINGUIST Mother mouse and a baby mouse were walking along, when all of a sudden, a cat attacked them. The mother mouse goes, “BARK!” and the cat runs away. “See?” says the mother mouse to her baby. “Now do you see why it’s important to learn a foreign language”.

JOB LINGO “JOIN OUR FAST-PACED COMPANY”: We have no time to train you. “CASUAL WORK ATMOSPHERE”: We don’t pay enough to expect that you’ll dress up; well, a couple of the real daring guys wear earrings. “MUST BE DEADLINE ORIENTED”: You’ll be six months behind schedule on your first day. “SOME OVERTIME REQUIRED”: Some time each night and some time each weekend. “DUTIES WILL VARY”: Anyone in the office can boss you around. “MUST HAVE AN EYE FOR DETAIL”: We have no quality control.

PRINT CONTROL Mr. Trent always scheduled the weekly staff meeting for four thirty on Friday afternoons. When one of the employees finally got up the nerve to ask why, he explained. “I will tell you why… I’ve leaned that’s the only time of the week when none of you seem to want to argue with me.”

COVER ALL EXITS! During a bank heist the Chief told the Sergeant to cover all exits so the robbers could not get away. Later the Sergeant reports to the chief. “Sorry sir but they got away.”

The chief very disappointed says, “I told you to cover all exits!” “I did” replied the Sergeant “but they got away through the entrance.”

YANKIE YARN A farmer walked into an attorney’s office wanting to file for a divorce. The attorney asked, ‘May I help you?’ The farmer said, ‘Yea, I want to get one of those dayvorces.’ The attorney said, ‘Well, do you have any grounds?’ The farmer said, ‘Yea, I got about 140 acres.’ The attorney said, ‘No, you don’t understand, do you have a case?’ The farmer said, ‘No, I don’t have a case, but I have a John Deere.’ The attorney said, ‘No, you don’t understand. I mean do you have a grudge?’ The farmer said, ‘Yea, I got a grudge. That’s where I park my John Deere.’ The attorney said, ‘No sir, I mean do you have a suit?’ The farmer said, ‘Yes sir, I got a suit. I wear it to church on Sundays.’ The exasperated attorney said, ‘Well, sir, does your wife beat you up or anything?’ The farmer said, ‘No sir, we both get up about 4:30.’ Finally, the attorney says, ‘Okay, let me put it this way. WHY DO YOU WANT A DIVORCE?’ And the farmer says, ‘Well, I can never have a meaningful conversation with her.’

LIFE ON THE ROAD A young salesman was trying to park his car between two others. He put it in reverse, and bang right into the car behind him. He then went forward and bang right into the car in front. A young woman watching the manoeuvre couldn’t contain herself, “Do you always park by ear?” she asked.

EMBARRASSING SITUATIONS A very shy sales guy goes into a bar and sees a beautiful woman sitting at the other end. After an hour of gathering up his courage he finally goes over to her and asks, tentatively, “Um, would you mind if I chatted with you for a while?” To which she responds by yelling, at the top of her lungs, “No, I won’t sleep with you tonight!” By now, the entire bar is staring at them. Naturally, the sales guy is hopelessly and completely embarrassed and he slinks back to his table. After a few minutes, the woman walks over to him and apologises.

She smiles at him and says, “I’m sorry if I embarrassed you. You see, I’m a graduate student in psychology and I’m studying how people respond to embarrassing situations.” To which he responds, at the top of his lungs, “What do you mean £200!”

DECORATING DUNCE A husband comes home and sees his wife painting the living room, but she had her raincoat and her fur coat on. He asks her why she has her coats on. She replies, “I read the can, and it said for best results put on two coats.

TRAINEE SALESMAN A salesman comes home from a night of drinking with the boys. As he falls through the doorway of his house, his wife snaps at him, “what’s the big idea coming home half drunk?” The salesman replies, “I’m sorry, honey. I ran out of money.”

HERD THIS ONE BEFORE? Herds of elephants from all over Africa were summoned to a meeting in the jungle, as their national leader took his place on the stage, one of the African elephants trumpeted impatiently: “Come on, tell us what this is all about. We’re all ears.”

TIMESCALES An inebriated salesman and his drunken friend were sitting at a bar. “Do you know what time it is?” Asked the drunk. “Sure,” said the man “Thanks,” said the drunk.

GUARDIAN ANGEL A woman is walking on the road and a voice shouts out, “Don’t take a step further.” She obeys and suddenly a ton of bricks fall on the place where she would have otherwise been. She thinks she imagined it and keeps walking until suddenly the voice calls out again. “Don’t take a step further.” She stops and a car skids past. Then suddenly she hears the voice saying “I am your guardian angel, and I will warn you before something bad happens to you. Now do you have any questions to ask me?” Yes! Shouts the woman, “Just where were you on my wedding day!”

REMEMBER THIS ONE? “Doc!” the man yells. I’ve lost my memory!” “Calm down, sir. When did this happen.” The man looked at him. “When did what happen?”

TRAFFIC STOP A salesman gets this real fast sports car and he is flying down the road at about 80 mph. After a couple miles a cop pulls out on to the road and turns on his siren. The salesman pulls over and waits for the officer to give him a ticket. The officer comes up to his car and says “I have been waiting for you all day”. The salesman says “Well I got here as fast I could”.

CHROMOSOMES PHOTOCOPIERS: These are female, because once turned off; it takes a while to warm them up again. They are an effective reproductive device if the right buttons are pushed, but can also wreak havoc if you push the wrong buttons. TYRES: Tyres are male, because they go bald easily and are often over inflated HOT AIR BALLOONS: Also a male object, because to get them to go anywhere, you have to light a fire under their butt. SPONGES: These are female, because they are soft, squeezable and retain water. WEB PAGES: Female, because they’re constantly being looked at and frequently getting hit on. TRAINS: Definitely male, because they always use the same old lines for picking up people. EGG TIMERS: Egg timers are female because, over time, all the weight shifts to the bottom. HAMMERS: Male, because in the last 5000 years, they’ve hardly changed at all, and are occasionally handy to have around.

Two fleas were walking out of the cinema…

THE REMOTE CONTROL: Female. Ha! You probably thought it would be male, but consider this: It easily gives a man pleasure, he’d be lost without it, and while he doesn’t always know which buttons to push, he just keeps trying.

JOKES IN PRINT An RGB walks into a CMYK bar. Bartender says, “Hey, aren’t you out of gamut?” Printers know how to ‘do it’ between the sheets. Why did the printer forget to say goodbye to his wife? He was pressed for time. What type of hunting do printers prefer? Trapping. What did the typographer say to the printer who wouldn’t stop talking? “Get to the point.” Four fonts walk into a bar The barman says ‘Oi - get out! We don’t want your type in here’

Two fat blokes in a pub, one says to the other ‘your round.’ The other one says ‘so are you, you fat bastard.’ A man walks into a bar with a roll of tarmac under his arm and says: ‘Pint please, and one for the road.’ So I said ‘Do you want a game of darts?’, he said ‘OK then’, I said ‘Nearest to bull starts’. He said ‘Baa’, I

AUTUMN ART GALLERY A couple go to an art gallery. They find a picture of a naked women with only her privates covered with leaves. The wife doesn’t like it and moves on but the husband keeps looking. The wife asks: “What are you waiting for?” The husband replies: “Autumn.”

ONE LINERS FOR THE FALL This autumn we can look forward to falling leaves and rising gas prices. We’ll be raking it up while the oil companies are raking it in. If money did grow on trees, autumn would be the best season ever! Blue eyed girls like autumn because

“Shall we walk?” said one flea.

it bring their eyes out. It’s so strange that autumn is so beautiful, but everything is really dying Autumn is a time when death is golden and beautiful. Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower

WASH YOUR MIND OUT An 85-year-old man was requested by his doctor for a sperm count as part of his physical exam. The doctor gave the man a jar and said, “Take this jar home and bring back a semen sample tomorrow.” The next day the 85-year-old man reappeared at the doctor’s office and gave him the jar, which was as clean and empty as on the previous day. The doctor asked, what happened and the man explained. “Well, doc, it’s like this — first I tried with my right hand, but nothing. Then I tried with my left hand, but still nothing. Then I asked my wife for help. She tried with her right hand, then with her left, still nothing. She tried with her mouth, first with the teeth in, then with her teeth out, still nothing. We even called up Arleen, the lady next door and she tried too, first with both hands, then an armpit, and she even tried squeezin’ it between her knees, but still nothing.” The doctor was shocked! “You asked your neighbour?” The old man replied, “Yep, none of us could get the jar open.”

SPOOKY JOKE REQUEST FOR NEXT EDITION Halloween jokes please. Bit like these. Becky came up to a boy with a sheet over his head on Halloween and asked, “Are you a ghost?” The boy replied, “No, of course not! I’m an unmade bed!” Patient: Doctor, I think that I’ve been bitten by a vampire. Doctor: Drink this glass of water. Patient: Will it make me better? Doctor: No, but I’ll be able to see if your neck leaks.

“No,” said the other, “there will be a dog along in a minute.”
